- 0:00Speaker 1: So let's bring in our panel of China experts, Michael Allen,
- 0:03Speaker 1: former Bush national Security official, and Heritage Foundation senior advisor
- 0:07Speaker 1: Michael Pillsburg. Great to have both of you here to
- 0:10Speaker 1: break this down and to look forward a little bit.
- 0:11Speaker 1: Here's how the apiece spells this out. They say at
- 0:14Speaker 1: stake is nothing less than the future of the global economy.
- 0:18Speaker 1: A misstep could send shock waves through American industries that
- 0:21Speaker 1: have already been rattled by Trump's aggressive tariffs, government layoffs,
- 0:25Speaker 1: and political brinksmanship. So how tricky is this moving forward?
- 0:31Speaker 2: It's very tricky. The media is covering this from hour
- 0:35Speaker 2: to hour. You'll notice the caution and the care in
- 0:38Speaker 2: what Scott Dissent and Jamison Greer are saying. Every word
- 0:42Speaker 2: is carefully chosen. They're not saying we have a deal.
- 0:45Speaker 2: They're not saying, you know, if you have a scorecard.
- 0:48Speaker 2: They're not saying they just purchased fifty billion dollars of soybeans,
- 0:52Speaker 2: or they're not saying China just agreed to stop its
- 0:54Speaker 2: navy patrols around Taiwan every every day. None of that's happening.
- 1:00Speaker 2: A lot of pressures being put on China, and I
- 1:02Speaker 2: think behind this, I would just use the word brilliant.
- 1:06Speaker 2: Trump has a brilliant long term strategy. He knows there's
- 1:09Speaker 2: only one person in the world who can make things
- 1:12Speaker 2: happen in China. That's She's in pain. So what has
- 1:14Speaker 2: he done after this summit? He and Milania are going
- 1:18Speaker 2: to China in three months. Then she and Madame Panga
- 1:22Speaker 2: we need to come here. So he's laying the framework
- 1:25Speaker 2: for a long term new arrangement where we don't get
- 1:28Speaker 2: ripped off and where our economic growth rate is benefited
- 1:32Speaker 2: by China. But we still have a long way to go.
- 1:35Speaker 2: And that's why every word President Trump is saying, also,
- 1:39Speaker 2: I think is very carefully calibrated for how do we
- 1:41Speaker 2: get China to make the kind of concessions we need
- 1:44Speaker 2: to grow our own economy and that they not invade
- 1:48Speaker 2: Taiwan and that they agree to one of President Trump's
- 1:51Speaker 2: favorite issues, he wants nuclear stability talks with Russia, China,
- 1:55Speaker 2: and America together to kind of put a cap on
- 1:57Speaker 2: overall nuclear weapons totals. There's a lot to get done,
- 2:01Speaker 2: but he's well on the way to doing it by
- 2:03Speaker 2: having this what I call this long term framework.
- 2:06Speaker 1: And you mentioned Russia and all of those interchanges. There,
- 2:09Speaker 1: there's reporting the President is going to press China to
- 2:12Speaker 1: be more helpful when it comes to Russia. How does
- 2:14Speaker 1: that conversation go and how do we measure any kind
- 2:17Speaker 1: of concrete success from this particular meeting.
- 2:19Speaker 3: Well, I think just in terms of success for this meeting,
- 2:22Speaker 3: if it turns out to be a fragile truce and
- 2:24Speaker 3: the framework goes forward and the markets are calmed, I
- 2:28Speaker 3: think that would be great. We were two loaded guns
- 2:31Speaker 3: aimed at each other, and if we've begun to back
- 2:33Speaker 3: away from that, that is terrific news. If he raises
- 2:37Speaker 3: Russia with Jijinping, I don't expect him to have a
- 2:39Speaker 3: lot of success. Jijinping, at the end of the day,
- 2:42Speaker 3: wants to see Russia succeed. China, however, is keeping Vladimir
- 2:47Speaker 3: Putin's wartime economy afloat. So if the President is serious
- 2:51Speaker 3: about continuing like he's been doing, putting pressure on the
- 2:55Speaker 3: Russians to condition them to make concessions like a ceasefire,
- 3:00Speaker 3: he might consider consider continuing the tariffs that he wants
- 3:05Speaker 3: to do. And so I think these are just important tools.
- 3:08Speaker 3: We're talking about economic warfare tools across the board. And
- 3:12Speaker 3: I think this is just typical of this new era
- 3:14Speaker 3: of geopolitical competition that we're in.
- 3:17Speaker 1: You know, a couple of weeks ago, we had the
- 3:19Speaker 1: daughter of one of the pastors. She's a US citizen,
- 3:21Speaker 1: her father is one of these pastors that was rounded
- 3:23Speaker 1: up all across China. And I wonder if the timing
- 3:28Speaker 1: is coordinated to the meetings we're having now. Are they
- 3:30Speaker 1: bargaining chips? There are questions about whether President Trump will
- 3:33Speaker 1: raise those issues human rights abuses as well with China.
- 3:37Speaker 2: I was just in Rome at the Vatican last week.
- 3:40Speaker 2: We happy to know they're quite alarmed at this new
- 3:43Speaker 2: treatment of Christians in China. This used to be a
- 3:46Speaker 2: kind of solved problem. Now these look like systematic arrests
- 3:52Speaker 2: to deliberately take hostages and perhaps even to undo the
- 3:56Speaker 2: Vatican China deal of about eight years ago. So this
- 4:00Speaker 2: is a very alarming. But again it's the kind of
- 4:02Speaker 2: thing that Trump and chi Jin ping together. If chi
- 4:06Speaker 2: Jin thing thinks he's going to head off one hundred
- 4:08Speaker 2: percent tariffs by releasing some Catholic leaders, he'll do it.
- 4:12Speaker 2: But there's no other way. I don't I'm not a
- 4:14Speaker 2: big believer in dialogue. You know, with human rights people
- 4:17Speaker 2: asking other human rights people what to do. The Chinese
- 4:20Speaker 2: are a dictatorship. They're not going to do anything for free.
- 4:23Speaker 2: So this she jin ping Trump relationship, just as Michael
- 4:27Speaker 2: is saying, is it globally important?
- 4:30Speaker 1: And end of the day, what do you think is
- 4:32Speaker 1: the top takeaway from this? They've talked fentanyl, they've talked soybeans,
- 4:35Speaker 1: they've talked rare earths, which is the most crucial.
- 4:38Speaker 3: For this meaning well, I think it's terrific if we
- 4:40Speaker 3: did get some soybean purchases atic here, and I expect
- 4:43Speaker 3: the Chinese will say that they've agreed to something as
- 4:46Speaker 3: it comes to fentanyl. So I think it's going to
- 4:47Speaker 3: be as a scene as a success. But we're not
- 4:50Speaker 3: out of the woods on this. We are quite dependent
- 4:54Speaker 3: on China for rare earth minerals. We have to get
- 4:57Speaker 3: out from underneath this ton of bricks. I know the
- 5:00Speaker 3: Trump White House knows this. They're working with speed, but
- 5:03Speaker 3: we need an Operation warps Warp styled crash effort to
- 5:10Speaker 3: develop our own rare earths. I know they want to
- 5:12Speaker 3: do that, but we've got to do that sooner rather
- 5:14Speaker 3: than later, because we don't want to be leveraged by
- 5:17Speaker 3: China like we have been over the last two weeks.
- 5:20Speaker 1: Well much to see and watch and wait for this
- 5:22Speaker 1: meeting coming together. We believe it's going to happen, and
- 5:25Speaker 1: when we have a readout, we'll head back to our
- 5:27Speaker 1: experts to see how it went. Gentlemen, Thank you Bill,
- 5:30Speaker 1: good to have you in this morning.
