- 0:00Speaker 1: Let's hear a little more from Long Worn's head coach
- 0:02Speaker 1: Steve Sarkisian. This from the news conference from earlier today,
- 0:08Speaker 1: which you heard here on the zone, and he was
- 0:12Speaker 1: asked about the defense, and somebody asked, is is your
- 0:15Speaker 1: defense playing more consistent football than your offensive unit?
- 0:19Speaker 2: I don't. I don't believe.
- 0:20Speaker 1: So.
- 0:20Speaker 2: I feel like, hey, human nature is human nature.
- 0:23Speaker 3: And you know, I'm not gonna sit here and say
- 0:27Speaker 3: that our guys didn't read or see or hear people
- 0:29Speaker 3: talk about them.
- 0:30Speaker 2: We all have TVs, we all have phones.
- 0:32Speaker 3: Right, we might not all subscribe to newspapers, but you
- 0:35Speaker 3: know we do read here and see.
- 0:45Speaker 2: Hey.
- 0:45Speaker 3: I don't know, but but my point, my point to
- 0:50Speaker 3: that is I think it's human nature.
- 0:52Speaker 2: Yes we can read here and see those things.
- 0:54Speaker 3: But I don't think our players ever got into a
- 0:56Speaker 3: space or a staff to where we thought we were
- 0:58Speaker 3: better than we were. We knew we had a heck
- 1:00Speaker 3: of a challenge coming our way Saturday night.
- 1:04Speaker 2: I just wish we would have played better.
- 1:06Speaker 3: And I don't think it was a byproduct of us,
- 1:08Speaker 3: you know, thinking we were better than we were. And
- 1:10Speaker 3: I don't think it was that we didn't play hard.
- 1:12Speaker 3: I thought We tried hard, we wanted to do right,
- 1:15Speaker 3: we wanted to play well. We just didn't play great.
- 1:17Speaker 3: And and there's some games you can get away with
- 1:20Speaker 3: not playing great. It's tough when you don't play great
- 1:24Speaker 3: and the other team plays pretty well, especially in a
- 1:27Speaker 3: half of football that it's tough to come back in
- 1:29Speaker 3: those types of games.
- 1:30Speaker 2: And we gave it our best shot. It just wasn't
- 1:32Speaker 2: good enough.
- 1:34Speaker 3: But I do think, you know, moving forward, our defense
- 1:38Speaker 3: has played really good football, and they've played football in
- 1:42Speaker 3: a way where it's, like I said, it's not about
- 1:44Speaker 3: one guy. I think we're playing good against the run,
- 1:46Speaker 3: we're playing good against the pass. We've played good third
- 1:49Speaker 3: down defense. You know, we we've been starting to create
- 1:52Speaker 3: some turnovers here now again. You know, we're always trying
- 1:56Speaker 3: to find ways to improve. And you know, we've been
- 1:59Speaker 3: great all year at putting out the fires, you know,
- 2:02Speaker 3: when they've gotten short fields and when turnovers have occurred.
- 2:05Speaker 3: The other night wasn't our best night at that, and
- 2:08Speaker 3: Georgia found a way to get in the end zone
- 2:10Speaker 3: three of those five trips into the red area. So
- 2:12Speaker 3: we're always trying to find a way to improve. This
- 2:14Speaker 3: week is going to pose new challenges right with Vanderbilt.
- 2:17Speaker 3: They're a different style of offenses. So we've got to
- 2:19Speaker 3: be really disciplined in our preparation, in our in our
- 2:22Speaker 3: approach to get that done. But I've been very proud
- 2:25Speaker 3: of those guys. They've they've played football at a high
- 2:27Speaker 3: level for us, and we're gonna need them to to
- 2:29Speaker 3: continue to do that because championship teams.
- 2:32Speaker 2: Aren't one dimensional.
- 2:33Speaker 3: So we got to get offense back to executing the
- 2:36Speaker 3: way we know how to play. But in the meantime,
- 2:37Speaker 3: the defense has got to hold down the fort to
- 2:40Speaker 3: make sure that we can we can play complimentary football
- 2:42Speaker 3: starting this Saturday.
- 2:44Speaker 2: Okay, so you heard the laughing.
- 2:45Speaker 1: The reason why there was laughing and chuckling was it
- 2:48Speaker 1: was Kirk Bowles from the now Houston Chronicle member formerly
- 2:51Speaker 1: for so many years with the Austin Americans Tasman. But
- 2:55Speaker 1: it was Kirk Bowles who asked Sark about did your
- 2:59Speaker 1: players read the press clippings or did they start thinking
- 3:02Speaker 1: it was going to be easy or whatever? So I
- 3:04Speaker 1: don't think so, you know, and he heard him say,
- 3:07Speaker 1: I think they you know, they know, they all hear
- 3:10Speaker 1: things and seeing is I don't know how many newspapers.
- 3:12Speaker 1: They and they got everybody laughing on that, all right.
- 3:17Speaker 1: He was also asked about his rotation with his defense
- 3:22Speaker 1: due to injuries, most notably in the secondary because of
- 3:25Speaker 1: Andrew mccooba's injury and he's listed as questionable, Jelani McDonald
- 3:30Speaker 1: coming off injury, and might Jelani be rotating there and
- 3:33Speaker 1: Jodday baron rolling and so Sark was explaining some of that.
- 3:37Speaker 3: Michael and Jelani are more than likely we are starters Saturday.
- 3:41Speaker 3: I think Jordan Johnson Rebel is a guy who has
- 3:44Speaker 3: gotten snaps for us and the guy who has earned
- 3:46Speaker 3: I think the opportunity to get more playing time. Naturally,
- 3:50Speaker 3: we have the versatility of Jodday that he's you know,
- 3:53Speaker 3: we've trained him at safety. He's playing some safety for
- 3:55Speaker 3: us this year, so again he's a bit of a
- 3:58Speaker 3: Swiss army knife army knife for us. You know, he's
- 4:01Speaker 3: played corner, he's played star, he's played diamebacker in our
- 4:04Speaker 3: dime package, he's played safety. And that's from just the
- 4:07Speaker 3: wealth experience that he has. So I think we'll be
- 4:10Speaker 3: fine from a rotational standpoint, but we definitely the sooner
- 4:13Speaker 3: we can get, you know, Andrew back will be helpful
- 4:16Speaker 3: for us.
- 4:16Speaker 2: All right.
- 4:16Speaker 1: Now, a question about Diego Pavia, the Vanderbilt quarterback and
- 4:21Speaker 1: the not only the production but the spirit that he
- 4:26Speaker 1: provides the Commodore offense.
- 4:29Speaker 3: Well, I think, you know, he's kind of that definition
- 4:31Speaker 3: of grit. You know, grit is always something very hard
- 4:33Speaker 3: to define. Sometimes it's easier to see. And he's a
- 4:37Speaker 3: gritty player.
- 4:38Speaker 2: He's tough.
- 4:40Speaker 3: He finds a way to make plays, whether it's with
- 4:43Speaker 3: his legs, with his arm, with his legs and his arm.
- 4:48Speaker 3: You know, he runs tough, he runs hard, he makes
- 4:50Speaker 3: the throws when he needs to make him. And I
- 4:53Speaker 3: think that that he's infused that grit into their program,
- 4:57Speaker 3: you know.
- 4:57Speaker 2: And that's to take another way from Coach Lee.
- 4:58Speaker 3: I'm sure Clark Lee knew and identified that and saw
- 5:01Speaker 3: that in him, but they but they have it, and
- 5:04Speaker 3: I think it's a it's a real credit to him
- 5:07Speaker 3: because I really think that he's, like I said, he's
- 5:09Speaker 3: the kind of he's the straw that stirs the drink
- 5:12Speaker 3: for them.
- 5:12Speaker 2: All right.
- 5:13Speaker 1: Uh. He was also asked if there's a blueprint now
- 5:16Speaker 1: for defending Texas based on what Georgia did to gain
- 5:21Speaker 1: plan against the long warns.
- 5:22Speaker 2: You know they have.
- 5:23Speaker 3: They have a couple of really experienced players on that defense.
- 5:26Speaker 3: You know, those two safeties have played a lot of
- 5:28Speaker 3: football for them. They're really good players. And so when
- 5:30Speaker 3: you talked about disguising, the more veteran, the more heady
- 5:35Speaker 3: player you are, you're a little bit more comfortable disguising
- 5:38Speaker 3: those things. They've got a wealth of experience at the
- 5:42Speaker 3: line of scrimmage with guys that have played a ton
- 5:44Speaker 3: of football to go along with that defense is really talented.
- 5:48Speaker 3: You know, there's there's a there's some NFL guys and
- 5:50Speaker 3: some first round picks on that defense too, and so
- 5:53Speaker 3: I think you tie it all together with really good
- 5:55Speaker 3: defensive coaches. Sometimes that's hard to replicate all of what
- 5:59Speaker 3: they did.
- 5:59Speaker 1: Now.
- 6:00Speaker 3: I'm sure they can look at people can look at
- 6:01Speaker 3: some of the things that they did, but it's hard
- 6:04Speaker 3: to replicate some of it when maybe you just don't
- 6:07Speaker 3: have the bullets in the gun right that that that
- 6:09Speaker 3: Georgia has, and and that's again from the the experience
- 6:14Speaker 3: they have and also the talent level that they have.
- 6:17Speaker 1: Okay, uh Sark also asked uh asked in the presser
- 6:24Speaker 1: about Jayden Blue, Jadan Blue caught some passes out of
- 6:27Speaker 1: the backfield, did not carry the ball from scrimmage and
- 6:29Speaker 1: asked about you know what the situation was with Jaden
- 6:34Speaker 1: Blue's particular role with the offense.
- 6:36Speaker 3: Well, he's got to be a versatile player for us,
- 6:38Speaker 3: you know, And that's what he is. And we've known
- 6:40Speaker 3: this about Jaden. He's a heck of a receiver. Obviously
- 6:42Speaker 3: made a lot of plays for us, big touchdown catch
- 6:44Speaker 3: there in the third quarter.
- 6:46Speaker 2: But he's a very good runner too.
- 6:49Speaker 3: I know that when he's really good in space, and
- 6:52Speaker 3: he's a really good route runner and catching the ball.
- 6:55Speaker 3: But we've got to we've got to make sure that
- 6:57Speaker 3: when he's in the game, people aren't just thinking pass
- 6:59Speaker 3: past pass, and so we've got to find ways to
- 7:01Speaker 3: get him his carries. Again, I thought Trey ran hard
- 7:04Speaker 3: and physical the other night as well. But we're gonna
- 7:07Speaker 3: need both those guys, you know, and neither of them
- 7:09Speaker 3: are one dimensional guys. We got to use them from
- 7:11Speaker 3: a versatility standpoint.
- 7:12Speaker 1: Next, he was asked if he thought is Quinn still hurting,
- 7:15Speaker 1: is he still injured and did that limit him on Saturday?
- 7:18Speaker 3: No, I don't. I don't think it's impacted them at all.
- 7:20Speaker 3: I really think he's healthy and feels good about it. So,
- 7:24Speaker 3: you know, is he one hundred percent? I don't know
- 7:27Speaker 3: is anybody on our team one hundred percent you know
- 7:30Speaker 3: going into week eight?
- 7:31Speaker 2: Probably not. You know, everybody's got something right now, all right.
- 7:34Speaker 1: And then he was asked about this matchup meeting of
- 7:36Speaker 1: the minds with Vanderbilt head coach Clark Lee, formerly of
- 7:39Speaker 1: course another Dame assistant.
- 7:41Speaker 3: You know, A ton of respect for Clark. You know,
- 7:43Speaker 3: he's a great defensive coach. He's a very good head coach.
- 7:46Speaker 3: I mean, he really is extremely knowledgeable about the game
- 7:52Speaker 3: and understanding the game, and I think at times, I
- 7:55Speaker 3: would say, think somewhat like an offensive coach, you know,
- 7:58Speaker 3: in the discipline and the execution in which they operate,
- 8:04Speaker 3: the foreshadowing of things that might come his way, and
- 8:07Speaker 3: then how he's going to defend those things. You know, Again,
- 8:11Speaker 3: I think that he's, you know, who he was at
- 8:13Speaker 3: Notre Dame is a little bit different than who he
- 8:15Speaker 3: is today defensively, not completely, but a little bit. And
- 8:20Speaker 3: so that, you know, shows that the evolution, right, we're
- 8:22Speaker 3: always trying to evolve as coaches, and so a ton
- 8:25Speaker 3: of respect for him. You know, again, I always look
- 8:28Speaker 3: forward to competing against really good coaches, you know, because
- 8:32Speaker 3: that that's our challenge too. And as much as players
- 8:35Speaker 3: love that opportunity compete against the best at their position,
- 8:37Speaker 3: when they go against a guy, coaches aren't much different.
- 8:40Speaker 3: And so I've got a ton of respect for Clark
- 8:42Speaker 3: the job he's doing there, but the job he's done
- 8:44Speaker 3: over his career.
- 8:45Speaker 1: And finally asked about the bottle throwing incident and the
- 8:48Speaker 1: officiating involve and his take on all of that in retrospect.
- 8:52Speaker 3: You know, my thing is, I again, I appreciate, you know,
- 8:57Speaker 3: Chairman l Type and President Hearts One CDC releasing the statement.
- 9:01Speaker 3: I know that we've got a passionate fan base, and
- 9:04Speaker 3: I think that show Saturday night, and you know, I
- 9:07Speaker 3: think we're all a little upset in that moment, and
- 9:10Speaker 3: you know, I just think that we've all got to
- 9:12Speaker 3: use a little better discretion in moments like that that
- 9:15Speaker 3: we don't want that to be the narrative that that's
- 9:17Speaker 3: what you know, DKR is all about. I really appreciate,
- 9:22Speaker 3: I'll say this, I really appreciate our support staff for
- 9:24Speaker 3: getting that thing cleaned up as quickly as they did.
- 9:27Speaker 3: So that we could get the game back moving in
- 9:29Speaker 3: the direction. Was too good of a football game for
- 9:32Speaker 3: that to be the focal point of it all. I
- 9:34Speaker 3: think in the end they got it right, you know.
- 9:37Speaker 3: And how they got to that point, I don't you
- 9:39Speaker 3: know exactly they conferred on that thing, but I think
- 9:41Speaker 3: they got the call right. And I think that's all
- 9:43Speaker 3: we want when we're playing the game as consistency as
- 9:46Speaker 3: coaches and then getting calls correct. And I think they
- 9:49Speaker 3: got the call correctly.
- 9:50Speaker 1: All right, there, it is right. We'll be back to
- 9:52Speaker 1: wrap up today's edition of the program on sports Radio
- 9:54Speaker 1: AM thirteen under the Zone.
