- 0:10Speaker 1: our friends at a Centia Health, teaming up with Corwin

- 0:15Speaker 1: and so every Monday we want to focus on one
- 0:19Speaker 1: person who's been through the battle of breast cancer.
- 0:22Speaker 2: I love that we're able to do this and create
- 0:24Speaker 2: this awareness for everybody.
- 0:25Speaker 1: And so joining us on the phone right now is
- 0:27Speaker 1: one of those people. Her name is Harriet. Good morning, Harriet,
- 0:30Speaker 1: how are you?
- 0:31Speaker 3: I am good, Thank you.
- 0:32Speaker 2: Harriet is on the phone with us and she lives
- 0:35Speaker 2: in DL But Harriet, we are doing our best to
- 0:37Speaker 2: make sure that everybody in our area knows in the
- 0:41Speaker 2: month of October to get a mammogram. And that is
- 0:44Speaker 2: something that you have been doing for so many years.
- 0:46Speaker 1: Yeah, now, you, I understand, are one of the cases
- 0:50Speaker 1: where there is some family history and so when people
- 0:52Speaker 1: talk about, you know, the high risk cases, that was
- 0:55Speaker 1: your situation, right, Yes, you know.
- 0:58Speaker 3: I stayed on top of doing mammograms every year after
- 1:02Speaker 3: my mother passed away from breastcat gay to hear that,
- 1:06Speaker 3: but she did everything she could too for people like
- 1:10Speaker 3: me that get it later. I mean, every time they
- 1:13Speaker 3: try something, they try something on a patient like my
- 1:17Speaker 3: mother who couldn't be cured, it benefits someone like me.
- 1:21Speaker 2: Oh absolutely. And the technology and everything is becoming more
- 1:25Speaker 2: and more advanced. And you were one of those people
- 1:27Speaker 2: going in for your scheduled mammograms and unfortunately last September
- 1:32Speaker 2: you found out that you do, in fact have breast cancer.
- 1:35Speaker 3: Yes.
- 1:35Speaker 1: I just can't imagine. You know, you're living your life
- 1:38Speaker 1: already with this, I'm sure fear of it showing up,
- 1:42Speaker 1: just giving your mom and your family history. And so
- 1:44Speaker 1: when you finally found out that it is here, what
- 1:47Speaker 1: was your emotions.
- 1:49Speaker 3: This is going to sound strange, but it was like
- 1:52Speaker 3: at first, it was like, yeah, right, I didn't feel
- 1:57Speaker 3: any different, do you know what I mean? Either way,
- 2:00Speaker 3: you don't feel any different. Every day is the same
- 2:04Speaker 3: until you start chemo. Then it's a little different.
- 2:07Speaker 2: Yeah. I hear you call it the heavy stuff when
- 2:10Speaker 2: you had to go through those chemo treatments.
- 2:12Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, there's heavy stuff. And then I've got the
- 2:15Speaker 3: light stuff right now.
- 2:17Speaker 2: So well, and we are reading through this and it
- 2:20Speaker 2: sounds like you are on the path to finish your
- 2:22Speaker 2: chemo here in just a couple of weeks.
- 2:25Speaker 3: Yes, I'm done on the tenth.
- 2:27Speaker 2: Oh and how are you feeling.
- 2:29Speaker 3: I'm feeling good. Tired, but good.
- 2:32Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 2:32Speaker 2: Well, you know, the team over at Assensia I'm sure
- 2:34Speaker 2: has been outside of your family, just a huge support.
- 2:38Speaker 3: I can't tell you how great the Essentia Cancer Unit team,
- 2:44Speaker 3: all of them have been Detroit Lakes and in Fargo.
- 2:49Speaker 3: They're just awesome. I mean they walk you through this
- 2:53Speaker 3: with your eyes wide open so that there are no
- 2:56Speaker 3: surprises and stuff. It's just there, wonderful.
- 3:00Speaker 2: You spent a lot of time, especially going through chemo
- 3:03Speaker 2: in the infusion center, and I always hear stories about
- 3:06Speaker 2: people who you know, that's kind of when they become
- 3:08Speaker 2: your second family when you're in there going through these treatments.
- 3:11Speaker 3: Yes, yes, it is. They're so good to you.
- 3:14Speaker 1: Did you when you found out did you notice anything
- 3:17Speaker 1: different about your body or was it just something that
- 3:20Speaker 1: you were in there for a routine scan and they
- 3:23Speaker 1: found out.
- 3:23Speaker 3: I was in for a routine scan and they phoned out.
- 3:27Speaker 2: Well and you said you had gotten it a little
- 3:28Speaker 2: later in life. But it is happening to a lot
- 3:30Speaker 2: of people, men and women, a lot younger. So if
- 3:33Speaker 2: you had advice for people listening to it right now
- 3:35Speaker 2: and not just in the month of October. Of course
- 3:37Speaker 2: we're highlighting this with Brazen Big ninety eight point seven.
- 3:39Speaker 2: But what would you tell people about giving yourself mammograms?
- 3:43Speaker 3: Well, I would recommend everyone get one. It may be uncomfortable,
- 3:48Speaker 3: but it's only for a few minutes or seconds even
- 3:52Speaker 3: and as far as it goes, I think the self
- 3:56Speaker 3: exam is also very very important part of being able
- 4:02Speaker 3: to diagnose because you have three D when you're checking,
- 4:07Speaker 3: as opposed to if your doctor has to do.
- 4:10Speaker 2: It, absolutely beas that's with your body.
- 4:13Speaker 3: And you will know it's just weird, but you will
- 4:15Speaker 3: know if it's not right.
- 4:17Speaker 1: Yep, that's for sure. We hear it all the time.
- 4:19Speaker 1: So Harriet, we're so glad to hear that you're you're
- 4:21Speaker 1: going to be wrapping up your treatment here and that
- 4:23Speaker 1: you're feeling okay. But we're thinking about you, and thank
- 4:26Speaker 1: you so much. I know it's not easy to share
- 4:28Speaker 1: your story, but we appreciate it.
- 4:30Speaker 3: Well, thank you, and thank you for spreading the word.
- 4:33Speaker 3: I appreciate it
