- 0:00Vox LIturgica: The propers of the day according to the 1962 Roman Missal. The feast of Saint Augustine, Bishop of Hippo. August 28 in the year of our Lord 2026.
- 0:22Of today's feast, Don Gaspar Lefevre writes the following. Augustine was born in 354 at Togosta in Algeria.
- 0:34His mother Saint Monica taught him early to pray. After having received with delight her holy teaching he was soon led into the gravest disorders. Carthage not offering him a theater worthy of his genius he went to Rome and obtained the post of master of rhetoric at Milan. My iniquities, he confesses, were like a ball of snow growing in size as it rolls. His desolate mother prayed to God incessantly with tears still following the steps of her son.
- 1:19Saint Ambrose Bishop of Milan received him kindly and enlightened him in divine knowledge. One day inspired by heaven he opened the epistles of Saint Paul and read, Wallow not in debauchery and impurity but clothe yourselves in our Lord Jesus Christ. His irresolution immediately ceased and at 33 years of age on Easter eve three eighty seven he was baptized. Seven months after this great happiness Saint Monica died asking her son to remember her at the altar of God. Augustine become a priest offered the holy sacrifice for her.
- 2:21Lord, he often said, have mercy on my mother. She was good. She pardoned easily. Pardon her also her sins. Made Bishop of Hippo at the age of 41, he began from that moment to live canonically, that is to say in common with his clerks.
- 2:48The word canon, canonicus, derives from canon in the sense of list of clerks attached to a church with a stipend for their subsistence. To live canonically was to live in common. Later on it meant to lead a regular life under a rule. This community gave bishops and priests to many churches and thus the Institute of Saint Augustine spread little by little in Africa and more specially in Gaul. The rule of Saint Augustine which makes him one of the four great founders of religious orders is drawn from the two hundred and eleventh epistle which he wrote for nuns and which later on was adapted for men.
- 3:43Owing to the sublimity of his knowledge in the ardor of his love this saint was also one of the four great doctors of the West. He died in the year of our Lord 430 after an episcopate of thirty six years reciting the penitential psalms. In the name of the father and of the son and of the holy ghost. Amen. The introit.
- 4:20In the midst of the church he opened his mouth and the Lord filled him with the spirit of wisdom and understanding. He clothed him with a robe of glory. Sweet it is to praise the Lord, to sing most high God in honor of thy name. Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost as it was in the beginning is now and will be through all ages of ages. Amen.
- 4:57In the midst of the church he opened his mouth and the Lord filled him with the spirit of wisdom and understanding. He clothed him with a robe of glory. The Collect, let us pray. Give ear to our prayers, O Almighty God, and by the intercession of blessed Augustine, thy confessor and Bishop, graciously grant the effect of thine accustomed mercy to those in whom thou dost encourage a strong trust in the kindness of God. A commemoration of Saint Hermes.
- 5:43Oh God who did strengthen blessed Hermes thy martyr with the virtue of constancy in his suffering. Grant us in imitation of him to despise the prosperity of the world for love of thee and not to fear worldly adversity through our Lord Jesus Christ, thy Son, who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God through all ages of ages. Amen. A lesson from the second letter of Saint Paul the Apostle to Timothy. Dearly beloved, I charge you in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus who is to judge the living and the dead and by his appearing and his kingdom.
- 6:43Preach the word. Be urgent in season and out of season. Convince, rebuke, and exhort. Be unfailing in patience and in doctrine for the time is coming when men will not endure sound doctrine but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own likings and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander into myths. As for you, always be steady, endure suffering, employ yourself in preaching the gospel, fulfill your ministry.
- 7:36For I am already being poured out in sacrifice. The time of my departure has come. I have fought the good fight. I have finished the race. I have kept the faith.
- 7:53Henceforth there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness which the Lord, the righteous judge, will award to me on that day and not only to me but also to all who have loved his advent. The gradual. The mouth of the just shall meditate wisdom and his tongue shall speak judgment. The law of God is in his heart and his steps shall not be supplanted. Alleluia.
- 8:32Alleluia. I have found David, my servant. With my holy oil I have anointed him. Alleluia. A continuation of the Holy Gospel according to Matthew.
- 8:52At that time Jesus said to his disciples, you are the salt of the earth. But if salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltiness be restored? It is no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trodden underfoot by men. You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hid nor do men light a lamp and put it under a bushel but on a stand and it gives light to all in the house.
- 9:33Let your light so shine before men that they may see your good works, and give glory to your Father who is in heaven. Think not that I have come to abolish the law and the prophets. I have not come to abolish them, but to fulfill them. For truly I say to you till heaven and earth pass away, not an iota, not a dot will pass from the law until all is accomplished. Whoever then relaxes one of the least of these commandments and so teaches men shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven.
- 10:24But he that shall do them and teach them shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven. The offertory, The just man shall flourish like the palm tree. He shall grow to greatness like the cedars of Lebanon. The secret, May the loving prayers of Augustine, thy Bishop and Doctor, be not wanting to us, O Lord, to commend our gifts and ever obtain pardon for us. A commemoration of Saint Hermes.
- 11:08Receive our gifts and our prayers we beseech thee, O Lord. Cleanse us by the heavenly mysteries and graciously hear us through our Lord Jesus Christ, thy Son, who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God, through all ages of ages. Amen. The common preface. Just it is indeed and fitting, right in for our salvation, that we should at all times and in all places give thanks unto thee.
- 11:49Oh, holy Lord, father almighty, everlasting God, through whom the angels praise thy majesty. The dominions worship it. The power stand in awe. The heavens and the hosts of heaven together with the blessed Seraphim joyfully do magnify. We entreat thee that thou command it be permitted us to join with them in confessing thee while we say with lowly praise.
- 12:23Holy, holy, holy, Lord God of hosts, The heavens and the earth are full of thy glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. The communion.
- 12:49He is a faithful and wise servant whom the Lord setteth over his family to give them their measure of wheat in due season. The Post Communion. Let us pray. That thy sacrifices may give us health, O Lord. May blessed Augustine, thy Bishop and illustrious Doctor, we beseech thee act as our intercessor.
- 13:21A commemoration of Saint Hermes Filled with heavenly blessings, O Lord, we beseech thy mercy that by the intercession of blessed Hermes, thy martyr, we may feel the salutary effect of that which we humbly perform through our Lord Jesus Christ, thy son, who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God through all ages of ages. Amen. In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost. Amen. Saint Augustine, pray for us.
- 14:12Saint Hermes, pray for us.
