Transcript
- 0:01Speaker 1: Welcome to the Wired to Hunt podcast, home of the
- 0:05Speaker 1: modern white tail hunter, and now your host Mark Kenyon.
- 0:11Speaker 1: Welcome to the Wire to Hunt Podcast. I'm your guest
- 0:13Speaker 1: host Tony Peterson, and this is episode number four thirty four.
- 0:17Speaker 1: Today on the show, we've got outdoor writer and archery
- 0:20Speaker 1: nut Jason Bosserman, and we're going to dive deep into
- 0:23Speaker 1: what he considers the perfect white tail bow set up. Everybody,
- 0:40Speaker 1: Welcome to the Wire to Hunt podcast, which is brought
- 0:42Speaker 1: to you by First Light. I am your guest host
- 0:46Speaker 1: Tony Peterson. Mark is off somewhere today and he just
- 0:49Speaker 1: he sent me a text and said he's got a
- 0:52Speaker 1: new saddle hunting strategy where he wants to be more
- 0:55Speaker 1: limber and more flexible, and so he's down at a
- 0:58Speaker 1: hot yoga slash ballet retreat. I guess he said something
- 1:02Speaker 1: like that. So he's gonna be a monster in the
- 1:05Speaker 1: uh the saddle this fall. I guess that's his plan.
- 1:08Speaker 1: So you've got me this week. And since we're kind
- 1:11Speaker 1: of in the heart of the summer and really thinking
- 1:13Speaker 1: a lot about shooting and gear and and summertime scouting,
- 1:17Speaker 1: I wanted to have Jason Bosserman on. Jason is a
- 1:20Speaker 1: outdoor writer. He's a podcast host. He is one of
- 1:25Speaker 1: the people I know who's set up probably more bows
- 1:27Speaker 1: than just about anyone else out there. Really really a
- 1:31Speaker 1: gear Junkie's a Western guy who has fallen in love
- 1:34Speaker 1: with white tail hunting. So he takes his archery tackle seriously.
- 1:38Speaker 1: And so I want to do just a total bow breakdown.
- 1:42Speaker 1: Why do you do this? Why do you do that?
- 1:43Speaker 1: What's your white tail set up look like? And we
- 1:46Speaker 1: really get into the weeds and a lot of stuff.
- 1:48Speaker 1: This is a kind of a gear centric podcast, but
- 1:50Speaker 1: it also ties in summer shooting practice, how you should
- 1:55Speaker 1: how you should address those things, and how it applies
- 1:57Speaker 1: to being a better shot in the white tail. It's
- 2:00Speaker 1: really interesting podcast. Jason is an awesome guest. I think
- 2:03Speaker 1: you're gonna love it. Jase Michael, how are you, buddy?
- 2:07Speaker 1: I am well, Mr Peterson, how are you doing this
- 2:09Speaker 1: this wonderful morning? I'm great. I'm drinking coffee out of
- 2:12Speaker 1: a frozen mug, uh, not not like a physically frozen mug,
- 2:16Speaker 1: like a Disney frozen mug, and it's delicious. And I
- 2:19Speaker 1: just work some dogs and now I want to talk
- 2:21Speaker 1: to you about some bow hunting gear. First question though,
- 2:25Speaker 1: So it's about degrees here. So is it like two
- 2:30Speaker 1: d where you live? We just got Yeah, I just
- 2:35Speaker 1: went outside and checked. I let the dogs out, well,
- 2:37Speaker 1: and or let the dogs out. And you don't have
- 2:39Speaker 1: to lie, dude. I know you're drinking out of Lila
- 2:41Speaker 1: sippy cup frozen Disney. You're a Disney guy. See oh. Man, So,
- 2:50Speaker 1: so is it super super super hot out there or not?
- 2:53Speaker 1: It is super hot, we but we weren't. Man. We
- 2:55Speaker 1: have had more rain in the last month than we've
- 2:58Speaker 1: probably gotten in the last two years combined, I'd say
- 3:01Speaker 1: over the last month and a half. So now it
- 3:04Speaker 1: is though we we hit a hundred yesterday, We're going
- 3:06Speaker 1: to hit a hundred and one today, and then we're
- 3:08Speaker 1: kind of going to get into that hot dry spell
- 3:10Speaker 1: that usually is June first part of July, and then
- 3:12Speaker 1: hopefully we'll catch our monsoon season at the end of July.
- 3:16Speaker 1: Because everything here right now is you'd actually come here
- 3:19Speaker 1: and want to be here and not question why why
- 3:21Speaker 1: I want to live here? Like the plains are like
- 3:23Speaker 1: super green, the prairie grass is up to your calf.
- 3:27Speaker 1: I mean, the river bottoms are gorgeous, The fields look good,
- 3:29Speaker 1: So it's it's it's a pretty time to to live
- 3:32Speaker 1: here right now, but it will be short lived. Yeah,
- 3:34Speaker 1: that's uh, I've I've fallen for that trip for Yeah. Yeah,
- 3:39Speaker 1: it should be good antelope hunting though for you this
- 3:41Speaker 1: year with those conditions, I hope, So, yeah, it should
- 3:44Speaker 1: be good. If the numbers are there, we'll we'll be fine.
- 3:46Speaker 1: So we're gonna talk about white tail gear. But I
- 3:50Speaker 1: had a thought earlier, earlier today. I was when I
- 3:53Speaker 1: was working the dogs. You drew a sheep tag this year.
- 3:57Speaker 1: I did nineteen years of applying and I drew a
- 4:01Speaker 1: sheep tag. So I was thinking, I don't know how
- 4:03Speaker 1: many guest marks had on this podcast. It's a lot.
- 4:06Speaker 1: And I was like, I'll bet I bet Jason isn't
- 4:09Speaker 1: the only one who's drawn a sheep tag on here,
- 4:11Speaker 1: because he's probably had Lelakowski and some of those guys on.
- 4:13Speaker 1: But I bet you're the poorest guy to ever draw
- 4:16Speaker 1: sheep tag on this podcast. I am the poorest guy
- 4:19Speaker 1: to ever draw a sheep tag, and it will be
- 4:20Speaker 1: the only sheep tag I ever have because I'll never
- 4:23Speaker 1: draw again in Colorado. Um. In my younger years, I
- 4:27Speaker 1: I mean, as a struggling outdoor writer, I didn't have
- 4:30Speaker 1: the money to put in in various states for cheap um.
- 4:34Speaker 1: So this will be my one, one and done on sheep.
- 4:36Speaker 1: But I feel very fortunate to have the tag. And
- 4:39Speaker 1: uh yeah, season starts August first, and so all all
- 4:43Speaker 1: preparations are being made and I'm really just I'm really
- 4:45Speaker 1: excited to have have the tag drew, to have drawn
- 4:49Speaker 1: the unit that I drew, and and it's gonna be
- 4:51Speaker 1: a lot of fun. It's it's gonna be a blast.
- 4:54Speaker 1: So you you live in arguably the flattest place in
- 4:57Speaker 1: the country, how do you practice for sheep hunt? Well, um,
- 5:03Speaker 1: practice shooting wise or just okay, so it's it's a
- 5:08Speaker 1: little bit difficult. But what what I'm what I'm doing
- 5:10Speaker 1: is just making sure that everything is everything is flying
- 5:14Speaker 1: good and true, you know, obviously on flat ground, um
- 5:17Speaker 1: as far as I as far as I want to shoot,
- 5:19Speaker 1: you know, shooting typically out to a hundred and twenty yards,
- 5:22Speaker 1: not I'm definitely not gonna shoot at a sheep and
- 5:24Speaker 1: a hundred twenty yards, but just making sure that the
- 5:27Speaker 1: bow and everything that that my my arrow broadhead combo
- 5:30Speaker 1: is dialed in um, those types of things. And then
- 5:33Speaker 1: I've actually made a few trips just to the canyon
- 5:36Speaker 1: country out here, which we do have where I can
- 5:38Speaker 1: practice some steep angled shots, and I've just totaled, um,
- 5:42Speaker 1: you know, either a block or a small three D target,
- 5:44Speaker 1: and position that target at step angles up and downhill, um,
- 5:49Speaker 1: checking my third axis that sort of thing, and making
- 5:51Speaker 1: sure that that everything is is spot on ready. But
- 5:54Speaker 1: it is a challenge to practice those type of shots here, um,
- 5:57Speaker 1: but I don't have to go too far to do it.
- 5:59Speaker 1: So I've been trying to do that once a week,
- 6:01Speaker 1: um without fail, and and not making an excuse not
- 6:05Speaker 1: to drive the thirty forty minutes out there and not
- 6:07Speaker 1: get that done, because you know, the chances of that
- 6:10Speaker 1: shot being on flat ground is going to be pretty minimal.
- 6:12Speaker 1: So I want to make sure that my form um,
- 6:15Speaker 1: you know, bending at the waist, making sure that everything
- 6:18Speaker 1: is just right. Then I'm climbing into my anchor and
- 6:19Speaker 1: executing through my hinge properly. All those things have to
- 6:23Speaker 1: be just right, so I don't want to leave anything
- 6:25Speaker 1: to chance. So it's just like anything else, right, it's
- 6:27Speaker 1: just staying discipline and making sure that you're dedicating that
- 6:29Speaker 1: time and and making yourself available to go get that
- 6:33Speaker 1: work in. Yeah, and you you shoot a lot anyway,
- 6:37Speaker 1: you set up a lot of bows and you you're
- 6:39Speaker 1: a gear head for sure when it comes to archery.
- 6:43Speaker 1: But how much how much added pressure do you feel,
- 6:47Speaker 1: you know, practice wise? I know, I know physically, Like
- 6:50Speaker 1: for the people who don't know, you're always working out
- 6:52Speaker 1: and running, and you've done Hunter Mountain marathons. You're probably
- 6:55Speaker 1: not that worried about that aspect compared to a lot
- 6:58Speaker 1: of people would be. But what's the pressure situation like
- 7:01Speaker 1: to just not totally shank a shot on a sheep? Well,
- 7:05Speaker 1: so much that I don't even want to talk about it,
- 7:06Speaker 1: and I'm pissed that you put it out there in
- 7:08Speaker 1: the universe. Thanks dick Um. There's no way you're going
- 7:12Speaker 1: to screw up an easy shot on a sheep. Yeah. No,
- 7:16Speaker 1: I you know, I a guy I know in Gunnison.
- 7:21Speaker 1: Well I'm getting to know him as up where I
- 7:24Speaker 1: drew this tag. His name is Connor Clark. He his
- 7:26Speaker 1: dad owns a trading post there where they they trade
- 7:28Speaker 1: antlers and it's an amazing store. If you're ever in
- 7:30Speaker 1: the Gunnison area, like it's it's it's an incredible store.
- 7:33Speaker 1: And Connor actually drew that tag last year during the
- 7:35Speaker 1: late season and we got to talk and he actually
- 7:39Speaker 1: sent me a video of his hunt. Heeper out along
- 7:41Speaker 1: a videographer and he had the hunt video and he
- 7:43Speaker 1: actually he missed a ram. I mean on the video
- 7:46Speaker 1: he missed, he missed a ram, and you could just
- 7:49Speaker 1: see like the devastation of thinking it was over and
- 7:53Speaker 1: like it was my once in a lifetime opportunity. And
- 7:56Speaker 1: you know, three or four days, I'm not sure how
- 7:58Speaker 1: many days later he killed. He killed a bigger ram. Um.
- 8:02Speaker 1: And talking to him, he's like, man, I considered myself
- 8:04Speaker 1: Iceman and tel you're at full draw on a big
- 8:07Speaker 1: on a once in a lifetime big horn sheep. So
- 8:09Speaker 1: he's like, just keep that, keep that in mind. Um.
- 8:13Speaker 1: So you know, I'm just trying to constantly put myself
- 8:17Speaker 1: in as much pressure situations as I can while I'm shooting. Um,
- 8:22Speaker 1: just you know, I'll go run, I'll lift really heavy
- 8:24Speaker 1: and then um come home and shoot. Just just different
- 8:27Speaker 1: things like that to just try to up the any
- 8:29Speaker 1: a little bit and then just making sure right now
- 8:33Speaker 1: I'm not focused on how many arrows I'm shooting per day. Um.
- 8:37Speaker 1: A lot of guys will go out and they'll shoot
- 8:38Speaker 1: two hundred arrows to say they shot two hundred arrows. Um.
- 8:41Speaker 1: You know, yesterday I stepped out and I shot five
- 8:44Speaker 1: arrows at sixty five yards. And I'm just making sure
- 8:49Speaker 1: that my execution that I make the best shot that
- 8:52Speaker 1: I can make for every arrow that I send, And
- 8:54Speaker 1: that's my goal. That's always my goal. But I've really
- 8:56Speaker 1: been honing in on that from this point forward is
- 8:59Speaker 1: making sure whether I step in the backyard to shoot
- 9:01Speaker 1: at twenty yards or I'm shooting at a hundred and
- 9:04Speaker 1: twenty yards, that my execution from the time that I
- 9:08Speaker 1: get into my bow to the time I crawl into
- 9:10Speaker 1: the anchor and tell my release breaks that might fall through,
- 9:14Speaker 1: that everything is just that that arrow is the best
- 9:17Speaker 1: arrow that I can make. Because I I think it
- 9:20Speaker 1: was General Patton that that had a quote that's really
- 9:22Speaker 1: stuck with me, and I'm not sure it's him, but
- 9:24Speaker 1: he said, if a man gives his best, what else
- 9:25Speaker 1: is there? And so that's kind of way the way
- 9:27Speaker 1: I'm going into this hunt is I'm giving my best. Physically,
- 9:31Speaker 1: I'm preparing myself mentally, and I'm preparing to make the
- 9:34Speaker 1: best shot that I possibly can if I'm if I
- 9:36Speaker 1: earned that opportunity, and you know, at the end of
- 9:39Speaker 1: the day, if I go through those things, I'm confident
- 9:41Speaker 1: that that I won't botch it. Well, you know, it's
- 9:46Speaker 1: it's so easy to to think about this, uh to
- 9:51Speaker 1: to to accept the importance and the dedication to that
- 9:54Speaker 1: tag and and the shooting, and you know, it's you
- 9:57Speaker 1: know that you can't just go up and get into
- 9:59Speaker 1: the mountains of sculpt a sheep all the time. So
- 10:01Speaker 1: you gotta control what you can control. And I think
- 10:04Speaker 1: that you know, in the white tail world, we really
- 10:07Speaker 1: gloss over this aspect a lot. Like there are people
- 10:09Speaker 1: who are who are you know, gear junkies who shoot
- 10:13Speaker 1: a lot and they like the they like the flight
- 10:15Speaker 1: of the arrow right, But we we focus so hard
- 10:19Speaker 1: on scouting and finding the spot and patterning the book
- 10:22Speaker 1: and finding that buck ben and doing that kind of
- 10:24Speaker 1: stuff that we've kind of just like missed the message
- 10:28Speaker 1: a little bit that it's it's real important to keep
- 10:31Speaker 1: shooting and to get into that muscle memory situation so
- 10:34Speaker 1: you can go on autopilot because you're gonna get some
- 10:36Speaker 1: level of buck fever. Most of us are, especially if
- 10:39Speaker 1: we're working at it hard on public land or pressure deer,
- 10:43Speaker 1: and that muscle memory and that just going into the
- 10:45Speaker 1: zone thing where even if your brain shuts down, you
- 10:48Speaker 1: can still make it happen. That's important. It's huge, it's
- 10:51Speaker 1: it's massively important. And I think that's where you have
- 10:53Speaker 1: to be honest with yourself. You know, here, guys tell
- 10:55Speaker 1: me all the time. You know, I don't get buck
- 10:56Speaker 1: fever at all. I never get buck fever. You know.
- 10:59Speaker 1: I don't know how many animals I've taken with my bow,
- 11:01Speaker 1: but it's been a bunch. And if I go to
- 11:04Speaker 1: shoot a dough to this day, there is an element
- 11:07Speaker 1: of buck fever. What even though it's a dope that
- 11:10Speaker 1: sets in and it's preparing for and being able to
- 11:13Speaker 1: handle that and still execute in those situations. You can.
- 11:16Speaker 1: I've always said you can. You can scout and and
- 11:19Speaker 1: you know, I could know where this ram that hopefully
- 11:21Speaker 1: is mine, that is living out there somewhere is gonna
- 11:23Speaker 1: go and and and be, and I could know the
- 11:26Speaker 1: rock he's gonna stand on and everything like that. I
- 11:29Speaker 1: could do all of that, But if I can't execute
- 11:32Speaker 1: and I haven't done my job in that in those terms.
- 11:35Speaker 1: Then the scouting and the maps and talking to these
- 11:38Speaker 1: guys that have had the tag, and visiting with biologists
- 11:40Speaker 1: and looking at winner mortality and all the things that
- 11:43Speaker 1: that go into to any type of hunt that I mean,
- 11:47Speaker 1: they're kind of for not at that point you have
- 11:50Speaker 1: the experience of that, but at the end of the day,
- 11:52Speaker 1: you you have a sob story to tell rather than
- 11:55Speaker 1: oh my gosh, yeah, I mean, it was an amazing
- 11:58Speaker 1: experience from top to bottom, and I finished the way
- 12:00Speaker 1: I wanted to finish. Um. It was a clean shot.
- 12:03Speaker 1: The animal expired quickly, and you know, and that should
- 12:07Speaker 1: be the goal of of whether you're holding you know,
- 12:10Speaker 1: whether you have a sheep tag in your hand, or
- 12:12Speaker 1: whether you're going to go out and and then your dope,
- 12:14Speaker 1: then your dough herd or something along those lines. It's
- 12:17Speaker 1: it's our responsibility to make sure that we're at our
- 12:19Speaker 1: best when we're shooting. And I know that it's easy
- 12:23Speaker 1: to get caught up in like you said, man, that
- 12:25Speaker 1: the scouting and figuring that buck out and and and
- 12:28Speaker 1: where his home ranges and and where he's watering and bedding,
- 12:31Speaker 1: and whereas whereas you know where he's going to eat
- 12:33Speaker 1: and all the different things that go into that. But
- 12:37Speaker 1: you have to be able to um execute because if
- 12:40Speaker 1: you do things right. You and I have talked about
- 12:42Speaker 1: this before, chances are you're gonna earn your opportunity. You know,
- 12:45Speaker 1: you're gonna get that shot. You're gonna get that chance.
- 12:48Speaker 1: And if you're prepared for that chance, your odds of
- 12:51Speaker 1: finishing the way you wanted to finish, the way you
- 12:53Speaker 1: imagine finishing um in your brain, will will will come
- 13:00Speaker 1: will come true, you know. And I think you have
- 13:01Speaker 1: to have that visualization. You know, I visualized myself holding
- 13:05Speaker 1: that ram. I visualize my arrow hitting home where it
- 13:08Speaker 1: needs to be. I'm you know, you have to step
- 13:11Speaker 1: away from the negativity. And they're like, oh my gosh,
- 13:13Speaker 1: what if what if? Put it? As soon as you
- 13:15Speaker 1: start putting that into your mind. Um, you know, things
- 13:18Speaker 1: can go south in a hurry. Um. So it's an
- 13:21Speaker 1: easy it's an easy thing to talk about and say,
- 13:23Speaker 1: but it's a hard thing to do. Yeah, well it's
- 13:27Speaker 1: it's uh, you know, when we I've I've written about
- 13:29Speaker 1: buck fever and I've talked about a ton and I
- 13:32Speaker 1: think you have to just accept the fact that you
- 13:36Speaker 1: know that it's it's there at some level always, like
- 13:40Speaker 1: you said, and it can rear its head at stupid
- 13:42Speaker 1: times you don't expect, and so you just sort of
- 13:45Speaker 1: learned to compartmentalize it and go, Okay, that little part
- 13:48Speaker 1: that sucks, it's gonna be there. Like I I deal
- 13:50Speaker 1: with this, and it always comes up at such weird times,
- 13:53Speaker 1: like there'll be times where I'll see a buck coming
- 13:56Speaker 1: down the trail that I've been working on for on
- 13:58Speaker 1: public land. I'm like, he's like, I'm just so confident.
- 14:02Speaker 1: And there'll be times where I go where it's just
- 14:04Speaker 1: like this should be an easy one and They're gonna
- 14:06Speaker 1: come out into this field and I'm gonna shoot them,
- 14:08Speaker 1: and I will screw it up so bad, and it's
- 14:11Speaker 1: just like a reminder that it it's you can think, Okay, well,
- 14:16Speaker 1: I'm I am the ice man like you said, and
- 14:17Speaker 1: I will never I'm not gonna shank this ever or
- 14:20Speaker 1: whatever like you will, like it's coming, and it's just
- 14:24Speaker 1: you don't know when. And so it's like you have
- 14:26Speaker 1: to be aware that every time you do this is
- 14:29Speaker 1: sort of like you know it's not the first time,
- 14:31Speaker 1: but you have to understand, like, the potential for failure
- 14:34Speaker 1: is there, so you have to do your part. Yeah,
- 14:37Speaker 1: the potential for failure is always there, especially when you're
- 14:40Speaker 1: both hunting. Um, it's Murphy's law in a lot of
- 14:43Speaker 1: ways than anything that you know can go wrong will
- 14:46Speaker 1: go wrong. And but it's it's being it's preparing to
- 14:50Speaker 1: make sure that that that that doesn't happen to the best,
- 14:53Speaker 1: to the best that you possibly can. Yeah. Uh for
- 14:56Speaker 1: this for this sheep hunt, or did you set up
- 14:59Speaker 1: a boast? But typically for that I did? Um, I did,
- 15:04Speaker 1: just being the gearhead that I am and wanting to
- 15:05Speaker 1: make sure that everything is exactly the way I want it.
- 15:09Speaker 1: I have played with multiple setups, Um, but I've got
- 15:13Speaker 1: everything dialed down to exactly at this point. I mean,
- 15:16Speaker 1: it's June. What are we June nine, I'm less than
- 15:19Speaker 1: two months away from the opener, and nothing will change
- 15:22Speaker 1: at this point, you know on the cheep set up
- 15:24Speaker 1: look like for you then so for me, my my
- 15:27Speaker 1: cheep set up right now is I'm shooting Hoyt's venom,
- 15:31Speaker 1: um and it's uh the venom thirty three, So it's
- 15:35Speaker 1: a thirty three in Axel to Axel bow. It's got
- 15:38Speaker 1: a it's gotta what I would consider to be a
- 15:39Speaker 1: forgiving brace height. It's not too light, it's not too heavy. Um.
- 15:43Speaker 1: It's got a stabilizer mount on it that I really
- 15:47Speaker 1: like that that that puts weight where I need it
- 15:50Speaker 1: and allows me to customize that weight. UM. And Plus
- 15:53Speaker 1: I can run a backbar stabilizer. And I have that
- 15:57Speaker 1: bow set up to right now where you know, speed
- 16:00Speaker 1: is secondary for me. UM with this particular bow. UM,
- 16:04Speaker 1: I'm shooting a micro diameter arrow, but I'm still I'm
- 16:08Speaker 1: still right around grains, right right in there. And for me, UM,
- 16:14Speaker 1: the smooth draw, being able to climb into my anchor
- 16:18Speaker 1: um let that pin, settle and and and hold without
- 16:21Speaker 1: those cans itching to press themselves into action. UM and
- 16:25Speaker 1: and being able to be very balanced and controlled is
- 16:28Speaker 1: what I was looking for when I set up my
- 16:30Speaker 1: sheet bow. I want I want maximum control UM from
- 16:34Speaker 1: start to finish. Are you using a fourteen pin sight?
- 16:37Speaker 1: Are you using a single pin movie? Definitely, definitely not
- 16:42Speaker 1: using a fourteen pin site. I am using I am
- 16:46Speaker 1: gonna stay with my single pin spot hog hog Father
- 16:49Speaker 1: slider site. And I know that's that's something where a
- 16:51Speaker 1: lot of people, A lot of people can argue that, Um,
- 16:56Speaker 1: but uh, for me personally, UM, a single pin site.
- 17:02Speaker 1: I like that dial to the yard, making sure that
- 17:05Speaker 1: I'm able to dial to the yard. Um. I like
- 17:07Speaker 1: being able to have that ability too. And and plus
- 17:11Speaker 1: it's for me, it's part of my shot process as
- 17:13Speaker 1: a whole. Um. I know that once I get my range,
- 17:16Speaker 1: you know, I go directly to my site and I
- 17:18Speaker 1: dial into that yard. And that has become so ingrained
- 17:21Speaker 1: in me, from white tails to elk to everything that
- 17:23Speaker 1: that is just simply a part of my simply a
- 17:26Speaker 1: part of my process. So I am going with the
- 17:29Speaker 1: single pin site. Again, I like that dial to the
- 17:31Speaker 1: yard capability. And again that's what I am, That's what
- 17:35Speaker 1: I'm absolutely the most familiar with. When you think of
- 17:39Speaker 1: you know, the main argument against a single pin mover
- 17:42Speaker 1: is they don't want to mess around when animal comes
- 17:45Speaker 1: into twenty yards and they were dialed to forty or whatever.
- 17:47Speaker 1: But when you think about a sheep situation, you're most
- 17:51Speaker 1: likely gonna range that sucker forty six times before you
- 17:54Speaker 1: get the shot, before he stands up or whatever it's
- 17:56Speaker 1: gonna be. Yeah, that that's a good choice. What do
- 17:59Speaker 1: you do you set up? Then do you do you
- 18:01Speaker 1: set up a dedicated white white tail bow? I do? Yep,
- 18:05Speaker 1: I I well, let me rephrase that sometimes I do
- 18:08Speaker 1: and sometimes I don't. This year, this year, I definitely
- 18:10Speaker 1: will set up a dedicated white tailbow, just because everything
- 18:13Speaker 1: right now is set up so Western oriented for me.
- 18:16Speaker 1: Um that I definitely am going to set up a
- 18:18Speaker 1: dedicated uh white tailbow. What's different about that? No stabilizer, No,
- 18:24Speaker 1: I'm not you. I still I still am going to
- 18:27Speaker 1: I'm still going to run run my stabilizer system the
- 18:31Speaker 1: way that I want to run my stabilizer system. Um. However,
- 18:35Speaker 1: what's different for me in in a white tail situation?
- 18:38Speaker 1: And this is where I think a lot of guys
- 18:40Speaker 1: might overlook or I I pull fewer pounds when I'm
- 18:45Speaker 1: when I'm when I'm hunting white tails, I just do. UM.
- 18:47Speaker 1: I know that my shots are going to usually be
- 18:49Speaker 1: between twenty and forty yards UM, and so I'm not
- 18:54Speaker 1: overly concerned with with the poundage that I'm pulling. I
- 18:57Speaker 1: want to make sure that when the conditions are there
- 19:00Speaker 1: worst and I'm bundled up in tons of tons of
- 19:03Speaker 1: clothing and I'm trying to stay warm and I'm sitting
- 19:05Speaker 1: in my stand, and those types of things that when
- 19:07Speaker 1: I go and I hook onto my release, that I
- 19:09Speaker 1: can that I can hold my bow directly out in
- 19:11Speaker 1: front of me and bring that string straight back to
- 19:14Speaker 1: reduce movement, UM, to reduce anything like that where that
- 19:17Speaker 1: buck might snap its gaze up on and settle fix
- 19:20Speaker 1: its gaze on me up on the stand. I want
- 19:22Speaker 1: to make sure that I can come come directly back
- 19:25Speaker 1: crawling to my anchor and then execute the shot that
- 19:27Speaker 1: the way that I need to the way that I
- 19:29Speaker 1: need to execute. So draw weight is something that I
- 19:31Speaker 1: always pay very close attention to. And the only way
- 19:34Speaker 1: you'll know, UM. I see a lot of guys when
- 19:37Speaker 1: they go to draw their bow, even even at a
- 19:39Speaker 1: local three D shoot or something like that. In there
- 19:41Speaker 1: they're pointing that riser to the sky and you can
- 19:43Speaker 1: just see the struggle on their faces. They're coming to
- 19:45Speaker 1: full draw or they're pointing that bow almost down at
- 19:48Speaker 1: the ground and then bringing you know, to to to
- 19:51Speaker 1: get to full draw. And and those are tailtail signs
- 19:53Speaker 1: that you're pulling too much weight. And that's standing on
- 19:56Speaker 1: a range in shorts in a T shirt, UM and
- 20:00Speaker 1: not shooting in you know, twenty degrees wearing tons of clothing,
- 20:05Speaker 1: So you need to you need to be able to
- 20:06Speaker 1: practice those things. And no, um that the draw weight
- 20:11Speaker 1: is essential. Um. These bows right now they produce absolutely
- 20:15Speaker 1: so much kinetic energy. Um that, I mean, what are
- 20:21Speaker 1: you drawing for a weight for white tails? So right
- 20:24Speaker 1: now my bow is set, my white tail bow will
- 20:26Speaker 1: be set at sixty pounds. It will be but somewhere
- 20:28Speaker 1: between sixty and sixty five by the time I get
- 20:31Speaker 1: by the time I get everything backed out and I
- 20:33Speaker 1: get my you know, my limbolts where where I want them,
- 20:36Speaker 1: and they're they're set up correctly. Um, then then I'll
- 20:39Speaker 1: go through and I'll hook on my digital bow scale
- 20:41Speaker 1: and I'll come to full draw and I'll get that
- 20:44Speaker 1: exact weight rate, weight range. But I want that to
- 20:47Speaker 1: be somewhere between sixty and sixty five pounds. If it
- 20:50Speaker 1: falls somewhere in there for me, I know that that's
- 20:52Speaker 1: where I'm at my absolute best with that. Have you
- 20:56Speaker 1: had any shoulder injuries? So yeah, I mean I have
- 20:59Speaker 1: experience to shoulder injury, and for me, in my opinion,
- 21:02Speaker 1: it was from overshooting and pulling pulling two too much,
- 21:08Speaker 1: too many pounds when I was when I was shooting,
- 21:11Speaker 1: so I was commonly pulling somewhere between seventy and seventy
- 21:14Speaker 1: three pounds and testing tons of bows per year and
- 21:17Speaker 1: setting up tons of bows and going through the paces
- 21:19Speaker 1: of that and firing hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of arrows,
- 21:23Speaker 1: and that that takes its toll, I mean, that takes
- 21:26Speaker 1: its toll on the body. And you know, eventually things
- 21:29Speaker 1: just started to break down, and tell I experienced a
- 21:32Speaker 1: shoulder injury to the point where I was wondering if
- 21:34Speaker 1: I was going to be able to hunt that fall,
- 21:36Speaker 1: or if I was going to have to go to
- 21:37Speaker 1: a crossbow or something like that, because I simply couldn't.
- 21:40Speaker 1: I mean I couldn't. I couldn't pull back thirty pounds UM.
- 21:44Speaker 1: And so for me, that was when that was for
- 21:47Speaker 1: me when draw weights became very critical. I did hardly
- 21:52Speaker 1: paid attention to it. I shot twenty nine inch draw length,
- 21:55Speaker 1: and I shot seventy pounds. And if that bow arrived
- 21:57Speaker 1: from the manufacturer and I clipped on my digital scale
- 21:59Speaker 1: and it was actually seventy three or seventy four pounds,
- 22:02Speaker 1: that's where that bow stayed. UM. Because a lot of
- 22:05Speaker 1: manufacturers will tell you that a bow will perform at
- 22:08Speaker 1: its absolute peak, at its peak draw weight. So that
- 22:12Speaker 1: that was something that I always had in the back
- 22:14Speaker 1: of my mind. But after years of testing and tinkering
- 22:16Speaker 1: withdraw weight and the advancements that have been made in
- 22:19Speaker 1: bow design um from the camps to the riser to
- 22:22Speaker 1: everything else, I mean, I can I can drop my bow.
- 22:26Speaker 1: I can drop my seventy pound bow down to right
- 22:28Speaker 1: at sixty or just north of sixty, and I can
- 22:31Speaker 1: go through my paper tuning, walk back tuning, broadhead tuning
- 22:34Speaker 1: process and I've noticed very little difference in terms of
- 22:37Speaker 1: how that well that boat performs. So as soon as
- 22:39Speaker 1: I got that out of my head um and and
- 22:42Speaker 1: just focused on taking care of myself and setting up
- 22:45Speaker 1: bows appropriately for for the animal I'm hunting for the
- 22:49Speaker 1: weather conditions that I'm gonna be finding myself, into the
- 22:52Speaker 1: clothing that I'm gonna be wearing, and realizing that putting
- 22:56Speaker 1: that arrow on the mark, putting that arrow in the
- 22:59Speaker 1: boiler room is the most important thing. And whether I'm
- 23:03Speaker 1: pulling seventy pounds, whether I'm pulling forty five pounds, it's
- 23:06Speaker 1: it's where you place that arrow yeah, that you know,
- 23:10Speaker 1: the idea that they perform optimally at you know, the
- 23:14Speaker 1: peak draw weight whatever that that you know, seventy or
- 23:17Speaker 1: whatever that you know. I get that message, and you
- 23:21Speaker 1: know they've said that to me a million times too.
- 23:24Speaker 1: But it's almost if that if that were really really
- 23:28Speaker 1: relevant to our infield accuracy, most bow hunters would probably
- 23:32Speaker 1: be better off getting a fifty to sixty and shooting
- 23:33Speaker 1: right at sixty. I would think, um, and no, no,
- 23:37Speaker 1: no question about it. And I don't know, I don't
- 23:40Speaker 1: know if you really remember this or not, if you
- 23:43Speaker 1: were in the bow hunting game when this was like big.
- 23:45Speaker 1: But I remember when I started, it was such a
- 23:48Speaker 1: manly thing to try to pull like eighty pounds, you know.
- 23:51Speaker 1: So when I was like fourteen and the dipshits that
- 23:53Speaker 1: I was around, you know, everybody was like striving to
- 23:56Speaker 1: pull as much pounded as possible. And now with what
- 23:59Speaker 1: we have at so silly. And I had a I
- 24:02Speaker 1: I asked you about those injuries because I had an
- 24:04Speaker 1: injury from with lifting weights in I think it was,
- 24:09Speaker 1: and I tore I partially tore a muscle on my
- 24:11Speaker 1: shoulder and in August and was like, like you like
- 24:16Speaker 1: oh what am I gonna do? And I ended up
- 24:19Speaker 1: ordering a bow and that was a fifty to sixty
- 24:21Speaker 1: and I think I shot fifty five pounds that year.
- 24:24Speaker 1: I what I did was laid off it for like
- 24:26Speaker 1: three weeks. My wife's a physical therapist and she's like, Okay, well,
- 24:28Speaker 1: I know you're gonna hunt, so here's how you do
- 24:31Speaker 1: this to like mitigate any more damage and maybe heal
- 24:34Speaker 1: up a little bit. And I did. I was terrified
- 24:38Speaker 1: because I did the least amount of shooting in the
- 24:40Speaker 1: preseason that I've ever done. But I still matched up
- 24:42Speaker 1: broadheads and did did that kind of stuff, and I
- 24:44Speaker 1: still felt like I'm going into the field like if
- 24:46Speaker 1: they get yards away, they're gonna be in trouble probably,
- 24:50Speaker 1: but like you have that nagging, that devil on your shoulders,
- 24:53Speaker 1: like you're gonna this is gonna be bad, dude. And
- 24:55Speaker 1: I'll never forget. I went out opening night in Wisconsin
- 24:58Speaker 1: because that was one of the years when Wisconsin and
- 25:00Speaker 1: Minesota had different openers. Wisconsin was week earlier. Usually they
- 25:02Speaker 1: fall on the same weekend. Opening night, I killed a buck,
- 25:05Speaker 1: came in and I was like, Okay, I got that
- 25:08Speaker 1: out of the way. Next week in Minnesota killed a
- 25:10Speaker 1: buck on opening day and I'm like, Okay, now I
- 25:12Speaker 1: feel like and I just I went on a tear
- 25:14Speaker 1: that year. Yeah, I feel like it was partially because
- 25:18Speaker 1: I was shooting a boat that was so so freaking comfortable,
- 25:21Speaker 1: That's right, And that's where I was going to with
- 25:23Speaker 1: with everything, especially when you were asking me with the
- 25:25Speaker 1: sheep boat. So from my sheep bow to my white
- 25:28Speaker 1: tail bow and anything else in between, whether I'm setting
- 25:31Speaker 1: up for turkeys or anything. Comfort for me is at
- 25:33Speaker 1: a premium. I want the most comfortable shooting experience that
- 25:37Speaker 1: I that I can design. And when I find comfort,
- 25:40Speaker 1: I usually find balance and I usually find accuracy. Um,
- 25:44Speaker 1: I worry. Eighty pound limbs mean zero to me. Um,
- 25:48Speaker 1: I'm not saying, guys, you know that if you want
- 25:50Speaker 1: to shoot eighty pounds, you know, and you feel comfortable
- 25:53Speaker 1: at eighty pounds, hey, hey, go for it. You know,
- 25:55Speaker 1: there's a lot of bow manufacturers making eighty pound eighty
- 25:57Speaker 1: pound limbs right now and models that were that are
- 26:00Speaker 1: designed for that. But you need to be honest with
- 26:04Speaker 1: yourself and find that build where you can be the
- 26:09Speaker 1: most lethal bow hunter you can be. And if at
- 26:12Speaker 1: any point you are struggling to get that string back
- 26:16Speaker 1: or it doesn't feel comfortable and you're really having to
- 26:18Speaker 1: strain and and and push that into the air and
- 26:21Speaker 1: the right it's not worth it. All you're gonna do
- 26:24Speaker 1: is you're gonna you know, you're gonna create injury for yourself.
- 26:27Speaker 1: You're not going to be as accurate as you want
- 26:29Speaker 1: to be, and you're gonna get very frustrated with how
- 26:31Speaker 1: you're shooting. Is going you're not gonna shoot as much,
- 26:34Speaker 1: You're not gonna shoot as often. And to do all
- 26:37Speaker 1: of that to say, well, yeah I shoot seventy or
- 26:39Speaker 1: eighty pounds that it's it's there's there's zero point in it.
- 26:42Speaker 1: There's zero point. And if you have to take care
- 26:44Speaker 1: of your body and accuracy, comfort, those things, those things
- 26:47Speaker 1: are what what are what going to get animals killed? Yeah?
- 26:51Speaker 1: I mean yeah, and you can shoot shoot whatever you want,
- 26:54Speaker 1: but just yeah, are you comfortable? Are you enjoying it?
- 26:57Speaker 1: And and understand you know, there's I talked about this
- 27:02Speaker 1: a lot, like in relation to dog training. Like people
- 27:04Speaker 1: think that they're going to train their you know, their
- 27:06Speaker 1: lab or their GSPL summer long, and then it's it's
- 27:09Speaker 1: you know it's a rock star on whatever triple blind
- 27:11Speaker 1: retrieves or tripod points, and then you get out there
- 27:13Speaker 1: in the field and there's a trophy and it might
- 27:16Speaker 1: be ten depending on the age of the dog and
- 27:19Speaker 1: the experience. You just know it's coming. And when you
- 27:22Speaker 1: think about standing out there shooting at whatever range, shooting
- 27:27Speaker 1: at your block target and laying them in there on
- 27:28Speaker 1: the bull's eyes, you just know you're probably not going
- 27:32Speaker 1: to shoot that well. When at In walks down the
- 27:35Speaker 1: trail after you've been grinding it out for eight days
- 27:37Speaker 1: of dark to dark sits like it's just a different world.
- 27:39Speaker 1: So you've got to give yourself that chance. And the
- 27:43Speaker 1: worst thing, you know, I know you've done this because
- 27:44Speaker 1: you've you've shot with a lot of people and you've
- 27:45Speaker 1: photographed a lot of people, is when they get you know,
- 27:49Speaker 1: you mentioned way earlier that those aggressive cams and a
- 27:51Speaker 1: bow that just is fighting to go off. When you
- 27:54Speaker 1: see people draw and then they have that slip moment
- 27:56Speaker 1: where they catch it, it's over like it's it takes
- 28:00Speaker 1: him right out of the game and that shot is
- 28:02Speaker 1: probably not going to be a good one. And that
- 28:04Speaker 1: happens when you drawn deer sometimes and it sucks. It
- 28:09Speaker 1: does suck, And i've i've, i've, I've done it in
- 28:11Speaker 1: the moment that you are at full draw and then
- 28:15Speaker 1: in you and that and that release hand comes forward
- 28:19Speaker 1: and you creep and then you go to pull back,
- 28:24Speaker 1: so too much can go bad. You're gonna punch. You
- 28:27Speaker 1: know you're gonna If you're shooting a hinge that arrows
- 28:30Speaker 1: ricocheting through the woods and carbon splattering everywhere. If you're
- 28:33Speaker 1: shooting an index finger, chances are you're gonna panic and
- 28:35Speaker 1: go ahead and just punch right through it because you've
- 28:37Speaker 1: already freaked yourself out because there was movement. If you're
- 28:40Speaker 1: shooting a thumb, the same thing is going to happen.
- 28:42Speaker 1: So you know, That's where we talked about, like being
- 28:45Speaker 1: being so comfortable in your routine and having a bow
- 28:49Speaker 1: that is so comfortable at full full draw when I
- 28:51Speaker 1: crawl into my anchor, I want to know that I
- 28:53Speaker 1: can hold that bow until exhaustion. I want to know
- 28:56Speaker 1: that when when my when I am at anchor and
- 28:58Speaker 1: I'm and I'm ready to shoot, I can hold that
- 29:01Speaker 1: bow until exhaustion and tell I physically can't hold anymore,
- 29:04Speaker 1: and I'm the one that makes the choice to let down.
- 29:06Speaker 1: I'm not gonna let the cams or the design of
- 29:09Speaker 1: that bow make that decision for me. Um And and
- 29:12Speaker 1: to your point, you know, it all changes again when
- 29:16Speaker 1: you when it's super cold outside and you're in lots
- 29:19Speaker 1: of clothing in the bucket a lifetimes coming down the
- 29:21Speaker 1: trail and you know you're you're standing there and your
- 29:23Speaker 1: legs are knocking in your cold. Everything, everything should revolve
- 29:28Speaker 1: around comfort at that point and being able to crawl
- 29:31Speaker 1: unto your anchor and know with absolute confidence that you
- 29:35Speaker 1: you have control. Ye. Well, I've noticed something I really
- 29:39Speaker 1: noticed this last year hunt in the late season, trying
- 29:41Speaker 1: to kill one more dough here in the cities. Is
- 29:45Speaker 1: you know you mentioned that, you know, hold the hold
- 29:46Speaker 1: the bow out and draw straight back to your faces
- 29:48Speaker 1: your test. You know, if you can do that nice
- 29:50Speaker 1: and slow, It's kind of like when you go to
- 29:51Speaker 1: the gym and you see somebody lifting weights. If they're
- 29:53Speaker 1: throwing their body everywhere, they're they're overcome. The people who
- 29:57Speaker 1: can do slow, deliberate movement or you know, mountain hunting,
- 30:00Speaker 1: slow deliberate uphill with a lot of weight on your back.
- 30:03Speaker 1: That's somebody who's strong and prepared. If you gotta if
- 30:06Speaker 1: you really got to fling your ship around, it's and
- 30:08Speaker 1: you're you're not as strong as you think. But that
- 30:11Speaker 1: that slow drawback. You know, people get so worried about
- 30:15Speaker 1: getting busted by white tails drawing, and because yeah, I mean,
- 30:19Speaker 1: it can break a lot of different ways. It's much
- 30:20Speaker 1: better to not get busted. But you know, in some
- 30:23Speaker 1: situations where they're gonna hear it, they're gonna see it,
- 30:26Speaker 1: something like it's gonna happen. But I've noticed even in
- 30:29Speaker 1: my life just that that nice, slow, straight, straight back
- 30:33Speaker 1: draw I get less. They're they're less fired up if
- 30:38Speaker 1: if they bust me. So you know, if you're doing
- 30:40Speaker 1: something you draw quickly surprise you or something, or you
- 30:42Speaker 1: have to sky that and get more movement, you're gonna
- 30:45Speaker 1: get busted worse. And all that's gonna do is take
- 30:47Speaker 1: away a little bit of your brain because you're gonna
- 30:49Speaker 1: go this suckers moving, he's gonna go. And if they
- 30:52Speaker 1: you know, they're the One thing that I realized that
- 30:57Speaker 1: happens all the time to me that I kind of
- 30:59Speaker 1: have learned to mostly ignore is that there's a lot
- 31:02Speaker 1: of times I'm gonna get busted drawing. You know, when
- 31:04Speaker 1: I'm when I'm hunting in northern Wisconsin, those dear bust
- 31:06Speaker 1: me every single freaking time. But you can still kill them.
- 31:09Speaker 1: And it's it depends how bad they bust you, and
- 31:12Speaker 1: you just you kind of learned to live with it.
- 31:13Speaker 1: But you can mitigate some of the some of the
- 31:16Speaker 1: bad bus by being able to draw your bowl better.
- 31:20Speaker 1: And and that's that's exactly the case. And a good
- 31:22Speaker 1: example of that for me happened last year here in Colorado,
- 31:24Speaker 1: was hunting a piece of public dirt. Um it was.
- 31:27Speaker 1: It was later in November. I had been really sick.
- 31:30Speaker 1: Um I got I got the the COVID bug, and
- 31:32Speaker 1: I was really sick. And coming off of it. It
- 31:34Speaker 1: was my first evening back into a into a tree stand,
- 31:36Speaker 1: and and I was I was weaker than normal and
- 31:39Speaker 1: and and it probably wasn't as mentally laser focused as
- 31:41Speaker 1: I normally would be. But when I got up in
- 31:44Speaker 1: my stand, you know, later that evening, I had a buck.
- 31:46Speaker 1: I had a buck come through, and I made the
- 31:49Speaker 1: decision right away that you know, I was gonna I
- 31:50Speaker 1: was gonna go ahead and shoot that buck. And just
- 31:53Speaker 1: the way that I had to position my stand in
- 31:55Speaker 1: that gnarled, horrible cotton wood that is so common out west.
- 31:58Speaker 1: I mean, you just don't get the straight hardwoods. And
- 32:01Speaker 1: I wasn't as high as I'd like to to have been,
- 32:03Speaker 1: but that was my option. And when I went to
- 32:05Speaker 1: draw on that buck, it was cold, um, the wind
- 32:09Speaker 1: was blowing, and I was still able to bring that
- 32:12Speaker 1: string straight back, and that buck did bust me. But
- 32:16Speaker 1: I could just tell by the way he fixed his
- 32:19Speaker 1: gaze up there it was not a bus like, holy crap,
- 32:22Speaker 1: So my my internal thinking didn't shift too Oh what
- 32:27Speaker 1: do I need to do now he's bust me? Is
- 32:28Speaker 1: he gonna run? Is he gonna leave? He's gonna world?
- 32:30Speaker 1: Do I need to let one rip? My my concentration
- 32:33Speaker 1: was able to stay totally focused on where my pin was,
- 32:36Speaker 1: sitting on him, letting him relax, and then going ahead
- 32:39Speaker 1: and executing the shot, and and within seconds he just
- 32:42Speaker 1: paid it no mind. But I didn't create a bunch
- 32:45Speaker 1: of additional movement, and I would because I didn't create
- 32:48Speaker 1: that additional movement, he wasn't on alert, and because I
- 32:51Speaker 1: knew he wasn't on super alert, my brain didn't go
- 32:54Speaker 1: into the oh crap mode. I just stayed true to
- 32:56Speaker 1: everything that I was doing and that resulted in a
- 32:59Speaker 1: perfect arrow. Yeah. I mean, that's one thing that you
- 33:02Speaker 1: really get when you when you have enough experiences, you
- 33:05Speaker 1: you understand how how much worse it gets due to
- 33:11Speaker 1: the level of bust and like the level of of
- 33:15Speaker 1: panic that's that's associated with how likely it looks they're
- 33:19Speaker 1: gonna leave your life. Like the more that you can minimize,
- 33:24Speaker 1: you know, the feeling that these suckers are gone or
- 33:29Speaker 1: this this dude's gonna to bail on me quick here,
- 33:32Speaker 1: the better you'll do. And it's a hard I mean,
- 33:35Speaker 1: I don't that's one of this is one of those
- 33:37Speaker 1: things like telling people how to fight fish like I could.
- 33:40Speaker 1: I could write an entire book on how to fight
- 33:42Speaker 1: small mouth and it wouldn't do anyone any good. Like
- 33:45Speaker 1: they have to just go do it, and like you
- 33:46Speaker 1: have to get into these situations and see and lose
- 33:49Speaker 1: some of those deer and panic and miss and and
- 33:52Speaker 1: this this stuff is just gonna happen and eventually kind
- 33:54Speaker 1: of come to a place where like, Okay, I know
- 33:56Speaker 1: how this is gonna go. And then when it shifts gears,
- 33:58Speaker 1: they're like okay, now I know how there's a really
- 34:00Speaker 1: gonna go And it's just it's one of those things
- 34:02Speaker 1: that's so important that just doesn't get talked about much.
- 34:05Speaker 1: I don't think no, and it really doesn't. And I
- 34:08Speaker 1: think it's something that definitely needs to be talked about
- 34:10Speaker 1: more and and considered more. Because when you go into
- 34:13Speaker 1: the white Tail woods with a bow that is comfortable
- 34:15Speaker 1: for you, that fills you with confidence, and that is
- 34:18Speaker 1: set up properly, your success rate is going to go
- 34:22Speaker 1: up because you're going to make you're going to execute
- 34:25Speaker 1: better in crunch time. You're absolutely going to execute better
- 34:28Speaker 1: in crunch time. Um. You know. So when I'm looking
- 34:30Speaker 1: at a white tail bow in my bow build, I'm
- 34:32Speaker 1: seeking a bow with a non aggressive cam system. In
- 34:35Speaker 1: terms of those cams just simply designed to to for
- 34:39Speaker 1: for maximum speed right um, where they're just really itching
- 34:43Speaker 1: to go. I want to make sure that, um, those
- 34:45Speaker 1: cams are very comfortable, that the bow feels comfortable, that
- 34:48Speaker 1: the draw is smooth. When you get an overly aggressive
- 34:51Speaker 1: cam system, a lot of times you won't have that
- 34:54Speaker 1: smooth transition to let off. There may be a little
- 34:57Speaker 1: herky jerky motion in there, and sometimes that herky jerk
- 35:00Speaker 1: emotion can be enough to create that creep we talked
- 35:02Speaker 1: about earlier. You might just you know, when it goes
- 35:04Speaker 1: back and you hit hit your back wall, especially if
- 35:08Speaker 1: that pack wall is a limb stop um and you're
- 35:10Speaker 1: not pulling into the cable. When you hit the limbs
- 35:12Speaker 1: and it's rock hard and it happens that quick and
- 35:15Speaker 1: you're pulling with that much torque, there's there's just so
- 35:19Speaker 1: much that can go wrong. Yeah, well, and we should
- 35:21Speaker 1: say too. You know, I know you've You've set up
- 35:26Speaker 1: a ton of bows. I've set up a ton of bows.
- 35:28Speaker 1: We've been really lucky in the bow hunting industry that way.
- 35:31Speaker 1: And what you realize if you get five or six
- 35:34Speaker 1: bows a year and you set them up and shoot
- 35:35Speaker 1: him and hunt with them, you realize that, you know,
- 35:38Speaker 1: there's nothing wrong with brand loyalty, right like you you
- 35:41Speaker 1: might be a white fan of Matthews fan whatever, I
- 35:43Speaker 1: don't I don't care, but no, nothing, not no bow
- 35:46Speaker 1: company is producing the same thing year to year. And
- 35:50Speaker 1: so even if they have a reputation for being a
- 35:52Speaker 1: killer white tail bow or a killer Western bow or something,
- 35:55Speaker 1: you really got to shoot them because it's that's one
- 35:57Speaker 1: thing that always amazed me how different you know, a
- 36:00Speaker 1: bow model from one manufacturer would be from you know,
- 36:03Speaker 1: the flagship from one year to the next, and how
- 36:05Speaker 1: much I might like or dislike it, or how one
- 36:07Speaker 1: company who I'm like, I've every time I shoot the bows,
- 36:10Speaker 1: I don't really like it, and then I'll shoot one
- 36:11Speaker 1: and I'll be like, I really like this one. There's
- 36:15Speaker 1: a there's a lot to it, and it's it is
- 36:17Speaker 1: really a matter of getting into a pro shop and
- 36:20Speaker 1: and spending some time with them and being serious about it.
- 36:23Speaker 1: Because when you get that one that that works for you,
- 36:26Speaker 1: it's really nice, like you said, and when they're set up, well,
- 36:29Speaker 1: you know there's something that goes on there. We've been
- 36:31Speaker 1: dealing with this and on the dog side of things
- 36:33Speaker 1: a lot with with these pandemic pups. You know, everybody
- 36:36Speaker 1: getting a puppy last year or adopting dogs and then
- 36:39Speaker 1: not getting them socialized very well because we were in
- 36:42Speaker 1: a lockdown, and you know, you weren't. You weren't out
- 36:44Speaker 1: and about with people in in new situations. So we
- 36:47Speaker 1: have a lot of dogs that are like a year
- 36:48Speaker 1: old now that have a lot of problems. And what
- 36:51Speaker 1: happens is if you don't socialize them right away. When
- 36:53Speaker 1: they're eight weeks old, ten weeks old, they're they're not
- 36:56Speaker 1: as much fun to be around, and so you tend
- 36:58Speaker 1: to keep them home more and exact abate that problem.
- 37:01Speaker 1: If you've got a bowl that's not very accurate, not
- 37:04Speaker 1: shooting very well, or you don't like shooting it, you're
- 37:06Speaker 1: gonna shoot less and that's gonna hurt you. You are.
- 37:08Speaker 1: And on the other side of things, if you get
- 37:10Speaker 1: one that you really enjoy shooting and it's fun and
- 37:12Speaker 1: you can you can lay them in there, you're gonna
- 37:15Speaker 1: shoot more. You are. And the thing is is what
- 37:19Speaker 1: you said. I tell guys this all the time is
- 37:22Speaker 1: pro shops are there for a reason. Um, whether you
- 37:24Speaker 1: like to set up your own bow. I set up
- 37:26Speaker 1: all my own bows from from start to finish, top
- 37:29Speaker 1: to bottom. But um shoot getting to shoot, whether you're
- 37:35Speaker 1: loyal to whatever manufacturer. Manufacturers have done a great job
- 37:38Speaker 1: of building different flagship bows or different budget bows. You
- 37:41Speaker 1: have a whole line. And if you get into that
- 37:43Speaker 1: pro shop, and that pro shop is worth its salt,
- 37:46Speaker 1: they're gonna let you shoot just a ton of different bows,
- 37:50Speaker 1: and you're going to start shooting them, and you're gonna
- 37:53Speaker 1: find one or two that you're like, Oh my gosh.
- 37:55Speaker 1: From start to finish, that was silky smooth. From start
- 37:58Speaker 1: to finish. It just felt right. The grip fell into
- 38:01Speaker 1: the palm swell area. I crawled into my anchor perfectly.
- 38:04Speaker 1: The shot broke just the way I should The arrow
- 38:06Speaker 1: was right where I wanted it to be. Um, the
- 38:08Speaker 1: draw cycle was smooth. You're gonna find that bow. Um.
- 38:12Speaker 1: But if you just go you know, read inc on
- 38:15Speaker 1: a website or a magazine article or anything like that
- 38:19Speaker 1: and go, oh, yeah, that's the boat, that's the boat
- 38:21Speaker 1: for me. I want that bow, and you go in
- 38:23Speaker 1: and your heart is set and you're dead set on
- 38:25Speaker 1: that boat, right, Um, you're not making the best informed
- 38:31Speaker 1: buying decision that you possibly can. I mean, I think
- 38:33Speaker 1: about it. Last week. I told you I went and
- 38:35Speaker 1: got a new truck, and I didn't buy the first
- 38:38Speaker 1: truck that I drove. I had my mindset. I wanted
- 38:41Speaker 1: to dodge Diesel since I was since I was a kid,
- 38:44Speaker 1: and besides the fact that they're a bazillion dollars. Um.
- 38:48Speaker 1: I I drove two of them, and I tried to
- 38:51Speaker 1: force myself to like them. I tried to force myself
- 38:54Speaker 1: to ignore the noise that I heard and the rough ride,
- 38:57Speaker 1: and then I went back to the Chevy dealer and
- 38:59Speaker 1: I Tom the GMC and I went for a cruise,
- 39:02Speaker 1: and I'm like, this is it, and it's the same thing.
- 39:06Speaker 1: Don't fight it. If you're in a pro shop and
- 39:08Speaker 1: you had your mind set on this bow and you
- 39:10Speaker 1: said I'm getting this particular bow. When I go in
- 39:13Speaker 1: there and you shoot that bow and it does not
- 39:15Speaker 1: feel like the boat is for you, then that is
- 39:18Speaker 1: not the boat for you, And don't fight that decision.
- 39:21Speaker 1: Just say, hey, okay, I tried it. I'd like to
- 39:23Speaker 1: try this model from this same manufacturer. That's fine. I
- 39:26Speaker 1: want to try this model because the more you do that,
- 39:28Speaker 1: the more you up your odds of finding the one
- 39:31Speaker 1: that gives you the perfect test drive from top to bottom. So,
- 39:47Speaker 1: speaking of contentious topics, you're still you're still a believer
- 39:52Speaker 1: in stabilizers, huh, even in the white Tail Woods. I
- 39:59Speaker 1: am a believer in a state babilizer. And there's multiple
- 40:01Speaker 1: reasons for being a believer in a stabilizer. Okay, So
- 40:05Speaker 1: I know everybody's gonna say, yeah, shoot, I said earlier
- 40:07Speaker 1: shooting to twenty to forty yards, right shooting from twenty
- 40:11Speaker 1: to forty yards, which is most white tail shots is
- 40:14Speaker 1: that I've experienced, are gonna between twenty and forty. My
- 40:17Speaker 1: western shots can be a little bit longer where balance
- 40:20Speaker 1: comes at more of a premium in terms of where
- 40:23Speaker 1: a stabilizer with an offset um, experimenting with different weights
- 40:26Speaker 1: on the front end and and the back end of
- 40:28Speaker 1: those bars um is maybe a little bit more important.
- 40:32Speaker 1: But a stabilizer, I always tell people, if you're gonna
- 40:37Speaker 1: put a five inch stabilize rubber stabilizer on your bow
- 40:40Speaker 1: that wiggles when you can bend it and wrap it
- 40:42Speaker 1: around your riser um, that is not a stabilizer. Okay,
- 40:45Speaker 1: that that's piece of that stabilizers doing one thing. It's
- 40:49Speaker 1: it's a noise and vibration device. It is not a stabilizer.
- 40:53Speaker 1: A stabilizer is meant to it's in the world. It's
- 40:56Speaker 1: meant to stabilize you. And so when I put a
- 40:59Speaker 1: stag bilizer in my bow and I spend time tinkering
- 41:03Speaker 1: with weights, you want to pick a stabilizer with a
- 41:05Speaker 1: good system that allows you to to to take weight
- 41:08Speaker 1: on and off of that stabilizer, because you're going to
- 41:11Speaker 1: find a point where when you pull back at full draw,
- 41:14Speaker 1: that bow sits like a well trained retriever. That bow
- 41:18Speaker 1: just sits there and it will hold better on target um.
- 41:23Speaker 1: When you don't have that stabilizer, you have weight out front.
- 41:27Speaker 1: You've got your site. A lot of white tail guys,
- 41:29Speaker 1: I mean myself included, I shoot a dovetail site. I
- 41:32Speaker 1: my sites out front. You have weight out in front
- 41:34Speaker 1: of your riser, and so that stabilizer helps with that
- 41:38Speaker 1: a lot. And now you won't know it unless you
- 41:42Speaker 1: try it. You won't know the full benefit of a
- 41:45Speaker 1: good stabilizer system unless you try it. As far as
- 41:49Speaker 1: noise and vibration, you don't need a stabilizer. These bows
- 41:52Speaker 1: are too quiet. Don't don't if you don't want one
- 41:55Speaker 1: and it doesn't feel comfortable to you again going back
- 41:57Speaker 1: to comfort, that's fine. You you don't have to run
- 41:59Speaker 1: a state bilizer. I'd rather see a guy not run
- 42:02Speaker 1: a stabilizer than put a four inch or five inch
- 42:04Speaker 1: stabilizer on the front of his bow that was built
- 42:06Speaker 1: for no other purpose, because you don't need the noise
- 42:08Speaker 1: vibration if you're shooting a good set up your arrow
- 42:10Speaker 1: is heavy enough those types of things, that arrow is
- 42:13Speaker 1: going to absorb the energy. You're not going to get
- 42:14Speaker 1: the noise in vibration. But to be as accurate as
- 42:18Speaker 1: you possibly can be, which I believe is essential from
- 42:21Speaker 1: the Western woods to to the white tail woods. A stabilizer,
- 42:25Speaker 1: A stabilizer system. And I say system, and that doesn't
- 42:28Speaker 1: mean you have to run a backbar. It doesn't mean
- 42:30Speaker 1: you have to run any of that stuff. But a
- 42:33Speaker 1: system that you are confident in that will that will
- 42:36Speaker 1: produce for you and give you added confidence and balance
- 42:39Speaker 1: that bow and allow you to hold a steadier and
- 42:43Speaker 1: let that bow aim. You're You're you're gonna up your
- 42:47Speaker 1: odds of success. In my opinion, you should have seen.
- 42:51Speaker 1: So where this comes from is I've just gotten to
- 42:55Speaker 1: the point where white to hunting. I don't have a
- 42:57Speaker 1: stabilizer on my boa rising freaking polls every time I
- 43:01Speaker 1: see a picture. It drives a lot of people nuts.
- 43:04Speaker 1: And I brought it up to Mark when we were
- 43:07Speaker 1: out in Montana recently filming some YouTube stuff, and I
- 43:11Speaker 1: was I kind of like jokingly like said, oh, you
- 43:13Speaker 1: gotta gotta stabilizer on your way. Tobebo and he the
- 43:15Speaker 1: way he looked at me. He's like, well yeah, and
- 43:18Speaker 1: he's like, you don't use a stabilizer. I was like no,
- 43:20Speaker 1: and he just looked at me like I was the
- 43:22Speaker 1: worst ever. Yep. Well here's here's the thing though. I mean,
- 43:28Speaker 1: you're confident in it, right, So again everything goes back
- 43:31Speaker 1: to confidence. So if you're if you're if you're not
- 43:34Speaker 1: happy with the stabilizer on your bow, if you feel
- 43:36Speaker 1: like it's adding too much weight. You know, a lot
- 43:38Speaker 1: of guys are really concerned about weight. Um. I like
- 43:41Speaker 1: a heavier bow for me, The heavier the better. When
- 43:43Speaker 1: I'm done with it, a heavier bow means a steadier
- 43:46Speaker 1: hold for me from from from east to west, it
- 43:48Speaker 1: doesn't matter. Heavier bow equals a steadier hold. Um. But
- 43:52Speaker 1: if you just don't like the feel, so much of
- 43:55Speaker 1: archery is feel, and if you don't like that feel,
- 43:58Speaker 1: then you can take that stabilizer often experiment with it,
- 44:01Speaker 1: because like I said, it's it's not doing you any
- 44:03Speaker 1: purpose if it's not being used as a stabilization device.
- 44:06Speaker 1: If you just have it on there to cancel noise
- 44:07Speaker 1: and vibration, just get it off of there, because you're
- 44:09Speaker 1: just adding a necessary weight in terms of if weight
- 44:13Speaker 1: is an issue for you as far as feel yeah, well,
- 44:16Speaker 1: and I should say, you know, I went through a
- 44:19Speaker 1: long period of my life where I shot a lot,
- 44:21Speaker 1: especially before we had the girls. I shot a lot
- 44:23Speaker 1: of long range stuff, and I realized, you know, shooting
- 44:27Speaker 1: in the wind and shooting you know, just different conditions.
- 44:31Speaker 1: I was like, I know, there's times where I knew
- 44:37Speaker 1: a stabilizer was helping me. If I was stretching out
- 44:39Speaker 1: beyond forty yards, I knew it. I could tell. And
- 44:41Speaker 1: you know, the same thing with certain kind of releases,
- 44:44Speaker 1: and same thing with a certain amount of wind. You know,
- 44:46Speaker 1: wind really started to affect me forty and beyond. And
- 44:50Speaker 1: so as I kind of got out of that stage
- 44:54Speaker 1: and couldn't shoot as much because I had little kids
- 44:56Speaker 1: and just more stuff to do, my my range kept
- 45:00Speaker 1: creeping in, creeping in, and I'm like, you know, I'm
- 45:02Speaker 1: a forty and undershooter now, and I just couldn't find
- 45:05Speaker 1: enough difference to justify the kind of stabilizer I knew
- 45:09Speaker 1: I would actually need to help me shoot better. And
- 45:11Speaker 1: so it was kind of like, you know, if I'm
- 45:13Speaker 1: shooting white tails at twenty yards and my bow is quiet.
- 45:15Speaker 1: I'm like, I don't need this, and I know people
- 45:18Speaker 1: all people all the time, they roll their eyes. I'm like,
- 45:21Speaker 1: I don't know, it just works for me. Okay, So
- 45:23Speaker 1: but the the the this question has to come into
- 45:26Speaker 1: play too. How many white tail guys. I mean, I
- 45:28Speaker 1: saw more hunters out west last year than I've ever seen. More.
- 45:31Speaker 1: Hunters are expanding their adventures right They're coming west in
- 45:34Speaker 1: search of mule, deer, pronghorn, elk, everything like that. And
- 45:37Speaker 1: they don't want to set up multiple bows, but they
- 45:39Speaker 1: they you know, they just want one solid bow. And
- 45:43Speaker 1: when you start tinkering and changing things in terms of
- 45:46Speaker 1: weight on your bow, it changes an entire feel. So
- 45:51Speaker 1: for someone like you when you come here to hunt antelope,
- 45:54Speaker 1: I've noticed you don't have a stabilized and I've remembered
- 45:59Speaker 1: a few yards of you shots past forty that maybe
- 46:02Speaker 1: didn't go as quite as planned. Is that possible? Is
- 46:05Speaker 1: that would be fair? When I fair? To be fair,
- 46:08Speaker 1: I've been told that it was going to be a
- 46:10Speaker 1: slam dunk out of a blind at close range. I
- 46:12Speaker 1: knew that was coming, I said, walked right into it. Yes,
- 46:15Speaker 1: But chaos, chaos and sues on the prairies as you know,
- 46:19Speaker 1: with transla hawks and thorns and scorpions and rattlesnakes, So
- 46:23Speaker 1: you should expect and just knowing me that I'm an idiot,
- 46:25Speaker 1: that we're probably going to be slipping around the cactus
- 46:27Speaker 1: trying to slip an arrow into a prong horn and
- 46:29Speaker 1: the SHOT's going to be beyond forty. So guys, need
- 46:33Speaker 1: you're right. And I will say that I do. I
- 46:35Speaker 1: drew in any deer tag in North Dakota this year,
- 46:37Speaker 1: and I do have a stabilizer on my boat. Okay,
- 46:41Speaker 1: so you now have a stabilizer on your boat. So
- 46:43Speaker 1: my question to you is how long is that stabilizer
- 46:44Speaker 1: on your boa? It's long enough and it's no enough. Yeah,
- 46:47Speaker 1: you'll be very you'll be very pleased when you see
- 46:50Speaker 1: my California whether two and a half year old uh
- 46:54Speaker 1: mule deer. You're gonna be like, yes, okay, are you
- 46:57Speaker 1: running a backbar system with an offset or anything like
- 47:00Speaker 1: that or you just running a straight front stabilizer, just
- 47:02Speaker 1: a straight front perfect yea. And again that's that's that's
- 47:07Speaker 1: why manufacturers make these different types of stabilizers um so
- 47:12Speaker 1: that you can play with those different types of stabilizers.
- 47:14Speaker 1: And you know, I feel like I'm probably beating a
- 47:16Speaker 1: dead horse here, But it all goes back to comfort
- 47:19Speaker 1: and what you feel most comfortable with. And if you
- 47:21Speaker 1: take your time and play with different settings with your bow,
- 47:24Speaker 1: whether that's moving your site closer in towards the riser
- 47:27Speaker 1: or moving your site out um on the riser, whether
- 47:31Speaker 1: it's you know, take shooting with your quiver on or
- 47:34Speaker 1: shooting with your quiver off, or finding a quiver that
- 47:36Speaker 1: hugs the riser tightly. Everything you do, you should have
- 47:39Speaker 1: a purpose for doing. And the more you spend, more
- 47:42Speaker 1: time you spend testing and tinkering and and and looking
- 47:45Speaker 1: at these types of things, the more confident you're gonna
- 47:47Speaker 1: be in your final bow build. And when you're confident
- 47:50Speaker 1: your final bow build, you're gonna be a confident archer. Yeah. Um,
- 47:55Speaker 1: should we talk should we talk arrows a little bit? Maybe?
- 47:58Speaker 1: What is your what are your white tailed arrow way
- 48:00Speaker 1: in it? My white tail arrows right now? So so
- 48:03Speaker 1: my white tail arrows weigh and right at about four
- 48:06Speaker 1: five grains their eastern five millimeter um full metal jacket. Um.
- 48:12Speaker 1: I love the I love the aluminum for reduced friction
- 48:15Speaker 1: passed throughs and they hit like a ton of bricks. U.
- 48:18Speaker 1: My kinetic energy rating is right where I wanted to be.
- 48:20Speaker 1: They have a good foc as far as front of
- 48:23Speaker 1: center that I've taken the time to set up. Um.
- 48:26Speaker 1: And so my white tail arrow is is actually heavier
- 48:31Speaker 1: UM than my western arrow um. And I have reasons
- 48:34Speaker 1: for that. And people will object and and and but
- 48:37Speaker 1: that's what makes archery fun is is you can spend.
- 48:39Speaker 1: You can spend things I want um. But again, it
- 48:42Speaker 1: all goes back to what I've had the most success
- 48:43Speaker 1: with and what I believe to be true. So my
- 48:47Speaker 1: white You're concerned their trajectory, well, I mean, for me,
- 48:51Speaker 1: a heavier arrows quieter. I'm a firm believer that I
- 48:54Speaker 1: don't think these white tails. I don't think these deer
- 48:56Speaker 1: hearing the bow go off um. And a lot of
- 48:58Speaker 1: guys will say that is lately wrong, and it might
- 49:00Speaker 1: be completely wrong. They there are some bows that got
- 49:03Speaker 1: but I think they hear the arrow, That is my opinion.
- 49:06Speaker 1: I think that they are hearing and reacting to the
- 49:08Speaker 1: arrow and flight, and a heavier arrow is going to
- 49:11Speaker 1: be quieter in flight. I mean it's I've I've proven
- 49:13Speaker 1: it to myself with high definition microphones. So I like
- 49:17Speaker 1: a heavier arrow in terms, you know, for for white tail.
- 49:21Speaker 1: And because I'm shooting usually between twenty and forty yards,
- 49:25Speaker 1: I'm not that concerned with things like drop. Um. I'm
- 49:29Speaker 1: I'm usually shooting in in in a confined space with
- 49:32Speaker 1: a lot of trees and things like that, so I'm
- 49:34Speaker 1: not concerned as concerned about Uh, There's just a lot
- 49:38Speaker 1: of things that go into it. A heavy arrow will
- 49:39Speaker 1: will reduce wind buck and things like that. But a
- 49:43Speaker 1: heavy arrow for me just is perfect for white tails.
- 49:46Speaker 1: I like to be right around that four seventy mark
- 49:50Speaker 1: to be honest. But I mean, isn't it you know,
- 49:52Speaker 1: saying that they don't hear the bogo off. You know
- 49:55Speaker 1: that they hear the bogo off sometimes, but sometimes they
- 49:58Speaker 1: that heavier arrow. You know, the noise of a bow
- 50:02Speaker 1: going off is vibration going somewhere not into your arrow,
- 50:05Speaker 1: And the heavier the arrow, the more vibrations going in there.
- 50:07Speaker 1: So it's all tied together. But I think I don't
- 50:12Speaker 1: entirely disagree with that. I do wonder, especially like I
- 50:17Speaker 1: think that broadhead choice has a huge impact on the
- 50:21Speaker 1: sound of an arrow, and I know, you've I know,
- 50:23Speaker 1: you've stood next to people who shoot like vented broadheads,
- 50:27Speaker 1: and so I think I think cutting down every bit
- 50:30Speaker 1: of noise everywhere is a solid choice. Yeah, And I
- 50:34Speaker 1: don't want to overlook bo noise because, like I said, bose,
- 50:36Speaker 1: I mean that is that is something Some bows produce
- 50:39Speaker 1: more noise than others others. I just like to make
- 50:42Speaker 1: sure that from top to bottom again, that my my
- 50:44Speaker 1: setup is as quiet as possible. And when you get
- 50:47Speaker 1: a really lightweight arrow that's sizzling and you get um,
- 50:51Speaker 1: you know, a vented uh fixed blade on the front
- 50:54Speaker 1: end of that, you're you're going to create You're going
- 50:57Speaker 1: to create more noise. I mean, you just are that
- 51:00Speaker 1: arrow is going to be louder in flights. I mean
- 51:02Speaker 1: if you stand at a you know, safe place down
- 51:07Speaker 1: range where there's a wall or something like that. I've
- 51:09Speaker 1: been in pro shops where you know, you're separated from
- 51:12Speaker 1: the counter by just one you know wall that you
- 51:15Speaker 1: can hear through very easily, and guys are in there
- 51:17Speaker 1: testing broadheads and stuff like that, and you'll hear an
- 51:20Speaker 1: arrow go and you'd be like, oh my gosh, wow,
- 51:22Speaker 1: that was extremely loud. And then you know me being me,
- 51:25Speaker 1: I've got to go in there and see, like what's
- 51:27Speaker 1: going on. And nine times out of ten it's a
- 51:29Speaker 1: guy shooting a flamethrower with an ultra light arrow with
- 51:32Speaker 1: a minimum g p I rating for grains per inch
- 51:34Speaker 1: four that will work for that boast safely, and shooting
- 51:38Speaker 1: a large fixed plate broadhead with vined blades um and
- 51:42Speaker 1: then those types of things are just going to amplify
- 51:45Speaker 1: the amount of noise that is created. Yeah, well yeah,
- 51:49Speaker 1: And if you think about it, this kind of goes
- 51:51Speaker 1: back to our comfort and drawing situation. You know, when
- 51:54Speaker 1: when a buck walks in, you might have three mistakes.
- 51:57Speaker 1: You can make little sound mistakes, and the first one
- 52:00Speaker 1: might be here and you draw. The second one might
- 52:04Speaker 1: be if if you get three, the second one might
- 52:06Speaker 1: be that bow going off, and the third one might
- 52:08Speaker 1: be that arrow coming at and things start to fall apart.
- 52:11Speaker 1: If you get three, you might only get to You
- 52:12Speaker 1: might only get one. And so addressing all that stuff
- 52:16Speaker 1: is important. And man, I know you know this because
- 52:18Speaker 1: you photographed people shooting a lot and you've been around
- 52:20Speaker 1: him a lot. I was just blown away, not only
- 52:24Speaker 1: by some of the vented broadheads that you're talking about
- 52:26Speaker 1: how loud they are. I mean it's like a loud whistle.
- 52:29Speaker 1: But also just the differences in bows sometimes and you know,
- 52:33Speaker 1: back when people you don't see this a lot anymore,
- 52:36Speaker 1: but people still do it once in a while. That
- 52:37Speaker 1: the rubber a liner for a peep site. Yeah, you
- 52:40Speaker 1: stand next to that, Holy cow, it's so loud. Yeah,
- 52:44Speaker 1: it's very loud. Yeah. And so there's something too having
- 52:49Speaker 1: somebody stand next to you and shoot. That's important. Yep,
- 52:54Speaker 1: it's very important. And another thing I would recommend to
- 52:56Speaker 1: is if your bow sounds loud to you when when
- 52:58Speaker 1: it when you shoot, it probably is um. And you know,
- 53:02Speaker 1: if you want to set up just take a standard
- 53:04Speaker 1: video camera, set it up. If you're shooting at thirty yards,
- 53:07Speaker 1: set that video camera up at fifteen and make sure
- 53:10Speaker 1: everything is really quiet. Pick a real you know, a
- 53:12Speaker 1: day where the wind is nothing and it's really calm,
- 53:14Speaker 1: so you don't get anything else, and shoot some different
- 53:16Speaker 1: arrow combinations and then go back and play them and
- 53:19Speaker 1: you will hear. You will hear a significant difference. Another
- 53:24Speaker 1: great way to do it is you know, standing it
- 53:26Speaker 1: as safe. And when I say safe, I mean I
- 53:28Speaker 1: always want something between me and that arrow, UM as
- 53:31Speaker 1: far as a wall or some some something like that. UM,
- 53:34Speaker 1: don't ever put yourself in harm's away. But you can
- 53:36Speaker 1: get and listen to a buddy's arrow, or have them
- 53:39Speaker 1: listen to your arrow as it's passing, and they'll you know,
- 53:41Speaker 1: many times I've come out and been like, man, whatever
- 53:43Speaker 1: you just shot is what you need to go with um,
- 53:46Speaker 1: or come out and said, wow, what was that? You know,
- 53:48Speaker 1: and then you start looking at the build of that arrow,
- 53:51Speaker 1: in the build of that bow, and then if the
- 53:53Speaker 1: answer becomes very clear of why that was so loud, Yeah, Well,
- 53:56Speaker 1: and we should say this too, you know, like you
- 53:57Speaker 1: mentioned this before. Yeah, obviously most people listening to this
- 54:01Speaker 1: are gonna have one bowl, right, so get the right one.
- 54:04Speaker 1: And obviously people listening to this aren't gonna have multiple
- 54:08Speaker 1: multiple errow options. So just as like a sort of
- 54:12Speaker 1: as a guideline to all of this stuff we're talking about,
- 54:16Speaker 1: at least personally me and I know you do this too.
- 54:19Speaker 1: I just always go heavier. I air on the side
- 54:22Speaker 1: of heavier. And and you've you mentioned this earlier about
- 54:25Speaker 1: you know, I forget about speed. Who cares? And you know,
- 54:29Speaker 1: up up the you know, go get on the right
- 54:32Speaker 1: side of spine first, you know, make sure you're make
- 54:34Speaker 1: sure you're working with that, and make sure you're working
- 54:37Speaker 1: with something that that weighs a little bit more, and
- 54:39Speaker 1: you forget about that chronograph, forget about how if if
- 54:42Speaker 1: you're worried about aero speed, just lie, Just tell people
- 54:44Speaker 1: you're shooting three forty and it's awesome. Nobody cares. But
- 54:47Speaker 1: but air on the side of heavier, you're gonna get
- 54:49Speaker 1: You're gonna you know, you'll get better penetration, you'll get
- 54:52Speaker 1: a quieter bow. The whole the whole thing just works
- 54:55Speaker 1: out generally better. Yep, from top to bottom. And in
- 54:59Speaker 1: one thing I wanted to touch on two that we
- 55:01Speaker 1: we we kind of we we kind of touched on it,
- 55:03Speaker 1: but we tiptoed around a little bit too. Is for
- 55:05Speaker 1: those guys setting up one bow, you know, going back
- 55:07Speaker 1: to comfort being at a premium, especially with the cam
- 55:10Speaker 1: system and the overall build of the bow. Um, how
- 55:13Speaker 1: many times have you held on a white tail and
- 55:15Speaker 1: held on a white tail and held on a white
- 55:17Speaker 1: tail a lot? Right? Um, I've held on elk until
- 55:22Speaker 1: I when the boat went off. I honest to God,
- 55:24Speaker 1: don't know how how I hit him because I had
- 55:27Speaker 1: held so long. And you need to be able to
- 55:30Speaker 1: do that. Um, you need to be able to hold
- 55:33Speaker 1: that full draw. And one of the things you need
- 55:35Speaker 1: to practice is doing that. Go outside when you in,
- 55:39Speaker 1: you know, pick a shooting day, pick a shooting session.
- 55:41Speaker 1: I always give myself goals when I go out to shoot,
- 55:44Speaker 1: but make your goal for that day to hold. Have
- 55:46Speaker 1: somebody stand there, start a timer on a stopwatcher, a
- 55:49Speaker 1: cell phone, and you hold that bow until you cannot
- 55:54Speaker 1: hold it anymore. Don't shoot the arrow and go ahead
- 55:56Speaker 1: and let down, and then have them give you the time. Yeah,
- 55:59Speaker 1: I'll bet it will shock you because you'll think your
- 56:02Speaker 1: this has been three minutes and it's been seconds. Yeah, yeah,
- 56:08Speaker 1: it feels like forever. But um, and then gradually you
- 56:12Speaker 1: know you you can build up um your strength and
- 56:15Speaker 1: stamina by doing that. But only if you have a
- 56:17Speaker 1: bow that will allow you to do that. Um. You
- 56:20Speaker 1: need to realize that there's gonna be lots of times
- 56:22Speaker 1: in a hunting situation where you're gonna where you're not
- 56:25Speaker 1: gonna just draw back everything. The stars are gonna align,
- 56:27Speaker 1: You're gonna put your pin there and the animal's gonna
- 56:29Speaker 1: stop perfectly and you're gonna shoot and boom. It took
- 56:32Speaker 1: from top to bottom. It took seven seconds. You know,
- 56:35Speaker 1: there's gonna be a lot of times where it's the
- 56:37Speaker 1: exact opposite, and that that that that bucks staring up
- 56:42Speaker 1: at you, or he all of a sudden quarter two
- 56:44Speaker 1: and you need for him to go back to a
- 56:47Speaker 1: broadside or quartering away position, or that bull comes in
- 56:49Speaker 1: and catches draw for a minute and he's just frozen
- 56:52Speaker 1: staring at you at a full frontal at thirty two yards,
- 56:54Speaker 1: and you have to hold through those moments. So again,
- 56:57Speaker 1: you've got to have a bow that allow you to
- 56:59Speaker 1: do that, and you have to practice being able to
- 57:01Speaker 1: do that too. Yeah, I know this drives you nuts.
- 57:04Speaker 1: But when you hear people say, you know, I held
- 57:06Speaker 1: on that I drew and I held back at full
- 57:08Speaker 1: draw for three minutes before I got that shot, I'm like, yeah,
- 57:11Speaker 1: you mean one seconds, yep, And I've done it as
- 57:15Speaker 1: far as I stroke me so nuts that like on
- 57:16Speaker 1: a lot of outdoor television shows and stuff like that,
- 57:18Speaker 1: guys are like, man, I held for two and a
- 57:21Speaker 1: half minutes. You know, all actually rewind it with our
- 57:23Speaker 1: TV technology. Now check it on my cell phone and
- 57:27Speaker 1: it was eighteen seconds. You know, it just feels like
- 57:29Speaker 1: that in the moment you're hyped up, your adrenaline is pumping,
- 57:33Speaker 1: muscles are starting to break down, the shop process is
- 57:35Speaker 1: starting to break down, and the urge to bail out
- 57:37Speaker 1: of that shot and everything else starts to creep in.
- 57:39Speaker 1: And you have to be able to stay poised and
- 57:41Speaker 1: stay steady and remain at full draw and just continue
- 57:44Speaker 1: to execute the best you can to give the to
- 57:47Speaker 1: put the best arrow out there that you can every shot. Yeah,
- 57:50Speaker 1: and that and that that urge to bail out, like
- 57:53Speaker 1: you said, is where a lot of quartering two shots
- 57:57Speaker 1: get taken and a lot of questionable shots because it's
- 58:00Speaker 1: like I gotta get this over, I'm gonna I'm gonna
- 58:02Speaker 1: have to let down or shoot, and people get in
- 58:05Speaker 1: the mindset that I gotta shoot, and that's when a
- 58:08Speaker 1: lot of that stuff really breaks bad. Yep, and and
- 58:12Speaker 1: something else. I know it might not be on the
- 58:14Speaker 1: full gear topic here, but one of the things I
- 58:16Speaker 1: want to recommend to people, especially with shooting, is you're
- 58:19Speaker 1: preparing for white tail season or whatever you're preparing yourself
- 58:23Speaker 1: for shooting, wise, come to the understanding and know right
- 58:27Speaker 1: now that you're human and that you're gonna have days
- 58:29Speaker 1: where you go out and shoot. You might shoot lights
- 58:32Speaker 1: out one day and you might feel like, oh my gosh,
- 58:35Speaker 1: everything in the world that gets and gets in front
- 58:37Speaker 1: of me this year is in trouble. You may go
- 58:40Speaker 1: out the next day and be like, this just isn't
- 58:43Speaker 1: going well, it's not feeling right. I'm not executing right.
- 58:47Speaker 1: Put the bow down, don't sit there and shoot two
- 58:50Speaker 1: d arrows to say you shot two hundred arrows and
- 58:52Speaker 1: develop bad habits. Let it go mentally, walk away from
- 58:56Speaker 1: the situation. Mentally, I mean, you look at the greatest
- 58:59Speaker 1: athletes in the world. You look at the Tom Brady's,
- 59:01Speaker 1: you look at the you know, U Saining Bowld, Michael Phelps,
- 59:04Speaker 1: whoever you want to look at some of the greatest
- 59:05Speaker 1: of all time. Every one of them has poor performances.
- 59:09Speaker 1: Every one of them has a bad day every now
- 59:12Speaker 1: and then, and you're going to be no different as
- 59:15Speaker 1: an archer. You're going to have those bad days, and
- 59:17Speaker 1: if you're out there, don't fight it. Don't fight the
- 59:20Speaker 1: mental game, don't fight the physical game. Don't start changing
- 59:23Speaker 1: things within your setup, and they can all my draw
- 59:26Speaker 1: links too long, or well I need to switch arrows,
- 59:28Speaker 1: or this release I should go to a hand durin
- 59:30Speaker 1: index or this or that. Stay true to what you
- 59:32Speaker 1: have and what has proven itself well for you, and
- 59:35Speaker 1: just realize I'm having a bad day. Put the bow up,
- 59:38Speaker 1: go play with your kids, go play with your dog,
- 59:40Speaker 1: go fishing, get away from it, and then pick it
- 59:43Speaker 1: up again. Because that's the best medicine you can you
- 59:46Speaker 1: can do for yourself, shooting wise, mentally wise, everything. Yeah,
- 59:51Speaker 1: And that's that's why you give yourself lots of time
- 59:55Speaker 1: to get in the groove over that's right, months and months,
- 59:57Speaker 1: and you don't pick up the bow on September first,
- 1:00:00Speaker 1: when the openers two weeks later, and that that that
- 1:00:03Speaker 1: idea of walking away, that's a hard one. It's a
- 1:00:07Speaker 1: hard one to realize how important it is. But there's
- 1:00:09Speaker 1: a reason if you're you know, I always say this
- 1:00:12Speaker 1: about people who miss miss a big buck at twenty
- 1:00:14Speaker 1: yards when they're like, oh man, I was just lights
- 1:00:16Speaker 1: out on the range, and I'm like, yeah, something was different.
- 1:00:19Speaker 1: What was it like? And when you think about if
- 1:00:22Speaker 1: you can go out and you're laying them in there
- 1:00:24Speaker 1: and you're having a great time target shooting, and the
- 1:00:26Speaker 1: next time you go out, you suck and you get
- 1:00:28Speaker 1: angry right away. You've got something else going on. You
- 1:00:31Speaker 1: shouldn't be there, and it's time to just put it
- 1:00:33Speaker 1: down and go back. Because we see the same thing
- 1:00:35Speaker 1: with dogs all the time, where a dog will be
- 1:00:37Speaker 1: just on fire, just everything's just tight one day, and
- 1:00:41Speaker 1: then the next day they're not into it, and it
- 1:00:43Speaker 1: does not do you any good to force them through
- 1:00:45Speaker 1: it because they're not going to get better. It's only
- 1:00:46Speaker 1: gonna get worse. That's right, it's gonna get worse before
- 1:00:50Speaker 1: it gets better. And then you have a whole new
- 1:00:51Speaker 1: slew of problems. Then things like target panic will start
- 1:00:54Speaker 1: to creep in. You'll start questioning everything that you do.
- 1:00:57Speaker 1: It's better to just walk away from it for that
- 1:00:59Speaker 1: for for that period of time, resume it again the
- 1:01:02Speaker 1: next day, get your mind right and go back after
- 1:01:04Speaker 1: it and realize that it was just you. You're human.
- 1:01:07Speaker 1: It happens um you've hunted, you've hunted mountain lions, elk,
- 1:01:13Speaker 1: all the western stuff, You've you've hunted white tails a lot.
- 1:01:18Speaker 1: What what is it? And a guy living in Colorado
- 1:01:22Speaker 1: like you, with the options that are there every year,
- 1:01:24Speaker 1: various tags you can get and you know the close
- 1:01:27Speaker 1: proximity states. What what is it about white tails that
- 1:01:30Speaker 1: hooked you? Well, I'll say hooked in a big way
- 1:01:34Speaker 1: because I haven't hunted mule deer here in eight years.
- 1:01:37Speaker 1: It has been eight years. I have some of the
- 1:01:38Speaker 1: best mule deer hunting that anyone could ask for twelve
- 1:01:41Speaker 1: minutes from my house and I haven't put in for
- 1:01:44Speaker 1: mule deer tag in eight years. And the reason for
- 1:01:47Speaker 1: it is is I love the whole process that is
- 1:01:49Speaker 1: white tail hunting. I love I love everything about it.
- 1:01:53Speaker 1: I love hanging the stands, I love trim and shooting lanes,
- 1:01:56Speaker 1: I love hanging cameras, I love scouting. I love watching
- 1:01:59Speaker 1: bucks on an alfalfa field. Um. And for me, being
- 1:02:05Speaker 1: able to hunt that animal for a long period of
- 1:02:09Speaker 1: time throughout different phases of their of the cycle from
- 1:02:13Speaker 1: September through December and see how things change and be
- 1:02:17Speaker 1: out there to experience that and is second is it's
- 1:02:21Speaker 1: it's the best. I mean, it is the it is
- 1:02:24Speaker 1: the absolute best. And so for me that is what
- 1:02:27Speaker 1: is fun. And I don't think personally as a bow hunter.
- 1:02:30Speaker 1: We bow hunt for a challenge in my opinion, I
- 1:02:33Speaker 1: love the challenge of bow hunting, and I don't know
- 1:02:35Speaker 1: that there's a bigger challenge than killing a mature white
- 1:02:37Speaker 1: tail buck. You have to be on your a game.
- 1:02:40Speaker 1: Everything has to be right or you just have to
- 1:02:41Speaker 1: get stupid, dumb lucky. And I don't get stupid dumb
- 1:02:45Speaker 1: lucky very often. I'm an unlucky person as it is,
- 1:02:48Speaker 1: and so I have to make sure everything is right
- 1:02:50Speaker 1: if I'm gonna and and killing killing any any white
- 1:02:53Speaker 1: tail for that matter. UM. I just I just like
- 1:02:56Speaker 1: the draw of it. I like how adaptable they are
- 1:02:58Speaker 1: as a species. I mean, we have them on the
- 1:03:00Speaker 1: prairie out here. I've seen him in the canyon country
- 1:03:03Speaker 1: standing next to mule deer out here. I love their adaptability. UM.
- 1:03:06Speaker 1: I love their aggressive nature when they rut. UM. I
- 1:03:10Speaker 1: love that they're susceptible to food patterns. UM that you
- 1:03:13Speaker 1: can put a lot of work in that water plays
- 1:03:15Speaker 1: such a huge role, um figuring out weather patterns, moon phases.
- 1:03:19Speaker 1: To me, it's the education part of it and being
- 1:03:22Speaker 1: a continual learner in realizing that when it comes to
- 1:03:25Speaker 1: that species, I I know nothing. I I think I
- 1:03:31Speaker 1: know a lot, but I know I know very little,
- 1:03:33Speaker 1: and that's that's exciting because I mean there's always room
- 1:03:37Speaker 1: to grow and get better. Um, and that's an any hunting,
- 1:03:40Speaker 1: but as a white tail hunter, I really feel like
- 1:03:42Speaker 1: there's so much to learn and get better at that
- 1:03:45Speaker 1: will make you a more accomplished white tail hunter. Is there?
- 1:03:48Speaker 1: Is there a part of it? Since you're you're born
- 1:03:50Speaker 1: and raised in Colorado, and Colorado is the destination for
- 1:03:54Speaker 1: non residents for elk right now, and just you know,
- 1:03:57Speaker 1: obviously antelope and and mule deer as well, but elk
- 1:04:00Speaker 1: is the big thing. Is there part of this, this
- 1:04:02Speaker 1: white tail obsession? Is it? Is it kind of one
- 1:04:05Speaker 1: of those things out there where you know, a lot
- 1:04:07Speaker 1: of Western states there's the keynote species and white tails
- 1:04:10Speaker 1: pretty bottom of the barrel. It doesn't get as much attention.
- 1:04:13Speaker 1: Is part of it? Just the fact that you've got
- 1:04:15Speaker 1: an animal there that's not getting as much attention as
- 1:04:18Speaker 1: the elk in the meal there and you can kind
- 1:04:19Speaker 1: of go work them and do your own thing without
- 1:04:21Speaker 1: constant people around you. Yeah, I'm not gonna I'm not
- 1:04:24Speaker 1: gonna sit here and tell you that it's not because
- 1:04:26Speaker 1: it is. I mean, white tail take I mean every
- 1:04:30Speaker 1: every deer tag in Colorado. We went to an all
- 1:04:32Speaker 1: draw system across the board for deer. You cannot get
- 1:04:35Speaker 1: in over the counter tag for deer, and I think
- 1:04:37Speaker 1: it's been gosh, it's been a grip of time. I
- 1:04:38Speaker 1: can't tell you how long. Um. But every year there's
- 1:04:42Speaker 1: white tail tags that are left over. I mean for rifle,
- 1:04:45Speaker 1: there's there's tons of white tail tags left over because
- 1:04:48Speaker 1: it is a secondary deer species, and a secondary species
- 1:04:52Speaker 1: when it comes to Colorado. In the West and where
- 1:04:55Speaker 1: I live, I have great access to white tails and
- 1:04:58Speaker 1: very few people that want anything to do with them
- 1:05:00Speaker 1: at all. So pressure is down, numbers are up, and
- 1:05:06Speaker 1: it's a great time to be a western white tail
- 1:05:07Speaker 1: hunter for that. For that reason, UM, so I paid
- 1:05:11Speaker 1: very close attention to that. UM. I didn't see another
- 1:05:14Speaker 1: hunter hunting public land where I hunted last year. Now
- 1:05:17Speaker 1: I do hunt a lot of private land here close.
- 1:05:19Speaker 1: But the tag I drew last year was a list
- 1:05:21Speaker 1: beat actually it was a list beach tag. Hydrow it
- 1:05:24Speaker 1: on my third choice and it was public or nothing
- 1:05:27Speaker 1: in that unit. So I hunted public land and I
- 1:05:30Speaker 1: hunted hard from October until the end of November when
- 1:05:33Speaker 1: I killed my buck minus the little COVID break. I
- 1:05:36Speaker 1: didn't see one other hunter on public land. I didn't
- 1:05:39Speaker 1: see a tree that had had a stand in it.
- 1:05:41Speaker 1: I didn't see boot tracks, I didn't have people bumbling
- 1:05:44Speaker 1: into a setup or guys parked in the parking area.
- 1:05:47Speaker 1: When I showed up, it was like hunting private land,
- 1:05:49Speaker 1: and the the the animals on that on those public
- 1:05:52Speaker 1: tracks acted like animals that we're on well managed private
- 1:05:56Speaker 1: land because they hadn't experienced pressure. Um So I got
- 1:05:59Speaker 1: to served. You know, that's a lot of fun when
- 1:06:02Speaker 1: you get to observe dear behavior the way they're supposed
- 1:06:04Speaker 1: to act when they're not being pressured. Um So that's
- 1:06:07Speaker 1: a big part of it for me and I and
- 1:06:08Speaker 1: I can't speak to a lot of other Western states, um,
- 1:06:12Speaker 1: but I know Colorado um white tail wise, it's it's
- 1:06:16Speaker 1: it's a secondary deer species. Yeah, well, and that's I
- 1:06:20Speaker 1: just did a piece about this where you know a
- 1:06:22Speaker 1: couple of situations where public land for white tails hunts
- 1:06:26Speaker 1: better than private land. And it's there's such a pervasive
- 1:06:31Speaker 1: mentality out there that you always got to get on
- 1:06:33Speaker 1: private ground to have the best deer hunting possible. And
- 1:06:36Speaker 1: one of the one of the examples I gave was,
- 1:06:38Speaker 1: you know, it's it's changing with Western white tails now
- 1:06:41Speaker 1: to some extent because some of the states like North
- 1:06:43Speaker 1: Dakota are really popular and people have their keyed into
- 1:06:46Speaker 1: that velvet hunting so that it's leveled off somewhere. But
- 1:06:49Speaker 1: there's still an element of you know, if you're in
- 1:06:52Speaker 1: the state that has six, seven, eight, ten big game
- 1:06:55Speaker 1: species that you might draw in a given year, the
- 1:06:58Speaker 1: white tails usually not going to be super high on
- 1:07:01Speaker 1: the list for a lot of people. And so those
- 1:07:04Speaker 1: public land situations can be really, really good because people
- 1:07:08Speaker 1: are looking for other stuff. Yeah, they can be money,
- 1:07:11Speaker 1: I mean. And with lots of Western states going, I mean,
- 1:07:13Speaker 1: we've seen walking access in my neck of the woods
- 1:07:16Speaker 1: just increased. Montana has the block Management program where a
- 1:07:19Speaker 1: lot of these areas where white tails dwell are being
- 1:07:22Speaker 1: opened up. You know, landowners are opening up um their
- 1:07:26Speaker 1: property to the state Game and Fish and they're working
- 1:07:29Speaker 1: together to create more access for hunters. And as that
- 1:07:32Speaker 1: access is created, um, you know, guys and gals get
- 1:07:36Speaker 1: a lot more opportunity. Um. I know, right here in
- 1:07:40Speaker 1: my little neck of the woods two years ago, there
- 1:07:42Speaker 1: was no walking access, zero you could not find walking access.
- 1:07:46Speaker 1: We had some state land, but no walking access. Right now,
- 1:07:50Speaker 1: I would say there is anywhere between seventy and eighty
- 1:07:55Speaker 1: thousand acres of prime walking access, and of that of
- 1:07:59Speaker 1: the at acreage, all of it is white tail. Now,
- 1:08:03Speaker 1: there will be mule deer there too. There you might
- 1:08:04Speaker 1: find some elk, roman a river bottom or a bear,
- 1:08:07Speaker 1: you know, those sorts of things. But when you look
- 1:08:09Speaker 1: at it as a as a big game hunter and
- 1:08:11Speaker 1: you start looking at where my neck of the woods
- 1:08:13Speaker 1: and start looking at those types of things, you say, well,
- 1:08:15Speaker 1: that's white tail habitats. Um, that's getting opened up. Um.
- 1:08:19Speaker 1: And it's yeah, I mean it's something that everybody should consider. Um,
- 1:08:23Speaker 1: the seasons out west or you know, they're long. We
- 1:08:26Speaker 1: have a we have a very extensive, very extensive seasons
- 1:08:29Speaker 1: where you can chase these deer and and experience them
- 1:08:32Speaker 1: at different points, um where where they are susceptible. I mean,
- 1:08:36Speaker 1: it's it's it makes it really neat. Yeah. Well at
- 1:08:38Speaker 1: that point there of you know that that being white
- 1:08:42Speaker 1: tailed ground with you know, the potential for some random
- 1:08:46Speaker 1: you know, some small population mule deer, small population elk whatever.
- 1:08:50Speaker 1: Nobody's going to those places to hunt elk. Like maybe
- 1:08:52Speaker 1: a local might get keyed in if they spot something,
- 1:08:55Speaker 1: but no dudes loading up in Texas and driving up
- 1:08:58Speaker 1: there and going, this is my elk spot there, They're
- 1:09:00Speaker 1: just not gonna happen. And you see this too. I've
- 1:09:04Speaker 1: seen this sometimes when I'm hunting western white tails. Is
- 1:09:07Speaker 1: even on national forest national grasslands where there are viable
- 1:09:12Speaker 1: populations of other species and people are drawn once in
- 1:09:15Speaker 1: a lifetime elk tag or their meal deer hunting or something.
- 1:09:18Speaker 1: They're they're not usually going and messing with those little
- 1:09:22Speaker 1: concentrations of white tails along the bottoms and the rivers.
- 1:09:25Speaker 1: And so even if it feels like there's a lot
- 1:09:27Speaker 1: of people around you, if they're not targeting white tails.
- 1:09:30Speaker 1: Where white tails live, you can have one hell of
- 1:09:32Speaker 1: a hunt, even if they're the surrounding areas getting hit
- 1:09:35Speaker 1: pretty hard. With other pressure, you can, you absolutely can.
- 1:09:38Speaker 1: And And one other thing not to not not to
- 1:09:41Speaker 1: get too concerned about because I've done a lot of
- 1:09:43Speaker 1: walk in hunting in Nebraska, Kansas, Colorado. Um, you know
- 1:09:48Speaker 1: a lot of guys will say, well, I don't want
- 1:09:49Speaker 1: hunt white tails there because I know those areas are
- 1:09:51Speaker 1: being opened up for bird hunters too. You know, there's
- 1:09:54Speaker 1: there's dub seasons going on, there's quail, there's pheasants, there's
- 1:09:56Speaker 1: guys accessing river bottoms and creeks for ducks and geese,
- 1:09:59Speaker 1: ag for geese. That sort of thing. You know, that
- 1:10:02Speaker 1: sort of thing is not something that you in my opinion,
- 1:10:05Speaker 1: that you that you really need to that you really
- 1:10:07Speaker 1: need to worry about. Yeah, you can pay attention to
- 1:10:08Speaker 1: where guys are at and stuff like that, but it
- 1:10:10Speaker 1: plays such a small role um in the over in
- 1:10:14Speaker 1: my experience, Um, yeah, I've had a pheasant hunter walk through, um,
- 1:10:18Speaker 1: you know, but then twenty five minutes later, I've had
- 1:10:21Speaker 1: four dos and a buck walk through. I mean, you
- 1:10:23Speaker 1: just you just don't know. Because a lot of these
- 1:10:25Speaker 1: Western deer are traveler there. They're they're big time travelers. Um.
- 1:10:30Speaker 1: Because there's a lot of areas where, you know, they
- 1:10:32Speaker 1: don't have a fifty acre block of timber that is
- 1:10:35Speaker 1: instant that they can just stay in and run circles
- 1:10:39Speaker 1: and live there. They they have very lots of areas
- 1:10:43Speaker 1: that are very open. They change betting areas constantly. They
- 1:10:46Speaker 1: move a lot, they get bumped, and they'll follow a
- 1:10:48Speaker 1: pinch point for miles along a creek and then be
- 1:10:50Speaker 1: somewhere completely different and be there for a while. So
- 1:10:53Speaker 1: you know, don't get too caught up in thinking that
- 1:10:55Speaker 1: you know, oh gosh, you know, a bird hunter walk
- 1:10:58Speaker 1: through and I'm done for the day. Just put stay
- 1:11:01Speaker 1: put in and and you know, know that there's deer
- 1:11:03Speaker 1: out there, and they're they're moving, especially you know during
- 1:11:06Speaker 1: those rut times, and and and you'll you'll have success. Yeah. Well,
- 1:11:10Speaker 1: and if as somebody who hunts pheasants a lot with dogs,
- 1:11:15Speaker 1: I can tell you that deer are very tolerant of
- 1:11:18Speaker 1: you if they think they're hidden, they you know. And
- 1:11:21Speaker 1: and honestly, you know, observing general hunting populations as far
- 1:11:26Speaker 1: as as bow hunters for white tails or pheasant hunters,
- 1:11:31Speaker 1: most people I see on public land are not working
- 1:11:34Speaker 1: that hard. There's the there's sort of this message out
- 1:11:37Speaker 1: there in the hunting media that if you're hunting public land,
- 1:11:39Speaker 1: you're busting your ass, and it is just not true.
- 1:11:42Speaker 1: There are people out there who are, for sure, But
- 1:11:44Speaker 1: a lot of times when you if you looked at
- 1:11:46Speaker 1: a you know, if you pull up on X and
- 1:11:48Speaker 1: you look at a spot and you're like, okay, well
- 1:11:49Speaker 1: there might be pheasant hunters in there. You can pretty
- 1:11:52Speaker 1: much call your shots on where they're going to be,
- 1:11:54Speaker 1: like you know where they're gonna hunt, and so okay, yeah,
- 1:11:57Speaker 1: maybe maybe don't throw on the gilly suit and sit
- 1:11:59Speaker 1: right in the middle of the c RP because that's
- 1:12:01Speaker 1: probably where they're going to end up. But you can
- 1:12:03Speaker 1: kind of predict that stuff. And no, and it is
- 1:12:06Speaker 1: you know, I mean, this stuff's multi use, like you're
- 1:12:07Speaker 1: gonna deal with other people coming in for other things,
- 1:12:11Speaker 1: but those deer are pretty used to that and they
- 1:12:13Speaker 1: know how to avoid them. So okay, what are you
- 1:12:14Speaker 1: gonna do? How are you going to get to where
- 1:12:16Speaker 1: the deer going to be when those pheasant hunters run
- 1:12:19Speaker 1: through there? Yep? Absolutely, And I you know, I've seen
- 1:12:23Speaker 1: it a bunch too, where I watched a buck two
- 1:12:25Speaker 1: years ago, Um got bumped out of a little tamarack thicket.
- 1:12:29Speaker 1: UM buy some some peasant hunters. They were pushing the
- 1:12:31Speaker 1: creek bottom. I was in a tree stand about half
- 1:12:33Speaker 1: a mile away. I was glassing them because I wanted
- 1:12:35Speaker 1: to see what they were doing, how they were gonna
- 1:12:37Speaker 1: use the terrain that sort of thing. How close that
- 1:12:39Speaker 1: I thought they might get to me? And I watched
- 1:12:41Speaker 1: him kick up this hundred thirty in white tail, and
- 1:12:44Speaker 1: that buck literally ran along the edge of the creek
- 1:12:48Speaker 1: for maybe fifty yards, went down in the creek across
- 1:12:53Speaker 1: the creek, came up almost parallel to him on the
- 1:12:55Speaker 1: other side. They never saw him, and he walked back
- 1:13:01Speaker 1: towards their direction and rebetted, and not in the same spot,
- 1:13:06Speaker 1: but on the other side of the creek. In in
- 1:13:08Speaker 1: the whole grand scheme of things, that buck didn't move
- 1:13:11Speaker 1: two fifty yards from where he got bumped. And so
- 1:13:14Speaker 1: thinking about that, if you weren't there and you were
- 1:13:16Speaker 1: hunting deer where those guys happened to go through, and
- 1:13:19Speaker 1: you you know, you weren't there in the morning, if
- 1:13:20Speaker 1: that was a morning sit and you were planning an
- 1:13:22Speaker 1: evening hunter or something like that, nothing nothing bad really happened.
- 1:13:27Speaker 1: You're gonna go in there. That buck is still gonna
- 1:13:28Speaker 1: be within that two hundred or three hundred yard radius
- 1:13:31Speaker 1: where you are sitting, and when he gets up and
- 1:13:34Speaker 1: moves for the evening or goes to food whatever, you know,
- 1:13:37Speaker 1: you can't over you can't overthink those types of things.
- 1:13:40Speaker 1: And and like you said, that buck, who knows how
- 1:13:42Speaker 1: many times he got bumped out of that tamarack patch
- 1:13:44Speaker 1: by a bird hunter or a farmer coming in to
- 1:13:46Speaker 1: check cattle or whatever. I mean, I think I don't
- 1:13:49Speaker 1: know if this is true or not, but I kind
- 1:13:51Speaker 1: of think that's one of the benefits of hunting public
- 1:13:53Speaker 1: land white tails is because I've seen that happen many
- 1:13:56Speaker 1: times to where it's like they if they reacted the
- 1:14:00Speaker 1: way we kind of give them credit for, like, oh,
- 1:14:01Speaker 1: that buck's gonna be out of here, and he's not
- 1:14:03Speaker 1: coming back for a long time, Like, they don't do that.
- 1:14:05Speaker 1: Like they get bumped a lot. Like if you if
- 1:14:07Speaker 1: you look at some of these properties around my house
- 1:14:09Speaker 1: here in the Twin Cities between just the people up
- 1:14:13Speaker 1: you know, with their dogs, hunting, woodcock hunters whatever. Yeah,
- 1:14:16Speaker 1: thin get bumped all the time. They always come back. Yeah,
- 1:14:20Speaker 1: there's a lot you can do with that and realize
- 1:14:23Speaker 1: that those spooked here, they're not that bad. They're gonna
- 1:14:26Speaker 1: come back around, like you said, And when you observe
- 1:14:28Speaker 1: them in those situations, you see how they really function
- 1:14:32Speaker 1: versus what we think. So it's so fascinating to to
- 1:14:36Speaker 1: get like to get those lessons that teach you, Like
- 1:14:39Speaker 1: I always thought they did this, and then I got
- 1:14:41Speaker 1: to actually watch a buck get bumped in this situation
- 1:14:45Speaker 1: and see his entire reaction to that, and see how
- 1:14:49Speaker 1: how much less drastic it was. That stuff so cool.
- 1:14:52Speaker 1: It's very cool. It's very cool to observe. And and
- 1:14:55Speaker 1: a lot of times our perceptions are so far off,
- 1:14:58Speaker 1: you know, to what we think, you know, to what
- 1:15:00Speaker 1: we think happened and would actually happened. So you know,
- 1:15:04Speaker 1: it's just sometimes, like we've talked about this before, you
- 1:15:06Speaker 1: can be your own worsten to me out there. I
- 1:15:09Speaker 1: talked to Mark about that all the time. I'm like,
- 1:15:11Speaker 1: what we think we know, that's the enemy. I don't
- 1:15:14Speaker 1: think he believes me, but I'm gonna convince him yet. Yeah,
- 1:15:16Speaker 1: And it's true. I mean, it is the enemy because
- 1:15:18Speaker 1: it changes our whole mindset and it can change our
- 1:15:20Speaker 1: entire game plan about how we're going to go about things.
- 1:15:22Speaker 1: I mean, I've seen I've had lots of buddies be like,
- 1:15:24Speaker 1: you know, I'm not going to go out this evening. Uh.
- 1:15:27Speaker 1: You know, the rancher called me and a guy drove
- 1:15:29Speaker 1: through there, and you know, they were wrangling up the
- 1:15:32Speaker 1: horses on there, and I'm just I'm not even gonna
- 1:15:34Speaker 1: go out now, it's not even worth it those deer
- 1:15:35Speaker 1: two miles away. Uh. You know, you can, you can
- 1:15:38Speaker 1: convince yourself of a lot of things, but if you're
- 1:15:41Speaker 1: not out there, I mean, and when you do go
- 1:15:43Speaker 1: out there, like you said, and you witness some of
- 1:15:44Speaker 1: these things, and you see how those deer react to pressure,
- 1:15:47Speaker 1: and you're like, whoa, that's so much different than what
- 1:15:50Speaker 1: I thought that they would do. Or you know, it
- 1:15:54Speaker 1: opens your eyes to a lot of things, and it
- 1:15:56Speaker 1: it helps you, um not overthinking a lot of times. Yeah,
- 1:16:00Speaker 1: I mean I had back to back years I had situations.
- 1:16:04Speaker 1: One one was on public here in the Cities where
- 1:16:06Speaker 1: I had a woodcock hunter. I was watching a doll
- 1:16:09Speaker 1: way out in the field. I had a woodcock hunter
- 1:16:11Speaker 1: push it right to me and I killed her. And
- 1:16:12Speaker 1: then the next year I had a doe and two
- 1:16:15Speaker 1: funds come down go out and do a field. This
- 1:16:16Speaker 1: was on private and then I heard that chug of
- 1:16:19Speaker 1: a four wheeler goddamn it came in push that doll
- 1:16:22Speaker 1: right in front of me and I shot her. And
- 1:16:24Speaker 1: you know last year that buck I killed in in
- 1:16:26Speaker 1: Iowa down there on public land, I bumped that buck
- 1:16:28Speaker 1: out of his bed, he ran away, and I killed
- 1:16:30Speaker 1: him an hour and a half later when he came back.
- 1:16:32Speaker 1: You know, like exactly. It's it's real important to to
- 1:16:37Speaker 1: see that stuff happen and experience it because it changes
- 1:16:40Speaker 1: your entire outlook forever, because you go, this is not yeah,
- 1:16:44Speaker 1: you know, you jump them, they might not come back
- 1:16:45Speaker 1: right like, you might not ever see him again, but
- 1:16:48Speaker 1: it's not a foregone conclusion that it's going to go
- 1:16:50Speaker 1: that way. And a lot of times we give these
- 1:16:52Speaker 1: deers so much credit, especially Bucks, and be like, oh,
- 1:16:55Speaker 1: they're like supernatural and they have a sixth sense and
- 1:16:57Speaker 1: there's no way he's coming. I'm like, he lives there,
- 1:17:00Speaker 1: he said, this is a rabbit with antlers that lives there.
- 1:17:03Speaker 1: That's his home. He's coming back, And yeah, he might
- 1:17:06Speaker 1: get a little bit a little bit trickier around that
- 1:17:08Speaker 1: area to figure out, but it's not he's not hopping
- 1:17:11Speaker 1: over to the next section. If they did that every
- 1:17:13Speaker 1: time you jumped him, they would all die as year
- 1:17:15Speaker 1: and a half old because they'd be an unfamiliar territory
- 1:17:17Speaker 1: constantly yep, yep, And they don't want to put themselves
- 1:17:21Speaker 1: in that position. And you know it, it was neat
- 1:17:24Speaker 1: for me last year. A guy in Nebraska that I know,
- 1:17:27Speaker 1: not not that my buddy Tearing that I always hunt with,
- 1:17:29Speaker 1: but one of his buddies. He has a he has
- 1:17:31Speaker 1: a just a great farm out there, and he shot
- 1:17:34Speaker 1: this year twice during archery season. He shot him once
- 1:17:36Speaker 1: in October, and shot him again in November, and killed
- 1:17:40Speaker 1: him with a rifle in December. And that was on
- 1:17:42Speaker 1: like fifty acres. That buck never left there, and he
- 1:17:45Speaker 1: had been shot twice with an arrow, survived and got
- 1:17:51Speaker 1: killed opening morning a rifle. So to say, like, you know,
- 1:17:55Speaker 1: oh my gosh, I never I'm never going to see
- 1:17:56Speaker 1: that buck again. He's going totally nocturnal. He'll never he'll
- 1:18:00Speaker 1: never be a day walker again. Yeah. Man, No, I
- 1:18:04Speaker 1: don't buy it. I just have seen too much. I've
- 1:18:06Speaker 1: heard too much. I mean you just yeah, yeah that.
- 1:18:10Speaker 1: I was thinking about that when I was I was
- 1:18:12Speaker 1: doing an interview the other day. Um, when you start
- 1:18:16Speaker 1: hunting public land, or you start hunting a lot of pressure, dear,
- 1:18:19Speaker 1: it's amazing how often when you butcher them you find
- 1:18:21Speaker 1: a you know, a muzzleta hole in, or an old
- 1:18:24Speaker 1: broad head, or they've got some kind of serious wound
- 1:18:28Speaker 1: to them. Yep, yep, they do that. They'll they'll have some,
- 1:18:32Speaker 1: but like you said, a lot of them they have
- 1:18:34Speaker 1: a home and that home is what they're most familiar with,
- 1:18:37Speaker 1: and that's that home is where they feel the most comfortable.
- 1:18:40Speaker 1: They know how to they know every nook and cranny
- 1:18:43Speaker 1: of that area, as opposed to, like you said, wandering
- 1:18:45Speaker 1: into a new area for the first time. I mean,
- 1:18:48Speaker 1: how out of place do you feel when you go
- 1:18:52Speaker 1: you know, when you go on the first time. Remember
- 1:18:54Speaker 1: the first time I left here and went to Canada
- 1:18:56Speaker 1: and just crossing the border to go hunt, I felt
- 1:18:59Speaker 1: I didn't feel comfortable. I felt odd, I felt out
- 1:19:03Speaker 1: of place. The territory. I couldn't see five ft in
- 1:19:05Speaker 1: front of my face because the trees, and if it
- 1:19:07Speaker 1: was an opening, it was freaking water. And I didn't
- 1:19:11Speaker 1: feel comfortable. Um, it's it's they're they're no different in
- 1:19:14Speaker 1: those terms. I mean, you know, they moved to a
- 1:19:16Speaker 1: new area and sometimes they get forced into that. Yeah,
- 1:19:18Speaker 1: but when they do, they're not comfortable. Yeah, you want
- 1:19:22Speaker 1: to talk about being uncomfortable. Grew up in the Midwest
- 1:19:25Speaker 1: and then head to the Hunt of Colorado in August,
- 1:19:28Speaker 1: you'd be like, well, there's a rattlesnake, there's some fire ants,
- 1:19:30Speaker 1: here's a trantula hawk chasing me. Don't forget about the
- 1:19:33Speaker 1: scorpions and the occasional black widow and the blonde. My
- 1:19:36Speaker 1: buddy just got stung by a scorpion. Yeah, so much fun, man,
- 1:19:41Speaker 1: Thank you so much for coming on. Lots of good information. Uh.
- 1:19:44Speaker 1: I can't wait to see the sheep that you kill. Uh,
- 1:19:48Speaker 1: super stoke for you for that, man, I'm excited. Thanks
- 1:19:50Speaker 1: for having me. Um always been a fan of this
- 1:19:53Speaker 1: podcast and it was it was an honor to get
- 1:19:55Speaker 1: to be on it. And yeah, I hope guys and
- 1:19:56Speaker 1: gals can find some useful information there. And uh, I'm
- 1:19:59Speaker 1: looking forward to the sheep Hunt hopefully. You know you'll
- 1:20:02Speaker 1: be updated regularly as you know. Definitely. Well, good luck buddy,
- 1:20:05Speaker 1: all right, but thanks. Well that's it for this week,
- 1:20:10Speaker 1: my friends. I have been your guest host Tony Peterson,
