- 0:00Speaker 1: Live from the Skying New Center. This is the Kenny Report.
- 0:06Speaker 2: Welcome to The Kenny Report.
- 0:07Speaker 3: I'm Daniki di Giorgio filling in for Chris this week.
- 0:10Speaker 3: In breaking news, alleged Bondai gunman Navid Akram has just
- 0:15Speaker 3: been charged with fifty nine offenses in the wake of
- 0:18Speaker 3: Sunday's terror attack, including fifteen counts of murder and one
- 0:22Speaker 3: count of committing a terrorist act. The twenty four year
- 0:25Speaker 3: old is expected to appear before a Sydney court this
- 0:28Speaker 3: afternoon from his hospital bed, and will have more on
- 0:31Speaker 3: that breaking news throughout the show. Also coming up, Anthony
- 0:35Speaker 3: Arberzi urged to recall Parliament to implement recommendations by the
- 0:39Speaker 3: Anti Semitism Envoy as the Prime Minister faces mounting criticism
- 0:44Speaker 3: for his lack of action.
- 0:46Speaker 4: It's time for him to accept personal responsibility for the
- 0:50Speaker 4: death of fifteen innocent people, including a ten.
- 0:54Speaker 5: Year old child.
- 0:55Speaker 3: Here, Julian Lisa and Garth Hamilton will join me shortly
- 0:58Speaker 3: plus mounting calls to shut down Sydney's notorious Al Medina
- 1:02Speaker 3: Dhawar center allegedly linked to the radicalization of Navid Akram,
- 1:07Speaker 3: will go live to Israel and catch up with Deputy
- 1:10Speaker 3: Foreign Minister Sharon Haskell as well for the Jewish States
- 1:13Speaker 3: reaction that and more coming up shortly. The funeral services
- 1:20Speaker 3: for three of the fifteen victims of the Bondai massacre
- 1:23Speaker 3: were held today. Rabbi Eli Schlanger, Rabbi Jakov Levitan and
- 1:29Speaker 3: Ruvin Morrison were laid to rest. Rabbi Schlanger was remembered
- 1:33Speaker 3: as a devoted husband and father of five.
- 1:38Speaker 6: Ellie was ripped away from us in the midst of
- 1:41Speaker 6: doing what he did best, spreading yiddishkaid, spreading love and
- 1:46Speaker 6: joy and caring for his people with endless self sacrifice.
- 1:53Speaker 6: In his life and in his death, he towered above
- 1:57Speaker 6: as one of the highest and holiest souls.
- 2:02Speaker 3: New South Wales Premier Min's, former Prime Minister Scott Morrison
- 2:06Speaker 3: and Opposition leader Susan Lee were among the mourners. Thirteen
- 2:10Speaker 3: of the victims have now been identified ten year old
- 2:13Speaker 3: Matilda Rabbi Eli Schlanger, Rabbi Yakov Levetan, Edith Brutman, Marika Pogany,
- 2:20Speaker 3: Dan Elkman, Peter Maher, Alexander Klayman, t Boll Whitson, Ruven Morrison,
- 2:27Speaker 3: Boris and Sophia German and Boris Tedleeroyd Laperou's public school
- 2:33Speaker 3: where little Matilda went has paid tribute to a girl
- 2:35Speaker 3: they called a ray of sunshine. She is genuinely the
- 2:38Speaker 3: most kind, caring and compassionate young girl who brightened everyone's
- 2:43Speaker 3: day with her radiant smile and infectious laugh.
- 2:46Speaker 2: We watched Matilda.
- 2:47Speaker 3: Reach every single goal she set out to achieve, and
- 2:50Speaker 3: we are so proud of her. Matilda has a strength
- 2:53Speaker 3: and joy for life that we will always cherish and
- 2:57Speaker 3: remember her. Mum and Dad also went down too the
- 3:00Speaker 3: memorial last night and addressed the mourners.
- 3:04Speaker 7: And then Materilia because soon was Australia. The vicame here
- 3:09Speaker 7: from from Ukraine and Matilda was I felt first the
- 3:16Speaker 7: one in Australia, and I thought that Matilda's it was
- 3:20Speaker 7: Australian name, the kind. So just remember, remember the name.
- 3:29Speaker 3: Remember how it's truly unfathomable what those parents are going through.
- 3:35Speaker 3: And among all the sadness comes more stories of unbelievable
- 3:40Speaker 3: heroism and bravery. Boris and Sophia German almost stopped this,
- 3:45Speaker 3: and they put themselves on the line to do so.
- 3:47Speaker 3: You can see in this dash cam vision mister German
- 3:50Speaker 3: tackled fifty year old gunman Sajed Akram to the ground
- 3:54Speaker 3: and wrestled a long arm rifle from him, but the
- 3:57Speaker 3: alleged gunment was so heavily armed that the guns were
- 4:00Speaker 3: turned on the couple, and they had just been about
- 4:03Speaker 3: to celebrate their thirty fifth wedding anniversary and paid for
- 4:06Speaker 3: it with their lives. They put themselves in harm's way
- 4:09Speaker 3: and tried to stop this, but they couldn't do it.
- 4:13Speaker 3: Then there's Reuven Morrison, who bravely threw a brick at
- 4:16Speaker 3: one of the alleged terrorists before he too was killed,
- 4:19Speaker 3: but those deaths will never be in vain. Then there's
- 4:23Speaker 3: the hero cop who shot the alleged gunman from forty
- 4:27Speaker 3: meters away. He's been named as Detective Senior Constable Caesar
- 4:31Speaker 3: Cess Baratza.
- 4:32Speaker 2: Have a look.
- 4:46Speaker 3: Senior police have told The Daily Telegraph even the best
- 4:49Speaker 3: shooters in the force would have struggled to hit the
- 4:51Speaker 3: target considering both the distance of the police officer from
- 4:55Speaker 3: the Akrams and also the pressure of being fired upon himself.
- 4:58Speaker 2: Absolutely incredible.
- 5:00Speaker 3: And of course AHMEDA Ahmed, who ran up behind one
- 5:02Speaker 3: of the alleged terrorists and tackled and disarmed him, and
- 5:05Speaker 3: he is still recovering in hospital from his injuries. In
- 5:09Speaker 3: the very worst of times, the Australian spirit.
- 5:12Speaker 2: Is what keeps us together.
- 5:18Speaker 8: Well.
- 5:18Speaker 3: The grieving has turned to anger, anger because this was
- 5:21Speaker 3: all too predictable. It's been three days since the Bondai
- 5:25Speaker 3: massacre and the Prime Minister has failed in his duty,
- 5:29Speaker 3: failed to rise to the occasion in this moment of hurt, despair,
- 5:33Speaker 3: shock and sadness to reassure us that he is doing
- 5:36Speaker 3: everything in his power to ensure this never happens again.
- 5:41Speaker 3: The Prime Minister has made only one fleeting visit to
- 5:44Speaker 3: the Bondai memorial and that was early on Monday morning
- 5:47Speaker 3: and has not gone back since, not once. He didn't
- 5:51Speaker 3: attend the funeral today for Rabbi Eli Schlanger. We essentially
- 5:56Speaker 3: have an invisible Prime Minister in a moment of heart
- 6:00Speaker 3: take and what does his vanishing act say Well to me, it's.
- 6:04Speaker 2: All about the optics for him.
- 6:06Speaker 3: About what it would look like for him if he
- 6:09Speaker 3: got heckled at the memorial, just like the Home Affairs
- 6:11Speaker 3: Minister Tony Burke did when he came under the cover
- 6:14Speaker 3: of darkness on Monday night. The Prime Minister won't even
- 6:20Speaker 3: show his face, won't even show an ounce of courage
- 6:24Speaker 3: to go out again to Bondi, to read all of
- 6:28Speaker 3: those messages of heartache, to speak to the community, to
- 6:32Speaker 3: see the tributes that line the footpaths. He won't show
- 6:36Speaker 3: his face. And that is not a prime minister. A
- 6:40Speaker 3: good leader doesn't shy away from criticism. They aren't scared
- 6:44Speaker 3: of being heckled or booed. They face it head on
- 6:47Speaker 3: and critically listen, make change and unite the country.
- 6:52Speaker 2: Anthony Alberezi missed the moment.
- 6:54Speaker 3: More scared about being booed or compare that to being
- 6:58Speaker 3: scared while running away while being shot at.
- 7:03Speaker 2: Former treasurer and prominent member.
- 7:04Speaker 3: Of the Jewish community Josh Friedenberg paid his respects at
- 7:08Speaker 3: the Bondai memorial today and this was a very emotional
- 7:12Speaker 3: moment for him because he's been at the heart of
- 7:14Speaker 3: the anti Semitism battle and Josh Friedenburg summed up the
- 7:19Speaker 3: mood of the nation in a way the Prime Minister
- 7:22Speaker 3: has failed to.
- 7:24Speaker 5: This massacre at Bondai.
- 7:29Speaker 4: Is the greatest stain on this nation, has brought the
- 7:34Speaker 4: greatest shame.
- 7:37Speaker 5: To our nation. I'm here to mourn but I'm also
- 7:48Speaker 5: here to warn.
- 7:52Speaker 4: Unless our governments, federal and state, take urgent.
- 8:00Speaker 5: He sedented and strong action.
- 8:04Speaker 4: As night follows day, we will be back grieving the
- 8:09Speaker 4: loss of innocent life in another terrorist attack in our country.
- 8:15Speaker 3: And he's right, we know those warnings have been there.
- 8:18Speaker 3: Anthony Abernese's very own Special Envoy, Gillian Siegel's report has
- 8:22Speaker 3: sat on his desk catching dust for six months. State
- 8:26Speaker 3: leaders were forced to push the PM on if he
- 8:28Speaker 3: had any new ideas on how to tackle anti Semitism
- 8:32Speaker 3: after they had to stop him from talking about gun
- 8:35Speaker 3: reform and focusing on more detail on anti Jewish hate.
- 8:39Speaker 3: During an emergency meeting of National Cabinet this week, it
- 8:42Speaker 3: was reported he didn't even raise Gillian Siegel's report at
- 8:45Speaker 3: that meeting. Now the PM claims that's not the case,
- 8:49Speaker 3: but he won't even say if he directly raise.
- 8:51Speaker 2: The report before he was prompted.
- 8:54Speaker 3: So my question now is why hasn't the Prime Minister
- 8:57Speaker 3: recalled Parliament this week as an emergency to pass legislative
- 9:02Speaker 3: recommendations in the wake of the attack. If what happened
- 9:05Speaker 3: at Bondai means anything, if the deaths of fifteen people
- 9:08Speaker 3: is not enough for the Prime Minister to get a
- 9:10Speaker 3: move on, then nothing is ever going to change and
- 9:13Speaker 3: I just spare for this country. But it seems it's
- 9:16Speaker 3: all in the too hard basket for Anthony Arberanzi. Here
- 9:19Speaker 3: was his response today when asked about what he can
- 9:22Speaker 3: do to fight radical Islamic preachers.
- 9:25Speaker 9: It is difficult, and this is something the world is
- 9:29Speaker 9: dealing with. It is indeed, as you identify, hard to
- 9:37Speaker 9: legislate against such massive hatred and people who have this
- 9:44Speaker 9: perversion of Islam that leads them to support Islamic state
- 9:52Speaker 9: and to have a view that somehow there is some
- 9:57Speaker 9: reward for them.
- 9:58Speaker 8: There is not.
- 10:00Speaker 10: They are evil.
- 10:02Speaker 9: We need to make sure that we do whatever is
- 10:07Speaker 9: within our powers. Now that means education, it means as well,
- 10:13Speaker 9: stamping out, calling out evil when we see it, and
- 10:18Speaker 9: we'll continue to do so, not just as a government,
- 10:22Speaker 9: but as a nation as well.
- 10:25Speaker 2: It's hard to legislate, that was his answer.
- 10:28Speaker 3: The nation is grieving right now, and the Prime Minister
- 10:31Speaker 3: says it's too hard and he can't even say it
- 10:33Speaker 3: out loud. That this attack was motivated by religion, it
- 10:37Speaker 3: was Islamic extremism, and the answers on what to do
- 10:40Speaker 3: were right in front of you this, Prime Minister, because
- 10:43Speaker 3: this is the message of hate that's been preached just
- 10:45Speaker 3: thirty kilometers away from the site of the Bondai massacre.
- 10:49Speaker 11: Can't take away from the fact, first and foremost that
- 10:53Speaker 11: jihad is definitely part of elgin and as Muslims, we
- 10:57Speaker 11: should never ever show away from this. And yes, then
- 11:03Speaker 11: they may be types of jihad. What of the peak
- 11:06Speaker 11: of this jihad is that which the message of Muhammad
- 11:08Speaker 11: Solalidi was set and spoken about. And I'll read the
- 11:11Speaker 11: hadithsum and that is fighting in the path of Allas origin,
- 11:15Speaker 11: a physical fight.
- 11:17Speaker 3: So what can you do, Prime Minister? Go to the
- 11:20Speaker 3: mosques and shut those preachers down. Shut down Islam centers
- 11:24Speaker 3: like the Almadina Dhahwa Center in Bankstown that's been linked
- 11:28Speaker 3: to alleged Bondai gunman Navid Akram. If they're preaching hate,
- 11:32Speaker 3: arrest them, if they're dual citizens or on visas, deport them.
- 11:36Speaker 2: Call on Muslim.
- 11:37Speaker 3: Leaders to step up and call out radical Islam. Overhaul
- 11:41Speaker 3: the migration system, Implement better checks and balances for people
- 11:45Speaker 3: coming into this country. Use whatever means possible to screen
- 11:49Speaker 3: people already here. If their values don't align, send them
- 11:53Speaker 3: back to where they came from, and better funding for
- 11:57Speaker 3: security agencies, ban extremism or organizations. Come on, Prime Minister.
- 12:02Speaker 3: Here was Opposition Leader Susan Lee on that.
- 12:04Speaker 12: Today and the roadmap to that immediate action is sitting
- 12:09Speaker 12: on the Prime Minister's desk. And there are more things
- 12:12Speaker 12: that he could be doing and should be doing in
- 12:14Speaker 12: the wake of this horrific massacre. But has he told
- 12:18Speaker 12: the Australian people, has he reassured the Jewish community? Is
- 12:22Speaker 12: he here at Bondi, Has he walked the streets as
- 12:25Speaker 12: we have? Has he listened?
- 12:28Speaker 3: There was also an astonishing concession of sorts from Foreign
- 12:31Speaker 3: Minister Penny Wong that the Albanese government must do more
- 12:35Speaker 3: to combat rising anti Semitism.
- 12:38Speaker 13: We are determined to eradicate anti Semitism in our country
- 12:43Speaker 13: and we are determined to work to bring Australians together.
- 12:47Speaker 13: I keep saying this, but it is true. We are
- 12:49Speaker 13: stronger when we are more united, and there is much
- 12:53Speaker 13: in our community that we can look to. You know
- 12:56Speaker 13: that gives us hope and inspiration.
- 13:00Speaker 3: Look, this is an insult now, she says more needs
- 13:03Speaker 3: to be done. Now that fifteen innocent people have been
- 13:06Speaker 3: murdered in cold blood. For two years, this government has
- 13:09Speaker 3: sat on its hands as anti Semitism reached havoc and
- 13:13Speaker 3: our social fabric buckled. Where was the condemnation when the
- 13:16Speaker 3: Israeli flag was set alight on the steps of the
- 13:19Speaker 3: Sydney Opera House?
- 13:20Speaker 2: Or when where are the Jews?
- 13:21Speaker 3: Or whatever was chanted when the Sydney Harbor Bridge was
- 13:25Speaker 3: hijacked by protesters who chanted death to the IDF and
- 13:28Speaker 3: waived flags of terror groups like mus or when the
- 13:31Speaker 3: radical hate preachers bragged about October seven? Where was the
- 13:36Speaker 3: condemnation and where was the action? You were nowhere, Penny Wong,
- 13:40Speaker 3: and neither was Anthony Albernezi two, preoccupied with recognizing a
- 13:45Speaker 3: Palestinian state and putting votes before values.
- 13:48Speaker 2: So spare us.
- 13:50Speaker 3: We are stronger when we are more united, and more
- 13:52Speaker 3: needs to be done.
- 13:53Speaker 2: Lecture, it's an insult.
- 13:56Speaker 3: And Josh Fridenberg put it so well today as he
- 13:59Speaker 3: called for a commission.
- 14:01Speaker 4: It's time for him to accept personal responsibility for the
- 14:05Speaker 4: death of fifteen innocent people, including.
- 14:09Speaker 5: A ten year old child. It's time our Prime minister.
- 14:16Speaker 4: Accepted accountability for what has happened here, and it's time
- 14:24Speaker 4: our leaders stood up.
- 14:29Speaker 5: And led at last.
- 14:31Speaker 4: Australia has been radicalized in an unprecedented way in the
- 14:36Speaker 4: last two and a half years on your watch, and
- 14:40Speaker 4: you are now responsible for fixing it, and you must
- 14:46Speaker 4: fix it otherwise there will be another attack and we
- 14:50Speaker 4: wouldn't have learnt the lessons that are here for everyone
- 14:53Speaker 4: to see.
- 14:54Speaker 3: The time for excuses is over. It was over two
- 14:57Speaker 3: years ago, but now is the time for change and
- 15:00Speaker 3: the time for action is now. Wake up, Anthony Albanizi.
- 15:08Speaker 3: Let's return out to that breaking news. We have more
- 15:11Speaker 3: details that the alleged Bondi gunman has this afternoon been
- 15:14Speaker 3: charged with fifty nine offenses. Members of the New South
- 15:17Speaker 3: Wales Joint counter Terrorism Team attended the hospital where the
- 15:20Speaker 3: twenty four year old man is being detained. The fifty
- 15:23Speaker 3: nine charges include fifteen counts of murder, one count of
- 15:27Speaker 3: committing a terrorist act, one count of discharging a firearm
- 15:31Speaker 3: in public, one count of causing a public display of
- 15:35Speaker 3: a prohibited terrorst simpol, one count of placing an explosive
- 15:39Speaker 3: in or near a building with intent to cause harm,
- 15:42Speaker 3: forty counts of wounding with intent to murder, and police
- 15:46Speaker 3: will allege the man engaged in conduct which caused death,
- 15:49Speaker 3: serious injury and endangered life to advance a religious cause
- 15:54Speaker 3: and cause fear in the community. And will have more
- 15:57Speaker 3: on this to come. Let's bring in LMPP Garth Hamilton. Now, Garth,
- 16:02Speaker 3: thank you so much for joining me. Firstly, I just
- 16:04Speaker 3: want to get your reaction now that charges have been laid.
- 16:10Speaker 14: Look like a lot of people, it's hard not to
- 16:11Speaker 14: be angry.
- 16:12Speaker 15: Still.
- 16:13Speaker 14: You go away and you think about it, and then
- 16:15Speaker 14: each one of those counts, the fifteen people who died,
- 16:20Speaker 14: You hear their names for it out, and it just
- 16:21Speaker 14: starts all over again to hear that name Matilda called out,
- 16:25Speaker 14: and just recall the beautiful pitches of that young girl. Goodness,
- 16:29Speaker 14: may this has gone to hurt for a long time yet,
- 16:30Speaker 14: isn't it?
- 16:31Speaker 2: Yeah, look it is.
- 16:32Speaker 3: And it was heartbreaking to hear from her mum and
- 16:35Speaker 3: dad speaking so bravely out at the Bondai memorial. I mean,
- 16:39Speaker 3: I just don't even know how anyone recovers from.
- 16:42Speaker 2: Something like this.
- 16:43Speaker 3: I just want to talk about the alleged radicalization of
- 16:46Speaker 3: Navid Akram. He was flagged by Asia as a teenager,
- 16:49Speaker 3: but not deemed a threat, and of course that will
- 16:51Speaker 3: now perform part of his investigation, but his alleged links
- 16:54Speaker 3: to the notorious Al Madina Dhawa Center had been revealed.
- 16:58Speaker 3: He's been accused of distributing amphlets tied to a movement
- 17:01Speaker 3: linked to radical preacher with some hadad.
- 17:04Speaker 2: Here he was spreading the so called message have a look.
- 17:07Speaker 15: Salam working bositis. We're here beings station, spreading Doah, doing
- 17:11Speaker 15: the work of the props, continuing the of the work.
- 17:13Speaker 16: Of the prophets.
- 17:14Speaker 15: Read the spread the message that allows one and Muhammed
- 17:16Speaker 15: last message over Tom Glos. Spread dollar wherever you can
- 17:20Speaker 15: spread the message, not loads one. Wherever you can spread
- 17:25Speaker 15: the message by pamphlets, whether it be one eye are
- 17:30Speaker 15: and whether it's in meaning healing or clear sky.
- 17:34Speaker 16: I will reward you or whatever action to do in
- 17:36Speaker 16: his cause.
- 17:37Speaker 15: Concholo, this will see you on the leg of judgment
- 17:40Speaker 15: when everyone will be asking where's the hope with this?
- 17:44Speaker 15: This will come for you and the dogman, So come
- 17:48Speaker 15: join us. I think someone or in your own area,
- 17:50Speaker 15: it's spread flam Salam.
- 17:52Speaker 3: Warning Garth, Look, how concerned are you about the radicalization
- 17:58Speaker 3: going on?
- 17:58Speaker 2: And should this center be shut down?
- 18:01Speaker 14: I think that's a very clear question. We need some
- 18:04Speaker 14: answers on very quickly of the view that it should
- 18:07Speaker 14: be and I think we should be looking very closely
- 18:09Speaker 14: at these hate preachers who seem to be the cause
- 18:13Speaker 14: of so much of the radicalization in our society. Is
- 18:17Speaker 14: there's a lot of questions here about how does this
- 18:20Speaker 14: slip through the cracks? And when you start to see
- 18:22Speaker 14: all the red flags that are being raised. And I
- 18:24Speaker 14: appreciate there's a lot of stuff that's going to come
- 18:26Speaker 14: through in the news over the coming weeks and months,
- 18:30Speaker 14: but these look like some pretty big cracks that someone
- 18:32Speaker 14: slipped through.
- 18:33Speaker 2: Absolutely.
- 18:34Speaker 3: And you know, we speak a lot about immigration, the
- 18:36Speaker 3: types of people we're bringing into this country, the types
- 18:39Speaker 3: of people we do have in this country.
- 18:41Speaker 2: What has to happen now in your view.
- 18:44Speaker 14: Well, look, I'm glad that we're having that conversation. It's
- 18:48Speaker 14: terrible that it's taken this event to have it. Sadly,
- 18:51Speaker 14: a lot of people have said this, this was foreseen.
- 18:54Speaker 14: Our intelligence agencies were telling us that there were problems
- 18:58Speaker 14: that we're building up, and there's been clear to our
- 19:01Speaker 14: immigration system. And I've got to say this because we
- 19:03Speaker 14: need to talk honestly in this time. I've going to
- 19:05Speaker 14: respect the people whose lives have been lost. This conversation
- 19:09Speaker 14: was started a while ago. I remember when Andrew Hasty
- 19:11Speaker 14: talked about this issue, and for doing so he was
- 19:14Speaker 14: rewarded by being squeezed off of our front bench. I
- 19:16Speaker 14: think I need to see this conversation front and center.
- 19:19Speaker 14: I think we need to be able to listen to
- 19:21Speaker 14: people when they raise these issues, because he was right
- 19:24Speaker 14: to raise them and we're right to.
- 19:25Speaker 5: Raise them now.
- 19:26Speaker 14: It's important that we understand how we shape our country
- 19:30Speaker 14: determines what happens in it, and if we're careless and
- 19:33Speaker 14: if we don't think about it, then these bad things
- 19:36Speaker 14: will continue to happen.
- 19:37Speaker 3: Look good on Andrew Hasty for raising it in the
- 19:39Speaker 3: first instance. It's something that both sides of politics largely
- 19:42Speaker 3: do shy away from. And the issue Garth is it's
- 19:45Speaker 3: not about being anti mass migration, but it's about better
- 19:48Speaker 3: checks and balances and also bringing in people whose values
- 19:52Speaker 3: actually align with a Western democracy. But we're talking here
- 19:55Speaker 3: about radical Islam that is completely incompatible is our way
- 20:00Speaker 3: of life?
- 20:01Speaker 2: Is it not?
- 20:02Speaker 8: Well?
- 20:02Speaker 14: I think we've seen clear evidence that that is exactly
- 20:05Speaker 14: the case. That what we have is an element within Australia.
- 20:08Speaker 14: Now within Australian society that does not share our values,
- 20:12Speaker 14: does not want us to succeed as a nation. We
- 20:15Speaker 14: have treasured diversity for such a long time and it's
- 20:18Speaker 14: a wonderful part of our history and where we come from.
- 20:20Speaker 14: But without unity of purpose, where we are going to
- 20:23Speaker 14: find ourselves caught in this same trap. And sadly, our
- 20:27Speaker 14: immigration system is the first and most important place that
- 20:31Speaker 14: we can be looking to that and we need to
- 20:33Speaker 14: have steps in place during the visa process where if
- 20:36Speaker 14: people fail to demonstrate their alignment with Australian values, that
- 20:42Speaker 14: there are penalties in place and that they can lose
- 20:44Speaker 14: their visa. These are simple obvious conversations. Sadly, now at
- 20:49Speaker 14: this terrible stage, when we look back with hindsight and
- 20:52Speaker 14: see what could have been done.
- 20:54Speaker 3: Absolutely, it's actually tragic that it's taken the senseless murders,
- 21:00Speaker 3: the senseless deaths of fifteen people for this conversation to
- 21:04Speaker 3: even be brought to light. And I know you've been
- 21:05Speaker 3: warning about this for some time, Garth Hamilton. We've got
- 21:09Speaker 3: to leave it there. Thank you very much for joining
- 21:10Speaker 3: me on the show. Really appreciate it. Well, let's get
- 21:12Speaker 3: an update now from the scene at Bondi joining me
- 21:15Speaker 3: as weekend newsday host Janie Seal. Janie, you've been there
- 21:18Speaker 3: all day. We can see the flowers behind you again.
- 21:21Speaker 3: They're growing and growing day by day as mourners come
- 21:23Speaker 3: to pay their respects.
- 21:25Speaker 2: Tell us the latest from the scene.
- 21:29Speaker 17: Yeah, absolutely, Denika. We saw Josh Friedenberg today. There were
- 21:35Speaker 17: so many people greeting him with hugs and so many tears.
- 21:39Speaker 17: He congratulated the Red Cross and the Salvation Army that
- 21:43Speaker 17: have been doing an amazing job here among so many
- 21:46Speaker 17: other people with the support for mental health.
- 21:49Speaker 10: And just feeding people.
- 21:50Speaker 17: And there's so much love from such a disastrous day
- 21:53Speaker 17: on Sunday, and of course so many people mourning. And
- 21:57Speaker 17: we've got to Alex Rifchin here, who has just been
- 22:01Speaker 17: to a funeral today. I'm really sorry to hear of
- 22:03Speaker 17: all of your losses. How was the funeral for Rabbi Shaya.
- 22:08Speaker 8: It was one of the most difficult things I've experienced.
- 22:11Speaker 8: You know, someone who I love deeply and had a
- 22:15Speaker 8: profound impact on my life and the life of this community.
- 22:19Speaker 8: But that's secondary to the loss, you know, of his
- 22:23Speaker 8: wife and of his kids, and seeing his wife who
- 22:26Speaker 8: herself was wounded in the back and was just released
- 22:28Speaker 8: from hospital for the funeral. Seeing his children, the youngest
- 22:32Speaker 8: one being eight weeks old, and seeing his eldest son
- 22:37Speaker 8: having to recite the mourner's prayer over his grave, it
- 22:40Speaker 8: was so heartbreaking, beyond words, and it just showed what
- 22:44Speaker 8: those people did to us, what they took from us,
- 22:47Speaker 8: and for what what did they gain from this? I
- 22:49Speaker 8: mean they've given up. The father gave up his life,
- 22:51Speaker 8: the son will give up his liberty for what gain
- 22:54Speaker 8: our misery, our pain. It just shows the psychosis of
- 22:58Speaker 8: this mania that week, anti Semitism and radical Islam that
- 23:02Speaker 8: has caused this. But it's really shattered the community. It's
- 23:05Speaker 8: going to take a long time to rebuild, if at all.
- 23:08Speaker 17: Yeah, absolutely, it really is. And we had a former
- 23:11Speaker 17: Prime Minister, John Howard on Sky News yesterday and we
- 23:15Speaker 17: were asking about hate and how we can get rid
- 23:18Speaker 17: of hate and he's basically said, you know, the opposite
- 23:21Speaker 17: of hate is love, and that's what we're seeing here
- 23:24Speaker 17: so much, isn't it.
- 23:25Speaker 8: Yeah, No, it's been beautiful and I'm still somewhat surprised
- 23:30Speaker 8: how many non Jewish people here. I know, I shouldn't
- 23:32Speaker 8: be surprised because Australians are fundamentally good and decent and
- 23:36Speaker 8: fair minded and compassionate. But I still view this as
- 23:39Speaker 8: primarily a Jewish traument I expected to be kind of internal.
- 23:43Speaker 8: But it shows how deeply affected the country is. And
- 23:47Speaker 8: I've met indigenous leaders from up and down the coast
- 23:49Speaker 8: who have come here to show that their mob is
- 23:51Speaker 8: with us, faith leaders, ordinary Aussies from all over the
- 23:56Speaker 8: country who just want to show this old Adian support,
- 23:58Speaker 8: and so many more have written, in, phoned and set
- 24:01Speaker 8: message on social media and all around the world. And
- 24:04Speaker 8: I know people are touched by this, and people are
- 24:06Speaker 8: angered by it and stand with us. And yet what
- 24:10Speaker 8: we've lost we can't get back, you know, and anything
- 24:13Speaker 8: good that comes from this. And Rabbi Shaying in particular
- 24:16Speaker 8: always saw the good in things and saw the need
- 24:18Speaker 8: to find good in dark moments, so he would have
- 24:21Speaker 8: liked this. But I think it's a too great a cost.
- 24:24Speaker 8: It's too great a price that we've paid for.
- 24:26Speaker 17: And so many people in the Jewish community have been
- 24:28Speaker 17: saying that they've been they weren't surprised, unfortunately, that something
- 24:33Speaker 17: like this happened.
- 24:35Speaker 10: And the next question I guess is where to from here.
- 24:38Speaker 17: We had Josh Fredenberg, you know, he was quite angry
- 24:41Speaker 17: and just saying that we need.
- 24:42Speaker 10: To look at so many things.
- 24:44Speaker 17: He included education, he included Royal Commission potentially. But what
- 24:48Speaker 17: are your thoughts on more education in the community about
- 24:52Speaker 17: history and about learning about the Jewish community.
- 24:55Speaker 8: I mean, that's obviously essentral and I've spoken about that
- 24:58Speaker 8: for a long time. I've ridden books for that very purpose.
- 25:02Speaker 8: And Josh is a big supporter of antisemitism education. Also,
- 25:05Speaker 8: Jillian Siegel, the especial envoy, talks about it too. But
- 25:09Speaker 8: to be honest, to talk about that in this moment,
- 25:11Speaker 8: I don't disagree with it at all, but I think
- 25:13Speaker 8: it's almost hollow. It would have been good at the
- 25:17Speaker 8: beginning of this antisemitism crisis when the community, people like
- 25:20Speaker 8: Josh and Jillian Siegel and I were saying we need
- 25:22Speaker 8: better engagement, better education to dispel the myths and the
- 25:25Speaker 8: dehumanization of the Jewish people to prevent this massacre from happening.
- 25:29Speaker 8: That's why we needed it. And to talk about it now,
- 25:32Speaker 8: like with everything with this government, seems to be too
- 25:35Speaker 8: slow and not quite good enough. Right now, we're in
- 25:38Speaker 8: a different place right now, when a national security crisis,
- 25:40Speaker 8: a terrorism crisis, we need to promptly determine how the
- 25:44Speaker 8: failing has occurred of policing and intelligence and government. We
- 25:47Speaker 8: need to determine how many more people are out there
- 25:49Speaker 8: that share this ideology and might have the means to
- 25:51Speaker 8: carry out a similar attack. This threat clears and over.
- 25:54Speaker 8: If we think that there were two individuals who feel
- 25:56Speaker 8: this way and are capable of acting this way, we're
- 25:59Speaker 8: kidding ourselves.
- 26:00Speaker 10: Alex, thank you so much for joining us.
- 26:02Speaker 17: I know there's so many people that are wanting to
- 26:03Speaker 17: talk to you and really sorry to hear so many
- 26:05Speaker 17: of your losses.
- 26:06Speaker 10: Take you care so much.
- 26:07Speaker 8: Thank you.
- 26:08Speaker 10: Denika.
- 26:08Speaker 17: Yes, I just you know, again it's just so hard
- 26:11Speaker 17: to describe, but I mean I saw you here the
- 26:13Speaker 17: other day. I know you've been working so much on
- 26:16Speaker 17: this and it's just you.
- 26:16Speaker 10: Know, this surrealness of it.
- 26:18Speaker 17: But as Alex mentioned, yeah, we just have to all
- 26:21Speaker 17: band together and just you know, so many people morning,
- 26:24Speaker 17: especially with the.
- 26:25Speaker 10: Three funerals that were held today, Denika.
- 26:28Speaker 2: Yeah, the three.
- 26:28Speaker 3: I mean, it's just awful that three funerals today, Just
- 26:32Speaker 3: I mean, it's unfathomable. Janie, thank you so much for
- 26:35Speaker 3: that update. Let's bring in now Australian Jewish Association CEO
- 26:39Speaker 3: Robert Gregory. Robert, thank you for your time. And we
- 26:42Speaker 3: just saw there speaking to Janey. The sheer amount of
- 26:45Speaker 3: flowers that have been laid. People are coming there paying tributes.
- 26:50Speaker 3: The Prime Minister has not been down to the memorial
- 26:52Speaker 3: since Monday morning.
- 26:53Speaker 2: He hasn't attended the funerals.
- 26:55Speaker 3: What's your reaction to that, Because I understand that there's
- 26:58Speaker 3: a lot of anger towards labor right now. Should he
- 27:01Speaker 3: be going back to Bondai?
- 27:04Speaker 16: Look, the Jewish community is furious at labor. Like you said,
- 27:07Speaker 16: any labor minister who shows up is meeting a hostile reaction,
- 27:11Speaker 16: as you'd expect. But he's the Prime minister. It's his job.
- 27:14Speaker 16: He shouldn't be scared of a hostile reaction. He needs
- 27:17Speaker 16: to show up, you know, he needs to confront what's happened.
- 27:21Speaker 16: I couldn't believe that he said he can't legislate or
- 27:25Speaker 16: he doesn't think he can legislate. So if he can't
- 27:27Speaker 16: do it, he needs to step out of the way
- 27:28Speaker 16: and let someone else do it. Right now, he's just obfuscating.
- 27:32Speaker 16: He's saying that it's a worldwide problem. He's the Prime
- 27:35Speaker 16: Minister of Australia. This happened in Australia under his watch.
- 27:39Speaker 16: He needs to take responsibility. He needs to own own
- 27:42Speaker 16: up to it and fix it.
- 27:45Speaker 3: Well absolutely, you know he's dancing around the topic of
- 27:47Speaker 3: radical Islam and now saying he can't legislate out of this.
- 27:51Speaker 3: I mean, there are so many options available for him
- 27:54Speaker 3: and recall Parliament this week for goodness sake and implement
- 27:57Speaker 3: the recommendations by his own special long boy, Jillian Siegel.
- 28:01Speaker 3: It's just extraordinary. I want to ask you about the
- 28:03Speaker 3: police response to this. Chris Mins confirmed to my colleague
- 28:06Speaker 3: Sharry markson last night that only three officers were on
- 28:09Speaker 3: duty at Bondi.
- 28:10Speaker 2: Beach when the Harneker celebration was taking place.
- 28:13Speaker 3: The Jewish community have their own security, but clearly that
- 28:15Speaker 3: only goes so far. How shocked were you when you
- 28:18Speaker 3: heard that three officers were on duty protecting what would
- 28:21Speaker 3: have been a high risk event with one thousand people
- 28:24Speaker 3: in attendance.
- 28:26Speaker 16: I can't believe it, and the Jewish community were grateful
- 28:29Speaker 16: for the bravery of We know there are police that
- 28:31Speaker 16: are injured and our thoughts are with them. But whoever
- 28:34Speaker 16: in management made this decision to have so few police
- 28:37Speaker 16: resources for a thousand people, knowing the international climate, it's
- 28:42Speaker 16: just crazy. The Jewish community has its own security and
- 28:46Speaker 16: they can be armed at synagogues in buildings, but they're
- 28:48Speaker 16: not allowed to carry guns in places like Bondo Beach.
- 28:51Speaker 16: And I think we're hearing from the government they're trying
- 28:54Speaker 16: to deflect and say gun laws need to be tightened.
- 28:56Speaker 16: If anything, we need to ensure that at these type
- 28:59Speaker 16: of events that the community is able to be protected.
- 29:02Speaker 16: If the police can't deploy enough resources, then the community
- 29:05Speaker 16: needs to be able to have armed protectors to protect
- 29:08Speaker 16: them to I mean, we saw the bravery of civilians.
- 29:11Speaker 16: We saw civilians attempt to disarm the government and the
- 29:15Speaker 16: alleged government with the bare hands, multiple civilians. Imagine if
- 29:19Speaker 16: we'd had just one or two armed guards there, it
- 29:21Speaker 16: would have been such a different response.
- 29:24Speaker 2: Yeah, look, it would have been.
- 29:25Speaker 3: And as we've been reporting this afternoon, one of the
- 29:28Speaker 3: alleged government Navin Akram, has just been charged. Robert Gregory,
- 29:32Speaker 3: we have to leave it there. Thank you very much
- 29:34Speaker 3: for joining me on the show. Really appreciate it. As
- 29:37Speaker 3: you can hear, I mean, the anger in the community
- 29:39Speaker 3: is palpable, and the Prime Minister still hasn't made that
- 29:42Speaker 3: journey back to Bondai.
- 29:43Speaker 2: Not good enough. Stay with us after the break.
- 29:46Speaker 3: Israel's Deputy Foreign Minister Sharon Haskell will join me. That's next.
- 29:53Speaker 3: Welcome back if you are just joining us. Breaking news
- 29:55Speaker 3: in the last half hour. The alleged Bondi gunman has
- 29:58Speaker 3: this afternoon been charged with fifty nine offenses, including fifteen
- 30:03Speaker 3: counts of murder, one count of committing a terrorist act,
- 30:07Speaker 3: one count of discharging a firearm in public, one count
- 30:10Speaker 3: of causing a public display of a prohibited terrrist symbol,
- 30:14Speaker 3: one count of placing an explosive in or near a
- 30:17Speaker 3: building with intent to cause harm, forty counts of wounding
- 30:21Speaker 3: with intent to murder.
- 30:22Speaker 2: And we'll have more on that throughout the program.
- 30:25Speaker 3: Let's bring in Israel's Deputy Foreign Minister Sharen Haskell. Now,
- 30:29Speaker 3: thank you very much for joining us this evening. What
- 30:33Speaker 3: has the response been in Israel to this massacre.
- 30:38Speaker 18: Well, the entire country is mourning together with a Jewish community.
- 30:44Speaker 18: We're absolutely shattered and heartbroken. I mean, this is also
- 30:49Speaker 18: not just a national event where this is part of
- 30:53Speaker 18: the community, part of the family. You know, many people
- 30:57Speaker 18: here in Israel have relatives and friends who've last loved ones,
- 31:02Speaker 18: who loved ones were injured. For me personally, this is
- 31:06Speaker 18: very personal. Look, I lived in Sydney for six years.
- 31:09Speaker 18: This was my community. I went to the Khabbad events.
- 31:12Speaker 18: I used to serve on the waves in Bondai Beach
- 31:15Speaker 18: hundreds of times. It is very personal, absolutely heartbreaking and
- 31:21Speaker 18: also at the same time infuriating. We're angry, We're really
- 31:26Speaker 18: really angry because you know, blood was spilt and it
- 31:31Speaker 18: could have been prevented. There's things that could have been
- 31:35Speaker 18: done to at least try to prevent it. And we've
- 31:37Speaker 18: been warning about it for two whole years. Two whole
- 31:41Speaker 18: years that we've been warning the government, and unfortunately they
- 31:44Speaker 18: were not listening.
- 31:47Speaker 3: The warning signs have been flashing with big red lights
- 31:49Speaker 3: for the last two years.
- 31:51Speaker 2: And the saddest part out.
- 31:52Speaker 3: Of all of this, it has culminated in the depths
- 31:55Speaker 3: of fifteen innocent people.
- 31:57Speaker 2: It's unbelievable. In your view, is Australia siph for Jews.
- 32:04Speaker 18: Look, obviously there's there's huge concerns right now, and I
- 32:09Speaker 18: speak to some in the Jewish community who truly feel
- 32:13Speaker 18: not just you know, unsafe and and and scared terrified,
- 32:18Speaker 18: but they feel betrayed. You know, this events, the explosion
- 32:25Speaker 18: of this event has happened because of three main reasons.
- 32:30Speaker 18: One is the explosion of anti Semitism and the lack
- 32:35Speaker 18: of actions that we weren't made to try and prevent
- 32:40Speaker 18: that were the people that were calling for the death
- 32:44Speaker 18: of Jews, like people on the steps of the Opera
- 32:48Speaker 18: House that were chanting to gas the Jews, or people
- 32:50Speaker 18: who were holding proudly terrorist organizations flags, marching in the
- 32:56Speaker 18: streets of Sydney or Melbourne. The attacks on synagogues and daycares,
- 33:02Speaker 18: you know, attacks on Jewish businesses, discrimination at work, and
- 33:07Speaker 18: nothing was done. Even a special envoy to combat antisemitism
- 33:12Speaker 18: that Albanizi appointed. She came up with quite a lot
- 33:17Speaker 18: of actions that needs to be taken to combat antisemitism,
- 33:21Speaker 18: and none were implemented. The second leg that this is
- 33:26Speaker 18: standing on is the rhetoric of the Australian government where
- 33:30Speaker 18: they bought into a lot of the commases propaganda. They
- 33:35Speaker 18: were inflating a lot of the discourse, fueling it with
- 33:40Speaker 18: a lot of you know, propaganda that was demonizing Israel,
- 33:45Speaker 18: that was demonizing Jews, and unfortunately a lot of this
- 33:50Speaker 18: rhetoric has given legitimacy to hurt and a harm Jewish
- 33:56Speaker 18: communities across Australia. The third led is what we've seen
- 34:01Speaker 18: as an increase of activity of extreme and radical persons
- 34:06Speaker 18: and and and groups in Australia. And when we saw
- 34:10Speaker 18: the three of them, we knew it's only a matter
- 34:12Speaker 18: of time and if action is not going to be
- 34:15Speaker 18: taken now, it's gonna end with blood. And it did,
- 34:20Speaker 18: and that's why we're so furious. And I truly understand
- 34:23Speaker 18: the Jewish community who truly feel betrayed.
- 34:26Speaker 3: Yeah, now, look, I couldn't agree more with everything you've said.
- 34:31Speaker 3: The alleged gunmen were inspired by Isis. How big of
- 34:36Speaker 3: a threat does radical Islam posed to Western democracies in
- 34:40Speaker 3: your view?
- 34:41Speaker 18: Oh, it's a massive threat. This is a strategy, you know,
- 34:45Speaker 18: the Muslim Brotherhood, the IRGC, those are just two sources
- 34:48Speaker 18: who produced many active groups that are you know, radicalizing
- 34:56Speaker 18: you know, youth towards the inspiration of ISIS or Ramas
- 35:02Speaker 18: or Chris Bala. There are cells of Chris Bala and
- 35:06Speaker 18: Ramas who are operating also in Australia. There are people
- 35:09Speaker 18: who have immigrated into Australia and part of their strategy,
- 35:13Speaker 18: it's not just military, it's not just terrorists and and
- 35:17Speaker 18: and and and and terrorist activities and killing people, but
- 35:21Speaker 18: it is also a strategy of trying to destabilize Western
- 35:25Speaker 18: democracies who believe in freedom, who believes in democracy, in
- 35:29Speaker 18: women's rights and freedom of expression, and and and and
- 35:32Speaker 18: and equality to minorities, and they are trying to destabilize it.
- 35:36Speaker 18: You know, Al Jazeera is a mouthpiece for the Muslim brotherhood.
- 35:40Speaker 18: We know they've been radicalizing the youth, creating fabrications and
- 35:45Speaker 18: and and and and stories and propaganda online. They are
- 35:48Speaker 18: one of the most popular networks. There are mosques in
- 35:52Speaker 18: Australia with radically moms who are calling, you know, for
- 35:57Speaker 18: killing of Zionists, for killing of Jews. You know, there
- 36:03Speaker 18: is an activity in Australia. It has to be taken,
- 36:07Speaker 18: I think, more seriously, more harshly.
- 36:10Speaker 3: Yeah, look, you're right, it's completely incompatible with our values
- 36:14Speaker 3: and our way of life. That is the reality, and
- 36:17Speaker 3: we have to confront it head on. We can't be
- 36:19Speaker 3: scared to talk about it. It has to be confronted
- 36:21Speaker 3: head on. Sharen haschool. We have to leave it there.
- 36:23Speaker 3: It's been great to catch up. Thank you so much
- 36:25Speaker 3: for joining me on the show. Really appreciate it. We
- 36:28Speaker 3: are going to take a quick break. Coming up, the
- 36:30Speaker 3: Shadow Education Minister Julian Lisa will join me.
- 36:32Speaker 2: That's next. Welcome back.
- 36:37Speaker 3: Let's bring in the Shadow Education Minister Julian Lisa. Now, Julian,
- 36:41Speaker 3: thank you very much for joining me. I noticed that
- 36:43Speaker 3: you've got a sticker. You're wearing a sticker right now
- 36:45Speaker 3: that says Matilda, obviously in honor of little ten year
- 36:49Speaker 3: old Matilda, one of the tragic victims. And it's been
- 36:51Speaker 3: another hard day for the community. Three funerals. I know
- 36:54Speaker 3: that you were at the funeral for Rabbi Eli Schlanger.
- 36:58Speaker 2: Take us through the day, well.
- 37:00Speaker 19: I started at Bondai early in the morning, just greeting
- 37:05Speaker 19: people as they went out to do a memorial swim
- 37:08Speaker 19: and spoke to people. I spoke to some of the
- 37:10Speaker 19: media that were there, and that just spent my morning
- 37:13Speaker 19: talking to people as they were laying flowers or as
- 37:15Speaker 19: they were walking around Bondai, Rabbis laying to fill and
- 37:20Speaker 19: putting the little boxes on the people's heads and arms
- 37:23Speaker 19: with prayers.
- 37:24Speaker 5: People mourning.
- 37:25Speaker 19: And then I went to Rabbi Shanger's funeral. It was
- 37:30Speaker 19: such an affecting moment being there. I mean, he was
- 37:34Speaker 19: so loved in the Jewish community. He had done so much.
- 37:37Speaker 19: He was one of those sort of unassuming people who
- 37:41Speaker 19: doesn't seek the limelight but just makes the community run.
- 37:45Speaker 19: And so many people spoke of his generosity of spirit,
- 37:50Speaker 19: the way he encouraged people, his work with the corrective services,
- 37:54Speaker 19: you know, in his prison ministry. Just an extraordinary human
- 37:59Speaker 19: being that we've lost, and a father to young children,
- 38:01Speaker 19: the youngest are only two months old, who will never
- 38:04Speaker 19: know their father. That is just a tragedy and it
- 38:08Speaker 19: speaks to the enormous humanity of what we've seen. And
- 38:10Speaker 19: then I returned to the memorial outside the outside the pavilion,
- 38:17Speaker 19: and there I saw a couple of ladies who had
- 38:20Speaker 19: made these stickers about Matilda, and we put up some
- 38:25Speaker 19: pictures of Matilda and Matilda's parents were there, I meant,
- 38:28Speaker 19: the cousins earlier today, and very very emotional for them.
- 38:31Speaker 19: I mean, you know, imagine losing a ten year old child.
- 38:35Speaker 19: No one should have to bury their child. It is
- 38:38Speaker 19: the reversal of the natural order of things, and yet
- 38:41Speaker 19: that's what we are seeing. We're seeing families without fathers,
- 38:46Speaker 19: parents burying children. That is the human face of the
- 38:49Speaker 19: tragedy of what we saw on Sunday night.
- 38:53Speaker 3: Look, it's just unfathomable, Julian, that there really is no
- 38:57Speaker 3: words about parents having to bury their child and the
- 39:00Speaker 3: rest of the victims.
- 39:01Speaker 2: I mean, it's just it's just awful.
- 39:05Speaker 3: Look, let's talk more broadly now about anti Semitism. Penny
- 39:09Speaker 3: Wong today made this concession that the alban Ezy government
- 39:12Speaker 3: must do more to combat it. She's two years too late.
- 39:16Speaker 3: Here was the Prime Minister on that today. Have a listen.
- 39:19Speaker 9: I say that the battle against any Semitism has been
- 39:24Speaker 9: around for a long period of time. We have called
- 39:27Speaker 9: out and will continue to call out. We'll work with
- 39:29Speaker 9: the community. I had discussions with community leaders last night.
- 39:35Speaker 9: We'll do whatever it's necessary to work with the community
- 39:39Speaker 9: to stamp out the scourge of any Semitism.
- 39:43Speaker 2: Julian, he hasn't acted on anti semitism. That's the reality.
- 39:47Speaker 3: He hasn't gone back to the Bondai Memorial since Monday morning.
- 39:50Speaker 3: He hasn't recalled parliament to implement Jillian Siegel's recommendations, says
- 39:55Speaker 3: it's too hard to legislate against radical Islam.
- 39:58Speaker 2: So what is this prime minister doing.
- 40:01Speaker 19: Well, that's a good question, Danika, that the Jewish community
- 40:03Speaker 19: cannot live here on.
- 40:04Speaker 16: The Prime minister's words alone.
- 40:06Speaker 19: The Prime minister's words give no comfort to anyone when
- 40:10Speaker 19: he's had a report for six months that he has
- 40:12Speaker 19: taken no action. People don't want words. The time for
- 40:15Speaker 19: talk is over, it's long over. We want to see
- 40:19Speaker 19: the Prime Minister implement Jillian Siegull's report in full. That's
- 40:22Speaker 19: what he should have done six months ago, two and
- 40:25Speaker 19: a half years ago. He should have taken the threats
- 40:27Speaker 19: to Australia far more seriously. And so what have we seen.
- 40:31Speaker 19: First they came for the Opera House, then they came
- 40:33Speaker 19: for the Harbor Bridge, and on Sunday they came for Bondai,
- 40:37Speaker 19: the third most significant icon in the city of Sydney.
- 40:41Speaker 19: And they've turned a place that has been noted as
- 40:44Speaker 19: a place of freedom and family and a pleasure into
- 40:48Speaker 19: a place of massacre. That's what's happened because of the
- 40:51Speaker 19: inaction of the government. The government needs to take action.
- 40:55Speaker 19: It has a roadmap there. Why they didn't implement this
- 40:58Speaker 19: six months ago beggest belief, but it is. It is
- 41:03Speaker 19: a species of the way in which the government has
- 41:05Speaker 19: approached this whole area that they have had to be dragged,
- 41:10Speaker 19: kicking and screaming to do anything to combat anti Semitism.
- 41:13Speaker 19: For the last two years, they haven't been proactive well
- 41:15Speaker 19: enough enough. It's time to implement the report today.
- 41:19Speaker 3: Look, I couldn't agree more. We're almost out of time,
- 41:21Speaker 3: but I just want to quickly ask you. Should the
- 41:23Speaker 3: Prime Minister be going back to Bondai to the memorial.
- 41:27Speaker 19: Absolutely. Look, there's no substitute from actually hearing from Jewish
- 41:31Speaker 19: Australians and seeing how they are feeling. I don't think
- 41:34Speaker 19: it'll be a pleasant experience for the Prime Minister, but
- 41:36Speaker 19: he shouldn't shirk the responsibility that he has as the
- 41:39Speaker 19: national leader to look people in the eye, to hear
- 41:43Speaker 19: from them, to understand their pain, and to take action.
- 41:46Speaker 19: Maybe hearing from people about their pain directly will finally
- 41:51Speaker 19: get this Prime Minister to act.
- 41:53Speaker 2: Yeah, and it takes a leader.
- 41:55Speaker 3: You've got to you know, you might be met with
- 41:57Speaker 3: a bad reception, but it's about having the current to
- 42:00Speaker 3: go down there and listen to the grieving people. Listen
- 42:03Speaker 3: to grieving families and say, okay, time now.
- 42:07Speaker 2: Stop with the words.
- 42:08Speaker 3: The action is now and he's yet to do that. Julian, Lisa,
- 42:11Speaker 3: we have to leave it there. I know it's been
- 42:13Speaker 3: a very difficult week for you and your community. So
- 42:15Speaker 3: I really appreciate you joining me. Thank you so much.
- 42:17Speaker 3: Appreciate it. Coming up after the break, ABC journalist Laura
- 42:21Speaker 3: Tingle claims the Bondi attack was not motivated by religion.
- 42:25Speaker 3: That are more with my panel next, welcome back. Let's
- 42:31Speaker 3: bring it in our panel now, Sky News contributor James
- 42:33Speaker 3: Bolt and the JJ podcast co host Jamie Johnson.
- 42:36Speaker 2: Hight to both of you. Thanks very much for joining
- 42:38Speaker 2: me on the show.
- 42:38Speaker 3: I want to start over at the ABC, where journalist
- 42:41Speaker 3: Laura Tingle has claimed that the Bondai attack on Jews
- 42:44Speaker 3: was not motivated by religion. Have a listen, Absolutely a
- 42:49Speaker 3: radicalized these words targeting Jews.
- 42:52Speaker 11: It is anti Semitic, but we are ascribing all sorts
- 42:55Speaker 11: of things, right.
- 42:55Speaker 12: Yeah, their actions are not based on their religion.
- 43:00Speaker 3: Look, this is extraordinary, James. The attack was targeted against Jews.
- 43:05Speaker 3: An ISIS flag was found on the car.
- 43:07Speaker 2: They were allegedly motivated by isis what is the ABC hiding?
- 43:12Speaker 20: It's Look, I'll be as fair as I can possibly
- 43:15Speaker 20: be to Laura and say that what she's trying to
- 43:17Speaker 20: say is that in the roots of Islam is not
- 43:19Speaker 20: something that can possibly condone what we saw on Sunday.
- 43:22Speaker 20: But I mean to be so cavalier in those comments
- 43:27Speaker 20: and to deny reality. I know this is all alleged now,
- 43:31Speaker 20: and I know we have to say the police are
- 43:33Speaker 20: alleging that the NISUS flag was at the car, But
- 43:35Speaker 20: to so definitively say that religion wasn't a something that
- 43:39Speaker 20: was impacting here is just ridiculous. And it's time and
- 43:43Speaker 20: time again we see ABC people say statements. I mean,
- 43:47Speaker 20: Laura Tingle has formed. She once called Australia racist country,
- 43:50Speaker 20: and you just go there has to be some sort
- 43:53Speaker 20: of repercussion internally within the ABC that you can't keep
- 43:56Speaker 20: saying these outlandish statements and supposedly neutral, always fair, taxpayer
- 44:03Speaker 20: funded organization without repercussions for this stuff like that.
- 44:07Speaker 3: No, I completely agree, You're right. I forgot about the
- 44:09Speaker 3: Australia as a racist comment. That's a really good point.
- 44:12Speaker 3: What is the ABC hiding, Jamie.
- 44:15Speaker 2: It's unbelievable.
- 44:16Speaker 1: You know, since Jamie and I started this podcast in
- 44:18Speaker 1: an online social media channel, we have an ear to
- 44:21Speaker 1: the ground more than ever before. And the publica outraged
- 44:24Speaker 1: that our mass media and our politicians don't call this
- 44:28Speaker 1: for what it is. So, you know, as you said,
- 44:32Speaker 1: an isis flag, Islamic terrorism. This was an Islamic terrorist attack.
- 44:36Speaker 1: It doesn't matter if there were two of them or
- 44:38Speaker 1: fifty of them. We have to say allege now absolutely
- 44:41Speaker 1: one charge. Yeah, yes, So I think that the public
- 44:45Speaker 1: are fed up with this not being called out for
- 44:48Speaker 1: what it is. You know, we understand that all Muslims
- 44:51Speaker 1: aren't bad. We understand that all Germans weren't Nazis, but
- 44:55Speaker 1: there are a small percentage of them that are radicals
- 44:58Speaker 1: and it has to stop, has to stop.
- 45:01Speaker 3: But this is what we're talking about because the majority
- 45:02Speaker 3: of Muslims live peacefully in this country and absolutely as
- 45:05Speaker 3: mortified and horrified as we all are about what's happened,
- 45:08Speaker 3: But we are talking about a pocket of radical Islam
- 45:12Speaker 3: and that is the problem and we have to confront
- 45:14Speaker 3: it head on. And it takes both sides of politics
- 45:16Speaker 3: to have the guts and the courage to take this
- 45:18Speaker 3: head on, let's talk about Anthony Abernese's failures. James hasn't
- 45:22Speaker 3: gone back to the Bondy memorial. Okay, you know what,
- 45:25Speaker 3: he will probably be met with a bad reception, But
- 45:28Speaker 3: shouldn't Alder confront it head on.
- 45:31Speaker 20: I just think Anthony Aberesi and he's got no one
- 45:33Speaker 20: but himself to blame, but he actually can't go to
- 45:37Speaker 20: that memorial because people are going to brew him. I mean,
- 45:41Speaker 20: rightly or wrongly. Scott Morrison not having his handshaken by
- 45:44Speaker 20: those firefighters became such a defining moment of his prime
- 45:47Speaker 20: minister year. People really just go that was the guy
- 45:50Speaker 20: that said I can't hold a host. Whatever happens when
- 45:53Speaker 20: Anthony Alberanesi next finds himself around a crowd of Jewish
- 45:56Speaker 20: people will defined I think at least this year, in
- 45:59Speaker 20: his prime ministers year, and probably his entire prime ministership,
- 46:02Speaker 20: I think it'd be such an ugly reaction. You think
- 46:04Speaker 20: this morning there was the heckler on Sky News at
- 46:07Speaker 20: Richard Miles, our defense minister. People are also heckling Tony
- 46:11Speaker 20: Burke who went to the memorial under the cover of darkness.
- 46:13Speaker 20: Now you need to have a pretty good idea of
- 46:15Speaker 20: Australian politics. To be able to identify Richard Miles and
- 46:18Speaker 20: also Tony Burke at nighttime. You don't for Anthony albaneasy.
- 46:21Speaker 20: I think everyone at that vigil is going to know
- 46:23Speaker 20: exactly who he is and say exactly what they want
- 46:25Speaker 20: to say, and he can't have that.
- 46:27Speaker 13: He should.
- 46:27Speaker 20: He should be able to go down to that vigil.
- 46:29Speaker 20: He should be able to put a reassuring hand around
- 46:31Speaker 20: people that are grieving. Is the right thing to do
- 46:33Speaker 20: it for a leader. You think of how strong that
- 46:35Speaker 20: image would be. But he can't do it. And he's
- 46:38Speaker 20: got no one but himself to blame for that.
- 46:40Speaker 2: He's got nobody but himself to do it. But he
- 46:42Speaker 2: needs to tackle it head on.
- 46:43Speaker 3: I mean, you know John Howard did the same thing
- 46:46Speaker 3: when he implemented the gun laws and the wake of
- 46:48Speaker 3: Port Arthur. You know he did the exact same thing.
- 46:51Speaker 3: He went and spoke out to farmers who were very,
- 46:53Speaker 3: very angry. It takes guts, it takes courage. That's what
- 46:56Speaker 3: you do when you're a leader. Jamie, one hundred percent.
- 46:58Speaker 3: You literally took the words out of my mouth.
- 47:00Speaker 1: In nineteen ninety six, John Howard introduced the most far
- 47:03Speaker 1: reaching gun law reforms Australia had ever seen, and Coalition
- 47:06Speaker 1: MPs were so nervous about losing their seats and some did,
- 47:10Speaker 1: but it took leadership to put in place implement not
- 47:14Speaker 1: just words Albin easy, implement change. And so I just
- 47:18Speaker 1: think that absolutely shows that he's been spineless. And Tony Burke,
- 47:22Speaker 1: I mean, I don't think he should be the Home
- 47:24Speaker 1: Affairs Minister. He's compromised. There's a conflict of interest when
- 47:30Speaker 1: he wants to represent his constituents and more than twenty
- 47:33Speaker 1: five percent of his seat have claimed that they follow Islam.
- 47:37Speaker 2: So I just think changes have to be made and
- 47:40Speaker 2: now yet No, I'm completely with you.
- 47:43Speaker 3: Over at Adelaide Oval today they had to ramp up
- 47:45Speaker 3: security for the third ASHES test in the wake of
- 47:47Speaker 3: the attack.
- 47:48Speaker 2: Have listened to the tribute today.
- 47:51Speaker 21: After the tragic events at Bondai Beach last Sunday evening,
- 47:56Speaker 21: we come together as nations to pay our respects to
- 47:59Speaker 21: all those who lost their lives and offer our condolences
- 48:03Speaker 21: to their families, their friends and to the Jewish community.
- 48:08Speaker 3: Yeah, we're almost out of time, but James, you know,
- 48:10Speaker 3: I was thinking it's actually sad. Now that's got to
- 48:12Speaker 3: be a ramp up of security everywhere at these events.
- 48:16Speaker 20: This is the Scar tissue. This is the phase of
- 48:18Speaker 20: Australia that's going to be changing. I mean that security
- 48:21Speaker 20: measure it's for the crowd as much it as it
- 48:23Speaker 20: is for security. If people need to feel safe right now,
- 48:25Speaker 20: and unfortunately this is the Australia we live in.
- 48:27Speaker 3: And that's the saddest part. And there's probably got to
- 48:29Speaker 3: be more safety measures to come. That is the harsh
- 48:32Speaker 3: reality rights the Scar tissue. It's a very good point.
- 48:34Speaker 3: We've got to leave it there, Jamie Johnson, James Bulkwood,
- 48:36Speaker 3: to have you both on. Thank you very much for
- 48:38Speaker 3: joining me, and thank you so much for your company
- 48:40Speaker 3: this evening.
- 48:41Speaker 2: I'll be back.
- 48:41Speaker 3: Again tomorrow night, but do stay with us. Coming up
- 48:44Speaker 3: right now is Peter Kredlin. Good Night,
