- 0:40Welcome back to a hamster with a blunt penknife the Doctor Who
- 0:43commentary podcast. I am your host Jim Allen beige
- 0:49and today, I'm talking with mr. Joe Ford.
- 0:53How are you? Joe?
- 0:54Hey, I'm very excited to be a guest here on Jim Allenby
- 0:57presents and what a sexy intro that was well, I can do sexy
- 1:03voices from time, I believe you. Now it's wonderful to be here.
- 1:11Thank you for having me. Welcome is.
- 1:13So it's nice to have you on board.
- 1:15Mmm. So what story we're going to be
- 1:18watching today? Well I thought coming on to your
- 1:21podcast so you were going to say Joe, I'm going to direct you to
- 1:24a fantastic season of Doctor Who and watch an absolute highlight.
- 1:29And then you said, Joe, you better watch out from Series 7
- 1:31of the new series I'm going to. Yeah I'm going to ask you to
- 1:36find a little gem in a otherwise season full of rocks.
- 1:44Do you think it's all worthless apart from this step?
- 1:48No, it's not. It's not, and it's one of those
- 1:53Seasons series. Sorry.
- 1:56And I will, you know, I will discuss probably as we go about
- 2:01the era in general, but I think it's unfortunate that this
- 2:07series is, was split in half. I remember at the time, a lot of
- 2:13people Discussing discussing it on certain forums about how this
- 2:18is unacceptable. This should be the anniversary
- 2:21year and we should be getting a full series of Doctor Who and
- 2:24you know, and I didn't agree with that but I wasn't keen on
- 2:31them splitting the series up as it is it kind of works because
- 2:37it feels very different from. You know the part 2 feels very
- 2:41different from part, 1 of see. Seven.
- 2:46And then you've got this little story in the middle of it all,
- 2:50which is called the snowmen, which was the Christmas special.
- 2:54Do you think? I think it damages Serious Six.
- 2:58The splits evens far more serious 6 is like a it's trying
- 3:01to tell a cohesive story. That's all good.
- 3:03Song Story. Yeah.
- 3:05Splitting it into means it loses any sense of momentum or
- 3:09intimate impetus. Yes, her back with a river song
- 3:12story. Then you have all these
- 3:13Standalone. So Then you have the River Song
- 3:15finale, it's just well as here, you've got, Amy, and Rory, sort
- 3:20of protracted departure story with a little Cameo from Jenna
- 3:25Coleman in Asylum for the Daleks then exists.
- 3:29Bridging. The two, with the new Tardis set
- 3:31and new companion. Yes.
- 3:34And then obviously the Clara Arc in the second half of the
- 3:36Season. Yeah, it kind of works a bit
- 3:38better. I think works better.
- 3:39It does work better. Do you can't do you consider
- 3:43this particular Of Series 7. I don't believe that
- 3:48production-wise they consider its part Series 7 or do you
- 3:51consider it a Christmas special shoved in the middle of it?
- 3:55All I consider as Pastor is 7 is such as vital part of the year.
- 4:01I said yeah, I'll let you into a little secret.
- 4:03Yeah, of course, there are drops.
- 4:05Another podcast button will not very popular around these parts
- 4:09but I actually think Series 7 a in particular dinosaurs.
- 4:14The spaceship the power 3, a town called mercy and Angels,
- 4:17Take Manhattan. And the snowmen, which I'm
- 4:19lumping in with that, that might be my favorite run and Moffitt
- 4:22episodes. Really are?
- 4:24They serious 7B where I think it doesn't just come off the rails.
- 4:29We it plummets down a mountain because, yeah, we are.
- 4:33We talking Matt Smith era, we talking, the entirety of the
- 4:37mafia In a successive episodes that I right, okay, the mafia
- 4:44era, I think there's like a serious.
- 4:48A is probably my favorite Muffet season.
- 4:50I guess that's not a popular opinion.
- 4:53I think there are stronger episodes.
- 4:54Don't read about but sort of in a row.
- 4:57Nothing. That's that's five episodes in a
- 4:59row and nowhere else in muffins time.
- 5:01Do you get five? A so by the time, the snowmen
- 5:03here and I really liked it, I was like, well, I'm a real hear
- 5:07what they bring on series 7B. Yeah, I remember I mean yeah.
- 5:12I'm you know I'm bored with you that it's part of Series 7.
- 5:17It is part of Series 7. You can't watch it.
- 5:19You can't miss it. I remember watching.
- 5:23You K gold, or it might have been after UK goal became,
- 5:26whatever it became, watch your W or whatever.
- 5:29And they were doing, they were showing Doctor Who all knew, who
- 5:32from the start, except they weren't showing the specials,
- 5:36the Christmas specials, and they showed Series 7.
- 5:39On and skip the snowmen. So it went straight from Angels,
- 5:44Take Manhattan to the bells of st.
- 5:46John. And I was like, what the hell
- 5:47are you playing at? It's, it's an integral part of
- 5:50the, of the ongoing storyline. You know, you, you could
- 5:55probably cut the other specials out.
- 5:56Mmm, maybe. But put, this is an integral
- 6:02part of the, the series, and it's needed.
- 6:05Most been very disappointing to do for anyone who wondered where
- 6:08David Tennant went. In that case actually video,
- 6:10special design, one minute he was on Bowery base saying it's
- 6:15nominal Victorious. The next minute, he's Matt Smith
- 6:18was yeah I believe they jumped from The Parting of the ways to
- 6:23New Earth. It skipped Christmas Invasion.
- 6:25Like what am I gonna see these? Broad obviously they're not fans
- 6:32get what you're given. All right.
- 6:36Yeah, it's em. Yeah, I when I first watched it,
- 6:41I really enjoyed it but at the time I was swept up in the whole
- 6:48Matt Smith era. Anyway, it was for me, it was at
- 6:52the time I it was the best doctor.
- 6:54Who would ever been? I was I was I didn't say I was
- 7:01happy when tenant went but I kind of had enough of him by the
- 7:04time that he did go. And I was blown away by Matt
- 7:08Smith. Series 5 was fantastic.
- 7:12I liked the Cinematic quality of Series 6 and it kind of
- 7:18continued into Series 7 and I enjoyed it.
- 7:23I enjoyed these entire run. It's only to say that in an
- 7:29apologetic way. You're looking at me.
- 7:32You are allowed to enjoy this era and I still do Do however,
- 7:39as time has gone on, it's I enjoy it.
- 7:43Less and less each time I watch it.
- 7:45Why is that? It's hard to pin it down.
- 7:50There are certain things that crop up in it.
- 7:56I think I've been, I've been watching some real salty stuff
- 8:03with a, with a friend who's never watched Doctor Who before,
- 8:08and we're going through it very slowly.
- 8:10We've only just finished series one and we've watched the
- 8:14Christmas Invasion and seeing it through her eyes eats.
- 8:19Its she enjoys it immensely and it I can see that it appeals to
- 8:25somebody. he's a non-fan and I I think that What happened?
- 8:34When Moffat took over, is Doctor Who when it came back written by
- 8:39Russell, it was written for a family audience, but I think
- 8:44when it changed hands to Moffat, it became it was written for
- 8:49more sci-fi fans. It was written for fans, agree.
- 8:53And I think that it's going to be interesting when we, when we
- 8:57do get to that point where we switch from tenant to, to Matt
- 9:00Smith as to what she thinks. So that But I do feel like it
- 9:06the I think it was a big misstep.
- 9:09I feel it. It lost its way by doing that.
- 9:14I've heard the argument that Rusty Davis is writing,
- 9:18fantastic television, and Steven Moffat is right in fantastic,
- 9:24Doctor Who so he's Rusty, Davis is gearing his television, a
- 9:28populist audience, everybody, the whole family, and everybody,
- 9:33Do you like big brother? We'll watch this.
- 9:35We've got big brother in it, you know.
- 9:37Yeah. You want songs.
- 9:38Fire will do what every Christmas?
- 9:39Yeah and then Moffat comes in and I think he's really
- 9:44appealing to Doctor Who fans come sort of Hell been when
- 9:48we're doing ho episodes on Gallifrey and you know down in
- 9:52The Matrix and all this like what the fuck is a member of the
- 9:55general audience going to think about like what you saw this?
- 9:58Yeah I mean you know it's Heaven sense is one My all-time
- 10:05favorite Doctor, Who stories. It's probably right up there at
- 10:08the top often between that and the curse of fenric apart
- 10:13decide, which is my favourite Doctor Who story between those
- 10:16two. However, I could not imagine
- 10:19sitting down with my mom to watch heaven sent.
- 10:23It should be like, well why is it just wander around this
- 10:25castle for an hour since Lauren? Yeah, but I could easily imagine
- 10:30a sitting down with me to watch tooth and Claw or You know.
- 10:34Yeah cream time when Victoria and a werewolf running around
- 10:37the house. Amazing.
- 10:38Yeah. And I kind of, you know, and I
- 10:42think that and I just have to say that I am a, I'm a huge
- 10:49chip. No fan Jody fan.
- 10:51It's got you know, I've got my reservations over a few things
- 10:53but I'm a massive fan of that era and I think I do feel like
- 10:58Chris chibnall try to recapture that little bit appealing to you
- 11:03to the family. Audience a little bit more
- 11:05before he kind of just threw that out.
- 11:08And and went a little bit more towards writing for Doctor Who
- 11:11fans again, which I AB still absolutely loved.
- 11:15So it'd be interesting to see. I'm hoping Russell goes back to
- 11:20that format of writing for right thing for families again, and
- 11:24writing for the general public, as much as certain sections of
- 11:29Doctor Who fans don't want that. You know, I've I'm not as I've
- 11:34had the reverse Journey with Steven Moffat because that is
- 11:37still widely his favorite era of the new series.
- 11:41Matt Smith is still my least favorite doctor.
- 11:44And I do think there are an incredible amount of missteps
- 11:48along the way bar I threw doing hamster, I've had a lot of
- 11:54people come on and sort of tell me where I'm going wrong and
- 11:59explaining what they do Love About It episodes that I've
- 12:03written off. For like deep breath and things
- 12:05like that. I found sort of a renewed
- 12:07appreciation. For if it's not always for me
- 12:11then I kind of understand. Yeah.
- 12:14That's why it's for other people.
- 12:15Yeah I also think as well you it's weird when a show runner
- 12:20goes out and a new one comes in. Yeah.
- 12:22Give it a little time. If there were things you didn't
- 12:25like about that previous show runner when the new stuff is
- 12:28coming out suddenly you start appreciating things from the old
- 12:31showrunner. But perhaps you were going, oh
- 12:33we're doing This again. Yeah.
- 12:35So some of that sort of labyrinthine plotting the crazy
- 12:39amount of ideas that Moffat has some of the Whittier lines that
- 12:44you throws in even some of the character stuff which I don't
- 12:47think I was seeing at the time I'm seeing a lot more of now.
- 12:50So But I do think this was the period where he struggled the
- 12:56most like he says during the series 7 I was off the boil.
- 13:00I was doing Sherlock at the same time and I couldn't give Eva
- 13:04show the love they deserve and you can't you can't run two
- 13:08massive shows like that. Now you can't primarily writing.
- 13:11Yeah you can you can tell as well you know it kind of feels
- 13:15very thin some of the storylines.
- 13:18I mean oh yeah I was thinking about this the other day and the
- 13:21story. I'm for this is really basic,
- 13:23really it's more character and it because while I was watching
- 13:27I was thinking what actually is the storyline because I'm just
- 13:29watching and I enjoyed the story but I was just thinking I'm just
- 13:33watching set pieces and character things here.
- 13:36You know what Steven Moffat supposed to do know?
- 13:41And I agree and I was like, I got to the end and I'm like,
- 13:43okay, so the whole great intelligence thing.
- 13:46It wasn't really was it going somewhere like did it goes.
- 13:49And I know they're sort of they head off into, was it?
- 13:52Name of the doctor of know it's name is Doctor when they're
- 13:55back. Yeah no no, he's back in bells
- 13:58of Saint. John, isn't he?
- 13:59The greatest obstacles? Yeah.
- 14:01The season, doesn't it? Yeah.
- 14:03And it tries to do the same thing again because in this,
- 14:05you've got Simeon as a Young Man meeting the great intelligence
- 14:09and then they do that bit at the end where he's almost sort of
- 14:11regressing but then they do it again with Celia.
- 14:13Imrie the next episode laughing us, even more effective.
- 14:17Yeah, she's a better. But you know, With the Snowman.
- 14:25All atmosphere alone. I think this is gold.
- 14:30Oh yeah. And if there's one thing that
- 14:32Moffat does better than any of the other showrunners, it's
- 14:35Christmas, mmm-hmm he gets the tone of Christmas, he gets the
- 14:41ambience of Christmas and even our, we can overdo it terribly
- 14:45in stuff like doctor the Widow and the Wardrobe, he kind of
- 14:48gets what gets what it's about family and being together when
- 14:52he gets it, right? I think it's absolutely
- 14:55brilliant. Now some people would say that's
- 14:56Christmas Carol. I'll say it's this and last
- 15:00Christmas which are my two favorites for.
- 15:04Yeah. I would say Christmas Carol and
- 15:06last Christmas for me would be my favorite spot.
- 15:09This is a close, this is three out of you know, this would this
- 15:13would be my third in my top three.
- 15:15I mean I did I did another Pockets.
- 15:17I did Runaway Bride recently, which I think is a hugely
- 15:21entertaining episode but a Especially iron here a few trees
- 15:28and Fly ball balls, but that's the way it should.
- 15:32This is drenched in Christmas, isn't it?
- 15:34Is, it is, it's it's, it is Christmas, isn't it?
- 15:38It's, you know, I, I kind of felt a little bit wrong for
- 15:42watching it, re-watching it this week, because I should be
- 15:47putting this on, on the, on Christmas day.
- 15:48Really, not now, you know, so, Victoria order as well, isn't
- 15:52it? And all of that, Oliver Twist.
- 15:55You've got the you know the Buxom made the bar wench the guy
- 15:59said. Yeah, he know.
- 16:01He absolutely knows what to lean on a quick.
- 16:03Let's yeah. Well, I'm not gonna Lead You
- 16:10astray episode, hey, and just making sure I'm cute up here.
- 16:16So, We will go into it in 5 4 3 2 1, go.
- 16:29Music playing mine was going for a moment.
- 16:34They still have a fantastic school though.
- 16:35I thought, right from the off, those sort of sinister Bells
- 16:39going as that snow is coming down.
- 16:40Yeah, well I think I think this point I mean that looks
- 16:43beautiful, doesn't it that wide shot of the garden?
- 16:46It just looks like a it looks filming but Yeah, it's no longer
- 16:55polystyrene up. The nose of Tom Baker.
- 16:57In sees the Doom is it? No close up shot on Tom?
- 17:04No, this is this is you know, talking about it music as well.
- 17:07This is I feel at this point. Maria Maria goals really settled
- 17:11into into his role that rolled into his music.
- 17:18It's not overpowering. It's not too bombastic, it fits.
- 17:24The scenes it just works and yeah you're right.
- 17:28It's a it's a fantastic score. I do wonder if his most
- 17:34memorable music comes in Rusty Davis's time.
- 17:36That's only because I've heard so much of it because it's
- 17:39locked. It's older its most consistently
- 17:42good. Music is probably Matt Smith's
- 17:43time. Yes.
- 17:45Yeah. And what do you think of saying
- 17:48McKellen? Voicing his great thousands, it
- 17:53is a fact, you know, Jim that Steven Moffat can bring in these
- 17:58phenomenal guest actors. And I've had many people come at
- 18:00me, say, well, what would you rather just have some dreary
- 18:02person doing these roles in these bit Parts.
- 18:05He brings in his great actors and it gives them I mean I
- 18:08obviously I mean IMA kind of probably went.
- 18:09Well I'm just going to do a voice Parts.
- 18:11O'Reilly was part. You know I'd only be seen on
- 18:14this but I leave. Oh no I'm thinking of
- 18:16what's-his-name from A Christmas Carol.
- 18:18Michael Michael Vaughn. He was very unsure about all of
- 18:21that wasn't me. I was working behind the scenes.
- 18:24Yeah, I would love to have seen Ian McKellen on screen if their
- 18:29voice is what we're going to get our than I guess.
- 18:32That's what we're going to get ya.
- 18:36It just doesn't feel. Big enough part for him.
- 18:42You know, I would have preferred him in this part Simeon but you
- 18:46know, I'm sure we'll get to and then there are some actors that
- 18:53are fantastic apart from, you know, when they need to be
- 19:09cgi'd, I believe we were little polystyrene.
- 19:12Things that they made. And I confess something to you,
- 19:14they actually took me until this viewing to realize, that they
- 19:18are snowmen in a great intelligence story.
- 19:22They are abominable snowmen and perhaps that was the idea.
- 19:30Oh, and here we are with Clara. Yes.
- 19:35What why? Yes that's why this is.
- 19:41This is the biggest crime. This episode has is killing her
- 19:48off. I mean, we'll get to it
- 19:50obviously, but you know how good is she in this?
- 19:55You know, as tarnishing a good in this and I'm not a Clara
- 19:58hater. I'm not one of the, you know,
- 20:00one of those people. I don't I just dislike the
- 20:03character on the most part, you know, that the character that
- 20:06she becomes when they settle on whatever character she's going
- 20:10to become bought Jenna. Louise Coleman is probably the
- 20:14most Complex actress in the new series to play a companion.
- 20:19Yeah, fact that she's saddled with that snarky know-it-all
- 20:24Clara that she eventually place. Oh, so she's so Charming in
- 20:29this. She is, she is.
- 20:30And how different would it have been to have had her this
- 20:35version of her going along with this.
- 20:37This doctor, even this version of the eleventh doctor.
- 20:41Do we know why change his mind? Cause I know she was written
- 20:44into some of those screws. Hips.
- 20:45And they had to change the scripts.
- 20:48What she was written in, I didn't know that what you've
- 20:50written into scripts is 37. Because I know Mark Gatiss is
- 20:53Cold War originally had, and you say the greatest crime is that
- 20:56they Roar out, the greatest crime was, they originally were
- 20:59going to call her barrel and Barrel was written into cold
- 21:04water. I mean, can you imagine this?
- 21:05Victorian governess in that submarine.
- 21:08That'd be nice. She'd have been brilliant, but
- 21:09shit. Alright, Great Snake.
- 21:17Now, all I can see is Barrel, read.
- 21:19Traveling with the 11th. Doctor.
- 21:21The name Barrel does come with his dangerous.
- 21:23Yeah. I don't know that but that
- 21:25suppose that explains a little bit.
- 21:27Why she's such a sketchy character in in in the kind of
- 21:30the back half of Series 7 if she was meant to be written like
- 21:35this. And they had to, they had to
- 21:37rewrite it, I don't know what's irritating, as well at this
- 21:40point. The Clara mystery is intriguing.
- 21:44I think the end of this episode, it left me on are all where's
- 21:47this going? We've not seen this done before.
- 21:49I'm very quickly in Syria 7B, got very tired of all.
- 21:54History. Yeah.
- 21:57And that watch. How do you feel about these
- 21:58titles? This is the first time.
- 22:01The only thing I can say, I like about these titles is the
- 22:04movement that we've, I like fast-paced movements through
- 22:09whatever we're going through and I like the face that's
- 22:12incorporated into the tiles, boss.
- 22:14Yeah, they're pretty much. Yeah, they're not good.
- 22:18Once Upon a Time, you know, I've drunk half a bottle of ouzo,
- 22:21yeah, a barbecue and a lot of food as well.
- 22:23And That night. Yeah that is 0 melted my innards
- 22:26and I brought it all up in a horrible mess and it looks very
- 22:29like that title sequence. I just watch it's funny because
- 22:35the majority of Series 7. I would, I would watch I'd go
- 22:38for a pint with my mate on a Saturday afternoon and then I'd
- 22:42come home and watch series 7. So I'd watch it on an under a
- 22:45little bit of a, you know, a little bit of a drunken Haze.
- 22:48Why is something yeah. Yeah, apart from the titles,
- 22:52which Maybe a little bit dizzy. You know, though.
- 22:56But from a very garish and hideous image like that title
- 23:00sequence to these visuals, which are just in chanting throughout
- 23:03this episode. Yeah.
- 23:05And again, nobody does kind of period dramas as well as the BBC
- 23:11really did I, you know? And this is properly.
- 23:14I've got an old Victorian house to snow machines.
- 23:16Going crazy. Marigolds got the choir singing?
- 23:19Yeah. All right.
- 23:22Fantastic. What about what about the
- 23:26doctor? That's this Sullen.
- 23:29Grumpy of given of retired doctor, I like it.
- 23:35I kind of guessed it that eat. They can keep him that way
- 23:38forever, but I like that and I kind of wish that that they,
- 23:44that Matt Smith had been able to play it that way for a little
- 23:47longer. He's yeah, he's very he's very
- 23:54much. I read that they they wanted to
- 23:59write him a little bit like When the series came back with
- 24:04Eccleston being a bit grumpy of it, you know brooding and yeah
- 24:09and II like the idea of that. I mean he, you know, I think
- 24:16Matt Smith is place, the doctor, the best in series 5, which I
- 24:19think a lot of people have said before, and as the series
- 24:25progresses, it becomes even comes a little bit more Zinnia
- 24:29and Zinnia and And of out there a little bit and a bit of a
- 24:33cartoon character, really, but it's this version of them is
- 24:39brooding version of them is just and he looks good as well, in
- 24:43the costume. I mean, it looked sort of
- 24:46tailored costume, he has in 7B. I've read this like that on,
- 24:50lock him. Stay looking like this.
- 24:51Yeah, it's just imagine him. And this Victorian Clara,
- 24:55they'll be literary scouring the universe.
- 24:58Looking like a pair of Victorian.
- 25:00It was So really anachronistic and every sort of Science
- 25:04Fiction setting. Mmm.
- 25:06Yeah. And, you know, I will get to the
- 25:09Tardis one week when we get to it and it was a vast Improvement
- 25:12on the previous targets. Support, you know, if there was
- 25:17ever a tardis console room. Yeah, that was orgasmic.
- 25:22It's this one. Yeah, the complete opposite to
- 25:25the old one as long as we've got vastra and Jenny as well.
- 25:29Hmm. What do you think of the The
- 25:31gang. This is one of the things I've
- 25:33come to reappraise because I really didn't like him to start
- 25:36off with. Hmm.
- 25:38And I've since listen to some of their stories for big finish and
- 25:41what it's the same with River Song, you know, you take Moffat
- 25:44out of the equation sometimes and they come to life in
- 25:47unexpected ways. Hmm.
- 25:50I think they work really, really well at this and in the Crimson
- 25:53Horror and in deep breath, he cries all those stories where
- 25:56the doctor sort of the action. Yeah, and they have to sort of
- 26:00power the action And, yeah, I think they could have easily
- 26:03carried, you know, carried a spin-off show.
- 26:07But what, I don't know what it would be aimed at which kind of
- 26:11audiences, you know, they've done.
- 26:16They've done demographic, tests and they said there's a show I
- 26:19or about a prehistoric lizard and her human wife and a
- 26:24psychotic potato. He's the doctor be racist or
- 26:30strikes? I think so.
- 26:31Yeah. I think it's a, it's a little
- 26:34bit of casual racism, isn't it? I don't think it's intended to
- 26:37make him racist. I just think it's unfortunate
- 26:42choice of words as the doctor gives out his latest companion
- 26:45in that Carriage. Yeah, he's behaving very a
- 26:49strong as well. Go back to him being sort of
- 26:53brooding and out of action, right?
- 26:55Apparently as well Moffitt really wanted to do the thing
- 26:57that The Douglas Adams was allowed to do and that was
- 26:59having the doctor say, oh, I've had enough of adventuring, you
- 27:02know, I'm retiring. It's that bit later on in this
- 27:08agonizing seeing where he dressed up as Sherlock Holmes
- 27:11and that's what he's back. You know, the sort of lemonade
- 27:13Taps and then dr. Yeah, here we go.
- 27:18God too good to be true. Yeah, I think that would have
- 27:22been such a good idea though to have him, you know, retired and
- 27:26this kind of version of clay. However, brings it brings him
- 27:28out of that and they go, they go.
- 27:31I don't know. I could have I could have
- 27:33watched several episodes of if in being based in Victorian
- 27:36London. Well, and you can base him as
- 27:38well because they did it in serious 10.
- 27:40They gave him a set location and they said he was still able to
- 27:43go off and have adventures and it was wonderful coming back to
- 27:45that University. Yeah, I can come back to
- 27:47Victorian London. They would have been wonderful.
- 27:54I mean I think that's the best stories from the Snowman on with
- 27:56all this and possibly the Crimson Horror.
- 27:58It's the to Victorian ones. Yeah.
- 28:02And I think the director of this directed, The Crimson Horror as
- 28:05well. Didn't whole really knew his
- 28:07stuff that he knew what he was doing.
- 28:09Yeah, she said your power isn't ugly fellow Rooney.
- 28:15How do you feel about the some tiryns?
- 28:19Well, namely Strax being trade in such a comedic way because
- 28:29I've kind of done a complete turnaround on it, I didn't like
- 28:32it to start with, but the more I've watched things with the
- 28:38sontarans, in the more, I realize, yeah, they are a bit of
- 28:41a comedy race. Really.
- 28:42I think that, I mean, I think the only time they've been
- 28:44treated seriously ever, really is war, the sontarans.
- 28:49Yo, that's the Bold story. They're making them a credible
- 28:52threat. Yeah.
- 28:53Whereas there too. They are always a bit like the
- 28:55two doctors that poor sontaran. Yes, blown.
- 28:58Yup. Acid is his leg chopped off?
- 29:01I mean areas. Yeah, you know, you can't
- 29:04exactly take store seriously innovation of time.
- 29:10I don't think every law that comes out.
- 29:11Kevin Lindsey is my off in the time, war is hilarious.
- 29:15Fantastic. Once I said, I think maybe Kind
- 29:20of a little bit, there's a little less comedy in the
- 29:23sontaran experiment a bit torture involved there.
- 29:27And yeah, Very sadistic but yeah I kind of you know I was always
- 29:33like, you know I know they shouldn't be that yet.
- 29:35I think sometimes the comedy can be over played a little bit.
- 29:39What fastracks with strategy. Yeah.
- 29:42Tom. Tom remember that joke?
- 29:45She's this a chip knows about a Ryan comedy.
- 29:48But okay, it's move over. You've got sick.
- 29:54He's a really funny writer. Margate, it's not me.
- 30:00We're going to appeal to all the two-year-olds out.
- 30:04I love this. The Carriage pulls away, and she
- 30:08standing there behind it. It's just escaped from it.
- 30:13Yeah, see this is this is really different to how our Clara is
- 30:17introduced in here. She's inquisitive, and she
- 30:21doesn't, you know, let the fact that later on that they but he's
- 30:24staircase goes up into the clouds.
- 30:26Put her off. Yeah.
- 30:29Where is this? A lot of pursue the doctor sort
- 30:32of pursuing Clara, isn't it? Yeah, bells of Saint John.
- 30:35Yeah. I just like her having all this
- 30:37agency, you know. Yeah.
- 30:39It's all balls. Sorry you're not on me.
- 30:42Yeah, I know, I mean I suppose if we'd have kept this version
- 30:47of her, we wouldn't have possibly seen her story.
- 30:51Probably wouldn't have played out the same.
- 30:53Maybe, I don't know. I do like the idea that and I
- 30:58can't remember who who suggested it.
- 31:01But I do like the idea that the Clara in series 7 B is different
- 31:08to the Clara in series 8. That's why personality so
- 31:11different because it's a different Splinter and that we
- 31:14just haven't seen what's happened in between, that's a
- 31:19great idea that person's puts away all my objections.
- 31:22If that was only been alive in the story Lorelai, right?
- 31:25Yeah. That's why she's a teacher now.
- 31:27Okay? Yeah, instead of all this
- 31:29off-screen development that we've never heard of, yeah,
- 31:32she's actually a different version of her.
- 31:35You're choking up another Plus for the mafia era.
- 31:37Well, done, we go. You know I don't think any it
- 31:40now. I'm gonna say a no Positive
- 31:42thing about Steven Moffat here, no writer of dogs who can do
- 31:47Ferris out quite like, Steven Moffat know the fairies how of
- 31:51your childhood? That's all magic.
- 31:53And this is a brilliant example of that as she goes up into the
- 31:56clouds. Yeah.
- 31:59And, and, and it the whole kind of fairytale thing runs
- 32:01throughout his series, you know, it's like Russell Russell T,
- 32:07Davies is here. It's very much grounded in
- 32:09reality and this is grounded. Fairy tale but Disney isn't it?
- 32:15Disney can go one or two ways, right?
- 32:17It can be absolutely like, all your dreams.
- 32:20Come true and magic and enchanting to watch or ask the
- 32:24fucking sick bucket and mulch because those two ways as well.
- 32:28You can either have this or you can watch the doctor, the Widow
- 32:31and the Wardrobe, you know? Oh, just agonizing.
- 32:36I mean, what's more Fairy Tail dinner?
- 32:38A magic staircase that goes up into the sky.
- 32:42Yeah. Box in the clouds.
- 32:43Yeah. Yeah, that's him.
- 32:45Doing something original in Widow and the Wardrobe is just
- 32:47the cover into all the present, isn't it?
- 32:50Yeah, yeah. I think I think that's the
- 32:52thing. I mean, obviously, Christmas,
- 32:53Carol is very much based on the Christmas Carol and the doctor
- 32:56Widow. And the Wardrobe is very much
- 32:58based up, well, not a lot of air but has elements of The Lion,
- 33:01the Witch and the Wardrobe. This is probably You know, this
- 33:06is this is better because it's branching away from from that,
- 33:10it's a more original original idea.
- 33:13There are many reasons why a Christmas, Carol is my least
- 33:15favorite Christmas special. But I will say this, that
- 33:18shocked that's floating around in the air and the shoals of
- 33:21fish. Awesome magic.
- 33:22It's amazing. I mean, look at her there.
- 33:26She's just Bewitched as a she Why, why why didn't we have this
- 33:31version Barrel? Where did you go?
- 33:38And the Tardis as well. Doesn't he know?
- 33:40Just what I love here, as well as that.
- 33:43You think that you're going to get going into the Tardis at
- 33:47this point and they save it. Don't they for later?
- 33:50Yeah, she can't boy. Is a hell of a reveal as well.
- 33:54Yeah. She kind of yeah.
- 33:57She's Very much, I'm not going to stay, and I'm going to stay
- 34:03here, I'm gonna have to think about this.
- 34:07Straight down the stairs and that's also a very natural
- 34:10reaction is. Yeah.
- 34:12Okay. That's enough.
- 34:16But it's yeah, I think it was done with dry ice, wasn't it?
- 34:21It's think it's just, it's so simple and effective for it.
- 34:27You know, and you know by the time master of Syria ended, I
- 34:30was just I was sick of the whole fairytale thing and I wanted it
- 34:33to get back to being a bit darker and it's scary.
- 34:36And boy did we get that with Capaldi's first year?
- 34:39Because it kind of itches that that kind of fairytale aspects
- 34:43really? Doesn't it kind of it?
- 34:45Yes. Very much.
- 34:47I don't know. Grittier is the right word
- 34:49because that's I don't like calling someone a bit twisted,
- 34:53isn't it? Yeah, he's a bit twisted and
- 34:55supposed to show, you know. It's very it's Very
- 34:57uncomfortable. I I'm with you I love series 8
- 35:03and I love series tent and I like elements of series 9, but
- 35:07it's not always a comfortable viewing.
- 35:10I like dancing. And although you know, you
- 35:12talked about dark or death and Heaven earlier as a lot of
- 35:14problems I have for that but that that's an adult version of
- 35:19Doctor Who for the first episode.
- 35:21That's that's just kind of ignoring the kids in time.
- 35:24Yeah. Yeah.
- 35:25That's my office. Say I just write what I want.
- 35:27Um, it's Brave right, but it's Brave.
- 35:30Yeah. Where is this is absolutely,
- 35:33this is totally geared at the family.
- 35:34Audience is it is. Okay.
- 35:38Let's try get to the nuts and bolts of this though, about what
- 35:40is so fundamentally good about this Clara that it's in prison
- 35:45in our Clara? I think I mean firstly he's
- 35:50taking her out of the you know she's not in a modern era.
- 35:55I think we're looking at somebody who's out with no out
- 36:00of time. I think she's I think there's a
- 36:04lot of fun behind her and she's very cheeky And she's not.
- 36:13She's not snarky know it and she's really enjoying her life.
- 36:18Yeah, I almost forgot the impression with Clara from 7B.
- 36:21She's a bit like, well, I don't want to be a babysitter, you
- 36:24know? Yeah.
- 36:27Yeah. This, this version of Clara.
- 36:28She is already having fun in her life.
- 36:30She's having Adventures. She's a, you know, she's a
- 36:32barmaid. She's a, she's a school
- 36:34mistress. She's called mr.
- 36:36Associate nanny. Rashi's both, isn't she?
- 36:40That's all right. Yeah yeah yeah.
- 36:44So you know she's already she's already there doing things.
- 36:47You know she's she doesn't she doesn't necessarily need the
- 36:52doctor in in her life. He just happens to come into her
- 36:56life in the same breath. I think she shows appropriate
- 37:00fear when things are tense. Yeah, it's she doesn't just
- 37:03throw a snarky quit but it's something.
- 37:08Okay? And if she doesn't understand,
- 37:12she asked what it was. I always feel like the other
- 37:13Clara just knows everything. Yeah.
- 37:16She's too close. She's too clever.
- 37:18She's too clever. Although mine clever women.
- 37:21Jesus, no, no God, no television.
- 37:24You know, got though but it's like I don't like it.
- 37:27When the doctor knows everything I'm over.
- 37:29Be a man or a woman. No, no.
- 37:32And I think in this quadrant, you know, although she's
- 37:35questioning, she clearly knows things as well.
- 37:37She's I don't know, she's just fun.
- 37:43She's just fun to be around. It's like so simple.
- 37:47You know, I'll feel like there's a warm smile on this car.
- 37:50Has faced, and there's a smug grin on our claws face.
- 37:54Yeah. And there's a world of
- 37:55difference between the two. Yeah, yeah.
- 37:59You know, and I think also, you know, you this, we have that
- 38:04issue of the being. Nobody really knows how to how
- 38:09to write her for a long time. And, you know, then she outlives
- 38:14her Outlets of welcome, you know.
- 38:16I believe she should have gone in in last Christmas and I think
- 38:23she's just very, I just don't think anybody knows what to do
- 38:26with. I don't think Moffitt knows what
- 38:27to do with her. He's a great coincidence, you
- 38:30know, that when she finally gets murdered horribly by that Raven,
- 38:34that a very next episode post, Clara everyone considers to be
- 38:38the all-time Masterpiece of the series.
- 38:41Yeah, and then hell-bent where she comes back, no one considers
- 38:45that to be the all-time series. Sorry, I'm being mean now.
- 38:49No, but she should have got a cheek, there's multiple times.
- 38:52She should have gone. And I really thought that was
- 38:55the end in face the Raven where she where she got killed.
- 38:58I thought I was it done it now. Thank God, they'd already
- 39:00brought all that cover on Doctor Who magazine over in the
- 39:02American Diner and I was like well we ain't seen that.
- 39:04Yeah she's back baby. This bit here as well.
- 39:10Where's she staying in the park guide dogs?
- 39:15Like a lunatic. Yeah, she's just The now she's
- 39:22just adorable. What's nice is you are starting
- 39:25to it's nowhere near as effective.
- 39:27Do you remember in the stolen Earth and Journey's End where he
- 39:31brought in? Just everybody that had been
- 39:33involved in the 3 Series? You know, he even created this
- 39:36vast array cast of memorable. Characters are both, think we'd
- 39:42really done much of that in my office area, to this point and
- 39:45I'm slowly, you've obviously got the companions, but then you've
- 39:48got River and you've got the paternoster gang with Slowly
- 39:52cohering, yeah, we can break it is and I think in series 7, be
- 39:57one of the few strengths of it is.
- 39:59That's the one time where it feels like there is a set of
- 40:01characters around the doc. Yeah.
- 40:03Yeah, it's and, you know, I'm kind of sad that the the kind of
- 40:08the paternoster gang didn't get a really a send-off really from
- 40:11the, from the show, they've just gone.
- 40:13Do you know why that is no body found out this week, actually
- 40:17listening to another podcast. Apparently Capaldi said, I'll do
- 40:21this. All, but I don't want all these
- 40:23hangover plots and things I Fresh Start when I do it.
- 40:27So Moffitt was like, right, we're going to bring them in
- 40:29just to help the transition and then it'll be completely fresh
- 40:32from that point on which is why all of this is Jan.
- 40:35What a shame? Yeah, I mean, you know, fair
- 40:38enough jettison it, if you if you want but at least give him a
- 40:41bit of a, an exit story. You know, is they're just gone.
- 40:46You never see him again. I'll see what's a stark
- 40:50contrast. Just to show how good an actress
- 40:53Jenna Coleman is, is she has this exact scene again, in deep
- 40:56breath with Madam track in this set, as a different character
- 41:00and the tone of it is completely different.
- 41:04Now this this scene actually it was it was one of the things.
- 41:09One of the things that irritated me not the scene itself but
- 41:14because it doesn't really make much sense.
- 41:16You know, they talk about one word answers and the thing that
- 41:22gets the doctor's attention is she says Pond and that's fine
- 41:29from a story perspective, that's going to get the doctor to, you
- 41:32know, attention however, why would she Think that that word
- 41:38would get the doctor to help. Okay.
- 41:42So you're saying what? Yeah this is something happening
- 41:45in the pond outside though. It is.
- 41:48Yeah. But what would I still say it's
- 41:52a yeah, a bit forced. It's forced.
- 41:55Yeah, and I think that is and, and we get something else
- 41:59similar later on in the story where the made that the house
- 42:03opens the door to Jenny and vaster and vaster stairs.
- 42:08I'm the lizard woman from the dawn of time and it's a get
- 42:12that's great, it's funny, it's comedy.
- 42:14However getting me all the Steven Moffat characters tall,
- 42:16that allocate different And I think that's the that's the
- 42:26issue for me what you know and fine if that's the if that's the
- 42:30style of but that takes me out of the story, you know.
- 42:35The she didn't need to crack a line there too, to make the mate
- 42:41scream. She didn't know the maid could
- 42:44have just screamed from seeing her, you know.
- 42:49Yeah. What's the one with the Who
- 42:51keeps fighting all the way through the story.
- 42:54Is it the adult? A, how is it?
- 42:56Ya know, there's, there's a doctor who knew serious story
- 42:58whether in the past and every time it's confronted with one
- 43:01thing after another and he's fainted becoming which episode
- 43:05it is. I think it's a Jody.
- 43:06I think it might be. Yeah, well, that's going to book
- 43:09me now and also we're getting a brief Glimpse that console there
- 43:13because our room but just the lights, you know, I do like the
- 43:16touch that he's wearing, he's wearing a nice glasses and now
- 43:20we'll saw the little details that Moffat does remember, you
- 43:23know? But kisses for the past, like
- 43:25they again, he's right for Doctor Who fans.
- 43:27Okay, he wants to reward Doctor Who fans, you know, the idea as
- 43:32well of their the snowglobe being the great intelligence
- 43:36skin is so simple but it's really is its Vivid is
- 43:40memorable. It is it is and I think that's
- 43:42you know that that's what Moffat doesn't quite does very well.
- 43:45He puts memorable things, here we go.
- 43:52And you know what? It's even playing the Sherlock
- 43:54theme tune. Yeah.
- 43:56See this is the Steven Market. Takes you straight.
- 43:59Yeah, it takes, it takes you straight out of the story.
- 44:02It's so good. Okay.
- 44:04Metal isn't it? Yeah, and you don't so far in
- 44:07this episode, he's not been screaming.
- 44:09I'm clever, I'm clever, right? Yeah, it's remember this,
- 44:13whereas, in this scene just screams of it and there's
- 44:15absolutely no reason he needed to turn up in this costume
- 44:18either because everyone at home is going.
- 44:20Ah ha ha Sherlock references. How witty Yeah, exactly.
- 44:24It's again it's another forced of thing, you know.
- 44:31It's the two teaspoons of this story together.
- 44:33You know, it's the Moffett smug comedy scene and Richard Lee,
- 44:38Grant. We haven't talked about.
- 44:43I was gonna, I was about to say that takes us on to Richard E,
- 44:46Grant. Yeah.
- 44:54Go on, what's your opinions on him for your silence speaks
- 44:56volumes? I think it's a true gift, you
- 45:00know, that I'm an can stride so many franchises and fantastic
- 45:06movies, without one scintilla of acting talent.
- 45:12I mean, it's astonishing, his career is a staunch.
- 45:14He's the same thing in each thing that he does.
- 45:21It's just three chewing the fucking scenery right now, and
- 45:24instead, he's just, there is a zombie.
- 45:27I'll tell you what, we see more charismatic zombies in Doctor,
- 45:30Who Bündchen Journey to the Centre of the TARDIS got more
- 45:37lives than him. And what's worse?
- 45:40Is he turns up in the bells of st.
- 45:42John, and he turns up in name of the doctor as well.
- 45:45Yeah, I guess Evermore board in the role.
- 45:47Doesn't he like his? Yeah, I'm name of the doctor is
- 45:50likely Please kill me when he died at the end of this.
- 45:54Also, we fall on our side goodness.
- 45:59Well, it's the most sparkling turn, is it?
- 46:03No, it's not. How, what did you did you ever
- 46:08watch him in a stream of the schalke?
- 46:12And the animated we were spared word way we were spared a run of
- 46:17so non-stick performances well whoever made that casting
- 46:24decision I hope you're not still doing that job.
- 46:32I mean Matt Smith Richard A Grodd i'll-- are Worlds, Apart
- 46:36are they? Staying?
- 46:40As an are actually actually the great intelligence is just this
- 46:43sort of emotion was force, you're right?
- 46:45They couldn't find it. Kind of It, kind of works.
- 46:51It kind of works but not with need.
- 46:53Somebody charismatic to play against.
- 46:56Yes, it seems in like Crimson or aware Diana, Rigg are so great.
- 47:00You know, you give him a good actor to play against otherwise
- 47:04it just looks like he's playing Looney Tunes while the other
- 47:06person is rolling their eyes going.
- 47:07Yeah. Yeah.
- 47:08You are you really gonna play it that way, you know, clashes
- 47:12doesn't it and it makes it worse than what it has actually
- 47:14intended to be and it's a shame, you know, because it's probably
- 47:19the one sticking point. In this episode.
- 47:22Yeah. I like that when he waves up at
- 47:26the window, is she standing up to her bedroom?
- 47:30Yeah. Dairy cow.
- 47:32And this fate a couple as snog box, you know, in the bells of
- 47:36Saint John. Snog box.
- 47:40Yeah, that's what she calls. The Tardis not get me, so she
- 47:43does, doesn't she? Yeah, I'm with giant a no
- 47:49hanky-panky in the toilet. Well, it sounds to fellows in
- 47:54practice Ayers. Then I'm all over and and and
- 48:00and again, I think Sometimes I like the way it plays off. and
- 48:08of innocence of, Of Matt, Smith's eleventh doctor.
- 48:14I kind of sometimes see him as a bit of a teenager really, you
- 48:19know, it doesn't always work, you know, there was a place like
- 48:25the the old man in in a young man's body brilliantly in series
- 48:305. I feel like it's almost
- 48:32abandoned later on there are moments.
- 48:34Yeah. He says, he feels different in
- 48:38series 5, even the way he looks, you know, he's very true, a sort
- 48:42of costume. God is great.
- 48:45It's pure trowel, isn't it? And even, even his, even his
- 48:48hair, you know, he's much more tailored, after serious five.
- 48:52You know, why don't you? It's because the impossible
- 48:53astronauts happily Americans are watching.
- 48:55Now. We can't ever a trampy hero
- 48:58anymore, but they've got be tailored.
- 48:59Yeah, See, this is a fabulous idea.
- 49:02The ice ice. That's the way to do it.
- 49:06Nothing days. Worse than CGI.
- 49:09Now You know, we talked who fans were no special effects ever,
- 49:14been a sticking point. We just we watch it and we
- 49:20accept it for what it was at the time.
- 49:23You know, it's true. Jim that are I have said very
- 49:25mean things about a lot of children, in the Steven, Moffat
- 49:30era are called them, The Brood of the Damned, you know.
- 49:32And think about some of the ones we've had their, you're not
- 49:34whole bunch in in the forest of the night and we'll see that
- 49:39renders kid in night terrors well, this pair they're bucking
- 49:45the trend often they're quiet. They're all right, aren't they?
- 49:48They're not, you know what the focus isn't on them.
- 49:51They're part of the story. Tori.
- 49:53But we're not eating into, we're not the story through their
- 49:56eyes. Although you know, I thought
- 49:59that the, the young has Iran in Christmas, Carol was pretty well
- 50:05acted Oh, hang on it, which one? Because I don't want to say
- 50:08anything inappropriate here. Oh no.
- 50:10I'm thinking about the one, who's about 20, because he's hot
- 50:13as hell. You're talking about natural.
- 50:14I'm talking about the child. Yeah, okay yeah.
- 50:17Don't think he talks. All right?
- 50:20No, he was pretty good and obviously, young Amelia Pond as
- 50:22well. Yeah.
- 50:23Oh yeah. He was loaded to a false sense
- 50:26of security. She was so good in the 11th
- 50:28Hour. He's like, right?
- 50:29Right. Kids into every episode, there
- 50:31are mates. Okay, let's get any old child
- 50:35actor in we're doing based on deceit now, aren't we?
- 50:39We are ya. Hmm.
- 50:40Just for sort of five minutes. Yeah.
- 50:45There's one thing Doctor Who can do well, it's run around a manor
- 50:47house. It's whilst a monster
- 50:50approaches. Do you think, do you think the
- 50:55doctor should be this distraught about losing his companions?
- 51:01Because this is like, this is Rory, isn't he?
- 51:05So I think this is probably a better way of doing it than
- 51:07having an entire season of him moaning.
- 51:10Yes, but moaning. Mourning, the loss of Rose.
- 51:14It's there is 3. Yeah, I love seriously.
- 51:18But that's the one thing. Where are my God?
- 51:19You bastard. Ya horrible about this offseason
- 51:25has she told you to fuck off at the end of the year.
- 51:27Yeah. Doing it this quick and I quite
- 51:31liked it in dr. Mysterio's.
- 51:33Well, we're just a couple of scenes where he Mourns the loss
- 51:36of river in wedding of River. Song.
- 51:39Was he cool? Husbands our river systems?
- 51:42Another good Christmas special, so he does not come out.
- 51:45Yeah, he does. Yeah, yeah.
- 51:48Got ya. See and this is the sort of
- 51:50humor are. Hey it's Matt Smith walking into
- 51:54a tree and a backward spacesuit. Yeah, it's that really off and
- 51:58it's not often fingers funny for the kids.
- 52:00No. No.
- 52:01And I'm quite embarrassed for that actress.
- 52:05Really because she was she played a main part in life on
- 52:10Mars. If he's if he watched Life on
- 52:12Mars before he died, didn't she wasn't the main woman was she
- 52:15she was Annie in life. On Mars.
- 52:18No, she wasn't. Mmm.
- 52:19So when she totally different know.
- 52:21So when she turned up in this I was thinking oh she's going to
- 52:24have a, you know, which she's going to have a quite a big part
- 52:27and it will she's not she's just kind of reduced to running
- 52:30around and screaming and fainting.
- 52:33I feel sorry for a lot of famous people in the mafia of all sorts
- 52:37of Coleman. You know, and Bill Bailey.
- 52:41Yeah. But like the humor quickly.
- 52:44Yep. Like his humor can be so
- 52:46sophisticated, I Leon, what's press-gang, right?
- 52:49Where the dialogue is the constantly with you throughout
- 52:52and he's doing that sort of Shakespearean in one door out
- 52:56another, you know, and and and that sort of fast furious comedy
- 53:01really clever. Then on the other hand, he does
- 53:04jokes, you know, the would drop like a lead balloon at a kids
- 53:07party. Yeah, you got to wonder what I
- 53:12mean when he wrote press gang unit that was obviously shown on
- 53:17kids TV. Wasn't it back in the nineties?
- 53:20So seriously sophisticated that show.
- 53:23It's properly a dull. Yeah, I don't know why he gets
- 53:29it wrong. Maybe because he thinks he has
- 53:31to write for kids when he's writing this.
- 53:33When he's writing humor, I don't know.
- 53:36See, when Lynne Russell T Davies does the same thing.
- 53:38You'll have a burping bin or a farting.
- 53:41Ting politician, right? I like for me that just works
- 53:46because like I hate to say it but flatulence doesn't make it,
- 53:50you know, I was like, like you got it brings a kid in and
- 53:52Falls. He goes right.
- 53:53That's funny. There's yeah.
- 53:56Oh yes. Do you know the tree come
- 53:58through the wall when Jackie say that amazing line about it,
- 54:01you'll burn Christmas trees. Who is lucky gauges?
- 54:05Is comedy really well? He does.
- 54:10I'm not sure about the kissing, I don't like the kissing but you
- 54:13know, I'll have been told that I'm a bit of an old fusty
- 54:16fuddy-duddy and having a sexy Doctor Who that, you know, likes
- 54:22ladies in short skirts, refreshing, new element of the
- 54:27show. I don't think there's anything
- 54:30particularly wrong with it. It's, you know, I remember that
- 54:34the, the the Aurora that that was thrown up when the TV movie
- 54:44came out and you know, the doctor was kissing Grace and it
- 54:48never bothered me. I think what Bob I think it
- 54:54works and I'm okay with it, if there's a reason for it, I don't
- 55:01think it at what I when I don't like it is.
- 55:04When it's done for no reason. Like, that was just dumb to have
- 55:08a kiss. Yeah, to have a kiss.
- 55:10Yeah, it's any. Yeah, it it happens often.
- 55:15It's daughter and unicorn and the WASP where she goes.
- 55:19You want to shock, I'll give you a shock as he does so.
- 55:23So to save his life, you know. Yeah.
- 55:26That's what I think sexual about it at all.
- 55:28No no. Which is great.
- 55:31But like these clearly, Matt Smith and Jenna Coleman have
- 55:34sexual chemistry, like is very apparent and they lean into it a
- 55:38fair bit. Yeah.
- 55:40And I think that's what people were like.
- 55:42Yeah. Romantic chemistry.
- 55:44Fair enough. Sexual chemistry.
- 55:46Hmm. Yeah.
- 55:48Or maybe I'm just very old. I don't think so.
- 55:54It's the same people better accuse me of just throwing this
- 55:58out at the Straits because, you know, if you seen these pictures
- 56:01that are popping up on social media of shoetique, at war in
- 56:04his underwear, in the gym. Mmm, I don't want to see the
- 56:07doctors cock. Jim.
- 56:08All right. There's a kind of, there's a
- 56:17kind of line isn't there. There's a kind of there's a
- 56:22line. If that makes it cheaper.
- 56:25Lawyers you go so far. Here we go.
- 56:31Now we've got this wonderful set piece of this crazy ice maiden.
- 56:36And now we're going up the staircase into the TARDIS.
- 56:42I don't think there's a Duff now from this point on you.
- 56:45No, no no. Oh yeah, there is, I've just
- 56:49remembered one, just one, it's the crying.
- 56:53The tears come down, love ya. What is it with Moffat and
- 56:59emotions? You know, love and crying.
- 57:04And yeah, it's Yeah, it looks so good again, doesn't it?
- 57:10Basic yeah, enjoy your reminds me over that bit in.
- 57:13Moulin Rouge when you McGregor and Nicole Kidman to the cloud
- 57:16and have a little dance around. Yeah.
- 57:19And that was a big budget, Hollywood Blockbuster.
- 57:21You know. Yeah.
- 57:23Look at this. Sexy Tardis.
- 57:25And it is, isn't it? And I know a lot of people say,
- 57:28oh, it's much better when a couple comes in and they kind of
- 57:32put a lot of Furnishings in it and they, you know, give them a
- 57:34little Library up there and any probably does look Better in the
- 57:39Coppola Arab or going from what we had before this to this.
- 57:44It's stunning that I love the lighting in it.
- 57:48The, the bluish green it just looks so good you can.
- 57:53And it feels like the Tardis to, I think the issue that I had
- 57:58with Smith's, first hardest was to eat.
- 58:00Just it was a mess. It reminded me of ever gets a
- 58:04world-class and chrome. It, rose with those Conference
- 58:06Centers where they have, Engines.
- 58:08You know, it look as boring as that console room.
- 58:11Yeah, and you never got a sense of way you were in it.
- 58:15I mean, I still don't know whether the doors were in the
- 58:20Tardis in that console room. It just, you just never knew
- 58:24where you were. You were in there.
- 58:27But this is just, I mean, this is probably my favorite.
- 58:31I do have a real soft spot for Jody's as well when they when
- 58:35they learn how to light it and shoot it.
- 58:37Well, which I think, I think is from a sort of series 12
- 58:39onwards. Hmm.
- 58:40Yeah, I think it's like, can you hear me to remember when all the
- 58:43lights are down, it was really atmospheric.
- 58:45Yeah. Blues and reds.
- 58:47And and I think if there was one thing, because I've got a soft
- 58:51spot for Jody Tardis as well. And I think if there's one thing
- 58:53I would change about her tireless, it would have been to
- 58:55get rid of the big penises. But I got rid of that, just
- 59:01mapping that that toy the console, okay?
- 59:03Now, you know, you've got one of these bedside drawer and they
- 59:15were pink originally. And it's not realize that a
- 59:17gradient that's or bronzy color. Yeah.
- 59:21It would have, it would have opened the set out more if
- 59:24they'd have got rid of them because instead, there's a lot
- 59:27of scenes of really see what's going.
- 59:29Because people are, you know, but yeah.
- 59:32Swinging IT, background to to this Tardis.
- 59:36As good as this sequence is, with Victorian Clara.
- 59:41Going in my favorite scene in the bells of Saint.
- 59:44John is when our Clara and it's that you know, when they go into
- 59:49the Tardis right around the console out and into the plane.
- 59:52Yeah. Honestly best entrance the
- 59:55Tardis you're ever gonna they'll never top it.
- 59:58That was such a kind Of high-energy sequence as well.
- 1:00:02I, when I watch that at the time, I was like, wow, this is,
- 1:00:05this is so good and this is total Moffitt as well.
- 1:00:09He's giving you this lovely moment and absolutely certain.
- 1:00:13Yeah, this is where she's going to join the Tardis and we know
- 1:00:17that the ice woman's following them and then she suddenly grabs
- 1:00:20her and pulls her back. Yeah, I've been watching it go.
- 1:00:25No. And then you think oh well they
- 1:00:28that my actually bring her back and oh my god.
- 1:00:32I've just realized. Yeah he murder someone and they
- 1:00:35say did yeah it can't be. Now I do have a finger know if
- 1:00:42she fell from a great height. Maybe her head would have been
- 1:00:45crushed in and there'd be a lot less.
- 1:00:46I think, they'd be a lot more be, a lot more physical damage
- 1:00:50than that. I don't, I don't kind of get
- 1:00:54that though. It materializes the Tardis
- 1:00:56around her. What I've done is a few times.
- 1:00:58However, they, they did it with brokers in partner, the ways.
- 1:01:01I don't quite get it. We've never done it before, but
- 1:01:05yeah. No, I think.
- 1:01:07Yeah. Well, the same thing happens in
- 1:01:10Billing, doesn't it with the angels around the Tardis?
- 1:01:13Yeah, although that's that's that's clever plot and that's
- 1:01:17quite a. Yeah, I think just doing it for
- 1:01:20the hell of it. Is just the right side of
- 1:01:22Norfolk clever. That is Like, you know,
- 1:01:29obviously I've become a little bit of a known as the person who
- 1:01:34doesn't like muffins approach to Doctor Who in this podcast world
- 1:01:38that we exist in. But like, when he's on form it's
- 1:01:42probably the best Doctor Who ever is.
- 1:01:45It is and I think a good 50% of his era is really good and solid
- 1:01:53and I and the other 50% well, they just think for me.
- 1:01:56That's fair. Yeah, and as I think sometimes,
- 1:02:00you know, it's not not everything is going to appeal
- 1:02:02the appeal to, to you as it, you know.
- 1:02:04There's again there's very few Moffat stories typically Mack
- 1:02:12Smith stores. I go back to know, maybe because
- 1:02:16the cell Arc heavy, I'll definitely be there.
- 1:02:19Scott that's got something to do with, isn't it?
- 1:02:21There's a lack of re-watch ability because you can't just
- 1:02:23watch one, mhm. Yeah, it is.
- 1:02:26Like when I, when I was, you know, trying to entice their
- 1:02:30that the my friend to watch Doctor Who.
- 1:02:32And I was trying to think of some Matt Smith episodes I could
- 1:02:36put on and I was like, well, what can I put on?
- 1:02:39Which isn't kind of in the middle of an arc or a standalone
- 1:02:44and she's not very good. So, you know, as sort of good as
- 1:02:48a reset as the 11th hour is, I still think roses your best
- 1:02:51eaten to the new series. Yeah.
- 1:02:53Yeah. It sort of says, every question
- 1:02:56it does. It doesn't it it does.
- 1:02:57Yeah. Offers this huge sort of thrill
- 1:02:59of Adventure. Yeah.
- 1:03:05Why? So this is the point where we
- 1:03:08kind of still trust more fit to kill people and for them to say
- 1:03:12so, will I, okay, this is very moving when I got to a point you
- 1:03:16know, when Bill got shot I was like, oh please.
- 1:03:19Yeah. I mean, the first of all, I know
- 1:03:22you called, what are you doing? The most likable fucking
- 1:03:29companion. You've given us.
- 1:03:31And now I kind of would have been would have liked it better
- 1:03:34ending for Bill really? As much as that to.
- 1:03:37Is just orderly fantastic. No, it's about my recording of
- 1:03:42that. You may have mentioned it
- 1:03:45before. Let's press record.
- 1:03:48What all for free and a half hours.
- 1:03:51Oh my word. It wasn't the wind, the cold.
- 1:03:54Nothing was saving. I was like the London
- 1:04:03Underground on it. Now is this leading into the web
- 1:04:05of fear? Hey.
- 1:04:07So I think he's on intentionally giving the great intelligence,
- 1:04:11the idea, because I don't think we knew Weber fear been found
- 1:04:17that this point. Our think TV series is leaning
- 1:04:20into the fact that oh, really. I think so.
- 1:04:23Yeah. I didn't even think about it.
- 1:04:25Like, what is that awful coincidence?
- 1:04:27That the great intelligence? Yeah, I just as this was found
- 1:04:32by Horace, that's it. Really It's a really nice idea.
- 1:04:39Because obviously we got the Abominable snowmen after this,
- 1:04:42really in. But so in in, in terms of years,
- 1:04:47yeah, Hold at the doctors paste. Okay, one or two ways of
- 1:04:56mathematics when he does anger. Sometimes I think it can be
- 1:04:59really embarrassing and other times, I think he really sells
- 1:05:02it. Yeah.
- 1:05:04He's often in the same thing, you know?
- 1:05:07Yeah, I I mean I remember watching nightmare in silver.
- 1:05:15Yeah, that's it gets any more of them that were raised.
- 1:05:20That one for Mama surprising. No, has been clamoring to do
- 1:05:23that one or Journey to the Centre of the TARDIS.
- 1:05:29I mean, it my wife at the time she was she was like, This is
- 1:05:35this is the best performances ever given in nightmare in
- 1:05:38silver. And I was like, What He kidding,
- 1:05:40why? She's not your wife anymore as
- 1:05:42let no reason to get divorced. Um, you know, honestly, there's
- 1:05:47sales I was going to say, earlier about the paternoster
- 1:05:50gang are my don't have a child suit.
- 1:05:52I'm going to say it here, but I see one thing I've come to
- 1:05:55reappraise is each of the individual performances of those
- 1:05:59three and I think no one's got an easy task there, because it's
- 1:06:04it catering. Catering name is Kathleen is
- 1:06:07Catherine playing Madame vastra, battle almost impossible role to
- 1:06:12play. You know, Victorian vigilante,
- 1:06:15Sylar Ian. Yeah, she keeps the enormous
- 1:06:19dignity. Then you've got Jenny who's in
- 1:06:22the Des Adam version position of reminding everyone that she's a
- 1:06:26lesbian every five minutes. You know, I know people might
- 1:06:31think listen to this podcast, so I go around telling everyone,
- 1:06:34you know, I'll suck cock but I don't do that.
- 1:06:36People don't do that in life. And yet, she managed to play
- 1:06:39that role that she's really Charming, I think.
- 1:06:43Yeah. And then you got down, starkey's
- 1:06:44played loads of sontarans. This point and abused, every
- 1:06:49single one with a different personality, and it's just
- 1:06:52really fun to watch. He's almost he's almost
- 1:06:57unrecognizable in because he plays a sontaran in War of the
- 1:07:00sometimes doesn't me in flux and he's the one that goes Chuckles
- 1:07:06is he that you don't look at him and think its tracks is just,
- 1:07:12you know, it's so completely different and I think he even
- 1:07:16come in The name of this some tar and in some tearing
- 1:07:19stratagem, but again, he's totally different plane and
- 1:07:22totally different, some Terran Steven Moffat read.
- 1:07:27All of these jokes for Strax hundreds of jokes, you know, and
- 1:07:31a lot of them haven't landed. And then chip, no came in and
- 1:07:33goes wrong with the funniest bit ever is that sontarans say, and
- 1:07:38I wanted to ride a horse. What's the current now I've lost
- 1:07:48the plot snow globes. Going crazy.
- 1:07:51Yeah. Oh, that's right.
- 1:07:57Do you remember the? We think the doctors one is
- 1:08:02done. Something clever with Simeon.
- 1:08:04Yeah. And the great intelligence is
- 1:08:05going. No, no, I know you guys really.
- 1:08:08You don't think it's gonna be that easy.
- 1:08:12That was nice. Like I don't think we really
- 1:08:17give a shit about the great intelligence.
- 1:08:19I think we care about this point.
- 1:08:21Yeah. And I think, I think that's the
- 1:08:23thing. It's very, he's very much, it's
- 1:08:26a thin plot like I said earlier on, it's a thin plot and this is
- 1:08:30kind of a hole just laughing at Richard grunts performance.
- 1:08:37This is the most and make it is being in the hole and he's being
- 1:08:42animated, isn't he? The only way you can get it?
- 1:08:46Displaying emotion is to force the character to, so now the
- 1:08:53intelligence is in control of him, but yeah, it's very much
- 1:08:59he's background. It's the plot is background
- 1:09:02stuff, really? It's designed to To, to allow us
- 1:09:11to have those set pieces and character points.
- 1:09:15You've had kind of got two ways to have a success in the new
- 1:09:20series episode because you only got 45 minutes or an hour to
- 1:09:23sell it is you tell a really great character story or you
- 1:09:27tell a really great plot and often the best the very best our
- 1:09:33when both those things score. Yeah, I'll take one or the
- 1:09:37Other, you know you've got really great plot.
- 1:09:39Her a, we've got a fantastic carrot, study brilliant.
- 1:09:41Yeah, this is a really great character study.
- 1:09:45Yes. And it's an adequate plot.
- 1:09:48Yes. Yeah.
- 1:09:50It's the carrot it's the character study in the end.
- 1:09:53That it holds it together, doesn't it?
- 1:09:59The trouble with serious 7B is, you haven't got great plots or
- 1:10:02great carrot. Studies is just a load of set
- 1:10:05pieces. I do enjoy the name of the
- 1:10:08doctor though. I do enjoy the name of the
- 1:10:10doctor then I like rings of akhaten.
- 1:10:14Yeah. Yeah.
- 1:10:24But then I think. Do I like the name of the doctor
- 1:10:26or do I like it because it feels Choose the, it features, all
- 1:10:30these little kisses to the Past, you know?
- 1:10:33And I think sometimes we can get caught up in that.
- 1:10:35And, you know, is it an entertaining story or is it just
- 1:10:39really exciting? And because John hurt's at the
- 1:10:41end and we see doctors running past Clara.
- 1:10:44And I've heard it described as Moffat on autopilot and actually
- 1:10:47if you examine the plot of it, not a lot of that stuff, who the
- 1:10:52hell were the whisper men, what was a great intelligence Up To
- 1:10:54None of its explained, is just basically the set pieces that
- 1:10:57Lisa That amazing cliffhanger. This is sort of thing,
- 1:11:02terroristic Source, been moaning about Steven Moffat.
- 1:11:05He goes, you know what, he'll always provide you with a great
- 1:11:07moment, but there's not always the plot logic part.
- 1:11:10Like you need the block. Yeah, but I often complain about
- 1:11:16his character work. I don't think his character work
- 1:11:19hits in a sort of like a raw emotional way like Rusty
- 1:11:24Davis's. Does I want to turn left earlier
- 1:11:26today? And it broke my heart saying of
- 1:11:29the seen it broke? My heart one.
- 1:11:31I watch this in the morning and I was a little bit sad.
- 1:11:36Hmm. Yeah.
- 1:11:38Yeah yeah. When I watch the Christmas
- 1:11:41Invasion couple of weeks ago we watched it and the scene at the
- 1:11:46end where he brings down Harriet Jones.
- 1:11:49It's just like yeah it's dead. It was It drives something into
- 1:11:57your heart, you know, here in that, you know, that's good
- 1:12:01writing. Whereas this and it sounds like
- 1:12:05I don't enjoy the story. I do I do I really like the
- 1:12:07story but it's also the same intact.
- 1:12:09Yeah, it is a big, is he? I don't think he's going for
- 1:12:13emotions in the same sort of way that Russell is Russell
- 1:12:16something, or he's a horrible man rustling.
- 1:12:19I love him but he's a horrible, right?
- 1:12:21Breaks your heart continuously. Yeah he'd love to to hear that
- 1:12:25he'd be there with his chest. Are going through television,
- 1:12:29you know things. Yeah.
- 1:12:36But I feel like, you know, you know, when you watch in fact,
- 1:12:38did you watch the coronation celebration thing yesterday?
- 1:12:43You know, the big. No, I didn't.
- 1:12:45Actually I have my heart's broadest and it was a conductor,
- 1:12:50their God. Furious with this enormous bad
- 1:12:53and he was conducting away like a mad, man.
- 1:12:55I feel a Steven Moffat, you know, he's strong.
- 1:12:57He's really trying to get you to feel something.
- 1:13:00Yeah, Rusty Davis. Just uses a little scalpel, you
- 1:13:03know, but he cuts your deep. Yeah.
- 1:13:08Sorry, not became more about Rusty.
- 1:13:10Then there's always going to be the comparisons, though, isn't
- 1:13:14there? Yeah, you know, bottle day, but
- 1:13:17Moffitt absolutely has his own strengths.
- 1:13:21You know, strengths he does, he does and you know, he's first
- 1:13:24his first, two series of Sherlock.
- 1:13:26Absolutely fantastic. The rest of him not to certain
- 1:13:31about what he's such a strong writer.
- 1:13:37Well, I think series five in the series 8 of Doctor Who while
- 1:13:41there's a couple of Misses in there.
- 1:13:43Yeah. Exceptionally strong, and series
- 1:13:4610. I'll answer it.
- 1:13:47Wasn't him little with a monk's realized, I don't know.
- 1:13:54I enjoy it. I enjoy it.
- 1:13:58Also, this is where this is where he's putting it all
- 1:13:59together. I was hanging out with that
- 1:14:02woman in that Dalek. That was trying to make a
- 1:14:03souffle. There's a, he's getting so
- 1:14:08excited. There's a plot are going on
- 1:14:10here. And of course, UK gold decided
- 1:14:16not to broadcast this episode. But it's kind of nice that he
- 1:14:21skips out the story with a mystery to solve.
- 1:14:24Yeah. She also has ever particularly
- 1:14:28interesting issues or jumps into that.
- 1:14:30Electric doesn't she? Yeah, yeah, she does.
- 1:14:33Yeah, yeah. There's no, he's not.
- 1:14:36I think she doesn't because the plot needs her to do that in
- 1:14:41order for it to make sense. Yeah.
- 1:14:43And can you imagine and because he's kind of the arc is kind of
- 1:14:47forgotten about after the series, isn't it?
- 1:14:48So it's kind of like, hmm. This big thing about the
- 1:14:51splinters Imagine each episode with a different Clara.
- 1:14:56Oh that's enticing, isn't it? Imagine that.
- 1:14:59It's like a magining. Each story with a different
- 1:15:02chameleon. Someone else playing chameleon.
- 1:15:05Yeah. You can really test Jenna
- 1:15:08Coleman that as well, couldn't you?
- 1:15:09Yeah. Because I mean, you know, part
- 1:15:12of the, the Salvage team in Journey to the Centre of the
- 1:15:14TARDIS, you know? I know what L say though that's
- 1:15:17say, God has become the Catherine Tate Show with a
- 1:15:20different sketch each week, you know?
- 1:15:21Yeah. Yeah.
- 1:15:23Complaining. Well, so that's it.
- 1:15:27Oh, I got y'all. Let's now look at this, right.
- 1:15:30Look how enticing they make Series. 7 billion, talk about
- 1:15:33false fucking advertising going up.
- 1:15:38The gherkin on a submarine, aliens, I just saw, Willow, The
- 1:15:48Whisper men Diana rigor and Rachael Stirling.
- 1:15:53Oh, wow. This is gonna be the best series
- 1:15:57of Doctor Who ever. And this was the 50th
- 1:16:00anniversary series as well. Wasn't it really?
- 1:16:02This part. Yeah.
- 1:16:07It's not. Mmm.
- 1:16:09But do you know? I do think and praise a grill.
- 1:16:12Cover me for this. I really knew how to advertise
- 1:16:15the next series back in the day. I don't think chippers quite had
- 1:16:19it. You're back.
- 1:16:29It's okay. I'll I we lost each other for a
- 1:16:30second. That's the second.
- 1:16:32I was just saying that Moffat. Absolutely knew how to advertise
- 1:16:36his upcoming Seasons. I'm not sure chippers at that.
- 1:16:41So the same. No, no.
- 1:16:42And I think you know it I think it's quite telling as well.
- 1:16:48I think he could have done it, he could have he could have
- 1:16:51really gone for it. And some of those trailers that
- 1:16:54we got in the RTD, it Roma getting them off it air out.
- 1:16:58Just makes it look like the most exciting thing in the world but
- 1:17:01we never were never really got that from there was a really
- 1:17:06good one for flocks but we waited an age for it to drop.
- 1:17:10What it did here are full of yes warmers your dad have a list
- 1:17:15that I had ever all those fabulous visual elements in it
- 1:17:18but they drop this at the end of the last season.
- 1:17:21That's how they did it back then, you know.
- 1:17:23Yeah. During yeah specials you know
- 1:17:25hold on to your hat because this is what's coming.
- 1:17:27Yeah. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:17:29And we can didn't we kind of needed that?
- 1:17:30I think to ramp up the, the excitement for each Jody series,
- 1:17:36Rick, arndt Malik didn't quite have the same effect, you know?
- 1:17:40No. Because, and, you know, and this
- 1:17:42is maybe, maybe, maybe my reaction to that is because I
- 1:17:48didn't, I, I don't watch a lot of TV.
- 1:17:52I watch what I like and what I don't watch a lot of TV, so a
- 1:17:56lot of those people, The in that trailer at the end of the woman
- 1:18:01who fell to Earth. I didn't know who they were.
- 1:18:03And I was like, oh, it was a couple also.
- 1:18:06Well incoming. That's quite exciting.
- 1:18:08Yeah. Yeah.
- 1:18:10I'm coming. That's about all, you know, back
- 1:18:12in the day they were like coming next year.
- 1:18:15Sarah, Jane Smith. The Cybermen.
- 1:18:17You know, she isn't in our knickers watching.
- 1:18:24Starring somebody who was in Holby City, if that's not the
- 1:18:27same. Yeah, but then you know we
- 1:18:34didn't really have a deal so that you know, I know we're
- 1:18:38talking about Jodie now, instead of instead of the snowmen but we
- 1:18:42didn't really have a big finale to lead to either in that
- 1:18:47series. Nothing to kind of build towards
- 1:18:49and get excited about. You know, was there is nothing
- 1:18:52to tease. Yeah.
- 1:18:55I think I'm I think some of those things are strengths now,
- 1:18:57in her. It's all right.
- 1:18:59Then we were all like, what the hell is this?
- 1:19:01Yeah. Yeah, it was very, it was very,
- 1:19:04it was very strange at the time. And I think also, you know, to
- 1:19:08go to go from such high action and fast-paced stuff that we
- 1:19:15were getting with the mafia or two.
- 1:19:17Then two, then drop to something a little bit more.
- 1:19:19Slower was with caring. Yeah.
- 1:19:23And again and I keep I will keep saying it.
- 1:19:25I'm a big fan of the chip malaria.
- 1:19:27So What does it go from? Like things like a man to sized
- 1:19:30historical story like victory of the Daleks to Rosa?
- 1:19:37I would like chalk and cheese. Yeah, they are.
- 1:19:40How can they be in the same show?
- 1:19:43That's beautiful too, isn't it? And that's, that's the beauty of
- 1:19:46Doctor. Who.
- 1:19:47What about the beauty of the snowmobile is?
- 1:19:49You know what we got to do? Well, Well, I didn't know it.
- 1:19:53We have some questions on Twitter as well.
- 1:19:56Of course. Yeah, we haven't even touched on
- 1:19:58those questions. Too busy rabbit in for an hour
- 1:20:02and so let me just have a look because we've got because
- 1:20:05Twitter has a tendency to On order everything.
- 1:20:12So I'm going to see what we can find on here.
- 1:20:16So I put this out to the Twitter family, the hand fan and Dave
- 1:20:24Rennie says how magical is the TARDIS being in the clouds?
- 1:20:29I think it's a beautiful image we touched on that.
- 1:20:32Well, haven't we? It's it's magical.
- 1:20:37That's Dave Rennie from The Kettle Farm isn't it?
- 1:20:40It is, yeah. Yeah.
- 1:20:43Dave from the kettle and again, Dave was commented on
- 1:21:00something. We said earlier, how he loves
- 1:21:03the Victorian choir but he despises modern Clara.
- 1:21:06She was the version we should have had I think we've covered
- 1:21:10quite a strong word. Waiting.
- 1:21:13Yeah well I wouldn't have said I despised.
- 1:21:15She's he might have a little trouble for the next two
- 1:21:18seasons, how q and a half Seasons, two and a half Seasons.
- 1:21:24Yeah. A that must be an agonizing and
- 1:21:28then we've got a gentleman called Josh and you are who's
- 1:21:34that? I don't recognize that nice
- 1:21:35fellow has challenged chatting to him today.
- 1:21:37Actually a nice guy, a picture of him.
- 1:21:41Is he handsome? He's got a beard.
- 1:21:44He's handsome, Josh. You are just.
- 1:21:48You are know where my big games. All right.
- 1:21:50So he's put his second favorite Christmas special after
- 1:21:54Christmas Carol. I loved it.
- 1:21:55Very good. Use of the era.
- 1:21:57The ark, great. Not back to 60s who were the
- 1:21:59trial and error. He says he was getting into
- 1:22:02collecting DVDs ahead of the 60th anniversary.
- 1:22:05The paternoster gang at were always a delight.
- 1:22:09We have done your night. So I Civ and intelligent comment
- 1:22:15apart from saying about a Christmas carol, which is a port
- 1:22:18I love for everyone. Does I love it?
- 1:22:24It's, I don't like it. No, I think the the premise of
- 1:22:28the doctor fundamentally fucking with somebody's life, just to
- 1:22:33save his friends is so perverse, you can throw as much Beauty at
- 1:22:39the screen as you like, but the premise is Totally flawed
- 1:22:43anyway. So he yeah.
- 1:22:46I kind of see what you're what you're saying there.
- 1:22:48Yeah. Oh sorry.
- 1:22:49I thought I ruined it for you. I mean he does make him a better
- 1:22:51person. It's the Christmas story after
- 1:22:53all, but take my DVD there. We've got Daniel night, very
- 1:23:03handsome, Daniel nights miles better than the previous.
- 1:23:07Year's Christmas special will. We know which one that was look
- 1:23:10dr. Cox.
- 1:23:10I don't, yeah, so And the bar was set low.
- 1:23:16Did miss a trick bringing back the yeti as opposed to these
- 1:23:19abominable snowmen. I'm sorry.
- 1:23:21Did they did they miss a trick? Not bringing back the yeti as
- 1:23:24opposed to the Abominable Snowman.
- 1:23:26These abominable snowman. He's put his answer would be yes
- 1:23:29but given the redesign of the zygons perhaps it was for the
- 1:23:32best. You know that sequence.
- 1:23:35Where Russell T? Davies knocks on, not too rusty
- 1:23:37Davis, Richard E, G knocks on Rusty.
- 1:23:41Davis would have been amazing. Him.
- 1:23:44Hello agent. Who goes and they open the door.
- 1:23:53And then the, to the snowmen for a rise up behind him.
- 1:23:56Mmm. And they're far scarier than he
- 1:23:58ever could be. So yeah, often the snowmen are
- 1:24:01great II. Think the Snowman?
- 1:24:03A great. I don't know how how they would
- 1:24:05have work. The yeti into it.
- 1:24:08Yeah, I don't quite, I don't know.
- 1:24:10It's that one of work to be honest although Wow, what we I
- 1:24:14didn't mind the, the redesign of the zygons.
- 1:24:17I still think they're better in Terror.
- 1:24:19There's icons, but I didn't mind the redesign and I would love to
- 1:24:23see a redesign Yeti. Actually, it's a shame, they're
- 1:24:26never there, decent marketing at this point, because we could
- 1:24:29have seen those snowmen know. There could be all over
- 1:24:32Christmas, couldn't they? Yeah, evil snowmen with scary
- 1:24:36teeth. I don't see anything.
- 1:24:37Now that that point, I think know, if it'd been done a few
- 1:24:41years before you could have seen, In yeah, the marketing
- 1:24:43team putting out make snowmen around various cities Mazen.
- 1:24:49Well, yeah, this point Doctor Who Foods were a thing of the
- 1:24:51past, then we've got sigh heart, is this the best version of
- 1:24:59Clara, isn't the business of Strax in the memory worm funny.
- 1:25:06And why, why is it? Why do all of Richard grunts?
- 1:25:09Performance is a doctor who feel like he's phoning it in.
- 1:25:13Actually is, I think, I think we answered quietly.
- 1:25:17Clara question, more or less, haven't we about?
- 1:25:20Actually based version do it. Do we find the do, we find the
- 1:25:24business with the worm? Funny?
- 1:25:29All right. Others like and lost touch.
- 1:25:31No. It's just kind of a slapstick
- 1:25:33funny really isn't it. It's not as funny as that bit.
- 1:25:35Where you froze. The paper at Clara and deep
- 1:25:37breath. That guy's hilarious.
- 1:25:42Yeah. Joe short put Joker.
- 1:25:49That is all I met Ian McKellen. Once if that's it, if it has any
- 1:25:53interest as I can't think of anything to say about the
- 1:25:55episode you know. Kim I don't think so short
- 1:25:57lives. Is it so very much?
- 1:25:59Oh no I was I think that was one of the first replies I got on
- 1:26:02here as well. I was like thinking more that we
- 1:26:03going to be reading reading comments of people don't like
- 1:26:06it. So then we have the next the
- 1:26:11next five. Questions of from frasor
- 1:26:14Gregory's, M5 bloodier. Right?
- 1:26:18I'll go fucking bit tonight. All right, let's split through
- 1:26:21them. Does this make a worthy prequel
- 1:26:24to The Abominable Snowman tour is the inclusion of the
- 1:26:27not-so-great intelligence just to pleasing bits of fun way.
- 1:26:33Recall, I didn't really failing. Failure was a prequel to
- 1:26:35abominable snowman, but I think, I think it's fun to have it is,
- 1:26:38of course a special. Yeah.
- 1:26:40It's it's a Christmas special. Is it fine?
- 1:26:43Like, I don't know because it's not it's relying on something
- 1:26:47from the past but it's not it's not heavily relying on something
- 1:26:51from the past it so it can easily be part of the story.
- 1:26:54It doesn't you don't need to have watched The Abominable
- 1:26:57Snowman or the web of fear to understand what's going on the
- 1:27:02doctor. The falls and one of the targets
- 1:27:05fan, wankers two masters. Cybermen of many iterations and
- 1:27:09things like that. Dr. Parra.
- 1:27:11The doctor? Yeah, I think this is fine.
- 1:27:13Like now, and I think even the doctor doesn't quite remember,
- 1:27:17who the great intelligence is I think there's a line in there
- 1:27:19they teach forgotten. So now.
- 1:27:22Yeah, he's also put on a scale of prehistoric Delight to get
- 1:27:26bombed by the brig and pretentious to do you find
- 1:27:29madame vastra? If you say get bombed by the
- 1:27:32brig get bombed by the bridge, you got to be careful of his
- 1:27:38questions. How annoying is she did?
- 1:27:41He say, how pretentious do you find madame vastra?
- 1:27:46I used to I there's a lot more there than I ever thought.
- 1:27:50The time, I like her. I like it.
- 1:27:53I think she's a pretty solid character.
- 1:27:56It's a near-impossible role to play as she does it with some
- 1:27:59dignity. Yeah.
- 1:28:00Yeah. And then we've got to see Fraser
- 1:28:04again. Snog marry Chuck from the top of
- 1:28:07a magic cloud. We've got Simeon.
- 1:28:12Well, it's about also and Strax is Latimer, the fella from
- 1:28:16Silent Witness that the, the, the, the Father, the kids?
- 1:28:21What is hell? I'll do more than snug him.
- 1:28:24So obviously, it's not him. I'll marry Strax because I can
- 1:28:27now be quite fun. And avoid Richard Lee.
- 1:28:30Grahn like the plague. So you jump richly Grant from
- 1:28:33the top of the cloud then truth, remember when he got that role
- 1:28:37in Star Wars and he put that tweet.
- 1:28:39It out that video where he was giggling like a little kid.
- 1:28:42He was so excited to be in Star Wars.
- 1:28:45Yeah. And then he gave this
- 1:28:46performance in Star Wars I'm like awesome across from
- 1:28:55franchise to franchise do. What do I do?
- 1:28:58Do I need to answer this question as well?
- 1:29:00No, no go on. Now the snob Marion Artisans
- 1:29:04course well if I was that way inclined.
- 1:29:11It's not glass of uh, of course, Mary Strax because you know he's
- 1:29:16gonna he's gonna do what you needed to do is name.
- 1:29:19So and yeah, it's very slimming from the top of a cloud.
- 1:29:22You'll feel forever young because if we call a new boy, or
- 1:29:25the time Fraser, again, where would you rank this story?
- 1:29:32In terms of tardis, interior reveals?
- 1:29:34Oh hi, very high close to the bells of st.
- 1:29:38John Yeah, I do have a massive soft spot for the one in rows as
- 1:29:43well. Yes, yes, yes.
- 1:29:47We've never seen it done that way before.
- 1:29:49Now, her running around the outside and then the pullback.
- 1:29:52Yeah, this time we pull in. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:29:57Stop talking like this. So, who Pines best for his Loft?
- 1:30:03Lost, love the 10th or the 11th doctor.
- 1:30:06Still going to 10,000 it. People has the longest.
- 1:30:09Yeah, because the 11th because he just gets over and done with
- 1:30:14pretty quickly. Oh, yeah, of course.
- 1:30:16Yeah. Yeah.
- 1:30:17I misread that question. Yeah, Levin's.
- 1:30:19Yeah, it's fine. By the end of this story that
- 1:30:23it's got its got I say she should go on.
- 1:30:25Jesus Christ, even actually post Clara kapadia, the whole Caesar
- 1:30:31treating Bill like shit. It just be interminable.
- 1:30:35Yeah, oh my God. Yeah.
- 1:30:41So Steven Alexander says, was it actually worth getting a certain
- 1:30:45McAllen voiceover aside from publicity, why bring back the
- 1:30:49great intelligence, but not the yeti?
- 1:30:52I think we kind of touched on, see, it's on in McAllen, but the
- 1:30:57start of it, didn't we? If that's all he was available
- 1:31:01for then. Yeah, if you got a chance of
- 1:31:04doing it. Yeah, we I think we'd all prefer
- 1:31:06to see him doing a more Supply in a more substantial role.
- 1:31:11But if he can, if I can only get into a voiceover, why not
- 1:31:15nothing. It doesn't publicity.
- 1:31:17Yeah. You know, if it's going to bring
- 1:31:19in people watching great idea but the probably the biggest in
- 1:31:24so I can throw at this call string, is I forget he's in it
- 1:31:28and it's so real making alone. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:31:31He's kind of buried. He's buried into it and it isn't
- 1:31:34he. This is more of a comment from
- 1:31:37Joe luallen Llewellyn. We love this.
- 1:31:41On, but I'm in 11 stand. So of course, this was the last
- 1:31:44Doctor Who episode I watched in Afghanistan before.
- 1:31:46Going home about two weeks later, I get why some people
- 1:31:48rate this choir Clara higher than modern Clara.
- 1:31:52Maybe I do too love the staircase and he's got, Richard
- 1:31:55e-grant with an exclamation mark.
- 1:31:57Then if that means he loves him or, yeah, he's coming on hands
- 1:32:02too soon. You know, how is he?
- 1:32:04Wow. Yeah.
- 1:32:07Wow. And then we got just three more
- 1:32:10left, I've got Daniel rawnsley, why does Smith and Coleman?
- 1:32:15Mostly Coleman seem to carry off the whole Victorian things.
- 1:32:18So well, also, however, your mileage may vary on each of the
- 1:32:22paternoster gang funnier or better used here, or in the
- 1:32:25Crimson Horror not just asking because I like the Crimson
- 1:32:28Horror. I think the Crimson Horror feels
- 1:32:32like a backdoor pilot for the first house and it's their best
- 1:32:36showing. Yeah.
- 1:32:37Yeah, I guess so I would say the Crimson Horror but they're still
- 1:32:43very good in this. Oh yeah.
- 1:32:45Yeah, I don't think that, I don't think they ever put in a
- 1:32:47bad performance to be forever in the stories that they're in.
- 1:32:50This is always, they seek the stories that they're in and it
- 1:32:53just works with them. I think the question there,
- 1:32:55Daniel should be why do Smith and Coleman pull off the
- 1:32:59Victoria armor so well and the modern-day so terribly.
- 1:33:05Um yeah hello. But But one joyous episode,
- 1:33:09they're amazing together. Yeah.
- 1:33:12And then we got Paul Quinn. Oh just I think this is just a
- 1:33:17this is just a comment. There are some interesting ideas
- 1:33:20and striking images but in never Co here's another example of
- 1:33:23season seven marking time until just put Angels, Take Manhattan.
- 1:33:28But that was before this. So, and then name of the doctor,
- 1:33:32this should be an important story but it isn't.
- 1:33:36I don't know. I think, I think it's an
- 1:33:37important story, you know. Paul Quinn is no, he is real.
- 1:33:42Responsible for this entire hamster Malarkey, really because
- 1:33:47aged four years old, Paul Quinn, was he lived two doors down from
- 1:33:53me and he invited me over and started reading the excerpts
- 1:33:57from this book called The Doctor Who program guys.
- 1:34:02Oh, wow. And over the course of a decade.
- 1:34:04Got me a sulli hooked on this show, by showing me vhss by
- 1:34:09playing Doctor Who out in his garden.
- 1:34:12Wow. Hey is he is responsible for me
- 1:34:15like and talk to you in the first place so I owe him an
- 1:34:18enormous debt even if I do not agree with his comment.
- 1:34:25Wow, that's crazy. Hold on Hayes Martha was
- 1:34:29fabulous. You know.
- 1:34:31Yeah we lost the last year's so sad and I was brought here, they
- 1:34:34were an Irish family and I can pronounce her name.
- 1:34:37I saw always want to go around there.
- 1:34:39One of their Suites and to play doctor in the garden.
- 1:34:42So, I'll be there knocking on the door, because I couldn't say
- 1:34:45bridey. I used to call her Friday, a
- 1:34:47began Friday. Let me in just remember this
- 1:34:51Vivid image of me. I sort of five years old banging
- 1:34:53on her back gate. Hey, guys!
- 1:34:56So I heart. There's a tailor Youth, and then
- 1:35:01we've got our less last one. And it's a comment.
- 1:35:05It's a Este. Ooh, double our There's a name,
- 1:35:11your name is Andrew store by 5. So, yeah.
- 1:35:18So is, he says, my least favorite 11 outfit.
- 1:35:21It's not bad. It's just, I prefer the Tweed
- 1:35:24and others more. I like this outfit.
- 1:35:26Yeah, I do, too. I like, but we appreciate your
- 1:35:29comment order saying absolutely absolutely.
- 1:35:33So yeah, that's it for the questions.
- 1:35:34And the comments, what a nice range of comments from, you
- 1:35:38know, The Good The Bad and The Ugly.
- 1:35:40Yeah, or brother, you know. So praiseworthy and some
- 1:35:43complaints. Yeah.
- 1:35:47So we still have one more thing to do.
- 1:35:50We do who's going first? You can go first Joe.
- 1:35:57Thank you very much. I suppose I'm on your podcast.
- 1:35:59All those who wish to be just as loud as usual.
- 1:36:04Okay. My number one is Christmas
- 1:36:08specials and Steven Moffat. Go together, beautifully.
- 1:36:13I think he understands what he's got to do.
- 1:36:15Christmas special. He knows how to To turn it
- 1:36:18Christmas into a story and an atmosphere and nine times out of
- 1:36:23ten. He gets it right as well.
- 1:36:24Ian can you can push it? It can push his luck a little
- 1:36:28bit you know Mother Earth for the end of dr.
- 1:36:32Woodard, no wardrobe. Yeah.
- 1:36:34But if I was going to watch a story Christmas week, I wouldn't
- 1:36:40be putting our Voyage of the Damned.
- 1:36:41I'll be putting on Last Christmas.
- 1:36:44Yeah, the husbands of River Song.
- 1:36:47This one. So yeah, Moffat and Christmas
- 1:36:50specials. Yeah, I'm going to go with the
- 1:36:5511th doctor and Clara because this is the best that they are.
- 1:37:04For the short run together, you know, we've touched on it loads
- 1:37:09of times about Victorian Clara, but they also this this kind of
- 1:37:13Broody a doctor. This kind of Darker grumpy a
- 1:37:18doctor, what works really well with Clara?
- 1:37:23And I just wish we'd had seen a little bit more of more of that.
- 1:37:28Yeah, me too more Barrel. Less Clara.
- 1:37:31Yeah. My second thing will be, I think
- 1:37:37the cinematography in this episode, as far as I'm aware,
- 1:37:42and I had someone on here recently, that works in
- 1:37:45television production. There was a budget car, during
- 1:37:49The Moffat era, I've done nothing.
- 1:37:51You can tell at all, I think it feels more expensive than ever
- 1:37:55at this point and there's just A really beautiful imagery in
- 1:37:59this. All the stuff up in the clouds.
- 1:38:01Yeah, the sort of snowy Landscapes that wonderful shots
- 1:38:05of like the snowflakes with a gnashing teeth coming down.
- 1:38:10I think that the imagery is really striking.
- 1:38:13So I'm going to go with. the new Tardis design that was going on,
- 1:38:27I think, After the mess. That is the this series five and
- 1:38:34six and seven a tardis. I think it needed something
- 1:38:40pressure. And this is it's nice.
- 1:38:44It's suits that kind of more depressed doctor.
- 1:38:51It's very stripped back, it's very clean and I think it's, I
- 1:38:57think it's absolutely beautiful. Awful design which only gets
- 1:39:03built upon as Capaldi comes in and it gets it gets better and
- 1:39:08better. I think it's wonderful.
- 1:39:12My it's my second smells good. Yeah.
- 1:39:15Is the pattern Oscar paternoster gang?
- 1:39:19Doesn't mouth on it. I think I'll CD was better at
- 1:39:23surrounding the doctor with Vivid characters and you know,
- 1:39:27you never forget Jackie and and now people are Bart's this was a
- 1:39:33valiant attempt to sort of cash in on that idea of having some
- 1:39:36semi-regulars, even though they didn't last too long, doesn't
- 1:39:41always work. I think it can be a bit.
- 1:39:44The dialogue can be a bit much. Sometimes you got three, good
- 1:39:47actors there. They've all got chemistry, they
- 1:39:49work well with Matt Smith and with Peter Capaldi and they're
- 1:39:52really fun. So yeah, yeah, that's my second
- 1:39:55thing. So I think I will have to go
- 1:39:58with the music. Oosik.
- 1:40:01But this episode it's very it's very Christmasy but it's very
- 1:40:09feels like a score for a film and I said it earlier on, I
- 1:40:14think this is you know, this point Maury gold and really it
- 1:40:20is stride he wasn't writing such bombastic music.
- 1:40:27Now he wasn't telling you how to How to feel he was he was
- 1:40:31gauging gauging, the Steam and what was going on in there, and
- 1:40:34he was creating really nice music memorable music that
- 1:40:39accompanies, it accompanied the episode without being
- 1:40:43overbearing. And the last one, I can't
- 1:40:49believe I'm gonna say this, but I felt dirty.
- 1:40:54It's the Clara Arc. It's here is 7, which is hates
- 1:40:59his peak in this episode. You know what?
- 1:41:05He knows how to he knows how to hook you in with a really good
- 1:41:09solid idea. Okay.
- 1:41:11Who the hell was River song? Yeah, we want to know what's the
- 1:41:14answer, boring? But the hook, It was really good
- 1:41:17you know and what's going on with why?
- 1:41:20They're all these splinters of Clara fascinating idea, you
- 1:41:24know. Really interesting.
- 1:41:25What's the answer? Boring.
- 1:41:27Yeah but it but at this point it was like this.
- 1:41:33We never seen anything like this before.
- 1:41:35This is crazy imaginative way of bringing in a companion.
- 1:41:39You know, the downside of it is is you've had all these versions
- 1:41:42of Clara and the danger is has there.
- 1:41:46When one's better than the one we eventually settle on.
- 1:41:50Yes, there is. Yeah.
- 1:41:53But as an idea, It is really interesting and at this point,
- 1:41:59it's working. Yeah.
- 1:42:01And point after this, it continues to work, but at this
- 1:42:04point, it works really well. And I think, I think often often
- 1:42:09with Moffat, that's it seems to be the journey, but it's more
- 1:42:12entertaining than the Final Destination.
- 1:42:14I think with with a lot of his arcs, which is a little bit sad,
- 1:42:21really? But but yeah, I agree with you.
- 1:42:24It's exciting. It hot.
- 1:42:25Are you in straightaway? Mmm.
- 1:42:28Well, I thought we could have done that and much more Justice.
- 1:42:30You know? Know I've enjoyed that I think
- 1:42:33for an hour-long episode. We've talked for love you too.
- 1:42:36Have we talked about before? I never touched upon.
- 1:42:47It is an episode that deals with mental health is never sewed.
- 1:42:51That deals with fingers that fly off someone's hand and it has up
- 1:42:57in people's bedrooms in the most ghoulish way does.
- 1:43:00And it's an episode which delivers good subplots for all
- 1:43:05of Jodi's Reggie regulars. Mmm.
- 1:43:09If you're still up for it, of course.
- 1:43:10Yeah, absolutely. I've been looking forward to
- 1:43:12doing a Jody episode for a long, long time.
- 1:43:15And the name of the episode is, can you hear me?
- 1:43:19Oh, I can hear you, right? Yeah, the right it.
- 1:43:23I think that episode it is, it's really unreal underrated and
- 1:43:27it's got its it poses a lot of questions as well, you know,
- 1:43:33which we'll get to what we talked about the story.
- 1:43:36Yeah, yeah. It's Yeah, it's one I've been
- 1:43:39looking forward to doing. And yeah.
- 1:43:41What do the snowmen and can you hear me have in common?
- 1:43:48I don't think you're going to find anything.
- 1:43:52There's a bit of blue light in the Tardis in both episodes.
- 1:43:57It's purely personal to me as well.
- 1:43:59This is why you never gonna guess this.
- 1:44:01I think they're both really good episodes with one issue.
- 1:44:07One problem. I think this is richly Grand and
- 1:44:11that is well to be confirmed. Excuse me, I'm guessing on your
- 1:44:18courses. You need to thank me for coming
- 1:44:20on. Okay?
- 1:44:22Well thank you very much for for coming on tonight.
- 1:44:26Joe and I hope you enjoyed watching.
- 1:44:29The snowmen. I supposed to meet a little
- 1:44:32late, almost like a few of these things.
- 1:44:35It's finally nice that somebody to invite me on this day
- 1:44:37podcast, will you, will you be coming back?
- 1:44:40I love call. Will you tell me where?
- 1:44:42And when hm, it's always a pleasure to talk with you.
- 1:44:47Well, we will, we will discuss off mic and let's do it now.
- 1:44:57I'll do that occasionally so soft bed but now.
- 1:45:03Yeah, thank you very much Joe. Anytime anytime.
- 1:45:10Okay, there
