- 0:06Speaker 1: We got all the boys with us today. Matt Holliday
- 0:09Speaker 1: is in a vehicle with Spotty Internet. Cayle Gibson's with us, Hello, Kyle,
- 0:14Speaker 1: and Lance Lynn is with us. Lance just got an
- 0:18Speaker 1: award from Old Miss. He's in the Hall of Fame
- 0:21Speaker 1: and he's kept the hardware.
- 0:24Speaker 2: Wow, congratulation, Wow, congratulations Lance.
- 0:31Speaker 1: Thank thank you. We're real hard on that one. Now, Matt,
- 0:36Speaker 1: tell us who you're with.
- 0:38Speaker 3: I just spilled my smoothie all over my leg, so
- 0:44Speaker 3: you almost got my first cuss word out of me.
- 0:46Speaker 3: Besides Lance, I almost.
- 0:50Speaker 4: Hey, you're the you're the bad boy of this group anyways,
- 0:53Speaker 4: so you just let him fly.
- 0:57Speaker 2: Matt, who give our guests today? Or I'm with Jackson
- 1:04Speaker 2: and Ethan.
- 1:06Speaker 1: Hi, boys, we'll get him.
- 1:11Speaker 3: And yeah, we're headed over to work out. I gotta
- 1:18Speaker 3: be honest. I thought this podcast was at one Central, so.
- 1:26Speaker 1: That's not and then I just went on living my life. Nope, yeah, nope.
- 1:32Speaker 2: But this questions for Jackson or Ethan. We can fire
- 1:35Speaker 2: him off.
- 1:36Speaker 1: Yeah, go ahead, go ahead, fire and figure out how
- 1:41Speaker 1: to get centered here. It's an off center. You get
- 1:45Speaker 1: an off center to get center makes a lot of sense.
- 1:49Speaker 4: And that's weird.
- 1:52Speaker 1: Cole ask a question for U for one of the
- 1:54Speaker 1: Holiday boys, and also let's take a quick moment to
- 1:57Speaker 1: celebrate the fact that he spilled a smoothie on him.
- 2:00Speaker 1: You go ahead, Yeah, absolutely, good job.
- 2:04Speaker 2: Yeah. I think an interesting off season dynamic here. You
- 2:07Speaker 2: guys are with two different teams. You know, Jackson obviously
- 2:11Speaker 2: we have the relationship with Baltimore, but Ethan, Uh, how
- 2:14Speaker 2: do you guys lean into each other? You know, when
- 2:17Speaker 2: you're working on your swing, are you guys like constantly?
- 2:19Speaker 2: Is it more of a competition or do you guys
- 2:21Speaker 2: just have a good feel you know, working with your
- 2:24Speaker 2: dad there about you know what you're trying to do,
- 2:27Speaker 2: and and do you guys give each other critiques or no?
- 2:32Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean I think it's interesting because obviously Jackson's
- 2:36Speaker 5: in the show and I'm in the minor leagues, and
- 2:38Speaker 5: we're both in two different phases of the game.
- 2:40Speaker 1: And I think.
- 2:42Speaker 5: It's a really cool opportunity to stow season to kind
- 2:44Speaker 5: of learn what both of us have kind of gathered
- 2:47Speaker 5: over the last few months and what they gathered over
- 2:49Speaker 5: the whole season of playing his first full season in
- 2:51Speaker 5: the big leagues. And I'm excited I'm excited to learn
- 2:54Speaker 5: from him, and and it takes.
- 2:56Speaker 1: Things and we can kind of work together.
- 2:58Speaker 5: I mean, there's definitely times to compete with each other,
- 3:00Speaker 5: but I think for now it's it's kind of soaking
- 3:03Speaker 5: up information from each other.
- 3:06Speaker 2: Swinging. Jackson's already swinging in the back seat. I can
- 3:10Speaker 2: see him. He's like the field.
- 3:14Speaker 6: I haven't hit since the last game of the year,
- 3:16Speaker 6: so I'm itching a little bit. I'm taking a little
- 3:18Speaker 6: bit of a break, so I'm excited to.
- 3:21Speaker 1: Get back to king. I've been locked in, though, so
- 3:26Speaker 1: I'm a little up on it right now.
- 3:27Speaker 2: I'm in locked in.
- 3:29Speaker 1: How do you guys manage having hitting coaches on your
- 3:32Speaker 1: own teams and then having your dad, Matt Holliday, who
- 3:36Speaker 1: knows as much about hitting as anybody. How do you
- 3:39Speaker 1: guys manage that? I think I think for me it's
- 3:44Speaker 1: it's just communicating.
- 3:47Speaker 6: I've been lucky to have a lot of hitting coaches
- 3:48Speaker 6: that have been pretty open to the fact that I
- 3:50Speaker 6: grew up with the big league dad, and he probably
- 3:53Speaker 6: knows my swing a little bit better than than they might.
- 3:55Speaker 6: But you're also there with them every single day, and
- 3:59Speaker 6: just being ab would have kind of manage what he's
- 4:03Speaker 6: seen and what they're seeing and just kind of ha
- 4:06Speaker 6: an open dialogue and and and involving him has been
- 4:10Speaker 6: helpful for me. And our coaches have been very unwilling
- 4:14Speaker 6: to do that, which has been great. And but but
- 4:19Speaker 6: you're there every day with your hitty coaches, so being
- 4:21Speaker 6: able to trust them and and and lean on what
- 4:24Speaker 6: they see is has been helpful for me.
- 4:26Speaker 1: But uh, it's not too bad.
- 4:28Speaker 6: I've been lucky to have an organization with some great
- 4:30Speaker 6: some great coaches that have been really open to let
- 4:34Speaker 6: him come and watch and and and be a part
- 4:37Speaker 6: of kind of our routine whenever he's in Talents. So
- 4:40Speaker 6: it's it's been really easy in our organization. So I'm
- 4:43Speaker 6: pretty lucky to have that, Jackson.
- 4:47Speaker 1: Uh.
- 4:48Speaker 2: I mean, my time was obviously a lot shorter this
- 4:51Speaker 2: year than I was wanting it to be in Baltimore,
- 4:52Speaker 2: but man, the the three or four weeks I was
- 4:56Speaker 2: there watching the game slow down for you and watching
- 5:00Speaker 2: you're at baths just from you know, end of April
- 5:03Speaker 2: to end of May was awesome. What was that process like?
- 5:08Speaker 2: You know, obviously for you, you met those expectations a
- 5:14Speaker 2: lot of steps, right, I'm sure you wanted to do
- 5:16Speaker 2: better than you expect a lot out of yourself. But
- 5:18Speaker 2: how did this season kind of morph into you know,
- 5:21Speaker 2: you really slowing the game down and and you know,
- 5:24Speaker 2: experiencing some extreme hot streaks where you you carried that
- 5:28Speaker 2: offense for for a few of those games that I
- 5:29Speaker 2: was there.
- 5:31Speaker 6: Yeah, I mean, I think just getting more comfortable helped
- 5:34Speaker 6: a lot. Facing guys for the second time made it
- 5:38Speaker 6: a lot easier. But just just being aggressive and not
- 5:41Speaker 6: being afraid to to swing and miss and make mistakes
- 5:44Speaker 6: was was really helpful for me. And I got a
- 5:48Speaker 6: pretty neat opportunity to be able to lead off every
- 5:50Speaker 6: day and just kind of go out there and and
- 5:53Speaker 6: fail but but learn from it.
- 5:55Speaker 1: And that was that was helpful for me, just to
- 5:58Speaker 1: be able to.
- 5:59Speaker 6: Go out there and and know that I'm in the
- 6:00Speaker 6: lineup no matter who I'm facing. And yeah, it was
- 6:04Speaker 6: a great experience this year, getting so many at bats
- 6:06Speaker 6: against so many good pictures. And I'm really looking forward
- 6:09Speaker 6: to to next year and continuing to build off that.
- 6:12Speaker 6: But you know, the lead on guys like like Gunner
- 6:15Speaker 6: and WeSC and ADLEI and and their experiences and just
- 6:19Speaker 6: going out there and having fun and and not worried
- 6:22Speaker 6: about the results.
- 6:25Speaker 1: How about you, then, what was the first year of
- 6:27Speaker 1: pro ball like for you? What what were the adjustments?
- 6:31Speaker 2: Like?
- 6:32Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean the game is obviously a lot different
- 6:36Speaker 5: in high school when it comes to the picture and
- 6:38Speaker 5: the defense and just the overall overall game. It's just
- 6:42Speaker 5: so much different, such a step above the composition at
- 6:45Speaker 5: high school. But I think learning how to play every
- 6:49Speaker 5: single day was a big adjustment for me. Just being
- 6:51Speaker 5: able to hurt my body in my mind, to be
- 6:53Speaker 5: able to flush bad games and and also be able
- 6:56Speaker 5: to soak up information from good games. It's just a
- 7:00Speaker 5: really good learning experience for me. And that's kind of
- 7:02Speaker 5: how I went into it. It was more of a
- 7:04Speaker 5: learning experience. I was really just wanted to learn and
- 7:08Speaker 5: obviously get prepared for next season in my first full year.
- 7:11Speaker 1: And it was great. I got to learn a lot
- 7:14Speaker 1: of things.
- 7:15Speaker 5: I got guts, really beat around some awesome guys and
- 7:18Speaker 5: awesome coaches, and it was a It was a great experience.
- 7:22Speaker 1: It was I just wonder, when you guys are together,
- 7:26Speaker 1: who decides to drive? Because right now it sure has
- 7:29Speaker 1: a feel of driving. Miss Maddie, like, does does that right? Passenger?
- 7:37Speaker 1: Because of his age or how does that work out?
- 7:40Speaker 5: Well, you know, we actually went to the we're big
- 7:43Speaker 5: OC wrestling fans, so we went to the wrestling duels
- 7:47Speaker 5: the last few days in Tulsa.
- 7:48Speaker 1: So he's been driving me for the last few days.
- 7:51Speaker 5: So I'll, uh, I'll take him around for for as
- 7:53Speaker 5: long as he needs. It's like, I gotta I gotta
- 7:56Speaker 5: repay him on that.
- 7:57Speaker 1: What an old joke? Are you making an old joke? Yeah,
- 8:00Speaker 1: he's going the old guy.
- 8:03Speaker 4: Next he was like, can't drive because the hip replacement
- 8:06Speaker 4: he was going there.
- 8:08Speaker 1: I thought that's what there was.
- 8:10Speaker 2: That was in.
- 8:12Speaker 3: You guys, You guys want to see you want to
- 8:13Speaker 3: see you want to see my leg?
- 8:16Speaker 1: Yes, that one's not.
- 8:20Speaker 2: That's Oh gosh, what happened? I don't know are but
- 8:28Speaker 2: that was interesting.
- 8:30Speaker 1: Grated show the kids.
- 8:33Speaker 3: I'm showing Smoothie all over my leg that I'm currently
- 8:38Speaker 3: riding around, all over and all over the seat and
- 8:42Speaker 3: all over Ethan's seat.
- 8:43Speaker 2: Is car is staying. It's Ethan's Ethan's truck.
- 8:49Speaker 1: It's not that new, but it's nice. What do you go.
- 8:53Speaker 2: I'm sure he never spilled anything in your car when
- 8:55Speaker 2: he was a kid either, So fine, oh yeah, yeah,
- 8:58Speaker 2: this is yeah for it's a.
- 9:00Speaker 7: T r X.
- 9:01Speaker 1: It's nice, nice, And what flavor smoothie did you get? Matt?
- 9:05Speaker 1: I think everyone wants to know.
- 9:09Speaker 3: It was uh, strawberry and pineapple and cranberry. There's about
- 9:16Speaker 3: three drinks left out of forty five. I would have say,
- 9:21Speaker 3: probably have to start here. Yeah, it's got a lot
- 9:27Speaker 3: of lake here on it.
- 9:29Speaker 2: So one of them boys buy you a new smoothie.
- 9:32Speaker 2: Whenever you guys get done working out, you know, have
- 9:35Speaker 2: them take down smoothie a lot too.
- 9:39Speaker 1: My fault. Now listen, Matt, we have we have to
- 9:43Speaker 1: break here. Do you want to stay with us or
- 9:46Speaker 1: do you want to clean up and carry on the
- 9:48Speaker 1: day with your kids. It's up to you. Because you
- 9:51Speaker 1: were a yeomen, yeomen's work for joining us. Well, how
- 9:56Speaker 1: much longer is the show? We're gonna take a minute
- 10:00Speaker 1: long break. We're gonna come back. We're gonna talk about
- 10:03Speaker 1: the American League MVP Award, and then we're gonna take
- 10:07Speaker 1: another break, and then we're gonna come back and say goodbye.
- 10:10Speaker 1: That's our run, Den, So it's up to you. You
- 10:13Speaker 1: got the smoothie on your leg, you're with your kids.
- 10:16Speaker 1: We appreciate you coming along. We'd love to hear your
- 10:18Speaker 1: opinions on whether or not cal Rawley got jobbed a
- 10:22Speaker 1: little bit. You want to stay with us.
- 10:24Speaker 3: Yeah, I can stay.
- 10:25Speaker 1: It's not a long ad.
- 10:26Speaker 3: I mean, we don't have any sponsors doing beautiful.
- 10:31Speaker 1: Everyone stay where you are. You are watching Cardinal Territory AJ.
- 10:36Speaker 7: We're gonna do things a little bit differently here. I
- 10:39Speaker 7: am wearing the perfect gene and I remember seeing ads
- 10:43Speaker 7: for the perfect gene, like most comfortable fit ever, perfect
- 10:47Speaker 7: fit on your body, and I was like, I'm not
- 10:50Speaker 7: buying it. Now I'm buying it and we're showing it
- 10:54Speaker 7: off on FT.
- 10:55Speaker 8: Please please get off my desk. First of all, Scott.
- 10:57Speaker 8: Second of all, I was with you. I was skeptical
- 10:59Speaker 8: about perfect and then I got a pair and the
- 11:02Speaker 8: fitting was perfect. And my body is not hard to fix,
- 11:04Speaker 8: is I got a big old rear and big old
- 11:06Speaker 8: legs from years of squatting, and they fit perfectly. They're stretchy,
- 11:09Speaker 8: they're comfortable, they're fashionable, They're everything I look for in
- 11:12Speaker 8: a gene. And now I have an extra pair and
- 11:14Speaker 8: I'm gonna wear them all the time.
- 11:16Speaker 7: Foul fifteen is the code at the Perfect Gene dot

- 11:34Speaker 7: Please support the show and tell them foul Territory sent you.
- 11:37Speaker 2: I got you.
- 11:39Speaker 1: Thank you so much that Aj Prazinski didn't actually model
- 11:44Speaker 1: those genes. He had the other guy do it.
- 11:49Speaker 2: I love.
- 11:53Speaker 1: I hear that those genes are smoothie repellent. But speaking
- 11:56Speaker 1: of big nine quarters, as Aj brought up in terms
- 12:01Speaker 1: of how jeans fit him, we had the American League
- 12:05Speaker 1: MVP award handed out and went to Aaron Judge. Dominant player.
- 12:11Speaker 1: Offensive numbers mind boggling, We get it. Cal Rowley came
- 12:16Speaker 1: in second, had sixty homers, caught third most innings of
- 12:22Speaker 1: any catcher, and I think he was the third rated
- 12:24Speaker 1: defensive catcher in the league. So my question, and we'll
- 12:29Speaker 1: start with lancel In on this one, do you think
- 12:31Speaker 1: that he that Cal might have gotten jobbed a little
- 12:34Speaker 1: bit because the catching aspect maybe didn't factor in as
- 12:38Speaker 1: much as it should have.
- 12:40Speaker 4: I think if you if you look at it like
- 12:42Speaker 4: right away, you could say, yeah, man, I thought he
- 12:46Speaker 4: might have gotten jobbed a little bit. And then you
- 12:48Speaker 4: start breaking down Aaron's numbers and what he was able
- 12:52Speaker 4: to accomplish this year, even with the time that he
- 12:55Speaker 4: missed with injury, he put up some pretty darn good
- 12:59Speaker 4: numbers and in a lineup that you know, really didn't
- 13:03Speaker 4: go without him when he was out during that time,
- 13:06Speaker 4: they were really not a great lineup. So he was
- 13:09Speaker 4: able to do a lot of things to carry that
- 13:11Speaker 4: lineup and made them what they were. So when you
- 13:14Speaker 4: really dig deep in the numbers, which that's the world
- 13:16Speaker 4: we live in now, No, Kyle did not get a job.
- 13:20Speaker 4: But when you look at what he did catching, and
- 13:22Speaker 4: any anybody that put up those numbers as a catcher,
- 13:25Speaker 4: you know, it's hard to you know, say, hey, they
- 13:27Speaker 4: shouldn't have won the MVP. But with the numbers Aaron
- 13:29Speaker 4: put up, I was surprised, to be honest with you,
- 13:32Speaker 4: But when I deep down dive on the numbers, it
- 13:34Speaker 4: was like, okay, he had he had a heck of
- 13:36Speaker 4: a year.
- 13:37Speaker 1: Yeah, offensively. There's no question I think Kyle that Aaron
- 13:43Speaker 1: Juck had had the better season. But you take into
- 13:47Speaker 1: account the importance of a catcher and as a pitcher,
- 13:50Speaker 1: you know all about that, Yeah, I mean one, And I.
- 13:55Speaker 2: Think it's important to see the difference in the MVP voting, right,
- 13:59Speaker 2: you know, show Hey was unanimous over a DH and
- 14:03Speaker 2: Kyle Schwarber. Show Hay was a DH for most year
- 14:06Speaker 2: and then he made some you know, he made starts
- 14:08Speaker 2: down the stretch, which I think, you know, really made
- 14:10Speaker 2: him the unanimous decision. But this was what sixty forty
- 14:15Speaker 2: split on this voting, So it's not like it was
- 14:18Speaker 2: a unanimous for Judge. I mean, he's two votes away,
- 14:22Speaker 2: a two vote swing from it being fifty to fifty
- 14:24Speaker 2: you know, first place votes. So I think it was
- 14:27Speaker 2: a close vote, which is how it should have been.
- 14:30Speaker 2: But I mean, I think, you know, we talked about
- 14:32Speaker 2: cal being the one making history, which he did. Aaron
- 14:35Speaker 2: Judge was like one of four players to do you know,
- 14:38Speaker 2: this statistic for the year, one of three players ever
- 14:40Speaker 2: to do this statistic on the year. Like, he had
- 14:43Speaker 2: multiple areas where he also made history this year. So
- 14:47Speaker 2: I just hesitate to say that you know a catcher,
- 14:51Speaker 2: she either always win it or a DH should never
- 14:54Speaker 2: win it, because even though Aaron Judge, you know, DH
- 14:56Speaker 2: for most of the year because of some health stuff,
- 14:59Speaker 2: he's still probably we impacted the game, uh, just as
- 15:02Speaker 2: much or more than cal Rawley did. So if we
- 15:05Speaker 2: can't give it to d HS, then you know, Kyle
- 15:07Speaker 2: Schwarber never should have gotten all the second place votes,
- 15:10Speaker 2: is how I look at it. But I think you're
- 15:12Speaker 2: looking for the most all around best player, and Aaron Judge,
- 15:16Speaker 2: with what he did offensively, probably put himself, you know,
- 15:21Speaker 2: just a little bit above cal.
- 15:25Speaker 3: What do you think, man, Yeah, I mean, I think
- 15:28Speaker 3: when you look at overall, like if you dive in,
- 15:31Speaker 3: like Lan said, on the offensive numbers, like Aaron's season
- 15:35Speaker 3: was historically like one of the greatest seasons of all
- 15:38Speaker 3: time offensively on some of the numbers that that if
- 15:42Speaker 3: you look a little closer, you know, like if you
- 15:46Speaker 3: compare some of the those numbers to cal Rawlely, he
- 15:51Speaker 3: I mean, he out hit him by so far that.
- 15:59Speaker 1: It'd be it'd be tough.
- 16:00Speaker 3: Like I look, I I give a lot of credit
- 16:03Speaker 3: for catching and catching that much, but I just don't
- 16:07Speaker 3: think I look and I and and people say there's
- 16:09Speaker 3: no East coast bias. There's one hundred percent in East
- 16:12Speaker 3: Coast bias.
- 16:12Speaker 1: So if cal.
- 16:13Speaker 3: Rawly was playing for the Yankees and Aaron Judge was playing,
- 16:17Speaker 3: uh for the Mariners, I think I think it probably
- 16:21Speaker 3: would have gone the other way.
- 16:24Speaker 2: But I mean, look, Aaron. Aaron is a good friend
- 16:28Speaker 2: of mine.
- 16:28Speaker 1: I love Aaron.
- 16:29Speaker 3: He's he impacts the game like he is. He's the
- 16:33Speaker 3: most valuable outside of show. Hey, he's the most valuable
- 16:36Speaker 3: player in baseball. And so I think the right guy
- 16:43Speaker 3: got it. But like I said, I think if he
- 16:45Speaker 3: if cal Rawley was catching every day for the Yankees
- 16:47Speaker 3: and Aaron Judge was playing for the Mariners, I think
- 16:50Speaker 3: cal Rawly would have been the MVP.
- 16:52Speaker 1: Do you think they ought to include postseason stats in
- 16:55Speaker 1: that or do you like it the way it is?
- 16:59Speaker 2: I don't really.
- 17:00Speaker 3: I think it's a postseason award. I mean, I think
- 17:03Speaker 3: I think it's a regular season award.
- 17:05Speaker 1: They give MVPs.
- 17:10Speaker 2: You on board with that too, Yeah, Yeah, I agree,
- 17:13Speaker 2: I think it's just MVP for the season. Yeah, I don't.
- 17:15Speaker 2: I don't think it should be way based on how
- 17:18Speaker 2: somebody carries the team through the playoffs, you know, because
- 17:21Speaker 2: then I think you're adding in guys that have amazing
- 17:23Speaker 2: playoff runs that you know, maybe they didn't have, you know,
- 17:26Speaker 2: the best one sixty two. You know, that's pretty how
- 17:29Speaker 2: I look?
- 17:31Speaker 1: All right? The warmer weather is here in Saint Louis.
- 17:34Speaker 1: We're kind of spread all over the place. Uh. Summer is, however,
- 17:39Speaker 1: long gone in the rear view mirror. But now is
- 17:42Speaker 1: the time you start thinking about turning your backyard into
- 17:46Speaker 1: an oasis, a pool for the kids, a fire pit
- 17:50Speaker 1: for the cool nights. We're talking about a place where
- 17:52Speaker 1: memories are made. At Merrimack Pooling Outdoors, they've been bringing
- 17:57Speaker 1: those visions to life for twenty five years. Family and

- 19:41Speaker 1: Back with the boys on Cardinal Territory. Uh, the last
- 19:46Speaker 1: topic for our program today and I'm going to start
- 19:49Speaker 1: with Lancelin on this and rotate back. By the way,
- 19:52Speaker 1: can you hold up your Hall of Fame memento again please?
- 19:56Speaker 1: I like seeing that. I like problems. Listen, he's nice,
- 20:00Speaker 1: very nice, beautiful. Let's talk. Yeah, it's beautiful. Let's talk
- 20:04Speaker 1: Cardinals for a second. JJ Weatherholt Okay, is the guy
- 20:08Speaker 1: everyone has talked about this seat. Okay, Uh, one of
- 20:12Speaker 1: the young guys that should be featured. You would think
- 20:15Speaker 1: this year. Are we all on board that he's the
- 20:18Speaker 1: guy that the Cardinals as much as anyone, are kind
- 20:22Speaker 1: of banking their hopes on it. I'll start with you Lance, Yeah.
- 20:26Speaker 4: I mean I think you're looking at uh, you know,
- 20:28Speaker 4: their their farm system and what they've got going on,
- 20:31Speaker 4: what he did last year age wise, and he fits
- 20:34Speaker 4: what they're trying to do. So I think if you
- 20:37Speaker 4: don't start him at the big leagues, it's kind of like, Hey,
- 20:39Speaker 4: you just told us that you're gonna go this youth
- 20:41Speaker 4: movement and do all this, and a guy that should
- 20:44Speaker 4: be one of your maybe corner zones, middle pieces or whatever,
- 20:48Speaker 4: it's not here. So I think you look at him
- 20:50Speaker 4: as a as a second baseman with him and with
- 20:53Speaker 4: him and Mason went up the middle, and then you know,
- 20:56Speaker 4: and then you can kind of go around that and
- 20:57Speaker 4: see what you want to do this year. I think
- 21:00Speaker 4: you think he's a good fit at second base too,
- 21:02Speaker 4: because his hit he's going to be above average second basement,
- 21:05Speaker 4: and he's going to his hit tool is going to
- 21:07Speaker 4: make him an all star caliber second basement. I think
- 21:10Speaker 4: if you try to move him to third or something
- 21:12Speaker 4: like that, the power maybe not might not be there
- 21:15Speaker 4: or something like that, but you put him at his
- 21:16Speaker 4: best defensive position and go let him play. And if
- 21:19Speaker 4: that's second base, I think that actually makes him above
- 21:22Speaker 4: average player all around, the all around at second base.
- 21:25Speaker 4: So with him and Mason up the middle, I think
- 21:27Speaker 4: it's a hey, let him, let him go play and
- 21:30Speaker 4: see where we're at around him.
- 21:33Speaker 1: Last year he had a monster year at a couple
- 21:36Speaker 1: of levels, but at triple A three fourteen batting average,
- 21:38Speaker 1: ten homers, just one hundred and eighty five at BETCH
- 21:41Speaker 1: nine seventy eight ops. But Kyle, do you agree second
- 21:45Speaker 1: base is probably the best position or does it not
- 21:49Speaker 1: matter and you try to mix and match.
- 21:53Speaker 2: Well, I don't know, I think you know this would uh,
- 21:57Speaker 2: this would also be a great question for Jackson right,
- 21:59Speaker 2: you know, went through that a little bit, kind of
- 22:01Speaker 2: shifting from short to second and kind of doing that.
- 22:04Speaker 2: But I think as long as he's playing second base
- 22:06Speaker 2: in the minor leagues and he's you know, he's prepared
- 22:08Speaker 2: for that, then I think that's a great thing to do.
- 22:11Speaker 2: I also don't think I would give up on him
- 22:13Speaker 2: playing shortstop. I think the days that you give Mason
- 22:16Speaker 2: a break, you know, maybe you shift JJ over there,
- 22:19Speaker 2: and then you find other days to give JJ a break.
- 22:23Speaker 2: But I mean, I think we heard from Jackson earlier
- 22:24Speaker 2: about the value in getting consistent of bats and the
- 22:28Speaker 2: value of being able to struggle at times, and then
- 22:31Speaker 2: watching him slow the game down and really kind of
- 22:33Speaker 2: feel what that success is going to look like when
- 22:35Speaker 2: it's sustained and he kind of gets his speed wet
- 22:38Speaker 2: and figures out the hitter that he is at the
- 22:39Speaker 2: big leagues. I think JJ can go through that same progression.
- 22:43Speaker 2: And I don't necessarily think we should say this is
- 22:47Speaker 2: who they're staking their future on. I don't think that's
- 22:49Speaker 2: good for any player to necessarily have, you know, that
- 22:52Speaker 2: attached to him. I think there's a lot of good
- 22:54Speaker 2: players and a lot of good things that need to
- 22:56Speaker 2: go right for the Cardinals to have this sustained success
- 22:59Speaker 2: going forward. But yeah, I think JJ Weatherhill probably expects
- 23:02Speaker 2: to be a big piece of that, and I think
- 23:04Speaker 2: the Cardinals should expect him to be a big piece
- 23:06Speaker 2: of that.
- 23:08Speaker 1: Now, Matt, your son, Jackson had, as Cal mentioned some
- 23:11Speaker 1: of the you know that pressure put on him, and
- 23:14Speaker 1: I was being a top pick and kind of moved
- 23:17Speaker 1: along quickly. How much pressure is it, you know, you
- 23:20Speaker 1: you dealt with your son during that period.
- 23:24Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, I certainly think that their pressure comes
- 23:28Speaker 3: with that, But I also think that, you know, we're
- 23:31Speaker 3: constantly training young players to control what they can control.
- 23:35Speaker 3: He can't control how much pressure, how much expectations, or
- 23:40Speaker 3: you know, what people think or what people expect. All
- 23:44Speaker 3: he can do is keep getting better, keep working, keep training,
- 23:48Speaker 3: keep practicing, keep you know, whatever position they play him at,
- 23:51Speaker 3: keep working at short, keep working at second, work at third.
- 23:55Speaker 3: The idea is to play in the major leagues and
- 23:57Speaker 3: to play well and to play for a long time.
- 24:00Speaker 3: And the more positions you can play at a high level,
- 24:03Speaker 3: the better chance you have of being in the lineup
- 24:05Speaker 3: every day. And I think that's what players want. I mean,
- 24:07Speaker 3: I think he would say, put me wherever you want.
- 24:10Speaker 3: As long as I'm in the lineup, that's where I
- 24:12Speaker 3: want to be. So I think it's smart for him
- 24:15Speaker 3: to train and not worry about the outside expectations. And
- 24:19Speaker 3: sometimes that's easier said than done, but I certainly think that,
- 24:23Speaker 3: you know, as we continue, you know, with the social
- 24:26Speaker 3: media and all the things that go into this, to
- 24:29Speaker 3: teaching young players how to focus on things that they
- 24:33Speaker 3: can control, and to block out the outside noise, to
- 24:36Speaker 3: get off social media, to not ride the highs and
- 24:39Speaker 3: lows of other people's opinions and just get back to
- 24:43Speaker 3: work and just you know, if you love the practice
- 24:46Speaker 3: of it, if you love to get out there and compete,
- 24:49Speaker 3: focus on those things. And I think that that's something
- 24:51Speaker 3: that frees you up as a player to go out
- 24:55Speaker 3: and play without this heaviness of expectation, or this heaviness
- 24:59Speaker 3: of what other people think about you, or what you
- 25:01Speaker 3: should or shouldn't be, or how good you should be.
- 25:06Speaker 3: Just go out there and play and compete like you
- 25:08Speaker 3: have since you were twelve. And he's got he's got
- 25:10Speaker 3: tons of talent, and I think he's gonna be in
- 25:12Speaker 3: the big leagues. And I think it's interesting because if
- 25:15Speaker 3: he's ready to play second base, I think it opens
- 25:18Speaker 3: up the Cardinals the option. I keep reading that there
- 25:20Speaker 3: are a lot of teams are interested in Donovan. And
- 25:23Speaker 3: if you can go out and get a really good
- 25:26Speaker 3: player for Brendan Donovan and play weather Hold at second
- 25:30Speaker 3: to make your team that much closer to a playoff
- 25:33Speaker 3: slash World Series.
- 25:34Speaker 1: Contender, then you know that that's a value.
- 25:37Speaker 3: And so I just think for young players more and
- 25:41Speaker 3: more now than ever, is to keep your circle tight
- 25:44Speaker 3: and and just go out there and play and not
- 25:46Speaker 3: worry about what everybody else thinks.
- 25:49Speaker 1: Lance, how did you learn to block out the exterior noise? No,
- 25:55Speaker 1: just don't listen.
- 25:56Speaker 4: It's that simple, right. I was as hard of hearing anyways,
- 26:01Speaker 4: as as Matt and Kyle know as being my teammate.
- 26:05Speaker 4: So that was my.
- 26:06Speaker 1: Way of doing it.
- 26:07Speaker 4: People that aren't in the clubhouse, aren't with you every day,
- 26:10Speaker 4: aren't on the field with you. They don't matter, So
- 26:14Speaker 4: don't pay attention to them. You know, be where you're
- 26:16Speaker 4: supposed to be, be with who you're supposed to be with,
- 26:19Speaker 4: and you know, do what you have to do to
- 26:21Speaker 4: make the people around you better and help you help
- 26:24Speaker 4: your team win and everything else to take care of itself.
- 26:28Speaker 1: kN Let me ask you this. You're the cardinal organization.
- 26:32Speaker 1: You were there, so you know the lay of the land.
- 26:35Speaker 1: A little bit right, bad season or not a great season.
- 26:40Speaker 1: New president of baseball ops and they're talking about the future.
- 26:44Speaker 1: Fans didn't turn out last year. What do you think
- 26:47Speaker 1: the reaction would be if weather Hold was not on
- 26:50Speaker 1: the major league roster this year?
- 26:55Speaker 2: I mean, I I don't know. I think it kind
- 26:58Speaker 2: of goes back to what Lance just said. Obviously, you know,
- 27:00Speaker 2: the players on the field play the game for the
- 27:03Speaker 2: fans and for whatever motivates them. Right, you know, we're
- 27:06Speaker 2: out there trying to do our best and put on
- 27:08Speaker 2: show and entertain People in the front office are not
- 27:11Speaker 2: there for that same thing. They are there to run
- 27:13Speaker 2: a team how they see fit to run a team.
- 27:16Speaker 2: And just like Lance says, you know, taking advice and
- 27:19Speaker 2: criticism from somebody, I was, you know, taught. If it's
- 27:23Speaker 2: somebody that I wouldn't take advice from, why would I
- 27:25Speaker 2: listen to their criticism and let their words affect me.
- 27:28Speaker 2: You know, the people in the front office, whether it's
- 27:31Speaker 2: right or wrong, they're not going to listen to the fans,
- 27:33Speaker 2: whether JJ Wetherholt SHO is starting the big leagues or not.
- 27:36Speaker 2: Their job is to figure out what is the best
- 27:38Speaker 2: way to make JJ Weatherholt the best ten or fifteen
- 27:41Speaker 2: year Cardinal and the best player he can be long term.
- 27:43Speaker 2: And if that means getting him a few extra bats
- 27:46Speaker 2: or a few extra rings in a second, they're going
- 27:48Speaker 2: to do it. And then, you know, I think it's
- 27:50Speaker 2: in the Cardinals fans to trust that front office and
- 27:53Speaker 2: trust him with those decisions that he's going to make,
- 27:55Speaker 2: or just not worry about it. Didn't go watch the
- 27:58Speaker 2: game or watch on TV and enjoy the other great
- 28:00Speaker 2: players that are gonna play, because there's gonna be a
- 28:02Speaker 2: lot of good players out there.
- 28:04Speaker 1: Smartest panel in the Baseball podcast universe. You guys were
- 28:08Speaker 1: great today, Matt. Thank you for having your sons Jackson
- 28:12Speaker 1: Ethan making a cameo. We appreciate that. We also appreciate

- 28:21Speaker 1: We look forward to doing it again. That will do
- 28:23Speaker 1: it for this edition of Cardinal Territory. We'll see you
