- 0:00This is a workplace case study, fictionalized details, real executive patterns.
- 0:06What you're about to hear is not about food or manners or being nice, it's about how people show you who they are before money is at risk.
- 0:19You are listening to Kathie's Coaching podcast and workplace case studies.
- 0:24Imagine you've hired me to analyze a business relationship.
- 0:29We go to lunch together, not to socialize, but to observe.
- 0:34This is a real technique I use with founders and CEOs because people are most themselves when they think nothing important is happening.
- 0:45The lunch we order at the counter, one person immediately dismisses a menu item.
- 0:53I would never order that.
- 0:55It is always bad here.
- 0:58No curiosity, no neutrality, just critique that matters.
- 1:04Then there's friction about substitutions, fries instead of onion rings.
- 1:10Jalapenos on the side, make them fresh Jalapenos on the side.
- 1:16None of this is communicated clearly at the counter, but the expectation is that it will be handled anyway.
- 1:24The wait staff moment, the food arrives.
- 1:28The waitress blamed for an order she never received.
- 1:31There is no kindness, no assumption of good intent, just correction.
- 1:38As a consultant, this is where I'm already taking notes because how someone treats people who can't push back is how they treat people when they think they have leverage.
- 1:50The pattern emerges.
- 1:53The complaints continue about the food, about the service, about other people who complain.
- 1:59There is no resolution energy, just commentary This.
- 2:04Is important.
- 2:06Because this is not stress behavior.
- 2:09This is baseline behavior.
- 2:13The business transaction.
- 2:15Now, let's talk about why this lunch matters.
- 2:19Imagine this is an$80,000 business transaction.
- 2:24Only$5,000 of the product has been used.
- 2:28The remaining$75,000 is returned.
- 2:33The product is taken without confirmation.
- 2:36No receipt, no acknowledgement, no agreement.
- 2:40Weeks later, an invoice arrives for the full amount.
- 2:44No discussion.
- 2:46No clarification.
- 2:48No professional follow up.
- 2:50Just an expectation that confusion will resolve in their favor.
- 2:56The translation for executives.
- 2:59Here's what I would say to my client.
- 3:03This behavior is consistent.
- 3:05The same person who complains instead of clarifies, blames instead of confirms, avoids direct communication, and most importantly, externalizes responsibility will do the same in contracts, billing and conflict.
- 3:25This is not about intention.
- 3:27It's about predictability.
- 3:31The decision.
- 3:32At this point, there are only two options.
- 3:35Implement extremely clear written and enforced boundaries.
- 3:41Number two, discontinue the relationship.
- 3:45What you do not do is continue informal interactions and hope it improves.
- 3:51Hope is not a strategy.
- 3:54Why this matters.
- 3:56Most people lose money not because of bad deals, but because they ignored early signals that felt too small to name.
- 4:06This is what I do.
- 4:07I spot patterns early.
- 4:09While the cost of changing course is still low.
- 4:12All right.
- 4:13That's my episode for today.
- 4:15I trust that you found it useful.
- 4:17If you are navigating a business relationship and something feels off, there's usually a pattern already showing you why.
- 4:25This has been a workplace case study with Kathie.
