- 2:15All right, well, now it's time for today's episode of the Adventures of
- 2:17Philip Marlowe from September the tenth of nineteen forty nine. Here now is the
- 2:23Ruskin Hickory. Get this and get it straight. Crime is a sucker's road,
- 2:28and those who travel and wind up in the gut of the prison of
- 2:30the grave. The lady tourist was a school teacher right after Glamor, and
- 2:34she got it, but only after she learned that in Hollywood the three hours
- 2:37could be reading done in the dock room, writing found in a dead man's
- 2:40pocket, arithmetic that added up to murder times two. From the pet of
- 2:46Raymond Trendler, outsetting author of crime fiction, comes his most famous character in
- 2:52the Adventures of Philip Marlowe. Now with Gerald Moore starred as Philip Barlowe.
- 3:06We Bring You Tonight's transcribe story. The Rust and Hickory was hot in my
- 3:24apartment, even at ten o'clock at night. The sultry wind blowing through curtains
- 3:29at the far side of the room didn't help a bit. It was a
- 3:32kind of night that made me wish I was something else, a butcher,
- 3:35baker, candlestick make or anything. After a long hot day spent in the
- 3:39downtown courts of law listening to the petty arguments of a petty lossony case,
- 3:45I was tired of petty people. The paper I had picked up on my
- 3:47way home wasn't helping any ten killed in an air crash. Metal cruelty,
- 3:53says local songbird. I made myself another high ball, lots of ice,
- 3:58easy with water. Picked up the paper again. It was still more of
- 4:01the same. Scionistic killed in office on Sunset's strip Scientist. He hit the
- 4:09papers before Bookie B minus picture producer, general racketeer. Somehow, I wasn't
- 4:15too surprised he was on the receiving end for a change. My drink was
- 4:18good for ten more pages of equally dull reading, and I was set for
- 4:21the next in line. When the phone rang, mister Philamarlow was the first
- 4:27attractive voice I'd heard all day. Mister marlow you know I thought you might
- 4:31be fun. My name's Joan Rushing. I'm only here in Hollywood from Franky
- 4:35on the Braska on a vacation, and I wanted to have some fun,
- 4:39you know, see the night clubs. Wait a minute, Joan Hollo the
- 4:43teacher. Hey, let's back up a little. Hunh Your name is Joan
- 4:47Russing. You're from Ferndale, Nebraska, which you're right I've never heard of.
- 4:50Also, you're a school teacher. That much I got with the rest
- 4:54about the site. The last part that trouble was they're the one in the
- 4:58scene. I wanted to step out Nike up the movie stars glamor. But
- 5:00he didn't end up like that because he was shot in the bag was showing.
- 5:04His name's Aubrey Nichols. He's the man who took me, not to
- 5:06show me the club. Anyhow, after it happened, I ran, why
- 5:10why the publicity? Of course, mister Marlowe, i'd lose my job the
- 5:15iris. Yeah you said that, honey, Now look where are you?
- 5:16Jones the jewelproom hits the bar on sunset and Latian bar. You'll come right
- 5:20over hot, huh yeah, I'll come right over. High go bye a
- 5:26Jones, Hey, miss marlow Yeah, but where are you here? Hurry?
- 5:41Okay, Herry, it is? Oh now tell me why all the
- 5:45secrecy? And oh then why what are you staring it? You? I
- 5:51expected braids, jone horn, rims, calico maybe not ice blue satin,
- 5:57drape plunging and uh yes, thought at the top money and slowed this time.
- 6:03Huh well, yesterday I met this man, miss Aubrey Nikol. I
- 6:06mentioned, Oh he's really nice, mister Marlowe, he's a photographer. Had
- 6:11the Darling place up on the sunset Sansett's strip. You want that, have
- 6:15your picture taken? I wanted something, well, something glamor. That's look
- 6:18look here what I got. Oh, by the way, I ordered to
- 6:21drink for you a Scott's drink here. You like scott drinks, don't you?
- 6:26Yeah? Scott Strengths are my favorite drinks. Joe, thanks, You're
- 6:30welcome. Now. Isn't it wonderful? The picture? I mean, I'll
- 6:34say it is. I'd never say school teacher, No, that's the idea.
- 6:38Just like a model in a fashion magazine, isn't it? Arbrey took
- 6:41it from inside his photoshop for how wet outside on the street looking in his
- 6:44window, you know, like a smart career girl just strolling along the avenue.
- 6:46And see how he faded out to the background that way. I'm the
- 6:50focal vocal center. Isn't it nice? Oh? Yes it is? Yeah,
- 6:55But look Joan, the rest of the story. Now, the man
- 6:57was shot. You don't want publicity, remember, Oh? Yes, yes,
- 7:00of course. Well we made a date mister mile over tonight. I
- 7:03was to be at his place, his shop run a strip at eight,
- 7:05which I was. But when I got there he was gone. Well he
- 7:10might just as well have been for all the attention he paid. Jimmy,
- 7:13he's something on his mind, as though he didn't even expect me. Why
- 7:15I had to mention this picture here twice before he got it out of a
- 7:18drawers for me. But then, just like daddy, Jane said, if
- 7:23I want a glamor and nightclub, why not? Oh, by all means,
- 7:25why not? And off we went to Serah andos no less instead at
- 7:28the table with two men and a woman who was actually armed. God fury
- 7:31actually whom God Fury to silent you, Jimmy the papers. Oh golly,
- 7:35her picture has been in every theater section in magazine for the last six months.
- 7:40Of course, she hasn't made a movie yet, which he probably.
- 7:43She has red hair figure, lots of each. Try. Oh, I'm
- 7:46so sweet to talk to. But believe it or not, when we were
- 7:49in the powder room and she couldn't find her list, she used mine.
- 7:51Now that's really democratic. Look, Joan, there was a shooting. You
- 7:56remember that. Now you were sitting at a table with three men in this
- 8:00God the Fury. That's right. Well, go on, what happened next?
- 8:05Well, when miss Ury and I got back to the table, mister
- 8:07Lacy and his sand were gone. And then a minute later Aubrey excused himself
- 8:11to make a phone call, and then and then Away brought me a note
- 8:13from Aubrey which said I should go back to my hotel and wait there till
- 8:16I heard drum him. Then it happened. Look, Joan, if I'm
- 8:20going to help you on this, you got to tell a whole coherent story.
- 8:24Wells suddenly there were some shots, maybe from outside, and people were
- 8:28yelling. It was terrible. I was scared to this, and I ran
- 8:31outside. People were crowded around someone who was Aubrey. He was dead.
- 8:35What'd you do? Then? I took the first taxi I could get to
- 8:37my hotel. There was beverly. Chris had started from my bungalow, but
- 8:41didn't go inside because because there was a man hanging around. Had seen him
- 8:45before some pace, and I didn't like his looks and turned to win.
- 8:48He called for me. But he was awful, mister marlowe awful, looking
- 8:50like a frog, maybe, sloping shoulders, bulging eyes. Yes. And
- 8:54when mister Marlow, how do you know what he looked like? Promised not
- 8:58to tell thmas Oh, mister Marlow he's here, is me? Been watching
- 9:03us for quite a while. Holy, And I didn't get away from him,
- 9:07mister Marlow. I had nothing to do with his shooting. What can
- 9:09I do? I simpley catty missed up in this terrible business. I'll please,
- 9:13mister Marloll, I'll pay you anything you only get me out of this.
- 9:16Please. We'll talk about that later, Jonny. Now, look,
- 9:18when we get up, keep talking and don't look away from me. Then
- 9:22when we're outside and around the taxi, stand there, duck away from me
- 9:24fast and getting close to the building and stay there, little frogman is gone,
- 9:28and head for your hotel bungalow and wait there to hear for me.
- 9:30Now you got that? Oh yes, I don't understand why he's going to
- 9:33leave it. You will fall a little cool works come on. It played
- 9:45easier than I expected because, like a good shadow of the Frogman gave us
- 9:48a small headstock, which was all I needed. The second Joanes dotted away
- 9:52from me, I moved quickly after the first cabin line open and slammed the
- 9:54red door fast, said goodbye out loud to Joan, who was not in
- 9:56the back seat, then slipped the drive of five and practically shouted a very
- 10:01far away address at him. When he lunched in the curb. I stood
- 10:03there and waved him minute. It was still supposed to be Jones. Then,
- 10:07even as I saw the frog Man down across the street, piland of
- 10:11his own car and take off after the cab, I walked slowly back into
- 10:13the bar, where I had another Scotch drink and did some fast checking on
- 10:18the current location of Aubrey Nichols, which was a Dawson Memorial Hospital, and
- 10:22I started outside for my car after stopping en route at the booth where Joan
- 10:26and I have been sitting to pick up a pair of gloves and glamor portrait
- 10:28my new little client had left on the seat. The school mom had been
- 10:33upset and beat thousand Memorial Hospital, Doctor Chambers. Yet one moment, please
- 10:46go ahead, yes, oh, I want to know the condition of a
- 10:50patient. It was brought in here a little while ago, mister Aubrey Nichols.
- 10:52Sorry, sir, we're not allowed to give out that information. It
- 10:56had to inquire the two pretendents office, Very j wouldn't bother Phil Well,
- 11:01Detective Lieutenant Matthews. Good evening, Good evening. Nichol is dead model.
- 11:05We did not get a statement from him. That's too bad. Any ideas
- 11:07that no have you. I didn't even know him as a client of mine,
- 11:13mister Smith. That's right. It's remarkable, mister Smith. He asked
- 11:18me to inquire about his condition. Well, it happened about an hour ago
- 11:20in an alley behind Sirenois. Aubrey Nichol was a photographer up on the strip,
- 11:24but pretty much of a phoney, a big front boy strictly, that's
- 11:28all. It was, too huh walk down here with me a little.
- 11:31Oh sure, sure. We figured there may be some connection between this shooting
- 11:39and Sang Nesta's death this afternoon, nest All said, an office on the
- 11:41strip. What do you figure that talian is man named ham Lacy, have
- 11:46you heard? Yeah, he was one of Nesta's number one boys in the
- 11:50racket, right, something like that. Of course, Officially, ham Lacy
- 11:54is known as the vice president of Nesta Enterprise is Incoperated also production manager that
- 11:58second rate studio master. Well, anyway, Lacy, another man and Aubrey
- 12:03Nikeel we're at Cirrhos tonight with a starlet named erm god Fury and another girl
- 12:09we haven't been able to tag yet. Now tell minute, lieutenant. When
- 12:11Nesta was killed, it looked like the usual mob technical No, no,
- 12:16Nesta was beat up by fists, not sap, not cut up a breath.
- 12:20Knine, your death was caused by a blow to the temple from a
- 12:22poker that was standing next to a phony fireplace in which he could have hit
- 12:26his head when he fell. Well, probably not, Lacy in associates h
- 12:28Probably, man, he's got an alibi. Yeah. Besides, we already
- 12:33got a fair line and who did it and why. We found a note
- 12:35in Nesta's pocket, signed the Tobin, which threatened Nesta with a beating if
- 12:41he didn't stay away from the undersigns wife and send her back home at once.
- 12:45Nesta, you may may not happen to know. I had this in
- 12:46god Fury or something under contract to him. Saw lots of her. So
- 12:50again, the two deaths more or less tied. Again. Yeah, you've
- 12:54already talked to Oh, by the way, her name is erm god Fury.
- 12:58No, no, no, I ain't talked about I figured I wait
- 13:00till I knew a little more. Also, I didn't figure Nichol would die
- 13:03without saying anything. No, but not your turn. We found this negative
- 13:09in the alley near Nichol's body. This is a night shot of the sunset
- 13:13strip and nothing more means anything to you. No, I should it look
- 13:16I told you before, Lieutenant, I never even met Nicol. Yeah,
- 13:20and I listened, didn't I I noticed? But now let's level a bit.
- 13:22I feel who your client is and what he or she has to do
- 13:26with this is one thing, as long as we're both on the same side,
- 13:30But playing dumb when it might count is quite another. Not one smart
- 13:33phill. Huh the picture still zero, Lieutenant Anna Bright? Anything else?
- 13:39Yeah? Yeah, just to save you a little time, Phil, Yeah,
- 13:41let's do iurm god Fury's address four forty one West. That would drive
- 13:46Beverly Hills. You gotta call forty one West, befits. Now play it
- 13:48close. Be sure to call when you think it's time. And if you're
- 13:50wondering about why all is help for me? Try this. What you know
- 13:56and won't tell, plus what I know and will tell might do the true.
- 14:00Say goodbye to me, goodbye, Yes, miss Fury. My name
- 14:15is Philip Marlow. I must talk to you at once. Your husband,
- 14:18I'm a friend of his. Nie asked me to get in touch with you.
- 14:20It's because of what happened this afternoon up on the strip. Well,
- 14:24what's wrong is is days here in town? Yeah? Yeah, he is,
- 14:28and he's in trouble. You see the police are after him. H
- 14:33what are you copper? Oh no, wait a minute, miss Fury.
- 14:35I've already told you I'm a friend of Daves. Happens to be Douglas,
- 14:39Mister Douglas Tobin. Keep that in mind when you try this next time.
- 14:43Good night, I'm not so fast baby, mistake was mine, But I
- 14:46still want to talk to you. A lot of men now beat it before
- 14:50God, before I forget myself. Oh, no trouble, Hamilton, Darling.
- 14:56This gentleman was just leaving. He had the wrong dress. He made
- 15:01a mistake, didn't you, miss de Malo. Yes, yes, a
- 15:05blunder. A thousand apologies and good night missus Touburn for what it was worth.
- 15:15At work, At the mention of the name Toburn, ham Lacey spun
- 15:18around like it was built on a pivot in his eyes that were narrow slits
- 15:20with all the come hither look of a cobra. Has never left me because
- 15:24I slowly walked away from him and passed the yellow invertibally, just driven up
- 15:26in license number six nine six' nine ex California and on out to the
- 15:31street, all of which only meant the Lieutenant Matthews was probably right about there
- 15:35being some connection between Sinester's murder and the death of Aubrey Nickel. And I
- 15:41opened the door of my car and started to climb in under the wheel.
- 15:43A voice in the night helped not at all. If you don't do what
- 15:46I say, I'll kid you. Okay, that count Take it easy,
- 15:48all right, Now close the door and turn around. You're back to me.
- 15:52Now, look, if this is a stick up, busty, you
- 15:52can save us both a lot of time that night. I'm not a hold
- 15:56up man. Now, who over there close to those trees? Go on?
- 16:00I want to ask you a question that's far enough. Now, what
- 16:04have you got to do with Helen? Helen? Who Helen irm guard fury,
- 16:08that's what she's known as. Now what have you got to do with
- 16:11her? Tell me, very little, mister Tilbyn. You know who I
- 16:15am, and so do the police. Why don't you call it quits?
- 16:18Why it's still in one piece? Oh no, no, not quits.
- 16:22That's what you want. But all of you want me arrested and out of
- 16:25the way in Jalen. Maybe out of the way for good old on.
- 16:27So that won't be Helen's smiling. You're not gonna harm herfel Tebyn, you're
- 16:30getting excited. That's excited and excited enough for this go in just the moment
- 16:48the second actor, Philip Marlowe. But first I thrill him in a high
- 16:51attention suspense from the word go, dramatic excitement that builds and builds until it
- 16:56explodes in the smashing climax. That's Inter Sanctum, The Great Mystery. Thank
- 17:00y'all, that's another of CBS's top notch Monday night programs. You'll find Inner
- 17:03Sanctum one of the most entertaining spots in your Monday night listening schedule. And
- 17:07remember, Lux Radio Theater is back for its fifteenth year of great dramatic presentations
- 17:14Inter Sanctum and Lux Radio Theater every Monday Night over most of these same CBS
- 17:18stations. Now with our star Gerald Moore, we returned to the second act
- 17:22of Philip Marlowe and Tonight's story The Rust and Hickory. When the whirling ten
- 17:37wheels of light slowed down to being street lamps again, Doug with Tilburn and
- 17:41toned shoeleater on enough sidewalk to be safely out of sight. But it took
- 17:45a whole minute of rubbing the bruise where his pistol ha glanced off my head
- 17:48before a I finally remembered that it was a good time to call John.
- 17:53I look back at him God Fury's house first, and saw the lights still
- 17:56on, the clean colored convertible still park in front, and all the pent
- 18:00we're quiet inside, So I limped as far as the phone booths on the
- 18:03corner. Won my clients that the trick we'd pulled on the frog wouldn't hold
- 18:07up forever. But instead I found out just how far this sided forever it
- 18:11had collapsed. Yeah, hello, hello, Hey, what number is this?
- 18:18Wellless shammos? You got the right number of shamas? What are you
- 18:22doing there? Where's John rusting the babes here? But she ain't much of
- 18:26a move to talk. Incidentally, thanks for giving me this free time.
- 18:30What are you talking about? That fast shuffle? You touched me? Dibby
- 18:33that now you see her? Now you don't gag with the taxi an old
- 18:37shell game operator like me, that one was the stuff to see through.
- 18:41It was a glass bottom boat. All right, all right, you get
- 18:42you to plumb in the morning, but listen to you. If anything happens
- 18:45to miss rust now, blat, skip it, skip it, dippy,
- 18:48you're wasting your breath. It's already happened. I see you're run so long?
- 19:00Oh John, John, come on, baby, come on, stop
- 19:03out, I stay away from me. Hey, get out of here.
- 19:11Yeah, oh Marlow, come on, honey, what happened to you?
- 19:14Hurt Joan. That man, the one with the gruff voice. He pourced
- 19:17his way in here, Marlow. He was looking for something. I tried
- 19:19to stop him. I was going to screen, but I guess hit twen
- 19:22he put the bite on me, that slug baby. Well anyway, he
- 19:26hit me hard, and I've never been treated that way before in my whole
- 19:29life. You've never been buddies with murdered before either. Come on, honey,
- 19:32get up off the floor. Huh easy? Now, hey, he
- 19:37turned your place inside out, too, didn't he? What was he after,
- 19:40Johnny? I don't know. He just told me to quit starling and
- 19:42hand it over. I didn't know what he meant to reshove me. Then
- 19:45he pulled out all the books here and towards the run. He was looking
- 19:48for something small and flat, like a Wait a minute, wait a minute.
- 19:51Sure, the cops found a negative near Albury Nickel tonight, but it
- 19:53was worthless. It must have been another one, an important one. And
- 19:57Lacy and Froggy, you no doubt is holm. I must think you've got
- 20:00it me. Well that's impossible. Well I had with my picture and well
- 20:03I don't even have that now. Oh but I do out of my can.
- 20:06It gives me a great idea. Come on, get what's my photograph
- 20:11got to do with you? Maybe plenty? You see, when Aubrey printed
- 20:12that picture of you, he faded out the background almost completely. You remember,
- 20:17that's a stunt and fashion photography to make a subject stand out. But
- 20:19in this case, John, I figure it was played strictly in reverse.
- 20:22That Aubrey took you to Cernos tonight on business, big business, and you
- 20:26were holding the merchandise for them all the way. Yeah, let's take a
- 20:30look. Oh mad, my pretty picture friend. Better listen, you,
- 20:34pretty head. Latest way i'd believe me. Oh yeah, he is books
- 20:40see a negative the size of a postage stamp. I'll bet old flashbulbs,
- 20:44the ten dollar bills. His baby's really loaded, My lord, I bet
- 20:48that baby's loaded too. What are you talking about? It's the gun in
- 20:52that man's hand there behind you. Oh fine, wait, easy morlol.
- 20:56I'm I'm not looking for any more trouble. I just want to be sure
- 20:59that you will help me. First, you're a private detective. I searched
- 21:03you before, so I know I'm in a jam. It's worse than I
- 21:07figured. The cops are after me for murder. No kidding. I can't
- 21:11understand it, Tobyn. All you got is I'm outive. Deepen up the
- 21:14swimming, and you've been dropping clothes like Hansel and Gretel dropped pebble. All
- 21:17right, all right, but I didn't do it well. I beat up
- 21:18siin Ester, sure, but while he was going with Helen, my Helen.
- 21:22I hated everything and everybody in this phony town because they took her away
- 21:26from me, even changed her name for her Erngard Fury. But I didn't
- 21:30kill Nestor, I swear I didn't. You've got to help me, Marlow
- 21:33that thirty eight year fist. Are you asking or telling? Oh? I'm
- 21:37asking? Brother here here, take it, take the gun. I'm in
- 21:40a fix and I know it, okay, hot Ed, I'm already in
- 21:44Dutch for hiding Matthew's key witness. Here. Think how I look keeping his
- 21:47chief suspect under wraps. Two yep, Oh, maybe I must sucker,
- 21:51but I believe you all right? Way do you hang your hat? The
- 21:55country cottage is number seven. It's kind of a motel court down a Melrose
- 21:59number seven. I go there and stay out of sight, and I mean
- 22:00stay out of sight. Yeah, okay, thanks, Marlow, say I'm
- 22:06sorry I batted you down tonight. That makes a lot of difference to the
- 22:07lump on my head. Go on, tobn bed it. Okay, I'll
- 22:11keep in touch with you. Where are we doing, Marlow? Call a
- 22:14friend of mine. We need a big enlargement of a small negative roncal pull
- 22:34are you shermy? This is Phil Marlow. Yeah, I know. Now,
- 22:44look are you busy? I got a job that's right down your alley,
- 22:45Sherman. It's important. It's a thirty five millimeters negative I wanted blown
- 22:49up to about half as big as a house. I can't. I I've
- 22:55got to check a couple of other things at the same time. Now,
- 22:56look, shermy, can you meet me at the Aubrey Nickels studio on the
- 22:59street. What about ten minutes back door? Yeah, so we can kick
- 23:06it in without attracting too much attention. Show me. I'll see you in
- 23:08ten minutes. Filed Joan into the card, drove down the strip and once
- 23:18pasted Nickel Studio, which was enough. Joan posted for a picture in front
- 23:22of the place and directly across the street behind her. Just as I knew
- 23:26what had to be was a neat plastic sign reading sign as to enterprises on
- 23:30the diminutive but glossy imitation of Swiss chalet where Nesta's body had been found.
- 23:34We turned double backs through the alien found showman bobbing up and down like a
- 23:37nervous gopher. Five minutes, if not so subtle persuasion got us past the
- 23:41lock and inside Aubrey's studio, where something else checked. The walls were practically
- 23:45papered with pictures of arm God Curi taken from every conceivable angle, including some
- 23:51that were not. Things were beginning to make a lot of sense. Mylo
- 23:53is just all right, it's coming in here. I mean it's sort of
- 23:56uninvited nose breaking an entering lady. You can get five years for it.
- 24:00I sure, hope you know what you're doing. Yeah, this must be
- 24:03the dark room. Yeah, now here's a negative Shermy, do your stuff?
- 24:08What do you really expect to find on the film Marlow the Murderer?
- 24:11Baby, it's gotta go one of two ways. That was Toburn for jealousy
- 24:15or ham Lacy for ambition. Aubrey Nickel caught one of the two in the
- 24:18background when he took your picture, and he was familiar enough with all parties
- 24:22concerned over there to think he could put the screws on somebody. How's it
- 24:26coming, Shermy, You out in a minute? Fifteen by twenty? Okay,
- 24:30yeah, it's good. If there isn't a man in the background,
- 24:33I lead it. Better get the Fulton poper pal because it's nothing but a
- 24:37car. It can't be, brother, that's more than a car, Shermy,
- 24:42It's a yellow convertible that belongs to ham Lacy. Look, you can
- 24:47even see the lcense sixt nine sixty nine x six nine six. How do
- 24:52you suppose what's the matter, Marline? I just thought of something. Without
- 24:56this picture, both Toburn and Lacy are suspects, but with it we have
- 24:59proof. Ly see is implicated. That means Lacy thinks he has Tobin sitting
- 25:03in the perfect frame right where he wants. Now, look, you two
- 25:06get out of here, go back to the paper. I've got to get
- 25:07to Tobin fast and let him know. Look, baby, you're no doubt
- 25:11horrific in the third grade, but some things they don't even teach in college.
- 25:12You're gonna pop any minute, So I'll take it from here. Huh.
- 25:15Stick with cheremey, honey, I'll caught you. I made it from
- 25:26the strip down to Melrose and then east the tuster of Dusty Leans, who's
- 25:29were bath known as country cottages and something under ten minutes park down the street
- 25:33and cut back through the alley on foot. I got to the door of
- 25:36Cottage number seven with about thirty seconds to stare. No, no, wait
- 25:38a minute, mister, you got me wrong. No, I haven't tell
- 25:41you can tell me you didn't knock off Sinester, and I'll believe you.
- 25:45Nobody else will. I've got you right where I want. You know because
- 25:48of your notes found in Nesta's pocket. You're the jilted boyfriend, the hit
- 25:53from back home who came to Hollywood with murder in your heart and knocked off
- 25:57the guy who stole your wife. Look yeah, and then you went after
- 26:00the cheap photographer who gave her style. And after that you knew you couldn't
- 26:04escape, so you blew your brain. And by the time I leave here,
- 26:08that's the way it's gonna look. Tonight, ham past till lay tossing
- 26:11on over on the bed. Come on, it's better you thinkured Aubrey was
- 26:18lying about having a picture that take you with Sinus's killer, didn't you?
- 26:21You thinkured Aubrey saw something but had no proof, so you shot him.
- 26:23But you were wrong. Hammy had all the proof we need you, all
- 26:30right. I hit her. She's the one who killed Seignister. I tried
- 26:33to tell you that. I followed you here to tell you, but instead
- 26:36I saw her with a gun pointed at you. I grabbed the first thing.
- 26:38I saw, this broken rake handle, and I hit her with it.
- 26:41I hit her awfully hard. Feel, but she is moving. You
- 26:45don't think she's dead. He's probably thinking over the big lesson you just taught
- 26:49her with that stick there? Who's the matter? He teach? You?
- 26:55Know what? That rake handles made of? Tree, isn't it? Yeah?
- 27:00What else could it possibly be but a hickory stake? All right,
- 27:14model, all right, nobody can hear us? Now what is it?
- 27:15Well, it's that miss Rustin hears a school teacher, Matthews, and it's
- 27:19imperative that we keep her name out of this. Oh well, we can
- 27:22arrange that. Oh good, you know, Matthews. It's funny how one
- 27:26step leads to another. Ham Lacy never would have gone so far as to
- 27:30kill nester on his own. But when he learned that I got it done
- 27:33that he saw an opportunity to turn the whole situation of his advantage. He
- 27:37and the girl agreed to framesven and then go along as a team. You
- 27:40know, of course that that's just your theory. Just a man over there
- 27:44and be quiet for a change, wild, miss Rustin, and I wind
- 27:48this up, Matthews. Listen, Wyatt, please pulling rankh bhil no,
- 27:55miss Rusting in solving this case just a minute. She didn't solve the case.
- 27:59I to Rusting. If you hadn't solved it, then right when you
- 28:02did, you'd be talking to this guy exclusively. The Ouiji bought from now
- 28:04on, let's face off, what a corny pitch. Now tell me,
- 28:07miss Rustin, how did you peg arm god fury? Well, when we
- 28:11got the picture of the yellow convertible, I remembered that I'd gone to the
- 28:15powder room at Cyranoids with mystery of pressing her makeup, but she couldn't find
- 28:18her lipstick. She emptied her purse looking for it, and she finally had
- 28:21to burrow mine. You know, oh how democratic I said that? So
- 28:23now you're on it. Now tell me M's Rustin, How do you figure
- 28:27the lipstick figured? Well, it wasn't the lipstick. I happened to notice
- 28:32among the things from a person a teaching chain with cockkey's on it and an
- 28:34identification tag in the form of a little licensear oh, and the numbers were
- 28:38mixed nine six nine eggs. That's right. And since ham Lacy had an
- 28:42alibionos keys were in miss Fury's bag, you figured it was her who'd been
- 28:45driving. It was she who'd been driving. Yes, this is mister revolting.
- 28:48Yeah. She she wanted to kill Mesta because he wouldn't turn loose of
- 28:52her so she could claw her way on up to the bit the top.
- 28:56And when she found him unconscious, it was easy. How literary? Well,
- 29:00that's that, I guess. Thank you very much, miss Rustin.
- 29:03I hope you stay in our town. Was Oh, wa'ts your MTD Tony,
- 29:07baby, don't cry. I just thought it the most dreadful thing I've
- 29:12had a wonderful time. I went to Sarahosa, I had a movie start
- 29:17on the head and I helped able murder. But I'll never ever be able
- 29:21to say one single word about it to anybody in Ferndale. Nebraska. She's
- 29:25done it all. It took a few minutes to put on a new touch
- 29:36of masscarat and get the pink of her nose, but she was smiling again
- 29:40when we said good night to Matthews and stood on the steps at headquarters and
- 29:42looked at the glittering lights of Hollywood. There was still plenty of time for
- 29:47supper and even a dance or two when she wanted to go. But suddenly,
- 29:51from somewhere there was a smell of order in the air, of dry
- 29:55leaves on the ground and ripe red apples for future. She shook a head
- 30:00wistfully and spoke of an appointment she had bright and early next Monday morning.
- 30:03It's a very important appointment, hil Oh. I took her to a hotel,
- 30:11say good by all the way home. For some reason, I kept
- 30:15wondering, whatever happened to Skinny McDonald, the he only kid in school who
- 30:19could shoot a better spitball than marlow Is it really been that long ago?
- 30:41The Adventures of Philip Marlowe star Gerald Moore and are transcribed and directed by Norman
- 30:47McDonald's script is by Meldon la Robert Mitchell, and Gene Levitt. The special
- 30:52music is composed and conducted by Richard Urroant be sure and be once ag next
- 31:00week. When Philomarlo says there was a tapestry found under a tomb, they
- 31:06were all after it, the worried import of the man with half a face,
- 31:08the Englishman in an La slum, and the lady wearing a green veil.
- 31:12But before it was over, none of them had it, and two
- 31:15of the four were dead. Now stay tuned for Gangbusters, which follows immediately
- 31:33over most of these same CBS stations. This is Roy Rowan speaking. This
- 31:42is CBS, the Columbia Broadcasting System. Welcome back. Well, a nice
- 31:53little twist, indeed, not something I'd like to see every week, but
- 31:57it's such a surprising twist, with the client not only saving the detective,
- 32:04but actually being the one to solve the case, of course, benefiting from
- 32:09Philip Marlow's detective work obviously, and really the story is a bit of a
- 32:15salute to teachers, as this was recorded about the time that students were getting
- 32:21back to school, and so that definitely fit with the theme. It definitely
- 32:24occurs to me as I'm listening to this that it was kind of rare.
- 32:30I think nowadays to have the idea of teachers portrayed with quite so much reverence.
- 32:37That was definitely a hallmark of a lot of Golden Age programming. Not
- 32:42all, but quite a bit. All right, Well, now we turn
- 32:45to some listener comments and feedback, and first we returned to The Lady Killers,
- 32:51and I've got actually a very thorough response to the question, because if
- 32:57you'll remember, at the end of The Lady Killers, Marlowe told the murderer,
- 33:04who had decided to get rid of the person who he was planning to
- 33:08pin the murder on by faking a suicide via gas. Marlowe runs into the
- 33:15room. The killer comes in with the gun, and Marlowe tells him that
- 33:19if he fires the gun, it'll all kill them all, and thus Marlow's
- 33:22able to disarm them. However, Lieutenant Matthews calls Marlow's activities into question.
- 33:30Who told you that firing a gun in that room could cause a massive explosion?
- 33:37And so I requested some feedback on what really would have happened. Daniel
- 33:44emails in Adam, I listened to the Marlowe story about the Lady Killer at
- 33:49the end, you had a question regarding the explosive potential of natural gas Messing.
- 33:53Yes, a spark from a gun could cause an explosion. Anyone who's
- 33:59discharged a gun in the dark knows that ample sparks are produced. The explosive
- 34:04limit of natural gas is between four point four to seventeen percent. Under four
- 34:08point four percent, it would be too lean to burn. Over seventeen percent
- 34:14it would be too rich to burn. Everything in between is just right to
- 34:17burn. The smell could also have been pro paane, with a flammable range
- 34:22from two point one percent to ten percent. Within that range, any spark
- 34:27introduced to the mixture can set it off. So it is entirely foreseeable that
- 34:31a spark produced from a gun aimed at Marlow could blow the entire building to
- 34:36smithereens. I had a few occasions as a firefighter where I had attended the
- 34:42aftermath of natural gas explosions. I've seen entire houses that were leveled by such
- 34:46explosives. I have seen the ground burn through snow in the middle of winter.
- 34:52On another occasion, I had a friend who was sleeping in his RV
- 34:55camper when it exploded. Fortunately he lived. These cases are a very real
- 35:00danger. The smell I believe mercy your captain is added to methane and propane
- 35:08at some point in either the manufacturing or the distribution process. This is what
- 35:13you smell. It's a warning. Both methane and propane displace oxygen and can
- 35:19suffocate anyone who's trapped in the room with it. Propane is heavier than air,
- 35:23natural gas is lighter confined to a room, makes them both equally dangerous.
- 35:29The bad guy had the intention of suffocating the suspected murderer. Marlowe used
- 35:34the bad guy's own use of guests to prevent the killer the killing of himself
- 35:38and the intended victim. I hope that answered your question to your satisfaction.
- 35:43Love the show. I started listening just recently. I enjoy it very much.
- 35:47Thank you for making it available to the listening world. Well, thank
- 35:52you so much, Daniel for your very complete answer and really does, really
- 36:00does confirm what marlow said and I also received. I believe it was a
- 36:06tweet from someone on that same point, and so while marlow might not have
- 36:12known it for sure, his instincts were right on the money, and that
- 36:15ultimately saved both his life and help them capture the murderer. And then we
- 36:22have a question from Chuck who says is there any Box thirteen in the future?
- 36:29Chuck, Box thirteen was actually the very first show that we did,
- 36:32and it is available along with a lot of our other past series at archives
- 36:39dot Great Detectives dot net. We did all fifty two episodes. It's a
- 36:45great show and if I ever get around to revisiting shows I did that were
- 36:52that had that many episodes on them, Box thirteen will be at the top
- 36:55of the list. Thanks so much for the question, Chuck and listening.
- 37:00We will be back tomorrow with Nick Carter and join us next Wednesday for another
