- 0:01Speaker 1: Some of the content of Patriots Unfiltered may not be
- 0:04Speaker 1: suitable for all audiences. Listener discretion is advised. The World's
- 0:09Speaker 1: Origion Welcome to Patriot's Unfiltered. Paul's gonna have to leave
- 0:20Speaker 1: early because he's moons. Yeah, he's going on with his
- 0:23Speaker 1: other show. So for the first hour he's gonna be
- 0:25Speaker 1: going head to head with Catch twenty two. So if
- 0:28Speaker 1: no one's listening, Paul, you'll know why I will. I'd
- 0:30Speaker 1: made my picks. I pick. I thought you said you
- 0:33Speaker 1: had a major pick just within that short Wow. Just
- 0:36Speaker 1: shows you the thought we put into this with the
- 0:38Speaker 1: lead that I have. I didn't really see the need. Well,
- 0:41Speaker 1: there's no particular reason, but there are several ways. That's
- 0:45Speaker 1: not what he said. He said no particular reason, right,
- 0:48Speaker 1: because they're already you're reading all three teams heavy heavy,
- 0:51Speaker 1: heavy underdogs, but they were not heavy underdogs playing the
- 0:55Speaker 1: jett with the underdogs. I don't even know, I'll come on,
- 0:58Speaker 1: come on, but they weren't heavy underdogs against the common
- 1:01Speaker 1: I don't think Kansas City's gonna unplode. I don't think
- 1:03Speaker 1: the Bengals are going to unplode. Why so, why do
- 1:05Speaker 1: you think Buffalo. Well because of red Ass. This is
- 1:08Speaker 1: Patriot's Unfiltered fueled by Duncan. Thanks Matt, Um you could
- 1:16Speaker 1: have edited that one out. Yeah, but anyway, Um, yeah,
- 1:20Speaker 1: it's a strange day here and Patriots Unfiltered in the
- 1:23Speaker 1: NFL and because of what happened last night. Um, I
- 1:28Speaker 1: wish I could come on air and say, oh, you know,
- 1:30Speaker 1: we heard themar's doing, but we haven't. I don't. I
- 1:34Speaker 1: haven't had any updates. So it's gonna be just a
- 1:37Speaker 1: show where I don't think we're gonna talk much about
- 1:40Speaker 1: the Bills game coming up because we don't know about
- 1:43Speaker 1: the Bills game coming up. We don't know what's gonna happen.
- 1:47Speaker 1: It's just, you know, not the time to talk about
- 1:49Speaker 1: that game. Um, but we are going to have a shown,
- 1:52Speaker 1: you know, we'll talk about the game that we had
- 1:55Speaker 1: against the Bengals. It's weird, you know, because like here
- 1:59Speaker 1: here's the Patriots in the middle of it again. You know,
- 2:01Speaker 1: like we just played the Bengals, were about to play
- 2:04Speaker 1: the Bills. The two teams that were involved in the
- 2:07Speaker 1: game last night. It's it's just so weird, you know.
- 2:11Speaker 1: It's it's just it's hard. I think everybody's going through
- 2:13Speaker 1: right now where you use sports as kind of your
- 2:14Speaker 1: escape from reality, and then when you get hit with
- 2:16Speaker 1: the dosa reality from the place that you kind of
- 2:19Speaker 1: used to get away from those things, it's it's hard
- 2:21Speaker 1: to balance it. And I think everybody today is just
- 2:24Speaker 1: kind of feels like it's hard to really worry about
- 2:27Speaker 1: the Patriots playoff hopes or the Patriots offense, like you know, Matt,
- 2:31Speaker 1: Matt Patricia today, I mean, I'm having trouble mustering any
- 2:34Speaker 1: of that energy. Yeah, after that, after last night, Yeah,
- 2:38Speaker 1: especially with the gravity of this game. I don't know
- 2:40Speaker 1: about you guys, but I felt like that was appointment
- 2:42Speaker 1: television for me last night. I can't remember the last
- 2:45Speaker 1: time I was so excited for a regular season game
- 2:47Speaker 1: that wasn't the Patriots, and to have that all play
- 2:50Speaker 1: out the way it did in primetime, it kind of
- 2:52Speaker 1: just rattles you. Yeah, Yeah, that's the thing. We all
- 2:55Speaker 1: witnessed it. You know, it was for me, it was
- 2:57Speaker 1: the look on the players faces. Um, you know, you
- 3:00Speaker 1: could just tell I mean there's always when guys get hurt,
- 3:02Speaker 1: and you know, certainly guys walk over and you know,
- 3:04Speaker 1: maybe give a helmet tap if it seems like it
- 3:06Speaker 1: might be something serious, but just the look of horror
- 3:09Speaker 1: and dread on their faces. And even though as an
- 3:11Speaker 1: audience you couldn't see what was actually going on, you know,
- 3:15Speaker 1: and amongst the you know, all the doctors that were
- 3:17Speaker 1: that we're working on him, you knew it was serious
- 3:19Speaker 1: and you know, and then you take to Twitter, and
- 3:22Speaker 1: then the Twitter wars begin. But at least at least
- 3:24Speaker 1: you were able to just say two points. You get
- 3:26Speaker 1: the information from Twitter, and then I would say, there
- 3:28Speaker 1: are obviously, I know, we can trash social media, and
- 3:31Speaker 1: but there also was a lot of good that seems
- 3:33Speaker 1: to be coming out of this in terms of, you know,
- 3:35Speaker 1: people supporting his cause. I mean, over three point five
- 3:37Speaker 1: million dollars has been you know, donated to and I
- 3:41Speaker 1: think there's a little confusion exactly what it was. He
- 3:43Speaker 1: was raising money I think for kids, um initially, and
- 3:46Speaker 1: but you know, so those things are always nice, and
- 3:48Speaker 1: I think I got to give some credit, you know,
- 3:49Speaker 1: just there was a Bills player, But I think the
- 3:51Speaker 1: Bills fans and the Bills mafia, they're always so supportive
- 3:55Speaker 1: of other teams when other players go down, and and
- 3:58Speaker 1: I think you're seeing today that other teams are taking
- 4:01Speaker 1: some recognition of that. And also you know you're seeing
- 4:04Speaker 1: plenty of guys donate. Patriots players, all the players around
- 4:06Speaker 1: the NFL donate to the cause and stuff. So you know,
- 4:08Speaker 1: it's it's it's not really a silver lining, but it is.
- 4:11Speaker 1: You know, one good part that comes out of it
- 4:13Speaker 1: is bringing people back together and you know, putting the
- 4:15Speaker 1: team rooting interests all aside because it's really meaningless. And
- 4:18Speaker 1: I think it was pretty unanimous last night, like there's
- 4:21Speaker 1: no way we can play this game. There's no I mean,
- 4:23Speaker 1: I saw Josh Allen standing next to Joe Burrow and
- 4:26Speaker 1: I'm like, there's no way that these guys are about
- 4:28Speaker 1: to go compete against each other. They're standing there just
- 4:30Speaker 1: looking like two guys who have just experienced a really,
- 4:33Speaker 1: really tough life situation and there's no way to click
- 4:36Speaker 1: back into competitive Hey, I'm gonna go beat this guy's
- 4:38Speaker 1: ass now. Like it's just I and it's like, like,
- 4:42Speaker 1: I don't know how many of you have seen someone
- 4:45Speaker 1: in cardiac arrest and you know, EMTs trying to bring
- 4:48Speaker 1: them back to life. It's it's rattling, like you said,
- 4:52Speaker 1: and so these guys just witness that they don't know
- 4:55Speaker 1: how he is. How do you go play and like
- 4:59Speaker 1: even do like someone's gonna get hurt because you can't focus.
- 5:03Speaker 1: Like maybe half the guys are focused, the other half aren't.
- 5:06Speaker 1: And now it's just it's an unsafe situation to put
- 5:10Speaker 1: people in because of what they just witnessed and their
- 5:13Speaker 1: mind isn't on you know, football, Like you know, it's
- 5:17Speaker 1: that's why I hate preseason. You know, it's like, you know,
- 5:19Speaker 1: half the guys are playing for a job. The other
- 5:21Speaker 1: ones just want to get out of there, and you know,
- 5:24Speaker 1: you get injuries because guys aren't in it one hundred
- 5:26Speaker 1: percent mentally. And that's what would have happened last night
- 5:30Speaker 1: had they made them play, and thank god they didn't.
- 5:32Speaker 1: And I mean, can they turn the page by Sunday?
- 5:34Speaker 1: I mean I think even that even that on the air,
- 5:36Speaker 1: I don't know, but you know, you hate to say, well,
- 5:41Speaker 1: the game must go on and all that stuff. It
- 5:43Speaker 1: doesn't have to go on. But I think I think
- 5:46Speaker 1: they'll play Sunday, um, but it'll and hopefully by then
- 5:50Speaker 1: they'll know what's going on with Hamlin. That's because that's
- 5:55Speaker 1: the main thing that that's all they care about right now.
- 5:57Speaker 1: If you're a Buffalo, Bill is, how's our teammate? Yeah,
- 6:00Speaker 1: I think that's the biggest thing right now. The family
- 6:02Speaker 1: did offer just don't I don't want to call it
- 6:05Speaker 1: an update. They were just thanking everyone and you know,
- 6:07Speaker 1: the medical people that that helped him. Know. They said,
- 6:09Speaker 1: you know, we'll let you know when we have an update.
- 6:11Speaker 1: But I mean, I think the last update we had
- 6:13Speaker 1: was that you know, he's he's at the hospital and
- 6:16Speaker 1: you know, we just is in critical consition. So yeah,
- 6:18Speaker 1: until you get some kind of update, it's hard to
- 6:20Speaker 1: really turn the page and think about what's next. I
- 6:23Speaker 1: think he just you need that report of hopefully that
- 6:25Speaker 1: that he's stable, he's going to be okay. Um, but
- 6:28Speaker 1: it's obviously a really complicated I hate that we haven't
- 6:31Speaker 1: heard any updates since last night. Really, yeah, it just
- 6:34Speaker 1: provides such a breeding ground for such irresponsible speculation. I
- 6:38Speaker 1: hate it because I don't think there is an update
- 6:40Speaker 1: to give, right That's what I hate about. But I
- 6:42Speaker 1: think that was confirmed by the family. Yeah, the statement
- 6:45Speaker 1: that Mike just yea just referenced. You know, they said,
- 6:48Speaker 1: you know, we'll provide an updates. I don't think they're
- 6:50Speaker 1: holding back. I just don't think that there's any change.
- 6:53Speaker 1: That's what I hate. And that's yeah, that's that's unfortunate
- 6:56Speaker 1: because you would hope that we would have woken up
- 6:58Speaker 1: this morning to at least a glimmer yeah of good news.
- 7:01Speaker 1: And you know, it's status quo. So we're gonna have
- 7:04Speaker 1: to talk about you know. And I say we, I
- 7:06Speaker 1: don't mean just the four of us on the show.
- 7:08Speaker 1: I mean the league is gonna have to talk about
- 7:11Speaker 1: things that people probably aren't ready to talk about. But
- 7:13Speaker 1: to you a point, Fred, at some point they are
- 7:16Speaker 1: going to have to turn a page and life is
- 7:19Speaker 1: going to have to go on it. And I know
- 7:20Speaker 1: it sounds cold, but there's a week eighteen coming up
- 7:24Speaker 1: at the end of the you know, at the end
- 7:26Speaker 1: of the season here that I think it's gonna have
- 7:29Speaker 1: to get played. Yeah, yeah, And I mean I don't
- 7:32Speaker 1: know how you get around it without I mean, if
- 7:35Speaker 1: I'm the Bills and if you know, six seven guys
- 7:40Speaker 1: come to me, you know, if I'm McDermott or whoever
- 7:43Speaker 1: the owner is and take you know what, I just
- 7:46Speaker 1: I don't feel like I can play this week. Okay, Yeah, no,
- 7:50Speaker 1: we're not. You don't have to play this week. Yeah,
- 7:52Speaker 1: I mean for Buffalo specifically, I think it might be
- 7:55Speaker 1: a little different. Yeah, I was talking about the rest
- 7:57Speaker 1: of the league. Yeah, you know Buffalo. Oh, I think
- 8:00Speaker 1: you're right right if they if they don't agree that
- 8:03Speaker 1: they can play. I mean, I think a forfeit is
- 8:05Speaker 1: on the table. Like, I don't know how you get around.
- 8:09Speaker 1: You can't make them play, no, especially where they have
- 8:13Speaker 1: two games to go. So, I mean, one thing I
- 8:14Speaker 1: thought of initially was like, could you just kind of
- 8:17Speaker 1: push that game a week and maybe try to play
- 8:19Speaker 1: Bengals Bills on Monday night, give the rest of the
- 8:22Speaker 1: team's kind of a weekend off, and then eat into
- 8:25Speaker 1: the bye week in between the conference championships. You could.
- 8:28Speaker 1: I would have gone the opposite. I would have played
- 8:30Speaker 1: the Week eighteen schedule as is and then let the
- 8:37Speaker 1: Bills and Bengals play that first week of the Wild
- 8:41Speaker 1: Cord Round to push the playoffs back. But there's no answers,
- 8:44Speaker 1: there's no there's no easy solution. I mean I went
- 8:47Speaker 1: in this situation, I think they should just call it
- 8:50Speaker 1: a tie. If both teams agree, call it a tie
- 8:53Speaker 1: and live with whatever those ramifications are. And that's it.
- 8:58Speaker 1: That's it. I agree with you. But we'll see what happens,
- 9:02Speaker 1: all right. So we're not going to focus on the
- 9:05Speaker 1: Bills game coming up, like I said, because we have
- 9:07Speaker 1: no idea what's going to happen. So but you know,
- 9:11Speaker 1: we we let's talk about the game that the Patriots
- 9:13Speaker 1: had with the Bengals. Um, you know, and Evan just
- 9:18Speaker 1: sat down. It's deuces here, Evan, Alex Paul, myself, Matt's
- 9:22Speaker 1: in the booth house. Yeah, it's a full house. Um.
- 9:25Speaker 1: You know what, I do want to talk about that
- 9:27Speaker 1: because there's there's a debate, and it's an honest debate
- 9:31Speaker 1: about did the defense have a great game or not?
- 9:35Speaker 1: Is it because you're playing against Teddy Bridgewater and then
- 9:38Speaker 1: he went down in the third quarter and then you're
- 9:40Speaker 1: playing against Tyler Skyler Thompson And is that why the
- 9:44Speaker 1: defense looked really good? Uh? And I think it's you know,
- 9:47Speaker 1: you can have an opinion either way. I I think
- 9:50Speaker 1: I think the defense played pretty well. I think even
- 9:53Speaker 1: when Bridgewater was in there, they had held you know,
- 9:56Speaker 1: the numbers down, and I think they were playing pretty well.
- 10:00Speaker 1: You know, it didn't hurt, it didn't help obviously, the
- 10:04Speaker 1: Bengals that he went down, right, it's the Dolphins. Why
- 10:10Speaker 1: am I thinking would put confusion? Yeah, so I'm I'm rattled,
- 10:16Speaker 1: all right, I'm rattled. Yeah, wow, we all are ye
- 10:20Speaker 1: now you know so. But I do think the defense
- 10:24Speaker 1: played well, and I think they have been playing well.
- 10:26Speaker 1: And I think, you know, if it wasn't for them,
- 10:29Speaker 1: we wouldn't even be sniffing the playoffs. Yeah. Well, I mean,
- 10:33Speaker 1: I think seven touchdowns kind of speaks for itself. I mean,
- 10:35Speaker 1: I I do think they played well. I also think
- 10:37Speaker 1: that there were elements of playing Skyler Thompson and Teddy Bridgewater.
- 10:41Speaker 1: But you know, they're a good defense. I think that's
- 10:43Speaker 1: kind of what we came to in the last couple
- 10:44Speaker 1: of weeks. And I think for me, it's, you know,
- 10:46Speaker 1: it's the takeaways that they continue to get, takeaways, they
- 10:48Speaker 1: continue to get points, um, and for this team and
- 10:51Speaker 1: and the offense, it's just critical. It's it's a critical
- 10:54Speaker 1: element of their games and and any game that they're
- 10:57Speaker 1: gonna win, they need, you know, preferably points, but at
- 10:59Speaker 1: the very least they need takeaways and you know, they've
- 11:02Speaker 1: kept those up this year. I think last year that
- 11:03Speaker 1: the takeaways dried up, and I think that's when everything
- 11:06Speaker 1: totally went dry. So, um, it's just uh, I think
- 11:09Speaker 1: the pass rush has led the way. You know, credit
- 11:11Speaker 1: to those guys. They've been a real strength this year
- 11:13Speaker 1: and really played well, and you know, they deserve a
- 11:15Speaker 1: lot of credit in a season that you know is
- 11:17Speaker 1: filled with obviously a lot of criticism on other side
- 11:20Speaker 1: of that, I think point to turnover differential. I think
- 11:24Speaker 1: they're like fifth in the league right now, or they're
- 11:26Speaker 1: up there. Yeah, after a bad start too, I mean
- 11:28Speaker 1: in credit to the offense and you know, as as
- 11:29Speaker 1: Evan wrote, Mac, you know, just taking care of the ball.
- 11:32Speaker 1: I mean, it's it's it's I mean, I think those
- 11:33Speaker 1: were fundamental things that they had to get right after
- 11:36Speaker 1: the early part of the season was you know, you
- 11:38Speaker 1: just can't turn the ball over like that to give
- 11:40Speaker 1: you a chance self a chance to win. And that's
- 11:41Speaker 1: and that's what they've been doing. So I mean, I
- 11:43Speaker 1: do think they deserve, you know, credit for that, for
- 11:44Speaker 1: playing safe with the ball. Some key h examples though,
- 11:48Speaker 1: of course, being the end of the two previous games
- 11:50Speaker 1: which we were not great Paul security and right and
- 11:52Speaker 1: cost you but still yeah, yeah, well I think that
- 11:57Speaker 1: what I would like to see any game this year,
- 12:00Speaker 1: if we possibly could, is a game where, you know,
- 12:04Speaker 1: the offense takes some of the pressure off the defense
- 12:06Speaker 1: to not have to pitch basically a perfect game, especially
- 12:10Speaker 1: down the stretching games right, you know, second quarter on,
- 12:13Speaker 1: a second half on excuse me. So, I think a
- 12:16Speaker 1: lot of the conversation about the defense about against elite quarterbacks,
- 12:20Speaker 1: right against the Burrows, the Allen's, you know Lamar earlier
- 12:23Speaker 1: on in the year. Okay, but what would have happened
- 12:27Speaker 1: in some of those games if the offense was pulling
- 12:29Speaker 1: its weight in the game right for right? You know,
- 12:32Speaker 1: what would have happened if the defense wasn't out there
- 12:35Speaker 1: for thirty seven minutes of the game against Cincinnati a
- 12:40Speaker 1: couple of weeks ago, or against the Raiders, you know,
- 12:43Speaker 1: especially in that first half they were on the field
- 12:45Speaker 1: of ton and then they gave up the touchdown drive
- 12:47Speaker 1: at the end of the game. Well, were they gasped
- 12:50Speaker 1: because they were on the field for forty minutes? You know?
- 12:52Speaker 1: Whereas sort of that line as well, because I think
- 12:55Speaker 1: the defense has really played well and unlike the offense,
- 12:59Speaker 1: has played above maybe their talent level at times this year,
- 13:03Speaker 1: especially in the secondary, and in this game, they played
- 13:07Speaker 1: a ton of zone. They were eighty percent zone. They
- 13:10Speaker 1: put a lot of split safety zone, you know, cover
- 13:11Speaker 1: two quarters, things like that, and speaking to the players
- 13:14Speaker 1: after the game, they simply said that they couldn't give
- 13:17Speaker 1: up big plays in this one, right, you know, they
- 13:19Speaker 1: much rather force Teddy Bridgewater and the Dolphins to beat
- 13:23Speaker 1: them eleven twelve, thirteen play drives than to give up
- 13:27Speaker 1: one for seventy five, which is obvious, but I think
- 13:31Speaker 1: that that's where a lot of the game plan came from.
- 13:33Speaker 1: And when Bridgewater was in the game, he did do
- 13:36Speaker 1: a decent job of checking the ball down and taking
- 13:38Speaker 1: the profits underneath the defense, and maybe they did give
- 13:41Speaker 1: up some yards doing that, but ultimately they're fourteen on
- 13:45Speaker 1: third down. They obviously had the two turnovers in the
- 13:48Speaker 1: second half, and I think that they executed the game plan.
- 13:51Speaker 1: Now is that game plan it'sthetically pleasing to the point
- 13:55Speaker 1: where they're covering every blade of grass and absolutely shutting
- 13:58Speaker 1: down the offense. Maybe maybe not, but I think that
- 14:01Speaker 1: that was they knew they were going to give up
- 14:04Speaker 1: some stuff underneath to protect against the base and you
- 14:06Speaker 1: can talk about you know, uh, backup quarterback, third string
- 14:09Speaker 1: quarterback for Miami. But remember the Patriots were without three
- 14:15Speaker 1: of their corners, you know, so it was kind of like,
- 14:18Speaker 1: all right, so your backups against our backups, and you know,
- 14:22Speaker 1: let's see what happens. I, like Kevin said, I think
- 14:25Speaker 1: they there wasn't a clear game plan on defense, and
- 14:29Speaker 1: I think they did their job. I think they did
- 14:31Speaker 1: their job to the best of their abilities, and I
- 14:34Speaker 1: was pleased with it. You know, Evan, you weren't too
- 14:37Speaker 1: impressed though, with with McDaniel. I was. I was enjoying
- 14:40Speaker 1: your right up. But I think that there's like, you know,
- 14:43Speaker 1: it's your point. It's like, I think this Patriots defense
- 14:46Speaker 1: when they get beat, you know, you know what it
- 14:48Speaker 1: kind of looks like, and why don't teams do that
- 14:51Speaker 1: all the time. Well, so I think that there was
- 14:53Speaker 1: an element of this that ye know, the old coaching
- 14:57Speaker 1: adage is that you run away from man and you
- 15:00Speaker 1: find the soft spots in zone. Right, So if the
- 15:02Speaker 1: Patriots are playing eighty percent zone, the crossing routes and
- 15:06Speaker 1: stretching the field horizontally might not be the best approach
- 15:10Speaker 1: they might be trying. You might need to just sit
- 15:12Speaker 1: down and pick your spots more against the zone coverage
- 15:15Speaker 1: than to do stuff like that. But what I just
- 15:17Speaker 1: thought was ridiculous from McDaniel in this game is in
- 15:20Speaker 1: the running game too, that the Dolphins tried to come
- 15:22Speaker 1: right at the Patriots in the running game. They were
- 15:24Speaker 1: running downhill running schemes and so was not Kyle Shanahan
- 15:28Speaker 1: outside zone, Let's get it out on the edge and
- 15:30Speaker 1: try to turn the corner. This was counter, This was lead.
- 15:34Speaker 1: This was come right at you. If you want to
- 15:36Speaker 1: play the Patriots, especially in the running game in a
- 15:39Speaker 1: phone booth, then good luck. Like you're not going to
- 15:41Speaker 1: beat the Patriots that way, Like you're not gonna beat
- 15:44Speaker 1: Davon Gotshaw and larn Sky and Gilani Tavai and Jawan Bentley,
- 15:48Speaker 1: especially playing downhill football, that they'll bully you all game
- 15:53Speaker 1: long if that's how you want to play it. And
- 15:55Speaker 1: I thought the Dolphins advantage, like a lot of teams
- 15:58Speaker 1: that are built like Miami with Tyree Hill and Jalen
- 16:01Speaker 1: Waddle and most who's a fast running back, is to
- 16:05Speaker 1: try to get out on the edge and try to
- 16:07Speaker 1: turn the corner on New England and make those linebackers
- 16:10Speaker 1: and make those bigger d tackles run sideline to sideline,
- 16:13Speaker 1: and instead they try to come right at the Patriots,
- 16:16Speaker 1: and I think the Patriots just are like, bring it on, Like,
- 16:19Speaker 1: if this is what you want to do, then we
- 16:21Speaker 1: got you know, this is totally fine with us. And
- 16:23Speaker 1: I tweeted out some clips of them running counter just
- 16:27Speaker 1: like right out the Patriots or getting stuff in the
- 16:29Speaker 1: line of scrimmage, and Devon Godshaw like the tweet, so
- 16:31Speaker 1: obviously the Patriots felt. Yeah, the Patriots felt like, why
- 16:36Speaker 1: are you running right at us? Right? Like? This is
- 16:38Speaker 1: not you know, gonna be a good formula for you.
- 16:41Speaker 1: And and that's really how the game played out. Especially,
- 16:44Speaker 1: I thought that the Dolphins on first down ran the
- 16:47Speaker 1: ball a ton, like they were trying to run the
- 16:49Speaker 1: football in this game, and the Patriots were just not
- 16:51Speaker 1: having any of it. And I just can't believe that
- 16:54Speaker 1: that was the think that they were doing that to
- 16:56Speaker 1: protect the quarterbacks, of course to a degree, sure, but
- 16:59Speaker 1: like you can protect the quarterbacks by throwing the ball
- 17:02Speaker 1: behind the line of scrimmage. Also, right, you know, you
- 17:05Speaker 1: send Hill in motion and you flip it out to him.
- 17:07Speaker 1: Is that a hard throw for the quarterback to make?
- 17:09Speaker 1: And Mike McDaniel was here in twenty twenty with San
- 17:12Speaker 1: Francisco and Jimmy Garoppolo through I think it was nine
- 17:15Speaker 1: passes behind the line of scrimmage that gained eleven yards
- 17:18Speaker 1: on average per attempt on just end around type of throws. Right,
- 17:23Speaker 1: you just motioned the receiver out into the formation, into
- 17:27Speaker 1: the why part of the formation, and you set up
- 17:29Speaker 1: a screen on that side of the field or something
- 17:32Speaker 1: like that, and you just run the football essentially with
- 17:35Speaker 1: your receivers. And that's what the Niners did in that
- 17:38Speaker 1: game at nauseum, and it worked to professionally. Do you
- 17:40Speaker 1: think that McDaniel or you know whoever, they saw a
- 17:44Speaker 1: lighter box and said, you know, let's try to do
- 17:48Speaker 1: let's try to run it, and the Patriots were able
- 17:50Speaker 1: to still stop it, even you know, with the extra
- 17:52Speaker 1: backs on the field. Maybe I just I think that
- 17:58Speaker 1: there was an element of this game where to your point,
- 18:01Speaker 1: Mike McDaniel, I think overthought it, honestly, where maybe that
- 18:07Speaker 1: he looked at the three and four safety packages the
- 18:10Speaker 1: Patriots are going out there with, he looked at the
- 18:12Speaker 1: depleted secondary. You know that you're missing the rookie Jones
- 18:15Speaker 1: is you're missing Jalen Mills and we have Tyreek killing
- 18:18Speaker 1: Jalen Waddle, and we think that we can just beat
- 18:20Speaker 1: you on the outside in this game. But they're running
- 18:23Speaker 1: vertical concepts with those guys and they're trying to get
- 18:26Speaker 1: the ball down the field, and there were a few
- 18:28Speaker 1: opportunities where they could have gotten it down the field,
- 18:30Speaker 1: but Bridgewater just didn't trust himself to hit the you know,
- 18:33Speaker 1: the hit the holes in the zone coverage, and the
- 18:35Speaker 1: Patriots just basically said, hey, we're gonna run cover two
- 18:39Speaker 1: and if he's gonna hit it in the cover two
- 18:40Speaker 1: hole along the sideline on a dot to Tyree Hill
- 18:43Speaker 1: and he's gonna beat us like that, then so be it.
- 18:45Speaker 1: But we don't think he can do it, and he didn't.
- 18:47Speaker 1: He didn't even try, So if that's the game plan,
- 18:51Speaker 1: I just thought that from a Mike McDaniel standpoint, Tyree
- 18:55Speaker 1: killing Jalen Waddle did not have the ball in their
- 18:57Speaker 1: hands nearly enough in this game. They just if you're
- 19:00Speaker 1: the Miami Dolphins, those are by far your two best players,
- 19:04Speaker 1: especially when your quarterback is out. And the fact that
- 19:06Speaker 1: they only touched the ball I think eight or nine
- 19:08Speaker 1: times in this one is a detriment to the coach.
- 19:12Speaker 1: And you look at the touchdown that they scored with TYRK.
- 19:14Speaker 1: Hill was on one of those motions swing it out
- 19:16Speaker 1: into the into the boundary and and let him out
- 19:19Speaker 1: run everybody to the pylon. And then that was pretty
- 19:21Speaker 1: much the only time they even tried to do that. Okay,
- 19:24Speaker 1: all right, Paul signed, gazing off into I was watching
- 19:29Speaker 1: the commercials Okay, sorry, every time the footage comes up
- 19:33Speaker 1: just from the game, it's I know, didn't I tell
- 19:36Speaker 1: all of a sudden, just getting stuck watching it. Yeah. Yeah.
- 19:38Speaker 1: So so Patriots, you know, pulled back to five hundred
- 19:42Speaker 1: with the win, and we'll see what happens. You know,
- 19:47Speaker 1: I listen. I you know, I know we're not going
- 19:51Speaker 1: to talk about the Bills game. But I before last night,
- 19:55Speaker 1: I was hoping that the Bills had something to play
- 19:58Speaker 1: for and that they come out, you know, needing to
- 20:01Speaker 1: win the game and just you know, let's play a
- 20:05Speaker 1: game like that rather than you know, Patriots won. But
- 20:09Speaker 1: you know I hate that. Yeah, now you got it.
- 20:13Speaker 1: There's no way around I mean, unless this game has
- 20:15Speaker 1: played two weeks out, if it's played Sunday, I don't
- 20:18Speaker 1: I mean, I don't, like you said, I don't even
- 20:20Speaker 1: know how Buffalo can turn the page. And you know
- 20:23Speaker 1: tomorrow is supposed to be day one. I mean, they're
- 20:24Speaker 1: probably supposed to be in the building today getting the game.
- 20:26Speaker 1: But both such a unique sport. You know, it's why
- 20:29Speaker 1: you can't really have a Pro Bowl game because you
- 20:32Speaker 1: can't play it. You know, like, how do you if
- 20:35Speaker 1: you're a Patriot line somebody up and hit him as
- 20:40Speaker 1: hard as you can with with what happened, you know
- 20:42Speaker 1: what I mean, It's just like like I'm gonna just
- 20:45Speaker 1: demolish you. Wait a minute, it's somebody I forget. A
- 20:48Speaker 1: former player tweeted out I'm not sure might have been
- 20:50Speaker 1: Ryan Clark, but just said, like the next snap of
- 20:52Speaker 1: football is going to be the hardest one. It is
- 20:54Speaker 1: for everybody. Yeah, and you know I agree with that,
- 20:56Speaker 1: and once you get going, you'll get back into it.
- 20:58Speaker 1: But I mean it's you know, even just a movie
- 21:00Speaker 1: talking about it here, and Paul was mentioned in you know,
- 21:02Speaker 1: an incident in baseball where this kind of thing, right,
- 21:05Speaker 1: you know, can happen, and you know, even me with
- 21:07Speaker 1: a kid in little league, it's you know, I think
- 21:08Speaker 1: it just affects everybody. It's bigger than football. It's not
- 21:11Speaker 1: just a football you know unique thing. These are, you know,
- 21:13Speaker 1: kind of injuries and things that can happen. It's just
- 21:16Speaker 1: about any sports, right circumciance. With the amount of sports
- 21:19Speaker 1: that are played in the United States, from youth all
- 21:22Speaker 1: the way to pro the amazing thing is this doesn't
- 21:24Speaker 1: happen more often. Yeah, I mean it does happen. Literally
- 21:27Speaker 1: lacrosse a Kidden Cornell died with a direct hit from
- 21:31Speaker 1: a ball to his chest. You know, it happens. But
- 21:34Speaker 1: like with all the sports we play in this country,
- 21:36Speaker 1: like the fact that it doesn't happen more often. Were
- 21:39Speaker 1: you ever scared with your tennis fourhand that you were
- 21:40Speaker 1: gonna take well, other people were, yeah, my curse coming out.
- 21:47Speaker 1: But uh no, But like you know, so like like
- 21:51Speaker 1: I don't know, like what, like I'm sure there's counseling
- 21:54Speaker 1: that's available to players and everything like that, but you know,
- 21:58Speaker 1: it's important that they understand that, like this isn't just
- 22:02Speaker 1: because of football. This is because of you know, we're
- 22:07Speaker 1: human beings and we're not meant to take direct hits.
- 22:11Speaker 1: And like Paul, you know you would say and you
- 22:13Speaker 1: know your wife is a nurse at MGAU and asked general,
- 22:16Speaker 1: and like these happen because like the impact comes at
- 22:21Speaker 1: this like it's a blunt force that exactly the moment
- 22:26Speaker 1: when something's firing inside and it just it's like an
- 22:30Speaker 1: electrical short circuit. And it does happen in Little league baseball.
- 22:34Speaker 1: And I won't say like every year, but like you
- 22:37Speaker 1: hear about it every every couple of years as a
- 22:39Speaker 1: port Like eleven year old kid takes a fastball in
- 22:43Speaker 1: the chest and they have less protection at the worst time.
- 22:45Speaker 1: They don't have the muscle protection that you know in
- 22:48Speaker 1: you know, Mike and I were talking about it. This
- 22:50Speaker 1: is why all little league fields now are equipped with
- 22:53Speaker 1: the you know, the devices to to see if you know,
- 22:57Speaker 1: you can prevent a tragedy when it does happen, because
- 22:59Speaker 1: it can happen. Yeah, and you talked about lacrosse. It
- 23:03Speaker 1: happens too often, you know. But I know this is
- 23:09Speaker 1: gonna be this is gonna be a tough week for football.
- 23:11Speaker 1: And I know that's not anybody on anybody's importance you
- 23:14Speaker 1: know right now, of any of any importance right now.
- 23:16Speaker 1: But you watch you watch how the next few days, Yeah,
- 23:21Speaker 1: it'll be the attack on football again, right, you know,
- 23:24Speaker 1: so like like you said, the next snap is going
- 23:26Speaker 1: to be the toughest one for whoever is involved. That's
- 23:31Speaker 1: you know, that's absolutely true, you know, especially with it,
- 23:35Speaker 1: it just looked like such a routine play, Like you
- 23:37Speaker 1: have to watch it over and be like, wait, what
- 23:39Speaker 1: even happened? And it's just it was it was It's
- 23:41Speaker 1: a freak thing. You know. It wasn't like a concussion
- 23:45Speaker 1: where oh yeah you got hit in the head or
- 23:47Speaker 1: its head hit the ground or whiplash or whatever. It
- 23:50Speaker 1: was just a freak, you know, um getting hit by
- 23:54Speaker 1: lightning type of thing. You know. So can I can
- 23:59Speaker 1: I shine a little positive light on Kyle Dugger? I
- 24:01Speaker 1: don't know, I just want to shift gears maybe a
- 24:02Speaker 1: little bit, all right. I just was feeling, you know,
- 24:06Speaker 1: third touchdown this year, and you know, I know I've
- 24:09Speaker 1: been up and down on him a little bit this
- 24:10Speaker 1: year with some of the inconsistencies and coverage, But um,
- 24:13Speaker 1: I just I thought it was interesting Jude On saying
- 24:16Speaker 1: You're gonna have to give Dugger a blank check, and
- 24:18Speaker 1: I was like, oh man, that's the last thing the
- 24:20Speaker 1: Patriots want to hear right now. But you know, I think, uh,
- 24:23Speaker 1: you know, Paul was talking about this a little bit too.
- 24:25Speaker 1: Just I think, you know, you're starting to see some
- 24:27Speaker 1: young players come on a little bit here, and you know,
- 24:29Speaker 1: we talked about free agency, and you know, is that
- 24:33Speaker 1: I don't know. I part of me just wants to
- 24:35Speaker 1: like reinvest in our own guys. And I just I'm
- 24:37Speaker 1: kind of getting sick. As much as I've been a
- 24:39Speaker 1: little bit on I don't want to say on the fence,
- 24:41Speaker 1: but a little bit critical of of Dugger's overall game,
- 24:45Speaker 1: it makes me sick to think about letting a player
- 24:47Speaker 1: like that get away again, you know, and and that's
- 24:49Speaker 1: and those are the things like and you know, j
- 24:51Speaker 1: not quite the same for me, Like I feel like
- 24:53Speaker 1: he's still a very specific third down kind of role,
- 24:55Speaker 1: which you know, generally you could probably find from you know,
- 24:58Speaker 1: and Andre Carter or is you know you got to
- 25:00Speaker 1: get a vent in for one year, Chris Long those
- 25:02Speaker 1: kind of guys. But you know, I just I just
- 25:04Speaker 1: wonder overall the feeling of these drafts haven't been good enough.
- 25:08Speaker 1: Like a way that you can kind of force that
- 25:10Speaker 1: issue is by resigning the players. They gotta pay somebody. Yeah,
- 25:14Speaker 1: you know, you spent a second round pick on duggerum
- 25:18Speaker 1: and he's panned out like, Okay, that was a good pick. Yeah,
- 25:22Speaker 1: you know, yeah, that's what you know the notebook that
- 25:25Speaker 1: I posted, but I don't know if it's up yet, um,
- 25:28Speaker 1: but you know, for this morning, you know, there is
- 25:31Speaker 1: at least put the playoffs on the back burner and
- 25:34Speaker 1: whether or not you think that they they're worthy or
- 25:37Speaker 1: you know, that's irrelevant. You know, you went from having
- 25:41Speaker 1: I think four draft classes in succession where I think
- 25:44Speaker 1: you got Damien Harris that's it. Now the last three
- 25:49Speaker 1: years again there might not be any Pro Bowl like
- 25:53Speaker 1: all pro you know, Hall of Fame type players, but
- 25:57Speaker 1: it's now dugger ouch when you in twenty and you know,
- 26:02Speaker 1: obviously the three guys from last year with mac barmore
- 26:04Speaker 1: and Stevenson and you know, we'll see about this year.
- 26:07Speaker 1: But you know, Marcus Jones is already playing a huge
- 26:09Speaker 1: role for you and we'll see about the rest of
- 26:11Speaker 1: the guys because there's been a lot of other guys
- 26:13Speaker 1: that have made contributions at least and you know, on
- 26:17Speaker 1: a short term basis. Yeah, you know, Marcus Jones has
- 26:19Speaker 1: been consistently a contributor. Now for the last three quarters
- 26:23Speaker 1: of the season, you know. So we'll see about Jack Jones,
- 26:25Speaker 1: we'll see about the two running backs, Kevin Harris and
- 26:28Speaker 1: Pierre Strong. If they can, they can be part of it.
- 26:30Speaker 1: But that's how you get out of this. Yeah, you
- 26:32Speaker 1: can't get out of it by spending two hundred and
- 26:34Speaker 1: seventy million guaranteed money in free agency, right right. The
- 26:38Speaker 1: only way you can get out of it just by
- 26:40Speaker 1: stacking draft classes. And I think they've had a you know,
- 26:43Speaker 1: three in a row now that I'm not telling you
- 26:46Speaker 1: that it's like the seventy four Steelers, but you've had
- 26:49Speaker 1: three in a row now that you've gotten contributors out
- 26:51Speaker 1: of ye. Tugger is an awesome player. I know that
- 26:54Speaker 1: he gets some flack for the man coverage stuff and
- 26:56Speaker 1: every once in a while he gets a little bit
- 26:58Speaker 1: loose in his zone, but the amount of hats that
- 27:00Speaker 1: they ask him to wear in this defense, he's the
- 27:03Speaker 1: most versatile player in the defense by far, and he
- 27:05Speaker 1: does all of them at at least a starting caliber level,
- 27:09Speaker 1: like not necessarily elite at everything. I think he still
- 27:13Speaker 1: has some stuff that he needs to work out in coverage,
- 27:16Speaker 1: you know, some instinctual stuff in terms of man technique
- 27:19Speaker 1: and maybe reading out route combinations and things like that
- 27:23Speaker 1: in zone. But that takes time to develop those types
- 27:26Speaker 1: of skills and takes experience, and maybe that can be
- 27:29Speaker 1: the last frontier of his game that comes and rounds
- 27:32Speaker 1: into form. But in terms of run defense, where he
- 27:35Speaker 1: can play in the run defense blitzing, and then the
- 27:40Speaker 1: ball hawking in zone when they do allow him to
- 27:42Speaker 1: kind of roam in the middle and zone, he's just
- 27:45Speaker 1: been a really impactful player at all three levels of
- 27:49Speaker 1: the defense. You bring up a good point too, because
- 27:51Speaker 1: if you listen to the way his teammates talk about him,
- 27:54Speaker 1: it makes it seem like he hasn't even scratched the surface. King. Yeah,
- 27:57Speaker 1: I mean you don't want him being that he's safety
- 28:00Speaker 1: that's in the back of the defense, because he's just
- 28:03Speaker 1: too valuable up up close. I'd though, but who replaces mccordy.
- 28:07Speaker 1: Does he replace mccordy. Yeah, I thought it was, But
- 28:11Speaker 1: I thought it was interesting to listen to Bill earlier
- 28:13Speaker 1: in the week, I think on the Monday. Yeah, say,
- 28:15Speaker 1: we've seen him at free a lot. Well, he talks
- 28:17Speaker 1: about free free. So he played free safety at Lenore
- 28:20Speaker 1: Ryan and they were for the most part a split
- 28:24Speaker 1: safety defense, so they played a lot of quarters, which
- 28:28Speaker 1: is different than playing center field obviously, so it's it's
- 28:30Speaker 1: a little bit of a different role. But I've always
- 28:33Speaker 1: loved his ability to really ball hawk in the back end,
- 28:37Speaker 1: and I've always felt like when they put him on
- 28:40Speaker 1: a tight end, for example, and I get, somebody's got
- 28:43Speaker 1: to cover the tight end when you're gonna play as
- 28:44Speaker 1: much man coverage as the Patriots do, but I thought
- 28:47Speaker 1: it really it boxes him in right where he can't
- 28:51Speaker 1: be around the football, and he's at his best when
- 28:53Speaker 1: he's allowed to just go see ball, get ball, And
- 28:56Speaker 1: when they make him guard the tight end, it turns
- 28:58Speaker 1: him into like Patrick right where he's just got the
- 29:01Speaker 1: tight end and the rest of the of the play
- 29:03Speaker 1: doesn't necessarily matter to him as much. But when they're
- 29:06Speaker 1: allowing him to be that free player in the middle
- 29:10Speaker 1: of the defense, he's a much more impactful. I think
- 29:13Speaker 1: the guy that they are trying to get him to
- 29:15Speaker 1: emulate is more like Rodney Harrison, who's somebody that wasn't
- 29:19Speaker 1: really a guy that went one on one with the
- 29:22Speaker 1: tight end a whole lot. Don't don't tell that to
- 29:26Speaker 1: Ernie Adams. Yeah, he did. Arnie Adams say he told us,
- 29:35Speaker 1: he told us the games in which they wouldn't have
- 29:38Speaker 1: won unless Rodney Harrison went one on one with their interesting. Okay,
- 29:45Speaker 1: I definitely trust Ernie a little bit more than me
- 29:48Speaker 1: on this, But I will say that I always remember
- 29:51Speaker 1: Rodney Harrison being a guy that that had his eyes
- 29:54Speaker 1: in the backfield for most of the time, right, Yeah,
- 29:57Speaker 1: And that was sort of the player that he was,
- 30:00Speaker 1: and that was at an era when strong safety was
- 30:03Speaker 1: really a thing. Now strong safety is not really as
- 30:05Speaker 1: much of a thing anymore, so it's different. But I
- 30:08Speaker 1: think that that's really what I think Dugger is at
- 30:12Speaker 1: his best is when he's instinctively just being an athlete,
- 30:15Speaker 1: whether that's dropping in zone or blitzing or playing the
- 30:20Speaker 1: run or whatever. When they asked him to play man
- 30:22Speaker 1: coverage on tight ends, I just don't feel like his
- 30:25Speaker 1: impact on the game is as much as it can
- 30:28Speaker 1: be when he's allowed to see the football all the time,
- 30:30Speaker 1: because then you get the turnovers and you get the
- 30:32Speaker 1: tackles for loss in the run game, and he had
- 30:35Speaker 1: some good run sticks in this game as well. It
- 30:37Speaker 1: wasn't just the pick six. He was coming downhill him,
- 30:41Speaker 1: you know, yeah, and they don't want to lose that. Yeah,
- 30:44Speaker 1: all right, eight five five Pass five hundred is the
- 30:46Speaker 1: ACE ticket. Hut Line web radio at patriot dot com
- 30:50Speaker 1: is the email address. I will open it up to callers.
- 30:56Speaker 1: Some programming notes though, Catch twenty two is gonna be
- 31:00Speaker 1: tomorrow Thursday. We moved the Thursday before this show, so
- 31:03Speaker 1: ten thirty Thursday, leading up into PU so it'll be
- 31:06Speaker 1: our lead in, but it'll be on video. It'll be
- 31:09Speaker 1: on video. Yeah, and then we'll be on video too.
- 31:11Speaker 1: So yeah, okay, So that's they're just wanted to hopefully,
- 31:14Speaker 1: i mean, assuming everything gets, you know, back on track
- 31:16Speaker 1: at some point. Yeah. All right, Um, let's go to
- 31:19Speaker 1: the callers and emailers. I'm sure people have things they
- 31:23Speaker 1: want to talk about. Sean's in Vancouver, what's up, Sean?
- 31:28Speaker 1: All right? To Marry you were commenting, and I saw
- 31:32Speaker 1: the same thing when I was watching my not Tomorrow.
- 31:37Speaker 1: I'm sorry, no worries, oh my god, but it seemed like, yeah,
- 31:43Speaker 1: it's kind of routine. And Paul, you were mentioning how
- 31:47Speaker 1: this happens in other sports, and I've heard that as
- 31:49Speaker 1: well with baseballs, and uh, it just seems so so
- 31:53Speaker 1: crazy because I've never seen that before in the NFL,
- 31:58Speaker 1: That's right, Is this just like just a crazy weird
- 32:03Speaker 1: like you said, strike, lightning strikes. You know this at
- 32:06Speaker 1: this very moment, because it did. I couldn't see anything
- 32:09Speaker 1: that that really was out of the unordinary, Right, Yeah,
- 32:12Speaker 1: it was. That's why, like you know, um, they've taught
- 32:16Speaker 1: who was a Jerry Hughes they were talking about who
- 32:18Speaker 1: had a heart attack and died after the game. I
- 32:20Speaker 1: think that was nineteen seventy one. That was fifty years ago. Um,
- 32:25Speaker 1: we've never seen this. I mean, everybody that was on
- 32:27Speaker 1: TV last night, Aikman, Booger, you know, everybody. It's like
- 32:33Speaker 1: we've we've never seen this before, you know, Um, it
- 32:37Speaker 1: is it's it's it's a it's a rare thing, uh,
- 32:42Speaker 1: that we witnessed. And that's kind of what rattles us
- 32:45Speaker 1: is that we don't see this a lot. We see
- 32:47Speaker 1: the guys that you know, they get the head injury
- 32:49Speaker 1: and they can't move their feet and we're waiting for
- 32:52Speaker 1: them to, you know, move something. We see that like
- 32:55Speaker 1: what at least once a season because they're willing them off.
- 33:00Speaker 1: So we've almost become numb to that, but this is different.
- 33:03Speaker 1: You know, to see someone being given CPR on the
- 33:09Speaker 1: field is a traumatic thing. Like this person could die
- 33:12Speaker 1: right in front of me. You know, that's a traumatic thing.
- 33:15Speaker 1: And I know things like like Hank Gathers remember him
- 33:17Speaker 1: and yeah that was yeah, and Reggie Lewis, But weren't
- 33:19Speaker 1: those heart conditions that were like it wasn't just like
- 33:22Speaker 1: totally differently, they were different. And Reggie happened in practice,
- 33:27Speaker 1: you know, And so we didn't shooting around. Yeah, no,
- 33:30Speaker 1: we didn't see it live on TV. You know. Condition
- 33:34Speaker 1: this is just yeah, out of the blue. Yeah, you know.
- 33:38Speaker 1: On another topic, we've talked a lot about how much
- 33:42Speaker 1: we think there should be done in the offseason for
- 33:45Speaker 1: the offense in terms of coaching and the offensive line,
- 33:47Speaker 1: wide receiver. But a little bit less attention is on
- 33:51Speaker 1: special teams, and I think that needs to be dressed
- 33:53Speaker 1: as well. Changes on special teams. So what are some
- 33:57Speaker 1: of the things you'd like to see in terms of
- 33:59Speaker 1: maybe essence for a coach for special teams. You already
- 34:03Speaker 1: got him, he's on this team right now. You think
- 34:06Speaker 1: he'll be good enough to do that? Like then, I
- 34:08Speaker 1: guess he's done it. He was the coordinator, you know, yeah,
- 34:12Speaker 1: and they and the numbers were good when he was
- 34:15Speaker 1: you know, for special teams, you know, a lot of
- 34:18Speaker 1: you know, like it's it's just dumb mistakes. It's running
- 34:21Speaker 1: into the punter twice already, that that really costs them.
- 34:25Speaker 1: We are so in the margins when this stuff is
- 34:27Speaker 1: an impact though, Like that that's the thing. And like
- 34:29Speaker 1: I'm not saying that it's not a factor, because it
- 34:31Speaker 1: certainly is a factor. But the fact that every single
- 34:34Speaker 1: time they run into the punter, it's like this huge
- 34:37Speaker 1: issue that they can't overcome, is like a much bigger
- 34:39Speaker 1: issue than money into the punter, right, Okay, Like you know,
- 34:43Speaker 1: fourth and six becomes fourth and one and they gave
- 34:46Speaker 1: up the first down. Now, the defense ended up getting
- 34:48Speaker 1: the stop on that drive. They didn't give up a
- 34:50Speaker 1: score on that drive. But like these are things that
- 34:53Speaker 1: like I think it's worse in Minnesota, for example, when
- 34:56Speaker 1: they when they ran into the punter at the end
- 34:57Speaker 1: of the game there, Like the defense can't get a
- 34:59Speaker 1: stop in the offense can't answer. Like that's a bigger
- 35:02Speaker 1: problem to me than the one play that happens on
- 35:05Speaker 1: special teams. It's just we're so every little thing needs
- 35:09Speaker 1: to go right, you know, And and they can't have
- 35:12Speaker 1: these like mistakes like that in the kicking game because
- 35:15Speaker 1: they're already taking on water in these games as it is,
- 35:19Speaker 1: and these mistakes just bury them even further down underneath
- 35:22Speaker 1: the surface. And that's a problem. That's that's that's the
- 35:24Speaker 1: bigger point, is the inability to overcome mistakes. And I
- 35:29Speaker 1: would say, what's the trajectory of the punter and the
- 35:31Speaker 1: kicker too, Like, what what are we looking at with
- 35:33Speaker 1: Nick Folk? Is he in a slump? Is this is
- 35:34Speaker 1: the end approaching for him? And Jake Bailey? Was this
- 35:36Speaker 1: an injury thing? They paid him a bunch of money,
- 35:39Speaker 1: you know? Is this something that's been happening and he
- 35:41Speaker 1: gets healthy, he'll be okay back on track. Or is
- 35:43Speaker 1: that something else you have to explore it to get around.
- 35:45Speaker 1: I mean, you know, obviously bigger than than coaching. Just
- 35:48Speaker 1: comes another kicker in the fifth round, Thanks Sean all Right,
- 35:52Speaker 1: Todds to North Carolina. Hey, Todd Wasser, So I was
- 35:55Speaker 1: going to start going all Perillo saying, you know, look
- 35:58Speaker 1: what they do on the field. You're supposed to make
- 35:59Speaker 1: a up quarterback look like a like a backup quarterback,
- 36:02Speaker 1: and they didn't do that with Bridgewater really well. Blah
- 36:04Speaker 1: blah blah. And I was gonna bust Evan for some
- 36:06Speaker 1: stat stuff, but I don't want me to say Evan's
- 36:08Speaker 1: right and see what he did with the Raiders when
- 36:12Speaker 1: you give him some tools, what's going on this? We're
- 36:16Speaker 1: not gonna know what mac is until he gets some tools,
- 36:19Speaker 1: I'd like. I know, we like to think that he
- 36:20Speaker 1: has them, but he doesn't. For God's sake, stud him
- 36:23Speaker 1: can play that well against one of the best defenses
- 36:25Speaker 1: in the NFL. Okay, but it was one game, you know,
- 36:28Speaker 1: so I think the better examples Brock really, to be
- 36:33Speaker 1: honest with you, like ither one of them are on him.
- 36:35Speaker 1: I'm all for this call because it supports me, But
- 36:38Speaker 1: I think the better argument is Brock Purdy right, like
- 36:41Speaker 1: he's been doing this for a month now, and they
- 36:43Speaker 1: drop him in the same offense and Jimmy G. Also,
- 36:47Speaker 1: let's face it, Jimmy G is not this like tools.
- 36:49Speaker 1: He Josh Allen justin Herbert Cyborg and they play him
- 36:52Speaker 1: in that offense, and that offense is a top five,
- 36:55Speaker 1: top ten offense with Jimmy in there. Every single year,
- 36:58Speaker 1: every single year. They have great offense in San Francisco
- 37:01Speaker 1: with Jimmy And that's what I've been saying all along.
- 37:04Speaker 1: Now the Niners are they're a very difficult bar to reach, right, Like,
- 37:09Speaker 1: they have great playmakers, they have great scheme, all that
- 37:13Speaker 1: kind of stuff. But at the same time, you know
- 37:15Speaker 1: that that's well, that's going to be the different Todd
- 37:18Speaker 1: is you know, are we able to fairly judge Mac
- 37:23Speaker 1: Jones this year? I think I don't think we are
- 37:26Speaker 1: right now. I really feel we are, and I don't know.
- 37:30Speaker 1: I think a lot of people agree with I mean,
- 37:33Speaker 1: I would agree basically with Todd, but I also would
- 37:35Speaker 1: say that not every team gets Davante Adams, you know,
- 37:37Speaker 1: Like I mean, yes, you need good weapons, and that's
- 37:41Speaker 1: been a hindrance for Mac. But at the same time,
- 37:43Speaker 1: like you still have to be able to make things
- 37:45Speaker 1: happen when those guys, because it's like to premier, I
- 37:49Speaker 1: don't I don't even want Davonte Adams. That's like, just
- 37:51Speaker 1: give me somebody who's consistent, you know, somebody who's better
- 37:54Speaker 1: than number sixteen. Number sixteen for us is amazing. He's
- 37:57Speaker 1: like yeah, but he's not. He's a third he's your
- 38:00Speaker 1: third on the depth chart, he's your consistent if Adams. Yeah, yeah,
- 38:08Speaker 1: But I think his point is is that it doesn't
- 38:10Speaker 1: even need to reach of Davante Adams level. Higgins would
- 38:16Speaker 1: be the number one, Right, you have so little that
- 38:18Speaker 1: you can't even judge the quarterback. And yeah, we don't
- 38:20Speaker 1: have the best that maybe a top five receiver in
- 38:22Speaker 1: the game, but we still have enough to know that
- 38:24Speaker 1: our quarterback is pretty good and can make things work
- 38:27Speaker 1: with guys that maybe aren't the most elite guys. But
- 38:29Speaker 1: I agree with your point, Todd. I mean, I think
- 38:31Speaker 1: that it is below the pail of you know, how
- 38:34Speaker 1: much you need to be able to give a guy.
- 38:38Speaker 1: I'm not I'm not. I'm not saying this as a
- 38:40Speaker 1: detriment of Jacobe Myers, because I think he's a good player,
- 38:43Speaker 1: and this is more about the roster construction. But if
- 38:46Speaker 1: you took every single team's leading receiver one through thirty two, like,
- 38:50Speaker 1: where does Myer's rank in that conversation, it's definitely in
- 38:54Speaker 1: the bottom half. Like I know, agree, it might even
- 38:57Speaker 1: be bottom five, right, So, so he's a very low
- 39:01Speaker 1: end number one receiver with the Patriots. So I'm not
- 39:04Speaker 1: even asking them to go out and get Davante Adams
- 39:06Speaker 1: or to go out and get Jamar Chase or someone
- 39:08Speaker 1: like that. But I look at these teams last night
- 39:12Speaker 1: before what obviously happened, and you just look at when
- 39:16Speaker 1: Cincinnati was here, and like te Higgins would be the
- 39:19Speaker 1: best receiver on the Patriots roster, and he's this number
- 39:21Speaker 1: two guy in Cincinnati. Gabriel Davis might be the number
- 39:25Speaker 1: one guy in New England if he was here, and
- 39:27Speaker 1: he's the number two guys to find Diggs in Buffalo.
- 39:29Speaker 1: So you have you start to get down the order
- 39:32Speaker 1: of those teams that have good offenses. You know, Miami
- 39:36Speaker 1: comes in here with two number one receivers and you
- 39:39Speaker 1: know if you had a top flight receiver on the Patriots,
- 39:43Speaker 1: it would MIAs would be even better. Yeah, it would
- 39:45Speaker 1: make him better. You know. I just think that, you know,
- 39:48Speaker 1: the ultimately, the thing that I always say with Mac
- 39:52Speaker 1: is that there's enough good there on film with him,
- 39:56Speaker 1: especially in recent weeks, Like I would say, since really
- 39:59Speaker 1: thanks give except maybe in Buffalo. But in that game,
- 40:02Speaker 1: I think it was more the game plan was to
- 40:04Speaker 1: throw the ball shot and it just didn't really work.
- 40:06Speaker 1: But I think from Thanksgiving on. There was enough there
- 40:09Speaker 1: to not necessarily say that he's going to be this
- 40:12Speaker 1: great franchise, long term answer quarterback, but to go into
- 40:15Speaker 1: year three thinking that we, you know, let's get let's
- 40:18Speaker 1: let's see what we got with him in year three.
- 40:20Speaker 1: And now these people that want to just give up
- 40:23Speaker 1: on him and right now after two seasons, I think
- 40:26Speaker 1: are rushing to judgment. I mean, you know, it would
- 40:29Speaker 1: be great to be a fly on the wall in
- 40:31Speaker 1: the quarterback room or when they're doing film, because what
- 40:34Speaker 1: we're not seeing the evident mistakes that we've saw earlier,
- 40:38Speaker 1: but we don't know what he's missing. Oh I know
- 40:41Speaker 1: what he's missing. Yeah, I'm not in the meetings, but
- 40:46Speaker 1: I can see it on the film. And like there's
- 40:48Speaker 1: decisions from this last game against the Dolphins where I
- 40:52Speaker 1: thought he struggled once Miami adjusted to zone and they
- 40:56Speaker 1: adjusted to zone, and his reads are the short part
- 40:59Speaker 1: of the field were iffy against zone. You know, you're
- 41:02Speaker 1: running like snag concepts where Nelson aglor is running a
- 41:06Speaker 1: hook and then you're running a receiver into the flat
- 41:09Speaker 1: and you're just trying to read out where does the
- 41:11Speaker 1: zone dropper go? Does he go with the flatter, does
- 41:13Speaker 1: he stay inside and you throw where he isn't right
- 41:17Speaker 1: and it's there to Nelson aglore and he just makes
- 41:20Speaker 1: the wrong read. And that's those types of things give
- 41:24Speaker 1: me concerns more so than I think. Where I come
- 41:28Speaker 1: from with it is that a lot of people's concerns
- 41:30Speaker 1: with mac Jones are number one, like raw talent, right,
- 41:34Speaker 1: just raw arm talent and tools, and then number two
- 41:38Speaker 1: and boomers. Sison went on EI yesterday what he said
- 41:41Speaker 1: it was kind of unfair. Yeah, but this ultimately to me,
- 41:44Speaker 1: Fred is such a big part of this mac Jones discourse,
- 41:47Speaker 1: and that is that people just don't like, Yeah, he's
- 41:51Speaker 1: just his aesthetic is bad. He doesn't have swagger, his
- 41:54Speaker 1: body language is bad. You know when he has a
- 41:57Speaker 1: bad play, it looks really ugly and you know, they
- 42:00Speaker 1: blitz up the middle and he can't get out of
- 42:02Speaker 1: the blitz and then he's kind of you know, flailing
- 42:05Speaker 1: around on the intentional grounding last week, and people are
- 42:08Speaker 1: just like, it's just it just ugly, right, right, But
- 42:12Speaker 1: when you actually take out of it, the the aesthetic
- 42:15Speaker 1: of it and how it looks, you know, what what
- 42:20Speaker 1: what what is? What is it? How did we get here, like,
- 42:24Speaker 1: what's the mistake on the play? Right? Like? What why?
- 42:27Speaker 1: What's the mistake? Is the mistake that the quarterback missed
- 42:29Speaker 1: the read? Either the quarterback held the ball too long,
- 42:33Speaker 1: or is it that on third and one they called
- 42:35Speaker 1: play action in the landon Roberts was in the backfield
- 42:38Speaker 1: in a half a second? Right, Like, where's the mistake
- 42:40Speaker 1: on the play? And I think more times than not,
- 42:43Speaker 1: there's a lot more times where I would say there's
- 42:47Speaker 1: mistakes happening that are out of his control. And then
- 42:51Speaker 1: that's that's what I don't know, right, Yeah, And that's
- 42:54Speaker 1: what I think. You know, fans don't know, and they're
- 42:58Speaker 1: they're they're going in with the bias, and you know,
- 43:01Speaker 1: if they don't like Mac to begin with, then it's
- 43:03Speaker 1: his mistake. If you don't like Matt Patricia, it's I
- 43:06Speaker 1: don't think there were too many people that entered the
- 43:07Speaker 1: year not like me Mac. I think everybody was pretty
- 43:10Speaker 1: much an agreement solid rookie year, something to build on.
- 43:13Speaker 1: He's the guy for the future, and I think a
- 43:15Speaker 1: lot of people have changed their opinions. I don't think
- 43:17Speaker 1: it's a predisplay. I think dislike of Mac. I think
- 43:20Speaker 1: um I think there were both. I think there were
- 43:22Speaker 1: a lot of people on the fence, and then those
- 43:24Speaker 1: people on the fence have now picked a side. You know,
- 43:27Speaker 1: I don't think Zappi's performance is really and that didn't
- 43:30Speaker 1: help there. Yeah, that didn't help Mac getting helped off
- 43:32Speaker 1: the field. That didn't help either, which time, Yes, he
- 43:39Speaker 1: wants to be starting. Everybody doesn't even what's your take then?
- 43:44Speaker 1: I mean, I just wish that I played under those circumstances.
- 43:47Speaker 1: Everything I did right, it was me. Everything I did
- 43:49Speaker 1: wrong was because I was putting a bad business. But
- 43:50Speaker 1: that's not what Evans said. That's kind of what people say,
- 43:53Speaker 1: like third and one, like, okay, bad play call. I
- 43:56Speaker 1: called that that was part of my bad list on Sunday, right.
- 43:59Speaker 1: I thought that was herrific. Evan and I talked about
- 44:01Speaker 1: it live during the game. Yeah, not allowed to try
- 44:04Speaker 1: to like make something out of the play. But but okay,
- 44:06Speaker 1: so every quarterback's going to make mistakes, and you know,
- 44:09Speaker 1: the younger you are, probably the more mistakes you are.
- 44:12Speaker 1: I think the question that people are asking is if
- 44:15Speaker 1: the other things were okay, then I think I could
- 44:18Speaker 1: have anybody playing quarterback. I go back to the Belichick things. Yeah,
- 44:21Speaker 1: if as long as I have a guy with a
- 44:23Speaker 1: reasonable amount of ability and intelligence, I'm going to do
- 44:27Speaker 1: all the work for him, and I can be brock
- 44:29Speaker 1: purty to it. I just think that right now. The
- 44:32Speaker 1: biggest thing to me, like the third and one, like
- 44:34Speaker 1: what do you want him to do? Like Landon Roberts
- 44:36Speaker 1: is I hate? I hate. I'm not defending that anything
- 44:41Speaker 1: about that place, right I just don't know what you
- 44:42Speaker 1: want him to do there. But I just don't think
- 44:45Speaker 1: that he can overcome anything that goes bad. That's my point. Okay,
- 44:49Speaker 1: But you know, the ball to Hunter Henry, He's got
- 44:52Speaker 1: Jayleen Phillips like right in his face and he throws
- 44:55Speaker 1: it right staring down the barrel. And I didn't say
- 44:57Speaker 1: he's incapable of making any place. I just think that
- 44:59Speaker 1: those types of plays happen more than people give him
- 45:02Speaker 1: credit for, because I think a lot of people are
- 45:05Speaker 1: just out on him, and I think a lot of
- 45:07Speaker 1: people have already made up their mind. I think a
- 45:08Speaker 1: lot of people like Dani Rolovski, who can continues to
- 45:13Speaker 1: bang the drum, I think out of pure hatred of Matt.
- 45:15Speaker 1: Patricia from Detroit is calling these plays out like this,
- 45:21Speaker 1: guy can't play. I mean, oh, okay, now I get it.
- 45:24Speaker 1: If you make three NFL caliber throws, everybody that is
- 45:29Speaker 1: down on him is wrong, I get it. I mean, like,
- 45:32Speaker 1: so like you say that, like people will predisposed to
- 45:34Speaker 1: not like him. I'm not predisposed to not like him.
- 45:37Speaker 1: I'm unsure of whether or not he could be a
- 45:39Speaker 1: franchise quarterback. Yeah, I am too, but that's that's not
- 45:43Speaker 1: a predisposition. I think there are a lot of guys
- 45:44Speaker 1: that are predisposed to think that he's the man, right,
- 45:48Speaker 1: because that's what they thought coming out of college. He
- 45:50Speaker 1: was the most NFL ready. That's the way that they
- 45:52Speaker 1: all viewed him. And now, no matter what happens, it's
- 45:55Speaker 1: the structures full I think for those people, like even
- 45:58Speaker 1: those people that said he the most NFL ready said,
- 46:01Speaker 1: but he's got a ceiling. But he's got a ceiling,
- 46:04Speaker 1: and now those people like, yeah, but the things that
- 46:07Speaker 1: we thought that he had going for him, which was
- 46:10Speaker 1: the accuracy, the recognition, you know, we're not seeing that,
- 46:16Speaker 1: you know, and so yeah, I mean I think that's
- 46:18Speaker 1: why I don't think you've seen pois. But I think
- 46:20Speaker 1: the accuracy is still. I thought, like that's throw that
- 46:22Speaker 1: Evan's talking about. To Hunter him that was a great throw.
- 46:25Speaker 1: Was I still see for the most part or pretty
- 46:27Speaker 1: accurate paths. That's why I always that's why I keep
- 46:30Speaker 1: going back to the structure and the coaching of things,
- 46:32Speaker 1: because accuracy, timing, anticipation, processing, mental processing, these restraints on
- 46:41Speaker 1: his rookie tape. Right, So, like, did he all of
- 46:44Speaker 1: a sudden forget how to play football? No, of course, not,
- 46:47Speaker 1: like he didn't just forget how to read an underneath
- 46:50Speaker 1: zone overnight or in one offseason or something like that.
- 46:55Speaker 1: I don't know why how you get there that all
- 47:00Speaker 1: of a sudden. Now you know, he reads out a
- 47:02Speaker 1: trips formation and he's throwing to the wrong guy. I
- 47:05Speaker 1: don't know how we got there. But with McDaniels last year,
- 47:09Speaker 1: that ball is to Nelson Aglore. Right now, the ball
- 47:11Speaker 1: is to Jacoby Meyers in double coverage. Like, I don't
- 47:14Speaker 1: know how we made it to that point. But that's
- 47:16Speaker 1: why I'm always harping on the fact that, Okay, if
- 47:20Speaker 1: we come in next year and I'm not asking for
- 47:22Speaker 1: Davante Adams and Kyle Shanahan, like, can we just give
- 47:25Speaker 1: him some semblance of solid foundation to work with and
- 47:29Speaker 1: then he is still failing, then we can have the
- 47:32Speaker 1: conversation of let's let's move on or let's find something better.
- 47:36Speaker 1: But I'm willing to at least give him next year.
- 47:39Speaker 1: That's not to say that I'm convinced. I'm willing. There's
- 47:41Speaker 1: no way I'm pulling the plug after two years. Like no, Like,
- 47:44Speaker 1: I think these guys have to be bad guys off
- 47:47Speaker 1: the field and sabotage a locker room to not get
- 47:50Speaker 1: three years as for a first round quarterback. I mean, yeah,
- 47:53Speaker 1: you have to give him another year. Yeah, I mean
- 47:57Speaker 1: comparing last year to this year, Like, I thought Mac
- 47:59Speaker 1: was okay last year. Um, I think that he was
- 48:04Speaker 1: protected in in the way that they ran their offense,
- 48:07Speaker 1: and I think he had Josh McDaniels last year. Um,
- 48:11Speaker 1: you know you asked, like, what what happened? Where? How
- 48:14Speaker 1: do we get where we are? Well, the thing that's
- 48:16Speaker 1: changed is is who his coordinator is and who is
- 48:22Speaker 1: Yeah that's that. That's a fact, But it doesn't look
- 48:26Speaker 1: into any of the wise that Evan's talking about. Now.
- 48:28Speaker 1: I think Evan and I would probably disagree on some
- 48:30Speaker 1: of the wise. I look at last year, there was
- 48:34Speaker 1: a steady decline the second half of the season with
- 48:37Speaker 1: the almighty Josh McDaniels College. And I agree, And I
- 48:40Speaker 1: think that had at least something to do with the
- 48:43Speaker 1: fact that opposing defense has started to realize that's what
- 48:45Speaker 1: he could and couldn't do. That's right, they got tape
- 48:48Speaker 1: on him. And you know, I keep repeating it, but
- 48:52Speaker 1: it you know, it's true. The Patriots were easy to defend.
- 48:56Speaker 1: They said that last year, not this year. Last year
- 48:59Speaker 1: they said still, they're a lot easier to defend this ship. Right.
- 49:02Speaker 1: But what my point is that, you know, we talk about, oh,
- 49:04Speaker 1: he had this great rookie season, and for a rookie quarterback,
- 49:07Speaker 1: he did. And that's another part of it. I think
- 49:10Speaker 1: some of the same kinds of like I think you
- 49:11Speaker 1: would have looked at a game like they were still
- 49:13Speaker 1: easy to defend. I think you would have looked at
- 49:15Speaker 1: a game like Sunday as a fantastic game for him
- 49:17Speaker 1: last year because of the throws that Evan's talking about
- 49:20Speaker 1: right now, You're expecting more, right, like moving the ball
- 49:23Speaker 1: and scoring points. I'm a real hard greater. If you
- 49:26Speaker 1: can do those things, I'll tell you that I think
- 49:28Speaker 1: you played well. Yeah, and they don't do those things.
- 49:31Speaker 1: More often than not, they don't move it and they
- 49:32Speaker 1: don't score. I think consistency is the last frontier for him,
- 49:35Speaker 1: right because he had and that's what I wrote, and
- 49:39Speaker 1: after further review this week, is that I can make
- 49:42Speaker 1: a hitting the mic and everything Bill Belichick for here,
- 49:45Speaker 1: I can make the I can make a cut up
- 49:49Speaker 1: of him throwing the ball down the field with great
- 49:51Speaker 1: accuracy and timing or what pffles to call big time throws,
- 49:57Speaker 1: which right now he's got twenty one of them on
- 50:00Speaker 1: the year. He's actually top five in how in rate
- 50:03Speaker 1: of big time throws. Because he missed some games, he
- 50:05Speaker 1: can't really go buy the raw total. And if I
- 50:08Speaker 1: told you that Mac Jones is throwing one of those
- 50:12Speaker 1: big time downfield NFL passes, if you want to call
- 50:15Speaker 1: him that, as often as Aaron Rodgers is, oh, I
- 50:18Speaker 1: believe that. Well, Aaron Rodgers top five in the stat too.
- 50:21Speaker 1: I believe Aaron Rodgers took the first twelve weeks off
- 50:25Speaker 1: or or is as often you know, as Josh Allen
- 50:29Speaker 1: leads the league in the stat and is fractions ahead
- 50:33Speaker 1: of Mac Jones. You would probably tell me I'm crazy,
- 50:37Speaker 1: But that's That's that's the fact, right, That's like what
- 50:39Speaker 1: we're seeing. The problem is is that he has these
- 50:43Speaker 1: stretches like the middle two quarters on Sunday where the
- 50:46Speaker 1: consistency isn't there and he's not hitting layups, right, So
- 50:50Speaker 1: I think that the downfield throws are great, but you
- 50:53Speaker 1: gotta be able to consistently hit the layups on first.
- 50:56Speaker 1: And I would also like, you know, to cherry pick
- 50:59Speaker 1: a stat like that and say that he's up there
- 51:01Speaker 1: with the best in the game while not acknowledging that, like, well,
- 51:05Speaker 1: their offenses is so much better, Like I mean, the
- 51:10Speaker 1: Bills have punted like a third of the times that
- 51:12Speaker 1: the Patriots have punted this year. So yeah, maybe Josh
- 51:16Speaker 1: Allen isn't always making it with deep throws or whatever.
- 51:20Speaker 1: The big time throws a big time thing, That's what
- 51:22Speaker 1: I'm saying, though maybe it's not always big time throws,
- 51:24Speaker 1: but they're always moving the ball and they're always productive.
- 51:26Speaker 1: And when they do that step, did they take in
- 51:28Speaker 1: the consideration the attempts, Like, Okay, so he's got twenty
- 51:33Speaker 1: one big time throws, what's the percentage of attempts there?
- 51:37Speaker 1: His percentage, his percentage, the rate of which he does.
- 51:40Speaker 1: It is big time throws overpass attempts, right, So to me,
- 51:45Speaker 1: the issue isn't The issue isn't the high level throws
- 51:48Speaker 1: down the field. Like he can do that all right,
- 51:50Speaker 1: He did it on Sunday, He did it in the
- 51:53Speaker 1: second half against Cincinnati. The issue is right now with
- 51:56Speaker 1: him is the layups, right, Like hitting Hunter Henry in
- 51:58Speaker 1: the flat and it's first and ten and if you
- 52:02Speaker 1: hit Hunter Henry in the flat, it's now second and four,
- 52:05Speaker 1: but it's incomplete, so now it's second and ten, right,
- 52:08Speaker 1: or that Agalore example I gave you, Like these throws
- 52:12Speaker 1: are the ones to Paul's point, these throws are the
- 52:15Speaker 1: ones that continue drives, like these are drive starting throws,
- 52:18Speaker 1: or these are throws that keep you in second and
- 52:20Speaker 1: third and manageables to continue to move the football down
- 52:23Speaker 1: the field. And that's where you get into three and
- 52:26Speaker 1: out right. It's it's stuff to run on first down, incomplete,
- 52:30Speaker 1: on second down, incomplete, on third down, punt right because
- 52:33Speaker 1: third downs now third and nine right every single time
- 52:35Speaker 1: because you're not converting on first and second. So he's
- 52:39Speaker 1: got to do a better job on early downs of
- 52:42Speaker 1: making those easy throws. No doubt about it, and a
- 52:45Speaker 1: lot of that I think came in the short part
- 52:47Speaker 1: of the field in this last game. But that that,
- 52:50Speaker 1: to me is his last frontier. It's just the consistency
- 52:53Speaker 1: on seeing it and accurately putting the ball on receivers
- 52:59Speaker 1: every single time he drops back the past. When there's
- 53:02Speaker 1: openings in the defense. It's not always going to be open,
- 53:04Speaker 1: but when there are openings in the defense, you gotta
- 53:06Speaker 1: hit the bunnies, and he's missing too many of those
- 53:09Speaker 1: right now. All right, we're gonna take a break when

- 1:04:37Speaker 1: But you know, there's the whole the whole playoff ramifications
- 1:04:39Speaker 1: if we win, if we don't, and all that. It's
- 1:04:42Speaker 1: like we can leave that for now. Um, you know,
- 1:04:45Speaker 1: let's let's let's wait until we find out what's going
- 1:04:48Speaker 1: on with Hamlin. I could throw us into a little direction.
- 1:04:51Speaker 1: How about this is totally random, but Sean Wade can't
- 1:04:54Speaker 1: you can't, you can't dress for this game? Sean Wade. Yeah,
- 1:04:57Speaker 1: that was weird. How does he not get? How does
- 1:04:59Speaker 1: he not dress? With injuries they have and they promote
- 1:05:01Speaker 1: two guys from the practice squad and sit him? Can
- 1:05:03Speaker 1: I run my thing by Evan see if? Yeah? Maybe
- 1:05:05Speaker 1: Evan just Um in this particular game. Yeah. With the
- 1:05:10Speaker 1: the stature of the Dolphins wide receivers, small quick guys,
- 1:05:16Speaker 1: I don't really that's not Sean Wade. I don't know.
- 1:05:21Speaker 1: The larger answer is I don't know. But philosophical ques
- 1:05:23Speaker 1: I wasn't completely stunned to see him, Oh, because I
- 1:05:27Speaker 1: said to myself, where does he fit against the liability
- 1:05:30Speaker 1: on the field? Yeah? Yeah, Now the liability, I don't
- 1:05:33Speaker 1: think every time they put him on the field, he
- 1:05:34Speaker 1: gets burned every single time. I don't think he could play.
- 1:05:37Speaker 1: That's the bigger picture. But if they had bigger receivers,
- 1:05:40Speaker 1: I could understand them saying, well, we got no choice,
- 1:05:42Speaker 1: we gotta put them out. Oh yeah, that's totally fair.
- 1:05:45Speaker 1: He played one snap against Cincinnati, gave up a touchdown,
- 1:05:47Speaker 1: correct one snap, one touchdown against Minnesota pretty much the
- 1:05:52Speaker 1: same thing. Wasn't a touchdown, but he got be coming
- 1:05:54Speaker 1: across the field by Justin Jefferson on the like play
- 1:05:57Speaker 1: like six snaps. But but if you're playing eight percent zone,
- 1:06:01Speaker 1: doesn't that Isn't that a little safer for him? I suppose.
- 1:06:05Speaker 1: I just when I look, it's I think he's played
- 1:06:08Speaker 1: eighteen defensive stabs, so it's a very low failed experiment.
- 1:06:13Speaker 1: But I think when I watch him playing, take a
- 1:06:15Speaker 1: flyer on the guy doesn't look like an NFL player
- 1:06:17Speaker 1: to me. But they give up for him a fifth round. Yeah, yeah,
- 1:06:21Speaker 1: I just And I'm not killing him for it because
- 1:06:23Speaker 1: it's a minor deal. But when a team like Baltimore
- 1:06:28Speaker 1: gets rid of him, gets rid of him in his
- 1:06:30Speaker 1: rookie training camp, it tells me there's something special negatively
- 1:06:35Speaker 1: working against that guy Baltimore. Baltimore is not a team
- 1:06:39Speaker 1: that is poor in their talent evaluations. There's some teams
- 1:06:42Speaker 1: that are like for them to pull the you know,
- 1:06:45Speaker 1: the Raiders have had a litany of high draft picks
- 1:06:48Speaker 1: that they've cut first and second year, like they've missed,
- 1:06:52Speaker 1: you know, whether it be for character reasons or otherwise.
- 1:06:55Speaker 1: Baltimore is not one of those teams. So when Baltimore
- 1:06:57Speaker 1: was ready to pull the plug on a I think
- 1:06:59Speaker 1: a fifth round pick. Yeah, a fifth round pick coming
- 1:07:02Speaker 1: out of his rookie training camp. That's that's like unprecedented.
- 1:07:08Speaker 1: It's it's so weird with Sean Way two. So his
- 1:07:10Speaker 1: timeline at Ohio State in twenty nineteen, he was a
- 1:07:14Speaker 1: shutdown slot for them that people. I know, there's some
- 1:07:18Speaker 1: things out there that said he was gonna be first
- 1:07:19Speaker 1: round pick. He wasn't. He was gonna be a top
- 1:07:21Speaker 1: one hundred pick. He would have been taken on Day two,
- 1:07:23Speaker 1: but he was a good prospect. He comes back to
- 1:07:26Speaker 1: Ohio State in twenty twenty and they had to play
- 1:07:29Speaker 1: him on the outside because they just didn't have anybody
- 1:07:31Speaker 1: out there and they had to move him outside. He
- 1:07:34Speaker 1: gets injured, and then DeVante Smith took his lunch money
- 1:07:37Speaker 1: in the National Championship Game and he falls to the
- 1:07:39Speaker 1: fifth round. And I think that the thought for everybody
- 1:07:43Speaker 1: when they acquired him was well, if they can get
- 1:07:45Speaker 1: the twenty nineteen player, then then maybe they have som right.
- 1:07:50Speaker 1: But I think what ultimately ended up happening and what
- 1:07:54Speaker 1: has shown on the field is that that national championship
- 1:07:57Speaker 1: game against Davonte Smith showed you what he looked like. Again,
- 1:08:00Speaker 1: it's an NFL receiver and that is a non competitive
- 1:08:03Speaker 1: So that's a Speaking of college, we didn't really mention
- 1:08:07Speaker 1: any of the playoff games that happened over the weekend.
- 1:08:10Speaker 1: I don't want to talk about Paul didn't get a
- 1:08:12Speaker 1: good look at those ones. No, he was predisposing your
- 1:08:17Speaker 1: TV like I did. Yeah, that's only would do that
- 1:08:20Speaker 1: at someone's wedding. Friend, It's only a special kind of
- 1:08:23Speaker 1: person that would bring a TV to someone's wedding. I
- 1:08:25Speaker 1: only used it during the reception. It was my wedding. Ce.
- 1:08:31Speaker 1: Do you take this woman? So I saw the first
- 1:08:35Speaker 1: half of the Michigan TCU game and that's it. Yeah,
- 1:08:39Speaker 1: you know. So the good news is, you know, it
- 1:08:40Speaker 1: wasn't like they were two good games or anything that
- 1:08:42Speaker 1: I meant. Do you think that this Georgia quarterbacks any good? Yeah?
- 1:08:47Speaker 1: First away years old. Yeah, we don't have agesm here.
- 1:08:53Speaker 1: I mean that's fine, But I'm saying, like Jackson, I know,
- 1:08:57Speaker 1: what about the Michigan kid. We got a soft spot
- 1:08:59Speaker 1: from Michigan, you guys around here. No, the TCU quarterbacks
- 1:09:02Speaker 1: growing on me. A little bit. Don't let Barth hear
- 1:09:04Speaker 1: that though, because I've been bashing the kid all year.
- 1:09:06Speaker 1: But he's a gamer. Yeah no, I don't think so.
- 1:09:11Speaker 1: But probably he'll probably end up being a Day three
- 1:09:13Speaker 1: pick just because of the playoff performance. Someone would keep
- 1:09:16Speaker 1: him around as a third stringer because he's yeah it's scrappy. Yeah,
- 1:09:20Speaker 1: now they're receiver. Quinton Johnson's going to be a first
- 1:09:22Speaker 1: round pick. And I have tons of reservations about him
- 1:09:26Speaker 1: here just because he's not a route runner. He's not
- 1:09:28Speaker 1: somebody that is going to create a ton of separation.
- 1:09:31Speaker 1: But he runs away from people and he won't fit
- 1:09:34Speaker 1: in here. That's not it's not what we need. I
- 1:09:38Speaker 1: don't care for your tone. He's a he's a beast.
- 1:09:41Speaker 1: Uh Now, he's a good player, kind of Mike Evans.
- 1:09:43Speaker 1: I like that team. I like that team is uh.
- 1:09:47Speaker 1: I think they have more talent than they're given credit for.
- 1:09:49Speaker 1: I think they're like this scrap they get a shot.
- 1:09:51Speaker 1: They're a big twelve team. It's not like, yeah, you
- 1:09:54Speaker 1: know that they're you know, coming out of nowhere. They
- 1:09:57Speaker 1: they're they're pretty good. Somebody I was listen to somebody
- 1:10:00Speaker 1: on the radio, some old guy, and he's like, you know,
- 1:10:04Speaker 1: in the business, not not just a talking head, uh caller,
- 1:10:07Speaker 1: And he was like, you know, oh, TCU's definitely got
- 1:10:10Speaker 1: a shot. They're bigger and faster than Georgia. Definitely Georgia. Yeah,
- 1:10:14Speaker 1: I mean that's George's thing is they beat the hell
- 1:10:18Speaker 1: out of you. They might be faster. I think TCU
- 1:10:20Speaker 1: has a chance in a shootout against Georgia because I
- 1:10:23Speaker 1: think they have the better offense. But that Georgia defense,
- 1:10:28Speaker 1: their defensive line is like some NFL teams, if you
- 1:10:32Speaker 1: swapped down Georgia's defensive line, they'd probably improve. But it's
- 1:10:35Speaker 1: Jalen Carter is one of the best prospects on the
- 1:10:37Speaker 1: D line in a why it's amazing that they lost
- 1:10:39Speaker 1: like the entire defense, Yeah, and just turned it over
- 1:10:43Speaker 1: to a unit that's every bit as good. Yeah. Oh
- 1:10:46Speaker 1: and the Kirby's a great he's great on that side
- 1:10:48Speaker 1: of the ball too. Try to get him for a
- 1:10:50Speaker 1: coach's clinic. Is that coming back over those back last year? Yeah,
- 1:10:54Speaker 1: he's a Belichick guy. Yeah. Yeah, you get the Holy
- 1:10:57Speaker 1: Cross guys coming back. Oh he's there, then he's out.
- 1:10:59Speaker 1: Then he's a Belichick guy who Yeah, he'll ask Bill
- 1:11:02Speaker 1: holy Cross will be there. Well, to that point, a
- 1:11:07Speaker 1: lot of what Georgia runs, we run here. So when
- 1:11:11Speaker 1: Kirby goes to these coaching clinics and stuff and they
- 1:11:13Speaker 1: put it on YouTube, I always watched his presentations because
- 1:11:16Speaker 1: he's just breaking down the Patriots defense for everybody. So yeah,
- 1:11:20Speaker 1: Bill might might say no to that. All right. Five
- 1:11:25Speaker 1: hotline web radio at Patriots dot com is the email address.
- 1:11:28Speaker 1: Let's get to some of the emails. Excuse me at
- 1:11:33Speaker 1: web radio at Patrios dot com. Tyler writes in UM,
- 1:11:36Speaker 1: I was hoping you guys could explain this new forward
- 1:11:39Speaker 1: progress rule that stopped the fumble on the Dolphins first drive.
- 1:11:42Speaker 1: So he's pretty neat and would have been nice if
- 1:11:44Speaker 1: it existed. When Romandres fumbled against the Bengals' terrible call, yep,
- 1:11:49Speaker 1: terrible terrible call instant they were both It's very easy.
- 1:11:55Speaker 1: One was a bad non call and one was a
- 1:11:57Speaker 1: bad call. No, I think this one was greediously bad call.
- 1:12:01Speaker 1: Like this. It was terrible for he. Mostert was he
- 1:12:03Speaker 1: got hit and kind of broke the first tackle and
- 1:12:06Speaker 1: got hit a second time. Right, It was just it
- 1:12:08Speaker 1: was not forward progress, not even close and it's very
- 1:12:11Speaker 1: easy when you see a bad call to call it out.
- 1:12:14Speaker 1: You guys should take a lesson to that. Oh what ouch,
- 1:12:18Speaker 1: I don't know what he's talking about. It's a bad call,
- 1:12:21Speaker 1: this is what it was. Yeah, and it's not a
- 1:12:23Speaker 1: new rule, A terrible, terrible call like it was as
- 1:12:27Speaker 1: bad a call as you'll see all year, Like Sarah
- 1:12:32Speaker 1: Thomas not her shining moment, flipping coins on the sideline
- 1:12:36Speaker 1: on in and out of bounds. Um Sulman in the
- 1:12:40Speaker 1: Bay Area rites in. I watched the game live he's
- 1:12:42Speaker 1: talking about last night, of course, and it was very
- 1:12:45Speaker 1: scary to see an unfold. When I saw the look
- 1:12:48Speaker 1: on Diggs and Alan's face, I immediately knew this was dire.
- 1:12:51Speaker 1: This was prior to Joe Buck announcing CPR was administered.
- 1:12:54Speaker 1: I kept checking Twitter last night to see if there
- 1:12:57Speaker 1: are any updates. My thoughts are with Hamlin, his family
- 1:12:59Speaker 1: and teammates. Hard to turn the page and talk football,
- 1:13:02Speaker 1: So I'll leave my thoughts from Sunday's game off for now. Yeah,
- 1:13:05Speaker 1: well said, yep, it is. It's just a weird after
- 1:13:09Speaker 1: all the whole season and you feel like things are
- 1:13:11Speaker 1: kind of buildingto a climax. And now it's just I
- 1:13:13Speaker 1: feel like I'm in the you know, it's like appointment television.
- 1:13:16Speaker 1: Last and it really it looked like it was going
- 1:13:18Speaker 1: to be a good game. I started, you know, I
- 1:13:23Speaker 1: I started watching the game and I was, you know,
- 1:13:25Speaker 1: I was a little into it. And then you know, yeah,
- 1:13:30Speaker 1: you have two of the best teams in football playing
- 1:13:32Speaker 1: late in the year. It's almost like you're saying, it's
- 1:13:34Speaker 1: a shame that they're playing now, Like I'd rather see
- 1:13:37Speaker 1: this game in like three weeks and like the conference
- 1:13:39Speaker 1: championship or something like that. You might, well, I don't
- 1:13:42Speaker 1: know about that now, but I like, I have serious
- 1:13:45Speaker 1: reservations of what this rest of the season is going
- 1:13:48Speaker 1: to look like, period for everybody, but especially Buffalo, alex
- 1:13:52Speaker 1: and Raleigh. First of all, prayers out to tomorrow Hamlin
- 1:13:56Speaker 1: and his family. My question for you all is about
- 1:13:59Speaker 1: the health safety about players. There's been a lot of
- 1:14:02Speaker 1: talk about the safety of players the last few years
- 1:14:04Speaker 1: and how there are efforts to make the game safer. However,
- 1:14:07Speaker 1: given the amount of concussions, turf injuries, and what happened
- 1:14:09Speaker 1: last night, I don't recall a season where this was
- 1:14:13Speaker 1: this much of severe injuries around the league. In your opinion,
- 1:14:16Speaker 1: do you think the game is getting safer? What can
- 1:14:18Speaker 1: be done to protect the players and their families who
- 1:14:20Speaker 1: suffered from the aftermath of playing wild careers? Again, this
- 1:14:25Speaker 1: particular thing that happened last night, it's not a football injury,
- 1:14:29Speaker 1: and it's not those things that he's talking about are
- 1:14:32Speaker 1: actually all down. Yeah, just in terms of strict data
- 1:14:36Speaker 1: like concussions and whatnot, and the turf related injuries. You know,
- 1:14:42Speaker 1: maybe that's wrong. Maybe they're the NFL is propaganding us,
- 1:14:45Speaker 1: you know, like they want to do, but the numbers
- 1:14:48Speaker 1: say that they're down. Neil and New Brunswick has an
- 1:14:51Speaker 1: interesting I don't know the answer, he says. They were
- 1:14:53Speaker 1: saying one of the good things about Hamlin's injury was
- 1:14:56Speaker 1: the stadium was only two miles from a Level one
- 1:14:59Speaker 1: trauma center. Has that ever been a concern until at stadium,
- 1:15:02Speaker 1: which is sort of halfway between Boston Providence. That's interesting.
- 1:15:07Speaker 1: There was there used to be a hospital in Norwood.
- 1:15:08Speaker 1: I think it. I think it went under though. That's yeah.
- 1:15:11Speaker 1: I mean they've got the whole medical center here now,
- 1:15:13Speaker 1: but it's not Level one trauma. Yeah, there are hospitals
- 1:15:16Speaker 1: that are close and you're looking at a helicopter for Yeah,
- 1:15:19Speaker 1: how quick would a flight med flight be to mash General.
- 1:15:22Speaker 1: So Milford Milford Hospital is that level one. I don't
- 1:15:25Speaker 1: think any of those hospitals would have that kind of equipment.
- 1:15:30Speaker 1: They do have the helicopter, get a med flight in
- 1:15:35Speaker 1: five minutes. Yeah. That Cincinnati hospital though, that that's a
- 1:15:39Speaker 1: good place for him to be. That's a yeah, that's
- 1:15:40Speaker 1: one of the best hospitals in the country. Yeah. And
- 1:15:43Speaker 1: I did see, you know, doctor Chow for the former Childers,
- 1:15:48Speaker 1: who's really good at sort of diagnosing injuries off of
- 1:15:51Speaker 1: tv UM, and he did make a point, and I
- 1:15:54Speaker 1: heard a couple of doctors actually say similar things when
- 1:15:58Speaker 1: I was watching the news later. And you said, obviously
- 1:16:01Speaker 1: not an ideal situation, but other than an actual hospital
- 1:16:05Speaker 1: where he collapsed, it is probably as good a place
- 1:16:08Speaker 1: as he could have possibly collapsed. Yeah, So medical professionals
- 1:16:12Speaker 1: all over the price with all with the proper equipment,
- 1:16:14Speaker 1: properly trained, the people that were administering the CPR, you know,
- 1:16:19Speaker 1: you know they've done it before. That could argue that
- 1:16:21Speaker 1: even some hospitals, it's probably better to happen on the
- 1:16:24Speaker 1: field with some of the best of the best training
- 1:16:26Speaker 1: and medical stuff. Yep. So what did you guys think overall,
- 1:16:30Speaker 1: like of the coverage Like ESPN, I think they did
- 1:16:34Speaker 1: the best they could do. I mean, I thought kind
- 1:16:36Speaker 1: of felt I actually was impressed. I thought they did
- 1:16:38Speaker 1: a really good job. It's hard and I could nitpick
- 1:16:42Speaker 1: a million different things that pretty much every one of
- 1:16:44Speaker 1: them said. Yeah, but I thought they did a pretty
- 1:16:47Speaker 1: good job on it. I'm glad they stuck with it
- 1:16:49Speaker 1: rather than all right, let's go to USC Women's volley.
- 1:16:52Speaker 1: You know, I think you needed to because Pete, because
- 1:16:56Speaker 1: we're all like, we're living this with them, and yeah,
- 1:17:00Speaker 1: we you know, as as a viewer, you want them
- 1:17:02Speaker 1: to stick with it. You know, you you're like, Okay,
- 1:17:05Speaker 1: I need to. The commercials were killing me. Yeah, and
- 1:17:08Speaker 1: I know why they were doing the same. Was it
- 1:17:11Speaker 1: Susie Colber that came on then with with with Booger
- 1:17:13Speaker 1: McFarlane and want to I know, I know, I just
- 1:17:17Speaker 1: I thought Hanger and Ryan Clark were really, really good.
- 1:17:20Speaker 1: They were just like the raw emotion of a former player,
- 1:17:24Speaker 1: and then Ryan Clark having the unique perspective of his
- 1:17:28Speaker 1: condition that premitted him for being able to play in Denver. Well,
- 1:17:31Speaker 1: I think Ryan Clark was amazing, Like Booker though, like
- 1:17:35Speaker 1: I know you don't want to talk about it, but
- 1:17:38Speaker 1: I know, I know you. And I thought Susie Colber
- 1:17:40Speaker 1: did a good job of just slowing it down and
- 1:17:43Speaker 1: you know, understanding he wasn't comfortable jumping right into something
- 1:17:46Speaker 1: and you know, I mean, it's just it's a really
- 1:17:48Speaker 1: difficult situation. And Schefter was, you know, he was I
- 1:17:52Speaker 1: would like he put the phone away. He was, like
- 1:17:56Speaker 1: I could pick. He was neutralized though, like usually he's
- 1:17:59Speaker 1: the guy, okay, when you into Schefter, he's giving you
- 1:18:01Speaker 1: what he heard. There was nothing to be heard, like
- 1:18:03Speaker 1: he kept he kept looking at his phone, and I
- 1:18:05Speaker 1: was like, no, please, please do not do this, do
- 1:18:08Speaker 1: not deliver this news that we were all He's kept
- 1:18:12Speaker 1: looking at his phone. I know. Like I said, I
- 1:18:14Speaker 1: could nitpick something that everybody did or said throughout, but
- 1:18:18Speaker 1: I thought as a whole, I thought ESPN and those
- 1:18:22Speaker 1: guys that they're all sports, you know, and they all
- 1:18:24Speaker 1: said it like you know, we we we get into sports,
- 1:18:26Speaker 1: we're covered like Lisa Salters, Yeah, excellent, excellent, excellent, she
- 1:18:30Speaker 1: was the best well and excellent, you know, like she's
- 1:18:32Speaker 1: a good example of like when you witness something like that,
- 1:18:35Speaker 1: it rattles you, you know, and she she held it together,
- 1:18:38Speaker 1: but you could tell, like, but she was giving you
- 1:18:40Speaker 1: some really interesting stuff like under the stands and without
- 1:18:45Speaker 1: being intrusive, without making yourself part of the story, which
- 1:18:48Speaker 1: I thought some of the other reporters that sort of
- 1:18:52Speaker 1: came in the aftermath, I thought it was about them
- 1:18:54Speaker 1: a little bit. That Kali Harvey was one of them.
- 1:18:56Speaker 1: I thought, you know, I'm from Cincinnati. Yeah it was.
- 1:19:00Speaker 1: I don't care. I don't care where you live. And
- 1:19:02Speaker 1: I guess, you know, in today's age, you got to
- 1:19:05Speaker 1: give credit to the fans that were at the game,
- 1:19:08Speaker 1: you know, like they all like I never saw a
- 1:19:12Speaker 1: more quiet stadium, and then when it was announced the suspension,
- 1:19:16Speaker 1: like they just left fanshit up to the hospital. Yeah,
- 1:19:20Speaker 1: they said that it was so quiet. Actually, I was
- 1:19:22Speaker 1: texting with Tracks last night because he was at the
- 1:19:24Speaker 1: game and covering the from the Bengals, and he said
- 1:19:28Speaker 1: it was so quiet in the stadium when they were
- 1:19:31Speaker 1: taking him off in the ambulance that you could hear
- 1:19:34Speaker 1: the sirens going all the way to the hospital. Because
- 1:19:38Speaker 1: you could just hear a pin drop in the stadium
- 1:19:41Speaker 1: and I just look at it from God forbid. What
- 1:19:46Speaker 1: if it was one of the guys in this locker
- 1:19:48Speaker 1: room that I'm around all the time and covering it
- 1:19:52Speaker 1: as a beat reporter. I just don't know how eight
- 1:19:56Speaker 1: I wouldn't know how to capture something like that. But
- 1:19:59Speaker 1: b I don't even know how you you go about
- 1:20:01Speaker 1: doing your job right. So I really commend all these
- 1:20:05Speaker 1: people that were there that that did their job to
- 1:20:11Speaker 1: the best of their ability, because I know, if you
- 1:20:14Speaker 1: know a guy like to mar Hamlin, for a lot
- 1:20:17Speaker 1: of these reporters, you speak to him at least once
- 1:20:20Speaker 1: a week if not, if not more, and you see
- 1:20:22Speaker 1: him in the locker room all the time, and he's
- 1:20:24Speaker 1: walking around and and you maybe chat with him and
- 1:20:26Speaker 1: stuff like that on the side or whatever. And to
- 1:20:29Speaker 1: have this happen to somebody like that, personally, it's personal.
- 1:20:34Speaker 1: It is I'm not going to say that they're friends
- 1:20:36Speaker 1: of ours, but it's it's it's somebody they talk to something,
- 1:20:39Speaker 1: you know. I mean, even with how things went down
- 1:20:42Speaker 1: in Vegas with Jacobe, like I wanted to cry for
- 1:20:46Speaker 1: or Arizona rather whatever game it was, I thank you.
- 1:20:50Speaker 1: I felt so bad for him, even from something as
- 1:20:53Speaker 1: trivial as that. So to put it in life in
- 1:20:56Speaker 1: death situations, you don't you know, you feel for them,
- 1:21:00Speaker 1: Alexander writes in Let's hope for the best with the
- 1:21:03Speaker 1: Bill situation. Having witness CPR in person on a loved one,
- 1:21:06Speaker 1: it stayed in my mind for a long time. Regarding
- 1:21:09Speaker 1: the Patriots, are you guys getting nikkil Harry vibes from Thornton?
- 1:21:14Speaker 1: Sometimes the eye test is accurate, And I'm worried his lanky,
- 1:21:17Speaker 1: loose stumbling style is not going to be a good
- 1:21:20Speaker 1: thing going forward. I don't. I don't see. I mean,
- 1:21:23Speaker 1: I have definitely have concerns. I thought he had a
- 1:21:25Speaker 1: pretty nice little bounce back game last week. I don't
- 1:21:27Speaker 1: think he's in there. I mean, we can talk about
- 1:21:30Speaker 1: what his issues are. I think they're different issues than
- 1:21:32Speaker 1: what nikkil Harry had. I agree with that. Different issues, Yeah,
- 1:21:36Speaker 1: not like stiff you know, can't run. It's almost they
- 1:21:39Speaker 1: open separate. But Evan was on something about him early
- 1:21:44Speaker 1: in the season that I think is getting more and
- 1:21:46Speaker 1: more apparent. And that's just like his footwork on or
- 1:21:49Speaker 1: around the sidelines, Like I don't think that that was
- 1:21:52Speaker 1: an impossible catch in the end zone. I made it
- 1:21:55Speaker 1: look like I don't think it was an impossible catch
- 1:21:57Speaker 1: that he ended up getting credit for in the sidelines. Yeah,
- 1:22:00Speaker 1: I know that to me has been a problem with
- 1:22:03Speaker 1: multiple receivers on this team, I would say, or those
- 1:22:06Speaker 1: like drop it in the bucket throws like that's one
- 1:22:08Speaker 1: of those. Like he's got plenty of him to get
- 1:22:11Speaker 1: his feet in bounds plenty. I thought the throw deep
- 1:22:14Speaker 1: to him early in the game the twenty nine year
- 1:22:16Speaker 1: was a near perfect throw from mac Yeah, that he
- 1:22:19Speaker 1: made look ridiculously hard. And that one bugged me a
- 1:22:25Speaker 1: little bit because the one in the end zone, the
- 1:22:27Speaker 1: defender goes goes right across and so he just is
- 1:22:31Speaker 1: throwing his hands up and trying to catch it. But
- 1:22:34Speaker 1: Nelson Agilore had one a couple of weeks ago, the
- 1:22:37Speaker 1: same thing where he's drops in the bucket on him
- 1:22:40Speaker 1: and he just doesn't get his feed in bounds, you know.
- 1:22:42Speaker 1: And and that working of the sideline as a skill,
- 1:22:45Speaker 1: you know, that's something that they have to work pretty
- 1:22:46Speaker 1: good at. His Parker, and you would think that out
- 1:22:49Speaker 1: of that group, not that he's not an elite athlete,
- 1:22:52Speaker 1: because obviously he is. He was like the eleventh pick overall, Like,
- 1:22:56Speaker 1: but I wouldn't think of him in the same kind
- 1:22:59Speaker 1: of you know, fluid athlete kind of nature is. But
- 1:23:05Speaker 1: he's really good at those those sideline throws. Yeah, I
- 1:23:08Speaker 1: just think that is disagree no idea. It's just interesting
- 1:23:11Speaker 1: how guys are, you know, like you try to put
- 1:23:13Speaker 1: guys in a box and you don't really know. Like
- 1:23:15Speaker 1: it's just it's weird the the permutations between different players,
- 1:23:18Speaker 1: even though like nobody's I mean, the fact that he
- 1:23:22Speaker 1: got hurt coming out of camp and missed the first
- 1:23:24Speaker 1: month is sticking in my mind and I'm giving him
- 1:23:27Speaker 1: that out and I like that. I like that he's
- 1:23:29Speaker 1: playing a lot now, Like I like that they're at
- 1:23:31Speaker 1: least giving him the experience he's not producing. But I'm
- 1:23:34Speaker 1: I'm looking now as are we setting up for something
- 1:23:37Speaker 1: next year? He's getting some experience. At least it's not
- 1:23:39Speaker 1: lost year. Like he's the only guy guaranteed to be
- 1:23:42Speaker 1: back in that in that group. Yeah, I'll say this,
- 1:23:45Speaker 1: the quarterback likes throwing him the ball, and quarterbacks love
- 1:23:49Speaker 1: thrown got fast guys the ball in general. But I
- 1:23:52Speaker 1: do think that for mac he gives not that he's
- 1:23:55Speaker 1: the same type of player, but Mac play with a
- 1:23:57Speaker 1: lot of those finesse, speed type of receivers at Alabama,
- 1:24:01Speaker 1: and I think that he gives him some of those
- 1:24:03Speaker 1: those vibes. And I just would like to see Thornton
- 1:24:06Speaker 1: in particular, from a usage standpoint in this game, I
- 1:24:10Speaker 1: thought they did a better job of it. But when
- 1:24:12Speaker 1: you pit him against then the sideline, against the boundary
- 1:24:15Speaker 1: and just have him beat press coverage, that's not his game, right.
- 1:24:18Speaker 1: He gets smothered at the line of scrimmage, or he
- 1:24:20Speaker 1: gets pushed into the sideline where there's no throw to
- 1:24:22Speaker 1: be made by the quarterback. But in this game, you
- 1:24:25Speaker 1: know the big catch on the opening drive, they motioned
- 1:24:28Speaker 1: him at the snap, and then they line him up
- 1:24:30Speaker 1: tight to the formation and they give him that room
- 1:24:32Speaker 1: to run into the sideline, and then they hit him
- 1:24:34Speaker 1: up the seam, you know, running out of the slot,
- 1:24:36Speaker 1: like getting him away from physical coverage and bring him
- 1:24:39Speaker 1: in motion, playing him out of the slot. Like, I
- 1:24:41Speaker 1: think those are things that they can do to let
- 1:24:44Speaker 1: him use that speed because he's just a fast guy.
- 1:24:47Speaker 1: Like that's that's what's interesting about him, is that, like
- 1:24:49Speaker 1: they always seem to put a premium on blocking and
- 1:24:52Speaker 1: that was a big thing with Harry And it doesn't
- 1:24:53Speaker 1: seem like I'm not saying it's wrong that they should,
- 1:24:55Speaker 1: but it doesn't seem like you're ever gonna plan on
- 1:24:57Speaker 1: getting any blocking on it. Know, like it's just interesting,
- 1:25:01Speaker 1: Like I think I like the direction. But at the
- 1:25:04Speaker 1: same time, like you see him, like Evan said, against
- 1:25:06Speaker 1: Man and all of a sudden, the guy just goes
- 1:25:08Speaker 1: boom and Thornton's just, you know, like one hundred and
- 1:25:10Speaker 1: sixty pounds soaking wet. I think, I mean, I think
- 1:25:13Speaker 1: he's got to put on some weight and like you
- 1:25:15Speaker 1: guys said, rEFInd some of the footwork. But I mean,
- 1:25:17Speaker 1: I'll be interested to see him in camp next. Jearis
- 1:25:19Speaker 1: got to hold the red line a little bit better.
- 1:25:21Speaker 1: Like on the throw in the end zone when he
- 1:25:24Speaker 1: throws it, he kind of throws like a fade to
- 1:25:26Speaker 1: him in the end zone. He gets bumped off the
- 1:25:29Speaker 1: route and it looked like they may have gotten their
- 1:25:31Speaker 1: feet tangled a little bit. But I just those are
- 1:25:34Speaker 1: those are stiff wind Those are players that, like really
- 1:25:37Speaker 1: good vertical receivers. They find a way to keep themselves
- 1:25:41Speaker 1: moving right, like they don't get bumped off the Yeah,
- 1:25:45Speaker 1: and sometimes I see that a little bit with him
- 1:25:48Speaker 1: is that he's he fades on the route because he
- 1:25:51Speaker 1: gets bumped off of it. Jack in Stoughton a little
- 1:25:56Speaker 1: buy cell game for twenty twenty three. Ready, I could
- 1:25:59Speaker 1: use a game, buy or sell. Judean has thirteen sacks
- 1:26:03Speaker 1: in twenty twenty three and Ouche comes back to add
- 1:26:05Speaker 1: another ten sacks. Buy or sell that? Sure? I'd buy that? Yeah, yeah, sure,
- 1:26:10Speaker 1: why not? Why not buy or sell? Kendrick Bourne emerges
- 1:26:14Speaker 1: as a key part of the offense. It has consistent
- 1:26:16Speaker 1: productions similar to his first year with the Patriots in
- 1:26:19Speaker 1: twenty three. Can I interrupt this cell? Yeah? We have
- 1:26:25Speaker 1: an update. So Bill's Bengals is not going to be
- 1:26:28Speaker 1: played this week. The NFL has made no decision regarding
- 1:26:32Speaker 1: the possible resumption of the game at a later date.
- 1:26:34Speaker 1: The league has not made any changes the Week eighteen
- 1:26:36Speaker 1: regular season schedule, so it sounds like, as of right now,
- 1:26:40Speaker 1: if they find a way to fit Bills Bengals in,
- 1:26:42Speaker 1: it'll be later on. And I think as of right now,
- 1:26:46Speaker 1: the league is planning on paying Patriots Bills on Sunday.
- 1:26:49Speaker 1: And that's from the NFL. Okay, yeah, I think that is.
- 1:26:55Speaker 1: I think that's the only real voice of action. I
- 1:26:57Speaker 1: you know, this morning we were talking, someone had put
- 1:27:00Speaker 1: something out about the Bills and Bengals possibly playing within
- 1:27:04Speaker 1: forty eight hours. I thought there was a zero percent
- 1:27:07Speaker 1: chance of that. I just didn't think it made any sense.
- 1:27:12Speaker 1: First and foremost emotionally for both teams. Both teams were
- 1:27:15Speaker 1: on the field last night seeing that. Right, But then Wendy,
- 1:27:20Speaker 1: you like, how do you then, if you just want
- 1:27:22Speaker 1: to take the emotion and the humanity out of it,
- 1:27:25Speaker 1: how do you then ask them to play, say Wednesday
- 1:27:28Speaker 1: or Thursday and then again on Sunday. It can't be
- 1:27:31Speaker 1: concerned with player health and do that no period. Forget
- 1:27:34Speaker 1: about you know, Hamlin's injury. If you're worried about player safety,
- 1:27:41Speaker 1: you can't make them play like that. It's just it's
- 1:27:44Speaker 1: not right because that's health. Yeah, that's a health issue.
- 1:27:47Speaker 1: That's a mental right. This is this is not the
- 1:27:49Speaker 1: type of game. You can do that. And they still
- 1:27:52Speaker 1: have to decide. I have problems with the Thursday game,
- 1:27:55Speaker 1: you know, I mean, you know they're still gonna have
- 1:27:57Speaker 1: to decide when the Bengals Ravens game was though, that
- 1:27:59Speaker 1: was the one that was still TVD based on my
- 1:28:01Speaker 1: guess is that will be four twenty five. Now that
- 1:28:04Speaker 1: because I mean, you could go through all the different,
- 1:28:09Speaker 1: you know, permutations. I think that if Cincinnati had lost,
- 1:28:14Speaker 1: then that takes them out of that They don't need
- 1:28:16Speaker 1: They wouldn't have needed to be in that window with Buffalo,
- 1:28:19Speaker 1: do you know what I'm saying? Yeah, yeah, And I
- 1:28:21Speaker 1: think they probably wanted to be a four twenty five
- 1:28:23Speaker 1: game just to add a four twenty five game to
- 1:28:25Speaker 1: the mix. But who knows. But it's Sunday anyway. So
- 1:28:28Speaker 1: the Bills just tweeted to mar Hamlin spent last night
- 1:28:30Speaker 1: in the intensive care unit and remains there today in
- 1:28:33Speaker 1: critical condition at University of Cincinnati Medical Center. We are
- 1:28:36Speaker 1: grateful and thankful for the outpouring of support we have
- 1:28:39Speaker 1: received us far. So he's still in critical According to Buffalo,
- 1:28:43Speaker 1: all right, continuing with the buy or sell, Mac has
- 1:28:49Speaker 1: more than fifteen touchdowns but throws at least ten interceptions.
- 1:28:54Speaker 1: This is next the two for I will buy that.
- 1:28:57Speaker 1: I'll buy that. If he doesn't, he's kind of like,
- 1:29:00Speaker 1: he doesn't do that, don't make it. Don't even get
- 1:29:01Speaker 1: through all the all the way through the third year.
- 1:29:03Speaker 1: If he doesn't throw fifteen touchdowns right by yourself. Paul
- 1:29:07Speaker 1: and Fred get into several arguments about how the team
- 1:29:09Speaker 1: is actually better than what was their record, that their
- 1:29:12Speaker 1: record showed. Buying that's always a buy, and investing in
- 1:29:17Speaker 1: the stock. You're bullish on put it in the market.
- 1:29:21Speaker 1: Paul is just left. That was just gone. That was
- 1:29:23Speaker 1: a great head nod though, But it's gonna the fridge.
- 1:29:27Speaker 1: Um let's see Yemmy in Texas writes in last week,
- 1:29:32Speaker 1: your discussion was about Derek Carr coming to the Patriots.
- 1:29:36Speaker 1: But what if Josh McDaniels wants to trade for Mac Jones?
- 1:29:38Speaker 1: Would you do it? Trade Derek Carr? Not with that? Not?
- 1:29:42Speaker 1: I mean what they pick up his option and then
- 1:29:44Speaker 1: we take on a humongous Derek Carr contract and give
- 1:29:47Speaker 1: the I wouldn't do it. I don't understand. I mean
- 1:29:49Speaker 1: there was a time where I would, but not now
- 1:29:52Speaker 1: I don't done it right? Or what was he was? It?
- 1:29:56Speaker 1: Was he a preagent? No? I forget he says I would.
- 1:30:01Speaker 1: Yummy says, I just don't think he's good enough. I'm
- 1:30:03Speaker 1: also interested to see how he would do with more
- 1:30:05Speaker 1: weapons than a better OC. So he's not good enough,
- 1:30:08Speaker 1: but with better weapons than a good OC, he might
- 1:30:10Speaker 1: be good enough. I just resigned never happened. I just
- 1:30:14Speaker 1: pass on both. Sure, I just don't understand the Derek
- 1:30:17Speaker 1: Carr thing. Like, to me, Derek Carr and Mac Jones
- 1:30:20Speaker 1: are like the Spider Man, mean, where they're pointing at
- 1:30:22Speaker 1: each other, and now we're going to take the more
- 1:30:24Speaker 1: expensive older one. Yeah right, I just I think Derek
- 1:30:28Speaker 1: Carr's has more physical talent than Mac. Whenever I watch
- 1:30:33Speaker 1: Derek Carr, I just think of vanilla ice cream, which
- 1:30:35Speaker 1: just like this guy just doesn't add anything of any
- 1:30:38Speaker 1: substance to the offense, right, Like, it's just if it's there,
- 1:30:42Speaker 1: it's there. If it's not, it's not, and that in
- 1:30:44Speaker 1: the play is over, which is like exactly how I
- 1:30:45Speaker 1: feel about Max. So I just don't know, why would
- 1:30:48Speaker 1: you take the thirty million dollar one at what like
- 1:30:51Speaker 1: thirty two thirty three years old when you have the
- 1:30:53Speaker 1: twenty five dollars a year old one at four and
- 1:30:56Speaker 1: a half million. Andrew and Lam says, you know about
- 1:31:01Speaker 1: our earlier conversation about Mac, and you know who's two's
- 1:31:05Speaker 1: to blame and all that. He says, geez, I really
- 1:31:07Speaker 1: wish I could take as little accountability as Mac Jones
- 1:31:10Speaker 1: and Bill Belichick have been asked to take in their careers.
- 1:31:13Speaker 1: It's always another person's fault, and the media make sure
- 1:31:16Speaker 1: you know it too. They all have their gestures in
- 1:31:18Speaker 1: front of them, giving every reason in the book except
- 1:31:21Speaker 1: that they're not good enough. Well, I don't know about it.
- 1:31:24Speaker 1: Yeah not here, Yeah, I feel like to the show.
- 1:31:28Speaker 1: I got that one to one of my friends. Um,
- 1:31:32Speaker 1: let's see Shaddy in Houston. The reason most people are
- 1:31:36Speaker 1: not too happy with Mack is his lack of leadership.
- 1:31:39Speaker 1: It's been two full seasons we have not seen him
- 1:31:41Speaker 1: lead the team himself to victories, minus that one fluke
- 1:31:44Speaker 1: at Houston last year. He owes his defense for about
- 1:31:47Speaker 1: ninety percent of his wins, and never once has he
- 1:31:49Speaker 1: stepped up and returned the favor. All of this, to
- 1:31:53Speaker 1: add with the mediocre talent and lack of ability to
- 1:31:56Speaker 1: extend plays, means he'll never be a top ten quarterback. Well,
- 1:32:00Speaker 1: I mean, is is he talking about leadership or is
- 1:32:02Speaker 1: he talking about win a game at the end that
- 1:32:05Speaker 1: you were down? I mean he's talking about more, you know,
- 1:32:07Speaker 1: I think more of that, right, Like he wants to
- 1:32:09Speaker 1: see a comeback win, and I mean, I don't know
- 1:32:13Speaker 1: last week wasn't it, but it was in the vicinity
- 1:32:15Speaker 1: of it. I mean he also did get last week.
- 1:32:18Speaker 1: I mean he had he had a drive a touchdown
- 1:32:20Speaker 1: drive at when they were winning well, but they needed
- 1:32:23Speaker 1: it right ultimately, if you say so, I'm not trying to.
- 1:32:26Speaker 1: I'm pro defense here just for the record, but he
- 1:32:28Speaker 1: did give him the lead in Vegas just saying twenty
- 1:32:32Speaker 1: four seventeen. Did he? Yeah? I mean did he? I
- 1:32:37Speaker 1: thought I thought the game when he touchdown was a
- 1:32:39Speaker 1: forty yard run? How did it pick? How did we
- 1:32:42Speaker 1: set up the forty yard run with a forty yard pass?
- 1:32:44Speaker 1: So you know, is he did? Tom Brady never have
- 1:32:47Speaker 1: a running game like I mean, if if if all
- 1:32:49Speaker 1: we're doing for like this, like miracle comeback is like
- 1:32:53Speaker 1: the defense scores a touchdown and then I can and
- 1:32:56Speaker 1: I can score one touchdown and I can gotta come
- 1:32:58Speaker 1: from behind win. He has about twelve of those who
- 1:33:01Speaker 1: is credit if all you have to do is score
- 1:33:02Speaker 1: a touchdown every week, because that's all you ever do.
- 1:33:04Speaker 1: I just don't know. They don't. They do not score
- 1:33:08Speaker 1: points when he's on the field. That's why people are
- 1:33:12Speaker 1: questioning him. It's not that it's like, it's not that
- 1:33:15Speaker 1: hard to crack the code. It's not why people are
- 1:33:17Speaker 1: questioning him. Though. If that's why people were questioning him,
- 1:33:20Speaker 1: then I wouldn't have any problem with it. The reason
- 1:33:22Speaker 1: why people are questioning him is because he doesn't look
- 1:33:25Speaker 1: pretty playing football. You know why he doesn't look pretty
- 1:33:28Speaker 1: playing football because they don't move said football into the
- 1:33:32Speaker 1: end zone. No, it's the it's the Boomeris size and
- 1:33:35Speaker 1: take that. That's why. It's because his body label had.
- 1:33:39Speaker 1: I get it, and everybody's wrong. I'm not saying they
- 1:33:41Speaker 1: don't move the ball. I'm saying that if that was
- 1:33:44Speaker 1: everybody's if he didn't think the ball, people would put
- 1:33:46Speaker 1: up with the doucinis. They did it. Think it's both
- 1:33:51Speaker 1: for me, I don't like either part of that. David
- 1:33:55Speaker 1: who hate it more than most David and Bethlehem. Why
- 1:33:58Speaker 1: doesn't Mac get more time watching Stidham last week? It
- 1:34:01Speaker 1: seemed he had better blocking protection. Oh my god, Stidham
- 1:34:04Speaker 1: ran for his life in a whole game and at
- 1:34:06Speaker 1: least a half a second more for long routes to develop. Unbelievable.
- 1:34:10Speaker 1: Are badly run routes A big problem. As it seems
- 1:34:12Speaker 1: to me both of the interceptions were the result of pressure.
- 1:34:15Speaker 1: One got battered in his face and the other one
- 1:34:17Speaker 1: he got hit as he threw. He ran around like
- 1:34:19Speaker 1: he ran for the excuses. You know what I think
- 1:34:23Speaker 1: of Stidham zero point zero. I just go back to
- 1:34:26Speaker 1: twenty twenty and I see Cam Newton getting charted out
- 1:34:31Speaker 1: there every week after they're eliminated. I think it was
- 1:34:34Speaker 1: coaching negligence not to find out if the backup quarterback
- 1:34:37Speaker 1: that you drafted could play. I think, especially if that
- 1:34:40Speaker 1: was negligent, Yeah, because it wasn't like Cam was going
- 1:34:43Speaker 1: to be the long term answer. Yeah, that whole thing.
- 1:34:45Speaker 1: That's another one where hopefully someday we'll find out what
- 1:34:49Speaker 1: was going on that year with Cam because Bill was
- 1:34:52Speaker 1: so over the top protective of Cam. Cam was so
- 1:34:56Speaker 1: over the top protective of Belichick. Yeah, I mean I
- 1:34:59Speaker 1: don't think that's another That's another one that's not the
- 1:35:01Speaker 1: Da Vinci code. Yeah. Well, I mean, do you think
- 1:35:03Speaker 1: how much of it reflects on Stidham? I mean, how
- 1:35:05Speaker 1: Bill felt about Stidham the injury. I mean, maybe they
- 1:35:08Speaker 1: just didn't maybe they hated and that's why the Derek
- 1:35:11Speaker 1: carthing is so weird because McDaniels was had no issue.
- 1:35:14Speaker 1: Maybe McDaniels was like, can we just give him a chance.
- 1:35:16Speaker 1: Let's let's let's approach this for a second, because I
- 1:35:20Speaker 1: think it's really interesting. Now, maybe I'm a thousand percent wrong.
- 1:35:26Speaker 1: Maybe Stidham's good, Maybe he can play a little. How
- 1:35:31Speaker 1: would you feel if he ended up being say Jimmy
- 1:35:37Speaker 1: Garoppolo or Kirk Cousins for the next five years? Test
- 1:35:42Speaker 1: And don't you think that Bill should be like roundly
- 1:35:45Speaker 1: criticized for that? Because the audacity to go to a
- 1:35:49Speaker 1: wedding in the off season, that's supposedly why he fell
- 1:35:55Speaker 1: out of favor here. That's what I mean. Is there
- 1:35:58Speaker 1: something stupid? Does that sound like a sound reason to
- 1:36:00Speaker 1: give up on a draft pick? No, he's not tough enough,
- 1:36:04Speaker 1: he won't condum it at, he won't compete for the job. Hit,
- 1:36:09Speaker 1: he won't compete for the job, like, yeah, which is
- 1:36:13Speaker 1: gonna get rid of him? The trade compensation is what
- 1:36:15Speaker 1: I would second guess. More than anything, I think all
- 1:36:18Speaker 1: of it's worth second guessing. He was healthy enough to
- 1:36:20Speaker 1: be on the field in twenty twenty. You were eliminated
- 1:36:24Speaker 1: and you wouldn't play him. What if he did what
- 1:36:26Speaker 1: he did on Sunday for the last Now do you
- 1:36:29Speaker 1: go into the next season and like, do you pass
- 1:36:30Speaker 1: on mac Jones in the first round because of that?
- 1:36:33Speaker 1: Like something to think about. Well, maybe I don't have
- 1:36:36Speaker 1: to take a quarterback because if I don't really love
- 1:36:39Speaker 1: a quarterback, I have one that played three good games
- 1:36:42Speaker 1: for me. I guess I don't know. I just now
- 1:36:45Speaker 1: again and I are coming from the spot with Stidham,
- 1:36:48Speaker 1: we don't believe it. Let's let's let's play that through.
- 1:36:51Speaker 1: Let's just say that you can't. You kept Stidham and
- 1:36:53Speaker 1: you still drafted back. Everything else happened the same way,
- 1:36:56Speaker 1: but instead of bringing in Bailey Zappy, you're bringing in
- 1:36:59Speaker 1: Jared stidm Maybe now you have more of a tendency
- 1:37:02Speaker 1: to stick with Stidham, you know, I just don't know.
- 1:37:05Speaker 1: I think that if he came into that season in
- 1:37:09Speaker 1: twenty twenty and played well at the end of the year,
- 1:37:12Speaker 1: and then you put any stock into that one, and
- 1:37:14Speaker 1: I agree that they should have played him. I'm not saying,
- 1:37:16Speaker 1: but talked. If they if they put any stock into that,
- 1:37:21Speaker 1: then I think you're doing yourself a disservice honestly, because
- 1:37:24Speaker 1: we probably would have gone into that year with like
- 1:37:26Speaker 1: Stidham and maybe like Davis Mills on the roster. And
- 1:37:29Speaker 1: if you had Davis Mills, then I guess I can
- 1:37:31Speaker 1: talk myself into it, and at least you addressed it.
- 1:37:33Speaker 1: But I think you're just kicking the can down the
- 1:37:35Speaker 1: road of eventually taking a corner. More than likely, Yeah,
- 1:37:38Speaker 1: more than likely, Stidham at best would be a bridge
- 1:37:41Speaker 1: guy right now, I personally think that's what you have.
- 1:37:44Speaker 1: So again I'm going to open up the possibility that
- 1:37:48Speaker 1: I'm wrong and Stidham is better than that, and you
- 1:37:52Speaker 1: missed out on an opportunity for what, Like what did
- 1:37:55Speaker 1: you have to lose? Like you just decided you didn't
- 1:37:59Speaker 1: like it because you compete the way you think. I
- 1:38:01Speaker 1: go back to this strange relationship with Bill and Cam
- 1:38:04Speaker 1: like you know Bill, Like I don't know if it
- 1:38:08Speaker 1: was an agreement like while I'm here, I'm going to
- 1:38:10Speaker 1: be the starter or whatever, but Bill protected his ego
- 1:38:13Speaker 1: like I've never seen him do for any other player. Now, yeah,
- 1:38:16Speaker 1: if Stidham ends up being what you and I kind
- 1:38:18Speaker 1: of think he is, yeah, you know, maybe Mackish at best,
- 1:38:23Speaker 1: at best. Yeah, you know, maybe not even as good
- 1:38:25Speaker 1: as Mack. Then what's the difference? Who cares right now?
- 1:38:28Speaker 1: You know? But like, what if he's good? I just
- 1:38:30Speaker 1: think it signs a light too on Josh clearly like
- 1:38:34Speaker 1: Jared Stidham, right, he brought him to the Raiders. He
- 1:38:36Speaker 1: was willing him to give a shot. Now what was
- 1:38:38Speaker 1: what was his relationship like with Cam and what's Bill?
- 1:38:41Speaker 1: And I always think of that as I think that's
- 1:38:43Speaker 1: good business for a coach who goes somewhere. If you
- 1:38:46Speaker 1: have an opportunity to get like a backup quarterback that
- 1:38:49Speaker 1: knows your system, that's a that's that's good business. Like
- 1:38:52Speaker 1: you need to have a guy, right, you know, the quarterback.
- 1:38:55Speaker 1: The quarterback knows you a system. It's like a basketball
- 1:38:58Speaker 1: coach that has, you know, like a specific big system
- 1:39:00Speaker 1: and he gets his point guard, like, you know, I
- 1:39:03Speaker 1: know he can run my offense. Right, I think that
- 1:39:07Speaker 1: makes sense. But again I'm just saying, what if remote
- 1:39:10Speaker 1: possibility here? I know this rarely happens, But what if
- 1:39:12Speaker 1: I'm wrong and Stidham is really good, Like, no one's
- 1:39:17Speaker 1: gonna look at that any different way. He was on
- 1:39:19Speaker 1: the team for a couple of years and you wouldn't
- 1:39:21Speaker 1: give him a chance because Cam Newton had a play.
- 1:39:24Speaker 1: It's also in that camp, which was a bizarre camp
- 1:39:31Speaker 1: because it was the middle of COVID, But I was
- 1:39:33Speaker 1: lucky enough to watch most of those practice practices and
- 1:39:37Speaker 1: the best thrower of the football on that camp was Jared'stidham. Like,
- 1:39:39Speaker 1: and that's not like going out on a limb like.
- 1:39:41Speaker 1: Cam Newton didn't throw the ball well all year. So
- 1:39:43Speaker 1: the best thrower in camp was was Jared'stidham. But towards
- 1:39:48Speaker 1: the end of camp, especially once they got pads on
- 1:39:51Speaker 1: and they were really starting to you could see the
- 1:39:53Speaker 1: run game advantages to playing Cam. And that's sort of
- 1:39:56Speaker 1: when the offense you were like, Okay, I mean this
- 1:39:59Speaker 1: isn't gonna be good, but there's a method here right,
- 1:40:01Speaker 1: Like there there's the fact that they gave Cam a shot.
- 1:40:04Speaker 1: I don't have a problem, right. I was very excited
- 1:40:06Speaker 1: when they got Cam. Fred will tell you, oh yeah,
- 1:40:08Speaker 1: all like they just signed Cam Newton's Fred Fred called
- 1:40:11Speaker 1: me on a Sunday night in July and I was like,
- 1:40:13Speaker 1: you know, normally July, what am I doing. I'm on
- 1:40:16Speaker 1: the deck, I'm drinking. Yeah, I was jacked up. I'm
- 1:40:18Speaker 1: writing like analysis piece on Cam Newton coming and Kim
- 1:40:21Speaker 1: we never get guys like that gave him he was done.
- 1:40:25Speaker 1: We add at that point though, were we really like
- 1:40:27Speaker 1: in June being like I think it was like I
- 1:40:29Speaker 1: think it was the end of that was the end
- 1:40:30Speaker 1: of June, beginning of July. Yeah, but but we got
- 1:40:33Speaker 1: we got to like it was a late point in
- 1:40:35Speaker 1: the off season when the majority of team building were
- 1:40:37Speaker 1: done and we're really like it was its Jared Stidham
- 1:40:41Speaker 1: and then he went to a wedding, aren't we There's
- 1:40:43Speaker 1: a dark place. I do still watch the news that
- 1:40:47Speaker 1: was it that Eric was on vacation. That was the
- 1:40:49Speaker 1: origin of that quote. Eric was on vacation and we
- 1:40:53Speaker 1: had a big debate as to whether or not Eric
- 1:40:55Speaker 1: knew that we signed Cam Newton when he came back.
- 1:40:57Speaker 1: Was it going to be news to him. I remember
- 1:40:59Speaker 1: at the end of the camp too, a lot of
- 1:41:01Speaker 1: us that were there at those practices were having discussions
- 1:41:05Speaker 1: of like, could they college quarterback this and have Cam
- 1:41:08Speaker 1: like a Cam run package and j you know, not
- 1:41:12Speaker 1: the platoon that we saw against Chicago, but like a
- 1:41:15Speaker 1: situational you know, this is our passing quarterback. This is
- 1:41:17Speaker 1: our running quarterback, because it really it wasn't like Jared
- 1:41:21Speaker 1: Sidon was throwing the ball over the yard, Don't get
- 1:41:23Speaker 1: me wrong, but it was. He was definitely the better
- 1:41:25Speaker 1: passer out of the two spin Fresno Again, how many
- 1:41:28Speaker 1: of Max's so called big time throws boys are born
- 1:41:31Speaker 1: out of necessity or desperation as opposed to opportunities or
- 1:41:34Speaker 1: favorable matchups. I wonder if for Mac relative to Rogers,
- 1:41:38Speaker 1: those shots are more likely to come on third or
- 1:41:41Speaker 1: fourth in too long Well, his two big time throws
- 1:41:44Speaker 1: on Sunday were the one to Hunter Henry which was
- 1:41:47Speaker 1: third and six, and the one to Jakobe Myers, which
- 1:41:50Speaker 1: was third in medium as well. So I don't know
- 1:41:54Speaker 1: they weren't They weren't desperation on Sunday. I think there
- 1:41:57Speaker 1: have been some that he hit, like like Miami the
- 1:42:00Speaker 1: Game of the Year. We threw a bomb to Bourne
- 1:42:02Speaker 1: about you know they're bound a million points In the
- 1:42:04Speaker 1: four four against Cincinnati, they went along the sideline to
- 1:42:09Speaker 1: burn the seams, splitter to Bourne, the touchdown to Bourne,
- 1:42:12Speaker 1: Borne Born Kristen and Houston. How many of these quarterbacks
- 1:42:18Speaker 1: would you say performed as well? Or better than Mac
- 1:42:20Speaker 1: this week. Josh Dobbs, he did not play as well.
- 1:42:24Speaker 1: David Blow he played pretty well. Teddy Bridgewater off, No
- 1:42:30Speaker 1: Bridgewater well, No Gardner, Minshew terrible, Brock Purdy, he played
- 1:42:39Speaker 1: better than Matt Jarrett Stidham. He played better than Tyler Huntley. No.
- 1:42:43Speaker 1: I don't mean this to be as an indictment on
- 1:42:45Speaker 1: Mac per se. If anything, I'm frustrated that other teams
- 1:42:48Speaker 1: offenses can still resemble NFL offenses with backups when ours
- 1:42:52Speaker 1: looks like Foxboro High with a starter. I don't think
- 1:42:54Speaker 1: all of those offenses looked like NFL offenses that you
- 1:42:57Speaker 1: just rattled off. Tennessee, Philadelphia, Baltimore. Those didn't looked like
- 1:43:02Speaker 1: anything but NFL offenses. Miami didn't look like an NFL
- 1:43:07Speaker 1: offense with their backup quarterback. Yeah, chat Atlanta. I haven't
- 1:43:12Speaker 1: seen any updates on Jonathan Jones and his injury in
- 1:43:15Speaker 1: the Dolphins game, or Marcus Jones. And what about Jack Jones.
- 1:43:18Speaker 1: If Jonathan Jones can't go, could Jack Jones play? Jack
- 1:43:22Speaker 1: Jones is out for the year. I I know a
- 1:43:24Speaker 1: lot of people, including myself, were very high on Jack
- 1:43:27Speaker 1: Jones in general. Are we missing him? In the secondary
- 1:43:30Speaker 1: or was he good enough yet to be missed. We're
- 1:43:33Speaker 1: talking about Marcus Jones, Jack Jack Jones definitely missed him
- 1:43:36Speaker 1: last week. Yeah, I mean, I don't think he's played
- 1:43:39Speaker 1: very well, but I mean, you certainly miss missed the
- 1:43:42Speaker 1: depth and you had to take two guys off the
- 1:43:44Speaker 1: practice squad. So would'd rather have Jack Jones than helped
- 1:43:46Speaker 1: me out? Tyesyes, I was gonna go Davis, so I'm
- 1:43:51Speaker 1: glad I asked her help from the ground, Tayes. Actually,
- 1:43:55Speaker 1: I'm not gonna say he played like he's a good player,
- 1:43:57Speaker 1: because I have no idea he played twenty four snaps,
- 1:44:00Speaker 1: but he had a pretty good feel for what they
- 1:44:02Speaker 1: were doing defensively in a game where they did use
- 1:44:05Speaker 1: some game planned wrinkle calls. So I was impressed by
- 1:44:08Speaker 1: the fact that he absorbed as much information as he
- 1:44:10Speaker 1: did in a short period of time. So I want
- 1:44:12Speaker 1: to give him credit for that. Okay. Eric writes in
- 1:44:15Speaker 1: Long time Listener, First time Emailer. One thing I haven't
- 1:44:18Speaker 1: seen mentioned too much is how the Patriots would not
- 1:44:20Speaker 1: have made the playoffs last year if not for adding
- 1:44:23Speaker 1: the seventh seed. Maybe it's stupid to talk about hypothetical scenarios.
- 1:44:27Speaker 1: That's true. It was a sixth seed last year. Yeah,
- 1:44:31Speaker 1: since if you change one thing, it will change other things.
- 1:44:33Speaker 1: But how do you think your view of the Patriots
- 1:44:35Speaker 1: over the last couple of seasons would change if not
- 1:44:38Speaker 1: for expanding the playoffs. Yeah, I think the expanding of
- 1:44:42Speaker 1: the playoffs is an issue. But I think last year,
- 1:44:44Speaker 1: if I'm not mistaken, it was the Raiders were five,
- 1:44:49Speaker 1: the Patriots were six, and the Steelers was seven. Yeah,
- 1:44:54Speaker 1: I meant were six. I mean, I know people don't
- 1:44:57Speaker 1: like the seventh team. Now get ready for eight because
- 1:45:01Speaker 1: that's where they're going, right, Isn't it makes sense that
- 1:45:04Speaker 1: they're gonna have eight with no buzz or two with
- 1:45:06Speaker 1: no buzz buzz. Well, I think what was interesting was
- 1:45:09Speaker 1: that a lot of these games, even this past Sunday,
- 1:45:13Speaker 1: because if this was, you know, not it was sixteen playoff,
- 1:45:17Speaker 1: the AFC has already decided besides the AFC South. So
- 1:45:20Speaker 1: all these games that mattered this past week only mattered
- 1:45:23Speaker 1: because of the seventh seed. Right, So in that respect,
- 1:45:27Speaker 1: it did add at least some meaningful games at the
- 1:45:29Speaker 1: end of the year for more teams. That's exactly how
- 1:45:31Speaker 1: I wrote it in the notes It definitely worked in
- 1:45:34Speaker 1: terms of keeping more teams alive, but I think it's
- 1:45:37Speaker 1: hard to call it a success when they're all eight
- 1:45:39Speaker 1: and nine to nine and eight, Like, I don't think
- 1:45:41Speaker 1: those teams belong in the playoffs. And we'll see, Like
- 1:45:44Speaker 1: if the Patriots end up being the seventh seed and
- 1:45:46Speaker 1: we end up going to Cincinnati or Buffalo for and
- 1:45:49Speaker 1: they lose like they did last year, then I think
- 1:45:51Speaker 1: we can say, Okay, this is not competitive. If the
- 1:45:54Speaker 1: seventh seeds battle a little bit, then maybe we have
- 1:45:57Speaker 1: a different conversation. I don't know, Yeah, I mean I
- 1:46:00Speaker 1: would look at it as it's a one off. I mean,
- 1:46:02Speaker 1: anybody can upset somebody on a given week and it
- 1:46:04Speaker 1: could happen. Like I wouldn't completely dismiss I didn't dismiss
- 1:46:07Speaker 1: the Patriot's chances going into that playoff game last year, right,
- 1:46:11Speaker 1: I didn't say going into I'm not going to be
- 1:46:13Speaker 1: a fraud and say that. I went into that game
- 1:46:14Speaker 1: saying there's no chance. I didn't think they would win,
- 1:46:17Speaker 1: but you know, upsets happen. L from Wisconsin. I gotta
- 1:46:23Speaker 1: call out Evan here. Well, sure he's not sold on Mac,
- 1:46:27Speaker 1: but the way he talks about Mac. It's clear he's
- 1:46:29Speaker 1: one hundred percent of Mac guy. If it wasn't for
- 1:46:31Speaker 1: the system, Mac would be on his way to the
- 1:46:34Speaker 1: super Bowl. And everyone who doesn't like Mac is an
- 1:46:36Speaker 1: idiot who just doesn't like him and isn't watching the games.
- 1:46:39Speaker 1: I'll admit to one thing that what's the comportment? You
- 1:46:45Speaker 1: don't know what comportment is? How you handle yourself. I
- 1:46:48Speaker 1: knew what comportment was. I just wanted to make sure
- 1:46:51Speaker 1: that we got that in there. That again it is.
- 1:46:53Speaker 1: But again, a lot of people didn't like his comportment,
- 1:46:55Speaker 1: but they got they got past it. I just, okay,
- 1:47:01Speaker 1: I lay down my sword on this one. I can't.
- 1:47:03Speaker 1: I can't. I don't think you said that they go
- 1:47:05Speaker 1: into the super Bowl with if they had another systems. No,
- 1:47:08Speaker 1: I think that's a little bit of it. I said
- 1:47:10Speaker 1: that I would like to see Mac in a better
- 1:47:11Speaker 1: system so I can decide whether or not I truly
- 1:47:15Speaker 1: think he's the guy, because right now I think that
- 1:47:17Speaker 1: there's a lot of broken things going on around him
- 1:47:19Speaker 1: that are making it difficult for me to actually make
- 1:47:21Speaker 1: a full evaluation. And I'm not going to just evaluate
- 1:47:24Speaker 1: him on his rookie season because he was a rookie.
- 1:47:26Speaker 1: So in year three, if he's got Bill O'Brien as
- 1:47:28Speaker 1: his offensive coordinator and he looks like he did this year,
- 1:47:33Speaker 1: then we're all going to be a team. Let's let's
- 1:47:35Speaker 1: find something better. Let's move on. So let's um, what
- 1:47:37Speaker 1: if what if it's not Bill O'Brien, what if it's
- 1:47:40Speaker 1: cliss No, what if it stays the same? Does he
- 1:47:44Speaker 1: get another pass? If it stays the same, does a
- 1:47:49Speaker 1: personnel stay the same or do they upgrade the personnel? Well,
- 1:47:54Speaker 1: they're not going to have the same players, but right,
- 1:47:56Speaker 1: And I'll leave that to your interpretation as to whether
- 1:47:58Speaker 1: or not's an upgrade, because I could I'm sure I
- 1:48:01Speaker 1: could get a Paul fred argument like, no, no, he's
- 1:48:04Speaker 1: better than him. No, No, he's better than that. Now No,
- 1:48:06Speaker 1: not Myers is better. No, Like they're gonna have different receivers.
- 1:48:10Speaker 1: But if it's the same structure and Matt Patricia's the
- 1:48:13Speaker 1: offensive coordinator and clearly Bill expects him to be better,
- 1:48:16Speaker 1: it's so hard to judge because you're taking a quarterback
- 1:48:19Speaker 1: who's never done in the NFL and an OC who's
- 1:48:23Speaker 1: never done it in the NFL, and you're trying to
- 1:48:25Speaker 1: make a judgment and it's like, oh, you know, never
- 1:48:28Speaker 1: done it. Huh, So his whole rookie year doesn't count
- 1:48:31Speaker 1: at all? Not really, I mean, okay, yeah, I would
- 1:48:34Speaker 1: say in your hypothetical way, like professors, Lord help us
- 1:48:39Speaker 1: all if that ends up being the case. But in
- 1:48:41Speaker 1: that hypothetical I would say, next year, I don't necessarily
- 1:48:45Speaker 1: need to see him like the World on Fire with
- 1:48:47Speaker 1: Matt Patricia, but I would like to see I think
- 1:48:53Speaker 1: this year with one of his biggest issues that he's
- 1:48:55Speaker 1: had is that right out of the gate, he allowed
- 1:48:59Speaker 1: this become bigger than it needed to be. That's my problem, right,
- 1:49:03Speaker 1: that's they never even tried Next year, if it's the
- 1:49:06Speaker 1: same thing and they say, listen, Mac, like this is
- 1:49:08Speaker 1: what we're doing. Get on board or don't get on board,
- 1:49:11Speaker 1: and that's a tipping. I give him one year to
- 1:49:13Speaker 1: be frustrated with it. Next year, I think that you
- 1:49:16Speaker 1: have to get to the point. And I would say
- 1:49:17Speaker 1: that it's mainly because contractually they have to make a
- 1:49:20Speaker 1: decision on his fifth year option and they have to
- 1:49:23Speaker 1: sort of make a decision on his future. So this
- 1:49:26Speaker 1: is what we're If that's what we're left with, then yeah,
- 1:49:28Speaker 1: then year three is still to me a tipping point,
- 1:49:30Speaker 1: but I would ultimately put the blame at the top
- 1:49:34Speaker 1: that they put him into situation to fail. What's more
- 1:49:37Speaker 1: important to do next year in order to make a judgment,
- 1:49:40Speaker 1: change the OC or make the old line a lot better?
- 1:49:45Speaker 1: Why not both? But what's more important they'll see? I'd
- 1:49:49Speaker 1: say the OC as well. Really yeah, because I think
- 1:49:52Speaker 1: if on the offensive line question, they've gotten away with
- 1:49:57Speaker 1: I don't want to call it lesser talent because I
- 1:49:58Speaker 1: hate that argument, but they've gotten away with like guys
- 1:50:01Speaker 1: that are not first round picks on the line and
- 1:50:04Speaker 1: Dante just coached them up right, So I think that
- 1:50:07Speaker 1: there's an element with the line, especially that if you
- 1:50:10Speaker 1: just got five guys that are playing on a string,
- 1:50:12Speaker 1: then they can block a lot better than you know,
- 1:50:15Speaker 1: maybe their draft status. When you do your things on
- 1:50:18Speaker 1: the big time throws, where did those come from? What
- 1:50:22Speaker 1: do you mean does and how do they How does
- 1:50:25Speaker 1: PF have the Patriots offensive line ranked and comparative to
- 1:50:28Speaker 1: the league? Um? Number one? I believe it's five. So
- 1:50:32Speaker 1: I've had this argument with the guy that writes that
- 1:50:34Speaker 1: article because he's not watching the Patriots play, and I, uh,
- 1:50:40Speaker 1: what watch. I'm very consistent. Yeah, so I don't those
- 1:50:46Speaker 1: articles are are they have like preseason rankings, and it's
- 1:50:51Speaker 1: like very difficult to move. I know what you're saying
- 1:50:54Speaker 1: up and down exactly what you're saying is happening. I
- 1:50:57Speaker 1: don't know where, Paul, Yeah, I don't know where they
- 1:51:01Speaker 1: have them exactly, but I know where I have them,
- 1:51:04Speaker 1: and that is that. I don't think. I don't think
- 1:51:06Speaker 1: the line's been great. I don't think line play in
- 1:51:08Speaker 1: general is great around the league. That's fair. I think,
- 1:51:11Speaker 1: you know, they're a handful of teams that have really
- 1:51:13Speaker 1: good offensive lines. I think the Eagles are one. I
- 1:51:16Speaker 1: think we saw a couple in games with the Patriots
- 1:51:19Speaker 1: one and blowouts. Cleveland and Detroit. I think both have
- 1:51:22Speaker 1: pretty good offensive lines. But I see a lot of
- 1:51:25Speaker 1: teams with terrible offensive Dallas is I mean Tyrant Smith's
- 1:51:28Speaker 1: back and they moved him to write tackle, which was
- 1:51:31Speaker 1: a lot of injury. Not to go down this rabbit hole,
- 1:51:33Speaker 1: but the Cowboys drafted Tyler Smith out of Tulsa in
- 1:51:36Speaker 1: the first round and he's played guard and tackle for
- 1:51:39Speaker 1: them this year and he's a stud. Yeah, And the
- 1:51:41Speaker 1: Patriots were on the clock in the first round and
- 1:51:45Speaker 1: traded out of the pick to move down to draft
- 1:51:48Speaker 1: Cole Strange. And now Tyler Smith might be a rookie
- 1:51:50Speaker 1: pro bowler. And I know earlier in the season. I
- 1:51:52Speaker 1: don't know what he's had for because I don't care.
- 1:51:55Speaker 1: But Zion Johnson played reasonably well for a while too,
- 1:51:59Speaker 1: especially when Slater went out. Yeah for the Chargers. Yeah.
- 1:52:02Speaker 1: Now he was drafted before, right, so they would have
- 1:52:04Speaker 1: had to trade up to get him. Yeah, but Tyler
- 1:52:07Speaker 1: instead of trading back. Right, if you're targeting a guard,
- 1:52:10Speaker 1: don't you say that doesn't matter? Whatever guard we get
- 1:52:12Speaker 1: will take right they I mean Tyler Smith was staring
- 1:52:17Speaker 1: at him in the face, right, like he was on
- 1:52:18Speaker 1: the board while they were on the clock. Yeah, um,
- 1:52:23Speaker 1: getting ready to take a tackle next Wan in Mexico.
- 1:52:26Speaker 1: The Ohio state guy's name Paris Johnson. Yeah. Yeah. My
- 1:52:31Speaker 1: thoughts and prayers for them, for Hamlin and his family.
- 1:52:34Speaker 1: Hope he can pull through before this uncertainty in the
- 1:52:37Speaker 1: NFL season, When they released the time slots for Week
- 1:52:40Speaker 1: eighteen games, did they try to make it the worst
- 1:52:42Speaker 1: possible scenario? How do you put the Lions and Packers
- 1:52:45Speaker 1: in Sunday Night football where it is possible one of
- 1:52:48Speaker 1: them is eliminated already. I don't even I don't know
- 1:52:51Speaker 1: if that's true. One I don't think. I think that's
- 1:52:53Speaker 1: a oh Detroit to get eliminated if Seattle wins. Oh
- 1:52:57Speaker 1: they could, Yeah, Okay, they just want a Rodgerson primetime.
- 1:53:01Speaker 1: But it is I think this, the whole Saturday thing
- 1:53:05Speaker 1: has introduced a layer that they didn't want. They wanted
- 1:53:09Speaker 1: to really, I agree with the emailer's point because he
- 1:53:12Speaker 1: conveniently leaves out the part that benefited the Patriots with that.
- 1:53:15Speaker 1: But I thought the whole goal of this sort of
- 1:53:21Speaker 1: shift to division games late in the year for everybody,
- 1:53:25Speaker 1: was to ensure the competitive nature of these games and
- 1:53:28Speaker 1: try to eliminate some teams not having anything to play
- 1:53:32Speaker 1: for and not knowing your fate before you took the field.
- 1:53:37Speaker 1: And yet here we are with Kansas City. Now, the
- 1:53:40Speaker 1: whole thing that happened last night throws a monkey wrench
- 1:53:42Speaker 1: in this. But if if everything played out, Kansas City
- 1:53:47Speaker 1: would have had If Buffalo played last night and lost,
- 1:53:51Speaker 1: Kansas City could play Saturday and clinch the number one seed.
- 1:53:55Speaker 1: So Buffalo would have had no number one seed to
- 1:53:57Speaker 1: play for. Now You could argue they'd still play hard
- 1:54:00Speaker 1: because they want to play two or three or whatever,
- 1:54:02Speaker 1: But that's up to Sean McDermott. Now he's not gonna
- 1:54:05Speaker 1: dump when the when a win is a buy in
- 1:54:08Speaker 1: a loss is not a buy. No one dumps in
- 1:54:10Speaker 1: that situation. So the NFL and the email is right Detroit.
- 1:54:15Speaker 1: If Seattle wins, Detroit's out because Detroit needs to beat
- 1:54:19Speaker 1: Green Bay and have Seattle lose. So what about what
- 1:54:23Speaker 1: about just Packers needing the game to get in? Yeah?
- 1:54:27Speaker 1: I know, but if the other team's not playing hard,
- 1:54:29Speaker 1: that's what they're looking to avoid. So all you had
- 1:54:32Speaker 1: to do was have the Packers play Detroit on Saturday
- 1:54:37Speaker 1: night and have the Tennessee Jacksonville game, which is Alton
- 1:54:41Speaker 1: no matter what that's for the AFC side, right, I
- 1:54:44Speaker 1: can't believe that's not the same, which like it's not
- 1:54:46Speaker 1: that hard, that makes sense. I just don't understand. Why
- 1:54:51Speaker 1: is the AFC South Championship not the Sunday night game,
- 1:54:53Speaker 1: Like that's how it's always been, right, Like right, I remember,
- 1:54:57Speaker 1: you know the NFC East used to have game like
- 1:55:00Speaker 1: that where both teams were not very like middle teams.
- 1:55:04Speaker 1: Winner goes the loser goes right. It was like Giants
- 1:55:06Speaker 1: Cowboys or Giants Eagles or something like that. And they
- 1:55:09Speaker 1: used to play it on Sunday night, is the NFC
- 1:55:11Speaker 1: East Championship game. And it's almost like they looked at
- 1:55:14Speaker 1: it and they said, well, Jacksonville, if you know, if
- 1:55:17Speaker 1: Miami in New England and Pittsburgh goll lose and Jet,
- 1:55:20Speaker 1: the game doesn't mean anything to Jacksonville because they're in
- 1:55:23Speaker 1: either way. But there's still game. They're still yeah, of
- 1:55:25Speaker 1: course they're still gonna try to win the game, Yeah,
- 1:55:28Speaker 1: because they want to win the division. Like, I don't
- 1:55:31Speaker 1: think that was a hard fix. You could have You
- 1:55:33Speaker 1: could have made it so both of those games were
- 1:55:34Speaker 1: competitive for both teams just by flip flop in twenty
- 1:55:38Speaker 1: four hours and they didn't do it. All right, that's
- 1:55:43Speaker 1: gonna be it for this edition of Patriots Unfiltered. We'll
- 1:55:46Speaker 1: be back tomorrow at noon. Hopefully we'll have some good
- 1:55:49Speaker 1: news to share um about Hamlin's condition, but you know,
- 1:55:55Speaker 1: we'll wait and see. But the news right now that
- 1:55:57Speaker 1: we can't give you is that they will not be
- 1:55:59Speaker 1: playing that game this week anyway. And you know, if
- 1:56:04Speaker 1: there's no word about our game on Sunday, but they
- 1:56:07Speaker 1: will not be playing the Bengals Bills game this week. Well,
- 1:56:11Speaker 1: let's say the week eighteen. What did it say about
- 1:56:13Speaker 1: it unaffected? Yeah right now, yeah, it's unaffected Sunday at
