Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: The featured documentary about Tom Phillips is going to be
- 0:02Speaker 1: on Netflix. Is anyone surprised to hear this? The cops
- 0:05Speaker 1: gave the film crew access. Some journals aren't happy. James
- 0:08Speaker 1: Hollings is massive university journalism program lead and former news
- 0:11Speaker 1: editor with me this morning. James, Good morning, Good.
- 0:14Speaker 2: Morning, Ryan.
- 0:14Speaker 1: How are you great to talk to you? Very well?
- 0:16Speaker 1: Thank you. So the new bit in the story is
- 0:19Speaker 1: the Netflix link? Does that actually change much? Do you think?
- 0:24Speaker 2: I think it does actually, And I think there's some
- 0:27Speaker 2: concerns that we should have really because we have I mean,
- 0:33Speaker 2: I think the people that are making the documentary they're
- 0:37Speaker 2: acting in their own sort of interests, which is fine,
- 0:39Speaker 2: and they've applied and they've been given permission by the
- 0:42Speaker 2: police everything else, and they've taken a punt and they've
- 0:45Speaker 2: they've and they've done very well out of it. But
- 0:49Speaker 2: the problem is that it's going to be broadcast overseas
- 0:55Speaker 2: and this as I guess most journalists known, most of
- 0:59Speaker 2: the genders probably know that an awful lot of legal
- 1:02Speaker 2: tangle around this case and a lot of suppressions around
- 1:05Speaker 2: it because of the way that it involves children and
- 1:10Speaker 2: anything else. And we don't really know how that's going
- 1:13Speaker 2: to play out overseas. I mean, is the he's in
- 1:16Speaker 2: a law going to be respected in the way that
- 1:18Speaker 2: it's it's made and as it's broadcast. So for example,
- 1:23Speaker 2: there's a whole other things that using on journalist weren't
- 1:26Speaker 2: able to talk about and say about this case because
- 1:29Speaker 2: of the legal suppression around the family and everything else.
- 1:34Speaker 2: Does that going to apply to an overseas streamer?
- 1:41Speaker 1: Do you think, James, do you think they could make
- 1:43Speaker 1: two versions of it, one that we get and one
- 1:45Speaker 1: that the rest of the world gets, or are they
- 1:47Speaker 1: doing one version that abides by our rules? And you're
- 1:50Speaker 1: worried about how other media might react overseas and what
- 1:53Speaker 1: digging they might do.
- 1:56Speaker 2: Well, we don't know do It hasn't been spelled out,
- 2:00Speaker 2: nothing's been said by the police about that about how
- 2:02Speaker 2: they intend to sort of safeguard and make sure it
- 2:07Speaker 2: conforms with New Zealand law. So that's one issue. The
- 2:12Speaker 2: other issue is that it's a really poor, poor decision
- 2:17Speaker 2: by police to do this, I think, and you can
- 2:19Speaker 2: see why that they're so embarrassed and that to sit
- 2:21Speaker 2: there thoughts so hard not to have it come out
- 2:25Speaker 2: that it was Netflix that's doing it because it's a
- 2:27Speaker 2: poor lot and it's a bad decision by police to
- 2:31Speaker 2: completely sideline all the New Zealand's journalists and broadcasters in
- 2:36Speaker 2: favor of an overseas commercial entity, basically sell off what
- 2:43Speaker 2: is really privileged public information to an overseas broadcaster. Will
- 2:51Speaker 2: not sell it to give it away.
- 2:52Speaker 1: In fact, what information are you talking about. You're talking
- 2:55Speaker 1: about the access that the film crew got, because yes,
- 2:58Speaker 1: do we know that New Zealand media are stone we'd declined.
- 3:03Speaker 2: Well, I don't know that, but it'll be surprised they hadn't.
- 3:06Speaker 1: Nast Okay, all right, Dames, appreciate your trying this morning.
- 3:10Speaker 1: Thank you. James Hollings, Mass University journalism program lead and
- 3:13Speaker 1: former news editor.
