- 0:00Speaker 1: Back with Gino and Mike Kavanaugh were live at Kathery
- 0:02Speaker 1: or we'll doing after show with the folks here coming
- 0:04Speaker 1: up at seven on the radio, it's Dan Hurley with
- 0:08Speaker 1: Mike Crispino and Alex Caraban. That's coming up at seven.
- 0:12Speaker 1: You probably have more interaction or would with Alex than
- 0:16Speaker 1: say Mike would. But you had a nice analogy today
- 0:19Speaker 1: about Joey muld Downey Alex Caraban kind of in that
- 0:21Speaker 1: same boat. But what kind of interactions have you had
- 0:24Speaker 1: with ak in his time here at Yukon? Gino? Start
- 0:26Speaker 1: with you.
- 0:27Speaker 2: Now we see him a lot, obviously, we see him
- 0:29Speaker 2: a lot in the in the building, in the weight room,
- 0:37Speaker 2: in the food room. So he's he's been here forever.
- 0:43Speaker 2: I mean like a lot of times.
- 0:45Speaker 1: Now I didn't talk much got here.
- 0:47Speaker 2: No, a lot of times. You if you get a
- 0:51Speaker 2: really good player here that comes and plays man's basketball,
- 0:54Speaker 2: they're not around here really really long. You know, Castle
- 0:58Speaker 2: was here, what one you here? Donovan Klingon was here
- 1:02Speaker 2: two years, I want to say, and then you get
- 1:06Speaker 2: some you know, transfer guys that maybe come in for
- 1:08Speaker 2: a year. But Alex, you know, he's been here the
- 1:14Speaker 2: whole four years. So you kind of seen him grow
- 1:17Speaker 2: from this gangly kid, you know that came in that
- 1:21Speaker 2: everybody had high hopes for, and you know, two national
- 1:25Speaker 2: championships and here he is now and he's the nicest
- 1:31Speaker 2: kid in the world, really smart, great student, you know.
- 1:35Speaker 2: But cav was talking about going to see a kid.
- 1:39Speaker 2: I remember we were recruiting, and you had a certain
- 1:44Speaker 2: period of time when you could recruit, and it was
- 1:46Speaker 2: the month of August, so it was August. How many
- 1:50Speaker 2: days in August thirty one, So it was August thirty first,
- 1:56Speaker 2: and we were in Washington, d C. Was at a
- 1:59Speaker 2: tournament and this guy that I knew said, Hey, you
- 2:03Speaker 2: want to go get something neat And I said sure,
- 2:05Speaker 2: and he said, well, let's stop at this playground because
- 2:07Speaker 2: I want to see this kid play in this Summer
- 2:10Speaker 2: League game. So we went down there and one of
- 2:13Speaker 2: the kids that we were recruiting was playing in the game,
- 2:16Speaker 2: and she was probably top five recruits in the country
- 2:19Speaker 2: or whatever she was. So I'm watching the game and
- 2:22Speaker 2: I see this kid run up and down the floor.
- 2:25Speaker 2: And I'm being generous by saying she was running up
- 2:29Speaker 2: and down the floor. She was just getting up and
- 2:31Speaker 2: down the floor. You know. And and so I said
- 2:34Speaker 2: to this little kid, I said, hey, who's really good
- 2:42Speaker 2: out there? He points to this kid and I go, well,
- 2:47Speaker 2: that's not the kid that everybody's looking at. That kid
- 2:49Speaker 2: right there is everybody's looking at. It goes yeah, I said,
- 2:53Speaker 2: but that kid. I said, who's that kid? And he says,
- 2:57Speaker 2: I don't know, I've never seen her before. I said, well,
- 3:00Speaker 2: you got five minutes to come back with her name,
- 3:04Speaker 2: what school she goes to, and all the other stuff.
- 3:06Speaker 2: Kid was like eleven or something, you know. So he
- 3:10Speaker 2: comes back eleven year old. Nice. Yeah, yeah, I could
- 3:13Speaker 2: have been a little brother. He comes back and he
- 3:15Speaker 2: gives me all the information. And first time I saw
- 3:20Speaker 2: her it was Jamelle Elliott, you know. And somebody said,
- 3:24Speaker 2: what are you going to do with her? She's not
- 3:26Speaker 2: a guard I said, I know she's not, because well
- 3:28Speaker 2: she's not. She's not big and she's five ten, five eleven.
- 3:31Speaker 2: She's not, you know, big enough. I said, I know,
- 3:33Speaker 2: I know. He says, well, what are you going to
- 3:35Speaker 2: do with her? I said, I'm sure I'll find something
- 3:38Speaker 2: that I can do with her.
- 3:38Speaker 1: Yeah. A thousand points thousand rebounds later.
- 3:41Speaker 2: Yeah, other than Rebecca, she was the first kid to
- 3:44Speaker 2: get a thousand points in a thousand rebounds, because you
- 3:47Speaker 2: can't and I think you said this, you can't underestimate
- 3:50Speaker 2: someone's toughness and will to win and competitive spirit, you know.
- 3:56Speaker 2: And I think sometimes people get seduced by, you know,
- 4:00Speaker 2: athletic ability and talent and oh my god, look at
- 4:03Speaker 2: that kid. Look how quick, Look how fast, look how
- 4:06Speaker 2: you know all these other things, and they forget to
- 4:09Speaker 2: look past that and say, wow, you know what's underneath there? Yeah,
- 4:16Speaker 2: you know, because that's and at the end of the day,
- 4:19Speaker 2: that's what's going to make you who you are, right,
- 4:21Speaker 2: I think, all.
- 4:22Speaker 1: Right, we'll take one last break here, get towards the
- 4:24Speaker 1: top of the hour, and we'll stay on time. It's
- 4:25Speaker 1: the UKON Women's Basketball Coaches Show. GINO Mike Kavanaugh back
- 4:28Speaker 1: in a minute here Onlearfield
