- 0:04This is Living Waters of Grace, the teaching ministry of Lewis
- 0:08Harold, assistant pastor of Calvary Chapel of Westmoreland
- 0:12County in Greensburg, PA. Now here's Pastor Lewis as he
- 0:16continues teaching through God's Word.
- 0:37Paul says I am a bond slave. In other words, he says I am
- 0:40willingly submitting my will to God.
- 0:44I am a slave of God. That should be all of our
- 0:47testimonies that we are a bond servant to God.
- 0:51We are giving our will to willingly submitting our will to
- 0:56God, Not out of, you know, not out of coercion or because we're
- 1:00being forced to, but because we desire to please God.
- 1:04So we live for him. Most of the time when we think
- 1:08of slavery, we think of those who were forced into servitude.
- 1:12But that's not the only form of slavery that has existed in the
- 1:15world. For some, slavery meant to
- 1:18chance at a better life. No one forced them to become
- 1:21slaves, but because of the opportunity to live a better
- 1:25life and work for their own needs, they would willingly
- 1:28pledge themselves to their masters.
- 1:31In Pastor Lewis's message today, he encourages you to willingly
- 1:34pledge your life to God, knowing he offers you everlasting life
- 1:39now. Here's Pastor Lewis in Titus
- 1:41chapter one with today's edition of Living Waters of Grace.
- 1:46As Paul wrote these books, First and Second Timothy, First
- 1:50Timothy and Titus was actually the first 2.
- 1:52They were written after his first imprisonment.
- 1:55And then, of course, Second Timothy was written while he was
- 1:59in his second imprisonment waiting to be executed.
- 2:03But we understand that as he wrote these epistles or these
- 2:07letters, they are for the purpose of pastoral direction,
- 2:12but not as they're not just for pastoral direction.
- 2:14I mean, we could look at that and we can say, OK, what's OK
- 2:17for us who are not pastors do not have to obey.
- 2:20We don't have to deal with this. That's for you, man.
- 2:22You need to pay attention to it. You guys.
- 2:24You want us up there talking? But no, he don't let us all off
- 2:27the hook. We are all committed to the Word
- 2:30of God, and the things that he teach us in these epistles
- 2:33actually give us very, very good direction for living the
- 2:37Christian life. And that's one of the reasons
- 2:39why I do enjoy so much reading First Timothy and Second Timothy
- 2:45and Titus, because it's clear direction on what it is that God
- 2:49intends for us as the church, how we should look and how we
- 2:53are separate from the world and how we should treat each other
- 2:58while we are here because we're going to be spending eternity
- 3:00together. So we may as well learn now
- 3:03while we're here, how to get along with each other, how to
- 3:05love each other, how to deal with each other, how to pray for
- 3:08each other, how to serve each other, and how to just be with
- 3:12each other. We got our eternity.
- 3:14Look forward to us. We may well deal with it here,
- 3:16right? Amen.
- 3:18But as we get into the book, I tell you some very interesting
- 3:20things that we have to first look at.
- 3:22First of all, we, we look at the fact that with Paul, it was Paul
- 3:25who gave Titus this assignment as he left him in Crete.
- 3:29Now Paul, Paul initially had gone into the Macedonia, into
- 3:34Macedonia, into the, into the Asia region.
- 3:37And he did set up some churches there.
- 3:40He set up churches in, in Ephesus and of course in
- 3:43Corinth. And he set up a church and the,
- 3:45it's actually one of the largest islands on the Mediterranean
- 3:49Sea. They're in Crete and as Paul
- 3:52began to set up these churches, now some of these churches, he
- 3:54was able to stay for a while. Like with the church, the when
- 3:57he was working with the 1st and 2nd Thessalonians, the
- 3:59Thessalonian church, he was able to stay there for a while.
- 4:02Ephesus, he was able to stay there for a time.
- 4:05And then of course he had to leave Timothy there so that
- 4:08Timothy could be the pastoring to put things in order there
- 4:12that Paul wasn't able to do. But he spent a small amount of
- 4:15time in Crete, and when he spent the time in Crete, he had to
- 4:18leave early for whatever reason, probably because he was on his
- 4:21way traveling toward the Troas, where eventually he would be
- 4:24arrested and taken to Rome and executed.
- 4:28But while he was in Crete, there was other churches that were
- 4:32there and he sent Titus, a trusted worker in the faith.
- 4:38In fact, Titus is described a couple different ways and I just
- 4:42want to go through with that because this was a very faithful
- 4:44worker and very useful for Paul. In fact, it Titus is described
- 4:50in the 1st chapter right here in verse 4.
- 4:53He's described as being a son, a son of the common faith.
- 4:57And we'll get into what that means a little later on.
- 4:59But he's also described in second Corinthians chapter 2 and
- 5:03verse 13 describes him as Paul's spiritual brother.
- 5:07And then in in second Corinthians chapter 8 verse 23,
- 5:11he describes him as Paul's partner and helper.
- 5:15And even in even also in second Corinthians chapter 8, he also
- 5:19talks about him or describes him as being sort of a a positive
- 5:23spiritual role model for those who were that were Paul sent
- 5:27him. Now Crete wasn't the 1st place
- 5:28that Paul ever used Titus. He had actually sent him to
- 5:31Corinth. And we know that Titus was a man
- 5:34of integrity because while he was in Corinth, Paul not only
- 5:38used used him to help put some things in order while he was in
- 5:41Corinth or to help deal with some issues that they were
- 5:44dealing with in Corinth, but he also used him to bring back the
- 5:49money, the offering that the people of Corinth had put
- 5:52together that they were going to take to Jerusalem.
- 5:55Titus was one of the trustworthy people that he used to bring
- 6:00forth that money. And you know that whoever people
- 6:03select to work with the money are people who are trustworthy.
- 6:08They are the trustees, so to speak.
- 6:10But just to give you a little bit of information about this
- 6:13place, Crete, it's an island on the Mediterranean Sea.
- 6:16It is a Greek island. And and of course, Titus was a
- 6:20Greek convert. You know, Paul had ministered to
- 6:24that island and Titus was one of the people that he administered
- 6:27to. So Titus was a son who came into
- 6:30the faith through Paul's ministry.
- 6:33Now the island of Crete is located like southeast of the
- 6:36island of Greece. In fact, if you look at Cyprus,
- 6:39and now since my son had gone to Cyprus to play ball there, I
- 6:42look at everything around the Greek or the Mediterranean and,
- 6:45and kind of look at it around Cyprus to see where things are
- 6:47located. And Crete is actually located
- 6:50West of Cyprus. It's a larger island than what
- 6:53Cyprus is. Very beautiful area there.
- 6:56Now, Crete is about 150 miles long and it's about 35 miles
- 7:02wide. And like I said, it is the
- 7:03largest of the Mediterranean islands.
- 7:06It has over over 100 villages that are located right there in
- 7:11the island of Crete. But there's six main cities that
- 7:15they have there, and that's where the churches are located
- 7:18in, in those six main cities. So when he sent Titus back to
- 7:22Crete to put things in order, it was to those churches that he
- 7:26was going to be working with. Now Crete had a very bad
- 7:30reputation, industry wise, business wise, Crete was a very
- 7:34good place, very nice place to be very prosperous.
- 7:38But in terms of its morality, Crete was a very immoral, just
- 7:44like Ephesus was, and just like Corinth, it was a very immoral
- 7:49area. So he sent him back to a very
- 7:51difficult place to be able to try to put things in order.
- 7:56In this particular church, Titus was used almost like a little
- 8:00point guard. That's because a point guard is
- 8:02that guy on the team that the coach can give instruction to.
- 8:05And he goes and puts everybody in place.
- 8:08He goes and make sure everybody's in the right
- 8:10position, Everybody is doing what they need to be doing.
- 8:13Everybody is functioning together.
- 8:15That's what a point guard does. And he can look and see he's
- 8:18actually the coach on the floor. And that's kind of what Titus
- 8:22was there in Crete. He was, he was Paul's point man.
- 8:25He was his point guard. He made sure that the leaders
- 8:29are put in place, as we're going to see later.
- 8:31He made sure that there were things in order there so that
- 8:35the church could function properly.
- 8:37So anyway, we go on and we see here as we go to chapter 1 here
- 8:41with Titus, we see here that Paul, when he starts off his
- 8:46letter, he describes himself as a bondservant.
- 8:49Paul was a bondservant. Paul says that I am a
- 8:52bondservant of God and an apostle of Jesus Christ.
- 8:56So Paul says I'm a slave, but he's not just a slave because
- 9:00there's a couple types of slaves and he and he did that because
- 9:03in the Roman culture, they are big on slaves.
- 9:06I mean, Romans used slaves for a lot of different purposes, but
- 9:10Paul described himself as a slave of God and he was a bond
- 9:14servant of God. So what Paul is basically
- 9:17saying, like I said, there's a couple different types of
- 9:19slaves. There's a slaves that that that
- 9:21people use that forced, they're forced into labor.
- 9:24OK, There are those kind of slaves forced into labor.
- 9:27Those people don't want to be there, but they're there.
- 9:29They're not there willingly, but they are there because they were
- 9:31overpowered. They were conquered and they
- 9:34were forced into labor. But Paul was a willing slave,
- 9:38like the bond servants. And these are people who
- 9:41sometimes give themselves to be slave.
- 9:43These are the downloads, the people who give themselves to be
- 9:46slaves so that they can either pay off debt or that they can
- 9:49just live. I mean, they're just poor and
- 9:51they don't have any income. They don't have a way of making
- 9:53enough income for them and their families to live.
- 9:55So they sell themselves into slavery and they work for a
- 9:59owner for so many years. And then they get their freedom.
- 10:02They get their freedom again, and some of them choose when
- 10:04it's time. God bless you.
- 10:06God bless you. And some of them, when they
- 10:09choose to get back, when they have the opportunity to get
- 10:12their freedom back, they choose not to.
- 10:14They choose not to. They choose to stay a slave
- 10:17because maybe they love the family or they have themselves
- 10:21made a family while they were there and they want to stay with
- 10:24their family. So they choose to remain a
- 10:27slave. And if they do that, then they
- 10:28would have to go into a doorway. The slave owner, OK, would take
- 10:34an animal and he would put it into the ear, OK, put a like a
- 10:38big plug into the ear of the slave and that indicated that
- 10:41this slave was with us for the remainder of his life.
- 10:45So anyway, Paul says I am a bond slave.
- 10:48In other words, he says I am willingly submitting my will to
- 10:52God. I am a slave of God.
- 10:55That should be all of our testimonies that we are a bond
- 10:58servant to God. We are giving our will to
- 11:02willingly submitting our will to God, not out of, you know, not
- 11:07out of coercion or because we're being forced to, but because we
- 11:10desire to please God. So we live for him, we are his
- 11:15bond servants and he says, and this is he's an apostle of Jesus
- 11:19Christ, which means that he is a messenger of Jesus Christ.
- 11:22Please don't always just separate the two like there's
- 11:24two different people. It is not.
- 11:26And that's why Paul, it had put God and Jesus Christ together
- 11:31because they are equal. They are equal.
- 11:34So he is a bondservant of God and he is a messenger of Jesus
- 11:39Christ. And now Paul goes into talking
- 11:41about it's really loaded everything he has here in these
- 11:44first 3 verses. Now he goes in and talk about
- 11:47the purpose of the ministry that God has called him into.
- 11:51And he says according to the faith of God's elect, according
- 11:56to the faith of God's elect. And what Paul is saying to us is
- 12:00that he is a messenger of God or messenger of Jesus Christ to
- 12:06bring the gospel to God's elect. That is the Gentiles and it is
- 12:13the people of, of Israel who is God's elect, those who trust in
- 12:18Jesus Christ for their salvation, that God before the
- 12:21foundation of the world had chosen in Christ Jesus.
- 12:27And what that is saying now, you know, and we, we know that
- 12:29there's a whole issue that comes up about will versus will versus
- 12:33election and all those things. I can't begin to tell you that I
- 12:36understand everything about how all that connects.
- 12:39All I can tell you is that I believe that what the Word of
- 12:42God says is that both of those things are true.
- 12:46And how that happens, I'm not exactly sure.
- 12:49But we do know that Jesus Christ is able to through His
- 12:53foreknowledge. God, through their
- 12:55foreknowledge, will know who will receive His salvation and
- 12:59who won't. Jesus Christ already said that,
- 13:02that He already knows those who will receive His salvation.
- 13:05He knows those are going to follow Him and He knows those
- 13:07who won't. So he he's called to the gospel
- 13:11according to the faith of the elect.
- 13:14That means he's the one that will speak the gospel to them,
- 13:18to bring them to faith, to share the faith with them so that they
- 13:22will receive salvation. And then the second thing is
- 13:25that and the acknowledgement of the truth.
- 13:29Now this acknowledgement of the truth just simply means that
- 13:31they understand what this true doctrine is.
- 13:35And it's this true doctrine by them hearing true doctrine, just
- 13:39like us when we hear true doctrine coming across the
- 13:41pulpit, it's the doctrine that we can trust in that causes us
- 13:45to live godly. It produces good fruit in us.
- 13:50It's that truth that we hear that causes us to live godly.
- 13:54And that's why it says which accords with godliness or that
- 13:57leads us to godliness. And that godliness we're going
- 14:01to see also is being demonstrated or described as
- 14:04good works as we go through the rest of the books here in Titus.
- 14:10And then in verse 2, it says in hope of eternal life, which God
- 14:13who cannot lie promised before time begin.
- 14:17So that is the end point of our salvation and us walking with
- 14:21the Lord and godliness, the reward that we receive from that
- 14:25or the glory that we receive from that is eternal life in
- 14:29Christ Jesus. That's what it's all about.
- 14:32That's what we're living for. That's that's that hope that we
- 14:35all have that we can share with other people that we will have
- 14:40eternal life because we are those who have trusted and
- 14:44believed in Jesus Christ. So and he said, and that's
- 14:48eternal life that we have was promised to us.
- 14:52Now, it would be one thing if your uncle or your aunt, people
- 14:55that you think that are really popular in your life, that you
- 14:58trusted and that you know, they, you hang on every one of their
- 15:01words and they promise you eternal life.
- 15:04OK, that's one thing. But even beyond their own
- 15:08control, they can lie to you. They can put you down.
- 15:12I mean, they can let you down. They can disappoint you, might
- 15:14not be intentionally, but they can disappoint you.
- 15:17And not only that, but people can lie.
- 15:20God cannot lie. So we're promised this from
- 15:25someone who cannot lie. And the reason why I want to
- 15:28emphasize that because in some versions it has God who will not
- 15:34lie. OK, I like the fact that it says
- 15:37God who cannot lie. Because if you know, there are
- 15:42people that we have in our lives and we say, you know what?
- 15:45I know this person and this guy just will not lie.
- 15:47He will not tell a lie. Well, somewhere along the line,
- 15:50he will tell a lie. Somewhere along the line, he or
- 15:53she will tell a lie. They are capable of telling a
- 15:57lie. Even if you've not heard them
- 15:59tell a lie, they are capable of it because we're all born in
- 16:02sin. We don't have to teach a kid how
- 16:04to lie because he's born in and sin.
- 16:06He has the character or he has that the nature that will allow
- 16:10him to lie. God's nature says he cannot lie
- 16:15because he's God. If God ever lied, he would cease
- 16:18to be God. He would no longer be God.
- 16:20He cannot lie. And I like that because I can
- 16:24grab onto that, say wow, he gave me a promise and he cannot lie.
- 16:30It has to be true. So I mean, so that's something
- 16:33that we as believers, we can always grab onto that and say,
- 16:37you know what? Every promise that God has given
- 16:39me in this word, it's going to come to be because he cannot
- 16:44lie. Now that's good news for us as
- 16:47believers, but it's bad news for those who are unbelievers
- 16:51because all the promises that he gives to us are true or yeah and
- 16:56Amen. But so are the promises that go
- 16:58against the unbelievers. He who believes the Son has
- 17:02everlasting life. He who does not believe the Son
- 17:07has will not see life, but the what wrath of God abides on him.
- 17:13That's true as well. So that's something that non
- 17:18believers are going to have to deal with this God that we
- 17:21serve. He cannot lie.
- 17:24He doesn't lie in our favor as believers, but he doesn't lie
- 17:27also what he promises to unbelievers as well.
- 17:31So he goes on in verse 3 and he says and but has in due time
- 17:36manifested his word through preaching, which he has
- 17:39committed to me, right? He says, according to the
- 17:42commandment of God, our Savior, Paul has been committed the
- 17:46ministry of sharing the gospel of Jesus Christ in this ministry
- 17:52that he has. It has come about in due time
- 17:55because the ministry, you know, God talked about this this
- 17:57promise that he has. You know, he had talked about
- 18:00this before time even began. You know, this promise which was
- 18:03true, and he talked about it in the Old Testament.
- 18:06And then when the time was right, right when the time was
- 18:10perfect for his plan, you know, then he manifested.
- 18:14That means he made visible, He caused it to be.
- 18:17He brought this thing forth through preaching.
- 18:20And that's how men know about this eternal life.
- 18:24That's how men know about salvation.
- 18:26That's how men know about godliness and the true doctrine
- 18:29that leads to godliness. That's how men know about it.
- 18:32It's through the preaching of the gospel.
- 18:35And it's amazing to me that God uses mere men to preach the
- 18:40gospel. This is a very, very powerful
- 18:43thing. The gospel was very powerful.
- 18:46The gospel is a truth that has been through ages.
- 18:50And he uses men, and not perfect men either.
- 18:54We're talking about men who were flawed, men who were imperfect.
- 18:58He uses men like us to preach the gospel.
- 19:01He uses people like you to share the gospel.
- 19:04That's how the gospel gets out there.
- 19:06First Corinthians. What is it 121 that says, you
- 19:09know that it's it's, you know, it's through the foolishness of
- 19:12preaching the gospel that men would be saved.
- 19:16So he preaches through he uses the gospel that the men preach.
- 19:21And that was committed to Paul according to the commandment of
- 19:24God, not the commandment of men. Man never called Paul.
- 19:28He was called by God. And it's the Titus, the true Son
- 19:31in the common faith. This common faith is the common
- 19:35word of God, this Word of Faith that was delivered once and for
- 19:39all, once for all to the Saints, OK?
- 19:42Not a Word of Faith that someone took and changed and, you know,
- 19:46reduced, watered it down. Not that it's the true Word of
- 19:52Faith that was delivered, that was first delivered once and for
- 19:57all to the Saints. It came from Jesus Christ, which
- 20:00came to the apostles, and it came to the rest of us through
- 20:04the preaching of the gospel. That word, that same word that
- 20:08never changed, that was delivered to us even through the
- 20:12word of God here, through those who were eyewitnesses of Jesus
- 20:16Christ. We have that truth.
- 20:19And that's the word that that's the common faith.
- 20:23And then grace, mercy and peace from God the Father and the Lord
- 20:28Jesus Christ and Savior. You know, there's not every one
- 20:32of his epistles that he offers grace, mercy, and peace.
- 20:37Usually it's grace and peace, which is the Greek and Hebrew
- 20:41greeting. We talked about that before, but
- 20:43now we know that he also offers mercy.
- 20:46And all the epistles that are pastoral epistles, he adds mercy
- 20:51to mercy to it. And the reason why is because we
- 20:55as teachers, you who are teachers, are held to a stricter
- 21:00judgment when it comes to the Word of God.
- 21:04We're held to a stricter judgment and we need his mercy.
- 21:09And that's why it's so important that you pray for teachers, you
- 21:13pray for pastors, you and elders, you pray for them as we
- 21:18pray for you because we need the mercy of God.
- 21:23We need the mercy of God. And then verse 5 says, for this
- 21:26reason, I left you in Crete. So now he's going to go into his
- 21:29purpose for even having Titus stay in Crete for.
- 21:33And there's a number of purposes.
- 21:35There's three we're going to talk about the first one, the
- 21:37first purpose is that he puts in order, sets in order the things
- 21:42that are lacking and appoint elders in every city as I
- 21:47commanded you. OK, So he says, I, I'm setting
- 21:50you the creep because there's a there's a need, there's some
- 21:54things lacking there some things that I wasn't able to stay long
- 21:57enough to put in order. So he says, I'm going to you
- 22:00first need to set in order the things that are lacking.
- 22:03Now this whole word to set in order, that whole word really is
- 22:08a medical term and it's a term that really deals or refers to
- 22:12setting a bone, setting a bone setting something that is out of
- 22:17place in your body, some orthopedic problem that you may
- 22:20have that's out of place, Paul says.
- 22:23It's it's a setting in order when those things are out of
- 22:26order. If we have a limb that's out of
- 22:28order, if we have anything that's not lined up right, which
- 22:31is why a lot of people will go, you know, to the specialist to
- 22:35line them up and get their bodies right because things are
- 22:38out of order. And when they're not in order,
- 22:40it causes pain, it causes discomfort, it causes
- 22:43overcompensation of other limbs or other areas of your body,
- 22:48making just cause of dysfunction in your system when things are
- 22:50out of order. Sometimes a bone out of order
- 22:53causes problems. And if the body or limb is out
- 22:56of order, it will let you know because there is, you know the
- 23:00body system is is chaotic and it just doesn't function properly.
- 23:05Well the church is exact same way when things are out of
- 23:08order. If there is no order in the
- 23:10church, there is problems. It doesn't function properly.
- 23:16It doesn't function properly. Then there has to be
- 23:18overcompensation because somebody is doing too much
- 23:21because it's not enough. This is lacking.
- 23:23So somebody feels they got to go over and do that and then that's
- 23:26lacking. So somebody feel like an
- 23:28overcompensation. So people are being burned out.
- 23:30People are being, you know, not used properly or people are
- 23:33getting upset. I mean, when the church is is
- 23:37not in order, things happen in the church.
- 23:40But when it's set in order, when leadership is set in order and
- 23:44things are in order in the church, things go away a lot
- 23:46more smoothly. There's not as much affliction,
- 23:49there's not as much chaos. There's not the vision and the
- 23:52kind of things that can happen when things are out of order.
- 23:57This has been Living Waters of Grace, a ministry of Pastor
- 24:00Lewis Harrell of Calvary Chapel, Westmoreland.
- 24:04Today's message has been on the book of Titus.
- 24:07This book is a master class in how Christians should live in
- 24:11modern culture. Titus was ministering to the
- 24:14people of Crete, an island off the coast of Greece, but he was
- 24:17facing many challenges. The Cretans who came to know
- 24:21Jesus seemed to assimilate Jesus into their existing culture
- 24:25instead of allowing themselves to be transformed by the Holy
- 24:29Spirit inside of them. Others were fully devoting
- 24:33themselves to Jesus but shutting themselves off from the world
- 24:37around them. And the apostle Paul encourages
- 24:40Titus to help his audience find a middle ground where they can
- 24:44live in this world while still following a different way of
- 24:47life in Jesus. If you would like to learn more
- 24:51about what it means to faithfully follow the teachings
- 24:54of Christ in a world full of darkness, we'd love to get
