- 0:01Genesis chapter 37. Let us pray.
- 0:05We thank you, Lord, for another opportunity to come and listen
- 0:09to you, listen to your words, listen to your counsel.
- 0:13Lord, I'm so thankful for Jesus. I'm so thankful for salvation.
- 0:17I'm so thankful, God, that you saved me, or thank you for
- 0:22rescuing me, God, for my own self, rescuing me from all of
- 0:27the carnal impulses. God, I pray you'll cover me with
- 0:30your blood. God, cover me with the covenant.
- 0:34Father, I thank you, Father, for all those who will ever hear
- 0:37this. Lord, I pray that you, Lord,
- 0:40will get all the glory. Hide me and hide my words.
- 0:44Hide my thoughts. God, you come in, you wreck us.
- 0:49God, with your presence, help us to step into the reality that
- 0:54you're moving mightily all around us.
- 0:56God, we love you. We love everything about you.
- 0:59We love your ways, we love your words.
- 1:01Father, help us to see you. See you rightly, God.
- 1:06Lord, I pray for the overwhelming presence of your
- 1:09glory to come. God, I pray that we will feel
- 1:16the tangible presence. God help us.
- 1:20Lord, help us to know that you're fighting our battles.
- 1:24Help us to know that you are real.
- 1:27Help us to know, God, that you are for us and not against us.
- 1:31God, help us to walk in our bridal identity and not squander
- 1:36our inheritance. Lord, help us to be rooted and
- 1:40grounded in your word. Help us to fall more madly and
- 1:44deeply in love with you. God, help us to stiff arm all of
- 1:48the things that are coming at us left and right, front and
- 1:51center. God, I pray that we'll be able
- 1:53to overcome all of the sinful culture, Lord, that is all
- 2:01around us. Lord, I pray that you'll mark us
- 2:06with your goodness and grace and mercy and love.
- 2:10Help us to be the light and the salt for such a time as this.
- 2:14We love you, Lord Jesus, as in your powerful and precious and
- 2:18awesome name that I pray. Amen.
- 2:24Well, let's start in verse one. And Jacob dwelt in the land
- 2:30where his father was a stranger in the land of Canaan.
- 2:34So here we're going to see where this is not necessarily a
- 2:38chronological order of events. Friends were backtracking a
- 2:42little bit, and you need to know that Jacob has come out of his
- 2:48uncle Laban's territory and he's coming back into the land of
- 2:52Canaan where God had called Abraham and Isaac and told them
- 2:57that he was going to give them all of the land.
- 3:00Friends. But there were inhabitants in
- 3:03that land. And every time we turn around,
- 3:06we see that these inhabitants of the land are trying to dilute
- 3:10and pollute God's chosen people here.
- 3:13Let's see how it goes. Verse 2.
- 3:16These are the generations of Jacob.
- 3:19Joseph, being 17 years old, was feeding the flock with his
- 3:24brothers, and the lad was with the sons of Bilhah and with the
- 3:28sons of Zilpah, his father's wives.
- 3:32And Joseph brought unto his father their evil report.
- 3:37So imagine this, friends, we've got to actually pay attention to
- 3:40what's happening in this little verse here.
- 3:44Here Joseph is. He was the only child at this
- 3:48time. He was the only child of Rachel
- 3:52who was Jacob's beloved, and so he had a very special,
- 4:01privileged position within the family.
- 4:04And notice here that the sons of Zilpah and Bilhah, these were
- 4:09the handmaids, the concubines of Jacob, and they were supposed to
- 4:14go out and work the fields and tend the flocks.
- 4:17Whereas this little Joseph was very privileged, and he had this
- 4:23coat of many colors that went down to his ankles and his feet.
- 4:27And it showed that he had the supervision over his brothers
- 4:32because he was his father's favorite.
- 4:40And it caused a lot of animosity, friends.
- 4:43And let's see how it turns out, verse 3.
- 4:47Now Israel loved Joseph more than all his children because he
- 4:50was the son of his old age and he made him a coat of many
- 4:53colors. So this showed that he was over
- 4:57his brothers. This was not a coat that you
- 5:00would wear while doing physical labor.
- 5:03This was a coat that you would wear to show your esteemed
- 5:07privilege status over them and that is what is mentioned here.
- 5:12Verse 4 When his brothers saw that their father loved him more
- 5:16than all his brothers, they hated him and they could not
- 5:19speak peaceably unto him. There was a lot of jealousy and
- 5:22animosity within this very dysfunctional family.
- 5:26Friends 5 And Joseph dreamed a dream and he told it to his
- 5:32brothers and they hated him. Yet the more so this little
- 5:35dreamer here, he didn't understand tact.
- 5:38He had yet to figure out the maturity of when God speaks a
- 5:43word to you to make sure that God is giving it to others as
- 5:48well. At that time you need to
- 5:49understand and have discernment that not everything that God
- 5:53reveals to you is for public knowledge.
- 5:56Sometimes, friends, God has given it to you and it is for
- 6:00your edification. And when you go around trying to
- 6:03share it with everybody, it just makes you seem more spiritual
- 6:06than this them and it causes a wedge and division friends and
- 6:11they don't understand it. And they will actually try to
- 6:13break you down and try to get you to think less of whatever it
- 6:18is that you're trying to share. And people don't understand
- 6:22spiritual matters. And there are a lot of people
- 6:24that are caught up in the physical things of life and the
- 6:28materialistic things of life and they have no appetite for the
- 6:31spiritual. And when you come in trying to
- 6:34share these profound spiritual experiences with them, they are
- 6:38jealous and they don't understand it, and they think
- 6:42that you're trying to be more than what you are.
- 6:45And far be it from us who are spiritual and walking with the
- 6:49Lord, to try to go around and usurp that spiritual authority
- 6:54over others and try to sound high sounding.
- 6:57It is for us to have the discernment to know when we
- 7:00ought to share and when we ought to be quiet. 5 is a wonderful
- 7:09verse. 6 And he said to them, Here, I pray you, this dream
- 7:13which I've dreamed. 7 For behold, we were binding sheaves
- 7:16in the field. And lo, my sheep a rose, and
- 7:19also stood up right. And behold, your sheaves stood
- 7:22round about and made obedience to my sheep.
- 7:25So their sheaves bowed down to Joseph.
- 7:28Joseph stood tall, and all the sheaves of the brothers were to
- 7:32bow down. And we're going to see this play
- 7:34out later on as the story unfolds.
- 7:37But Needless to say that this didn't do anything but cause a
- 7:41lot of division. A and his brother said to him,
- 7:46shall you indeed reign over us, or shall you indeed have
- 7:51dominion over us? And they hated him yet the more
- 7:54for his dreams and his words. So here they hated the plans of
- 7:58God and God's plans will never be thwarted in all of the things
- 8:02that Joseph dreamed actually are going to happen.
- 8:07But you can see how the brothers were provoked by this dream.
- 8:12And they said, We'll never bow down to you, the dreamer aid.
- 8:17And his brother said to him, Shall you reign over us?
- 8:21And they hated him because of the words nine.
- 8:23And he dreamed yet another dream.
- 8:25And he told it to his brothers, and said, Behold, I've dreamed a
- 8:28dream more. And behold, the sun and the moon
- 8:32and the 11 stars made obesience to me.
- 8:35So he sang that the sun and the moon and the stars, which we
- 8:40understand from Revelation chapter 12 as being Israel and
- 8:44the family of Israel, the 12 tribes, we understand it,
- 8:48friends. And he's saying that they are
- 8:50going to bow down. And let's see how old Jacob
- 8:54takes this. 10 And he told it to his father and to his brothers.
- 9:00And his father rebuked him and said to him, What is the dream
- 9:03that you have dreamed? Shall I and your mother and your
- 9:07brothers indeed come to bow down ourselves to you, to the earth?
- 9:11So here even the father rebukes him for sharing this dream.
- 9:16And you need to understand this. God is sharing things with you.
- 9:19It takes tact and discernment to understand when to share those
- 9:23things so that we do not become a stumbling block to others who
- 9:27are not yet where we are. And you can see that this does
- 9:33not take place in a sequential matter because we learned in a
- 9:40previous chapter that Rachel had died, but here Jacob is
- 9:45mentioning that she is still alive. 11 and his brothers
- 9:49envied him, but his father observed the saying. 12 And his
- 9:52brothers went to feed their father's flock, and Shechem the
- 9:5613 And Israel said unto Joseph, Do not your brothers feed the
- 10:00flock? And Shechem come, and I will
- 10:02send you to them. And he said to him, Here I am.
- 10:05And that is our response. When the father sends us into
- 10:08the fields, we say, here I am, father, send me.
- 10:12And you need to also understand this.
- 10:14Shechem was the place where there was a mass issue that the
- 10:23brothers had taken care of concerning their sister Dinah.
- 10:29They had gone in there and obliterated all the men of that
- 10:33place. And here we find ourselves back
- 10:36in Shechem and they're keeping their father's flock in Shechem.
- 10:40So you can see that the story is told from the perspective of the
- 10:46lineage of Joseph, whereas in previous chapters it was
- 10:50concerning the genealogies of Jacob.
- 10:53And that is why it's out of place here. 13 And Israel said
- 11:01unto Joseph, Do not your brothers feed the flock and
- 11:04Shechem. And he says, Here I am. 14 And
- 11:06he said to him, Go, I pray, and see whether it be well with your
- 11:11brothers, and well with the flocks, and bring me word again.
- 11:14So he sent him out of the veil of Hebron into the and he came
- 11:19to Shechem. So Hebron, that's where we're
- 11:21going to get the Hebrews, the ones that are sent out.
- 11:25And you're also going to know here that he's going to
- 11:28supervise his brothers. And that is what the coat was
- 11:33significant to show them. That is what the coat symbolized
- 11:38was his elevated status above his brothers.
- 11:42And that is a very reason why they could not stand him. 15 And
- 11:48a certain man found him, and behold, he was wandering in the
- 11:51field. And the man asked him, saying,
- 11:53What do you seek? 16 And he said, I seek, my
- 11:56brothers tell me, I pray, where they feed their flocks.
- 12:00So here you need to know that Joseph has gone out, and he's
- 12:04trying to be obedient unto the Father.
- 12:06And there is so much here when we're talking about our Lord
- 12:10Jesus Christ. There's so much symbolism in all
- 12:14of Joseph's life, and we could talk about it for days on end of
- 12:19how these overlap with Jesus's ministry while he was here on
- 12:25this earth. 17 And the man said, They're departed from here, and
- 12:30I heard them, let us go to Dothan.
- 12:32And Joseph went after his brothers and found them in
- 12:35Dothan. 18 And when they saw him from afar off, before he even
- 12:39came near to them, they conspired against him to slay
- 12:43him. 19 And they said, one to another, behold, the dreamer
- 12:48comes. So that is the title that they
- 12:50have given them. He is just the dreamer.
- 12:52And they are already starting to premeditate this slaying of
- 13:00their brother, and he is yet to even come.
- 13:04And he was supposed to return back to the Father.
- 13:07And you can see that this is synonymous with the life of
- 13:10Jesus Christ. His own brothers decided to
- 13:13murder him. 20 Come now, therefore, and let us slay him
- 13:19and cast him into some pit, and we will say that some evil beast
- 13:23has devoured him. We shall see what will become of
- 13:26his dreams. So they're trying to outpace and
- 13:29outstep the prophecy that was given against them, that they
- 13:34would bow down unto Joseph. But when we Fast forward the
- 13:38story, you're going to see the very things that they were
- 13:41trying to avoid are the very things that they're going to
- 13:44cause 21 in. Reuben heard it and he delivered
- 13:49him out of their hands and said, let us not kill him.
- 13:52So old Reuben here, he was the one that had laid with his
- 13:56father's concubine in previous chapters, and now he comes to
- 14:00the rescue. But he's trying to appease his
- 14:02brothers at the same time. He could have easily said, no,
- 14:06let's not do this evil thing. But he's trying to play both
- 14:09sides here. 22 And Reuben said unto them, shed no blood, but
- 14:15cast him into the pit that is in the wilderness, and lay no hand
- 14:19upon him, that he might rid him out of their hands to deliver
- 14:23him to his father again. So he was trying to outsmart his
- 14:27brothers by saying, hey, let's just throw him into the pit.
- 14:31And it was his end goal to not kill him, but to make sure he
- 14:35got back to his father. 23 And it came to pass, when Joseph was
- 14:43come unto his brothers, that they stripped Joseph of his
- 14:47coat, the coat of many colors that was on him. 24 And they
- 14:51took him, and they cast him into a pit, and the pit was empty,
- 14:54and there was no water in it. 25 And they sat down to eat bread.
- 14:58And they lifted up their eyes and looked.
- 15:00And behold, a company of Ishmaelites came from Gilead
- 15:04with the camels bearing spices and balm and myrrh going down
- 15:08into Egypt. So here we see another
- 15:13connection with Jesus Christ. We see the myrrh, see that he is
- 15:19going to be sold. And we know that Jesus, whenever
- 15:22he was born, he had to go spend a little bit of time in Egypt
- 15:25before he came back up into the Promised Land.
- 15:27And you see so many different connections with the life of
- 15:30Joseph and the life of Jesus Christ and how his brothers
- 15:36stripped him of his clothes and they cast lots for them before
- 15:41he was beaten by the guards and put up on the cross in mockery
- 15:46and shame. And you can see that these
- 15:48brothers were so completely hard hearted and disconnected from
- 15:53reality, and they cared nothing for this dreamer, that they were
- 15:57able to sit and eat their bread in peace while he screamed out
- 16:01from the pit. 26 And Judas said to his brothers, What prophet is
- 16:10it that we kill our brother and conceal his blood?
- 16:1327 Come, let us sell him to the Ishmaelites, and let not our
- 16:18hand be upon him, for he is our brother and our flesh.
- 16:22And his brothers were content. So old Judah here, this is where
- 16:26the line of the Messiah came out of and he was the one who said,
- 16:30Let us not kill him, but just sell him to these Ishmaelites.
- 16:3628 Then there passed by the Midianites, the merchant men,
- 16:40and they drew and lifted up Joseph out of the pit, and sold
- 16:43Joseph to the Ishmaelites for 20 pieces of silver, and they
- 16:47brought Joseph into Egypt. So what the enemy meant for
- 16:51evil, God's going to use for great good.
- 16:54And God doesn't cause all things to work together, but he makes
- 16:58sure that he uses all the things in our lives to work out for the
- 17:02good of those who love him and who are called according to his
- 17:05purposes. 29 And Reuben returned to the pit, and behold, Joseph
- 17:09was not in the pit, and he ripped his clothes.
- 17:12This was the very one told them not to kill him. 30 And he
- 17:18returned unto his brothers, and said, The child is not, and I
- 17:24where shall I go? So him him being the oldest, he
- 17:27felt the responsibility, and he did not know how he was going to
- 17:31face his father now that the brother was sold into slavery.
- 17:3631 And they took Joseph's coat, they killed a kid of the goats
- 17:40and dipped the coat in the blood.
- 17:41So here they're trying to cover up their time and they're
- 17:45dipping his coat of many colors into the goat's blood. 32 And
- 17:51they sent the coat of many colors and they brought it to
- 17:53the father and said this have we found know now whether it be
- 17:59your son's coat or not. So here they're manipulating the
- 18:03circumstances and they're trying to get their father Jacob to see
- 18:10that he was dead and reality, he was down in Egypt and the plans
- 18:16of God were going to happen through all of their
- 18:20disobedience. And it does not excuse them, but
- 18:24God is sure going to use it. 33 And he knew it and said it is my
- 18:32son's coat. An evil beast has devoured him.
- 18:36Joseph is without doubt ripped in pieces.
- 18:41So you need to know that Jacob should have went to the Lord God
- 18:48and asked the Lord God what this was all about.
- 18:51But instead he just goes to pieces.
- 18:54And this reveals friends, his heart.
- 18:58And there are so many of us when we face these deep tragedies,
- 19:02it's going to reveal the things that we've hidden within us. 34
- 19:07And Jacob ripped his clothes, he put sackcloth upon his loins,
- 19:13and he mourned for his son many days. 35 And all his sons and
- 19:17all his daughters rose up to comfort him.
- 19:20But he refused to be comforted, for he said, For I will go down
- 19:24into the grave to my son. Morning.
- 19:27Thus his father wept for him. So Jacob refused to be consoled.
- 19:32Perhaps there was some suspicion there of the evil that the
- 19:37brothers had done, but he did not admit it.
- 19:39He did not go to the Lord to ask of it.
- 19:41He just refused to be comforted. And they knew it all along what
- 19:47they had done, and they kept it a secret.
- 19:51We'll end on 36. And the Midianites sold him into
- 19:54Egypt unto Potiphar, an officer of Pharaohs and the captain of
- 19:59the guard. So we're going to see how God's
- 20:00going to use this evil intent of his brothers for great good in
- 20:04the land as the story unfolds. I hope you've been blessed by
- 20:07this amazing chapter in God's Word.
- 20:10I know I sure have. I'm praying for every single one
- 20:13of you. I love you.
- 20:14We'll see you back here tomorrow.
- 20:16God bless you.
