- 0:00Welcome to CableTV .com's The Lineup. Today,
- 0:05we are going over our recent survey data, the
- 0:08average cost of a movie ticket, and we're answering
- 0:10a very important question. Are Americans sneaking
- 0:13in snacks to the movie theater? Let's get into
- 0:16it. All right, joined by two of the best, Nathan
- 0:25Sherman and Eric Openshaw. Welcome in, guys.
- 0:29Hey, how's it going? Good hey excited to be talking
- 0:32about the average cost of a movie ticket because
- 0:34like everything else nowadays The price is only
- 0:37going up but how much? Yeah, no this survey is
- 0:41really it's been really fun to look at the data
- 0:43First off craig since you were crunched the numbers.
- 0:46Why did we even run this survey in the first
- 0:47place? Like what's what's why is it worth digging
- 0:49into? Well, I mean with the average age of streaming
- 0:53and everything that's going on. We really want
- 0:55to get sentiment on how people view their entertainment
- 0:58so what we did is we surveyed about a thousand
- 1:02people nationwide movie fans. And then we also
- 1:05collected data from 48 different states. I mean,
- 1:08for some reason, Rhode Island and Vermont were
- 1:10lacking, so they're not on there. But that's
- 1:13where we got our national averages for tickets
- 1:14and concessions. OK, OK. Well, so then I guess
- 1:19that begs the question, what is the actual average
- 1:21cost of a movie ticket? Yes. So I'm curious,
- 1:25like when you back in your day, where were you?
- 1:27How much was it, Eric? Probably like like $10
- 1:31a ticket. Yeah. Yeah, I feel like $8 to 10.
- 1:35Guys get this, we are sitting
- 1:39at $16 and 30 cents for the national average.
- 1:42That's just for a ticket. Well, you know that
- 1:45makes sense because I definitely have been feeling
- 1:48it each time I go I've been choosier too with
- 1:50the movies that I want to go see
- 1:53because it I can feel it in the wallet, you know.
- 1:56Yeah, you almost have to be right? Eric go ahead
- 1:58and pull up that map for us because that's the
- 2:00national average and let's look at it by state
- 2:02I mean just off the hip who do you think is the
- 2:05most expensive right now? What state is leading
- 2:07the way? Oh? New York $25. Oh my goodness, $25?
- 2:14Yeah, right crazy great and then 20 bucks in
- 2:18California $20.61.
- 2:23I Came from Midwest and
- 2:26I was definitely expecting some of them like
- 2:29most of the Midwest to be cheaper but that's
- 2:31not necessarily the case. Okay...
- 2:35Which one is the cheapest state? Okay, so
- 2:37there are some states where you can you know
- 2:39find money in the couch cushion and go off to
- 2:42a movie It's not super expensive, our neighbors
- 2:44to the south, Arizona. Okay, They are $12 and
- 2:4973 cents while Tennessee closely behind $12 and
- 2:5474 cents. Wisconsin's not too bad either. Well,
- 2:57I actually never would have guessed these three.
- 2:59I probably would have said like North Dakota
- 3:01just cost of living super low. But right. I mean,
- 3:05Arizona's cost of living isn't like the lowest.
- 3:07It's probably in the mid-range but pretty cheap for
- 3:10tickets. So that's great news for you Arizonians.
- 3:14No, but if you're planning on moving to a state
- 3:15strictly for the movie cost tickets, here you
- 3:19go. These are your three states to look into.
- 3:21Wisconsin, number three, Tennessee, number two.
- 3:24Yeah, I know that I know cost of a movie ticket
- 3:26is the top priority for anyone moving to a different
- 3:29state 100 %. That's what that's what everyone's
- 3:31first priority is. Okay, Singular movie tickets
- 3:34only though. This is singular movie tickets.
- 3:36Okay, let's look into date. Nice. I mean, there's
- 3:38some of us I'm not gonna judge. I mean Quick
- 3:40poll do either of you go to the movie alone?
- 3:44Never not anymore. I mean I do because my wife
- 3:47hates movies, but I've done it once or twice,
- 3:50but usually it's like a night out for my wife
- 3:52and I okay, so it's a date night Okay. So two
- 3:55tickets, two drinks and a large popcorn. Okay.
- 3:59What do you think the national average is? I
- 4:03guess if a ticket is what it was $15 or something
- 4:08in the average, maybe like a $35. Well, I'm going
- 4:13to say, I'm going to say $55. Okay. Eric, right
- 4:17on the money. $54 and eight cents. Okay. That's
- 4:21a date night. I'm feeling that a little bit.
- 4:23I'm going to the movie tonight. My wallet's crying
- 4:25just a little bit. OK, you know, yeah, well,
- 4:28now that you say that large popcorn is like a
- 4:32couple of bucks more than the actual ticket itself
- 4:34usually. So that makes for sure. That's for sure.
- 4:38And New York, they kind of follow the same trend
- 4:40here. The average their cost for a date night
- 4:43is going to be $73.39
- 4:45with Hawaii $10
- 4:48cheaper. They're the second most expensive.
- 4:50$63.34. That's kind
- 4:53of crazy that there's a $10 difference between
- 4:55New York and Hawaii and you're paying about $75
- 4:59a ticket or no for a movie date night in New
- 5:02York. I mean, like I feel like if I had $75 to
- 5:08go on a date, I could do so many other like really
- 5:11cool stuff than just see a movie unless it was
- 5:14probably a movie I like. I really, really wanted
- 5:16to see. So which probably just means I would
- 5:18see a lot less movies, right? Is that the case
- 5:21for y'all? Yeah. 100%. I mean, maybe call me
- 5:23broke, but that's not just a, Hey, let's go to
- 5:26the movies. That's maybe we got a, we got a plan
- 5:29around that to get to the movies. What are some
- 5:31options that you would go to? Like, what would
- 5:33you do with $75 to have like a really good date
- 5:36night instead of maybe see like a movie that
- 5:38you were kind of like, Oh, maybe I'd see that.
- 5:40Okay. Well, I mean, first of all, you got to
- 5:42go to dinner. That that's a big part. I mean,
- 5:45I'm a big fan of the chilies. Give me a trip.
- 5:47Give me a triple dipper. Okay. That's money out
- 5:51of the pocket. Yeah, no, I was thinking I recently
- 5:55like Go -karting there's a place called the grid
- 5:58that's close by and the race is like $30 Go like
- 6:02having a date night go -karting You probably
- 6:04just wouldn't do as often as you probably would
- 6:06think about going to a movie But if you have
- 6:08$75 instead you could spend it up otherwise I
- 6:11know also a lot of people the way they're trying
- 6:14to save money now too is by going to less of
- 6:16the movies and just renting the movie at home
- 6:18they got Sound bar, a nice sound bar. Oh, yeah
- 6:22TV so you got you spent $20 to rent a movie and
- 6:26you got what? You know $55 left to buy snacks
- 6:31desserts, you know, whatever you like really
- 6:33Yeah, I mean streaming definitely has been disruptive
- 6:35and that's cause I think more people will stay
- 6:37home Throw some popcorn in the microwave grab
- 6:40a couple cans of soda save some money. I mean,
- 6:43there's still some relatively low cheaper states
- 6:46For date nights when it comes to going to the
- 6:48movie Okay, Tennessee, $44 .73, Wisconsin, $46
- 6:53.71. Okay, still kind of come a long way from
- 6:56just picking up, you know, hopping in the car
- 6:58and, you know, going to the movie. No, for sure.
- 7:02No, I think that's really interesting. Like that's
- 7:04definitely the trend, like in this economy, right?
- 7:06Like people are just finding ways to save money.
- 7:09And one of my favorite stats from this survey
- 7:12was how many people are sneaking in snacks. First
- 7:17of all, I'm not going to admit anything, but
- 7:20I understand why people do it. You don't want
- 7:23to incriminate yourself? I'm not going to incriminate
- 7:25myself. Plead the fifth? Plead the fifth. Confession,
- 7:27confession right here? Yeah. Let's go with a
- 7:30solid 71 % of our respondents admitted to sneaking
- 7:33in snacks to the movies. Yeah, the majority of
- 7:36Americans almost. three and four Americans are
- 7:39sneaking in snacks, which is pretty crazy. So
- 7:41if you sneak in a snack and you're worried that
- 7:45someone's judging you a 100%, they're
- 7:47doing it too. Don't, don't feel shame. They,
- 7:51everyone else is doing it. I'm not condoning
- 7:53it. Right. But it's, that's pretty, uh, that's
- 7:56pretty, that's a high number. Yeah. No. And I've
- 7:59seen some pretty wild stuff gets snuck into the
- 8:02theater. Um, one time I saw a family like pull
- 8:05out a full, like several like a box of watermelon
- 8:08wedges like full on and just a bottle of
- 8:11Tajin just loading that up on there and just munching
- 8:13away like it's a summer party, you know in the
- 8:16theater. Hey, don't don't let me catch you smacking
- 8:19on some watermelon in the middle of the Odyssey.
- 8:22Okay, That's going to ruin my movie-going experience
- 8:24super quick, but let's put a bow on this. All
- 8:27right. Let's talk about what I think some ways
- 8:29that maybe you can make this more variable, right?
- 8:31Some ways to save money at the movies. One thing,
- 8:34especially here in the state of Utah, some of
- 8:35these discount days, right? $5 Tuesdays, matinee
- 8:38Mondays. A lot of our respondents are planning
- 8:41their movie-going trips around those days. So
- 8:43something to keep an eye on if that's available
- 8:45in your state. Yeah, 100%. That's like the
- 8:50way to do it. I, we were trying to see a movie
- 8:52the other day with my wife and she was just like,
- 8:54let's go on a Tuesday instead. It was a weekend,
- 8:57but she was like, we're going to save like $15
- 9:00just by going on a different day. So that's a
- 9:03perfect way to save. Um, and if you're like the majority
- 9:06Americans sneaking a little food too, may save
- 9:09you, you know, 10 bucks on, you know, what you
- 9:12would buy at the concessions. So a hundred percent.
- 9:16Okay, and look into some loyalty programs. A
- 9:19lot of you just sign up. You can save on concessions,
- 9:23you save on snacks, movie tickets, some different
- 9:26kinds of fees. Another great way to go, hey,
- 9:28and like Nathan said, and I'm not going to condone
- 9:30this, and I'm not going to tell anyone to sneak
- 9:32in a movie snack, but I will say when you are
- 9:34wearing a long-sleeve shirt, a burrito does fit
- 9:37snugly inside, and it kind of keeps you warm,
- 9:40and it's a perfect holder, but that's totally
- 9:42unrelated. You got to balance it out, one on
- 9:45each side. Gotta balance it out. I didn't say
- 9:46that. I didn't say that. You technically got
- 9:48two spaces if you think about it, right? Yeah,
- 9:51that's four burritos. Do the burrito math. No.
- 9:54So some great ways to save some money, but if
- 9:59you're looking, you know, still go out, enjoy
- 10:02the movie, but take advantage of those, you know,
- 10:05certain discounts. What we're going to do is
- 10:09we're going to be back here every week giving
- 10:11you ways to save on your entertainment, giving
- 10:13you stats, talking about some surveys, talking
- 10:15about some data, diving into it and giving you
- 10:17alternative choices to really stream and get
- 10:21your entertainment.
