  [SPEAKER_00]: And tomorrow we're getting into the nitty gritty of Jaguars versus Panther's the week one matchup.

  [SPEAKER_00]: I'm excited about it, but again, right now we are previewing the Jaguar's defense and special teams.

  [SPEAKER_00]: Well, the bottom line from a special team's perspective is you've got Heath Farwell retained as your special team's coordinator.

  [SPEAKER_00]: He's one of the best in the business.

  [SPEAKER_00]: You've got Cam Little as your kicker, one of the best in the business.

  [SPEAKER_00]: You've got Logan Cook as your punner, one of the best in the business.

  [SPEAKER_00]: You've got Ross Madison as your long snapper, one of the best in the business, and you have got a ton of players that excel on special teams.

  [SPEAKER_00]: Enough said, the Jack Wars will have a very good special teams unit if these people continue to perform the way that they have over the last

  [SPEAKER_00]: Now, looking at the Jaguar's defense is what we're gonna do because special teams just does not need to be talked about a lot, not because it's not important, but because the Jaguars have really good special teams.

  [SPEAKER_00]: The one area you could say, well, it's a question mark.

  [SPEAKER_00]: Maybe the kick returner, we don't know exactly how that's gonna play out, but I think that there's a number of options to feel good about.

  [SPEAKER_00]: One thing I hate really, it sucks because you've had a new defense of coordinator two years in a row here and there was a lot.

  [SPEAKER_00]: I mean, a lot of enthusiasm when Ryan Nielsen was hired last year in Jacksonville.

  [SPEAKER_00]: It felt like everywhere you turned, no matter who you talked to.

  [SPEAKER_00]: There was excitement about his ability as a defensive coordinator and wasn't even just potential as a defensive coordinator.

  [SPEAKER_00]: He was a co-defensive coordinator in New Orleans and he was a full-time defensive coordinator in Atlanta the year before a year in which they improved in a lot of important metrics.

  [SPEAKER_00]: He was hardworking all these things but it did not come together.

  [SPEAKER_00]: And there's a lot of excitement about Anthony Campanela right now.

  [SPEAKER_00]: But I think some of that excitement is getting dampered because of the memory of what happened last year.

  [SPEAKER_00]: Also because he actually doesn't have the experience of being a defensive coordinator at this level.

  [SPEAKER_00]: He did call plays at Boston College, but he doesn't have the experience of being a defensive coordinator at this level.

  [SPEAKER_00]: So what's he got?

  [SPEAKER_00]: He's got pedigree.

  [SPEAKER_00]: I mean, he's been around a ton of great defensive minds.

  [SPEAKER_00]: He's coached under a ton of great defensive minds.

  [SPEAKER_00]: He was on a really good defensive
• 3:49
  [SPEAKER_00]: Staff last year under Jeff Halfley.

  [SPEAKER_00]: He was the linebackers coach and defensive run game coordinator in Green Bay for a defense that that really did improve a lot and did a lot of good cool things.

  [SPEAKER_00]: He's worked under Vick Fangeo Brian Flores.

  [SPEAKER_00]: I mean, the list goes on and on, but those are the three

  [SPEAKER_00]: most recent influences, Flores, Fangeo, Hathley.

  [SPEAKER_00]: And look at the Minnesota Vikings and Flores, and they're one of the most respected defenses, Daphse and the NFL.

  [SPEAKER_00]: You look at Fangeo and Philly, same thing.

  [SPEAKER_00]: You look at Hathley and Green Bay, same thing.

  [SPEAKER_00]: So he's been in the right spots lately.

  [SPEAKER_00]: There's no doubt about that.

  [SPEAKER_00]: He's got a lot of personality.

  [SPEAKER_00]: a lot of personality.

  [SPEAKER_00]: And I don't think it's like the showy, you know, look at me type of guy.

  [SPEAKER_00]: I think he's genuine, very genuine, very high energy, same guy every day, excitable, motivator talks about and brings toughness.

  [SPEAKER_00]: Like it's all about toughness for him, toughness in communication.

  [SPEAKER_00]: If you can play the game tough and communicate,

  [SPEAKER_00]: He believes you can get the job done.

  [SPEAKER_00]: Can he dial things up in a way that works for his guys, in a way that opposing offenses can't pick up on?

  [SPEAKER_00]: Can he keep opposing offenses on their heels a little bit?

  [SPEAKER_00]: Can he dictate a little bit, right?

  [SPEAKER_00]: He's got some pieces, right?

  [SPEAKER_00]: Super talented pieces at certain spots, some young pieces, some veteran guys coming in.

  [SPEAKER_00]: There's some question marks at different spots on the roster on defense.

  [SPEAKER_00]: There's good leadership, I think at all three levels.

  [SPEAKER_00]: I think the idea for this defense is that there will be a mixed defensive front.

  [SPEAKER_00]: A nickel on the field more often than not.

  [SPEAKER_00]: That's why Jordan Lewis is here.

  [SPEAKER_00]: A cover two shell more often than not.
• 5:57
  [SPEAKER_00]: Eyes on the ball.

  [SPEAKER_00]: Eyes forward.

  [SPEAKER_00]: Zone defense.

  [SPEAKER_00]: I think that's the basic idea.

  [SPEAKER_00]: You give them a lot of different looks up front.

  [SPEAKER_00]: You have a nickel on the field a lot.

  [SPEAKER_00]: Cover two shell a lot.
• 6:10
  [SPEAKER_00]: Eyes on the ball.

  [SPEAKER_00]: And then you really mix things up a lot and give offences unscathed looks in key moments.

  [SPEAKER_00]: And he'll light you up.
• 6:20
  [SPEAKER_00]: You saw it during the preseason a little bit.
• 6:23
  [SPEAKER_00]: Some of these safety blitzes or even sim pressures with safeties and a sim pressure, you know, you're still just sending four players, but you don't know where those four players are coming from.

  [SPEAKER_00]: And that can mess up your offensive line protection rules, assignments, create confusion, create chaos,

  [SPEAKER_00]: And you know, create an advantage, create a defense that can dictate a little bit more to the offense.

  [SPEAKER_00]: Usually you think about offense and defense and the offense is dictating to the defense.

  [SPEAKER_00]: If the defense can flip the script a little bit while remaining sound on the back end.

  [SPEAKER_00]: that can really, really disrupt offenses and give you an advantage.

  [SPEAKER_00]: They'll shift some coverage as post-snap.

  [SPEAKER_00]: I mean, I think that they will have their bread and butter stuff, but then again, on some of these money downs, you're not gonna know what's coming.

  [SPEAKER_00]: Most of the time, they're going to try to get there with four or five.
• 7:23
  [SPEAKER_00]: They're going to try to keep everything in front of them on the back end, take their shots at forcing turnovers when they present themselves.

  [SPEAKER_00]: What do I mean by that?

  [SPEAKER_00]: With this defensive back field, Tyson Campbell, Travis Hunter, Jordan Lewis, Eric Murray, Andrew Winger,

  [SPEAKER_00]: These guys really do excel at having eyes on the quarterback in zone coverage.
• 7:52
  [SPEAKER_00]: And they all have the ability to jump routes.
• 7:56
  [SPEAKER_00]: So you're taking your shot every once in a while.

  [SPEAKER_00]: And sometimes when you do that, you're going to give up a big play.

  [SPEAKER_00]: Sometimes when you do that, you're going to make a big play.

  [SPEAKER_00]: So that's where I think the variance can come in with this defensive back field.

  [SPEAKER_00]: And also just if you have teams that can

  [SPEAKER_00]: Push the ball deep down the field quickly.

  [SPEAKER_00]: I think that can present some issues for the Jaguar safety group in coverage.

  [SPEAKER_00]: But their idea is again, put a roof over the offense.

  [SPEAKER_00]: Have a lot of numbers back there.

  [SPEAKER_00]: and force you to throw the ball and then we can jump some routes because Travis Hunter is a lead at jumping routes.

  [SPEAKER_00]: Jordan Lewis is a lead at jumping routes.

  [SPEAKER_00]: Tyson Campbell is very good at jumping routes.

  [SPEAKER_00]: Again, when he has eyes in the back field, I think wingered and Murray are good in that regard, too.

  [SPEAKER_00]: So that's kind of the name of the game with the back end, I think, and then also combining that with the defensive front that features Josh Hines Allen and Trayvon Walker

  [SPEAKER_00]: I believe in those two as much as I believe in anything on this team.

  [SPEAKER_00]: Point blank.

  [SPEAKER_00]: How good can the interior be on the defensive front?

  [SPEAKER_00]: I think you have this incredibly high ceiling, this potential for something that could be special with Eric Armstead and Mason Smith.

  [SPEAKER_00]: You haven't seen it much because they were both dealing with injury early on in training camp.

  [SPEAKER_00]: Eric Romstick came over last year and the Jaguars idiotically pushed him outside to play edge to be their edge three.

  [SPEAKER_00]: One of the strangest, most bizarre dumb decisions of a long line of dumb decisions in Jaguars history.

  [SPEAKER_00]: And when he actually did play inside, he was actually pretty effective.
• 9:53
  [SPEAKER_00]: But the Jaguars are playing him where he should be played now.

  [SPEAKER_00]: Inside the tackles, get after the quarterback, get Eric Armstead, get Josh Hines Allen, Trayvall Walker all on the field at the same time.

  [SPEAKER_00]: Mason Smith is another one where it's like, man, if he can hit, because you do have Devon Hamilton.

  [SPEAKER_00]: You do have Austin Johnson.

  [SPEAKER_00]: You do have Colin Saunders.

  [SPEAKER_00]: You've got these guys that can execute their job, but they don't have that ability to change the game from an athletic perspective the way Eric Armstead or Mason Smith does.

  [SPEAKER_00]: So you do have like the floor guys, the glue guys, which I really like the depth there overall.

  [SPEAKER_00]: But you do not, with those players, you don't have that same athletic upside.

  [SPEAKER_00]: Murray's getting fired up a little bit over.

  [SPEAKER_00]: Actually, here's a truck outside.

  [SPEAKER_00]: So you don't have the same athletic upside or physical upside with Colin Saunders with Austin Johnson.

  [SPEAKER_00]: Murray, hush.

  [SPEAKER_00]: with Devon Hamilton, as you do with Eric Armstead and Mason Smith.

  [SPEAKER_00]: So you're hoping those guys can really hit for you.

  [SPEAKER_00]: Mason Smith, to me, is more of a question mark than Eric Armstead from a, can't he get the job done perspective, but it also feels like Eric Armstead has just been dealing with injuries a lot throughout his career, missed some time lately.

  [SPEAKER_00]: So those are the question marks on the interior.

  [SPEAKER_00]: But if Eric and Mason can really get after it, that's going to be some special with Josh Hinesown and Trayvon Walker.

  [SPEAKER_00]: And then you also combine the fact that they will use stunts, they will use games up front.

  [SPEAKER_00]: They also have Emmanuel Agba who can kick inside, Trayvon Walker who can kick inside.

  [SPEAKER_00]: and this is in past rush downs and the one smoking kick inside you also have as a past rush or Dennis Gardeck who underrated piece but like if you go back and watch him at Arizona

  [SPEAKER_00]: He's this kind of hybrid player.

  [SPEAKER_00]: He's a great special teams player talking about the special teams guys, but great special teams player, but great just banshee off the edge.

  [SPEAKER_00]: I think they nicknamed him the barbarian, but like he is a really dangerous past pressure that you can deploy as well.

  [SPEAKER_00]: On the second level, I strongly believe him for you.

  [SPEAKER_00]: I think that, I mean, he's a captain for a reason.

  [SPEAKER_00]: He's been a captain since he's been here, he's an awesome player, he's a great leader, he's got all the ability in the world.

  [SPEAKER_00]: Devin Lloyd and Ventra Miller, they can play the run, they can run and hit, they can fill, can whoever is on the field with foil, Luke, and at Lymebacker, not be a liability in coverage.

  [SPEAKER_00]: With Ventra, it's more about his lack of

  [SPEAKER_00]: True, high-level athleticism in coverage with Devon Lloyd.

  [SPEAKER_00]: It's more about just mental mistakes, not really understanding his assignment all the time or not executing his assignment all the time.

  [SPEAKER_00]: In coverage, both of those guys have the potential to be really good number two linebackers next to FOIA.

  [SPEAKER_00]: Can they not be a liability in coverage?

  [SPEAKER_00]: If not, I mean how long is it till we see Jack Kaiser on the field?

  [SPEAKER_00]: I don't know.

  [SPEAKER_00]: So the good thing is that linebacker, if Devon Lloyd struggles, in coverage, okay?

  [SPEAKER_00]: We can turn to Ventrel and hopefully he can get it done.

  [SPEAKER_00]: If Ventrel struggles, let's see the rookie at some point.

  [SPEAKER_00]: You don't want to thrust him into the action immediately, but at some point I think that that could be the case because Jack Kaiser plays smart.

  [SPEAKER_00]: Not the biggest, not the strongest, not the fastest, but he's a good football player.

  [SPEAKER_00]: We talked about corner, talked about safety.

  [SPEAKER_00]: I think especially in the back end at safety, the communication is going to be so critical.

  [SPEAKER_00]: Because Eric Murray and Andrew Winger aren't the two most physically gifted safeties in the world.

  [SPEAKER_00]: They're not the biggest, they're not the fastest.

  [SPEAKER_00]: But communication instincts, that's going to be their Trump card if they have a Trump card.

  [SPEAKER_00]: Overall, I think that this defense has the potential.

  [SPEAKER_00]: The ability to be a top twelve to fourteen defense, but I also think they could be bottomate.

  [SPEAKER_00]: I see a lot of variance potential in this defense.

  [SPEAKER_00]: Again, how well does it come together for Anthony Camponele as a continued motivator strategist week to week game planner, moment to moment play caller, all these things.

  [SPEAKER_00]: How does it go for Eric or I'm set in Mason Smith?

  [SPEAKER_00]: How does it go for lineback or two?

  [SPEAKER_00]: Can Tyson Campbell stay healthy?

  [SPEAKER_00]: These are all the questions that this defense has to answer.

  [SPEAKER_00]: I do believe in Anthony Campanile.

  [SPEAKER_00]: But from an objective standpoint, we just have not seen it at this level ever yet.

  [SPEAKER_00]: He hasn't had the opportunity yet.

  [SPEAKER_00]: He's got it now.

  [SPEAKER_00]: What's he going to make of this opportunity and how are his players going to execute what he's asking of them?

  [SPEAKER_00]: That's what we are going to find out starting this this Sunday against the Carolina Panthers.

  [SPEAKER_00]: You know, Bryce Young is a talented young quarterback.

  [SPEAKER_00]: So we'll see pretty quickly how well these guys are prepared.

  [SPEAKER_00]: Now that's not the biggest test they'll have, but it is the first test, and I think it's a good test to start out with, because there's some things to worry about, but it's not like the most pressure packed offense that you're ever going to face.
