- 0:00You're listening to Beyond the Sermon, the podcast the First
- 0:02Methodist Church in Collingswood, NJ.
- 0:05On our podcast, the goal is not just to share our sermons, but
- 0:08to go beyond the sermon and talk about what we're learning and
- 0:10what God is doing in us and in our community.
- 0:13This fall, we're living in the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke,
- 0:16and John and learning how to live from our model, Jesus.
- 0:19This conversation was inspired by our series The Gospels.
- 0:23You can find more information about our church at
- 0:25fumccollingswood.org. Thanks for joining us for this
- 0:29conversation. Well, thanks for joining us
- 0:32today. We are here with an extra
- 0:35special guest this morning. It might not be morning for you,
- 0:38but we're we're having the conversation in the morning.
- 0:42But special guest Ken Frank. Ken has been a member of our
- 0:47congregation for the last few years and a long time resident
- 0:51here in Collingswood. Do you actually live in
- 0:54Collingswood or is it technically?
- 0:57Had in Township. Technically had in Township.
- 0:59Yeah, they said years ago like 1/3 of my lawn was in
- 1:02Collingswood and what we we paid the, the owner of the house paid
- 1:0850 or $70 a year to Collingswood for that little piece of lawn
- 1:13and then the rest. Then Collingswood finally said
- 1:16just pay all your taxes ahead in Township.
- 1:19So my next door neighbor is Collingswood.
- 1:21Really. A person across the street is
- 1:24Collingswood. Yeah.
- 1:25Partial property. It's it's wild how the how the
- 1:28lines. Go.
- 1:29It was weird. Does that mean that it's still
- 1:30Collingswood? They just don't want to fight
- 1:33over pennies. I I.
- 1:34Or did they change the outline of Collingswood for your third
- 1:38of a long? I I don't know how it works.
- 1:41I have no idea. All I know is I pay too much
- 1:44taxes to have in Township. I know that much.
- 1:47We have that in common in Collins.
- 1:49Yeah, I'm sure you did. Well, Ken, give us a little bit
- 1:53of biographical background, you know, tell us a little bit of
- 1:56who you are. What makes Ken Frank, Ken?
- 2:00Frank Well, I was raised by two Christian parents and two
- 2:05Christian grandparents. My grandmother was like another
- 2:09mother to me. I had two mothers growing up and
- 2:13always went to church, always made sure I went to church,
- 2:16always made sure I went to Sunday school.
- 2:19But when I was in school at Woodland, I was a little kid
- 2:22below. They only went up to 8th grade,
- 2:23so like 5th, 6th grade. We would walk one day a week, I
- 2:28think it was Wednesday. We would walk one day a week
- 2:30from the school to the Methodist Church and we would have like an
- 2:35hour lesson and then we would walk back.
- 2:38I don't know why they don't stay.
- 2:39They used to do that here in Collingswood, too.
- 2:40They'd come here to this church or depending on which
- 2:44neighborhood you were in. Yeah, it would be like you'd get
- 2:48released from school early to go have Bible club.
- 2:53Wow. At the church, yeah.
- 2:55I remember, I learned so much and I still remembered a lady,
- 2:59Missus Hartman. I remember at Easter time she
- 3:03was telling the lesson of Jesus at Easter and how he was
- 3:06crucified on the cross. She had so many tears running
- 3:11down her face. I, I was so touched by that
- 3:14Lady. I still remember Missus Hartman.
- 3:17She, she taught me some. That's what I mean, ever since I
- 3:20can remember, I've always been a Christian.
- 3:23I've always loved the Lord. That's why people have these
- 3:26great things they can say about, Oh, how I was saved and, and I
- 3:31did this before and, and I, I found the Lord and I've always
- 3:37known the Lord since I was knee high to A, to a frog.
- 3:40You know, I mean, I just, in fact, if I, I remember like it
- 3:45was yesterday, one day I showed up to church.
- 3:47My parents had already been there.
- 3:49For some reason, I didn't go to Sunday school that, that week,
- 3:52but we, I always went to Sunday school and they did, but I got
- 3:56there later or whatever, and I didn't have a tie on that day.
- 4:00My mother was beside herself. Shit.
- 4:03You, you can't come to the Lord's house with, with, you
- 4:05know, without a tie, a jacket on and a nice white shirt.
- 4:09I just didn't have the tie on and she flipped out over it.
- 4:13So I, I, I've always, I've, I've always known the Lord.
- 4:18I wasn't always as close to him as I am now.
- 4:23And I, I thank you and you and this church for helping me to
- 4:28come closer and, and want to serve God.
- 4:31I, I'm still nervous counting money every 3rd Monday or every
- 4:35second Monday when I and I, I would have never even thought of
- 4:38doing that years ago. But like I said, I don't have
- 4:42anything exciting to say about how I found the Lord.
- 4:46I always have known the Lord, but I've seen the Lord work in
- 4:49my life countless times and I, I've been blessed by him.
- 4:56I, I know my wife is in other faiths.
- 4:59She's Catholic, but she's a wonderful Christian.
- 5:03She believes in Jesus. She knows she's saved.
- 5:07I've been so blessed by her. She's always been where, where I
- 5:14would would go to church on Sunday, but I would just go to
- 5:16church on Sunday. And then all week I, I was so
- 5:18busy at work. I, I, I wasn't as close to the
- 5:22Lord. She was always close.
- 5:24She was always, always, always close.
- 5:26And she still is. And it it helps me because when
- 5:30I see her then I I want to do more also.
- 5:34Well, I I have a trick for you for if you come into the same
- 5:38situation as you did as a kid, take off the shoelace, tie it
- 5:42around and say it's a bolo tie. There you go 'cause I have some
- 5:45of. Those exactly in.
- 5:48Colorado with my parents as a as a kid, I was probably about 17
- 5:52or 18 and I bought a couple of those out there and I still have
- 5:55them in my drawer and in my bedroom.
- 5:57Oh. Yeah, no, my grandfather only
- 5:59did bolo ties after he retired from RCA, he said I'm never
- 6:02wearing a tie again. So he only did the bolo ties.
- 6:05And So what? What town did you grow up in?
- 6:08Hannon Township. I grew up in woodland right next
- 6:11door. Right next door.
- 6:12So you stayed local and whole? Life.
- 6:14I grew up in the Marshall Memorial Methodist Church in
- 6:18Woodland, and I still remember the pastor there.
- 6:21When I was there, Pastor Sermon, I thought that was the greatest
- 6:24pastor's name ever. I said, how much, how much
- 6:26better her name can that be for her pastor?
- 6:29It's not as exciting as Rambo, but.
- 6:33But gets to the point. But yeah, I can still see his
- 6:38face. He was a wonderful man.
- 6:39And he had two daughters, Mildred and Melissa, and they
- 6:42were in the same grade. They were twins and they were in
- 6:45the same grade as I was in in Woodland School and we went to
- 6:48school together and we were pretty close.
- 6:50Wow. And so you mentioned wife and
- 6:54you mentioned work. So I don't know which came
- 6:57chronologically in your life, what career did you do?
- 7:02And also, how did you meet your wife and.
- 7:04When I first got out of college, I worked at the IT doesn't even
- 7:07exist anymore. It's the Gloucester County
- 7:09Times, the newspaper I sold advertising for them, not my
- 7:13personality to be a salesman. I did it for four years, didn't
- 7:18like it. And my dad had a, had a friend
- 7:22that lived next door to us in Woodland when I was growing up,
- 7:25George Lilly. And he was a boss at PSE&G.
- 7:30And my dad just mentioned to him something, you know, my dad said
- 7:34to me, why don't you call George, you know, tell him
- 7:36you're unhappy in the job you're in and maybe he can help you get
- 7:40in. And he, he's, he's been a mentor
- 7:44to me. He, we go out to dinner
- 7:46together. And I, I had 35 years at PSE and
- 7:49GI, started out just reading meters and then I went into the
- 7:53office in the bookkeeping department, did accounting work
- 7:57there. And all, all, all wonderful
- 8:00people I worked with. I loved, I loved working at
- 8:02PSE&G Thank God I'm, I'm one of the last few that still get a
- 8:06pension and how people work at PSE&G, There's no more pensions.
- 8:10It's just a 401K. So I have, I have the pension
- 8:13from there. And so I, I've been blessed by
- 8:17that. My, my wife, I, I met her at a
- 8:20dance and we just hit, hit it off right away.
- 8:25I, I think I talked her ear off about the Eagles, but she was
- 8:30from Philadelphia. So she but she didn't watch
- 8:33football or whatever, but she acted like she was interested in
- 8:36football because this nut was talking to her about football.
- 8:39Yeah. How old were you at that dance
- 8:41when you met her? 19. 19. 19, yeah, yeah, young
- 8:46now. I'm 71 now, We've been together.
- 8:49For a few minutes. She's stuck with me for a lot of
- 8:51years. I don't know how she did it, but
- 8:53she did it. And I've been blessed by her.
- 8:56I was telling Pastor Jeremy before we came in here that
- 8:59she's always been close with the Lord and and always served at
- 9:04our church way more than I ever did.
- 9:08And it made me want to do that here.
- 9:11Yeah, you made me want to do that here.
- 9:13Just just knowing you. 2 And and being with so many, the men's
- 9:20Bible study there's like it's grown.
- 9:23When I started, when I started with them like two or three
- 9:25years ago, it was like 11 of us. Now it's up to 16 and we get
- 9:32texts between each other all the time asking for prayers.
- 9:38It's been a blessing in my life. It's brought me closer to the
- 9:41Lord than I ever have been. And I've told you 100 times
- 9:44about the Thursday morning prayer meeting.
- 9:47There's something about 6:30 in the morning, especially today,
- 9:50it was dark as all heck, but coming in and, and coming into
- 9:55the, to the prayer meeting and reading the Bible with other
- 10:01believers. And it's just, and something
- 10:04about that room that there's I, I always say to them by things
- 10:08I'm nuts, but I say there's something about that parlor.
- 10:12I'm almost closer to the Lord and I guess because it's more
- 10:14confined than in the sanctuary. But when I work at the pantry
- 10:19and I come here to the pantry, when I leave the pantry, I
- 10:21always go in that sanctuary and pray and I can stay focused
- 10:26better there, kneeling at the kneeler and praying in there.
- 10:29Because one of one of the guys in, in the Bible study always
- 10:33says, you know, I have a hard time staying focused when I
- 10:35pray. And I, I told him, I said, well,
- 10:39I says, he doesn't belong to this church.
- 10:41He lives further away. I says what I do, I says, I come
- 10:45into the sanctuary, There's nobody in there.
- 10:47It's quiet. And I kneel at the kneeler and I
- 10:50pray and I, and I'm so much closer to the Lord that way.
- 10:54For some reason. I, I can pray at home.
- 10:56I have my own little area at home.
- 10:58I pray, I enclosed my front porch and that's my area.
- 11:02I have all my, my Bibles there, all my different books that I
- 11:07that I read about the Lord and I'm so I got a little love seat
- 11:13across from me and I, I picture Jesus sitting right there when
- 11:17I'm praying and it's it, it, it really, it's helpful to me.
- 11:23That's beautiful. I love that you're talking about
- 11:26a lot of how you've grown and and changed while you've been
- 11:30here. How did you get from Pastor
- 11:33Sermon to this church? When I worked at PSE and GI
- 11:38worked so many hours, I shouldn't have worked as much as
- 11:42I did. I didn't follow the Lord as
- 11:46closely then, and when I retired this one, I really came closer
- 11:53to the Lord and I had a great pastor in Collingswood, Pastor
- 12:00Jerry Anderson. He's the one that him and
- 12:05another pastor helped me, helped me and my wife get our daughter,
- 12:11adopt our daughter, and he brought me close to the Lord.
- 12:17He baptized me. He was a Baptist minister right
- 12:20here in Collingswood, the Baptist Church, and then he left
- 12:24here and he went out to Pennsylvania.
- 12:26And at least once a month I would drive out to his church in
- 12:32Pennsylvania and hear him preach.
- 12:34And then we would always go. He was near Lancaster.
- 12:38We'd always go to the Shady Maple Buffet.
- 12:41As one does when they're near Lancaster.
- 12:44I mean, you're driving it off. Right.
- 12:47Exactly. Yeah.
- 12:49So yes, pastor, pastor and his wife and me and my wife, we
- 12:54would, we would take him out to to lunch or dinner, whatever it
- 12:59was after church. It is, it is.
- 13:04He always kept me close to the Lord, but the whole time I knew
- 13:10him, I was working at PSE&G and I was working so many hours.
- 13:13I didn't serve the Lord. I, I went to Sunday church
- 13:18every, every Sunday and listened to his preaching and, and I, I
- 13:22loved it. I was attending after Pastor
- 13:25Jerry left Collingswood and went out to the Lancaster area.
- 13:29I, I, I didn't like the way they had him leave.
- 13:32They, they basically told him to leave.
- 13:35I didn't like that. I loved the man like my like a
- 13:38second father. So I didn't go to church at all.
- 13:44So he called me one day and he asked me how I was doing and how
- 13:49I was doing at church and how things were going.
- 13:51I said, pastor, I haven't been to that church since you left
- 13:53and I'm. Sure.
- 13:55He was like, good job, good job, Ken.
- 13:59That's exactly what I wanted to hear, right?
- 14:02I don't think he thought that, but he was, he was, he said to
- 14:05me, he says, I know a wonderful church for you to go to.
- 14:09He says Laurel Springs Baptist Church and you know, it was like
- 14:131/2 hour drive or 25 minute drive from where I lived.
- 14:16And I said, but I went and my, my mom always went with me.
- 14:20So I would pick my mom up and we drive down to Laurel Springs
- 14:23Baptist Church and I like the pastor there, Pastor Meldrum.
- 14:27He was, he was a good man, a good pastor.
- 14:31My mom really got bad with Alzheimer's, terrible, terribly
- 14:37bad. And I didn't want to put her in
- 14:40a home. So we were able to bring a lady
- 14:44in from Ghana. She was a wonderful lady,
- 14:48Pauline, and she a little hard to understand sometimes with her
- 14:53accent and all, but she took care of my mother wonderfully.
- 14:59And my mother was hard to take care of because she was not in
- 15:02her right mind. And as she kept her clean and
- 15:05she kept her wonderful and all, and but my mother couldn't
- 15:10attend church. Why I couldn't take her to
- 15:13church. And I never got one call from
- 15:19the pastor, never asked about her, never asked about me,
- 15:25because I didn't go either. And I was, I was really hurt by
- 15:30that. And then one day I think I
- 15:32called him and I said, I don't know what to do with my mom.
- 15:36She's really bad. I don't know if Pauline's going
- 15:38to be able to continue taking care of her.
- 15:41And he says you should put her in, I forget some place it had
- 15:45in Cherry Hill. He says, put her in there,
- 15:47she'll be fine. And it was like a kind of an
- 15:50abrupt conversation. And it it really.
- 15:55So I stopped going. That wasn't right.
- 15:59And I was, that's probably my darkest time away from the Lord.
- 16:03I didn't know the Lord as well as I do now.
- 16:07I fell away from him and I wanted to get closer.
- 16:13And I didn't know what church to attend.
- 16:15I didn't know what church to go to.
- 16:17And my sister, Joyce Berry, she belonged here.
- 16:22You didn't know. Oh yeah, yeah, Joyce is my
- 16:25sister. Anyway, she said, oh, we just
- 16:28got a new pastor at the at the Methodist Church here, Pastor
- 16:33And Bob, he was old Rambo. You can't forget his name is
- 16:36Rambo. He's got a great name.
- 16:39I says. I said, OK, I said I'll come in
- 16:42and and and see what it, you know, see if I like the church
- 16:45and the the first Sunday I was here.
- 16:48I don't know what you you just well, you came up and saw me
- 16:53before the church even started and shook my hand and you said
- 16:57your name is Scott, which I can't call you Scott 1st, 1st.
- 17:01And I can't call you Jeremy. Everybody calls you guys by your
- 17:04first name. I'm, I'm, I just not cut that
- 17:06way. Yeah.
- 17:07I just can't do it. So I call you Pastor.
- 17:09You're not the only one. And I always call you pastor.
- 17:11You're old enough to be my son, but.
- 17:14And grandson and grandson, but I'll always call you pastor.
- 17:20But anyway, she, she told me how much she liked it here.
- 17:23And, and I was touched by your sermon and I, and I even went
- 17:27and kneeled, kneeled at the front and prayed.
- 17:30And you came over. I remember you're putting your
- 17:32hand on my shoulder and I was so touched.
- 17:37And I, I think I asked you that Sunday if I could join your
- 17:41church. And you did.
- 17:43And it took a little while, but I finally was able to join.
- 17:46And I just every week it seems it gets better and better for me
- 17:52here. I, I, I love coming here.
- 17:55I love this church, the people I've met in here.
- 18:01Lou Farling is like, is like another father to me now.
- 18:07I'm probably close to his. I'm 71, he's 80 something.
- 18:11So I mean, he's not old enough to be my father, but he brought
- 18:15me to the men's Bible study, told me all about it.
- 18:19And I, I spoke to him. I says, you know, when I came to
- 18:23this church to live, I said, I just had a feeling that this was
- 18:26where I should be. This is where I'm going to learn
- 18:28to be close to, to the Lord. He says, Kenny, that's the Holy
- 18:32Spirit talking to you. That's the Holy Spirit telling
- 18:34you this is where he wants you. Yeah.
- 18:36You sure, right. And I just, I, I, I love coming
- 18:41here. I love being with the people
- 18:43here. It's just they everybody just
- 18:47makes you feel like you've known them for 100 years.
- 18:50And I'm horrible with names, especially as I'm getting older
- 18:53now I'm 71. I'm horrible with names.
- 18:56But people don't care. They don't, you know, they laugh
- 18:59about it if I tell them or call them a wrong name or say I
- 19:02forget their name or whatever. Lovely lady.
- 19:05I don't know her, her last name, her first name's Carol.
- 19:08And I always remember, she says. And I says, I'll forget your
- 19:11name, Carol. She says, think of Christmas
- 19:13Carol when you see me and you always remember now I always say
- 19:17Christmas Carol, how are you? She's in my Sunday school
- 19:22normally. And she, she, she was in the
- 19:259:00 with, with the old group of people.
- 19:28And now we're all together, which is a great thing.
- 19:30I think it's so much better say that again.
- 19:32When I, when I, when I sit there, I sit there with my, with
- 19:36my friends from the pantry. And I got to talk to you guys
- 19:38about the pantry. I got to do an advertisement for
- 19:40my but when I sit there with with Connie Klein and and Bob
- 19:46Holmes and Pastor Escher, who I've come to love.
- 19:51He's a great. He is, he is a great person.
- 19:54And it, it, it's the, it's the greatest thing in the world.
- 19:58And I'm right in the center of the church.
- 20:00You're right. I, I can't look away from you.
- 20:03And it's just it, it's, it's wonderful.
- 20:08It's, it's, it's, it's, it's fantastic.
- 20:12And I've come closer to the Lord thanks to thanks to you, thanks
- 20:18to Pastor Jeremy, thanks to this church, thanks to everyone
- 20:22connected with this church. It's been a blessing to me.
- 20:26I didn't know you were new. I like.
- 20:29'Cause you came like 3 years. Yeah, you came after him, but
- 20:33before May, so I just assumed. And like you said, the way that
- 20:37everyone just takes you in. Yeah, I just assumed that you'd
- 20:40been here for. They'd take me in like I've been
- 20:42here my whole life. Yeah.
- 20:44And I haven't. I'm like 3 years.
- 20:46And that's great. And it's so funny when you
- 20:49mentioned the calling, calling us pastor is that when I, when I
- 20:53like came into this job and ministry, I'm like, I'm
- 20:57perfectly. It took me a while to get used
- 20:59to being called pastor just because I never thought I'd be
- 21:01one. But then like, after a while I
- 21:03was like, OK, I, I've come to accept it.
- 21:06The time that it's odd for me is in Mexico, where people, once I
- 21:09got the title started calling me pastor.
- 21:11But I grew up with them and they, they just known me,
- 21:13Jeremy. So then it switched to like a
- 21:15very formal, I'm like, you've been calling me headache my
- 21:19whole life. And now, now it's pastor.
- 21:21And there's like this, this tone and respect to it.
- 21:24I was like, it's fine. I'm still being.
- 21:26I'm still. Same guy.
- 21:28But yeah, no, I, I always, I always appreciate and respect.
- 21:32And for me, it's a good reminder of the calling in which God has
- 21:38specifically put me in. Like I know my responsibilities
- 21:41within the church, but to hold that title and what that means
- 21:46to many of people, it's always a good reminder.
- 21:49So I I want to say that I appreciate you sick and sticking
- 21:53to that, even though it still throws me off every once in a
- 21:56while, still throws me off just 'cause I forget it sometimes,
- 21:59but I'm. 71 years old and and you're so young and I, but I,
- 22:03you're, you're, you're a pastor. So to me, I I can't call you
- 22:07Jeremy. Yeah, no, I appreciate it.
- 22:10And our our final question for you is what are you excited
- 22:16about in the future of this church?
- 22:20I pray every day and every night that we keep this building and
- 22:25we keep this beautiful church. But let me talk about the pantry
- 22:29first. The the pantry is, is close to
- 22:34my heart. I, I love helping the people,
- 22:37people that need gosh, the price of food.
- 22:40Now you can't go to a grocery store without spending 80 bucks
- 22:43on one bag of food. And so I try to do everything I
- 22:50can to help at that pantry and, and having at our church is
- 22:54wonderful. It's the greatest thing ever
- 22:57when I forget. I, I worked one day at the
- 23:01Cherry Hill food pantry, but that's not associated with a
- 23:05church or anything, right? I could tell the difference
- 23:09right off the bat and, but I, I would have stayed there, but I
- 23:13only worked there one time. It was ready to Thanksgiving.
- 23:15We were giving out turkeys and all.
- 23:16I, I liked it and all, but then they said, well, Pastor Scott's
- 23:20thinking about having the pantry come to our church and he's
- 23:23going to have a meeting with Susan Merrill.
- 23:26And I was just so excited about it, and I was just thrilled that
- 23:31it came to our church. Yeah, God really orchestrated
- 23:33those things. Yeah, yeah.
- 23:36So we do 25 to 30 families. It's like over 100 people were
- 23:41feeding. Absolutely, that makes a
- 23:43difference. It does whatever we can do with
- 23:46the pantry. It it, it touches me.
- 23:49Yeah, it. I love it.
- 23:50Yeah, and it's a beautiful thing when we can be used to be the
- 23:53handsome feet of God. Thank God I came here and I
- 23:57found Pastor Scott and Pastor Jeremy because I can see the
- 24:03Lord Jesus and both of you and I tell you how I love Thursday,
- 24:10Thursday morning, the prayer meeting is it is the greatest
- 24:15for me. I just thank both of you for for
- 24:18being here and for being here for me and for being here for
- 24:20everyone. Well, I'll I'll push that blame
- 24:25to God and let him take the credit for it, but can I close
- 24:30our time in prayer? That all right, Always.
- 24:34God, we're so grateful that you are a God who is always at work
- 24:40and you are always working things together to bring about
- 24:45your ultimate purposes. And we don't always understand
- 24:50how the journeys that we've been on have gotten us to the point
- 24:54where we are, but we we know God, that it's because you're
- 24:58working. And so today we want to pray for
- 25:03those whose whose journeys have taken them away from you.
- 25:07And we we trust God that you are the one who knows hearts and
- 25:14minds you. You don't judge us by our
- 25:16outward appearance, but you know our hearts.
- 25:18And we pray God, that those who have known you and and walked
- 25:26away from you, God, would you bring them back to yourself?
- 25:29Would you draw them close to your heart?
- 25:31For those who who have never known you, God, we pray the same
- 25:35thing. Would you reveal yourself to
- 25:38them and, and draw them close to your heart?
- 25:41God, we thank you so much for this time with Ken and for his
- 25:46part in our congregation for the the things he's involved in and
- 25:50loves and for the ways that you've met him and used him and
- 25:54those things. God, we pray you'd continue to
- 25:56use our food pantry here at the church to reach out and meet the
- 26:01needs of our community. God and pray that you would
- 26:04continue to raise up people to to donate towards that and and
- 26:08to serve there. God that we would be able as a
- 26:13church to continue to be your hands and feet in the world.
- 26:18God, we love you and we thank you and we pray all this in your
- 26:20name. Amen.
- 26:24Well, that's our conversation for today, but that doesn't mean
- 26:26the conversation is over. We'd love to hear your thoughts
- 26:29on these topics as well. To ask a question about anything
- 26:32we've discussed in this episode or to join the conversation, you
