- 0:09Speaker 1: Welcome to the Favorites the podcast from the Action Network.
- 0:13Speaker 1: I am Chad Moment. Today's topic betting and golf, because
- 0:19Speaker 1: the Action Network announced a massive new deal, a first
- 0:23Speaker 1: of its kind deal with the p g A Tour.
- 0:27Speaker 1: It's called Golf Bet. It's where you can get all
- 0:30Speaker 1: the best golf betting, action, conversation, content, data, everything you
- 0:38Speaker 1: need to enjoy betting on golf. Later on in the show,
- 0:43Speaker 1: we've got master impressionist, comedy genius, social media phenomenon Joy
- 0:47Speaker 1: Molinaro coming on, as well as Jason Sobel, Action Network
- 0:51Speaker 1: senior writer, host of the Action Network podcast Download, Subscribe,
- 0:56Speaker 1: Rate Review. But first let's get to the main thing.
- 1:01Speaker 1: The main thing. You've got a very special guest, multi
- 1:06Speaker 1: time p g A Tour winner, Mr Brendan Steele, Brendan Steel,
- 1:13Speaker 1: Brendan Steel and Steel. I just want to be able
- 1:17Speaker 1: to hit them all higher, a little bit farther, Steel
- 1:19Speaker 1: with a rip off the twelve Star, the Bows, the
- 1:25Speaker 1: way head of Steel. How good was that? Wow? Fellas, Brendan,
- 1:32Speaker 1: how are you? I'm doing great? Thanks having guys. I'm
- 1:36Speaker 1: really glad you're on. I'm really glad we're doing this
- 1:38Speaker 1: deal with the p g A. We've known for two
- 1:40Speaker 1: years that, like the massive amount of interest that fans
- 1:44Speaker 1: are developing in golf, The massive amount of interest that
- 1:47Speaker 1: has been developing in golf, I think largely from DFS
- 1:50Speaker 1: the past couple of years. Like it's bringing an entirely
- 1:52Speaker 1: new generation of fans that are getting excited about sort
- 1:57Speaker 1: of the opportunity to gut to watch guys play and
- 1:59Speaker 1: what every show that really means. How much do you
- 2:01Speaker 1: feeling stuff like that? On the course, there has been
- 2:05Speaker 1: definitely a huge swing with DFS. I mean, people are
- 2:08Speaker 1: always yelling at me, you know, I've I've got you
- 2:10Speaker 1: in my draft kings this week, or I'm gonna need
- 2:13Speaker 1: you to finish off this parlay or you know whatever
- 2:15Speaker 1: they've got going so um, I mean there's a lot
- 2:17Speaker 1: of people looking at matchups, uh dfs, people taking long
- 2:21Speaker 1: shots every week because you can get way better odds
- 2:23Speaker 1: obviously in golf than you can betting other sports, getting
- 2:26Speaker 1: guys at one one maybe even more that can win
- 2:29Speaker 1: the win the tournament. So we've definitely felt a big
- 2:32Speaker 1: change in the last few years, and it's it's been
- 2:34Speaker 1: fun at times and then other times, you know, guys
- 2:36Speaker 1: are pissed at you because you make a bogie on
- 2:38Speaker 1: the last hole and you're like, well, you know, I'm
- 2:39Speaker 1: not actually trying to do that, and it's gonna cost
- 2:42Speaker 1: me a lot more than it's gonna cost you. Then
- 2:44Speaker 1: we announced this deal yesterday. The deal was announced, there
- 2:47Speaker 1: was a story in the Washington Post amongst many other
- 2:49Speaker 1: places by Ben Strauss, who's the writer there, and he
- 2:52Speaker 1: tweeted out the story and a writer named Jason Gave
- 2:54Speaker 1: from The Wall Street Eneral responded that, like, golfers are
- 2:57Speaker 1: gonna hate this because of the social media response, and
- 3:01Speaker 1: my feeling to that is, well, they've already been dealing
- 3:04Speaker 1: with it because betting is legal in Europe. They're dealing
- 3:07Speaker 1: with it because of DFS. How much do you even
- 3:10Speaker 1: worry about something like that. I don't think it's going
- 3:12Speaker 1: to change that much. We'll we'll have to wait and see.
- 3:15Speaker 1: Because even while betting isn't legal in every state, like
- 3:17Speaker 1: people find a ways to beat I mean, you can
- 3:19Speaker 1: have a book, you can have online account in the Bahamas,
- 3:23Speaker 1: or you know, whatever the case may be. So we're
- 3:26Speaker 1: seeing a lot. I'm sure there's gonna be a lot
- 3:27Speaker 1: more of it now, but we're already getting a lot
- 3:30Speaker 1: of hate when we when we make mistakes anyway, So
- 3:32Speaker 1: social media is never a fun place no matter what
- 3:35Speaker 1: you're doing. Steely, you can say that you're getting a
- 3:37Speaker 1: lot of hate. I would say that you guys are
- 3:38Speaker 1: amongst the most coddled athletes, and specifically you are most
- 3:42Speaker 1: the most coddled athlete. If a quarterback doesn't play well,
- 3:46Speaker 1: every talk show in that city, every social media guy
- 3:50Speaker 1: and that's is criticizing that quarterback for the next seven
- 3:53Speaker 1: days until he plays again, and then he plays well
- 3:56Speaker 1: and they love him again, whereas golfers aren't necessarily accustomed
- 3:59Speaker 1: to that criticism them. And I mean five ten years ago,
- 4:01Speaker 1: you'd go out there and no one's rooting against you,
- 4:04Speaker 1: and no one's mad if you don't play well, other
- 4:06Speaker 1: than yourself and your caddy and your family. Uh, what
- 4:08Speaker 1: is it like you? Do you like that? Do you
- 4:10Speaker 1: embrace the fact that, Hey, I've got guys rooting for me.
- 4:12Speaker 1: I want them to win. I want to win for myself,
- 4:15Speaker 1: but I want them to win by betting on me,
- 4:17Speaker 1: by playing DFS with using me in a line up. Yeah. Absolutely,
- 4:21Speaker 1: I definitely want that. I definitely embrace it. I mean
- 4:23Speaker 1: I played DFS. I like to gamble on other sports,
- 4:26Speaker 1: not on golf, but I know that feeling, and it's
- 4:30Speaker 1: nice to feel like you're a part of something. And
- 4:32Speaker 1: I would like to to have some great story where
- 4:34Speaker 1: somebody that could really use the money wins, like a
- 4:36Speaker 1: million bucks on a DFS thing because I win the tournament.
- 4:39Speaker 1: I mean, that would be really really cool. So, UM,
- 4:41Speaker 1: I do like that part. I like that specifically, I'm
- 4:43Speaker 1: the most caddled athlete. That's nice. I appreciate that. UM.
- 4:47Speaker 1: I try not to pay attention to what's going on
- 4:49Speaker 1: on social media at all because it's not going to
- 4:51Speaker 1: be overly helpful to me. But in general, I do
- 4:54Speaker 1: think that golfers are are obviously treated better and more
- 4:58Speaker 1: fairly than than a lot of other plates. But I
- 5:00Speaker 1: would argue that there are people that are rooting against
- 5:03Speaker 1: you and have been for your entire career, whether it's
- 5:06Speaker 1: even just other pros that don't like you, you know,
- 5:08Speaker 1: fans that decide that they don't like the way your
- 5:10Speaker 1: dress or they don't like your swing, or you know,
- 5:12Speaker 1: people have always hated my grip and my golf swing
- 5:15Speaker 1: and stuff like that, so they think that, you know,
- 5:16Speaker 1: they don't want me to play well, But this is
- 5:18Speaker 1: gonna be interesting. We'll see if it's like just an
- 5:21Speaker 1: instant change or if it just gradually keeps building momentum
- 5:25Speaker 1: the way it has been over the last few years.
- 5:27Speaker 1: It's interesting that you say golfers have it better than
- 5:29Speaker 1: other other athletes. I know, Sobel's kidding when he says
- 5:32Speaker 1: that you're coddled like you're a guy, and like like
- 5:38Speaker 1: he's seeing in his courtesy car right now. I mean,
- 5:40Speaker 1: come on, the only thing I could get service? What
- 5:43Speaker 1: kind of courtesy cars that? What does this? The yukon
- 5:45Speaker 1: something like that? You could practically live in that thing?
- 5:49Speaker 1: You definitely it would be better than what I was
- 5:51Speaker 1: living in when I was playing the Canadian Tour. What
- 5:54Speaker 1: were you living in when you were playing the Canadian Tour? Well,
- 5:57Speaker 1: we just on the road. We would always have like
- 5:59Speaker 1: three or four guys jammed into some tiny rental car
- 6:02Speaker 1: and none of us were twenty five, so we had
- 6:04Speaker 1: to pay all the extra insurance on it. And we
- 6:06Speaker 1: have guys like sitting on the emergency break for a
- 6:09Speaker 1: three hour drive, you know kind of thing. So it
- 6:11Speaker 1: was wild in those days, but it was super fun.
- 6:13Speaker 1: It was probably way more ridiculous than than anything that
- 6:17Speaker 1: happens out here. So we have a lot better stories
- 6:19Speaker 1: from the Canadian Tour than the PGA tour. Who were
- 6:22Speaker 1: some of the guys that you would get jammed into
- 6:23Speaker 1: the car with back then, are you still playing with them?
- 6:26Speaker 1: And so most of them aren't playing. The guys that
- 6:29Speaker 1: I was really close with in those days, guy named
- 6:31Speaker 1: Joe Lanza and Liam Kendrick and they both played at St.
- 6:34Speaker 1: Mary's and we were buddies in college. And then Greg Wells,
- 6:37Speaker 1: who's still my closest friends. They're not playing golf anymore.
- 6:40Speaker 1: They all turned throw at the same time and we
- 6:42Speaker 1: traveled around Canada. There's just not a lot of space
- 6:45Speaker 1: for for guys out here. So unfortunately, most of the
- 6:48Speaker 1: time you end up having to get a job after
- 6:50Speaker 1: you know, four or five years of playing professionally. At
- 6:52Speaker 1: what point did you think to yourself, maybe this isn't
- 6:56Speaker 1: gonna work out for me. I've had a lot of
- 6:58Speaker 1: those moments over the years. I've had him even while
- 7:00Speaker 1: I'm playing the PGA Tour, that maybe it's like it's over,
- 7:03Speaker 1: it's done, like you're never going to play well again.
- 7:05Speaker 1: I heard a quote one time That's that I thought
- 7:08Speaker 1: was really accurate. I think they were talking about a team.
- 7:10Speaker 1: I think it was even on remember when they do
- 7:12Speaker 1: the Winter Classic to lead up to the Winter Classic
- 7:14Speaker 1: on HBO, they were talking about how a team is
- 7:17Speaker 1: never as as bad as you think they are when
- 7:19Speaker 1: they're at their worst, and they're never as good when
- 7:21Speaker 1: they're they're at their best. That's kind of how it
- 7:23Speaker 1: is when you're playing golf. Like when you're playing your worst,
- 7:25Speaker 1: you think you're never gonna come out of it, and
- 7:27Speaker 1: there's never any hope. And then as soon as you
- 7:30Speaker 1: get a feel or play a good round, you think
- 7:32Speaker 1: you've got it and it's never gonna leave you again.
- 7:34Speaker 1: And the reality lies somewhere in the middle. But it's
- 7:37Speaker 1: hard to manage those emotions and navigate that while you're
- 7:40Speaker 1: while you're going through it. I will tell you a
- 7:41Speaker 1: quick story the two thousand fifteen Safe Way Open. Would
- 7:45Speaker 1: you lead by three going into the final rounds? I
- 7:47Speaker 1: definitely had the lead I left for the first three
- 7:49Speaker 1: rounds for sure. I Mean it was like, you know,
- 7:52Speaker 1: he's looking he's looking to go wire to wire, he's
- 7:54Speaker 1: playing really well, playing his best golf going into the
- 7:56Speaker 1: final round He's a one time winner on the PGA
- 7:58Speaker 1: Tour already, but feeling really good, everything's going well, and
- 8:02Speaker 1: he blows up in the final round. Yeah yeah, really
- 8:06Speaker 1: just at the end and fished in fifteenth place. And
- 8:08Speaker 1: you and I texted that night, and you were not
- 8:11Speaker 1: happy with yourself and your game. To put it mildly, Um,
- 8:14Speaker 1: there was there were idle threats of never picking up
- 8:17Speaker 1: a golf club Agan and in getting out, which I
- 8:20Speaker 1: get was just sort of the anchor in the moment.
- 8:22Speaker 1: The moral of the story, though, is that he went
- 8:24Speaker 1: on to win the two thousand sixteen safe Way Open
- 8:26Speaker 1: and the two thousand seventeen safe Way Open the very
- 8:29Speaker 1: next two years, and it just goes to show sort
- 8:31Speaker 1: of those downs in professional golf and then those wild ups.
- 8:35Speaker 1: I mean, the ebbs and flows are are crazy and
- 8:38Speaker 1: sometimes just works in sort of mysterious ways like that. Yeah, definitely,
- 8:42Speaker 1: I mean that that was a wild, wild turn of events,
- 8:44Speaker 1: and um, that was a low point just from the
- 8:47Speaker 1: standpoint of I really wanted to win that tournament and
- 8:49Speaker 1: I felt like that completely blew it. And I didn't
- 8:51Speaker 1: like blow it and finish fifth or third or something.
- 8:54Speaker 1: I blew it. And you know, dropped the way back,
- 8:56Speaker 1: so that's never good. But there's other times when you know,
- 9:00Speaker 1: maybe you've missed four or five six cuts in a row.
- 9:02Speaker 1: Guys are going through it right now out here, Um,
- 9:04Speaker 1: they're always going through it and and they don't know
- 9:06Speaker 1: if they're ever going to come out the other side.
- 9:08Speaker 1: And uh, it's can you really really lonely out here
- 9:11Speaker 1: when that's going on. So you've talked about Phil Nicholson
- 9:14Speaker 1: being a really good mentor for you and like teaching
- 9:16Speaker 1: you about the value of adding shots to your game
- 9:20Speaker 1: year after year. What are some things that you've learned
- 9:23Speaker 1: about coming back from sort of late round disasters like that.
- 9:29Speaker 1: What are what it's advice that either Nicholson is giving
- 9:31Speaker 1: you that other veteran tour pros who've given us for
- 9:34Speaker 1: stuff like that. Phil Um he told me early on
- 9:37Speaker 1: in my career, you're what you're trying to do is
- 9:41Speaker 1: add a shot every year. So what he means by
- 9:44Speaker 1: that is maybe you're not a good fairway bunker player,
- 9:47Speaker 1: and one year you focus on fairway bunker play and
- 9:50Speaker 1: then you kind of get that down. I mean, you
- 9:52Speaker 1: still have to work on it, you have to have
- 9:54Speaker 1: practice on it, but you make that a focus for
- 9:56Speaker 1: one specific year, and then the next year maybe you
- 9:58Speaker 1: work on some sort of a bomb around the greening
- 10:00Speaker 1: or a flop shot or a flighted wedge or you know,
- 10:03Speaker 1: doing something like that. And then if you play out
- 10:06Speaker 1: here for fifteen twenty years, you've added all these different
- 10:09Speaker 1: layers of things that you can lean on, and you
- 10:12Speaker 1: kind of look up one day and go, Wow, I
- 10:13Speaker 1: can do this, this and this that I couldn't do
- 10:15Speaker 1: when I was twenty, and now I've got all these
- 10:17Speaker 1: different things that I can do. So that's kind of
- 10:19Speaker 1: speaking to that part, and then for later in the round.
- 10:22Speaker 1: Still has always told me, and specifically after I I
- 10:25Speaker 1: blew up at the two thousand eleven when I had
- 10:29Speaker 1: to lead in my first movie Jory On in the
- 10:30Speaker 1: final round. He told me after the round that what
- 10:34Speaker 1: I did wrong was I didn't stay patient enough and
- 10:37Speaker 1: use the entire eighteen holes to make a score. And
- 10:39Speaker 1: that really stuck with me, especially like the last couple
- 10:42Speaker 1: events that I had had a chance to win, like
- 10:46Speaker 1: even just this last week at Honda, I was really
- 10:48Speaker 1: trying to use all eighteen holes and not kind of
- 10:50Speaker 1: overreact to the fact that I got down a couple
- 10:53Speaker 1: of shots early. I was trying to be really patient,
- 10:55Speaker 1: use the whole eighteen hole of the whole round in
- 10:57Speaker 1: order to get back into the position I wanted to
- 10:59Speaker 1: be in. That is a great story. So at what
- 11:03Speaker 1: point does like Nicholson come up to you and say
- 11:06Speaker 1: this In two thousand eleven, we were texting, probably that
- 11:11Speaker 1: night or the next day. Um, he was watching pretty close.
- 11:14Speaker 1: He's close with Kegan Bradley and I and and Keeking
- 11:17Speaker 1: won the tournament and I blew it. So he had
- 11:19Speaker 1: kind of a weird, you know, range of emotion than
- 11:22Speaker 1: kind of like, um, he's taken both of us really
- 11:24Speaker 1: under his wing from the time we were rookies out here.
- 11:27Speaker 1: So um, he had one one guy do great and
- 11:29Speaker 1: one guy blow up, and he was kind of, I think,
- 11:31Speaker 1: trying to congratulate him and then pump me up and
- 11:34Speaker 1: tell me what I did wrong and help me for
- 11:35Speaker 1: the future. So he's pretty awesome that way. How did
- 11:38Speaker 1: you guys become close? We share the same agent, he
- 11:41Speaker 1: get and I got on tour at the same time.
- 11:43Speaker 1: We both won in Texas our rookie year, and then um,
- 11:46Speaker 1: they set up around for us to go play with
- 11:49Speaker 1: Phil and we kind of hit it off and we've
- 11:50Speaker 1: been doing it ever since. All right, let's take a
- 11:53Speaker 1: quick break. I want everyone to listen to this story
- 11:57Speaker 1: that our in house racontour Daniel Scotty had when he
- 12:03Speaker 1: confronted an Olympic silver medalist boxer in the parking lot
- 12:09Speaker 1: of a fairway in Long Island, and how that led
- 12:13Speaker 1: to a massive winning bet for Daniel Scotty. So it's
- 12:19Speaker 1: the day of the big fight, Fight night. If you will,
- 12:22Speaker 1: you know Fury Wilder too. I've gone back and forth
- 12:26Speaker 1: the entire week leading up to the fight about who
- 12:28Speaker 1: I was going to bet on. You know, on Tuesday
- 12:31Speaker 1: I was confident and Wilder, but by Wednesday I'm hell
- 12:34Speaker 1: bent on Fury. And this kind of just kept repeating
- 12:37Speaker 1: up until Saturday, no clarity given. Looking for a sign
- 12:41Speaker 1: that could lead me to the winning side of this fight.
- 12:44Speaker 1: That leads us to Fairway, where I stopped after my
- 12:47Speaker 1: morning cardio to pick up a nice cool kombuch it
- 12:52Speaker 1: to relax on. So I walked into Fairway, I grabbed
- 12:55Speaker 1: the kombucca, I walked towards the register and as I
- 12:58Speaker 1: get on the line, I note that there's an old
- 13:01Speaker 1: decrepit looking man wheeling a wagon who thought he was
- 13:05Speaker 1: before me, and we exchanged some words. But he's an
- 13:08Speaker 1: old guy, so I was trying to be as respectful
- 13:09Speaker 1: as possible, and it got to a point where he
- 13:12Speaker 1: dropped his age as like reason for why I should
- 13:14Speaker 1: go first, and I was just like, man, like, live
- 13:16Speaker 1: the long life. I honestly don't give much sympathy to
- 13:19Speaker 1: the old card. But you know, in this case, I
- 13:21Speaker 1: let him go because he was he was fighting back
- 13:23Speaker 1: and I was like, you know, this is crazy, so
- 13:25Speaker 1: I let him go. He rings out, I ring up
- 13:28Speaker 1: my stuff. I walk out, and as I walked into
- 13:30Speaker 1: my car, I noticed that he's struggling to get his
- 13:33Speaker 1: groceries into his So, you know, if for no other
- 13:36Speaker 1: reason other than karma, I figured, you know, let me
- 13:39Speaker 1: help old man out lea van clif Clint Eastwood in
- 13:42Speaker 1: in a few dollars more that type of boy old
- 13:45Speaker 1: man relationship. So I help him throw his stuff in.
- 13:48Speaker 1: He gives me a big smile. He looks at me,
- 13:50Speaker 1: says you play any sports, and I'm like, no, look
- 13:52Speaker 1: at me him. You know, I kind of retired from
- 13:54Speaker 1: the whole sports thing. He pulls out a gold necklace
- 13:58Speaker 1: from under his shirt and it's these two big gold
- 14:01Speaker 1: plated boxing gloves and he goes, I boxed, and I'm like,
- 14:05Speaker 1: you watching the fight tonight, and he goes, who's fighting Lomachenko.
- 14:09Speaker 1: And at that point I kind of just assumed this
- 14:11Speaker 1: guy didn't know what he was talking about. He was
- 14:13Speaker 1: like an old cooker or whatever. But he proceeds to
- 14:15Speaker 1: speak at length after I tell him it's Fury and Wilder,
- 14:18Speaker 1: about each of the fighters, their strengths, their weaknesses, and
- 14:22Speaker 1: it gets to a point I asked him who he's got.
- 14:24Speaker 1: He goes, Wilder camp box, Fury can box a little bit,
- 14:27Speaker 1: take Fury, and I'm like, shit, like you know, there's
- 14:29Speaker 1: my sign. Long story short. Before the guy leaves, he says, yeah,
- 14:33Speaker 1: box for Armenia in the sixties, took home a medal
- 14:36Speaker 1: in the Olympics. He sticks out his hand to give
- 14:38Speaker 1: me like a handshake, and I'm like, no, no, no,
- 14:41Speaker 1: we've we've come, We've come further than that. So I
- 14:43Speaker 1: kind of pull him in for a hug, and as
- 14:45Speaker 1: I pull him in for a hug, he reels off
- 14:48Speaker 1: like four or five quick shots inside you know, Kidney
- 14:51Speaker 1: punches pop pop, pop, pop pop before I could even
- 14:54Speaker 1: like look up and I just smile at the old
- 14:56Speaker 1: best and I'm like, yeah, you still got it. So
- 14:58Speaker 1: I go home and I, you know, empty out the
- 15:00Speaker 1: account of Fiori and Man. By the time that fight
- 15:02Speaker 1: got stopped in the seventh round, all I want to
- 15:05Speaker 1: do was thank that oh Man Tip. But um, I'll
- 15:08Speaker 1: see him around. I'm in that fairway pretty often. All right,
- 15:14Speaker 1: let's get to the next thing. The next thing. So well,
- 15:20Speaker 1: I know you have so many questions about Michelson and
- 15:24Speaker 1: the Tuesday Games. Fire away. I love stories. I trade
- 15:27Speaker 1: in stories. My favorite story of the Tuesday Game includes
- 15:31Speaker 1: you and Silly. You're not going to tell the story
- 15:33Speaker 1: as well as Phil told me the story later that
- 15:36Speaker 1: afternoon in the parking lot at TPC Sawgrass. But if
- 15:39Speaker 1: you don't tell as well as Phil, I will fill
- 15:40Speaker 1: in some of the blanks in my best Phil voice.
- 15:43Speaker 1: All right. So we go out and we play with
- 15:46Speaker 1: Cold Nose and Jamie love Mark and Phil and I
- 15:50Speaker 1: take those guys on and we get off to a
- 15:52Speaker 1: good start. We're having our way with them early, and
- 15:55Speaker 1: then we start losing some holes and we end up
- 15:57Speaker 1: getting down too, and I'm out of the hole on sixteen,
- 16:02Speaker 1: Phil makes a bertie on the par five with the
- 16:04Speaker 1: all the danger around it, um to purse the hole,
- 16:07Speaker 1: so we end up down too, and even that starts
- 16:11Speaker 1: out the press, so whenever we're we have a dormy press.
- 16:15Speaker 1: So if we're two down with two to play, we
- 16:16Speaker 1: get a press. So I hit it close on seventeen
- 16:19Speaker 1: and make a birdie, so now we're one and one,
- 16:21Speaker 1: and then we go to eighteen. I hit it in
- 16:23Speaker 1: the right trees stink fills in the water, and the
- 16:26Speaker 1: other guys are in a decent spot and I'm in
- 16:28Speaker 1: the pine straw over in the trees. It's not a
- 16:31Speaker 1: great spot over there, but I found a gap and
- 16:33Speaker 1: it was kind of a Phil type shot, which I
- 16:36Speaker 1: don't often hit. But I hit this six iron out
- 16:39Speaker 1: of the pine straw through the gap to about three
- 16:42Speaker 1: and a half feet, and Phil went berserk. He was
- 16:45Speaker 1: cheering going down the fairway. He's high five and these
- 16:48Speaker 1: wrapping his arm around, these yelling at the other guys.
- 16:51Speaker 1: And we get up there and now I've got this
- 16:53Speaker 1: three and a half footter that's kind of curling down
- 16:56Speaker 1: the hills where it still's already talking all this trash
- 16:59Speaker 1: like I have to make this spot, so it's maybe
- 17:01Speaker 1: about it nervous that I've ever been on a pot. Uh.
- 17:03Speaker 1: Luckily I made that. Phil can talk all the trash
- 17:06Speaker 1: to the guys, and then he went around and he
- 17:08Speaker 1: was telling everybody about all the great shots that I
- 17:11Speaker 1: hit to finish that match, so that that's one of
- 17:13Speaker 1: the really good stories where I come out on the
- 17:15Speaker 1: good side of it. There there are three blanket that
- 17:17Speaker 1: Phil filled in here. First of all, you guys didn't
- 17:20Speaker 1: play too much with Jamie and Colt in the money game.
- 17:22Speaker 1: They wanted to get into the Tuesday game and Phil
- 17:25Speaker 1: there was a set price for the Tuesday game. It's
- 17:28Speaker 1: a one time press, you know, a price and a press,
- 17:31Speaker 1: and that's what it was. And Phil basically doubled that
- 17:34Speaker 1: number for Jamie and Colt, who didn't know what that
- 17:37Speaker 1: price was, said hey, we got a couple of pigeons.
- 17:39Speaker 1: We're gonna take these guys. The second thing is that
- 17:42Speaker 1: on seventeen I don't know if it's on seventeen TI
- 17:45Speaker 1: or seventeen Green, but Phil walked up to Colts Caddy
- 17:48Speaker 1: and said, hey, man, I'm really sorry about this. At
- 17:51Speaker 1: the time, it's still you know, they're still in the lead,
- 17:53Speaker 1: and the candy turns like, what are you talking about.
- 17:54Speaker 1: It goes, Oh, we're gonna bury this hole, We're gonna
- 17:57Speaker 1: bury the next all. We're gonna win everything, and you
- 18:00Speaker 1: guys gonna be moping around here for the next five days.
- 18:02Speaker 1: And the guy he's like, yeah, okay, whatever, And that's
- 18:05Speaker 1: exactly what happened. The third thing is the way Phil
- 18:07Speaker 1: tells the story. And Phil said he was in the
- 18:09Speaker 1: middle of the fairway on a team, but they says,
- 18:11Speaker 1: all of a sudden, I'm about to hit this shot
- 18:13Speaker 1: tight on eighteen because you know, I've just got it
- 18:15Speaker 1: because my partner's in the trees. Then I see this
- 18:17Speaker 1: ball and it just it flies in like a butterfly,
- 18:21Speaker 1: lands on the green, right next to the hole. My partner,
- 18:24Speaker 1: Brendan Steel, walks out and he walks straight across the
- 18:27Speaker 1: water on a team like Jesus himself, straight onto the green,
- 18:30Speaker 1: taps it in to make Birdie. So we win. Philip
- 18:33Speaker 1: belish to live. Phil tells a way better story than
- 18:36Speaker 1: I do, so I can't keep up with that. I
- 18:38Speaker 1: don't render all of that happening either, but I'm sure
- 18:40Speaker 1: it did. So what is more pressure? Though? Playing against
- 18:43Speaker 1: Phil on a Tuesday when he's trash talking your ear
- 18:46Speaker 1: off and trying to get in your head trying to
- 18:49Speaker 1: close out a tournament on Sunday or trying to win
- 18:53Speaker 1: your card. Well, you know what what's great about these
- 18:57Speaker 1: Tuesday games, and the reason that we like to do them,
- 18:59Speaker 1: is that it's really hard for us to duplicate the
- 19:03Speaker 1: kind of pressure that you feel trying to win a
- 19:05Speaker 1: tournament or trying to get your card, or anytime you
- 19:07Speaker 1: really want it. It's hard for us to do that
- 19:09Speaker 1: if you just go play a casual round, if you
- 19:11Speaker 1: just practicing. So we like to go play and then
- 19:14Speaker 1: see where your game is, you know, like Phil and
- 19:16Speaker 1: I will do that on and off week, will play
- 19:17Speaker 1: on like a Tuesday or Wednesday, see where our game is,
- 19:20Speaker 1: then go work on things for a couple of days
- 19:22Speaker 1: that we didn't like about whatever happened in the round,
- 19:25Speaker 1: and then try to come back and play another match
- 19:27Speaker 1: before we before we leave for the next event, and
- 19:29Speaker 1: see if we've adjusted and made things better. Uh. So
- 19:32Speaker 1: you get a good barometer for for where you are
- 19:34Speaker 1: and what you're trying to do. But I get very
- 19:37Speaker 1: nervous in those games. Originally I got really nervous, and
- 19:40Speaker 1: for a long time, Keegan and I were getting killed.
- 19:42Speaker 1: Phil was killing me when I was at home. And
- 19:45Speaker 1: then I've since gotten more comfortable over the last ten
- 19:47Speaker 1: years and I've been able to do a lot better.
- 19:49Speaker 1: But it's just like anybody playing around the club. If
- 19:52Speaker 1: there's somebody that you really want to beat, maybe it's
- 19:54Speaker 1: your buddy, maybe it's your brother, or maybe it's your dad.
- 19:57Speaker 1: If you want it bad enough, you're gonna be nervous.
- 19:59Speaker 1: You're gonna feel the say same things that we feel
- 20:00Speaker 1: out here, whether it's playing against shill or or playing
- 20:03Speaker 1: to win a tournament. If you want it bad enough,
- 20:05Speaker 1: you get all the same kind of feelings. And that's
- 20:07Speaker 1: what makes it golf really great, and it's what makes
- 20:09Speaker 1: it really hard. Chad, I will tell you a quick
- 20:11Speaker 1: story that Philter told me a few years ago, and
- 20:14Speaker 1: I won't give up this player's name. He still plays
- 20:16Speaker 1: on tour. I actually really like the guy. But he
- 20:18Speaker 1: got into the money game one day on a Tuesday
- 20:20Speaker 1: and Phil it was actually on a Wednesday, I think,
- 20:22Speaker 1: before Major Championship, and Phil said, Okay, we've got We've
- 20:26Speaker 1: got a few guys, let's play four x and the
- 20:28Speaker 1: players that you know, Phil, that's kind of a lot
- 20:30Speaker 1: of money. Can we just play for ten times less instead?
- 20:35Speaker 1: Or five times less? Whatever it was? And Phil kind
- 20:37Speaker 1: of looked at me because, yeah, I guess he goes you.
- 20:39Speaker 1: You understand, like the winning prize at one point eight
- 20:42Speaker 1: million dollars this week, like we're playing for that and
- 20:45Speaker 1: the money game is nothing even close to that. Don't
- 20:48Speaker 1: you want to kind of get those juices falling against
- 20:50Speaker 1: I don't. I don't really like playing for money that much.
- 20:52Speaker 1: Phillis told that story and said, I will never bank
- 20:56Speaker 1: on that guy to go and win a tournament in
- 20:58Speaker 1: the heat of the moment on us Monday afternoon, even
- 21:00Speaker 1: if he's leading down the stretch on the back night,
- 21:03Speaker 1: just because he's thinking about it too much. He's too nervous,
- 21:06Speaker 1: and he's not getting himself into those situations where you're
- 21:09Speaker 1: playing for money and you have something on the line
- 21:11Speaker 1: and you need to go make a shot. I mean,
- 21:13Speaker 1: I think that's a great point. It's also if it's
- 21:15Speaker 1: your own money and you have to physically pull it
- 21:18Speaker 1: out of your pocket and hand it to somebody, it's
- 21:20Speaker 1: different than if it's this kind of like money that's
- 21:23Speaker 1: not yours, and that's gonna be transferred into your bank account,
- 21:26Speaker 1: you know, at a later date. It's people always say, oh,
- 21:29Speaker 1: how do you make a pot for you know, a
- 21:30Speaker 1: hundred grand on tour or something. It's like, well, you
- 21:33Speaker 1: do the best you can. You try to hit the
- 21:35Speaker 1: best pot that you can, and you hope it goes in.
- 21:37Speaker 1: And I've missed plenty for a lot of money, and
- 21:39Speaker 1: I've made some for some money, and you know, you
- 21:41Speaker 1: just it's but it's not actually yours. And when you
- 21:44Speaker 1: actually have to go to the bank and get your
- 21:46Speaker 1: money and then bring it out, you have to hand
- 21:48Speaker 1: it over to one of your friends. It's not very fun.
- 21:50Speaker 1: Sobo was telling me how you've got great games with
- 21:53Speaker 1: like Matthew Stafford and Matt Ryan. It's like, what are
- 21:57Speaker 1: those like? You have to give them strokes. You guys
- 22:00Speaker 1: get to play for steaks, Like will they play you
- 22:02Speaker 1: for steaks? Yeah? So we play, I mean we play
- 22:05Speaker 1: just kind of fun games. We like to get team
- 22:07Speaker 1: games going. We've got a really good group at at
- 22:09Speaker 1: Shady Canyon at my club. Matt Ryan and Matt Stafford
- 22:12Speaker 1: joined last year. Geoffrey Loopol, who played for the Maple
- 22:16Speaker 1: leaves for a long time. Is a good buddy of mine?
- 22:18Speaker 1: Um are they? Buddy? Eric is friends with all those guys,
- 22:21Speaker 1: so we kind of get this group together. Joel class
- 22:23Speaker 1: that does the football for Fox on Saturdays for college football. Um,
- 22:28Speaker 1: all these guys love golf, and so yeah, everybody gets
- 22:31Speaker 1: their socks. You know, I played a plus six at home,
- 22:34Speaker 1: and everybody gets as many shots as they as their
- 22:38Speaker 1: handicapped dictates. And and we'll go out and play a
- 22:41Speaker 1: lot of team games and talk some trash and you
- 22:43Speaker 1: know those are normally pretty low stakes, but they're just
- 22:45Speaker 1: more for bragging rights than to have a fun game.
- 22:48Speaker 1: Who's all right? So this is good? This is good.
- 22:51Speaker 1: Which one are those guys? Is coolest under pressure when
- 22:56Speaker 1: there's a put that has to be made? Of those guys, well,
- 23:00Speaker 1: Matt Ryan and Joel Klatt are both really good putters.
- 23:04Speaker 1: Both really like to have puts to to win matches
- 23:07Speaker 1: or to you know, win a hole. So those two
- 23:10Speaker 1: guys are are very good. I would say Joel clasts
- 23:13Speaker 1: the best putter in the club. He's for some reason
- 23:17Speaker 1: just got it kind of kind of nailed. So uh,
- 23:19Speaker 1: probably a little nod to Joel, but Matt Ryan right
- 23:22Speaker 1: behind him. What is the best forcing you've ever played with?
- 23:25Speaker 1: It's probably in these games that I'm that I'm having
- 23:28Speaker 1: most recently, you know, with with Matt Ryan, Matthew Stafford,
- 23:32Speaker 1: Um some games with Film. I've played with Film with
- 23:34Speaker 1: the team of Salani before, which is pretty awesome. You know,
- 23:37Speaker 1: when you can get these kind of guys that are
- 23:39Speaker 1: huge in other sports and they love to play golf
- 23:41Speaker 1: to come play with you and they're so super excited,
- 23:43Speaker 1: that's that's pretty great. I'm a huge King fan, l
- 23:46Speaker 1: a King. So I've had co Pitar, Dowdy and Muzlin
- 23:49Speaker 1: out one day together a couple of times actually, so
- 23:52Speaker 1: so that's pretty awesome for me. I've gotten to do
- 23:54Speaker 1: a lot of really great stuff. There's just there's so
- 23:56Speaker 1: many good guys that love to play golf. Um had
- 23:59Speaker 1: a couple of star groups, which is actually kind of
- 24:02Speaker 1: through SOBL as well. I met Dave Farrell, who is
- 24:05Speaker 1: the fist player for Lincoln Park through through SOBOL and
- 24:07Speaker 1: then he's introduced me to some of his other rock
- 24:09Speaker 1: star friends. So played with them, Shadows from Evenge seven
- 24:13Speaker 1: Fold and Trey Cool, the drummer for Green Day. It's
- 24:16Speaker 1: really been a pretty awesome sport to be a part of.
- 24:19Speaker 1: And I don't know that I could narrow it down
- 24:20Speaker 1: to one, but there's been a lot of great stuff.
- 24:22Speaker 1: I got one more segment I want to do, but
- 24:24Speaker 1: before we get to the last segment, how miserable is
- 24:28Speaker 1: betting hockey? It's so miserable. I was talking about this
- 24:33Speaker 1: this morning because my buddy John Current and I were
- 24:36Speaker 1: talking about how bad our numbers are on on Action
- 24:39Speaker 1: Network with betting hockey, and we're trying to figure out
- 24:41Speaker 1: what we're gonna do. He's gonna research today and try
- 24:43Speaker 1: to figure out what our strategy should actually be. But
- 24:46Speaker 1: it's my favorite support. I followed the closer than anything,
- 24:49Speaker 1: and I'm terrible at it. It's by the way, Chad,
- 24:51Speaker 1: you can tell, and people listening can tell that Steely
- 24:54Speaker 1: and I are friends. We talk a lot. I would
- 24:56Speaker 1: say like point three percent of our conversations are a
- 25:00Speaker 1: about golf, and seventies seven percent of our conversations are
- 25:03Speaker 1: about hockey. I mean, we're talking about hockey, We're talking
- 25:06Speaker 1: about fantasy football, like all the time, trying to figure
- 25:09Speaker 1: stuff out, and we're just banging our head against the wall.
- 25:11Speaker 1: All of the listen We've been doing a show on
- 25:15Speaker 1: Twitter called the twenty Action Network Hockey Betting Show because uh,
- 25:20Speaker 1: I won't bet more than twenty dollars on hockey because
- 25:22Speaker 1: it seems like a miserable thing. And we will have
- 25:24Speaker 1: two of our hockey anal as Mike Leeboff and shown
- 25:26Speaker 1: a realo joined me on the show and explain to
- 25:28Speaker 1: me what bet I should make that night from whatever
- 25:31Speaker 1: the slate is usually on Thursdays, and inevitably it ends
- 25:35Speaker 1: up being like the Detroit Red Rings plus one three,
- 25:40Speaker 1: And I swear to god we're gonna do it again
- 25:42Speaker 1: on Thursday, and Mike Leeboff is gonna tell me to
- 25:45Speaker 1: make a horrible, horrible hockey better. And if you look
- 25:47Speaker 1: at his his record in the Action Network gap, he's
- 25:49Speaker 1: probably like at a winning percentage of three seventy, but
- 25:55Speaker 1: he's up probably a hundred and fifty units because all
- 25:59Speaker 1: he does is hockey underdogs, which makes for a miserable, miserable,
- 26:04Speaker 1: horrible life. It really does. And I follow him very closely,
- 26:09Speaker 1: and it's the way that you have to do it
- 26:11Speaker 1: in order to win, because there's too much flock and
- 26:13Speaker 1: too much chaos going on out there. But it's not fun,
- 26:17Speaker 1: and you have to do it every day. You'd have
- 26:19Speaker 1: to take the dogs every day and just keep wlacking
- 26:22Speaker 1: where you think there's value and just hoping that that
- 26:25Speaker 1: it turns out good for you in the end. But
- 26:27Speaker 1: it is a miserable way to do it. Do you
- 26:30Speaker 1: keep up with it on tour? Like? Are you watching
- 26:32Speaker 1: hockey every night when you're done with you around or
- 26:34Speaker 1: like hanging out before you go into before the next day. Yeah,
- 26:37Speaker 1: I'm trying to watch hockey as much as I can,
- 26:39Speaker 1: and right now I'm I'm doing a lot better with
- 26:41Speaker 1: college basketball, so I'm watching a little bit more of that.
- 26:44Speaker 1: That's probably the sport I know least about, so that's
- 26:46Speaker 1: why I'm doing better. You were a huge hockey player
- 26:48Speaker 1: growing up, right, Like, wasn't that your original sport? No?
- 26:51Speaker 1: I didn't play any hockey, um, just baseball and soccer
- 26:54Speaker 1: growing up. That's a good question, though, Chad, to get
- 26:58Speaker 1: this far into the pod with it before you ask
- 27:00Speaker 1: question that you know I wasn't relevant at all. No,
- 27:02Speaker 1: I swear to god, I was doing the research and
- 27:04Speaker 1: I feel like on the On the Mark podcast he
- 27:07Speaker 1: mentioned that he played hockey growing up, and maybe I
- 27:10Speaker 1: just misheard it, and he said he loves hockey growing up.
- 27:13Speaker 1: I got it wrong. Listen, it's fine. I do research
- 27:17Speaker 1: Winnipeg bets when he was like eight years old. And
- 27:20Speaker 1: that's how we got into the seriously, all right, before
- 27:24Speaker 1: we get to our last segment, before we get to
- 27:27Speaker 1: another thing, I want to bring back our podcast producer,
- 27:31Speaker 1: Mr Matt Mitchell, who has another brilliant segment extolling the
- 27:35Speaker 1: virtues of daytime gambling, this time with a very special guest. Hey,
- 27:39Speaker 1: thanks a lot, Chad. I'm actually hanging out today at
- 27:42Speaker 1: a barbecue at the house of one of my dearest friends,
- 27:46Speaker 1: actor and typewriter enthusiast Tom Hanks. Tom, Tom, Tom, What
- 27:54Speaker 1: is it? What you're finish the hamburgers? I supposed to do?
- 28:00Speaker 1: Maga and Margarita. Well, whoa, whoa, whoa, settled down, settle down,
- 28:03Speaker 1: it's me. It's me. It's your uncle, Mitch. I love you, man,
- 28:06Speaker 1: you love me. I love you too. I gotta go wait, wait, wait, wait,
- 28:10Speaker 1: come back, come back. I know you're you know, sad,
- 28:12Speaker 1: because I said the movie Apollo thirteen totally sucks. But
- 28:15Speaker 1: I've got the perfect way to cheer your right up. Alright, alright, alright,
- 28:19Speaker 1: you tell me what I'm supposed to do. You tell
- 28:21Speaker 1: me what am I supposed to do. Let's gamble in
- 28:24Speaker 1: the afternoon. That's good. I'm relieved. That's great. I'm saved.
- 28:30Speaker 1: But still right. You think there's some kind of horrible catch,
- 28:33Speaker 1: but there's not, because we can bet on some old
- 28:36Speaker 1: guys in Newport Beach playing golf. I've got to do it.
- 28:41Speaker 1: I gotta be brave, I gotta jump in with both feet. Yes,
- 28:45Speaker 1: but why are you so sure? Because I have wasted
- 28:48Speaker 1: my entire life and I'm gonna die now. I have
- 28:51Speaker 1: a chance to die like a man, and I'm gonna
- 28:52Speaker 1: take it. I've got to take it. I was thinking
- 28:55Speaker 1: the exact same thing. I was talking with our golf
- 28:58Speaker 1: expert Josh Perry, and he Australian golfer Rod Pampling this
- 29:02Speaker 1: week on the PGA Tour Champions the Senior Tour. So
- 29:05Speaker 1: we're gonna take Pampling in his first round matchup Thursday
- 29:08Speaker 1: with Robert Carlson, who looks like an aging Swedish superhero.
- 29:13Speaker 1: But the Pampling is good enough for Josh Perry, He's
- 29:15Speaker 1: good enough for us, right, Tom, I don't care, and
- 29:18Speaker 1: it means nothing to me. It's just a name. That's
- 29:21Speaker 1: my mission. It is our mission. Daytime gambling is always
- 29:25Speaker 1: the mission. That's right. I'm glad you agree. Well, my manager,
- 29:28Speaker 1: Chad Noman, actually said that betting during the day made
- 29:31Speaker 1: me a shitty producer. Oh yeah, great, that it's funny
- 29:36Speaker 1: to you. I had to sneak off into the bathroom
- 29:38Speaker 1: and have a good cry. My manager called me, I
- 29:41Speaker 1: talk and find him a pig ship and did I cry?
- 29:44Speaker 1: Oh now, you're Mr. Tough guy. Well you wouldn't act
- 29:47Speaker 1: so tough if you saw that nude selfie Chad was
- 29:49Speaker 1: senting around last week. I saw it, and it's scared
- 29:52Speaker 1: the ship out of me. It's ship out of every
- 29:54Speaker 1: man in America. Oh yeah, it sounds like you definitely
- 29:57Speaker 1: saw it. Well, I'm delighted that you'll love be joining
- 30:00Speaker 1: me here on this little afternoon gambling adventure because I've
- 30:02Speaker 1: always been a little suspicious of any you know, paranoid
- 30:05Speaker 1: lunatic could rather work all day than make a bat.
- 30:08Speaker 1: So you're welcome. Tom God, you don't know when to
- 30:11Speaker 1: quit doing. Look at me. I'm a shot off a
- 30:14Speaker 1: man because of you. We're the ones who lighting fires
- 30:20Speaker 1: we're are the ones where I think suspicious, that paradoise
- 30:22Speaker 1: where the load of us. Maybe you're right, but we'll
- 30:26Speaker 1: get rich pretty soon. Betton Royals Day games all year round,
- 30:29Speaker 1: so don't worry. Tom. Yes, back to you, Chad. Alright,
- 30:36Speaker 1: our last segment. Let's get to another thing, another thing.
- 30:43Speaker 1: So well, you had a great anecdote in your story
- 30:45Speaker 1: coming out of the Hound of Classic this weekend, in
- 30:48Speaker 1: which you were trailing Brendan the whole time and he
- 30:50Speaker 1: told you something really cool just as the round was starting,
- 30:54Speaker 1: set it up, and then let Brendan finishing. So the
- 30:56Speaker 1: whole story is that I brought a buddy. We have
- 30:59Speaker 1: a d f S open this past week in a
- 31:01Speaker 1: buddy of mine that I play a lot of golf with,
- 31:03Speaker 1: also named Jason S. I got some tickets through Steely
- 31:06Speaker 1: and I text my buddy said, hey, you're all set
- 31:08Speaker 1: with tickets. Will be good. He texts back thirty seconds
- 31:10Speaker 1: later a screenshot putting a hundred bucks on steel at
- 31:13Speaker 1: a hundred to one, and you know, that's a good
- 31:15Speaker 1: little payday. And all of a sudden he gets into
- 31:17Speaker 1: contention and now it's like, all right, let's go. We
- 31:19Speaker 1: gott a weekend sweat, and so we're very invested in
- 31:23Speaker 1: what steal. I'm always invest in what Steel is doing.
- 31:25Speaker 1: But in any case, I'm following him during the final
- 31:28Speaker 1: round and he's playing with Tommy Fleetwood and last pairing
- 31:30Speaker 1: down by one stroke going into uh the last day,
- 31:34Speaker 1: and Tommy goes out and Bertie's the first and Bertie's
- 31:37Speaker 1: the second, and we get to the third tea and
- 31:39Speaker 1: I don't want to make it sound like, you know,
- 31:41Speaker 1: like yes, I'm rooting for Steel. It's a weird situation
- 31:45Speaker 1: where I'm a journalist. I'm standing there, I'm just watching.
- 31:48Speaker 1: I'm not trying to create any sort of environment where
- 31:51Speaker 1: I you know, I want one to win over the
- 31:53Speaker 1: others and that. But I also know that I've been
- 31:55Speaker 1: out there enough with him that I know what to
- 31:58Speaker 1: say to you in certain situations. And you made a
- 32:00Speaker 1: couple of bars. Wasn't bad, But you know, you're twenty
- 32:03Speaker 1: minutes and you're down three after being down one, and
- 32:06Speaker 1: so basically I turned you. Walking off to Green, I said,
- 32:09Speaker 1: you know, stamp coasts out six eight weeks, so oh really,
- 32:12Speaker 1: And we started talking hockey for a minute. And we're
- 32:14Speaker 1: still waiting on the tea box for five minutes till
- 32:16Speaker 1: a couple of other stories we can't tell, and then
- 32:19Speaker 1: he said, hey, do you want to know my strategy
- 32:20Speaker 1: for today? Sure, if you want to divulge it right
- 32:23Speaker 1: here on the tea box. And so the strategy was,
- 32:26Speaker 1: since I was down three already, I was gonna try
- 32:30Speaker 1: to be patient, try to do the fill thing, try
- 32:32Speaker 1: to wait back. And I knew that the golf course
- 32:34Speaker 1: was so difficult that it was very unlikely that Tommy
- 32:38Speaker 1: was going to go shoot six under par and just
- 32:40Speaker 1: run away and win the tournament. And if he did,
- 32:41Speaker 1: that's fine, Like if I can't match that, I can't
- 32:43Speaker 1: match it. But I wanted to have a chance on
- 32:47Speaker 1: the last few holes that have water everywhere and talor
- 32:50Speaker 1: and things go on nuts, that I could make a
- 32:53Speaker 1: couple of good swings that could flip it and give
- 32:55Speaker 1: me a chance to win. So I just wanted to
- 32:57Speaker 1: be within striking distance once we got to the last
- 32:59Speaker 1: three or four holes, and as Sobel said to me later,
- 33:02Speaker 1: it unfortunately it happened a little too quick, because I
- 33:06Speaker 1: ended up tied for the lead after like six or seven.
- 33:09Speaker 1: So it flipped around where I was tied to the
- 33:11Speaker 1: lead pretty quick, and then I was kind of just
- 33:13Speaker 1: hanging on, hanging on, and then I had a chance
- 33:16Speaker 1: on the last three holes and I just didn't quite
- 33:18Speaker 1: I wasn't quite able to count. So the strategy worked
- 33:21Speaker 1: until I didn't hit the shots right at the end.
- 33:23Speaker 1: But there was also a great anecdote from the story.
- 33:25Speaker 1: Sobel wrote about in those last few holes sort of
- 33:29Speaker 1: an approach that you took when you were making sort
- 33:32Speaker 1: of a shot that you felt like you you had
- 33:33Speaker 1: to make explain like the mental process and what that
- 33:37Speaker 1: shot was. Yeah, so on on eighteen, you need to
- 33:40Speaker 1: make an eagle to get into a playoffs. Sunday MS
- 33:42Speaker 1: already in at six under. On at four under, the
- 33:45Speaker 1: pin stuck pretty far right, there's water on the right.
- 33:48Speaker 1: I don't really have a club that can end up
- 33:50Speaker 1: in a good spot for that that shot. Just with
- 33:52Speaker 1: the distance that I had and everything, I would all
- 33:54Speaker 1: like to be a lot further back or a lot closer.
- 33:57Speaker 1: And so I was talking to my caddy and I
- 33:58Speaker 1: was like, well, I know I can hit this shot,
- 34:01Speaker 1: It's just obviously very risky. And uh. We decided that
- 34:05Speaker 1: you don't get a chance to win golf tournaments very often,
- 34:08Speaker 1: and we needed to try to get it up there
- 34:09Speaker 1: somewhere to where we could maybe hold a chip or
- 34:11Speaker 1: a bunker shot or something. So I hit this slap
- 34:14Speaker 1: slice three wood, trying to get take probably twenty yards
- 34:18Speaker 1: off my three wood and get it moving towards the flag.
- 34:21Speaker 1: I pulled it off, except it started a little too
- 34:23Speaker 1: far right in one of the water. See what's amazing
- 34:26Speaker 1: to me? So like in that moment, you're thinking it's
- 34:29Speaker 1: better to risk coming in, Say you came in fourth
- 34:33Speaker 1: I think in the tournament, right, so it's better to
- 34:35Speaker 1: risk coming in fourth, fifth, whatever, then taking the safe
- 34:40Speaker 1: fruit and guaranteeing maybe you're gonna come in second or third. Yeah,
- 34:44Speaker 1: as it turned out, a part would have given me third,
- 34:46Speaker 1: and a birdie would have given me second time for second.
- 34:49Speaker 1: But you know, you just don't get that many chances
- 34:52Speaker 1: out here to try to win, especially on the last whole.
- 34:54Speaker 1: I mean, you're normally, if you're going to finish fourth
- 34:57Speaker 1: or fifth, a lot of the time you're four five
- 35:00Speaker 1: shops back. So for me to finish fourth and and
- 35:03Speaker 1: have that chance on eighteen, it was too good an
- 35:06Speaker 1: opportunity to pass up. And and I've I've gotten off
- 35:09Speaker 1: to a good start this year. Um, I lost in
- 35:11Speaker 1: a playoff at Sony, so I don't have to worry
- 35:14Speaker 1: about keeping my card or anything like that. So we
- 35:16Speaker 1: were just like, we're going for the goose, so we're
- 35:18Speaker 1: trying to get those wins. That's what's really important about her. God,
- 35:22Speaker 1: that must matter so much to know that you have
- 35:25Speaker 1: your card. You're kind of playing with house money a
- 35:27Speaker 1: little bit. Yeah for sure. I mean it ended up
- 35:30Speaker 1: costing me world ranking points, CADEX cup points, my you know,
- 35:33Speaker 1: all these different things. But I've gotten so many messages
- 35:37Speaker 1: from friends and people watching me that are saying, I'm
- 35:40Speaker 1: so glad you tried to hit that shot. Even my
- 35:42Speaker 1: wife said afterwards, she was like, I'm so glad you
- 35:45Speaker 1: tried to hit because you just you just want to
- 35:48Speaker 1: give yourself an opportunity. And and I think all my
- 35:52Speaker 1: friends and stuff, they're just telling me that they're they're happy,
- 35:54Speaker 1: because that means that I'm confident and relaxed and like
- 35:58Speaker 1: going for it rather than just playing it. Say, Chad,
- 36:00Speaker 1: let me tell you about and we always talk about
- 36:03Speaker 1: all sports being games of inches, and you know, hey,
- 36:05Speaker 1: just a little thing goes wrong here, a little thing
- 36:07Speaker 1: goes right there, and make all the difference. I mean,
- 36:10Speaker 1: I've for a long time talked about sort of the
- 36:12Speaker 1: domino and effect in golf. I mean, you can make
- 36:15Speaker 1: one more put in March and then come in one
- 36:19Speaker 1: instead of one twenty six at the end of the
- 36:21Speaker 1: year and keep your car, and then the next year
- 36:23Speaker 1: you win instead of being on the corn Ferry Tour
- 36:26Speaker 1: or something like that. I can tell you a story
- 36:28Speaker 1: that the only other player I've caddied for professionally Roland,
- 36:31Speaker 1: Thatchers like did Getty stealing in one round like caddy
- 36:34Speaker 1: the tournament for rolling Thatcher back when he was playing
- 36:36Speaker 1: the web dot com when it was still called that
- 36:38Speaker 1: and Roland got got to the PJA Tour is a
- 36:40Speaker 1: good player. The year that Mark Leishman won in Connecticut
- 36:44Speaker 1: was probably about eight nine, ten years ago something like that.
- 36:46Speaker 1: And rolling out a chance you need to make Bertie
- 36:49Speaker 1: on eighteen and I swear I was standing out there
- 36:51Speaker 1: about a hundred and fifty yards in and I'm saying,
- 36:53Speaker 1: about halfway between him and the green, and he hits
- 36:56Speaker 1: it and a gust of wind picks up right as
- 36:59Speaker 1: he's swing it knocks his ball into the front bunker. Well,
- 37:01Speaker 1: now he still needs to make a birdie to force
- 37:04Speaker 1: a playoff, and so he gets really aggressive with the
- 37:06Speaker 1: bunker shot. It skips away, past, goes twenty ft past.
- 37:10Speaker 1: Now he two butts. He makes bogey instead of hey,
- 37:13Speaker 1: just go down there and make a bar. He finished
- 37:15Speaker 1: in second place, keeps his card, makes lots of money,
- 37:18Speaker 1: he's happy. Instead he fished the shriff. I believe it
- 37:20Speaker 1: was third or fourth place, basic on the fact that
- 37:22Speaker 1: he made bogey and was aggressive and went for it
- 37:24Speaker 1: as well he should have with a tournament on the line.
- 37:27Speaker 1: Lost his card that year. I'm not sure he ever
- 37:29Speaker 1: got it back, and if he did, he didn't get
- 37:31Speaker 1: it back for very long. I mean literally, it was
- 37:34Speaker 1: a breath of wind that hit his ball in the
- 37:35Speaker 1: air that can make all the difference. That story makes
- 37:39Speaker 1: me sit to my stomach. There are so many parallels
- 37:41Speaker 1: between professional golf and gambling. Do I take a chance
- 37:45Speaker 1: and hope that it comes up, or do I do
- 37:47Speaker 1: I play it safe and not go for it. That's
- 37:50Speaker 1: golf and that's gambling. That's Tim Cup. Absolutely, you know,
- 37:55Speaker 1: going back to the beginning, Jason says, you know you're
- 37:58Speaker 1: coddled and whatever, but and that golfers have it easier
- 38:01Speaker 1: than other athletes. I don't think so, because everyone always
- 38:04Speaker 1: forgets that, Like golfers have to pay for everything. Yeah,
- 38:07Speaker 1: you get sponsors and things like that, but you have
- 38:10Speaker 1: to be paying for your house, and you're paying for
- 38:11Speaker 1: your travel, you're paying for your coaches. There's an entire
- 38:15Speaker 1: network that exists based on you going out and winning,
- 38:18Speaker 1: and you have to keep playing for your card every year.
- 38:21Speaker 1: All of it is again, but the fact that, like
- 38:23Speaker 1: you're the only one remaining from your buddies who are
- 38:25Speaker 1: playing in the Canadian Tour and the fact that you're
- 38:28Speaker 1: willing to go for it, you know, on a what
- 38:30Speaker 1: needs to be the most exquisite shot you're gonna shoot
- 38:33Speaker 1: over a four day tournament, is why you're still playing,
- 38:35Speaker 1: I would think. Yeah. I mean, it's also a true meritocracy.
- 38:38Speaker 1: It's not subjective at all. It's what sword did you
- 38:41Speaker 1: shoot and that's how much money you'll get paid or not.
- 38:43Speaker 1: So this is not any let's sign sign a contract
- 38:47Speaker 1: with the PGA Tour to make ten million this year.
- 38:49Speaker 1: It's you can go out and win the FedEx Cup
- 38:51Speaker 1: and win ten million, but you may play bad and
- 38:54Speaker 1: not make anything. It's all up to you. Brenda was
- 38:57Speaker 1: probably gonna make it on tour no matter what he
- 38:58Speaker 1: had the talent, I would say the the highest level.
- 39:01Speaker 1: At some point, you catch that break. You kind of
- 39:04Speaker 1: make your own luck. You catch a break and you
- 39:06Speaker 1: move up just because you're good enough. I play with
- 39:08Speaker 1: pros all the time, and they're varying levels of professionals,
- 39:11Speaker 1: And I don't think a lot of non golf fans
- 39:13Speaker 1: realized just how many different levels of professional golfers there are.
- 39:16Speaker 1: But I play with guys who are playing Moonlight Tour
- 39:18Speaker 1: events throughout Florida and playing like one day ors and
- 39:21Speaker 1: two days and just trying to cash a check somewhere
- 39:24Speaker 1: so they can go play again somewhere else. I mean,
- 39:27Speaker 1: they're they're really living check to check in tournament to tournament.
- 39:31Speaker 1: And the difference between one of those guys the guy
- 39:33Speaker 1: playing let's say the Corn Ferry Tour, which is basically
- 39:36Speaker 1: Triple A Baseball for the p g A Tour, the
- 39:39Speaker 1: difference is not that one guy is so much better
- 39:43Speaker 1: than the other guy. It's just that he played better
- 39:45Speaker 1: at the right time, he caught some breaks, he got
- 39:47Speaker 1: a little bit luckier. I mean, that's basically the game.
- 39:50Speaker 1: You could say that probably about any other sport as well,
- 39:53Speaker 1: but it really is that way a golf Brandon. Here's
- 39:56Speaker 1: what I think. I don't know what Phil Nicholson likes
- 39:58Speaker 1: to gamble at all. There's not really anything written about that.
- 40:01Speaker 1: But I will say that the story Sobel told earlier
- 40:06Speaker 1: in the day about Phil sort of playing with a
- 40:08Speaker 1: guy on Tuesday who wouldn't up the stakes because he
- 40:10Speaker 1: didn't like to play for money, it's obvious why he
- 40:13Speaker 1: likes to play with you on the Tuesday games, because
- 40:16Speaker 1: you got balls and you're going for it. That's what
- 40:18Speaker 1: I would say. Nice work, well, thank you, I appreciate it.
- 40:22Speaker 1: But I mean everything that Phil does, you can see it.
- 40:25Speaker 1: The way he plays. He plays to win. He takes
- 40:27Speaker 1: on all the risk. That's the way he's always done it.
- 40:29Speaker 1: That's why he's so popular out here, and that's why
- 40:31Speaker 1: he's won so much. So he's gonna have his failures.
- 40:33Speaker 1: He's gonna have times when he doesn't pull the shot off,
- 40:35Speaker 1: but he always gives himself that chance to hit the shot,
- 40:38Speaker 1: like on thirteen at Dagasta. You know that's always going
- 40:41Speaker 1: to be in his d n A. And I've tried
- 40:43Speaker 1: to learn from that as much as I can, but
- 40:45Speaker 1: it's difficult. Also, you've got huge balls just for coming
- 40:48Speaker 1: on this podcast. It's always a risky proposition, very risky.
- 40:52Speaker 1: Brendan Steele, Jason Sobel, thanks so much for coming on, guys,
- 40:56Speaker 1: Thank you all right, as promised. Up next on the
- 41:00Speaker 1: Favorites podcast, Social Media sensation comedy impression genius Joey Molinaro
- 41:07Speaker 1: is on the phone right now. Joey, you have had
- 41:11Speaker 1: a whirlwind, if i'd say, a month, where you are
- 41:15Speaker 1: racking up these kind of views for doing impressions of
- 41:19Speaker 1: everything from famous guys in sports, funny videos. Tell people
- 41:25Speaker 1: how this started for you? Really? Well, thanks for having
- 41:28Speaker 1: me to chats NICs to to talk to you, you
- 41:31Speaker 1: know here after you're connecting for a while. But um, really,
- 41:34Speaker 1: I've been doing this for a long time in terms
- 41:36Speaker 1: of making funny videos and doing skits, and I've been
- 41:41Speaker 1: doing it for at least three years kind of publicly
- 41:43Speaker 1: trying to build some things, um and then impersonations. I've
- 41:46Speaker 1: been doing them since I was a kid. Now they
- 41:49Speaker 1: weren't of well known people or public figures, but I've
- 41:53Speaker 1: been known as somebody who you know would get the
- 41:56Speaker 1: knocked down for doing voices and and and things like
- 42:00Speaker 1: that for a long time. So really, um, you know,
- 42:02Speaker 1: in the last six months seven months, but like you said,
- 42:04Speaker 1: especially since they started the calendar year in, everything's just
- 42:08Speaker 1: really started to pick up. So you live in Indie.
- 42:11Speaker 1: We've talked about this. I'm gonna eye you, Alum. So
- 42:13Speaker 1: I always get excited when, like, I'm talking to someone
- 42:15Speaker 1: who's making good from the state of Indiana. What do
- 42:18Speaker 1: you do in Indie? Tell people what you do? Yes,
- 42:21Speaker 1: My day job is I work for UM one of
- 42:24Speaker 1: seven five the fan in Indianapolis. It's our ESPN affiliate
- 42:27Speaker 1: here in town. So it's like where the home of
- 42:30Speaker 1: the Pacers and the Colts, you know. We have UM
- 42:32Speaker 1: weekday talk shows. I host a weekend show on that station.
- 42:36Speaker 1: But then during the week I'm just writing for the website,
- 42:39Speaker 1: doing social media posts. Not have a weekly YouTube series
- 42:43Speaker 1: that I do here. So that's the day job that
- 42:46Speaker 1: you know, keeps keeps the roof over the head, as
- 42:49Speaker 1: they say, and you make a lot of fun. I'm
- 42:51Speaker 1: starting to now, Yeah, we're on good terms. He likes me,
- 42:56Speaker 1: you know, he can be a tough cookie to crack,
- 42:58Speaker 1: so UM and now I can have a little bit
- 42:59Speaker 1: of fun with them. Yeah, so when you started doing this,
- 43:03Speaker 1: what was people's response when you started doing some of
- 43:07Speaker 1: the bigger names impressions? Mostly good people enjoy them and
- 43:11Speaker 1: have fun with them, and um, you know, that's what
- 43:13Speaker 1: I'm out to do, is just make people laugh. And
- 43:15Speaker 1: I don't ever try to do impressions that you make
- 43:17Speaker 1: people look bad or put them in a bad light.
- 43:20Speaker 1: You know. I just like to have fun with it.
- 43:21Speaker 1: I just like to do kind of a sketch comedy
- 43:23Speaker 1: feel with it. And I haven't really had too much
- 43:25Speaker 1: negative feedback. You know. If I do have negative feedback,
- 43:27Speaker 1: it's from a fan base that maybe is upset about
- 43:30Speaker 1: other things involving their team, but then they just kind
- 43:33Speaker 1: of lash out and take it out on me. But
- 43:35Speaker 1: actually interviewed, uh, you know, Nick Saban is one of
- 43:38Speaker 1: the guys that I that I do and I've been
- 43:39Speaker 1: known to do. I interviewed his daughter on my my
- 43:43Speaker 1: show here this week and was just trying to you know,
- 43:46Speaker 1: if I can't get coach Saban to get his daughter
- 43:48Speaker 1: and he kind of talk about that. So, Yeah, it's
- 43:50Speaker 1: been fun. So what's happened that since like the beginning
- 43:53Speaker 1: of the year that you think made this blow up
- 43:55Speaker 1: a little bit. I don't know. I think that, um,
- 43:59Speaker 1: you know, give myself alot credit. I think that the
- 44:02Speaker 1: reason that they do so well so often is because
- 44:06Speaker 1: I want to try to impersonate or capture people that
- 44:09Speaker 1: haven't been impersonated or captured that much, right, you know,
- 44:13Speaker 1: I mean Frank Calion. Though he's been great to me,
- 44:16Speaker 1: he's a definitely a huge influence. Like now I consider
- 44:19Speaker 1: him a mentor and a friend, but he's nailed down
- 44:22Speaker 1: a lot of people that now anytime that somebody does
- 44:25Speaker 1: an impression of those people, say John Gruden or say
- 44:29Speaker 1: I mean John Madnya. I mean, there's so many people
- 44:31Speaker 1: kind of think of him. So I think that's one
- 44:33Speaker 1: thing is I've tried to do people that haven't necessarily
- 44:36Speaker 1: been been impersonated too often. And then I think another
- 44:39Speaker 1: thing is the situations that I put them in a
- 44:41Speaker 1: right So Nick Salmon talking to his daughter about math,
- 44:44Speaker 1: there's automatically comedy built in there. Then the impression on
- 44:48Speaker 1: top of it is just kind of a bonus at
- 44:50Speaker 1: that point, and I think that that recipe has has
- 44:53Speaker 1: really done well. And then the fact that you know,
- 44:55Speaker 1: I tried to take pride in not just doing impressions.
- 44:57Speaker 1: You know, I tried to put out regular skits and
- 45:00Speaker 1: videos that are just different characters that I come up with.
- 45:03Speaker 1: There are are different skits that don't have anything to
- 45:05Speaker 1: do with impressions. Yeah. Well, that's what I was gonna say,
- 45:08Speaker 1: is like, some of the things that have really blown
- 45:09Speaker 1: up have been the video of you coming out and
- 45:13Speaker 1: you've got your comedy partner doing an interview with you
- 45:17Speaker 1: in the middle of like classes, right, which is just
- 45:20Speaker 1: hilariously funny because I think about what one of my
- 45:22Speaker 1: you know, one of my kids in high school, and
- 45:24Speaker 1: the way you describe sort of getting energy from the
- 45:26Speaker 1: kids and later in the day is just freaking hilarious.
- 45:29Speaker 1: Thank you. Yeah, that's what I stripped for, is just
- 45:31Speaker 1: trying to be as creative as possible. I have as
- 45:33Speaker 1: much fun but as I can. You know, I always
- 45:35Speaker 1: say no offense to my mom, but like she you know,
- 45:37Speaker 1: she doesn't like the Beatles, right, so in my mind,
- 45:40Speaker 1: and Mike who doesn't like the Beatles, right, So there's
- 45:42Speaker 1: there's always going to be people out there have negative
- 45:44Speaker 1: things to say. But for the most part, you know,
- 45:47Speaker 1: it's been great, and so we've talked a little bit
- 45:49Speaker 1: about you know, you're from Indie and you're a sports fan,
- 45:53Speaker 1: you know your way around betting a little bit. Obviously
- 45:55Speaker 1: sports betting becoming more and more popular. Obviously sports betting
- 45:58Speaker 1: not legal in Indiana. We had talked about you doing
- 46:02Speaker 1: an impression of like Gus Johnson when all of a
- 46:06Speaker 1: sudden the game that he's broadcasting, it's really about who's
- 46:10Speaker 1: gonna cover or whether or not the total is gonna
- 46:12Speaker 1: go over the spread, and what that looks like if
- 46:15Speaker 1: there's like three minutes left and he's super excited and
- 46:19Speaker 1: it has nothing to do with the way the game ends,
- 46:21Speaker 1: it's just about covering the total for sure. We want
- 46:24Speaker 1: to give him a shot. Let's give it a shot, man,
- 46:26Speaker 1: Let's have Gus set the scene. Let's see what happens.
- 46:28Speaker 1: This is a brand new experiment. We've never tried this
- 46:30Speaker 1: before in the favorite, so I don't really know how
- 46:32Speaker 1: to do it. So let's see if like you can
- 46:34Speaker 1: set the scene and the boiler makerself a rivalry contest
- 46:45Speaker 1: on flock sports one, here comes the Hostess, sixty seven
- 46:51Speaker 1: three and a half minutes left to play the ober
- 46:54Speaker 1: set at one board. Joey Bronk inside, they missed. Here
- 47:00Speaker 1: comes no Cell Eastern Eastern going east to west west coast,
- 47:06Speaker 1: coming no Cell Eastern. I got it, in got it,
- 47:11Speaker 1: he got it. Sixty nine six D eight boilers with
- 47:15Speaker 1: the League Assembly whole rocking. Ha. Here come the Hosers,
- 47:21Speaker 1: No Ho Ho Hosers, rocking and socking on the home floor.
- 47:26Speaker 1: Robert Fantasy fantasy shaking bacon looking like Talladega nice shaking
- 47:32Speaker 1: bacon fantasy for the three. Oh god it that's the offer.
- 47:39Speaker 1: Three minutes left. But I'm slim play hole and you're
- 47:45Speaker 1: going home making money. I'm just Jopson. Oh my god.
- 47:51Speaker 1: That was just brilliant. That was brilliant. I'm ready to
- 47:58Speaker 1: go again. That was great. I like to us that
- 48:01Speaker 1: was so funny. So like when you're going through that,
- 48:04Speaker 1: how much is coming to you? Like in the moment,
- 48:06Speaker 1: all in the moment, man, I just And that's one
- 48:08Speaker 1: of my favorite things, is like really trying to embody
- 48:12Speaker 1: this person, you know what I mean, Like, even if
- 48:15Speaker 1: it's not exactly something they'd say, it's still the fun
- 48:18Speaker 1: of it. Of Gus Johnson just who knows what the
- 48:20Speaker 1: hell he's talking about? Right, like tal diggon Nights. Three
- 48:22Speaker 1: minutes left, to go, but he would say that like
- 48:25Speaker 1: you would. You just don't know. So that's part of
- 48:27Speaker 1: impersonation too, especially on the spot, is like you gotta
- 48:30Speaker 1: just roll with it. You can't stumble on yourself or
- 48:33Speaker 1: think about it too much because then if you do,
- 48:34Speaker 1: then you you break character in your screw. Yeah, I
- 48:37Speaker 1: gotta say you're a pro. The fact you were able
- 48:40Speaker 1: to sort of ramp up to that and on the
- 48:42Speaker 1: spot like flip the idea because we had had a
- 48:45Speaker 1: different idea entirely unbelievably impressive. Really appreciate it, Glad, Like
- 48:50Speaker 1: you're following skyrocketing and more and more people are paying attention.
- 48:55Speaker 1: Joey Molinaro, brilliant impressionist. Thank you for coming on the Favorites.
- 49:01Speaker 1: Thanks Chad, there was a lot of fun guys, talk
- 49:02Speaker 1: to you soon. As always, we're going to close with
