- 0:00Hello, everyone. This is Erica Spicer Mason with
- 0:02Becker's Healthcare. Thank you so much for tuning
- 0:04into the Becker's Healthcare podcast series.
- 0:07Today, we're going to talk about how AtlantiCare
- 0:10is transforming care delivery with a connected health
- 0:13system
- 0:14and AI powered clinical workflows.
- 0:16And joining me for this conversation is Jordan
- 0:18Ruck, the CIO at AtlantiCare.
- 0:21Jordan, welcome to the podcast. Thank you so
- 0:23much for being here today.
- 0:24Thank you, Erica. Happy to be here.
- 0:27Really happy to have you. And before we
- 0:30learn a little bit more about AtlantiCare and
- 0:32some of the transformation going on at the
- 0:34health system, can you share just a little
- 0:36bit more about yourself and your work in
- 0:38this space?
- 0:39Sure. I'm happy to. So my name is
- 0:41Jordan Ruck. I am the chief information officer
- 0:44at AtlantiCare.
- 0:46I lead our
- 0:48organization's
- 0:49IT, including all of our technology
- 0:52and data,
- 0:54AI, and IT operations. So everything from
- 0:58cybersecurity and core infrastructure
- 1:00to
- 1:01our EHR and ERP strategy and adoption.
- 1:05I've spent
- 1:06more than twenty five years in health care
- 1:09IT across
- 1:11community hospitals,
- 1:13integrated delivery networks,
- 1:15and academic medical centers working
- 1:18really at the intersection
- 1:20of technology
- 1:22and strategy.
- 1:24I've had the opportunity to grow
- 1:27through every layer of health care IT. I
- 1:29started my
- 1:31career as an h l seven programmer,
- 1:34and moved to project management
- 1:38and ultimately began leading enterprise wide transformation initiatives,
- 1:42which has kinda stuck with me since then.
- 1:46Over the course of my career, I've been
- 1:48a
- 1:49chief innovation officer,
- 1:50a chief technology officer, and now, CIO. I
- 1:54think what's
- 1:55what's remained really constant for me is my
- 1:58passion for using technology to improve patient care.
- 2:02Well, it's so great to learn more about
- 2:04you, Jordan, and to have your expertise on
- 2:06the line with us today. What an impressive
- 2:09background you have.
- 2:10And I think I'd like to start a
- 2:12little bit high level here and talk about
- 2:14AtlantiCare's
- 2:15significant transformation
- 2:16that's taking place.
- 2:18I understand that transformation is part of its
- 2:20vision 2030 strategy.
- 2:23So I'd love for you to briefly touch
- 2:25on this initiative,
- 2:26maybe give our listeners a little bit more
- 2:28context there.
- 2:29And as CIO, from your perspective, what role
- 2:32has Oracle played in helping guide the organization
- 2:34through this transformation?
- 2:37Vision twenty thirty is AtlantiCare's strategic plan to
- 2:41redefine health care delivery in our region
- 2:44through
- 2:45innovation,
- 2:46workforce empowerment, and community centered care
- 2:50are
- 2:51programs built on four pillars,
- 2:53serving the community,
- 2:55workplace excellence,
- 2:57accelerating transformation,
- 2:58and growing market share.
- 3:01And Vision twenty thirty is really what drew
- 3:03me to AtlantiCare.
- 3:05It's
- 3:06has tangible
- 3:08community focused goals. So it's not an abstract
- 3:12strategy.
- 3:13It has very clear targets like
- 3:16in like goals for reducing unsheltered homelessness
- 3:19by 20%
- 3:20and
- 3:21expanding life expectancy
- 3:23in our in our community by five years.
- 3:26And from my perspective, that level of commitment
- 3:28is is rare in health care. So it
- 3:30was really exciting.
- 3:32From a accelerating transformation
- 3:35standpoint,
- 3:36one of the four pillars,
- 3:38Oracle's been a really critical partner.
- 3:40So together, we're implementing
- 3:43Oracle's latest EHR.
- 3:45We're implementing
- 3:46Oracle Fusion, the ERP platform,
- 3:49Oracle Health patient accounting,
- 3:51life sciences,
- 3:53and and others. In total, we're delivering
- 3:56more than 20 new solutions
- 3:58and more than 60 capabilities
- 4:00across six work streams.
- 4:02We're moving most of our on premises data
- 4:05center applications
- 4:06to Oracle Cloud Infrastructure.
- 4:09And
- 4:10right now, we're about halfway through,
- 4:13the overall program.
- 4:15So we have a six wave transformation, and
- 4:17three three of the six waves are done.
- 4:20Really, the the through line across all of
- 4:23this work is
- 4:25a connected,
- 4:26secure data foundation that
- 4:28improves outcomes,
- 4:30simplifies
- 4:31our workflows across clinical and administrative,
- 4:34and enhances
- 4:35the day to day experience for clinicians, staff,
- 4:38and patients.
- 4:40So, Jordan, I know you mentioned a big
- 4:42part of this transformation
- 4:43is creating a more connected system across clinical
- 4:47and operational workflows.
- 4:49And I'd love to know kind of at
- 4:50a more ground level what that single connected
- 4:53system, what it actually means for AtlantiCare,
- 4:56and how does having more connected data and
- 4:58technology
- 4:59actually help improve the experience for both physicians
- 5:02and patients?
- 5:04Yeah. The the connected data and technology
- 5:07is really where it gets exciting. So for
- 5:10AtlantiCare,
- 5:11a single connected system means
- 5:14seamless integration
- 5:15between our enterprise resource planning systems
- 5:19and our electronic health record.
- 5:22And the integration is foundational, so not just
- 5:25to operational efficiency,
- 5:27but to keeping patient care
- 5:30at the center of everything we do.
- 5:33I think, as you know, health care has
- 5:35made
- 5:36incredible advancements over the past decade,
- 5:39but the reality is most health systems still
- 5:42operate with deeply fragmented business processes.
- 5:46So
- 5:47supply chain,
- 5:48HR,
- 5:49revenue cycle,
- 5:51ancillary systems, and the EHR
- 5:54largely function in silos across the country.
- 5:57Point solutions
- 5:59have helped, but
- 6:00no health system
- 6:02has truly achieved end to end integration across
- 6:05these domains.
- 6:06And AtlantiCare,
- 6:07in partnership with Oracle, is gonna change that.
- 6:11And it's not just a technology initiative. It's
- 6:14it's a transformation
- 6:16in how care and operations are connected.
- 6:20So by
- 6:22deliberately aligning ERP and EHR capabilities,
- 6:25we're able to link demand to staffing,
- 6:29supply chain, and financial operations,
- 6:32and it creates a more responsive,
- 6:34resilient, and patient centered health system overall. So
- 6:37let me give you a couple practical examples.
- 6:40That always helps me understand a little bit
- 6:42better what what the impact will be.
- 6:45So the first one is workforce optimization.
- 6:48So with integrated data,
- 6:50we can make smarter decisions based on patient
- 6:53acuity,
- 6:55department workload,
- 6:56clinician skills,
- 6:58credentials,
- 6:59and availability.
- 7:00We're moving forward toward smart scheduling
- 7:03that aligns clinical demand from the EHR
- 7:07with workforce management data infusion
- 7:10and even predictive scheduling models that
- 7:14anticipate volume based on seasonality
- 7:17so we can proactively address staffing shortages before
- 7:20they have an impact.
- 7:23Another practical example is our global item master.
- 7:28So today, most health systems maintain
- 7:31multiple versions
- 7:33of the same item
- 7:35across many different systems in in their environment.
- 7:38So take the example of a pacemaker.
- 7:41We have a record of the pacemaker
- 7:44in our supply chain system, and we have
- 7:47the supplier information. We have the cost. We
- 7:49have the manufacturer,
- 7:51how many on hand.
- 7:53We have another copy of the pacemaker in
- 7:56the EHR
- 7:57to track the procedure,
- 8:00who's performing the surgery,
- 8:02the implantable device information,
- 8:05the documentation for the procedure, etcetera.
- 8:07Many many health systems also have a third
- 8:10or fourth copy
- 8:12of that same pacemaker in the dedicated
- 8:15cardiovascular
- 8:16information system
- 8:18and another copy or two in the finance
- 8:20and billing systems.
- 8:21So
- 8:23by standardizing
- 8:24on a single Oracle platform,
- 8:27we reduce complexity
- 8:29and eliminate a a lot of redundancy
- 8:31and ultimately support safer, more efficient patient care.
- 8:35And this this same paradigm, I think, applies
- 8:38to any industry, not just health care. If
- 8:40you have four or five copies of the
- 8:42same item,
- 8:44you're not operating in an efficient way.
- 8:47Yeah.
- 8:48Jordan, appreciate the examples.
- 8:50They did a really nice job of giving
- 8:52our listeners some really rich detail here. And
- 8:55I know you had noted in your first
- 8:57example
- 8:58this idea of workforce optimization.
- 9:01And so I wanna touch on administrative burden
- 9:03as it relates to workforce optimization.
- 9:06We know that's a major priority across health
- 9:08care right now is reducing that burden.
- 9:11And AtlantiCare recently implemented Oracle's clinical AI agent.
- 9:15So I'd love to know what that experience
- 9:17has been like for your providers so far
- 9:19and any impact that you've seen in on
- 9:21things like documentation time, satisfaction,
- 9:24and the overall patient visit?
- 9:27Yeah. CAA has really been a great story
- 9:30for AtlantiCare, and
- 9:32we were the first customer
- 9:34to deploy the clinical AI agent. And we've
- 9:37been part of that journey with Oracle since
- 9:392024.
- 9:42The impact's been really significant. So
- 9:45since
- 9:46implementing the technology, we have a few metrics
- 9:48that we've been tracking.
- 9:50And we look at the amount of time
- 9:52spent in the EHR overall,
- 9:55and we look at the amount of time
- 9:57spent specifically in documentation.
- 9:59And we measure it per provider, per patient
- 10:03before the use of the technology
- 10:05and obviously after the use of the technology.
- 10:08And what we've seen
- 10:10is a 40% reduction
- 10:12in documentation
- 10:13time
- 10:14and a 30%
- 10:16reduction in EMR time.
- 10:18So really significant numbers. The feedback
- 10:21from the tool has been
- 10:24overwhelmingly
- 10:25positive.
- 10:26So clinicians
- 10:27consistently tell us they're able to focus more
- 10:30on the patient
- 10:31and less on the computer, which is really
- 10:34exactly the outcome we're we're hoping for.
- 10:37Based on that success on the ambulatory
- 10:40side,
- 10:41we've already rolled out the clinical AI agent
- 10:44across all of our emergency departments as well.
- 10:47We're We're preparing to go live with the
- 10:49clinical AI agent for nursing in the coming
- 10:52months, and it's especially exciting because it extends
- 10:55those same benefits to nurses.
- 10:57And at most health care organizations, nurses are
- 11:01either near or the majority of the work
- 11:03force, so really big impact on our on
- 11:05our ability to be efficient.
- 11:08But our nurses are gonna be able to
- 11:09use
- 11:10voice enabled documentation,
- 11:13intelligent prompts, and have streamlined chart navigation
- 11:17to support their assessments,
- 11:19their rounding,
- 11:20and their ability to search the chart.
- 11:23So we see this as
- 11:25redefining the nurse EHR relationship, and I think
- 11:28that work is long overdue.
- 11:30Yeah.
- 11:31It's an exciting next step, Jordan, and I
- 11:34appreciate all the details you've shared about the
- 11:36transformation with our listeners so far. I think
- 11:38we've got a really nice view of what
- 11:41that is looking like on the ground at
- 11:42AtlantiCare right now. And as you look ahead,
- 11:45how do you see AI continuing to shape
- 11:47care delivery and operations at the health system?
- 11:50And beyond clinical documentation,
- 11:52where are you seeing the biggest opportunities for
- 11:55AI and more connected tech platforms to really
- 11:58transform care in the next few years.
- 12:01Yeah. Erica, there's no shortage of AI agents
- 12:04in the market right now,
- 12:06which is why strong governance is critical. So
- 12:09we have a formal governance committee
- 12:12that
- 12:13evaluates where AI
- 12:15can deliver real value
- 12:17and where AtlantiCare is gonna invest. So our
- 12:20our governance committee has representation
- 12:22from across our health system,
- 12:25and we're all extremely excited about the future.
- 12:29But we're taking the time to ensure that
- 12:31the solutions we're deploying have been fully tested
- 12:34and validated before using them in production. That
- 12:37that's a really important point in health care.
- 12:39However, we're planning to roll out agents
- 12:42across
- 12:43clinical operations,
- 12:45finance,
- 12:47HR, supply chain,
- 12:49patient experience, and in our command center.
- 12:53I'm particularly excited about
- 12:55agents that focus on where clinicians spend the
- 12:58most time
- 12:59in the EHR. So when we started this
- 13:02program,
- 13:03we laid out the areas in the system
- 13:05where the most time is spent.
- 13:07And areas like
- 13:10searching for a piece of documentation, maybe a
- 13:13scanned document that isn't indexed in a way
- 13:15that makes it easy to find,
- 13:17or discharge planning,
- 13:19these are areas where
- 13:21there is a lot of time spent in
- 13:23the system. There's a lot of clicks. And
- 13:25we've been able to improve, as I mentioned,
- 13:27documentation
- 13:28time
- 13:29on the ambulatory
- 13:30side by 40%, and I I wanna see
- 13:32the same thing happen across other areas.
- 13:35I'm also looking forward to our ability to
- 13:38make improvements to administrative functions,
- 13:42like prior authorization
- 13:44and predictive scheduling,
- 13:46patient throughput, OR utilization,
- 13:49and on the HR side, our process for
- 13:51onboarding and employee retention.
- 13:54There are agents to support all of these
- 13:56functions,
- 13:58similar to on the clinical side, but on
- 14:00the administrative side.
- 14:02And another the third area that I'm really
- 14:04excited about
- 14:06is AI for patient engagement.
- 14:08So Oracle's made major investments in the new
- 14:11portal,
- 14:12which aligns
- 14:14very closely with AtlantiCare's priorities and our our
- 14:17vision to create a more
- 14:19connected
- 14:20consumer grade health care experience. So our, you
- 14:23know, our patients and our communities are looking
- 14:25for their interactions with health care to be
- 14:28like their interactions with retail
- 14:31and with other industries, and, you know, we
- 14:32wanna help get there.
- 14:34The next generation portal
- 14:36is going live in October for AtlantiCare, and
- 14:40it's gonna streamline how our patients interact with
- 14:42AtlantiCare.
- 14:44We wanna make the process to navigate their
- 14:47records intuitive.
- 14:49We wanna offer convenient registration and check-in,
- 14:52help making appointment scheduling easy, and all of
- 14:55those workflows
- 14:57are really supported with AI
- 15:00and
- 15:00guide the patient through those experiences.
- 15:03So in summary, I'm ultimately,
- 15:07AI, when it's paired with a connected platform,
- 15:10I think particularly when it's fully integrated,
- 15:13you know, all of these are native solutions
- 15:16in Oracle,
- 15:18which is a big differentiator. It
- 15:20all of this allows our team to
- 15:23free up from administrative work so they can
- 15:26focus on what matters most. And I think
- 15:28one thing we can all agree on is
- 15:30that's caring for our patients and improving the
- 15:32health of our communities.
- 15:35So well said, Jordan. And, I mean, it
- 15:38sounds like there is just an incredible amount
- 15:40of innovation going on at AtlantiCare. So I
- 15:43appreciate you breaking it all down for our
- 15:45listeners, telling us more about Vision twenty thirty,
- 15:48where Oracle support has factored in. It's been
- 15:51a really great conversation, and I just wanna
- 15:53thank you again, Jordan, for making the time.
- 15:55Yeah. My pleasure. Great talking, Erica.
- 15:58And we'd also like to thank our podcast
- 16:00sponsor for today, Oracle Health.
