- 0:00Speaker 1: Cal Poly is in session. Students swarm through campus and
- 0:03Speaker 1: file in and out of classes.
- 0:05Speaker 2: They're thinking about the chapter of reading they have tonight,
- 0:07Speaker 2: their next class, their new dorm, your senior project, how
- 0:10Speaker 2: to get to the gym, what's for dinner tonight? Where's
- 0:12Speaker 2: the nearest bathroom?
- 0:15Speaker 1: Kate and I know, things can get a bit chaotic
- 0:17Speaker 1: as a student navigating the ins and outs of college life.
- 0:21Speaker 2: At cal Poly. We focus on learning by doing, but
- 0:23Speaker 2: sometimes you don't know what to do well. Emma and
- 0:26Speaker 2: I are here to answer your who, what, when? Where? Why?
- 0:29Speaker 2: An house here on CP one oh one Learned by Listening,
- 0:32Speaker 2: presented by KCPR ninety one point three. Hi mustang, I'm
- 0:35Speaker 2: Kate Lopenski, a graduating journalism student.
- 0:38Speaker 1: And I'm Imma Hughes, a graduating English student here at
- 0:41Speaker 1: cal Poly.
- 0:42Speaker 2: And we're here to share our tell all guide on
- 0:44Speaker 2: how to survive and thrive at cal Poly San Luis Obispo.
- 0:48Speaker 3: So grab a notebook. You may want to write this down.
- 1:03Speaker 2: All right, as you might have caught in the intro.
- 1:05Speaker 2: Emma and I are graduating.
- 1:07Speaker 3: I know, bittersweet, it's so gross.
- 1:10Speaker 2: Okay, we hate to say this, but this is our
- 1:13Speaker 2: last episode as the host of CP one Oh one.
- 1:16Speaker 1: I know you all are crying at home right now
- 1:18Speaker 1: listening to this podcast.
- 1:20Speaker 3: I know it's so sad. We're crying with you, so sad.
- 1:24Speaker 2: But don't worry. We're going out with the bang and
- 1:26Speaker 2: we're gonna leave you in good hands.
- 1:27Speaker 1: Yeah. So, to wrap up our podcasting days in a
- 1:30Speaker 1: pretty neat little bow, we wanted to share with you
- 1:33Speaker 1: are hidden secrets on how to actually run a podcast.
- 1:37Speaker 1: So as we all know, we are the experts. So
- 1:40Speaker 1: if you're wanting to start a pod, listen up, because
- 1:42Speaker 1: we got good things to go over.
- 1:45Speaker 2: All right, So just to start off, finding your topic
- 1:48Speaker 2: in your audience are absolutely crucial, and like we know
- 1:52Speaker 2: the podcasts are all about talking, but the most important
- 1:56Speaker 2: thing about having a podcast is at first just having
- 1:59Speaker 2: something to say.
- 2:00Speaker 1: Yeah, and you want to make sure that you're choosing
- 2:01Speaker 1: something that isn't like already being said, Like you want
- 2:05Speaker 1: to have a niche and just stick to it. So
- 2:09Speaker 1: I think one of the first things, first and foremost
- 2:12Speaker 1: is to think about like the tone of your podcast,
- 2:14Speaker 1: Like do you want it to be serious, informative, comedic,
- 2:18Speaker 1: Like what is the end goal for your podcast?
- 2:21Speaker 2: Yeah, and you don't just have to stick to one tone.
- 2:23Speaker 2: You can combine and mix and match like we do.
- 2:25Speaker 2: We're supposed to be an informational podcast, but we also
- 2:28Speaker 2: try to be comedic as well.
- 2:30Speaker 1: Right, and you can get that with different topics too,
- 2:32Speaker 1: Like we've done how to Party, but we've also done
- 2:35Speaker 1: like how to mental health.
- 2:37Speaker 3: Kay?
- 2:38Speaker 1: You did start a podcast before this one, right, Yeah,
- 2:42Speaker 1: let's not talk about it.
- 2:43Speaker 2: Why because it's embarrassing.
- 2:45Speaker 4: No, I love it.
- 2:47Speaker 2: I like deleted it from like all platforms because I
- 2:50Speaker 2: was so embarrassed. But like I mean, the statistic is
- 2:53Speaker 2: that most podcasts don't succeed after three episodes, and I
- 2:56Speaker 2: definitely fit that stat because I didn't have structure. I
- 3:01Speaker 2: didn't have a scheduled recording time, I didn't have any
- 3:03Speaker 2: of the proper equipment, which we will all dive into, yes,
- 3:07Speaker 2: but it was good practice in the end. It definitely
- 3:09Speaker 2: helped me tighten up my speech well.
- 3:11Speaker 1: And it also had a really cute theme that was
- 3:15Speaker 1: like what walking and talking with key? So even if
- 3:19Speaker 1: you weren't confident in your actual podcast, I loved the
- 3:23Speaker 1: theme of it because it was just you and your thoughts,
- 3:26Speaker 1: so just one thing to note with topic like genre
- 3:30Speaker 1: and tone will really speak to then a specific audience,
- 3:35Speaker 1: so kind of goes hand in hand. When you are
- 3:37Speaker 1: crafting your topic, you want to be thinking about who
- 3:40Speaker 1: it is that you're actually talking to, especially because podcast
- 3:43Speaker 1: is all about talking. You're essentially having a conversation, even
- 3:47Speaker 1: though it seems one sided, but you're having a conversation
- 3:50Speaker 1: with your listener. So again, CP one oh one is
- 3:53Speaker 1: a how to podcast all about cow Poly Slow. Therefore,
- 3:56Speaker 1: our target audience is primarily cow Poly student.
- 4:00Speaker 2: And when you choose what your podcast is about your
- 4:03Speaker 2: overall topic, you're essentially selecting your audience as well, because yeah,
- 4:08Speaker 2: not every topic is for every.
- 4:10Speaker 1: Person exactly, and that's okay, and that's why, like for
- 4:13Speaker 1: us too, when thinking about new episodes or like what
- 4:16Speaker 1: would be most beneficial for cal Poly students.
- 4:20Speaker 2: Absolutely, another main thing about podcasting we're thinking about is
- 4:26Speaker 2: considering your team and who you want to have on it.
- 4:29Speaker 2: So yeah, podcasting can seem super simple, just like a
- 4:32Speaker 2: conversation between two, three, four people, but it's actually quite complicated.
- 4:36Speaker 2: You need to think about the chemistry between you and
- 4:39Speaker 2: your co host or just if you're able to talk
- 4:41Speaker 2: just to yourself who's going to edit it. It's a whole
- 4:45Speaker 2: team that you need to be thinking about.
- 4:48Speaker 3: Yeah, so let's kind of get into it.
- 4:50Speaker 1: So first and foremost, what obviously comes to mind is
- 4:54Speaker 1: just the host, So like, who is the person or
- 4:56Speaker 1: the people that are going to yap on the pod?
- 5:00Speaker 1: This could be one person or multiple people, depending on
- 5:03Speaker 1: your topic, your setup, what's gonna work best for you.
- 5:06Speaker 1: Obviously you're at CP one on one, Kate and I
- 5:10Speaker 1: take the mics and do what we do best, which
- 5:13Speaker 1: is just talking, and yeappen when we had like a
- 5:17Speaker 1: hosting opportunity open up. Kate was one of the first
- 5:20Speaker 1: people I had in mind that I knew you were
- 5:22Speaker 1: interested in podcasting because of your personal podcast. So even
- 5:26Speaker 1: if you don't think it was like, you know, a success,
- 5:30Speaker 1: it definitely opened doors for you, even just coming and
- 5:32Speaker 1: joining CP one on one.
- 5:34Speaker 2: Yeah, I felt so honored when you reached out to me,
- 5:36Speaker 2: and just like I can vividly remember the text that
- 5:40Speaker 2: you sent. You're like, hey, there's an open hosting spot
- 5:43Speaker 2: at CP one on one, and I wanted to ask
- 5:45Speaker 2: you first because I know that you've experienced and I
- 5:47Speaker 2: think I used to go to host with you and
- 5:49Speaker 2: Like that's what I'm most proud of how like this
- 5:53Speaker 2: podcast has grown is because our friendship has grown along
- 5:55Speaker 2: with it. Yeah, like we were so awkward and I know,
- 5:58Speaker 2: botic in the beginning. I don't like going back and
- 6:00Speaker 2: listening to our first episode.
- 6:02Speaker 1: And it's also just weird navigating, Like podcasting in general
- 6:04Speaker 1: is a pretty like intimidating thing to start My first
- 6:07Speaker 1: time ever, Like doing CP one on one, I like
- 6:10Speaker 1: forgot to breathe because I was so worried that like
- 6:13Speaker 1: the mics would pick up my breathing that I literally
- 6:16Speaker 1: was like not like I couldn't even get out any
- 6:19Speaker 1: words because I wasn't breathing. So it definitely is just
- 6:22Speaker 1: like again a learning curve and adjustment. But what makes
- 6:26Speaker 1: it so helpful and beautiful is doing it with a
- 6:29Speaker 1: friend and just being able to sit in a studio
- 6:33Speaker 1: in front of some mics and just have a natural conversation.
- 6:37Speaker 2: Yeah. So from your team, you pretty much have your
- 6:41Speaker 2: host or like two three hostss. We love working in
- 6:46Speaker 2: like bigger groups Honestly, Like I've tried hosting by myself
- 6:49Speaker 2: before it didn't work out. It's totally up to you.
- 6:51Speaker 2: But then we have an editor Gabby, who we're gonna
- 6:54Speaker 2: hear from soon. She is gonna do a little interview
- 6:57Speaker 2: with us, which is so exciting on the PO. And
- 7:00Speaker 2: then we have our manager, Ben, our fearless leader. He's
- 7:04Speaker 2: in charge of just distributing our podcast, keeping us on track.
- 7:08Speaker 2: Every week we have just a Tuesday check in where
- 7:11Speaker 2: he'll ask us to pitch our next episode, and one
- 7:16Speaker 2: hundred percent of the time he just says, great, that's
- 7:18Speaker 2: so fun. Yeah, so excited.
- 7:20Speaker 1: He's just like the best support system for us, like
- 7:24Speaker 1: he is if we're not our own hype man, he's
- 7:26Speaker 1: definitely our hype.
- 7:27Speaker 2: Man, absolutely. And then from there we like, now that
- 7:30Speaker 2: we have our team, we can divide up tasks. So yeah,
- 7:33Speaker 2: like I said, Ben distributes the podcast, Gabby edits. We
- 7:37Speaker 2: are in charge of hosting and also writing our script.
- 7:40Speaker 1: Yes, so hate to burst your bubble, but we do
- 7:43Speaker 1: script some of our podcasts. For most of our CP
- 7:47Speaker 1: one on one episodes, it's just Kate and I kind
- 7:49Speaker 1: of breaking down what we want to talk about and
- 7:53Speaker 1: adding like bullet points. So we do brainstorm. We choose
- 7:57Speaker 1: topics like today we're talking you know, overall theme is
- 8:01Speaker 1: how to podcast, but we're talking about like the setup
- 8:05Speaker 1: your team, common pitfalls, having an interview, looking at marketing
- 8:10Speaker 1: things like that. So we make little like subtopics that
- 8:14Speaker 1: we want to go into, and then we kind of
- 8:16Speaker 1: just we've gotten into a groove of adding bullets instead
- 8:19Speaker 1: of like actually scripting word for word, like from Beata
- 8:23Speaker 1: and when we want.
- 8:24Speaker 2: To script the entire episode. But I do recommend doing
- 8:27Speaker 2: a quick search on Google about how to script a
- 8:30Speaker 2: podcast episode because it's a different format, Like instead of
- 8:34Speaker 2: using commas, we use the lease so we can tell
- 8:39Speaker 2: when we're supposed to take a break in our speech,
- 8:42Speaker 2: because coms are just so tiny and so hidden.
- 8:45Speaker 1: The like written aspect of scripting a podcast is way
- 8:48Speaker 1: more directive than like typical writing because you're on the
- 8:53Speaker 1: spot in front of a microphone and you need to
- 8:55Speaker 1: be able to see like, oh, remember when I said
- 8:57Speaker 1: I couldn't breathe, or like I stopped breathing. The ellipses
- 8:59Speaker 1: are like, girl, take a breath, Like that's where you
- 9:02Speaker 1: need to be breathing.
- 9:04Speaker 2: So, now that we've talked about the team and just
- 9:05Speaker 2: different tasks that we do, let's get into how we
- 9:08Speaker 2: actually set up our equipment. So I have been lucky
- 9:13Speaker 2: enough to actually get a really good understanding of how
- 9:16Speaker 2: it all works. I really do enjoy the audio side
- 9:18Speaker 2: of things and just the studio setup, So like, I
- 9:22Speaker 2: do not mind coming in here a little bit early
- 9:24Speaker 2: and making sure all the mics are working.
- 9:26Speaker 1: It's also helpful that I, well, it's not helpful that
- 9:29Speaker 1: I show up late, but it's helpful that Kate comes
- 9:31Speaker 1: early because I don't know how to set up and
- 9:34Speaker 1: I am constantly late.
- 9:35Speaker 3: So I'm sorry, Kate, No.
- 9:38Speaker 2: You're fine. I like having on my AirPods and just
- 9:41Speaker 2: getting into the zone. It's how like I kind of
- 9:43Speaker 2: collect myself before we record.
- 9:45Speaker 3: Yeah, just because.
- 9:46Speaker 2: Sometimes we walk into the studio, like we record on
- 9:49Speaker 2: Fridays in the night before is college Thursdays downtown.
- 9:53Speaker 1: Yeah, as you know from our how to Barcrawl episode,
- 9:57Speaker 1: we frequently come in Friday mornings a little bit over.
- 10:00Speaker 2: By the time that this episode comes out, we will
- 10:02Speaker 2: both be twenty two, so yeah, we are of age,
- 10:07Speaker 2: but yeah we'll come in after like five hours of
- 10:10Speaker 2: sleep just not feeling ourselves. So like, honestly, setting up
- 10:13Speaker 2: just really gets me into the zone. But first thing
- 10:15Speaker 2: that I recommend is testing your audio right away. We
- 10:19Speaker 2: just we have an SD card that we record everything
- 10:22Speaker 2: onto and this cool thing called a roadcaster that I'm
- 10:25Speaker 2: gonna talk about a little bit later. But I just
- 10:28Speaker 2: plug in the SD card, the micro SD card into
- 10:30Speaker 2: my computer, pull up the audio file, and just make
- 10:33Speaker 2: sure that the audio levels are correct. We do like
- 10:36Speaker 2: we just do like a check check test thing.
- 10:39Speaker 1: Typically involve singing yea and into the mic and I
- 10:42Speaker 1: will harmonize, so.
- 10:43Speaker 3: It's really pretty Yeah, we're like great singers.
- 10:47Speaker 2: Yes, we just want to make sure that because Emma
- 10:50Speaker 2: speaks louder than I do, so we adjust our audio
- 10:53Speaker 2: so that it fits that so Gabby's not having to
- 10:55Speaker 2: do anything crazy. And then also I know it just
- 10:58Speaker 2: sounds so stupid. Just make sure that everything's on, because
- 11:02Speaker 2: we've had it's happened a couple of times before where
- 11:05Speaker 2: we have fully recorded like half an episode it didn't
- 11:09Speaker 2: pick up at all, and then you just go back
- 11:12Speaker 2: and your episode just isn't as real as it could
- 11:15Speaker 2: have been because you're having to repeat everything and.
- 11:17Speaker 1: You're trying to like recreate the moments that were so
- 11:20Speaker 1: candid and like so like natural the first time, and
- 11:24Speaker 1: then they just came out silted and weird, and you're
- 11:26Speaker 1: like dang, I really wish that first one recorded.
- 11:29Speaker 2: No, even now, you can just see my head just
- 11:31Speaker 2: like I know, we're constantly looking like we trauma from it.
- 11:35Speaker 3: Not working out.
- 11:36Speaker 2: So yeah, I mean I feel like that pretty much
- 11:38Speaker 2: covers it. Just making sure that everything is on, that
- 11:41Speaker 2: your mic levels are good, that you have an SD card.
- 11:44Speaker 1: I will also say, in terms of setting up, make
- 11:47Speaker 1: sure that you come in knowing like what your vibe
- 11:50Speaker 1: is for the day, because there's times where Kate and I,
- 11:52Speaker 1: especially because of college Thursdays, we come in and our
- 11:55Speaker 1: energy is so low and we don't want that for
- 11:58Speaker 1: a podcast. So you do want to kind of check
- 12:01Speaker 1: in with yourself before getting behind the microphone, just to
- 12:03Speaker 1: know like what type of energy are you going to
- 12:05Speaker 1: be bringing to the pod. What can you and your
- 12:07Speaker 1: co host maybe do to bring that energy up. Make
- 12:11Speaker 1: sure that the tone is fitting the vibe of the episode.
- 12:15Speaker 2: So now let's record an episode. So first question that
- 12:19Speaker 2: you need to ask yourself is what equipment do you
- 12:22Speaker 2: have accessible to you. This can be as elaborate or
- 12:26Speaker 2: as chill as you want. We use a road caster
- 12:30Speaker 2: and then we plug in microphones into that. We also
- 12:33Speaker 2: have headphones. We've stopped using them because we don't like
- 12:36Speaker 2: hearing ourselves talk. Yeah, and it's just more real when
- 12:39Speaker 2: we don't wear headphones.
- 12:41Speaker 1: Yeah, because when you wear the headphones, you're so like
- 12:43Speaker 1: critical of your voice and like any other sound that
- 12:47Speaker 1: like the microphones are picking up on. Versus like not
- 12:49Speaker 1: wearing them. You kind of just relax and like ease
- 12:52Speaker 1: into your role of like, let's just talk again. Yeah,
- 12:55Speaker 1: big promoters of just having a conversation and just.
- 12:58Speaker 2: Make sure that you're recording an quiet space without an echo.
- 13:01Speaker 2: That's also very important. Now we have a special guest.
- 13:06Speaker 1: Yes, this is our lovely editor Gabby. She's finally behind
- 13:13Speaker 1: the mic.
- 13:14Speaker 2: Okay, so we've referenced you a few times obviously, but
- 13:17Speaker 2: why don't you just introduce yourself for anyone new listening.
- 13:21Speaker 4: I'm Gabriella, also known as Gab.
- 13:24Speaker 5: I do the editing for CP one oh one for
- 13:28Speaker 5: this year at least, And yeah, I'm kind of the
- 13:31Speaker 5: behind the scenes voice that you guys never hear.
- 13:33Speaker 4: But now I'm on a mic, which is weird.
- 13:36Speaker 3: Yeah, how does it feel?
- 13:37Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 13:38Speaker 4: Definitely weird.
- 13:38Speaker 2: I mean I did.
- 13:39Speaker 5: I was on the mic for a podcasting class I
- 13:41Speaker 5: took with Kate back in.
- 13:43Speaker 2: Oh gosh, that was junior year, Like, it was probably
- 13:45Speaker 2: about a year ago.
- 13:47Speaker 5: It's been a while, but I'm excited, you know. I
- 13:50Speaker 5: love to hear myself talk, so really great.
- 13:52Speaker 1: And we're excited to have you on the pod. It's
- 13:55Speaker 1: so special.
- 13:55Speaker 4: I've been waiting for this one.
- 13:57Speaker 2: But anyways, so Gabby's really good at making us sound good.
- 14:00Speaker 2: So just first of all, how did you learn how
- 14:02Speaker 2: to edit?
- 14:03Speaker 5: Yeah, so the same podcast class I took with you
- 14:05Speaker 5: was kind of my first introduction to editing.
- 14:09Speaker 4: I use Adobe Audition.
- 14:10Speaker 5: You could do Premiere Pro too, but there's video components
- 14:14Speaker 5: and that's really hard to deal with.
- 14:15Speaker 3: So yeah, fair enough.
- 14:17Speaker 1: So with the editing that you are so fabulous at,
- 14:22Speaker 1: we're just curious about how long it takes because obviously
- 14:24Speaker 1: we are here in the studio, can and I clock in,
- 14:27Speaker 1: clock out. You know, takes us an hour two hours
- 14:31Speaker 1: to come in here and just yap at you. But
- 14:34Speaker 1: what is the timeline behind the scenes, because we know
- 14:37Speaker 1: it's a lot more intense.
- 14:40Speaker 3: Yeah, laughing through the.
- 14:43Speaker 5: I would say per week, I'm probably spending around three
- 14:49Speaker 5: to four hours editing an episode, because it's usually about
- 14:53Speaker 5: an episode a week.
- 14:54Speaker 4: That depends on how long the episode is.
- 14:56Speaker 5: It depends on how many errors or bloopers are kind
- 14:58Speaker 5: of in it. You know, professionally, you don't want to
- 15:02Speaker 5: hear a lot of umps and uhs and uh likes
- 15:06Speaker 5: and all of that, those kind of like filler words
- 15:08Speaker 5: that you use. If we're on an episode where you
- 15:11Speaker 5: know every other word uh uh, that it's.
- 15:14Speaker 4: Gonna take me a lot longer to edit out each of.
- 15:16Speaker 5: Those individual things. It just depends on kind of how
- 15:19Speaker 5: much needs to be cut. But yeah, I usually take
- 15:21Speaker 5: about two days to do it.
- 15:22Speaker 4: I'll start on I don't know, earlier in the week.
- 15:25Speaker 5: I'll get my first cuts kind of in there and
- 15:28Speaker 5: just listen to it one time over kind of get
- 15:30Speaker 5: an idea of what we're working with, and then once
- 15:32Speaker 5: I know kind of the key points of the episode
- 15:35Speaker 5: and what I want to focus on, I kind of
- 15:36Speaker 5: cut the not so interesting part. So i'd say the
- 15:39Speaker 5: whole process is like three fourish hours totally.
- 15:43Speaker 3: So, are you, like so sick of our voices or what?
- 15:46Speaker 1: Like?
- 15:48Speaker 5: No, Actually, I really appreciate the way that this podcast
- 15:52Speaker 5: is formatted, in the way that you guys have a
- 15:53Speaker 5: different topic every time you're talking, So rather than like
- 15:56Speaker 5: kind of spewing on about the same stuff over and
- 15:59Speaker 5: over again, We're talking about something new and interesting, and
- 16:02Speaker 5: it also helps that you have a little bit of personality.
- 16:04Speaker 5: It's fine, there's something we try.
- 16:06Speaker 2: We try. We think we're comedians every year. Oh yeah,
- 16:08Speaker 2: I'm kind of sad. I second that I actually we're funny.
- 16:13Speaker 2: And then kind of tying into all of this, what
- 16:16Speaker 2: are the easiest and hardest parts about editing our episodes?
- 16:19Speaker 2: Because I know you kind of said that the filler
- 16:22Speaker 2: words are difficult to edit out, but our formats make
- 16:26Speaker 2: it easier. So just more along those lines for anyone
- 16:29Speaker 2: who wants to start their own podcast.
- 16:31Speaker 5: There are rules on how loud your audio can be
- 16:33Speaker 5: on published forms of journalism, and that rule is it
- 16:39Speaker 5: cannot exceed twelve decipels. Basically, in essence, you don't want
- 16:44Speaker 5: your volume pitch to reach a certain level, and so
- 16:47Speaker 5: that volume pitch is reached when your mic volumes aren't
- 16:50Speaker 5: adjusted correctly. When you know you're have plosive p's, which
- 16:53Speaker 5: is when you can hear that.
- 16:54Speaker 4: Like breath popping, Yeah, that popping sound in the.
- 16:58Speaker 5: Mic, which if you're headphone user and you're listening to
- 17:01Speaker 5: our podcast that is like a migraine waiting to happen.
- 17:04Speaker 3: We just cussed one.
- 17:07Speaker 4: Yeah, stuff like that.
- 17:09Speaker 5: And just like audio spikes, where like the audio is
- 17:12Speaker 5: going above what it can be, just individually, like bringing
- 17:16Speaker 5: down those levels is a bit of a pain, especially
- 17:20Speaker 5: because it's such a quick little thing that will happen,
- 17:23Speaker 5: like it'll be mid word, not even like or mid sound,
- 17:26Speaker 5: where you'll just hear that little spike in audio.
- 17:30Speaker 4: So I would say that that is probably one of
- 17:32Speaker 4: the harder parts of my job. For sure. It takes
- 17:36Speaker 4: the most time. What was the other part of the
- 17:39Speaker 4: question the easiest is.
- 17:40Speaker 3: Do we do anything that makes your life easy?
- 17:43Speaker 5: I would say probably the intro and outro, just because
- 17:48Speaker 5: we already have it recorded and so that's yeah, yeah,
- 17:52Speaker 5: I would yeah. I think my tip with that is
- 17:54Speaker 5: pre record your intro and outro. And that doesn't mean
- 17:56Speaker 5: that you can't tweak it as you go, but it
- 17:58Speaker 5: just makes the editing process so much easier when you
- 18:00Speaker 5: could just copy and paste that bad boy in and
- 18:02Speaker 5: then deal with the actual content totally.
- 18:04Speaker 1: I also think, and this is not in terms of
- 18:07Speaker 1: like us editing at all, but there's things that Kate
- 18:09Speaker 1: and I can do at times to help you, like
- 18:12Speaker 1: if we mess up, we are very clear about Gabby
- 18:15Speaker 1: take it out, Yes, even when Gabby's not here. For hosts,
- 18:18Speaker 1: if you're wanting to be a host, just think about
- 18:21Speaker 1: your editor, especially if it's you yourself. Make a note
- 18:24Speaker 1: of what you want to cut and just say it.
- 18:27Speaker 1: Because whoever it is that is going to be editing,
- 18:29Speaker 1: we'll be listening back and they'll hear it and they'll
- 18:31Speaker 1: be like, oh, okay, we were curious about any tips
- 18:35Speaker 1: for someone who's just getting started with like podcasting, specifically
- 18:39Speaker 1: with editing.
- 18:40Speaker 5: Okay, Well, if you're at cal Poly, take the podcasting
- 18:42Speaker 5: class through the Journalism department with Patti Pieburn because that
- 18:45Speaker 5: was one of the best classes I've ever taken in
- 18:47Speaker 5: my life.
- 18:47Speaker 4: Shout out Patty.
- 18:48Speaker 5: I agree, Yeah, I definitely found my passion for podcasting
- 18:53Speaker 5: through that because she'll walk you through all of the
- 18:55Speaker 5: platforms and all of the editing, your volume levels, all
- 18:59Speaker 5: of the legal stuff, so she really gives you a
- 19:01Speaker 5: good understanding of editing in that way. But if that
- 19:05Speaker 5: doesn't sound appealing to you, I would say go onto YouTube. Honestly,
- 19:09Speaker 5: YouTube is like my best friend. When in doubt, google it.
- 19:12Speaker 5: Out and just look up like anything you want to
- 19:15Speaker 5: know about it. I would say, start with Adobe Audition.
- 19:19Speaker 5: That's a good audio editing platform. Then go to YouTube
- 19:23Speaker 5: and say how do I mess with this? And how
- 19:25Speaker 5: do I edit my levels? And how do I change this?
- 19:27Speaker 5: And there's tutorials for everything and anything out there, and
- 19:30Speaker 5: I would say, just practice makes perfect with anything else,
- 19:34Speaker 5: you know, start recording random stuff, Start editing random audio
- 19:37Speaker 5: files that you have that you know, maybe they're just
- 19:40Speaker 5: too loud or you want to cut up certain things.
- 19:42Speaker 5: But yeah, I say, just get started. I think it's
- 19:46Speaker 5: a really daunting task. Just start and like just ask
- 19:48Speaker 5: for help when you need it, and you just you learn.
- 19:51Speaker 5: Like I don't even know how I learned, honestly, it
- 19:54Speaker 5: just kind of happens. Like I think, as you do it,
- 19:56Speaker 5: you don't even realize that you're picking up these skills.
- 19:58Speaker 5: They just kind of come with and then you're like,
- 20:00Speaker 5: oh my gosh, I'm editing a full podcast now.
- 20:03Speaker 2: So inspiring. Yeah, thank you so much, Gabby. Appreciate you,
- 20:07Speaker 2: and we're happy that you finally got to get behind
- 20:09Speaker 2: the mic with us.
- 20:11Speaker 1: And we've asked Gabby before and let's just like tell
- 20:14Speaker 1: you the reaction has been like no, if I have to,
- 20:17Speaker 1: like if you guys need me, so it's so much easier.
- 20:21Speaker 4: Editing other people's voices. I don't know why.
- 20:23Speaker 5: You just don't hear the same thing in That's the
- 20:26Speaker 5: other thing is like once you hear yourself back, like,
- 20:29Speaker 5: don't be disgusted by your own voice.
- 20:30Speaker 4: That's like a very common thing. Like no one likes
- 20:32Speaker 4: to hear themselves talk.
- 20:34Speaker 2: But except for us, because we're perfect every.
- 20:37Speaker 1: Single okay, but we have stopped wearing headphones because we
- 20:39Speaker 1: don't like hearing our own voice. So there's caveats, all right, Well,
- 20:45Speaker 1: is there anything else you would like to share about
- 20:48Speaker 1: editing in general or your your work here at CP
- 20:51Speaker 1: one one?
- 20:51Speaker 4: Oh my gosh, yes, actually is there?
- 20:58Speaker 5: Yes, if you're an editor, please take a break when
- 21:01Speaker 5: you need to, because I will get to a point
- 21:03Speaker 5: where I'm like physically crashing out because I've listened to
- 21:06Speaker 5: the same ten second audio bye over sixty times and
- 21:11Speaker 5: like my hands will physically start shaking and like I
- 21:13Speaker 5: could feel a headache coming on. So please, like take
- 21:15Speaker 5: the time to get up and walk away. And that
- 21:17Speaker 5: doesn't even have to be podcasting life in general. Take
- 21:20Speaker 5: the time for yourself when you need it, and if
- 21:22Speaker 5: you're interested in podcasting, just take the jump and do it.
- 21:24Speaker 4: Like you're not gonna.
- 21:25Speaker 5: Be super duper successful when you first start, but that's
- 21:28Speaker 5: like the glory of the process. You know, you just
- 21:30Speaker 5: gotta kind of stick with it, and then when you
- 21:33Speaker 5: do see success, it just means so much more.
- 21:35Speaker 2: Yeah, So learn by doing.
- 21:39Speaker 3: Sponsored back help.
- 21:40Speaker 2: Hey, thank you, Gab, Thank you Gabby Woo. As you
- 21:44Speaker 2: know by now, we're experts. We're perfect in every single way,
- 21:48Speaker 2: but I mean we have to admit that we do
- 21:50Speaker 2: make mistakes, sometimes only very.
- 21:53Speaker 3: Minimally, yeah, like so minimally.
- 21:55Speaker 2: Yeah, but let's talk about some of the mistakes that we.
- 21:59Speaker 3: May gus, I guess we can talk about our faults.
- 22:03Speaker 2: Yeah, so as we talked about with Gab, just those plosives,
- 22:06Speaker 2: those massive piece that closives elosives, Yeah, those are like
- 22:12Speaker 2: unpleasant to the ear.
- 22:14Speaker 1: Yeah, And like I remember, I didn't know, like I
- 22:16Speaker 1: never heard the word plosive before. I was like, I
- 22:18Speaker 1: don't know what you guys are talking about. And one
- 22:20Speaker 1: thing that is super helpful was just angling the microphone,
- 22:24Speaker 1: like so you're not talking directly into it.
- 22:26Speaker 2: So even if you do. What is this angle? Like,
- 22:30Speaker 2: it's like forty five free angle.
- 22:32Speaker 1: Yeah, so that's what we do just because I mean,
- 22:36Speaker 1: plosives are inevitable, but if it is angled, the mic
- 22:40Speaker 1: won't pick up on it as much, and it will
- 22:42Speaker 1: make it a little bit easier for editing purposes. Another
- 22:46Speaker 1: thing that I think is super like common and this
- 22:50Speaker 1: isn't necessarily a mistake, but it is totally a challenge.
- 22:53Speaker 1: It's just being nervous, Like it takes a lot to
- 22:57Speaker 1: get over the hump of you know, being an in
- 23:00Speaker 1: front of the mic, especially if you are wearing those headphones,
- 23:02Speaker 1: you're hearing your voice and a new capacity, like in
- 23:05Speaker 1: a way that you haven't probably ever heard it before.
- 23:08Speaker 1: So just kind of being comfortable with yourself enough to
- 23:13Speaker 1: like talk on or like into a microphone and then
- 23:16Speaker 1: hear it back later.
- 23:18Speaker 2: Yeah, because people want to listen to your podcast because
- 23:22Speaker 2: you're a human being and they find what you're saying
- 23:24Speaker 2: is interesting and that you're fun to listen to. And honestly,
- 23:28Speaker 2: the more nervous you are, like, the more it's going
- 23:31Speaker 2: to reflect through your voice and it's just not as
- 23:33Speaker 2: fun to listen to. And then another thing to note
- 23:36Speaker 2: that we've already kind of talked about already. Is just
- 23:38Speaker 2: audio levels and voice levels. So like we said, Emma's
- 23:42Speaker 2: voice is louder than mine, we have to turn up
- 23:44Speaker 2: my mic and then we leave hers kind of at
- 23:46Speaker 2: normal level.
- 23:48Speaker 3: Another thing to think about, which is something Yeah, this is.
- 23:52Speaker 2: Like twisting the night.
- 23:53Speaker 3: I know this might be Kate and I like this
- 23:58Speaker 3: might just be us.
- 23:59Speaker 1: But like we have lost SD cards that have had
- 24:03Speaker 1: our episodes on them before.
- 24:05Speaker 3: We've put it on like online.
- 24:07Speaker 2: Yeah, so like this is so easy to avoid.
- 24:10Speaker 1: Yes, Like we have like been in communication with each
- 24:14Speaker 1: other and like with our managers and all that, and
- 24:16Speaker 1: we thought we figured out like Okay, I'm gonna leave
- 24:19Speaker 1: the SD card here so that you can come by
- 24:21Speaker 1: the studio and grab it so you can edit with
- 24:23Speaker 1: it whatever, and then it just poof vanishes, disappears, never
- 24:28Speaker 1: to be seen again. Yeah, and all that work, that
- 24:30Speaker 1: whole episode is just gone.
- 24:33Speaker 2: But the way to avoid this is just to make
- 24:35Speaker 2: sure that your editor has their own SD card and
- 24:38Speaker 2: they just have it. Like for example, today, like I
- 24:42Speaker 2: she's not here anymore right now, she had to go,
- 24:43Speaker 2: she's busy, but I'm gonna be taking home the SD
- 24:47Speaker 2: card and uploading it as soon as I walk through
- 24:49Speaker 2: the door. Yes, just that we don't lose anything, because
- 24:52Speaker 2: it's a constant fear. Yeah.
- 24:53Speaker 1: Well, even in our last podcast that we recorded, the
- 24:57Speaker 1: audio like did not transfer, no, and like we were
- 25:00Speaker 1: freaking out and we like, we're so sure we recorded,
- 25:03Speaker 1: we had it and then it just disappeared. So just
- 25:09Speaker 1: be aware of where you are placing SD cards, how
- 25:12Speaker 1: you're working with the audio and things like that.
- 25:14Speaker 2: And then lastly just stumbling over our words. But again
- 25:18Speaker 2: this is an easy fix. If you don't like what
- 25:20Speaker 2: you said, just be like, just communicate to your editor
- 25:23Speaker 2: while you're recording. You'd literally just say, gab cut this.
- 25:27Speaker 2: I don't know, but it happens. You get excited when
- 25:31Speaker 2: you're behind the mic. But like Tricia Paya's style, just
- 25:34Speaker 2: talking super fast.
- 25:35Speaker 1: Well, then some words too, are just tricky, Like I know,
- 25:38Speaker 1: we've had to look up pronunciation sometimes to be like
- 25:41Speaker 1: are we even saying this correctly?
- 25:43Speaker 2: Like curous? How is that how you say it? For
- 25:45Speaker 2: the bar Cross episode, I don't even remember. I just
- 25:49Speaker 2: remember we saw that. We're like what yeah, so yeah,
- 25:53Speaker 2: just do your research and it's okay if you make
- 25:55Speaker 2: a mistake. Just tell your editor.
- 25:57Speaker 1: Well, that's all the time we have for today. One
- 26:00Speaker 1: last piece of advice don't be afraid to go out
- 26:03Speaker 1: and start a podcast and stay consistent. Whether or not
- 26:07Speaker 1: you stick with podcasting, you should at least be consistent
- 26:10Speaker 1: with your passions. That's a final, little last lesson. Kate
- 26:13Speaker 1: and I want to leave.
- 26:14Speaker 2: You with anyways, We'll be back with more tips and
