- 0:12In the kitchen you decide to
- 0:16stay that's how it winners
- 0:18made stick a fork in
- 0:31What is going on, everybody?
- 0:33Welcome to the Clydesdale Media Podcast,
- 0:36where we today are going to
- 0:37talk to new director of
- 0:40elite athletes at Proven, Jarrett Smith.
- 0:44But before we do that,
- 0:45huge shout out to Sue Griffiths.
- 0:47She just became a member of
- 0:49our YouTube channel,
- 0:50and we want to thank her
- 0:51because without you guys doing that,
- 0:53we could not support this show.
- 0:56But thank you so much, Sue,
- 0:57for doing that.
- 0:59Many thanks.
- 1:00With that,
- 1:02let's jump into a little bit of
- 1:05talk with Jarrett because
- 1:06last time we talked to you,
- 1:08things were very, very different.
- 1:12Yeah, different location, a lot going on.
- 1:16Yeah, so that was right after semifinals,
- 1:18I think,
- 1:18and we were kind of ramping stuff
- 1:20up for the MJF.
- 1:21Yeah, so at that point,
- 1:23you were living in Boston.
- 1:26You were coaching at Comptrain.
- 1:30And then all of a sudden I
- 1:33look at your Instagram and
- 1:34you're making a statement
- 1:35thanking everybody there
- 1:37for the opportunity they
- 1:38gave you and that you were
- 1:40moving to Nashville to work
- 1:43with the proven team.
- 1:44So how did that all come about?
- 1:47Yeah, it.
- 1:50It's funny, like you said,
- 1:51I'll talk about it.
- 1:52All that happened in the off season.
- 1:53It's really not that much
- 1:54different than what you
- 1:55typically see in other
- 1:56professional sports.
- 1:57I mean,
- 1:58the way I would best kind of liken
- 2:00it to is like if you're a
- 2:02coach in the NFL and you're
- 2:03a positions coach,
- 2:04like you're a D-backs coach
- 2:06or a linebackers coach,
- 2:07and you get the opportunity
- 2:08to go be a defensive
- 2:09coordinator for another team,
- 2:10it's just like it's an
- 2:11opportunity that you get a
- 2:12chance to go do and go take advantage of.
- 2:15And I was fortunate enough
- 2:17to be able to connect with
- 2:19Nick over here, the CEO of Proven,
- 2:21ultimately connect with
- 2:22Shane and the team here,
- 2:23have a few conversations
- 2:25and found that it was a really,
- 2:27really cool opportunity to
- 2:28come over here and be a
- 2:29part of this thing and the
- 2:30things they're building.
- 2:32And kind of like you said,
- 2:33it's way less to do with
- 2:35anything that happened at
- 2:37Comtrain and just a lot
- 2:38more to do with just an
- 2:40opportunity to take the
- 2:41next step in my career and
- 2:44learn some stuff from some
- 2:45other individuals and try
- 2:46and help lead this team as best I can.
- 2:50And like you said, in the NFL,
- 2:52like if you're a DB's coach
- 2:53and you get a chance for a
- 2:54promotion to defensive
- 2:56coordinator or something like that,
- 2:58you have to consider it.
- 3:00Yeah.
- 3:01In addition,
- 3:02if you're going to use the NFL analogy,
- 3:04like you may work under
- 3:05Sean McVay and you want the
- 3:09opportunity to maybe work
- 3:10under someone else with a
- 3:11different philosophy just
- 3:13to expand your own knowledge base.
- 3:16So what I want to ask you is,
- 3:18what has the major
- 3:19difference been since you
- 3:21got to Proven from CompTrain?
- 3:23And it doesn't mean that either are bad.
- 3:25It's just different.
- 3:28Yeah, no, it's really cool.
- 3:30So again,
- 3:31let's let the NFL analogy keep going.
- 3:33You'll have a coaching tree
- 3:34that you'll typically see.
- 3:36Some NFL coaches,
- 3:38they just produce coaching.
- 3:40head coaches and defensive
- 3:41coordinators at other
- 3:42places around the league.
- 3:43And you carry a lot of those
- 3:44principles and foundations
- 3:46that you learn from that
- 3:47coach into every job that you do.
- 3:49And having spent like three
- 3:52years up at Comptrain with
- 3:54Ben and before that Harry
- 3:56and that whole culture and
- 3:57environment up there has
- 3:59certainly shaped a massive
- 4:01part of the type of coach
- 4:02that I am and the way that
- 4:04I work with athletes and
- 4:05build relationships.
- 4:07And not to mention,
- 4:09getting a really good
- 4:10understanding about what
- 4:12that training looks like in
- 4:14those closed door rooms
- 4:15with the elite of the elite in our sport,
- 4:18which was incredible to be able to do.
- 4:20But then, like you said,
- 4:21the other thing is everyone in our space,
- 4:23all the coaches in our space,
- 4:26we all do it similar,
- 4:28but there's a different
- 4:29flavor to each one in the
- 4:30way that it goes.
- 4:32Being here at Proven with Shane,
- 4:35um and tia and and you see
- 4:38it when you get a chance to
- 4:39come to this building um
- 4:41the attention to detail and
- 4:43the just unbelievable focus
- 4:45on small things um is is
- 4:49just it's on a different
- 4:50level than I've seen before
- 4:52when it comes to the
- 4:54facility making sure no
- 4:57stone is unturned it's just
- 4:58been a really really neat way to kind of
- 5:01learn from them in the way
- 5:01that they've done the
- 5:02process for a long time.
- 5:04And at the same time,
- 5:05why would you not want to
- 5:07potentially have the
- 5:07opportunity to come and be in this role
- 5:10and get to peek behind the
- 5:11curtain of what the
- 5:12greatest CrossFit athlete
- 5:13of all time and her coach
- 5:15have been doing for a while,
- 5:17there's a bunch of
- 5:18different things that made this position,
- 5:20this opportunity extremely appealing.
- 5:22And just like you said, not better,
- 5:25not worse, just different.
- 5:27And I will forever,
- 5:28forever be indebted to Ben,
- 5:30the Comtrain community,
- 5:31CrossFit New England.
- 5:32I would not be the coach
- 5:33that I am today without the
- 5:35opportunities and the
- 5:37knowledge and the
- 5:38experience that I gained from them.
- 5:40And we'll continue to be
- 5:40friends with them for the
- 5:41rest of my career and the
- 5:42rest of my life.
- 5:42And I can't wait to have
- 5:43opportunities to go up
- 5:44there and go and see them.
- 5:45But yeah,
- 5:46it's just been a really neat way
- 5:47to kind of peek behind the
- 5:48curtain and see what very
- 5:52few people get to see on a
- 5:53day-to-day basis with how
- 5:54they handle business here.
- 5:58A quick question from the chat is,
- 6:01is Proven HQ an affiliate?
- 6:02And I believe it is.
- 6:03Yeah.
- 6:04Yeah, 100%.
- 6:05So the setup here is pretty gnarly.
- 6:06So it's similar to CrossFit
- 6:08New England in a way.
- 6:09It's just a little bit
- 6:10bigger and in a different
- 6:11part of the country.
- 6:12So we have one half of the building,
- 6:14which is our pro space.
- 6:16We've got four lanes of a
- 6:18semifinal style rig.
- 6:20We've got everything that
- 6:21our professional athletes
- 6:22need on one side.
- 6:23On the other side, we have another massive,
- 6:26two massive rigs along
- 6:28different ends of the wall
- 6:29for a full affiliate experience here.
- 6:31So,
- 6:32The perception is that it
- 6:35could be that this is just
- 6:36our pro training space,
- 6:37but it couldn't be further from that.
- 6:39We have one complete separate side.
- 6:40And then the other side,
- 6:42it's not like this is a,
- 6:42it's going to sound weird to say,
- 6:44it's not a competitor's
- 6:46affiliate or a competitor's gym.
- 6:48It is a CrossFit affiliate
- 6:50that is in Berry Hill in
- 6:51that community of Nashville.
- 6:53And we just happen to have
- 6:54on one side of the building,
- 6:55a couple of the fittest
- 6:57humans that have ever
- 6:57worked on the planet.
- 6:59It's pretty cool.
- 7:01So that leads me down to one
- 7:02of my next questions,
- 7:03and that is you come to
- 7:05Proven and you learn that
- 7:07there is a microscope on
- 7:09everything that they do.
- 7:11And with that comes misconceptions.
- 7:13And one thing that I found
- 7:15in the last couple months
- 7:17is Nick and Shane have been
- 7:19very quick to get out in front of it.
- 7:23They're not hiding anywhere from anything.
- 7:26and they go out they go on
- 7:27coffee pods and wads they
- 7:29go on different podcasts to
- 7:31clear the air and to give
- 7:33their side of the story and
- 7:35to explain things so the
- 7:36misconception is taken away
- 7:38what's it feel like for you
- 7:40coming into this
- 7:41environment and seeing the
- 7:42actions of your leaders I
- 7:44love it I absolutely love
- 7:45it I couldn't agree with
- 7:46how it's been handled more
- 7:47um and in defense of the
- 7:51media in our space
- 7:53Let's talk about the NFL again.
- 7:55In the NFL, you have 16,
- 7:5617 weeks of a season, 18 weeks,
- 7:5817 games in a year.
- 7:59So for that amount of time,
- 8:01the media and the NFL,
- 8:03they get to report on the
- 8:04sport that they are reporting on.
- 8:07in the office and then in
- 8:08crossfit and in the off
- 8:09season they'll talk about
- 8:10potential trade rumors but
- 8:11everything pretty much goes
- 8:12quiet in the off season the
- 8:13nfl media team gets a step
- 8:14back um when uh free agency
- 8:17isn't just like now ramps
- 8:18up they start to have more
- 8:19stuff to talk about and go
- 8:20from there our sport is
- 8:21weird like you guys really
- 8:23have maybe four weekends a
- 8:26year to really report on
- 8:28our sport and the things
- 8:29that are going on so
- 8:31outside of those four weekends a year
- 8:34if we as camps and athletes
- 8:36and coaches aren't
- 8:38available and open and
- 8:39transparent in what's going
- 8:41on in our communities and
- 8:42our camps and being able to
- 8:44hop on shows like this and
- 8:45talk to you guys,
- 8:46it's easy for other things
- 8:48to potentially just get
- 8:49spun up unintentionally.
- 8:52which is so cool that Nick and Shane,
- 8:54whenever these things do happen,
- 8:56they hop out, get out in front of it,
- 8:58have full transparency in
- 8:59the conversations in order
- 9:00to kind of squash that stuff.
- 9:01And I absolutely love it.
- 9:02I think that we always talk
- 9:05about professionalization of this sport.
- 9:06And I think a big part of that
- 9:08also comes with
- 9:09professionalization of the
- 9:11media and the relationship
- 9:12between the media and the
- 9:13athletes and the coaches
- 9:14and the camps and like
- 9:15having more clarity instead
- 9:17of us just going behind
- 9:19closed doors for the
- 9:20majority of the season and
- 9:21it's unintentional because
- 9:22all we want to do is build
- 9:23the fittest humans in the
- 9:25world to compete at the
- 9:26games but in doing that we
- 9:27basically stick our head in
- 9:28the sand and shut out the
- 9:29rest of the world whereas if we can
- 9:32be more transparent come on
- 9:34shows like this have nick
- 9:35and shane get out in front
- 9:36when things gets fun it
- 9:37allows for more
- 9:38transparency it allows for
- 9:40people to know what
- 9:41actually goes on at these
- 9:42places instead of like
- 9:43wondering what's happening
- 9:45um so long answer of and
- 9:47I've loved how they've
- 9:48handled it um it's been
- 9:49very cool to see and I
- 9:50couldn't agree more with
- 9:51how they've been handling
- 9:52these things so my last
- 9:54compare contrast question is
- 9:58It seemed when I talked to you last,
- 10:00at Comptron you had a lot
- 10:01of autonomy with your athletes.
- 10:04You kind of got to program
- 10:06directly for them, work with them,
- 10:08and Ben let you loose on that.
- 10:11Is it similar at Proven or
- 10:13is there more oversight here?
- 10:17It's similar,
- 10:18whereas each of the athletes here,
- 10:21they all have certain
- 10:22things that they need to
- 10:23work on and they need to touch.
- 10:25And then between Shane, Dwight Upshaw,
- 10:28one of the other coaches here, and myself,
- 10:30we have conversations every
- 10:32week and basically every
- 10:34day about what these days
- 10:36are looking like for each
- 10:37of these athletes.
- 10:38especially with um us coming
- 10:40over here kind of in the
- 10:41middle of their training
- 10:42season like it'd be silly
- 10:44to kind of just completely
- 10:45upend everything and do
- 10:46something completely
- 10:47different so we have
- 10:48conversations we find um
- 10:50the right places and ways
- 10:53for these athletes to be
- 10:54able to integrate their
- 10:55training together do pieces
- 10:57together without feeling
- 10:58like they're in the gym
- 11:00competing against each
- 11:01other every single day and
- 11:03there's a whole lot of
- 11:03other things that we do to
- 11:04try and mitigate
- 11:06the feeling that they're
- 11:06competing every single day
- 11:08because the training in this sport,
- 11:10I would argue,
- 11:12is probably one of the most
- 11:13difficult training sports
- 11:14in the world to do day in, day out.
- 11:17And if you are constantly
- 11:18feeling like you are
- 11:19competing against the
- 11:20people that you're here with every day,
- 11:21it's really tough to do so.
- 11:23Um,
- 11:23the autonomy is still there to provide
- 11:25our athletes with whatever
- 11:26it is that they specifically need.
- 11:28And then Shane Dwight and I find, um,
- 11:30intelligent areas for these things to, uh,
- 11:32merge together so that they
- 11:34can run with each other and
- 11:35have a little fun sometimes.
- 11:38And so how important is it
- 11:40for an elite athlete to
- 11:41have a community just like
- 11:42Joe average CrossFitter
- 11:44going to the gym every week?
- 11:46Um, it,
- 11:47it can get to be pretty lonely if
- 11:49you're just working out by
- 11:50yourself all the time.
- 11:52I completely agree.
- 11:55Two things.
- 11:55One,
- 11:55I love the fact that we do have an
- 11:57affiliate here and
- 11:57specifically now that we're
- 11:58like the open announcement
- 12:00is going to be here tomorrow.
- 12:01And it's, it's chaos out there right now.
- 12:03Like it is wild.
- 12:04The production that CrossFit
- 12:05brings to do these things.
- 12:06It's very, very cool.
- 12:07But I also love the fact
- 12:08that we're going to have Jay and Sid,
- 12:11Sid Wells hop in this
- 12:12workout and have their home.
- 12:15It's you don't get a home
- 12:17game in CrossFit.
- 12:18Like they get this one chance,
- 12:19like have a home game where
- 12:20our affiliate community is
- 12:22going to be there to support them.
- 12:24And then the other thing,
- 12:26how hard can it be to train
- 12:27and do this thing by yourself every day?
- 12:30It's always going to be each
- 12:32athlete dependent.
- 12:33Some people really, really agree with it.
- 12:35And you see some athletes in
- 12:36our space who have done it
- 12:37for a very long time at a
- 12:38very high level.
- 12:39Brent, Pat, and Ariel,
- 12:43who's here now doing the announcement,
- 12:45it's worked very well for them.
- 12:48I, however, think that
- 12:50the camp model and the small
- 12:53group training group model
- 12:56is the best way to do this
- 12:59for a couple reasons.
- 13:01One,
- 13:01if you look at any other individual sport,
- 13:06it's almost always done in
- 13:08a camp setting.
- 13:09The group effect is real.
- 13:10The group effect started
- 13:11with a group of marathon runners,
- 13:12I believe, somewhere up in Boston.
- 13:14They came together.
- 13:14They found out how awesome
- 13:15that was that you could
- 13:16pull each other along
- 13:17through workouts and get
- 13:18The performance gains from that.
- 13:22What we need to do here, though,
- 13:23is just make sure that,
- 13:24like I said earlier,
- 13:24that they are not feeling
- 13:25that they are competing every day.
- 13:27And we're doing a lot of
- 13:27things here for them to
- 13:28feel like they are supporting each other.
- 13:31They are pulling each other along.
- 13:33And ultimately,
- 13:34if we do this thing right
- 13:35and we do it well,
- 13:36when they get to semifinals,
- 13:39specifically the East and
- 13:41the females in the East for us,
- 13:43Hopefully they're in that last heat.
- 13:45They're able to look down the lane,
- 13:47see familiar faces,
- 13:48have a comfort in knowing
- 13:50that their teammates are
- 13:51out there with them and
- 13:52they're competing with
- 13:53their teammates against the
- 13:54test and not necessarily
- 13:55competing against each other.
- 13:57Because if each of them
- 13:58shows up to the semifinal
- 13:59and they all do their job,
- 14:00there's a games ticket
- 14:01there waiting for them.
- 14:02They're not taking it from each other.
- 14:04They just need to show up
- 14:05and do their job.
- 14:06So I think that the camp
- 14:08model and having support
- 14:10amongst your teammates is the way to do it,
- 14:13but it requires a lot of
- 14:14work to build the right
- 14:15culture so that it doesn't
- 14:16become something that's
- 14:17toxic and something that's
- 14:19overly competitive.
- 14:21So we have another question from the chat,
- 14:24and that is,
- 14:24a lot of camps seem to be a
- 14:26rotating door of athletes.
- 14:28Is that a benefit or
- 14:29something to try and avoid?
- 14:30That's a great question.
- 14:32I love that.
- 14:35If you were to ask me,
- 14:38who I hope is in our doors
- 14:40and in our camp five years from now,
- 14:42I hope that it's the exact
- 14:44same athletes that we have
- 14:45here right now.
- 14:46And if we have the bandwidth
- 14:48and the ability to add
- 14:49another athlete or two,
- 14:51if the fit is right, then that's great.
- 14:54But I genuinely think I
- 14:56would rather build the
- 14:57relationship with that
- 14:58athlete because every year
- 15:00you work with the same athlete,
- 15:01you start to really narrow
- 15:03in the target on how close
- 15:04you can get to optimizing
- 15:06what works really well for them.
- 15:08what I would not want to see
- 15:11for the athletes and for
- 15:12the coaches is hopping
- 15:14around from coach to coach to coach.
- 15:16Even if you have what you
- 15:17would consider is a down year,
- 15:20because in most cases,
- 15:22especially with the elite
- 15:23athletes that have there,
- 15:24they're already at the tip of the spear,
- 15:26a full, um,
- 15:29flip the table over approach
- 15:30for their programming may
- 15:31not be the best approach
- 15:33for them when in reality,
- 15:35it may just be a small
- 15:36adjustment here or a small
- 15:38adjustment there that you
- 15:39make over time over a
- 15:40number of years that really
- 15:42allows them to optimize
- 15:44their performance and go that route.
- 15:46So I think it would be better suited
- 15:51if you're able to keep the
- 15:52core of your team together,
- 15:53just like in any pro sport,
- 15:55keep the core of your team
- 15:56together for as long as possible,
- 15:58understanding that this is
- 15:59professional sports.
- 16:00Some people are going to go
- 16:01and some people are going to come.
- 16:03But what I want to do here,
- 16:06I have no interest in this
- 16:08being a rotating door of
- 16:09athletes coming and going.
- 16:10And I have no interest of this being
- 16:13Anything more than us being
- 16:15able to provide the high
- 16:17level of coaching and
- 16:19relationships that these
- 16:20athletes need and deserve in this sport.
- 16:22And we're only going to grow
- 16:23this camp at the rate that
- 16:25we still have the bandwidth
- 16:27and the ability and the
- 16:28time to still provide these
- 16:30athletes with what it is
- 16:31they need to be great at.
- 16:34So as director of elite athletes,
- 16:37is it your responsibility
- 16:39to make sure that all the needs are met?
- 16:43Yeah.
- 16:43So it's, um, yes.
- 16:45So in-house it's pretty easy to do.
- 16:47I have conversations with
- 16:48these guys every day and we
- 16:49have a couple of teen
- 16:49athletes here as well,
- 16:50which has been really,
- 16:51really fun to kind of build
- 16:52that relationship with, uh, uh,
- 16:54reuniting and getting to see Riley again.
- 16:56I worked with her, uh,
- 16:57years ago before she moved
- 16:58to Nashville and getting to meet RJ, uh,
- 17:00another really fit, talented kid here.
- 17:03Um,
- 17:04And then on top of that,
- 17:05the athletes that we do
- 17:06have that are remote,
- 17:07making sure that they feel
- 17:11like they are paid attention to,
- 17:12that they are not out in the wind.
- 17:14Because we have people all over the world.
- 17:16We have Kalyan, who's a Brazilian athlete,
- 17:18but he's overseas.
- 17:21And then Nick Matthew and
- 17:23Colton Merton and Olivia.
- 17:24So it's making sure that all
- 17:26those athletes do feel that
- 17:28they are receiving
- 17:29everything they need to
- 17:31perform at their very best.
- 17:36So you have athletes in your camp that...
- 17:41almost mythical right and
- 17:44and when I say that I'm
- 17:45like Olivia and Colton
- 17:47right they have gained this
- 17:49big following before even
- 17:52success on the floor per se
- 17:55right because of Colton and
- 17:57the pig farmer and the hard
- 17:58work and overcoming the
- 18:00height obstacle and all of
- 18:02that stuff and then Olivia
- 18:04this teen girl that like
- 18:05can lift a house and can do
- 18:08things that most teenage girls can't do.
- 18:11And it grows this mythical
- 18:14legend behind them.
- 18:16Coming to a camp where you
- 18:18have the greatest female
- 18:20athlete in the history of the sport,
- 18:22maybe athlete overall in the sport,
- 18:26Does that help because she's
- 18:28been through all that stuff
- 18:31and can assist with kind of
- 18:34that exposure that you get through that?
- 18:37Yeah,
- 18:38and just to kind of reiterate what
- 18:39you said there,
- 18:40would be a two-time
- 18:41multi-sport Olympic athlete
- 18:43if the rules for bobsled
- 18:44weren't so weird for her over there.
- 18:46But yeah, she's incredible.
- 18:48And getting to be here and
- 18:49have conversations with her and Shane,
- 18:52it's been really, really...
- 18:54interesting just how for
- 18:58being as successful and as
- 19:00dominant as she has been,
- 19:01how willing to help and be
- 19:04involved in conversations
- 19:05and be involved in the
- 19:07things that we're doing
- 19:08here to want everyone else
- 19:10to be better and to want
- 19:12nothing but happiness and
- 19:15fulfillment and longevity
- 19:16in their career for everyone that's here.
- 19:18It's a real genuine thing
- 19:21that you get from her when it comes to
- 19:25um supporting these athletes
- 19:26and being available for any
- 19:28questions and it I don't
- 19:31think you don't know what
- 19:33you're gonna get from
- 19:34someone until you get to
- 19:35meet them specifically
- 19:36someone who's been that
- 19:37dominant I've always been
- 19:38someone who's thought that
- 19:39um that level of dominance
- 19:42Um, it's hard to have that in any,
- 19:44in any endeavor in life and
- 19:46still have some balance on
- 19:47the other side of that of, because I mean,
- 19:50you hear of other elite
- 19:51athletes and other sports
- 19:52that have some demons that
- 19:55because the imbalance has
- 19:55just been so hard,
- 19:56but you don't see that from her.
- 20:00It's really been a pleasure
- 20:02and a joy to get to know her and, and,
- 20:05and see how she,
- 20:06how willing she is to be
- 20:08there for every single
- 20:09person in the camp.
- 20:11When you say other sports with demons,
- 20:13but I think we're facing it
- 20:15in CrossFit right now.
- 20:16Yeah.
- 20:17I think we're up to 12 or 13
- 20:19female athletes that
- 20:20competed at the Games last
- 20:21year are not competing this year.
- 20:24Yes.
- 20:24On the individual side.
- 20:27And to have someone who has
- 20:30been steady for so many
- 20:31years as your mentor and
- 20:35coach and whatever else
- 20:37other hat she wears has got
- 20:39to be a huge asset.
- 20:42It is.
- 20:43And what you brought up,
- 20:44it's almost like an
- 20:48epidemic of overstressed
- 20:49athletes in our sport and
- 20:51why that is happening.
- 20:52And I think a big part of it
- 20:54is a lot of athletes, I don't know,
- 20:59it's just,
- 21:00there's something about our sport.
- 21:01It's such a hard sport to
- 21:02train for that you have to
- 21:03be able to find a balance
- 21:04and enjoyment in what you do.
- 21:05I think there's so much else
- 21:08that you have to look at
- 21:09internally in order to be able to handle
- 21:12the the pressure and stress
- 21:14of the daily training in
- 21:15our sport and then the fact
- 21:16that our athletes only kind
- 21:17of like I said about the
- 21:18media like our athletes get
- 21:20really like these athletes
- 21:22they get one weekend a year
- 21:24to do their sport to
- 21:26potentially make it to to
- 21:28the game so that
- 21:29semi-finals weekend carries
- 21:32and it carries just so much
- 21:34to all these people that we
- 21:35have to do more work behind
- 21:37the scenes in order for them to
- 21:40perform free and not feel
- 21:42stressed because a stressed
- 21:43athlete will not perform.
- 21:45It will not happen.
- 21:47They're going to,
- 21:47when the margins are so
- 21:49narrow at these things and everyone's fit,
- 21:50if you are 2% down from
- 21:52where you feel you can be,
- 21:53it's going to be a fight to
- 21:54punch your way through.
- 21:55So we do a lot of work and
- 21:57have a lot of conversations
- 21:58here about properly
- 22:00defining success and what
- 22:01it means to these athletes,
- 22:03defining why they train,
- 22:04defining why they compete,
- 22:06And when you identify a lot of the reasons,
- 22:09and it goes back to the old adage,
- 22:11what's your why?
- 22:12But separate that into some
- 22:13more specifics.
- 22:14And it gives these athletes
- 22:15something to lean on so
- 22:17that that stress is not so
- 22:20overwhelming every single
- 22:21day that they get to a
- 22:23point where it's like,
- 22:24they just need to step away and back off.
- 22:26And it's just like,
- 22:27I hate to see good people
- 22:31and good athletes
- 22:33feel that level of stress and pressure.
- 22:37And I just want to help them
- 22:38have the tools to be able
- 22:41to manage it and understand
- 22:43it so they can continue to
- 22:44do the thing they love and
- 22:45not resent the thing that
- 22:47they love so much that got
- 22:48them into the sport in the first place.
- 22:51So two points on that.
- 22:53One,
- 22:53I believe this podcast is a semifinal
- 22:56podcast.
- 22:58We dive more into the
- 22:59semifinals than anybody
- 23:00else in the sport.
- 23:01Yeah, it's pretty cool.
- 23:03When I get to semis,
- 23:05I'm a nervous wreck because
- 23:07I've met all these people
- 23:09and I want the best for them.
- 23:11So I can't even imagine
- 23:13being the person because
- 23:15I'm a wreck after getting
- 23:16to know them all and
- 23:17hearing all their stories, right?
- 23:21The other thing is you walk your talk.
- 23:24And I've interviewed a lot of people.
- 23:27We're at close to 1,000 episodes now.
- 23:31And a lot of people say the
- 23:33things you're saying right now,
- 23:35but if you go to your Instagram,
- 23:37when you are congratulating your athletes,
- 23:42and I use that term loosely,
- 23:44like Sid wins TFX,
- 23:47your post was
- 23:48congratulating the other two
- 23:50podium athletes and not
- 23:52really focusing on Sid winning.
- 23:55When you made a post about Lucy,
- 23:59not once did you mention
- 24:00she won the games.
- 24:02It was about all the other
- 24:03stuff around it that you
- 24:04were so proud of her about.
- 24:07And so when you're not
- 24:09defining success by the
- 24:11finish or the podium or that,
- 24:14you are truly living that creed.
- 24:18Because in your own posts
- 24:20and in your own life,
- 24:21you're not focusing on that.
- 24:23You're focusing on the person.
- 24:26yeah um winning is not what
- 24:31we talk about on an
- 24:32everyday basis winning is
- 24:34not the ultimate goal
- 24:35winning is not something
- 24:36that I'm going to look back
- 24:3720 years from now and and
- 24:40be the focus point and then
- 24:42on the other side of that
- 24:42coin I think it was a john
- 24:44wooden quote it's like I
- 24:44won't know if I've done my
- 24:46job well um for another 20
- 24:49years like I want these
- 24:50athletes to be able to look
- 24:52on back on this time in their life
- 24:54and this experience that
- 24:55they got to have and be
- 24:57grateful and thankful that
- 24:58they got the chance to do
- 25:00it and just being able to
- 25:03be their coach to be through it as well.
- 25:06And the catch to that is if you really,
- 25:08really truly buy into that
- 25:09where I don't measure
- 25:11success based on what the
- 25:12leaderboard is at the end
- 25:13of the weekend or who's at
- 25:14the top of the podium,
- 25:16but by all the other little
- 25:17things along the way,
- 25:20and how I define success for
- 25:21myself and how they define
- 25:22success for themselves,
- 25:24by buying into that,
- 25:27you will end up reaching
- 25:28those big goals that you
- 25:29set for yourself because it
- 25:30is a freeing way to go
- 25:32through life so that you
- 25:33don't have this pressure and stress.
- 25:35When we talk about the goals though,
- 25:37and this is something that
- 25:38I did pull from Ben when I was out there,
- 25:39he said, when you have these big goals,
- 25:42don't pretend that they're not there.
- 25:44Don't pretend you don't want
- 25:45to win the games.
- 25:46That would be silly to
- 25:47pretend that that's not in
- 25:48the conversation.
- 25:50but it's like, put it up on a shelf.
- 25:52Like imagine you're in your
- 25:53room and you have a shelf up on your room,
- 25:55take that goal, put it up on the shelf,
- 25:57take a look at it every once in a while,
- 25:59let it guide some of the
- 26:00processes and the steps
- 26:01that you're going to do in
- 26:02your life in order to kind
- 26:04of set yourself up for that.
- 26:06But it shouldn't be the
- 26:07thing that's in your mirror
- 26:08every day that that's
- 26:10driving you because success
- 26:12is so fleeting.
- 26:14Like you can ask people who
- 26:15have won the games.
- 26:17That moment is incredible, but like,
- 26:19Two weeks after,
- 26:20it's just like it's not there anymore.
- 26:24And you can talk to Jordan
- 26:25and you hear from Kobe.
- 26:27Like Kobe said, the process is the dream.
- 26:28Showing up to training every single day,
- 26:30that's the dream.
- 26:32The success is a very cool thing,
- 26:34but it's so fleeting and
- 26:36it's not fulfilling at a
- 26:38way that's going to really
- 26:40hit you where it matters.
- 26:42And if you buy into the other stuff,
- 26:44you end up somehow,
- 26:45some way getting closer to
- 26:48that big goal that's on the
- 26:50shelf up there.
- 26:51And I truly, truly mean that for sure.
- 26:55Well, and like I said, in the,
- 26:56in the example, um,
- 26:58Lucy did win the games last year.
- 27:00Sid did win TFX.
- 27:02Like that is a by-product of
- 27:05caring about the individual
- 27:07in more than just as a person to podium.
- 27:10Um, yeah.
- 27:11And the TFX, yeah.
- 27:13And the TFX one, like, um,
- 27:15giving credit to, um,
- 27:16the other two athletes that were there.
- 27:18Um, it's just, um, it was Casey and Abby,
- 27:21like,
- 27:23I want them to also know
- 27:24whether or not they ever
- 27:25see the post or they care at all.
- 27:27They should know how fun it
- 27:30is to just get on the floor and compete.
- 27:31And that weekend was a competition.
- 27:34They were haymakers left and right.
- 27:38between those guys going for it.
- 27:39So it's like,
- 27:40know that just the ability to
- 27:42get there and compete is
- 27:44what allows you to go home
- 27:45and put your head on your
- 27:46pillow and go to sleep calmly.
- 27:47If you're first, second, third,
- 27:48whatever that ends up being,
- 27:50as long as you know that you showed up,
- 27:52you gave the highest effort you could,
- 27:53you executed well,
- 27:54and you were able to
- 27:55compete and feel like yourself,
- 27:57it's hard to walk away from
- 27:59those things disappointed.
- 28:02All right,
- 28:02let's move on to something a
- 28:04little bit different,
- 28:04and that is you have a big week.
- 28:06Proven has a big week.
- 28:09You mentioned that out there,
- 28:11there's chaos going on.
- 28:13CrossFit is there with their
- 28:14production team.
- 28:17It's been a crazy week from
- 28:19a shift of what they were doing.
- 28:21Tia was supposed to be in it
- 28:23because of the wrist injury.
- 28:24She could not be there.
- 28:27My first question about that
- 28:28is you're in the open.
- 28:30It's top 25%.
- 28:33Is it more important to get
- 28:34through the open healthy or
- 28:36or get through it well yeah
- 28:40um I think this open this
- 28:44open probably more than
- 28:45others has shown a very
- 28:46clear in my opinion shift
- 28:49in how hq views the open
- 28:54the first two events have
- 28:55been extra and I like it
- 28:57like I think it is for the
- 28:58good of the community as a
- 29:00whole the first two events
- 29:02from an affiliate standpoint
- 29:04are so approachable and
- 29:06easy to run in an affiliate
- 29:08since there's been no floor plans,
- 29:10no tape marks,
- 29:10like it is no different
- 29:12than you just setting up your classes.
- 29:14You normally would.
- 29:15It's kind of like when it was the old five,
- 29:16um,
- 29:16five workout open days where there was
- 29:18no floor plans and you can just go at it.
- 29:22And the movements have been extremely, um,
- 29:26user friendly, um,
- 29:27where you have just the
- 29:28burpees and the dumbbell
- 29:29snatch and week one.
- 29:30You have the row, deadlift,
- 29:32and double unders.
- 29:33So you introduce a little
- 29:34skill with the double unders,
- 29:35but it's in a fashion where
- 29:37people can work through a
- 29:39set if they don't have them
- 29:40to still kind of get a workout in.
- 29:43And then this week,
- 29:44I'm guessing that we'll see
- 29:46some more skills introduced.
- 29:49I mean,
- 29:50I feel like you have to hang from
- 29:51something in the open at
- 29:52some point in order to have
- 29:54this be the first
- 29:56qualification stage of the games.
- 29:58But I genuinely think that
- 30:00the way it's been set up,
- 30:01this is the leaderboard.
- 30:03I know we just talked about
- 30:04the leaderboard placement
- 30:05is a lot less important.
- 30:08This open it feels than it
- 30:09has been in previous ones
- 30:12with the quarterfinals.
- 30:14if the programming for
- 30:15quarterfinals stays similar
- 30:16to how it has been in the past,
- 30:16that is a clear delineation.
- 30:18Like the quarterfinal
- 30:18workouts are no joke.
- 30:21That is where you see the loading,
- 30:24the skill,
- 30:24the volume get to a point where
- 30:27what makes those athletes
- 30:29special starts to get on display.
- 30:31So it really, really is about
- 30:33just feeling good about
- 30:35giving a good effort,
- 30:36getting some practice
- 30:38videoing your stuff
- 30:39properly for quarterfinals
- 30:41and just getting through the open clean.
- 30:43You train through the open
- 30:44and you get yourself ready for quarters.
- 30:47And healthy.
- 30:49Yes.
- 30:49Healthy.
- 30:50Yeah.
- 30:50So like in for Tia's example, it's like,
- 30:52um, it really is just that.
- 30:54Will she be able to do the workout,
- 30:56whatever it is?
- 30:57I'm sure she will.
- 30:58Would she have been able to
- 31:00do it at the level that she
- 31:01holds herself to in the, uh, and, and,
- 31:05and like feel confident
- 31:06enough to give the show
- 31:07that she would want to give
- 31:09and compete on the floor?
- 31:11like probably not to what
- 31:13the standard she holds herself.
- 31:14So it's really just about
- 31:16take a few extra days,
- 31:17probably get to Sunday or Monday,
- 31:19give the wrist a few more days.
- 31:21Um,
- 31:21and then just be able to kind of do the
- 31:22workout, get through it healthy.
- 31:24Um, I have an athlete.
- 31:25So Lucy, you mentioned earlier, um,
- 31:28for anyone that is follows her, um,
- 31:30she had,
- 31:31she was 15th in the world in week one, um,
- 31:33in the world, like absolutely smashed it.
- 31:35Um,
- 31:35and then had a massive drop off in week
- 31:37two and it's because she's sick.
- 31:39But the good news is, um,
- 31:41We only need to get her in the top 25%,
- 31:43which she'll be able to do
- 31:44as sick as she is right now,
- 31:47just to get a score on the board.
- 31:48We're just talking.
- 31:49The whole idea is just get her healthy,
- 31:50so that way she feels good
- 31:51going into quarters as well.
- 31:53Yeah, and so before I jump to quarters,
- 31:56because I think there's
- 31:57some important questions there.
- 32:01So this week,
- 32:03I talked about this with Ariel.
- 32:06It's really an honor to be
- 32:08picked to do a CrossFit announcement.
- 32:10Yeah.
- 32:11And Ariel kind of expanded that by saying,
- 32:14it's really important to be
- 32:15the last week.
- 32:16Like that's where they let
- 32:17the legends come in.
- 32:18And, you know, she,
- 32:20she referenced when rich
- 32:22and Sam and Annie and all
- 32:24the champions went together
- 32:26in one announcement,
- 32:29although it wasn't initially planned,
- 32:31Sydney and Jay get an
- 32:33opportunity to do an,
- 32:34a CrossFit open announcement.
- 32:37Jay said,
- 32:38came on the scene in a ball
- 32:40of fire last year and has
- 32:44proven in the offseason he
- 32:46is someone to contend with.
- 32:48Yeah.
- 32:49And this could be a nice
- 32:50spotlight for him.
- 32:51With Sydney, you know, in all honesty,
- 32:53she's been in her sister's
- 32:54shadows for a long time,
- 32:56but she made the games last year.
- 32:57Brooke did not.
- 32:59And it's an opportunity for
- 33:01her to show her stuff on a big stage.
- 33:05As the director of elite athletes,
- 33:07how do you feel for your
- 33:09athletes getting this opportunity?
- 33:11I'm psyched.
- 33:12I'm so psyched.
- 33:12Like I mentioned earlier,
- 33:13it's like a home game in a
- 33:14sport where they're going
- 33:15to be able to do this in
- 33:16their own comfort and their
- 33:17own affiliate with their coaches around.
- 33:19And talking about those two,
- 33:21Jay is a gnarly fit dude.
- 33:23He's always been a fit guy.
- 33:25But when he connected with Shane,
- 33:28they're...
- 33:30Something agreed really well
- 33:32with that relationship and
- 33:34with Shane's ability to
- 33:35kind of work with him where
- 33:37he was able to show what he can really,
- 33:40really do last year.
- 33:41And the dude is fit.
- 33:42And you can see it.
- 33:43I know I said the open
- 33:44leaderboard is not that important,
- 33:45but the scores he's put up
- 33:46in the open so far
- 33:48Again, it shows.
- 33:49He is a fit dude and I'm
- 33:51very excited for the rest
- 33:52of the world to get to see
- 33:55him do his thing in the spotlight.
- 33:57Then from a person standpoint,
- 33:59he's the sweetest man.
- 34:01I don't think I've ever seen
- 34:03him not smile.
- 34:04He's just such a nice,
- 34:06awesome person that I hope
- 34:07that also comes through in
- 34:09the interviews and the
- 34:10performance and people
- 34:11watching him do his thing
- 34:12because he deserves to be
- 34:13up there for sure.
- 34:15Sydney Wells, you mentioned it.
- 34:22Yes,
- 34:22Brooke was here for a long time and
- 34:24Brooke was here first and
- 34:25Brooke has had a ton of success.
- 34:28She's going to go down as
- 34:29one of the legends of the
- 34:30sport for as long as she's
- 34:31been around and the success
- 34:32that she's had and the
- 34:33impact that she's had on the floor.
- 34:35But Sydney is crazy fit.
- 34:38From the outside looking in
- 34:40until I get to see it every day,
- 34:42I saw her at semifinals a
- 34:43little bit last year,
- 34:44but it wasn't my focus,
- 34:45so I didn't get a really
- 34:46good chance to see what was going on.
- 34:48The girls fit, man.
- 34:50She is no joke.
- 34:51You do not accidentally
- 34:54qualify for the CrossFit
- 34:55Games this day and age.
- 34:57There is no accidental
- 34:58qualifying for the Games.
- 35:00She puts in the work every day.
- 35:01Her and Sid McAlishan have a
- 35:04great relationship here,
- 35:05and they push each other every day,
- 35:06and it's fun to see Sid Wells
- 35:09get out there,
- 35:10do her thing on the stage
- 35:12and be able to show that like, no,
- 35:15it's not a fluke that she
- 35:16made it last year.
- 35:16She is the real deal.
- 35:18You don't get handed a game
- 35:19spot unless you earn it.
- 35:22I completely agree.
- 35:24We were privileged enough to
- 35:25do her first-ever podcast.
- 35:27She's an amazing individual.
- 35:30And watching her at semis,
- 35:31if you look at the way she has performed,
- 35:34she has one hole.
- 35:36She has one hole that gets her every year.
- 35:38And other than that,
- 35:39her performances are top-notch.
- 35:43She is super fit.
- 35:45a hundred percent and what
- 35:46she did last year is one of
- 35:48the most we're actually
- 35:49talking about it earlier uh
- 35:50today one of the most
- 35:51impressive things I've ever
- 35:52seen I don't think you'll
- 35:53ever see it happen at a
- 35:54semi-final again where um
- 35:56she had the issue in the
- 35:57ruck ring muscle-ups last
- 35:58year which placed her so
- 35:59far down on the leaderboard
- 36:01to then keep her wits about
- 36:03her for the remainder of
- 36:03that weekend and not let that one event
- 36:06crush her come back win an
- 36:08event later in the
- 36:09semi-final and like get
- 36:12herself in there and she
- 36:12wasn't the last person to
- 36:13qualify like she was in
- 36:15there so it it was a
- 36:18testament to her ability as
- 36:19a competitor um and she's
- 36:21been competing for a long
- 36:21time she was a d1 track athlete like
- 36:24She knows what she's doing.
- 36:25And again,
- 36:26I'm psyched to see her and see
- 36:28Jay in the spotlight,
- 36:30be able to throw down.
- 36:32It's cool that Roman's a fit dude.
- 36:34I'm excited to see Jay get a
- 36:36chance to do it next to him.
- 36:38And Ariel's a total absolute
- 36:40badass and just one of the
- 36:42nicest people in the space
- 36:43that you'll ever meet.
- 36:44And her husband is just a
- 36:45cool dude as well.
- 36:46So it's a really nice group
- 36:48that we have here to do this.
- 36:50And we're lucky to get to
- 36:51host the whole thing.
- 36:53Last comment, and it's just about Jay.
- 36:55A lot of people have come to
- 36:58the games and had a good year.
- 37:01What Jay did to back it up
- 37:02at Rogue proved to me that
- 37:04he's not going anywhere.
- 37:07He is here to stay, and he's still young.
- 37:10yeah he's the real deal and
- 37:12and not to mention like
- 37:13he's in town he'll be here
- 37:14through quarters um maddie
- 37:16sturt also um who's been in
- 37:18the space for a long time
- 37:19the four-time games athlete
- 37:20I think um is looking fit
- 37:23too and they train together
- 37:24and she's in town as well
- 37:25so it's just like we've got
- 37:27a really really good thing
- 37:28going here and all of the
- 37:29elite athletes that we have
- 37:31on our team that we get the
- 37:31chance to work with and
- 37:32even some of our
- 37:33developmental athletes that
- 37:34I know that are going to be
- 37:35in semis that I've built
- 37:35relationships with this year it's like
- 37:37We're really lucky with the
- 37:40feel of the people that we have here,
- 37:42and we couldn't be happier.
- 37:45So I'm going to move on to
- 37:46your core athletes that you
- 37:48had at Comtrain,
- 37:50which was Sidney McElishan,
- 37:52Caroline Stanley, and Lucy McGonigal.
- 37:55Yep.
- 37:56All three followed you to Proven, correct?
- 37:59They did.
- 38:00Lucky me.
- 38:01So...
- 38:03that says a lot about your
- 38:05coaching ability and the
- 38:06relationships that you
- 38:07build with your athletes
- 38:09that they were willing to pick up where,
- 38:11I mean,
- 38:12Sydney moved from Boston to
- 38:14Nashville to come with you.
- 38:18What does that mean to you
- 38:19to see your athletes that
- 38:21dedicated to you as a coach?
- 38:23It's awesome.
- 38:24It like, it truly means the world.
- 38:26And I tell them, I was like, like,
- 38:28they're gonna have to get
- 38:30rid of me like I'm in this
- 38:31with them for the long haul
- 38:33and I told sid from day one
- 38:34I was like imagine and I've
- 38:35told this to caroline and
- 38:36lucy like I hope that in 10
- 38:38years we're still doing
- 38:40this together because if in
- 38:4110 years we're still doing
- 38:42this together that means
- 38:43we've done some pretty dope
- 38:44stuff along the way and for
- 38:45them to still to like have
- 38:47that level of confidence to
- 38:49to want to keep this thing
- 38:50going and and feel
- 38:52comfortable and confident in
- 38:55what I can do for them and
- 38:56how much I'm invested in
- 38:58them um is so so cool and
- 39:00for sid to like you said
- 39:02like she picked up um like
- 39:04she had established like
- 39:05some really close friends
- 39:06and relationships um when
- 39:09we were up there um and for
- 39:10her to basically say um
- 39:14yeah wherever you go I go
- 39:15um it's just like as a
- 39:17coach and especially coming
- 39:20off how the season went
- 39:21last year where it's so easy
- 39:24And it happens where other
- 39:26coaches and other camps are
- 39:28going to see that as a sign
- 39:29and an opportunity to poach
- 39:32an athlete away.
- 39:33And those things tried to happen.
- 39:37And for her to still have
- 39:38that level of confidence in
- 39:39what we're doing and what
- 39:40we're building and the
- 39:41relationship that we've had,
- 39:42it means everything.
- 39:45everything to me.
- 39:46And that is a really big
- 39:48measure of my success as a coach.
- 39:50And then the fun part on the
- 39:52side is the stuff that
- 39:54happens on the floor.
- 39:55But yeah, Caroline, Lucy, Sid, they rock.
- 40:00We're going to be doing this
- 40:00together for a very, very long time,
- 40:02I hope.
- 40:03And like I told them,
- 40:03they're going to have to
- 40:04get rid of me because I'm
- 40:05in this for the long haul.
- 40:07So I'm going to go down
- 40:08through a couple of things
- 40:09with each athlete that you
- 40:11brought with you.
- 40:12And we talked about Sid winning TFX,
- 40:15which was a nice bounce
- 40:17back for her after this,
- 40:19because we followed her all last season.
- 40:20I know podcast.
- 40:23And, and it was,
- 40:24it was heartbreaking at semis.
- 40:27And so it was really good to
- 40:29see her get a win just,
- 40:32just for confidence purposes and,
- 40:34But I was scrolling through
- 40:35Instagram today,
- 40:36and I'm going to share a
- 40:37screen real quick.
- 40:39She made a post.
- 40:41The knock on her has always
- 40:42been her running ability.
- 40:45She made a post today.
- 40:46I'm going to bring it up here.
- 40:49Of her running on an air runner.
- 40:51Yeah.
- 40:54And more than the speed, it's the form.
- 40:58Yeah.
- 40:59Like the form has completely changed.
- 41:01And it got me so excited
- 41:03about her season coming up.
- 41:06You as her coach,
- 41:07are you seeing the same thing?
- 41:09Oh my God.
- 41:10Yeah.
- 41:10So this has been,
- 41:12so this is what you get
- 41:15when you're able to invest
- 41:17the time in an athlete and
- 41:18you build that relationship
- 41:19and the coach and athletes stay together.
- 41:21This has been something that
- 41:23has been in the works.
- 41:24This is our third year
- 41:25working together now for years.
- 41:29So completely rewire the way
- 41:31an athlete runs and they do
- 41:33it under fatigue,
- 41:34what you're seeing here.
- 41:35It's easy in drills.
- 41:35Like we can drill this thing out.
- 41:38But you look at her landing
- 41:39position on the side,
- 41:39but it's like that midfoot
- 41:41like landing position,
- 41:42the ability to pull through,
- 41:44like it's awesome.
- 41:46She has spent so much time at the track.
- 41:49We are there all the time.
- 41:50Like this has been a focus
- 41:51and it just takes time for
- 41:53these things to really
- 41:54click so that you don't
- 41:55have to think about it.
- 41:57And this video is awesome
- 41:58because this is under fatigue.
- 42:00These are hard interval
- 42:01repeats that she's doing
- 42:02and she's still able to
- 42:03maintain that form under
- 42:05that type of fatigue.
- 42:06This is one of like,
- 42:08lifts are cool.
- 42:09This was awesome.
- 42:13And lifts have never been her problem.
- 42:17No.
- 42:17Yeah.
- 42:19She is a,
- 42:21she is a crazy strong and powerful lady.
- 42:26The sandbag event,
- 42:27the sandbag ladder where she got fourth,
- 42:29I think that you're like, she is a,
- 42:31she will always be a strong lady.
- 42:34What's making her extremely
- 42:35special and more dangerous now is
- 42:37We're bringing the other
- 42:38things up to match what she's really,
- 42:40really good at.
- 42:42And if the thing she's good
- 42:43at just stays here and we
- 42:44bring up the floor on just
- 42:45these other things,
- 42:46she's a different athlete.
- 42:47And this is such a cool example of that.
- 42:49She has worked so hard on her running.
- 42:53This was so cool to see.
- 42:55After following her last year,
- 42:56I will always be one of her biggest fans.
- 42:58And I'm so stoked to see this season.
- 43:03So if we move on to Caroline Stanley...
- 43:06Because we're running low on time.
- 43:07Every time I talk to you,
- 43:08time just flies by.
- 43:10It does.
- 43:14So maybe we need to make
- 43:14this a more frequent occurrence.
- 43:18I'm good, man.
- 43:20Caroline Stanley makes it to
- 43:22the games her first year
- 43:23ever last year and finishes
- 43:26at least through one cut.
- 43:29That has to be a huge win for a rookie.
- 43:32Yeah, for sure.
- 43:34That relationship and that experience.
- 43:37Yeah, it's been pretty cool.
- 43:38So with Caroline,
- 43:40we were put in touch by a
- 43:43third party person who
- 43:44owned an affiliate that she
- 43:45was working out at.
- 43:46Caroline had been to Semis a
- 43:47couple of years and was
- 43:49around the same spot both times,
- 43:51wasn't able to crack through.
- 43:52They reached out, we got in touch.
- 43:54started working out working
- 43:55together um and it was just
- 43:57great like she's she's such
- 43:59a really just genuine
- 44:00down-to-earth person and a
- 44:02lot of it just has to do
- 44:03like her family is great um
- 44:05like they now they own this
- 44:07massive farm like this
- 44:08cattle farm that she works
- 44:10on and everything but she's
- 44:13uh great and then what you
- 44:14said at the games like the
- 44:16cuts at the games
- 44:18um,
- 44:18regardless what your opinion is on them.
- 44:20And we could probably talk
- 44:20about that in another episode, um,
- 44:23is that when you get there,
- 44:24that is the fear.
- 44:25It's like,
- 44:25you want to be able to take the
- 44:26whole test.
- 44:27You train all year.
- 44:28You want to get to the games.
- 44:29You're like,
- 44:29I want to take every test that
- 44:30they can throw at me possible,
- 44:32no matter what it is.
- 44:33But the catch is the last few years,
- 44:34like you gotta be able to
- 44:35get there to be able to do them.
- 44:37So she went into the final
- 44:40event of day two for, um, Helena, um,
- 44:43um in like 31st or just on
- 44:45the outside looking in
- 44:47knowing that she needed to
- 44:48do her thing in order to
- 44:49get herself to the next day
- 44:50to buy three more events to
- 44:51be able to showcase her
- 44:52stuff a little bit more um
- 44:54she's one of the most
- 44:55competitive people I've
- 44:56ever met in my life um and
- 44:59when she stepped out onto
- 45:01the floor for that event um
- 45:02I knew we were going to be
- 45:04in good hands and she
- 45:04chased down someone in that
- 45:05third round and was able to
- 45:06pull ahead so it was
- 45:08Last year was really cool
- 45:09getting to experience that
- 45:11for the first time with her at semis,
- 45:14seeing her experience it
- 45:15through the games.
- 45:16She's a fitter version of
- 45:17herself this year,
- 45:18and she's a more experienced athlete now,
- 45:20which for her is really,
- 45:21really dangerous for everyone else.
- 45:24So the crazy thing for her
- 45:25is she's in the East,
- 45:28which is murderer's row if
- 45:30you're a female athlete.
- 45:31We hear about all these
- 45:32people that are not competing this year.
- 45:34Only one of them is from the East.
- 45:38Right.
- 45:38The East is not changing.
- 45:41She made it through there
- 45:42last year and it was murderers row then.
- 45:44Yeah.
- 45:46One,
- 45:46how did that experience help her to
- 45:48get to the game or get her at the games?
- 45:50And this year,
- 45:51do you just kind of put that
- 45:54aside and just you against you?
- 45:56Yeah.
- 45:58The margins are so narrow at
- 46:00any competition you go to,
- 46:01whether it is TFX or semifinals, um,
- 46:04the the names that you see
- 46:06at east is that kind of
- 46:07murderer's row type of
- 46:09thing but at the same time like you
- 46:12you never are competing
- 46:13against someone else in the field.
- 46:15As weird as that sounds,
- 46:16like you each have your own lane.
- 46:17It's not like football or basketball,
- 46:19or like you can impede the
- 46:20progress of the person next to you.
- 46:21It's like,
- 46:22it's silly to think that you could, you,
- 46:26can you imagine full contact crossfit?
- 46:28Someone goes three lanes down,
- 46:29throws a dumbbell out of the way.
- 46:31But yeah, so it's like,
- 46:32you have to just go there
- 46:33and do your thing.
- 46:34And last year with Caroline, we knew that,
- 46:39what she potentially was
- 46:40gonna do I remember telling
- 46:42someone I think it was like
- 46:42patrick clark I was like
- 46:43she's gonna go there and
- 46:44she's gonna she's gonna
- 46:45ruin someone's weekend that
- 46:46doesn't know it yet because
- 46:47I know what she's bringing
- 46:49to this competition and the
- 46:50good what's kind of cool is
- 46:52like I still don't think
- 46:53anyone knows anything about
- 46:55her or who she is or what
- 46:57she's capable of to to show
- 46:59up to this thing and when
- 47:01she's going to compete it
- 47:02really just is like she's
- 47:03going to be on the floor
- 47:04Her and I from a coach competitor,
- 47:06a coach athlete standpoint
- 47:08of how we manage these
- 47:09weekends and the ups and
- 47:10downs of these things is
- 47:12better than it was last year.
- 47:14So like her ability to show
- 47:16up and compete on the floor.
- 47:18is one of the better
- 47:19athletes I've seen she will
- 47:21always compete something
- 47:23better than she trains it
- 47:24she is a a ptp or a
- 47:26primetime player she shows
- 47:28up under the lights and
- 47:28gets the job done so in
- 47:30this murderer's row of the
- 47:32east I promise you she's
- 47:33going to be kind of thought
- 47:34about at the back end of
- 47:36that that talent list when
- 47:38in reality like no she's
- 47:40right square in the middle
- 47:41of it and she has home run
- 47:43potential which is always
- 47:44dangerous in a semi-final
- 47:47not every day I get to hear
- 47:48a dickie v reference in the
- 47:49middle of a podcast man I
- 47:53listened to so much dick
- 47:54vital when I was growing up
- 47:55calling terps basketball
- 47:56games terps versus duke in
- 47:58carolina oh that's why I
- 48:01love having you on um
- 48:04So let's move on to Lucy.
- 48:08Lucy is a teen athlete.
- 48:11If you were not paying
- 48:12attention at the games last year,
- 48:14you missed one hell of a
- 48:16competition in the 16,
- 48:1817-year-old division with
- 48:20Lucy and Trista.
- 48:22yeah and Lucy prevailed um
- 48:26she competed in Europe last
- 48:28year at the semifinals
- 48:30probably another murderers
- 48:31row of athletes um she's
- 48:35gonna have to come out of
- 48:36that region again this year
- 48:37uh and she's so young so
- 48:42how do you like
- 48:43realistically set
- 48:45expectations for her going
- 48:47into semis this year
- 48:49Yeah.
- 48:49So last year semis was, um,
- 48:52zero expectations.
- 48:53So that was the last semifinal of, uh,
- 48:56the final weekend of
- 48:57semifinals last year.
- 48:58We had got to watch everyone else go.
- 49:00So we went into that, um, just like, Hey,
- 49:03I want you to just get used
- 49:04to being in the warmup area
- 49:06and seeing Annie Thor's
- 49:07daughter warming up next to
- 49:09you and Gabby Magala and Laura,
- 49:11like just get used to being
- 49:13there and seeing that these
- 49:14athletes are in the same
- 49:15competition that you're in.
- 49:17Um,
- 49:18that was it it was like just
- 49:19go there have some fun and
- 49:21let's just get some
- 49:22competition experience in
- 49:24that stage we learned a ton
- 49:27I didn't over strategize
- 49:28anything for I let her go
- 49:29out there take some swings
- 49:30when she wanted to and it
- 49:32was just a really cool
- 49:32experience by the end of
- 49:34the weekend to go through
- 49:36that with her um
- 49:38semi-finals this year the
- 49:39goal is just to be able to
- 49:41go and compete um I want
- 49:45her to be able to go there
- 49:46and have this more of a
- 49:48of an experience like we
- 49:49treated the games last year, where it is,
- 49:51hey,
- 49:52this is how we want to handle this thing.
- 49:53This is how we want to go in this.
- 49:55This is going to be our
- 49:57if she qualifies through there, it's like,
- 49:59we're able to go there and
- 50:00feel like we are competing
- 50:02the whole time.
- 50:02Not necessarily that we are
- 50:04just along for the ride.
- 50:06However,
- 50:07that works out at the end of the
- 50:08weekend is irrelevant.
- 50:09I mean, if she cracks through,
- 50:10I wouldn't be surprised.
- 50:12It would be cool.
- 50:12If not also really doesn't
- 50:14matter at this point,
- 50:15like the runway on her
- 50:17career is so long that we're really just,
- 50:20picking up experience points
- 50:21along the way.
- 50:22But I can tell you that it's
- 50:24gonna be a mindset approach
- 50:26where she's gonna show up
- 50:27to try and compete this year,
- 50:28have some fun.
- 50:30We're gonna take measured
- 50:31risks this year and have a
- 50:33little bit more of a dialed
- 50:35approach of how we wanna handle this.
- 50:37um and go that route and a
- 50:38quick backstop that 1670
- 50:40division with her interest
- 50:41last year was probably the
- 50:42best race of the games like
- 50:45and I know tristan and her
- 50:46family from years ago a
- 50:47comp train before they
- 50:48moved up with uh with adam
- 50:49and them um it was awesome
- 50:52to watch that was so fun
- 50:54yeah yeah if you don't if
- 50:56you're not paying attention
- 50:57to the age groups you're
- 50:58missing out on a lot there
- 51:00are some good runs in the age groups
- 51:02There are.
- 51:03And we were there for all of it,
- 51:06and it was so much fun to be there.
- 51:07But shoot, I lost my track.
- 51:12So you have these three
- 51:13athletes all last year.
- 51:14And even with three athletes,
- 51:16you have to go to the East.
- 51:18You have to go to the West.
- 51:20You have to go to Europe
- 51:21three weeks in a row.
- 51:23And you're kind of on the
- 51:24run for three weeks of your
- 51:26life during semis.
- 51:28This year,
- 51:29you're now at proven over all
- 51:31elite athletes.
- 51:33So how do you keep balance?
- 51:36And now you're over so many
- 51:38more athletes than the
- 51:40three you had last year.
- 51:41Yeah, so I'm really,
- 51:43really lucky with the
- 51:44coaching team that we have
- 51:46under this proven banner.
- 51:48So the obvious ones are myself, Dwight,
- 51:51and Shane, who are in-house here.
- 51:55The good news is our CEO,
- 51:56like get you a CEO that can do both.
- 51:58Like he was a coach for
- 51:59years before he stepped out
- 52:00of that role and into this role.
- 52:02So we have Nick that is able
- 52:04to step in and be a
- 52:05world-class coach for some
- 52:07of these athletes if and when needed.
- 52:09our remote coaches that we
- 52:11have now we have tim
- 52:11paulson who is a remote
- 52:12coach who I don't know if I
- 52:14need to introduce him to
- 52:15anyone we have joey totoro
- 52:17who has been a coach in
- 52:18this space and an athlete
- 52:19for a very long time as
- 52:20well he was a coach with
- 52:21brute for a long time he
- 52:22was a team athlete is one
- 52:24of my favorite people in the space
- 52:27Joey is awesome.
- 52:30He has been paired up with Colton.
- 52:31I'm telling you,
- 52:32I couldn't have found a
- 52:33better match for two people
- 52:34to be on this ride and this
- 52:36journey together with him
- 52:37being paired with Colton.
- 52:38It's been awesome so far.
- 52:40A lot of the structure and
- 52:44calmness that Colton is
- 52:45getting out of this season
- 52:46now and his ability to just
- 52:47show up and train is because of Joey.
- 52:50Joey gets it.
- 52:53It's been such a good match.
- 52:55Then on top of that, a coach that
- 52:57probably is one of the one
- 53:01of the best coaches in this
- 53:03space that has been around
- 53:03for a long time that I
- 53:04don't think anyone knows
- 53:05about because it's just not
- 53:06in his nature it's dave
- 53:07charbonneau who um prior to
- 53:09being with us was had his
- 53:10own programming company
- 53:11with tim forged by zeus so
- 53:13between the three coaches
- 53:15we have here nick the three
- 53:18remote coaches that we have um the
- 53:21The bench of coaches we have
- 53:23here is about as deep as
- 53:24you could possibly find anywhere,
- 53:26all of our athletes.
- 53:30reap the benefits of that so that not,
- 53:32and this is what I talked about earlier.
- 53:34We're not going to grow this
- 53:35camp any more than we have
- 53:36the ability and the
- 53:37bandwidth to provide for
- 53:38the athletes that we're coaching.
- 53:39We have the coaches to back
- 53:41that up so that when all
- 53:43these coaches go to these
- 53:44different places, um,
- 53:46they're going to have
- 53:47support of a coach on their bag, um,
- 53:50in order to help them
- 53:51through these things.
- 53:51So while I will be, um,
- 53:55collecting some flyer miles
- 53:57again this year um I will
- 53:58not be alone in in any of
- 54:00this by any means um so I i
- 54:03couldn't be luckier to have
- 54:04the coaches that we have to
- 54:04back this whole thing up
- 54:07just one sidebar question
- 54:08for you is sid gonna be in
- 54:09the west again this year
- 54:11she will be yes okay
- 54:13So yeah, you're,
- 54:14you're split up all over the place again.
- 54:16Last year's travel was
- 54:17gnarly cause it went East West Europe.
- 54:20Thanks for that HQ.
- 54:21So I went East, I went Orlando,
- 54:23I went home for two days to see my wife,
- 54:25went West, um,
- 54:27caught the flight from LA
- 54:29straight to Berlin,
- 54:30flew right over Boston
- 54:31cause that would have just
- 54:32been silly to stop there for a night.
- 54:34Um, to do that.
- 54:34I think the flow of it works
- 54:36out better this year.
- 54:36I think it goes to Europe, East West,
- 54:39I think.
- 54:40Um,
- 54:41but regardless it should be
- 54:43a little smoother.
- 54:44But I,
- 54:45I need to make sure I stop home in
- 54:47between these things because I got,
- 54:50my wife's got a baby to do
- 54:51within like the next two weeks.
- 54:52So I'm going to be, I got a lot going on,
- 54:54man.
- 54:56Wow.
- 54:57Yeah.
- 54:57I can't even make,
- 54:58cause I did the first two legs with you.
- 54:59Yeah.
- 55:00It was, it was that third leg.
- 55:02I begged, I bagged out.
- 55:04I saw a few people at all three.
- 55:06I think Kotler was off.
- 55:07I know Kotler wasn't at East.
- 55:08I don't think, but I think Jake Marconi,
- 55:11was my travel buddy with me.
- 55:13I saw him all over the world
- 55:14when we were doing it last year.
- 55:17After he cut his hair,
- 55:19I barely recognize him.
- 55:22It was interesting.
- 55:25I think he said he had his
- 55:25hair that long for so long
- 55:28and he finally cut it.
- 55:29But no, the guy's handsome.
- 55:30He's sharp.
- 55:30He's a fit dude.
- 55:32Oh, yeah.
- 55:32Still a good-looking dude.
- 55:33I just didn't know who he was.
- 55:35Exactly.
- 55:37So this is way off the topic,
- 55:40but I'm going here because
- 55:42I think it's cool,
- 55:43and we only have five minutes left.
- 55:46I was looking at your Instagram,
- 55:48and you are chasing an ultramarathon.
- 55:54Yeah,
- 55:55I'm giving it... I've had two attempts,
- 55:59but yeah, I...
- 56:01I like to,
- 56:01so the thing that attracted me
- 56:03to CrossFit was this thing.
- 56:04It's like,
- 56:04no one else is going to do it
- 56:05because it's so hard.
- 56:06And that was like the thing
- 56:07that attracts a lot of us to it's like,
- 56:08this is harder than
- 56:09anything I've ever done.
- 56:10I want to do it because I
- 56:11know no one else is going to do it.
- 56:13And then one night, a couple of years ago,
- 56:16I went down this rabbit hole
- 56:18of trail running
- 56:19documentaries in 2019 or
- 56:21something like that.
- 56:22I was like, this is gnarly.
- 56:23This is hard.
- 56:25I want to give this a shot.
- 56:27I've had two attempts.
- 56:28The first one,
- 56:29I tweaked my leg at mile 55
- 56:33and had to withdraw.
- 56:35Then I did another one up in
- 56:36Massachusetts where the
- 56:38weather and the fog,
- 56:39I got lost off course and
- 56:41had to pull out from a time
- 56:42cap at mile 35 or 39 or
- 56:43something like that.
- 56:46Yeah,
- 56:46there's another one in Tennessee that
- 56:48I'm eyeing up in October.
- 56:49So maybe I'll get it done there.
- 56:52But, yeah,
- 56:52trying to get one of these
- 56:53100-mile races done.
- 56:54But I absolutely love the solitude of it,
- 56:56the training for it.
- 56:57It's a really,
- 56:58really cool discipline that
- 56:59I've had a lot of fun
- 56:59messing around with.
- 57:02So how does it work?
- 57:04Like you have to get through
- 57:05gates or you're pulled from the course?
- 57:08Yeah,
- 57:09so the most recent one they'll have –
- 57:12like basically you have to
- 57:12get to a certain aid
- 57:13station at a certain time in order to,
- 57:15it's kind of like having a time cap.
- 57:16So each aid station has a time cap.
- 57:19And I think it was like, uh, I don't know.
- 57:21It was like 1230 or 1am and
- 57:24it was this torrential downpour fog.
- 57:26I'm going through the, the,
- 57:27the mountains of Massachusetts,
- 57:29like up a ski slope.
- 57:31And by the time I got down,
- 57:32I think it took me 50
- 57:33minutes to complete one
- 57:34mile cause I just couldn't
- 57:35find the course anymore.
- 57:36And then, Oh, there I am.
- 57:37Yeah, that was dope.
- 57:38The mid state massive.
- 57:39Um,
- 57:41It was a really cool experience.
- 57:43As you can see,
- 57:43the weather was absolutely
- 57:44beautiful for a New England fall day.
- 57:46It was really cool.
- 57:50I've really enjoyed it.
- 57:51Since I moved here,
- 57:52I've been trying to find
- 57:54some training spots to get it done.
- 57:57It's a really, really fun community.
- 58:01It's really, really cool.
- 58:03it's just, it's a lot of fun.
- 58:05I've enjoyed,
- 58:05I can't wait to kind of dive
- 58:06back into it again.
- 58:07And now I know that my time
- 58:08is going to be a lot less
- 58:09with the kid on the way, but I'm going to,
- 58:10I'm going to figure out my wife.
- 58:12She,
- 58:12she keeps telling me I have to finish
- 58:13it as well.
- 58:14So I'm going to have to get
- 58:14one of these things done.
- 58:16Uh, Kenneth says starvation,
- 58:18try question mark.
- 58:20Starvation try.
- 58:20Are you Kenneth?
- 58:21Are you telling me to do a
- 58:22triathlon without eating any food?
- 58:25So I've done it.
- 58:25I've done a, uh, uh,
- 58:27an Ironman before in 2019.
- 58:29That was kind of my first, uh,
- 58:32uh,
- 58:32exploration into a long endurance sports.
- 58:35Um, and that was dope.
- 58:35That was really, really fun.
- 58:36I enjoyed that.
- 58:37And I think that's kind of what like, uh,
- 58:39started scratching the itch
- 58:40for me that found me into these,
- 58:42these trail runs.
- 58:43But, um, now it's been cool.
- 58:44And on the side note of just
- 58:46kind of bring it full circle, um,
- 58:48I love diving into these disciplines.
- 58:50I think there was a time I
- 58:51went like a year and a half
- 58:52where I just Olympic
- 58:53weightlifted and then like
- 58:54dove into that hard.
- 58:55So I learned that discipline a lot better.
- 58:58Endurance sports.
- 58:58I have a really good
- 59:00understanding on running endurance sports,
- 59:01fueling, all of that stuff.
- 59:03So all of these things,
- 59:04I'm basically a human lab
- 59:06to myself so that I can
- 59:07then pull some of these things,
- 59:08these high takeaways for
- 59:09the athletes at the end of the day.
- 59:10So it's fun for me to chase
- 59:12some stuff and then come
- 59:13here and help them as well.
- 59:17Corey says, dude, that sounds terrible.
- 59:20I'll tell you why.
- 59:23It's really exciting at first.
- 59:25you it gets really hard at
- 59:27one point um and then from
- 59:30what I understand since I
- 59:31haven't got there yet once
- 59:32you get to sunrise the next
- 59:34day because you basically
- 59:34start at like 7 or 8 a.m
- 59:36one in the morning one day
- 59:38most of these races have
- 59:39like a 31 to a 34 hour time
- 59:42cap overall so you go the
- 59:44entire day that's pretty
- 59:45cool you get to night time
- 59:47you have to turn your headlamp on um
- 59:50it's equally, um,
- 59:52some demons and like some,
- 59:53like your head goes a bunch
- 59:54of different ways,
- 59:55but it's also equally
- 59:57incredibly peaceful to have
- 59:58the solitude of just this
- 1:00:01one head beam of light is
- 1:00:03the only thing that guides your,
- 1:00:04your path as you go through.
- 1:00:06Um, and then from what I understand,
- 1:00:07I'll let you know,
- 1:00:08hopefully next time when
- 1:00:09you get the sunrise,
- 1:00:10you probably get this gnarly,
- 1:00:12just adrenaline rush of
- 1:00:13finally seeing the sun
- 1:00:14again and getting the warmth of the sun.
- 1:00:16So, um,
- 1:00:17it's pretty cool man and
- 1:00:18plus you get all kinds of
- 1:00:19new gear I got a crossfit
- 1:00:20also because I like buying
- 1:00:21a lot of gear so I got like
- 1:00:22the vest you saw I got
- 1:00:23these gnarly shoes so it's
- 1:00:25it's really fun and if the
- 1:00:27100 is one version of that
- 1:00:29um a 50k is a 32 mile run
- 1:00:31you can that is way more
- 1:00:33approachable I know it
- 1:00:34doesn't sound like but
- 1:00:35trust me on a lot of these
- 1:00:36trails you're not running
- 1:00:36the whole time anyway guys
- 1:00:37as long as you just keep
- 1:00:38moving forward you're going
- 1:00:39to be just fine so corey
- 1:00:40give it a shot man
- 1:00:42Corey's response,
- 1:00:4434-hour time cap sounds like, oh, no,
- 1:00:46thank you.
- 1:00:48I'll tell you what else it does, Corey.
- 1:00:49Your 20-minute AMRAP is
- 1:00:51going to seem like a lot
- 1:00:52less time all of a sudden.
- 1:00:53It changes the perspective
- 1:00:54of what a long workout actually is.
- 1:00:58Corey looks fit, too.
- 1:01:00What's that?
- 1:01:01Corey looked fit.
- 1:01:02I was looking at the picture he has there.
- 1:01:03He looks way fitter than I am.
- 1:01:04So he loves you.
- 1:01:07He had been with CompTrain.
- 1:01:09His affiliate had been with
- 1:01:10CompTrain for a while.
- 1:01:12So he's been following you
- 1:01:13for a long time.
- 1:01:13I actually know Corey pretty well.
- 1:01:15Oh, hell yeah.
- 1:01:17He has a goal to make the
- 1:01:19games when he turns 50.
- 1:01:22Oh, let's go, Corey.
- 1:01:22How old is he now?
- 1:01:2346 or 47.
- 1:01:27Oh, that's dope.
- 1:01:27Yeah.
- 1:01:28So he sounds like, I love that.
- 1:01:29So my,
- 1:01:30my CrossFit ultimate goal real quick here,
- 1:01:33I'm just going to try and
- 1:01:34outlast everybody.
- 1:01:35I know right now there is no
- 1:01:36chance I'm hitting it.
- 1:01:37I've seen some,
- 1:01:38some graphs where like the
- 1:01:39age 40 age group is where
- 1:01:40you get a little bit of a drop off.
- 1:01:42So if I just stay as fit as
- 1:01:44I am with my numbers, when I'm 60,
- 1:01:46I think I'm going to be
- 1:01:47able to slide my way in there.
- 1:01:48But Corey, man,
- 1:01:49go get it you that you look
- 1:01:50fit man and it's very very
- 1:01:52cool um I appreciate you 46
- 1:01:54about before so yeah dude
- 1:01:56man you look fit as hell so
- 1:01:59I'm about to be 40 next
- 1:02:00year so next year I'll be
- 1:02:01in the 48 group so cory
- 1:02:03went to uh masters fitness
- 1:02:05collective this year
- 1:02:05qualified in the rx
- 1:02:08division and I think you'll
- 1:02:09be okay with me at the
- 1:02:11bottom of the
- 1:02:11qualifications in person killed it
- 1:02:16Love it.
- 1:02:16Hell yeah.
- 1:02:17Won an event and finished
- 1:02:20like up near the top in the RX division.
- 1:02:23So now it's just like
- 1:02:25increasingly get better and
- 1:02:28figuring out online comp stuff.
- 1:02:30And it's that.
- 1:02:31Online qualifiers are weird, man.
- 1:02:32It's hard to go to that
- 1:02:32place in an online qualifier.
- 1:02:35Sports are meant to be done in person.
- 1:02:36You're meant to line up next
- 1:02:37to the person that you're
- 1:02:39going through this thing with.
- 1:02:40I dream of a day,
- 1:02:41especially for the elites,
- 1:02:42where online qualifiers are
- 1:02:44a thing of the past.
- 1:02:44I don't think we're anywhere
- 1:02:46near that happening.
- 1:02:46I've got a lot of thoughts on that.
- 1:02:47But get yourself in
- 1:02:50in-person competitions.
- 1:02:51That's where you really get
- 1:02:52a chance to kind of square
- 1:02:55up and do your thing.
- 1:02:56And Corey's like Caroline, I was saying,
- 1:02:57PTP, man, shows up under the lights.
- 1:03:00Exactly.
- 1:03:01That is exactly how he is.
- 1:03:03Um,
- 1:03:04so my last question to this was how
- 1:03:06much has CrossFit helped
- 1:03:07you with these other endeavors,
- 1:03:10like diving into a triathlon, driving it,
- 1:03:13diving into these ultras?
- 1:03:15Yeah, I think a lot.
- 1:03:17Um,
- 1:03:17I think it's helped my ability to stay
- 1:03:18durable during the training.
- 1:03:19So the training of these things is the,
- 1:03:22the hardest part, like
- 1:03:23to be able to show up, put in these, um,
- 1:03:25one to four hour training
- 1:03:27runs to go out and,
- 1:03:28and put in these miles to
- 1:03:30go up and down these mountains.
- 1:03:31Cause a lot of these trail
- 1:03:32runs are all about
- 1:03:32elevation gain and loss as well.
- 1:03:34Um, I think my, just, I've, I've, uh,
- 1:03:40I've never been a great CrossFit athlete,
- 1:03:41but I've been pretty decent.
- 1:03:42And I think that my ability
- 1:03:43and my history of training
- 1:03:45CrossFit has just made me a
- 1:03:46lot more durable to
- 1:03:47withstand the beating that
- 1:03:49you take when you train
- 1:03:50like a runner like that.
- 1:03:51Running, I think,
- 1:03:51is the most injury prone
- 1:03:52sport on the planet.
- 1:03:53And I think a lot of it is
- 1:03:54because everyone's very imbalanced.
- 1:03:56CrossFit has given me the absolute,
- 1:03:58and I think this is what
- 1:03:59the program was originally
- 1:04:01intended to do.
- 1:04:01It gives me the absolute
- 1:04:03best foundation that if you
- 1:04:05give me three months,
- 1:04:08I can pretty much get ready
- 1:04:09for just about any athletic
- 1:04:11endeavor that I would want to do.
- 1:04:13And that is what I love.
- 1:04:15what you're saying is
- 1:04:16crossfit is preventing
- 1:04:17injuries that running
- 1:04:19causes that's such a no
- 1:04:21that's no that's crazy
- 1:04:22don't put that under my
- 1:04:23name I wouldn't stand
- 1:04:24behind that absolutely man
- 1:04:27it's been great um crossfit
- 1:04:29has made me more durable
- 1:04:30better put together to
- 1:04:32withstand the training to
- 1:04:33be able to go and do any
- 1:04:35crazy athletic challenge
- 1:04:37that I want to do from a
- 1:04:37CrossFit competition to a
- 1:04:38weightlifting competition
- 1:04:39to an ultra marathon.
- 1:04:41You give me eight to 12
- 1:04:43weeks and I can pretty much
- 1:04:44get myself in fight and shape to,
- 1:04:45to go have fun and do any
- 1:04:46of those things.
- 1:04:49Well, as always, Jared, man,
- 1:04:50it's a blast hanging out with you.
- 1:04:52Um, again, I,
- 1:04:54I only get through half my
- 1:04:55notes every time.
- 1:04:55Like we talk,
- 1:04:58you go down an Avenue and I
- 1:04:59just go with you.
- 1:05:00I love it, man.
- 1:05:01It's been fun.
- 1:05:02I absolutely love being on here.
- 1:05:03I love being on your show.
- 1:05:05I think just the feel and
- 1:05:07the flow and just how you
- 1:05:12go about what you do is
- 1:05:13very welcoming and
- 1:05:14comforting in the space.
- 1:05:15And I know that you probably
- 1:05:18love this sport as much,
- 1:05:19if not more than anyone
- 1:05:21else in the space.
- 1:05:23And it shows.
- 1:05:24And I appreciate everything you do as well,
- 1:05:25my man.
- 1:05:26Well, thank you so much.
- 1:05:27One quick last comment.
- 1:05:29Highline looks pretty injury prone.
- 1:05:33That man,
- 1:05:34that sport looks gnarly correction.
- 1:05:37I will not be participating in highlight,
- 1:05:39although I was a baseball pitcher,
- 1:05:40so I might be okay.
- 1:05:41There you go.
- 1:05:43All I know it from is the
- 1:05:44opening of Miami Vice.
- 1:05:45That's how old I am.
- 1:05:46Other than that, not a clue.
- 1:05:50But with that, thank you, everybody,
- 1:05:51for being here.
- 1:05:52Thank you for the chat, for joining in.
- 1:05:54Thank you, Jared.
- 1:05:55And good luck this week as
- 1:05:56you have the big open
- 1:05:57announcement tomorrow.
- 1:05:58Yes, sir.
- 1:05:59If you get any hints, send them our way.
- 1:06:02I got you.
- 1:06:03With that,
- 1:06:04we'll catch everybody next time
- 1:06:05on the Clydesdale Media Podcast.
