- 2:39Mayor Monday, Let's bring in Nightro Mayor Dave Casebold, Good morning, sir,
- 2:45Good morning Dave. It's a good senior Nitro. A couple of weeks
- 2:47ago, I had a good time. My buddy Joe asked me if I
- 2:51would come there and help out a little bit with the with the with the
- 2:54Chili Fest that you had there, and and it was it was a great,
- 2:59great time. It really was the chili cook Off. I'm sorry Joe
- 3:01corrected me last week on that because I think chili Fest is like trademarked or
- 3:06something, So it was whatever you call it. We had a lot of
- 3:07fun and we had we raised money for some great causes, and you guys
- 3:12did it right there. Absolutely, it is a great event. It does
- 3:15raise money for a lot of the hospice and a lot of a lot of
- 3:19the good people in town, for the Humane Society in those groups. So
- 3:23it is a good, good fundraiser. And indeed it was was a great
- 3:27day there in Nightro. And also I wanted to throw this out there and
- 3:30then we'll get into some business in the city mayor uh And listeners have heard
- 3:34me say this before. No one celebrates their veterans more than the city of
- 3:40Nitro, as far as I'm concerned, not one, but two celebrations,
- 3:44one Friday and the other on Saturday. How did everything go? It went
- 3:46fantastic. And you're right, Meyer Bog said that on her speech. We
- 3:51don't want to celebrate veterans just on Memorial Day or veterans day. We celebrate
- 3:55them year round. We have our Living Memorial Park with our bricks, we
- 3:59have flag display up front, we have our dough Boy statue. We put
- 4:03about twenty five foot dough Boy statue up on the interstate here hopefully in the
- 4:08next few months. And we have a lot of events to run for the
- 4:13wall that we were just chosen as the city to receive the Vietnam Memorial Wall.
- 4:16So yeah, we really celebrate our veterans for sure. Year wrong.
- 4:21Yeah, yeah, you're exactly right. And I didn't get to a ten,
- 4:25but I understand that you also had a visit. I think it was
- 4:27on the Friday Service from an Ariad World War II veteran. Is that right?
- 4:30He was honored Bob Denny. Yes, sir, he's quite a quick
- 4:34character. He's a fantastic man. He served in the Navy in the Pacific
- 4:40Theater in nineteen forty five and he actually said a few words and he was
- 4:45just fantastic to have. And as I mentioned this on the show Friday Mayor,
- 4:48back when I was a kid growing up the nineteen seventies, there were
- 4:50World War Two veterans, including my grandfather, everywhere and because of you know,
- 4:56the march of time. We don't have as many of the Greatest Generation
- 4:59as we use to. That generation raised us. You're right, Dave.
- 5:02I mean I look back at my childhood, just about every father was a
- 5:06World War Two veteran. It was remarkable. Mayor. I was told that
- 5:13you wanted to talk about. So we got a couple of things I want
- 5:15to get to. One of those is this something called a hometown resolution.
- 5:18You can't explain what that is. Sure. City of Nicho was the first
- 5:21city in America to pass a resolution call for a permanent, once a year
- 5:27celebration of hometowns. This is an effort being put on by Dan McGinn and
- 5:31Ken Burns and many celebrities to create a national Honor your Hometown weekend. So
- 5:36Nicho had the honor to be the first city to pass that resolution. And
- 5:41since doing that, several states have passed resolution. Many cities have, including
- 5:46the state of West Virginia. So there's now a campaign out to have an
- 5:50Honor your Hometown weekend. Hometowns are very important, exactly, and of course
- 5:55ken Burns, I mean that name. People are gone with that that Ki,
- 5:58Yeah, it's that Ken Burns. The Civil War a baseball documentary,
- 6:00and that's who we're talking about here. That's correct. He is doing a
- 6:03hometown documentary now that they expect to have out, I believe in twenty five
- 6:10or twenty six, and Natrol be a part of that documentary. That's and
- 6:14that's awesome. I mean, it really really is, because you know,
- 6:15I think sometimes and everybody comes from somewhere, but I think sometimes that on
- 6:20the national level, we focus on New York, Los Angeles, Chicago and
- 6:24these places, but there's a whole lot more nitros and small towns in Texas
- 6:29and Montana and places like that than there are those metropolitan cities. Boy,
- 6:33Dave, you're hitting the nail on the head. That's what this campaign's all
- 6:35about. When you think about your hometowns. I mean, that's where you
- 6:39developed your friendship, where you went to school, where you developed your self
- 6:44concept and how you see the world. It's where you have a lot of
- 6:47memories, yeah, a lot of memories. It's where you have a place
- 6:50of belonging and connection. So hometowns are very important. And I'll tell you
- 6:57something else to day is something to meet you and I talked about a couple
- 7:00of weeks ago. It octually something to Joe Manchin mentioned his talk on Thursday,
- 7:04and that is we are not as divided as we think we are.
- 7:09Nothing reflects that more than your hometown. Yeah, yeah, yeah, you're
- 7:14exactly And you and I did have that conversation along with and I'll go ahead
- 7:17and I'll just throw it out there. At the event in Nitro a couple
- 7:21of weeks ago, we had a and I don't know what your political party
- 7:25is, Mayrior, It's not important to me, but we had a conversation
- 7:29myself. We had a Republican in the conversation, and we had a Democrat
- 7:32in the conversation. And then you and I were there and we had about
- 7:36a thirty minute conversation on the street there in Nitro about politics, and nobody
- 7:42got upset, nobody yelled, nobody screamed. We just kind of course.
- 7:45Maybe the chili was a great equalizer. I don't know, but it was
- 7:48a great conversation and you're exactly right. Well, if you think about this,
- 7:51just take this weekend for example. You had all these state playoff games
- 7:56care across the care across the state, and what you saw was communities coming
- 8:00together for one common cause, and that was the cheer of their football teams
- 8:03on and nothing else mattered. I mean, we work together to see our
- 8:07schools and children do well. We support our local businesses, we support our
- 8:11local churches, volunteers out every day working to make the community better. Here's
- 8:18the key to it all, hometown city governments. In my opinion, hometown
- 8:24city governments reflect the pure essence of democracy. Decisions are made based on what
- 8:30is best for the community. I'm telling you I work with city council members
- 8:33right now that I've worked with for many years that I cannot tell you if
- 8:37they are Republican or Democrats, because it does not matter. We are there
- 8:43to make decisions based on what's best for our community, and we're hell accountable
- 8:48for that. I think that's why it reflects more in hometowns than it does
- 8:52at higher levels, because people we are either seeing things getting done earther or
- 8:56not, and when this time to vote, that's what they're going to vote.
- 9:00Hold on, yep, exactly right again, we're talking with Mayor Dave
- 9:03case Fold of Nitro here on mayor Monday. Now, you guys have had
- 9:07some some demolition style projects going on there, abandoned houses and things of that
- 9:11nature. There's been a lot of that going on to the last couple of
- 9:13years. Talk about that a little bit. You know what, I think
- 9:16Nitro is the poster child for the benefits of this deep reprogram. We are
- 9:22seeing tremendous benefit for this and in the past couple of years we received three
- 9:28hundred and fifty thousand dollars from that brief program. We have removed several dilapidated
- 9:31commercial structures and residential structures. We have a new Taco Bell. We removed
- 9:39some old structures that were dysfunctional that we're never probably ever going to house business
- 9:46again. We've removed those structures. We're now in contract on a big lot
- 9:48between the Taco Bell and the Nitro Supermarket with an investor. We have a
- 9:54lot of interest on some property down on thirty ninth Street. So we're just
- 9:58a perfect example of how this pro of them works. But I'll tell you
- 10:01this too. The state passed the law I don't know where's last year or
- 10:07year four last that allowed cities to have first shots on some of these tax
- 10:11sell properties and the City of Nitro was able to buy up some of those
- 10:16properties use this rep money to get these homes tore down and in just the
- 10:20past month we sold four of those properties and right now there's four new homes
- 10:26being built on those lots. And it's in the area of town where if
- 10:30you'd told me ten years ago we'd be seeing this type of investment, I
- 10:33would have never believed it. Not only are those new homes being built,
- 10:37but investors are swooping in, They're buying up a lot the other properties around
- 10:41that whole area of town is being is changing for the better, and it's
- 10:48a direct reflection on this rep program. And to our staff, I tell
- 10:52you, I got tremendous down on the Great lra board. Yeah, you
- 10:56got to throw those folks in there as well. It's great, and you're
- 10:58exactly right, it's a great I'm going to talk about Riding now Our Lake
- 11:01a little bit. Well, the more popular destinations around Nitro. There's been
- 11:05some talk about some expansions going on out there. Yeah, so, I
- 11:09think the last time I was on your show, I mentioned that we bought
- 11:11two hundred and fifty acres adjacent to Riding Our Lake and part of the goal
- 11:16of that property was to develop some hiking and biking trails. We were able
- 11:20to secure a land and water conservation grant and last week at work started.
- 11:24Now the contractor told me he will be a year maybe longer putting these trails
- 11:30in, but when he's finished, we will have fourteen miles of hiking and
- 11:33biking trails plus some horse trails, so it'll be a great recreation area for
- 11:39the citizens of Nitro. Speaking of which, Mayor, I got a text
- 11:41here for you that says Dave. Other big news from last Thursday, the
- 11:45City of Nitro stock riding now Our Lake with the first batch of trout for
- 11:48the season, best fishing in the area. Big things to the Mayor of
- 11:52Nitro and their city council. Yeah, trout fishing is very popular out there
- 11:56at riding Our Lake and we stock it monthly. Council Bill Javis, that's
- 12:00his uh, that's that's one of the things he really concentrates on. And
- 12:03we have uh we stock it with calffish during the summer and last uh last
- 12:09week the water temperatures were low enough to start stocking with trout. So we
- 12:11will stock it every month and the dn R will stock it a couple of
- 12:16times, so it's a great place for trout fishing, all right. One
- 12:18final thing here. I want to talk about storm water. It's always exciting,
- 12:22he said, tongue in cheek. But without in all seriouss mayor without
- 12:26proper storm water, storm storm drainings, infrastructure, major issues could pop up.
- 12:31What are you all doing on that front? Well, I'll tell you
- 12:33there's no doubt that stormwater run off is our biggest challenge. My wife would
- 12:37be to first tell you that when it starts to rain, my stress levels
- 12:41go at rains anymore are are as as most people know, It's just it
- 12:46just it doesn't rain. You don't have summer range. It's it drops two
- 12:50to four inches at a time. So we have a lot of areas that
- 12:52we are working on. We did. We were lucky to get Shelleymore.
- 12:58Capitol's Office was able to get us a grand for two point nine million,
- 13:01and State of West Virginia pitched in another seven hundred thousand dollars. So we
- 13:05are waiting for permits to put in our Walker Street drain. I keep saying
- 13:11that, but I keep thinking the permits will come in any day. Once
- 13:15they do, we will put that project out for bid. That's about a
- 13:18four million dollar project and it'll alleviate a lot of floating on the east end
- 13:22of town. But it's no doubt our biggest issue storm water. Well,
- 13:28Mayor, I know you got a lot of exciting things as we head into
- 13:31the Christmas season as well, and I'll have you on again or somebody from
- 13:35the city and to talk about that. Always pleasure talking to my friends in
- 13:37Nitro. Mayor, Dave Case what we'll talk again, Sue Man, thanks

- 17:06County Clerk and candidate for West Virginia Secretary of State Brian Wood. Good morning,
- 17:10sir, Good morning, my friend. How are you. I'm doing
- 17:12fine? Was a weekend. Good to you, Yes, sir, I
- 17:15had a great time, great time. But it went down there to the
- 17:18seventy five game, uh for for Marshall pulled out a win finally, So
- 17:25we needed about that. We needed that and I'm glad it was on that
- 17:27night. Yeah, you know, look pretty cool and it was. It
- 17:30was a good, good, good game. So I know you've been out
- 17:33on the road a whole lot. I see your pictures on social media.
- 17:37You've been all over the state of West Virginia, which is required when you're
- 17:38running for state wide office. How's the campaign going so far? Yes,
- 17:42sir, Yes, sir. I think we had a great, great foundation
- 17:47to start our campaign with, always looking for volunteers and help, you know,
- 17:52uh, contributors. In any way, it's this, this election for
- 17:57the Secretary of State's office. I think it's going to be different than any
- 18:00other election, not only in the history, but also that this year as
- 18:06far as grassroots is going to make a huge difference in it. The candidates,
- 18:11all the candidates are relatively new candidates, so the people will have their
- 18:15voice, will be heard and can make a difference in this election more than
- 18:21any other election. Well, and one thing about it is. You know,
- 18:22the current West Virginia Secretary of State, Mac Warner is running for governor.
- 18:26He's not seeking reelection to secretary of State. So regardless of who the
- 18:30voters choose, we're going to have a new secretary of State, as well
- 18:33as the other constitutional office holders as well, everybody but the agg commissioner,
- 18:37who I think mister Leonhard is staying put. So after so many years Brian
- 18:42as a county clerk there in Putnham County, and how long have you served
- 18:45as county clerk, I'm going in my twentieth year, twentieth years county clerk
- 18:51of Puttenham County. After all that time there, why do you suddenly now
- 18:55want to be secretary of State? Well, if you had asked me a
- 18:59year ago, if I was run for secretary of State, I told you
- 19:00you were crazy. Uh. But you know, looking at it, for
- 19:04far too long, secretary of State's office has been used as stepping stone for
- 19:08higher offices. And I just I want to see somebody that wants that job
- 19:14for that position. Uh. When I'm out and about and talking to the
- 19:18folks, I hear a couple of things there. One you know, they're
- 19:21they want they want like term limits. They don't want the same old,
- 19:23same old. They don't want generational campaigning, different things like that. Uh.
- 19:30I'm I'm the only candidate in the race that that you know, that
- 19:33that will commit probably to to the fact that I'm not going to seek governor.
- 19:37I'm not going to seek Congress. I want to be the Secretary of
- 19:41State. To be Secretary of State, and also, you know, aside
- 19:45from the politics of it, I want somebody in there that knows the position,
- 19:48that's worked with that office hand in hand, that that uh. You
- 19:52know, I was president of the County Clerks Association, so we I led
- 19:59the clerks to through the through the COVID crisis, through the through the redistrict
- 20:03team, and things like that. We can't I'm constantly working with the Secretary
- 20:07of State on making you know, Western elections better. When Mike talks about
- 20:11the four hundred thousand uhsture voters taking off, those are those are voters that
- 20:18the county clerks and their their staff have worked digitally and hard to uh to
- 20:23remove those those from the voter rolls. Mike has done a great job in
- 20:30helping us identify those voters that need to be removed, But you know,
- 20:33it all comes down to the county clerks, in their in their staff when
- 20:36it comes to uh that aspect. Talking again with Puttenham County Clerk and Canada
- 20:41Secretary of State Brian Wood Bryant. Since the last time you were on the
- 20:44show, Doug scaff former State Senator, former House member, most recently House
- 20:48Minority Leader and president of HD Media, the parent company of several media outlets,
- 20:52including the eazet Mail here locally, has switched parties and entered the Fray
- 20:56to run for Secretary of States. Any thoughts from you on that, Well,
- 21:00you know, I'll leave it to the voters as to why he switch
- 21:03parties. I think it's pretty obvious that that, you know, it looks
- 21:07as if there's going to be a red wave. Obviously that's up to the
- 21:11voters, but it's gonna looks to be the way of red wave, and
- 21:14in my mind, he feels that, you know, it's better to be
- 21:18a Republican in this election than a Democrat. The one thing about is that
- 21:22Brian Wood has always been a Republican, been Republican from day one. Uh
- 21:26So there's no question about where, you know where when it comes to politics
- 21:30where my loyalty lives when it comes to the office. Yeah, the office
- 21:33that you got to do your job basically in the law. And and it
- 21:37doesn't matter who who you're serving, whether it be a Democrat, Republican or
- 21:41independent, you got to do the right thing. And uh So, you
- 21:47know, I'll leave it to the voters as to why he switched this party.
- 21:51I don't think that it was something that just you know, I uh,
- 21:56it seems too close and too soon to the election that to be a
- 22:00true change of heart. And you know, and and what that said,
- 22:03I've got a lot of friends that have changed parties and and and you know,
- 22:06and and and truly the party has left them. Uh, you know,
- 22:11on a on a national level, the party has left them. But
- 22:14you know, they're not running for office, and it's not right before.
- 22:18It's not the Republican nomination. Talking again with Putnam County Clerk and Cannaifer Secretary
- 22:25State Brian would there was a recent poll out and there's been some questions about
- 22:29this pole legitimacy and so on and so forth. It says if Brian a
- 22:33former state Republican party chair, uh, and he's had a bunch of offices,
- 22:36offices and state government since then, non elected type governmental jobs. Chris
- 22:40Warner brother Mike Warner. There have been some polling out there that says if
- 22:44Chris Warner were to enter the race for secretary Secretary of State, he could
- 22:47be the favorite. Your thoughts on that, well, you know, obviously
- 22:52it's a it's a little late to get into the into the game here in
- 22:56my mind. You know, I've been out doing going from county to county
- 23:03and doing the parades and doing the you know, the the events in the
- 23:07ball games and different things like that, and so, uh, you know,
- 23:11he has the right to run. He needs to enter the race center
- 23:15than later, I would think, if he wants to do it. Uh,
- 23:18as far as the poll goes, you know, the only poll that
- 23:19matters is the one on election day. That's that's the one where the boats
- 23:23come in. I've seen Poles totally get it wrong. You know, this
- 23:27is probably the same poll that his brother's complaining about him being so far behind
- 23:32on too, So you know, uh, and that not being accurate.
- 23:36So I don't want to give any validity to that Pole. You know,
- 23:41Poles probably should be whoever's filed for office, not necessarily who may file for
- 23:45office or different things like that. I believe they had that Daniel Limville at
- 23:48one time. Him there there, They've had everybody, uh, you know
- 23:52that they could possibly think of. So they probably need to dial it down
- 23:56and figure out, Okay, who's truly has file the pre candidacy, who's
- 24:00out there asking for people's votes, and who knows the position. Well,
- 24:06yeah, now we talked about Doug scaff who's into the race. We also
- 24:11know that the Ken Reid who's in the legislature at one time, and Delegate
- 24:15Chris Prett who serves here locally, they have both entered the race. They
- 24:19are on file. Well, they will be in January. I should say
- 24:23for the secretary of State, why is Brian Wood the best pick? Well,
- 24:29you know, I don't think you'll find anybody in the race that has
- 24:33a twenty years experience managed in the public office managing elections. I'll be the
- 24:40first Secretary of State that actually knows how to run the equipment and test the
- 24:42equipment if elected. So you know, I don't want to use as deputton.
- 24:49I want the position to be the Secretary of State. Once I'm done
- 24:55with Secretary of State, I'll move on to something else, but it won't
- 24:57be in a higher position. And when it comes to the others, you
- 25:03know, I'm the one that's constantly being a Republican. You know, all
- 25:07the others have changed their parties from nevercrat to Republican or Independent and so forth.
- 25:11So I'm the only one that is consistent there. I'm the only one
- 25:17that doesn't come from Charleston, isn't related to Tarston. You know, I'm
- 25:19just the outsider. You know, I put my pants on just like everyone
- 25:23else. I let paycheck to paycheck. I try to raise my family,
- 25:27be a good person in the community. And when looking at this this job,
- 25:32you know, I know I'm I'm qualified for it. I know I
- 25:34can do a good job for him the people of West Virginia. I just
- 25:38wanted to give him the opportunity to vote for somebody other than the normal.
- 25:41What do you see as the biggest need of the Secretary of State's office,
- 25:45because you've probably got a little bit more insight, Well, actually you do.
- 25:48Based on the fact that you've been a county clerk for so long a
- 25:52Putnham County. You in the past have complimented the work of the current Secretary
- 25:56of State Mac Water. But what do you see as maybe the biggest needs
- 26:00or maybe something that's on your radar but not necessarily that they're doing wrong right
- 26:03now, But you say, well, I'd like to see us maybe work
- 26:07on this a little bit if I'm elected secretary of state. Anything you're taking
- 26:10a look at. Yeah, when you're in office and you're running for a
- 26:14different office, or you're trying to you know, move move on up the
- 26:18ladder. Uh. And I'm talking about other people here. You know,
- 26:22you're always constantly trying to think of new programs and new things like that.
- 26:26And some of those programs are good, and some of those programs are just
- 26:29for show for politics, and you know some of the good programs that that
- 26:36Mike has put on. Uh, there's places we need to adopt the eyes
- 26:40and cross the t's. They're The statewide voter registration system needs hired up.
- 26:45You know, we went from a version two point zero to like version nine
- 26:49or uh I believe it is eleven and UH, and that transition between the
- 26:56two is not where it needs to be. Uh. There to be some
- 27:00concentration on that to help the clerks do their job and make sure that these
- 27:03voter rolls are seeing and secure. When it comes to artificial intelligence and things
- 27:11like that, you know, we need to make sure that we don't lose
- 27:12the person the person contact. If somebody wants to call you to speak to
- 27:17a person rather than than than you know, artificial intelligence, we need to
- 27:22be there for them and keep up with that. When it close to the
- 27:26business side of things, and you know, most of the candidates are probably
- 27:30going to concentrate on the business side of things or other the elections side of
- 27:33things because they don't they can't hang with me when it comes to knowing the
- 27:37election stuff. The business side of things is you know, probably seventy five
- 27:44percent of the job twenty five percent elections. But that seventy five percent really
- 27:48is a management position. You know, you need your manage in the office
- 27:52you're managing and employees, and you know, it basically comes down to having
- 27:57a good team and working with that team and listening to your your the citizens,
- 28:03listen to the business owners as to what those needs are and what those
- 28:07you know, what changes need to be made, and then and then uh
- 28:11adjusting to it. Uh. The other thing I can think of is the
- 28:17website. You know, the website has a lot of information and a lot
- 28:19of good information, but sometimes it's hard to drill down to where you need
- 28:25to find it at and so, and I know that's kind of a Hodgepodge's
- 28:29Office of Technology and the Secretary of States office, you know, they we'll
- 28:34need a besiage it and figure out a way of working with that other office
- 28:38too, to make it better for the people, make it better for the
- 28:41citizens. Brian, Where can people learn more about you, your campaign and
- 28:45whatnot? Would the number four WV dot com would for w V dot com
- 28:52And it's also book as well. All right, well, I know you've
- 28:55been out. Like I said, I've seen your pictures on social media.
- 28:56Man, you're everywhere. You've got to sleep sometimes. So when you when
- 29:02you all have a whole lot of money to work with, and you know,
- 29:03and like I said, I'm a average person. You you only the
- 29:07only choice you got is to get out there and get it and meet the
- 29:10people and be around the people. And and to be honest with you,
- 29:12I'd rather have it that way. When I'm around the people, it's encouraging
- 29:18because they like my story. They like that I'm you know, one of
- 29:21them. They like the fact that I don't put myself on a pedestal,
- 29:26that I'm not somebody from the trost and uh circle, so to speak,
- 29:30and and and it gives me a breath of fresh air, I knowing that
- 29:34people appreciate that and appreciate that, the opportunity to vote for not the norm.
- 29:40All right, Brian, wish you the best of luck. We'll talk
- 29:41again, soue man. Thanks a lot, Thank you, appreciate you.

- 33:02families that need this holiday season. The Big Lee Pigley Wiggly Turkey Drive this
- 33:07Thursday, six am until six pm at our studio is eleven eleven Virginia's Treat
- 33:10East Here in Charleston, presented by WVRC Media. We are proud to live
- 33:15here too. Somebody's also very proud to be from this series. Rich Lindsay,
- 33:20how are you, ma'am? Hey, good morning? How you doing
- 33:22today? Well? Do you know about dropping turkeys? Man? I know
- 33:24how to put them in the oven and cook them. I don't know about
- 33:27dropping you know how to put them away? Yes? Do you cook dinner
- 33:29in your house? Are you a cook? Oh? Yeah? I think
- 33:30we talked about this before You're you're you're a pretty good cook, right.
- 33:36I learned early on that I like to eat, and if you like to
- 33:37eat, you gotta learn how to cook. I need to work on that.
- 33:40I definitely need to work on that. All right. So you are
- 33:44a candidate for judge here in KANAWHK County. I want to go ahead,
- 33:46and that's not what you're here to talk about, but I did want to
- 33:50go ahead and mention your Canada's Canada Ship. God go ahead, candidacy,
- 33:54go ahead, No, no, no. I'm running for the eighth division
- 33:58seat here in Kanawh County, which is the new seat that the legislature created
- 34:00last session. And so the campaign is well on its way. We're going
- 34:05to reach our goals of two thousand homes or houses knocked before the end of
- 34:08the year and meet our fundraising goals and looking forward to next year and when
- 34:13you're out and I've interviewed a couple of different and there's all these different seats
- 34:16of kind of confusing, But I've interviewed a few candidates for judge. Got
- 34:20as matter of fact, one coming up on the show tomorrow. When you're
- 34:23campaigning for judge and these judicial positions, the campaign itself, the playbook can
- 34:29be a little bit different, yes, because there are certain rules judicial candidates
- 34:34must follow. Judicial candidates can't talk a lot about political parties or political issues
- 34:40all because at some point in time, if that candidate is lucky enough to
- 34:44be a judge, he or she may have to confront those issues as judge.
- 34:47And so the rules are pretty pretty harsh when it comes to that.
- 34:52So what I do is I just tell people about who I am, what
- 34:54I've done, what's important to me, my experience as a lawyer. I've
- 34:59got fifteen year experience and trying cases here in Kennall County, Caboy and in
- 35:04Raleigh County. So that's what I share with them. And then of course
- 35:06I asked them what's important to them, what do they like to see in
- 35:08a judicial candidate. Most people don't have an answer for that. But the
- 35:12one thing that I've heard is, of course, what you would expect to
- 35:15hear when it comes to crime and issues like that. People are concerned about
- 35:19their security of themselves and their things and their homes, and so we have
- 35:22good conversations in that regard. Now, for those have you been on the
- 35:24show several times for the last three and a half years, I've been doing
- 35:28the show. But for those who may not be familiar with your story,
- 35:30your background, give me a little bio on rich Lindsay, sure, the
- 35:34little bio, the shortened bio is that, ohtheres than in the fact that
- 35:37you're a good cook. Well, yes, I was born here in Charleston,
- 35:39West Virginia, and I've lived most of my life here. I live
- 35:43on the East End with my wife and lived there for twelve to fifteen years.
- 35:46I say twelve to fifteen because I for a short period of time we
- 35:50were somewhere else in the area. But in any case, and I've been
- 35:53practicing law for fifteen years before that, I've done just about everything you can
- 35:59do as far as working here in the area, we talked about food.
- 36:02One of the reasons why I think I like food is I used to be
- 36:05a waiter over at Todd Water in the heart of Charleston when the Holiday Inn,
- 36:08when they had the restaurant there. I've worked at the Big Lee Piggy
- 36:15Wiggily formerly known as food Land when I was much much younger in high school,
- 36:19and recently did a stint working for ups and unloading trucks. So that's
- 36:24a little bit about me as far as my work history. But other than
- 36:29that, I love sports, love my kids, try to, you know,
- 36:32do as much with them as possible. Right now is basketball season in
- 36:35Kanawh County and so my youngest is in the Kanawh County Basketball League. So
- 36:40we started our first two games this weekend. I think that'll run all the
- 36:44way util February. And my oldest son played football worse Man and so we
- 36:49were there at every game. They've got a wonderful program. Coach Lee.
- 36:52I've got to give a shout out to him, Coach Washington and coach Brown
- 36:55for the way they coach those boys up this year. So that's who you
- 36:59are. That's a little bit of it. But now, why are you
- 37:01here today? You wanted to you actually reach out to me to talk about
- 37:04something else. And by the way, I'm getting text about this situation on
- 37:07the West Side. I'm going to get into that a little bit later.
- 37:08On the gas in the water. I didn't I had to take care of
- 37:12some guests today, but I do have some information on that I'm going to
- 37:14get out to the people. But why are you here today? I'm here
- 37:16talking about a nonprofit called West Virginia's Helping. It's a group or nonprofit that
- 37:21both my parents, Pam Lindsay and Richard Lindsay, formed way back in two
- 37:25thousand and The goal of the group, or the goal of nonprofit is to
- 37:30get kids who are in need of shoes and school supplies and personal hygiene products
- 37:36get those products and things to them every year. And so they've done and
- 37:39not we've done. What we've done is instead of working through the parents,
- 37:45we work through the teachers of certain schools here in the area. They identify
- 37:50students in need of new shoes because we're getting up on the cold months of
- 37:52the year. And for the last twenty three years that those teachers have identified
- 37:57those kids helped us figure out the side of shoes, and then my office
- 38:01manager at Taber Lindsay associates Christy Wegman, who does this out of volunteership to
- 38:07the group, then purchases shoes and brings everything together for each of these kids
- 38:13every year between Thanksgiving and Christmas, and each kid who so identified gets a
- 38:17new pair of shoes, socks, school supplies, like I said, toothbrushes,
- 38:21toothpaste, deodorant, maybe a little toy. And the schools handle this
- 38:29pretty discreetly by giving the this stuff to the kids after school and again between
- 38:35the holidays. So I can't be more proud of what my parents have done
- 38:37in this regard and what Christy Wegman has done. And so I'm here today
- 38:44to talk about the program because as the years have gone by, one hundred
- 38:46percent of all money received goes to these kids. There are no administrative costs.
- 38:52Everything that we have from the website to the phone line to Christi Wegman,
- 38:55who does it for free, is done for free. And so but
- 39:00at the same time, we've had difficulty fundraising over the years, and we're
- 39:04getting to a point now where we may lose the school. And I don't
- 39:07want that to happen. And so that's what I'm here to talk about today,
- 39:10all right, And where what is the website? It's West Virginia Help.
- 39:14It's WV Helping h E L P I n G dot org and the
- 39:20phone number is three zero four three four four four seven three nine. And
- 39:25I can tell you the schools that we're in Okay, Okay, Andrew Jackson
- 39:30Middle School, Nitral High School, Nitral Elementary, Piedmont Mary c snow Bridgeview,
- 39:37Lakeside, and Rock Branch. And just so folks know again, in
- 39:42the twenty three years that my parents have done this with Christy, over seven
- 39:45thousand kids have received new shoes. So it's it's been around for a long
- 39:51time, not a lot of notoriety. We kind of do things behind the
- 39:53scenes and we've been able to reach our goal. But we're having a little
- 39:57trouble this year. If someone out there would like to sponsor a kid for
- 40:00a new pair of shoes, that's thirty dollars and so please go to the
- 40:04website again, WV Helping dot org and the phone number is three zero four
- 40:08three four four four seven three nine. And I know that we have a
- 40:12lot of people rich that listen to this show that may be involved in civic
- 40:15organizations you know, your rotary Kawanas, Lions Club, that sort of thing.
- 40:20We have a lot of people listening to the show that are very active
- 40:22in their church groups and things of that nature. If this is something I
- 40:25mean, you need bodies out there to kind of help with this. This
- 40:30would be an ideal service project for one of those service groups that I mentioned.
- 40:32This would be an ideal project for a church kids. As you well
- 40:37know, you're a parent, and kids in school have to do community service
- 40:40projects in order to graduate. Sure you would welcome their help as well.
- 40:45Absolutely the help, and you're right about that. As far as the involvement
- 40:49of churches and groups in the area, and it reminds me I've got a
- 40:52shout out to Chrissy Wegman's Church of Saint Paul's United Methodist and Nitro have they
- 41:00have been the heart and soul of this program as well, because they have
- 41:01provided volunteers and help stuff boxes, shoe boxes for kids and raising money and
- 41:07getting everything together. So yes, all support would be helpful. And and
- 41:14of course we're kind of getting into the holiday season, but this is really
- 41:16a year round type thing. This is not necessarily a Christmas project, per
- 41:21se. I mean you you guys will except help you around for this project.
- 41:23Yes, absolutely, We raise money all year, yes exactly for this
- 41:27big event. Right again, Every year a little over three hundred students get
- 41:31get help in this regard. And and the reason why, just so folks
- 41:37know, I mean the reason why we pick shoes and new shoes, not
- 41:38old shoes. New shoes for two reasons. One, kids always they always
- 41:44like to wear nice kicks, right, I mean good kicks. But the
- 41:46more important reason is that's something that you can see. A student may not
- 41:51have his or her family, may not have the resources to get new shoes,
- 41:54may have beat up shoes. And it's going to get wet and cold
- 41:59and snow here in the next couple of months, and so everyone should have
- 42:01fresh shoes on their feet to keep their feet warm, especially our students.
- 42:06All right, rich now again, give us the website again and working people
- 42:08help out it. They'd like to help because it's a very very one wild
- 42:10project. Yes, sir, it's w v helping dot org. That's w
- 42:14V H E L P I n G dot org. And the phone number
- 42:19is three zero four three four four four seven three nine. All right,
- 42:23Rich, as always, it's a pleasure to have you on the show man.
- 42:27We'll talk against so it's always good to see. I will say I
- 42:29was waiting in the room there to get on, and it's the first time
- 42:31I ever met Fred Persinger. Oh really. Oh, and you know his
- 42:35voice sounds just as good and real person as it does, you know when
- 42:38you when I hear on the radio, that's what they say about me.
- 42:40Well, I was gonna say he's got the voice for radio, you and
- 42:44I have the faces for because I've never heard that joke. I had to
- 42:47do it. Fred is an institution, and Fred is in West Virginia.
- 42:52He's the best there is. And Fred and I will tell you quick Fred
- 42:54Persinger story. Like a week or so ago, he and I were having
- 42:58a conversation about something within the company, and he said he was talking to
- 43:01some of the higher ups in the company, like in Morgantown, and he
- 43:04said he needed to talk to and one said, you're not retiring, are
- 43:07you, And he said, no, I'm not retiring. I'm not retiring
- 43:09anytime said you want to talk to him about something else? But I got

- 46:12right, So I had a text to the show here at a few matter
- 46:13of facts that hey, dave any idea what's going on on the West Side
- 46:15with the water and gas shut off? People are cold without heat to have
- 46:19natural gas in their water and the water and their furnaces. It's a mess
- 46:22over there. And I don't pretend to have any specialized knowledge here. I
- 46:28will say that it all started, I guess on Friday night. For what
- 46:32I've been able to ascertain, around seven hundred customers of Mountain Air Gas on
- 46:37the West Side where without service now the Red Cross was forced to open up
- 46:42a warming shelter as the temperatures. As you know, we're having pretty nice
- 46:45weather in the daytime, but as I left my house this morning, it
- 46:47was like thirty one degrees. So it's obviously not so much during the overnight
- 46:52hours. So the Red Cross opened up a warming shelter and that is that
- 46:55to Bream Memorial Presbyterian Church, and a lot of these residents are without water
- 47:01as well. And again I'm not an engineer. Maybe I should get an
- 47:05engineer on the show to better explain it. But apparently some of the services.
- 47:10The water I think was restored around ten o'clock on Saturday morning, so
- 47:15from what I'm understanding, and again Jeff and Carry and the news team Chris
- 47:19have been working on this. We'll have more throughout the day. So basically,
- 47:22the water main issue caused the gas problem. They had to cancel classes
- 47:27today at Mary C. Snow Elementary School and so they're still trying to get
- 47:30things back normal. But as far as a further update at this time,
- 47:35I do not have it. We will be working on that, as I
- 47:37can tell you though throughout the day. It is kind of a mess there
- 47:40on the West Side and new citizens are outraged. I've got text from things
- 47:45here. I had all kinds of stuff I heard from actually a couple of
- 47:50elected officials and there the legislatures in session right now. They have internets going
- 47:54on and Wheeling in one particular reached out to me and said, I want
- 47:57to come on and talk about this. So I said, okay, Well
- 48:00we get John a little bit later on the show. But again we'll have
- 48:01more information as it becomes available to us. Keep it, keep it here.

- 48:16de tales. Okay. On the Senator Mansion, news broke Thursday afternoon to
- 48:21really no one surprise that Senator Joe Manchin would not be running for reelection to
- 48:25US Senates virtually in my eyes and the eyes of a lot of other politicos,
- 48:31basically giving the office the Jim Justice. Now that may seem like an
- 48:37exaggeration, but Governor Justice is going to be Alex Mooney unless something major changes.
- 48:44With all due respect to Congressman Mooney, Justice is going to win that
- 48:49race as it stands right now, and not only against Alex Mooney, but
- 48:52against anyone the Democrats are going to put up with all due respect to party
- 48:58chair and a frequent guest on the show, Mike Pushkin. What I think
- 49:04is really interesting is reading the commentaries and opinions outside of West Virginia about Senator
- 49:12Manchin, those without a knowledge of West Virginia politics saying things like, well,
- 49:17finally they can get rid of Manchon, who many of these folks think
- 49:24is just a Republican and hiding. And again I'm talking about the comments I
- 49:29was reading in places like the Washington pos New York Times, things of that
- 49:31nature. I don't think that they realize that Joe Manchin is now and has
- 49:37always been a West Virginia Democrat, pro life, pro gun, pro cole.
- 49:46Now that really doesn't conform to what the National Democratic Party stands for,
- 49:53but it's who Joe Manchin is. And the Republicans, of course aren't crazy
- 49:59about him either, but because they have seen him in many ways as caving,
- 50:04going along with others. You know, Joe Manchin didn't do himself,
- 50:07and he favors by bringing Hillary Clinton out campaigning back if you go back to
- 50:12it to twenty sixteen for that and then letter Bill Clinton to campaign for Hillary
- 50:21twenty fourteen, I should say, or twenty. Well, you know,
- 50:23if Mansion were to run for his senency again again, he gets beaten badly
- 50:31in my opinion, by Jim Justice. That's just a fact. So now
- 50:37Joe is going around the country looking for people who just want middle ground and
- 50:44some sanity in the world of extremes with the MAGA movement on one side and
- 50:49the Biden agenda on the other. And I will say this, there are
- 50:52a lot of us. Note I did say there are a lot of us
- 50:58out there, some with an R after their name, some with a D
- 51:00after their name, some that are independence. They're right along with you there.
- 51:07You know, is it going to be enough? No, because a
- 51:12Mansion run probably tips the scale towards Trump. But we will see Texas.
- 51:20Mansion is unrealistic if he thinks he can unite the middle for some phantom third
- 51:22party run. He knows he can't win a West Virginia Senate race with thirty
- 51:27one percent Democrat registration and twenty four percent no party affiliation. Despite this would
- 51:31be more than enough to outweigh the forty percent Republican votes. Yet he's going
- 51:36to unite middle of the road people in other states. Question Mark, This
- 51:39is an ego trip for big, big money backers and for Joe Manchin,
- 51:45says a texter. And this is for someone who would vote for Mansion for
- 51:50Senate. That is according to a Texter. All right. The Dave Allan
