- 0:11- of getting a call wrong don't stay contained.
- 0:14- That's not a complaint. It's a structural reality.
- 0:17- And it's why the most effective c suite
- 0:19- leaders are deliberate about where they go to

- 0:50- Hello, and welcome to the Becker's Healthcare podcast.
- 0:53- My name is Chanel Banger. And today, I
- 0:55- have the pleasure of speaking with regular guest,
- 0:58- Alan Compton, editor in chief at Beggars Healthcare,
- 1:02- who joins us to share insights into health
- 1:04- care trends he's keeping an eye on. Alan,
- 1:06- thank you so much for joining me today.
- 1:08- Why don't you take it away and tell
- 1:10- us about some of the things that you're
- 1:11- seeing out there?
- 1:12- Yes. Absolutely. Thanks so much, Janelle. It was
- 1:14- a pleasure.
- 1:15- So I think going on at any given
- 1:18- time, in health care finances, you know,
- 1:20- I think
- 1:21- what's been interesting about 2026
- 1:24- so far is we haven't had much hospital
- 1:28- closures.
- 1:30- Not that anybody looks forward to hospital closure,
- 1:32- but just given the financial challenges that we've
- 1:34- seen really ramping up this year in light
- 1:37- of, many, many financial challenges now and also
- 1:39- coming down the pipeline as it relates to
- 1:41- Medicaid funding and whatnot.
- 1:43- We saw about 24, 25 hospital closures in
- 1:46- 2024,
- 1:48- about 25 hospital closures in 2025.
- 1:51- This year, we've only seen four hospital closures,
- 1:55- and the latest, unfortunately, of which
- 1:58- just came last Friday in Michigan. So just
- 2:01- to kinda give a a readers a quick
- 2:02- update and breakdown of what happened there,
- 2:05- Sturgis Hospital in Michigan,
- 2:07- just on Friday, shut down operations completely
- 2:11- after years of financial challenges and really unsuccessful
- 2:15- efforts to secure
- 2:17- a long term path forward.
- 2:19- The hospital has cited years of these ongoing
- 2:21- financial challenges from declining reimbursement rates,
- 2:25- rising operating costs, and and decreases in patient
- 2:28- utilization
- 2:29- as really the key key reasons
- 2:31- for the closure.
- 2:33- This hospital wasn't something that's been independent hospital,
- 2:36- of course, but it was opened in 1925.
- 2:39- It's been
- 2:39- operating for a hundred or one years. A
- 2:41- real core core critical service provided to this
- 2:45- rural community.
- 2:46- I think what's interesting about this hospital as
- 2:48- well is Sturgis Hospital became one of the
- 2:51- first hospitals in the country,
- 2:54- and the first in Michigan
- 2:56- to officially convert to a rural emergency hospital.
- 2:59- That was in 2023.
- 3:02- So that designation will was,
- 3:04- rated by CMS to
- 3:06- strengthen emergency services and increase federal funding for
- 3:10- these high type of hospitals. So preventing some
- 3:13- of these rural community critical access hospitals from
- 3:15- closing completely,
- 3:17- Rather, they would sacrifice some of their inpatient
- 3:20- services and focus focus exclusively
- 3:23- on outpatient care and emergency care. So still
- 3:25- being able to buy provide those critical services
- 3:28- for some of those, rural communities.
- 3:31- So, unfortunately, that was the fourth fourth hospital
- 3:33- closure we reported on this year. And, just
- 3:35- given the financial challenge that we're seeing coming
- 3:37- down the pipeline, many, many hospitals in the
- 3:40- same boat as Sturgis Hospital in terms of
- 3:43- same same challenges that it cited, really declining
- 3:46- reimbursement rates, rising operating costs, inflation still, so
- 3:49- such a key problem as well, and labor
- 3:51- costs from these communities
- 3:53- and decreases in patient utilization.
- 3:55- So, unfortunately, we had to report on that
- 3:57- on that closure last week. Just a quick
- 3:59- update there of what we're seeing and what
- 4:01- we might potentially see
- 4:03- coming down the pipeline.
- 4:05- Jumping over to the East Coast and on
- 4:08- the other side of the spectrum,
- 4:09- we're seeing
- 4:11- no doubt we're seeing a lot of closures,
- 4:12- service cuts, scale backs across the board as
- 4:15- hospitals, health systems really shore up their finances.
- 4:18- One way that many hospitals are doing that
- 4:20- and also remaining open to remaining financially sustainable
- 4:24- is partnering,
- 4:26- with larger health systems being acquired, merging with
- 4:28- larger health systems for a larger financial backer.
- 4:32- So one interesting merger that we're following last
- 4:36- week is,
- 4:37- Hackensack
- 4:38- Meridian Health in New Jersey. Just signed a
- 4:41- letter of intent to explore a proposed merger
- 4:44- with Funderd and Health is also new in
- 4:46- New Jersey, a smaller,
- 4:48- one hospital health system there. So
- 4:51- under that proposed partnerships, those two systems will
- 4:53- combine their resources, technology,
- 4:56- expertise, really expand and support health care, focus
- 4:59- on outcomes,
- 5:00- clinical research and benefits,
- 5:02- and academic and community
- 5:04- benefit programs. So one of the
- 5:07- many recent mergers, acquisitions that we're seeing being
- 5:10- explored by these larger academic systems specifically,
- 5:14- and some of these smaller,
- 5:16- hospitals and hospital systems
- 5:18- across the board. So that, again, is a
- 5:20- letter of intent, not not in any way,
- 5:21- shape, or form a final agreement, but,
- 5:24- something that no doubt Hackensack Meridian Health is
- 5:27- exploring as it continues to grow.
- 5:30- Hunter and Health comprises
- 5:32- its flagship hospital and they've got a growing
- 5:34- network of about 30 or so medical practices
- 5:37- across Central New Jersey.
- 5:40- So that would it should that acquisition go
- 5:42- through, Hackensack Meridian would then grow to a
- 5:45- 19 hospital system, has about 500 care sites,
- 5:48- more than 40,000 employees, huge, huge academic system
- 5:51- with a great prominent reputation in the New
- 5:53- Jersey community there. So
- 5:56- one hospital closure, unfortunately, and then one big,
- 5:59- potential academic system acquiring
- 6:02- another hospital and growing bigger on the East
- 6:04- Coast Chanel. So those are two quick stories
- 6:06- I wanted to highlight today.
- 6:08- Amazing. Well, Alan, I wanna thank you as
- 6:10- always for keeping us updated on all of
- 6:12- these important trends and for joining me today
- 6:15- on the Becker Self Care Podcast. Thank you
- 6:17- so much. Always a pleasure. Thank you.
