- 0:00Leopard seals might be smarter hunters than we actually thought.
- 0:04Leopard seals have always had a reputation.
- 0:06Aggressive, solitary, and unpredictable.
- 0:09But what if they're also strategic?
- 0:12Because new research shows that they may be far more calculated than we
- 0:16have ever given them credit for.
- 0:18Leopard Seals sit near the top of the Antarctic food web.
- 0:21They eat penguins, they eat fish, and they eat other seals, but they're
- 0:27actually understudied compared to orcas, which we talked about yesterday.
- 0:30The media attention that leopard seals get.
- 0:33A lot of times you'll see them in cartoons.
- 0:35A lot of times you'll see them in movies where they are trying
- 0:38to hunt humans or they're trying to be aggressive against humans.
- 0:41Because they are a solitary animal, they do get a little protective and they can
- 0:45get aggressive towards divers who are in the water and have a camera on them.
- 0:49They've never really seen anybody get hurt by them.
- 0:51I don't know if there've been any reports, but we don't really
- 0:53see a lot of behavioral studies.
- 0:55We don't really see a lot of videos where you're actually
- 0:58learning about these leopard seals.
- 1:01You see them as enemies of the penguin.
- 1:03You don't see them being hunted by orcas.
- 1:05You don't really see them mating.
- 1:07You don't really see 'em rearing their young.
- 1:09It's a really interesting conundrum that you have here with an animal that is not
- 1:13exactly studied very well, and probably a lot of people have some bad or myths
- 1:19about them, thinking that they're only aggressive and they're not very good.
- 1:21But people do study them.
- 1:22In recent tagging and drone studies have shown that they use
- 1:25ambush strategies near ice edges.
- 1:27They have energy efficient hunting patterns.
- 1:30They have a repeated use of successful hunting zones.
- 1:33You see all of these behaviors.
- 1:36They're very interesting behaviors and a lot of times, like you can almost
- 1:39compare them to big cats on land.
- 1:41I know they're called leopard seals ' cause they've got the spots.
- 1:43But they use a lot of the same tactics.
- 1:47Ambush strategies.
- 1:48They have to be energy efficient because if they're not, you know,
- 1:50there's not as if there's a lot of food that's found them for them
- 1:53around there, just like in the African Savannah for a lot of the big cats.
- 1:57And of course, if you know of a hunting zone that is very popular, you'll
- 2:00repeat that hunting zone as a tactic.
- 2:02So I think that's a really interesting tactic for these animals.
- 2:05Now it's interesting that new findings have suggested that some leopard
- 2:09seals specialize more than others.
- 2:12So individuals so consistent behavior patterns.
- 2:15I think that's really interesting.
- 2:16This is not just random predation.
- 2:18This is an animal that is very interesting in the fact that it will
- 2:24hunt in different ways, and the more efficient it can get, the better it is.
- 2:29So do better hunters actually shape the ecosystems more.
- 2:33I mean, we talked yesterday about how orcas learn and they have
- 2:36patterns and they work together and they become better hunters.
- 2:40And then when climate change rears its ugly head and you see melting
- 2:43of ice, we're seeing that orcas are actually thriving in these conditions.
- 2:47And of course, their prey species, leopard seals, other seals as well as penguins
- 2:51also feel the burden of this type of work.
- 2:55And so putting animal personality research in there when you look at
- 2:59hunting, it's very interesting 'cause some individuals will be better than others.
- 3:04And it's just because they take more chances that could
- 3:06be good or that could be bad.
- 3:08They are willing to try new things.
- 3:11And so that will make their hunting better in most places, depending on
- 3:15the risk, of course, of what's around.
- 3:16So that's something to think about when we start thinking about how a hunter
- 3:21gets smarter how a hunter can do really, really well in these types of conditions.
- 3:27Now, of course, now you have climate pressure that's hitting
- 3:29it just like it does for orcas.
- 3:31And as ice changes, hunting grounds will shift.
- 3:34Penguin access also changes and competition may increase.
- 3:37So leopard seals may have to adapt pretty fast.
- 3:42Just like polar bears in the Arctic.
- 3:44Polar bears are losing ice flows and they need ice flows 'cause
- 3:47they are a Marine mammal even though people may not know that.
- 3:50Polar bears are in the water more than 60% of the time,
- 3:53which makes them Marine mammals.
- 3:55And so when the ice melts and they need to rest from swimming, 'cause
- 3:59they do need to rest and they need to hunt from that point of view, get the
- 4:02seals and grab them and bring them up.
- 4:04If you've ever seen polar bears at a zoo.
- 4:06You know, one of the interesting things, they'll have these barrels that
- 4:08are kind of open, and those barrels are, and they're put in the water.
- 4:12They're supposed to mimic seals being in the water as a bear goes
- 4:15down with this big claws, grabs it with its nails and punctures the
- 4:19seal and brings it up onto the ice.
- 4:21That's what those barrels mimic, by the way.
- 4:23That's what they're supposed to mimic, And so it gets that behavior trains
- 4:26them to be that, to use that behavior.
- 4:28So I think that's kind of interesting, but ice really matters for these polar bears.
- 4:33And if you are losing ice due to climate change, a lot of these
- 4:35bears are having to swim longer.
- 4:37They're drowning because of it 'cause they can't keep up.
- 4:40And so now they're being more on land, so they've had to change their way.
- 4:44And a lot of that has become because of their death.
- 4:47So there are winners and losers.
- 4:48Orcas do well when ice recedes, but also leopard seals, we're
- 4:52not sure how they're gonna do.
- 4:53We're not sure if they're gonna put more pressure on penguins or if they're
- 4:56gonna put less pressure on penguins.
- 4:58And the thing is, is in a unknown role, in an ecosystem with an animal that's
- 5:02not really studied, we just don't fully understand how much pressure they put on
- 5:05penguins and how they compete with orcas.
- 5:08That's a really interesting thing is like, are they dangerous to orcas?
- 5:11Do they fight against orcas?
- 5:13I really don't know to be honest.
- 5:14I don't know much about these leopard seals.
- 5:16Over the weeks we'll probably try and see if we can get a leopard seal some
- 5:20biologist in, because I think it's a really interesting topic to look at
- 5:24how these leopard seals really do well.
- 5:27How do they actually hunt?
- 5:29Are they being predated on by orcas now that ice melts and maybe there
- 5:33won't be as many penguins left?
- 5:35Are they competing with orcas to get penguins?
- 5:37It's gonna be really interesting to see how these seals are working.
- 5:41But the interesting part is though, because they have so many different
- 5:44types of strategies, leopard seals aren't just brutal predators.
- 5:48They're actually strategic ones.
- 5:50And that changes how we think about Antarctic ecosystems because
- 5:54now we have two predators that are very, very good at hunting.
- 5:59And we have these penguins that are sitting there,
- 6:02literally sitting penguins.
- 6:03I'm not gonna say sitting ducks.
- 6:04That's too much of a pun.
- 6:05But literally sitting penguins.
- 6:07And with the ice receding, they have less area to use and they have less
- 6:11area to hide, to get away from.
- 6:13It's gonna be interesting to see these penguins, which we'll
- 6:15talk about in the next episode.
