- 0:13So I, I was looking through this WP Goldmine audit of over sixty thousand plugins in
- 0:18the official directory, sixty thousand two hundred and fifty seven to be exact.
- 0:22And, and, and get this, forty three point eight percent of them,
- 0:27that is twenty six thousand three hundred and eighty seven plugins,
- 0:30have not been updated in over two years.
- 0:33Wait, forty three point eight percent?
- 0:35Yeah!
- 0:36Over twenty six thousand plugins just sitting there, totally untouched.
- 0:40And these are not just obscure single install experiments.
- 0:44Take Limit Login Attempts, right?
- 0:46Over three hundred thousand active installs, and its last update was April twenty
- 0:50twenty three.
- 0:51Or Layout Grid Block, two hundred thousand installs, completely untouched since July
- 0:56twenty twenty three.
- 0:57People are still installing these on fresh builds purely out of muscle memory.
- 1:02It, it is wild because we treat the repository like this evergreen grocery store
- 1:07where everything on the shelf is fresh, but almost half the inventory is literally
- 1:12rotting.
- 1:13And yet, people keep downloading them because it solves one tiny problem today,
- 1:17ignoring the technical debt tomorrow.
- 1:19Well, and, and that brings up what I call the low rating utility paradox.
- 1:24Look at some of these massive official hosting plugins.
- 1:27SiteGround has an AI Agent plugin with over a million installs,
- 1:30but its rating is sitting at one point four out of five stars.
- 1:34Their Image Optimization plugin also has over a million installs,
- 1:38and it is rated one point seven out of five stars.
- 1:41One point seven!
- 1:42One point seven stars with a million active sites is insane,
- 1:45Nick.
- 1:46But think about why that happens.
- 1:48Site owners hit a quick button in their hosting dashboard for convenience,
- 1:52but these heavy utility suites end up completely bloating the admin DOM,
- 1:56injecting scripts everywhere, and locking you into a single vendor ecosystem.
- 2:00Right, it, it creates this massive visual clutter and extra server overhead for
- 2:05features that could be handled so much cleaner.
- 2:08Though, Nick, you have to admit, as the guy behind wpfavs, you built an entire
- 2:12platform around helping people collect and organize these little utility plugins.
- 2:17I, I did, I did!
- 2:19Building wpfavs made me look at my own habits, and I realized I had this massive
- 2:24stash of favorite micro tools saved.
- 2:27Things like AddQuicktag or Disable Google Fonts.
- 2:31They are fantastic when you are building quickly on a Friday afternoon.
- 2:34But, um, at what exact point does a handy developer shortcut cross the line and
- 2:40become abandoned liability on a client site?
- 2:43When the original developer walks away and a core update breaks the database
- 2:47structure, that is when.
- 2:49Which is why the entire philosophy of installing fifteen micro plugins for tiny
- 2:53admin tweaks is completely dying in twenty twenty six.
- 2:56Look at what is happening with tools like Novamira CLI.
- 2:59You can literally connect terminal agents like Claude Code,
- 3:03Codex CLI, or Gemini CLI directly to your site through shell commands.
- 3:08You do not need a plugin to rewrite database strings or configure redirects anymore.
- 3:12Exactly!
- 3:13And Benjamin Intal showed off that Ahentic AI workspace experiment recently.
- 3:18It hooks straight into native WordPress APIs, no external servers or middleman MCPs
- 3:24required.
- 3:25It can read the entire site, manage post edits, and trigger plugin installations
- 3:29natively.
- 3:30Why install twelve single task plugins when a local AI agent can execute PHP and
- 3:36handle database queries directly through clean core endpoints?
- 3:40Precisely.
- 3:40The future is consolidating into deep, purpose built platforms.
- 3:45Look at FluentCart for e commerce, or Melapress with WP Activity Log and Login
- 3:50Security for complete site hardening.
- 3:52You get deep performance, active maintenance, and tight integration instead of
- 3:56stitching together twenty fragile micro scripts.
- 3:59Mm, I agree on ditching micro scripts, Ben, but I worry about swinging too far
- 4:03toward massive all in one monoliths.
- 4:05When you stack everything into giant multi feature platforms,
- 4:09you create these huge single points of failure.
- 4:12If an autonomous AI agent tries to parse a site to extract clean content or schema,
- 4:18a massive monolithic dashboard layer can actually block or distort that data flow.
- 4:23So then where do we land for a modern agency stack?
- 4:26I think we are looking at a hard cap, like a strict five plugin ceiling for any
- 4:30professional build.
- 4:32You have one solid tool for custom fields, one for caching and performance,
- 4:37one for security like Melapress, an e commerce engine like FluentCart if needed,
- 4:42and a unified terminal AI interface like Novamira CLI to handle all the tiny
- 4:47operational chores.
- 4:48Five plugins total.
- 4:49That forces real discipline.
- 4:51No more installing an entire plugin just to hide the admin bar or disable an image
- 4:55size.
- 4:55I love that limit.
- 4:56It keeps the site lean for users and infinitely easier for AI models to interpret
- 5:01and manage.
- 5:02Alright, clean stacks and terminal agents it is.
- 5:05Good chatting, guys, talk soon.
