Latest / Early Edition with Ryan Bridge / Andrew Dickens: Finally we deal with RMA reform
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: For as long as I've been in talk radio, and
- 0:02Speaker 1: I've been talking to people about RMA reform. And you know,
- 0:06Speaker 1: I first turned up and taught radio back in nineteen
- 0:08Speaker 1: ninety six. It's a long time. The Resource Management Act,
- 0:11Speaker 1: it's been around a long time too, introduced in nineteen
- 0:14Speaker 1: ninety one, and it's fair to say it's ballooned into
- 0:16Speaker 1: being an albatross around our necks. To comply, you need
- 0:19Speaker 1: to pay a fortune to check your compliance. Authorities have
- 0:22Speaker 1: to spend weeks reviewing your plans. That costs a fortune.
- 0:25Speaker 1: So today we're going to learn what comes next. Now.
- 0:28Speaker 1: The reason the RMA grew like a cancer of growth
- 0:31Speaker 1: around our progress is quite simple. Too many people took
- 0:34Speaker 1: too many liberties and caused too much damage and worrying
- 0:36Speaker 1: about their margins, they took shortcuts and then projects failed,
- 0:39Speaker 1: And like so many laws, we had to take into
- 0:42Speaker 1: account those lowest common denominators, the developers who did it cheap,
- 0:46Speaker 1: the developers who did it bad and then liquidated the
- 0:48Speaker 1: company to leave others to clean up the mess, or
- 0:50Speaker 1: the people who built stuff and it fell down, or
- 0:52Speaker 1: the people who built stuff and it polluted the environment.
- 0:55Speaker 1: The experience is why many will not welcome today's simplification
- 0:59Speaker 1: of the rule, but the overcompensation for those bad actors
- 1:04Speaker 1: has cost us all too much. So today I think
- 1:08Speaker 1: we're all looking for efficiencies. We are still looking for
- 1:11Speaker 1: the safeguards to protect us from the cowboys who are
- 1:13Speaker 1: far too many in our countries these days. And apparently
- 1:16Speaker 1: there's going to be some national agency that's going to
- 1:18Speaker 1: overlook particularly the environmental concern. So I wish Chris Bishop
- 1:22Speaker 1: all the best of luck today. The work needs to
- 1:25Speaker 1: be done, but again I beg the developers not to
- 1:27Speaker 1: take the piss. Your selfish concern for your bottom line
- 1:30Speaker 1: has resulted in this mess, so just stop it. Here's
- 1:33Speaker 1: a thing for anybody building anything, whether you're getting a
- 1:35Speaker 1: building consent or a resource consent or anything. Build it once,
- 1:38Speaker 1: build it right, make it last, and care about your legacy.
