Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: It is day one of the Democratic National Convention in Chicago. Today.
- 0:04Speaker 1: Biden is going to be speaking later on our time.
- 0:07Speaker 1: We've got Obama speaking Tuesday. Hillary Clinton is speaking as well.
- 0:12Speaker 1: You've got Waltz on Thursday, and then you've got Harris
- 0:15Speaker 1: the main event on Friday, our time. Simon Marx is
- 0:19Speaker 1: with Feature Story News is a correspondent. He's at the
- 0:21Speaker 1: convention in Chicago and he's with us. Now, good morning.
- 0:27Speaker 1: We'll get there in a second. It's a long way
- 0:29Speaker 1: from here to Chicago. Good morning, Simon, Good morning, Ryan.
- 0:34Speaker 2: Can you hear me?
- 0:34Speaker 1: I got you just fine. Thank you for being with us.
- 0:37Speaker 1: What's the main event. What's happening today?
- 0:41Speaker 2: Well, they're getting the awkward stuff out of the way
- 0:43Speaker 2: here today. We're beginning to see some delegates arriving here
- 0:46Speaker 2: at the United Center where this ninety six hour made
- 0:50Speaker 2: for TV spectacular will be playing out over the next
- 0:53Speaker 2: four days. And of course it's all about swooning over
- 0:57Speaker 2: Kamala Harris and propelling her on the her less than
- 1:00Speaker 2: eighty day journey to election Day, but to night about
- 1:04Speaker 2: swooning over President Joe Biden and paying fulsome tribute to him,
- 1:09Speaker 2: not least for his decision to drop out of his
- 1:13Speaker 2: re election campaign, so President Biden will be the main
- 1:17Speaker 2: speaker on the first night here, alongside First Lady Jill
- 1:22Speaker 2: Biden and former First Lady Hillary Clinton. In many ways,
- 1:26Speaker 2: the Democrats consigning some of the more uncomfortable moments of
- 1:31Speaker 2: this convention to the first night in order to get
- 1:35Speaker 2: them out of the way, to clear the decks, so
- 1:37Speaker 2: that Kamala Harris can then pivot away from her ongoing
- 1:41Speaker 2: need at the moment to pay tribute to Joe Biden
- 1:44Speaker 2: and to focus instead on the direction that she wants
- 1:46Speaker 2: to take this party, not just between now an election day,
- 1:49Speaker 2: but of course over the next four years. If she wins.
- 1:53Speaker 1: Four weeks since Spiden pulled out of the right, two
- 1:56Speaker 1: weeks since Harris officially won the nomination through that role,
- 1:59Speaker 1: call does is she going to given in? Has she?
- 2:04Speaker 2: Do?
- 2:04Speaker 1: You know? Have you heard whether she's doing a one
- 2:05Speaker 1: on one with anybody around the convention or is there
- 2:08Speaker 1: a press conference.
- 2:11Speaker 2: There's no indication of an interview or a press conference.
- 2:13Speaker 2: They certainly haven't announced that yet. And as you know,
- 2:16Speaker 2: she's been heavily criticized by former President Donald Trump for
- 2:20Speaker 2: her failure to give interviews. But I think that the
- 2:23Speaker 2: Harris team, you know, they've been thrust into this unexpectedly.
- 2:28Speaker 2: Behind the scenes, they're trying to figure out what all
- 2:30Speaker 2: of this means in terms of the party's platform. It's manifesto,
- 2:34Speaker 2: which will be officially adopted here, because they've basically inherited
- 2:38Speaker 2: Joe Biden's manifesto. And you've got tens of thousands of
- 2:41Speaker 2: protesters bearing down or threatening to bear down on the
- 2:44Speaker 2: convention site saying they want the platform to be rewritten
- 2:47Speaker 2: certainly as far as the Middle East is concerned and
- 2:50Speaker 2: the crisis in Gaza, and she wants this to go
- 2:54Speaker 2: absolutely flawlessly over the next four days. There is a
- 2:57Speaker 2: margin for error for her. She's had a huge fillip
- 3:01Speaker 2: here in the last couple of hours. A fresh Fox
- 3:04Speaker 2: News poll suggests that she has a six point lead
- 3:08Speaker 2: over Donald Trump among likely voters, and she'll be hoping
- 3:11Speaker 2: to get a big bump out of this convention when
- 3:14Speaker 2: it is over cementing that lead in place, and then
- 3:18Speaker 2: perhaps they will get to interviews, a forum in which
- 3:22Speaker 2: she has not always excelled in the past.
- 3:25Speaker 1: Interesting, isn't it, Simon? Thanks for that, Simon Marx. If
- 3:28Speaker 1: it's in correspondent at the DNC in Chicago, which kicks
- 3:32Speaker 1: off today. For more from news talks, b listen live
