- 0:33Speaker 2: Here.
- 0:33Speaker 4: We are expected to have a day where pads will
- 0:36Speaker 4: not be on after three straight days of padded practice
- 0:39Speaker 4: out here at Broncos Park. Alex Ryan Emy filling in
- 0:42Speaker 4: for Kaner alongside Mark Moser and our guest Curt Received
- 0:45Speaker 4: the Ramos Law hotline. That is Jeff Legwall, the ESPN lego.
- 0:50Speaker 5: What's up man in the flesh warrnant fellas.
- 0:51Speaker 1: That's the best part of.
- 0:52Speaker 4: Training camp is that we get to have you in
- 0:54Speaker 4: the tent with us rather than on zoom.
- 0:56Speaker 6: But he's not on camera, kitchen, he's not on camera.
- 0:59Speaker 6: He's little camera shy. Yeah, take our word for it.
- 1:02Speaker 5: Like here, it's a it's a contractual thing.
- 1:04Speaker 1: Oh is it okay? Good? Yeah?
- 1:05Speaker 4: If he doesn't have his his kitchen cabinets behind him.
- 1:07Speaker 1: Can't.
- 1:08Speaker 5: That's a contractual thing.
- 1:09Speaker 6: Yeah, they got to be able to see the fridge.
- 1:10Speaker 6: Otherwise he's not on he's not on the TV and
- 1:13Speaker 6: I'm live.
- 1:13Speaker 5: There's all kinds of rules we will.
- 1:15Speaker 4: We'll get into the minutia of Broncos camp and what
- 1:18Speaker 4: we saw yesterday. But I floated you this question going
- 1:20Speaker 4: into the break. The akron Zips are giving a lucky
- 1:23Speaker 4: fan the ability to script their opening drive of the season.
- 1:28Speaker 5: And that's where we're at now.
- 1:30Speaker 4: If Sean, if Sean gave you the ability, what's the
- 1:34Speaker 4: script for the opening drive?
- 1:36Speaker 7: Uh?
- 1:36Speaker 5: Play action and every throat of Marvin Mams just for
- 1:41Speaker 5: the ball.
- 1:41Speaker 6: Yeah, that's fantastic. I'm I'm Jeff, I'm on your bandwagon.
- 1:46Speaker 1: Man, you you you do you? I agree? I would
- 1:49Speaker 1: do the same damn thing, or or.
- 1:51Speaker 7: I would uh uh yeah two back too, tight end
- 1:55Speaker 7: throw play action. I gotta have some runs in there
- 1:58Speaker 7: because I'm a dinosaur. But anyway, yeah, got a couple of.
- 2:04Speaker 6: Hey man, Uh, we were talking earlier and yesterday I
- 2:07Speaker 6: thought d Mac and Tyler and Scotty and coach they
- 2:11Speaker 6: dubbed it correctly. This is the uh, nothing to see
- 2:14Speaker 6: here camp so far from Peyton, right, I mean everything,
- 2:16Speaker 6: And that's.
- 2:17Speaker 7: His team retention right right, I don't know twenty I
- 2:20Speaker 7: honestly can't remember covering a team I mean last year
- 2:24Speaker 7: that had retention that was already I think one of
- 2:27Speaker 7: the most biggest returning percentages I had ever covered. You know,
- 2:31Speaker 7: this is my fortieth year, I think, so. Uh, that's
- 2:35Speaker 7: a lot of teams and this one even up the
- 2:38Speaker 7: ante they have. They have twenty of twenty two starters
- 2:41Speaker 7: from the AFC Championship game back. If you count the
- 2:44Speaker 7: special teams, guys, it's twenty five, you know, yeah, twenty
- 2:50Speaker 7: five or twenty three returning players.
- 2:52Speaker 5: You know, it's it's unbelievable.
- 2:53Speaker 6: It's pretty amazing. But it's also the Hey, look, Jalen
- 2:56Speaker 6: Waddle stops on it, on it. You know, you could
- 2:59Speaker 6: see it coming maybe a little. The guys are watching him.
- 3:01Speaker 6: He's been a little bit ginger. He stops and and
- 3:03Speaker 6: he's off the field. He's fine. You know, most night
- 3:06Speaker 6: has nothing to see here. Well, you know, Courland Sutton's
- 3:08Speaker 6: second day in a row that he's not probably nothing
- 3:10Speaker 6: to see here. Me he's fine, mean, and I have
- 3:12Speaker 6: no reason in the world. Jeff who disbelieves Sean Payton.
- 3:15Speaker 6: I think he's absolutely right.
- 3:16Speaker 5: I'm and that's said.
- 3:19Speaker 7: You know, he said everything was okay with bo and
- 3:22Speaker 7: then oh, by the way, he had a second surgery, right.
- 3:25Speaker 6: Uh.
- 3:25Speaker 7: You know, he doesn't like talking about injuries. He really
- 3:28Speaker 7: doesn't like talking about injuries in August. Uh, when he
- 3:32Speaker 7: feels like he doesn't have to.
- 3:34Speaker 1: Uh.
- 3:35Speaker 7: So you know, I'm not surprised by the tenor of
- 3:38Speaker 7: his answers, but that's said. I've I've not seen a
- 3:41Speaker 7: guy get two VET days back to back. I mean,
- 3:44Speaker 7: I've seen guys held out of team drills for consecutive
- 3:48Speaker 7: days and and all of those things. But you know, uh,
- 3:52Speaker 7: I think they feel pretty good about where they are.
- 3:54Speaker 7: I think the whole structure of the off season now, uh,
- 3:58Speaker 7: they've done so much much of the stuff and OTAs
- 4:01Speaker 7: and mini camp they would have done in the past,
- 4:04Speaker 7: and the first two weeks of training camp. So I
- 4:08Speaker 7: think sometimes we have to wrap our heads around it's
- 4:11Speaker 7: a different calendar than it was twenty years ago, and
- 4:14Speaker 7: they've adjusted and this is how camp's gonna look, you know,
- 4:18Speaker 7: moving forward.
- 4:19Speaker 4: The defense has kind of dominated the day the last
- 4:22Speaker 4: three practices.
- 4:23Speaker 1: Which is it.
- 4:24Speaker 4: I wouldn't say it's a far cry from what we
- 4:25Speaker 4: saw the first couple of days when we were out here,
- 4:27Speaker 4: But the offense looked better on day one and day two.
- 4:31Speaker 4: Is it simply because well, you don't have your starting
- 4:33Speaker 4: center and Courtland Sutton has sat out to practices and
- 4:35Speaker 4: then Jalen Wattle twenty five minutes into practice walks off
- 4:39Speaker 4: on his own after like pulling up on a route
- 4:42Speaker 4: against air. Are they struggling because they don't have three
- 4:45Speaker 4: starters or is it just the defense showing up and
- 4:47Speaker 4: kind of dominating the line of scrimmage.
- 4:49Speaker 7: Well, I think all but one day to me has
- 4:52Speaker 7: been a defensive flavor. This is how camp looks when
- 4:56Speaker 7: you're good on defense. You know, This is how the
- 5:00Speaker 7: twenty fifteen in and Peyton Manning, you know, quarterback. This's
- 5:03Speaker 7: how camp looked the defense. This defense is gonna win
- 5:07Speaker 7: a lot of days because they're good. You know, they're
- 5:10Speaker 7: one of the league's best if when when everybody's healthy
- 5:12Speaker 7: and on the field, So you know, and again you know,
- 5:17Speaker 7: all the teams I've covered that have had really good defenses,
- 5:20Speaker 7: it's this. It's a slugfest in camp and you don't
- 5:23Speaker 7: have a good idea I think sometimes of where the
- 5:27Speaker 7: offense is until they simply just play somebody else. And
- 5:31Speaker 7: the rub of it this year is they do not
- 5:33Speaker 7: have a joint practice, so they won't even get, you know,
- 5:37Speaker 7: a little glimpse.
- 5:38Speaker 1: Do you miss that?
- 5:40Speaker 7: Well, I think it's a good thing, but I think
- 5:42Speaker 7: for Sean, his thing is is if you have a
- 5:45Speaker 7: joint practice, you miss an installation day, and then you
- 5:50Speaker 7: miss the practice day that comes from that installation day,
- 5:53Speaker 7: so it's.
- 5:54Speaker 6: Really a two day, so you don't gain more than
- 5:56Speaker 6: you give up.
- 5:57Speaker 7: In his mind, this year they needed the installation day
- 6:00Speaker 7: because I think Davis Web's a first year play caller.
- 6:03Speaker 5: They have tweaked some things in the offense, you know.
- 6:06Speaker 7: I think he just saw it as a they need
- 6:08Speaker 7: those days more right now than they need, you know,
- 6:12Speaker 7: the Packers.
- 6:13Speaker 5: To be in here for a day before they play
- 6:16Speaker 5: the preseason game or something.
- 6:17Speaker 6: Let's talk about the wideout's real quick, because I was
- 6:19Speaker 6: reading your article that Franklin and and.
- 6:23Speaker 1: Bryant. You know they got plenty of time yesterday.
- 6:26Speaker 6: When you've got Sutton and Wadle out, those guys are
- 6:28Speaker 6: gonna get plenty of snaps with the first team. I
- 6:31Speaker 6: look at it, Jeff, if you're keeping five, your five
- 6:34Speaker 6: or set, there's no there's no movement whatsoever. And I
- 6:37Speaker 6: know they I see a little Jordan Himphrey keeps turning
- 6:40Speaker 6: up like a bad penny. But when he turns back up,
- 6:42Speaker 6: they use him. I mean for crying out loud. He
- 6:44Speaker 6: actually gets thrown to and he makes plays. What are
- 6:48Speaker 6: we looking at there?
- 6:49Speaker 7: You're gonna need an exceptional camp in a preseason to
- 6:53Speaker 7: get them to keep six. So all these guys that
- 6:57Speaker 7: are getting noticed, you know, Keen Butler, Bandy Butler's, little
- 7:02Speaker 7: Jordan Humphrey, I mean, they're all getting noticed. They're all
- 7:04Speaker 7: making some plays, but you're gonna need an exceptional preseason
- 7:09Speaker 7: to get them to keep six. There's just no room there. Obviously,
- 7:12Speaker 7: injury influences something. If somebody gets hurt, then the spot's open.
- 7:16Speaker 7: But with the practice squad the way it is now,
- 7:19Speaker 7: you know you can keep veterans so that you know,
- 7:22Speaker 7: and little Jordan Humphrey especially has already shown he's willing
- 7:26Speaker 7: to be the veteran guy on the practice squad doing
- 7:28Speaker 7: very malleable that we're doing the elevation game, and I
- 7:32Speaker 7: think they will use that to manipulate some of the
- 7:37Speaker 7: you know, how many they keep at the fifty three
- 7:40Speaker 7: cutdown may not be how it looks in October type
- 7:44Speaker 7: of thing, just because I think they're gonna use that.
- 7:47Speaker 7: The movement you can have and sometimes you know, a
- 7:50Speaker 7: guy like little Jordan Humphrey, you're not going to keep
- 7:53Speaker 7: on the cut to fifty three because that means you
- 7:55Speaker 7: guaranteed his salary, so you can you can cut them
- 7:58Speaker 7: bring him back. But you know this time of year,
- 8:01Speaker 7: everybody asked to clear waivers, so you are kind of
- 8:04Speaker 7: risking you rolling the dice on anybody you put out there.
- 8:07Speaker 4: Jeff Legwold is brought to you by the International Brotherhood
- 8:10Speaker 4: of Electrical Workers ib W Local sixty eight. Start with
- 8:14Speaker 4: a job and end with a career. When you did
- 8:16Speaker 4: your Broncos training camp preview, you talked about three key
- 8:19Speaker 4: position battles, which was off ball linebacker, it was defensive tackle,
- 8:23Speaker 4: trying to fill in for the departure of Jonathan Franklin
- 8:25Speaker 4: Myers as well as the bulk of the running back
- 8:29Speaker 4: two carries. What have you seen with those three position battles.
- 8:33Speaker 7: The defensive tackle one maybe over que and Onneedham or
- 8:38Speaker 7: they've been front and center that young rookie is going
- 8:42Speaker 7: to be a ballplayer.
- 8:43Speaker 5: I think we talked a.
- 8:44Speaker 4: Lot about like DJ Jones and Malcolm Roach yesterday.
- 8:47Speaker 7: But you think it's the no I mean, they're they're
- 8:49Speaker 7: in that other rotation. But the Franklin Myers snap, those
- 8:53Speaker 7: are five hundred snaps they have to fill. That's how
- 8:56Speaker 7: I characterize.
- 8:57Speaker 1: So was Rikan oneidam of those are the guys that
- 9:00Speaker 1: to me into the rotation.
- 9:02Speaker 5: Yeah, they're they're in the mix.
- 9:03Speaker 1: Uh.
- 9:03Speaker 5: You know, Wazriquez had a really good camp so far.
- 9:07Speaker 6: Well, when you get praise from Sean Payton, I mean.
- 9:09Speaker 7: And Anetham is that's a that's gonna end up looking
- 9:12Speaker 7: like a pretty pretty good third round pick. That he's
- 9:16Speaker 7: got length power, uh plays you know, deep into the deep,
- 9:22Speaker 7: into the down. I mean, he's he's that's a young
- 9:26Speaker 7: player who came in ready to go. So that's a
- 9:29Speaker 7: good selection, you know. I know it didn't make people
- 9:32Speaker 7: fire the confetti cannons, as I say when on Draft Day,
- 9:35Speaker 7: but that's he's gonna end up being a nice player
- 9:38Speaker 7: for them right out.
- 9:39Speaker 1: Of the gate.
- 9:40Speaker 6: I I just remember our conversation, like it was yesterday,
- 9:43Speaker 6: because it probably was. But we're talking about Caleb Blowner.
- 9:46Speaker 6: We're talking about the tight end room and how you
- 9:48Speaker 6: know there's a billion guys in there and so on,
- 9:51Speaker 6: And you were talking about his attributes in his thirty
- 9:53Speaker 6: nine inch first and he's six to seven already and
- 9:55Speaker 6: all that, and his teammates like, we got to.
- 9:57Speaker 1: Figure out a way to get this guy out there
- 9:58Speaker 1: and so on. But it's an out out there.
- 10:00Speaker 6: But then I remember the Jeff lag Walden, the Jeff Lagwalden.
- 10:03Speaker 6: This is this is Jeff lakewald commandment. You can't make
- 10:07Speaker 6: the club in the tub. And that's an absolute fact.
- 10:10Speaker 6: I mean, I think that every kind of guy's fault,
- 10:13Speaker 6: you know, correct, right? You know they just can't control.
- 10:15Speaker 1: Well, Jeff.
- 10:16Speaker 6: There have been plenty of guys who have washed out
- 10:17Speaker 6: of this league just because they couldn't stay healthy, not
- 10:19Speaker 6: because the team didn't want them.
- 10:20Speaker 7: Yeah know what I mean? I think what helps him
- 10:22Speaker 7: right now? I mean a they they kept him on
- 10:25Speaker 7: the roster. They didn't have him open camp on pup.
- 10:28Speaker 7: He didn't open camp on any of the lists, so
- 10:31Speaker 7: they felt like he was close enough to keep him
- 10:35Speaker 7: on the roster when they opened camp. Now, we haven't
- 10:37Speaker 7: seen him yet, but Sean did tell us the other
- 10:41Speaker 7: day that he had gotten their attention.
- 10:44Speaker 5: Enough that before he got her they could be patient
- 10:47Speaker 5: with it.
- 10:47Speaker 7: That that impacts, you know, because he was asked, are
- 10:51Speaker 7: you're concerned yet that he's not on the field, and
- 10:54Speaker 7: his answer was essentially, yeah, if you're not on the field,
- 10:56Speaker 7: I'm concerned.
- 10:57Speaker 5: But they hiss.
- 11:01Speaker 7: Was seen before he got hurt, so I think that
- 11:04Speaker 7: will impact their decision and in how they bring him back.
- 11:08Speaker 5: I think he is a real chance.
- 11:11Speaker 7: To make the roster there, but you know they may
- 11:14Speaker 7: have to that may be where the extra receiver goes
- 11:17Speaker 7: is Ultimately that roster spot may go to tight end
- 11:22Speaker 7: as they try to keep guys who can do a
- 11:25Speaker 7: variety of things, but they need they need athleticism there.
- 11:28Speaker 7: You know, it's fine that they have guys he he
- 11:31Speaker 7: thinks are smart and and do all the right things.
- 11:35Speaker 7: And it is from an assignment standpoint, it's one of
- 11:39Speaker 7: the most difficult positions to play in Peyton's offense because
- 11:43Speaker 7: you have all of the past protections, you have all
- 11:46Speaker 7: of the run fits, and you have all your routes,
- 11:50Speaker 7: so you get like the whole package, like receivers don't
- 11:54Speaker 7: have to worry about the protection fronts right and knowing
- 11:59Speaker 7: bost to get in and out of those and all
- 12:02Speaker 7: the you know, tight ends have to know all of it.
- 12:05Speaker 7: So it's really hard for a guy like Jolly the
- 12:07Speaker 7: rookie to get all that in your head enough to
- 12:11Speaker 7: show them, okay, you can play on the week one,
- 12:14Speaker 7: but they need Jolie's athleticism. They need loaners athleticism. They
- 12:18Speaker 7: need athleticism that at that spot. Because Ingram Ingram has
- 12:23Speaker 7: shown he's still got some run skills, and some of
- 12:26Speaker 7: the defenders have told me that's a tougher matchup than
- 12:30Speaker 7: people give it credit for. He's still a good mover.
- 12:33Speaker 1: Hopefully continue to utilize them more than they did last season.
- 12:38Speaker 7: Davis, you know, fifty catches is a lot, but we
- 12:40Speaker 7: I think you're talking impact correct. That is correct if
- 12:43Speaker 7: he had forty catches and twenty were far more impacted,
- 12:47Speaker 7: exactly better year. But Davis Webb has already shown he's
- 12:52Speaker 7: a lot more about things between the numbers than they've
- 12:56Speaker 7: run in the past. I'm sure Sewn has called it,
- 12:59Speaker 7: but I think I think that's the hurdle they're trying
- 13:01Speaker 7: to get bow Nicks over is there's a whole section
- 13:04Speaker 7: of the field you're not using to the max and
- 13:07Speaker 7: and they need to do that.
- 13:09Speaker 6: It's funny because I'll look at the tight end grouping
- 13:11Speaker 6: right and I'm thinking, okay, you add loader into that too.
- 13:13Speaker 6: He'd be easy to spot because he's so tall. But
- 13:15Speaker 6: you throw the full back in and just like that's
- 13:18Speaker 6: a lot of dudes.
- 13:19Speaker 1: There's just a bunch. There's just a bunch of dudes
- 13:21Speaker 1: in that groups like a little pack.
- 13:23Speaker 7: This is a team where you know they're gonna be
- 13:25Speaker 7: putting guys out there that other people grab yause you
- 13:29Speaker 7: know they have a lot better backups than some teams
- 13:32Speaker 7: have in the front line.
- 13:33Speaker 4: All right, talk to me about the rookie and Jonah Coleman.
- 13:36Speaker 4: What have you seen out of him and.
- 13:37Speaker 5: Him he's gonna play?
- 13:39Speaker 7: Yeah, yeah, No, he's he's physical, uh, quick to the whole,
- 13:44Speaker 7: very decisive.
- 13:45Speaker 5: I think that's the one thing he's.
- 13:47Speaker 1: Not you know that.
- 13:48Speaker 7: I think Julil and Tyler Badat are probably battling it
- 13:52Speaker 7: out for that last the fourth running. You know, they
- 13:54Speaker 7: can always keep five backs, but that hasn't happened very often.
- 13:58Speaker 4: Well, especially if you're talking about being an extra roster
- 14:00Speaker 4: spot for a guy like Luner.
- 14:02Speaker 7: Well, I mean, you know there's gonna be some extra
- 14:04Speaker 7: roster spots come in, and you know, if somebody gets
- 14:07Speaker 7: hurt in the preseason and it's a three week injury,
- 14:10Speaker 7: that's also the kind of thing that influences. But Coleman
- 14:14Speaker 7: is in the mix, and we haven't even seen some
- 14:17Speaker 7: of his best, Like in past protection. I went back
- 14:20Speaker 7: and before the draft and looked at all those snaps
- 14:23Speaker 7: and uh, he doesn't just get in the way.
- 14:26Speaker 5: He's he's looking to clean.
- 14:28Speaker 1: People bowling ball.
- 14:29Speaker 5: That's gonna He's a tough guy in.
- 14:31Speaker 7: Pass protection, and that is every running back coach I
- 14:34Speaker 7: ain't known, from Bobby Turner to Eric Stutisville to to
- 14:39Speaker 7: all these guys who've helped me through the years dissect
- 14:42Speaker 7: that position. Every single one of them will tell you
- 14:46Speaker 7: what gets a rookie on the field the fastest pass protection.
- 14:48Speaker 4: Can we expect to see that on Saturday during the
- 14:51Speaker 4: controlled scrimmage.
- 14:52Speaker 7: Yeah, I'm not sure how deep they'll get into the
- 14:55Speaker 7: you know, how much impact they're gonna play. I think
- 14:57Speaker 7: they would play with what they call thud speed, which
- 14:59Speaker 7: is you impact the runner.
- 15:02Speaker 5: But you do not take them to the ground.
- 15:04Speaker 4: Yeah, someone got taken to the ground yesterday.
- 15:06Speaker 1: Well, if somebody's on the ground at this camp, do that.
- 15:09Speaker 5: It's something they got.
- 15:11Speaker 7: They got a lecture after I think it was I
- 15:15Speaker 7: forget who rolled into bow Malcolm Roach. Malcolm Roach rolled
- 15:19Speaker 7: in the bowl and uh, they got a little lecture
- 15:21Speaker 7: after that.
- 15:22Speaker 1: If somebody's on the ground, I mean somebody.
- 15:24Speaker 7: And honestly, that's you know, teams, I don't think it's
- 15:30Speaker 7: just not structured anymore where you can tackle people on
- 15:32Speaker 7: the ground. If you lose your three plus best players
- 15:36Speaker 7: because you tackle to the ground, you want to show
- 15:38Speaker 7: a tough viewer in team. Uh, you go from a
- 15:41Speaker 7: twelve win team to a seven win team pretty fast.
- 15:44Speaker 1: Hey, I'm not don't take this the wrong way. Why
- 15:48Speaker 1: because you don't, Because because.
- 15:49Speaker 5: You know ever you wind up for this pitch.
- 15:51Speaker 6: Well, I'm gonna use your own words against you. You
- 15:53Speaker 6: don't look at day over sixty. You've been doing this
- 15:56Speaker 6: for forty years now. But Jeff Way, I'm over sixty.
- 16:00Speaker 6: You look great. Correct me if I'm wrong. Though, there
- 16:02Speaker 6: used to be a lot more surprises in a training camp, right, Well,
- 16:06Speaker 6: this team isn't built for no, No, not not at all.
- 16:08Speaker 6: So so might the fact you have a you have
- 16:10Speaker 6: a head coach.
- 16:12Speaker 7: On the list of things he wants no surprise surprises
- 16:15Speaker 7: is way down at the bottom a hundred percent. Right
- 16:17Speaker 7: after questions from Leggy and Andy Lindall, more questions from Leggy, Yeah, no,
- 16:24Speaker 7: this is this team is built for Uh.
- 16:27Speaker 5: There's not a lot of room for new faces and
- 16:30Speaker 5: that's not built for surprise.
- 16:31Speaker 6: So that with your football mind in today's modern Broncos
- 16:34Speaker 6: training camp, do you look for I mean, do you
- 16:38Speaker 6: lower your expectations and then look for little things that
- 16:40Speaker 6: intrigue you, little surprises to kind of keep that football
- 16:43Speaker 6: brain stimulated.
- 16:45Speaker 7: Well that you know the spot where young guys are
- 16:48Speaker 7: gonna make the team As inside linebacker, I think you're
- 16:50Speaker 7: gonna see two backups who are young.
- 16:54Speaker 5: Oh, he's having a.
- 16:55Speaker 1: Good camp, my man Red Murdoch and Stranger.
- 16:58Speaker 7: I'm gonna be really surprised if he doesn't knock the
- 17:01Speaker 7: ball out in in the preseason, because that's just his
- 17:04Speaker 7: that's in his DNA apparently, because when I was looking
- 17:08Speaker 7: at him before the draft, I felt like, you know, now,
- 17:10Speaker 7: it's buffalo. You ever see a buffalo against a lot
- 17:13Speaker 7: of guys who aren't in the league. But it doesn't matter.
- 17:16Speaker 7: If you get the ball out, you get the ball out.
- 17:18Speaker 7: I don't care who you're playing. And I felt like
- 17:20Speaker 7: every third snap when I watched him, the ball was out.
- 17:24Speaker 7: So he does something. You know, he's got that little
- 17:28Speaker 7: thing whatever it is, that when he impacts people that
- 17:33Speaker 7: the ball comes out. And I think if he does
- 17:35Speaker 7: that once or twice, but he's been he's been moving
- 17:39Speaker 7: up steadily. I think you know, Ellinger took second team
- 17:42Speaker 7: ramps a quarterback.
- 17:44Speaker 1: I saw I saw fifty out here doing I mean
- 17:46Speaker 1: I saw him doing his.
- 17:47Speaker 5: He Murnoch's taking second team reps. So they're in the MA.
- 17:51Speaker 7: I think the back up inside linebackers, they want to
- 17:54Speaker 7: see somebody step.
- 17:56Speaker 1: Forward in that and then go to stand in the field.
- 17:59Speaker 5: They need a force.
- 18:00Speaker 7: Safety has got to find a way to get in
- 18:03Speaker 7: the mix. You know, Devin Key is gonna be the
- 18:05Speaker 7: third safety and he's one of their best special teams
- 18:07Speaker 7: in an All Pro Special Teams player last year, so
- 18:11Speaker 7: uh they but they need a fourth guy. Those are
- 18:13Speaker 7: the the things you're looking at. And you know, I
- 18:16Speaker 7: always I tell people don't pay attention to long passes
- 18:20Speaker 7: and seven on. So those don't mean anything. And I
- 18:23Speaker 7: know people go crazy and they love to see They
- 18:26Speaker 7: just want to see some action, you know. They don't
- 18:28Speaker 7: want to see guys going through individual drills working on technique.
- 18:31Speaker 7: You know, I get it, but uh, look at rotations.
- 18:35Speaker 7: You want to understand what's going on with the team.
- 18:37Speaker 7: Look at the parts of practice no one else pays
- 18:39Speaker 7: attention to. That's they're really showing you the rotations.
- 18:43Speaker 1: I saw that yesterday.
- 18:44Speaker 7: I'm like, you know, he sean poopoo the Ellinger snaps
- 18:51Speaker 7: after practice yesterday. But I will tell you those were
- 18:54Speaker 7: real second team snaps. Those weren't Hey, we're rotating guys,
- 18:59Speaker 7: so your day. Yeah, no, those were the real second
- 19:03Speaker 7: team snaps that he earned. Don't start down, yeah, don't
- 19:07Speaker 7: start counting.
- 19:09Speaker 1: Uh.
- 19:09Speaker 5: I wish I had a dollar for every time you have.
- 19:11Speaker 1: To be someplace? Can you can you hang on just
- 19:13Speaker 1: for a little bit more? Do you have to go
- 19:14Speaker 1: some I gotta go to practice? Do you stand over
- 19:17Speaker 1: there in the sun. He's on the field, yet you're
- 19:19Speaker 1: not even doing anything?
- 19:20Speaker 6: I got. I just doesn't count until I watch. Well,
- 19:22Speaker 6: you can't tempt my stay. You can't tempt my tummy
- 19:25Speaker 6: with the taste of nuts and honey when it comes
- 19:26Speaker 6: to that quarterback, because I well, thank you, appreciate crime.
- 19:31Speaker 6: Is that all it takes. Yeah, then I'm in. Yeah,
- 19:33Speaker 6: Rog will take us a break, but I uh, I got,
- 19:36Speaker 6: I got this thought about about what I saw out.
- 19:39Speaker 1: Of the former Texas quarterback.
- 19:40Speaker 5: Okay, don't go anywhere like.
- 19:42Speaker 4: I trust your thoughts more though, Legg he hangs on
- 19:44Speaker 4: with us on the other side of the break. It's

- 20:02Speaker 4: on Monday at six. Vics out so.
- 20:04Speaker 1: Lazy, the guys are so Jeff, can you believe these
- 20:06Speaker 1: kids are.
- 20:08Speaker 5: I take it personal, Bratt t Vic, I take it
- 20:11Speaker 5: no doubt.
- 20:11Speaker 4: That's Mark Mojer, that's Jeff. By the way, the people
- 20:14Speaker 4: on the text message because you did throw Leggie under
- 20:17Speaker 4: the bus with days saying that Leggie would be out
- 20:19Speaker 4: here and flops and I thought that was preposterous. Uh,
- 20:21Speaker 4: he has his pig, he's covered, and you still have.
- 20:24Speaker 5: Those things screaming.
- 20:25Speaker 6: I'm disgusting, professional professional, I've never seen, never seen somebody
- 20:32Speaker 6: that flops.
- 20:33Speaker 1: Who's the guy that moved. Who's the guy that moved
- 20:35Speaker 1: to Italy? What was his name? Guy from the post?
- 20:39Speaker 1: What was his name?
- 20:43Speaker 6: Yeah?
- 20:44Speaker 1: Hey, I'm glad you stayed. Though.
- 20:45Speaker 6: I appreciate your time very much. I know it's valuable,
- 20:47Speaker 6: but it beats. It beats, it beats standing on that
- 20:51Speaker 6: concrete slab.
- 20:52Speaker 5: That's my spot.
- 20:53Speaker 1: Okay, let's talk my spots.
- 20:56Speaker 5: Like halfway down in between the fields.
- 20:57Speaker 6: That's always he always picks a spot in it's his perimeter.
- 21:00Speaker 6: Everybody stays.
- 21:01Speaker 4: There's a piece of astro turf that he stands on
- 21:04Speaker 4: gets picked up every day.
- 21:05Speaker 7: I stand there and everybody gives me my little clearance
- 21:08Speaker 7: because I'm a paint in the painting loss in camp.
- 21:12Speaker 6: That's why you're so good. But let's talk about these
- 21:14Speaker 6: quarterbacks and I watch I first saw him. I went
- 21:18Speaker 6: out of the stupid Alamo Bowl in twenty twenty, right
- 21:20Speaker 6: or was it twenty twenty? I guess the way they
- 21:21Speaker 6: played the Buffs at twenty twenty h and so saw
- 21:26Speaker 6: Ellier there and he beat the snot out of the buffs,
- 21:28Speaker 6: and then the backup kid came in and so on
- 21:29Speaker 6: and so forth. So I followed him around a little bit.
- 21:32Speaker 6: But when I watch him in this camp, and now
- 21:34Speaker 6: he's twenty seven years old, he's more mature. He's been
- 21:36Speaker 6: around now.
- 21:37Speaker 1: Right, He's he's had a job in this league.
- 21:40Speaker 6: But when I hear Sean Payton talk about him, and
- 21:41Speaker 6: then I see what I see out there, it's not
- 21:44Speaker 6: a lie that Peyton likes what he sees out of
- 21:46Speaker 6: the guy and the ability to get out of the
- 21:48Speaker 6: pocket and do all these different things. And he to me,
- 21:50Speaker 6: he looks more like bo Knicks does than Jared Stoodam does.
- 21:54Speaker 6: I mean, if they play more of a similar style
- 21:57Speaker 6: of quarterback. How do you feel about it?
- 21:59Speaker 7: Well, I mean he you know, whatever the team says
- 22:03Speaker 7: in public that you know, this guy turned down an
- 22:07Speaker 7: active roster spot last year to stay here on the
- 22:10Speaker 7: practice squad, and then he re signed here in the
- 22:14Speaker 7: off season. So while Sean and everyone else can say
- 22:18Speaker 7: we didn't say anything to him, I am skeptical because
- 22:24Speaker 7: the information we have is that he was very intent
- 22:28Speaker 7: on staying here, and I think he believed.
- 22:31Speaker 1: Is that a hey, why don't you stick around?
- 22:33Speaker 4: No?
- 22:33Speaker 7: I mean, I think they have made it very clear
- 22:36Speaker 7: that they like him, and he thinks enough, and I
- 22:40Speaker 7: you know, he's you know, Boa is the absolute unquestioned starter.
- 22:46Speaker 7: But if you're taking most consistent play at quarterback in camp, granted,
- 22:53Speaker 7: he spent threes on threes most of the time, and
- 22:57Speaker 7: he should dominate that. Ellinger, he should dominate threes on
- 23:01Speaker 7: threes and he has and you know, yesterday moved up
- 23:04Speaker 7: to the twos. And I think there's a good chance
- 23:07Speaker 7: he's the backup quarterback when the season starts. And uh,
- 23:12Speaker 7: you know, one of the hints Seawan offered was the
- 23:16Speaker 7: ball moves, which means, in Shawn's world, Ellinger gets completions
- 23:22Speaker 7: in practice, doesn't waste downs, doesn't chuck it down the field,
- 23:25Speaker 7: doesn't throw it away, gets completions.
- 23:28Speaker 5: The ball moves. That's what he's stopped about, right, The
- 23:30Speaker 5: ball's moving, and it has And.
- 23:33Speaker 7: You know, I think he's made the most of every
- 23:35Speaker 7: snap he's I don't think he's had I'm not sure
- 23:39Speaker 7: I've chartered a bad throw from him.
- 23:40Speaker 1: Yet. That's good.
- 23:41Speaker 4: There wasn't a ball in the ground yesterday from him
- 23:44Speaker 4: with the red again.
- 23:45Speaker 7: He's doing what Peyton Manning always used to tell young
- 23:47Speaker 7: quarterbacks when I would watch Peyton talk to you, get completions.
- 23:52Speaker 7: You know, it's all well and good to fire it
- 23:54Speaker 7: downfield after your first read, but get completions, and you
- 23:59Speaker 7: know he Ellinger has done that. That's a veteran.
- 24:03Speaker 5: That's the kind of guy you want it back up.
- 24:05Speaker 1: Isn't it.
- 24:05Speaker 4: It's funny you think of Sam Ellinger as like a
- 24:08Speaker 4: twenty three year old eight.
- 24:12Speaker 1: No offense to Jared Stidham's twenty nine and Jared. You know,
- 24:16Speaker 1: Sean loves Hi.
- 24:17Speaker 3: That's why this whole time, Jared has made a living
- 24:20Speaker 3: off tearing up a preseason game to make that the
- 24:25Speaker 3: video they look at when they're when they're trying to
- 24:27Speaker 3: make decisions.
- 24:28Speaker 5: But uh, he's got a he's got a fight on
- 24:31Speaker 5: his hands.
- 24:32Speaker 1: You know.
- 24:32Speaker 7: This year, I think Ellinger's come here ready to ready
- 24:35Speaker 7: to rock. I mean it's and I think they'll still
- 24:37Speaker 7: keep three. I'm I'm still in the mode where I'll
- 24:41Speaker 7: be surprised if they don't keep all three. But Stidham
- 24:45Speaker 7: does have a very very big cap figure. It's one
- 24:47Speaker 7: of the biggest on offense outside of the offensive lineman.
- 24:51Speaker 4: If they caught him, it'd be like a three and
- 24:52Speaker 4: a half million dollars.
- 24:57Speaker 1: Him.
- 24:57Speaker 7: Well, that's they don't need that room right now. They're
- 24:59Speaker 7: they're pretty good. But I'm just saying that's that's a
- 25:03Speaker 7: pretty big cap figure.
- 25:04Speaker 6: If the guy is the number three, that's that's just
- 25:06Speaker 6: interesting to me.
- 25:07Speaker 7: And again I this is but again, he's made a
- 25:11Speaker 7: living out of for sure, throwing for two eighty and
- 25:14Speaker 7: a half.
- 25:15Speaker 6: You know, yeah in the preseason, but this is modern
- 25:17Speaker 6: NFL man, and you just you can't be sentimental. And
- 25:21Speaker 6: if you need, like you said, if you need that
- 25:23Speaker 6: five mil, you need that five mil. And it maybe
- 25:26Speaker 6: one guy's not better than the other guy, but but
- 25:28Speaker 6: you're gonna be able to save that. Bred mean, we're
- 25:29Speaker 6: talking about the backup quarterback anyway. But I just I
- 25:32Speaker 6: that's one of the things. I guess where I'm looking deeper,
- 25:35Speaker 6: if I can to find something interesting to talk about
- 25:37Speaker 6: rather than guys.
- 25:38Speaker 1: Running around in the front and underwear.
- 25:39Speaker 4: The backup quarterback mattered last year in the most important time.
- 25:43Speaker 1: Of that's true. That's true.
- 25:44Speaker 7: It always matters this day and age. It's rare for
- 25:47Speaker 7: a guy to run the table anymore. Front to back
- 25:50Speaker 7: is too hard, too hard to survive, too hard to
- 25:53Speaker 7: stay upright.
- 25:54Speaker 4: Speaking of the starter, what have you seen out of
- 25:56Speaker 4: bow Nicks in terms of progression from year two to
- 25:59Speaker 4: year three? How do you think the ankle looks. It's
- 26:01Speaker 4: very clear. Like on the short side of the practice
- 26:04Speaker 4: field on UH on team run yesterday, he was doing
- 26:08Speaker 4: little like ten yard sprints by himself. He's he's testing
- 26:11Speaker 4: it out.
- 26:11Speaker 5: He no, he still has a rehab process. He's going
- 26:15Speaker 5: through that.
- 26:15Speaker 7: You can see there's a trainer right next to him
- 26:17Speaker 7: when he's doing that, So they're they're gauging his stride
- 26:21Speaker 7: and making sure he's not compensating. And because that's how
- 26:25Speaker 7: you injury your other leg is when you're coming back
- 26:27Speaker 7: from an injury and you you're not running you know balanced,
- 26:33Speaker 7: you know, you're leaning on one side or the other.
- 26:35Speaker 7: So that's that's what they're checking. They're making sure he's
- 26:38Speaker 7: maintaining his his recovery. Uh, he's looked good. You know,
- 26:43Speaker 7: I think I think he has a good relationship with
- 26:45Speaker 7: Davis Webb. You know, we haven't seen all of the things,
- 26:49Speaker 7: you know, the stuff they do in the night walkthroughs.
- 26:52Speaker 7: Is the real offensive tweets. We haven't seen many of them.
- 26:56Speaker 7: I've seen a few that I've noticed. Uh, but the
- 27:00Speaker 7: bulk of the real tweaks, the new stuff is they're
- 27:04Speaker 7: putting that in and we'll see, we'll see.
- 27:06Speaker 1: Yeah, we'll see in September.
- 27:08Speaker 5: Yeah, that's that they keep that under the under the hood.
- 27:11Speaker 6: Or read all your stuff of course all the time.
- 27:13Speaker 6: Can't get can't get through the week without getting my
- 27:15Speaker 6: leg walled fixed. Uh, he's thirty six years old. He's
- 27:20Speaker 6: just hanging out out there right now, coming off injury.
- 27:23Speaker 6: What's the story with Hill? What is the story with
- 27:25Speaker 6: Taysom Hill? And if if two can move to the
- 27:28Speaker 6: number two spotted quarterback, is it possible this guy could
- 27:31Speaker 6: be an emergency three and actually still help a football
- 27:34Speaker 6: team at the age of thirty six?
- 27:35Speaker 5: You know, very limited last year, right, you know?
- 27:38Speaker 7: He had you know, I think one hundred yards receiving
- 27:42Speaker 7: a smattering of carrious and I think he threw one
- 27:45Speaker 7: touchdown pass last year, and he missed some games. He
- 27:49Speaker 7: started the year on pup because of a knee injury
- 27:51Speaker 7: from the year before twenty three?
- 27:54Speaker 1: Uh, is this just silly talker?
- 27:56Speaker 7: Is no I mean, you can never dismiss guys who
- 27:59Speaker 7: played for on in New Orleans because that that once
- 28:02Speaker 7: you're one of his guys.
- 28:03Speaker 5: I mean we've seen it on this team.
- 28:04Speaker 7: Hell if Troutman's one of his guys, Little Jordan Humphreys
- 28:09Speaker 7: one of his guys. I mean, if you, if you
- 28:11Speaker 7: have shown him certain things, he will he will. Now
- 28:17Speaker 7: you know, thirty six is a different age. He's got
- 28:21Speaker 7: a lot of wear and tear. Taysom Hill does. But
- 28:24Speaker 7: uh Shawn's leaving tomorrow night for Canton to be part
- 28:30Speaker 7: of Drew Brees's enshrinement ceremony festivities, and Taysom Hill and
- 28:37Speaker 7: a lot of other former Saints are going to be there.
- 28:39Speaker 7: So Seawan is going to talk to Taysom Hill there
- 28:42Speaker 7: and he'll first try to gauge are even interested in playing.
- 28:47Speaker 7: The one advantage that Broncos have is their team physician
- 28:51Speaker 7: did the surgery for Taysom Hill and twenty twenty three,
- 28:54Speaker 7: so they are twenty twenty four rather, so they know
- 28:59Speaker 7: what his recovery's cause he's Taysom Hill has been here
- 29:01Speaker 7: in Denver for follow up visits with uh.
- 29:05Speaker 6: Probably Jackson shots him with his former coach that says,
- 29:07Speaker 6: hi and all that kind of thing.
- 29:09Speaker 7: I mean, he's he's been here to visit their team physician,
- 29:12Speaker 7: Okay for the follow ups, so they know how his
- 29:14Speaker 7: recovery's going. They know all that.
- 29:16Speaker 1: No hippuck, no hippa there for everybody.
- 29:20Speaker 4: When it comes to Sean Payton, Guys, he's got WILLI
- 29:23Speaker 4: Snead out here working with the wide receivers. Have you
- 29:26Speaker 4: spoken to the coaching staff to Snead or any of
- 29:28Speaker 4: the wide outs about his impact in camp thus far.
- 29:32Speaker 7: He's just starting his coaching career, so I think he's
- 29:35Speaker 7: probably h in a lot more of an analytical type
- 29:39Speaker 7: data going through the film, practice film and all those things.
- 29:43Speaker 7: So but you know he you know, any player who
- 29:46Speaker 7: can offer perspective on this route in this playbook, these
- 29:51Speaker 7: are the decisions you need to make, that's always gonna help.
- 29:56Speaker 5: So he can offer perspective there.
- 29:58Speaker 7: But when guys are just getting going in their coaching career,
- 30:01Speaker 7: it's it's a lot coming at him in there.
- 30:03Speaker 4: In the first camp, Sean says, nothing to see here
- 30:06Speaker 4: for Jalen Wattle, who right here on about the fifteen
- 30:09Speaker 4: yard line pulled off of a ball that was overthrown.
- 30:12Speaker 4: He said like two words to somebody with a water
- 30:14Speaker 4: bottle and then walked off the field. Didn't say anything
- 30:17Speaker 4: to anybody else. Uh, Sean said, is don't be concerned.
- 30:20Speaker 4: We think it's a muscle issue. But he always says
- 30:23Speaker 4: that how concerned would you? Guy could have a meteor
- 30:25Speaker 4: hit him in I was gonna saying he'd be a
- 30:27Speaker 4: great hockey coach.
- 30:29Speaker 7: Yeah, yeah, doesn't want to give anything there polished when
- 30:32Speaker 7: I was covering hockey or I would help in the playoffs.
- 30:35Speaker 7: I've never not covered football, but when I would help
- 30:38Speaker 7: in the playoffs, my theory always was that, uh, whenever
- 30:42Speaker 7: they discussed injuries in the playoffs, he went diagonal, Like
- 30:46Speaker 7: if they said it's right upper body, it was the
- 30:49Speaker 7: left lay that. I always went diagonal, and you know
- 30:53Speaker 7: about seventy percent of the time it turned out to
- 30:55Speaker 7: be right.
- 30:55Speaker 1: Are right about that?
- 30:57Speaker 5: So you use that later, I will just go diagonal.
- 31:00Speaker 5: I think you're gonna be saying.
- 31:01Speaker 6: Full leg balled full credit. I was telling Ross this
- 31:03Speaker 6: morning early. I'm like, let's see, you've got a third
- 31:05Speaker 6: string linebacker and you say, coach, what about Smith? You know,
- 31:09Speaker 6: I you know he's being valued. What he's gonna be fine. Yeah,
- 31:12Speaker 6: but but coach his leg from the knee down is
- 31:14Speaker 6: in the end zone and he's over on the forty
- 31:16Speaker 6: and they had to put his leg on a gator
- 31:17Speaker 6: and take it to the table. He'll be fine, it's
- 31:19Speaker 6: a wrist.
- 31:20Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 31:21Speaker 7: The all timer was when Josh was here, McDaniels was here,
- 31:25Speaker 7: and he tried to break the rules and institute upper
- 31:29Speaker 7: body lower body designation for injuries.
- 31:32Speaker 5: You can't do that. The league has a.
- 31:33Speaker 7: Very specific policy about injuries because they don't want the
- 31:36Speaker 7: gambling to to may affect right. But so they're in
- 31:41Speaker 7: a game at the stadium, Orton gets his hands smashed.
- 31:46Speaker 7: It's bleeding, and they tell us in the press box
- 31:51Speaker 7: upper body injury, and that the next second Orton is
- 31:56Speaker 7: standing behind the bench holding his hand up in the
- 31:59Speaker 7: lunch thrown him down his arm at the second they
- 32:03Speaker 7: said upper body injury or in the standard like showing
- 32:07Speaker 7: the coaches in the press box that like the other
- 32:11Speaker 7: coaches were up in the box. Oh my god, he's
- 32:13Speaker 7: showing them that blood's running down his arm. So it's
- 32:16Speaker 7: the funniest thing. That was the last time they did
- 32:18Speaker 7: upper upper and upper more body. Well in the NHL,
- 32:20Speaker 7: you still get away with it. Yeah, go diagonal, don't diagonal.
- 32:25Speaker 7: I did it minor league. Even John ben Boxmere accused
- 32:28Speaker 7: me of of being in the training room when I
- 32:31Speaker 7: did it to him, and uh.
- 32:33Speaker 1: How do you know?
- 32:34Speaker 5: How do you know this Rochester America?
- 32:36Speaker 1: These things?
- 32:37Speaker 5: He said upper body. I said, so it's his ankle
- 32:40Speaker 5: and he looked at the double tape.
- 32:43Speaker 1: That's awesome.
- 32:45Speaker 4: Thanks for hanging out with us for a couple of segments. Man,
- 32:47Speaker 4: that's Jeff Lewald of ESPN. To get out of here,
- 32:50Speaker 4: go to your hovel.
- 32:51Speaker 5: This is this is a terrible spot. I can't function.
- 32:54Speaker 1: Yeah, but we have shaded.
- 32:55Speaker 7: I mean, I cannot function. I gotta go get my hat.
- 33:00Speaker 7: Court was like, I'm taking a lot of heat for
- 33:02Speaker 7: my vintage Super Bowl hats.
- 33:04Speaker 1: Are you really?
- 33:04Speaker 5: Yeah, that's a lot of old man jokes.
- 33:06Speaker 1: That's that's that's all. Good man. Amen you to yesteryear.
- 33:09Speaker 5: The people that people telling you what grade they were
- 33:11Speaker 5: in and all that.
- 33:12Speaker 1: I don't need that that was in the third grade
- 33:14Speaker 1: when that happened.
- 33:14Speaker 5: I haven't even born when you got that hat.
- 33:16Speaker 1: Good good for you.
