- 0:23Speaker 1: Hey guys, welcome back to Music's Lost History, the artist edition.
- 0:27Speaker 1: First and foremost, there is so much more to this
- 0:29Speaker 1: man than the famous song that brought him to the dance.
- 0:32Speaker 1: Did you know that he's the one that gets credit
- 0:34Speaker 1: for making Seattle, Washington a legitimate hip-hop city? This was
- 0:38Speaker 1: long before grunge even took over the Pacific Northwest. His
- 0:41Speaker 1: real name is Anthony, a DJ associated with Seattle's party
- 0:45Speaker 1: scene in the 1980s. Anthony is one of very few
- 0:49Speaker 1: people who truly came into the scene of mixing music
- 0:53Speaker 1: that didn't come from New York or Los Angeles. Now, openly,
- 0:56Speaker 1: he admits... that Seattle had no hip-hop scene until he
- 1:01Speaker 1: created his own record label. It was Anthony's way of
- 1:04Speaker 1: living up to his own word. He wasn't going to
- 1:07Speaker 1: wait for a label to approach him, so he created
- 1:10Speaker 1: his own. His first release came in the form of
- 1:13Speaker 1: a tune called Posse on Broadway. That was in 1987.
- 1:15Speaker 1: It was written about Seattle's true neighbors. And get this,
- 1:20Speaker 1: the state government right there in Washington, they called him
- 1:24Speaker 1: a pioneer of music. Hey, coming up next, the man
- 1:43Speaker 1: credited for this pioneer of music releases a song that
- 1:48Speaker 1: was banned from MTV. Aero Collins! Music's lost history! Name
- 1:58Speaker 1: the artist behind... Hey, thanks for coming back to Music's
- 2:06Speaker 1: Lost History, the Artist Edition. The man we're talking about
- 2:09Speaker 1: this time around is credited for putting hip-hop in the
- 2:12Speaker 1: same city as the Space Needle. His biggest hit was
- 2:15Speaker 1: a game-changer. It hit the globe really hard in 1992.
- 2:21Speaker 1: It gave him an opportunity to win a Grammy Award
- 2:23Speaker 1: for Best Rap Solo Performance. The song was not a joke.
- 2:28Speaker 1: It wasn't making fun of a woman's body. His goal
- 2:31Speaker 1: was to celebrate the entire body that wasn't being fully
- 2:36Speaker 1: loved by mainstream culture. MTV, though, well, they took the
- 2:40Speaker 1: song and they said, you got to go. You're going
- 2:42Speaker 1: to be banned. Yeah, it's sexual content is pretty much
- 2:46Speaker 1: in your face. It's actually seen as one of music's
- 2:50Speaker 1: biggest mistakes. The controversy became the unexpected promotion by way
- 2:55Speaker 1: of turning the MTV band song into a must see video.
- 2:59Speaker 1: You got to keep in mind this was 1992. The
- 3:01Speaker 1: Internet was not what it is today. We didn't have
- 3:04Speaker 1: YouTube doing everything for us. He's been named one of
- 3:07Speaker 1: the culturally recognizable artists of our time. And it's very
- 3:11Speaker 1: important to understand that he was a crossover artist because
- 3:14Speaker 1: that song in the early part of the 1990s went
- 3:17Speaker 1: on to the top 40 scene and really made its
- 3:20Speaker 1: impact there and on wedding day dance floor. The song
- 3:27Speaker 1: we're talking about is Baby Got Back from the legendary
- 3:31Speaker 1: Sir Mix-A-Lot. That's Music's Lost History, the Artist Edition. I'm Arrow.
