Latest / Kenny Wallace Media / The Passing Of The Great Kyle Busch | Charlie Marlow Show
Transcript
- 0:00Hey everybody, Charlie Marlow here.
- 0:02Obviously super sad day in the NASCAR world, the racing world,
- 0:06the sports world, just the world with the passing yesterday on
- 0:10Thursday of a true icon, Kyle Busch at the age of 41.
- 0:15Now remember a couple weeks ago, Watkins Glen, he asked for a
- 0:18doctor after the race, said after the fact that he was
- 0:21having a bunch of coughing issues.
- 0:23But then last week racing at Dover, he won the truck race on
- 0:28Friday. And I watched that, that whole
- 0:31press conference and it was, it was classic Kyle Busch.
- 0:35It's, it's so sad right now, but the fact that he won his last
- 0:40weekend and he was having a lot of fun in that press conference.
- 0:44He was joking around. I know he said you never know
- 0:47when you're going to get your last win.
- 0:49And unfortunately that was his, his last win.
- 0:52It was his 69th truck win and he he had some fun per usual and
- 0:57joked around about 69. He had everybody laughing in the
- 1:02in the press room there. But just the fact that the
- 1:06pictures and videos coming out from the last couple days for me
- 1:11as a guy who's basically right around Kyle Busch's age, I'll be
- 1:1444 next week. But I also have two kids, a boy
- 1:18and a girl. Not the same order.
- 1:20I know Braxton, I believe turned 11 very recently.
- 1:24What a couple couple three days ago, you saw the pictures of
- 1:27Kyle Busch celebrating Braxton's 11th birthday and smiling as a
- 1:32family. And then his daughter, I believe
- 1:36is 4 just turned 4. So I mean, I have AI have an 8
- 1:39year old daughter and a son that's about to be 5.
- 1:43And we'll, we'll talk about all the racing aspects of that.
- 1:46But man. And, and whether you loved Kyle
- 1:49Busch, hated him as a race or you respected him and he played
- 1:53that villain role so well, especially earlier early in his
- 1:56career. But on a human level, you just
- 2:00think about the dad and the husband to Samantha and the fact
- 2:07that you have these two beautiful young kids.
- 2:10We all know about Braxton and hopefully he becomes an amazing,
- 2:14amazing race. He already is at 11 years old.
- 2:18But you just think about the loss from a family standpoint,
- 2:22on a human level of his family. It's just it it, it again really
- 2:26hits me as a guy who's about the same age as Kyle Busch, also
- 2:30with, with two kids, a boy and a girl.
- 2:33And, and, and I'll get back to that.
- 2:35That's that's the most important part.
- 2:38But just such a loss also in the racing community in NASCAR, he
- 2:42was a larger than life personality.
- 2:45He was so talented, so good. I mean, they changed the rules,
- 2:49multiple rules about what, how young you could race and how
- 2:53many races you could do and what is now the O'Reilly Series and
- 2:56the Truck Series because he won frickin everything.
- 3:00So I said what, 69 Truck wins? I think 102, don't quote me, 102
- 3:06or so O'Reilly wins. And what was he?
- 3:08What was he at Cup? Was it, was it 60, 60 something?
- 3:11And that's with on the Cup level not having great success the
- 3:16last several years. And that's why there was so much
- 3:19frustration with with Kyle the last couple years with RCR and
- 3:23the cars not not running great even at the tail end of his JGR
- 3:27days. That's why I think it was so
- 3:29cool that he was able to win his last weekend, even though it was
- 3:34a truck race. And you can remember the last
- 3:36time, the last weekend you saw Kyle Busch, he won in the
- 3:40trucks. And for me, for me, I mean, I
- 3:43feel very blessed I was able to to be at his last Cup win, which
- 3:48was was here in Saint Louis. It was what, 2023?
- 3:53That was the second year of the Cup race in Saint Louis.
- 3:56And he won three races that year with RCR with his first year.
- 4:01That was his first year and his last Cup win was here in Saint
- 4:04Louis, Madison, Illinois, across the river Illinois, but the
- 4:08Worldwide Technology Raceway with the Enjoy Illinois 300 and
- 4:15you know, just a, just a couple couple stories.
- 4:18I always tell people like I'm relatively new to the NASCAR
- 4:21world. I've really been covering NASCAR
- 4:23with Kenny Nonstop the last five seasons, really 4 1/2 years.
- 4:28But I covered a lot of NASCAR when I when I worked in Michigan
- 4:32in Lansing in 2006, 2007, and at the time they had two Cup races.
- 4:37So we covered all the races at Michigan International Speedway.
- 4:41And so Kyle's just starting to be a superstar there.
- 4:45I think his first Cup win was 2005.
- 4:46But I remember we were all interviewing Kyle Busch back
- 4:50then. It was either O6O7.
- 4:51I know he became a fan at the time.
- 4:53I don't know if he still continued to be, but I remember
- 4:56him saying he had become a fan of Michigan football, University
- 5:00of Michigan. He had went and visited practice
- 5:02and that was Michigan. That was when they had and Mike
- 5:04Hart and Mario Manningham and Chad Henney, O6 or O7 it was.
- 5:10And that's, that's just what I remember from talking to him
- 5:13back then. And he's just kind of coming up
- 5:15because that was, if it was O 6, he'd have been what he'd have
- 5:19been in like 20. He died at 41.
- 5:22So he'd have been about 21 years old.
- 5:25And then I got to do a a Zoom interview with Kyle in 2024
- 5:33because he was doing interviews for for Saint Louis Media
- 5:37because he had won the race the year before at Worldwide
- 5:40Technology Raceway. It just happened to be that that
- 5:43interview took place right after the fight with Ricky Stenhouse
- 5:48Junior. So we talked about Saint Louis,
- 5:50we talked about his season, but we really got into that that
- 5:52fight, which was what at North Wilkesboro.
- 5:55So this was 2024. And again, that was just like a
- 5:581012 minute Zoom interview, but I remember talking to him then.
- 6:02And then also, I believe it was last year or the year before
- 6:07where he got wrecked out in Saint Louis as well.
- 6:12And we talked with him at the we're outside the Media Center
- 6:16when he had been cleared from the infield care center.
- 6:20So I mean, we talked about his family, the most important
- 6:23thing. I mean, his legacy.
- 6:26People know way, way more than me about about that.
- 6:28But it's just obviously amazing. One of the most talented racers
- 6:33of all time. I mean, all the wins that I
- 6:35mentioned speak for themselves and or speak for itself.
- 6:41And yesterday. So when I saw the news, when I
- 6:44saw the news on Twitter and then I was texting with Kenny Wallace
- 6:47about something else. And I, I won't, I won't share
- 6:51all of this, but obviously I think you guys all know the, the
- 6:54NASCAR community is so close, especially in Charlotte and, and
- 6:57Kenny's there right now. But everybody knowing each other
- 7:00and their kids know each other and their families and they go
- 7:02to school together and the shops are relatively close.
- 7:04And Kenny had texted me yesterday basically saying that
- 7:09it's looking really bad. It's looking really bad for Kyle
- 7:11Busch. That was earlier in the day and
- 7:13then randomly I was I was going to dinner and to see a show.
- 7:18I don't ever go see musicals, but with my father-in-law and
- 7:23his wife and, and we were going to see MJ, the Michael Jackson
- 7:27musical. And as I'm driving to dinner, I
- 7:31see on on X the NASCAR official post that Kyle Busch has has
- 7:37died at the age of 41. And it was so weird.
- 7:40I mean, it's just so shocking. I know we had Greg Biffle last
- 7:45year and he was retired in a different fashion in the plane
- 7:49crash. But I mean, during the season
- 7:51and a guy who's so young and it happened so suddenly.
- 7:56I know he was he was feeling some sickness a couple weeks
- 7:59ago. But to go to that, from that to,
- 8:02to dying in in less than two weeks.
- 8:05And you saw the pictures of, of him with the Andretti's at the
- 8:10go Kart spot and you saw the picture of him at his son
- 8:12Braxton's birthday party. And I, I saw a report that he
- 8:18basically was in the simulator and he just kind of was
- 8:21unresponsive. And, and we'll know, we'll know
- 8:23more. There's no reason to jump to
- 8:24conclusions. And I think people know some
- 8:28things of what's happened, but they're waiting for the official
- 8:31announcements and, and statements because right now,
- 8:35what's most important, you know, whoever announces that, whether
- 8:37it's a hospital, doctors, the family, I mean, we'll, we'll
- 8:40find out exactly what happened. But it's just so, so tragic.
- 8:45And you just so again, last night, I'm out to dinner with my
- 8:50family. We're watching this MJ the
- 8:52musical. But really all I could think
- 8:54about, like you go into the bathroom, you're looking at your
- 8:57phone intermission, you're looking at your phone.
- 8:59Like all, all you can really do is just go through all the
- 9:01tributes on social media and the pictures and the videos of Kyle
- 9:06Busch. It's just so shocking.
- 9:08I got a buddy here who's a huge Kyle Busch fan.
- 9:10His son loves Kyle Busch and he and I are texting and he's just
- 9:14like, I can't even believe this. I can't believe this is
- 9:16happening. And so there's so many layers to
- 9:19this and another thing. And I won't even, I won't even
- 9:21be able to get to all the things I was thinking of saying.
- 9:24I didn't make notes or anything. But Kyle Busch was such a
- 9:28personality in NASCAR also, which NASCAR is so lacking.
- 9:33In the last several years, we've talked about this a lot.
- 9:36I always say that like Denny Hamlin is the straw that stirs
- 9:38the drink and Kyle Busch is number 2.
- 9:41What was #2 and that's without even running good the last three
- 9:45years or so. But the fact that he played that
- 9:48villain role so well early on. And you need, you need the
- 9:53heroes, you need the villains. He was, he was so good.
- 9:57And then he gets married, he has kids, he's, he's more likable.
- 10:02And I'm telling you, the first year that I really covered
- 10:04NASCAR first season was 2022. And that's where the biggest
- 10:09storyline the whole year was his free agency last year at JGR and
- 10:14obviously he went to Richard Childress Racing.
- 10:16That was the biggest storyline for the whole year in NASCAR.
- 10:20And I'm telling you, so that year, the next year, he starts
- 10:24winning with RCR and so he goes to Chevy.
- 10:28And I'm telling you because I monitor all these comment
- 10:30sections, whether it's YouTube, podcasts, a lot of the social
- 10:33media, I can't tell you how many people because Kyle Busch in the
- 10:38in the Media Center 2022-2023, he was the show.
- 10:42He was the show. He was funny, he was
- 10:44interesting, not afraid, obviously to to say things to,
- 10:49to go against whether it was NASCAR or what's going on with
- 10:52the Next Gen. car. He was interesting and you need
- 10:56that. And NASCAR lacks the star power
- 10:59and people who are not afraid to rattle the cage and and say
- 11:03interesting things. And I'm telling you again, I
- 11:06can't tell you how many people in the comment section said I
- 11:10used to hate Kyle Busch, Man, I'm starting to like him.
- 11:13And I don't think it was just I don't think it was just going
- 11:16from Toyota to Chevy, but it was more like, man, I used to hate
- 11:18him. He used to be this cocky kid,
- 11:21you know, now he's in his late 30s, early 40s.
- 11:23He's funny, he gets it. I saw so many comments the last
- 11:29two 3-4 going back what, 5 NASCAR seasons back to 2022 and
- 11:34I really started being in this world and I'm not in this world
- 11:37nearly as all these other people.
- 11:39I'm not trying to pretend, but I but I saw so many comments that
- 11:43people like, man, I used to hate Kyle Busch and now I'm really
- 11:46starting to like him. He's really starting to come
- 11:48around. He's saying the right things.
- 11:50He's speaking for us, he's speaking for the fans.
- 11:53I remember there was this one clip we cut and it got over
- 11:561,000,000 views. And it was Kyle Busch talking
- 11:58about where NASCAR had kind of lost their way with, with the
- 12:03stars of the Earnhardt days, the Rusty Wallace's, the Jeff
- 12:06Gordon's, the Mark Martins, and how how NASCAR wasn't able to
- 12:09take those fans of those drivers when they retired or
- 12:13unfortunately passed away and turn them into drivers of of the
- 12:16new era. And it was just so right on.
- 12:19I mean, Kyle Busch, one of those guys that like everything he
- 12:22said, even if you didn't 100% agree with it, like you
- 12:25respected it and usually it was coming from the right place of
- 12:28competition and NASCAR and what's best for the sport.
- 12:32So I think I've said about everything.
- 12:35I mean, you can't. I mean, you could talk forever
- 12:37about this, but I think we've covered all the bases.
- 12:40Just a true absolute legend Hall of Famer, obviously, I mean one
- 12:46of the icons of the sport. And then man like to watch him
- 12:51as a family man. I'm repeating myself, but again,
- 12:54as a dude my my age, basically I'll be 44 next week with a boy
- 12:57and a girl and just seeing all those pictures, videos him, him
- 13:02dancing with his daughter. That's another thing.
- 13:04You can be a big tough guy, a villain, you can be a NASCAR bad
- 13:08boy. But when you have that daughter,
- 13:09man, it doesn't matter. They'll make you put on the
- 13:12stupid hat, the silly hat or dress and dance with them and
- 13:15they can take the toughest dudes in the world, the best racers in
- 13:18the world and and have them melt.
- 13:20That's what the daughters do to us.
- 13:23And then obviously Braxton, we'll see what happens with
- 13:26Braxton's future. I mean, he seems like he's super
- 13:29talented. You don't want to put too much
- 13:30pressure on him, but there's a kid who obviously can carry on
- 13:34the amazing Bush family legacy if if he so chooses.
- 13:37This is such a blow, obviously to him and his family, but he's
- 13:41got all the talent in the world. No longer unfortunately, has his
- 13:44mentor. But you got Kurt.
- 13:46You got, I mean, you'll have the whole NASCAR community wrapping
- 13:50his arms around Braxton and the whole family moving forward.
- 13:52So here you go. Yeah, respond with your
- 13:57comments. Let me know your your feelings
- 13:59and thoughts on this horrible, horrible day.
- 14:02And it'll be interesting to see the Coke 600.
- 14:06I mean, they'll be obviously tributes all all weekend long,
- 14:09as there should to to the great cow Bush.
- 14:12So that's all I got to say. Just a terrible, shocking couple
- 14:18of days. And it's going to take a long
- 14:20time, I think, for this to really set in that the man is
- 14:23gone because it was so sudden. And he was, I mean, hell, he won
- 14:27a race. He won a NASCAR Trucksters race
- 14:30just last Friday, one week ago today.
- 14:33All right, have a great Memorial Day weekend, everybody.
