- Jaba: Hello everybody, welcome back to the Scout and the Speculator podcast. This is Will Jarvis, also known as Jabba Cards, joined by my co-host, Jeremy Brown of Perfect Game Baseball, more importantly known as JGB, underscore cards underscore. And ⁓ this is our second edition today here of ⁓ Buy Sell Hold for the new Bowman Chrome release. We're now a day short of being three weeks out. We've seen prices kinda settle. We'll have a few more episodes in the coming days on, you know, kind of just price check-ins and comprehensive ⁓ thoughts on where, you know, all the notable guys stand. ⁓ but for today we're just gonna do a fairly brief buy-sell hold analysis. We got three guys and ⁓ you know, they're all guys you know, that are pretty notable for various reasons. ⁓ underscore_underscore_: Yeah. Jaba: Jeremy, you wanna take the bye? 'Cause this is ⁓ this is your boy here. underscore_underscore_: This was my buy that I I needed to make sure I got enough of before we tried to blow him up a little bit. ⁓ Andre Hidalgo, left-handed pitcher from the Baltimore Orioles, six foot four, hundred and ninety-four pounds, seventeen and a half years old. ⁓ like wait, why why are you buying him, right? Well, he's seventeen, he's throwing ninety nine, and he's got a plus slider. ⁓ then as we've said more than once. Go ahead and put that in high school, and you're talking about a 1-1 pick. Now, why aren't we talking about a more because he had five and a third innings, like 85 total pro pitches. He struck out two inning. He also had a walk per inning. So there's really just simply not enough to go off of to like go all all in if you're somebody. But also, I got a true gold for like a buck twenty-five. Like you're not. Jaba: Yeah. underscore_underscore_: His base auto or his blues are like forty, fifty, sixty bucks. He's not a stretch to go grab some of, especially as the color true color starts to dry up. and it's just very reminiscent of Sad BL Delzine last year. I was buying Delzine. I think I sent you a photo of like a true blue I bought for twenty bucks shipped off ebay. Now it's a hundred and fifty, hundred and sixty dollar card. I thought he should have been on the same at least in the same breadth as Kevin DeFranc. ⁓ maybe not quite a Kendrick Churio level, but also not all that far off in terms of prospect. And he showed it this year from the complex to A ball has kind of dominated all throughout. but yeah, ⁓ a lot of the same factors as to why I was buying Sad Biel are why I'm buying Andre Hidalgo and you can go buy bin base autos for like six bucks with PW PWE shipping. So like why wouldn't you? Jaba: Yeah. underscore_underscore_: It's an easy cheap dart throw. I I've bought I paid up for my true blues just because I wanted some early. ⁓ those are gonna keep falling down. I got a true gold, like I said, for one twenty five. ⁓ I mean, we missed out on his gold ink, but that only did what, like four fifty like max. So There's definitely some good stuff there to be had. So Andre Hidalgo is a buy. Jaba: Something like that. Yeah. Yeah, and it's it's definitely a you know, longer term play, like you said, you know, his color prices might actually come down before they go up, but you know, you're not buying it to flip it in three months, you're buying it for when he turns into Sad Bell Delzine. And, you know, I'm glad you mentioned that because I was gonna say, ⁓ for people listening, you know, when you talk about these guys, you know, you you were all over Delzine last year and when you talk about it it's really the same same reasons here on Hidalgo. underscore_underscore_: Yeah. Jaba: So that has worked for you in the past. Obviously it'll come down to his performance, but it's really a similar archetype there, and there's kinda no reason, you know, to avoid him at that price point. ⁓ going into our hold here, we got Anjou Gomez. underscore_underscore_: No no. Jaba: of the Royals. We just recorded ⁓ an episode talking about how he's playing in the D SL now, which is pretty ⁓ I don't know if I should say historic, but maybe unprecedented. you know, you you don't see D S L guys playing in the AFL. It's a lot of pitchers, you know, in the upper minors. underscore_underscore_: Yeah. Good word. Jaba: You know, it's a good challenge, even if the pitchers aren't higher end names. You know, it's guys that are just so far ahead of them in terms of experience and where they've played. ⁓ you know, Gomez is down now to eighty six dollars. He's kind of been the number one chase all along. He's gone from one seventy to eighty six over the past week and a half or so since we did our last price check. But we were saying, you know, once Anjou got under a hundred, you know, he was getting into buy territory. underscore_underscore_: Mm-hmm. Jaba: That was before the AFL news and you know I I I I just think, you know, he he's a hold for now, but he's really getting close to being a buy. I think you can wait out the market for a couple more weeks, and that's the only reason why he isn't a bye. ⁓ but, you know underscore_underscore_: You a very short window though, because come October third, if he does anything in the DSL or in the AFL, excuse me, those numbers are gonna shoot right back up. 'Cause you're gonna get like ⁓ a seventeen year old in the AFL like everything we just talked about, all the reporters are gonna say and people are just gonna jump all over it. So I would say it's almost a hold if you have them and a buy if you can find them around that eighty six dollar price point. Truthfully. Jaba: Yeah. Yeah, I I I w if you have any, I would not even think about selling it. And, you know, like we've said before, kinda with the AFL, it's not followed closely enough where I I think if he goes out there and performs like Luis Hernandez did in single A, I don't think anybody really cares. I don't think it impacts his price. You know, you have the easy kind of hand wave of, well, he's seventeen and it's completely valid. I mean anything he does there is kind of a cherry on top. underscore_underscore_: Right. Jaba: Of his status right now. and yeah, it it's really all all upside right now, even though you know we usually say avoid base autos early on. ⁓ you know, like you had said in the last episode, he had I think nine more walks than strikeouts in addition to a ridiculous line. ⁓ so you hope that the approach is advanced enough where he's not just you know gonna be a guy that yeah, he has power, but he's up there swinging and everything, and these smarter old underscore_underscore_: Agree. Jaba: Pitchers are gonna just throw them curveballs in the dirt. ⁓ but yeah, I'm I'm really excited, and I'm excited by the fact that it implies that he'll be skipping the complex and going right to single A. Obviously, you know, not a ton of confidence in that. I'm not ⁓ in any way associated with the Kansas City Royals, but you'd think with this step it would be pretty bizarre for him to go to the complex, maybe if he's dreadful, but ⁓ I just think that it's yeah. underscore_underscore_: Yep. Yeah. And even then Jaba: Yeah, I I just think that it would be very counterintuitive and bizarre. So, you know, that's Angelo Gomez. We've talked about him a lot. I don't know if you want to add anything. underscore_underscore_: Yeah. No, just like i and that's not to say like he could shoot up and then you're so far away too. Like knowing what Rainiel got to and knowing what Kevin Alvarez and Juniker would all Joswar, what they all were last year, like bottoming out like in the forty dollar range for like a Rainiel or a Joswar, like go get him. And it yeah, I'll just be curious to see if he ever gets down that low. Obviously none of them did the A ⁓ the AFL. So it'll just kind of be interesting to see. Jaba: Yeah. Right. Right. underscore_underscore_: If him being here kind of resets his floor or if it's just gonna be a quick ⁓ kind of a quick come up and Jaba: Yeah, that's a great point, 'cause I mean, I think Yoswar was kind of the standout number one guy in last year's class. Obviously Ryan L is insane, but you know, that's the difference between a catcher and a shortstop. People are gonna go with the shortstop. you know, but the product released in late September last year, he's hot, and then you know, there's no more baseball going on, everyone, you know, kinda stops caring, he's not in the news, and you know, you kinda see a low price get established. I know he was down like 60 bucks. ⁓ with Angel Gomez, it's like, okay, well, he's not having that moment where everyone kind of moves on, forgets about him, and then in the you know, in February you're like, ⁓ I gotta go get some of those. You know, now he has that extended window of intrigue. And ⁓ yeah, I'm just really excited to see what he does. I think it's really cool that they're pushing him. And ⁓ you know, I think it's like I said, you know, if he struggles, I I'm not really gonna be any underscore_underscore_: Agree. Jaba: lower on him. I I don't really think it would change my opinion negatively, but I think he could become you know a a a serious shooting star ⁓ for the hobby. but yeah then we're closing out our sell is Johensi Kalame ⁓ with Oakland at $39. I'll I'll let you kick it off so I don't start pulling my hair out at this one. underscore_underscore_: Yep. I mean he's a sell more so just because he's still a base auto at like forty bucks. ⁓ nothing to really do with him, just like where he's at and what he's done to the correlation of a forty dollar base auto, like I think you can do more with forty bucks. Basically, right? Like hit two eighty three, had a couple pumps, twenty RBIs, ten extra base hits, stole a almost ten bags. Like it just I don't know, like Jaba: Yeah. Right. underscore_underscore_: I I don't even know how to what to say is like he's in that second tier and I just feel like a forty dollar base auto at this time. Like you can go get a Joniel Hernandez or an Angel Nunez or Samil Serrano who I think are all very similar, if not better, and you can get them cheaper. You could almost get like two Samil Serrano's for the price of one Colomay. And like Colomay's color is outrageously being bought. Like price wise. Like Jaba: Mm-hmm. It shocking. Shocking. underscore_underscore_: Like and it's not like he's a Yankee or something either. He isn't he is ⁓ the Las Vegas Athletics. Let's see. Yeah, I mean last two base autos were thirty seven, forty seven, a purple did fifty nine. But like his his like golds and better do like real money. So Jaba: Yeah. Yeah, like ⁓ a a black did three grand last week. I kinda thought that was an outlier. There's an up n there's another ending tonight, and when I checked this morning it was already at seventeen hundred, so it that one's gonna be up there. I know orange is I I think an orange did like two or two and a half. ⁓ and again Yeah, and underscore_underscore_: Yeah. Yep. He had a true blue do three hundred yesterday on best offer. Jaba: ⁓ again, this is nothing against him. I think we both actually really like him as a player. underscore_underscore_: I wanna buy him. He's just he's too but then you like a gold shimmer dude two eighteen. I mean, he's just like he's so expensive. Jaba: Yeah, and it's like you said, you know, I'd rather have two base autos of a Nunez, Serrano, or Frontado over, you know, one Columa because that kind of glob of second tier names, once you get out of Gomez, Hernandez and Renteria, you know, they're all just so similar right now where ⁓ you know, ⁓ I I I just find it underscore_underscore_: Yeah. Jaba: fascinating. I'm not really sure, like you said, what's driving it. 'Cause it's not like he's a Yankee. ⁓ you know, there's just really underscore_underscore_: Yeah. He just yeah. Jaba: So yeah, I mean it's fascinating. ⁓ I think it's interesting to see how like random guys can just blow up in Bowman. And ⁓ you know, again, even though we're calling him a sell, this not an indictment on him as a player. It's just more the fact that he's kinda doubling up over guys that are, you know, from the data we have, which is limited, just as good, you know, same conversation and you know, no real you know, there's really just not enough body of work to separate these guys. ⁓ underscore_underscore_: Just as good. Like Right. Jaba: ⁓ so yeah, he he's the sell, but it's more just like ⁓ wow, what is going on with the high end color? You know, if you have high end color, you better get that on eBay. ⁓ But yeah, so underscore_underscore_: Yep. I mean ninety nine at bats, I it was a slower start. Slower later start for him. Just you look if you just looked at the numbers and put them up against everybody else's, you're not saying like this is the guy amongst tier two that you're buying. Now he has like prolific power. He has some of the best raw juice in the class, he's a really good athlete, shortstop. Checks all those boxes as well. So obviously we're not buying just on stats, we buy on tools as well and projection. I just somebody like a Samil Serrano where you can do two for one, like I think I might do that almost every day. Personally. Jaba: Yep. I'm with ya. So ⁓ you got anything else on ⁓ any of these three names or are we good to wrap up ⁓ wrap up there? underscore_underscore_: I think we're probably good. I mean last buy hold sell buy, buy, sell, hold, had Gomez as that buy slash hold. And now I feel like he's leaning more almost towards a buy if you can get him. Just with the new news. I think I don't know. I I don't wanna say you're not gonna lose 'cause you very well could. He could go there and hurt himself week one and people forget about him and he continues to dip. But I feel like him going to the AFL is gonna do a lot more good than bad for him and his market. Jaba: Yep. Yeah, no, it's ⁓ it's all three of them are good players, and ⁓ you know, we'll see. We're gonna keep doing these, so we'll see how the market develops and shakes out. And ⁓ yeah, it's ⁓ an exciting time, so stay tuned ⁓ for more. Thank you all for listening as always, and ⁓ let's go Mets. underscore_underscore_: Ha ha
