- 0:05Welcome to The Hypnotist, the show that gives you inside
- 0:09access to cutting edge hypnosis with real clients facing
- 0:12genuine. Issues.
- 0:13Brought to you by The Hypnotherapist, Demanded by
- 0:16celebrities, CEOs and even royalty, Adam Cox.
- 0:20These recordings took place live from Adam Smith in London's
- 0:24world famous Harley Street. So get yourself comfortable and
- 0:31enjoy today's episode of The Hypnotist.
- 0:38Hi, it's Adam here now. Everyone every now and then
- 0:44accesses a state of procrastination.
- 0:48And the interesting thing is that sometimes the more
- 0:51important The thing is that needs to be done, the more
- 0:55overthinking takes place before it.
- 0:59And this can be very frustrating.
- 1:02I remember for years I considered a podcast before I
- 1:05actually launched the podcast. And even being a hypnotherapist,
- 1:10I delayed that for years and years before I actually did
- 1:13that. And the important things
- 1:15sometimes get delayed. And that's really what this
- 1:19session is all about. I want you to think of an area
- 1:23in your life that you know you've been putting it off for a
- 1:27while. And the reason for that is we're
- 1:30going to work particularly on that area now.
- 1:34I was working with a client that was very familiar with certain
- 1:39botanicals, certain essences of kind of flowers and trees and
- 1:44things like that. And she introduced to me a
- 1:48particular state called the horn beam state.
- 1:52And it was based on a European doctor's work, Aqua Doctor back.
- 1:59And I looked into it and this state called the hornbeam state
- 2:04is that kind of Monday morning state or that state while you
- 2:09know, you've got to do the thing, but you kind of put it
- 2:11off. It's not quite procrastination.
- 2:13It's more procrastination is the consequence of this feeling.
- 2:20And the feeling is not, not quite now I'm not ready yet.
- 2:25That's the horn beam state. Now the horn beam state has got
- 2:29a function. Typically when people are in
- 2:31this state, they do a lot of analysis and research and
- 2:36preparation. They do everything but the
- 2:39thing. They learn more about it.
- 2:41They think about all the risks and the consequences.
- 2:44They just don't pull the trigger.
- 2:45They don't actually execute their plan.
- 2:48So this session is all about harnessing that state to go
- 2:52beyond it. Because actually, the state
- 2:55itself is useful, so long as it's a launchpad into doing the
- 3:01actual thing. If you remain stuck in that,
- 3:04that could be a tragedy, because you never actually quite get to
- 3:07do that thing and you're left wondering.
- 3:09It's also quite a heavy state after a while.
- 3:12Because. All of these what ifs, all of
- 3:15this analysis paralysis keeps you stuck, so breaking from that
- 3:20is quite powerful. So it uses a forest metaphor,
- 3:24this idea of the horn beam tree and, and the horn beam is a
- 3:27tree, a very Hardy tree. And it takes the essence of what
- 3:32would it be to break that. And it ends with two different
- 3:36timelines, the timeline where you never break the state and
- 3:40forever you just never actually do that thing.
- 3:43And it could be a dream, it could be an ambition, it could
- 3:45be a risk, but you never do it. And then the second pathway that
- 3:51leads from the clearing and the floor in the forest is to
- 3:54actually do the thing. And doing The thing is, is
- 3:58challenging, but it's challenging, particularly if you
- 4:02never start the thing or if you get easily dissuade.
- 4:06You start and then you stop. You start and you stop actually
- 4:09doing and sticking to the thing turns inertia to momentum.
- 4:13And it's the momentum that actually is very liberating
- 4:17experience because when you do the thing, you get wiser, you
- 4:21get experiences, you get the feedback loop, you get the
- 4:24dopamine that comes from making progress.
- 4:26There's a lot that comes from the other side of doing that
- 4:28thing. So I would encourage you to
- 4:30think of what is that thing that you know you want?
- 4:34You know that you've got probably more knowledge than
- 4:37most people. You've just been hesitating.
- 4:40You're stuck in the bit before take off.
- 4:44What is that? And then listen to the session.
- 4:46You'll get more from it now. It was a business that the
- 4:51client I was working with was hesitating from.
- 4:54Some of the suggestions would have been perfect for them and
- 4:56not quite right for you, but I've actually created a webinar
- 5:00of what working with me is like. So if you like the idea of
- 5:05working with me to have something bespoke, check the
- 5:08description of this episode. You'll see a way to register for
- 5:12the webinar and then you'll learn a lot more about what
- 5:16actually working with me one to 1 is like.
- 5:18And actually there's some bonus things.
- 5:20You get 10 hypnosis sessions at the end of that webinar
- 5:26recording as well just by staying to the end, so if that's
- 5:29of interest, check that out. It explains it all on the
- 5:32registration page. For now though, you might get
- 5:34some real value from this session.
- 5:35So find a quiet, comfortable place where you won't be
- 5:38distracted or disturbed. Relax and enjoy the session.
- 6:11Take a deep breath in, and as you breathe in, breathe in that
- 6:25resourceful feeling of calm and relaxation.
- 6:30And as you exhale, feel that wonderful feeling of release, as
- 6:40if any tension, any stress, any worries, it's melting away and
- 6:47leaving your body in your outward breath.
- 6:53That's it. Breathing and relaxation,
- 6:58exhaling tension. And the deeper you breathe, the
- 7:04more relaxed you feel. And the more relaxed you feel,
- 7:13the deeper you naturally breathe.
- 7:18And just slowing down the breath activates that dreamlike state
- 7:27within the imagination. And you've been in that place
- 7:34many times when you've been reading a book and suddenly you
- 7:44drift off into that world within your imagination, experiencing
- 7:50it as if it's real, but knowing your physical body is where it
- 7:57is, and it's your imagination that's going on that journey.
- 8:08And I want you to imagine a bookshelf, maybe your bookshelf
- 8:16or maybe someone else's, but just imagine seeing a book about
- 8:23nature and just imagine flicking through the pages until you
- 8:31discover a picture of a forest. Not just any forest, the kind of
- 8:43forest that it's easy to imagine walking within that forest.
- 8:54And maybe you could imagine a forest on a sunny day under blue
- 8:59skies. Maybe it's just after sunrise,
- 9:05or just before sunset, but I want you to allow yourself to
- 9:12imagine walking into that forest, and I want you to
- 9:21imagine how the light comes through the canopy in a
- 9:27particular way, filtering through leaves, touching the
- 9:35ground in patches of warmth. The world around you were awake
- 9:43and yet unhurried, and I wonder if you can notice the ground
- 9:54beneath your feet, the feeling of solid ground on the forest
- 10:03floor, the way the path is clear ahead of you, even if you can
- 10:11only see a little bit of it at a time.
- 10:18And sometimes in nature, you can feel a connection, feel
- 10:24connected to the forest, knowing that the path doesn't need to be
- 10:30fully visible to be fully real. And as you walk, your breathing
- 10:41deepens naturally, your body finding its rhythm, and
- 10:49something begins to settle. It was perhaps a little tight
- 10:55before you arrived in this place, in this forest.
- 11:00The particular quality of a mind that has been given permission
- 11:07to simply be present rather than busy.
- 11:15Each step into the forest takes you deeper into your imagination
- 11:25until you arrive at a clearing and I wonder if you could
- 11:31imagine. Right in the centre of that
- 11:36clearing stands a magnificent horn beam tree.
- 11:47Just stand before it for a moment and simply look and
- 11:53appreciate. The horn beam is not the tallest
- 11:59tree in the forest, and it's not the most dramatic, but there's
- 12:07something about its quality, its presence, that draws your
- 12:13attention and holds it. Something settled and purposeful
- 12:24and strong. Maybe you could imagine placing
- 12:30a hand on its bark, feeling the texture of something that has
- 12:37been growing patiently for a long time.
- 12:44Something that has put its energy not into performance but
- 12:49into substance. Not into appearing strong, but
- 12:57into becoming strong, quietly, year by year, ring by ring.
- 13:10And this tree knows nothing about the weight of not yet
- 13:17started. It has no concept of that
- 13:23feeling like on a Monday morning, that hesitancy, that
- 13:32reluctance. It simply grows, puts out
- 13:39another leaf, another branch, another ring of itself into the
- 13:45world. Not because it has resolved to
- 13:51do so, or suddenly found the motivation, or waited for the
- 13:57right conditions, but because growing is simply what it does
- 14:05when it's alive and you're unconscious can notice something
- 14:14perhaps profound, insightful, important, or maybe just useful
- 14:20as you stand beside that tree. But the heaviness that sometimes
- 14:28gathers around the thought of beginning, the particular
- 14:33weariness that can arrive before a task is touched and disappear
- 14:40so reliably the moment a task is started, that that heaviness has
- 14:48nothing to do with your capability.
- 14:53It's just the essence of inertia, the gap between
- 14:58stillness and motion, and the tree has never been confused
- 15:06about which side of the gap it wants to live on.
- 15:15And I wonder if you can allow your imagination to travel with
- 15:22the tree through all winter and into the moment of spring.
- 15:32The horn beam has been holding everything through the cold
- 15:36months. All that potential, all that
- 15:41capability completely still. Not because anything is wrong,
- 15:53but simply because the season has not yet called for it.
- 16:02And then, as if by magic, something shifts.
- 16:08The light changes by a fraction, the temperature changes by a
- 16:15degree, and something in the tree responds to that smallest
- 16:24of signals. Not with careful deliberation,
- 16:30not with planning or analysis or a full assessment of whether the
- 16:36conditions are optimal, but with a single committed unfurling one
- 16:47leaf. Not a whole canopy, just one
- 16:52leaf pushing through into the air it hasn't touched before.
- 17:03And the remarkable thing is what that single leaf makes possible.
- 17:12Because once one leaf is open, the tree knows something it did
- 17:19not know the moment before. It knows that it can do this,
- 17:27and the second leaf comes more easily, and the third more
- 17:34easily still, and before long the whole magnificent canopy is
- 17:43green and alive, doing the work it was biologically engineered
- 17:51to do. The first leaf is never the
- 17:57hardest one for the tree. It's simply the first one, the
- 18:06one that opens the door for everything that follows.
- 18:13And the horn beam does not wait until it is certain the season
- 18:18will cooperate. It offers its first leaf,
- 18:26creating that natural chain reaction in harmony with the
- 18:37seasons. And what if all of this thinking
- 18:44and planning and preparation was your winter?
- 18:51Not wasted time, but preparing time.
- 18:58The time before the action is time well spent, Like sharpening
- 19:07the saw before attempting to use the saw.
- 19:15But all of that preparation only makes a difference and matters
- 19:21if action is finally taken. And I want you to search within
- 19:31to find that part, the part that now wants to do, to decide
- 19:44without needing to know everything.
- 19:48The willingness to start and learn as you go and just bring
- 19:55that part forward. And that part has experienced
- 20:05time and time again the feeling you get when you start something
- 20:14and then return to it. And each time it gets easier and
- 20:18easier. It's almost like your body, your
- 20:29hands, your mind knows what to do.
- 20:33And isn't it fascinating how more often than not, doing it is
- 20:46actually easier than not doing it?
- 20:51That strange relief of discovering that the thing was
- 20:55never as heavy as the thought of the thing and the energy that
- 21:03arrives not before the work, but inside it.
- 21:16I want you to get a sense. Then, rather than resisting the
- 21:22horn beam, what if we harness the horn beam?
- 21:31What if on the other side of that dread, hesitation or
- 21:36preparation is that relief, that momentum?
- 21:44Maybe that's what the horn beam positive state feels like.
- 21:50Not the forced brightness of trying to feel motivated, and
- 21:55not the grim determination of willpower, but the natural,
- 22:01easy, almost effortless quality of a person who has crossed the
- 22:07threshold and just found the work waiting there manageable
- 22:13and real. Exactly as capable.
- 22:21And I wonder if you can call the bluff of all of those doubts.
- 22:28Because when you do the thing, you realize most of those doubts
- 22:34and what ifs were not real anyway.
- 22:41Your unconscious can install this now, something that lives
- 22:47in the body rather than only in the mind.
- 22:54That knowledge below thought that the other side of beginning
- 23:01is always better than the thought of beginning, that the
- 23:10first action unlocks a state your whole system moves into
- 23:16naturally once the threshold is crossed.
- 23:24Maybe you can recall a memory of a hesitant child on the edge of
- 23:31a cold swimming pool. Perhaps the ocean.
- 23:38They think how cold it will be, so they hesitate.
- 23:44And the more they hesitate, the more they delay.
- 23:52And yet they see friends splashing around in the water.
- 24:01Those first few seconds may be uncomfortable, maybe even a
- 24:06shock, but when you're through the other side, doesn't it feel
- 24:13like fun? And what if there's something
- 24:19else the forest has to offer? This clearing is not only a
- 24:26place to stand and observe, What if it's a place to work?
- 24:34And I want you to imagine you've come to the clearing with
- 24:37something to build, a vision that has been patient in the
- 24:43planning, ideas that are ready to become real, a contribution
- 24:52that is waiting for the hands that can make it.
- 24:56This forest, this horn beam, this clearing, is simply telling
- 25:02you what you already know at the deepest level.
- 25:09The people who need what you are building cannot find it in the
- 25:14drawing. They can't find it in the
- 25:18concept. They can only find it in the
- 25:23built thing. And the built thing begins with
- 25:27a single action, offered with the same quiet commitment with
- 25:36which a tree offers its first spring leaf.
- 25:41Not perfectly, but with guarantees, just genuinely and
- 25:50now. And what you discover as you
- 25:57begin is that the capability was never in doubt.
- 26:06It was always there, patient in the winter and ready in the
- 26:14spring, waiting not for conditions to be perfect, but
- 26:23waiting for you to decide that now is when the building starts.
- 26:47but in your environment. A decision, an action, time
- 26:58connected to doing the thing. Knowing that in the same way
- 27:06that you can follow a trail in the forest and not know the full
- 27:10trail, you can take the first action, trusting that you will
- 27:17be able to learn all those things you don't fully
- 27:24understand yet. You learn by doing, failing,
- 27:35analysing, reflecting, learning some more, and then going
- 27:38forward. You can't know every twist and
- 27:47turn before you start. So allow that part that has
- 27:54confidence in your ability to to ask, to learn, to delegate, to
- 28:05fail and reflect and come back stronger.
- 28:09And when that part is awakened and you're clear what starting
- 28:17looks like and imagine seeing that version of you taking that
- 28:22action and notice it looks more effortless with less resistance.
- 28:36And that time before you started, when you cross the
- 28:41line, you harness the horn beam. But if you never cross the line,
- 28:51the horn beam was holding you back.
- 28:58Allow your unconscious to ask the question, do you want to be
- 29:05held back? What do you want to take action
- 29:13again and again, allowing yourself to move forward.
- 29:24I want you to get a sense of the time will pass anyway.
- 29:32Imagine 2 versions of you. A version of you is waiting for
- 29:40the perfect moment, continuing to analyse, plan and prepare.
- 29:48Every season is winter, and the other version of you launches,
- 29:55starts, is willing to fall down and pick yourself up again.
- 30:03Allow your unconscious to reveal just how different those two
- 30:07versions of you 10 years from now.
- 30:15Which one has accomplished more, impacted more lives?
- 30:23Which one has learnt more, understood more and which one?
- 30:32Which one seems happier? These are two different trails
- 30:42in the forest. Only you can decide which one.
- 30:50So imagine you're back in the clearing and seeing two
- 30:54different trails. The Trail of Hesitancy stuck in
- 31:01the moonbeam on the second trail that harnesses the horn beams
- 31:10power to move beyond hesitancy and forward into action.
- 31:22And then momentum. When you're ready to take that
- 31:28trail, that path, let me know by nodding your head.
- 31:33And now it's time to return. Take a deep breath in through
- 31:40your nose and out through your nose and wiggle your fingers and
- 31:46wiggle your toes, connecting and calibrating into the here and
- 31:50the now as I now count from 1:00 to 10:00 to awaken you.
- 31:59Starting to count 123 Waking up 456 more alert. 7-8.
- 32:07Open your eyes. Open your eyes. 910.
- 32:11Wide awake, wide awake, wide awake.
- 32:27Thank you so much for joining me on.
