- 0:00Aloha. Tuesday morning in Hawaiʻi. I'm Mele with what's happening today.
- 1:59It's wet across all the islands right now. A band of moist air is moving in, bringing scattered to numerous showers through this evening. Windward slopes and higher elevations will see the heaviest rain, but leeward areas will get showers too. Brief bursts of heavy rain are possible, so there's a risk of localized flooding over the next 24 hours. If you're heading out today, expect damp conditions everywhere — bring the umbrella and skip summit trips if visibility gets worse.
- 2:23The ocean is active. Oʻahu's south shore is running 4.8 feet with moderate conditions — watch for shore break and rip currents. North shore is 4.5 feet, also moderate. Maui's small at 3.9 feet, which is comfortable for swimmers and beginner snorkelers. Big Island is calm at 1.5 feet. Kauaʻi is moderate at 4.1 feet. Avoid boating in the Maui and Big Island channels if you're not experienced — strong winds are making the water rough.
- 2:45Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park has two trail closures this week — Kīpukapuaulu is shut due to hazardous trees, and the Lava Tube Bridge is undergoing replacement. Kīlauea is erupting at advisory level, and volcanic ash is a hazard on park grounds. If you're planning the Big Island, plan around those closures and watch for ash in the air near the caldera.
- 3:03Kīlauea hit a new record this week. Episode 48 ended yesterday after about nine hours of lava fountaining in Halemaʻumaʻu crater — and it's now the most episodic-fountaining eruption on record here, breaking the old record that Puʻuʻōʻō held for decades. If you're tracking the volcano, this is significant stuff. The full breakdown is on the site.
- 3:20Wednesday brings drier conditions and trade winds start to kick in. Thursday the swell climbs on south and north shores — stay unsettled through the weekend, but leeward coasts get their break starting Wednesday.
- 3:31If you're planning beach time this week, our north-shore guide breaks down which spots are safer when the surf is up. Catch you tomorrow.
