- 3:29Speaker 3: Um, check out gun shy fix.com.
- 3:31Speaker 3: Uh, if your dog is struggling with some gun shy issues, you can check that out.
- 3:35Speaker 3: And see and use that program to help hopefully help your dog get through his gun issues.

- 3:50Speaker 3: So I know I'm forgetting something else, but I think we're gonna go to the show.
- 3:56Speaker 3: So enjoy.
- 3:57Speaker 3: Have a great day.
- 3:58Speaker: Hey folks.
- 3:59Speaker: Welcome to the Bird Dog Podcast.
- 4:01Speaker: My name is Tyce Erickson and I will be your host today.
- 4:04Speaker: Thanks for listening in.
- 4:05Speaker: Sorry my voice is already going out here.
- 4:07Speaker: Um, I got my good friend Mike Birch.
- 4:10Speaker: He's been on the podcast before and I finally pinned him down to talk, uh, about his king Ider hunt.
- 4:16Speaker: And, uh, he's put me in his nice office chair and he's sitting in, I'm sitting in the, the king's chair here, and Mike sits in, is being nice and that's
- 4:25Speaker 2: all right.
- 4:26Speaker 2: This is a nice office chair too,
- 4:27Speaker: sitting in the chair.
- 4:28Speaker: And we're painting the picture here.
- 4:30Speaker: We're at the base, we're in his office, and behind me.
- 4:32Speaker: We have all these amazing, duck mounts that he has, collected over the years.
- 4:37Speaker: And I've been, been on some of the hunts when he is taken some of the species.
- 4:41Speaker: But we have, you know, hooded ganzer and goldeneye and borrows and a, is that a ring neck down there?
- 4:48Speaker 2: Ring neck.
- 4:49Speaker: We got a ring neck and a redhead and a buffle head and a wood duck.
- 4:52Speaker: And
- 4:52Speaker 2: a lesser scalp.
- 4:53Speaker 2: A
- 4:53Speaker: lesser scalp.
- 4:55Speaker: And then we got the three till, the cinnamon blue wing and
- 4:59Speaker 2: green wing.
- 4:59Speaker: Green wing and the, we got a Harlequin and we have aco.
- 5:03Speaker: That's a white wing, isn't it?
- 5:04Speaker 2: Well, yeah, white wing, black
- 5:05Speaker: scooter, wing, scooter.
- 5:06Speaker: And then we have a mallard and a pair of king iers.
- 5:09Speaker: And that's gonna be the, the main topic of the show here.
- 5:12Speaker: Then we have a, a wid and a um, shoveler and a gad wall.
- 5:18Speaker: So gad
- 5:18Speaker 2: wall got a pintail down on the corner.
- 5:20Speaker: Then we have some, uh, so are these taken in, taken in Canada?
- 5:24Speaker: Those snow geese?
- 5:25Speaker 2: Yeah, the snow geese were, uh, were up in Canada.
- 5:28Speaker 2: Actually.
- 5:29Speaker 2: All of them were that little Ross's.
- 5:31Speaker: Is that a cackler or is that
- 5:32Speaker 2: a, it's not a, it's a Ross's or, or no, I'm sorry, Richard.
- 5:35Speaker 2: Not Ross's or Richardson's
- 5:36Speaker: Richardson.
- 5:37Speaker: Yeah.
- 5:38Speaker: Yeah.
- 5:38Speaker: That is so cool.
- 5:39Speaker: It's, it's a little, if you guys haven't ever seen one, but they're like a mini Canadian Goose, Canada Goose.
- 5:45Speaker: I should Canada Goose.
- 5:46Speaker: Yeah, I should get that right.
- 5:47Speaker: Some guy corrected me one time, so it's not Canadian.
- 5:50Speaker: I'm like, all right.
- 5:52Speaker: Hey, I'm not perfect here would, but you know, I'm talking about
- 5:54Speaker 2: Yeah, no, that, that Richardson's is, well, it's bigger than a Mallard, but not much.
- 6:01Speaker: No.
- 6:01Speaker: Yeah,
- 6:01Speaker 2: it's pretTyce small.
- 6:02Speaker 2: It's pretTyce cool.
- 6:03Speaker: Yeah.
- 6:04Speaker: This, this, this year up in Idaho, those ones we shot were Richardson, right?
- 6:09Speaker 2: I, I wasn't on the trip.
- 6:10Speaker 2: You weren't
- 6:10Speaker: there this year.
- 6:11Speaker 2: No.
- 6:12Speaker 2: Ah, I had a few other things going on in my lifetimes.
- 6:14Speaker: Yeah, you, yeah, you did.
- 6:16Speaker: Anyways, I got, I think they're Richardson.
- 6:18Speaker: I got a couple on.
- 6:19Speaker: I'm gonna keep in Mount too, so.
- 6:21Speaker: I'm looking forward to that.
- 6:22Speaker: But anyhow, Mike, thanks for, thanks for taking some time to be with me, man, and
- 6:27Speaker 2: talk.
- 6:27Speaker 2: Yeah, welcome to the office,
- 6:28Speaker: talk hunting and dogs and everything.
- 6:30Speaker: So, um, I want to, so a lot of people when they're thinking of waterfowl, kind of the, the biggest thing to hunt out there is generally the King Ider, and I'd say like Harlequin, those are probably two really big, you know, sea ducks that are on people's lists.
- 6:47Speaker: And, and Mike's gone and done that.
- 6:49Speaker: He's, he's been on that adventure.
- 6:51Speaker: And so I wanted to just get his story about hunting King Ider in Alaska and kind of, I want you just to take us along for the journey and how it was and what you did and everything like that.
- 7:03Speaker: So,
- 7:04Speaker 2: yeah.
- 7:04Speaker 2: Well, the, the, the genesis of the trip or what planted the seed in my mind was, uh.
- 7:13Speaker 2: A taxidermist, you and I share Troy.
- 7:16Speaker: Mm-hmm.
- 7:16Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 7:17Speaker 2: It was down in his studio.
- 7:18Speaker 2: I don't know if I was dropping ducks off or picking'em up.
- 7:20Speaker 2: Probably both.
- 7:22Speaker 2: And, um, he had, he was doing a king ider and we got talking about it.
- 7:27Speaker 2: Mm-hmm.
- 7:28Speaker 2: And that, that planted the seed.
- 7:30Speaker 2: That's where it all started and started doing a little research about those birds and mm-hmm.
- 7:35Speaker 2: Where you hunt'em and, you know, what they're all about in terms of their migration and where they live.
- 7:40Speaker 2: And it just, uh, like a lot of things, all things waterfowl pulled it, pulled me in.
- 7:46Speaker: Mm-hmm.
- 7:46Speaker 2: And, uh, at that, that's the point where I said, I'm going to St.
- 7:51Speaker 2: Paul Island in Alaska.
- 7:52Speaker: Yeah.
- 7:53Speaker 2: And, uh, the trip actually was, was pretTyce spontaneous.
- 7:56Speaker 2: I, I thought I'd have to wait a year or two to get out there.
- 8:00Speaker: Mm-hmm.
- 8:00Speaker 2: And, um.
- 8:02Speaker 2: I decided I'd check a, uh, if there was a solo spot available.
- 8:05Speaker 2: And there was,
- 8:06Speaker: it was a, it wasn't a cancellation.
- 8:08Speaker 2: It was a cancellation.
- 8:09Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 8:09Speaker 2: And, and so I called them, and they're actually, there are two different slots.
- 8:13Speaker 2: One was over Christmas, which I didn't want to do, and then the next one was in January.
- 8:17Speaker 2: Mm-hmm.
- 8:17Speaker 2: Towards the end of the season.
- 8:18Speaker 2: So I took that spot.
- 8:20Speaker: Mm-hmm.
- 8:20Speaker 2: And uh, made the reservation and I think two months later I was on a plane.
- 8:25Speaker: Yeah.
- 8:26Speaker 2: So it happened pretTyce quick.
- 8:27Speaker: Those cancellation hunts, I mean, if people are flexible, you can, you can save some money.
- 8:32Speaker: There's always stuff that comes up in people's lives it seems like.
- 8:35Speaker: And it's like if you probably call, I don't know how far in advance you call the outfitter to get that cancellation hunt, but probably if you're close to the season and you say, Hey, if someone drops out.
- 8:44Speaker: Gimme a call.
- 8:45Speaker: 'cause they usually lose the deposit and that benefits
- 8:47Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 8:48Speaker: You and you get a better deal on
- 8:49Speaker 2: it.
- 8:49Speaker 2: And I, and, and I didn't even do that.
- 8:51Speaker 2: I just called him and said, Hey, I'm a solo hunter and, and anytime you can slot a solo hunter and let me know, he goes, well,
- 8:56Speaker: mm-hmm.
- 8:57Speaker 2: I got a spot in two months.
- 8:58Speaker: Mm-hmm.
- 8:59Speaker 2: So that's, that's, it was really just kinda spontaneous how it worked out.
- 9:02Speaker: Yeah.
- 9:03Speaker: You got a better deal on it too, didn't you?
- 9:05Speaker: Yeah.
- 9:06Speaker: Yeah.
- 9:06Speaker: With that cancellation.
- 9:07Speaker 2: Mm-hmm.
- 9:07Speaker: Yeah.
- 9:08Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 9:08Speaker 2: He, he obviously wanted somebody in the seat versus no one in the seat.
- 9:11Speaker 2: So,
- 9:12Speaker: yeah,
- 9:12Speaker 2: I got a, I got a good deal on it.
- 9:14Speaker: That brown bear hunt I did in Alaska was a cancellation hunt that me and my buddy went on too.
- 9:19Speaker: So I was a better deal.
- 9:20Speaker: So I kind of, I know.
- 9:22Speaker: Yeah.
- 9:22Speaker: If you, if you're flexible and you're open to it and can kind of go on a whim, you can.
- 9:27Speaker: I think save some money on those cancellation hunts for sure.
- 9:30Speaker: So yeah, Mike always like, I gotta get on a king ider hunt.
- 9:33Speaker: Gotta get, and he's like, I'm going with or without you.
- 9:35Speaker 2: I know.
- 9:36Speaker: I couldn't make it.
- 9:37Speaker: So he went without me.
- 9:38Speaker 2: Well, so now I,
- 9:39Speaker: he did bring home a bird for me though.
- 9:41Speaker: And we were just talking before this podcast.
- 9:43Speaker: I'm like, man, maybe if I, my wife doesn't listen to these podcasts, I can say this, but I said, I told Mike, I said, well, if I get one of those birds mounted and put in my office and my wife says, why do you need to go get a king Ider?
- 9:54Speaker: You already have one the mike brought you.
- 9:57Speaker: And so maybe, I don't know, maybe I, maybe I'll wait until you do the hunt or something.
- 10:02Speaker 2: You ought think that through before I, yeah,
- 10:04Speaker: you gotta think that one
- 10:04Speaker 2: through.
- 10:05Speaker 2: Right.
- 10:06Speaker 2: But you know, just I guess backing away Tyces from that, the hunt itself for a minute, um, you know, I blame you for getting me into waterfowl hunting and dogs, bird dogs and, uh, a lot of things actually.
- 10:19Speaker 2: But, um, uh.
- 10:22Speaker 2: You know, I was so focused for so long on just, you know, puddle ducks and mm-hmm.
- 10:27Speaker 2: Diving ducks and, you know, all the things we shoot here.
- 10:30Speaker: Yeah.
- 10:31Speaker 2: Um, not just here, Idaho, uh, Montana states.
- 10:35Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 10:35Speaker 2: Montana.
- 10:35Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 10:36Speaker 2: I go up to Alaska every year and I've gone down south
- 10:39Speaker: mm-hmm.
- 10:40Speaker 2: Southeast, you know, a handful of times, but, you know, as I got further and further into freshwater ducks, I guess.
- 10:47Speaker 2: Mm-hmm.
- 10:48Speaker 2: Um, and I, and I had shot most of them.
- 10:50Speaker 2: Mm-hmm.
- 10:51Speaker 2: I got thinking about sea ducks and, um, the king ider hunt was my foray into sea duck hunting, and I came home with three trophies, you know, three different species that are now in my library.
- 11:02Speaker 2: So, so
- 11:03Speaker: tell us what you got.
- 11:05Speaker: Up there well far as why you shot, what you saw, what was available.
- 11:08Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 11:08Speaker 2: So, so the hunt, you know, they tell you that the hunt is all about king iers.
- 11:12Speaker 2: Mm-hmm.
- 11:12Speaker 2: I mean, that's why everyone goes Sure.
- 11:13Speaker 2: But they'll tell you there are four species of, uh, sea ducks that you have, you'll likely have an opportuniTyce to hunt or to kill, shoot.
- 11:21Speaker 2: Um, the king Ider, of course.
- 11:24Speaker 2: Mm-hmm.
- 11:25Speaker 2: Um, the, uh, white wing, black scoter.
- 11:27Speaker: Mm-hmm.
- 11:28Speaker 2: Uh, Harlequin.
- 11:29Speaker 2: And then long tail.
- 11:31Speaker: Oh, there are long tail.
- 11:32Speaker 2: Oh, yeah, yeah.
- 11:32Speaker 2: There are.
- 11:33Speaker: Did you guys see some?
- 11:34Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 11:34Speaker 2: In fact, there, uh, several guys in our group did, did bag a long tail.
- 11:38Speaker 2: Uh, I bagged the ider, the, uh, Koder and the mm-hmm.
- 11:44Speaker 2: Harlequin Har Harlequins a neat story too.
- 11:46Speaker 2: I, I shot a double on a, on a, you know, on a single shot.
- 11:49Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 11:49Speaker 2: Which was kind of cool.
- 11:51Speaker 2: Especially in the ocean, man.
- 11:52Speaker 2: You're you're riding these swells.
- 11:54Speaker 2: Yeah, everything's moving.
- 11:55Speaker 2: Everything's frozen.
- 11:56Speaker 2: And
- 11:56Speaker: Are you sure someone didn't shoot those with you?
- 11:57Speaker: Like Idaho?
- 11:58Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 11:58Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 12:00Speaker 2: It's weird.
- 12:00Speaker 2: TI shoot doubles in Idaho when you're there.
- 12:03Speaker 2: I shoot,
- 12:03Speaker: I shoot doubles all the
- 12:04Speaker 2: time.
- 12:05Speaker 2: I shoot doubles in
- 12:05Speaker: Alaska.
- 12:06Speaker: I Are you sure that's not like group shooting?
- 12:08Speaker 2: No, I shoot doubles in Alaska when you're not there.
- 12:10Speaker 2: So the common denominator is mean, not you.
- 12:13Speaker: It's kind of a, it's kind of an inside joke.
- 12:16Speaker: He shot these redheads and I was like, no, I got both.
- 12:18Speaker: We, I helped you.
- 12:19Speaker: And he's like, no, I got those or something.
- 12:22Speaker: I, it was something weird.
- 12:23Speaker 2: Well, I was targeting
- 12:24Speaker: razzing
- 12:24Speaker 2: each other.
- 12:24Speaker 2: I was targeting a redhead on that trip.
- 12:26Speaker 2: You, this was on the Snake River?
- 12:28Speaker: Yeah.
- 12:29Speaker 2: That was a double too.
- 12:30Speaker: Yeah.
- 12:30Speaker: Well that's what I'm, that's the double I'm talking about right?
- 12:33Speaker: Is that we're being It's funny about, so
- 12:36Speaker 2: anyhow, anyways, anything to razz me, I guess?
- 12:40Speaker: No, he did shoot a double redhead, so that was cool.
- 12:44Speaker: Um, so yeah.
- 12:45Speaker: So did you, are there any, did I ask you this?
- 12:47Speaker: Is there any other scoter species up there?
- 12:50Speaker 2: I don't think so.
- 12:51Speaker 2: I don't think so.
- 12:52Speaker 2: I don't, I I don't remember them talking about it.
- 12:54Speaker 2: I didn't see any, any, you know, the, the white wing, black scoter I shot's like I got lucky.
- 13:00Speaker 2: It was perfect.
- 13:00Speaker: Yeah.
- 13:02Speaker 2: You know it, you know, I didn't hit it hard enough to kill it, obviously.
- 13:04Speaker 2: But
- 13:05Speaker: Did
- 13:05Speaker 2: you
- 13:05see
- 13:05Speaker: a lot of them
- 13:06Speaker 2: there?
- 13:06Speaker 2: There were plenTyce up there.
- 13:08Speaker: Oh, okay.
- 13:08Speaker 2: It's all about getting the shot.
- 13:09Speaker 2: I mean, it is so difficult.
- 13:11Speaker: Yeah.
- 13:12Speaker 2: Um,'cause it's obviously past shooting.
- 13:14Speaker 2: I mean, they're not decoin birds.
- 13:16Speaker 2: You're trying to get their attention with decoy.
- 13:18Speaker 2: You're, well, I'll get back to that.
- 13:19Speaker: I didn't know that.
- 13:20Speaker: Yeah.
- 13:20Speaker: I want to get, let's kind of start back at the beginning.
- 13:23Speaker: Let's rewind.
- 13:23Speaker: Like what?
- 13:24Speaker: Maybe let's talk about travel, getting there maybe.
- 13:28Speaker: Perfect.
- 13:28Speaker: What gear they recommended bringing?
- 13:30Speaker: Just so if someone wants to do this hunt.
- 13:32Speaker: This happened about a year ago for Mike, so I was trying to track, I've been trying to track him down, so I'm glad we get to hear this story.
- 13:38Speaker 2: Yeah,
- 13:39Speaker: yeah.
- 13:39Speaker 2: Maybe let's talk, let's talk gear first.
- 13:42Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 13:42Speaker 2: And then, and then getting there.
- 13:43Speaker: Mm-hmm.
- 13:43Speaker: Yeah.
- 13:43Speaker 2: How's that?
- 13:44Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 13:44Speaker 2: And then, and then the hunt itself?
- 13:45Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 13:45Speaker 2: Or the, the four days I was there.
- 13:47Speaker: Yeah.
- 13:47Speaker 2: So, um, gear, uh, first of all, everything's gonna get wet
- 13:52Speaker: and salTyce.
- 13:53Speaker 2: Everything.
- 13:54Speaker 2: Um, my gun, I mean, I, I made sure I wiped it down every night.
- 13:59Speaker 2: Dried it.
- 14:00Speaker 2: Uh, the last, did
- 14:01Speaker: you still get rust on
- 14:02Speaker 2: it?
- 14:02Speaker 2: I, it, I opened my case up when I got home and it was just destroyed.
- 14:06Speaker 2: It was rust,
- 14:06Speaker: man.
- 14:07Speaker 2: So
- 14:07Speaker: what were you, what were you shooting?
- 14:08Speaker 2: Uh, I was super Black Eagle.
- 14:10Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 14:11Speaker 2: I was shooting a, a, a benelli.
- 14:12Speaker 2: Okay.
- 14:13Speaker 2: So, unfortunately it didn't have that new best finish with mm-hmm.
- 14:17Speaker 2: You know, that.
- 14:18Speaker 2: Has the anti corrosive 25 year guarantee.
- 14:21Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 14:21Speaker 2: But yeah, I got home, I had to send it away and, and have it, uh, completely redone.
- 14:27Speaker 2: It is fine now, but my point is, is it is as about abusive as environment as you can get.
- 14:33Speaker 2: Yeah,
- 14:33Speaker: yeah.
- 14:33Speaker 2: Um, wet, salTyce, um, not so much dirTyce or sandy.
- 14:38Speaker 2: 'cause you're in a, you're in a boat, you're in a skiff, sweat
- 14:40Speaker: and moist and
- 14:41Speaker 2: just everything's sweatt.
- 14:42Speaker: Yeah.
- 14:43Speaker 2: And I, you know, I bought what I thought was all the best gear and I did buy good gear.
- 14:48Speaker 2: I'm not saying the gear was bad, but it, it's just almost impossible to stay dry.
- 14:53Speaker: Hmm.
- 14:53Speaker 2: Um, even with
- 14:54Speaker: yeah,
- 14:54Speaker 2: the best gear and, uh, being layered up and
- 14:58Speaker: a lot of those Alaska guys, they'll kind of wear that, I don't know if they were wearing it there, that fisherman kind of that rubber
- 15:03Speaker 2: mm-hmm.
- 15:04Speaker: Kind of thick coats and pants and it's just
- 15:06Speaker 2: Yep.
- 15:07Speaker 2: And that's exactly what I bought and took.
- 15:09Speaker: Oh, you did take
- 15:09Speaker 2: that?
- 15:10Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 15:10Speaker 2: So you, you really not, you really don't need camo.
- 15:12Speaker 2: I mean, a lot of guys will show up and, I mean, I took a bunch of my Sitka stuff.
- 15:16Speaker 2: Just'cause I have it.
- 15:17Speaker: Sure.
- 15:18Speaker 2: But you don't, you don't need it.
- 15:20Speaker 2: Um, if you
- 15:20Speaker: wear some darker
- 15:21Speaker 2: color, fine.
- 15:21Speaker 2: I just wore You'd be fine.
- 15:22Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 15:22Speaker 2: Dark gray.
- 15:23Speaker 2: My, my, uh, my gear was all black.
- 15:26Speaker: Okay.
- 15:27Speaker 2: Um, I'm trying to think of the brand.
- 15:29Speaker 2: It's it's
- 15:30Speaker: the Heli Hanson.
- 15:31Speaker: Is that
- 15:31Speaker 2: what they use?
- 15:31Speaker 2: No, it's not.
- 15:31Speaker 2: It.
- 15:32Speaker 2: They do, that's one of the brands.
- 15:33Speaker 2: It's not, it's, um, grins.
- 15:36Speaker: Oh yeah.
- 15:37Speaker 2: I bought Gron stuff.
- 15:38Speaker: Is that what they, did they give you a list of
- 15:40Speaker 2: recommendations or anything they gave?
- 15:41Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 15:41Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 15:42Speaker 2: And I called and talked to'em.
- 15:43Speaker: Mm-hmm.
- 15:43Speaker 2: So, um, you know, the Ammos, there's no special ammo.
- 15:49Speaker 2: What,
- 15:49Speaker: what were you shooting?
- 15:50Speaker: You
- 15:50Speaker 2: remember?
- 15:50Speaker 2: I was shooting tungsten.
- 15:51Speaker 2: Okay.
- 15:53Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 15:53Speaker 2: What
- 15:53Speaker: shot?
- 15:54Speaker: Four shot?
- 15:55Speaker 2: I think it was four.
- 15:56Speaker 2: Yeah, I think it was four or five.
- 15:57Speaker 2: It was four or five.
- 15:58Speaker: Mm-hmm.
- 15:59Speaker 2: Um, I mean, the birds swing in pretTyce tight.
- 16:02Speaker 2: You're not
- 16:03Speaker: Okay.
- 16:03Speaker 2: Shooting great.
- 16:03Speaker 2: They're just not decoin.
- 16:05Speaker 2: I mean, they're, they're just passing by.
- 16:07Speaker 2: But, um, yeah.
- 16:09Speaker 2: So I would, you know, if I was going again, you need multiple.
- 16:14Speaker: Yeah.
- 16:14Speaker: What would you say?
- 16:15Speaker 2: I,
- 16:16Speaker: I should have taken that and I didn't, if you remember.
- 16:18Speaker 2: Well, I would just take three.
- 16:21Speaker 2: I would take three sets of clothing.
- 16:24Speaker: Okay.
- 16:24Speaker 2: A, a fresh set for every day.
- 16:26Speaker 2: Just so you, they're dry, they're clean, they're, you're not trying to walk underneath
- 16:29Speaker: clothing.
- 16:29Speaker 2: Oh, yeah.
- 16:29Speaker 2: All the layers.
- 16:30Speaker 2: The base.
- 16:31Speaker 2: Mm-hmm.
- 16:32Speaker 2: I mean, obviously the shell.
- 16:33Speaker 2: Mm-hmm.
- 16:33Speaker 2: Uh, the, the, the waterproof outside.
- 16:35Speaker 2: I just, I had one of those.
- 16:37Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 16:37Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 16:37Speaker 2: But several sets of gloves, socks, beanies, multiple.
- 16:42Speaker: How cold was it?
- 16:43Speaker 2: Um, temperature wise?
- 16:47Speaker 2: I, I, man that I don't rain.
- 16:51Speaker 2: I don't recall.
- 16:51Speaker 2: It wasn't, there was snow on the ground for sure.
- 16:55Speaker: Mm-hmm.
- 16:55Speaker 2: Um, we didn't get any rain that we would've got snow one day.
- 16:59Speaker 2: We couldn't hunt.
- 17:00Speaker 2: Uh uh.
- 17:03Speaker 2: The wind was too bad.
- 17:03Speaker 2: The, the wind was what?
- 17:04Speaker 2: 40, 45 miles an hour.
- 17:05Speaker 2: The swells were over 10, 12 feet.
- 17:08Speaker: Wow.
- 17:08Speaker 2: We just, you sit in the lodge and play Yeah.
- 17:11Speaker 2: Play cards.
- 17:11Speaker: Yeah.
- 17:12Speaker 2: But, um.
- 17:14Speaker 2: So I would just tell anybody going up there, get the best waterproof out, out outer layer you can.
- 17:20Speaker: Okay.
- 17:21Speaker 2: Uh, I do not cut corners on that.
- 17:23Speaker 2: And then just take multiple layers, uh, you know, setups for each day for your,
- 17:28Speaker: did they have, sorry to cut.
- 17:29Speaker: Did they have dryers or anything?
- 17:31Speaker: You could dry your clothes.
- 17:31Speaker: They
- 17:32Speaker 2: did.
- 17:32Speaker 2: They did.
- 17:32Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 17:33Speaker 2: You could.
- 17:33Speaker 2: I didn't wanna deal with, I didn't wanna deal with that.
- 17:35Speaker: Sure.
- 17:36Speaker 2: You know, you're, you're out all day.
- 17:37Speaker 2: You're,
- 17:37Speaker: yeah.
- 17:38Speaker 2: So, but um,
- 17:41Speaker: do you remember it being like, do you remember it being really cold or not?
- 17:44Speaker 2: It was cold.
- 17:45Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 17:45Speaker 2: No, I remember it being cold.
- 17:46Speaker 2: You're, it's cold.
- 17:47Speaker: Okay.
- 17:48Speaker 2: But I can't,
- 17:49Speaker: I don't know if it was some trips you're like, nah, that was so dang cold.
- 17:52Speaker: Or you're like, oh, it was cold.
- 17:53Speaker: Uh, it's
- 17:53Speaker 2: good.
- 17:53Speaker 2: No, I wouldn't say dang.
- 17:54Speaker 2: I mean, I've been dang cold.
- 17:55Speaker: Yeah.
- 17:56Speaker 2: Uh, up in a lot.
- 17:56Speaker 2: It was
- 17:56Speaker: just good
- 17:57Speaker 2: winter cold in Canada.
- 17:57Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 17:58Speaker 2: It was just a winter, you know, ocean.
- 18:00Speaker 2: Everything's wet.
- 18:01Speaker: HumidiTyce cold.
- 18:02Speaker 2: Yep.
- 18:02Speaker: Yeah.
- 18:03Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 18:03Speaker 2: It's that kind of cold,
- 18:04Speaker: that kind of cold cuts through though.
- 18:06Speaker: The humidiTyce stuff.
- 18:08Speaker: Cuts.
- 18:08Speaker: It seems like it cuts through your layers in clothing.
- 18:10Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 18:11Speaker: So,
- 18:12Speaker 2: um, so anyways, that, that was a setup.
- 18:15Speaker 2: I mean,
- 18:16Speaker: so shotguns, do you recommend like, Hey, don't take a nice shotgun, just get a, like a cheap pump and take it, or you can do it or?
- 18:23Speaker 2: No, I, I wouldn't change that.
- 18:25Speaker 2: I mean, this is a, for a lot of people it would probably be once in a lifetime trip
- 18:29Speaker: bucket, less hunt.
- 18:30Speaker: Yeah.
- 18:30Speaker 2: I mean, I just, I'd say take your best.
- 18:33Speaker 2: Just know it's gonna get abused.
- 18:34Speaker: Just clean it real good.
- 18:35Speaker 2: Yep.
- 18:36Speaker 2: Um, yeah, I wasn't gonna take a substandard gun.
- 18:39Speaker: Yeah.
- 18:40Speaker: Okay.
- 18:41Speaker: That's good information.
- 18:42Speaker: What about waiters?
- 18:44Speaker: Did you wear waiters needed waiters?
- 18:46Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 18:46Speaker 2: So, uh, you don't have to have waiters, uh, for sure.
- 18:51Speaker 2: But, uh, I took'em.
- 18:52Speaker 2: I wore'em.
- 18:53Speaker: Okay.
- 18:54Speaker 2: Um, it's just another way to stay dry.
- 18:56Speaker: Mm-hmm.
- 18:58Speaker 2: You know, it's, I mean, you're not getting in the ocean.
- 19:00Speaker: Okay.
- 19:00Speaker: So you're just stepping into the boat off.
- 19:02Speaker 2: If you are, that's another problem.
- 19:03Speaker: Okay.
- 19:05Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 19:05Speaker 2: The ri the risk is pretTyce high.
- 19:07Speaker 2: I mean, you don't
- 19:09Speaker: Yeah.
- 19:09Speaker 2: If you went in the water, I, I, I
- 19:11Speaker: don't.
- 19:11Speaker: Well, I'm just, or you're not put, you're not walking into the meter.
- 19:13Speaker: Get into the're.
- 19:14Speaker: Just
- 19:14Speaker 2: at the boat ramp.
- 19:15Speaker: There's a boat dock, you're stepping off into the boat.
- 19:18Speaker 2: Right.
- 19:18Speaker: Okay.
- 19:19Speaker 2: Right.
- 19:19Speaker: So you technically don't need, per se, waiters.
- 19:22Speaker: So some good waterproof boots and like muck boots or something would suffice.
- 19:27Speaker: Suffice.
- 19:28Speaker: But maybe I
- 19:28Speaker 2: would still wear waiters.
- 19:29Speaker: I'd still wear it.
- 19:30Speaker: Yeah.
- 19:30Speaker 2: Yeah,
- 19:31Speaker: yeah.
- 19:31Speaker 2: It's just another level of waterproof.
- 19:33Speaker: Yeah.
- 19:33Speaker: Well, it's in your duck hunting on a boat, so it's just nice to have that water splashing on you or
- 19:38Speaker 2: Right.
- 19:39Speaker: Whatever it may be, you know, then you can layer underneath it and keep warm and keep your, yeah.
- 19:43Speaker: Keep yourself dry.
- 19:44Speaker: So, okay, so gear.
- 19:48Speaker: Okay.
- 19:48Speaker: We talked about shotguns.
- 19:49Speaker: We talked about kind of what you're wearing.
- 19:52Speaker: Camo.
- 19:53Speaker: Camo, not needed.
- 19:54Speaker: We talked about, um.
- 19:57Speaker: Uh, shotgun shells.
- 20:00Speaker: Do you think you'd, you need ts then, or you, I mean, you can get away, I'm sure with obviously still shot too.
- 20:04Speaker: I
- 20:04Speaker 2: mean, you could shoot bismuth, you could shoot tung, you can just shoot
- 20:07Speaker: Yeah.
- 20:08Speaker 2: Whatever you're comfortable with.
- 20:09Speaker 2: You could shoot up there.
- 20:10Speaker: Tungston, iss dense.
- 20:11Speaker: It's just,
- 20:11Speaker 2: yeah,
- 20:12Speaker: it's, it's a, yeah.
- 20:13Speaker 2: Again, I was taking my best gun and it and
- 20:15Speaker: you need to pause that.
- 20:16Speaker: Need
- 20:16Speaker 2: your
- 20:16Speaker: phone?
- 20:17Speaker: No.
- 20:17Speaker 2: Okay.
- 20:17Speaker 2: No.
- 20:17Speaker: Okay.
- 20:17Speaker: We're good.
- 20:18Speaker 2: Um, I was taking my best gun and I was taking the best ammo.
- 20:21Speaker: Yeah.
- 20:22Speaker 2: Again, it's a, it's a bucket list trip.
- 20:23Speaker: Big, a big hunt.
- 20:24Speaker: Yeah.
- 20:24Speaker 2: It's only a couple places on the planet.
- 20:26Speaker 2: You can hunt these things.
- 20:27Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 20:27Speaker 2: And I just knew it's, it's not a day everyday experience.
- 20:29Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 20:29Speaker 2: I wasn't, I wasn't gonna miss it.
- 20:31Speaker: Yeah.
- 20:31Speaker: I think, I think to my knowledge, the only place you can hunt them pretTyce much is Alaska.
- 20:37Speaker: At least where people seem to get'em is Greenland and Alaska.
- 20:40Speaker: Yep.
- 20:41Speaker: Is kind, you know.
- 20:41Speaker: Any, any other spots
- 20:43Speaker 2: off the
- 20:43Speaker: top of your
- 20:43Speaker 2: head?
- 20:43Speaker 2: Nope.
- 20:43Speaker 2: Those are the only two.
- 20:45Speaker 2: Um, you know, I even talked to our guide while I was up there and asked him, you know, how far south they come from where we were.
- 20:52Speaker 2: Mm-hmm.
- 20:52Speaker 2: You know, did they get into Cold Bay out on Yeah,
- 20:54Speaker: yeah,
- 20:54Speaker 2: yeah.
- 20:54Speaker 2: Do you see'em on that?
- 20:55Speaker 2: On the Ellucian Islands?
- 20:56Speaker 2: He said, no, you see Pacific EERs, but you don't see the Kings don't go that far south, so they say
- 21:00way
- 21:00Speaker: north.
- 21:01Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 21:01Speaker 2: I think they hit St.
- 21:02Speaker 2: St.
- 21:03Speaker 2: Paul and then they, what is it West, I guess Head west towards Russia.
- 21:08Speaker: Hmm.
- 21:09Speaker 2: I mean, you're not that far from Russia out there.
- 21:10Speaker: I wonder if you can kill'em in Russia.
- 21:12Speaker: Probably.
- 21:12Speaker: Maybe.
- 21:13Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 21:13Speaker: It like Russia has everything, but I dunno if you want to go to Russia, but I think in Greenland, I believe only opened up to hunting them I think a couple years ago.
- 21:23Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 21:24Speaker: So they're pretTyce recent too.
- 21:25Speaker 2: And I think I, I don't know, we'd have to look it up, but I think the limit the limits there may be a little more liberal too than Alaska.
- 21:32Speaker: In Greenland.
- 21:32Speaker: Yeah.
- 21:33Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 21:33Speaker: Let's talk about that.
- 21:34Speaker: 'cause sometimes I think people.
- 21:37Speaker: I think when you go on these hunts, you're gonna shoot a bunch of birds.
- 21:40Speaker: And it's not, and it's not, it's not the fact, you, you can correct me if I'm wrong, but it's more, it's a trophy hunt.
- 21:46Speaker: You're collecting species.
- 21:47Speaker: You're not trying to just shoot a ton of birds every day.
- 21:49Speaker: It's like, I want birds for taxidermy.
- 21:52Speaker 2: Exactly.
- 21:53Speaker 2: So, so the, you remember
- 21:55Speaker: the limit?
- 21:56Speaker 2: Yeah, I do.
- 21:56Speaker 2: The limit was for four King Iers, um,
- 22:00Speaker: either sex
- 22:01Speaker 2: or either sex.
- 22:02Speaker 2: The, the guide I went with, and I, I'm sure we'll talk about him in a minute mm-hmm.
- 22:06Speaker 2: But, um, he encouraged us to shoot three, uh, Drakes in one, in one hand.
- 22:12Speaker 2: Okay.
- 22:12Speaker 2: They wanted to shoot at least one hand.
- 22:14Speaker: What is any reason behind that
- 22:16Speaker 2: or I, I don't know if it, I'm sure it's just preservation of the, of the, of the males.
- 22:21Speaker: Yeah.
- 22:22Speaker 2: You know, use part of your, your limit to shoot a female.
- 22:24Speaker 2: I,
- 22:24Speaker: yeah,
- 22:25Speaker 2: I'm not exactly sure.
- 22:26Speaker 2: I mean, I, I just,
- 22:27Speaker: yeah,
- 22:28Speaker 2: I just follow his
- 22:29Speaker: off what he said.
- 22:29Speaker 2: I wanted both anyways, it's, you know, and I got both in my library here, so.
- 22:33Speaker: Sure.
- 22:33Speaker: Yeah.
- 22:34Speaker: No, that's cool.
- 22:35Speaker: Tell us.
- 22:36Speaker: Uh, okay, so we talked about that.
- 22:39Speaker: Maybe let's talk about getting there.
- 22:41Speaker 2: Yeah, that's, you know, I'm glad, I'm glad you brought this up.
- 22:44Speaker 2: 'cause that's half the, that's
- 22:45Speaker: the adventure of Alaska, right?
- 22:46Speaker: It is.
- 22:47Speaker: Like, you didn't go moose hunting.
- 22:48Speaker: It took 10 planes to get moose hunting.
- 22:50Speaker 2: Right.
- 22:51Speaker: So,
- 22:51Speaker 2: so we, uh, we flew outta Salt Lake, obviously I did.
- 22:55Speaker 2: Mm-hmm.
- 22:56Speaker 2: Uh, flew through Seattle to Anchorage.
- 22:59Speaker: Okay.
- 22:59Speaker 2: Stayed in, uh, Anchorage that night.
- 23:03Speaker 2: And, um, the next day we flew to King Salmon, which is just a small, I'll call it an outpost.
- 23:11Speaker: Mm-hmm.
- 23:11Speaker 2: I guess
- 23:12Speaker: we, were you on a runway at this point still?
- 23:14Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 23:14Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 23:15Speaker: Okay.
- 23:15Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 23:15Speaker 2: Runways the whole way.
- 23:17Speaker 2: So, but you had, you, you have to stay in, uh,
- 23:21Speaker: how big was your plane from Anchorage to, um, king Salmon?
- 23:25Speaker 2: I'd call it a commuter.
- 23:26Speaker: Okay.
- 23:26You
- 23:27Speaker 2: know, probably hell.
- 23:27Speaker 2: 30
- 23:28Speaker: people.
- 23:28Speaker 2: Mm, 20.
- 23:30Speaker: Okay.
- 23:30Speaker 2: No more than 30, but I think it was probably about a little twin prop or something.
- 23:33Speaker 2: Little twin prop.
- 23:34Speaker 2: Little turbo prop.
- 23:35Speaker: Mm-hmm.
- 23:36Speaker 2: So, uh, we flew there and it was, by the way, it was all the, it was just all the people going on our hunt.
- 23:43Speaker: Mm-hmm.
- 23:44Speaker: Oh,
- 23:44Speaker 2: that's cool.
- 23:44Speaker 2: Um, and the only reason you, you fly to king salmon is to refuel.
- 23:49Speaker: Hmm.
- 23:49Speaker 2: I was talking to the pilot'cause we're just, you know, you got a D plane, we're standing out on the runway and
- 23:54Speaker: mm-hmm.
- 23:54Speaker 2: It's cold.
- 23:55Speaker 2: You know, they tell you dress in all your layers.
- 23:57Speaker 2: So everybody had their gear, gear on, including waiters.
- 24:00Speaker 2: By the way,
- 24:00Speaker: was it cold in the plane?
- 24:02Speaker 2: Mm, it wasn't too bad.
- 24:03Speaker: Okay.
- 24:03Speaker 2: I mean, it wasn't
- 24:04Speaker: just They knew you were gonna get outside.
- 24:05Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 24:06Speaker: Okay.
- 24:07Speaker 2: So, uh, anyways, I was talking to the pilot, well, they, they were refueling the, the plane.
- 24:12Speaker 2: And I said, man, I'm kind of surprised we have to, uh, refuel already.
- 24:17Speaker 2: And he said, well, he said, the reason we do it is.
- 24:22Speaker 2: We're never guaranteed what the, what the conditions are gonna be when we get to St.
- 24:26Speaker 2: Paul Island.
- 24:27Speaker 2: And he said, if we can't land and we have to turn around and come back, we don't have enough fuel unless we stop here and refuel.
- 24:37Speaker: That's good decision.
- 24:37Speaker 2: So really good to say.
- 24:39Speaker 2: I said, thanks for doing that for us.
- 24:41Speaker 2: So anyways, king Salmon, we refueled and then it, I don't know, Tyce three, four hour flight out into the Bering Sea.
- 24:51Speaker: Out across the ocean.
- 24:53Speaker 2: Dude, it just, I hope I don't go down.
- 24:54Speaker 2: Just, I, I mean it, it, it's
- 24:55Speaker: just water.
- 24:56Speaker 2: It's is water bearing sea cold water and
- 25:01Speaker: something you don't want to crash in.
- 25:02Speaker 2: No.
- 25:04Speaker 2: Then St.
- 25:04Speaker 2: St.
- 25:05Speaker 2: Paul came into view and it is a rock.
- 25:07Speaker 2: I mean, it's, there's not much to it.
- 25:10Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 25:11Speaker: Just rocks
- 25:12Speaker 2: the ocean.
- 25:12Speaker 2: It's just, it's just a, a lump.
- 25:13Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 25:14Speaker 2: It's just this little, a
- 25:14Speaker: volcanic rock or what is it?
- 25:16Speaker 2: I'm not even sure.
- 25:18Speaker 2: It didn't look like volcanic rock to me.
- 25:20Speaker: Hmm.
- 25:21Speaker: Gray, gray rock
- 25:22Speaker 2: gray.
- 25:23Speaker 2: Well, really dark.
- 25:24Speaker 2: I remember the beaches were like this really dark sand.
- 25:27Speaker: Seems like the pictures and stuff Yeah.
- 25:28Speaker: Are dark.
- 25:29Speaker: But,
- 25:29Speaker 2: um,
- 25:30Speaker: that's why I was wondering if it was volcanic or not.
- 25:32Speaker 2: So anyways, it's, it, I guess what I'm really saying is it's a, from Salt Lake CiTyce anyways, it's a full two day trip.
- 25:38Speaker: Yeah.
- 25:38Speaker: You know,
- 25:39Speaker 2: do
- 25:39Speaker: you
- 25:40Speaker 2: Here to
- 25:40Speaker: Anchorage.
- 25:40Speaker: Sorry.
- 25:40Speaker: How far from Anchorage to King Salmon was that?
- 25:43Speaker 2: Um,
- 25:44Speaker: do you remember roughly?
- 25:44Speaker: Um,
- 25:44Speaker 2: yeah.
- 25:45Speaker 2: 'cause I was back there this summer.
- 25:46Speaker 2: We, we flew through King Salmon to go on this back country fly fishing trip.
- 25:50Speaker 2: And from Anchorage to King Salmon, I'm gonna say a couple hours.
- 25:55Speaker: So you're another,
- 25:56Speaker 2: if I remember right.
- 25:57Speaker: So Anchorage, you're another five, six hours of
- 26:00Speaker 2: farming
- 26:00Speaker: in little planes.
- 26:01Speaker 2: Mm-hmm.
- 26:03Speaker: That's good to Yeah.
- 26:04Speaker: It's a good two day travel.
- 26:05Speaker: It's,
- 26:05Speaker 2: yeah, it's two and that's if everything goes well.
- 26:07Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 26:07Speaker 2: I mean it is all weather dependent.
- 26:10Speaker: Sure.
- 26:10Speaker 2: So, you know, I'd tell anyone going, I know everyone gets excited and you want to maximize every minute and you want to hunt every minute and you want to take every shooting opportuniTyce, but you're really kind of gotta just relax.
- 26:25Speaker: Yeah.
- 26:25Speaker 2: Know that there's, so
- 26:27it's
- 26:27Speaker: Alaska,
- 26:28Speaker 2: it's Alaska
- 26:29Speaker: in the winter time.
- 26:29Speaker 2: It's Alaska in the winter time.
- 26:31Speaker 2: And you know what, the stars have to line up a little bit.
- 26:34Speaker: Yeah.
- 26:34Speaker 2: I mean, um, we got there so they aligned for us, but
- 26:38Speaker: mm-hmm.
- 26:38Speaker 2: I know there are, there are, uh, groups that are delayed by a day and have to stay in Anchorage and, you know,'cause they can't land.
- 26:45Speaker 2: Um,
- 26:46Speaker: I could imagine even getting delayed more than a day
- 26:48Speaker 2: could
- 26:48Speaker: probably two, three days per storm.
- 26:50Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 26:51Speaker 2: I mean,
- 26:51Speaker: guys that go and hunt in the back country for moose or caribou, I mean, there's days the plane can't get in for.
- 26:57Speaker: Oh, three, five days.
- 26:59Speaker: You know?
- 26:59Speaker: I know it'd be a long time if it's a bad storm, you know, but
- 27:02Speaker 2: So the other thing I'll tell you, so that's all about kind of getting there.
- 27:06Speaker 2: Mm-hmm.
- 27:06Speaker 2: Um, it's a couple days to get there.
- 27:07Speaker 2: I think it'll be a couple days.
- 27:08Speaker 2: Anywhere from where you're, did
- 27:10Speaker: they have a weight limit?
- 27:12Speaker 2: Um,
- 27:13Speaker: it was a standard 50 pounds.
- 27:14Speaker 2: It, it's about 50 pounds of gear.
- 27:16Speaker: Okay.
- 27:16Speaker 2: If I remember.
- 27:17Speaker 2: I know that was, yeah, I think it's about 50 pounds of gear.
- 27:20Speaker: Oh, okay.
- 27:21Speaker 2: Um, but you know, so that's the kind of the logistics of getting there.
- 27:26Speaker 2: People should plan on a couple days there and probably a couple days home.
- 27:30Speaker 2: Um, and it's iffy.
- 27:32Speaker 2: It's weather dependent.
- 27:33Speaker: Mm-hmm.
- 27:33Speaker 2: So you get to know the people in your group on the flight to King Salmon, and then obviously from King Salmon and out to St.
- 27:40Speaker 2: Paul.
- 27:41Speaker 2: And where
- 27:41Speaker: is your group from?
- 27:42Speaker 2: Yeah, they were from all over.
- 27:44Speaker 2: It was a husband and wife and son from Indiana.
- 27:48Speaker: Okay.
- 27:49Speaker 2: Uh, I was shocked and impressed that he brought his wife.
- 27:53Speaker 2: Yeah, she did great.
- 27:54Speaker: Yeah,
- 27:55Speaker 2: she did great.
- 27:55Speaker: Does he like hunting or just kind of came along for
- 27:57Speaker 2: adventure?
- 27:57Speaker 2: He, I think he drags her around hunting all over the place.
- 28:00Speaker 2: Okay.
- 28:00Speaker 2: I mean, I got to know him pretTyce, pretTyce well later.
- 28:03Speaker 2: And, um, yeah, he, he gets around.
- 28:05Speaker 2: Oh,
- 28:05Speaker: okay.
- 28:06Speaker 2: So, uh, there was that group, uh, there were a couple, couple guys from, I think they were from Kentucky.
- 28:13Speaker 2: And I could tell this was a kind of a lifelong dream for them.
- 28:16Speaker 2: They probably probably saved for a while to go.
- 28:19Speaker 2: And then the best part of the group, this is hilarious.
- 28:23Speaker 2: There were four Amish guys from Ohio.
- 28:25Speaker: Okay.
- 28:26Speaker 2: Number one, I didn't know Amish people flew on airplanes.
- 28:29Speaker: Or hunt.
- 28:29Speaker 2: Or hunt.
- 28:31Speaker 2: And uh, they did they
- 28:33Speaker: have like Amish hats
- 28:34Speaker 2: and stuff?
- 28:34Speaker 2: Oh yeah.
- 28:34Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 28:34Speaker 2: They, they had their ha homemade Amish clothing on.
- 28:38Speaker: Really?
- 28:38Speaker 2: They had the Amish beards?
- 28:40Speaker 2: Um, no, they were Amish.
- 28:42Speaker: That's, I didn't, I didn't know they hunted either.
- 28:45Speaker 2: And
- 28:45Speaker: Interesting.
- 28:46Speaker 2: And, uh, they turned out to be, well one of them had left the, I guess they call it a communiTyce mm-hmm.
- 28:51Speaker 2: Had left the communiTyce.
- 28:52Speaker: Oh,
- 28:52Speaker 2: okay.
- 28:52Speaker 2: I guess there were three, not four.
- 28:54Speaker 2: And then the other two were still in the communiTyce.
- 28:56Speaker: Oh, okay.
- 28:57Speaker 2: And, uh, I, I talked to the one guy'cause he looked more.
- 29:03Speaker 2: Non hoish.
- 29:03Speaker 2: Non hoish.
- 29:04Speaker 2: Thank you.
- 29:05Speaker: Dressing
- 29:05Speaker 2: dressed up wise.
- 29:06Speaker 2: It's just the way he dressed his hair cut.
- 29:08Speaker 2: I'm like, dude, what?
- 29:08Speaker 2: You're a little different.
- 29:09Speaker 2: He goes, yeah, I left the communiTyce.
- 29:11Speaker 2: He goes, I'm still welcome.
- 29:13Speaker 2: You know?
- 29:13Speaker 2: It wasn't like I was ostracized.
- 29:14Speaker 2: I've just chosen a different path.
- 29:16Speaker 2: And, but the other two guys,
- 29:18Speaker: they were still,
- 29:18Speaker 2: they were still very hoish.
- 29:19Speaker 2: Still
- 29:19Speaker: in it.
- 29:20Speaker: Yeah.
- 29:20Speaker 2: And, um,
- 29:22Speaker: sure they were good guys.
- 29:23Speaker 2: I'm killing myself.
- 29:23Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 29:24Speaker 2: In fact, one of them was my roommate and he was a mountain.
- 29:27Speaker 2: I mean, I'm six two.
- 29:28Speaker: Mm-hmm.
- 29:29Speaker 2: He had to be six five and his hands were just, he's just this giant man.
- 29:36Speaker: So the barn raising, he was like the main,
- 29:38Speaker 2: he was the main guy.
- 29:39Speaker 2: I'm sure he was the guy.
- 29:41Speaker 2: And, uh, I mean, I won't get into, I don't wanna throw anybody under the bus, but let's just say he slipped outside and, uh, so every day, multiple times to get fresh air.
- 29:52Speaker 2: And, um, and, uh, quench his thirst.
- 29:56Speaker 2: He, he, he was in enjoying himself.
- 29:58Speaker 2: Cool.
- 29:58Speaker 2: Really cool guy though.
- 29:59Speaker 2: Super
- 29:59Speaker: cool
- 30:00Speaker 2: guy.
- 30:00Speaker: Cool.
- 30:01Speaker: Sounds like a good mixture of people.
- 30:03Speaker: You guys had, was that everyone or was there somewhere?
- 30:05Speaker 2: Yep.
- 30:05Speaker 2: No, that, I think that was about everyone.
- 30:07Speaker: Okay.
- 30:08Speaker 2: There was the family, the guys from Kentucky.
- 30:11Speaker: Tell us how longish
- 30:12Speaker 2: guys, me,
- 30:13Speaker: how long the hunts usually are for, kind of give us a ballpark idea what it would cost someone to go on and we can refer to people the website.
- 30:21Speaker: They can see that
- 30:22Speaker 2: too.
- 30:22Speaker 2: Yeah, I would just do that ties on the cost.
- 30:24Speaker 2: 'cause
- 30:24Speaker: I think they're, I think they're around four or five grand.
- 30:27Speaker: Does that about sound about right?
- 30:28Speaker 2: When I, yeah, when I went.
- 30:29Speaker 2: That sounds about right.
- 30:30Speaker: I know you guys can check
- 30:31Speaker 2: and then, I mean, you got, you got flights, you got put on top of that and
- 30:35Speaker: Sure.
- 30:35Speaker: Yeah.
- 30:35Speaker 2: You know,
- 30:36Speaker: I'm just talking what?
- 30:36Speaker: The outfitter
- 30:37Speaker 2: Oh yeah.
- 30:38Speaker 2: What he charges.
- 30:38Speaker: What they charge.
- 30:39Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 30:40Speaker: Yeah.
- 30:40Speaker 2: Um, and, and by the way, just be before we get into the hunting, uh, so, so now you're on St.
- 30:46Speaker 2: St.
- 30:47Speaker 2: Paul Island.
- 30:47Speaker: Yeah.
- 30:48Speaker 2: And um, again, it's a rock in the middle of the bearing sea.
- 30:52Speaker 2: Um, at one point it was a Russian outpost.
- 30:56Speaker 2: Oh, really?
- 30:56Speaker 2: Really?
- 30:56Speaker 2: So there's, there's fur seals Wales.
- 31:00Speaker 2: It's, it was mainly fur seals.
- 31:01Speaker 2: They were after though.
- 31:02Speaker: Okay.
- 31:03Speaker 2: Um, and then at, I guess
- 31:07Speaker: I'm looking up on my phone now.
- 31:08Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 31:08Speaker 2: I guess when, when the US bought Alaska, I'm sure St.
- 31:11Speaker 2: St.
- 31:11Speaker 2: Paul came with it.
- 31:13Speaker 2: So the, so what's there, the infrastructure that's there is
- 31:17Speaker: old Russian
- 31:17Speaker 2: stuff.
- 31:18Speaker 2: Old Russian stuff,
- 31:19Speaker: really?
- 31:19Speaker 2: And I mean, like, t and there's like 300 people that live there.
- 31:24Speaker 2: I don't know what they do.
- 31:26Speaker: Hmm.
- 31:26Speaker 2: So, and they're all indigenous people.
- 31:29Speaker 2: So there's, there's a little communiTyce with some streets, a little tiny grocery store.
- 31:34Speaker 2: You know.
- 31:34Speaker 2: Mm-hmm.
- 31:34Speaker 2: Five bars.
- 31:36Speaker 2: No, I'm kidding.
- 31:37Speaker 2: There was a bar though.
- 31:39Speaker 2: There was
- 31:39Speaker: one bar at least.
- 31:40Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 31:41Speaker: Oh, in a place?
- 31:41Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 31:41Speaker: There,
- 31:42Speaker 2: there's a little histor
- 31:43Speaker: drink away.
- 31:43Speaker 2: There's a little historical socieTyce.
- 31:45Speaker 2: I went toured.
- 31:46Speaker: Mm-hmm.
- 31:46Speaker 2: Um, one afternoon we finished, we finished hunting early and uh, that was kind of cool.
- 31:51Speaker 2: That's where I learned a little bit of the history and about the first seals and in fact, around the island, there are these, uh, kind of pillars, these, these towers.
- 32:00Speaker 2: And I, I didn't know what they were for.
- 32:02Speaker 2: I asked the guy and they said, oh, those are the towers.
- 32:04Speaker 2: The shooters would stand in.
- 32:06Speaker 2: The snipers would stand in to shoot these first seals.
- 32:09Speaker: Oh, really?
- 32:10Speaker 2: One time at one point they were, uh, shooting, I don't know, four or 5,000 seals a day.
- 32:15Speaker: Holy
- 32:16Speaker 2: cow.
- 32:16Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 32:16Speaker 2: And harvesting them.
- 32:17Speaker: Did you see any seals there?
- 32:19Speaker 2: Uh, yeah.
- 32:19Speaker 2: We saw fur seals, saw a lot of, a lot of fur seals.
- 32:22Speaker 2: Saw an orca carcass on the beach.
- 32:24Speaker: Wow.
- 32:25Speaker 2: That was pretTyce cool.
- 32:26Speaker: That is cool.
- 32:26Speaker 2: Um, in fact, was it
- 32:28Speaker: pretTyce fresh?
- 32:29Speaker 2: Mmm.
- 32:30Speaker: Mean fresh enough?
- 32:31Speaker 2: No, it was fresh enough.
- 32:32Speaker 2: I mean, there's flash and meat.
- 32:33Speaker 2: It stunk like a
- 32:34Speaker: Yeah,
- 32:35Speaker 2: I bet it didn't smell good.
- 32:36Speaker 2: Um, there's also a, in the marina there, there, they used to process crabs there.
- 32:42Speaker 2: So the, um, that, uh, the show Deadliest catch.
- 32:46Speaker: Mm-hmm.
- 32:48Speaker 2: They would motor into, uh, that area, St.
- 32:50Speaker 2: Paul and drop, drop off all their, their load for to, to be processed.
- 32:55Speaker 2: That's
- 32:55Speaker: Did you eat a bunch of king crab when you were there?
- 32:57Speaker 2: No.
- 32:58Speaker 2: No, we didn't
- 32:59Speaker: really,
- 32:59Speaker 2: that, that industry's really shut down.
- 33:00Speaker 2: I mean, if you follow that, I, I'm not even sure there's a season right now.
- 33:04Speaker 2: Oh really?
- 33:04Speaker 2: I can't speak to it.
- 33:05Speaker 2: But the population,
- 33:07Speaker: I didn't know that,
- 33:07Speaker 2: of those crabs has dropped twice.
- 33:09Speaker 2: It's like 90%.
- 33:11Speaker 2: I mean, it's a real issue.
- 33:12Speaker: Wow.
- 33:12Speaker 2: So
- 33:13Speaker: is Deadliest catch not happening anymore?
- 33:15Speaker: The mo the showed you?
- 33:16Speaker 2: I
- 33:16Speaker: don't,
- 33:16Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 33:17Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 33:18Speaker: Interesting.
- 33:20Speaker: Hmm.
- 33:21Speaker 2: So anyways, that's just a little bit of, it's Russian, it's it, the history is Russian.
- 33:26Speaker: What were the cars like?
- 33:27Speaker: Were they all Russian?
- 33:28Speaker: Were they Russian and stuff, or?
- 33:29Speaker 2: No, but uh, sometimes
- 33:31Speaker: you get those old, like old cool Russian, like land rovers or I don't know,
- 33:35Speaker 2: whatever.
- 33:35Speaker 2: This is.
- 33:36Speaker 2: This, I have a funny answer for you.
- 33:37Speaker 2: It's true.
- 33:38Speaker: Oh, is this,
- 33:39Speaker 2: yeah.
- 33:39Speaker 2: Tell me.
- 33:40Speaker 2: I think I remember the details.
- 33:41Speaker 2: So we land, we land, right?
- 33:43Speaker 2: It was a runway.
- 33:45Speaker: Yeah.
- 33:46Speaker 2: There's no terminal or anything.
- 33:47Speaker 2: It's just a runway.
- 33:49Speaker 2: And this ambulance pulls up to the plane.
- 33:53Speaker: I'm sure I remember this.
- 33:53Speaker: Yeah.
- 33:54Speaker: And
- 33:54Speaker 2: I'm like, what is this ambulance pulling up to the plane for?
- 33:57Speaker 2: Well.
- 33:58Speaker 2: The guides van that he picks his drops his hunters off, and then when they're leaving and then picks'em up, is this old ambulance,
- 34:06Speaker: did he have chairs like benches
- 34:08Speaker 2: in the back?
- 34:08Speaker 2: Yeah, he kind of reconfigured the back.
- 34:10Speaker 2: You could still put like a gurney in it if you, I don't know why you would, but Yeah.
- 34:14Speaker 2: So there's, we're on this rock in the middle of the bearing sea, jumping into an ambulance.
- 34:19Speaker: That's
- 34:19Speaker 2: funny.
- 34:19Speaker 2: And the group that was leaving, you know, the ambulance pulled up, they all got out.
- 34:23Speaker: Mm-hmm.
- 34:24Speaker 2: cause they were waiting for us to get off the plane so they could get on.
- 34:27Speaker: It's like the short bus.
- 34:28Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 34:28Speaker 2: We, we all piled into the back of the ambulance and off We Did
- 34:33Speaker: all of you fit in there?
- 34:34Speaker 2: We did.
- 34:35Speaker 2: We, we did
- 34:35Speaker: with
- 34:36Speaker 2: your gear.
- 34:36Speaker 2: And they had a separate truck for the gear.
- 34:38Speaker: Oh, okay.
- 34:38Speaker 2: They threw all the gear in the back of the
- 34:39Speaker: truck.
- 34:39Speaker: So that's pretTyce, that's pretTyce impressive.
- 34:40Speaker: They could fit y'all in there.
- 34:41Speaker 2: So, uh, so anyways, we literally did a little tour.
- 34:46Speaker 2: I put quotes around tour.
- 34:47Speaker 2: There's not much the tour.
- 34:48Speaker: Mm-hmm.
- 34:49Speaker 2: Uh, and then went.
- 34:51Speaker 2: You know, on the way to the, the, uh, the lodge, I put quotes around lodge too.
- 34:55Speaker: Okay.
- 34:55Speaker 2: Every, like I said, everything's a hundred years old and nothing works over there.
- 34:59Speaker: Okay.
- 34:59Speaker 2: So anyways, that's a little bit of the logistics of getting there and, and kind of a visual.
- 35:05Speaker 2: I try to create a visual.
- 35:06Speaker 2: What is it like for you?
- 35:07Speaker: So tell me how, how, what do you, how big is the island?
- 35:11Speaker: Do you remember?
- 35:12Speaker: Does it seem small?
- 35:14Speaker: Is it,
- 35:14Speaker 2: oh, you could drive around this thing in
- 35:16Speaker: how long?
- 35:16Speaker: Yeah.
- 35:17Speaker 2: An hour maybe.
- 35:18Speaker 2: Okay.
- 35:18Speaker 2: I mean, it's not,
- 35:19Speaker: it's not big, but it's not, it's not a teeny thing then, but
- 35:23Speaker 2: No, I mean, it's big enough for a, a runway.
- 35:25Speaker 2: There's a small communiTyce.
- 35:27Speaker 2: There's kinda big open beaches.
- 35:29Speaker 2: There's part of the island's just this big long sandbar.
- 35:33Speaker 2: Um, you know, I, I, I don't think that part of the island's inhabitable or anything.
- 35:39Speaker: I guess I could look it up on my phone how big it is, but, so tell, um.
- 35:44Speaker: How was, what was the accommodations just an old hotel that they had
- 35:47Speaker 2: there or what
- 35:48Speaker: was that?
- 35:48Speaker 2: It was, I think it was an old Russian, um, like governmental building at one point.
- 35:53Speaker 2: I think it was the history of it.
- 35:55Speaker 2: Uh, and they've obviously adapted it to, to how, I don't even wanna call it a lodge and I'm not disparaging it'cause you gotta know it,
- 36:04Speaker: but this is part of the adventure.
- 36:05Speaker 2: It is.
- 36:05Speaker 2: But you,
- 36:05Speaker: I mean, you don't show up now
- 36:06Speaker 2: this when you realize where this, I want everybody listening to this to go look on a map on where this island is.
- 36:12Speaker 2: 'cause you're gonna go, oh crap.
- 36:14Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 36:14Speaker 2: It's a rock in the middle of the burying sea.
- 36:16Speaker: Yeah.
- 36:17Speaker 2: And uh,
- 36:17Speaker: the only reason you'd go there is to go kill.
- 36:20Speaker 2: I went there to kill iers.
- 36:21Speaker 2: I didn't care if I slept on a mattress in a sleeping bag.
- 36:25Speaker 2: So I had, there was no expectations, there was no bar set on what the accommodations or food should be like for that matter.
- 36:32Speaker 2: I didn't care.
- 36:33Speaker: Yeah.
- 36:34Speaker 2: Uh, which I'm glad I didn't care.
- 36:35Speaker 2: 'cause everything's run down.
- 36:37Speaker 2: I mean, I think we had one working bathroom.
- 36:40Speaker 2: Have
- 36:40Speaker: hot water.
- 36:41Speaker 2: There were two bath, hot,
- 36:42Speaker: hot water, hot showers,
- 36:44Speaker 2: warm, hot showers.
- 36:45Speaker 2: One day we didn't, the day the wind was so bad we, we lost the, uh, boiler.
- 36:50Speaker: Hmm.
- 36:50Speaker 2: So, uh, the lodge got cold and we had nowhere to go.
- 36:54Speaker 2: So we just all bundled up.
- 36:55Speaker 2: Played, played cards, and, mm-hmm.
- 36:58Speaker 2: And, and chatted.
- 36:59Speaker 2: Um, I take that back.
- 37:01Speaker 2: There were two showers.
- 37:02Speaker 2: There was one toilet.
- 37:03Speaker: Mm-hmm.
- 37:04Speaker 2: Only one of the toilets worked.
- 37:05Speaker: What was food like?
- 37:06Speaker: What'd they feed you?
- 37:07Speaker 2: It was all homemade.
- 37:08Speaker 2: So the, the guide's wife and daughter were there.
- 37:11Speaker 2: Mm-hmm.
- 37:11Speaker 2: And, uh, they made us hot meals.
- 37:13Speaker 2: We had, you know, hot breakfast in the morning and hot dinner.
- 37:16Speaker 2: It was always good.
- 37:17Speaker: Mm-hmm.
- 37:17Speaker 2: Homemade, you know, it wasn't like gourmet.
- 37:20Speaker 2: You're like, you're going to a restaurant.
- 37:21Speaker 2: But, um,
- 37:23Speaker: did you guys hunt during the day?
- 37:24Speaker: Did they, did you have lunch or did they feed you out there had snacks?
- 37:27Speaker 2: We did.
- 37:27Speaker 2: We did.
- 37:27Speaker 2: No, it really wasn't a situation where you'd go out and come back and go out again.
- 37:32Speaker: You go out and get your birds for the day and come back
- 37:34Speaker 2: and then, and then come back.
- 37:36Speaker: Okay.
- 37:36Speaker: Is it usually kind of a half day hunt?
- 37:37Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 37:38Speaker: Kind of noonish?
- 37:38Speaker 2: Yep, exactly.
- 37:40Speaker: Okay.
- 37:40Speaker 2: So, um, and then you spend, you can sleep.
- 37:44Speaker 2: Um, you know, I did some workwise out there.
- 37:46Speaker 2: I did some reading, and you just kinda relax.
- 37:49Speaker 2: They, and, and they'll take, I mean, they took, we went beach combing one day.
- 37:53Speaker 2: People just, there's all kinds of stuff that washes up on that.
- 37:57Speaker: Like, what are people looking for?
- 37:58Speaker: Like, they, they changed
- 37:59Speaker 2: one of the guys, the glass balls stuff, the guy, the, yeah.
- 38:01Speaker 2: The one guy's wife found a really cool buoy with a kind of mesh net around it.
- 38:07Speaker: Mm-hmm.
- 38:08Speaker 2: That, uh, they ended up taking back for a decoration.
- 38:11Speaker: Mm-hmm.
- 38:11Speaker 2: Um, I brought some stuff back from the island to put on the base of my, my birds and my library.
- 38:17Speaker 2: So, so there was, you know, stuff from, from the island.
- 38:22Speaker: Did those rocks from
- 38:23Speaker 2: No, no, I'm,
- 38:25Speaker: no,
- 38:25Speaker 2: actually, you know, I don't.
- 38:27Speaker: Know if it made it on there.
- 38:28Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 38:29Speaker 2: I brought some netting back.
- 38:30Speaker 2: There's all kinds of netting and stuff that you would see
- 38:32Speaker: fisherman's net.
- 38:33Speaker 2: Yeah, exactly.
- 38:34Speaker: Took come off.
- 38:34Speaker: Yeah.
- 38:35Speaker 2: But it's cool stuff.
- 38:37Speaker 2: Like I said, we saw that orca and pushed a lot of, uh, fur seals around.
- 38:43Speaker: One time when I was in Alaska, kind of a funny story.
- 38:45Speaker: There was a gray whale that washed up on a beach in Alaska and we were up there Bear hunting.
- 38:50Speaker: Or bear hunting.
- 38:51Speaker: Yeah.
- 38:51Speaker: Bear hunting in the spring in the bay, just outside of Anchorage.
- 38:55Speaker: And we're like, oh, that, that's cool.
- 38:56Speaker: Let's go check out that whale.
- 38:57Speaker: So we go over there and we decide to stand on it and get some pictures standing on this great whale.
- 39:04Speaker: Well anyways, we get back to the car and we're just like, what is that smell?
- 39:09Speaker: You know, you could tell the oil stunk, but anyways, those things have so much oil.
- 39:13Speaker: Oil, it like stuck to your boots.
- 39:15Speaker 2: Right.
- 39:16Speaker: And you didn't realize, like even when you got back to the car, it just smelled for a days.
- 39:21Speaker: Right.
- 39:21Speaker: Like oil, because that oil just stayed on.
- 39:24Speaker: Boots.
- 39:24Speaker: Right.
- 39:25Speaker: I thought that was kind of a funny, so I think it whales on a beach I can relate to.
- 39:29Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 39:29Speaker 2: No, that orca
- 39:29Speaker: don't stand on
- 39:30Speaker 2: em.
- 39:30Speaker 2: No, that orcas, that orcas stunk too.
- 39:33Speaker 2: I don't know how long it had been there, but it was, it was stinky.
- 39:37Speaker: I think a lot of times they'd dynamite those to like get rid of em.
- 39:40Speaker: Blown up.
- 39:40Speaker: Blown up to the seagulls, eat'em or whatever, you know?
- 39:43Speaker: Okay.
- 39:43Speaker: So I'm looking on here.
- 39:44Speaker: St.
- 39:44Speaker: Paul Island is 13 miles.
- 39:47Speaker: It says length 13 miles and width is seven miles.
- 39:50Speaker 2: Yeah, that sounds about right.
- 39:52Speaker: Population 400.
- 39:53Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 39:54Speaker: So it's pretTyce, it's fairly round.
- 39:56Speaker: It looks like there's kind of a strip that goes out on, there's
- 39:59Speaker 2: a, there's a tail on it.
- 40:00Speaker 2: That's that st That's that real sandy area.
- 40:03Speaker: Did you guys, okay, let's talk about.
- 40:06Speaker: I kind of think we, let's talk about hunting.
- 40:07Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 40:08Speaker: So tell us what you guys did, how you hunted, what they did to get'em in.
- 40:12Speaker 2: Yeah, so we, we hunted out
- 40:13Speaker: bird numbers.
- 40:14Speaker 2: We hunted out of boats and they had two kinds of boats.
- 40:17Speaker 2: Uh, if you're familiar with what's called a banks boat
- 40:20Speaker: mm-hmm.
- 40:20Speaker 2: Which is, uh, more of a hard sided kind of sturdy boat.
- 40:24Speaker: Okay.
- 40:24Speaker 2: We could get, uh, it's like
- 40:25Speaker: aluminum boat mm-hmm.
- 40:27Speaker: Tycepe thing.
- 40:27Speaker: Okay.
- 40:27Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 40:28Speaker 2: And it's got kind of a, I'll call it a shell up over the top that shields
- 40:33Speaker: you from the ocean a little bit.
- 40:35Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 40:35Speaker 2: And, and it's also, um, um, you know, allows you to hide from the birds.
- 40:41Speaker: Is it kind of like your new boat?
- 40:42Speaker: Mm-hmm.
- 40:43Speaker 2: Kind of,
- 40:43Speaker: yeah.
- 40:43Speaker: A shield like that.
- 40:44Speaker 2: Yep.
- 40:44Speaker 2: Mm-hmm.
- 40:45Speaker 2: So, um, they had two of those banks, boats and then they had two, um, inflatable, um, I just went blank.
- 40:54Speaker 2: Um,
- 40:55Speaker: those zodiacs,
- 40:55Speaker 2: zodiac boats.
- 40:57Speaker: Okay.
- 40:58Speaker 2: And, uh,
- 40:59Speaker: were those sketchy?
- 41:01Speaker 2: Yeah, everything was sketchy.
- 41:02Speaker 2: Was sketchy, but yeah,
- 41:05Speaker: the, the water's rough.
- 41:06Speaker: I
- 41:06Speaker 2: felt
- 41:06Speaker: big white caps and,
- 41:08Speaker 2: um,
- 41:08Speaker: or not,
- 41:09Speaker 2: you know what, not, there wasn't so many, so much as white caps.
- 41:13Speaker 2: I mean,'cause you're, you're past the break.
- 41:15Speaker: Oh, you
- 41:15Speaker 2: are.
- 41:15Speaker 2: But there's swells.
- 41:16Speaker 2: I mean, I don't think there, I mean, on the smoothest day there's probably eight foot swells.
- 41:22Speaker: Okay.
- 41:22Speaker 2: In
- 41:22Speaker: fact, how far out from the shore are you?
- 41:24Speaker 2: Quarter of a mile.
- 41:25Speaker: Oh wow.
- 41:26Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 41:26Speaker 2: I mean, you can still see the island off in the distance, but you're out there quite a ways.
- 41:30Speaker: So the birds feeding out there.
- 41:32Speaker: Then
- 41:33Speaker 2: how
- 41:33Speaker: deeps
- 41:33Speaker 2: that water?
- 41:33Speaker 2: They're, they're transitioning, they're transitioning from an area they call the washing machine.
- 41:39Speaker: Okay.
- 41:39Speaker 2: Which you couldn't get into there.
- 41:41Speaker 2: You couldn't take a boat in there.
- 41:42Speaker 2: It's just, there's
- 41:43Speaker: nasTyce.
- 41:44Speaker 2: It's just nasTyce.
- 41:45Speaker 2: Which is why they call it the, the washing machine.
- 41:47Speaker: Okay.
- 41:47Speaker 2: I, I guess that's just, uh, probably the reef system that's out there and the depth of the water.
- 41:53Speaker 2: And you know how the.
- 41:55Speaker 2: Ocean current comes in, I don't know, I'm not an expert on that stuff, but we, we could watch it from a distance and
- 42:01Speaker: Oh, you could see,
- 42:02Speaker 2: oh yeah, we, we kind of, we kind of motored over there close to it and you could just see it was rough.
- 42:07Speaker 2: I mean, you didn't want to be in that area, but, but anyways, they're, so the birds are transitioning from that area.
- 42:14Speaker 2: Mm-hmm.
- 42:15Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 42:15Speaker 2: Back to a roosting ground or, uh, an area where they can rust or loaf or what.
- 42:20Speaker: Hmm.
- 42:21Speaker 2: But we would be in that area, that transition area.
- 42:24Speaker: Okay.
- 42:25Speaker 2: Um, on in the boats.
- 42:27Speaker 2: And by the way, the guy, so
- 42:28Speaker: you're past shooting him as they're,
- 42:30Speaker 2: you pass, shoot,
- 42:31Speaker: moving somewhere
- 42:32Speaker 2: your past shooting.
- 42:33Speaker 2: Okay.
- 42:33Speaker 2: And let me just say, uh, so I use Dilution Island Outfitters.
- 42:37Speaker: Mm-hmm.
- 42:37Speaker 2: Um, number one above everything.
- 42:42Speaker 2: In fact, number one, two, and three is safeTyce.
- 42:44Speaker: Mm-hmm.
- 42:44Speaker 2: Um, just'cause the margin of air is zero with
- 42:47Speaker: them.
- 42:47Speaker: Or
- 42:48Speaker 2: no hunting in those conditions?
- 42:50Speaker: Yeah.
- 42:50Speaker: Yeah.
- 42:50Speaker 2: The margin of air is zero.
- 42:52Speaker 2: Sure.
- 42:52Speaker 2: So, so they, uh, I mean, they're in constant radio contact, you know,'cause there's four boats out.
- 42:58Speaker 2: You go out together, you go to different spots.
- 43:00Speaker: Oh, okay.
- 43:01Speaker 2: So the, if there ever was an issue, how
- 43:03Speaker: many people per boat?
- 43:04Speaker: Four.
- 43:04Speaker: Three?
- 43:05Speaker 2: Well, the zodiacs, you could put two people per boat in the, um, the big banks boats.
- 43:09Speaker 2: It was, I think it was, was it three or four?
- 43:12Speaker 2: Three or four.
- 43:13Speaker: Okay.
- 43:14Speaker 2: So, um, you're out there together, they're in radio contact.
- 43:18Speaker 2: I could see one or two of the other boats from time to time.
- 43:21Speaker 2: But you're, you're spread out enough.
- 43:23Speaker 2: Mm-hmm.
- 43:23Speaker 2: You're not on top of each other.
- 43:24Speaker: Yeah.
- 43:25Speaker 2: So I just, I wanted to mention that,'cause that's important.
- 43:27Speaker 2: I mean, this is really a, a, a Tycepe of hunt where there's not a lot of margin for air.
- 43:32Speaker: Yeah.
- 43:32Speaker: Yeah.
- 43:33Speaker 2: If I,
- 43:34Speaker: if you go over,
- 43:35Speaker 2: if you go over I, I, I think it'd be very difficult.
- 43:37Speaker: You're gonna be cold
- 43:40Speaker 2: or dead, maybe forever.
- 43:41Speaker 2: Cold forever.
- 43:42Speaker: You might have a watery cold grave.
- 43:44Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 43:45Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 43:46Speaker 2: They may pull you out.
- 43:47Speaker 2: I don't,
- 43:47Speaker: I assume they have life jackets and all that
- 43:49Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 43:49Speaker: Stuff.
- 43:49Speaker 2: Oh yeah.
- 43:50Speaker 2: Like I said, it's,
- 43:51Speaker: it would suck to go overboard.
- 43:52Speaker 2: Right?
- 43:52Speaker: Yeah.
- 43:53Speaker 2: But, um, yeah, so it's pass shooting and you're hitting them in a transition area.
- 43:57Speaker 2: It's a big area.
- 43:59Speaker 2: Um, and you do use decoys.
- 44:02Speaker: Okay.
- 44:02Speaker 2: Um, they're on a big, long rope,
- 44:06Speaker: just kind of in a line,
- 44:07Speaker 2: in a line, just dragging them behind the boat.
- 44:09Speaker 2: They never turn the motors off on those boats.
- 44:11Speaker 2: Never.
- 44:12Speaker 2: They're always
- 44:12Speaker: really
- 44:13Speaker 2: on and, and in gear.
- 44:14Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 44:15Speaker: Wow.
- 44:16Speaker: I never thought of, I didn't think about that.
- 44:17Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 44:18Speaker 2: No, it's, uh, well, you're not anchored, right.
- 44:20Speaker 2: I, in fact, I, I don't know how deep the water we were in is, but
- 44:24Speaker: Hmm.
- 44:24Speaker 2: It's not like hunting out on the great lake.
- 44:26Speaker 2: Right.
- 44:26Speaker 2: You're
- 44:27Speaker: so, it's just like in a slow, I like it's
- 44:28Speaker 2: just in a slow idle.
- 44:30Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 44:31Speaker: Interesting.
- 44:31Speaker: I thought you, because I thought they, you'd anchor out.
- 44:34Speaker 2: No.
- 44:34Speaker 2: Throw
- 44:34Speaker: the decoys
- 44:35Speaker 2: out.
- 44:35Speaker 2: No, you're, you're just drifting.
- 44:37Speaker: Hmm.
- 44:37Speaker 2: Um, but you know, if, again, all these swells are coming in, I mean, you've got, he's gotta be able to move and
- 44:43Speaker: birds obviously don't care about the sound of
- 44:45Speaker 2: the
- 44:45Speaker: motor.
- 44:45Speaker: No.
- 44:45Speaker 2: And well, it's, I think it's so big and vast out there, and there's so much going on.
- 44:49Speaker 2: I'm not even sure they hear the motor,
- 44:51Speaker: they hear.
- 44:51Speaker: It's just kind of,
- 44:52Speaker 2: yeah.
- 44:52Speaker 2: And, and it's not like it's flat.
- 44:54Speaker 2: I mean, like, I like, so I'll come back to these, these swells, uh, for a minute.
- 44:58Speaker 2: It's, it's, it's important because it's part of the hunt.
- 45:02Speaker: Mm-hmm.
- 45:03Speaker 2: So as you peak, well, as you drop into a trough mm-hmm.
- 45:07Speaker 2: You know, between the one swell and the next one, you're hidden.
- 45:10Speaker: Mm-hmm.
- 45:11Speaker 2: Right.
- 45:11Speaker 2: You're down in this valley.
- 45:13Speaker 2: 10, 12 feet sometimes.
- 45:14Speaker: Wow.
- 45:15Speaker 2: And then as you come back up the backside of the next swell and you hit the peak of it, there's, you gotta be on the ready,
- 45:22Speaker: huh?
- 45:22Speaker 2: Well, you hope they're doing the same thing.
- 45:24Speaker 2: 'cause they're using the same swells to do the same thing.
- 45:27Speaker 2: They'll get down in the trough, so you won't be involved.
- 45:29Speaker 2: See'em fall
- 45:29Speaker: around.
- 45:29Speaker: They're flying right on the deck of the road.
- 45:31Speaker 2: Right.
- 45:31Speaker 2: And then they'll, all of a, a sudden you'll see'em come up over the top of the next swell and you it hopefully.
- 45:37Speaker: So do you generally see'em kind of coming and then you time it?
- 45:40Speaker: You
- 45:40Speaker 2: can.
- 45:41Speaker 2: Okay.
- 45:41Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 45:41Speaker: Okay.
- 45:42Speaker 2: But it's so, you know, that's kind of fun though.
- 45:43Speaker 2: Can you visualize what I'm talking about?
- 45:45Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 45:45Speaker 2: It's not like you're sitting in a blind in the marsh.
- 45:47Speaker 2: I mean, it's a chest match.
- 45:49I've
- 45:49Speaker: been on the ocean, so, I mean on the ocean psych.
- 45:51Speaker: Yeah.
- 45:52Speaker: I understand.
- 45:52Speaker: I guess if people haven't understand swells and I could see, but that makes sense.
- 45:57Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 45:58Speaker 2: A lot.
- 45:58Speaker 2: A lot of moving pieces for sure.
- 45:59Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 46:00Speaker: Hmm.
- 46:01Speaker: So did they decoy or did the decoys just kind of draw, suck
- 46:04Speaker 2: them towards
- 46:04Speaker: you?
- 46:04Speaker 2: Just suck'em in,
- 46:05Speaker: kind of give'em something to look
- 46:06Speaker 2: at
- 46:06Speaker: and like, oh,
- 46:07Speaker 2: I think it's a reference.
- 46:08Speaker 2: So it's like, hey, let's, let's swing past there.
- 46:11Speaker 2: So, I mean, we had plenTyce of shooting opportunities.
- 46:13Speaker 2: It's not like you're, there are a lot of birds out there.
- 46:17Speaker 2: Oh, you'll see, oh, there's a group.
- 46:18Speaker 2: There's a group.
- 46:19Speaker 2: You know, a lot of'em aren't,
- 46:21Speaker: were they always moving?
- 46:22Speaker: It seemed like
- 46:22Speaker 2: always.
- 46:23Speaker: Okay.
- 46:23Speaker 2: Always moving.
- 46:24Speaker 2: That's cool.
- 46:24Speaker 2: We'd see'em on the water.
- 46:26Speaker: Yeah,
- 46:26Speaker 2: we would see'em on the water too.
- 46:27Speaker 2: You'd see'em kind of raft up a little bit in small groups.
- 46:29Speaker 2: But I mean, you can never get close to those birds, but that's awesome.
- 46:33Speaker 2: You'd see'em on the water.
- 46:35Speaker: Did they make any, what did they sound like when they're any sounds?
- 46:38Speaker 2: No, I don't know.
- 46:39Speaker 2: I have no idea.
- 46:40Speaker 2: Didn't hear any,
- 46:41Speaker: you don't remember hearing any
- 46:42Speaker 2: call
- 46:42Speaker: calling or,
- 46:43Speaker 2: no, there was, there was no calling.
- 46:45Speaker 2: It was all, it was all
- 46:46Speaker: motor was too loud.
- 46:47Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 46:47Speaker 2: That maybe, no, it was all visual.
- 46:51Speaker 2: And then, you know, when you'd shoot one, I mean, this is where the guy, the value of the guides.
- 46:55Speaker 2: Well, the guides are valuable everywhere Sure.
- 46:58Speaker 2: In all parts of the hunt.
- 46:59Speaker 2: But, um, you gotta get on that bird.
- 47:01Speaker: Mm-hmm.
- 47:02Speaker 2: Because you're in the ocean.
- 47:04Speaker 2: It just
- 47:05Speaker: starts going
- 47:05Speaker 2: where you think it, it hit is it's not gonna be there.
- 47:08Speaker 2: So you gotta know how the currents work.
- 47:10Speaker 2: And these swells and, I mean, half the time I'm like, where's this guy going?
- 47:15Speaker 2: That bird wasn't over here.
- 47:16Speaker 2: It was way over.
- 47:17Speaker 2: And we'd find it.
- 47:18Speaker: Yeah.
- 47:19Speaker: So, so the swells are ripping out there.
- 47:21Speaker: Yeah.
- 47:21Speaker: The tide.
- 47:22Speaker: The tide is moving.
- 47:22Speaker 2: It's
- 47:23Speaker: a lot.
- 47:23Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 47:24Speaker 2: You're not on a lake, dude.
- 47:25Speaker 2: You're on the open.
- 47:26Speaker: Yeah.
- 47:26Speaker 2: Open ocean.
- 47:27Speaker 2: And, uh, there is a,
- 47:28Speaker: that was, I wonder what the tide swings are out there.
- 47:30Speaker: 'cause some areas, I mean, you, it's like you're in a dang river, you know, like it's just going and so you, you know,
- 47:36Speaker 2: so, so let me talk about these boats for a minute.
- 47:38Speaker 2: 'cause this is an important nuance of the hunt, you know, in our world right here in, when we hunt mm-hmm.
- 47:43Speaker 2: Waterfall here in Utah.
- 47:44Speaker 2: Mm-hmm.
- 47:45Speaker 2: I mean, we may be sitting in a blind.
- 47:47Speaker 2: We could be in a cornfield or we could be in a boat.
- 47:50Speaker 2: You, your boat, my boat, whatever.
- 47:51Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 47:52Speaker 2: But you're just sitting there.
- 47:53Speaker 2: It's stacked.
- 47:53Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 47:54Speaker 2: Nothing's ha you're just sitting there.
- 47:55Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 47:56Speaker 2: Right.
- 47:57Speaker 2: Um, in that environment, if you're me, you shoot really well.
- 48:02Speaker 2: If you're Tyce you miss a lot.
- 48:04Speaker 2: Right.
- 48:05Speaker 2: Inside joke.
- 48:06Speaker 2: Um, no, but
- 48:08Speaker: I've had my misses.
- 48:09Speaker 2: Okay.
- 48:09Speaker 2: But fast forward to St.
- 48:12Speaker 2: Paul Islands.
- 48:13Speaker: Yeah.
- 48:13Speaker 2: King ider hunting.
- 48:16Speaker 2: Not everything is moving.
- 48:17Speaker: Moving.
- 48:18Speaker 2: So I liked hunting outta the zodiacs better than the banks boats.
- 48:22Speaker: Hmm.
- 48:23Speaker 2: Just'cause I felt like I could see better.
- 48:26Speaker 2: There was more room I could respond, you know, if there was a shooting opportuniTyce.
- 48:30Speaker 2: Mm-hmm.
- 48:31Speaker 2: But here's the problem.
- 48:33Speaker 2: Okay.
- 48:33Speaker 2: You're in this boat.
- 48:35Speaker 2: Things a zodiac.
- 48:36Speaker 2: There's no seats in a zodiac.
- 48:37Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 48:37Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 48:37Speaker 2: You're just sitting on the bottom of the zodiac, which by the way is aluminum.
- 48:41Speaker: Yeah.
- 48:42Speaker: Hmm.
- 48:42Speaker 2: Aluminum in freezing.
- 48:44Speaker: Yeah.
- 48:44Speaker 2: Water.
- 48:45Speaker: It's very comfortable.
- 48:45Speaker 2: It's like an ice skating ring.
- 48:47Speaker 2: So you're, you're just trying to brace yourself in a shooting position.
- 48:51Speaker 2: Then you're going up and down these swells.
- 48:53Speaker: You're not only leading in front of the birds
- 48:54Speaker 2: Yes.
- 48:55Speaker: But you're leading, you're coming up and down.
- 48:56Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 48:56Speaker 2: So you're motoring up and down.
- 48:58Speaker 2: These, these, you're going over these swells and down the backside, the motor's on, so you're constantly moving.
- 49:04Speaker 2: Mm-hmm.
- 49:04Speaker 2: And then these birds, I mean, they, they're moving.
- 49:08Speaker: Yeah.
- 49:08Speaker 2: Sounds
- 49:09Speaker: so fun, man.
- 49:10Speaker 2: So it is, what I'm telling you is, is shooting is, uh.
- 49:14Speaker 2: A challenge.
- 49:15Speaker: Yeah.
- 49:16Speaker 2: Exponentially harder than,
- 49:18Speaker: yeah.
- 49:18Speaker 2: Anything we would experience around here.
- 49:20Speaker 2: Makes sense.
- 49:20Speaker 2: And people need to, I, you know, if I was going up there for the first time, I wish somebody would've explained that to me.
- 49:26Speaker 2: 'cause I'm in this zodiac literally sliding all over the place.
- 49:30Speaker 2: I'm running into the other guy, I'm sliding back into the guide.
- 49:34Speaker: Were you cussing yourself?
- 49:35Speaker: Were you laughing?
- 49:37Speaker 2: A, a little bit of both.
- 49:37Speaker 2: It depends on the, well, the who
- 49:39Speaker: in the
- 49:40Speaker 2: put it way with you all that leads to some missed opportunities.
- 49:43Speaker 2: You're working so dang hard to get an opportuniTyce to shoot one of these things.
- 49:46Speaker 2: And you
- 49:46Speaker: whiff on one, you're like,
- 49:48Speaker 2: yeah.
- 49:48Speaker 2: I mean, as I'm sliding down the, you know, bottom of the zodiac.
- 49:53Speaker: That's funny.
- 49:53Speaker 2: Trying to shoot a bird.
- 49:55Speaker 2: Um, I
- 49:55Speaker: wish I had this on film.
- 49:57Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 49:57Speaker 2: So anyways, it's, it's a very, I guess what I'm telling you, Tyce, it's a very dynamic environment.
- 50:02Speaker: Yeah.
- 50:02Speaker 2: But lots of shooting opportunities.
- 50:04Speaker 2: You know, I shot my limit of, uh, of Iers and um.
- 50:09Speaker: The limit?
- 50:09Speaker: Is it 20 sea ducks in Alaska?
- 50:11Speaker: I think a season.
- 50:12Speaker: I think it's something like it's, you can,
- 50:14Speaker 2: well I think per, we could only shoot four iers, so I think it's four iers.
- 50:19Speaker 2: You maybe we'll shoot others, but
- 50:20Speaker: yeah, I think it's like other combined species.
- 50:22Speaker: Yeah.
- 50:22Speaker: I think too, I mean you could obviously check the regs, but I remember talking to a guy, I thought it was like 20 total or something, but
- 50:30Speaker 2: it could I That sounds right, but I don't, I don't
- 50:32Speaker: Yeah.
- 50:33Speaker 2: Specifically remember.
- 50:34Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 50:35Speaker: You got feral ion on that one, tell you how to do that.
- 50:38Speaker: Mm-hmm.
- 50:38Speaker 2: Or
- 50:38Speaker: whatever you can shoot.
- 50:39Speaker: So, um, trying to think what else on the we want.
- 50:45Speaker: Okay.
- 50:45Speaker: No, no dogs obviously.
- 50:47Speaker 2: No dogs.
- 50:48Speaker: Dad.
- 50:49Speaker 2: I mean, they take my dog hunting to everywhere.
- 50:50Speaker 2: I didn't take'em here.
- 50:52Speaker: Yeah.
- 50:53Speaker: Yeah.
- 50:53Speaker: Um.
- 50:54Speaker: Would they net the birds
- 50:55Speaker 2: net?
- 50:55Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 50:56Speaker 2: He has, the guy has a big net.
- 50:57Speaker 2: So when a bird's shot, I mean the next prioriTyce is motoring over.
- 51:02Speaker 2: It doesn't matter if there's another group coming in.
- 51:05Speaker 2: Get that bird.
- 51:05Speaker 2: You're going to get that bird.
- 51:06Speaker: Yeah.
- 51:07Speaker 2: You have to.
- 51:07Speaker: Mm-hmm.
- 51:08Speaker 2: So, um, he'd motor over and he had a big, long, I don't know, fishing net.
- 51:14Speaker 2: Mm-hmm.
- 51:15Speaker 2: Long, not long pole on it, handle on it.
- 51:17Speaker 2: And, uh, never.
- 51:18Speaker 2: How
- 51:18Speaker: would they keep track if it was of yours?
- 51:21Speaker: Did they have a way to keep track?
- 51:22Speaker: It was your,
- 51:22Speaker 2: you
- 51:23Speaker: just had
- 51:23to
- 51:23Speaker 2: do that in the zodiac.
- 51:24Speaker 2: I mean, it's only you and one other guy.
- 51:25Speaker 2: So I'd keep my birds, he'd keep his birds.
- 51:28Speaker: Okay.
- 51:28Speaker 2: And then in the bigger banks boat, you just, you'd just put'em down in front of you.
- 51:32Speaker: Oh, okay.
- 51:33Speaker 2: The banks boats were nicer.
- 51:34Speaker 2: 'cause you didn't get the, the, the salt spray.
- 51:37Speaker: Mm-hmm.
- 51:38Speaker 2: Uh, with the zodiac, you were completely exposed.
- 51:40Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 51:40Speaker: You're living the experience.
- 51:41Speaker 2: You're, you're li well you're a foot off the water right.
- 51:44Speaker 2: In a zodiac.
- 51:45Speaker: Yeah.
- 51:45Speaker 2: And that banks boat sits a little higher on the water.
- 51:48Speaker 2: It's got that hard.
- 51:49Speaker: You have chairs in there?
- 51:50Speaker 2: Chairs in there.
- 51:51Speaker: Okay.
- 51:52Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 51:53Speaker 2: So, um, so you're a little bit more protected from the wind and salt spray and, and maybe it's a little more stable shooting.
- 52:02Speaker 2: I, I just like the freedom of being in that.
- 52:05Speaker: So when you said you hunt until noon, was that kind of, did they call it for the day or did you guys kind of, or just kind of once you got your birds or how just kinda Yeah.
- 52:15Speaker: Felt it out or
- 52:16Speaker 2: It's all based, it, it's, it's like duck hunting anywhere.
- 52:19Speaker: Mm-hmm.
- 52:20Speaker 2: Um, I mean there's, there's a couple hours where the birds are really moving, transitioning, moving to feed, moving to loaf, whatever it is.
- 52:27Speaker 2: Mm-hmm.
- 52:28Speaker 2: It's no different with sea ducks.
- 52:30Speaker: So you didn't get your old squad.
- 52:31Speaker: Do you feel like you're like, man, I wish I would've stayed out longer in?
- 52:34Speaker: No.
- 52:34Speaker: Or do you feel like it was it was a good,
- 52:36Speaker 2: I felt like it was
- 52:37Speaker: good.
- 52:38Speaker: It was a good timeframe.
- 52:38Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 52:39Speaker 2: 'cause they're not only focused on me, but they're focused on the other clients as well.
- 52:43Speaker 2: Right.
- 52:43Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 52:43Speaker 2: So you, you.
- 52:46Speaker 2: I give'em the guides a little bit of grace.
- 52:47Speaker: Yeah.
- 52:48Speaker 2: I mean, if they would've just taken me out on the boat Yeah.
- 52:50Speaker 2: I, I would've done that.
- 52:52Speaker: Yeah.
- 52:52Speaker 2: Um, but, you know, hunting those old Quas in the, and the harlequins is different.
- 52:57Speaker 2: So the EERs and the, and the white wing, black sco, you're out in the open ocean.
- 53:02Speaker: Okay.
- 53:02Speaker: Yeah.
- 53:02Speaker: Tell us about the other species of
- 53:04Speaker 2: is
- 53:04Speaker: different.
- 53:05Speaker: So,
- 53:05Speaker 2: so with the Harlequin in the, in the, uh, in the long tails, you go into the coves.
- 53:10Speaker: Oh, okay.
- 53:11Speaker 2: And you're
- 53:12Speaker: still hunting from a boat
- 53:13Speaker 2: still.
- 53:14Speaker 2: You're still in the boat.
- 53:15Speaker 2: Mm-hmm.
- 53:15Speaker 2: Still hunting from the water.
- 53:17Speaker 2: Um, I'd call it jump shooting.
- 53:19Speaker 2: That's probably the, the closest thing that comes to mind.
- 53:23Speaker: Do you kind of pin'em in a bay and then they
- 53:24Speaker 2: swing up?
- 53:24Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 53:25Speaker 2: You try and you try and corner'em into a, you know, up against rocks or into a bottom and they come flying past you and then they come flying past you.
- 53:31Speaker 2: That's exactly right.
- 53:33Speaker: Hmm.
- 53:33Speaker 2: And you know, that's a challenge too,'cause.
- 53:37Speaker 2: You gotta pay attention to those swells that turn into waves and rough surf when you're close to the be beaches, which is where you're trying to get to shoot these birds.
- 53:44Speaker 2: Mm-hmm.
- 53:45Speaker 2: So the guides working really hard to pay attention to where you're at in relation to these surf and then the birds and, um,
- 53:55Speaker: so is there a lot of little bays on St.
- 53:56Speaker 2: Paul?
- 53:56Speaker 2: There are, yeah.
- 53:57Speaker 2: So we'd, we went a couple different directions, um, when we were targeting articles in long tails.
- 54:04Speaker: Could you sit on the shore?
- 54:06Speaker: Do you think?
- 54:07Speaker: There, and, and
- 54:07Speaker 2: yeah.
- 54:08Speaker 2: They do.
- 54:08Speaker 2: They do.
- 54:09Speaker: Decoy the
- 54:09Speaker 2: shoreline.
- 54:10Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 54:10Speaker 2: They, if yeah, if, if you want to do that, they do.
- 54:12Speaker 2: Mm-hmm.
- 54:13Speaker 2: Um, and they've got spots they can take you, which again, depending on the conditions, if they don't want to take the boats out that day,
- 54:20Speaker: yeah.
- 54:20Speaker 2: That's what you may be doing.
- 54:22Speaker 2: Hmming, we never, we never had to hunt.
- 54:25Speaker: Mm-hmm.
- 54:25Speaker 2: From the shore, I mean from the water.
- 54:28Speaker 2: You just cover so much more ground.
- 54:29Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 54:29Speaker 2: Especially if you're targeting harlequins in long tails.
- 54:32Speaker: Okay, so in Alaska, I don't think you need a guide for ducks.
- 54:36Speaker: I don't believe so.
- 54:38Speaker 2: I don't think
- 54:39Speaker: you do.
- 54:39Speaker: I don't think you do.
- 54:39Speaker: Could you do a DIY thing there?
- 54:42Speaker: No bays.
- 54:43Speaker: Could you hunt bays?
- 54:44Speaker: DIYI
- 54:46Speaker 2: don't.
- 54:46Speaker: You probably don't even know where to stay, or, I mean, camping would probably be terrible.
- 54:50Speaker 2: Tyce, this is like 300 people live on this island.
- 54:52Speaker 2: Yeah, there's, I is there a hotel?
- 54:55Speaker 2: I don't even, I didn't notice a hotel anywhere.
- 54:57Speaker: Yeah.
- 54:58Speaker: Okay.
- 54:58Speaker 2: I mean, you may knock on somebody's door and say, can I sleep on your floor?
- 55:01Speaker: Or,
- 55:02Speaker 2: you know, something
- 55:02Speaker: Camping in a tent.
- 55:03Speaker: There's no,
- 55:03Speaker 2: yeah, there's
- 55:04Speaker: no
- 55:04Speaker 2: CareAway
- 55:04Speaker: campground.
- 55:06Speaker 2: Tyce, you are on the edge of the world out here.
- 55:09Speaker: No, I, I believe it.
- 55:10Speaker: I'm just, I mean, some people, you know.
- 55:12Speaker 2: I know.
- 55:12Speaker 2: I,
- 55:12Speaker: I know why you're asking because I know you, maybe I should try.
- 55:15Speaker: Hey, I'm, I'm, I'm trying to find, to, to pay a guide.
- 55:18Speaker: I'm just, I'm just asking questions.
- 55:19Speaker: You know what?
- 55:20Speaker 2: I don't think so.
- 55:21Speaker: I mean, it'd be challenging, it sounds like, obviously, but it
- 55:23Speaker 2: would be,
- 55:25Speaker: and by the time you fly there anyways, it's,
- 55:27Speaker 2: I mean, if you're
- 55:27Speaker: be worth,
- 55:28Speaker 2: okay.
- 55:29Speaker 2: Set that money aside.
- 55:31Speaker 2: Just the distance and difficulTyce, the logistics getting there.
- 55:35Speaker 2: Mm-hmm.
- 55:35Speaker: Would be a pain.
- 55:36Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 55:36Speaker 2: I wouldn't do that to, I'd say wait a year or two, save your money and
- 55:42Speaker: then do it the right
- 55:43Speaker 2: way.
- 55:43Speaker 2: Do it, do it the right way.
- 55:44Speaker: Yeah.
- 55:44Speaker: Yeah.
- 55:45Speaker: I was just throwing that out there.
- 55:47Speaker: Okay, so let's talk about, um, wounded birds.
- 55:51Speaker: Yeah.
- 55:51Speaker: Do they, did they, did people wound birds and were, did, were they like, Hey man, that's part of your thing?
- 55:56Speaker: Or Were, or were they okay?
- 55:57Speaker: Or they,
- 55:57Speaker 2: yeah.
- 55:57Speaker 2: No, we,
- 55:58Speaker: they obviously, they try to get'em, but
- 56:00Speaker 2: yeah.
- 56:01Speaker 2: So
- 56:01Speaker: somewhat get away.
- 56:01Speaker: I'm sure.
- 56:02Speaker 2: So
- 56:03Speaker: it's part of duck hunting.
- 56:04Speaker 2: I mean, Crip, you know, crippled birds is part of every Tycepe,
- 56:06Speaker: especially divers.
- 56:07Speaker 2: Mm-hmm.
- 56:08Speaker: Divers, if you don't hit'em, they go.
- 56:10Speaker 2: So, I can't think of any birds.
- 56:12Speaker 2: We didn't recover, but there were crippled birds on the water.
- 56:15Speaker 2: We had, we had to shoot a second or third time.
- 56:17Speaker: Oh, okay.
- 56:18Speaker 2: Because they'll swim.
- 56:19Speaker: You're able to recover'em.
- 56:20Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 56:20Speaker: Okay.
- 56:21Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 56:21Speaker 2: I, I can't think of a single bird.
- 56:23Speaker 2: We didn't recover.
- 56:24Speaker: And you're probably trying to make your shots count.
- 56:27Speaker: You're probably trying to, I mean, you're not just sky busting everything.
- 56:30Speaker: No.
- 56:30Speaker: Because these are, these are once in lifetime birds.
- 56:31Speaker: You want to get at the right shop,
- 56:33Speaker 2: right
- 56:33Speaker: the right distance and make it count, I assume.
- 56:36Speaker: Yeah.
- 56:36Speaker: So
- 56:37Speaker 2: I mean, I, I think if you really started sky busting or really started reaching out pretTyce far to try, and the guys would probably
- 56:43Speaker: say,
- 56:44Speaker 2: he's gonna tell you, he's gonna say,
- 56:44Speaker: Hey,
- 56:45Speaker 2: yeah,
- 56:45Speaker: don't do
- 56:46Speaker 2: that.
- 56:46Speaker: Yeah.
- 56:46Speaker: Yeah.
- 56:47Speaker: Well, that's what a good guide should do is tell someone if they're,'cause these are obviously trophy birds.
- 56:51Speaker: They're, you're limited on the amounts and the numbers, and they want'em to be there forever.
- 56:55Speaker: Right?
- 56:56Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 56:56Speaker: So
- 56:57Speaker 2: if you go to, Hey, hey, and there's a, there's a couple outfitters out there, but again, I use Lucian Island, uh, and they're good.
- 57:04Speaker 2: They're, they're outstanding.
- 57:05Speaker 2: Mm-hmm.
- 57:06Speaker 2: I mean, they've been there a long time.
- 57:07Speaker 2: They know exactly what they're doing.
- 57:08Speaker: Mm-hmm.
- 57:09Speaker 2: Um, very skilled, very safe.
- 57:11Speaker 2: Mm-hmm.
- 57:12Speaker 2: I wanna stress that.
- 57:13Speaker 2: Very safe.
- 57:14Speaker 2: Um.
- 57:16Speaker 2: Yeah, I would just say they do it right?
- 57:18Speaker 2: They do it right.
- 57:19Speaker 2: They okay.
- 57:19Speaker 2: And, and they make sure everyone has a great experience.
- 57:22Speaker 2: I mean, they can't guarantee you're gonna kill every bird, but
- 57:24Speaker: Sure.
- 57:24Speaker 2: They're gonna put you on birds.
- 57:26Speaker: And it was, did you mention, was it a four or five day hunt or how long was it?
- 57:29Speaker 2: Yeah, Tyce, I think it was four days, if I remember right.
- 57:33Speaker 2: Okay.
- 57:33Speaker 2: I think, I think we hunted four days.
- 57:34Speaker: Sounds about right.
- 57:35Speaker 2: And that last day, I think we,'cause you again, you're waiting for the plane to come in.
- 57:40Speaker 2: They get there late in the afternoon.
- 57:41Speaker 2: So we hunted that morning.
- 57:42Speaker: Okay.
- 57:43Speaker 2: And then jumped in the ambulance, went to the runway, and uh, we jumped out and the next group jumped in.
- 57:50Speaker: Hmm.
- 57:51Speaker: Is there anything else to do there besides duck hunting?
- 57:54Speaker: Can you go fishing or anything?
- 57:55Speaker 2: No, there's no fishing.
- 57:57Speaker 2: You can go beach combing.
- 57:58Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 57:59Speaker 2: Um,
- 58:00Speaker: you're there to kill ducks.
- 58:01Speaker 2: You're there.
- 58:02Speaker 2: That's, I mean, we went to that poor, we went to that little historical socieTyce, which
- 58:07Speaker: yeah.
- 58:07Speaker 2: I mean it's not much, but it gives you a sense for what that island's all about.
- 58:11Speaker: Do you remember, and I'm sure a lot of this stuff is on Ellucian's, um, website, Ellucian Outfitters website.
- 58:17Speaker: So if you guys wanna look at more information where I'm just kind of obviously picking Mike's brain from what he can remember.
- 58:23Speaker: But, um, do you remember the seasons, kind of the time of year?
- 58:27Speaker: I mean, I know you were in January,
- 58:28Speaker 2: it's dec Yeah, it's, it's, I'm gonna say December and January.
- 58:33Speaker 2: I don't know if it goes into February or not.
- 58:35Speaker 2: It seemed like we were one of the last groups.
- 58:37Speaker: When you were looking, were they scheduled out years or how or
- 58:41Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 58:41Speaker 2: They, they get like, I don't
- 58:43Speaker: booked
- 58:43Speaker 2: out.
- 58:43Speaker 2: I mean, you'd have to call'em and see if you wanted to go this
- 58:45Speaker: winter.
- 58:46Speaker 2: Yeah, sure.
- 58:46Speaker 2: You know, if there's a cancel.
- 58:47Speaker 2: When you were
- 58:48Speaker: looking, do you remember kind of, was it kind of
- 58:49Speaker 2: I thought I was gonna have to wait a year.
- 58:51Speaker: Okay.
- 58:52Speaker: Yeah.
- 58:53Speaker 2: Actually, I wanna go back to something'cause I think this would be good for people listening if they, if they've not seen this.
- 58:58Speaker 2: I mentioned our taxidermist kind of got me tuned into it.
- 59:03Speaker 2: That's the first time I saw a real King Ider.
- 59:05Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 59:05Speaker 2: You know, he had it, he had it up on the stand and, uh.
- 59:09Speaker 2: But where I, where I first was exposed to it, so I missed a point here.
- 59:12Speaker: Mm-hmm.
- 59:13Speaker 2: Is, um, you know, I'm friends with the president of Benelli and I worked together earlier in our career and he and I follow him.
- 59:20Speaker 2: And anyways, I don't know, this is four or five years ago, maybe a little longer.
- 59:25Speaker 2: Benelli produced a movie called, I
- 59:28Speaker: think I've seen
- 59:29Speaker 2: that one, to Kill a King.
- 59:31Speaker 2: The title of it is called, it's a short film.
- 59:33Speaker: Were they hunting out of layout boats on that one or no?
- 59:35Speaker 2: They u they went to St.
- 59:36Speaker 2: Paul Island.
- 59:37Speaker: Okay.
- 59:37Speaker: Maybe not.
- 59:38Speaker 2: And they used the same outfitter.
- 59:39Speaker: Okay.
- 59:40Speaker 2: So that was my, the very, I watched that.
- 59:43Speaker: I gotta watch that one.
- 59:44Speaker: That
- 59:44Speaker 2: it is super cool.
- 59:45Speaker: Mm-hmm.
- 59:45Speaker 2: Um, it's called To Kill a King And, um, it's all about the journey to St.
- 59:50Speaker 2: Paul Island.
- 59:51Speaker 2: I think they were launching, did
- 59:52Speaker: that come out six or seven years ago?
- 59:54Speaker 2: Yeah, I think I have
- 59:55Speaker: seen it
- 59:55Speaker 2: know what they made it when they, uh, I think when they came out with a super black eagle.
- 59:59Speaker 2: Three.
- 59:59Speaker: Three, yeah.
- 1:00:00Speaker 2: That was kind of the launch behind that.
- 1:00:03Speaker 2: I think So.
- 1:00:03Speaker 2: Platform, or at least the, the, the third generation.
- 1:00:08Speaker 2: Yeah, that was a fir.
- 1:00:08Speaker 2: I'm like, man, that is, that looks so fun.
- 1:00:10Speaker 2: That looks so cool.
- 1:00:11Speaker: Yeah.
- 1:00:12Speaker 2: Then what was it, Troy's studio and he's mounting a, an ider.
- 1:00:17Speaker: You're like, I'm doing it.
- 1:00:18Speaker 2: I'm like, I'm going fourth
- 1:00:19Speaker: quarter, baby.
- 1:00:19Speaker 2: I'm going, that's right.
- 1:00:21Speaker 2: Q4.
- 1:00:22Speaker 2: Gotta go hard.
- 1:00:23Speaker: Q4, gotta go.
- 1:00:24Speaker: Um, what, this kind of came to my thought, I think just kind of, do you know what they were eating out there?
- 1:00:29Speaker: The king ider or what their color comes from, what they're feeding on?
- 1:00:33Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 1:00:34Speaker: Did they tell you see, fish gotta come out of their belly?
- 1:00:37Speaker: I don't know.
- 1:00:37Speaker 2: Yeah, no.
- 1:00:38Speaker 2: I, my guess is it's, uh, mussel, uh, you know, shellfish Tycepe things that, that they're eating on.
- 1:00:46Speaker 2: Um, I'm not really sure that you
- 1:00:49Speaker: didn't see'em regurgitating like marand.
- 1:00:51Speaker: There's lots of times no, nothing.
- 1:00:52Speaker: Shoot'em.
- 1:00:52Speaker: The fish will come out of their crops, you
- 1:00:54Speaker 2: know.
- 1:00:54Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:00:54Speaker 2: No, never, never saw that.
- 1:00:56Speaker 2: Okay.
- 1:00:56Speaker 2: Never opened up their stomach, uh, to, to even look.
- 1:00:59Speaker 2: Um, because
- 1:00:59Speaker: there's something out there obviously that that's what they,
- 1:01:02Speaker 2: well, to
- 1:01:03Speaker: live
- 1:01:03Speaker 2: there.
- 1:01:03Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:01:03Speaker 2: I mean, I assume, you know.
- 1:01:06Speaker 2: The reason why they're in that, um, what did I tell you?
- 1:01:10Speaker 2: They called it the, the
- 1:01:11Speaker: washable,
- 1:01:11Speaker 2: the the washing machine.
- 1:01:13Speaker 2: Yeah, the washing machine is, I think that's just
- 1:01:15Speaker: stirs
- 1:01:16Speaker 2: stirring up all food up and
- 1:01:17Speaker: stuff.
- 1:01:18Speaker 2: So I think that's why they're, they're feeding over in that area and then transitioning back,
- 1:01:22Speaker: maybe transitioning to calmer water to
- 1:01:24Speaker 2: That's exactly right.
- 1:01:25Speaker: For hangout.
- 1:01:26Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:01:26Speaker 2: That's exactly right.
- 1:01:28Speaker 2: But, um, and I hope I'm right on this, the lobe, that big yellow lobe, you were talking about this earlier.
- 1:01:35Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:01:35Speaker 2: Uh, I was reading, I think I was reading somewhere that, that, or somebody told me that they used that to desalinate the waters they drink.
- 1:01:42Speaker: That's cool.
- 1:01:43Speaker 2: Um,
- 1:01:43Speaker: makes sense.
- 1:01:44Speaker 2: I, I mean, it does make sense.
- 1:01:46Speaker 2: I, and it might've been Troy actually who told me that.
- 1:01:49Speaker: Oh, okay.
- 1:01:50Speaker: But they're be, I was looking at his, the kind of, I thought it was the beak.
- 1:01:53Speaker: I've never actually felt them.
- 1:01:55Speaker: I was like, is that the beak?
- 1:01:56Speaker: And he said, no, it's the lobe.
- 1:01:57Speaker 2: Yeah, it's called the lobe.
- 1:01:59Speaker: Huh.
- 1:01:59Speaker 2: Um.
- 1:02:01Speaker 2: That part's super cool.
- 1:02:02Speaker 2: Well, there's three, three things I love.
- 1:02:04Speaker 2: Well, four, number one, they're big.
- 1:02:06Speaker: Yeah.
- 1:02:07Speaker 2: Number two, that lobe is just so unique.
- 1:02:09Speaker 2: It's such a unique identifier.
- 1:02:11Speaker 2: Number three are the little, um, almost like Batman wings that come, the feathers that come off, they, they kind of curl up on their backs.
- 1:02:20Speaker 2: That's, I love that.
- 1:02:22Speaker: Oh, there's so many unique shapes to'em.
- 1:02:24Speaker 2: And then, and then the coloring.
- 1:02:26Speaker: Yeah.
- 1:02:26Speaker: What kind of bird do you get
- 1:02:28Speaker 2: that
- 1:02:28Speaker: coloring,
- 1:02:28Speaker 2: that bluish gray on the its head and the kind of a lime green and yellow and black and orange.
- 1:02:35Speaker 2: I mean,
- 1:02:36Speaker: that's incredible.
- 1:02:36Speaker 2: Are you kidding me?
- 1:02:37Speaker: Yeah.
- 1:02:38Speaker: That's amazing.
- 1:02:39Speaker: That's the fun thing about ducks, and I think that's why I know, at least for me, that's why I got hooked into'em, is just the different species and you pull'em up and they're just like, wow, that's a, I mean, they're all so unique, you know?
- 1:02:51Speaker: Or a pheasant's amazing.
- 1:02:52Speaker: Like there's nothing wrong with a beautiful pheasant, but it's kind of, it's a pheasant, right?
- 1:02:56Speaker: Yeah.
- 1:02:56Speaker: Like they're all the same, a duck.
- 1:02:57Speaker: They're so many different kinds.
- 1:02:58Speaker: And that's what.
- 1:02:59Speaker: I think as fun as waterfowl, I mean, you have how many different species here in your office, you know?
- 1:03:04Speaker: And I mean, that, that eagle head snow, that, you know, snow goose is cool.
- 1:03:09Speaker: The white, I mean, they're just all so different,
- 1:03:11Speaker 2: you know?
- 1:03:12Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:03:12Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:03:12Speaker 2: That blue phase is cool.
- 1:03:14Speaker: Yeah.
- 1:03:14Speaker: I want one of those, one of these days.
- 1:03:16Speaker: One of these days I'll get out and kill some snow geese like that.
- 1:03:20Speaker: Um, cool.
- 1:03:22Speaker: Anything?
- 1:03:22Speaker: Okay, let's, I think we're about wrapping it up.
- 1:03:25Speaker: What about getting birds home?
- 1:03:27Speaker: I don't think we've talked about that.
- 1:03:28Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:03:28Speaker 2: So they take care of, like most good guides, they take care of all that.
- 1:03:32Speaker: Okay.
- 1:03:32Speaker 2: So we get, we get back to the lodge mm-hmm.
- 1:03:35Speaker 2: And they've got a big long table in there and mm-hmm.
- 1:03:37Speaker 2: Again, they make sure everybody's birds stay with their person.
- 1:03:41Speaker 2: Good.
- 1:03:42Speaker 2: So they tag'em and
- 1:03:43Speaker: mm-hmm.
- 1:03:43Speaker 2: Um, once they're tagged, they, they wrap'em, I think they wrapped them up.
- 1:03:48Speaker 2: Um, they
- 1:03:49Speaker: wrap'em in, um, in paper towel.
- 1:03:52Speaker 2: I think they did Tice.
- 1:03:54Speaker: So they'll do, they did like taxi service.
- 1:03:55Speaker: They'll wet the paper towel and wrap it around
- 1:03:57Speaker 2: their
- 1:03:57Speaker: feet and the head so
- 1:03:58Speaker 2: they
- 1:03:58Speaker: freeze
- 1:03:59Speaker 2: dry.
- 1:03:59Speaker 2: I think they, I think that's exactly what they did.
- 1:04:01Speaker 2: They have a big freezer, so everybody's
- 1:04:03Speaker: bags,
- 1:04:03Speaker 2: everybody's birds are in that freezer under their name.
- 1:04:07Speaker 2: And then, um, they tell you to bring an empTyce, kind of collapsible cooler.
- 1:04:11Speaker: Okay.
- 1:04:11Speaker 2: And, um, the load you up,
- 1:04:13Speaker: little Yeti cooler or
- 1:04:14Speaker 2: something?
- 1:04:14Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:04:15Speaker 2: You could do that.
- 1:04:16Speaker 2: Whatever.
- 1:04:16Speaker 2: My, I brought more of a soft sided.
- 1:04:17Speaker 2: It
- 1:04:17Speaker: gives me a bigger one,
- 1:04:18Speaker 2: one that collapsed, still kind of had some structure to it.
- 1:04:21Speaker: Mm-hmm.
- 1:04:21Speaker 2: And, um, loaded'em up and away.
- 1:04:25Speaker 2: They sent'em with you any
- 1:04:25Speaker: permitting you had to
- 1:04:26Speaker 2: have or
- 1:04:27Speaker: no?
- 1:04:27Speaker 2: Nope, nothing.
- 1:04:28Speaker 2: Just they needed to see those tags, you know, on the bird.
- 1:04:31Speaker: Mm-hmm.
- 1:04:32Speaker 2: And, um, and I guess your license,
- 1:04:34Speaker: wait, there's tags on the bird.
- 1:04:36Speaker 2: They tag each bird
- 1:04:37Speaker: with what, uh, their own thing or is
- 1:04:40Speaker 2: it?
- 1:04:40Speaker 2: No, no, this is state thing.
- 1:04:41Speaker 2: It says state thing.
- 1:04:42Speaker 2: Right.
- 1:04:42Speaker 2: So it's got your name on it.
- 1:04:44Speaker 2: It's got your license number.
- 1:04:45Speaker 2: Oh, okay.
- 1:04:46Speaker 2: The date it was shot.
- 1:04:47Speaker 2: It's got their guide name, number, all the information on.
- 1:04:49Speaker 2: It's all the information.
- 1:04:50Speaker 2: So if you were pulled aside.
- 1:04:53Speaker: You have your license,
- 1:04:53Speaker 2: they'd look at that.
- 1:04:54Speaker: The outfit or
- 1:04:55Speaker 2: Okay.
- 1:04:55Speaker 2: Then you'd show'em your license.
- 1:04:56Speaker 2: But I mean, Tyce, you, you spent a lot of time in Alaska too.
- 1:05:00Speaker 2: I mean, there are so many people leaving that state with
- 1:05:03Speaker: Yeah.
- 1:05:03Speaker 2: Birds, uh,
- 1:05:04Speaker: seafood,
- 1:05:05Speaker 2: fish,
- 1:05:06Speaker: elk, deer,
- 1:05:07Speaker 2: elk or bears.
- 1:05:08Speaker 2: Not elk.
- 1:05:08Speaker 2: Moose.
- 1:05:08Speaker 2: Moose, moose,
- 1:05:09Speaker: caribou.
- 1:05:10Speaker 2: Uh, in fact, the hotel, this is, I, I thought this was hilarious.
- 1:05:14Speaker 2: The hotel I stayed in, I'd never seen this before.
- 1:05:17Speaker 2: They had a walk-in freezer off the lobby for all the hunters to store their game in.
- 1:05:22Speaker: Nice.
- 1:05:22Speaker: I like
- 1:05:23Speaker 2: it.
- 1:05:23Speaker 2: It was super cool.
- 1:05:24Speaker: I love Alaska
- 1:05:25Speaker 2: for
- 1:05:25Speaker: that reason.
- 1:05:25Speaker: I mean,
- 1:05:25Speaker 2: where, where, where else in the world would you find that?
- 1:05:28Speaker 2: In
- 1:05:28Speaker: hotel.
- 1:05:28Speaker: That's why I love Alaska, man.
- 1:05:30Speaker: It's one of my favorite places.
- 1:05:32Speaker: That's so cool.
- 1:05:33Speaker: Um, okay.
- 1:05:34Speaker: So that was easy to get'em home.
- 1:05:35Speaker: 'cause I, I, when I shot my shell ducks in New Zealand last year, that was pain, like the bird flu thing and getting'em back and I had to have'em all prepared.
- 1:05:44Speaker: And then I had to go to a licensed tax and was here to like.
- 1:05:47Speaker: Reclean'em.
- 1:05:48Speaker: So, but flying, flying back from there is no big deal.
- 1:05:51Speaker: Well,
- 1:05:51Speaker 2: the, the difference between my story and yours is you left the country.
- 1:05:54Speaker: Yeah.
- 1:05:54Speaker: Yeah.
- 1:05:55Speaker 2: I'm still in the country.
- 1:05:55Speaker: Obvious the United States.
- 1:05:56Speaker 2: Right?
- 1:05:57Speaker: Yeah.
- 1:05:57Speaker 2: Which I think would be another drawback at Greenland.
- 1:06:00Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 1:06:00Speaker 2: There's probably another level of complexiTyce in getting your birds back.
- 1:06:04Speaker: That's something you'd wanna look into.
- 1:06:05Speaker: Or if you're bringing your bird, you, you come to the US and then take your birds, obviously to another country.
- 1:06:11Speaker: That could be challenging for someone that's not a resident.
- 1:06:14Speaker 2: Right.
- 1:06:14Speaker 2: Right.
- 1:06:14Speaker 2: Going the other way.
- 1:06:15Speaker: Yeah.
- 1:06:16Speaker: Going the other way.
- 1:06:16Speaker: But you just have to do your research, obviously, if you're gonna do a hunt like this.
- 1:06:20Speaker: So cool.
- 1:06:21Speaker 2: So, so our next seed dot hunt is in January.
- 1:06:24Speaker: Yeah.
- 1:06:24Speaker 2: We're going back east.
- 1:06:25Speaker: Yeah.
- 1:06:26Speaker 2: So, uh,
- 1:06:27Speaker: I'm looking forward to
- 1:06:28Speaker 2: that.
- 1:06:28Speaker 2: I hope I can hit, get that long that, uh, that old squad, the long tail on that trip.
- 1:06:33Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:06:33Speaker: I want the ider, I want the common ier.
- 1:06:36Speaker: That, that's my number one
- 1:06:37Speaker 2: mine too.
- 1:06:38Speaker: Old squad number two.
- 1:06:39Speaker 2: Mine too.
- 1:06:40Speaker: Probably three would be a black duck.
- 1:06:43Speaker: Who?
- 1:06:44Speaker: I want a black duck really bad.
- 1:06:45Speaker: I want scooters though too.
- 1:06:46Speaker: Yeah.
- 1:06:47Speaker: And they have the common koder there, the white wing.
- 1:06:50Speaker 2: And they have the surf koder.
- 1:06:52Speaker 2: The
- 1:06:52Speaker: surf koder.
- 1:06:53Speaker: I want all of'em.
- 1:06:54Speaker: Let's just not come back until
- 1:06:56Speaker 2: we get all of them.
- 1:06:56Speaker 2: So, so I have three of the seven.
- 1:06:58Speaker 2: So you just mentioned the other four.
- 1:07:00Speaker: Yeah.
- 1:07:00Speaker 2: And I think your order is the same as my order.
- 1:07:03Speaker: Okay, good.
- 1:07:04Speaker 2: So
- 1:07:05Speaker: hope.
- 1:07:05Speaker: Yeah, we, we, you guys are listening.
- 1:07:06Speaker: We were supposed to go to Maine or Massachusetts, that area hunting this, this uh, January.
- 1:07:14Speaker: And the only storm we had that happened pretTyce much this winter happened on the day we were supposed to,
- 1:07:21we
- 1:07:21Speaker 2: couldn't even get on an airplane.
- 1:07:22Speaker: No.
- 1:07:22Speaker: Our, our flights were canceled and it had a big old storm hit and we had like the most bluebird, you know, winter, and the guide said, oh man, it's nice weather.
- 1:07:30Speaker: And then it just hit.
- 1:07:31Speaker: So we had to, and our hunt was the last week of the hunt that you could hunt'em.
- 1:07:35Speaker: So we had to cancel, uh, our hunt, but we got it on the books for this year.
- 1:07:39Speaker: So.
- 1:07:40Speaker 2: So hopefully with any luck we'll come back with everything.
- 1:07:43Speaker: I do wish they had Harlequin up there, but that's not gonna happen up in that area.
- 1:07:48Speaker: So off the go, have to go to Alaska or somewhere else, or Seattle or something like that to get those Harlequin.
- 1:07:55Speaker: So anything else before we wrap up?
- 1:07:57Speaker: You want to share with the audience about Hunting King Iers or some inspirational quote to people or
- 1:08:03Speaker 2: ties I something like that?
- 1:08:05Speaker 2: I just say, uh uh.
- 1:08:07Speaker 2: The trip was everything I thought and hoped it would be and more.
- 1:08:12Speaker: Awesome.
- 1:08:13Speaker 2: Now I.
- 1:08:14Speaker 2: You and I are cut from the same cloth for the most part, but it was an adventure.
- 1:08:19Speaker 2: It really was.
- 1:08:20Speaker 2: That's why I think
- 1:08:21Speaker: I'm relying to do it
- 1:08:22Speaker 2: right for the adventure.
- 1:08:22Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:08:22Speaker 2: It's, it's all about killing those iers if you're looking for a luxury lodge and you know, chef prepared meals and Yeah.
- 1:08:30Speaker 2: You know, um, all the pampering that comes along with that, that's not this trip.
- 1:08:34Speaker: Yeah.
- 1:08:35Speaker 2: If you want to go kill a king ider,
- 1:08:36Speaker: that's where you want to, that's the one you want to do.
- 1:08:39Speaker: Yeah.
- 1:08:39Speaker: Yeah.
- 1:08:40Speaker: I think that, like, like I was saying, you, you know, we do these things.
- 1:08:44Speaker: The, the bird or the, the big game animal or whatever we bring back is just a small token that we bring from the field to remember that hunt, you know, or remember that adventure that, that one thing I obviously, the reason I love hunting is it takes you, it makes you go to places you would never go,
- 1:09:00Speaker 2: right?
- 1:09:00Speaker: Like you'd never go to, you know, that island, you know, St.
- 1:09:03Speaker: Paul and go check that out.
- 1:09:04Speaker: Just unless you were hunting, right?
- 1:09:06Speaker: Like, I would never probably go.
- 1:09:09Speaker: To New Zealand and go hunt.
- 1:09:11Speaker: Maybe I will, I mean, maybe I do some hiking, but, you know, fly into a helicopter into the Southern Alps and hunt tar these, and they just, they just take you to these amazing places, right?
- 1:09:20Speaker: And the downfall is when you do it, you want to go do more.
- 1:09:24Speaker: So I dunno if that's a downfall, but the, it's like you just,
- 1:09:27Speaker 2: well, it never stops, I
- 1:09:28Speaker: think
- 1:09:28is
- 1:09:28Speaker: your point.
- 1:09:29Speaker: Yeah.
- 1:09:29Speaker: There's
- 1:09:29Speaker 2: always
- 1:09:29Speaker: another, he's, I wanna go here, I wanna go there.
- 1:09:31Speaker: And, you know, so,
- 1:09:34Speaker 2: yeah, no, I would, uh, I would just, it was a bucket list item and I'm glad it's, uh.
- 1:09:41Speaker 2: I shouldn't say.
- 1:09:41Speaker 2: I'm glad it's off the list.
- 1:09:42Speaker 2: I'm glad I did it.
- 1:09:43Speaker: Yeah.
- 1:09:44Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:09:44Speaker 2: And like you said it, the experience, the memories, uh, the places, the people.
- 1:09:50Speaker: Yeah.
- 1:09:50Speaker 2: I still smile when I think about those, uh, Amish guys.
- 1:09:53Speaker 2: Those
- 1:09:53Speaker: Amish guys.
- 1:09:54Speaker: That's something that's something you wouldn't expect.
- 1:09:56Speaker 2: No, I mean, I'm, I'm getting on them plane.
- 1:09:58Speaker 2: I'm like, man, who are these guys?
- 1:09:59Speaker 2: I didn't even
- 1:10:00Speaker: know you guys flying.
- 1:10:00Speaker 2: They're the nicest guys too.
- 1:10:02Speaker 2: Any
- 1:10:02Speaker: Amish people are listening.
- 1:10:03Speaker: We're we just, we?
- 1:10:04Speaker 2: No.
- 1:10:05Speaker 2: Hey, I loved them, man.
- 1:10:06Speaker 2: Yeah, you kidding me?
- 1:10:07Speaker 2: Al Big Al That was his name.
- 1:10:09Speaker 2: My roommate was Big Al.
- 1:10:11Speaker: Oh, big Al.
- 1:10:11Speaker: That's the guy's name.
- 1:10:12Speaker: Al, wasn't that the singer, the Amish singer that was popular back in the day.
- 1:10:16Speaker: Oh dude.
- 1:10:17Speaker: Remember that?
- 1:10:17Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 1:10:18Speaker 2: I don't know any Amish singers.
- 1:10:19Speaker: Maybe am a lot of Amish people are named Al or something.
- 1:10:21Speaker: I dunno.
- 1:10:22Speaker 2: Probably, probably.
- 1:10:24Speaker: So.
- 1:10:25Speaker 2: So anyways, no, that's all I gotta say.

- 1:10:31Speaker: Man, it, it, it makes, makes me want to go so.
- 1:10:35Speaker: I'll have to maybe get your birds mounted later for myself.
- 1:10:38Speaker: I, I'll go get my own and then we'll, hey, I know, add, add your, maybe I'll practice on them or something.
- 1:10:43Speaker 2: Well, just so you know, it's, it's if I ever fall over dead or, you know, get, run over or get whatever your name's on all these birds.
- 1:10:53Speaker 2: So,
- 1:10:53Speaker: well, don't do that anytime soon.
- 1:10:54Speaker: So you need to enjoy these for a long time.
- 1:10:56Speaker: So,
- 1:10:56Speaker 2: that's right.
- 1:10:58Speaker 2: Anyways, they've got a home after me.
