- 0:02Speaker 1: Welcome to the Wired to Hunt podcast, your home for
- 0:06Speaker 1: deer hunting news, stories and strategies, and now your host,
- 0:11Speaker 1: Mark Kenyon. Welcome to the Wired to Hunt Podcast. I'm
- 0:16Speaker 1: your host, Mark Kenyan. This is episode number two hundred
- 0:19Speaker 1: and one, and today we're discussing the latest in the
- 0:22Speaker 1: Holy Field saga. We're gonna chat about managing relationships with
- 0:26Speaker 1: neighboring hunters, our thoughts on big buck Mania, physical fitness
- 0:30Speaker 1: and hunting, and much much more below, folks, and welcome
- 0:47Speaker 1: to the Wired to Hunt Podcast, brought to you by
- 0:50Speaker 1: Sitka Gear and taking the show, we are talking so
- 1:00Speaker 1: special interruption. We are talking about something different than we
- 1:05Speaker 1: originally planned on. We had a special topic and a
- 1:08Speaker 1: guest lined up for today's show, and so me and
- 1:11Speaker 1: Dan recorded a full intro with that all in mind,
- 1:15Speaker 1: and then the last minute after recording that introduction, the
- 1:19Speaker 1: interview and guests fell through. So, being still very quick
- 1:23Speaker 1: on our toes, me and Dan decided that we could
- 1:25Speaker 1: still pull off an episode with a full BS session.
- 1:28Speaker 1: So that is what we did, and I gotta say
- 1:30Speaker 1: I think it actually turned out pretty darn good, so
- 1:33Speaker 1: so don't worry, this one is still worth listening to, Um,
- 1:36Speaker 1: we do cover some very exciting news. Uh. If you
- 1:39Speaker 1: follow Wired Hunt in other places, you already know. But
- 1:41Speaker 1: at the podcast is your only touch point, you are
- 1:43Speaker 1: in for a surprise. Um. Although maybe the title gives
- 1:47Speaker 1: this away. Um, So there's news. We also talk about
- 1:51Speaker 1: some some interesting things that we haven't touched on before
- 1:53Speaker 1: related to some controversy and challenges with neighbors. Um. We
- 1:58Speaker 1: talked about this tricky topic of working with or against
- 2:02Speaker 1: neighbors when it comes to hunting and managing deer. We
- 2:05Speaker 1: talked about quote unquote big bucks and hunting goals. Um,
- 2:09Speaker 1: and we just talked about a lot lot more. So. Yeah,
- 2:13Speaker 1: we didn't cover what we planned on covering, but it's
- 2:17Speaker 1: still something that I think it turned out pretty good.
- 2:20Speaker 1: So enough of me. I'm going to throw it back
- 2:22Speaker 1: to our originally recorded interview and then, UM, we're just
- 2:26Speaker 1: going to kind of roll as best as possible from
- 2:28Speaker 1: there with a couple of little skips and changes. Um.
- 2:31Speaker 1: But what we're just gonna get going with it. No
- 2:33Speaker 1: matter where you're at, we're all gonna be able to
- 2:35Speaker 1: learn something today. So so I'm pumped about that, dan. Um.
- 2:39Speaker 1: But before we get on the line, we need to
- 2:42Speaker 1: have our little pregame show here and I have something
- 2:45Speaker 1: exciting to share today, Dan, But before we get to that,
- 2:47Speaker 1: I want to make sure you get a chance. Um,
- 2:50Speaker 1: do you have anything you want to make sure we
- 2:52Speaker 1: talked about here? Nothing real serious, you know, here's something
- 2:57Speaker 1: that's been bouncing around and this this could be a
- 3:00Speaker 1: longer conversation at some point, but I'm putting a little
- 3:04Speaker 1: bit of thought. I don't know about it. It It just
- 3:06Speaker 1: kind of bumped into my head about potentially looking for
- 3:09Speaker 1: a lease this year in Iowa, and I, to be
- 3:14Speaker 1: honest with you, it's something I've never had to do before.
- 3:17Speaker 1: And I don't know if I am or not, but
- 3:22Speaker 1: it's something that I'm bouncing around, and to be honest
- 3:24Speaker 1: with you, I don't even know where to start to
- 3:27Speaker 1: look for, like land that people have up for lease. Yes,
- 3:33Speaker 1: that is a tricky top. It's a It's one of
- 3:36Speaker 1: those things where some people get all um, been out
- 3:41Speaker 1: of shape about leases or the idea like I mean,
- 3:46Speaker 1: like you said, this could be a whole big, separate
- 3:48Speaker 1: kind of conversation, but some people get really upset about
- 3:52Speaker 1: the fact that people lease out the property. Deer hunt
- 3:54Speaker 1: and I can understand that because it is right. Access
- 3:59Speaker 1: is getting harder and hard throughout a lot of places
- 4:01Speaker 1: in the country or deer hunt. Unless you live somewhere
- 4:02Speaker 1: where there's a ton of public land, like some portions
- 4:06Speaker 1: of the Northeast around Maine or New York. In places
- 4:08Speaker 1: like that where there's great public access, that's awesome. But
- 4:12Speaker 1: if you live like where I am in Michigan or
- 4:13Speaker 1: you in Iowa, there's not as much of that. Um.
- 4:17Speaker 1: And we've talked a lot about trying to get permission
- 4:19Speaker 1: on property, and I know you do a lot of that,
- 4:21Speaker 1: but sometimes it's a it's not sometimes it's always a challenge.
- 4:28Speaker 1: Um what what made you? What is making you want
- 4:30Speaker 1: to take this next step? Though? Are you losing access
- 4:33Speaker 1: to something you had permission on or do you just
- 4:35Speaker 1: want something a little higher quality or what? There's been
- 4:37Speaker 1: rumblings on one of the farms that I hunt, not
- 4:40Speaker 1: the main one, but on some other ones that they
- 4:43Speaker 1: might sell it. And that's that's roughly three acres that
- 4:47Speaker 1: I won't have access to anymore, you know, And and
- 4:50Speaker 1: I go, you know, sometimes it's good to have a
- 4:53Speaker 1: lot of options, especially for me, where you know, if
- 4:58Speaker 1: if because of the main farm that I do share
- 5:00Speaker 1: if the other two guys are there and they're sitting
- 5:03Speaker 1: in a good spot, I you know, I'm pretty much
- 5:07Speaker 1: just hunting the outskirts because they have their ladder stands
- 5:10Speaker 1: that they go to every time for the most part,
- 5:13Speaker 1: and I try to work around them. And I've had
- 5:16Speaker 1: had success over that over the time over the years.
- 5:18Speaker 1: But I just I don't know, I've never had a
- 5:21Speaker 1: hunting season before in my life. And all the public
- 5:25Speaker 1: land guys are gonna look at me now, like Dan,
- 5:27Speaker 1: You're such a huge pussy. Stop talking right now. You
- 5:30Speaker 1: know what I mean, because they deal with that ship
- 5:32Speaker 1: every year. But but I've never had control control And
- 5:39Speaker 1: what I mean by that is not necessarily other hunters,
- 5:41Speaker 1: but maybe the ability to play a food plot or
- 5:45Speaker 1: do some habitat work and and see how that being
- 5:48Speaker 1: able to play around with that portion of hunting. And
- 5:53Speaker 1: I don't know, it's just something that I've been playing
- 5:56Speaker 1: around with. Maybe I do that, maybe I go on
- 5:59Speaker 1: an extra out of state hunt. I don't know, we'll see. Um,
- 6:03Speaker 1: just things that I've been thinking about. You now, I
- 6:06Speaker 1: can understand that. I mean, I've had that desire a
- 6:08Speaker 1: lot too or I've always I've always not wanted to
- 6:11Speaker 1: have to pay for hunting access, so I've always tried
- 6:13Speaker 1: to get free permission. But at the same time, there's
- 6:16Speaker 1: that dream, right you watched these guys own land or
- 6:18Speaker 1: something and can do the stuff you said, you know,
- 6:20Speaker 1: actually manage a property and do. I mean, there's something
- 6:23Speaker 1: really fun about that. There's something really fun about hunting
- 6:25Speaker 1: a new spot and just figuring it out and figuring
- 6:27Speaker 1: out what the deer are doing. But there's also something
- 6:29Speaker 1: fun about having a property you really get to know
- 6:31Speaker 1: and that you get to make some changes to and
- 6:34Speaker 1: hunt that you know, and more of a management type way.
- 6:37Speaker 1: I mean, I get a kick out of both. But
- 6:39Speaker 1: it's hard. It's really hard to do that whole management
- 6:42Speaker 1: thing unless you have a lease or you have something
- 6:45Speaker 1: you own. Um. But it's tough to find a lease, dude,
- 6:49Speaker 1: It's tough. I for a long time, for years, I
- 6:52Speaker 1: was trying to find leases um while I was trying
- 6:55Speaker 1: to get ready with permission. But I always thought, you know,
- 6:56Speaker 1: if I could find a lease that's reasonable, I mean,
- 6:58Speaker 1: I'd be willing to pay a little little money to
- 7:00Speaker 1: have a quality spot, um, just because it's tough to
- 7:04Speaker 1: find quality spots around here that aren't already getting slammed. Um,
- 7:08Speaker 1: But man, you almost can't find it. Like I I've
- 7:12Speaker 1: saved money to be able to do it in the
- 7:13Speaker 1: past and just never found a place. No, never found
- 7:15Speaker 1: someone who would take my money to allow me to hunt. Um.
- 7:18Speaker 1: You know, there's all these different websites, leasing networks and
- 7:21Speaker 1: stuff where you can find these properties, but those are
- 7:24Speaker 1: kind of tough sometimes because they're usually auction sites, so
- 7:27Speaker 1: prices get bit up really high, and like every year
- 7:29Speaker 1: you need to renegotiate um. And I think they can.
- 7:33Speaker 1: I think I've never done it myself, so I don't
- 7:36Speaker 1: know exactly. I could be wrong, LEAs, but I think
- 7:37Speaker 1: I've seen where um, the property will go back up
- 7:41Speaker 1: to auction every year, or you'll be forced to pay
- 7:43Speaker 1: increase every year, and that has always kind of turned
- 7:45Speaker 1: me off. Um. The property that I found my little
- 7:50Speaker 1: lease down in southern Ohio. I found that just by
- 7:53Speaker 1: asking people for years if they knew of any place
- 7:56Speaker 1: that might have permission access or might have a lease.
- 7:58Speaker 1: And I talked to every down that area meet I
- 8:01Speaker 1: asked about, and I met a real estate agent who, um,
- 8:05Speaker 1: I said, Hey, if you ever hear of anything a
- 8:08Speaker 1: small property or a small lease or something let me know.
- 8:10Speaker 1: And then like two or two years later, something I bumped.
- 8:14Speaker 1: I bumped into him via email again and I was like, hey,
- 8:17Speaker 1: just checking in, and he's like, oh, I just happened
- 8:20Speaker 1: to hear something like that, And that's how I found
- 8:22Speaker 1: that little spot. Um. But man, I don't know how
- 8:25Speaker 1: much longer that one's gonna last. So and a lot
- 8:28Speaker 1: of it has to do with the county that I
- 8:30Speaker 1: live in versus the county that I hunt in. Our
- 8:33Speaker 1: world's apart, right, I live in between two huge I'm
- 8:36Speaker 1: not gonna say huge big for Iowa City centers, right,
- 8:40Speaker 1: and the county that I live in is pretty much
- 8:44Speaker 1: spoken for. Everything is spoken for, and if you do
- 8:46Speaker 1: get permission, there's three or four other guys on it, right.
- 8:49Speaker 1: You know, it sounds a lot like Michigan. But I
- 8:52Speaker 1: got access to some public land that's closer to home.
- 8:55Speaker 1: But the public land is overwhelmed throughout the year, and
- 9:00Speaker 1: I'm just trying to I don't know. I'm the more
- 9:03Speaker 1: I talk about it, and this is one of those
- 9:05Speaker 1: things where here's what's gonna happen. I'm gonna do some
- 9:08Speaker 1: research on it. I'm gonna think about it, and then
- 9:10Speaker 1: because I'm like such a cheapass, I won't go through
- 9:13Speaker 1: with it unless I, you know, find something really really good.
- 9:17Speaker 1: And at that point, I don't know, I'll probably decide
- 9:22Speaker 1: not to do it. But like I said, it's just
- 9:24Speaker 1: something I've been thinking about. Keep us posted. I gotta
- 9:29Speaker 1: believed that stuff probably isn't going to be too cheap
- 9:31Speaker 1: out in your neck of the woods. Oh no, absolutely not.
- 9:34Speaker 1: And it's everybody is getting keen to it, you know,
- 9:39Speaker 1: for the most part. If I you know, I'm I'm
- 9:41Speaker 1: a local guy, right, I'm from Iowa, so I I
- 9:43Speaker 1: can have a community, you know, I can communicate with
- 9:46Speaker 1: these people and say I went to high school with
- 9:48Speaker 1: your grandson, or you know, I I know so and so,
- 9:52Speaker 1: or hey you know, hey, didn't you used to work
- 9:54Speaker 1: with my dad or something like that, and that that's
- 9:56Speaker 1: a good end for getting permission. But you know, now
- 10:00Speaker 1: these people are like, I can give you permission or
- 10:03Speaker 1: I can set you know, lease it to who cares
- 10:08Speaker 1: who I lease it too, because I'll be making money, right, So,
- 10:12Speaker 1: I don't know, it's and here's here's another thing that
- 10:14Speaker 1: I've been running into lately. And I know I'm taking
- 10:18Speaker 1: up a lot of time here, but um, I knock
- 10:22Speaker 1: on someone's door and I said, hey, man, I'm just
- 10:26Speaker 1: curious if you allow bow hunting on your property. No,
- 10:29Speaker 1: we already have somebody who hunts our property. Okay, cool.
- 10:34Speaker 1: Uh you know, you know, can I go turkey hunting
- 10:37Speaker 1: or shed hunting? Yeah, you can go shed hunting. That's okay.
- 10:39Speaker 1: It's like go shed hunting. And then through shed hunting,
- 10:42Speaker 1: I see that there's no tree stands on the property.
- 10:44Speaker 1: There's no there's no sign of anybody hunting the property.
- 10:48Speaker 1: But yet they kind of wrap all hunting. Even though
- 10:51Speaker 1: I tell them I'm just a bow hunter. I don't
- 10:53Speaker 1: want to gun hunt. There's still something that I need
- 10:56Speaker 1: to do better, as I guess, selling myself to allow
- 10:59Speaker 1: my to get on some of these pieces that you
- 11:02Speaker 1: know we already have someone on or you know we don't.
- 11:05Speaker 1: You know, we save it for the family, Yet nobody
- 11:08Speaker 1: hunts that piece of property. So do you when you
- 11:11Speaker 1: go up and knock on these doors, what do you
- 11:13Speaker 1: do about your your four fingered hand. Do you hide
- 11:16Speaker 1: that or do you do you like just stick it
- 11:19Speaker 1: in their face and like wave it in front of
- 11:21Speaker 1: their eyes because maybe you're just scaring these people off
- 11:23Speaker 1: with the old snapping turtle. Nope, nope, nope. Here's how
- 11:27Speaker 1: it has the opposite effect. I go to shake the hand,
- 11:31Speaker 1: they notice it, and I tell them I'm from the area.
- 11:34Speaker 1: They automatically assume that it got caught in some kind
- 11:38Speaker 1: of farm equipment. Therefore, I have street credits. So this
- 11:41Speaker 1: is your this is your that's my inn, that's part
- 11:44Speaker 1: of my inn. How you're lucky, then you're very lucky.
- 11:46Speaker 1: I don't have that kind of thing. Dude. I'm telling
- 11:48Speaker 1: you need to cut a finger or grow beard. Unfortunately,
- 11:53Speaker 1: I don't want to lose a finger. I can't grow beard.
- 11:55Speaker 1: I look like him twelve. Um, I'm doomed as far
- 11:58Speaker 1: as getting permission. But I'll tell you what this whole conversation.
- 12:02Speaker 1: You know, the fact that it's harder and harder to
- 12:03Speaker 1: get access, the fact that more and more properties are
- 12:06Speaker 1: getting leased up, and it's getting expensive in a lot
- 12:08Speaker 1: of country parts of the country. This just goes back
- 12:11Speaker 1: to again, why both you and I care so much
- 12:15Speaker 1: about trying to keep the places that we do have public.
- 12:18Speaker 1: We gotta make sure those places stay public. We've got
- 12:20Speaker 1: to make sure they stay available and healthy. Um, because
- 12:24Speaker 1: this this issue is not going away, like access is
- 12:28Speaker 1: going to get harder and harder and harder. So I
- 12:31Speaker 1: don't want to be the guy who says this, but
- 12:33Speaker 1: it is becoming a pay to play type sport the
- 12:38Speaker 1: more I look into it and try to get into it.
- 12:40Speaker 1: I mean, you can either go out and buy land.
- 12:43Speaker 1: And as easy as some of the past guests make
- 12:45Speaker 1: it seem, you know, like hey, you know, buying hunting
- 12:49Speaker 1: ground is easy, it's really not that easy when you
- 12:53Speaker 1: when you think about you got you still have to
- 12:54Speaker 1: have money in your budget to pay for it. Uh.
- 12:57Speaker 1: And it's about priorities, right, but still than than leasing
- 13:01Speaker 1: if you want to hunt. I mean I've lost several
- 13:03Speaker 1: properties in the past that uh, either have been purchased
- 13:08Speaker 1: and new hunters have come in or have been leased
- 13:10Speaker 1: out and they say, well, we're gonna lease it now
- 13:13Speaker 1: and you can lease it if you want, but we're
- 13:15Speaker 1: gonna lease it. And then obviously back in the day,
- 13:18Speaker 1: I couldn't afford it. So yeah, no, I've had the
- 13:20Speaker 1: same thing happened. But I think it it comes down
- 13:23Speaker 1: to one of twoth like to your to your point,
- 13:26Speaker 1: like yes, it is becoming more and more pay to play,
- 13:28Speaker 1: But I do want to make sure that people listening
- 13:32Speaker 1: don't think that's how it has to be, because you
- 13:34Speaker 1: can still get it done without or like I think
- 13:38Speaker 1: episode two was a perfect example of that. Those guys
- 13:40Speaker 1: hunt all public or by permission and they're just killing it.
- 13:44Speaker 1: And hell, who were gonna talk to today? He's hunting
- 13:46Speaker 1: public plan. I mean, I think it just means you
- 13:48Speaker 1: gotta work harder and work in different ways to make
- 13:50Speaker 1: it happen, but you can still you can still have
- 13:53Speaker 1: a great you know, great hunting opportunities. This is different absolutely,
- 13:58Speaker 1: So yeah, dude, I hear you. And Um, I have
- 14:03Speaker 1: a story to tell today that comes off of a
- 14:05Speaker 1: little piece of property that I got permission on many
- 14:08Speaker 1: years ago. Um, that is a nice little success story
- 14:13Speaker 1: and I want to share that with you today, Dan, Okay,
- 14:15Speaker 1: I want to hear it. So many many years ago,
- 14:20Speaker 1: I saw buck, nice eight point buck came out into
- 14:23Speaker 1: a food plot. This is a property I permission on,
- 14:25Speaker 1: but I did have permission to plant food plots and stuff.
- 14:28Speaker 1: This is the night before Hunting season two thousand fifteen.
- 14:30Speaker 1: This buck stepped out. I was watching from a hillside
- 14:33Speaker 1: off in the distance scouting. I said, that's a nice
- 14:35Speaker 1: look at eight point dear. The next night, opening night
- 14:38Speaker 1: above season, I killed another buck. Because I killed that buck,
- 14:41Speaker 1: I decided not to shoot that nice eight point dear
- 14:45Speaker 1: That December, I decided to call that eight point buck
- 14:48Speaker 1: holy Field. In two thousand you know where I'm going
- 14:53Speaker 1: with this. In two thousand sixteen, we talked about him forever.
- 14:57Speaker 1: I chose not to kill him by the end of
- 14:58Speaker 1: the season. In two thousands seventeen, I hunted him all season.
- 15:01Speaker 1: We've talked about him for the entire year, and several
- 15:06Speaker 1: podcast episodes, you and me talked about how I believe
- 15:09Speaker 1: that deer is dead after three years of hunting him.
- 15:12Speaker 1: I thought he was dead and gone. I thought the
- 15:14Speaker 1: neighbor shot him. I was pretty bummed about it. I
- 15:17Speaker 1: moved on, honest to goodness. I really one was like,
- 15:21Speaker 1: all right, it's done. And then last week I was
- 15:27Speaker 1: kind of having like one of those days at work
- 15:28Speaker 1: and I work at home, but um, one of those
- 15:30Speaker 1: days at work, I was kind of black, like just
- 15:32Speaker 1: as like four o'clock, and I wasn't having a very
- 15:34Speaker 1: good day, just wasn't super productive, wasn't really into it.
- 15:36Speaker 1: I was like, you know, I just need to go
- 15:38Speaker 1: get some fresh air, take a walk. So I took
- 15:40Speaker 1: my dog and went over to this property, and I
- 15:43Speaker 1: just thought, you know what, I'm just gonna kind of
- 15:44Speaker 1: walk some edges, stay out of the good stuff. I'm
- 15:46Speaker 1: not gonna bump any deer. I just want to go
- 15:48Speaker 1: for a little walk along like some cornfield edges and
- 15:51Speaker 1: um a little bit of a few timber spots, just
- 15:53Speaker 1: just to enjoy it for a little bit. And I'm
- 15:56Speaker 1: walking through the standard pines and I see times sticking
- 16:00Speaker 1: out of the snow right next to the trunk of
- 16:03Speaker 1: a tree. I walk over and pull this shut out.
- 16:08Speaker 1: And man, I still have a hard time believing this,
- 16:14Speaker 1: but I was holding Holy Fields two thousand seventeen. Antler,
- 16:18Speaker 1: he made it. What was your reaction? Like, here's what.
- 16:24Speaker 1: Here's what happens. When I find a shed of any
- 16:27Speaker 1: kind of notoriety, whether it's big or I recognize it,
- 16:30Speaker 1: I do kind of like a double take with oh yeah,
- 16:34Speaker 1: like just well, yeah, you know, something real real calm, right,
- 16:38Speaker 1: because I don't want to share. I don't want to
- 16:40Speaker 1: scare the rest of the sheds that I'm looking for, right, so,
- 16:44Speaker 1: so what was your reaction when you when you pulled
- 16:47Speaker 1: this when what I like to call I learned this
- 16:50Speaker 1: term from some guys in Wisconsin. They call it scooping
- 16:54Speaker 1: up there. We're gonna go do some scooping and they
- 16:57Speaker 1: just you know, they walk in the woods and they
- 16:58Speaker 1: scoop antlers. So you scooped this this antler? What what?
- 17:03Speaker 1: What was your sound? Did you make a sound? Man?
- 17:05Speaker 1: I didn't make it was weird. Usually I do it
- 17:08Speaker 1: usually like hoot and holler. I'm so excited about it.
- 17:10Speaker 1: But I think because it was a shock, I wasn't
- 17:13Speaker 1: even looking for sheds. I just was out for a
- 17:15Speaker 1: little walk, so I wasn't even I mean, once I
- 17:18Speaker 1: was out there, I was like, well, I better keep
- 17:19Speaker 1: an eye out just in case. But I wasn't expecting anything.
- 17:22Speaker 1: Um and so it was just like, whoa, there's a nailer, Like,
- 17:26Speaker 1: oh my god, I can't believe it. And then oh man,
- 17:28Speaker 1: that looks like a nice sailer. But I could just
- 17:30Speaker 1: see the tips of the time sticking out. Everything else's
- 17:32Speaker 1: covered with snow. When I pulled it out, I was like,
- 17:33Speaker 1: holy crap, this is one of the this is the
- 17:36Speaker 1: number one or number two, like best shed I've ever
- 17:38Speaker 1: found in Michigan. I can't believe this. And then as
- 17:41Speaker 1: I'm looking at I'm like, I remember looking at the base,
- 17:44Speaker 1: like near the base and the brow time and thinking,
- 17:48Speaker 1: no where like this. What I'm seeing looks very, very familiar,
- 17:53Speaker 1: but it couldn't be possible. And I just sat there
- 17:54Speaker 1: kind of turning it around in my hand, like I
- 17:57Speaker 1: must be wrong, I must be wrong, I'm to be wrong.
- 18:01Speaker 1: But I kept saying this, this looks like holy field,
- 18:04Speaker 1: this deer I've I've hunted for three years, this deer
- 18:06Speaker 1: that I've obsessed over for so long a time. There's
- 18:11Speaker 1: no way I'm actually holding his antler and that he
- 18:12Speaker 1: actually is alive. I thought I thought it was done,
- 18:14Speaker 1: but I ended up pulled up my phone and went
- 18:17Speaker 1: back and looked at all pictures of his because the
- 18:19Speaker 1: second thing I thought was, Okay, maybe this is actually
- 18:21Speaker 1: his antler, but it must be from two thousand sixteen.
- 18:23Speaker 1: This must be an old angler because the ends of
- 18:25Speaker 1: his times of three two of his times we were
- 18:28Speaker 1: very chewed um. But it looked at the at the
- 18:31Speaker 1: pedicle and the base looked fresh. I'm like, man, this
- 18:33Speaker 1: looks fresh. The antler looks great except for the chee marks.
- 18:36Speaker 1: But there's no way. So I go and I look
- 18:38Speaker 1: back at the pictures and then when I pulled up,
- 18:40Speaker 1: I've got a picture that compares his trail camera photo
- 18:43Speaker 1: from two thousand and fifteen sixteen seventeen. And that's when
- 18:46Speaker 1: I remembered that his left side in two thousand sixteen,
- 18:50Speaker 1: his main beam was busted off, the last like four
- 18:53Speaker 1: of it, and this was the left side. So this
- 18:55Speaker 1: was this had to be his seventeen aniler because it
- 18:58Speaker 1: wasn't busted. Um. So then I started like giggling. I
- 19:01Speaker 1: started like laughing like a little school child, like you
- 19:05Speaker 1: gotta be bullshitting me. Oh man, it was nuts. I
- 19:07Speaker 1: just sat there just like oh my god, just doing
- 19:11Speaker 1: that for like five minutes. Um. And then it just
- 19:15Speaker 1: kind of took my whole like stoke level for the
- 19:18Speaker 1: two thousand eighteen season to a different place. I would
- 19:21Speaker 1: just so like rejuvenate with like a new excitement, um
- 19:25Speaker 1: that he's still out there. And uh. I did some
- 19:28Speaker 1: more walking around a little bit, didn't find any more antlers,
- 19:31Speaker 1: but um, you gotta match him up, dude. I would
- 19:33Speaker 1: love to match him up. So once the snow melts
- 19:36Speaker 1: we just got dumped on with. We've got like the
- 19:38Speaker 1: most snow I've had here in this area, probably since
- 19:41Speaker 1: I moved down here. Um So once the snow melts,
- 19:44Speaker 1: I'm gonna be getting after it hard. So just imagine
- 19:49Speaker 1: the Holy Field match set sitting right next to the
- 19:52Speaker 1: Mark Kenyan match set. That would be a pretty sweet site.
- 19:55Speaker 1: That's a that's like a whole shelf. You need to
- 19:57Speaker 1: build a shelf just for those I know there's a
- 20:01Speaker 1: there's some serious bone here we're talking about. I know, man,
- 20:05Speaker 1: It just yeah, it changes things. I'm excited, I'll tell you.
- 20:09Speaker 1: I already started thinking as soon as I found it,
- 20:11Speaker 1: and as soon as I was like, Okay, Holy Fields alive.
- 20:15Speaker 1: The hunt is still going. One of the first things
- 20:18Speaker 1: I thought though, was I'm not going to get so
- 20:22Speaker 1: obsessed about him again, Like d It's it's February, right,
- 20:28Speaker 1: you have all summer to think about it and change
- 20:30Speaker 1: your mind. I mean yeah, and and knowing my nature,
- 20:33Speaker 1: I'm very likely to get all worked up about it again.
- 20:36Speaker 1: But I just feel like he's the odds are so slim.
- 20:41Speaker 1: There's so many other factors. I don't want to get
- 20:44Speaker 1: so worked up. About it as I was last year.
- 20:46Speaker 1: Negative thoughts negative, Well, well that would be the best option.
- 20:53Speaker 1: But I'm just trying to Maybe I'm just trying to
- 20:55Speaker 1: prepare myself for um, like I want to. I want
- 20:58Speaker 1: to enjoy this sea more than I did last year,
- 21:01Speaker 1: and like, looking, what's funny is I last week, after
- 21:05Speaker 1: finding holy Field sheds, I went back and looked at
- 21:08Speaker 1: the footage, and I realized that I have not looked
- 21:11Speaker 1: at any of my footage from last season, not since October.
- 21:15Speaker 1: So everything that happened from October this is late October
- 21:18Speaker 1: through the end of December, I've never once went back
- 21:22Speaker 1: and looked at any of it because I was so bitter.
- 21:24Speaker 1: I think I was so like that, like I didn't
- 21:26Speaker 1: even want to. So I had never even looked back
- 21:28Speaker 1: at the videos I had of holy Field for my
- 21:30Speaker 1: encounters of them last year. I just, you know, just
- 21:32Speaker 1: wasn't in a good place. So I finally went back
- 21:35Speaker 1: and looked at them, like, oh man, this is so
- 21:37Speaker 1: cool getting to see the really of these experiences and
- 21:39Speaker 1: stuff again. And I don't want to be in that
- 21:41Speaker 1: place again, where like I was so obsessed during the season,
- 21:45Speaker 1: so wound up with just the ultimate goal that I
- 21:47Speaker 1: wasn't enjoying. And and I said I wasn't enjoying, I
- 21:50Speaker 1: mean I was still enjoying. I love every single time
- 21:52Speaker 1: out there hunting, but I was just allowing myself to
- 21:54Speaker 1: get so um overstressed when it comes to it. So
- 21:58Speaker 1: this year, yeah, I'm gonna do a ton of work
- 22:01Speaker 1: to try to kill this deer, but I am going
- 22:05Speaker 1: to not view like the ultimate. Um, I don't know
- 22:11Speaker 1: what am I trying say. I'm not gonna let that
- 22:12Speaker 1: define like my season. I'm still gonna go do other stuff.
- 22:14Speaker 1: I'm not going to cancel all my other trips just
- 22:16Speaker 1: because I have to kill this deer. I'm still gonna
- 22:19Speaker 1: go all do some more fun stuff out of state. Um,
- 22:21Speaker 1: if a different nice buck shows up in the area,
- 22:23Speaker 1: I'm not opposed to shooting a different deer. Um, I'm
- 22:26Speaker 1: not gonna this isn't gonna be holy fielder bus this year.
- 22:29Speaker 1: It's gonna be I really would like to kill holy Field.
- 22:31Speaker 1: I'm gonna do everything I can, But I'm approaching the
- 22:34Speaker 1: two thousand eighteen season more as I want to have
- 22:37Speaker 1: a fun, exciting, diverse hunting season. That's at least what
- 22:41Speaker 1: I'm saying today. You know why I'm laughing because because
- 22:45Speaker 1: here's what's here's what's gonna happen. You have all these
- 22:48Speaker 1: plans already about going and doing fun things, and you're
- 22:51Speaker 1: not gonna put any pressure on yourself in Chase holy
- 22:55Speaker 1: Field in this year, that bastard is going to have
- 22:58Speaker 1: his biggest rap and he's gonna straight blow up. And
- 23:03Speaker 1: you're gonna like this is like, this is the biggest
- 23:06Speaker 1: Michigan buck I've ever seen in my entire life. And
- 23:09Speaker 1: you know, yeah, You're right, I'm probably gonna get all
- 23:13Speaker 1: crazy about it again. You're gonna get worked up again.
- 23:17Speaker 1: I've never had a buck like this. You know this
- 23:19Speaker 1: will be I've never anywhere I've hunted had a buck
- 23:22Speaker 1: that I've followed for four years in a row. So
- 23:24Speaker 1: this will be the longest history I've ever had with
- 23:26Speaker 1: a buck. Um and it are already was that the
- 23:29Speaker 1: deepest history, and now adding another year, this just takes
- 23:32Speaker 1: it to a whole another level. He'll be the oldest
- 23:33Speaker 1: Michigan buck I've ever had a chance to actively hunt. Um.
- 23:38Speaker 1: So I'm excited, right, I'm excited, But I'm excited for you,
- 23:42Speaker 1: Mark Man. There's that survivor buck. He made it. He'll
- 23:45Speaker 1: be a really nice four year old. There's the mystery
- 23:47Speaker 1: giant who's in the neck of the woods who I
- 23:49Speaker 1: saw in January, so he survived the hunting season. UM.
- 23:53Speaker 1: So there's there's options. Plus I I UH and working
- 23:57Speaker 1: on some new permissions that I'll talk about later. UM.
- 24:01Speaker 1: I might have some new access to some new stuff.
- 24:03Speaker 1: But I'm which I'm excited about. UM. I think it's
- 24:07Speaker 1: about time for UH Dan Johnson Mark Kenyon podcast in
- 24:10Speaker 1: a couple of weeks catch up. Given how long we've
- 24:12Speaker 1: been talking here in our predumn show, UM, lots to
- 24:16Speaker 1: lots of talk about. So I guess though, we should
- 24:19Speaker 1: wrap this one up though, so we can get our
- 24:21Speaker 1: guests on. So let's pause here for our sick story
- 24:25Speaker 1: of the day, and then we'll get right back at you.
- 24:29Speaker 1: For this week's sit of story, we're joined by Sitka
- 24:32Speaker 1: Ambassador Kyle Hansen, who tells us about harvesting his first
- 24:35Speaker 1: book with our three equipment November one to two thousand
- 24:39Speaker 1: and seventeen. Conditions were perfect to go in and hunt
- 24:43Speaker 1: the stand that I had hung the weekend prior for
- 24:46Speaker 1: a deer that I've been after named Kong Kong was
- 24:49Speaker 1: the number one target buck for the area that I've
- 24:51Speaker 1: been after and so on that day. Luckily, I was
- 24:54Speaker 1: able to get out of work early, and unfortunately I
- 24:57Speaker 1: still got to my stand late, at about three pm.
- 25:00Speaker 1: I was only there for about an hour and a
- 25:01Speaker 1: half before Kong stepped out in the field. Fortunate for me,
- 25:05Speaker 1: Kong ended up ben betting out in the middle of
- 25:07Speaker 1: his clover plot, only about fifty yards away. He took
- 25:10Speaker 1: a nap there for about forty five minutes before he
- 25:13Speaker 1: got up and started working his way over towards me.
- 25:16Speaker 1: When he finally came into range, he looked the other way.
- 25:19Speaker 1: I drew held and I let one fly hit him
- 25:22Speaker 1: square broadside, and he ran off. I was not able
- 25:27Speaker 1: to recover him that day, however, because it was almost
- 25:31Speaker 1: nightfall at that point and he ran off into the
- 25:33Speaker 1: neighboring property. Um the following day we were able to
- 25:36Speaker 1: recover him without much of a problem, although he did
- 25:39Speaker 1: end up it's pretty deep ravines and it took the
- 25:41Speaker 1: rest of the day to get out. On Kyle's hunt,
- 25:45Speaker 1: he was wearing sick of fonetic system. If you'd like
- 25:47Speaker 1: to create a sick of story of your own, or
- 25:49Speaker 1: to learn more about technical hunting apparel, visit sitka gear
- 25:53Speaker 1: dot com. All right, so, um, we had a guest
- 26:00Speaker 1: find up and it kind of fell through, mostly because
- 26:04Speaker 1: of my poor planning. So, man, yeah, you know, I've
- 26:10Speaker 1: got a almost a three week old baby. I'm sleeping
- 26:14Speaker 1: on the couch. I'm not I'm just not functioning very
- 26:18Speaker 1: well as a human being, I guess. So, no, guest,
- 26:21Speaker 1: We're gonna just do a full Mark and dan Bs episode.
- 26:24Speaker 1: So we've talked a little about how you wanted, how
- 26:27Speaker 1: you're thinking about. Least we talked about me discovering Holy
- 26:30Speaker 1: fields shed Um, what else do you want to talk about?
- 26:34Speaker 1: We can we can talk about what you got an idea?
- 26:36Speaker 1: What do you want to have a question for you?
- 26:38Speaker 1: It's random? Okay. So there's nights when I'm in my office,
- 26:43Speaker 1: right and I so I my my office, my my desk,
- 26:48Speaker 1: my computer is all inside of a closet. It just
- 26:51Speaker 1: makes the room easier, right, So sometimes I turn around.
- 26:56Speaker 1: Do you ever do this where you just sit and
- 27:00Speaker 1: stare at your mount's or your shed antlers and just
- 27:03Speaker 1: like replay the memories and stories in your head? Yes,
- 27:08Speaker 1: I absolutely, dude, that is so fun. And it's like
- 27:12Speaker 1: it's it's a form of entertainment that you have to
- 27:15Speaker 1: use your own brain. I think that's awesome now that
- 27:18Speaker 1: that's like my number one reason why I like to
- 27:20Speaker 1: mount deer is to be able to visually you know, remember,
- 27:25Speaker 1: have that visual que and then you just sit there.
- 27:27Speaker 1: I spend so much every time I walk into my office,
- 27:29Speaker 1: I walked through my little man cave and go past
- 27:31Speaker 1: these wall mounts, and I just stop and stare a
- 27:34Speaker 1: lot of the time and just like look and just
- 27:35Speaker 1: think about that deer, that experience that hunt. Um, unless
- 27:39Speaker 1: your hunter, I can understand. I can. I can understand
- 27:41Speaker 1: why non hunters look at that is maybe like it's
- 27:44Speaker 1: kind of weird, But as a hunter, I think, Man,
- 27:46Speaker 1: they're they're they're meaningful. I'm pumped. I mean every time
- 27:51Speaker 1: we look at them, I'm pumped. And I'm especially pumped
- 27:53Speaker 1: after finding the Holy Field. Shed My just I'm just
- 27:56Speaker 1: like the last week, like I'm always I'm always pretty
- 27:59Speaker 1: excited abou deer hunting, but usually like by late December,
- 28:04Speaker 1: I'm a little bit burnt out. Like I'm okay, I'm
- 28:06Speaker 1: like I start looking at elk hunting magazines or I
- 28:08Speaker 1: start thinking about backpacking trips or fly fishing trips. And
- 28:11Speaker 1: then at some point I get back to one fifty
- 28:15Speaker 1: percent white tail mania and it hit me, like late January,
- 28:20Speaker 1: early February, I'm right back to all right, what can
- 28:23Speaker 1: I be doing? What should I be thinking about? I
- 28:25Speaker 1: was studying maps last night. My baby was sleeping and
- 28:28Speaker 1: his little baston that in my office. Um, because me
- 28:31Speaker 1: and did I tell you about my shift system? They mean,
- 28:33Speaker 1: Kylie have now oh to make sure that we can
- 28:36Speaker 1: still get some sleep. We've split up the night into
- 28:38Speaker 1: like three to four hour increments. So the first shift,
- 28:41Speaker 1: I go in my office and I take the kid
- 28:44Speaker 1: and try to get into sleep. And he's actually been
- 28:46Speaker 1: doing very well. Knock on wood, he's actually doing really well.
- 28:48Speaker 1: So he's been sleeping, but we're in separate rooms so
- 28:51Speaker 1: that if he is waking up and making noise, at
- 28:53Speaker 1: least the other person can sleep. Um, So he's in
- 28:56Speaker 1: baston that I'm in my office studying maps, reading the
- 28:59Speaker 1: most recent North American whitetail, looking at the trail camera pictures. Um,
- 29:03Speaker 1: and it's like eleven o'clock at night. So that's where
- 29:06Speaker 1: my head is there right now. So what happens when
- 29:10Speaker 1: the reality of you not having lactating breasts comes into
- 29:14Speaker 1: play here, because there are times when you know, I
- 29:18Speaker 1: can stay up with a kid all I want, but
- 29:21Speaker 1: if he wants the booby, I don't have the booby.
- 29:24Speaker 1: So far now, I don't know if it's going to change,
- 29:26Speaker 1: and I want to, like ask the universe too for
- 29:29Speaker 1: like permission. This is like, Universe, please give him permission
- 29:33Speaker 1: to speak freely here without jinks, like I don't want
- 29:35Speaker 1: to get jinks here and have things ruined. But so
- 29:40Speaker 1: far he has not been like bad at all. Like
- 29:44Speaker 1: he occasionally, like the first few days early on, there
- 29:47Speaker 1: were some times when whenever you laid him down in
- 29:51Speaker 1: his bassonet or the packing play or whatever at night
- 29:53Speaker 1: to go to sleep, he would wake up as soon
- 29:55Speaker 1: as you laid him down or you lay him down,
- 29:56Speaker 1: and like ten minutes later he'd wake up and start crying.
- 29:59Speaker 1: And then as soon as you held him though, if
- 30:00Speaker 1: you held him and rocked him a little bit, or
- 30:02Speaker 1: like held him on your chest or something, he'd fall
- 30:04Speaker 1: asleep and he would sleep straight through. Um. So that's
- 30:08Speaker 1: basically what where it's at. Either he sleeps right away,
- 30:10Speaker 1: you put him down and he just conks out and
- 30:11Speaker 1: he's out and he sleeps all the way until you
- 30:13Speaker 1: wake him up again for his next feeding. Or if
- 30:16Speaker 1: he does get fussy and makes noise, I can just
- 30:18Speaker 1: pick him up and hold him and then he'll shut
- 30:20Speaker 1: back up and go to sleep. So I haven't got
- 30:23Speaker 1: to the point yet where he's super upset and will
- 30:26Speaker 1: not calm for anything but the but the milk. Um,
- 30:32Speaker 1: so knock on wood. That's definitely on the wood. Yeah,
- 30:37Speaker 1: so we'll we'll see if that changes. But here in
- 30:40Speaker 1: the next week or two, um, my wife is going
- 30:42Speaker 1: to start pumping, so I'll have the what do you
- 30:46Speaker 1: call it the bottle as an option. Um. But yeah,
- 30:50Speaker 1: I mean he I'm just like crossing all my fingers
- 30:53Speaker 1: and toes to make sure this doesn't change. But he's
- 30:55Speaker 1: been super chill, like really good. I mean he's lately
- 30:58Speaker 1: the last week or like, I take him to my room,
- 31:01Speaker 1: to my office and put him down. He sleeps the
- 31:03Speaker 1: full three hours, and then I go and bring him
- 31:05Speaker 1: over to my wife. She feeds him, and then he
- 31:07Speaker 1: sleeps the straight three hours again. She wakes up again,
- 31:10Speaker 1: feeds him. He sleeps straight through after that. I mean,
- 31:12Speaker 1: he's been Golden lately. Um so, my little my little
- 31:18Speaker 1: buddies cooperating well so far. You know, I'm I want
- 31:22Speaker 1: to say this, Emmett. Is his name right, Everett Everett? Okay, Everett,
- 31:28Speaker 1: that's right, Everett, dude, He's named after you. How could
- 31:31Speaker 1: you forget that? Everett Daniel? Ever Daniel? I do that right? Okay,
- 31:36Speaker 1: all right, Everett dude. That name sounds like gun slinger, right,
- 31:42Speaker 1: like wild West gun slinger type. That's what I was thinking.
- 31:47Speaker 1: Do you like that? I like that? Everett Kenyon? And
- 31:50Speaker 1: and for short, I think I'm calling Rhett so Rhett Kenyon.
- 31:54Speaker 1: I think that's got a good a good ring to
- 31:57Speaker 1: Everett Kenyon. Now, I I apologize in advance of this
- 32:01Speaker 1: comment if it's offends somebody, but I really don't care.
- 32:05Speaker 1: And but but Everett Kenyan sounds like a Western gun
- 32:13Speaker 1: slinger with a little bit of Indian blood in him, right,
- 32:17Speaker 1: so you know, just like hey, he knows everything? Now,
- 32:22Speaker 1: uh huh? Did ever I used? Did I ever tell
- 32:25Speaker 1: you this? I used to think when I was a
- 32:27Speaker 1: kid growing up, I thought for sure my grandpa was
- 32:29Speaker 1: a Native American, like I thought, I thought it was
- 32:31Speaker 1: a quarter Indian. My whole life, not my whole life.
- 32:33Speaker 1: But until I was old enough to realized that wasn't
- 32:38Speaker 1: the case, because he was he was very dark, complexed,
- 32:40Speaker 1: very tan. He just had he had a look that
- 32:42Speaker 1: looked to him like, I don't know, like you see
- 32:46Speaker 1: in pictures from back in the day of Native Americans,
- 32:50Speaker 1: like just a worn, leathered face. Um. And I'm not
- 32:54Speaker 1: trying to stereotype of generalize anything now, I'm just saying
- 32:56Speaker 1: some of these pictures you saw in back in the day,
- 32:59Speaker 1: my grandpa just had that similar look, and so I
- 33:01Speaker 1: always thought. And plus, he was this ultimate woodsman. I mean,
- 33:04Speaker 1: he seemed to know everything about the forests and the
- 33:07Speaker 1: woods and deer and fish and everything. So as a kid,
- 33:09Speaker 1: I was like, Okay, my grandpa was a Native American. Um, alright,
- 33:12Speaker 1: let's do this thing. Um. So it makes sense maybe
- 33:17Speaker 1: that my son has got a little bit of a
- 33:20Speaker 1: ring to that to his name. But interestingly, his his
- 33:23Speaker 1: first name actually is my mom's maiden name. That's what
- 33:27Speaker 1: ultimately gave us the idea for it. Nice. So, yeah,
- 33:31Speaker 1: the more you know, the more you know. But how
- 33:34Speaker 1: do we start on kids? Yeah, because you're talking, yeah,
- 33:38Speaker 1: mounts and shifts and office. You know the Kevin Bacon thing, right,
- 33:43Speaker 1: so like separation or whatever. But I never did ask
- 33:48Speaker 1: you about what you're doing with your Caribou mount. Yeah,
- 33:53Speaker 1: I got it. I got it. You're amounted, and um,
- 33:57Speaker 1: the issue with it is it's so big, um, And
- 34:00Speaker 1: I don't have very tall ceilings in my house. Um
- 34:03Speaker 1: that it takes up like two thirds of the wall,
- 34:05Speaker 1: like from from the floor to the ceiling, the mount
- 34:08Speaker 1: takes up two thirds of it. Um. So it's actually
- 34:11Speaker 1: in our like dining room on the wall. And it
- 34:13Speaker 1: actually just started like the anchors that we had attached
- 34:17Speaker 1: to in the wall, one of them started pulling out,
- 34:20Speaker 1: so I just had to take it down. And it's
- 34:22Speaker 1: it's not on the wall right now. I gotta I
- 34:25Speaker 1: gotta figure out a better way to get a mounted
- 34:26Speaker 1: up there. But it's pretty cool seeing that thing every
- 34:29Speaker 1: day too and thinking back on that trip. What is this?
- 34:33Speaker 1: Did you ever get that scored? Oh no, I've got
- 34:36Speaker 1: no idea. I've had no idea how to score one
- 34:38Speaker 1: of those things because it looks huge and I don't
- 34:40Speaker 1: know what. I saw a picture on Instagram the other
- 34:43Speaker 1: day of a guy who shot at Cariboo and he's like, hey,
- 34:44Speaker 1: this is Boone and Crockett caribou uh top seventy ever taken.
- 34:49Speaker 1: And and then I saw a picture of yours, and
- 34:52Speaker 1: yours look bigger than his. So I don't know, I
- 34:56Speaker 1: don't I don't think it's like that big because we
- 34:58Speaker 1: ended up, like the last day more maybe the last
- 35:02Speaker 1: two days of the trip, we saw another couple of
- 35:04Speaker 1: caribou that we're like, okay, yeah, that's definitely bigger than
- 35:07Speaker 1: the ones that we all shot. Um, so this is
- 35:11Speaker 1: definitely probably the top percentage or top couple percent of
- 35:14Speaker 1: all the carib balls we saw, but it wasn't the
- 35:17Speaker 1: very very biggest. But shoot, I don't care if this
- 35:20Speaker 1: thing was amazing and he tastes very good. Caribou meat
- 35:24Speaker 1: tastes very good right here. Yeah, definitely a hunt um
- 35:30Speaker 1: worth trying to get up and do someday. Um. I
- 35:32Speaker 1: don't know if how i'll her real do hunt quite
- 35:34Speaker 1: like that again, but it would be cool to get
- 35:36Speaker 1: up maybe on the north slope you can go up
- 35:39Speaker 1: there's that Hall road you can do a hunt off
- 35:41Speaker 1: of or something like that awesome country. So but um, but, dear, dear, dear,
- 35:50Speaker 1: So I want to talk a little bit about your
- 35:57Speaker 1: goals right now as far as what you're gonna be doing,
- 36:00Speaker 1: because we talked to the very end of the two
- 36:02Speaker 1: thousand seventeen season kind of about reviewing the past year,
- 36:06Speaker 1: and we looked forward a little bit into two thousand
- 36:09Speaker 1: and eighteen. But now that we're a couple of months in,
- 36:11Speaker 1: where's your head as far as big changes you're making?
- 36:14Speaker 1: Like already at least maybe maybe you haven't done this yet,
- 36:17Speaker 1: but I've already been thinking a lot through different things
- 36:19Speaker 1: I'm going to be doing differently, like my main projects
- 36:21Speaker 1: I want to work on already this spring and summer.
- 36:24Speaker 1: Is there anything already top of mind for you that
- 36:26Speaker 1: you're focused on? Well, I'm fat right now, and I've
- 36:30Speaker 1: just gotten into a good you know, and each have
- 36:34Speaker 1: eased in to a good workout routine where I'm starting
- 36:38Speaker 1: to build a strength up in my legs again because
- 36:40Speaker 1: as of right now, I am going to be going
- 36:44Speaker 1: to Colorado for an elk hunt and yeah, and it's
- 36:49Speaker 1: in some really steep ship, so um, you know, I
- 36:53Speaker 1: can't I'm not going to be able to just walk
- 36:56Speaker 1: up in there and say, you know, similar to what
- 36:58Speaker 1: similar to what? Uh? You know? Our Idaho trip. How
- 37:03Speaker 1: you know that elevation hits you if you're not used
- 37:05Speaker 1: to it, and mentally it's almost like you've been defeated.
- 37:09Speaker 1: And I worked my ass off as far as my
- 37:11Speaker 1: legs were concerned getting ready for that trip. But that elevation, right,
- 37:16Speaker 1: you can't you can't prepare for that. So I'm just
- 37:19Speaker 1: again gonna try to get into the best shape of
- 37:21Speaker 1: my life, try to lose some weight, and uh, you know,
- 37:24Speaker 1: I'm gonna try to do it all without taking any
- 37:27Speaker 1: gym selfies. Yeah, that's the challenge, right man. I'm just
- 37:34Speaker 1: we're just not that typed in. I mean, I just
- 37:38Speaker 1: don't think either one of us would look very good
- 37:40Speaker 1: in them either. I mean I can, and maybe I
- 37:43Speaker 1: should just do it anyway and see what happens. Just
- 37:46Speaker 1: start taking a ship ton of jim selfies. I am
- 37:50Speaker 1: such a weirdough that my jim selfies like Okay. So
- 37:54Speaker 1: so my workout is every morning, I get up and
- 37:58Speaker 1: even I'm even trying to do this, even with the
- 38:00Speaker 1: kid um. First thing I do is I get up
- 38:02Speaker 1: and I just go to my office and I'm wearing
- 38:04Speaker 1: my pajama pants and a T shirt and and sometimes
- 38:08Speaker 1: I put on like some running shoes and then I
- 38:10Speaker 1: take like twenty thirty minutes and I just throw a
- 38:12Speaker 1: timer on and I just do a bunch of different
- 38:14Speaker 1: body weight stuff, just like jogging in place, jumping, Jack's
- 38:18Speaker 1: set ups, push ups, a whole bunch of different things
- 38:20Speaker 1: like that. Um, that is my workout. So if I
- 38:24Speaker 1: was taking jim selfies, it would be me in my
- 38:27Speaker 1: office wearing pajamas with like a twenty pound weight. Like
- 38:31Speaker 1: I'm a big tough guy. So that's just not gonna
- 38:34Speaker 1: play real well on Instagram. I don't think. No, that
- 38:38Speaker 1: might that might even get like the state involved, right
- 38:41Speaker 1: or Instagram pretty much says Okay, dude, enough with this
- 38:46Speaker 1: uh profanity. What you talked about our Idaho trip and
- 38:51Speaker 1: you talked about how that was challenging for you. So
- 38:54Speaker 1: now that you worked your tail off before that trip,
- 38:57Speaker 1: but still I think that you know, like you just said,
- 38:59Speaker 1: it was you even like the first day or two
- 39:02Speaker 1: you're like, whoa, you were a little bit mentally defeated.
- 39:04Speaker 1: Um So, knowing what you know now now that you've
- 39:06Speaker 1: done it once, how are you changing how you prepare?
- 39:09Speaker 1: What are you doing differently? Well? You just you you
- 39:13Speaker 1: can you can prepare all you want, right, But if
- 39:16Speaker 1: you live in three hundred foot elevation, like I think
- 39:20Speaker 1: where I'm at is maybe I don't even know, like
- 39:23Speaker 1: seven feet above sea level, that's what where I'm at.
- 39:27Speaker 1: And then you're trying to go up to ten thousand feet.
- 39:30Speaker 1: I mean, unless I have some kind of oxygen deprivation chamber,
- 39:34Speaker 1: I'm I can't really prepare for that part of it, right.
- 39:38Speaker 1: So I mean last time, I, you know, I had
- 39:41Speaker 1: a ship ton of weight in packs and I would
- 39:43Speaker 1: go on like four mile hikes. I do that a
- 39:45Speaker 1: couple of times a week, just to get the legs
- 39:47Speaker 1: used to you know, get them worn out, try to
- 39:50Speaker 1: get them tired. I did, uh, you know, I lifted weights,
- 39:55Speaker 1: I did some cardio that kind of stuff. And it's
- 39:57Speaker 1: just continuing to do that same thing. And and then
- 40:01Speaker 1: I guess prepare mentally. So the last time when I
- 40:07Speaker 1: when I went to Idaho, the time before that that
- 40:11Speaker 1: I was there was like seven or ten years ago,
- 40:15Speaker 1: so I completely forgot what elevation it was like, you
- 40:21Speaker 1: know that the elevation change was like I completely so
- 40:24Speaker 1: it shocked me again. Now I know what it's like,
- 40:27Speaker 1: and I think I can you know, better prepare for
- 40:29Speaker 1: it since the increment in you know, the time increment
- 40:32Speaker 1: in between those trips it was shorter. We've we've touched
- 40:37Speaker 1: on it a little bit over the years, But how
- 40:40Speaker 1: much do you think physical fitness impacts your deer hunting?
- 40:45Speaker 1: Like my dear hunting in Iowa, you know, right right?
- 40:51Speaker 1: I think physical fitness is it makes everything easier. Is
- 40:55Speaker 1: it necessary? No? I mean I if I know that
- 41:00Speaker 1: when I'm in better shape and eating healthy throughout a
- 41:03Speaker 1: hunting season, I'm more alert in the stand. It's easier
- 41:06Speaker 1: to do my running gun setups. Now, I've also had
- 41:09Speaker 1: seasons where going into the season I was fat as
- 41:14Speaker 1: ship and out of shape and eating poorly, and it
- 41:18Speaker 1: was almost like I had to force my body to
- 41:22Speaker 1: get back into the swing of things. You know, you're
- 41:26Speaker 1: just sweating setting up your tree stands, and you're tired
- 41:29Speaker 1: in the stand and you're falling asleep and stuff like that.
- 41:32Speaker 1: So what I will say, as far as you know,
- 41:34Speaker 1: and I can speak on the tree stand style of hunting,
- 41:37Speaker 1: that I do the running gun tree stand style. It's
- 41:40Speaker 1: easier if you're in better shape, but it's not necessary
- 41:45Speaker 1: because I think it was in two thousand and twelve
- 41:49Speaker 1: when I ended up killing uh one of my bucks
- 41:54Speaker 1: that's sitting here on the wall. I was really out
- 41:57Speaker 1: of shape, and I I don't know, like I just
- 42:03Speaker 1: remember struggling, not necessarily struggling, but the hikes in and
- 42:08Speaker 1: the hikes out were more of a challenge as opposed
- 42:11Speaker 1: to other years when I was in really good shape,
- 42:13Speaker 1: like two thousand thirteen or two thousand and fourteen, when
- 42:16Speaker 1: I was actually in some of the best shape of
- 42:17Speaker 1: my life. Because I was taking these these workout classes
- 42:21Speaker 1: that you're going to say these steroids, I thought you're
- 42:25Speaker 1: just gonna come right out and say it. Yeah, dude,
- 42:27Speaker 1: I was juice and real heavy, and everything was easy
- 42:30Speaker 1: for me. That's the secret, that's the that's right. But yeah, dude,
- 42:35Speaker 1: I think I think physical fitness is good for everything.
- 42:40Speaker 1: Right if your if your body is strong and prepared prepared,
- 42:44Speaker 1: then your mind is also prepared in a way. But
- 42:49Speaker 1: I don't don't but I don't think it's necessary and
- 42:51Speaker 1: certain you know, I agree. I think that I think
- 42:55Speaker 1: it makes everything easier. And if that's like one less
- 42:58Speaker 1: thing you need to worry about, it's a good thing.
- 43:01Speaker 1: You know. They're they're so there's so many variables outside
- 43:04Speaker 1: of our control when it comes to deer hunting, especially
- 43:07Speaker 1: these mature bucks, that if your physical fitness is one
- 43:10Speaker 1: thing you don't need to worry about, if you don't
- 43:12Speaker 1: need to worry about kind of make it up this hill,
- 43:14Speaker 1: or can I hike in with my tree stand on
- 43:16Speaker 1: my back all the way to that tough to reach area,
- 43:19Speaker 1: if those things are yeah, absolutely, no questions like that's
- 43:22Speaker 1: that's a good thing. I'd rather be in that situation
- 43:24Speaker 1: than than struggling to do the things I know I
- 43:27Speaker 1: should be doing. So at the same time, I don't
- 43:29Speaker 1: think you need to be Cameron Hayes. Nothing not nothing
- 43:32Speaker 1: against you know, taking it very seriously. Good for you
- 43:34Speaker 1: if you want to do that, but it's not absolutely
- 43:36Speaker 1: necessary to take at that level either. I want to
- 43:39Speaker 1: ask you a question. We've never really discussed this. And
- 43:42Speaker 1: when me and you went out to Idaho, you had
- 43:46Speaker 1: already been out west that entire summer fishing and hiking,
- 43:51Speaker 1: and you've been you were somewhat acclimated to the elevation,
- 43:54Speaker 1: and your legs are strong because you were up in
- 43:57Speaker 1: the mountains doing a lot of hiking and backpacking, and
- 44:00Speaker 1: then here I come and I know you were waiting
- 44:07Speaker 1: for me, right, I was, No, honestly I was. We
- 44:12Speaker 1: were not the same. Not only are you taller than
- 44:15Speaker 1: me and you cover more ground per stride, but I
- 44:19Speaker 1: you know, I was gassed within the first mile of
- 44:22Speaker 1: that hike into camp, and you you know, you were
- 44:26Speaker 1: having to wait for me a lot, and you were
- 44:28Speaker 1: having to wait for me during the hunts as well.
- 44:30Speaker 1: What was what was going through your head on that trip? Well,
- 44:36Speaker 1: I think the only thing it was just like there's
- 44:39Speaker 1: a little bit of like, uh, like Dan's gonna struggle,
- 44:42Speaker 1: and that is just to do a hunt like that.
- 44:45Speaker 1: It's really hard to pull off a hunt like that
- 44:47Speaker 1: if you're struggling, because you know, there's so many just
- 44:50Speaker 1: like we talked about the deer on an elk hunt,
- 44:52Speaker 1: there's so many things stacked against you already. Um, if
- 44:55Speaker 1: just getting around is a challenge, then you're gonna you're
- 44:58Speaker 1: gonna struggle even more so. I between that, um and
- 45:02Speaker 1: you did fine. Like I think what was good is
- 45:04Speaker 1: that like the first day or two you struggle especially.
- 45:08Speaker 1: I remember that first day, Um, like we set up
- 45:11Speaker 1: camp and then we went out for like a scouting hike.
- 45:13Speaker 1: Do you remember that we set up camp and then
- 45:15Speaker 1: we went went off and did some glassing and then
- 45:18Speaker 1: hiking back after yeah, and then hiking back after dark.
- 45:21Speaker 1: I think I remember you stopping often and just being like,
- 45:25Speaker 1: you can't believe this. I don't know if I can
- 45:26Speaker 1: do this, And I was like, oh, man, um, but
- 45:30Speaker 1: like two days into it, after our after the after
- 45:33Speaker 1: the tent tobaccle, and after having to go back to
- 45:35Speaker 1: town and buy a new tent and dealing with the
- 45:38Speaker 1: rain and everything. What didn't press me though, is that
- 45:41Speaker 1: you just you kept slogging through it like it was
- 45:43Speaker 1: a it was a challenge for you, but you kept
- 45:45Speaker 1: you kept grinding, um, and you didn't give up. Like
- 45:49Speaker 1: there never was a time. I don't think I ever
- 45:51Speaker 1: can recall you once saying I can't do it or
- 45:53Speaker 1: I don't want to do this anymore. Um, you kept going.
- 45:56Speaker 1: So that was that was definitely admirable, and that the
- 46:00Speaker 1: it was a tough hunt in general, because the elk
- 46:02Speaker 1: just weren't low Low They're the one the few elk.
- 46:05Speaker 1: We did fine. We're way far off a high and
- 46:07Speaker 1: so we had we had our challenges ahead of us.
- 46:10Speaker 1: But um, but you you kept going, man. So I
- 46:15Speaker 1: was proud of you for that. I I talked to
- 46:19Speaker 1: myself when I get frustrated, like and I noticed that that,
- 46:24Speaker 1: you know, when I especially when my when my tent
- 46:29Speaker 1: exploded pretty much and all that water was coming in
- 46:32Speaker 1: and we had to come off the mountain. I was
- 46:35Speaker 1: mentally almost defeated at that point, like how am I
- 46:38Speaker 1: going to make it through the next four days? Soaking wet?
- 46:43Speaker 1: And you know, now I gotta go. You know, we're
- 46:47Speaker 1: off the mountain, going into uh Jackson to get a
- 46:51Speaker 1: tent that I paid seven hundred dollars. Yeah, you got
- 46:58Speaker 1: fleeced on that one, but oh man, oh I needed it.
- 47:01Speaker 1: And uh so so anyway, you know, it's just boom
- 47:06Speaker 1: like I got shipped on right away. And so like
- 47:09Speaker 1: for me, I don't like to fail. So I had
- 47:14Speaker 1: my my inner voice talking ship to me, basically calling
- 47:19Speaker 1: myself a pussy the entire time. I'm like, pussy, don't
- 47:23Speaker 1: you quit. You're just a huge you know, you're a
- 47:25Speaker 1: woos You're don't quit. You want to quit, don't you?
- 47:28Speaker 1: And I was just like, mentally, that's what I was
- 47:30Speaker 1: saying to myself, you know, like you can't quit, your pussy.
- 47:33Speaker 1: You know, you just keep going, don't quit, don't quit.
- 47:36Speaker 1: And I was even talking out loud at some points
- 47:38Speaker 1: doing that, and I think that's what kept me motivated.
- 47:42Speaker 1: And and man, it worked because you kept going and
- 47:44Speaker 1: I we kept it. Wasn't like at any point we
- 47:47Speaker 1: said all right, well this is tough, we're just gonna
- 47:49Speaker 1: stay here. It was we still kept chasing him. I
- 47:52Speaker 1: remember that one day it was still raining and I
- 47:56Speaker 1: was like, all right, we need to go up this ridge.
- 47:57Speaker 1: And we kept going up, up, up, up up that
- 47:59Speaker 1: one ridge. I called it Stinkridge. I don't remember if
- 48:01Speaker 1: you remember that, but um, we finally saw a couple
- 48:05Speaker 1: of bulls across on the opposite ridge, so across the valley,
- 48:09Speaker 1: and I was like, all right, we're gonna go after him.
- 48:12Speaker 1: So we went diving down into that steep ravine where
- 48:14Speaker 1: they saw those moose, and then cranking all the way
- 48:17Speaker 1: up the other side. Yeah, and it was wet and
- 48:20Speaker 1: we were slipping and falling and it was and that
- 48:23Speaker 1: was a tough little get up and you kept at
- 48:26Speaker 1: it so that that picture that that's selfie that we
- 48:31Speaker 1: took at the top of that when after we dropped down,
- 48:34Speaker 1: after we went all the way back up and then
- 48:37Speaker 1: we got to that clearing and we made that decision,
- 48:40Speaker 1: well we can keep we can just keep going up,
- 48:42Speaker 1: or let's just go you know where we go back
- 48:45Speaker 1: and regroup for the next time where I will I
- 48:49Speaker 1: haven't framed it yet, but that is something that I
- 48:52Speaker 1: will always remember and form my entire life. Is how
- 48:57Speaker 1: physically demanding that that. I don't know if it was.
- 49:01Speaker 1: I think it was a morning hunt because we were,
- 49:04Speaker 1: you know, and getting to the top of that and
- 49:07Speaker 1: you could just see it in her face. Is that
- 49:09Speaker 1: we were just worn out. And but I tell you
- 49:13Speaker 1: what it was. It was fun. Though it's definitely type
- 49:16Speaker 1: too fun looking back on, it's a lot more fun
- 49:18Speaker 1: than in the moment sometimes. But yeah, man, that was.
- 49:22Speaker 1: It was cool seeing those moose and it's uh god,
- 49:26Speaker 1: if I remember that was the rain just would not stop.
- 49:29Speaker 1: We kept hoping that we could get a break from it.
- 49:32Speaker 1: You were wearing a black trash bag, literally wearing a
- 49:37Speaker 1: trash bag, So yeah, the deck stacked against you. But hey,
- 49:41Speaker 1: I'll tell you what if that's and I know it
- 49:43Speaker 1: can get worse than that, but if you know, it
- 49:47Speaker 1: kind of evens out from here. My next hunt even
- 49:51Speaker 1: if it's half as bad as that, it's still gonna
- 49:54Speaker 1: seem pretty damn cool, you know, yeah, yeah, for sure. Alright,
- 49:59Speaker 1: let's is here for our final break of the day
- 50:03Speaker 1: forward from our partners at White Tailed Properties and Spencer
- 50:07Speaker 1: new Hearth will take it from here this week. With
- 50:10Speaker 1: White Tail Properties, we are joined by Justin Mason, a
- 50:13Speaker 1: land specialist out of Illinois, and Justine is going to
- 50:16Speaker 1: be telling us about what are some often overlooked things
- 50:19Speaker 1: that buyers forget to communicate with their agents. You know,
- 50:22Speaker 1: I think oftentimes buyers overlooked the fact that they're already
- 50:27Speaker 1: working with me as an agent. So if they're browsing
- 50:31Speaker 1: online and they see a property that they like, they
- 50:35Speaker 1: may just kind of impulse and call that other agent,
- 50:38Speaker 1: and then they forget to mention that they're working with
- 50:41Speaker 1: me as their agents. So they ask all these questions
- 50:44Speaker 1: and then call me back and and tell me the news.
- 50:47Speaker 1: And I said, well, did you first tell them that
- 50:48Speaker 1: you're working with me? Um, just so that you don't
- 50:51Speaker 1: step on the other agents toe. So that's probably the
- 50:54Speaker 1: most common overlooked thing that buyers, you know, forget to
- 50:57Speaker 1: tell me as their agent. If you'd like to learn
- 51:00Speaker 1: more and to see the properties that Justin currently has
- 51:03Speaker 1: listed for sale, visit white Tail properties dot com. Backslash
- 51:07Speaker 1: Mason that's m a s O. N Ah, So you're
- 51:12Speaker 1: gonna do a Colorado Elk count I I'm leaning towards
- 51:17Speaker 1: trying to pull in an Elk cut maybe in early
- 51:20Speaker 1: September with I still want to do my Western white
- 51:23Speaker 1: tail trip this year. I don't have details figured out
- 51:25Speaker 1: yet quite but I might try to do a double
- 51:28Speaker 1: Montana trip Montana Whitetail and Montana Elk again. Um So
- 51:34Speaker 1: we'll see on that. But well, well there's a whole
- 51:41Speaker 1: there's a whole bunch of things I've been like just
- 51:43Speaker 1: sitting like dreaming about. Like I'm at that stage of
- 51:44Speaker 1: my year where I'm just dreaming about all the different
- 51:46Speaker 1: things i want to try to do this yere, you know. Um,
- 51:49Speaker 1: so I've got this year. I should draw an Iowa
- 51:52Speaker 1: tag if I want it, but I'm considering not. I
- 51:55Speaker 1: don't know. Part of me is like, yes, I definitely
- 51:57Speaker 1: gotta go to Io because a bunch of my buddies
- 51:58Speaker 1: are gonna draw this year, and you know, our friends
- 52:01Speaker 1: down there, it's fun to get to hunt near them. Um.
- 52:05Speaker 1: But I also have got all these other ideas. So
- 52:07Speaker 1: here's an interesting trip idea, okay that I'm gonna do,
- 52:12Speaker 1: excuse me, And we're gonna have a podcast actually about
- 52:15Speaker 1: this very soon. Um if if it should be next
- 52:20Speaker 1: week's episode, we're gonna have a whole podcast about this.
- 52:22Speaker 1: So I won't talk too much about it because we're
- 52:24Speaker 1: gonna talk a whole bunch about next week. UM. But
- 52:28Speaker 1: take this idea, and Dan, let me know what you
- 52:29Speaker 1: think about this. Me and my buddy Andy are going
- 52:32Speaker 1: to go to northern Minnesota to the Boundary Waters Canoe
- 52:37Speaker 1: Area wilderness and we're gonna do a canoe in back
- 52:41Speaker 1: country whitetail hunt. So get all your gear in a canoe,
- 52:46Speaker 1: canoe up through lakes and portage across from lake to
- 52:50Speaker 1: lake to lake, and go up a river and back
- 52:52Speaker 1: back back back into this massive wilderness area, UM where
- 52:56Speaker 1: there's no motorized vehicles allowed, nothing like that. UM into
- 53:00Speaker 1: big woods northern Minnesota wilderness where there's moose and wolves
- 53:04Speaker 1: and some big bodied old white tails if you can
- 53:07Speaker 1: find them and live out there for a week. UM.
- 53:11Speaker 1: I'm pretty pumped about that. And that's that's what I think.
- 53:13Speaker 1: I'm gonna do this time this year in October. Um,
- 53:16Speaker 1: we're gonna try to pull off that hunt. And um,
- 53:20Speaker 1: I've gotten more and more excited about trying to like
- 53:23Speaker 1: do some like unique white tail things. So do like
- 53:26Speaker 1: kind of adventure white tail hunts. So so this is
- 53:29Speaker 1: like my canoe and white tail hunt. UM I want
- 53:32Speaker 1: to do. I want to go into the big woods
- 53:34Speaker 1: of like Maine or something and do one of these
- 53:36Speaker 1: tracking hunts where you track a buck through big public
- 53:39Speaker 1: land stuff. Um. I want to do a backpacking mountain
- 53:44Speaker 1: white tail hunt someday. I don't think do it this year,
- 53:46Speaker 1: but it'd be awesome to go to like northern Idaho
- 53:49Speaker 1: or one of these areas we can find big white
- 53:52Speaker 1: tails and like cutovers at like eight thousand feet or
- 53:55Speaker 1: something up in these mountains and backpack up in there
- 53:58Speaker 1: like you're doing an elk hunt, but chase white tails. Um,
- 54:01Speaker 1: that's something I want to do. I want to do.
- 54:04Speaker 1: Um more planes white tail hunting. I love the Great Plains,
- 54:09Speaker 1: so I want to do. I think when I think
- 54:11Speaker 1: where I'm gonna white tail hunt this year might be
- 54:12Speaker 1: more of like planes, bad lands breaks type area white
- 54:17Speaker 1: tail hunt. Um. So I don't know I've just been
- 54:21Speaker 1: brainstorming all these different ways of like doing a really
- 54:24Speaker 1: cool white tail hunt. But it's like very different than
- 54:26Speaker 1: the usual thing I do here close to home. So
- 54:28Speaker 1: that's kind of where my head has been at recently. Like,
- 54:30Speaker 1: you know what else, I want to do a Coustier hunt,
- 54:33Speaker 1: which is, um, you know, basically like a desert It's
- 54:35Speaker 1: a desert white tail. It's a small desert white tail
- 54:37Speaker 1: down in like Arizona or New Mexico. So I'm wondering
- 54:41Speaker 1: about how I might be able to pull that off
- 54:43Speaker 1: next January. Um. So, my my brains, my wheels, and
- 54:47Speaker 1: my brain are turning a lot. But the one that
- 54:49Speaker 1: I'm for sure doing is going to be this boundary
- 54:52Speaker 1: waters trip. That sounds pretty sweet, doesn't it. Oh? Yeah, absolutely.
- 54:56Speaker 1: I just want to like I love up to the
- 54:59Speaker 1: stage now or okay here, like here are things that
- 55:03Speaker 1: I want to accomplish one this year. You know, I
- 55:08Speaker 1: talk a lot about you know, age structure. Right, we
- 55:11Speaker 1: want to try to kill a mature deer, or you know,
- 55:14Speaker 1: we want to kill an old deer or the right dear.
- 55:17Speaker 1: You know, I think I'm gonna just stop thinking about
- 55:21Speaker 1: it in depth, and I'm just gonna shoot a deer
- 55:25Speaker 1: that makes me go like whoa, you know what I mean. Like,
- 55:29Speaker 1: I'm not I'm not gonna put any real goal out there.
- 55:35Speaker 1: I'm just going to be if that makes sense, and
- 55:38Speaker 1: I'm just gonna if I see a deer that I
- 55:40Speaker 1: want to shoot right then and there. Yeah, I'm gonna
- 55:43Speaker 1: have a maybe a hit list put together before and
- 55:46Speaker 1: if that deer comes by, But if another deer comes
- 55:48Speaker 1: by and I get excited and I'm happy about it
- 55:52Speaker 1: and I'm gonna shoot it, I'm gonna shoot it. You know,
- 55:55Speaker 1: it's funny you mentioned that because, oh gosh, don't know,
- 56:00Speaker 1: this would have been like eight years ago or something.
- 56:02Speaker 1: The first time I ever saw you was on a
- 56:05Speaker 1: hunting DVD and you were you had just shot a
- 56:09Speaker 1: big I think it was like a two by four
- 56:10Speaker 1: buck or something like that, if I remember right, And
- 56:13Speaker 1: you shot that deer and you turned to the camera
- 56:16Speaker 1: and you said that buck made me go, oh, so
- 56:20Speaker 1: I shot it, and that like I got such a
- 56:22Speaker 1: kick out of that, and like your motion and just
- 56:24Speaker 1: that like authenticity in that moment was like I like
- 56:28Speaker 1: that guy. And many years later, here we are and
- 56:32Speaker 1: you're and you've come you've you've been on some interesting
- 56:35Speaker 1: kind of journey since that point, and now you're thinking
- 56:37Speaker 1: about going back to that point. Um, that's interesting to me,
- 56:41Speaker 1: you know. Yeah, you know, I think a lot of
- 56:43Speaker 1: it's gonna play role like I'm not gonna shoot a
- 56:47Speaker 1: two year old or a three year old, you know
- 56:49Speaker 1: what I mean. I'm just gonna shoot what I want
- 56:53Speaker 1: to shoot. Do you want to Are you open to
- 56:55Speaker 1: talking about what happened this year in generalities a little
- 56:59Speaker 1: bit with the person who had some criticism for you?
- 57:01Speaker 1: Is that something we can talk about or no? I mean, yeah,
- 57:04Speaker 1: we can talk about it. I'm not gonna name the names,
- 57:08Speaker 1: but I can we'll talk about it. I'm I'm game
- 57:11Speaker 1: for that. So let me, let me, let me I'll
- 57:15Speaker 1: put the very very vague thing out there and you
- 57:17Speaker 1: can feel free to say whatever more you want. But
- 57:19Speaker 1: someone that hunts near where you hunt saw the buck
- 57:24Speaker 1: that you shot this past year and offered some comments
- 57:29Speaker 1: or criticisms about the age of that, dear and express
- 57:34Speaker 1: some thoughts about maybe it might be good for you
- 57:37Speaker 1: to hold out for older dear. Is that a fair
- 57:40Speaker 1: explanation of the situation and then or how would you
- 57:43Speaker 1: explain the situation and then how what were your thoughts
- 57:46Speaker 1: on how it was put to you? What was your
- 57:48Speaker 1: um how did you take it? What do you think
- 57:51Speaker 1: going forward? Mm hmm. Man, it's a tough one, right
- 58:00Speaker 1: because I kind of get where this person is coming from.
- 58:03Speaker 1: All right, So I hunt in an area where there
- 58:07Speaker 1: is management, really really good management in different parts like
- 58:14Speaker 1: to the west of my farm or too. Yeah, to
- 58:19Speaker 1: to the south, to the west, to the north are
- 58:23Speaker 1: a little ways. Is all really good management. So I
- 58:27Speaker 1: hunt in a decent neighborhood. Now you can't say decent, Well,
- 58:32Speaker 1: you're hunting one of the greatest neighborhoods in the country. Well,
- 58:35Speaker 1: I wouldn't say that, but dude, only because some like
- 58:40Speaker 1: there are properties in between these these really big manage.
- 58:45Speaker 1: But yes, I do get good residual off of what
- 58:48Speaker 1: comes through, right, I'll say that. Now I got access
- 58:52Speaker 1: to a new farm and I didn't have I didn't
- 58:55Speaker 1: put trail cameras on it. I only hunted it one
- 58:57Speaker 1: time before, and uh in a completely different area. So
- 59:01Speaker 1: I did a run gun in there, you know, and
- 59:03Speaker 1: you guys know the story. I shot a buck that
- 59:06Speaker 1: was really small. I'm thinking it could have been a
- 59:09Speaker 1: two year old. You know, it was definitely a three
- 59:11Speaker 1: year old, could have even been a two year old,
- 59:13Speaker 1: but it had superior genetics. I mean it was a
- 59:15Speaker 1: it might be like on two year old, right, maybe
- 59:21Speaker 1: I don't know, so, yeah, so it's a stud posted
- 59:26Speaker 1: on Instagram, right, that's what everybody does. I get an
- 59:30Speaker 1: email or not an email, but a text message from
- 59:33Speaker 1: uh someone in the neighborhoods basically saying, hey, I just
- 59:37Speaker 1: want to let you know that you shot a very
- 59:40Speaker 1: young deer and it was it had great potential. Now
- 59:46Speaker 1: we'll never basically now we'll never get to see what
- 59:49Speaker 1: that um you know what that deer turns into. Um,
- 59:56Speaker 1: you know, I'm into shooting big mature bucks. And then
- 1:00:01Speaker 1: he gets into like the score right, and he's like, Okay,
- 1:00:04Speaker 1: here's a here's a four year old that I passed,
- 1:00:08Speaker 1: right and it was one of the biggest year I've
- 1:00:11Speaker 1: ever seen in my life on trail camera. Yeah, I'm
- 1:00:15Speaker 1: I'm I'm looking at this picture that he sends me,
- 1:00:18Speaker 1: you know, and he's like, hey, if you ever need
- 1:00:20Speaker 1: to know what's in your you know, what's in the area,
- 1:00:23Speaker 1: let me know that way you have a better idea
- 1:00:25Speaker 1: of what to shoot right, And so then there's some
- 1:00:30Speaker 1: images that start coming to my phone of these giants
- 1:00:34Speaker 1: that not one person in their right mind would ever pass, right,
- 1:00:43Speaker 1: would ever pass and saying, you know this buck went
- 1:00:48Speaker 1: from And so what comes to my mind is, uh, dude,
- 1:00:57Speaker 1: are you asking me to pass a hundred and nine
- 1:01:00Speaker 1: the inch four year old because that will never happen, right,
- 1:01:05Speaker 1: this person, you know, the some of the ground around
- 1:01:09Speaker 1: me and their their landowners are on a different level.
- 1:01:13Speaker 1: They're on a level that is one percent. Right. When
- 1:01:19Speaker 1: you have thousands of acres to manage and you have
- 1:01:24Speaker 1: you can do whatever you want if you want to
- 1:01:26Speaker 1: pass a five or six year old deer and see
- 1:01:28Speaker 1: what they turn into, just to see what they turn into.
- 1:01:31Speaker 1: These people aren't hunting for one seventies anymore. They're hunting
- 1:01:35Speaker 1: for two d Yeah, I mean, you're in a it's
- 1:01:38Speaker 1: a totally different world, totally different world. It's totally not word.
- 1:01:41Speaker 1: It's a totally different world than even most places in Iowa,
- 1:01:44Speaker 1: let alone the rest of the country. Um So, I
- 1:01:49Speaker 1: know I want to be to be fair to this
- 1:01:51Speaker 1: person who texted you, h And it depends on how
- 1:01:55Speaker 1: you take it. But I mean he did say I
- 1:01:57Speaker 1: probably if I remember, because I read the text he
- 1:01:59Speaker 1: did saying, I apologize if this comes off as may
- 1:02:01Speaker 1: be a jerk, I don't mean I don't mean it
- 1:02:03Speaker 1: to be that way. He said some stuff like that,
- 1:02:05Speaker 1: so I think he I think this person in fact, okay, yeah,
- 1:02:09Speaker 1: like after I replied back, like, I replied back, got it,
- 1:02:15Speaker 1: That's all I read back after like the huge emails, right,
- 1:02:19Speaker 1: And yes, they managed to a new level, and they
- 1:02:23Speaker 1: want to be with the neighbors, you know, they want
- 1:02:27Speaker 1: to you know. And I would do the same thing,
- 1:02:29Speaker 1: not to that extreme, but I would be like, hey,
- 1:02:32Speaker 1: you know, I'm managing for a certain dear over here.
- 1:02:35Speaker 1: You can do whatever you want to do because these
- 1:02:37Speaker 1: are not my dear. You know. That was mentioned after
- 1:02:41Speaker 1: the fact, you know. And I did get an apology
- 1:02:43Speaker 1: from from that person, basically saying, you know, hey, I
- 1:02:48Speaker 1: apologize in a text, I apologize for those you know,
- 1:02:54Speaker 1: for that comment. You know, I should have congratulated you instead.
- 1:02:58Speaker 1: I you know, I started talking about management because it
- 1:03:02Speaker 1: is so hard and whatever. You know, I'm not on that.
- 1:03:07Speaker 1: I'm not on that level. I doubt I'll ever be
- 1:03:09Speaker 1: on that level, but it it made me upset because
- 1:03:16Speaker 1: how is the average guy. I'm putting myself in the
- 1:03:19Speaker 1: average Joe category. Yes, I get to like, you take
- 1:03:24Speaker 1: the state out of it, right, and you have large
- 1:03:27Speaker 1: pieces of public ground or excuse me, of highly managed
- 1:03:31Speaker 1: ground in any state, you're going going to be getting
- 1:03:34Speaker 1: Look even in your neighborhood. Mark, if you had your
- 1:03:37Speaker 1: neighbor in one direction had a thousand acres of man
- 1:03:40Speaker 1: highly managed property, the caliber of deer on that property
- 1:03:45Speaker 1: are going to be higher than what you're used to.
- 1:03:50Speaker 1: So if that person said to you, well, hey, you
- 1:03:53Speaker 1: shouldn't you probably shouldn't you know, shoot that that deer?
- 1:03:58Speaker 1: You shouldn't have shot that deer? I mean, who gives you?
- 1:04:04Speaker 1: What gives you the right to say that to me?
- 1:04:07Speaker 1: You know what I mean? No, I I can understand.
- 1:04:09Speaker 1: I can understand your perspective. Um that that right there
- 1:04:14Speaker 1: is a part of what drives me crazy about the
- 1:04:19Speaker 1: hunting industry. In the hunting community as a whole, we
- 1:04:23Speaker 1: put all this emphasis on antlers because it's going to
- 1:04:27Speaker 1: we feel that you know, if you shot a two deer,
- 1:04:31Speaker 1: it would do big things for wired to hunt, wouldn't it?
- 1:04:34Speaker 1: I mean, can can? Would you? Would you admit that
- 1:04:37Speaker 1: if you shot a two d in deer wired to
- 1:04:39Speaker 1: hunt would get a bump in some way, shape or form.
- 1:04:43Speaker 1: I guess that's fair to say that. Yeah, I mean
- 1:04:45Speaker 1: people have more interest in the deer like that, so
- 1:04:47Speaker 1: probably stuff will get shared, more, more people to talk
- 1:04:50Speaker 1: about it, more people to see the pictures. So yeah, sure, right.
- 1:04:53Speaker 1: So in the past five years, three years whatever, q
- 1:04:57Speaker 1: d m A stats, we've lost three million nurs. So
- 1:05:01Speaker 1: now what we're doing is we're everything is focused on
- 1:05:06Speaker 1: on antler size and it drives me crazy that antler
- 1:05:11Speaker 1: size is a big thing. It's it's a it's almost
- 1:05:16Speaker 1: like it defines somebody. This person is shot, uh, this
- 1:05:21Speaker 1: person is shot fourteen Boone and Crocketts, this person has
- 1:05:25Speaker 1: you know, shot a hundred and thirty poping youngs or whatever.
- 1:05:29Speaker 1: Like at the end of the day, if I am
- 1:05:33Speaker 1: labeled as one of the greatest deer hunters, and that's it, Man,
- 1:05:36Speaker 1: I failed at life because I don't want to. I
- 1:05:39Speaker 1: don't care. I want to be a good husband, I
- 1:05:41Speaker 1: want to be a good father. I want to you know, friend,
- 1:05:44Speaker 1: I was gonna say, I don't think you need to
- 1:05:46Speaker 1: worry about anyone labeling you that way, you know what
- 1:05:53Speaker 1: I mean. But generally speaking, I'm just like I just
- 1:05:56Speaker 1: I get rubbed the wrong way a little bit when
- 1:06:00Speaker 1: and and I come off as a hypocrite because I
- 1:06:04Speaker 1: hunt in the greatest white tail state, in a very
- 1:06:09Speaker 1: good neighborhood, and I have access to great ground, and
- 1:06:13Speaker 1: I you know, I get pictures of giant deer on
- 1:06:15Speaker 1: trail camera every year, And I mean, and and you
- 1:06:18Speaker 1: get excited about really big deer, and you talk about
- 1:06:21Speaker 1: the big deer, and I mean, and so so I
- 1:06:24Speaker 1: agree with you. I have the same concerns, but at
- 1:06:27Speaker 1: the same time, to your point, I also understand why
- 1:06:31Speaker 1: people get excited about that because there's something. Yeah, it's rare,
- 1:06:36Speaker 1: it's special, it's unique, and it's just it is. A
- 1:06:39Speaker 1: deer with a large or unique rack is just a
- 1:06:42Speaker 1: cool thing to see and to learn about and to chase. Um.
- 1:06:47Speaker 1: So so I see things in both angles. And then
- 1:06:50Speaker 1: I also see, like the the management side of things,
- 1:06:53Speaker 1: so not antlers, but age. I see that. But then
- 1:06:57Speaker 1: I also see how do we how do we talk
- 1:07:00Speaker 1: about management in the in the benefits of management um
- 1:07:04Speaker 1: which might lead to bigger, older deer, How do we
- 1:07:07Speaker 1: talk about that in a way that is educational but
- 1:07:11Speaker 1: does not put down or make newer hunters or hunters
- 1:07:16Speaker 1: with different goals feel bad about what they're doing or
- 1:07:18Speaker 1: be discouraged about what they're doing. Um. Because yeah, I
- 1:07:24Speaker 1: think you should hunt for whatever you want to hunt
- 1:07:26Speaker 1: for and have a good time, you know, don't get
- 1:07:29Speaker 1: so obsessed with all this stuff. But at the same time,
- 1:07:31Speaker 1: if you're into trying to find a big old buck,
- 1:07:34Speaker 1: or if you like antlers, I'm not gonna hold that
- 1:07:36Speaker 1: against you either because because I do too, right. Um,
- 1:07:40Speaker 1: but if it if the antlers are a result, if
- 1:07:46Speaker 1: the end result of an antler is belittling or a
- 1:07:51Speaker 1: negative comment or thinking that you're better than somebody else
- 1:07:56Speaker 1: or you know all those there's like all these negative
- 1:07:58Speaker 1: connotations that go with it, then that's not good. Yeah,
- 1:08:03Speaker 1: and I think that's that's the that's the key. I
- 1:08:05Speaker 1: think it's I And who am I to say any this?
- 1:08:09Speaker 1: This is just my personal opinion. But I'm all for
- 1:08:12Speaker 1: having goals and whatever kind of goals. You want to do,
- 1:08:16Speaker 1: what you want, what you want, have your own goals,
- 1:08:19Speaker 1: chase whatever it is you want to chase. Um. I'm
- 1:08:21Speaker 1: also all for, though, like sharing, Hey, here's the benefits
- 1:08:25Speaker 1: to certain management things. Here's the benefits to trying to
- 1:08:28Speaker 1: you know, have a balanced age structure, or this is
- 1:08:31Speaker 1: why it might be a good thing to think about
- 1:08:33Speaker 1: ecologically to try to have older deer, Like there's a
- 1:08:36Speaker 1: lot of health benefits to the deer herd and stuff.
- 1:08:38Speaker 1: So so this is why I'm doing what I'm doing.
- 1:08:40Speaker 1: I'll say, like, Okay, this is what I'm doing. Here's
- 1:08:42Speaker 1: why I'm doing it. Um, you don't need to do
- 1:08:46Speaker 1: any of those things, but hey, for food for thought,
- 1:08:48Speaker 1: here's what's going on. I think if we can start
- 1:08:50Speaker 1: having our conversations more in that kind of way, like
- 1:08:52Speaker 1: this is what I do, this is why I'm into it.
- 1:08:54Speaker 1: Here's some ideas, but not so much of this putting
- 1:08:57Speaker 1: down other people or talking down to other people or that,
- 1:09:00Speaker 1: Like some of those conversations in that text message that
- 1:09:06Speaker 1: came through were the benefit of the person who sent it,
- 1:09:09Speaker 1: were to the benefit of the person who sent it,
- 1:09:12Speaker 1: right I I I shot that on twenty acres the
- 1:09:16Speaker 1: other person had access to, so maybe even more so,
- 1:09:21Speaker 1: you know, the reason that comment was made I feel
- 1:09:25Speaker 1: was it was I dude, I get it. I understand
- 1:09:30Speaker 1: how maturity works. I understand that you should wait and
- 1:09:33Speaker 1: try to shoot a mature dear. I did not shoot
- 1:09:36Speaker 1: the mature deer. I it was an accident. Basically, Uh,
- 1:09:40Speaker 1: it happens to everybody. I'm I don't I'm not going
- 1:09:43Speaker 1: to take that away from the deer. I'm not gonna say, oh,
- 1:09:45Speaker 1: I should have never shot this dear, because that that's
- 1:09:48Speaker 1: very disrespectable, full to the animal. And and you learn
- 1:09:52Speaker 1: from it, right, you just you gotta learn from it.
- 1:09:55Speaker 1: So so how about this then, So let's let's flip
- 1:09:58Speaker 1: the script a little bit and let's put ourselves in
- 1:10:00Speaker 1: that person's shoes, or let's let's let's say that I am.
- 1:10:04Speaker 1: I am a person who owns some land or maybe
- 1:10:06Speaker 1: you just have at leaves or something, and I'm trying
- 1:10:08Speaker 1: to manage deer and I'm trying to manage this area
- 1:10:10Speaker 1: because you know, I understand a lot of the different
- 1:10:13Speaker 1: things about the benefits of quality dear management, and I'd
- 1:10:16Speaker 1: like to see a healthier, more balance herd structure, and
- 1:10:19Speaker 1: and yeah, you know what, I also do like seeing
- 1:10:21Speaker 1: big deer because they are rare, they're unique, they're cool.
- 1:10:24Speaker 1: There's nothing wrong with that. So I like, So let's
- 1:10:26Speaker 1: let's even just say me, I have a nine d
- 1:10:28Speaker 1: acre property that we talked about, a lot where this
- 1:10:31Speaker 1: holy field deer is um and I don't own it.
- 1:10:35Speaker 1: I don't have that kind of control, but I am
- 1:10:36Speaker 1: the only person who can hunt it, and I can
- 1:10:38Speaker 1: plan some food plots, and so I have personally have
- 1:10:41Speaker 1: wanted it would be great if more people around me
- 1:10:44Speaker 1: would have similar management goals as me. So I it
- 1:10:48Speaker 1: would be it would be nice if more people had
- 1:10:50Speaker 1: similar management goals. It would help the deer hunting. So
- 1:10:53Speaker 1: I've always wondered, like, how do you how do you
- 1:10:55Speaker 1: go about doing there? How does someone who owns land
- 1:10:56Speaker 1: who would like to encourage other people around to start having,
- 1:11:00Speaker 1: you know, these types of conversations or to start maybe
- 1:11:02Speaker 1: doing some of the similar things. And I think there's
- 1:11:05Speaker 1: two ways people can go about it. I think there's
- 1:11:07Speaker 1: one way, which is more so what you encountered, where
- 1:11:11Speaker 1: someone sees what you shot and says, oh, well, you're
- 1:11:14Speaker 1: never gonna see big bucks or we're never gonna get
- 1:11:16Speaker 1: big bucks around here if you keep shooting all those bucks.
- 1:11:18Speaker 1: Don't shoot little bucks. You gotta shoot if you want meat,
- 1:11:20Speaker 1: to shoot a dough um. And they like attack you
- 1:11:23Speaker 1: about it. I think that's gonna I think there's this
- 1:11:26Speaker 1: there's a certain group of deer hunters out there who
- 1:11:30Speaker 1: attack um when it comes to this topic of like
- 1:11:33Speaker 1: what you choose to shoot. So people attack people for
- 1:11:36Speaker 1: shooting small bucks, or they attack you if you don't
- 1:11:38Speaker 1: have the same management goals, and that is giving quality
- 1:11:41Speaker 1: deer management in general. It's given that idea a bad name,
- 1:11:45Speaker 1: and it's making things a lot. It's just it's giving
- 1:11:47Speaker 1: hunters a bad name. I think. UM, So, I personally
- 1:11:51Speaker 1: think that going about things in that way is not
- 1:11:53Speaker 1: helping anybody, and it's also not even helping that person
- 1:11:56Speaker 1: achieve the goals they want. So even if if you
- 1:11:59Speaker 1: want to have more people managing in a way that
- 1:12:02Speaker 1: might offer more mature bucks, if that's what you're going for,
- 1:12:07Speaker 1: then I think, my I'm curious about your thoughts on this,
- 1:12:10Speaker 1: dand but my thought has always been to have open
- 1:12:14Speaker 1: conversations with people. So just engage your neighbors. So hey, hey,
- 1:12:17Speaker 1: first off, get to know your neighbors. So I've tried
- 1:12:19Speaker 1: to get to my don't know my neighbors, become friends
- 1:12:21Speaker 1: with them, share trail camera pictures, talk about some of
- 1:12:23Speaker 1: the deer we're seeing, you know, just develop a relationship
- 1:12:26Speaker 1: with their and then naturally it comes up the kinds
- 1:12:29Speaker 1: of things that I'm doing. So, you know, I talk
- 1:12:31Speaker 1: about the facts I've gotten to know some of my neighbors,
- 1:12:33Speaker 1: and there are conversations I said, you know, I'm trying
- 1:12:36Speaker 1: to it would be great to have a more balanced
- 1:12:38Speaker 1: age structure around here. So I've stopped trying to shoot
- 1:12:40Speaker 1: two and three year old bucks and I'm trying to
- 1:12:42Speaker 1: hold out for four year old bucks. Um. And I'm
- 1:12:45Speaker 1: not telling anyone else what to do, but they're starting
- 1:12:48Speaker 1: to understand that that's what Mark's doing. And hey, here's
- 1:12:50Speaker 1: a picture of a couple of bucks that have made
- 1:12:52Speaker 1: it now to that age. Um. And in those kinds
- 1:12:56Speaker 1: of things, and maybe passing along some information or some literature,
- 1:12:59Speaker 1: or giving a membership again or like a gift membership
- 1:13:03Speaker 1: to the Quality Deer Management Association, because you just lots
- 1:13:06Speaker 1: of great educational content. I think those types of things
- 1:13:09Speaker 1: like just great conversation, open conversation, and if they then
- 1:13:13Speaker 1: respond to that with intrigue, maybe they hear you say
- 1:13:17Speaker 1: that you're passing two year old bucks or you're passing
- 1:13:19Speaker 1: three year old bucks, and they might be maybe then
- 1:13:21Speaker 1: they say, well, how do you do that? Yet we
- 1:13:23Speaker 1: never see two year old or three year old bucks.
- 1:13:25Speaker 1: And then there's your opportunity to say, well, I've tried
- 1:13:28Speaker 1: a B and C and that seems to help, or
- 1:13:30Speaker 1: I read this magazine and that seems to help, or
- 1:13:33Speaker 1: whatever might be. Like, then there's this opportunity for a
- 1:13:35Speaker 1: positive flow of information. But if you just get off
- 1:13:39Speaker 1: the gate and attack or criticize someone because of what
- 1:13:41Speaker 1: they're doing right away, you're shutting the gates. They're not
- 1:13:43Speaker 1: going to be open to anything. Um, they're gonna call
- 1:13:46Speaker 1: your prick and you're in and never listen to you again. Yeah.
- 1:13:50Speaker 1: So so that's like how I've always tried to approach
- 1:13:52Speaker 1: these types of things, because you know, sure it would
- 1:13:55Speaker 1: be great if more if selfishly a little bit like
- 1:13:58Speaker 1: it would be selfishly, it would be a positive thing
- 1:14:01Speaker 1: for my own deer hunting if more people manage the
- 1:14:04Speaker 1: same way I would like to manage now. I do
- 1:14:06Speaker 1: think that it would benefit just the overall ecosystem. I
- 1:14:10Speaker 1: think it would be better for the deer herd. I
- 1:14:12Speaker 1: do think that probably for a lot of people, if
- 1:14:15Speaker 1: they started doing some of the things, they probably really
- 1:14:17Speaker 1: enjoy it too, But I'm not gonna make those assumptions,
- 1:14:20Speaker 1: So I'm not going to press anything on anyone else.
- 1:14:23Speaker 1: Um right, that's my own take. What is your perspective
- 1:14:26Speaker 1: if you could have if you flipped the script and
- 1:14:28Speaker 1: you were this, you were the guy who had this
- 1:14:30Speaker 1: great big manage land, how would you approach it now
- 1:14:33Speaker 1: that you've been on the receiving end. Well, the first
- 1:14:36Speaker 1: thing is right it I think a lot of it
- 1:14:40Speaker 1: has to It depends on how many acres you actually have. Right,
- 1:14:43Speaker 1: So if I own fortres and I and the person
- 1:14:49Speaker 1: next to me was shooting you know, smaller box or
- 1:14:51Speaker 1: whatever and and not doing what I would do or
- 1:14:55Speaker 1: not do what I'm doing on my property, I'd probably
- 1:14:57Speaker 1: have a conversation with them that would sound on something like, uh, hey, man,
- 1:15:02Speaker 1: did you you know keep it simple? Right? Hey? Did
- 1:15:05Speaker 1: you happen to see this buck? And be honest with him?
- 1:15:07Speaker 1: Because if you if you start to lie and you know, hey,
- 1:15:12Speaker 1: I didn't see any big bucks this year, well they're
- 1:15:13Speaker 1: gonna call bullshit on you because they're they're out there
- 1:15:16Speaker 1: hunting to so they know what's running around just as
- 1:15:18Speaker 1: much as you do. For the most part, you know,
- 1:15:21Speaker 1: especially if they're running show cameras, so you just be
- 1:15:23Speaker 1: honest with him. Hey, check this out. Here's what I did. Um,
- 1:15:27Speaker 1: you know I found this, shet Antler, I think, what
- 1:15:29Speaker 1: do you think? Do you think this looks like the
- 1:15:31Speaker 1: same buck from the next year? Okay? Cool? You know
- 1:15:34Speaker 1: you have these, you have these honest conversations with people
- 1:15:38Speaker 1: right now. I think the conversation has to be a
- 1:15:41Speaker 1: little bit different if your acreage is like from four
- 1:15:44Speaker 1: to or fifty to about two thousand acres. Because if
- 1:15:48Speaker 1: I go to someone and I have access to two
- 1:15:51Speaker 1: thousand acres, and then I come to a neighbor who
- 1:15:55Speaker 1: only you know, one of my neighbors, who's you know,
- 1:15:59Speaker 1: twenty thirty even a hundred acres, and I say, hey,
- 1:16:02Speaker 1: here's what I'm doing over there, you could easily come
- 1:16:05Speaker 1: off as a prick. And because that person is gonna go, dude,
- 1:16:08Speaker 1: you have why do you care? Would I shoot? You have?
- 1:16:11Speaker 1: Dear that big that don't even leave your property? Right,
- 1:16:15Speaker 1: they never leave your property. They're born on your property,
- 1:16:17Speaker 1: they die on your property. Right. That's that's how much
- 1:16:21Speaker 1: they have access to. Now, I think that the conversation
- 1:16:25Speaker 1: has to be a little bit different. And if if,
- 1:16:28Speaker 1: if the acreage is that much bigger, because you have
- 1:16:32Speaker 1: to come you're coming off as you're now, you're trying
- 1:16:36Speaker 1: to control the rest of the property around around them,
- 1:16:39Speaker 1: and not just that big chunk that that that I own,
- 1:16:42Speaker 1: let's say. And I think it just you have to
- 1:16:44Speaker 1: start off slow. You have to know who you're talking to,
- 1:16:47Speaker 1: and and just be be cool and be honest. Hey,
- 1:16:51Speaker 1: did you see the big boy this year? No? I
- 1:16:53Speaker 1: didn't see the big boy here. Let me show you
- 1:16:54Speaker 1: a picture of him, and be honest, and you show
- 1:16:57Speaker 1: him the picture, and yes, that's on their property. And
- 1:17:00Speaker 1: there's a good chance that they'll never see that, dear
- 1:17:02Speaker 1: or whatever. But if they do, you've just you know,
- 1:17:05Speaker 1: you just become friends with them. Hunt hunting. Hunting is
- 1:17:12Speaker 1: becoming like the secretive, right, It's like, oh man, I
- 1:17:15Speaker 1: gotta be gotta be quiet about my spots. Yes, I
- 1:17:17Speaker 1: get some of that stuff, but it's almost like we're
- 1:17:22Speaker 1: not a community anymore at that point. We're individuals and
- 1:17:25Speaker 1: we need to be a community. Yeah, and any of
- 1:17:28Speaker 1: that makes sense. No, I blacked out it all. It
- 1:17:31Speaker 1: all made sense. And I think you're I think you're right,
- 1:17:34Speaker 1: and I think that not only is that good for
- 1:17:36Speaker 1: the larger hunting community, but I think the long run,
- 1:17:40Speaker 1: it'll also just make it a more enjoyable experience for
- 1:17:43Speaker 1: you personally too, because as soon as you as soon
- 1:17:46Speaker 1: as you shift from an adversarial relationship with your neighbors
- 1:17:49Speaker 1: to a collaborative relationship, it just becomes more fun, you know,
- 1:17:53Speaker 1: because Number one, if you have a positive relationship, the
- 1:17:57Speaker 1: chances of something bad going on like trespassing or or
- 1:18:00Speaker 1: shed poaching or what are poaching? Those things go down
- 1:18:03Speaker 1: Once you have a positive relationship with your neighbors, So
- 1:18:06Speaker 1: that's a good thing. Number Two, you might actually end
- 1:18:09Speaker 1: up making friends or like you said, just Bill, have
- 1:18:12Speaker 1: a fun opportunity to share pictures, to share stories, to
- 1:18:16Speaker 1: do things like that. And then number three and I
- 1:18:18Speaker 1: shot the big one. I shot the big one. Hey,
- 1:18:20Speaker 1: I'll be over to come help you drag him out
- 1:18:21Speaker 1: of the woods. Yeah exactly. I mean think making that
- 1:18:25Speaker 1: a positive versus oh jeez, you know, that's a lot better.
- 1:18:29Speaker 1: And then not to mention it might also if you
- 1:18:32Speaker 1: approach it in in a positive way, it might also
- 1:18:35Speaker 1: result in the management goals that you want to maybe
- 1:18:38Speaker 1: because you do become friends with Joe next door, and
- 1:18:40Speaker 1: because over the course of a year or two he
- 1:18:43Speaker 1: ends up seeing what you're doing and hearing about where
- 1:18:45Speaker 1: you're doing and gets interested and says, hey, how could
- 1:18:47Speaker 1: I do more of this on my spot? Um, And
- 1:18:49Speaker 1: then you get to talk about what you do, and
- 1:18:50Speaker 1: then all of a sudden, Joe next door he starts
- 1:18:53Speaker 1: managing for four year olds too, And then who knows,
- 1:18:56Speaker 1: maybe his neighbor finds out that Joe is doing all
- 1:18:59Speaker 1: this and and hands doing all this, and man, they
- 1:19:01Speaker 1: keep seeing these nice bucks. I've always wanted to maybe
- 1:19:04Speaker 1: see some older deer, and uh, maybe I should try
- 1:19:07Speaker 1: that too, And then all of a sudden the stuff
- 1:19:08Speaker 1: starts to starts to grow and expand. But that never
- 1:19:12Speaker 1: happens if you go into it with an attack mode
- 1:19:15Speaker 1: adversarial type approach, that it's just it's just not gonna work, right.
- 1:19:19Speaker 1: And that's kind of I'll be honest, that's kind of
- 1:19:21Speaker 1: what happened with me. You know, it came off and
- 1:19:24Speaker 1: whether that was his intention or not. Hell, and we
- 1:19:27Speaker 1: all know that emails and text messages, dude, if they're
- 1:19:30Speaker 1: red wrong, and you know what I mean, it's tough
- 1:19:35Speaker 1: interpretation can can vary widely, and that kind of absolutely
- 1:19:38Speaker 1: absolutely so, so I kind of was put off and
- 1:19:44Speaker 1: I just was I kind of shut the door at
- 1:19:46Speaker 1: that point. I'm just like, Okay, well, I guess I
- 1:19:49Speaker 1: don't need to communicate with you anymore. And I don't know,
- 1:19:52Speaker 1: we'll see what happens from there. Yeah, I UM, it's
- 1:19:57Speaker 1: a tricky topic and it's it's something that I think
- 1:19:59Speaker 1: a lot of people experience, um and it's something that
- 1:20:03Speaker 1: I think as land. Going back to what we talked
- 1:20:06Speaker 1: about way at the beginning of the episode, as access
- 1:20:09Speaker 1: to land gets harder and harder and more people start
- 1:20:12Speaker 1: leasing land or start buying lands just so they have
- 1:20:14Speaker 1: a place they can go, that ramps all these things
- 1:20:17Speaker 1: up even more because if you're paying money for a spot,
- 1:20:20Speaker 1: then you might care even more about what's happening on
- 1:20:23Speaker 1: it or around it. And you've got all these people
- 1:20:25Speaker 1: that are really really into deer hunting and have all
- 1:20:27Speaker 1: these really strong goals, and they've invested lots of time
- 1:20:29Speaker 1: and money into it, and they see everything in the
- 1:20:32Speaker 1: media talking about big box, big box, big box. It
- 1:20:35Speaker 1: gets this point where everyone's at this weird boiling point
- 1:20:39Speaker 1: UM that in the end, oftentimes is not fun oftentimes
- 1:20:43Speaker 1: it you know, it makes the guide do things. Yeah,
- 1:20:48Speaker 1: it leads to greed, and it makes people do things
- 1:20:51Speaker 1: that you know they normally want to have done, like
- 1:20:54Speaker 1: maybe hop over that fence a couple of yards, or
- 1:20:58Speaker 1: maybe throw some corn out, or you know, do some
- 1:21:00Speaker 1: things that you know they could potentially prevent them from
- 1:21:05Speaker 1: ever hunting again. Yeah. And I think in a time
- 1:21:07Speaker 1: when we need to be working harder to bring in
- 1:21:10Speaker 1: new hunters and not lose more hunters, and this is
- 1:21:13Speaker 1: something that we just need to be thinking about. Um
- 1:21:17Speaker 1: And if you yeah, yeah, yeah, do you That's something
- 1:21:20Speaker 1: that I learned a lot, even from the two thousand
- 1:21:23Speaker 1: sixteen season. I just the phrase you just gotta hunt
- 1:21:26Speaker 1: your own hunt just keeps coming back to be more
- 1:21:28Speaker 1: and more because I got so much criticism. This is
- 1:21:31Speaker 1: the reverse when I chose to pass holy Field in
- 1:21:34Speaker 1: December of two thousand sixteen, I got so much criticism
- 1:21:36Speaker 1: for that, um that that was just like a great
- 1:21:40Speaker 1: reminder to me of like, you know what you just get.
- 1:21:43Speaker 1: You don't understand where I'm coming from. You don't understand
- 1:21:45Speaker 1: my goals, you don't understand the experience I've had or
- 1:21:47Speaker 1: the experience that I want to have. Just let me
- 1:21:49Speaker 1: hunt my own hunt. You hunt your hunt. I'm not
- 1:21:51Speaker 1: gonna tell you what to do. Let me hunt my hunt,
- 1:21:54Speaker 1: and don't tell me what to do. Um. And I
- 1:21:56Speaker 1: just think that could be applied to the larger deer
- 1:21:59Speaker 1: hunting community some times. UM. And yeah, it's there's a
- 1:22:05Speaker 1: lot of like specific things that concern me a little bit,
- 1:22:08Speaker 1: like when you get into these topics on like a
- 1:22:11Speaker 1: grander scale, like trying to take a management objective and
- 1:22:15Speaker 1: apply it to an entire state, um like Antler point
- 1:22:18Speaker 1: restrictions or something where I understand the underlying benefits to
- 1:22:24Speaker 1: these types of things, I understand the positives that can
- 1:22:26Speaker 1: come from these things, and personally I like these things, UM,
- 1:22:30Speaker 1: but I think sometimes the way that people try to
- 1:22:32Speaker 1: push them ends up really hurting the goal and the
- 1:22:37Speaker 1: hurts the cause in the long run because they take
- 1:22:39Speaker 1: this attack mode. And that's just that's what concerns me
- 1:22:44Speaker 1: sometimes when I see that kind of stuff and things
- 1:22:46Speaker 1: like what you just experienced happen. So I just I
- 1:22:51Speaker 1: want to I want to be clear that, like you know,
- 1:22:56Speaker 1: we we talk a lot about management, and we talk
- 1:22:58Speaker 1: like I I find myself thinking about this a lot
- 1:23:02Speaker 1: where dude, I like big racks, you know, like you said,
- 1:23:05Speaker 1: I would love to shoot a bood and Crockett or
- 1:23:08Speaker 1: a two or whatever. And when a big deer walks
- 1:23:12Speaker 1: through the timber, I get excited. Um, and yes, I
- 1:23:16Speaker 1: want to shoot. Uh, I want to shoot a four
- 1:23:18Speaker 1: year old. I wanna you know, I want to do
- 1:23:21Speaker 1: all these things that I talk about, But at no
- 1:23:24Speaker 1: way ever do I The first thing you should do,
- 1:23:28Speaker 1: I should do. You should do everybody listening should do.
- 1:23:31Speaker 1: If they see someone shoot a deer and that person
- 1:23:33Speaker 1: is happy because they shot it, congratulations, man, that should
- 1:23:38Speaker 1: be the very first thing. Like I, I often come
- 1:23:41Speaker 1: off as a I feel like I come off as
- 1:23:43Speaker 1: a hypocrite at times, because you know, we talk a
- 1:23:47Speaker 1: lot about maturity. We talk a lot about um, you know,
- 1:23:50Speaker 1: big bucks and antlers, and I show these pictures of
- 1:23:53Speaker 1: some of the deer that I have on on my
- 1:23:55Speaker 1: my property. But I just I don't know. It's uh,
- 1:24:00Speaker 1: I don't know. It's like us. It's like it's like surfing,
- 1:24:04Speaker 1: like the movie Point Break with Patrick Swayze and he's
- 1:24:08Speaker 1: just like, dude, it's the journey, right, It's all about
- 1:24:11Speaker 1: the journey. It's not about the wave, It's about the journey.
- 1:24:15Speaker 1: Wise words. Why is the words from point break right there?
- 1:24:20Speaker 1: It's true though, man, And I think everyone's just gotta
- 1:24:23Speaker 1: you know, I'm all about everybody's got to take their
- 1:24:25Speaker 1: own journey. Yeah, take your own journey. I'm and have
- 1:24:27Speaker 1: your own goals. I mean, I am. We've talked all
- 1:24:29Speaker 1: this often. I'm all about goals. I'm very goal oriented,
- 1:24:32Speaker 1: so I like to have my own goals, but I
- 1:24:34Speaker 1: don't want to push those on anybody else. Everyone else.
- 1:24:36Speaker 1: You had to hunt your own hunt, do your own thing,
- 1:24:39Speaker 1: ride your own wave with Patrick Swayzee, whatever you want
- 1:24:42Speaker 1: to do. And you know, and that being said, my
- 1:24:43Speaker 1: goal sometimes changed too. So you know, I've sometimes approach
- 1:24:47Speaker 1: hunting seasons with goals like an age goal in an area. Um.
- 1:24:50Speaker 1: I've sometimes thought of, you know, to some degree, I'd
- 1:24:53Speaker 1: like to challenge myself and would like to kill a
- 1:24:56Speaker 1: quote unquote bigger buck um than I did last time.
- 1:24:59Speaker 1: Sometimes like Okay, in Michigan, I haven't killed anything, you know,
- 1:25:03Speaker 1: over would be awesome to kill papang buck in Michigan
- 1:25:06Speaker 1: finally or whatever it might be. And that's arbitrary, Yes,
- 1:25:09Speaker 1: it doesn't really matter but I like to set goals.
- 1:25:11Speaker 1: There's nothing wrong with it, I don't think. UM. But
- 1:25:14Speaker 1: at the same time, I'm also going the other way
- 1:25:16Speaker 1: sometimes where now I'm looking at and planning certain trips
- 1:25:20Speaker 1: where going into it, I don't care about age or
- 1:25:23Speaker 1: size as much. Like this back this Boundary Waters trip
- 1:25:25Speaker 1: I want to do, I'm already thinking I'm going in
- 1:25:28Speaker 1: that with anything goes type mentality, like I just want
- 1:25:31Speaker 1: to go on that. I want to have that experience.
- 1:25:34Speaker 1: And I'd like to kill any deer deep in the
- 1:25:36Speaker 1: big woods of the Boundary Waters and corner of the
- 1:25:39Speaker 1: Sucker Up and put him in a canoe and canoe
- 1:25:41Speaker 1: out fifteen miles and portage with him on my back.
- 1:25:44Speaker 1: So if a spike buck came through on that kind
- 1:25:46Speaker 1: of trip, that would still be a really awesome hunting
- 1:25:48Speaker 1: experience that I would love to have. UM And I
- 1:25:53Speaker 1: don't think anyone should criticize me for that. UM And
- 1:25:56Speaker 1: And you know, in a public land hunt in Montana
- 1:26:01Speaker 1: where maybe I shot a two or three year old buck,
- 1:26:03Speaker 1: UM like this. I can't remember if we talked about
- 1:26:05Speaker 1: this or not, but when I went to Montana last
- 1:26:08Speaker 1: year on that trip, I can I went into it
- 1:26:10Speaker 1: with like really high expectations, like I based on the
- 1:26:13Speaker 1: hunt I had the year before and based on like
- 1:26:15Speaker 1: some scouting i'd done, I was like, you know what,
- 1:26:17Speaker 1: I bet you can kill like a hud buck easy,
- 1:26:20Speaker 1: Like I want to shoot a a no brainer, like
- 1:26:23Speaker 1: a buck that I see that's like, oh, no doubt
- 1:26:25Speaker 1: about it. It was like what I thought, And so
- 1:26:27Speaker 1: because of that, I passed on a bunch of like
- 1:26:29Speaker 1: nice bucks that probably body size there, it's a little
- 1:26:33Speaker 1: I had a hard time judging body size because a
- 1:26:35Speaker 1: lot of these deer out there are smaller bodied than
- 1:26:38Speaker 1: our Midwestern bucks. So when I was looking at them,
- 1:26:42Speaker 1: I was like, it's probably young deer. Probably young deer.
- 1:26:44Speaker 1: When I went back and looked at video after seeing
- 1:26:47Speaker 1: all these deer and being able to compare them to others,
- 1:26:49Speaker 1: and now I'm kind of like, okay, I was probably
- 1:26:51Speaker 1: like a mature buck. It wasn't really big antler deer.
- 1:26:53Speaker 1: It was like a hundred inch hundred ten inch eight pointer,
- 1:26:57Speaker 1: But that that could have been a three or four
- 1:26:58Speaker 1: year old buck that I passed. Um. Looking back, I
- 1:27:01Speaker 1: was like, dude, I should have shot that bucklet what
- 1:27:03Speaker 1: that would have been an awesome experience to kill another
- 1:27:05Speaker 1: public land buck out there that I was waiting a
- 1:27:07Speaker 1: river for half a mile and doing all this stuff
- 1:27:09Speaker 1: and you know, living out of my camp. I mean,
- 1:27:11Speaker 1: that would have been a great accomplishment and a great
- 1:27:14Speaker 1: way to end that trip. But I went into this
- 1:27:16Speaker 1: with this arbitrary um goal that you know, maybe maybe
- 1:27:21Speaker 1: it's maybe it was a snake, maybe it wasn't. I
- 1:27:23Speaker 1: don't know, but um, but I think going into it
- 1:27:26Speaker 1: now next year, this year, I guess I'm gonna have
- 1:27:29Speaker 1: a little bit different goals when it comes to like
- 1:27:31Speaker 1: those types of public land hunts, especially if you've never
- 1:27:34Speaker 1: been to the area before, like was the case for me. Um.
- 1:27:37Speaker 1: You know, a decent buck, the best buck of those
- 1:27:40Speaker 1: that you saw. That's something that from me personally, that
- 1:27:43Speaker 1: seems like a pretty decent goal that I think I can,
- 1:27:45Speaker 1: you know, something I can work towards, but something also
- 1:27:47Speaker 1: that's achievable um and can end with some venison and
- 1:27:50Speaker 1: the freezer, which is the ultimate end all product I'm
- 1:27:53Speaker 1: looking for. UM. So, I don't know, I think I
- 1:27:56Speaker 1: just blacked out and started rambling too. It's good to
- 1:27:59Speaker 1: have those at us called it's purge, you purge the system. Yeah, yeah, yeah,
- 1:28:03Speaker 1: you gotta reflect on this kind of stuff, and I've
- 1:28:05Speaker 1: I've been doing a lot of looking back on these
- 1:28:07Speaker 1: things of the past year, but haven't necessarily been able
- 1:28:09Speaker 1: to verbalize at all. But I don't know going into
- 1:28:12Speaker 1: the two thousand eighteen season. Sorry, go ahead, I was
- 1:28:16Speaker 1: gonna say going into the two thousand eighteen season. Right now,
- 1:28:20Speaker 1: I've got like a goal of I want to kill
- 1:28:21Speaker 1: mature buck in Michigan without to be holy Field, but
- 1:28:23Speaker 1: there's also a couple others maybe they're gonna be in
- 1:28:25Speaker 1: the area, and I'd be stoked with any one of those.
- 1:28:28Speaker 1: I wanna, you know, do some more public land hunts,
- 1:28:31Speaker 1: this boundary waters public land hunt. I'd like to kill
- 1:28:33Speaker 1: any kind of deer the Montana trip. I'd like to
- 1:28:35Speaker 1: kill a mature ish deer, a three year older better um.
- 1:28:39Speaker 1: And I want to do some cool experiences, like I
- 1:28:41Speaker 1: want more of these trips that take me into new
- 1:28:43Speaker 1: places and test my board, test my boundaries, and you know,
- 1:28:48Speaker 1: just doing different stuff. And that might result in me
- 1:28:51Speaker 1: killing a great, big mature buck. It might result in
- 1:28:53Speaker 1: me killing nothing, but that's okay. Like i I'm looking
- 1:28:56Speaker 1: for an experience and like something that's gonna push me
- 1:28:59Speaker 1: to learn more and become a better deer hunter. Um,
- 1:29:02Speaker 1: I don't need to kill what I love to. Sure,
- 1:29:06Speaker 1: that'd be awesome, Um, but I don't need that to
- 1:29:08Speaker 1: be a happy hunter, right absolutely. Man, that's the same
- 1:29:12Speaker 1: thing with me. You know, Iowa probably go after a
- 1:29:15Speaker 1: mature buck like That's how that's kind of what I
- 1:29:17Speaker 1: always start off with. Who knows what will happen. I'm
- 1:29:21Speaker 1: not gonna make any promises. I'm not gonna try to
- 1:29:23Speaker 1: have any expectations. Just go out and look for that
- 1:29:26Speaker 1: deer that makes me go okay, yeah, here we go,
- 1:29:29Speaker 1: you know. And then elk for Colorado, probably the first
- 1:29:35Speaker 1: elk that presents a shot, whether it's a cow or
- 1:29:37Speaker 1: a bowl. You're gonna take a cow? Why not? I've
- 1:29:41Speaker 1: never killed I've never killed an elk before. I think
- 1:29:45Speaker 1: it would be a good start too, you know, my
- 1:29:49Speaker 1: Western adventures. Uh. And then you know, and that's if
- 1:29:53Speaker 1: I do another thing I was gonna I was gonna say,
- 1:29:55Speaker 1: is that there's a potential I go to do another
- 1:29:57Speaker 1: out of state white tail slash mule deer hunt. So
- 1:30:01Speaker 1: and that that would be probably a first deer, especially
- 1:30:05Speaker 1: if it's a mule deer, right, first mule here. That
- 1:30:08Speaker 1: presents a shot, whether it's a dough or or a buck.
- 1:30:11Speaker 1: And you know a lot of that depends on what
- 1:30:13Speaker 1: you're seeing on the trips, right, whether you think you
- 1:30:16Speaker 1: can hold out for a buck or not, or a
- 1:30:18Speaker 1: bowl or not or whatever. But just the experience of
- 1:30:21Speaker 1: harvesting a new species is a wind for me, right,
- 1:30:25Speaker 1: heck yeah, in a new area, new species, have that experience.
- 1:30:30Speaker 1: I think it's a good idea to try shoot a
- 1:30:32Speaker 1: cow on mynament next elk hunting trip, I might even
- 1:30:35Speaker 1: just try shoot a cow, even though I have killed
- 1:30:37Speaker 1: a branch chandler bull, because that meat. To just have
- 1:30:41Speaker 1: that experience first off of quartering, skinning and quartering on
- 1:30:44Speaker 1: an elk and carrying that thing out off the mountain
- 1:30:46Speaker 1: on your back, I mean, that is something that I
- 1:30:47Speaker 1: think everyone should experience. Um. And then having a freezer
- 1:30:51Speaker 1: full of elk, that too is something everyone should experience. UM.
- 1:30:55Speaker 1: So I hope that works out for you, because that's
- 1:30:58Speaker 1: that's some good good stuff. Have fun, have fun. And
- 1:31:06Speaker 1: back in the day, I made a promise to myself
- 1:31:09Speaker 1: when I when I was doing all this filming, I said,
- 1:31:11Speaker 1: if I'm not if I start to not have fun
- 1:31:13Speaker 1: anymore because of filming, I'm going to not film anymore.
- 1:31:17Speaker 1: So I stopped filming and I fell in love with
- 1:31:22Speaker 1: bow hunting again. I feel I was more observant with
- 1:31:25Speaker 1: my surroundings and not worried about, you know, the footage
- 1:31:29Speaker 1: and all that ship and just being out there and
- 1:31:32Speaker 1: being one on one. And I feel like for me,
- 1:31:35Speaker 1: I can still document that. I might pick up and
- 1:31:38Speaker 1: start filming again. Who knows, but it's all about fun
- 1:31:42Speaker 1: and I wanna because this is you know, why we
- 1:31:46Speaker 1: we think, we dream, we think about this deer hunting
- 1:31:50Speaker 1: and hunting all the year around. Why put any additional
- 1:31:54Speaker 1: stress on yourself by you know, having these unrealistic expectations
- 1:31:58Speaker 1: going into a season of having to harvest a big
- 1:32:00Speaker 1: buck or having to get it on film or you know.
- 1:32:04Speaker 1: Some guys like that and that's cool, But for me,
- 1:32:07Speaker 1: I just feel like, I don't know, I want to
- 1:32:10Speaker 1: ride that wave, dude, Yeah, yeah, that's it's It's something
- 1:32:13Speaker 1: that I know I'm always going to kind of struggle
- 1:32:15Speaker 1: with finding that right balance point because I love the goals.
- 1:32:19Speaker 1: I love pushing for something difficult. I love that next
- 1:32:22Speaker 1: going for that next thing. But I also am always
- 1:32:25Speaker 1: struggling with how do I not get too worked up
- 1:32:29Speaker 1: about it? Because you know, you want to, like you said,
- 1:32:32Speaker 1: you want to still be enjoying the moment. So for me,
- 1:32:36Speaker 1: that's something I think that my whole life I'll be
- 1:32:37Speaker 1: always working on because of my personality. But ma'n tell
- 1:32:42Speaker 1: you what. Right now in February, there's no time where
- 1:32:45Speaker 1: there's no time where it's all sorts of optimism. At
- 1:32:48Speaker 1: this point, it's just optimism and excitement and planning and
- 1:32:52Speaker 1: thinking about what's coming up this year. And uh, dude,
- 1:32:56Speaker 1: I'm pumped. The other day the other day on Twitter,
- 1:32:59Speaker 1: you said, hey, Dan, you know you're stoked and you're like,
- 1:33:03Speaker 1: what an eight point five or and I said, yeah,
- 1:33:05Speaker 1: I said that was an eight point nine stoke level. Yeah,
- 1:33:08Speaker 1: like I was a six. Yeah that was disappointed. Well, no,
- 1:33:12Speaker 1: I mean you got it. You can't be a ten.
- 1:33:14Speaker 1: Like there's there's years where I was ten the entire
- 1:33:17Speaker 1: like white whoa. Now I got like kids and ships,
- 1:33:22Speaker 1: So I can't be like, I can't be flipping through
- 1:33:25Speaker 1: Google Maps looking for pinch points, you know, oh while
- 1:33:29Speaker 1: my kids are crying and my wife's like, get off
- 1:33:32Speaker 1: my pad right. Yeah, you know, I can't be I
- 1:33:34Speaker 1: can't be that that ten level ten anymore. But after
- 1:33:37Speaker 1: this podcast, man, I'm telling you, I'm telling you I'm
- 1:33:40Speaker 1: I'm mid eights right now. That's good. It's a good
- 1:33:43Speaker 1: place to be. I'm right there. I'm right there with
- 1:33:45Speaker 1: youre um Man. I wish we didn't have so much
- 1:33:47Speaker 1: snow because I really want to do some scouting. I
- 1:33:49Speaker 1: really want to. That's another goal of mine this series,
- 1:33:52Speaker 1: to ramp my scouting to another level. I really want
- 1:33:56Speaker 1: to take it to a whole different level. I've I've
- 1:33:58Speaker 1: scouted plenty in the past, but it's not been as
- 1:34:02Speaker 1: much as I think I need to. So I love it.
- 1:34:05Speaker 1: It's like like here's me. I have all these goals,
- 1:34:08Speaker 1: like because I'm in the same boat with you, Like, hey, man,
- 1:34:10Speaker 1: I want to get out and I want to do
- 1:34:12Speaker 1: some more scouting. I have three kids, and you're like, hey,
- 1:34:15Speaker 1: I want to do this thing that takes up more time,
- 1:34:17Speaker 1: and I have I have another thing that I just
- 1:34:20Speaker 1: added to my life that takes up more time. Yeah. Kids, kids, kids, Yeah,
- 1:34:27Speaker 1: that's that's the constant. Uh well, now it's a new
- 1:34:31Speaker 1: constant for me and for you. It's been a long time,
- 1:34:34Speaker 1: constant challenge, but we'll figure it out. I'm a big
- 1:34:37Speaker 1: and I'm sure there's a little naivety here because I
- 1:34:39Speaker 1: haven't experienced yet. But I'm a big believer in the
- 1:34:42Speaker 1: fact that you can make things work if they matter,
- 1:34:44Speaker 1: and if you get your kids involved, if you get
- 1:34:46Speaker 1: your family involved, and so I'm excited to keep doing
- 1:34:51Speaker 1: to keep pursuing my white tail passion and my my
- 1:34:54Speaker 1: other passions I have, and to to share that with
- 1:34:57Speaker 1: my family. That is very exciting to me too. So
- 1:35:00Speaker 1: I think you think anybody's still listening. I don't think so.
- 1:35:04Speaker 1: I think it's literally you and me talking to each
- 1:35:06Speaker 1: other here and we can talk about whatever we want. Now.
- 1:35:09Speaker 1: This is like just our own personal chit chat time
- 1:35:12Speaker 1: and right. But you know, I think we did pretty
- 1:35:15Speaker 1: good considering the fact that we had nothing planned for this,
- 1:35:18Speaker 1: because we had a whole we had a whole slate
- 1:35:21Speaker 1: planned out for our guests. I had all sorts of
- 1:35:23Speaker 1: questions and ideas and topics and that all went out
- 1:35:28Speaker 1: the window. So we managed to fill an hour in
- 1:35:31Speaker 1: ten minutes of time with nothing. So do you have
- 1:35:36Speaker 1: any final party thoughts? No? I think um uh I'm
- 1:35:42Speaker 1: gonna try to eat another peanut butter and jelly sandwich
- 1:35:44Speaker 1: before supper. And uh, I think that's it. That's I
- 1:35:49Speaker 1: guess that was the first thing that popped and j
- 1:35:53Speaker 1: alright right, well, thanks thanks for BS and me here, buddy,
- 1:35:58Speaker 1: and uh, let's let's get back together soon and record
- 1:36:01Speaker 1: that interview with with a great deer hunter who was
- 1:36:04Speaker 1: going to share some helpful information that we certainly did
- 1:36:07Speaker 1: not do. Okay, sounds good, all right, and that's gonna
- 1:36:12Speaker 1: be at folks, So just real quickly here, I want
- 1:36:16Speaker 1: to thank our partners to help make all this possible
- 1:36:18Speaker 1: so big thanks to sit Gear, Yetie Cooler's, Matthew's Archery,
- 1:36:21Speaker 1: Maven Optics, the White Tail Institute of North America, Trophy
- 1:36:25Speaker 1: Ridge and hunt Terra Maps. And finally, thank you all
- 1:36:29Speaker 1: for being with us on this one. Thanks for tuning
- 1:36:31Speaker 1: in for our little BS impromptu conversation. Hopefully still enjoyed that,
- 1:36:36Speaker 1: and of course, until next time, stay wired to Hunt.
