Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: We'll talk to Adam Capell. He is pinch hitting today
- 0:02Speaker 1: for Jeff Mooscher on the sports Bash Football at four
- 0:05Speaker 1: and of course Football at four is powered by the
- 0:07Speaker 1: Inside of the Birds podcast. It's brought to you by
- 0:09Speaker 1: the Fanatics Sports book at Ocean Casino Resort in Atlantic City.
- 0:13Speaker 1: And you know, the Eagles make that trade. We talked
- 0:15Speaker 1: to Adam yesterday. But obviously Adam, now that the trade
- 0:19Speaker 1: has been made, everyone is seemingly trying to figure out why,
- 0:24Speaker 1: why did this happen? Why couldn't they salvages? Now, there's
- 0:27Speaker 1: many Eagle fans I'd like to get, you know, the
- 0:29Speaker 1: pulse from you. A lot of our Eagles fans are
- 0:32Speaker 1: texting in and saying good Riddange, they're done with this guy.
- 0:35Speaker 1: It seemed like it doesn't seem that the fans are
- 0:37Speaker 1: all that broken up of a player of this magnitude
- 0:41Speaker 1: walking or getting traded out the door.
- 0:43Speaker 2: Well, Mike, So Monday night we had a for a
- 0:47Speaker 2: Patreon group level three people. We actually had a special
- 0:54Speaker 2: show for them. We did you know we every week
- 0:56Speaker 2: we answer questions privately and nothing is off. You could
- 1:00Speaker 2: ask us anything you want. It's a lot of stuff
- 1:03Speaker 2: we don't cover. We give them stuff that's not out there.
- 1:05Speaker 2: It's long story short, it's pretty cool stuff. And it's
- 1:08Speaker 2: also great to get feedback from those people because their
- 1:13Speaker 2: diehard Eagles fences that are really smart. So I could
- 1:16Speaker 2: tell you that that room was packed. Nobody was an
- 1:22Speaker 2: AJ Brown fan in there anymore. Once you got traded,
- 1:24Speaker 2: they had enough of them. The drama behind the scenes,
- 1:28Speaker 2: you know, I was we were telling them for two
- 1:29Speaker 2: years about the relationship between Hurts and AJ was not good.
- 1:33Speaker 2: They're distant, They're not you know what they once were was.
- 1:35Speaker 2: I came up with this. One of the people who
- 1:38Speaker 2: I've been getting information from, said, like, I think, what
- 1:40Speaker 2: if someone you met on the road comes to a
- 1:42Speaker 2: friend of yours. You know, maybe you met them at
- 1:46Speaker 2: you were with a bunch of people, you had similar interests,
- 1:49Speaker 2: you became friendly somehow, you want up working for the
- 1:52Speaker 2: same business, and then you learn that you're two completely
- 1:55Speaker 2: different people. So it's the Hurts thing and the AJA
- 1:59Speaker 2: thing is personality driven. The other part of it is
- 2:02Speaker 2: I heard that Mike Carfillow clip I could definitely agree
- 2:04Speaker 2: with them. I don't agree with on everything that he said,
- 2:06Speaker 2: but I one that we definitely agree with, and I'll
- 2:08Speaker 2: take it a step further. On the field, AJ had
- 2:12Speaker 2: a big problem not getting the ball in time. Well,
- 2:13Speaker 2: who was throwing in the football? Jalen Hurts. That had
- 2:17Speaker 2: nothing to do with the offense coordinator. That AJ always
- 2:20Speaker 2: held that against him without saying it, and that's kind
- 2:23Speaker 2: of part of In fact, the big part of his
- 2:26Speaker 2: angst and wanting to be out is like he just
- 2:28Speaker 2: wants the football when he wants it now. I would
- 2:30Speaker 2: also add from talking to a lot of people who
- 2:33Speaker 2: know what's going on, you know, the players last year
- 2:37Speaker 2: were frustrated with the simplicity of the offense and how
- 2:41Speaker 2: teams were able to kind of figure out what was
- 2:43Speaker 2: going on. And that's coming from a lot of different people. Mike,
- 2:46Speaker 2: It's so that it wasn't just Hurts and Brown and
- 2:51Speaker 2: Hurts not playing well enough. The run game was horrendous
- 2:54Speaker 2: last season. Like, let's not forget about that. You know,
- 2:57Speaker 2: it's interesting, what if the run game was great again.
- 3:00Speaker 2: Don't you think it would be a little bit easier
- 3:02Speaker 2: to pass it because things would not be so obvious,
- 3:04Speaker 2: You would have a little bit better balance. It's it's
- 3:08Speaker 2: really hard. It Hurts is not a big volume passer,
- 3:10Speaker 2: you don't want to put a lot of passes on him.
- 3:12Speaker 2: But when things are in a rhythm, things tend to
- 3:14Speaker 2: look better.
- 3:16Speaker 1: Yeah. And I like the way that Chris Long, he
- 3:18Speaker 1: was on his podcast and he basically, you know, has
- 3:22Speaker 1: equated it to you leased the car, you got the
- 3:24Speaker 1: four years out of it, you traded it in, and
- 3:27Speaker 1: now it's time to just ride a new car out.
- 3:29Speaker 1: You got what you wanted out of him, a super Bowl,
- 3:32Speaker 1: You move on. But it is kind of don't you think,
- 3:34Speaker 1: Adam that man, It is sad how it got to
- 3:37Speaker 1: this point that this is still a guy that probably
- 3:39Speaker 1: has another year or two of good football you would
- 3:41Speaker 1: think left in him, right. It is sad that it's
- 3:44Speaker 1: like to the point where the fans are like, good
- 3:45Speaker 1: riddance for a guy who by all accounts was not
- 3:48Speaker 1: a bad dude, didn't get into trouble off the field. However,
- 3:51Speaker 1: it was the little nitpicky things that you know, he
- 3:55Speaker 1: just admitted that, hey, I could have done better on
- 3:57Speaker 1: social media, I could have handled things better. And I
- 3:59Speaker 1: think the fans just got so tired of it. And
- 4:01Speaker 1: how often do you see a situation where they are
- 4:05Speaker 1: done with the player of that magnitude, not rarely, but.
- 4:09Speaker 2: And then the wins would be a mini thirty for thirty.
- 4:11Speaker 2: That one was much worse because AJ. Yes, the one
- 4:16Speaker 2: thing that really bothered me was that Minnesota game when
- 4:19Speaker 2: Hurts made some great throws and then that there are
- 4:22Speaker 2: a couple that were he didn't get the ball on
- 4:24Speaker 2: time when he said use me, but really use me,
- 4:29Speaker 2: well that was because he wasn't getting the ball in time.
- 4:31Speaker 2: That's exactly what that tweet was about, like why do
- 4:35Speaker 2: you need to do like his his his belief that
- 4:38Speaker 2: he felt like he needed to do that to put
- 4:39Speaker 2: that out there. It's just not being a good team.
- 4:42Speaker 2: And I know that the players like him. He's a
- 4:43Speaker 2: good mentor from talking to coaches where people have run
- 4:46Speaker 2: into over the years, but with AJ, especially with the Titans,
- 4:50Speaker 2: but an agent speak well with AJ from their players
- 4:53Speaker 2: on the Eagles. But Mike, it's it's a shame. You're right,
- 4:57Speaker 2: but you're right. There's no question that fans are absolutely
- 5:01Speaker 2: don't them. But can you imagine before we go to
- 5:04Speaker 2: other subjects here, can you imagine if this turlo Own
- 5:10Speaker 2: situation which happened in two thousand and five happened now Mike,
- 5:14Speaker 2: you couldn't get without five minutes about talking about it.
- 5:17Speaker 2: It would never go away, and it would be the
- 5:20Speaker 2: Mike the drama of the Teo situation and then what
- 5:22Speaker 2: became a court case as you know it just yeah,
- 5:26Speaker 2: I mean, I mean, that's another thing I wish we had.
- 5:30Speaker 2: Jeff and I should devote one show to talk about
- 5:33Speaker 2: the Teo situation. Get Brad chilters On, let him talk
- 5:35Speaker 2: about what he went through in two thousand and five.
- 5:38Speaker 1: Well, the replacements, Mackay Levion already with a hamstring situation.
- 5:42Speaker 1: I mean, so that's not the first, that's not putting
- 5:44Speaker 1: your best foot forward first. But Adam, we were talking
- 5:47Speaker 1: about we looked at San Francisco, the Rams and Seattle offenses,
- 5:54Speaker 1: and you look at the disparity and targets in those
- 5:57Speaker 1: offenses like Smith and Jigs seventy eight teen hundred yards.
- 6:00Speaker 1: The next guy doesn't even have a thousand, you know,
- 6:03Speaker 1: you know, same in San Francisco, same in La I mean,
- 6:06Speaker 1: Nikua had almost seventeen hundred yards. Vonte Adams doesn't even
- 6:10Speaker 1: have nine hundred. Do you anticipate that kind of thing
- 6:13Speaker 1: with Davonte Smith where he's getting yes, thirty fourteen hundred
- 6:16Speaker 1: yards and then the next guy's at like eight hundred.
- 6:19Speaker 2: Let's be careful. Davante's a tremendous player. He doesn't touch
- 6:23Speaker 2: coverage like a J. Brown, but he could line up
- 6:27Speaker 2: anywhere and he's better fundamentally than a J. Brown. But
- 6:31Speaker 2: AJ Brown's more explosive. Smith will dominate targets, There's no
- 6:35Speaker 2: question about it. But it's gonna be a little bit
- 6:37Speaker 2: of targets by committee right Sith will clearly lead them.
- 6:41Speaker 2: Lemon will be another starter. He'll get his share because
- 6:45Speaker 2: remember the displaced targets. Now with a J. Brown, I
- 6:47Speaker 2: mean you're you're you're talking about a ton of targets
- 6:50Speaker 2: are going to be divided up. Smith will lead them.
- 6:53Speaker 2: Then it should be Lemon. Then after that, I mean
- 6:57Speaker 2: you're looking at committee, got her, You're looking at Wicks
- 7:02Speaker 2: a little bit of Hollywood. Brown is not going to
- 7:03Speaker 2: be high targeted at all, but he's gonna be their
- 7:06Speaker 2: nine route runner. He's going to be their their shot
- 7:08Speaker 2: play guy. And then look Eli Stowers, Mike, He's he's
- 7:13Speaker 2: going to be as a court from another team who
- 7:15Speaker 2: did his tape. Because we're trying to figure out what
- 7:17Speaker 2: this West Coast offense is going to look like he said,
- 7:20Speaker 2: this is less to do with the West Coast. He said,
- 7:22Speaker 2: he's strictly going to be a matchup player on his career.
- 7:24Speaker 2: You're not going to have him out there to block
- 7:26Speaker 2: very much because he's gonna have to angle block. He's
- 7:28Speaker 2: not going to be able to take anyone head on,
- 7:30Speaker 2: and you're gonna have to get him out of his
- 7:31Speaker 2: own way because he's still very raw as a blocker.
- 7:34Speaker 2: He's clearly needs two or three years to be able
- 7:36Speaker 2: to do it, but they're gonna have. The thing is
- 7:39Speaker 2: the depth of the target group will be good, but
- 7:42Speaker 2: you don't have that physical target like a J. Brown.
- 7:44Speaker 2: That's just what you're missing.
- 7:46Speaker 1: Uh. Any concern for you, Adam about Lemon already having
- 7:50Speaker 1: a hamstring situation and worth monitoring or no cause for concern.
- 7:55Speaker 2: Well, here's the thing though, Mike. So you've got you've
- 7:59Speaker 2: got eight or nine offseason practice, six OTAs in the
- 8:02Speaker 2: mandatory camp. The practices we keep telling people are exactly
- 8:06Speaker 2: the same. There's no difference. She said. Everybody has to
- 8:08Speaker 2: be there for the mantory camp next week. Like, if
- 8:11Speaker 2: he does not want up practicing, You're like, it's not
- 8:13Speaker 2: that he's not going to start. You just don't like
- 8:16Speaker 2: that this new offense he's got to learn. He's not
- 8:19Speaker 2: getting timing down with herts. He's not gonna be able
- 8:20Speaker 2: to do it till training camp. Theoretically, we'll see if
- 8:22Speaker 2: he could work next week. Metal reps are great, but
- 8:25Speaker 2: you're not actually practicing like that. There's a major difference.
- 8:28Speaker 2: You can mimic it. I've seen this for twenty seven years.
- 8:31Speaker 2: These guys mimic what they're like whatever they're allowed to do.
- 8:34Speaker 2: It's moving your feet a little bit. There's since you
- 8:38Speaker 2: try to mirror certain routes. It's you could only walk
- 8:41Speaker 2: yournell out a run or even jog. But it's not
- 8:43Speaker 2: the same thing, Mike. And now you're in the classroom.
- 8:46Speaker 2: That's important. You can ask questions. You're watching tape of practice,
- 8:50Speaker 2: but it's not the same thing. So yeah, it's just
- 8:52Speaker 2: it's not a concern for the season or training camp.
- 8:55Speaker 2: It's just that he's not getting those reps again to
- 8:58Speaker 2: finish this off I learned my lesson, and I'll admit it.
- 9:02Speaker 2: I was completely wrong about this. When Tyre kill was
- 9:05Speaker 2: traded to the Dolphins, I was like, listen, I do radio.
- 9:08Speaker 2: I've done radio for WHB every Thursday for seven or
- 9:11Speaker 2: eight years. I said, there's a zero chance guys at
- 9:13Speaker 2: the Chiefs to win a Super Bowl next season. Boops,
- 9:15Speaker 2: I was reponning. I totally got it wrong. I learned
- 9:18Speaker 2: my lesson with great coaching, and I was a great quarterback.
- 9:21Speaker 2: Play with great coaching, you could play small ball. They
- 9:24Speaker 2: played small ball. Kelsey became a bigger factor. If you
- 9:27Speaker 2: look at their receiver card, you go, oh, wait a minute,
- 9:29Speaker 2: are you sure that they were the twenty twenty two
- 9:35Speaker 2: Chiefs would die for the Eagles receiver cord they have now.
- 9:38Speaker 2: But great coaching, great execution got it done.
- 9:41Speaker 1: Yep. And of course the Eagles off the practice field today.
- 9:45Speaker 1: They got one more OTA and then the mandatories next
- 9:49Speaker 1: week before they take about a month hibernation. The last
- 9:52Speaker 1: one is the lost AJ Brown. But they did fill
- 9:56Speaker 1: his spot on the roster with Elijah Mitchell, who interesting
- 10:00Speaker 1: running back a couple of years ago. In fact, had
- 10:02Speaker 1: a really good year in San Francisco a few years back.
- 10:04Speaker 1: I would imagine long shot here though.
- 10:07Speaker 2: Yeah, well a couple Here's the thing about him, when
- 10:12Speaker 2: you talked about when he played, well, he can't kind
- 10:15Speaker 2: of out of nowhere because he's a smaller back. He
- 10:18Speaker 2: was so explosive as a one cut runner. He's five ten.
- 10:22Speaker 2: I know he's listened to fifteen, but if you saw
- 10:25Speaker 2: him up close, as I did a training and keep,
- 10:26Speaker 2: he looks a lot smaller now. He might put on weight, Mike,
- 10:30Speaker 2: since he was drafted to get to two fifteen. That's
- 10:32Speaker 2: a different stort. When I saw him, he's much smaller,
- 10:35Speaker 2: but his ability to make one kind of get up feeld.
- 10:37Speaker 2: But Mike, he's been hurt. Isn't paud of carry Mike?
- 10:41Speaker 2: Jeff and I talked about this with Andrew. We did
- 10:42Speaker 2: a roundtable which I hope everybody gets to listen to.
- 10:45Speaker 2: It's available. We did it this morning. He is unbelievable
- 10:51Speaker 2: with a one cut explosiveness, but that's all he can do.
- 10:54Speaker 2: He's not powerful. He doesn't play to his new listed
- 10:56Speaker 2: size of I guess he puts some weight on. He
- 11:01Speaker 2: is a one cut runner. He can get downhill, mikey,
- 11:03Speaker 2: but he's not powerful. He doesn't play to that weight.
- 11:06Speaker 2: But you know what it does. Here's a guy who
- 11:07Speaker 2: knows the West Coast system is going to go to
- 11:10Speaker 2: weyber zone blocking. He's a one cut runner. He brings
- 11:13Speaker 2: competition for Damian Pierce, who, as I told folks when
- 11:16Speaker 2: they sign him, folks, when the Texans moved to a
- 11:20Speaker 2: zone system, Pierce was awful. He just looked like a
- 11:23Speaker 2: completely different back. And he's never recovered and he doesn't
- 11:28Speaker 2: fit the scheme and deals are running. I'm not sure
- 11:30Speaker 2: why he's here for it, but they're gonna have a
- 11:33Speaker 2: lot of competition. Mike will Shipley's gonna have some competition
- 11:35Speaker 2: this summer, no doubt.
- 11:36Speaker 1: Yeah. By the way, Elijah Moore nine hundred and sixty
- 11:39Speaker 1: three yards as a rookie in San Francisco. That was
- 11:41Speaker 1: five years ago, by the way, but a guy who
- 11:44Speaker 1: can also, you know, catch the ball a little bit.
- 11:46Speaker 1: Nineteen catches for one hundred and thirty seven yards that
- 11:49Speaker 1: year with that was the San Francisco year when he
- 11:51Speaker 1: was with San Francisco. He had two years at San
- 11:54Speaker 1: Francisco where he had some decent numbers. He played with
- 11:57Speaker 1: Kansas City a year ago here in one game.
- 11:59Speaker 2: Yeah, he just turned twenty eight. He's been on IR
- 12:02Speaker 2: three times. He and he's had so many different injuries,
- 12:07Speaker 2: a lot of knee injuries, and they just I know,
- 12:09Speaker 2: for fantasy people like he was a fit. He was
- 12:12Speaker 2: what I would call the fantasy flash in the pan.
- 12:14Speaker 2: He was a six round pick of Luisi out of
- 12:17Speaker 2: Louisiana Lafayette, and he kind of came out of nowhere.
- 12:22Speaker 2: It was either LUs He or Louisy Lafayette. I don't remember,
- 12:24Speaker 2: but I just remember like, wow, who is this guy?
- 12:27Speaker 2: And I went to camp, you know, I was talking
- 12:29Speaker 2: to the Niners front up and said, oh god, we
- 12:31Speaker 2: found those guys to perfect fit for a system. And
- 12:33Speaker 2: don't forget he went to the West Coast scheme with
- 12:36Speaker 2: Kansasy and the Andy Reid unfortunately didn't work out.
- 12:38Speaker 1: All right, we'll get out with this. Now that AJ
- 12:40Speaker 1: Brown's God, they move on. Miles Garrett is with the Rams.
- 12:44Speaker 1: Everybody's starting to set things up here. The Eagle's still
- 12:48Speaker 1: to you, what does it take for them to be
- 12:50Speaker 1: a super Are they a Super Bowl contender? Without AJ Brown?
- 12:53Speaker 2: Still like, what we'll do is we'll do Tuesday segment
- 12:57Speaker 2: on this. This is actually Jeff and I are probably
- 12:59Speaker 2: going to do our top ten things that the Eagles
- 13:02Speaker 2: must do this season to make another Super Bowl run.
- 13:04Speaker 2: But the one thing that we have not talked enough about.
- 13:07Speaker 2: And look, we didn't know this last summer that the
- 13:10Speaker 2: Eagles offensive line would be in shambles for the run game.
- 13:12Speaker 2: We didn't know how beat up they were. They have
- 13:15Speaker 2: to run the ball better, Mike's significantly better to be
- 13:18Speaker 2: a solid playoff team. They're not gonna get away with
- 13:20Speaker 2: it because they don't have AJ Brown now on the outside,
- 13:23Speaker 2: and they're gonna have to manufacture points. That's another thing
- 13:26Speaker 2: they're gonna have to do on offense. But they got
- 13:28Speaker 2: to be able to run the football better. It's just
- 13:30Speaker 2: I cannot believe how bad they were running football. It
- 13:32Speaker 2: could not be any worse mic this season. They have
- 13:35Speaker 2: to be better, have to have all.
- 13:36Speaker 1: Right, Well, we'll certainly be looking at all that stuff
- 13:39Speaker 1: as the offseason really goes into hybridation mode next week
- 13:43Speaker 1: after the mandatory OTAs. But the Eagles, of course straight
- 13:46Speaker 1: AJ Brown. We knew that was coming, and now he's
- 13:49Speaker 1: out and doesn't see people are all that angry about it.
- 13:51Speaker 1: Adam Kaplan, thanks for pinch hitting man, all right, Adam
- 13:54Speaker 1: Kaplan from the Inside of the Birds podcast. He jumps
- 13:57Speaker 1: in for Jeff today and of course Andrew will be
- 14:00Speaker 1: here on tomorrow's show.
