- 0:00Speaker 1: Now, from the Star Reynolds Sports Desk, your 93.3 KKRFM
- 0:05Speaker 1: Sports Headlines.
- 0:07Speaker 2: Good morning, happy Wednesday from Seahawks headquarters in Renton, the
- 0:10Speaker 2: Virginia Mason Athletic Center. Headlines are brought to you by
- 0:12Speaker 2: Frostbrook Coors Light, as cold as the Rockies. The Seahawks
- 0:17Speaker 2: have made official here in the last few minutes that
- 0:19Speaker 2: they have indeed signed running back Robert Henry Jr. off
- 0:21Speaker 2: the Washington Commanders practice squad, as reported a couple nights ago.
- 0:25Speaker 2: He goes straight on to the 53-man roster, which is
- 0:27Speaker 2: why I think he's going to play. Undrafted rookie from
- 0:30Speaker 2: Texas San Antonio is now a Seahawk after the Joe
- 0:34Speaker 2: Mixon failure of passing a physical. The Seahawks also announced
- 0:38Speaker 2: they assigned running back Dante McMillan to the practice squad.
- 0:42Speaker 2: They're trying to get hold for their game Sunday against
- 0:44Speaker 2: the 4-0 San Francisco 49ers for the NFC West lead
- 0:47Speaker 2: at Lumen Field. I'll be watching today at practice to
- 0:50Speaker 2: see if Leonard Williams is able to be on the
- 0:51Speaker 2: field after that ankle injury got late in the Chargers game.
- 0:54Speaker 2: Kyle Cotta, I know, they sure could use him this weekend.
- 0:59Speaker 2: And Ty Okada returned to practice last week. The safety
- 1:01Speaker 2: was yet to play this season. We'll see if he's
- 1:04Speaker 2: on the field today. Zach Charbonnet, Mike McDonald said earlier
- 1:07Speaker 2: this week, might be taking team reps this week, though
- 1:10Speaker 2: he is not going to play. And then I'll see
- 1:12Speaker 2: if Henry's on. I'm expecting him to be on the field.
- 1:14Speaker 2: And as I said, in the lineup, at least for depth.
- 1:17Speaker 2: On Sunday, the Kraken lost 6-2 at home to the
- 1:20Speaker 2: Vegas Golden Knights last night. Bad luck. Brandon Montour's broken
- 1:24Speaker 2: stick on a slap shot from the point. Led to
- 1:27Speaker 2: a goal when it was 2-0 and a cracker on
- 1:29Speaker 2: the power play early in the second period. Game turned
- 1:31Speaker 2: on that. Montour was fighting Vegas' captain by the end
- 1:34Speaker 2: of the match. We'll talk about that later. Kind of
- 1:36Speaker 2: liked that.
- 1:37Speaker 3: Kind of liked it.
- 1:38Speaker 2: Did you? Yep.
- 1:40Speaker 3: Just a little bit.
- 1:42Speaker 2: Ashley Ryan on RKJR pointed out the good news for
- 1:45Speaker 2: the Kraken is they play the Calgary Flames again on
- 1:47Speaker 2: October 30th.
- 1:49Speaker 3: Let's go.
- 1:51Speaker 2: The only team they've beaten so far. Kraken's next game
- 1:53Speaker 2: is Friday at Detroit. Start of a five-game road trip.
- 1:56Speaker 2: It'll be right here on KJR. Major League Baseball playoffs.
- 1:59Speaker 2: The Brewers and Padres are playing a really good series
- 2:01Speaker 2: right now. It's 2-1 Milwaukee after the San Diego's 4-3
- 2:04Speaker 2: home win last night. Dodgers beat the Braves. Best pitcher
- 2:07Speaker 2: Chris Sale in Atlanta. So LA has a two games
- 2:10Speaker 2: to one lead in that best of five. Today it's
- 2:12Speaker 2: the American League. Chicago's at home trying to close out
- 2:15Speaker 2: Cleveland up 2-0. The White Sox are. And the Yankees
- 2:18Speaker 2: come home to the Bronx down 2-0 to Tampa Bay.
- 2:21Speaker 2: Alex Cora is declining to manage the Phillies as he
- 2:24Speaker 2: was offered to do for next season. He says he's
- 2:26Speaker 2: not going to manage anybody in 2027. So maybe not
- 2:30Speaker 2: the Mariners either. The NFL canceled Kyle Juszczyk's fine for
- 2:34Speaker 2: celebrating that the league had interpreted as a beer chug
- 2:38Speaker 2: and now realized it was chugging juice. That's his nickname,
- 2:41Speaker 2: Kyle Juszczyk's juice. Yeah.
- 2:44Speaker 3: What was that?
- 2:46Speaker 2: Don't think of other things to do like. Officials who
- 2:49Speaker 2: push players.
- 2:49Speaker 3: Even if it was a beer.
- 2:52Speaker 2: Yeah, exactly. Now this break sponsored by Bud Light.
- 2:56Speaker 3: Yes, exactly.
- 2:59Speaker 2: Odo Beckham Jr. cut by the Giants, signing with the
- 3:02Speaker 2: Vikings practice squad. The Washington Huskies return home after their loss.
- 3:06Speaker 2: Should have been a win at USC. They're going to
- 3:07Speaker 2: play a Friday night game, robbing the high school teams
- 3:10Speaker 2: of their spotlight. Friday night at Husky Stadium. Thanks, TV.
- 3:13Speaker 2: 6 p.m. right here on KJR. There's like five national
- 3:17Speaker 2: TV games on Friday night for college football. That's just ridiculous. Yeah.
- 3:20Speaker 2: Let the high school kids play on Friday night. We'll
- 3:23Speaker 2: still have our high school football focus on Friday, regardless
- 3:26Speaker 2: of the Huskies playing on Friday night here on KJR.
- 3:29Speaker 2: Washington State Cougars. Jessamyn's going to be in Ogden, Utah.
- 3:31Speaker 2: They play Friday at 6 p.m. Another Friday game at
- 3:34Speaker 2: Utah State. And Lionel Messi scored a goal and shed
- 3:38Speaker 2: tears in his final national team match for Argentina. Oh, man.
- 3:43Speaker 2: I don't know how Anders is even getting to work
- 3:45Speaker 2: these days. Nah, he limped in. His wife probably must
- 3:50Speaker 2: be terrified.
- 3:51Speaker 3: Yeah, he's going to stay at work for the next
- 3:52Speaker 3: 12 hours.
- 3:54Speaker 2: Now on with the Wednesday show. Seahawks and the 49ers
- 3:58Speaker 2: playing on Sunday. I'm out here for the practice press
- 4:00Speaker 2: conference and locker room day. Greg Bell and Jessalyn McIntyre
- 4:03Speaker 2: as we are every weekday, 10 a.m. to noon. Jessalyn's
- 4:06Speaker 2: back at the Elliott Bay Studios in foggy downtown Seattle.
- 4:09Speaker 3: Very lonely.
- 4:10Speaker 2: Sorry, left you again. It's okay.
- 4:13Speaker 3: It's okay. I'm getting used to it.
- 4:16Speaker 2: Yeah, sorry. Good morning.
- 4:17Speaker 3: Football season descends.
- 4:18Speaker 2: Yes.
- 4:19Speaker 3: And Greg is just a peace out person.
- 4:22Speaker 2: We're split. Yes, we are.
- 4:24Speaker 3: But that, you know what, gives us two angles.
- 4:27Speaker 2: That's true.
- 4:28Speaker 3: Let's go with that.
- 4:29Speaker 2: That's true. I'm told this is National Coaches Day. Is
- 4:32Speaker 2: that true?
- 4:33Speaker 3: I mean, there's a National Everything Day, but I guess so.
- 4:36Speaker 2: You should say hi to your dad for that, right? Well,
- 4:39Speaker 2: you would say hi anyway, but yeah. Coach Mack back
- 4:42Speaker 2: in Long Island.
- 4:43Speaker 3: Yeah, return of the Mack. Let's go.
- 4:45Speaker 2: National Coaches Day. Coaches all out there, including our high
- 4:48Speaker 2: school coaches that we focus on every Friday. Happy Coaches Day,
- 4:52Speaker 2: if it is that. I was told it was that.
- 4:55Speaker 2: Happy Coaches Day to them. What we got on the
- 4:58Speaker 2: show today, what are the Seahawks doing about all their penalties? Well,
- 5:02Speaker 2: they're yelling at each other. Ernest Jones talked about that.
- 5:06Speaker 2: Bad luck for the Kraken last night. Then fighting. And
- 5:09Speaker 2: then Ian Furness, strong play-by-play night for Ian last night
- 5:11Speaker 2: on the TV side.
- 5:12Speaker 3: Oh my gosh, he sounded so good.
- 5:14Speaker 2: He did.
- 5:15Speaker 3: And he looked fantastic.
- 5:16Speaker 4: You only see the people who are calling on TV
- 5:19Speaker 4: every once in a while, but that hair was on point.
- 5:23Speaker 2: He does have like the gray fox, silver fox thing going,
- 5:26Speaker 2: doesn't he?
- 5:26Speaker 3: Yeah, he aged really well.
- 5:29Speaker 2: We'll go live to the Bay Area at 11 o'clock.
- 5:31Speaker 2: We're going to talk to my pal Matt Barrows about
- 5:33Speaker 2: the 4-0 49ers, about Brock Purdy, 11 touchdowns against just
- 5:37Speaker 2: one interception. The number that jumped out at me most
- 5:40Speaker 2: when I was looking at the 49ers, Jess, third down percentage,
- 5:45Speaker 2: conversion percentage for the 49ers right now is 57.5% through
- 5:50Speaker 2: four games.
- 5:50Speaker 3: That's a scary number.
- 5:51Speaker 2: That's really high.
- 5:53Speaker 4: Yes.
- 5:53Speaker 2: And that tells me they're succeeding on first down. And
- 5:58Speaker 2: much of the success the Seahawks had last year in
- 6:00Speaker 2: throttling Kyle Shanahan's offense in three games was limiting them
- 6:04Speaker 2: on first and second down, limiting Christian McCaffrey in particular.
- 6:08Speaker 2: and causing third and longs, which is not where Brock
- 6:11Speaker 2: Ferdie and Shanahan want to be. And Nick Emanwari was
- 6:14Speaker 2: the main reason for that. And that's the key to
- 6:16Speaker 2: this game for me coming up, is Emanwari being the
- 6:19Speaker 2: full 2025 Emanwari, which he hinted like he was ready
- 6:23Speaker 2: to do, and the Seahawks are ready to use him
- 6:25Speaker 2: at it in the Chargers game. Remember I talked about
- 6:27Speaker 2: he played 79% of the snaps, up from 52% in Washington.
- 6:32Speaker 2: And he was playing at all three levels. He wasn't
- 6:33Speaker 2: just in the slot covering and dropping off the line
- 6:36Speaker 2: like he was in Washington. He was he was on
- 6:38Speaker 2: a four point stance as a defensive end. He was
- 6:40Speaker 2: blitzing off the edge as an edge. He was in
- 6:42Speaker 2: the Sam linebacker spot and a faux Sam linebacker hybrid
- 6:46Speaker 2: safety next to Ernest Jones. He was back deep in coverage,
- 6:49Speaker 2: like a safety. He was more like last year. And
- 6:53Speaker 2: you would think some of that was to get even
- 6:55Speaker 2: worried back into the flow, but some of that is
- 6:57Speaker 2: so Kyle Shanahan will have to prepare for that again.
- 7:00Speaker 2: And to get me more ready to do that full
- 7:03Speaker 2: go full meal deal on Sunday against Brock Purdy and
- 7:06Speaker 2: the 49ers. And, If he, Eamon Worre, does what he
- 7:09Speaker 2: did last year against San Francisco, and that is defend
- 7:12Speaker 2: George Kittle on pass plays down the field, tackle Christian
- 7:16Speaker 2: McCaffrey as soon as he caught passes in the flat
- 7:19Speaker 2: and short routes, then the Seahawks will win again. He's
- 7:22Speaker 2: that important to how they play defense against Kyle Shanahan.
- 7:27Speaker 2: So that's the key to me. Eamon Worre now being
- 7:30Speaker 2: back apparently full go to do everything he did last year,
- 7:33Speaker 2: which was absolutely throttle George Kittle. And Christian McCaffrey.
- 7:37Speaker 4: And I love the way that they eased him back in, too,
- 7:40Speaker 4: just to make sure. I know that he wanted to
- 7:43Speaker 4: go out, and he was probably champing at the bit
- 7:45Speaker 4: about getting back out there, but they did ease him
- 7:48Speaker 4: in the right way, at least by my perception.
- 7:51Speaker 2: Yeah, and you heard him say after the game when
- 7:53Speaker 2: I asked him about that, we played that clip the
- 7:55Speaker 2: other day, about how he loves this team for that
- 7:57Speaker 2: and how he thinks most teams would have just thrown
- 7:59Speaker 2: him back in 100% game one. He went nine snaps
- 8:03Speaker 2: in his debut against Arizona. in Week 2, and then
- 8:07Speaker 2: he went 52%, about 28 snaps in Washington, and then
- 8:11Speaker 2: now 78%. He's going to be above 80%, 90%, you
- 8:14Speaker 2: would think, for the rest of the year, health-willing, back
- 8:17Speaker 2: from that arthroscopic ankle surgery in July. But, yes, he
- 8:21Speaker 2: appreciates now. He didn't appreciate it in Arizona Week 2
- 8:24Speaker 2: when I talked to him in the locker room in Glendale,
- 8:26Speaker 2: and he says, I'm ready to go. What are we
- 8:27Speaker 2: waiting on? But he appreciates now how they ramped him up,
- 8:31Speaker 2: and let's face it, they still got 13 more games
- 8:33Speaker 2: plus a playoffs.
- 8:35Speaker 4: And hindsight is everything sometimes, but what I like is
- 8:39Speaker 4: where his mindset is at, that he's willing to learn
- 8:42Speaker 4: from that.
- 8:43Speaker 2: Right.
- 8:43Speaker 4: That he's willing to accept that they did the right
- 8:45Speaker 4: thing and he's not going to double down or anything.
- 8:50Speaker 2: You know where that's going to come in handy also
- 8:51Speaker 2: is in a couple years when his contract's up. Certainly will.
- 8:56Speaker 2: He's going to say, well, wait a minute. I might
- 8:57Speaker 2: stay with the team that take care of me and
- 8:59Speaker 2: that I love for how they took care of me
- 9:01Speaker 2: and the rapport I have with the head coach. Exactly.
- 9:05Speaker 2: He's in line for a couple years from now to
- 9:08Speaker 2: re-up on his contract. He's so central to the Seahawks
- 9:11Speaker 2: and Mike McDonald's plans on defense. 11.30, we will read
- 9:16Speaker 2: back your text. Your talkback's on the Tacoma Dodge text line, 49451.
- 9:19Speaker 2: The talkback's on the iHeartRadio app and our website, 933KGR. com.
- 9:23Speaker 2: It's the red microphone button at the top of the page.
- 9:25Speaker 2: Leave a 30-second or shorter voicemail message and Jessamyn will
- 9:28Speaker 2: play those back at 11.30. And 11.35 is Factor Fiction
- 9:32Speaker 2: brought to you by Lucky Eagle Casino and Hotel. Your
- 9:35Speaker 2: chance to win $ 1, 000 comes every day at 7.30, 11.30, 7.35, 11.35, 2.35,
- 9:40Speaker 2: and 3.35. Ian Furness coming up the road from his
- 9:46Speaker 2: home in Maple Valley here to Renton, the Seahawks headquarters
- 9:49Speaker 2: at 11.45. We'll find out what's on his show today,
- 9:51Speaker 2: usually as a Seahawk guest because it's right before practice.
- 9:54Speaker 2: The timing doesn't work out for our show. They're in
- 9:56Speaker 2: walkthroughs as I walk in to set up for the show,
- 9:59Speaker 2: and then they go into meetings right up until about noon,
- 10:03Speaker 2: vice versa. They go to meetings, and then they go
- 10:05Speaker 2: to a walkthrough right up until noon, and then Ian
- 10:08Speaker 2: will pick off a player, usually gets a player around
- 10:10Speaker 2: 1220 or so. Texting to 49451, text line, what concerns
- 10:16Speaker 2: you most about the Seahawks right now? Yeah, they're 3-1.
- 10:20Speaker 2: They lose a very winnable game over an inferior team
- 10:23Speaker 2: in Washington, and then they punt away, blow most of
- 10:27Speaker 2: a 27-6 lead against the Chargers. Sam Darnold with two interceptions,
- 10:31Speaker 2: two really bad interceptions out of the three he's thrown
- 10:34Speaker 2: the last two games. The running back situation we've talked
- 10:37Speaker 2: about a lot. The defense not yet being whole. What
- 10:41Speaker 2: worries you most? What concerns you most going into this
- 10:43Speaker 2: game against the 49ers? 4-9, 4-5-1, what concerns you about
- 10:46Speaker 2: the Seahawks? Justin, what concerns you about the Seahawks, if anything?
- 10:50Speaker 3: I mean, an ugly win is still a win.
- 10:53Speaker 4: So I'm not very concerned about them cleaning up what
- 10:56Speaker 4: we saw because, you know, the seven personal fouls, obviously
- 11:00Speaker 4: a huge amount of penalties, but the seven personal fouls
- 11:03Speaker 4: were what concerned me. But after hearing from Ernest Jones,
- 11:08Speaker 4: who is clearly a leader in that locker room, I'm
- 11:10Speaker 4: not that worried about it.
- 11:11Speaker 3: What I'm worried about is the pocket that Sam Darnold has.
- 11:14Speaker 4: And not pushing him into a situation to make those mistakes.
- 11:18Speaker 4: And I'm not necessarily blaming the offensive line 100% on that.
- 11:22Speaker 4: I am definitely putting some blame on Sam Darnold. I
- 11:26Speaker 4: want him to be 100%. And when he came back,
- 11:29Speaker 4: which I really thought Drew Locke would actually start that
- 11:33Speaker 4: second game.
- 11:34Speaker 3: I really did. But when he came back 100%, I
- 11:36Speaker 3: wanted to know he was 100%. And I don't know
- 11:38Speaker 3: that he is.
- 11:43Speaker 2: Yeah, he of course says he is, but it's– yeah,
- 11:46Speaker 2: I hear you. What would help him is if he
- 11:48Speaker 2: had a consistent running game. And 81 yards for Wilson
- 11:53Speaker 2: against the Chargers, but the Washington game he was– Darnold
- 11:57Speaker 2: was running for his life most of that game, running
- 11:59Speaker 2: away from pressure because they had no running game. 18
- 12:02Speaker 2: carries for 44 yards against Washington. So a more consistent
- 12:06Speaker 2: running game against San Francisco– So they don't have to throw.
- 12:09Speaker 2: The 45 throws against 18 runs in Washington, they're going
- 12:12Speaker 2: to lose most games when they're doing that, leading to
- 12:15Speaker 2: the three turnovers. So can they be effective running the
- 12:18Speaker 2: ball with Emmanuel Wilson now the number one, at least
- 12:21Speaker 2: until Jadarian Price comes off injured reserve in maybe a
- 12:24Speaker 2: month or so? He's not eligible until, again, until November
- 12:27Speaker 2: 2nd against Chicago at the earliest. And now today, officially,
- 12:32Speaker 2: onto the 53-man roster, Robert Henry Jr., undrafted rookie running back,
- 12:37Speaker 2: from Texas, San Antonio. He started his college career in
- 12:41Speaker 2: junior college. Some people thought he would get drafted because
- 12:44Speaker 2: he averaged 7 yards a carry, 6.9 yards a carry
- 12:47Speaker 2: his final college year, and he showed ability to catch
- 12:49Speaker 2: passes out of the backfield at UTSA. But he did
- 12:53Speaker 2: have some fumbling issues in college. And the other thing is, Jessamyn,
- 12:57Speaker 2: he's 5'9 and 196 pounds.
- 12:59Speaker 3: Right, he's not huge.
- 13:00Speaker 2: Right, and that doesn't project to a lot of NFL
- 13:02Speaker 2: rosters and plans. He would appear to be a much
- 13:06Speaker 2: different back than Emmanuel Wilson, who was supposed to be
- 13:09Speaker 2: the Seahawks' short yardage back, a more powerful run-you-over guy,
- 13:14Speaker 2: and less of the one-cut-go-speed-make-you-miss guy that Jadarian Price is.
- 13:19Speaker 2: The Seahawks were so looking for that dimension without Price
- 13:21Speaker 2: on Sunday against the Chargers, of course, that they put
- 13:24Speaker 2: Rashid Shaheed back there at tailback. And he ran a
- 13:27Speaker 2: 28-yard touchdown by just outrunning everybody to the left edge
- 13:29Speaker 2: on the first carry.
- 13:30Speaker 3: Would you run that back? Would you do that again?
- 13:33Speaker 2: I think so. Don't you?
- 13:34Speaker 3: Yes, I would.
- 13:36Speaker 2: Yeah, I think they're going to on Sunday. And it
- 13:38Speaker 2: also gave the 49ers defensive coaches something they'll now have
- 13:41Speaker 2: to game plan for. But where does Robert Henry Jr.
- 13:45Speaker 2: fit into this? It's not like he needs to ramp
- 13:47Speaker 2: up into football shape because he's been practicing daily with
- 13:50Speaker 2: the commanders on the practice squad. So he's been– he
- 13:54Speaker 2: was a standout for them in the preseason and then
- 13:56Speaker 2: went right into the regular season on the practice squad.
- 13:58Speaker 2: So he has been playing. It's not like a Joe
- 14:01Speaker 2: Mixon situation that even if he had signed and passed
- 14:03Speaker 2: his physical– he would have had to ramp up without
- 14:06Speaker 2: having been on a field since the end of the
- 14:07Speaker 2: 2024 season. Not so with Henry. He's going right on
- 14:11Speaker 2: to the 53, and Chuck asked me this morning at
- 14:13Speaker 2: 7 o'clock when I was on the morning show, as
- 14:15Speaker 2: I am every day, and he asked me about, what
- 14:17Speaker 2: do you think Henry will play? I said, yeah, he will,
- 14:19Speaker 2: because he's been practicing every day, and he goes right
- 14:22Speaker 2: on to the 53-man roster. That's the rules for the NFL.
- 14:25Speaker 2: If you sign somebody off another practice squad, he has
- 14:28Speaker 2: to go on to the 53-man roster of the acquiring team.
- 14:32Speaker 2: It's a little poaching deal that Teams all around the
- 14:35Speaker 2: league have pro personnel scouts that scour the practice squads
- 14:38Speaker 2: of other teams, and those guys are constantly eligible to
- 14:42Speaker 2: be snapped up by another team. So that's where the
- 14:45Speaker 2: Seahawks stand. I would think if I was a Seahawks fan,
- 14:49Speaker 2: I'm not. If I was a Seahawks fan, I would
- 14:51Speaker 2: be worried about the running back situation. You're not allowed
- 14:53Speaker 2: to be. Not a part of my job. But I
- 14:56Speaker 2: would be worried about the running back situation. Emmanuel Wilson
- 14:59Speaker 2: has never been a number one bell cow running back.
- 15:01Speaker 2: He was a 500-yard back for Green Bay last year.
- 15:05Speaker 2: And he's your guy now. How much can Robert Henry Jr.
- 15:08Speaker 2: share that load? George Helani, it seems to me, will
- 15:11Speaker 2: stay in a third down limited role, a specialty role
- 15:14Speaker 2: in the pass game. He's got to get better in
- 15:17Speaker 2: pass protection. We've talked about a couple times now this season,
- 15:20Speaker 2: more than a couple times, he's missed blocking assignments that
- 15:23Speaker 2: has gotten Sam Donald and the offense in trouble. He
- 15:26Speaker 2: missed an A-gap. Pass rush pressure on Sunday that cost
- 15:30Speaker 2: the Seahawks a possible touchdown that Jackson Smith and Jigba
- 15:32Speaker 2: was wide open down the middle of the field, and
- 15:34Speaker 2: Darnold didn't have time to throw it to him because
- 15:36Speaker 2: Helani didn't pick up the pressure. So they have issues
- 15:41Speaker 2: at running back, obviously, post Kenneth Walker, and the plan
- 15:44Speaker 2: was for Jadarian Price to solve most of those, and
- 15:47Speaker 2: he's not. He's on the injured reserve list. Still unknown
- 15:50Speaker 2: how long he's going to be on it. John Schneider,
- 15:53Speaker 2: the GM, said before the game on Sunday, it's not
- 15:56Speaker 2: a season-ending injury. but is an upper rib issue. Upper rib,
- 16:01Speaker 2: I mean, if it's cracked, fractured, would he be back
- 16:05Speaker 2: in four weeks? Maybe not. So we'll see what the
- 16:08Speaker 2: Seahawks do. They tried Joe Mixon. He apparently failed his physical.
- 16:12Speaker 2: We're going to ask Mike McDonald at 12 o'clock why
- 16:14Speaker 2: Mixon didn't sign after it looked like he was going to.
- 16:17Speaker 2: But yeah, that's where my concern would start right there
- 16:20Speaker 2: with the running game. A team that's based on Running
- 16:22Speaker 2: the ball, Jessamyn, has running backs that few people have
- 16:25Speaker 2: ever heard of.
- 16:26Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 16:27Speaker 3: Maybe that is a key weapon, Greg.
- 16:29Speaker 2: Maybe.
- 16:29Speaker 3: All of a sudden, we have no tape on this guy.
- 16:32Speaker 3: So who knows how to defend him?
- 16:36Speaker 4: I do love the alternate weapon of putting Rashid in
- 16:41Speaker 4: that position.
- 16:42Speaker 3: And I would 100% do it again.
- 16:44Speaker 4: And I know that they're going to draw up a
- 16:47Speaker 4: defense that is prepared for that if they see him
- 16:49Speaker 4: on the field. However, I just, I mean, I'm Susie Sunshine, okay?
- 16:55Speaker 4: I am always going to look at the sunny side
- 16:57Speaker 4: of the road. And I like the fact that these
- 17:01Speaker 4: are people that nobody knows about. And I know that
- 17:05Speaker 4: there are some undersized guys that might be out there.
- 17:08Speaker 3: I know that.
- 17:09Speaker 4: Physically, maybe not the clearest choice to be in that
- 17:13Speaker 4: position with what we've seen in attrition through signings and
- 17:17Speaker 4: Kenneth Walker and attrition through injury and Jadarian Price. However,
- 17:22Speaker 4: I do think that they still need to commit to
- 17:25Speaker 4: that run, and I hope.
- 17:27Speaker 3: They still do. They will. Good, good. And I want
- 17:32Speaker 3: to see that. I just want to see that from
- 17:35Speaker 3: this offense.
- 17:36Speaker 2: The trade deadline is November the 10th, 4 p.m. on
- 17:39Speaker 2: a Tuesday, and that is right before, what is that,
- 17:44Speaker 2: right after the Seahawks. They'll have played the Bears- and
- 17:47Speaker 2: they'll come off another game on Sunday, and then the
- 17:50Speaker 2: trade deadline is November 10th. John Schneider, the GM, has always,
- 17:56Speaker 2: and including this year, saved cap space for a midseason
- 17:58Speaker 2: move at the trade deadline. Rashid Shahid, Leonard Williams. Who's next?
- 18:03Speaker 2: Is it a running back? Is it a Tony Pollard?
- 18:06Speaker 2: Is it a running back who may be available? If
- 18:09Speaker 2: you trade for running– now, the Seahawks have 11 draft
- 18:11Speaker 2: picks next year. They have draft capital, late-round picks, multiple drafts,
- 18:15Speaker 2: to move if they wanted to acquire a running back
- 18:18Speaker 2: at the trade deadline. But if you're going to trade
- 18:22Speaker 2: draft picks, you're going to get a running back who's
- 18:24Speaker 2: currently playing for somebody, right? Either a starter or a
- 18:27Speaker 2: major contributor, or else you won't give a draft pick
- 18:29Speaker 2: for him. So that's another avenue that I'm sure John
- 18:33Speaker 2: Schneider is looking at now that the Joe Mixon deal
- 18:36Speaker 2: fell through. But the cupboard ain't exactly full with Jadarian
- 18:40Speaker 2: Price on injured reserve. They're planning to backfill Kenneth Walker.
- 18:45Speaker 2: isn't even on the field or able to practice right now.
- 18:48Speaker 2: Up next, the bigger, more pressing issue than even the
- 18:51Speaker 2: running back situation from the Chargers game were the penalties
- 18:54Speaker 2: that Jessamyn talked about. What are the Seahawks doing about
- 18:58Speaker 2: the team record? 150 yards and flags they had their
- 19:01Speaker 2: last game. Ernest Jones talks about that and more coming
- 19:04Speaker 2: up next. 11 o'clock, Matt Barrows from the Bay Area,
- 19:07Speaker 2: 49ers beat writer to talk about the Seahawks opponent that's
- 19:10Speaker 2: 4-0 coming into Lumen Field on Sunday. 11.35 is your
- 19:13Speaker 2: latest chance to win $ 1, 000 from Lucky Eagle Casino and
- 19:17Speaker 2: Hotel and our Factor Fiction Contest. All that's coming up
- 19:19Speaker 2: from Seahawk Headquarters, the Virginia Mason Athletic Center, and Renton
- 19:22Speaker 2: Live on 93.3 KJRFM. Hi, welcome back. We're at Seahawk Headquarters.
- 19:36Speaker 2: I am at Seahawk Headquarters here in Renton. Jessamyn's back
- 19:39Speaker 2: at the studios.
- 19:39Speaker 3: Yeah, there's no we in this, Greg.
- 19:40Speaker 2: I'm sorry. Yes, that was presumptuous of me and wrong.
- 19:44Speaker 2: I'm out here at Seahawks.
- 19:46Speaker 3: We are still a we.
- 19:48Speaker 2: We are still a we. I will be here because
- 19:51Speaker 2: Mike McDonald has a noon press conference. Maybe he'll describe
- 19:53Speaker 2: why Joe Mixon's not a Seahawk when it presumed he
- 19:56Speaker 2: was going to be. Apparently failed his physical. That's the presumption.
- 19:59Speaker 2: And then the Seahawks are going to practice today. And
- 20:01Speaker 2: as I mentioned at the top of the show, I'm
- 20:02Speaker 2: trying to see if Leonard Williams is on the field,
- 20:04Speaker 2: if Ty Okada remains on. Back to the practice field
- 20:07Speaker 2: like it was the end of last week. He's yet
- 20:08Speaker 2: to play the starting safety. The presumed starting safety is
- 20:11Speaker 2: yet to play this season with the hamstring issue. Leonard
- 20:13Speaker 2: Williams had that ankle issue at the end of the
- 20:16Speaker 2: Chargers game. Mike McDonald said he's, quote, optimistic. He said
- 20:19Speaker 2: that on Monday that Williams will be able to play.
- 20:22Speaker 2: That doesn't mean he's joined straight back to the practice
- 20:24Speaker 2: field today, though. So that's a couple of things I'll
- 20:26Speaker 2: be looking at today. And I'll also be looking at
- 20:28Speaker 2: Robert Henry Jr., the new running back and undrafted rookie.
- 20:31Speaker 2: who starred in the Washington Commanders preseason. The Seahawks just
- 20:35Speaker 2: swiped him off the Commanders practice squad. That became official
- 20:37Speaker 2: this morning that he is now on the Seahawks 53-man roster,
- 20:41Speaker 2: taking the place of Jadarian Price in the backfield, maybe
- 20:44Speaker 2: not as running back one just yet. I would think
- 20:46Speaker 2: Emmanuel Wilson is still the guy, but we'll learn more
- 20:49Speaker 2: about Robert Henry Jr., maybe talk to him as well
- 20:52Speaker 2: today before the Seahawks practice this afternoon. They have been
- 20:56Speaker 2: talking a lot this week about penalties here at the
- 20:58Speaker 2: Seahawks headquarters because they had 150 yards of them, the
- 21:01Speaker 2: most ever in the 51-year history of Seahawks football in
- 21:06Speaker 2: the game against the Chargers. It turned a 27-6 route
- 21:10Speaker 2: into a 30-23 nail-biter at the end, where it should
- 21:13Speaker 2: not have been for sure. The Seahawks had seven personal
- 21:16Speaker 2: foul penalties against the Chargers, four drive-extending penalties after they
- 21:21Speaker 2: had thought they'd been off the field on third down.
- 21:23Speaker 2: We talked about some of the most egregious penalties Nick
- 21:27Speaker 2: even worried getting ticked that a guard pushed him 15
- 21:29Speaker 2: yards down the field on a block, so he head-butted
- 21:31Speaker 2: him right in front of the back judge. 15 yards penalty.
- 21:35Speaker 2: The third and 24, Derek Hall hitting Justin Herbert after
- 21:38Speaker 2: he threw. Yeah, you can say that was just a
- 21:41Speaker 2: football play and Hall was committing to trying to sack him,
- 21:44Speaker 2: but don't even touch the quarterback on third and 24
- 21:46Speaker 2: and think your number one defense is probably going to
- 21:48Speaker 2: hold them back from that. It was a two-yard pass.
- 21:51Speaker 2: Became an automatic first down. Devin Witherspoon. On a tackle,
- 21:55Speaker 2: getting the running back out of bounds for a two-yard loss,
- 21:57Speaker 2: just rodeoed through him through the white, thick border of
- 22:01Speaker 2: the sideline. An easy call for the sideline official for
- 22:04Speaker 2: another 15-yard first down. Mike McDonald, after the game, called
- 22:08Speaker 2: those selfish penalties, said there's a spectrum of penalties we
- 22:11Speaker 2: have here. We have cost of doing business penalties, aggressive
- 22:14Speaker 2: penalties that they don't think maybe, but think Connor O'Toole
- 22:17Speaker 2: on the punt return, like we talked about the other
- 22:19Speaker 2: day when he went head up. face mask to face
- 22:22Speaker 2: mask with the Chargers returner, and the officials called that
- 22:24Speaker 2: unnecessary roughness. McDonald's cool with that. He's not cool with
- 22:28Speaker 2: the selfish penalties. So I asked McDonald, and I also
- 22:32Speaker 2: asked Ernest Jones, the leader, the signal caller of the defense,
- 22:36Speaker 2: what do you do to fix penalties? Do you actually
- 22:38Speaker 2: yell at them? This is what Ernest Jones said after
- 22:39Speaker 2: the game.
- 22:40Speaker 5: Hello.
- 22:42Speaker 2: Ernest, what's the.
- 22:43Speaker 6: Accountability on the issue that you and your coach are
- 22:47Speaker 6: talking about?
- 22:47Speaker 5: Pissed.
- 22:47Speaker 7: I mean, I think we're all collectively kind of pissed.
- 22:50Speaker 7: you can't allow you can't extend drives for offenses and
- 22:55Speaker 7: we did that a hell of a lot today so
- 22:57Speaker 7: we'll address it as a defense tomorrow.
- 22:59Speaker 2: We'll get it fixed going into next week sorry how
- 23:02Speaker 2: do you address it what's the just yelling.
- 23:04Speaker 7: Guy what do you how do you yeah That's how
- 23:07Speaker 7: we do it. No, we're going to talk. We talk
- 23:09Speaker 7: as men. Like, hey, like, we just can't have that. Like,
- 23:11Speaker 7: it's as simple as that. Some penalties are in the
- 23:13Speaker 7: heat of the moment. Not saying the guy's purposely trying
- 23:15Speaker 7: to hurt the team at all. But, you know, it's football.
- 23:18Speaker 7: Things happen. We just got to, you know, watch the
- 23:20Speaker 7: film on those penalties and see where we can be better.
- 23:22Speaker 2: Did any of those.
- 23:22Speaker 8: Feel like that's just the way they're calling it?
- 23:25Speaker 2: Like, you know, they had 14 minutes.
- 23:28Speaker 9: The Chargers had 14 penalties as well. Was some of
- 23:30Speaker 9: that just the way the refs were calling it?
- 23:31Speaker 7: Yeah, I mean, it felt like they were calling it.
- 23:33Speaker 7: Anything they'd seen it, they would just own it. And
- 23:36Speaker 7: a couple of those penalties, you know, you slow everything down.
- 23:40Speaker 7: Every play has a penalty in it. But in the
- 23:41Speaker 7: moments you're on the field, it doesn't always feel like
- 23:44Speaker 7: a guy's out of bounds. Or, you know, with the
- 23:46Speaker 7: rough in the pass, I think you get two steps.
- 23:49Speaker 7: It doesn't always feel like, you know, the guys, you
- 23:51Speaker 7: took your two steps or you didn't take your two steps.
- 23:53Speaker 7: So it's part of the game. We'll fix it, though.
- 23:56Speaker 2: Do you like those moments where the ball comes right
- 23:59Speaker 2: to you? I loved it. I love it.
- 24:01Speaker 7: I've been waiting on those. I've been waiting on one
- 24:03Speaker 7: of those. And I'm thankful. Good Lord blessed me with
- 24:07Speaker 7: one today. So, you know, happy for sure.
- 24:09Speaker 2: How do you feel about the linebacker play with you
- 24:11Speaker 2: and Drake both making picks?
- 24:14Speaker 5: Yeah, I told him.
- 24:15Speaker 7: I was like, we both went picks today and won. So,
- 24:17Speaker 7: I mean, that's a pretty solid day. You know, some
- 24:19Speaker 7: things that we'll clean up. But, you know, I'm happy
- 24:21Speaker 7: for him. Happy he was able to get his hand
- 24:23Speaker 7: on the ball, come down with it. You know, same
- 24:24Speaker 7: for me. And, you know, we've been stacking, you know,
- 24:28Speaker 7: four good games. So, we just got to keep getting better,
- 24:30Speaker 7: keep leading that defense.
- 24:31Speaker 10: I know it's hard to overlook all those penalties in
- 24:34Speaker 10: the second half. But taking those aside, I can feel
- 24:37Speaker 10: the way that the guys up front, the blitz, the
- 24:40Speaker 10: packages getting after.
- 24:41Speaker 2: Justin, would set the guys up in coverage for those
- 24:44Speaker 2: pick-offs too. I think we did.
- 24:45Speaker 7: I think we got after them up front, you know,
- 24:47Speaker 7: when there wasn't a penalty or anything like that. I
- 24:49Speaker 7: feel like we had control. But of course, you know,
- 24:52Speaker 7: you give teams life. You continue to give them, you know,
- 24:55Speaker 7: chance after chance. They're a good team. They're going to
- 24:57Speaker 7: make the plays. So I think we just got to
- 24:59Speaker 7: be better in that regards. A fair exception.
- 25:01Speaker 8: What goes into you being in the perfect spot there
- 25:04Speaker 8: for that play?
- 25:05Speaker 7: I mean, I think it's just a great call by
- 25:07Speaker 7: Mike that had me over there in that direction. And
- 25:09Speaker 7: I think from there, it's kind of just getting an
- 25:11Speaker 7: early read on routes, getting to your spot and then
- 25:15Speaker 7: seeing where you can make a play at, depending on
- 25:17Speaker 7: what they're doing.
- 25:18Speaker 2: As much as that wasn't going the way you guys
- 25:19Speaker 2: wanted in the second half, to get to finish it
- 25:22Speaker 2: with a big play on defense and trying to get that,
- 25:24Speaker 2: what do you think about that last moment for the defense?
- 25:27Speaker 7: Yeah, I think I'm a firm believer in this league.
- 25:30Speaker 7: Certain moments and how you win games, they set you
- 25:32Speaker 7: up for later on down the line. So there's going
- 25:34Speaker 7: to come another moment. There's going to be moments in
- 25:36Speaker 7: game where defense is going to be on the field.
- 25:39Speaker 7: So you need those stops. And moments like that just
- 25:42Speaker 7: builds confidence that you can do it, that you can
- 25:44Speaker 7: and you will go get those stops.
- 25:48Speaker 2: That's Ernest Jones, the signal caller and defensive leader for
- 25:52Speaker 2: the Seahawks, talking after the Chargers game when he had
- 25:56Speaker 2: an interception when Justin Herbert threw it right to him.
- 25:59Speaker 2: You heard him talk about him and Drake Thomas having interceptions.
- 26:02Speaker 3: He was blessed with that one.
- 26:04Speaker 2: I'll say it was thrown right to him as if
- 26:07Speaker 2: it came down from the heavens themselves. But superseding all
- 26:11Speaker 2: of that were the penalties, 150 yards. They're talking about
- 26:14Speaker 2: it a lot. They're talking about it. What I think, Jessamyn,
- 26:18Speaker 2: makes this an encouraging problem for the Seahawks, it's so preventable.
- 26:23Speaker 2: Just don't hit the quarterback on third and 24. Just
- 26:26Speaker 2: don't headbutt the opponent. Don't throw the guy into the bench.
- 26:30Speaker 2: I mean, they can fix that relatively easily and quickly,
- 26:34Speaker 2: I would think. I don't see this as a systemic
- 26:36Speaker 2: issue for this team.
- 26:38Speaker 3: I don't either.
- 26:39Speaker 4: I think that is probably one of the biggest fixable
- 26:43Speaker 4: problems that they had in that game. Like you said,
- 26:46Speaker 4: they erased a routing with those penalties. So if they
- 26:51Speaker 4: clean that up and that is an in-house thing, I
- 26:53Speaker 4: don't think coach McDonald has to do anything. I don't
- 26:56Speaker 4: think adding dirty or Brian, Brian Fleury, like no, no
- 27:00Speaker 4: coaches will have to do much about that.
- 27:04Speaker 3: I think that that is an in-house thing.
- 27:06Speaker 4: And you have a leader like Ernest Jones coming in
- 27:08Speaker 4: and cleaning it up and that'll be just fine.
- 27:11Speaker 2: Right. And when he, you heard him say, yeah, we
- 27:13Speaker 2: do yell it. It's like, yo man, cut this blank out.
- 27:17Speaker 2: And I mentioned on check this morning, When I first
- 27:20Speaker 2: started covering the NFL with the Raiders, I know I'm old, 2002,
- 27:23Speaker 2: they would fine players for stupid plays like that. Now
- 27:26Speaker 2: the collective bargaining agreement and the players union and everybody,
- 27:29Speaker 2: they've kind of reduced the amount of ways that players
- 27:33Speaker 2: can get fined anymore. But those are finable offenses, the
- 27:37Speaker 2: penalties they had against the Chargers. lose games. And we
- 27:41Speaker 2: talked just when you and I talked about on Monday,
- 27:43Speaker 2: most NFL teams would have beaten the Seahawks on Sunday
- 27:46Speaker 2: with 150.
- 27:47Speaker 3: Penalties with the penalties.
- 27:49Speaker 6: Yes.
- 27:49Speaker 2: Seven, seven personal thousand, four extended drives in the second half.
- 27:52Speaker 2: They would have, but the chargers are malfunctioning right now,
- 27:56Speaker 2: especially on offense. There's no way this charger should have
- 27:59Speaker 2: had 23 points against Seattle on Sunday. And people just
- 28:02Speaker 2: see the final score and say, well, the Seahawks defense
- 28:04Speaker 2: isn't what it was. Well, take away those penalties and
- 28:07Speaker 2: they don't have four more drives that they had in
- 28:09Speaker 2: two two scores in the second half, and all of
- 28:11Speaker 2: a sudden it looks more like a 27-6 game like
- 28:14Speaker 2: it was deep into the second half. I still think, Jessamyn,
- 28:18Speaker 2: this defense, if they just prevent these stupid, selfish penalties,
- 28:24Speaker 2: there aren't many teams, including Kyle Shanahan's 49ers, who can
- 28:28Speaker 2: drive the ball the length of the field multiple times
- 28:30Speaker 2: in a game for multiple touchdowns. And if you don't
- 28:33Speaker 2: score multiple touchdowns in an NFL game, you're usually not
- 28:35Speaker 2: going to win. And that's as simple as that can make,
- 28:38Speaker 2: the Seahawks' current state. Running game problems, Sam Darnold throwing
- 28:42Speaker 2: interceptions and has only had two games. These are his
- 28:44Speaker 2: two preseason games in some sense, because he didn't play
- 28:48Speaker 2: at all in the preseason. All of that notwithstanding, if
- 28:51Speaker 2: they don't turn the ball over and they don't give
- 28:53Speaker 2: other teams drives like they did against the Chargers, who's
- 28:57Speaker 2: going to beat them? Maybe the Rams, maybe Sean McVay's
- 29:00Speaker 2: offense last year was one of the only teams that
- 29:03Speaker 2: consistently drove the field for multiple touchdowns. against McDonald's defense,
- 29:07Speaker 2: which is returning intact now from last year. It has
- 29:11Speaker 2: not been that case until now. Nick Emanuori fully back.
- 29:14Speaker 2: Julian Love missed a game. Now he's back. They can
- 29:17Speaker 2: get Ty Okada back. They will have all 11 starters
- 29:20Speaker 2: from last season, counting Okada when he had to start
- 29:23Speaker 2: 11 games as an injury replacement. They'll have all 11
- 29:25Speaker 2: starters from the defense last year playing, including Josh Jobe,
- 29:29Speaker 2: including Julian Love back, including Nick Emanuori and the full
- 29:33Speaker 2: Nick Emanuori experience. So, To me, that's where the game lies.
- 29:37Speaker 2: Don't make mistakes. Mistakes football, they'll win. But you could
- 29:42Speaker 2: say that about a lot of teams. But you can't
- 29:44Speaker 2: say a lot of teams have the defense that Seattle does.
- 29:48Speaker 3: That is also true. I mean, defense wins championships, Greg.
- 29:51Speaker 2: Yeah, exactly. It won Seattle's last year for sure. But
- 29:56Speaker 2: that's where I see this game. Just don't give the
- 29:59Speaker 2: 49ers a short field, even though Purdy's humming. And I'm
- 30:03Speaker 2: going to talk to Matt Burrows at 11 o'clock, the
- 30:06Speaker 2: 49ers athletic beat writer.
- 30:07Speaker 3: And who said that you're his guy? He was very excited.
- 30:12Speaker 5: Thanks.
- 30:13Speaker 2: Matt and I go way back. We were both on
- 30:15Speaker 2: the Sacramento Bees staff. I was the Raiders beat writer
- 30:18Speaker 2: when they hired Matt to be the 49ers beat writer.
- 30:21Speaker 2: And he moved to Santa Clara to live with the
- 30:24Speaker 2: 49ers facility. Way back in 2002 when I first started
- 30:28Speaker 2: coming to Raiders. So we've known each other. We were
- 30:29Speaker 2: on the same staff together at the Sacramento Bee back
- 30:31Speaker 2: when McClatchy actually cared about sports sections. And now the
- 30:35Speaker 2: Sacramento Bee doesn't have one. And neither really does the
- 30:38Speaker 2: News Tribune. But Matt and I, yeah, we go way back.
- 30:43Speaker 2: I'm going to ask Matt at 11 o'clock, why is
- 30:46Speaker 2: Brock Purdy a 70% passer and 11 touchdowns and one
- 30:50Speaker 2: interception without a really strong receiving core? Yeah, he still
- 30:52Speaker 2: has Kittle. He's got Debo Samuel back. But I was
- 30:55Speaker 2: surprised to look at the 49ers stats. Samuel only has 12,
- 30:58Speaker 2: 13 catches through four games. You would think he might
- 31:01Speaker 2: be the only downfield receiving threat. Mike Evans seems to
- 31:04Speaker 2: be a shell of himself physically. And Mike Evans was
- 31:08Speaker 2: their big offseason acquisition to try to bolster that receiving core.
- 31:13Speaker 2: But now they've got Deebo Samuel back. I expect a
- 31:15Speaker 2: lot of the fly sweep, horizontal runs that the Seahawks
- 31:20Speaker 2: always see from Samuel when he's with the 49ers. I
- 31:23Speaker 2: would expect to see more of that as well and
- 31:25Speaker 2: a steady dose of Christian McCaffrey, which has been Nicky
- 31:29Speaker 2: Manwari's guy in the two games that they won last
- 31:32Speaker 2: year during the 49ers, the three points they held them
- 31:35Speaker 2: to in Week 18 down in Santa Clara, and it's
- 31:38Speaker 2: the absolute boat race in the divisional playoff game up
- 31:41Speaker 2: here in Seattle. One thing I did want to make
- 31:44Speaker 2: a note of before we go to breaking news this
- 31:46Speaker 2: morning down in Eugene, Oregon. Did you see this? Longtime
- 31:50Speaker 2: basketball head coach, men's basketball head coach Dana Altman announced
- 31:54Speaker 2: this morning that he's retiring right now. They're a week
- 31:57Speaker 2: before the Ducks are starting their season.
- 31:59Speaker 3: Yeah, that is interesting. Yeah, there should be some digging done.
- 32:04Speaker 3: I'll just say that.
- 32:05Speaker 4: Well, I mean, I do want to respect people because
- 32:08Speaker 4: You never know if there were health issues or anything
- 32:10Speaker 4: like that.
- 32:11Speaker 2: Right.
- 32:11Speaker 3: And you hope that there aren't. Something's going on there.
- 32:16Speaker 3: There's some controversy.
- 32:18Speaker 2: Because you've got the entire offseason to prepare for a
- 32:21Speaker 2: coaching change, right? And to do it a week before
- 32:23Speaker 2: the season. They're playing Seattle U next week. And then
- 32:27Speaker 2: they're gone. The season's on. And Dana Altman, after 16
- 32:31Speaker 2: years of coaching the Ducks and Eugene... has retired as
- 32:34Speaker 2: the head basketball coach at Oregon effective immediately. He's coached
- 32:38Speaker 2: 37 seasons. He was at Creighton before he went to Oregon.
- 32:42Speaker 2: So the Danny Sprinkles that you dub have one fewer
- 32:45Speaker 2: rival head coach to deal with. They still have the
- 32:48Speaker 2: talent at Oregon to deal with, but the head coach
- 32:50Speaker 2: Dana Altman is out. And yeah, I saw in the
- 32:53Speaker 2: text line 206 noting it's National Coaches Day and Dana
- 32:56Speaker 2: Altman just quit after 16 years.
- 32:59Speaker 4: Well, yeah, I don't like to make generalized thoughts about anything,
- 33:04Speaker 4: but something is going on is the correct way to
- 33:06Speaker 4: look at that.
- 33:08Speaker 2: Timing's weird. Seven days before the opener.
- 33:11Speaker 4: No, that's what I mean. Regardless of knowing what's going on,
- 33:15Speaker 4: something is.
- 33:17Speaker 2: Yeah, that's strange. That's a strange timing. Final four. Long-tenured
- 33:22Speaker 2: coach down the line. Dana Altman is retiring. Effective immediately.
- 33:25Speaker 2: That news happening this morning. Up next, let's talk about
- 33:28Speaker 2: the Kraken. Yeah, they didn't play the Flames last night,
- 33:31Speaker 2: so they didn't win. They played Vegas, one of the
- 33:33Speaker 2: better teams in the league. Stanley Cup contending, Stanley Cup
- 33:36Speaker 2: winning champions team came in here last night and took
- 33:39Speaker 2: care of the Kraken 6-2, but they didn't. The Kraken
- 33:41Speaker 2: just didn't roll over. Brendan Montour was in the center
- 33:45Speaker 2: of everything.
- 33:45Speaker 3: Monty, get it, Monty.
- 33:47Speaker 2: Loved it. Pivotal play of the game early in the
- 33:50Speaker 2: second period. We'll talk about that. And then you'll hear
- 33:53Speaker 2: Ian Ferdes' TV call of Brendan Montour's Fighting Mark Stone,
- 33:57Speaker 2: the captain of the Golden Knights. It made me laugh.
- 34:00Speaker 2: That's next. 11 o'clock, Matt Barrows, 49ers talk on why
- 34:04Speaker 2: they're 4-0 coming into Seattle on Sunday. And 11.35 is
- 34:07Speaker 2: Factor Fiction, your chance to win $ 1, 000 from the Lucky
- 34:09Speaker 2: Eagle Casino and Hotel. All that's coming up from CRK
- 34:11Speaker 2: Headquarters Live on 93.3 KJRFM. Hi, welcome back. Seahawks Headquarters.
- 34:33Speaker 2: Greg Bell, Justin McIntyre with you on 93.3 KJRFM. If
- 34:39Speaker 2: you might have heard it this morning on the morning show,
- 34:41Speaker 2: but Hugh Millen is having an in-person Chalk Talk tomorrow
- 34:44Speaker 2: at 5 p.m. It's hosted by Hugh Millen and Chuck Powell.
- 34:47Speaker 2: Anderson Hurst is going to be there, too.
- 34:49Speaker 4: If you want football drilled into your brain, that is
- 34:52Speaker 4: how to get it.
- 34:53Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 34:54Speaker 2: He does it on the radio. He's going to do
- 34:55Speaker 2: it in person with film. The whole Hugh Millen experience
- 34:59Speaker 2: tomorrow at Canoes Cabaret at the Tulalip Resort Casino. You
- 35:04Speaker 2: get to see the game live like an NFL quarterback.
- 35:07Speaker 2: You'll watch film. You'll hear Hugh Millen's perspective. Discover the
- 35:11Speaker 2: hidden details that separate winning football from losing football, it says.
- 35:14Speaker 2: It's your chance to sit on a one-of-a-kind film session
- 35:18Speaker 2: with Hugh Millen tomorrow. Doors open at 4.30 p.m. It's
- 35:21Speaker 2: a free event, but we'd like to get a head
- 35:23Speaker 2: count of how many seats you would want. If you
- 35:26Speaker 2: are planning on going, text your name, email, and how
- 35:28Speaker 2: many seats you want to reserve at the Tulalip Resort
- 35:31Speaker 2: Casino 430 door, 530 show tomorrow. Hugh Millen's Chalk Talk.
- 35:35Speaker 2: Text that to 49451, your name, your email, and how
- 35:37Speaker 2: many seats you want to reserve for Hugh Millen's Chalk
- 35:40Speaker 2: Talk tomorrow. We're going to have a Seahawks roundtable with
- 35:43Speaker 2: Chuck Powell, Anderson Hurst, Chris Kidd, Greg Bell, yours truly,
- 35:48Speaker 2: and I guess, to be determined because Hugh's going to
- 35:51Speaker 2: be commuting on his way up to Tulalip. You know,
- 35:55Speaker 2: it takes four hours to get up there sometimes. So
- 35:57Speaker 2: he won't be on the roundtable. It'll be myself at
- 36:00Speaker 2: 8 o'clock tomorrow, our weekly Seahawks roundtable tomorrow. Someone on
- 36:04Speaker 2: the text line asked when that was. Last night at
- 36:08Speaker 2: Climate Pledge Arena, the Seahawks, the Kraken played their second
- 36:12Speaker 2: home game of the NHL regular season. They lost 6-2
- 36:17Speaker 2: to the Vegas Golden Knights. And the game, I turned
- 36:23Speaker 2: it on right at the game's tipping point. 2-0, early
- 36:26Speaker 2: second period, Vegas is leading. The Kraken get a power play.
- 36:30Speaker 2: They had a power play early in the game for
- 36:31Speaker 2: a hit into the boards. And then they had another
- 36:33Speaker 2: one early in the second period with a chance to
- 36:36Speaker 2: get within 2-1. Brandon Montour is at the top right point,
- 36:40Speaker 2: out by the blue line. And he's lining up. He's
- 36:43Speaker 2: trying to hit a missile from the point. He winds
- 36:46Speaker 2: up and takes a slap shot. And his stick shattered
- 36:49Speaker 2: in two. I don't know if you saw this, Jessamyn,
- 36:50Speaker 2: when it happened.
- 36:51Speaker 3: I saw the replay, yes. I didn't see it live,
- 36:54Speaker 3: I'll be honest.
- 36:56Speaker 2: The stick just broke in half. And the puck goes
- 37:00Speaker 2: right to Vegas for a two-on-one break the other way, shorthanded. And,
- 37:04Speaker 2: of course, the one back was Brandon Montour without a stick.
- 37:07Speaker 2: He tried to dive and stopped the crossing pass on
- 37:10Speaker 2: the two-on-one. He couldn't do it. Pass went right under
- 37:13Speaker 2: him for an easy goal. And instead of a 2-1
- 37:15Speaker 2: game on the Kraken power play, it's 3-0 Vegas. They
- 37:19Speaker 2: end up going up at 1.5-0, send 6-1, and it
- 37:22Speaker 2: ends 6-2. But before it ended, Brendan Montour got his.
- 37:28Speaker 2: He went after Mark Stone, the captain of the Vegas
- 37:33Speaker 2: Golden Knights. This was the TV call from our guy
- 37:37Speaker 2: Ian Furness. And just listen to the tone of them
- 37:42Speaker 2: describing an NHL hockey fight. JT and Ian last night
- 37:46Speaker 2: on the Kraken TV network.
- 37:49Speaker 9: Conversation over in the corner between Stone and Montour. And
- 37:53Speaker 9: he says, they're going to go. I think, granted, they
- 37:55Speaker 9: dropped the clock.
- 37:56Speaker 2: We'll see.
- 37:57Speaker 9: Montour and Stone. Montour's chirping at him. Yeah, there they're
- 38:02Speaker 9: going to go.
- 38:05Speaker 6: So the captain for the Vegas Golden Knights and Brandon
- 38:09Speaker 6: Montour dropped the mitts here.
- 38:12Speaker 9: You wanted the response. You got the response.
- 38:14Speaker 2: And here it comes.
- 38:18Speaker 6: Monty took one, gave a couple more. Stone trying to
- 38:22Speaker 6: come back with a couple of rights. They're still going
- 38:27Speaker 6: at it. Stone throwing some right hands. Montour trying to
- 38:30Speaker 6: set him up. Monty with a wild right hand and
- 38:35Speaker 6: then wrestled with the ice by.
- 38:37Speaker 9: Mark Stone and that'll.
- 38:40Speaker 6: Come to an end.
- 38:42Speaker 2: Still smile on Monty's face there. See if Stone's up both.
- 38:48Speaker 2: Fired up after that major for fighting.
- 38:51Speaker 5: Both benches loved it as well.
- 38:53Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 38:57Speaker 6: You hear the stick taps from both teams. And Stone
- 39:03Speaker 6: playing it up to the crowd.
- 39:07Speaker 2: Ian Furness, JT Brown.
- 39:10Speaker 3: He knows hockey.
- 39:12Speaker 2: How hilarious is how matter-of-fact they were about that whole thing?
- 39:15Speaker 3: Oh, I loved it.
- 39:16Speaker 2: It was a perfect description. They're talking. They're going to
- 39:18Speaker 2: drop the gloves. It's going to happen right after. Oh,
- 39:21Speaker 2: here they go. Oh, there's a right hand. Oh, now
- 39:24Speaker 2: there's another right hand. He's trying to get them. They're
- 39:27Speaker 2: tapping the sticks on the boards.
- 39:28Speaker 8: I mean.
- 39:31Speaker 3: And you can hear the sticks tap.
- 39:33Speaker 1: Yes.
- 39:33Speaker 3: But that's a, that's people who know hockey.
- 39:37Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 39:37Speaker 2: It's like another day that ends in Y in the NHL.
- 39:40Speaker 2: I've been, I've been an NHL fan since Mary of
- 39:43Speaker 2: the Muse rookie season with the Penguins back when I
- 39:45Speaker 2: was eight years old. And the only glue in Pittsburgh,
- 39:47Speaker 2: the Civic Arena. I get it. Here we go.
- 39:50Speaker 4: Here.
- 39:50Speaker 9: You hear the stick taps?
- 39:56Speaker 4: I mean, I covered the AHL as my first assignment
- 39:59Speaker 4: in college. And it was, and they were fresh on
- 40:03Speaker 4: the ice on Thursdays, right?
- 40:04Speaker 3: They played Thursday through Sunday. It was four straight games.
- 40:07Speaker 4: So they were fresh on Thursdays and there were like
- 40:10Speaker 4: 10 fights a game.
- 40:12Speaker 3: And so I learned that about hockey.
- 40:14Speaker 4: That was my first induction into the sport as a reporter.
- 40:18Speaker 4: And I was like, huh, I could get into this.
- 40:22Speaker 4: And so I think that's why it's so acceptable in
- 40:24Speaker 4: that sport.
- 40:25Speaker 2: It's so accepted. The linesmen just stand there and wait
- 40:28Speaker 2: for the two guys to put themselves on the ice.
- 40:30Speaker 3: So do the refs.
- 40:31Speaker 2: The refs, yes. That's what I'm saying. Oh, the refs.
- 40:33Speaker 3: You said the linesmen.
- 40:35Speaker 2: Yeah, the linesmen are the ones, the refs are smart
- 40:37Speaker 2: enough to stay, the ones with the orange stripes on
- 40:39Speaker 2: their sleeves are smart enough to.
- 40:40Speaker 3: Stay out of the fight.
- 40:41Speaker 2: Okay, I see. The big guy linesmen are the ones
- 40:43Speaker 2: who wait for the breaking up the fight, but they
- 40:45Speaker 2: don't break it up until the dudes are on the
- 40:46Speaker 2: ice when they've lost their feet.
- 40:48Speaker 3: Well, they're kind of like, all right, that's enough.
- 40:50Speaker 9: Like, that's it.
- 40:51Speaker 2: Well, they never, ever break it up when they're still
- 40:53Speaker 2: on their feet and they're still on their skates. It's
- 40:56Speaker 2: only when they go to the ice. So they just
- 40:57Speaker 2: stand around and let them fight as long as they're
- 40:59Speaker 2: on their skates. And once they hit the ground, they
- 41:02Speaker 2: break it up because it's easier to break up then
- 41:03Speaker 2: and they're not going to get punched because then they're
- 41:05Speaker 2: just in clenching mode. But it's hilarious how matter-of-fact it
- 41:09Speaker 2: all is. From the linesmen, the officiating, from the announcers
- 41:14Speaker 2: to the players who just, hey, they both fought. Let's
- 41:17Speaker 2: tap our sticks on the boards. It's just... And it
- 41:21Speaker 2: was a draw. Nobody really– they didn't draw blood or anything.
- 41:23Speaker 2: It looked like a fight that was a draw. And
- 41:25Speaker 2: they both put each– it was just hilarious.
- 41:27Speaker 3: No, it's just like getting it out of your system.
- 41:29Speaker 4: And then they probably go drink beers with each other
- 41:32Speaker 4: later on.
- 41:34Speaker 2: It's just, yeah, we're going to go. And after the game,
- 41:37Speaker 2: Mark Stone told the Vegas Golden Knights beat writers that
- 41:41Speaker 2: he didn't like the chirping that Montour was doing about
- 41:43Speaker 2: his team. He didn't specify what that was, but he
- 41:45Speaker 2: said that he was talking– saying things about the Golden
- 41:48Speaker 2: Knights that he didn't like. It was hard to believe
- 41:50Speaker 2: that an NHL player, a professional hockey player, would be
- 41:52Speaker 2: worried about what someone's saying about his team that would
- 41:56Speaker 2: cause a fight. But anyway, I had to laugh at Ian. Yes,
- 42:00Speaker 2: grew up doing play-by-play in the AHL and on bus
- 42:03Speaker 2: rides through Utah and Deer and all the places he's been.
- 42:08Speaker 2: Just matter of factly calling an NHL hockey fight.
- 42:10Speaker 3: And it was perfect. It was literally perfect.
- 42:13Speaker 4: Yes, this is going to happen, and this is what
- 42:15Speaker 4: is happening, and you're watching it happen.
- 42:17Speaker 2: Exactly.
- 42:18Speaker 3: And that's hockey.
- 42:22Speaker 2: You imagine a fight like that in the NFL? People
- 42:25Speaker 2: would have been screaming. The announcers would be going nuts.
- 42:28Speaker 2: And hockey, yeah, just another day that ends in Y.
- 42:30Speaker 3: No, it's perfect. I mean, yeah, you have your malice
- 42:34Speaker 3: in the palaces. Right. Yeah, but that's because it's so unique.
- 42:39Speaker 2: Right. Yeah.
- 42:40Speaker 4: These guys have a lot of equipment on.
- 42:42Speaker 3: Just let them punch it out. It's fine. They already
- 42:46Speaker 3: lost a bunch of teeth anyway.
- 42:48Speaker 5: It's fine.
- 42:49Speaker 2: Great job by our guy, Ian Furness. That was the
- 42:51Speaker 2: first of 15 TV calls he's going to have when
- 42:54Speaker 2: John Forslund has national TV duty. Ian's going to be
- 42:56Speaker 2: doing the play-by-play for 14 more Kraken games on the
- 43:00Speaker 2: Kraken TV network. Kong and King 5. Yeah, I had
- 43:04Speaker 2: to play that. Hats off to him. Good job for me.
- 43:06Speaker 3: Heck yeah.
- 43:07Speaker 2: Up next, let's go talk about the 49ers. Why are
- 43:09Speaker 2: they 4-0? Why does Brock Purdy have 11 touchdowns against
- 43:12Speaker 2: one interception and throw in 70% completions with a receiving
- 43:15Speaker 2: core that's decimated? Why is the defense of the 49ers
- 43:18Speaker 2: averaging only 16 points allowed per game, third best, and
- 43:21Speaker 2: even better than the Seahawks so far this season? We'll
- 43:23Speaker 2: talk to Matt Barrows from the Bay Area. He's the
- 43:26Speaker 2: beat writer, the 49ers beat writer for the Athletic. Next.
- 43:29Speaker 2: And at 1135 Factor Fiction, your chance to win $ 1, 000
- 43:32Speaker 2: from the Lucky Eagle Casino and Hotel. All that's coming
- 43:34Speaker 2: up from Seahawk Headquarters Live on 93.3 KJRFM. Hi, welcome back.
- 43:54Speaker 2: Greg Bell. Destin McIntyre with you. I'm at Seahawks headquarters
- 43:58Speaker 2: for the Seahawks' first full practice day of the week
- 44:00Speaker 2: before they play the undefeated 49ers on Sunday at Lumen Field.
- 44:05Speaker 2: The Seahawks announced this morning what we had known for
- 44:08Speaker 2: a couple days now. They signed off the Washington Commanders
- 44:11Speaker 2: practice squad onto the 53-man roster. Running back Robert Henry Jr.
- 44:15Speaker 2: He's an undrafted rookie running back, a star of the Commanders'
- 44:18Speaker 2: preseason games from Texas San Antonio. He goes right on
- 44:22Speaker 2: the 53-man roster, so I expect him to play, actually.
- 44:25Speaker 2: on Sunday and make his Seahawks debut. We'll see if
- 44:27Speaker 2: he's on the practice field today. The Seahawks also signed
- 44:29Speaker 2: to their practice squad Dante McMillan, a running back. Is
- 44:33Speaker 2: that familiar to listeners? He might be if you're from
- 44:35Speaker 2: West Seattle. He is a West Seattle native, Dante McMillan is,
- 44:40Speaker 2: and he was a star at Chiefs South High School.
- 44:41Speaker 2: He was a Metro League Offensive Player of the Year
- 44:45Speaker 2: when he ran for 2,000 yards and 44 touchdowns as
- 44:48Speaker 2: a senior at Chiefs South. He played 50 career college
- 44:52Speaker 2: games for Weber State and Eastern Michigan. He was a
- 44:54Speaker 2: 1,000-yard rusher for Eastern Michigan last year. He was signed
- 44:57Speaker 2: as an undrafted rookie free agent by the Baltimore Ravens,
- 45:00Speaker 2: who had him do the entire training camp and then
- 45:03Speaker 2: released him at the end of August among the final
- 45:05Speaker 2: preseason cuts. And now here he is at the Seahawks.
- 45:08Speaker 2: How about that? A hometown kid from Cheeselt High School
- 45:10Speaker 2: in West Seattle signing with the hometown Seahawks on the
- 45:13Speaker 2: practice squad. I hope to talk to him today before practice.
- 45:17Speaker 2: Not only hoping to talk to, I know I will
- 45:19Speaker 2: talk to right now, to my buddy Matt Barrows. We've
- 45:21Speaker 2: been a longtime friend since we were both on the
- 45:23Speaker 2: Sacramento Bees NFL beat together. I covered the Raiders when
- 45:26Speaker 2: he covered the 49ers in the early 2000s. Matt is
- 45:30Speaker 2: on the Beacon Plumbing Hotline. He is the esteemed beat
- 45:34Speaker 2: writer for the Athletic on the San Francisco 49ers. Hello, sir.
- 45:37Speaker 5: Greg Bell, I mean, I don't even want to contemplate
- 45:45Speaker 5: When we work together on the beat, because it will
- 45:49Speaker 5: show our age, I think. But it was a while ago.
- 45:52Speaker 2: I'll just reveal 2002, 3, 4, 5. Yeah, it's been
- 45:58Speaker 2: a minute.
- 45:59Speaker 5: Yes, those were my first years on the 49ers beat,
- 46:02Speaker 5: and that was Dennis Erickson's first couple of seasons as
- 46:08Speaker 5: the 49ers head coach. So that's how far back. If
- 46:11Speaker 5: you look at time via who was the head coach
- 46:15Speaker 5: of these teams, mine would be Dennis Erickson.
- 46:19Speaker 2: And mine was Pete Carroll from the first time I
- 46:21Speaker 2: was covering the Seahawks in 2010. But yeah, Dennis Erickson,
- 46:24Speaker 2: another full circle moment from Everett High School, of course,
- 46:26Speaker 2: and Everett native, and was Matt Barris' first coach. Matt,
- 46:30Speaker 2: University of Virginia. You always were the Wahoo. hat for
- 46:34Speaker 2: University of Virginia Cavaliers. Okay, now the 49ers come up
- 46:38Speaker 2: here 4-0. I look at their roster of wide receivers.
- 46:41Speaker 2: I see an aging, beat-up Mike Evans. I see Debo
- 46:44Speaker 2: Samuel back on the team. I see George Kittle returning
- 46:47Speaker 2: from injury. And I see Brock Purdy with that lineup,
- 46:50Speaker 2: 11 touchdowns, one interception, 70% completions, and the most eye-popping
- 46:56Speaker 2: number to me, Matt, 57.5% on third-down conversions. What's going on?
- 47:01Speaker 2: What is Brock Purdy doing with kind of a banged
- 47:04Speaker 2: up mixed mass receiving core, no?
- 47:08Speaker 5: Yeah, for sure. I mean, they had six receivers in
- 47:11Speaker 5: uniform on Sunday, and the only two receivers who caught
- 47:16Speaker 5: passes were Mike Evans and Deebo Samuel. So it's not
- 47:21Speaker 5: like they're getting a boost from young guys or unknown guys.
- 47:26Speaker 5: It's It's that core, and that was one of the
- 47:29Speaker 5: themes of their win over the Broncos. This is an
- 47:32Speaker 5: old team, one of the oldest in the league, and
- 47:36Speaker 5: the 30-something guys stepped up. That was Debo Samuel, that
- 47:39Speaker 5: was George Kittle, that was Mike Evans playing with a
- 47:42Speaker 5: broken rib. So it really was sort of a gutsy effort,
- 47:46Speaker 5: and the question people are asking here is can they
- 47:50Speaker 5: sustain that? Can a group of 30-year-olds who are already
- 47:54Speaker 5: hurt um you know uh keep doing this into november
- 47:58Speaker 5: december and and january but the the third down uh
- 48:02Speaker 5: i think you're right to to point that out um
- 48:05Speaker 5: you know one of the things the 49ers have going
- 48:07Speaker 5: for them is that they're not hurting themselves uh they've
- 48:11Speaker 5: had very few plays of zero or negative yardage they
- 48:17Speaker 5: lead the the league in that category and their their
- 48:19Speaker 5: second fewest um They're second in the league in penalties.
- 48:23Speaker 5: So they're not facing a lot of and-long situations. They're
- 48:28Speaker 5: a lot of third and manageable. And so that, I think,
- 48:31Speaker 5: accounts for Purdy's good, solid third down rate.
- 48:38Speaker 2: As you know, Matt, from coming up here and covering
- 48:40Speaker 2: Seahawks 49ers games, habitually the first go-around with Debo Samuel
- 48:45Speaker 2: in the 49ers, the 49ers really used him in the
- 48:48Speaker 2: horizontal run game and beat the Seahawks with fly sweeps.
- 48:52Speaker 2: Quick passes and an open field. How are they using
- 48:54Speaker 2: the 30-year-old Debo Samuel in his second stint?
- 48:59Speaker 5: Same way. I mean, I would say there's even more
- 49:01Speaker 5: of that. Like I said, they had six receivers in
- 49:06Speaker 5: uniform for the Broncos game on Sunday. That meant that
- 49:11Speaker 5: they only had two tailbacks in uniform, and that was
- 49:14Speaker 5: Christian McCaffrey and Kalen Black. So it meant that Deebo
- 49:18Speaker 5: Samuel lined up as a tailback quite a bit. He
- 49:21Speaker 5: was essentially their third tailback there. And so he's been
- 49:25Speaker 5: getting a lot of carries, a lot of screens, a
- 49:29Speaker 5: lot of sweeps. They've been using him more on special
- 49:33Speaker 5: teams than they ever did. And so, you know, that's
- 49:36Speaker 5: sort of part of my theme is that I think
- 49:39Speaker 5: that they wanted to use Debo Samuel this year in
- 49:43Speaker 5: kind of spurts, in special circumstances. I think that they
- 49:48Speaker 5: feel like that's the best use of him. But Ricky
- 49:54Speaker 5: Pearsall gets hurt. Dajon's scribbling their top draft pick, a
- 49:59Speaker 5: guy who played at Washington State for a little bit.
- 50:03Speaker 5: He's hurt too. So they've had to lean on the
- 50:07Speaker 5: old guys. I mean, that's sort of the irony about
- 50:10Speaker 5: all this is that the 49ers have two themes here.
- 50:14Speaker 5: They're a team that gets hurt a lot. They've got
- 50:16Speaker 5: a lot of injuries, and they've got a lot of 30-year-olds.
- 50:18Speaker 5: But the injuries aren't happening to the 30-year-olds. They're happening
- 50:22Speaker 5: to the young bucks. So it's up to the 30-somethings
- 50:27Speaker 5: to carry them through.
- 50:29Speaker 2: George Kittle, is he fully back healthy-wise and as healthy
- 50:33Speaker 2: as a guy can be after four NFL games?
- 50:36Speaker 5: Yeah, and coming off an Achilles tear in mid-January. So
- 50:41Speaker 5: that was always a big question is, you know, will
- 50:44Speaker 5: he be able to start the season? Will he start
- 50:47Speaker 5: on top? How good can he possibly be to begin
- 50:51Speaker 5: the season? But he had a big touchdown Sunday against
- 50:54Speaker 5: the Broncos and almost reached 20 miles an hour, which
- 50:58Speaker 5: for a tight end is a rare feat and something
- 51:02Speaker 5: that Kittle did quite a bit earlier in his career.
- 51:06Speaker 5: And it just kind of shows how well he came
- 51:10Speaker 5: back from that That Achilles tear, that was a lot
- 51:15Speaker 5: of hard work. His teammates have emphasized that, that whenever
- 51:18Speaker 5: they saw him, he was working on his rehab. They
- 51:22Speaker 5: would go golfing. And, you know, when the other guys
- 51:25Speaker 5: were up at the tee box, he would be back
- 51:28Speaker 5: in the golf cart kind of doing kind of foot
- 51:31Speaker 5: and ankle injuries and moving that around. So it's something
- 51:35Speaker 5: that he was thinking about constantly. Um, and, uh, he
- 51:39Speaker 5: came back earlier than expected and came back better than expected. Uh,
- 51:44Speaker 5: he said they opened the season in Australia against the
- 51:48Speaker 5: Rams and he didn't feel right in that game, but
- 51:51Speaker 5: I think that was more about being in football shape. Um,
- 51:55Speaker 5: and that, that game sort of nudged him into the
- 51:59Speaker 5: proper shape. And he said weeks two, three, and four, he's,
- 52:03Speaker 5: he's felt like himself.
- 52:04Speaker 2: Since you brought it up, I was going to ask
- 52:06Speaker 2: you later about bringing it up now. Tell us about
- 52:08Speaker 2: the first NFL game, my regular season game in Australia,
- 52:11Speaker 2: the experience on and off the field. Was it something
- 52:14Speaker 2: you'd like to go back to? And there's been rumors
- 52:16Speaker 2: the Seahawks may play there next year. Is that something,
- 52:20Speaker 2: do you think that's an NFL place they should play?
- 52:22Speaker 2: How did it all go logistically, the field, the stadium,
- 52:25Speaker 2: the whole deal?
- 52:28Speaker 5: It really was a great experience. And, you know, personally,
- 52:33Speaker 5: I loved it. I mean, it's a terrific city Melbourne is.
- 52:37Speaker 5: It's a great sports city. All of the sports facilities,
- 52:41Speaker 5: the stadiums are right off the downtown. So it's all walkable.
- 52:45Speaker 5: It's all along the river. It's clean. It's a good city.
- 52:50Speaker 5: It's a great city. And I did notice a lot
- 52:54Speaker 5: of Seahawks jerseys there. So I think that the Seahawks
- 52:58Speaker 5: would be welcome with open arms. They're one of the
- 53:02Speaker 5: teams that markets there, right? They're one of the four
- 53:04Speaker 5: teams that markets. Okay.
- 53:06Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 53:07Speaker 5: Well, that was sort of the, the irony of the
- 53:09Speaker 5: 49ers Rams because the Rams were the home team. The
- 53:12Speaker 5: Rams are one of the teams that market in Australia,
- 53:17Speaker 5: but the Rams are, literally parachuted in. I mean, they
- 53:21Speaker 5: came in 24 hours before the game, didn't do much
- 53:25Speaker 5: of anything in the community. And then we're on a
- 53:28Speaker 5: plane as soon as the game ended. So I don't
- 53:31Speaker 5: think that the Rams won any new fans in Australia,
- 53:35Speaker 5: but I do think that Australia, a sports crazy country,
- 53:41Speaker 5: a country that's really embraced the NFL, would go for
- 53:45Speaker 5: the Seahawks. I just think that there's some cultural similarities there.
- 53:50Speaker 5: The cities kind of remind me of each other. Melbourne
- 53:53Speaker 5: doesn't have quite the topography that Seattle does, but that's
- 53:59Speaker 5: the city that it reminded me the most of, of
- 54:04Speaker 5: American cities.
- 54:05Speaker 2: So you think the NFL is there to stay? It
- 54:06Speaker 2: would be an annual thing in Melbourne, at least, or Australia,
- 54:09Speaker 2: at least.
- 54:11Speaker 5: I mean, I think it was a hit from a
- 54:13Speaker 5: lot of perspectives. You know, it got a lot of viewers.
- 54:20Speaker 5: Australians loved it. And the thing was is that it's
- 54:25Speaker 5: such a long trip. And it hurts you not only
- 54:31Speaker 5: going there if you're an NFL team, but coming back.
- 54:34Speaker 5: Week two for both of these teams was a concern. Now,
- 54:37Speaker 5: I think that they both won there. week two games,
- 54:40Speaker 5: so that'll ameliorate that a little bit. But, you know,
- 54:46Speaker 5: the head coaches, the teams themselves, don't love the 17-hour
- 54:52Speaker 5: time difference between the West Coast of the U.S. and Melbourne.
- 54:57Speaker 2: So Kyle Shanahan, of course, the preseason injury, the traffic
- 55:02Speaker 2: incident and the injuries, concussion, is he fully prepared? It
- 55:07Speaker 2: looks like on the sidelines he's full participate, full go.
- 55:09Speaker 2: Is he every day, seven days a week, working now?
- 55:13Speaker 5: Yeah, I would say that, I don't know, maybe two
- 55:17Speaker 5: and a half, three weeks into training camp, he was
- 55:20Speaker 5: back to himself. He absolutely was not himself early on.
- 55:26Speaker 5: He was having some real issues with the severe concussion
- 55:30Speaker 5: that he sustained in the car accident. Also broke his wrist,
- 55:34Speaker 5: broke ribs. Big laceration across his forehead. So it was
- 55:40Speaker 5: not a small thing at all. And I know that
- 55:44Speaker 5: he was struggling. He certainly couldn't put in a full
- 55:48Speaker 5: NFL coach workday when training camp began. But, you know,
- 55:53Speaker 5: that's in the rearview mirror now. Sorry about the pun there.
- 55:57Speaker 5: That didn't mean to do that. But I don't think
- 56:02Speaker 5: that he's thinking about that. It's certainly not hindering him
- 56:07Speaker 5: at this point.
- 56:09Speaker 2: Mike McDonald throttled him. Even in the game up at
- 56:11Speaker 2: week one here in Seattle, the 49ers 17-13 win. They
- 56:15Speaker 2: get 300-some yards, but they only scored 17 points. And
- 56:17Speaker 2: then three points in the week 18 game with the
- 56:19Speaker 2: division title on the line. And then, of course, the
- 56:21Speaker 2: boat race up here in the divisional playoff game at
- 56:24Speaker 2: Lumen Field. How much do you think and sense that
- 56:28Speaker 2: the notion that Mike McDonald has figured out Kyle Shanahan
- 56:31Speaker 2: and his offense, how much do you think that sticks
- 56:34Speaker 2: in Kyle Shanahan's craw? And what do you think he
- 56:36Speaker 2: might do differently this time that he didn't do in
- 56:39Speaker 2: the playoff game or Week 18?
- 56:42Speaker 5: Well, I think that. Mike McDonald's defense throttled just about
- 56:46Speaker 5: everybody last year. And then by the time they got
- 56:50Speaker 5: into that playoff game, the 49ers were running on fumes
- 56:55Speaker 5: at that point. I've covered a lot of injury-riddled teams
- 56:59Speaker 5: in San Francisco. Last year's was the most. So I
- 57:04Speaker 5: think that they're probably a little bit closer than that.
- 57:06Speaker 5: I mean, I don't think that the 49ers... would have
- 57:09Speaker 5: won in Seattle, even if they had been at full
- 57:13Speaker 5: strength or close to full strength. But as far as
- 57:17Speaker 5: what they'll do, I think one of the things that
- 57:23Speaker 5: I'd say Shanahan is most proud of to begin this
- 57:27Speaker 5: season is that they're running the ball better. And everything
- 57:31Speaker 5: in the Kyle Shanahan offense comes off of running the
- 57:34Speaker 5: ball better. And it's something that they really struggled at
- 57:39Speaker 5: last year. As good of a season as Christian McCaffrey had,
- 57:43Speaker 5: he was almost a thousand-a-thousand guy during the regular season.
- 57:49Speaker 5: A rare feat in the NFL. As good as he was,
- 57:53Speaker 5: there just were very few big gains on the ground,
- 57:58Speaker 5: consistent gains on the ground, etc., So they're doing better
- 58:03Speaker 5: right now with that. I think they're averaging over five
- 58:06Speaker 5: yards a carry, and everything is sort of springing forth
- 58:10Speaker 5: from that.
- 58:12Speaker 2: On the Tacoma Dodge text line, 49451, Matt, we have
- 58:15Speaker 2: a question from the 253 area code up here in
- 58:18Speaker 2: Washington State asking, what is up with Brendan Ayuk? What's
- 58:22Speaker 2: the situation? Is he just going to disappear? Are they
- 58:25Speaker 2: going to trade him by the November 10th deadline? What's
- 58:28Speaker 2: the latest you think you know on that?
- 58:30Speaker 5: Oh, I think they'd love to trade him. I don't
- 58:33Speaker 5: think that they're going to have any takers at this point.
- 58:35Speaker 5: This is someone who's really kind of destroyed his own career.
- 58:40Speaker 5: You know, Brandon Ayuk is on something called the reserve-less
- 58:45Speaker 5: squad list. So he's not a fish. I guess he's
- 58:50Speaker 5: technically on the team, but he's not an active member
- 58:55Speaker 5: of the team. He's in this state of limbo. And
- 58:59Speaker 5: all he has to do to get off that squad
- 59:01Speaker 5: is to write a letter to the league requesting that
- 59:05Speaker 5: he be removed. And I've been told that it's perfunctory.
- 59:10Speaker 5: I mean, it's basically rubber stamped by the NFL and
- 59:15Speaker 5: doing so would kind of force the 49ers hand. They
- 59:18Speaker 5: couldn't keep him in this limbo anymore if he were
- 59:22Speaker 5: to be reinstated, but he hasn't even done that. He
- 59:26Speaker 5: doesn't have an agent right now. Uh, he doesn't seem
- 59:30Speaker 5: to be, um, you know, all of his, uh, social
- 59:35Speaker 5: media stuff was that I really want to play for
- 59:37Speaker 5: the commanders this year. I'm going to play for the commanders.
- 59:40Speaker 5: I'm going to play with Jaden Daniels, but he hasn't
- 59:42Speaker 5: done anything toward that end. So it makes you wonder,
- 59:45Speaker 5: you know, does he really want to play football? Does
- 59:47Speaker 5: he want to play football this season? I think the
- 59:50Speaker 5: answer to that is no. Um, and then the next
- 59:53Speaker 5: question is, does he want to play football again? because
- 59:58Speaker 5: he's not doing anything to help that cause. In fact,
- 1:00:02Speaker 5: he's doing a lot of things to hurt that. So
- 1:00:06Speaker 5: he's not going to be on the 49ers this year.
- 1:00:08Speaker 5: I think the 49ers would love to trade him. They
- 1:00:11Speaker 5: would take anything for him at this point. And that
- 1:00:14Speaker 5: trade deadline is basically a little bit more than a
- 1:00:17Speaker 5: month away. So hard to see anything changing at this point.
- 1:00:22Speaker 2: He's only 28 years old. Could they even get a
- 1:00:24Speaker 2: conditional seventh-round pick for him? What's the alternative? Do the
- 1:00:28Speaker 2: 49ers just release him, or what are the alternatives they have?
- 1:00:33Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean, they don't have to do anything now.
- 1:00:37Speaker 5: That's the thing. He effectively isn't on the team. He
- 1:00:41Speaker 5: doesn't cost them any money. He doesn't cost them a
- 1:00:44Speaker 5: roster spot. Now, he could push the issue and force
- 1:00:49Speaker 5: them to cut him, make him a free agent so
- 1:00:51Speaker 5: that he can shine with Washington or whoever he wants to,
- 1:00:55Speaker 5: but he hasn't done that. So he's sort of in
- 1:00:59Speaker 5: this self-inflicted limbo stage right now. So he's not getting
- 1:01:06Speaker 5: any advice from anyone, doesn't have an agent. So I
- 1:01:11Speaker 5: just don't know. No one's been able to get a
- 1:01:13Speaker 5: hold of him. close friends, teammates, people like that. So
- 1:01:20Speaker 5: it's a big kind of shoulder shrug from the 49ers.
- 1:01:26Speaker 5: They don't know what's going on with him. They don't
- 1:01:28Speaker 5: love the fact that he's chirping on social media. He's
- 1:01:32Speaker 5: actually stopped doing that over the last month and a half.
- 1:01:36Speaker 5: But it doesn't really matter to them. He's not part
- 1:01:42Speaker 5: of the team anymore.
- 1:01:44Speaker 2: Wow, that's a really, really weird case of a former
- 1:01:47Speaker 2: star player. Matt, appreciate it. I'm going to see you
- 1:01:50Speaker 2: in the press box in Seattle on Sunday, my old
- 1:01:53Speaker 2: Sacramento Bee buddy, back when McClatchy used to have sports sections, unfortunately.
- 1:01:57Speaker 2: But good to talk to you again, man. I appreciate
- 1:01:59Speaker 2: you joining me. I'll see you this weekend. All right.
- 1:02:02Speaker 5: See you soon, Greg.
- 1:02:03Speaker 2: Bye. Matt Barrows, the 49er, a long time, I mean
- 1:02:07Speaker 2: 20-plus years now since he and I were on the
- 1:02:09Speaker 2: Sacramento Bees NFL team together, 20-plus years, 24 years or so,
- 1:02:13Speaker 2: as the beat writer for the 49ers, and now with
- 1:02:16Speaker 2: the Athletic, telling us the Brandeis situation, telling us about
- 1:02:19Speaker 2: Kyle Shanahan. They're running the ball better, he says, and
- 1:02:23Speaker 2: that's the key. They didn't run the ball at all
- 1:02:25Speaker 2: against the Seahawks in the two games at the end
- 1:02:27Speaker 2: of last season.
- 1:02:28Speaker 3: And I'm sure the Seahawks are well aware of that.
- 1:02:30Speaker 2: Yes, they are well aware of that. A lot of
- 1:02:32Speaker 2: Christian McCaffrey coming. You heard him say, Debo Samuel sounds
- 1:02:35Speaker 2: like something of the same situation the Seahawks are trying
- 1:02:39Speaker 2: with their wide receiver. Rashid Shaheed moving him into the
- 1:02:43Speaker 2: backfield because of a dearth of running backs. They just
- 1:02:46Speaker 2: have two, and now they are moving Debo Samuel back
- 1:02:49Speaker 2: in that familiar role. The Seahawks have not had much
- 1:02:51Speaker 2: success defending him against the run over the years. He's
- 1:02:54Speaker 2: back at 30 years old in the second stint. 49ers, 4-0,
- 1:02:58Speaker 2: coming in to play the 3-1 Seahawks for early division
- 1:03:00Speaker 2: lead in the NFC West. It's a 125 national game.
- 1:03:04Speaker 2: The Burkhart-Tom Brady team on Fox is going to be
- 1:03:07Speaker 2: here for the national TV game 425 Eastern 125 in Seattle.
- 1:03:12Speaker 2: Up next, your chance to be a part of the
- 1:03:13Speaker 2: show on your talkbacks, 30 seconds or less on our
- 1:03:16Speaker 2: website or the iHeartRadio app, and at the Comodage text
- 1:03:20Speaker 2: line 49451. We'll also give away $ 1, 000, or at least
- 1:03:24Speaker 2: give you a chance to win $ 1, 000 in a drawing
- 1:03:26Speaker 2: that'll come on Monday. Our latest Fact or Fiction episode
- 1:03:29Speaker 2: is at 1135, thanks to the Lucky Eagle Casino and Hotel.
- 1:03:33Speaker 2: All that's coming up from SEAC headquarters on 93.3 KJRFM.
- 1:03:52Speaker 10: Hey greg hey jess love your guys's show you've really
- 1:03:55Speaker 10: stepped it up greg since you've added jess to the
- 1:03:57Speaker 10: show top notch best show on kgr now my question
- 1:04:01Speaker 10: is though for you guys what is more inspirational to
- 1:04:04Speaker 10: you guys today ian's fight call or dan wilson's after
- 1:04:09Speaker 10: game press conferences it's a tough one for me i
- 1:04:12Speaker 10: think it's a tie.
- 1:04:15Speaker 2: Yeah, understated in a different way. I mean, it was
- 1:04:17Speaker 2: monotony after about 160 of those tough one-to-nights. But Ian
- 1:04:23Speaker 2: was purposely understated because that's how hockey is.
- 1:04:26Speaker 3: But he just knew what was going to happen.
- 1:04:28Speaker 2: Yeah, that was great.
- 1:04:29Speaker 4: Yes.
- 1:04:30Speaker 2: That was really funny. Yeah, thank you. Thank you for
- 1:04:32Speaker 2: the kind words. I don't know if I felt like
- 1:04:34Speaker 2: I was stepping anything up. I'm just trying to be myself.
- 1:04:36Speaker 2: But I appreciate the kind words about the show. Jessamyn
- 1:04:39Speaker 2: makes it better. Makes me better.
- 1:04:40Speaker 3: You know what? I think every day I work with you,
- 1:04:43Speaker 3: I get better as well.
- 1:04:44Speaker 4: Ah, yes.
- 1:04:45Speaker 2: I appreciate that. It's nice to have a pro helping
- 1:04:49Speaker 2: me out, helping a writer do radio.
- 1:04:51Speaker 3: You've always had pros with you.
- 1:04:53Speaker 5: Yes.
- 1:04:54Speaker 4: But I do love working with Greg, and I worked
- 1:04:57Speaker 4: with Greg before I even worked here.
- 1:04:59Speaker 2: That's right. You tell the story all the time. We
- 1:05:02Speaker 2: were at the Army-Navy game together. You weren't even a
- 1:05:04Speaker 2: KJR employee yet.
- 1:05:05Speaker 3: No, I was a lucky fill-in, and I was very excited.
- 1:05:09Speaker 2: Was that the one in Philadelphia or in Washington?
- 1:05:12Speaker 3: That was Philly.
- 1:05:13Speaker 2: Philly.
- 1:05:14Speaker 3: That was Philly because my parents drove up.
- 1:05:16Speaker 2: Oh, that's right.
- 1:05:16Speaker 3: They drove down.
- 1:05:17Speaker 2: That's right.
- 1:05:18Speaker 4: My directionality on the East Coast has been wonked since
- 1:05:20Speaker 4: I've lived in Seattle.
- 1:05:22Speaker 2: Jessamyn and I will be back at the Army-Navy game
- 1:05:24Speaker 2: on December the 10th, broadcasting live from Times Square because
- 1:05:28Speaker 2: the Army-Navy game is in New York. It's in the
- 1:05:30Speaker 2: Meadowlands right outside New York in Manhattan.
- 1:05:32Speaker 3: But we will be in Manhattan.
- 1:05:33Speaker 2: But we will be in Manhattan in Times Square on
- 1:05:35Speaker 2: December the 11th. Pardon me, Friday, December the 11th. The
- 1:05:39Speaker 2: game is on December the 12th. I've said it before,
- 1:05:43Speaker 2: if you've never been to an Army-Navy game, you're missing out.
- 1:05:44Speaker 2: It is a bucket list. And I'm biased, of course.
- 1:05:47Speaker 2: I graduated from West Point.
- 1:05:48Speaker 3: No, but okay, I'm not. No, she's not.
- 1:05:52Speaker 4: And I think that previous people who worked here had
- 1:05:54Speaker 4: worked that show and not gone to the game. And
- 1:05:58Speaker 4: you told me how amazing it was, and I went early.
- 1:06:01Speaker 4: And it's always very cold at these games. Went so early,
- 1:06:06Speaker 4: saw the march on, saw everything. And I was just
- 1:06:09Speaker 4: struck because I grew up in college football. I had
- 1:06:12Speaker 4: been going to college football games since before I can walk.
- 1:06:16Speaker 4: And I was so struck and taken back by everything
- 1:06:22Speaker 4: and the meaning of it. And also just having so
- 1:06:26Speaker 4: much gratitude for the service members who were there.
- 1:06:29Speaker 3: A lot of them playing their last game.
- 1:06:31Speaker 2: Yep, exactly.
- 1:06:32Speaker 4: And then everyone who is treating it with such respect.
- 1:06:38Speaker 4: And it's bucket list, yes. And this will be my
- 1:06:43Speaker 4: fifth one.
- 1:06:44Speaker 2: Fifth one, that's great. It'll be my, man, 15th.
- 1:06:48Speaker 3: You've got a lot on me.
- 1:06:49Speaker 2: Well, I went there and went every year. If those
- 1:06:52Speaker 2: don't know, the entire Corps of Cadets and the entire
- 1:06:54Speaker 2: Brigade of Midshipmen go to the game, whether you're on restrictions,
- 1:06:57Speaker 2: whether you're on academic probate, whatever. You still get to go.
- 1:07:00Speaker 2: If you're in trouble, you go. It's kind of a boomerang.
- 1:07:03Speaker 2: You go on a bus down the morning of the game, parade,
- 1:07:06Speaker 2: march around, go to the game, and then go right
- 1:07:07Speaker 2: back on the bus and don't get to celebrate and
- 1:07:10Speaker 2: visit family and friends after the game. But it's an event.
- 1:07:12Speaker 2: It's a holiday event for the Corps of Cadets and
- 1:07:15Speaker 2: the Brigade of Navy Midshipmen in Annapolis. That's Army-Navy. We'll
- 1:07:19Speaker 2: be there. And I'm just blessed to do it. on
- 1:07:22Speaker 2: December the 11th from Times Square. 49451 on the Tacoma
- 1:07:26Speaker 2: Dots text line. 206 says, maybe Ayuk and Mixon were
- 1:07:29Speaker 2: in the same alternate dimension together. That's the mystery surrounding
- 1:07:33Speaker 2: both the past year. Yeah, the mystery of Joe Mixon's
- 1:07:36Speaker 2: foot injury, how it happened, why he didn't play at
- 1:07:39Speaker 2: all for Houston last year, why he's still not in
- 1:07:41Speaker 2: the league and unsigned, why he apparently failed his physical.
- 1:07:45Speaker 2: I have a.
- 1:07:45Speaker 4: Feeling that something happened that he doesn't want anyone to
- 1:07:48Speaker 4: know about.
- 1:07:49Speaker 2: That's the rumor. There are rumors in Houston.
- 1:07:51Speaker 3: There are rumors, and I don't like to entertain them
- 1:07:53Speaker 3: all the time. That's right.
- 1:07:55Speaker 2: You can look it up if you want to know.
- 1:07:56Speaker 2: I'm not going to perpetrate those, but yes, for sure.
- 1:08:00Speaker 4: But with that being undisclosed by anyone, especially how highly
- 1:08:06Speaker 4: it's been talked about, it seems that. Something happened that
- 1:08:10Speaker 4: he doesn't want anyone to know about.
- 1:08:12Speaker 2: I agree. I think the same. 425 says, what concerns
- 1:08:15Speaker 2: me most about the Seahawks is Debo Samuel's return. He
- 1:08:17Speaker 2: has killed us in the past. Turnovers and penalties will
- 1:08:20Speaker 2: also set us back. Go Hawks. You're right about Debo Samuel.
- 1:08:24Speaker 2: He has hurt them in a multitude of ways. And
- 1:08:27Speaker 2: you heard Matt Barrow's last segment saying, yep, they've got
- 1:08:29Speaker 2: him in the backfield. And they've got him running because
- 1:08:32Speaker 2: he's really their third running back right now. Marcus, our
- 1:08:35Speaker 2: buddy in 206, friend of the station, very worried about
- 1:08:37Speaker 2: the Niners. The last two weeks, we beat two teams
- 1:08:40Speaker 2: in the league, the Chargers, who we got lucky to play,
- 1:08:43Speaker 2: and the Dolphins. Well, the Dolphins, they didn't play the
- 1:08:47Speaker 2: Dolphins yet, but I get the point. It's... What else? Oh,
- 1:08:55Speaker 2: about Hugh Millen. 3-6-0. Millen needs to do one at the... EQC,
- 1:09:00Speaker 2: Lucky Eagle or Little Creek. Explain to the wife why
- 1:09:03Speaker 2: I'm driving from Olympia to Tulalip to be coached by
- 1:09:06Speaker 2: Hugh at 50 years old is a tough sell. The
- 1:09:10Speaker 2: look on her face. I'm like, I get it. That's funny.
- 1:09:16Speaker 2: That's pretty funny. Yeah, that would be a tough sell.
- 1:09:18Speaker 2: I'll let you throw that up to your wife.
- 1:09:20Speaker 3: That is quite the drive, yes. Well, take her out
- 1:09:24Speaker 3: to dinner on the way.
- 1:09:25Speaker 2: Exactly.
- 1:09:26Speaker 3: Yeah, bring her up there.
- 1:09:28Speaker 4: And I think Hugh actually is, you know, just non-denominational
- 1:09:33Speaker 4: football expert where he just explains it. It doesn't matter
- 1:09:36Speaker 4: your gender or what you're a fan of. Hugh is
- 1:09:39Speaker 4: fantastic at talking about football.
- 1:09:42Speaker 2: That's funny. I could see a wife going, you're doing what?
- 1:09:46Speaker 2: You're going where? All right, take her up.
- 1:09:48Speaker 3: Come on.
- 1:09:48Speaker 4: Just say, you know, I'm pretty sure that Tulalip has
- 1:09:51Speaker 4: some really good restaurants, too.
- 1:09:53Speaker 9: Yeah, exactly.
- 1:09:54Speaker 2: Yeah, take her up. And not to mention, you'd be
- 1:09:55Speaker 2: driving right through Seattle. There's a few places to eat
- 1:09:57Speaker 2: in Seattle, as well.
- 1:09:58Speaker 3: You can also do that.
- 1:09:59Speaker 5: Yeah. Bring her with.
- 1:10:01Speaker 2: Hey, you want to win $ 1, 000? We've got a chance
- 1:10:03Speaker 2: right now. Factor Fiction is right now.
- 1:10:06Speaker 1: It's your shot at our weekly $ 1, 000 and the $ 10, 000
- 1:10:11Speaker 1: grand prize.
- 1:10:12Speaker 5: It's Factor Fiction.
- 1:10:14Speaker 1: Proudly presented by Lucky Eagle Casino and Hotel, where every
- 1:10:18Speaker 1: day feels lucky.
- 1:10:19Speaker 2: Factor Fiction is on. Sports Radio 93.3, KJR FM. Yep,
- 1:10:29Speaker 2: I'm sticking in the NFL. Usually I'm a college football guy,
- 1:10:32Speaker 2: but I'm going to go NFL.
- 1:10:34Speaker 3: I like it.
- 1:10:35Speaker 2: Because there's something that's just sticking out to me. The
- 1:10:37Speaker 2: Lions are playing at the 1-3 Cardinals. We've lost three straight.
- 1:10:43Speaker 2: Coach Dan Campbell has to be kicking his Lions in
- 1:10:46Speaker 2: the asses this week. They're 2-2 after giving up 445
- 1:10:50Speaker 2: yards to Carolina, and they blew a second-half lead at
- 1:10:53Speaker 2: the Panthers Sunday night. The Lions are 2-2. I see
- 1:10:56Speaker 2: them as a better team than that. I saw the
- 1:10:58Speaker 2: Cardinals in person in Week 2, and I'm still trying
- 1:11:00Speaker 2: to figure out how they then went on to score
- 1:11:01Speaker 2: 30 points against the 49ers in a 36-30 loss. Yeah.
- 1:11:06Speaker 2: That offense. They had Trey McBride, and that's about it.
- 1:11:09Speaker 2: They've lost three straight, as I said, since they beat
- 1:11:11Speaker 2: the Chargers to begin the season, and that win against
- 1:11:13Speaker 2: the Chargers doesn't look as impressive as it did in
- 1:11:16Speaker 2: Week 1. The Lions are favored by 5.5 at Arizona.
- 1:11:22Speaker 2: I think the Lions win by two scores at least.
- 1:11:25Speaker 2: Demi Lions, minus 5.5 at Arizona. If you agree, text
- 1:11:29Speaker 2: FACT to 49451. If you disagree, text FICTION to 49451.
- 1:11:32Speaker 2: In other words, if you want to win $ 1, 000, text
- 1:11:36Speaker 2: FACT to 49451. Lions minus 5.5 at the Cardinals. I
- 1:11:41Speaker 2: see this as a boat race.
- 1:11:43Speaker 3: You and Ashley are going head-to-head on this one.
- 1:11:46Speaker 2: I didn't even look. I did this blind.
- 1:11:47Speaker 4: Okay, well, I'm glad that you didn't take her pick.
- 1:11:50Speaker 2: So she's taking the Cardinals.
- 1:11:52Speaker 3: She took the Cardinals, but she got them at four
- 1:11:55Speaker 3: and a half.
- 1:11:56Speaker 4: So the spread does change from day to day, so
- 1:11:59Speaker 4: people understand.
- 1:12:01Speaker 3: So, yes, you are taking Detroit. Yeah, so you and Ashley.
- 1:12:06Speaker 2: We can increase our lead over their show.
- 1:12:09Speaker 3: There we go. A little fantasy football challenge-ish.
- 1:12:13Speaker 2: Yeah, you got 11 minutes to text in fact or
- 1:12:16Speaker 2: fiction to my pick, Lions minus five and a half
- 1:12:19Speaker 2: at Arizona. If you agree, text fact to 49451. Disagree,
- 1:12:23Speaker 2: text fiction to 49451. 11 more minutes. How it works,
- 1:12:27Speaker 2: you get 12 minutes, and then we have to wait
- 1:12:29Speaker 2: again until 2.35 when Ian Furness will have his pick,
- 1:12:32Speaker 2: or it might be Ashley. I guess Ashley just did it.
- 1:12:34Speaker 2: Probably going to be Ian today. And he'll have his
- 1:12:37Speaker 2: pick at 2.35. Then Dave Softy-Mahler and the Dave and
- 1:12:40Speaker 2: Dick Fane's, Show will be at 335, your next chance.
- 1:12:43Speaker 2: 735 is when Chuck Powell does it. We do it
- 1:12:45Speaker 2: every day. Whoever wins the most between now and Army-Navy Friday,
- 1:12:49Speaker 2: December 11th, when the contest ends, will win $ 10, 000. So
- 1:12:54Speaker 2: even if you are not drawn as a weekly winner,
- 1:12:57Speaker 2: you don't have to win once each week to get
- 1:12:59Speaker 2: in the hat. You're in. You're not drawn.
- 1:13:01Speaker 3: But the more you play, the better your chances.
- 1:13:05Speaker 2: That's right. Just as gambling should be, right?
- 1:13:09Speaker 3: Yeah, well, that's how they get you.
- 1:13:11Speaker 2: Exactly. So back to the text line, 49451. 253, we've
- 1:13:17Speaker 2: talked about this in the past, but the 253 wants
- 1:13:19Speaker 2: to bring the Army-Navy game to Seattle. Either stadium, meaning
- 1:13:23Speaker 2: Husky Stadium or downtown. We do have a strong military presence. Yes,
- 1:13:27Speaker 2: we do. We have a huge military presence here, including
- 1:13:30Speaker 2: with the Air Force and JBLM and McCord, Bremerton, Kitsap,
- 1:13:35Speaker 2: the Navy presence out on the peninsula. Fort Lewis, where
- 1:13:38Speaker 2: I was stationed, now called Joint Base Lewis-McChord with the
- 1:13:41Speaker 2: Army presence there. Fort Lewis is much bigger than it
- 1:13:43Speaker 2: was when I was stationed there as a lieutenant and
- 1:13:45Speaker 2: a captain. I've asked, Jess, when you've heard me ask
- 1:13:49Speaker 2: the Army-Navy people when we go back to the games
- 1:13:51Speaker 2: about bringing the game to Seattle, and they say we're
- 1:13:54Speaker 2: constantly looking at it. The contract currently, as I understand it,
- 1:13:57Speaker 2: to be three out of every four years it's in Philadelphia.
- 1:14:00Speaker 2: They've mixed that up the last few years. They've had
- 1:14:02Speaker 2: it in D.C. They've had it in Baltimore. They've had
- 1:14:05Speaker 2: it outside Boston and Foxborough. I would not recommend because
- 1:14:09Speaker 2: of the stadium. Boston was great.
- 1:14:11Speaker 3: Oh, but the stadium, though, that experience was unbelievable.
- 1:14:15Speaker 2: Oh, no, no. In the stadium, yeah. Getting to the stadium.
- 1:14:17Speaker 3: It's just hard to get to.
- 1:14:19Speaker 2: You and I had a great time inside the stadium.
- 1:14:21Speaker 3: Oh, my goodness.
- 1:14:22Speaker 2: That was the best. We were in a suite that
- 1:14:27Speaker 2: was on the field in the corner of the end zone.
- 1:14:29Speaker 3: Bill Belichick was in our suite.
- 1:14:31Speaker 2: Yeah, that was good.
- 1:14:33Speaker 3: That was amazing.
- 1:14:35Speaker 2: You're right about that. I won't argue with that.
- 1:14:36Speaker 3: It is hard to get to, and so are the Meadowlands.
- 1:14:40Speaker 2: I've been told the Meadowlands. Bad memories of the Meadowlands.
- 1:14:45Speaker 2: But I have been told that the Army-Navy game, they've
- 1:14:47Speaker 2: considered it for Seattle, but there is a prohibitive cost
- 1:14:51Speaker 2: for the Department of Defense these days in some austere
- 1:14:55Speaker 2: days in some regards. I know we spend a ton
- 1:14:57Speaker 2: and billions of dollars and trillions of dollars on our
- 1:14:59Speaker 2: Defense Department, but to send the entire Corps of Cadets,
- 1:15:02Speaker 2: the entire Brigade of Midshipmen to Seattle... During final exam period,
- 1:15:07Speaker 2: that's usually like the week of final exams after the
- 1:15:10Speaker 2: Army-Navy game. That's the one drawback is you've got finals
- 1:15:13Speaker 2: staring at you on Saturday.
- 1:15:14Speaker 4: Because of all the college institutions in the world, they
- 1:15:18Speaker 4: actually care.
- 1:15:19Speaker 3: About the students.
- 1:15:20Speaker 2: Let me tell you something about final exams at West Point.
- 1:15:22Speaker 2: They last four hours. And we have them on Saturdays.
- 1:15:26Speaker 2: We have them on Fridays. It's a grind. So... They
- 1:15:31Speaker 2: are reluctant to move the Corps and the brigade out
- 1:15:33Speaker 2: there forth to Seattle right on the heels. And this
- 1:15:37Speaker 2: is when the game is still in December. There's been
- 1:15:39Speaker 2: talk they're going to move the game around because of
- 1:15:41Speaker 2: expanded college football playoffs, blah, blah, blah. When I was
- 1:15:45Speaker 2: a kid, I think it was 1982, it was in
- 1:15:48Speaker 2: the early 80s, the Army-Navy game was at the Rose Bowl,
- 1:15:51Speaker 2: if you can imagine that. The only time it's really
- 1:15:54Speaker 2: been west of the Hudson River, if you count The Meadowlands,
- 1:15:59Speaker 2: I guess, is west of the Hudson River by a
- 1:16:00Speaker 2: couple of miles. But west of suburban New Jersey was
- 1:16:04Speaker 2: in the early 80s. It went to the Rose Bowl.
- 1:16:06Speaker 2: And you talk about the cadets and the midshipmen loving that.
- 1:16:09Speaker 2: Going to Southern California in December. That's the only time
- 1:16:14Speaker 2: it's been there. There were rumors when I was a
- 1:16:16Speaker 2: cadet on the 50th anniversary of Pearl Harbor that there
- 1:16:19Speaker 2: would be, in 1991, that there would be a game
- 1:16:22Speaker 2: at Aloha Stadium in Honolulu. But, of course, that didn't happen.
- 1:16:25Speaker 2: We got the Meadowlands and a windstorm instead. Anyway, Ian
- 1:16:29Speaker 2: Furness will join us next. Tell us what's on his show.
- 1:16:31Speaker 2: You've got about eight minutes left. Text Factor Fiction to
- 1:16:34Speaker 2: my pick. Lions minus five and a half at Arizona.
- 1:16:37Speaker 2: If you agree, text Factor 49451. If you don't want
- 1:16:40Speaker 2: to win $ 1, 000, text Fiction to 49451. Ian's up next.
- 1:16:43Speaker 2: Tell us what he's got on his show on 93.3 KJRFM. Well,
- 1:16:57Speaker 2: we're back.
- 1:16:59Speaker 9: Greg's plugging in right now.
- 1:17:01Speaker 3: Where are we?
- 1:17:02Speaker 9: Well, listen, newspaper guy still learning this radio business.
- 1:17:05Speaker 5: Yes.
- 1:17:05Speaker 9: He's actually, I will say this. I'm going to give
- 1:17:07Speaker 9: this guy credit, man.
- 1:17:08Speaker 2: Let's go.
- 1:17:09Speaker 8: There's a lot of people that, you know, because in
- 1:17:11Speaker 8: the world we live in now, if you're not doing multimedia,
- 1:17:14Speaker 8: you're probably not doing well.
- 1:17:16Speaker 9: I'll turn you up even.
- 1:17:17Speaker 2: How's that? Yeah, man. Hook me up. There you go.
- 1:17:19Speaker 9: If you're not doing more than one medium or job.
- 1:17:26Speaker 2: And you're good.
- 1:17:26Speaker 8: A lot of people come in and try to do radio,
- 1:17:28Speaker 8: and they're like, I don't know. You just turn the
- 1:17:29Speaker 8: switch off. It's really not that hard. If I can
- 1:17:32Speaker 8: figure it out, anybody.
- 1:17:33Speaker 2: Can figure it out. That's about the only thing I
- 1:17:35Speaker 2: get right.
- 1:17:35Speaker 9: But you know what? You and I weren't able to
- 1:17:37Speaker 9: do it, buddy.
- 1:17:37Speaker 2: That's right.
- 1:17:38Speaker 9: I'll let you take over as your show.
- 1:17:40Speaker 2: No, that's right.
- 1:17:41Speaker 9: Now that you're plugged in.
- 1:17:43Speaker 2: So I was about to crack a game. I was like,
- 1:17:45Speaker 2: we played your call of the fight. Just made him,
- 1:17:49Speaker 2: Justin and I, crack up.
- 1:17:50Speaker 3: Just so good. Yeah, this is happening.
- 1:17:52Speaker 2: Tell people. Tell people why that is just so commonplace,
- 1:17:56Speaker 2: why you knew Montour was going to fight, and why
- 1:17:59Speaker 2: you were so deadpan about it because of your Western
- 1:18:01Speaker 2: Hockey League experience.
- 1:18:02Speaker 9: Because it was nothing compared to what I saw on
- 1:18:04Speaker 9: the tub.
- 1:18:06Speaker 2: Right. But you said that you had a close-up when
- 1:18:09Speaker 2: you saw on the monitor of Montour gesturing to.
- 1:18:14Speaker 9: Yeah, well, I mean, things were getting a little sketchy.
- 1:18:15Speaker 8: I mean, you know, the bottom line is he lost 6-2,
- 1:18:20Speaker 8: but there was a lot of emotion in that game. And.
- 1:18:23Speaker 8: You can see the physicality pick up as the game
- 1:18:25Speaker 8: went on. I mean, it started 17 seconds in. Bowman hit,
- 1:18:30Speaker 8: or Gatcombe hit Lindgren, knocked him out of the game.
- 1:18:33Speaker 9: He's hurt.
- 1:18:34Speaker 8: We don't know, but he's probably out for a little while.
- 1:18:36Speaker 8: So it's like, hey, Vegas, it's not just you that got.
- 1:18:38Speaker 9: A guy hurt.
- 1:18:39Speaker 8: Olsen's a really good player, and the hit was a
- 1:18:42Speaker 8: bad hit, like a really bad hit. And then there
- 1:18:44Speaker 8: were a couple other ones. But that was, yeah, they're
- 1:18:47Speaker 8: looking for retribution, and it's what Lane's wanted all along
- 1:18:50Speaker 8: from his team is for someone to step up. And,
- 1:18:52Speaker 8: you know, it's not so much retaliate or eye for
- 1:18:54Speaker 8: an eye, but it's like, hey, you've got to stick
- 1:18:56Speaker 8: up for your teammates. You know, Stone's over there, and
- 1:18:59Speaker 8: it's a five-on-three, and they're talking, they're chirping, and away
- 1:19:05Speaker 8: they go.
- 1:19:06Speaker 9: And actually, it was 5-on-4. I forget what it was
- 1:19:07Speaker 9: because they ended up having too many guys on the ice.
- 1:19:09Speaker 2: Vegas did.
- 1:19:09Speaker 9: They'll probably get fined for that because somebody came on
- 1:19:12Speaker 9: the ice.
- 1:19:12Speaker 2: No. Why would they get fined for that?
- 1:19:15Speaker 8: Actually, it was a later hit. It was a later
- 1:19:17Speaker 8: hit because they had somebody coming off the bench during
- 1:19:20Speaker 8: an altercation.
- 1:19:21Speaker 2: Oh, right, right. It was bad.
- 1:19:22Speaker 9: But yeah, I mean, I saw him. He's like, Monty's
- 1:19:24Speaker 9: talking to him. Monty's a talker.
- 1:19:25Speaker 8: And he's like kind of shaking his glove.
- 1:19:28Speaker 9: And he's like, you want to do it? We'll do it.
- 1:19:29Speaker 2: Let's go. And they did. And he knew it.
- 1:19:33Speaker 9: Monty knew that someone had to do it.
- 1:19:35Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 1:19:35Speaker 9: And Stone knew that as a captain he had to
- 1:19:37Speaker 9: do something.
- 1:19:38Speaker 2: So that's the Krakens players trying to show their coach
- 1:19:40Speaker 2: they're tuned in to him.
- 1:19:42Speaker 8: Yeah, it goes back to the preseason. I mean, Odovinen,
- 1:19:47Speaker 8: he got in a scrap. Against Calgary, wasn't it? Yeah,
- 1:19:51Speaker 8: kind of jumped a guy. But the guy had hit
- 1:19:52Speaker 8: him up high the game before, knocked him out of
- 1:19:54Speaker 8: the game. Did it again, and he went after him
- 1:19:56Speaker 8: and other stuff. Seattle has been too easy to play
- 1:20:00Speaker 8: against in their first five years. And that is something
- 1:20:04Speaker 8: Lane Lambert wanted to change last year. And he slowly
- 1:20:07Speaker 8: started to get it. And I would just say the
- 1:20:09Speaker 8: only good thing that came out of last night was
- 1:20:11Speaker 8: that whether it was that, you know, the Winterton hit
- 1:20:14Speaker 8: was a good hit and they didn't like it either.
- 1:20:15Speaker 8: And he had to go, he had to answer the
- 1:20:16Speaker 8: bell and that's fine. Um, you know, the other scuffle
- 1:20:19Speaker 8: in front of the bench. I mean, there's a lot
- 1:20:20Speaker 8: of stuff that happened. This is a team that in
- 1:20:23Speaker 8: past years may have just kind of shied away from that. Uh,
- 1:20:26Speaker 8: when other teams challenge them physically in your face. And again,
- 1:20:29Speaker 8: it doesn't have to be dropping the mitts. Sometimes you're
- 1:20:31Speaker 8: just in the guy's face and, and, uh, It was
- 1:20:33Speaker 8: a poor performance, maybe one of the worst games that
- 1:20:35Speaker 8: team's played in a long time. But Shane Wright getting
- 1:20:39Speaker 8: a goal and then them standing up for themselves was
- 1:20:41Speaker 8: a positive. And like you said, it changed on one play.
- 1:20:43Speaker 8: I mean, a shattered stick on a power play, you
- 1:20:45Speaker 8: score there, but he's walking in. He scores there, it's 2-1,
- 1:20:48Speaker 8: and you're like, okay, here we go. And instead, it's
- 1:20:50Speaker 8: a 2-1, none the other way.
- 1:20:51Speaker 2: Exactly, with no stick. So tell me the biggest challenge
- 1:20:56Speaker 2: or maybe the biggest plus of calling hockey on television
- 1:21:01Speaker 2: versus radio.
- 1:21:04Speaker 8: Radio, whether it's football, hockey, baseball, I think to a
- 1:21:09Speaker 8: certain extent, certainly basketball, it's where is the play, what
- 1:21:15Speaker 8: side are you on, are we going right to left?
- 1:21:17Speaker 8: Like if I did the Seahawks-Cowboy preseason game, and in football, honestly, Jess,
- 1:21:22Speaker 8: how many times have I told you to tell people this? Down, distance,
- 1:21:27Speaker 8: where the ball is, who's 45-yard line, are you going
- 1:21:31Speaker 8: right to left? single receiver to the right, like painting
- 1:21:35Speaker 8: the picture. Um, it doesn't even matter if you say
- 1:21:39Speaker 8: who catches the ball, just, you know, that ball is
- 1:21:40Speaker 8: complete on the outside for a first down to the
- 1:21:43Speaker 8: 35 of San Francisco. Like just saying that hockey down
- 1:21:46Speaker 8: the near side boards, down the left wing on the
- 1:21:49Speaker 8: near side. So now you're going left or you can
- 1:21:50Speaker 8: paint the picture. So then the listener can put it
- 1:21:53Speaker 8: in TV and TV. It's less words, more of the analyst.
- 1:21:56Speaker 8: Like I JT's phenomenal. I I've, I'll look at him.
- 1:22:01Speaker 8: He's really easy to work with. I mean, we've worked
- 1:22:03Speaker 8: together like six times now total, but I can look
- 1:22:05Speaker 8: at him and I know exactly when he's going to talk.
- 1:22:07Speaker 8: I can see when he's talking to the producer and
- 1:22:09Speaker 8: wants a highlight, so I'll just keep going. So yeah,
- 1:22:10Speaker 8: it's just finding that rhythm.
- 1:22:12Speaker 9: I'll tell you this. I felt like I felt like
- 1:22:15Speaker 9: it was a rough game for Ian last night.
- 1:22:17Speaker 8: First one I did in a long time.
- 1:22:20Speaker 9: It was not like riding a bike. It took a
- 1:22:21Speaker 9: little while.
- 1:22:22Speaker 2: You sounded awesome.
- 1:22:23Speaker 9: I appreciate that.
- 1:22:24Speaker 2: You're welcome.
- 1:22:24Speaker 9: And now we're going to do sports radio today. I've
- 1:22:25Speaker 9: got to talk to you guys. What the hell is
- 1:22:26Speaker 9: going on out here?
- 1:22:27Speaker 2: I'll fill you in in the break. I'll fill you in.
- 1:22:30Speaker 2: Are they giving you a play today? Who are you
- 1:22:32Speaker 2: talking to?
- 1:22:32Speaker 9: Derek Hall. Oh, you can ask him why he hit.
- 1:22:35Speaker 2: The quarterback on third and 24 at a two-yard pass.
- 1:22:38Speaker 2: We'll see if I get to that. Yeah.
- 1:22:40Speaker 9: With him sitting across from me, I'll wait and see.
- 1:22:42Speaker 2: Yeah, probably not.
- 1:22:43Speaker 9: I'll ask him about playing to the edge. How's that?
- 1:22:45Speaker 9: There's a way to do that.
- 1:22:46Speaker 2: You could ask about the penalties in general.
- 1:22:48Speaker 9: Oh, that's what we'll do. That's what we'll do. So, yeah,
- 1:22:50Speaker 9: all that coming up.
- 1:22:51Speaker 2: That's probably, what, 1220? 12, 5, 10, 20, whatever.
- 1:22:54Speaker 9: I don't know.
- 1:22:56Speaker 2: We'll see.
- 1:22:57Speaker 9: You never know with these guys.
- 1:22:58Speaker 2: I'm off to go hear Mike McDonald talk about his
- 1:23:00Speaker 2: recent acquisitions at running back and why Joe Mixon isn't here.
- 1:23:03Speaker 2: Maybe we can get an official word on that.
- 1:23:05Speaker 8: Jessamyn's going to rule on that, and then you'll come
- 1:23:06Speaker 8: in and tell me about what's going on around 1245,
- 1:23:08Speaker 8: I hope.
- 1:23:09Speaker 2: Exactly. We'll do that. Okay, perfect. Ian's up next.
- 1:23:12Speaker 9: You've got 45 minutes off.
- 1:23:13Speaker 2: Thanks. You have a factor fiction pick from Ian at 235.
- 1:23:17Speaker 2: All that's coming up. Thanks for listening. Greg Bell, Jessamyn McIntyre.
- 1:23:20Speaker 2: We'll do it again tomorrow at 10 noon on 93.3 KJRFM.
