- 0:00Hey friends, welcome back to the podcast.
- 0:03If you're new here, my name is Friendly.
- 0:06I'm so happy that y'all are tuning in this morning.
- 0:09Today we're going to be moving into a new chapter in Matthew,
- 0:13Matthew chapter 24, and we're going to see Jesus preparing his
- 0:18disciples for what's to come. This is not just for His
- 0:21crucifixion and resurrection, but the persecution and the
- 0:26endurance that is required until He comes back again.
- 0:30We see Him teaching on the Mount of Olives and honestly, there is
- 0:34so much richness here that I'm going to break this chapter up
- 0:37over multiple episodes because these are not just surface level
- 0:41teachings. They are meant to shape how we
- 0:44live in this very day. So my prayer for this episode is
- 0:49that it would stir a greater urgency in believers, a desire
- 0:53in those possibly still seeking, and ultimately a healthy fear of
- 0:58God. Not one that produces anxiety,
- 1:01but a reverence in awe that results in faithfulness.
- 1:06So we are going to start in verse one and go through verse
- 1:1025. I'm going to skip a few verses
- 1:14in the middle just for the sake of time, but let's begin in
- 1:17verse one. Jesus left the temple and was
- 1:21walking away when His disciples came up to Him to call His
- 1:24attention to its buildings. Do you see all these things?
- 1:28He asked, Truly I tell you, not one stone here will be left on
- 1:33another. Everyone will be thrown down.
- 1:37As Jesus was sitting on the Mount of Olives, the disciples
- 1:41came to him privately. Tell us, they said, when will
- 1:45this happen and what will be the sign of your coming and of the
- 1:49end of the age? Jesus answered, Watch out that
- 1:54no one deceives you, for many will come in my name claiming I
- 1:58am the Messiah, and they will deceive many.
- 2:03You will hear of wars and rumors of wars, but see to it that you
- 2:07are not alarmed. Such things must happen, but the
- 2:12end is still to come. Nation will rise against nation
- 2:16and Kingdom against Kingdom. There will be famines and
- 2:19earthquakes in various places. All these are the beginning of
- 2:24birth pains. Then you will be handed over to
- 2:28be persecuted and put to death, and you will be hated by all
- 2:32nations because of Me. At that time many will turn away
- 2:37from the faith and will betray and hate each other, and many
- 2:41false prophets will appear and deceive many people Because of
- 2:46the increase of wickedness. The love of most will grow cold,
- 2:51but the one who stands firm to the end will be saved, and this
- 2:57gospel of the Kingdom will be preached in the whole world as a
- 3:01testimony to all nations, and then the end will come.
- 3:06Skip down to verse 22. If those days had not been cut
- 3:10short, no one would survive. But for the sake of the elect,
- 3:15those days will be shortened. At that time, if anyone says to
- 3:19you, look here's the Messiah or there he is, do not believe it.
- 3:25For false messiahs and false prophets will appear and perform
- 3:29great signs and wonders to deceive if possible, even the
- 3:34elect. See I have told you ahead of
- 3:37time, OK, that is a big chunk. But before we unpack it, context
- 3:46really does matter. So Jesus is on the Mount of
- 3:49Olives. As we see, this overlooks the
- 3:51city of Jerusalem. I was actually there this past
- 3:54August, and it's honestly hard to put into words because you
- 3:59are elevated. You're looking out over
- 4:02Jerusalem, You can see everything that's been built,
- 4:05established, and you're just admiring it all.
- 4:08Now, this location is significant.
- 4:11Zechariah the prophet predicts that the Messiah would stand
- 4:15here to establish his Kingdom years prior.
- 4:18So it does make sense that the disciples are here asking Jesus
- 4:23these questions while staring at the temple and the city that
- 4:26they know so well. So the temple itself as I can
- 4:31imagine. Obviously I haven't seen it in
- 4:33its glory days, but it was breathtaking.
- 4:36Solomon originally built it with massive columns, porches, and
- 4:41courts, and King Herod later remodeled it into something that
- 4:45was admired throughout all the ancient world.
- 4:48It was central to Jewish identity and worship.
- 4:52So when Jesus says that not one stone will be left on another,
- 4:56the disciples are struggling to even comprehend this.
- 5:00But 40 years after this, it was actually destroyed.
- 5:05So I do think it's interesting to to analyze how the disciples
- 5:09are so eager to know the timing and the details because this is
- 5:15exactly how we are to this day. We like to ask questions like
- 5:20who will I marry or what will my family look like?
- 5:23Maybe where will I be in 10 years or what is the next step.
- 5:28Humans do not like feeling unaware or out of control.
- 5:32And when we spiral too much into the future, it can produce
- 5:36worry. But here's the honest question
- 5:40that I think it's good to ask ourselves.
- 5:43If you're a believer in Jesus, why do we need to know every
- 5:47detail if our faith is built on trust?
- 5:51We believe in a God that we cannot physically see, but we
- 5:56know Him personally through a relationship.
- 5:59He created us, He has sustained us, and He cared for us before
- 6:04we were ever even made aware of what our needs were.
- 6:08Think about being a helpless baby.
- 6:11Yet He was already faithful, and He called us to Himself in His
- 6:16timing, not ours. It was whenever He appointed
- 6:20that time to give us a revelation of His grace.
- 6:25So if that's true, why would we suddenly need signs or timelines
- 6:30and control right now? Jesus is showing us here that
- 6:34getting caught in the weeds of details can actually distract us
- 6:39from our purpose. And think about it, if you are
- 6:43truly living every single day for God with consistency, with
- 6:48humility and faith, and you're seeking to be set apart, like
- 6:52First Timothy 412 says in your speech, conduct faith, love, and
- 6:57purity, then when or how Jesus returns becomes less about fear
- 7:03and the anticipation and more about the motivation.
- 7:08We see Jesus repeatedly in this passage saying to be careful
- 7:13about deception and The thing is that when we obsess over signs
- 7:19and timelines or even conspiracy theories in others opinions, our
- 7:23focus shifts off of Jesus and that is distraction.
- 7:29With that distraction it makes us more vulnerable to deception.
- 7:34And y'all, deception is Satan's primary language.
- 7:38This is His strength. Jesus calls him the Father of
- 7:42lies in John 844. We have seen his strategy since
- 7:46the Garden of Eden. We've seen His true colors.
- 7:50He did not remove God from Adam and Eve's lives.
- 7:53He couldn't do that. But what He could do is redirect
- 7:57their attention away from Him. Now Scripture also tells us,
- 8:02Ephesians 612, that our battle is not against flesh and blood,
- 8:07It's not against one another. It's against spiritual forces of
- 8:11darkness. Our enemy wants believers to
- 8:15think that our other enemy is each other, because division
- 8:20blinds us from the real fight and it slows us down from
- 8:24running the race that God has given us.
- 8:27So that's why false teachers are so dangerous.
- 8:31We might hear messages like follow your heart or God just
- 8:35wants you happy. It's OK to stay in sin.
- 8:38God understands or his grace is sufficient.
- 8:41See his grace is sufficient, but it's not meant to be taken
- 8:45advantage of. Or you might hear if you have
- 8:48enough enough faith, you'll always be healthy and wealthy,
- 8:53focusing on self, indulging in sin and only listening to what
- 8:58sounds good. Y'all.
- 9:00It cools down our love for God and it decreases our dependence
- 9:05on Him. You must be rooted in God's word
- 9:09to keep the fire alive. Let me repeat that.
- 9:13You have to be rooted in God's word to keep the fire alive.
- 9:18Jesus even warns that people will mock God, deny His
- 9:21presence, and turn away from the faith.
- 9:24None of this should surprise us because He is literally given us
- 9:28that in Scripture, but it should sober us and prepare us.
- 9:33Now I want to just say Jesus does not give us exact
- 9:37timelines, but it's actually out of His kindness.
- 9:40He is simplifying things for our finite minds to walk with Him
- 9:45step by step, to trust His plan and His timing, to be faithful.
- 9:50Obey. Endure the reminders that Jesus
- 9:54gives wars and famine and unrest.
- 9:58They're not meant to make us worry.
- 10:00They're meant to stir up urgency.
- 10:03An urgency to fulfill our mission, Matthew 1128.
- 10:07To make disciples of all nations and to share the truth of God's
- 10:11Word. An urgency to love people well,
- 10:14to tell others about Jesus, and to live like he could return at
- 10:18any moment. We're not meant to look around
- 10:22in fear. Looking around actually slows us
- 10:24down, y'all. They taught me that in track
- 10:27when you look to the side to your neighbor, it actually makes
- 10:31your time slower. We are meant to look forward.
- 10:35First Corinthians 924 tells us run to get the prize.
- 10:40First Timothy 612 fight the good fight of faith.
- 10:44Y'all find people who are running toward Jesus.
- 10:47Let them sharpen you. Don't compare yourself to them,
- 10:51but challenge each other and also pray for your fellow
- 10:55believers in Christ. We are the body of Christ.
- 10:59Therefore, when one is suffering and under trial, we are to all
- 11:04feel it and to help them and hold tightly to this promise.
- 11:10In this passage, it says in verse 13, the one who stands
- 11:14firm to the end will be saved. So don't be discouraged guys, do
- 11:19not grow weary. Don't let yourself be cooled off
- 11:24because your king is coming back.
- 11:27So let's go to the Lord in prayer right now.
- 11:31Dear God, we thank you for Your word and thank you for the
- 11:35warnings that come from your love, not to make us fearful,
- 11:40but to prepare us. Would you anchor our hearts in
- 11:43this truth? Keep us from distraction and
- 11:46deception, Father, provide us with the endurance to run our
- 11:51race well and a faith to stand firm to the end.
- 11:56Stir our hearts with urgency, God, not panic, but to live in
- 12:01purpose. Help us to Live Today in light
- 12:05of eternity. Would you strengthen us, your
- 12:10body, Jesus, unify us and keep our eyes fixed on you alone.
- 12:16We wait for you and we long for your return.
- 12:20Come, Lord Jesus, we pray this in your name.
- 12:24Amen. OK, well this was a lot, but I'm
- 12:28praying that the Lord would just continue revealing things to you
- 12:32guys and that it would be a message of hope and
- 12:34encouragement to keep going no matter what you face today.
- 12:38I'll see you all in the next episode.
