- 1:02of the groups, you know who this man is, Andy Kay. And

- 1:21when when I mention the fifty dollars story. If not, you're in for
- 1:25a doozy either way, there is. It's amazing how many controversies there can
- 1:29be in the Simpsons meme groups. And Andy, being an admin of various

- 3:16It is time for me to let you guys sit back and enjoy my conversation
- 3:21with the One the Only Andy Kay. I mean, all I do is
- 3:30podcasts these days. But man, you said you've got two small catality your
- 3:32kids six and a half and one before next week. Okay myself, I
- 3:39pity you. Man, I've got a five year old and an almost three
- 3:42year old on the weekend and holy shit, like pick them up from daycare,
- 3:46dinner time, bed time. It is just a circus that just feels
- 3:49like grandhole day. Right. It's madness, man. I mean, at
- 3:53the end of the day, I guess I know. I expected parenthood to
- 3:57be a challenge, to say the least, and there's been parts where I
- 4:00thought, oh, this is just next level where you're like, you know,
- 4:04how am I going to get through this? And I'm talking like,
- 4:08you know, our youngest with sleep issues, college reflux, and sit my
- 4:13daughter had silent reflux, so I know you pay mate. Oh, the
- 4:15first eight months of our second born, basically he was waking every twenty to
- 4:21forty minutes. So my wife and I we were like literally zombies. I
- 4:26remember on my lunch breaks trying to muster up like the energy to go for
- 4:30a walk, and I was just dragging my feet and my mind was just
- 4:33in this haze, gone like what is this? This is not like,
- 4:38this is not living. But with anything, it passes and it gets easier.
- 4:43And look, you know, chat, there's going to always be challenges.
- 4:46But when you think you get past some of those initial stages and you
- 4:50can start doing more when you take them out and you know, you're a
- 4:54bit more social and you don't feel like it's kind of wrapping up your whole
- 4:58life in this kind of in this situation, it actually, you know,
- 5:01gets pretty enjoyable. And of course, you know, the positives obviously always
- 5:08outweigh the negatives. But yeah, man, I'm just it's been the last
- 5:11few years. Some crazy shit's gone on, but I think we're slowly at
- 5:18that point where you know, our artist is in prep, our second will
- 5:23be in prep, not next year, the year after. And look like
- 5:26you know, I'm sure like yourself, you've Every parent you know has their
- 5:30challenges. Some you know, have different experiences. But I don't think there's
- 5:33anyone on the planet who can be like, no, it's all being a
- 5:36brief and when they do, you're like, bullshit, yeah, absolutely bullshit.
- 5:41You're not yet I don't buy it for a second. And some like
- 5:44to betray it, like on social media, like they'll be like everything's amazing.
- 5:47Then look I get it, like you know, you're not going to
- 5:49be always posting the absolute shit and the lows. But I think sometimes that
- 5:55makes it more relatable when you do hear other people and you're like, you
- 5:59know, talk into mats who have kids, you know, similar ages or
- 6:01even different ages, it doesn't even matter, just saying you know, it's
- 6:04such and such has gone through this period where they won't eat and they run
- 6:09off at dinner time, or I can't get them to daycare in the morning.
- 6:13It's always such a struggle or they're not sleeping at night, they're coming
- 6:15into the room, whatever it might be. And honestly, I don't know
- 6:18about you, man, but I look back now at what my parents,
- 6:24you know, kind of I'm sure that they everything that they went through,
- 6:27and I have such a like a grade of fonder, you know, appreciation
- 6:30for you know, because at the time, you don't know, you don't
- 6:32have a clue. You just you're the kids. So you're just doing whatever
- 6:35the hell you want. But quite dad, basically basically so yeah, no,
- 6:42just long day man, working mornings and afternoons leading into bedtime. You
- 6:46know, it's pretty chaotic. But yeah, both boys are I think one's
- 6:51asleep and one's kind of too much. Yeah, I honestly I would have
- 6:59loved to have rolled the dice for a third if I could guarantee a girl.
- 7:02But I was just like another boy. It's already like there's no off
- 7:06button. It's just the second they're both up, they're they're just don't get
- 7:13yeah, and don't get me wrong, like they're actually quite in the scheme
- 7:16of things. Excuse me, like well behaved. It's just the constant just
- 7:23you know, there's no as I said, there's no off put button.
- 7:25It's just this constant high level of energy and loudness and just and it can
- 7:31you know, I'm a pretty chill guy, and it takes a lot for
- 7:34me to you know, kind of I get to that point where I'm just
- 7:38like, but you know, they if anyone can push those buttons, those
- 7:43boys can. But when they work out how to do it too, and
- 7:46you know, sometimes like you know, they figured it out and they're doing
- 7:48it just to you know, either test the boundaries or get a rise out
- 7:53of you. But it's all good, man, It's just it's just parenthood.
- 7:57Man. How do you find time to do Simpsons memes between all these
- 8:00things? Yeah? I get asked that a lot. So after having done
- 8:05this for what I think the first meme of at least the first Simpsons meme
- 8:09I ever made would have been twenty sixteen. So were you doing memes before
- 8:11the Simpsons ones? Was that sort of just you were doing memes and you
- 8:15transition ones? Yeah? Yeah, more just like just stuffing around with making
- 8:20memes about mates, giving them shit, just you know, croping their faces
- 8:24and you know, either making something like you know, I guess pop culture
- 8:31related at the time, with one of them or just something stupid. You
- 8:35were the meme guy at work with you? Yeah, yeah, pretty much.
- 8:37I mean I always had a bit of an art background, even though
- 8:41my job has literally nothing to do with that. And I always, you
- 8:43know, used to do studio arts and drawing and you know, graphic design
- 8:48when I was in high school. So I always you know, had,
- 8:50I guess, that artistic side, and I always loved The Simpsons, and
- 8:54somehow I don't even like I remember just falling you know, into I think
- 8:58it was the first page, was maybe even the first rock bottom, and
- 9:03I just started, you know, just making a few, as basic as
- 9:05it was, and I look back now and I'm just like, oh god,
- 9:09that's terrible. But it was just a bit of fun and it kind
- 9:13of just started to kind of steamroll from there where I guess they got a
- 9:18bit more popular, and you know that comes with the good and the bad,
- 9:22of course, you know, you know, that's just expected. You
- 9:26know. The more that the memes kind of became popular, you know,
- 9:28the more I guess haters came out of the closet too. Yeah, which
- 9:31which I want to touch on that show. It's just it was absolutely I
- 9:35can I can look. People who might hear this who already don't like me,
- 9:41I can explain I know, you know, people you know who do
- 9:43know me and love my stuff will agree, but I'm happy to touch on
- 9:48it now. The bottom line for me is I have never, once in
- 9:50my life ever gone to someone's meme and criticize them, given them shit.
- 9:56I just it just doesn't for me. It adds absolutely no value. What
- 10:01am I trying to achieve? Why am I bringing this person down and they're
- 10:03giving it a go unless you know, of course they're being complete dicks and
- 10:07they're being super racist, and even still I wouldn't say anything, but as
- 10:13like an admin, I would just boot them, like, you know,
- 10:15you, what are you doing? Like this is just you know, you're
- 10:16pushing a political view or you know, something misogynistic just for the sake of
- 10:22it and basically using Simpsons memes as a template like bullshit, don't do that.
- 10:26So we have the admin of a group or a page. I've been
- 10:30admin for like four groups. Yeah, I'm still admint, so rock bottom
- 10:33boat posting, so basically, well, at the moment, I'm not and
- 10:41again there's a long story behind that. I'm not going to go into it.
- 10:45But but look, I basically know all the admins. It was a
- 10:48misunderstanding where I was kind of flushing out a troll using the boat posting account
- 10:56to try and show that, you know, they were just basically even me
- 11:00shit because it was me, and you know, if I posted something as
- 11:03someone else and a blow and behold, they were commenting really nicely, this
- 11:07is awesome. And when I kind of said hey, it's it's it's end
- 11:11in this admin took it as you know, hey, you're using your authority
- 11:16to get like somebody, are you actually kidding me? Facebook groups? It's
- 11:22just so so in terms of the hate stuff, Look, this is how
- 11:24I look at it, and I've always looked at it. I appreciate,
- 11:28for whatever reason, some people don't like when someone or something gets popular.
- 11:33For some reason, they have perhaps some of their own issues going on,
- 11:37whether it's you know, I guess for a lack of a better word,
- 11:43maybe some hatred towards someone else who might be doing better than it's Biggerustralia to
- 11:50be things. It is, the more popular I became, the more I
- 11:54would receive Hey, don't get me wrong, The positives always heavily out weigh
- 12:00the negatives, but I'd have a lot of people coming out of the woodwork.
- 12:03You know, your memes suck you this, blah blah blah. And
- 12:05you know, I remember this. I still to this day that one of
- 12:07the craziest things is I was making memes. Got to a point, and
- 12:11I'm happy to admit this, where I was approached by a few different companies
- 12:16to actually make memes, so a sporty memorabilia company here in Melbourne. Believe
- 12:20it or not, I was making memes for a cryptocurrency agency for their social
- 12:24media, for their social media, and a few others and basically I was
- 12:33getting paid and it was amazing because I was doing something I loved as a
- 12:37hobby and people saw, perhaps you know, the merit in what I was
- 12:41doing, and they said, look, you're the guy. You have to
- 12:43be the guy to do this for us. Who's turning down a role when
- 12:46they were They've been approached to be paid to do something they love. Why
- 12:50would you ever say no? Absolutely So the way I think this got misinterpreted
- 12:54was somehow someone got a drift of this and they got their wife to private
- 13:03message me on Instagram to say that they had a meme that they wanted me
- 13:07to make blah blah blah, and they needed it for their company, and
- 13:13they were willing to, you know, do a deal kind of thing of
- 13:15it was ongoing, and because I had they said, oh, you know,
- 13:18is there a price? And I said, well, look, I've
- 13:20made literally no you know, no, lie, I've made dozens of memes
- 13:24for people just for no rick because they've said, look, man, can
- 13:28you make this meme? And if I've got time, I'll make it.
- 13:30I had a guy whose brother passed away. He's like, could you crop
- 13:33his face in that one of Homer looking into the clouds? That would mean
- 13:37a lot to me, And I did it. Why would I charge?
- 13:39But because I thought this was a business related thing, I said a price
- 13:43and that was it. They just so for forever. Since then it spread.
- 13:48Andy CA's you know, a douchebag. He charges people for memes blah
- 13:52blah blah. And I was like, oh my god. So this fifty
- 13:54dollars thing came up always that's the thing. It's the fifty dollar thing for
- 13:58me. The fifty dollars is just like, so we used to post your
- 14:01stuff, right, and then we start posting stuff everyone's like, oh,
- 14:03it's Nendy k one was he charging fifty dollars for it? And I was
- 14:07like, what's going on here? What happened? So that's it. So
- 14:09basically I see it. I'm not stupid, man, I can see it.
- 14:11I know it's going on. Like. It doesn't FaZe me. It
- 14:15used to. It used to really piss me off because I was like,
- 14:16guys, I was doing what I thought was an ongoing business transaction. It
- 14:22wasn't someone saying, hey, man, you know I've done that dozens Literally,
- 14:26I can show you my inbox, no problem, I have nothing to
- 14:28prove. But because that, this guy obviously had an issue with me already.
- 14:33He's looking for something and he looked at it. And so people started
- 14:35thinking what I was doing was making my memes and somehow trying to just sell
- 14:39them. I'm like, how is that even possible. I post them online,
- 14:43anyone can take them. Yeah. I was making memes for people who
- 14:48approached me in a company setting. So that's some of the stuff I cop
- 14:54And you know, it's funny. When I was a nobody in terms of
- 14:58making memes, no one gave me hard time. But suddenly it was Andy
- 15:01Kay Andy Kay and people. Some people hated that. But why though I
- 15:05don't understand why. Well, it's, like you said, the tall popular
- 15:09syndrome, I honestly believe without sounding I don't want to sound cocky because I
- 15:13know my memes are popular. Do they appeal to everyone? Absolutely not.
- 15:18I'm not stupid. Do I make some memes that are a bit forced or
- 15:22aren't great? Absolutely? But people think, oh, kind of f you
- 15:26because you're popular. I'm gonna I've said, honestly, man, if you've
- 15:30read some of the comments I've read and the hate I've received just over fucking
- 15:33Simpson's memes, it's it's pretty sad. And I'm like, what's happened in
- 15:37your life for you to be so angry and bitter because someone else is making
- 15:43memes? And is because you legitimately hate my memes so much and it causes
- 15:48you anger that they're popular? Or is it because you've posted memes that haven't
- 15:52really garnered much traction and because of that there's some you know, hostility towards
- 15:58them because you're not replicating that. There could be everything and in between of
- 16:03that, and it doesn't, As I said, now, it doesn't phase
- 16:07me because this is what I used to do. I admit another thing I
- 16:10used to cop shit for was and he's you know, you know, really
- 16:14you know weak, you know, he's he's got no skin. It's just
- 16:18and you know, he gets so angry, and it's like, all right,
- 16:22maybe I used to react in a bad way and I wouldn't talk about
- 16:26you know, I wasn't you know, using horrible you know, swear words
- 16:30or you know, just being down. I was just being a smart ass
- 16:34back. But the reason I guess I say that is because at the end
- 16:37of the day, people only see it at face value. It's like,
- 16:40well you haven't seen you know, in one day, I could have copped
- 16:44ten people just out of the blue, like fuck you, you suck.
- 16:47Your memes are horrible. I'm sorry. I don't give a crap who you
- 16:49are. That's going to start to wear you down, and you sometimes can
- 16:52snap and just be like dude, like what's your problem? Now? If
- 16:56someone does it, I just block them. So that's for me. It's
- 17:00just like, look, I can't win. I just trying to make people
- 17:03laugh. I'm not doing it for popularity. I never started for that reason.
- 17:07I genuinely love the artistic side as far as using you know, the
- 17:11different apps on my phone. Yeah, I want to touch on how you
- 17:15do make you memes a little bit later as well. Yeah. Absolutely,
- 17:18man, absolutely, And it's kind of one of those things where yeah,
- 17:22because it's kind of just become this association like fifty dollars Andy, he's you
- 17:29know, he's he's weak, he can't take criticism. It's like, man,
- 17:33why are you criticizing anyway? First of all, I would never do
- 17:36that to anyone. What's the point, as I said earlier, what am
- 17:38I trying to achieve from this? Like, I don't understand what the ultimate
- 17:42goal is. Do you think like that you bringing me down? Is that
- 17:48making you feel better about yourself? Like do you have you know, is
- 17:52it because you've got, you know, self esteem issues? Is it that
- 17:55your life is at a point where you're so angry the world that this is
- 18:00how you kind of And that's the thing. It's social media. Anyone behind
- 18:06a computer or a phone can have no consequences for being an absolute douche and
- 18:11can rip into you. It's like kids at primary school. They didn't know
- 18:14what they were doing. But man, sometimes you know, I've had like
- 18:18death threats and I'm going to break your legs over memes. I've had people
- 18:22send me death threats to our Facebook page because we didn't give credit to a
- 18:26meme that they made. But it's like, because someone sent us the meme
- 18:29and I was like, who made this, Oh, I don't know,
- 18:30and I'm like, well, and that's yeah, so you put it on
- 18:32and then I'll post in the comments if you know who made this, let
- 18:33me know, which is what I did on this particular one. And they
- 18:37went ballistic in an inbox and I was like, fuck, it's just it's
- 18:41not like you were trying to claim it. It's like me, Brendan Dando,
- 18:45I made this people. Seriously, man, some people just need a
- 18:49fucking reality check and just to snap out of it. This is why I
- 18:52hate social media, you know, in that regard. But look, you
- 18:56know I've admined for three or four different pages at least with my own Instagram.
- 19:03You know, I can just control because you know, in the early
- 19:06days when I started my Instagram, you know, I had all the dickheads
- 19:10who you know, used to cause me grief, especially in you know,
- 19:14see Compy Global Hope Omeganete page. I left that ages ago, but that
- 19:18was one of the cess pools where you know, people just it became like,
- 19:23oh, people are bashing Andy, and you'd get all the kind of
- 19:26bam wagons, you know, guys like, oh, I guess this is
- 19:29what we're doing now. It's like they're not shitting on New Simpsons and more
- 19:32than sitting on Andy k memes. Yeah, yeah, it's just and you
- 19:36know, just to put it into perspective, I like have got hate pages,
- 19:40like literally mean, people have created pages. Just one's called like no
- 19:47Andy's you know page. I think it's hilarious, Like like, if you've
- 19:51invested your time and energy to create a page to hate someone over Simpson's memes,
- 19:56you're the one who needs to relook and reevaluate your own life because that's
- 20:00fucking pathetic. And I know what it again, it was like there was
- 20:03some bond someone who and this is what I always find the most amusing out
- 20:10of out of all the dickheads who you know, like the troll is they
- 20:15want to rip you to shreds. But the minute you even stand up for
- 20:18yourself, even if you're not derogatory at all, they'll be like, oh,
- 20:21yep, so you can't take criticisms, it's like okay, or they
- 20:25rip you to shreds and they want a reaction, and then when you might
- 20:29boot him out of the group, they're like, he's an absolute asshole.
- 20:33It's like, my god, you were the biggest douche ever. You've absolutely
- 20:38ripped me to shreds for nothing. Mind you. Again, I keep to
- 20:41myself, like I like other people's memes or comments, you know, if
- 20:45I find it funny that a lot of other you know, me makers I
- 20:48really respect. But I've never, as I said, given someone a hard
- 20:52time. So it's like it just boggles the mind when how often it could
- 20:56happen. So I've booted a lot of people out of pages purely because not
- 21:00even to do with me. I see it where they're ridiculing someone just ripping
- 21:03into them, and I'm like booted. And of course I'll cop the flak
- 21:07if they find out, you know. So look, it comes with I
- 21:11guess the territory as far as someone I mean, look, I've never you
- 21:15know, had an opportunity to be in a situation, I mean, like
- 21:18I got, you know, in some situations where I was like even to
- 21:22pinch myself moment, like the fact that. I've even had Nancy cart Right
- 21:26like and comment my memes on Instagram. Yeah, the people that work on
- 21:30the show are liking your stuff, so it's like nobody think, you know,
- 21:34you know, that's it. Me and Bill Oakley talk quite a bit.
- 21:37I'm gonna ask whether you actually been in touch because he likes nearly all
- 21:41of you posts. Yeah, oh yeah, so he's been following me.
- 21:42He's re shared and retweeted literally like dozens and dozens and dozens like on his
- 21:48you know, Twitter and stuff, and on his Instagram, and you know,
- 21:52obviously you know the legend who created Steam tams Man. I mean,
- 21:56I can't believe he's following me and my account and loves my stuff. And
- 22:00it does it puts it into perspective. You're like, so some some guy
- 22:06you know from Bloody, you know, Frankston hates my memes and hates me
- 22:11apparently because they're popular. But I've got the voice of Bart Simpson and the
- 22:18original writers. And then I again, like I've had some you know,
- 22:22amazing stuff like that, so it puts it into perspective. If I didn't
- 22:26have kind of you know, a good reception too. I mean, I'm
- 22:30not saying that's the reason to do it, but it helps to kind of
- 22:33push some of the hate stuff aside and say, Okay, I know,
- 22:36you know, I realize why I enjoy doing this. I even had someone
- 22:40from the Hollywood Reporter interview me from New York over the so that was cool.
- 22:45And what was that for when it's about two you two and a half
- 22:48years ago and she was actually in the process. I don't know if it's
- 22:52finished. I haven't touched base with her for a little while, but she
- 22:53was writing a book and she's got a lot of contacts with like, you
- 22:57know, a lot of the voice ACKed and the writers. And she just
- 23:00said, you're you know, everyone seems to know Andy k memes. And
- 23:04she asked me, like, you know, would you like to be interviewed
- 23:07and what's your process? And I was just like, wow, man,
- 23:11that's awesome, Like I'd love to so in terms of how I make them,
- 23:15I think, going back to what you said before, man, they
- 23:19don't take that long these days, because I think you kind of fine tune
- 23:25you know your craft a bit. And you know, I literally used two
- 23:29or three basic apps on my phone. Which apps are they? Yep?
- 23:33So hm the app for cropping is photo Lasso. So basically, anytime you
- 23:41need to cut out a head or body part in terms of the actual art
- 23:48side where you're actually doing the coloring and you know, adding things like facial
- 23:52features or whatever, it's just called art Studio. And the other one is
- 23:57just a auto cap free it's the free app for the text. So so
- 24:06basically my process is usually Okay, you get the idea and then I basically
- 24:12will figure out like all the screen grabs I need. So Frankiak's your best
- 24:18friend for that, mate, what a life saver. Ray. If it
- 24:22wasn't for Frankiak, I couldn't do eighty five ninety percent of the memes I
- 24:26make, so that's been absolutely amazing. And then basically I'll get them all
- 24:30laid out and then I'll be like, okay, so I need to cross
- 24:33his face on Homer's body, so then I'll you know, crop them all
- 24:37out, put them on. Obviously they look really shit at that point,
- 24:40so then I go into the art app and then I do all the adjusting
- 24:44color changes, cropping out the background if Homer's heads a bit more out of
- 24:48the way than you know, this character, and then once all that's done.
- 24:52I basically input it into the text app, add the font, and
- 24:56then basically that's it. It's kind of like, you know, you know,
- 25:00I get like sometimes after doing it for so long, you know,
- 25:04you might be an occasion like a shit, you know, what's my next
- 25:10kind of idea? But it does, you know, for me at least
- 25:12anyway, Like I don't have to sit there just really like straining out an
- 25:17idea for like hours, something will just come to me and believe it or
- 25:22not. Man Like I you know, some people think I have to watch
- 25:25the Simpsons like every day. I haven't watched the proper episode in so so
- 25:30long. Our viewing habits have changed so like it's all on Disney Plus now.
- 25:33Plus we've got two small kids, so it's like they watch what they
- 25:36want to watch half more most of the time these days for me and you
- 25:37in this household. So I was saying to the other day to my co
- 25:41host, I was like, I feel like you might spare time. I
- 25:42barely watched the Simpsons anymore, which was like sad to me because like the
- 25:45Simpsons is does always be on, Like have you found that you don't watch
- 25:48them anywhere as much as you used to Yeah, man, I really don't.
- 25:52I know that as my boys get older, I'll you know, introduce
- 25:56them to it and really get you know, because it's a absolute masterpiece of
- 26:00his show, especially of course the Golden era. So that I find myself,
- 26:04look, man, between working full time, kids, trying to balance
- 26:11any form of social life, and you know, by the time I,
- 26:15you know, put the boys to bed and I want to watch something,
- 26:18generally I'm not you know, we might watch something on Netflix or you know,
- 26:22a new series on Disney Plus or something. So I actually don't have
- 26:27much time these days to watch the Simmas. But because I've watched every episode
- 26:33so many times and because I make means literally still to this day, basically
- 26:37daily, it's so ingrained in my head that I don't I don't think I
- 26:42need to, man like anything from season you know one on two you'd rarely
- 26:48touch on unless it's like a they didn't They didn't put them on TV very
- 26:51often anywhere on Channel ten. I feel like it was like three onwards,
- 26:53and even three not so much. It was more like four through like eight,
- 26:56I reckon the most. Do you remember I am the first time you
- 27:02ever watched The Simpsons ever? I remember the first time I ever saw them.
- 27:06So there's a couple of stories. Yeah, so the first time I
- 27:08ever saw them was I was a huge Muppets fan when I was a kid.
- 27:11I was a big Muppet kid, and they used to play them apparently
- 27:14like six am on Channel ten every weekday. My Naan used to like record
- 27:18it for me before she go to work, and I would go to NaN's
- 27:18place and watch the Muppet Show. I remember because obviously because she was putting
- 27:22it on before she go to work, they'd get the ads in between the
- 27:23episodes or throughout the episodes, and it was like, and she's I've still
- 27:26got the tape. I kept it because she passed away. I kept the
- 27:29tape from her house. It was like new show coming to Channel ten.
- 27:33It's the Simpsons. It's the fucking first Channel ten bromo. Yeah, wow,
- 27:36I remember going. They looked different because they were yellow and stuff,
- 27:40and I never watched it. But apparently I don't remember doing this, thank
- 27:42god. But Bad dream House I've told a story a million times, but
- 27:47a Bad Dream House was apparently on at my house. I would have been
- 27:49three, maybe four most of the time. When Maggie goes to the draw
- 27:53and the kitchen and gets a knife out. I did the exact same thing,
- 27:56and I was banned from watching the Simpsons un til I was six.
- 27:59Oh wow, okay, they man, there you go. So I think
- 28:03that's where my love for the show came. Because I was not allowed to
- 28:04watch it. I'd occasionally, like see that a friend's house or things like
- 28:08that because they have like those videotapes where they had like the four episodes on
- 28:11it and things like that, or they'd rent the videos from the shop.
- 28:14But like I was allowed to properly watch it till I was six, and
- 28:17now I just consumed it so much, you know, oh absolutely, Like
- 28:22I recall me and my brother excuse me, watching TV at our very first
- 28:29house, So this would have been I suppose. I guess the first time
- 28:33they aired Simpsons was eighty nine, ninety or was it ninety ninety one the
- 28:37first time we got as I believe it was ninety one, right, maybe
- 28:41ninety one, because I recall seeing the ads and like you said, man,
- 28:47something about the animation the yellow characters just like drew me into it.
- 28:52And I remember watching the very first episode on the couch sitting next to my
- 28:57dad and my brother sitting next to my mind and just watching the very first
- 29:00episode and just being like already, just something about it, just you know,
- 29:06gravitated towards it. And I remember just you know, Saturday and you
- 29:11know, week nights at ten o'clock sorry, and six o'clock and just being
- 29:15like, this is the best. And it's kind of weird when you look
- 29:21back, actually being at a stage kind of similar to how I was with
- 29:23Seinfeld where you were kind of watching episodes come out at that time during the
- 29:30Golden Era and not just realizing what an impact this show perhaps was actually having.
- 29:36And then I remember, I'll never forget this as well, when from
- 29:40recollection, I think it was they changed show runners. I think around season
- 29:44twelve. Yeah, that's when we went back to al Gene. Yeah.
- 29:47Yeah, And that's when I noticed a huge for me personally, a huge
- 29:52drop in quality as far as the direction of the show, the absurdity,
- 29:56just the lack of heart in it. And it's like, ah, it
- 30:00didn't sit too well. And then as the years kind of progressed, and
- 30:03it's amazing how you can still you know, look back. I mean,
- 30:07honestly, I've seen a handful of new episodes, and you know, I
- 30:08don't sit there on you know, this is you know, complete dog shit.
- 30:12But some episodes I'm like, jeez, it's just it's you know,
- 30:17it's just not the same. And that's fine. It doesn't have to be.
- 30:21You know, it might be drawing a whole new generation of fans,
- 30:25but for me, just living and breathing it through the nineties was just you
- 30:29know, and who doesn't know. I mean then some of the most did
- 30:32not the most recognizable cartoons ever and because of you know the fact that I
- 30:37had the art background, I love the Simpsons, you know, and trying
- 30:42to infuse a bit of humor you know into that. And then it kind
- 30:48of took a life of its own because for me, you know, also
- 30:49growing up gaming and loving you know, Super Nintendo and you know, Mortal
- 30:55Kombat, Mario cart Street Fighter. So I started incorporating a lot of crossovers
- 30:59with my meme. So a lot of the relatable ones too seem to do
- 31:03quite well. Did you do the Rainbow Bridge one? That was the best?
- 31:07Yeah? Yeah, holy shit, that was a fucking peak. That
- 31:11was other man, I've done a lot of you know, and again that's
- 31:15another thing. Sometimes I cop shit for and that's fine. Like I guess,
- 31:18sometimes I do go through a stage of having something I kind of go
- 31:22back to, and it's because I love it. You know, I've done
- 31:26a lot of crossovers with yeah, street Fighter, wa Combat. But then
- 31:30again, I've done a heap with movies, Terminate a Ninja, Turtles,
- 31:33Jurassic Park, you know, and then it's it's so it's pop culture stuff,
- 31:40you know, stuff with bands, stuff with TV shows. But look,
- 31:45man, I you know I've I look back and yeah, I mean
- 31:49I had a meme, a real basic one recently where it was I made
- 31:55it where it was an up view of Homer's face sitting on the couch,
- 32:00and I made the kind of quote every fifty year old guy posting their profile
- 32:06pick that went so well. Well, man, I was scrolling through my
- 32:12feed and I had a recommendation for this meme page and of course, low
- 32:16and behold, someone's posted that meme. It was at that stage I don't
- 32:21even check again, it was one hundred and sixty six k likes. Crazy.
- 32:25I was like, what the what the hell? Some chick had just
- 32:29found it and she'd reposted. And again I didn't care, like honestly,
- 32:31like I used to care, and it's like whatever, like do you still
- 32:36put your name on them? Or do you stop doing that? Look?
- 32:37No, I do occasionally, but honestly, like sometimes I just like,
- 32:43what's the point? Like I I, you know, I used to put
- 32:46andy kay as an actual watermark, and then I'd have to go into another
- 32:51app to put the watermark. So now I just kind of hand wrote a
- 32:52K. If I remember, I'll do it. But sometimes I'm just like
- 32:57whatever, like I'll just do it. I'll just quickly put it up and
- 33:00just be like, man, you know it's gone. Stop. You're probably
- 33:01going to crop out the watermark anyway in some way. Yeah, I had.
- 33:05I've had a page, an Argentinian page, and they were literally stealing
- 33:10every one of my memes and just cutting out all the text and replacing it
- 33:15with again at the time it used to put it. I've just got to
- 33:17look at it now and just be like, hey, people like my stuff
- 33:21whatever, that's cool. Like, you know, I've had people be like,
- 33:23hey, isn't this yours? Man? Like there's a guy on Reddit
- 33:27who is like getting like hundreds of thousand likes for all your memes and that's
- 33:30all good. I've seen, as I said, other Instagram pages use my
- 33:36stuff and dad like it's it's crazy man, Like I don't. I guess
- 33:40that's a way of saying, hey, you know if they like it.
- 33:44So, I mean, it'd be nice occasionally if someone you know would credit
- 33:49you and just say yeah, this is But you know, if it's in
- 33:52a forum, whereas like bought posting, you know, you can call someone
- 33:54out pretty easy, like come on, dude, that that's my hand.
- 33:59But if it's some Argentinian guy and you're just like, they're never going to
- 34:02respond. Nah, I don't care. I always try to link to your
- 34:07Instagram page these days, I do you put one of yours up? Yeah?
- 34:09And little man, as I said, like, it's funny how I
- 34:13could guarantee you, like, if you put a number of my memes up
- 34:16without crediting me, you'll see, you know, a very different response in
- 34:21the comments section. That's why started putting the Instagram link, because when I
- 34:24was putting credit Andy Kay, all these comments are coming through blah blah,
- 34:29and I'm like, well just put a link to his Instagram page instead,
- 34:30and people just didn't realize it was you half to talk it was just Simpson's
- 34:34meme factory, like, oh this is great. I see you. If
- 34:37I had to put andy K, you would have shooed on this for no
- 34:39reason. And that was like the guy that I kind of I'm not going
- 34:44to name him, but he basically has about I've had the block can of
- 34:47his accounts. He's like obsessed man, and he just keep going creating new
- 34:51accounts. Bill. There's Bill as mac grainy, but no, like there
- 34:59was this one guy. He just was a hell bent on giving me a
- 35:02hard time. And as I said, I did the little theory of posting
- 35:07something as not me as the bought posting kind of admin, and he loved
- 35:12it and was commenting, and I think the comment even was along the lines
- 35:15of so this is so much better than something andy K could ever do.
- 35:19And I pissing myself. And then when I wrote under it, you're joking,
- 35:24right, and he's like, what do you mean? I'm like,
- 35:27you know, this is actually an Andy King mean And then from there the
- 35:30other admin took it as you. I was just like, I'm not going
- 35:32to get into it. Look, I'm just trying to prove a point.
- 35:35And I flushed him out to just get rid of him, and I was
- 35:39proven a point again that like, you know, some people will just hate
- 35:43on you because they hear the name, Like I've seen the guys like recently,
- 35:45like some guys who'll be like fifty dollars and I'll be like, hey,
- 35:49man, if you want to believe a rumor started by someone who you
- 35:54know has his own bloody issues and created this out of some hatred to towards
- 36:00me based on no truth, like the fact that he thought like, yeah,
- 36:04I just make means and try and some I don't understand why that bothered
- 36:07people anyway, even if you did that. Ah, it's just like,
- 36:09oh, how dare you try to earn money for something that should be free?
- 36:15But you've made something? Who cares if you're trying to You're not making
- 36:21them pay you, so why do they care? I just don't understand that.
- 36:22And and the concept was so stupid, like they legitimately thought I was
- 36:29making memes and somehow like, well how would I even like would I put
- 36:34them on a website and people would bid for them? It's not bloody NFT,
- 36:37it's not an NFT. So I don't know. And it's almost like
- 36:42that angered people so much. For some reason, and it wasn't even true.
- 36:45Like, as I said, I was open and honest about saying I
- 36:49have made means for companies. The fact that they approached me, I think
- 36:52is amazing. That I was getting paid a weekly salary to make me.
- 36:58Maybe that's jealousy, Maybe that's there are insecurity. I don't know. I
- 37:00don't really care. But it resulted in just this backlash, you know,
- 37:06Like I had one guy just ripping into me because I was using at one
- 37:09stage a template and I was basing the joke on a rhyme. Okay,
- 37:15whatever, big deal, and he just thought it was He just he couldn't
- 37:19let that go. I'm so clever and he's rhyme in a word with another
- 37:22word. I'm like, why are you getting angry? Man? It's a
- 37:27meme. What's the problem. Do you still get them with that? Still?
- 37:30The people complaining about you and bring this up look generally nowhere near as
- 37:37much at all. And I think a big part of that is because I
- 37:40left you know, the most toxic page a few years back, and you'll
- 37:45find it. I've blocked a lot of people, and I cop shit for
- 37:46that because another guy's, oh, that's the other thing. Andy can't take
- 37:51criticism, so he blocks him on No, no, no, no,
- 37:52no, I'll block you because you're a fucking dickhead. I blocked you because
- 37:57you're berating me, you're abusing me, and I'm meant to just sit there
- 38:00and take it. Well, No, I've got better things to do with
- 38:04my life than listen to your crap. I don't need your negativity. If
- 38:07you hate me, good for you, man. But to go out of
- 38:10your way to just say some shit, good for you, man. But
- 38:15I don't want to hear it. So I'll block you because at the end
- 38:17of the day, I used to argue with dickheads like you, and what
- 38:22am I? I'm getting pissed off about it. You can't win no matter
- 38:25how you react to those kind of people. We win, Yep. I've
- 38:29had guys like where they just want to start a fight, So you could
- 38:30just joke back, be really polite and doesn't matter. As you said,
- 38:34it doesn't matter what I would say. It doesn't it. They've already made
- 38:37their mind up that they hate you. Again. It could be just based
- 38:42on hearing some other person talk crap about me, and that's it. So
- 38:46look, you know that's the negative side, that's fine. You know,
- 38:51As I said, I do get way more positive feedback. And I've had
- 38:55some amazing situations from you know, your Bill Oakley is to interviews. And
- 39:00I know this sounds crazy, man, but I literally have been approached at
- 39:06least i'd say six seven times here in Melbourne by people who have recognized me,
- 39:10Like whether it's at a club. I was even at a Bucks night
- 39:13once at the streets for a Bucks. Did you and put your face on
- 39:17memes? Sometimes? Did? You can't remember those ones? No? Man,
- 39:22just going to my profile sust me out. Yeah, they probably see
- 39:25and Andy Kay, they click on my profile, I guess they see what
- 39:29I look like. And so I'd be out and i'd literally have a guy
- 39:32come up, like even recently happened twice. I was at like a Djight
- 39:37event and some guy kind of looking at me. I'm trying to suss out
- 39:42is he trying to like start a fight? And no, it came over
- 39:45you, Andy Kay and have a chat. That's cool, man, Like
- 39:46I you know, I love I love that. You know, it's crazy,
- 39:52like you know it all because of like some symptons memes. But yeah,
- 39:54so like the process, man, I mean in terms of finding tire,
- 40:00I'm you know, I do find it pretty relaxing. So I might
- 40:05put the boys to bed, I might have maybe thirty forty five minutes before
- 40:09maybe my wife will, you know, joining me watching TV. She might
- 40:13go have a shower or do do something else, and I'll just find that
- 40:16little window man and I might have an idea already kind of going around,
- 40:20and I'll just put it into action and look, some memes you can knock
- 40:24out a lot quicker. Some give you go through my Instagram, you can
- 40:28see I've put a lot more work into it. But I don't find it
- 40:30like a like a hassle. I really enjoy it. It's like I guess,
- 40:36kind of like with Jim, for me, it's therapeutic, like I
- 40:38go to the gym because I genuinely enjoy it. I don't think it's about
- 40:43an appearance thing so much as it is is the release you might have,
- 40:46you know, a hard day, or you don't even have to have a
- 40:49hard day. It's just this kind of some form of release as far as
- 40:52making memes. You know, it's like you switch off and you kind of
- 40:58go into autopilot mode, like you just on there. If I had to
- 41:00sit behind a computer and do it, I probably would never have made a
- 41:04meme in my life. But it's convenience of on the phone, man,
- 41:07so shit and making meme at the same time, killing two birds beautiful beautiful.
- 41:15So yeah. Man, it's been a crazy six seven years of doing
- 41:20this, all the highs and lows as far as but at the end of
- 41:23the day, look, I'm a dad, I'm a husband, I work
- 41:28full time. It's a hobby. It's cool that I've had some recognition.
- 41:31As I said, it goes sometimes hand in hand. And look, man,
- 41:36I'm a nobody. I'm just someone who makes memes. I can only
- 41:37imagine, you know, like a celebrity, some of the hate that they
- 41:42must cop and I see it. I see any bands, you know on
- 41:46social media, everyone's everyone's you know, can has a voice behind their computer
- 41:52or their phone. So if I'm copying what I cop just as someone who
- 41:55makes memes, I can only imagine what it'd be like for someone who voices
- 41:59in aion or you know, has other people having to run their accounts.
- 42:04Because I've seen some you know some you know, someone says their Trump or
- 42:09their Biden and automatically, their their Instagram account becomes a hate page for the
- 42:15other people on the other side. That's the nature of where we're at in
- 42:19twenty twenty three. I keep politics out of everything we do. It's just
- 42:22not worth the fucking hassle. Dude. If you look through my memes,
- 42:25you'll never see one political memes. It's not worth it. The only time
- 42:30I've ever included like an Australian like prime minister or something is for the joke,
- 42:36as far as it could be based around their name. It's not about
- 42:39their political stance or their that doesn't like for example, like you know rock
- 42:45Bottom. I'm an admin and it's at a point now and for a very
- 42:52long time where it's as I said before, people are using Simpson's memes just
- 42:58as basically a conduit to push their political views. So there's a lot of
- 43:02hatred and it's just like, man, that's why I avoid it. Because
- 43:07we started the podcast. That's what our pages for the podcast essentially, But
- 43:12we sort of became like a mean thing as well. But we started the
- 43:15podcast to just sort of create a like minded Simpsons community. We can just
- 43:20talk about the Simpsons and have a good time and you go into the ship
- 43:22posting groups nowt it's just so much angst, just straight away from why what
- 43:27they'll created for in the first place. That's exactly why I don't. I
- 43:30don't see the point like I'm trying to make people laugh. I'm not trying
- 43:35to push, you know, my own agenda. What's the like do that
- 43:38somewhere else, man, go to an actual page that's dedicated that might share
- 43:43your views. But when it comes to Simpsons, man, keep it just
- 43:46freaking low key, funny, relatable. You know, I applaud people who
- 43:54give it a crack. I couldn't care less, you know, if it's
- 43:58low quality or you know, they it's my cup of tea as long as
- 44:01they're giving it a crack man, because I know my memes aren't a cup
- 44:05of tea for everyone. Sometimes, you know, the worst they look,
- 44:07the better. It adds to the charm of it as well. It does.
- 44:09It's like some like again I don't want to name names, but there's
- 44:13one guy in particular who you know, I think that's his kind of his
- 44:17niches. There's really kind of like badly crop but in a way that's like
- 44:22it makes it so much better. I love it like crack because he knows
- 44:27it. It's not like he's just like taking the piss out of himself.
- 44:30And I just think it's hilarious because it's just like he's not taking it too
- 44:34seriously for me. I guess maybe because I had the art background, I
- 44:37could maybe you know, know my way around, you know the art side
- 44:40of things, and you know, even shadows and crop in and you know
- 44:45that type of thing which helps you know if you want to do a bit
- 44:47of a better quality as far as how you present it to sell, the
- 44:51kind of idea, you know, and some stuff like you know, if
- 44:54you do it kind of seamless enough, people shouldn't actually know that you've put
- 45:00much effort into it. So for example, like I could use a Star
- 45:04Wars scene and I find a storm trooper, but he's in the wrong pose,
- 45:08and I need it to be a certain pose, like maybe doing the
- 45:12mo for one one funk, you know, dance. But if you crop
- 45:15it in a way to make it look seamless, they might just think,
- 45:21oh, he might have found that just on the net. But sometimes it
- 45:24takes it can take a fair bit of work. As I said about,
- 45:27it really depends on the style. But it's kind of a thing as well
- 45:32where sometimes you think a memes a bit man, but you're like, ah,
- 45:36it's it's harmless enough whatever, and you put out there and it just
- 45:38explodes. Oh yeah, like there was that one we put up. I
- 45:43love the nostalgia ones the most. I think nostalge ones that me and you
- 45:45did, one that put up about a month ago. I reckon where it
- 45:49was the CDs in the sleeves in the car style at the time that went
- 45:53mental it did. I've seen that reshare quite a bit and again yeah,
- 45:59like I've seen it on lots of different pages. But it's cool because I've
- 46:02similar to what you said, man, it's relatable. I've made some of
- 46:07those ones, like I've done one where you know, what was it?
- 46:10Oh, that's right, so Grandpa Simpson, you know there's one where he's
- 46:15seen So I pretended I was smoking a cigarette when it was cold outside,
- 46:19which is the style of the time, so you know as a kid it
- 46:21was cold and you blew out the air and those types of ones have you
- 46:24know, done really well. I've found ones where the crossover ones have done
- 46:30well, like I did this terminator one is dead or something yeah, yeah,
- 46:37one of those ones. But I also did the one where again at
- 46:42the time I thought it was funny, but I didn't realize it go the
- 46:45way it went was Sarah Connor's holding the fence and Homer's pouring milk in cereal,
- 46:52and then the next scene it's just that bloody nuclear wave and people just
- 46:57lost that shit. And and then as I kind of look back and I
- 47:00was like, it's pretty good. Like and there's times where I think I've
- 47:02actually got a home run and it doesn't get much traction. You just look.
- 47:07I think, for me, like the one thing I can say I
- 47:10feel like, you know, happy about is I think at least overall,
- 47:14I've got a decent strike rate. Like you know, as I said,
- 47:17man, I'm not sitting here with any kind of cockiness thinking yep, yep,
- 47:22I'm this, I'm that. Everything I do. I know I've made
- 47:25some absolute fucking stinkers. I know some have been terrible. I know some
- 47:30have been it's just but that's with anyone, man. But you have people
- 47:34who like go out of their way to wait for you to do that one.
- 47:37Yes, he's means of shit. Yep, they suck. I find
- 47:40that you don't really follow the trends, do you, because you know it's
- 47:44always there's a trend in the groups, and everyone just does the same fucking
- 47:46thing over and over again. I find yours are sounds like where did that
- 47:51come from? That's it? So I don't I have started a few without
- 47:58meaning to, like I might, I've started that's Sarah Connor one. After
- 48:01I made that one, I noticed for weeks there was that nuclear blast scene
- 48:07used over and over and it's happened dozens of times over the years. But
- 48:09nah, I don't tend to ever follow. I think for me, what
- 48:13I might do is, for example, I'll be flicking through my Instagram just
- 48:16looking at some of my older memes, and I don't know, something would
- 48:22just pop up, like I'll see, you know, a purple drapes me
- 48:24and I'm like, I haven't done purple drapes in a while. And then
- 48:30you've got the way my process works. I don't know, everyone's different.
- 48:32Is I've got to say I feel like, yeah, purple drapes would be
- 48:36a good one right now. Then I'll go through some of the other templates
- 48:39I've used and see whether there's anything that connects the dots. If it feels
- 48:45forced, I'll leave it if it doesn't make sense. But someday and you'll
- 48:49come up with an idea. Sometimes you're like, how the hell have I
- 48:52not thought of that before? And then I'll do my little search in the
- 48:54groups to see if anyone else has done it, just to make sure that
- 48:58doesn't you know, And sometimes you can't find everything. Worse person, Oh
- 49:02oh god, apparently yeah, you know, And that was always funny,
- 49:07like I used to have. I used to see. You know, a
- 49:09lot of people make memes I've made before, a lot, right, And
- 49:15that's fine. They're not following me. They don't know every group I'm in.
- 49:17I don't give a shit, you know. But the minute if I
- 49:21ever did a Harrison on someone else's meme, I stole it. I copied
- 49:24them. I'm like, oh my god, so you think that I found
- 49:29someone else's meme that was posted in this group. I remade it, spent
- 49:32the time posted in the very same group, and fingers crossed, no one
- 49:37else noticed. Why would someone do that? That makes no You should have
- 49:43stay on Instagram. You should just avoid Facebook like the plague and to stay
- 49:45in Instagram. So kind of to answer that man. I find that bought
- 49:52posting. Even though I'm not an adamin anymore. They're really good with how
- 49:55they generally run the page as far as key been at friendly no bullshit,
- 50:00no bullying. You know, if you report something, they'll put someone in
- 50:05line. So that is the only group. Even though I'm an admin on
- 50:08rock Bottom, I haven't posted there in many, many months, purely because
- 50:12of the same reason another admin left. It's just become just too political hate
- 50:17field. That's where we tried to always be. I was actually mentioned on
- 50:22a recent podcast. I know, mat I have nothing against rock Bottom,
- 50:25but I always saw like us as like black and white in the sense that
- 50:29everything that we wouldn't post would be on that page, you know what I
- 50:32mean, Like we would never do anything political. We didn't do the Tobias
- 50:35meanings of dropping the sea bomb and things like that. Look, we tried
- 50:37to be like the family friendly one because we're such We're so associated with the
- 50:42actual show and people who work on the show, and like Disney run sponsorships
- 50:46throughout podcasts and things like that, Like we need to sort of be the
- 50:49family friendly Simpsons community. Yeah, and good and rightly so bad and look
- 50:52don't get me wrong. Like, you know, I've been an admin for
- 50:55rock Bottom for like seven years and I've got you know, I'm very I'm
- 51:00good mates with you know, Matt, who you know runs the page.
- 51:06Of course, he's the one who asked me back in twenty sixteen to help
- 51:08be an admin, and I've been one since. But the reason I'm saying
- 51:12I don't post as much as it's not against it's just I just kind of
- 51:15I'm happy to do the admin staff keep an eye on things. But when
- 51:20it lost, you know, some of the heart of what Simpson's memes was
- 51:22about, it just was so I left, you know, compu Global because
- 51:28again the hate in that group and no one was man in it. No
- 51:31one was I wasn't an admin, so I would report something and people were
- 51:35just letting it go, which made me think that some of the other admins
- 51:37didn't like me. And I used to sit there going, man, like,
- 51:40I've literally had no interaction with you. I've never said a bad thing
- 51:45to you, but because of my memes, you hate me, Like that's
- 51:49insane. Like I used to still think like, but again I had this.
- 51:53Even my wife's like, just don't even overthink it. Just think of
- 51:58it as it's not your issue. You you've done nothing to start a rise,
- 52:01You've never been arrogant being like yep, I'm number one my memes.
- 52:06I've never seen anything even remotely close to that. I've never put anyone down,
- 52:12So what does it come down to. It's someone else's issue that they
- 52:15can just deal with. And instead of me reacting the way I used to
- 52:21do and sometimes getting worked up, especially if it's like the fifth person on
- 52:23the day, just to come out with some stupid bullshit for for absolutely no
- 52:28reason, and they making it personal, and it's just like yeah, and
- 52:31that's why I started blocking people. I was like, man, how fun
- 52:35is it blocking somebody though, like someone on one of their posts and just
- 52:38like ban and delete? What look it is? It is? It's a
- 52:44it's actually a nice feeling when you're arguing with someone and you're like, Okay,
- 52:47not this is back then, not any mightn't really I don't do it
- 52:52really anymore ever, But and you write something and I know I could be
- 52:57a smart ass back because I'm not really wanted to take shit. Like as
- 53:00much as I would never instigate it, I would still stand up for myself
- 53:04and the best feeling was writing something back and knowing that they're in the process
- 53:07of typing and block and then blocking them so when they actually hit posts,
- 53:14so like this page no longer exists and they can just stew on that for
- 53:17a while. But you definitely you gold home with the jewels at that point,
- 53:21aren't you. Yeah, that's it. Just laugh Yeah, absolutely,
- 53:25man. So yeah, So look, it's funny because I do wonder,
- 53:30like sometimes people must think, you know, they must wonder like, you
- 53:35know, I've had a lot of you know, the people who do love
- 53:37my stuff, so like, how do you feel about all that stuff?
- 53:39And I'm like, look, man, again, you know, I know,
- 53:42I know it's there. I'm very well aware. It doesn't really bother
- 53:45me anymore because I just kind of just do my own things, stay in
- 53:49my own lane. And that's why I only post in one Facebook group,
- 53:52I run my Instagram. How long will I do this, man, I
- 53:55don't know, but for now I still enjoy it because my wife remember even
- 54:00when we first met, Hell, you've been married for I've been married.
- 54:05We've been with her for eight years and we'd be married for five years.
- 54:07Were made for a decade. Awesome congrats. That's awesome. Man. So
- 54:12I think when we first met so twenty fifteen, she used to, you
- 54:16know, see me at the end of the night and she's like, do
- 54:20you feel like kind of like obligated to do this? Like do you feel
- 54:23like a pressure? And I said, no, no, absolutely not.
- 54:25I said. The minute that I feel obligated and forced to come up with
- 54:30ideas is the day I know I'm just gonna not do it anymore. But
- 54:35look like, you know, who doesn't love you know, making something that
- 54:38people will have a laugh at, and like, I mean, it is
- 54:40a bit of a you know, a bit of an adrenaline kind of you
- 54:45know shot, a bit of a serotonin hit, dopamine hit. You know,
- 54:49it's a good feeling. And I think, you know, when you
- 54:52can be creative and people relate to it and find it funny, that's awesome.
- 54:57I think that's why I keep doing it too, is you know,
- 55:00it's nice to it, you know, for one split second of someone's day,
- 55:05just like make them have a bit of a laugh, for a chuck,
- 55:07or just make them, you know, put a grin to someone's face.
- 55:09Man, It's it's as soppy or cliche as that sounds. Why else
- 55:13would you do it? For man, Like it's you've got a group of
- 55:16people who love the show. You're relating it to stuff that might you know,
- 55:22might be appealing on nostalgic. If you can put a bit of humor
- 55:24and a bit of that spin on it, I think that's like awesome.
- 55:28And when you start, like, you know, because like if you go
- 55:30through, for example, I've got like a favorites folder on my phone and
- 55:34it's just like all saved PNGs, everything you could imagine, you know,
- 55:38from the Simpsons, from video games. So it helps when you know you've
- 55:43you know, you've kind of got like your little tool kit of what to
- 55:45do. But you know, it's uh yeah, man, it's it's instill
- 55:50enjoyable. And for now, I keep you know, look, I used
- 55:53to at one point, I don't do it anymore. Was probably making sometimes
- 55:57even two or three a day. I can't do that anymore. No,
- 56:00listen, LEAs you're making money from doing it unless you're getting paid to Yeah,
- 56:04correct, that's this is pre kids. But since kids, you know,
- 56:07I'll generally do one to day, not always now, like there might
- 56:09be a day or two that you know, but I've got so much backlog
- 56:14of material that, let's say I haven't made a meme that day, I
- 56:17could quickly flick back to twenty twenty twenty nineteen, twenty twenty one, sure,
- 56:22and find one to put on Instagram and just be like, yeah,
- 56:24cool. You know how many have you gotten your backlog as in unposted,
- 56:30never be posted posted? Yeah? Hundreds, really hundreds hundreds, So you
- 56:35can just take a gap year. I could if I wanted to, Like,
- 56:38you know, and there's some that you know I've posted, but I
- 56:44posted so long ago that people i'd say ninety nine point nine percent would not
- 56:49have recall it, like if I may. I've had some that did exceptionally
- 56:53well in twenty seventeen, twenty eighteen. I'll give it five years. If
- 56:57it's more than five years, it's free range to go again, I reckon.
- 57:00Yeah, look, I've remade a few. I remember making one using
- 57:04the scene where it was Marge as a child on the bus and there's the
- 57:08girl you like the monkeys? That scene, I've used that template, and
- 57:12it was one where I think it was that's right. It was charmers with
- 57:16a little lunch box and then girls like ooh, you like principal skinner,
- 57:21you know, he never had Aurora borealis in his kitchen, and he goes
- 57:23he did, so he doesn't even steam. He doesn't even steam his own
- 57:28hands. And then it's like he's just the screen yea. And people freaking
- 57:30love that one. So I remade it because it looks so bootleg, the
- 57:34old version of the old font. And one person goes, I know this
- 57:38from somewhere. Have you made is this yours? And I'm like, yeah,
- 57:42it's mine. I go I remade it for about five years old,
- 57:45and they're like, I remember, but yeah, I just you know,
- 57:47but that literally there was one person out of the hundreds of comments. But
- 57:52it was just a bit of fun to remake it. Give it a give
- 57:54it a bit of a nice new polish. But yeah, was he still
- 57:58having fun doing it. That's all. That's like with the podcast. I
- 58:00said to my wife, like, I took a pun to myself last year
- 58:04last August, I was like, I'm doing an office job. I'm not
- 58:06enjoying this. I don't feel like I'm being you know, looked after and
- 58:09appreciated. Fuck it, I own as much doing my podcast from like patrons
- 58:14and things like that is what I do with this job. I'm just going
- 58:15to quit my job, my wife and then go back to work full time.
- 58:17Because she was climbing the wall. She wanted to get out of the
- 58:20house. She had four years off of the kids, and it's just wor
- 58:22there for the better man. And but I said to her, like,
- 58:24the second this feels like work, I probably don't want to do it anymore.
- 58:29But then again, getting paid to talk about the Simpsons is pretty fun.
- 58:31Like, I know how fucking lucky I am. You know, I
- 58:35was gonna say, dude, look, I'll be I'll be the first.
- 58:37I'm envious man, because what you do and I know how successful you guys
- 58:43are is fucking amazing. I tried my you know, I tried a few
- 58:50years back at Patreon, right. I gave it a shot. And again,
- 58:53it's not about trying to monitor. Look, man, if why the
- 58:59hell wouldn't you try if you could try and monetize something that you enjoy.
- 59:04It wasn't me, you know, I never got into it for that reason.
- 59:07But as the whole fifty dollars bullshit thing was that I was actually getting
- 59:10paid at a period, and quite a good amount at that stage to make
- 59:14memes, and then I realized, like, you can't really do it with
- 59:19the Simpsons as far as memes, because why would someone. Yeah, I
- 59:23had a few patrons, of course, but nothing substantial. And I get
- 59:27it because I look back at I'm thinking, well, once you make the
- 59:30meme, it's kind of there. What more can you do with it?
- 59:34You laugh at it for two seconds, you might share it with a few
- 59:36mates, right, there's no other value. So what's someone get a gain
- 59:40by being a patreon when they get to see your means on your Instagram or
- 59:45on Facebook. So for you, what you do and how many Patreons you've
- 59:50got is insane, man, Because I've had so many people like say,
- 59:53oh, you know, dude, surely you're getting paid for this. I'm
- 59:55like, nah, man, I'm not. I've never been paid or an
- 1:00:00actual Simpsons meme on its own, because at the end of the day,
- 1:00:04I am using a copyrighted intellectual property that I tried a T shirt or too.
- 1:00:10I got them taken down straight away. So I just thought, look,
- 1:00:15I do it because I enjoy it, but I like to get paid
- 1:00:16for it. Absolutely, it'd be amazing. It's like you, man,
- 1:00:21you get to talk about Simpsons and get that. Like for me, that
- 1:00:25would be the dream, Like I would love that. But like you know,
- 1:00:30as I said, my job, I come from a psychology, social
- 1:00:32work, counseling background. I got. My job has got nothing to do
- 1:00:37with my artistic side, which in some ways kind of is a bit depressing
- 1:00:40because I kind of look back and think maybe I should have pursued that more.
- 1:00:45And just seeing like how much success I've had with the memes as far
- 1:00:49as at least growing an audience and people enjoying it, that's been cool.
- 1:00:53But the fact that you can, you know, do a podcast, and
- 1:00:58I've thought about other avenues, like, you know, do I start a
- 1:01:00YouTube channel? I know I can do a lot of different voices. I've
- 1:01:05actually had an idea for a channel which I know has been done to an
- 1:01:08extent where you basically have a movie scene and you overdub it with a different
- 1:01:14voice and you try and replicate what their mouth is saying to actually, you
- 1:01:19know, whatever it comes out with. It could be nonsensical, it could
- 1:01:22be Yeah. So there's one channel in particular that do it bad lip reading
- 1:01:27and this guy is a bloody music producer man. He does this as a
- 1:01:31side gig. He's got like thirteen million subscribers. He's making a killing that
- 1:01:36Yoda one he did that exploded. Yeah, and I've done one. I
- 1:01:40haven't put it out. You're one of the first people to know this.
- 1:01:45I've made one for Jurassic Park. I've overdubbed all the voices. It only
- 1:01:49goes for about three or four minutes. But I started like, oh,
- 1:01:52you know, there was so much work that went into it beyond what I
- 1:01:55thought. And I was like, oh, do I go down this path?
- 1:01:59But try it? Why not? Look, I might, you know,
- 1:02:02I've got to. I've literally got to just do a few things to
- 1:02:06tweak it. My brother's the one who's been really good at helping me out
- 1:02:09with like the kind of tech side. I wish it was just like in
- 1:02:14terms of the scripting of watching the movie that the scene, getting the script
- 1:02:17down, doing the actual recording, that's the easy part. It's the kind
- 1:02:21of mixing editing part that was like the pain and the ass and got to
- 1:02:24be careful with songs that you can't use and all that, you know,
- 1:02:28copyright strike crap. But hey man, i'd love to, you know,
- 1:02:31I'd love to quit a day job. To be able to do something like
- 1:02:36that, but who knows. Man, Like, one day maybe an idea
- 1:02:39would just come to me. But one day we're just likecky that we won
- 1:02:43the first Simpsons podcasts because when we did it, there was only one other
- 1:02:45one the people we were the second Simpsons podcast. Now it feels like there's
- 1:02:49two hundred. I bet, I bet it's saturated now. But we just
- 1:02:52we just got in there early, you know, built that fan base up,
- 1:02:55and just we've got The thing is, people start a Simpsons podcast now,
- 1:03:00a lot of them did it over covid. They got boreds, like,
- 1:03:00what can we do? There's Simpsons. You know, there's like one
- 1:03:02hundred new ones started over covid. But it's like we already had like twelve
- 1:03:07thirteen seasons of the show reviewed in our library before these ones even started.
- 1:03:12So we've already got that back cat looks. When people find us, they're
- 1:03:14like, shit, there's five hundred hours of reviews here for us to listen
- 1:03:16to. I'm just gonna go to this. There's someone who's just yeah,
- 1:03:20absolutely, man, that's crazy, like and you know that's I remember reading
- 1:03:24something. I think you made a post at one point saying that, yeah,
- 1:03:29you'd chucked in the job and you're doing this. Yeah it's on that
- 1:03:31page. Yeah, I'm just like, fuck it, I'm quitting probably where
- 1:03:35I saw it. Yeah, and I put the shot of home of burning
- 1:03:37the bridge. Mate live in the dream. Many live in the dream,
- 1:03:43like as in, there's not many people who can legitimately say they love what
- 1:03:47they do. Like as I said, let's say if someone turned around and
- 1:03:52said, Andy, I will match your current salary to just keep doing what
- 1:03:55you're doing and the memes, but do it for us who like, say
- 1:04:00know, you'd say you wouldn't say, you'd say yes and a heartbeat.
- 1:04:03I was just lucky to be in a position where my wife would go back
- 1:04:05to work and get paid enough to sort of balance it out. And then
- 1:04:08it just because I was doing it full time, I could put more content
- 1:04:11out, which means we've got more followers, and it just ended up being
- 1:04:13like the best thing ever. But man, it was scary at the time
- 1:04:15though. I was like, you know what, I'd rather I'd rather try
- 1:04:18this for two three years, fail at it, then go oh, I
- 1:04:21mean I wish I had a tried I think for you as well. Man,
- 1:04:26the beauty of it is that you could have initially started it whilst maintaining
- 1:04:31your job. We did. I was doing it for seven years. Yea.
- 1:04:34Yeah, and as you start to see things kind of pick up,
- 1:04:39you can make that decisive decision like, hey, I don't think I need
- 1:04:43the job anymore. It might still be a little bit of a risk at
- 1:04:45the time, but I'm sure you get to a point and then it's just
- 1:04:48and then you like look back and go, hey man, this is this
- 1:04:51is freaking awesome. I was very, very lucky. Yeah. So I'm
- 1:04:56getting to wind up my wife's we've been wrapped this up very soon. I
- 1:04:59think the kids. I think the kids have been a bit of a struggle
- 1:05:00of bedtime. So I won't keep it. I won't keep you, man.
- 1:05:03But I've got a question for you though. I've just send it to
- 1:05:05you about this this marathon. What I'd like to do I'd like to ask
- 1:05:09people. So it's nineteen ninety eight, So we've got the first nine seasons
- 1:05:12out right Channel ten. They've come to you, Andy, we need a
- 1:05:15five episodes Simpsons marathons for Friday Night. What episodes be picking? So this
- 1:05:19is this look given when you ask me the question earlier. I've had a
- 1:05:25bit of a think, so this could be interchangeable, but I've actually jotted
- 1:05:29some down, so I guess whether you want to call this an episode or
- 1:05:32not. But the twenty two short films about that's my favorite episode of all
- 1:05:35time. I always say that perfectly encapsulates everything about Springfield. It's just for
- 1:05:40me, those little bite sized stories. Yeah, and even from a meme
- 1:05:46perspective, how memorable that episode is next level? So absolutely that. Okay,
- 1:05:53so the City of New York and Homer, that one resonates with me.
- 1:05:58I do enjoy. There's a certain parts and that this I even just
- 1:06:01the very last scene of when Lisa is like can we come back? And
- 1:06:08and this shits copping in. It's just something that you also just you remember
- 1:06:11watching at the time as well. They always had that connection as well.
- 1:06:14Yeah. So another one would be Treehouse of Horror five. Five is always
- 1:06:17the favorite, isn't it? Look it is? But for me, like
- 1:06:21there's it's justly you know, rational, like I can rationalize why without you
- 1:06:27know, having much disagreement. I'd say, just you know that that episode
- 1:06:30as far as me wise, as well, for me, one that I
- 1:06:35you know, I've always loved I love Homer Goes to College. I absolutely
- 1:06:40love that episode and some like I guess special mentions as well, like Brother
- 1:06:45from the Same Planet, Homer bad Man, Marge being not Proud. I
- 1:06:49think that there's everyone ending besides the Maggie makes three ending that's going to make
- 1:06:54me cry. It's Marge be not Proud. Yeah, that for me just
- 1:06:58hits different notes as far as humor, and you know, it's just yeah,
- 1:07:01it's so. I mean that list could, I'm sure for yourself,
- 1:07:06could be interchangeable on any given day, but just off the top of my
- 1:07:11head, those were, you know, some that I'd be like, yep,
- 1:07:14you know, there's there's there's some sentimental stuff in there, there's some
- 1:07:16absolutely hilarious and kind of like you said with the twenty two short films,
- 1:07:19like everything in between. So I think that kind of captures and I think
- 1:07:25that that pretty much has an episode from I think season four, six,
- 1:07:29nine seven. So it come with the good ones. Yeah, pretty good
- 1:07:32mix. Yeah, yeah, yeah, there we go. All right,
- 1:07:34Andy Kate, thank you so much for joining us here. It's been a
- 1:07:36pleasure to finally catch up with you. Yeah, man, thank you so
- 1:07:40much for having me Like, it's good, it's good just to you know,
- 1:07:43have a chat. Kind of Well, it's good because I've just started
- 1:07:45this second because we did two podcasts a week. Now we do the reviews
- 1:07:48and it's like season eighteen. I'm like, yeah, people aren't as interested
- 1:07:50in reviews anymore. And the reason I started this show was to just chat
- 1:07:55with people about the Simpsons. And like I've seen like I've seen your name
- 1:07:58and I've shared your memes for seventy years. I'm like, fuck, just
- 1:08:00talk to the guy. I appreciate it, man, Like I you know,
- 1:08:03I you know, I'm always I think I'm a very you know,
- 1:08:09pretty chilled guy man who's always happy to chat. And anyone who actually knows
- 1:08:13me knows that. Like, man, I'm not anyone who's ever started you
- 1:08:16know, shit, I'm not that kind of guy. I've copped a lot
- 1:08:19of shit. But man, I think, as as I said, it's
- 1:08:23just kind of sometimes is the nature of having maybe memes that are popular.
- 1:08:28I guess, like, you know, you can't please everyone. Some people
- 1:08:30will just get pissed off, and some people will like the hate. But
- 1:08:34as I said, man, at the end of the day, the positive
- 1:08:39stuff has always outweighed the negative and for that reason alone. Man, you
- 1:08:44know, I love doing what I do. It's it's just a fun hobby
- 1:08:46on the side, man. And I actually was. I actually remember when
- 1:08:50you reached out. I was like thinking to myself. I remember at one
- 1:08:55point a year or two ago, thinking, man, I'd love to even
- 1:08:57reach out to you guys and be like, hey, would you want to
- 1:08:59have a chat? One day I was like, nah, no, I
- 1:09:00can't ask them that that's something that they've but it's been a pleasure, man.
- 1:09:04I appreciate the offer. And it's good to meet you man and have
- 1:09:09a good chat. And let's plug that Instagram page one more time before you
- 1:09:11go. I have Simpsons meme factory. Yep. I probably, in hindsight
- 1:09:16should have got a bit more creative name. But change the name? Was
- 1:09:19it is that too late? Now? You keep it? I reckon I
- 1:09:21can. I'm pretty sure I could change it, but I think I do
- 1:09:24think it fits though, right Simpsons mean factory. Well, look, I
- 1:09:29mean I make them enough to feel like it's a factory. You know that
- 1:09:32it's it's you know. And I wasn't sure at the time whether certain names
- 1:09:38would be like, you know, a strike because you use them, But
- 1:09:42nah, I lostarted looking at other pages and the hundreds have used the Simpsons
- 1:09:45like I literally didn't give it much thought and I just thought, I make
- 1:09:49so many bloody damn memes, I might as well just put them on my
- 1:09:53Instagram. And yeah, it's kind of just you know what's growing to like
- 1:09:56nearly seventy thousand followers now just about yes, it's going really well. Make
- 1:10:00sure guys that you follow that page for your Simpsons meme Shenanigan's Yeah, once
- 1:10:02again, it's been an absolute pleasure and all the best with your Symptons Meme
- 1:10:05Factory. Thanks brother, I'm sure you'll see some more bangers coming up.
