- 0:00All right, Dylan, I forget what episode of Turn Back the Clock.
- 0:03This is it. It's in the 40s.
- 0:05But more importantly, right now this is number one on the sports
- 0:09card Clubhouse podcast network, Turn Back the Clock, first
- 0:13episode there. How we doing?
- 0:15I'm doing excellent. I'm really excited to hang out
- 0:19with you, Adam, Talk some cards and talk whatever we talked
- 0:22about tonight. Yeah, I got some fun, fun little
- 0:25topics here. We're going to probably go for
- 0:2730 to 45 minutes. I got some interesting opinion
- 0:30based stuff that I'm I want to get your thoughts on.
- 0:33I'll give my thoughts on. I do want to do a shout out that
- 0:37I don't know. Did you happen to watch today is
- 0:40Thursday? This video will probably be
- 0:42coming out on Friday tomorrow. Did you watch Shane Shoebox
- 0:45Shoebox Legends video from today?
- 0:47Best best video I love Shane put his put some words out and his
- 0:52opinions out and it was from the heart.
- 0:56I I made a post right when he I got up like 4 morning to my arm
- 0:59and man I was blown away. Yeah, I, I texted him I, I love
- 1:05the video. I mean, I, I, I, Shane's our
- 1:06friend, so I, I like all his videos, but this one, I really
- 1:10liked his psychology about everything he was talking about.
- 1:14And it really, he made such a good point where he was talking.
- 1:17I, I'm going to put a link to that video in the in this one.
- 1:20I recommend everyone watch it if they haven't.
- 1:22But he made such a good point that even if you're not into
- 1:26like following the value of your collection, you know, once you
- 1:28buy a card, a lot of people don't care what it's what it's
- 1:31worth or what it becomes. And I understand that.
- 1:33I've been there. But in a market like this, if
- 1:37you're trying to improve your collection, it does actually
- 1:39benefit you to keep an eye on certain cards.
- 1:41Because I can tell you there's been situations where I didn't
- 1:44know a card I had in my collection, like skyrocketed in
- 1:47value and I maybe missed a window here and there where I I
- 1:50might have sold it or, but I ended up not selling it, or
- 1:53maybe I could have downgraded it.
- 1:54So I thought he made a great point of as to the value of even
- 1:59if you're not always interested in, it does help you keep an eye
- 2:02on things sometimes in in case you might want to, you know,
- 2:05take some money off the table and put it into something
- 2:07different. Dude, yeah, he nailed it.
- 2:10And he doesn't do that many, if ever, like, opinionated from the
- 2:14heart videos on subjects like that.
- 2:18And to me, when he speaks, I listen because he's so
- 2:21knowledgeable in this hobby. And the way he talked about how
- 2:25some of his cards that he bought in the past that no one
- 2:27collected have become worth so much.
- 2:30How much money is sitting there? Free money that you can apply to
- 2:36your collection today. And it really hit the spot for
- 2:39me too because me and him text like you too.
- 2:42And and I've been looking at my cards a lot differently too.
- 2:45Now I'm not a card ladder guy. I don't want to follow the
- 2:49track. I don't ever want to look at my
- 2:51collection, click a button and say it's worth 20,000 today and
- 2:5610,000 tomorrow and 30,000 next day.
- 2:58That's for my stock account. I don't want that in my baseball
- 3:02cards. I will never use a company like
- 3:03card ladder. I mean never say never, but I do
- 3:06text sometimes I'll text you like hey can you give me a comp
- 3:09for this? I don't know what it is but to
- 3:12me I don't want that to happen. But I definitely pay attention
- 3:16to value for the exact reason Shane's talking.
- 3:19Every once in a while you go through your cards and I have
- 3:22like a 1951 tops worn spawn in apsa 8 on my wall.
- 3:28An old cert. Why on earth do I need APSA 8
- 3:321951 tops worn spawn that has rounded corners when I have twos
- 3:38that look exactly the same? So I see an extra $350.00 in
- 3:44that card that I can put towards another card, and I don't want
- 3:48all that money sunk into a worn spawn 51 tops anyways.
- 3:52And I bought that so long ago, probably for less than $100.
- 3:57It's just nice to know that. But you know, I don't need card
- 4:01ladder. Tell me that, but I get it why
- 4:04people use that because I would get notices probably across my
- 4:08board right like oh that card too.
- 4:10Wow, I could do that with that one.
- 4:12I could. I mean I thought about doing it
- 4:13with the 2001. I have a 2001 tops traded right
- 4:17here. Gold eat your own pool holes and
- 4:20apsa 9, I think skyrocketed in value.
- 4:23I've thought about taking that money, you know, selling it,
- 4:26buying an 8, take an extra 2 grand, buying that, buying an 8
- 4:30back and having two extra $1000 to spend.
- 4:33That runs through my head. I'm not going to do that with
- 4:35that card, but I am going to do with the spawn and I have a huge
- 4:38stack of others. So I was intrigued by that video
- 4:41and I think you you nailed it on the ad.
- 4:43I'm glad you. I'm glad you brought that up.
- 4:45Yeah, and, and specifically too, I didn't mention this, but he,
- 4:47when he was talking about, you know, cards that he hadn't
- 4:49looked at in forever, you know, so I thought that that hit home
- 4:52with me too, because I have, I have those two where it's like,
- 4:54I mean, you got this awesome wall there where you look at a
- 4:56lot of your cards. I have cards that I, I don't
- 5:00look at really, you know, so that that really struck A chord
- 5:02too. And especially if they've gone
- 5:03up a lot in value, if I'm not looking at them and I've gone up
- 5:06a lot in value, it's, it's, it's good to know.
- 5:08And I, I do like card ladder. I have to admit, I, I like not
- 5:12so much of like what's the total value of my collection that that
- 5:15has that feature, but it does have a lot of other collector
- 5:18features, which I really, I really like it.
- 5:20I'm having some fun with it so. Well, I know that you do.
- 5:23You know, you have all your images in one location.
- 5:27All the lists are, I think it's spectacular.
- 5:29And if I could click, you know, click my finger and I had all
- 5:32the images up and everything, I would use that.
- 5:35If I didn't see the values, I really don't want to see the
- 5:38values change on a daily basis. It it would mess with my mind
- 5:43too much where I would, the opposite would happen to me.
- 5:46I would see a card and be like, man, maybe I should sell that
- 5:49right now. I don't want to time the market
- 5:52on my baseball cards. Then you can.
- 5:54Turn that feature off too just so good they did that because
- 5:58you're you're not alone with that you know a lot of people
- 6:00don't want to get an e-mail everyday or look at and and see
- 6:03Oh my value went up or down yeah so that's that's a nice part is
- 6:06you can customize it however you'd want to use it basically
- 6:08that's. Pretty interesting, you know?
- 6:10See, that's why I never say never, you know?
- 6:12I have a. More.
- 6:14Next, I just have a couple quick things that I got to make.
- 6:16Obviously, you know, like I mentioned, this is on the Sports
- 6:19Card Clubhouse Network, the first podcast ever on the
- 6:22network Surface issues with Mike and Greg.
- 6:26There's been 2 episodes out so far of that.
- 6:28And in episode 2, you were mentioned by Mike.
- 6:31I have to, I have to mention this.
- 6:34I don't. Did you hear the pie?
- 6:35I could not believe this. Mike couldn't remember and he
- 6:37was serious. He couldn't remember if you like
- 6:40centered cards or don't like centered cards.
- 6:42And Greg was surprised as well. Mike, if you watch this, which I
- 6:46think you might, what's going on, man?
- 6:48Yeah. How can you not know if Dylan
- 6:50like centered cards? Like everyone knows that man.
- 6:52Here's the best part about Mike in that story.
- 6:55I mean, Mike watches any of my videos.
- 6:57I love Mike. He's an awesome guy.
- 6:58But we were at the National like a year ago.
- 7:03We were both hunting for the 1948, Oh no, 1941 play ball.
- 7:08Ted Williams. I had seen a couple and he came
- 7:10up to me. I ran into him and and I go, he
- 7:13said, oh, have you seen any of those?
- 7:14And I go, yeah, there's one over there, but it's too far off
- 7:17centered for my for my taste, too far off centered.
- 7:19I told him he went over there and bought it.
- 7:23So I know he he, he thinks he's a centering guy.
- 7:28He's not as crazy as me. I'm a full blown centering guy.
- 7:32I didn't buy that copy because it wasn't dead centered so.
- 7:35I I thought everyone knew you were a centering guy.
- 7:38Me. Too.
- 7:38I was. I was he.
- 7:39He knew you were like a something guy.
- 7:41You were known for something, but he wasn't sure if it was off
- 7:43centered or said in a in a parallel universe.
- 7:46In a parallel universe, Dylan's like an off centered guy.
- 7:49Like he's he. He sold all the centered cards
- 7:51and he's going after the the miscut cards.
- 7:54So good. All right, next, the next quick
- 7:56point too. They mentioned their favorite or
- 7:59or least favorite, a favorite bottled water and they Mike
- 8:04wasn't familiar with Arrowhead water And because it's a when I
- 8:07lived in Arizona, notoriously it was terrible.
- 8:10Arrowhead water was like one out of every two bottles.
- 8:14You get to be open it up and it smells like a sewer.
- 8:16Horrible. I don't know how they.
- 8:18I don't understand how anyone drinks that stuff.
- 8:20When Greg said that, I had that in my head.
- 8:23I go he's got tell me Arrowhead, say Arrowhead, how is how can
- 8:27anyone drink that crap? Bad, bad water.
- 8:31I don't know how they get away with putting it out still, I
- 8:33don't know who's buying it. And really, guys, you know, we
- 8:36shouldn't be drinking any bottled water.
- 8:37Plastic is not good for us, right?
- 8:39We should be drinking out of a glass glass bottle or one of
- 8:42those like, you know, safe things, filtered water.
- 8:44But that's my take on water. But yeah, there you go.
- 8:48All right, the next next quick thing I wanted to get your
- 8:50opinion on. So you know, this is gonna be
- 8:54going out as a podcast. It will also be going out on the
- 8:58YouTube channel too, Sports Card Clubhouse, but it will be going
- 9:00out on the podcast. First, I want to get your
- 9:03thoughts. I, I was listening to sports
- 9:05card dad had Jeff Wilson on his channel recently and Jeff Jeff
- 9:10was saying how they put almost no thought or effort into their
- 9:14podcast, sports card investor podcast.
- 9:16All their, you know, marketing and attention and everything
- 9:19goes towards the YouTube channel.
- 9:21And you know, part of his reasoning was it's just such a
- 9:24small podcast audience in his opinion, along with other
- 9:29things. But what do you, what do you, I
- 9:30want to get your take on that because when I first met you,
- 9:33you were always talking about how you were always a podcast
- 9:36guy. And I was too, before I ever got
- 9:38on YouTube. Here I was.
- 9:40I never never really use YouTube that much at all, but I did
- 9:44listen a ton of podcasts and I still do.
- 9:46So I've, I've always kind of been a podcast first guy.
- 9:49What do you? What's your take on that?
- 9:51I take it is that the audience that watches Jeff Wilson is a
- 9:56younger audience and I think the younger crowd wants the visuals,
- 10:00wants, wants the hoopla, wants all that.
- 10:05And I think the older crowd like us in our 40 sums, you know, we,
- 10:09I'm a listener like put it on, put put my headphones in and get
- 10:15other stuff done while I'm listening to people talk about
- 10:19cards. So like when Greg does his
- 10:22videos, he does like 7 videos a week.
- 10:25I can, I listen to every single one because I would rather
- 10:29listen to someone talk about baseball cards.
- 10:33Even though I know Greg's position on so many things, I'm
- 10:36still intrigued by it. So I, I just think the podcast
- 10:40thing is just kind of a different generation possibly.
- 10:44I mean, I could be wrong there, but it's also, I don't know how
- 10:47much money he could possibly make making a podcast.
- 10:50So he, you know, he's getting paid by YouTube.
- 10:53I don't know anything behind it, but for me with YouTube, I'm a
- 10:57long format guy. I do not like short videos.
- 11:01You know, I don't like short, short car videos, OK, You know,
- 11:05like 20 minutes. I like 20 minutes.
- 11:07I hate clicking on one and it's 5 minutes and then I got to go
- 11:10find something else. I want to sit in my card room
- 11:14and pop it on and just listen to people talk about cards, even if
- 11:18I don't even like what they're saying or they're talking about
- 11:21grading again. Everybody's all like everyone
- 11:24gets up in arms about, oh, they're talking about the same
- 11:28thing again. Of course we are.
- 11:30This is what we do. We love.
- 11:33I love to hear people's thoughts on grading, even if I've heard
- 11:37it 1000 times. I want to hear about, I appeal.
- 11:40I want to hear about this and this.
- 11:41And, and if I don't, I mean, it's just in my ear.
- 11:45I'm not wasting any of my time. It's just there.
- 11:47I don't have to like tune into every single word.
- 11:50I really find it fascinating. And a little side note, like
- 11:54I've read a couple of comments on Greg's channel is he's pretty
- 11:57big and he gets so much Flack from people like this.
- 12:02Again, why are you doing this? And I'm thinking in my head,
- 12:07it's his freaking channel. He can talk about anything you
- 12:10want until now. Anyone's going to get pissed off
- 12:13and leave comments in this message.
- 12:17I'm just telling you my thoughts and opinions.
- 12:19These are my personal thoughts and opinions.
- 12:21If you want to leave comments like that, that's that's fine.
- 12:24I just don't understand the point.
- 12:26If you, if I build something up and I spend three years and I do
- 12:31dedicate 10 hours a week, he's decadating probably 20 hours a
- 12:35week to something and he wants to talk about something.
- 12:39By all means, talk about anything you want.
- 12:42And then also side note, having your friends on your own channel
- 12:46and the same guys over and over again, Hallelujah, they are your
- 12:50friends. We all come on YouTube and we
- 12:53make little clicks, right? And they're not clicks that we
- 12:55don't want other people in, Not at all.
- 12:57I have new people that pop up in on YouTube and I become friends
- 13:02with them instantly because the way they collect or how they
- 13:05talk about cards or how their videos are.
- 13:08And I want to have those guys on my channel.
- 13:11I invite my friends on my channel because they're my
- 13:14friends. I'm not here to make $1,000,000.
- 13:16I'm here to hang out with my friends.
- 13:18So when I see comments like that as well, oh, same guys over and
- 13:23over. You know there is a place or
- 13:26collectors, if you reach out to them, you can go on their
- 13:29channel. You can be on any channel you
- 13:31want If you make that effort, if you start making your own videos
- 13:35and your own tag team like Jason everyday card collector as a
- 13:39buddy, he goes on and then he does it with Sammy and everyone
- 13:42has their little group. I don't want to have people on
- 13:45the show. Like I'm not going to invite
- 13:47people on my live stream. I have no idea who they are.
- 13:50I want to talk to my friend. So I get that side of it too and
- 13:54it just bothers me that everyone just gangs up on guys like Gray
- 13:59or guys that have over seems like over 5000 followers.
- 14:03I don't get those type of things on mine, but he gets them and it
- 14:07just it doesn't make sense in my own brain.
- 14:10I don't get it. I I hear what you're saying and
- 14:14so wait a minute, you're saying you don't like my 5 or 8 minute
- 14:16videos that I do once a month where I you know what?
- 14:19I'm like, come on, dude. Well, here's here's the thing,
- 14:22here's the thing that this This is why I love doing this with
- 14:25you is cuz I could talk to you for hours, man, you know, but
- 14:29when I'm on by myself, I love you.
- 14:32Could you could go for an hour by yourself or two hours by
- 14:35yourself? And you're great at it.
- 14:37And me, I just don't, I don't know, I, when I'm, when I'm just
- 14:40there by myself, I have a hard time and I'm just like, that's
- 14:43it after 8 minutes. But so I, I guess I just like
- 14:46talking with, you know, my, like you said, my friends like you.
- 14:49And maybe that's why the podcast thing is, is a good fit for me
- 14:54because a lot of those are going to be conversations, you know,
- 14:56and I kind of like that. But I, I hear what you're saying
- 14:59and with the podcast thing, you know, 'cause that's, I think
- 15:03during COVID when everyone was at home, right?
- 15:05And you could sit at home and watch YouTube videos more than a
- 15:09lot of people can now. A lot of people now it's kind of
- 15:11like back to the old days where they're driving to work.
- 15:14So they're trying to listen to something.
- 15:15You can't really watch it while you're driving.
- 15:17Or, you know, if you squeeze in some time, you know, you
- 15:21generally can squeeze in a podcast if you're mowing the
- 15:23lawn or something like that. So I think you're right.
- 15:26I think it has a lot to do with the age range.
- 15:28I'm thinking, you know, I don't know, I'm sure there's numbers
- 15:30out there of the the prime podcast age range where maybe
- 15:33it's like, you know, 40 to 55 or something like that.
- 15:37You know, you see like the Joe Rogan podcast where he's got
- 15:40millions and millions. So there's definitely people who
- 15:42listen to podcast. I think it's just, yeah, that
- 15:44maybe the the younger crowd hasn't gone into the podcast
- 15:49realm as much yet. Then you know, the 20 somethings
- 15:52or whatever that more so than like the 40 somethings where
- 15:56podcast might be more up our alley based on our lifestyle and
- 15:59all the things we're doing throughout the day.
- 16:01Yeah, and, and you know, a lot of us, you know, 40 thumbs have
- 16:05been collecting cards a long time.
- 16:07So you don't need to see every single card.
- 16:09We don't need to watch every video.
- 16:11We, we know what they're talking about.
- 16:12We know exactly what card they're Speaking of and we can
- 16:15picture it. So a lot of that can go into it
- 16:17as well. Well, that's a perfect lead into
- 16:20my next question for you because this this has kind of been a
- 16:22topic I've seen in a few videos recently.
- 16:24I want to get your take. What is, in your opinion, what's
- 16:27the reason why videos were on YouTube, Sports card YouTube
- 16:32videos where someone is talking about their collection, you
- 16:37know, they, they may be showing cards, but even ones where
- 16:39they're just talking about like for example, I went on Victor's,
- 16:44the rookie card specialist channel and we did a video and
- 16:48it was a longer video. It was probably close to an
- 16:50hour. So, you know, those tend to
- 16:51obviously not get as many views and and things like that as as
- 16:55much attention as like a video that might be 12 minutes or 15
- 16:58minutes based on the algorithm and people's attention spans.
- 17:01But you know, we talked about my collection, you know, my Tom
- 17:04Brady collection and my complete run of his rookie cards.
- 17:07And I don't know how many views it got maybe a few hundred
- 17:10couple 100 views, right. And that and that's pretty
- 17:12standard. That's I think what you expect
- 17:13when you make a video like that where it's like a deep dive
- 17:16where you talk about your collection or even a video where
- 17:18you're just showing pickups or a big pickup.
- 17:20Those don't get nearly as many views as a video where someone's
- 17:25talking about the hobby or talking about investing or
- 17:29opinions on the hobby. A rant, so to speak.
- 17:33When I first got onto YouTube, a lot of people were saying it's
- 17:36all about the cards. People are here for the cards,
- 17:39they want to see the cards, but yet the numbers don't back that
- 17:43up. So what?
- 17:44What do we make of this? I mean, it's kind of simple.
- 17:48It it's the same thing goes back to like the podcast.
- 17:50You like to watch a video showing cards.
- 17:54Like that's what I do on my my channel.
- 17:56You know, I'm not getting thousands of views on my show
- 17:59and tells. It's more for me less than it is
- 18:03for people watching. I just enjoy the show and tell
- 18:07aspect. And I think for us collectors,
- 18:10there's like there's a certain number of guys that I really
- 18:12want them to watch my channel because they're my good friends
- 18:17and they collect like me and we root for each other's things.
- 18:20So you have those little core, you have the little core
- 18:23audience that comes and watches, but the rest, you know, you can
- 18:27just pop it in your headphones and you don't have to watch.
- 18:30And everyone always talks about like when we do these lives and
- 18:33everyone's like in the chat, show a card already show a card.
- 18:37We don't even care because we can't even see the damn card,
- 18:40especially if I'm doing the video because I'm all blurry.
- 18:43It's I like showing cards. That's the funnest part about
- 18:47it. As a as someone who's on a show,
- 18:50I love showing my collection, but I can talk about it just as
- 18:55easily and it's just as effective and more so because
- 18:58you can just listen to it. Everybody knows what these cards
- 19:01look like and I can discuss the I appeal.
- 19:04That's why I like when I'll do a video.
- 19:06I dive really deep into every aspect of the card.
- 19:09So if you are listening and you choose to listen, you can listen
- 19:13and you can just get just as much out of it.
- 19:16It's one of those things, videos showing cards, you have to sit
- 19:19there and you have to watch where when you're just talking
- 19:23you can just pop it in your head and listen.
- 19:25So it's an easier listen then it's more work required for
- 19:28those videos where it's a visual video where you got to actually
- 19:30watch it. Now let me take a step further
- 19:33because I totally agree with you.
- 19:34I, I watch all your videos and I watch the ones where you're
- 19:39showing a pickup. I am interested in what you're
- 19:41picking up. I, I like to see what you're
- 19:43doing with your collection because I'm your friend.
- 19:45Now, do you think it's that? Do you think it's that if you're
- 19:49friends with someone, you're interested in what they're doing
- 19:51their collection? But let's say someone stumbles
- 19:53upon a video of me showing my Tom Brady collection or you
- 19:57showing you know your Japanese baseball card pickups if they
- 20:00don't know us. And they not our friends, should
- 20:03they even care? Like why would they?
- 20:05They I could see them caring about opinions, right, because
- 20:07it's interesting. But if they don't know us from
- 20:10it, from Adam, right? Why would they care about what
- 20:14we're doing with our collection? Is that is that kind of the root
- 20:16of why those views don't show up as much as the other type of
- 20:20videos? Yeah, and and in in all reality,
- 20:23I mean, so I go through phases, right?
- 20:26Sometimes I want to find little videos, 20 minute long videos
- 20:31and watch people that I, you know, I'm not super close with,
- 20:36but I enjoy how they talk about each card they get.
- 20:41So it all comes down to whether the guy is just going this is a
- 20:441960 tops Roberto Clemente, this is a 1972 top so and so, or a
- 20:52guy who takes the card and and talks about it.
- 20:57Why did he buy this card? Why, why he that entered his
- 21:01collection? Then I'm intrigued and I want to
- 21:04look at that card. It wasn't the I appeal.
- 21:06Is that why he bought it or was it because it fit his set?
- 21:09That's what's interesting to me and how the personality of the
- 21:13person is the most important thing, right?
- 21:15I, I don't want to just have a, you know, blah, blah, blah.
- 21:20I want someone excited. I want an energetic person.
- 21:24I want them to just talk deeply. They don't have to talk fast
- 21:28like me. They can talk like Eric, those
- 21:30backpages, slow, steady, precise, they know what they're
- 21:34talking about. I love that stuff.
- 21:37I just want to feel the passion and it all comes down to what
- 21:42mood I'm in when I watch a video.
- 21:44Do I want to watch a video and watch somebody share their cards
- 21:48or do I want to listen to someone talk about their cards?
- 21:53It's kind of kind of like that, you know, in opinion videos, we
- 21:57all want to watch a train wreck. I say dumb things all the time.
- 21:59I know a lot of people probably watch, you know, listen to turn
- 22:03back the Clock just to hear me say something stupid.
- 22:05So it's, it's one of those things, right?
- 22:07Well, and you know, I will say what's interesting because I've
- 22:09done both type of videos, you know, video where I talk about
- 22:13the hobby, give opinion, stuff like that, and those will get
- 22:15more views. But then when I'll do a video
- 22:17where it's like a deep dive on a, you know, a 90s parallel or
- 22:21I'll, I'll talk about a Tom Brady card or, or, you know,
- 22:24it's more of a deep dive, smaller views, smaller audience,
- 22:27But I tend to get more people reaching out to me, like
- 22:30messages on Instagram that connect over, Hey, I love that
- 22:34card too. Or I was waiting for someone to
- 22:36talk about that. You know, maybe you'll get five
- 22:38of those, whereas you do a broader video and you get more
- 22:41views in this comments, but the comments kind of aren't as
- 22:44connecting. You know, it's more of just like
- 22:46negative or positive, but like I'll get actually people
- 22:48reaching out to me when I get real specific about Pacific
- 22:52cards, stuff like that, where it's like, you know, where
- 22:54there's a cult following of those type of things.
- 22:56So I think, I think you can connect with people in different
- 23:00ways, even with a, with a, you know, smaller video or a more
- 23:04deep dive than even some of those view, you know, the videos
- 23:08that might get over 1000 views. You might not, you know, you
- 23:12might not connect with people as you would with a a, you know,
- 23:15more specific type video. Yeah, and I want to give some
- 23:18encouragement out to guys that we all started somewhere on
- 23:22YouTube. I started with 0 followers.
- 23:25I didn't plan on growing fast or slow.
- 23:28That wasn't my intention. My intention on my very first
- 23:32video was I wanted to put my opinions out in the card world
- 23:36I've been in my whole life. That's why I did it and I wanted
- 23:39to share my collection. I didn't know if people were
- 23:41going to like my videos or not. Like, and the friends I've made,
- 23:45those are the ones, you know, those are like my core little
- 23:48group. But I'm friend with everyone in
- 23:50the, in the space. But it's like one of those
- 23:53things. So when a new guy comes along
- 23:55and they've been doing it for like 6 months and I could
- 23:58understand why they, you know, they'll get 50 views.
- 24:01We all started that way. I didn't get thousands of views
- 24:04out of the gate or 100 views out of the gate.
- 24:07And it's not about that. You're never going to make money
- 24:10making sports card content. It's not going to happen.
- 24:14Maybe for the very exclusive, whatever.
- 24:16I don't even know if it's possible to really make it.
- 24:19Like maybe daddy makes some money because he's selling like
- 24:22what? He's selling like cereal bars
- 24:24now or something. Or dad what?
- 24:27Daddy's selling cereal bars. I see.
- 24:29I think it's magic spoon magic spoon serial.
- 24:33I got to say I like I, I, I I like Dustin.
- 24:36I've I watched a video just today.
- 24:38He he seems like a guy that, you know, if I ever met him in
- 24:40person, we'd get along very well And he but you know, you got to
- 24:44you got to give him crap about doing magic spoon serial
- 24:46promotion. Good for him.
- 24:47Hey, good for you man. Yeah, exactly.
- 24:50But it's funny go that way. Yeah, so.
- 24:52The, you know, for the little, the, the smaller channels out
- 24:55there, if you want to build your channel up, there's a, there's a
- 24:58recipe for that. And if you want to put your
- 25:01opinion videos out there, they will get it.
- 25:02They will get 1000 views. Jayhawker vintage Mike did a
- 25:07video, you know, it blew up. You can be a small channel and,
- 25:12and, and have like a normal 50 views.
- 25:15And if you want more views, do an opinion video, put your
- 25:18opinions out there. I want to hear them.
- 25:21Everybody wants to hear them. It doesn't matter you've been in
- 25:23the hobby for a week or 100 years.
- 25:26Opinion videos are really fun. So my encouragement to anyone
- 25:30who has a small channel and is depressed and bummed, do some
- 25:33opinion videos. Lash yourself out there, say
- 25:36some stupid stuff and you'll be up in the charts real quick.
- 25:40And you'll, you know, along the way you find your little core
- 25:42friends and invite them on your show and do collaborations.
- 25:45I love all the guys that come on and do collaborations like turn
- 25:48back the clock. It's fascinating to me.
- 25:52All the collectors talking about cards together.
- 25:55It's it's really awesome. Well, that's a perfect segue to
- 25:58my last point that I wanted to bring up to you and last
- 26:01question. So again, Surface Issues Episode
- 26:042, one of the topics was Greg was bringing up something that
- 26:08was in a group chat of ours where John Mangini was on
- 26:12another channel, professor sports cards and Greg was, you
- 26:16know, giving him jokingly, you know, all in good fun.
- 26:19He was he was saying, I think in the video John said, you know, I
- 26:23don't care what other people do, you know, it doesn't matter to
- 26:25me how other people do it. But then in the same video, John
- 26:27was, you know, giving his opinion, giving his opinion on
- 26:30breaking and other other aspects of the hobby.
- 26:32So, and we all do that. Is it in your opinion, what
- 26:37what's your breakdown of when we give opinions on, you know, ways
- 26:41to collect or grading or whatever it might be in the
- 26:45hobby? Whenever you Give your opinion
- 26:47is, is that being taken the wrong way sometimes?
- 26:51Are people taking that and saying, well, they're looking
- 26:54down on me if I do that or they, they think that I'm doing it
- 26:59wrong? Is it, is it basically judging
- 27:02someone if you give an opinion on it or are we just saying it's
- 27:06not for me? Or is there is there a way to
- 27:07say it where you can kind of make everyone happy?
- 27:11What do you think? You know, you got to do the the
- 27:13old Greg spiel and put a long caveat before you speak on these
- 27:18podcasts and in the hobby, you have to clarify that these are
- 27:22my opinions. We used to do that all the time.
- 27:23I would always say I'm less, I'm less scared anymore.
- 27:27Like, if you don't know they're my opinions by now, then I'm
- 27:31sorry. But when I say centered cards
- 27:34are the future and the rarest things in tops that you can
- 27:38find, it's not the registration, it's not anything else.
- 27:41To me, it's more than an opinion, it's fact.
- 27:44Why? Because I've done the process of
- 27:47trying to find these cards and that's the hardest thing to
- 27:50find. I don't need all this data like
- 27:52Greg and all this stuff to figure that out.
- 27:54To me, it's fact. But to you guys, it should be
- 27:57opinions and I'm not telling you that your off center cards are
- 28:02useless to you. You should be thanking me for
- 28:05pumping up the centered cards and making them more expensive
- 28:09because all the off center cards are getting a lot cheaper for
- 28:11you. So you can.
- 28:13You can get mad at anyones opinion but it's opinions that's
- 28:17the whole point of this. When I share a printing plate
- 28:21and I say this is the greatest thing in the world, these should
- 28:23be worth a fortune man. It's not like a pump and dump
- 28:25scheme. I'm telling you what my thoughts
- 28:27are on the future of the cards. I'm telling you my Japanese
- 28:30baseball cards are the future. These things have a whole way
- 28:33ramp to go up in value. They're so astronomically low.
- 28:37This is my opinion. This is how I'm going about it.
- 28:41You can agree or disagree, but I'm going to still put it out
- 28:45there and you're not wrong if you have a different opinion,
- 28:48you're just wrong to me. To me, you're totally doing it
- 28:51wrong. But I'm collecting for myself.
- 28:54I have the greatest collection in the whole world.
- 28:55Why? Because I made it for myself.
- 28:58I didn't make it for you. I didn't make it for this guy.
- 29:00This is my collection. You know it that it always
- 29:04stands back down to create what you want in your collection.
- 29:09It doesn't matter what anyone else does, but you are also
- 29:12allowed to listen two opinions and consider those opinions and
- 29:18you're allowed to change your opinions.
- 29:20We don't need to put our head in the stand and say no, never
- 29:23going to do that. Never going to believe that
- 29:26you're allowed to. And that's why I like Greg.
- 29:28He beats the dead horse till The thing is dead about.
- 29:31You know, the I appeal in the grading system, how it's flawed
- 29:36and how the old, you know, the, some of the new force are like
- 29:40the old sevens. And it took me a long time to
- 29:43kind of come to terms with that myself, but I it taught me to
- 29:47look at my cards a little different way too, and, and it's
- 29:50good. So those are that's my thought
- 29:53about opinions, man. Their opinions.
- 29:54But they're facts in my brain when I say my opinions until
- 29:59otherwise I change my opinion. It's kind of like, it's kind of
- 30:02like politics and what everyone's kind of trying to do
- 30:05now, right? It's like, all right, you Dylan,
- 30:07you could go on a video and say I think PSA eights that are off
- 30:12centered are ugly cards it or I think they're bad purchases.
- 30:16I don't I don't think they're smart.
- 30:17I think it's a a waste of money where you could spend on other
- 30:20cards. You could say something like
- 30:21that, which is a heavy opinion, right.
- 30:23And then if someone's watching that, who can, who has those
- 30:26type of cards in their collection, they spent good
- 30:29money on them, but they don't get bothered by bad centering.
- 30:32They can say, you know what? Dylan thinks my cards maybe not
- 30:35for him or they might be ugly, but I still like Dylan, right.
- 30:38Like we, we don't have to not like each other because we like
- 30:41certain things differently, you know, in in the hobby.
- 30:44So I think it's some similarity there.
- 30:46And I understand why people, when you give an opinion on
- 30:49something, if you know, I've, I've heard people say things
- 30:51where they're like, I, I, I can't come up with a perfect
- 30:54example right now, but I've heard give people give opinions
- 30:57on videos where I go, oh man. And it like kind of hurt my
- 31:00feelings at first where I was like, man, I got cards like that
- 31:02or I collect that type of card. But then I'm like, So what, Who
- 31:06cares? You know, like, I still like
- 31:08this person, you know, they seem like a cool person.
- 31:10They don't have to like my collection.
- 31:11It's, it's all good. So it's kind of just getting
- 31:13over that at 1st and not getting offended by by these type of
- 31:17things. But I understand why people can
- 31:20take offense to it at first. But maybe the longer we do,
- 31:24it'll be easier and easier to just all get along.
- 31:26Yeah, let me, let me, let me touch base on that because
- 31:30that's really important. Like when I first got on here
- 31:33and I was talking about centering, I'll bring up an
- 31:37experience that I had that I felt it felt gross to me.
- 31:40And then I'll bring up an another experience where I made
- 31:43other people feel unwelcome or gross to equal it out.
- 31:48I was on a live and everybody was on there and a gentleman who
- 31:52was very respected. And I love the guy.
- 31:54I've met him in the flesh, Nicest human being ever.
- 31:57If you were, I don't want to bring his name up because
- 31:59there's no need. But in the live, he said if
- 32:03anyone thinks that we never looked at eye appeal and
- 32:06centering in the past, I don't think they've collected.
- 32:09I don't think they've been collecting as long as they've
- 32:11said. And I felt pointed at and I was
- 32:15said by many people in the chat and over the phone that, man,
- 32:19that was rough. That was tough, Dylan.
- 32:21And I was new at YouTube, right? So it did hurt because I was
- 32:26putting my opinion out there three years ago about the
- 32:28centering thing, Like I was a crazy person, right?
- 32:30Selling all these off centered stuff, all the higher grades.
- 32:33And so I was really putting myself out there.
- 32:35So I, I felt pointed at and I, I called the individual and we
- 32:40talked and I shouldn't have taken offense to that because he
- 32:44was just he, even if he, even if he had me in his brain, it
- 32:49doesn't mean he was right about that.
- 32:52I didn't need to defend myself and I shouldn't have gotten butt
- 32:55hurt over that. And now let me take it another
- 32:57step forward where another experience John 380's kid was
- 33:02talking crap on rookie cards. I felt like I was pointed out.
- 33:06That's me, another one of my dumb like I shouldn't.
- 33:10I was like, why did I take offense to that?
- 33:12John? I I know John so much more now.
- 33:14He's just that's just John. You know, he's like, he's real,
- 33:18he's like me. We have our opinions and this is
- 33:19like fact, right? So he's talking about it.
- 33:22And then we talked over the phone.
- 33:24We're like best buds now. All good.
- 33:26Well, Fast forward to the video we did not that long ago where I
- 33:29talked about bringing your bag of money and going in there and
- 33:32just saying screw calm. So I got my bag of money, I'll
- 33:34buy any card I want. And that was my experience with
- 33:37these printing plates. And I was like, OK, I'm buying
- 33:39these things. I don't care.
- 33:41I got my bag of money. I'm just going to do it.
- 33:44And I know why people felt pointed at.
- 33:46At least one individual felt pointed at and he wasn't
- 33:50pointing. He didn't feel pointed at
- 33:51himself. He felt like I was pointing at
- 33:53other individuals. So I made two phone calls to the
- 33:56other individuals that I thought the person was pointing at.
- 33:59They didn't take any offense, cleared it up.
- 34:02But it's things like that that happen on YouTube.
- 34:05It happens with friends and it's we really have to be careful on
- 34:11how we take things in when people give their opinions
- 34:15because they are opinions. And it's one thing until you say
- 34:20the person's name and say you said this, this guy said this.
- 34:24I'm at that point where I can't, I don't really get it.
- 34:27I can't get offended anymore. I don't want to be that guy
- 34:29who's gets offended by things. I've learned over time that
- 34:34there's guys that love off centered stuff and we defend our
- 34:37own collections. If I'm a guy who was have all
- 34:40these old 8 dirt numbers and nine cert numbers and Greg's
- 34:46talking about how they're garbage now and they're they're
- 34:48fives and I and I'm telling them I think it's crazy they're
- 34:52spending five grand for a card that's uglier than my four that
- 34:55cost 100 bucks. It's the truth to me.
- 34:59But that guy has to defend his own collection.
- 35:02He spent a big amount of time and money on that collection.
- 35:05So I understand them really get an uproar about it.
- 35:09But you can do something about that.
- 35:11If you truly believe that you still those eights and nines are
- 35:14still going to be worth more in the future, then hold your
- 35:17ground. We could be totally wrong about
- 35:19this whole thing, but if for any reason you have any doubt, you
- 35:22can change your opinion and make a fortune off those and
- 35:27recollect them. So this hobby evolves and so
- 35:31does our relationships with these opinion videos and feel,
- 35:36you know, feeling pointed at when Victor, I'll bring up
- 35:38Victor. OK, when you're on with Victor,
- 35:41he said something on the lines of he said like I'm so sick of
- 35:45people saying these base cards are junk.
- 35:47You know, I'm like, I don't never actually, I actually heard
- 35:50that and I wrote them, you know, and I love Victor Kay.
- 35:52I have the utmost respect for Victor and what he does on his
- 35:56channel and his concentration on the rookie card.
- 35:59He had Bobby Burrell on his channel the other day.
- 36:01I listened to that. That was fantastic.
- 36:03Made so much sense to me. I've learned a lot from Victor
- 36:06in those rookie cards, whether my opinions are exactly aligned
- 36:09with him. No, but I've never heard anyone
- 36:12say these base cards are crap. But sometimes I feel like he's
- 36:15talking to me because I always say base cards are never going
- 36:19to go up in value and I believe that.
- 36:21I believe that since the day I got on YouTube.
- 36:23But I never understood why the Mike Trout base card was worth
- 36:26like 8 grand and then two grand. None of it made sense to me why
- 36:30Kendra V Junior's Indiana upper deck should be worth 50 bucks in
- 36:34all grades. All that doesn't make sense to
- 36:37me, but it doesn't mean I'm right.
- 36:38So I know I went off on a tangent, but we're allowed to
- 36:42poke, poke our opinions out and we shouldn't be getting, you
- 36:47know, RIP the part in the comments because we're, we're up
- 36:51here saying stuff and it's OK. And you can say it in the chat.
- 36:55You don't have to be so hardcore and and like mean about it.
- 36:58There's there's other ways to do it and you could build your own
- 37:00channel up and put opinions out of your own.
- 37:04Yeah, and it's funny about Victor because I think Victor
- 37:07gets a lot of kickback from not so much maybe our crowd on
- 37:12YouTube. I think he gets a lot of
- 37:13kickback from a lot of the, the modern crowd, you know, that
- 37:17really doesn't value the rookie card and they they throw the
- 37:20base cards in the trash, you know, and he get he gets, I
- 37:22think he gets a lot of a lot of feedback from that crowd.
- 37:25So that's I think that's probably where some of that
- 37:27comes from. Not necessarily like you or, or
- 37:29anyone in this crowd on YouTube, But you know, my last point I've
- 37:34I've heard you say this in the past.
- 37:36This was like a long time ago where you were talking about, I
- 37:39think you had like certain cards, maybe a Michael Jordan
- 37:41rookie card or some really big cards that have gotten a lot
- 37:46bigger. And I think I remember you
- 37:48saying like one of the reasons why you were always a maybe
- 37:51hesitant to hold on to those cards is 'cause you really you
- 37:54were collecting in a vacuum like like a lot of us.
- 37:58And you really weren't sure of like what the future held.
- 38:00Like is this card going to be even valuable in the future?
- 38:04We didn't, we didn't know, you know, I think with a lot of us,
- 38:08maybe the defensiveness of our collections and, and the way we
- 38:11go about the hobby, maybe a lot of that's rooted in a little bit
- 38:14of insecurity about the hobby, even though now it's very
- 38:17popular and everyone's very bold.
- 38:20Not everyone, but a lot of people are very bullish on the
- 38:22hobby long term. And there's big companies in it.
- 38:24There's a lot of marketing behind it.
- 38:26There's a good infrastructure there.
- 38:28That's pretty recent. You know, I think in the past, I
- 38:30mean, we lived through the junk wax era.
- 38:32We, we, we went through periods where it felt like we were the
- 38:36only ones doing this, right. So I think there's a lot of that
- 38:39out there where with people that are spending real money on their
- 38:43collections, you know, when they hear someone give an opinion
- 38:45that kind of contradicts what they've spent their money on,
- 38:49they can get defensive a little bit and can get maybe, you know,
- 38:52offended because they've spent a lot of money.
- 38:55And there's a maybe all of us have a little insecurity about
- 38:58what we're doing here, you know, spending some serious money on,
- 39:02on cardboard. So I, I've always kind of had
- 39:04that, that thought and even the companies up until recently now,
- 39:08I mean, these companies are really going after it fanatics
- 39:12and PSA and every, I mean, they're, there's big money at
- 39:14stake in big marketing dollars, real serious people at the helm
- 39:18that have a long history of success in whatever they try to
- 39:21do. But you know, up until like the
- 39:25last few years, really, the companies, in my opinion, in the
- 39:29hobby were kind of not real bullish on the hobby long term.
- 39:33I always it kind of felt like these companies were just just
- 39:36waiting for things to just crash again or, you know, completely
- 39:39go everything just go away. Like no one was really willing
- 39:42to invest heavily into their company.
- 39:44And then I think that's a lot of what you see with like old PSA
- 39:47labels and so forth. Even PSA back in the day, I
- 39:51don't think they were investing until the new leadership came
- 39:53in. I don't think they were really
- 39:55investing in their company and, and I don't know that that's
- 39:58just maybe going a little too deep into it, but that I've been
- 40:02thinking about that where now it's different, but people have
- 40:06been in a while. It's kind of like PTSD sometimes
- 40:09in the hobby. It's, it is, it was way scarier
- 40:12in the past 'cause there was no YouTube, there were no, you
- 40:16know, when I had those monster cards, I, it was like, I mean,
- 40:22they weren't monsters in there $500 cards back then.
- 40:25They were monsters for, you know, 1999, two, 1001.
- 40:29You know, I'm out of high school working full time.
- 40:32Like I told myself I'm going to buy all these goats.
- 40:35I'm going to buy every goat of every single sport.
- 40:38Gretzky rookies all the way across.
- 40:39I had a few Michael Jordan rookies, Nolan Ryan rookies, oh,
- 40:43you name it. If I would have kept, I mean,
- 40:46Kobe Bryant refractors in the 9 in 96, I had loads of this
- 40:50stuff. If I would have kept all those
- 40:52cards the whole time and never knew their value, I would have
- 40:57at least $2,000,000 worth of cards, you know, right now.
- 41:01So it's one of those things. But I was alone.
- 41:04You know, I'm thinking, man, who is some eventually you hold on,
- 41:09it's long enough and then they they stack up and these safes
- 41:12and you have like thousands and thousands and thousands of
- 41:14dollars. You know, especially back then
- 41:17as a young man, it got scary. And I'm like, gosh, man.
- 41:21So I put that money into stocks instead.
- 41:24And it's hard. When you when you don't know
- 41:25anyone else who is into cards. That's where I was a little over
- 41:304 years ago. I was literally like, I don't
- 41:33know one person who still buys cards or cares about cards.
- 41:37I know I do for some reason. But when you don't see anyone
- 41:39else out there and you don't have anyone to talk about,
- 41:41nothing to bounce off of, then you do.
- 41:43Yeah. You're just like, I don't know,
- 41:44maybe maybe it's kind of, I love these things, but I got to be
- 41:47careful I guess, because it could be good.
- 41:49It could be going to 0. Now with YouTube and social
- 41:51media, we have so much that we can see out there.
- 41:54We can see the National. I didn't even know the National
- 41:56was a thing until I got on YouTube.
- 41:58I never even heard of the National.
- 42:00So now that we see like there's 100,000 people at the National,
- 42:04I mean, it does give you more confidence.
- 42:06I think in like what we're doing, I think, you know.
- 42:09Absolutely, I have AI have no problem where say everything got
- 42:13cut in half. I'm not worried about the hobby
- 42:15at this point. There's there's Chris Sewell did
- 42:18a video today and and I am 100% in agreeance with him.
- 42:21There is more collectors today, full blown collectors.
- 42:24I don't care if you're a flipper or whatever.
- 42:26I'm talking if you're playing with cards in some way, shape or
- 42:30form, you're some sort of a collector for the most part.
- 42:33There's more collectors now than they've ever been in any time
- 42:36even during that 90s boom, in my opinion, of course.
- 42:41So it gives me confidence like, man, everything got cut in half.
- 42:45Give it another 20 years, we'll hit another boom time.
- 42:47And I think, man, I, I think we're in the still like 5th
- 42:51inning of this, of this hobby boom.
- 42:54I know I'm not talking prices necessarily, but hobby.
- 42:58Boom popularity. Yes, yes.
- 43:02Well, I think that's a great way to to end this one deal on a
- 43:04positive note, right? We're we're optimistic, we're
- 43:07hopeful, and I think we have good reason to be.
- 43:11So I want to leave it with this now.
- 43:13This video will go on YouTube. It it goes out on a podcast
- 43:16first. I know a lot of guys that may
- 43:18catch this on YouTube. They're not I've, I've heard
- 43:22from the people who have no clue how to listen to a podcast.
- 43:26So if you have one of those smartphones guys, you get an
- 43:28iPhone, just download Spotify or Apple.
- 43:31That's all you need one of those two, if not both, but all you
- 43:34need is one of them and look for the the sports card clubhouse.
- 43:38I'm going to put links in the video here.
- 43:40And I, you know, unless you have YouTube premium, which I do have
- 43:44YouTube premium. I've had it for a long time.
- 43:45I know you do, where it allows you to really listen to YouTube
- 43:48as a podcast. I know a lot of guys don't have
- 43:51it. You can't.
- 43:53It's really hard to like listen to a video like this.
- 43:56You're out, you know, mowing the lawn or whatever 'cause when you
- 43:59shut click your phone off, it shuts the thing off unless you
- 44:01have the premium, right? So I encourage people to either
- 44:05get YouTube Premium or start listening on a podcast to these
- 44:09type of episodes 'cause it's a lot easier.
- 44:12Dude, this is a call out straight up to Lou Rock.
- 44:15Talked to him about this. He doesn't have the premium.
- 44:17He's watching commercials for all the YouTube content.
- 44:21I go, it's 10 bucks a month, 120 bucks a year and you don't have
- 44:26to watch any commercials and you can turn into a podcast and go
- 44:28what is wrong with you? So you rock, you got it, dude.
- 44:32Step up your game, man. That's like that's nothing.
- 44:35Just it's a game changer to be able to close your phone and
- 44:39it's a podcast doesn't burn a hole in your pocket.
- 44:41You know what to watch all you know, it's you don't have to
- 44:45watch all those freaking commercials watching our videos.
- 44:48So last thing I want to say, Adam, is that, you know, again,
- 44:53I'm going to clarify the fact that these are my personal
- 44:57opinions when I speak. If if you have different
- 45:00opinions, that's fantastic. I'm not telling you to go do
- 45:03anything that I'm doing or believe anything that I'm
- 45:06saying. All I want to do is come across
- 45:08as is not. I want to be just a me as a
- 45:12normal person. I'm not mad at anyone for
- 45:15collecting differently than me. I'm not pointing at you for
- 45:19anything you're doing in this hobby if I think you're wrong.
- 45:23It's just that's just my opinion.
- 45:25I'm not going to be like you're wrong you're the worst person
- 45:28ever because you're wrong. No, I don't care how you
- 45:31collect. I truly do not care.
- 45:36I just really wanted to put that there.
- 45:37One last thing to make it even more controversial for Victor
- 45:42and anybody else. You know when I was a kid when I
- 45:45opened up a pack of Tops baseball cards, 198786, when I
- 45:49got common players, you know where they went into my spokes.
- 45:53So I have no problem with kids not loving all the Commons that
- 45:57come out of the packs. I don't care.
- 45:59I was the same way as a kid. So you don't need to collect
- 46:03every single card. You know, every base card that
- 46:06comes out of a pack isn't worth everything.
- 46:10It you don't need to just pile up these stacks of cards.
- 46:13Some people love it, but not everyone needs to love every
- 46:17card that comes out of a pack. So I want to, you know, throw
- 46:20that in the system to work Victor up a little bit, you
- 46:23know? Work him out.
- 46:24Victor is a great guy and and actually the one of the reasons
- 46:28I love Tom Brady based rookie cards is because those were
- 46:31Commons when they came out of the pack.
- 46:33Everyone thought he was a common right.
- 46:35So that's why I think they're really cool is because a lot of
- 46:37people when they pull the Brady rookie out of a pack in 2000 or
- 46:402001, they threw it in the trash.
- 46:44So I love it. That's why I love those cards.
- 46:46All right, we're going to wrap it here, Dylan first one of many
- 46:50here in the future. This was awesome, guys.
- 46:54Thanks for listening and watching.
- 46:56We'll catch you on the next one.
