- 0:42With a blunt penknife the Doctor Who commentary podcast Mark.
- 0:48Yeah. Why can't we ever go anywhere?
- 0:51Nice. Where people are lovely.
- 0:55Who are we going ghastly? An awful.
- 1:00Yeah. As as an introvert, yakin are
- 1:05totally empathize. Yes?
- 1:07What we don't go anywhere without a staying in yeah, hoard
- 1:10much rather, you know, controlled environment in a safe
- 1:13box Mark. And I have a saying don't we?
- 1:17Which we say to each other or a lot and that is people peopling.
- 1:21Yes, if we've run out of things to see about people, it covers a
- 1:28lot of ground. Yeah.
- 1:29People peopling the people, I give my life.
- 1:34Also, I will insist on peopling. Obviously I have a question for
- 1:39you. Yeah, well, okay, so you mark
- 1:43datuk having taken on a series of exciting Adventures through
- 1:47time and space with her shape-changing time.
- 1:51Traveler known only as Doctor Who, whoo, yes.
- 1:55I know it's very exciting and however his time for you to
- 1:59leave Eve. What have I done?
- 2:03Well, that's what you can answer.
- 2:05So if you was a doctor who companion, how would you choose
- 2:10to leave? Would you like to be married off
- 2:14to some Rando that happens to be in that story?
- 2:16Would you like to be murdered and create, you know, the
- 2:20prehistoric elif? Save the dinosaurs anyone else?
- 2:26Well, would you like to just be dropped off?
- 2:28But do do. How would you like to go?
- 2:32Oh, gosh. Part of me thinks Noble
- 2:36sacrifice. But hmm, that's not given it
- 2:41that much. Thought what about yourself?
- 2:44What would your first? Oh hello dramatic.
- 2:48As possible. No, I want hordes of birds
- 2:53clawing at my face. You know I've got a bomb
- 2:55strapped to my back I'm heading away from the core of the earth
- 2:59and I'll get beamed away but the bomb still goes off.
- 3:03Yo the as big as Fireworks as possible.
- 3:06You're not giving it much thought have you the worst thing
- 3:10that would happen would be like revelation of Dolly.
- 3:12So just you know have a polystyrene bust of myself.
- 3:16Full of me. It it's the therapy.
- 3:18Incredibly anti climactic. That would be.
- 3:21Yeah, that would be something. Wouldn't mind the Perry exit.
- 3:24You know the or the original one, not the other Wanna Marry
- 3:26Brad blessed. I'd like to have keeps returning
- 3:30to the totally evil despot. We've been happy an interesting
- 3:37way to go, but it is a lottery, isn't it with these exhibits?
- 3:42And this is a return to form after some pretty fucking
- 3:47shocking exits in the last couple of years.
- 3:50Yes, I think after Barbara and Ian leave, the Tardis nobody
- 3:57really gets a very good. Send off for a while on TV
- 4:00Stephen Mesa. I'll choice at the end of the
- 4:02Savages. I just can't.
- 4:04From nowhere, do do is just forgotten about what but yeah
- 4:11after she didn't even have time to come and say goodbye sorry
- 4:14but a polytope are halfway for a story.
- 4:16There's no reason and then the guy just happens to be the demon
- 4:19left speaker. Yeah.
- 4:21Okay. More of it but I think things
- 4:25will get better from here on in for a little while at least.
- 4:29Yeah, this is pretty good. I think Jamie in Zoey's is very
- 4:31moving at the end of games Heartbreaker.
- 4:34Oh well, I probably sure it's terrible.
- 4:37That one. Yeah, nothing to speak of.
- 4:38Yeah. Well, I shall have a properly
- 4:40qualified scientist or nothing at all.
- 4:44Oh well not gonna help me then those still to be determined.
- 4:49All right. Joe Grant as a brilliant exit.
- 4:55Yeah thanks Sarah. Jane's is understated in a very
- 4:58beautiful way you know I quite love and I love the fact that
- 5:04Tom Baker and Liz leading went away and took time to work on it
- 5:08themselves and find something that worked for them because
- 5:13apparently what they've been given just didn't didn't meet
- 5:16their expectation. So it's very sweet that they
- 5:19were given the, the Liberty to do that because there was
- 5:21clearly a very strong relationship and friendship
- 5:25there and it and it really shows because as we're seeing in the
- 5:28last episode, The bit where you've got Tom baby, when you've
- 5:31got the fourth, doctor showing a bit of emotion at this.
- 5:33Lila leaving. This is one of the only other
- 5:38moments where the doctor seems only doesn't really a moat.
- 5:42He's still being quite alien but it's the you know, don't you
- 5:46forget about me the hole? Really touching, I think Ramana
- 5:52to sex. A lot of people don't agree with
- 5:55me, but I think that's perfect because I couldn't, I just
- 5:57couldn't imagine that pair of them having this agonizingly,
- 6:00long, goodbye sequence and it's just, you were the warmest room.
- 6:04All of them all, you know, she's I just and she's off.
- 6:09Yeah. And I think that works really
- 6:10well, is the same. I think I've already said about
- 6:13Tegan's, but some people including Nicola Bryant when she
- 6:17was in the studio watching. It said, When I leave, I don't
- 6:20want to departure like that because she everybody seems to
- 6:23think that it's off hand and it comes from nowhere.
- 6:26But if you spend the last three years with Tegan, you're aware
- 6:30that she is somebody who just thinks in a moment.
- 6:33Acts terrible time for the Deep. Yeah, it's just crazy and I and
- 6:43when you've got Tegan circumstance, she she's somebody
- 6:46who is impulsive and spontaneous.
- 6:49Yes, she just goes to show what I've had enough.
- 6:52It's really hard enough. I'm off.
- 6:54Then she tries or is Buddy. They should have fucking been
- 6:58another way I'll tell you. Yeah boy.
- 7:00Yeah, buddy. Attrex is very memorable,
- 7:05probably the most memorable. This is quite beautiful.
- 7:10I think it's an odd choice, but it's done well and I get I get
- 7:14it because she's very Humane person.
- 7:17He can see is really good. Perry's is Unforgettable.
- 7:20I even caught like Mills, I like the fact that the doctor did the
- 7:25little speech that he has buguese, like crazy Paving and
- 7:30there's something quite sweet about that.
- 7:32Of course, feeling, you know, that is absolutely gonna be in
- 7:36one of these Rusty Davis specials.
- 7:40Pretty much had that confirmed. Yeah.
- 7:42And I wonder if Rusty Davis would explain, what happened?
- 7:46How she got back from a bit of rough on the nozzle.
- 7:49A few to be really intrigued to find out what they've done and
- 7:53what their it. What story will have to tell it?
- 7:57Be amazing to see her back. Actually, I think it's one of
- 7:59those characters that she had a bum deal.
- 8:03She wasn't up to a time where it wasn't really at the height of
- 8:07popularity within the BBC or the public perception actually
- 8:11wasn't served. Well at all.
- 8:13So it'd be quite nice for her to come back because you can see
- 8:15Davies double whammy you big finish.
- 8:18Why I think of Nice to her character there.
- 8:21Russell T Davies doing the same thing.
- 8:24Oh man, that would be a turn. Yeah and then of all the
- 8:27millions of things that he was doing in power of the doctor,
- 8:31hmm, you get that pay off of the Seventh Doctor and Isis
- 8:35relationship as well. So that's kind of a fun story
- 8:38where she gets to say you know, we got we left on the wrong foot
- 8:44but I love you and these baby. Yeah I love you too, its
- 8:47glorious. Yeah very Touching and Tegan's
- 8:50moment when she speaks to the doctor as well.
- 8:52I think she got in the power of the doctor.
- 8:55I really like that is very sweet.
- 8:57I know that I think that very touching.
- 9:01I still can't watch those two scenes without wailing up or
- 9:04kind of now in a place where the companions are so relevant to
- 9:09the show. Well, then hard, just go.
- 9:11Can I do? It's always got to be jumping
- 9:14off, the Empire State Building or turning into a puddle of
- 9:18water or Around an American diner with a shielder happened.
- 9:25Small for does. Doesn't she?
- 9:26She just she just wanders off. I like the fact that she leaves
- 9:30on her own terms. Fuck, you Doctor mmm-hmm.
- 9:34Yeah, but you know what, my absolute favorite is.
- 9:37Mmm, it's the fuck. No.
- 9:40The first I do like Susan's departure.
- 9:42I think it is, right? The, he's a bit old but it's
- 9:45still pretty good. I love eating and Barbara's.
- 9:47It's long, it's like 10 minutes long, get to see how it affects
- 9:52the doctor. You get to see them at home,
- 9:54having fun that being happy and knowing that they've got like a
- 9:57grand future together in terms of like payoff emotional payoff.
- 10:02Oh yeah, having spent two years of Sort of hoping that one day
- 10:07they may get back home, they get there, they get their happy
- 10:10ending, that's really sweet and it's it's it's one of those ones
- 10:15that really sets very well. I think it's probably one of one
- 10:18of the one of the better exits. All absolutely.
- 10:22What I think is the best motivated.
- 10:24Exit is our little Victoria here, like she's fit into the
- 10:28Tardis scared. She's news are trapped and and
- 10:33we have time for out this story. To understand that enough.
- 10:39You know, I am sick of being anxious feelings.
- 10:43If I'm going to wet my knickers every five minutes.
- 10:45Yeah. And it's such a child.
- 10:47I mean it's such a sad thing because she's an orphaned child.
- 10:51This is her surrogate family, but she's not happy with them
- 10:55anymore, and you don't bleep with them, maybe establishing
- 10:59the harrises, as strongly as they do, as a domestic couple in
- 11:03our home, maybe. That it that it was done on
- 11:06purpose. So there was, she could sort of
- 11:09slip into that home effectively. Well, I mean, what kind of watch
- 11:13the episode? We just spent 15 minutes to talk
- 11:15about companion exits, but it's nice to hear your take on it.
- 11:21Yeah, different every time you know when I talk about excess
- 11:25just put some people. Some people love so much.
- 11:28I know someone who thinks the departure of Donna is appalling
- 11:34like Bleep. Betrayal of the doctor and the
- 11:37series. I will you discuss with me
- 11:41before where you have a dry eye for weeks.
- 11:44Like I was grieving for a while. Yeah, he's a hard bastard.
- 11:49Sometimes Rusty Davis, you know? Okay.
- 11:52I mean that's I think, yeah, that's a Kickin.
- 11:54Their cojones, that one little bit that gets me is where she's
- 11:59like, no no not like yeah, it's just thinking about it now.
- 12:05All the bit of the kitchen where she goes.
- 12:06Yeah, so yeah, yeah, or you've got cribbins OSH, but she was
- 12:10better with you. God bleep, they're coming back.
- 12:14Sorry, she's watched hear from the defense has issued.
- 12:17Yes, we're doctor and Donna for next year.
- 12:21Well, you know what? I thought, maybe we should do
- 12:22another doctor Donna episode. You know that, um, do you want a
- 12:26new ones? Yeah.
- 12:29Sorry. Sign me up now.
- 12:30People are being indulgent. We're planning the next one in
- 12:33this one. Yeah, one of you.
- 12:35Probably won't here for a minimum 12 months, what kind of
- 12:38sin then? Come on up and waiting 10
- 12:39minutes. I'll do it all the time, you
- 12:52know? Honestly I can't do much if my
- 12:56most annoying feature is our make a big fuss about all.
- 13:00I really want to get this in for dinner or I really want to do
- 13:03this, so he gets it in or he does it and then we've got some
- 13:07left and you'll go right. We're gonna have that.
- 13:09You know, the leftover are now I can possibly that ever again.
- 13:11I want that looks like a fucking contrary.
- 13:17I do apologize to bring it to a common tree.
- 13:19Yes, look at these fabulous. Spunky people.
- 13:26Very yes. Poor, I mean if they made that
- 13:30acts are fixing mountain. Look like that.
- 13:33What's that? We'd sloughing all over it but
- 13:36you send the foam rubber to my career.
- 13:40He's got the feast. He can sell that.
- 13:42I think if you if you were a lad that you know love it and all
- 13:45these Suds and seaweed and things like that and he's got a
- 13:48bit of a hangdog expression. Its yeah.
- 13:52Stranger in the end of this episode where he's being away me
- 13:54aboard lovely. I'm like but who the hell is
- 13:57this? Been a Also, for the last six
- 13:59episodes. Yeah, I'll get used to this.
- 14:02Thank you for a lovely meal mrs. Harris, really do.
- 14:06Yeah, you've been putting your game since there since the
- 14:09beginning? He doesn't lose it completely
- 14:11does it because he goes up to the fella in the wheelchair and
- 14:15says, you know, oh, how you doing?
- 14:17Yeah. It's like, I don't have to pay
- 14:19scale when you work. Yeah.
- 14:21I think they're those, that's quite a nice little moment about
- 14:23that. Hmm.
- 14:25Oh, here we go. She's screaming her head off.
- 14:27Look I wonder if that I come in useful.
- 14:31Maybe it might benefit all gosh. All while one blah, blah, blah.
- 14:36That's amazing. You should do the Foley asleep
- 14:44sound effects, but they create It's kind of a bit alien and
- 14:52weird, isn't it? It's really hard.
- 14:53Yeah. And it's not a Deborah Watling
- 14:55scream now, who is it? It's Margo, he whose scream.
- 15:01Oh, what a whole lot higher is almost, hey, ho or enough self
- 15:05offer. Screaming Doctor Who mmm.
- 15:09She's great. She's lovely.
- 15:11She's always comes across as babe.
- 15:13Remembers a lot from back there. Yeah.
- 15:17Well, they actually interviewed more of these sort of a more
- 15:20than some of the behind the scenes crew.
- 15:22There's one or forgotten her name but she was on the demons.
- 15:27Like what I was just thinking about the LD I was going on
- 15:30about going up top of the church.
- 15:32Yeah and she just seems like such a gossip must have gotten
- 15:35the stories out of her. I think it's sue someone.
- 15:40Yeah. No Sue Malden.
- 15:44That's all right. No, I think that no that's that,
- 15:47she's the BBC. Archive selector was that not
- 15:50that super molten Sue, vertue, owner Steven Moffat wife and
- 15:54it's a su I suspect so soon it may not be a super tall.
- 15:59Some of your good luck to them about the Chemistry Between the
- 16:10leads are while. Never is it more exemplified
- 16:13then here, when this isn't even the red zone Oh yeah, sailing
- 16:18quite a crazy scenario. I can't imagine that.
- 16:21They had that massive tentacle coming out of the war though,
- 16:24like that. No, I think that's one of the
- 16:27animations Liberties. You know what it is?
- 16:30Is proper Creature from the Black Lagoon.
- 16:32Isn't it is great? Yeah, they're going for a bit of
- 16:34a bit B-movie serious baby. Yeah, I'll fit and by all
- 16:41accounts, like we're never going what he did was Thank you,
- 16:46David, the director. So he filmed half of the loop
- 16:52and then he filmed the other half of the loop and I need any
- 16:56editing the two together yet, make it looks thing.
- 16:58That's like if this improper for winter.
- 17:01Yeah, look, well Triton wouldn't leave the ground either so they
- 17:07had the propellers going at a low enough read, but it looked
- 17:11as though it was in motion and he stole a pram.
- 17:15Apparently Daughters or somebody, somebody had to have a
- 17:18pram handy and they just put the camera in that and rushed it
- 17:22passed to give the give that give the illusion.
- 17:27I've got to be honest like you know pedal that story now but
- 17:30how about fills my first Doctor Who story and then how you know
- 17:34I wet the bed the night because I thought the girl died in the
- 17:38in the water tank at the end of episode, two of you watch any
- 17:40more. Yeah, thank God.
- 17:42I watching back then a nine years old watching this So I
- 17:46would have been an absolute stay.
- 17:47I'll tell ya. I can't handle kept mcculloch's
- 17:50gay disco music. Oh.
- 17:53Hell, yes. Well, the hinge Khedira.
- 17:56I forgot to watch the his career as a child nurse what's-her-name
- 17:59nurse Lamont. Uh-huh.
- 18:01This still about. That's it, mr.
- 18:03Lamont who had a passing resemblance to my mum.
- 18:07Wait. Oh, What were those crazy over
- 18:10stereo eyes? Yeah, well guess I'm in the
- 18:13morning which is never glasses on.
- 18:15She looked very much like sister lament.
- 18:16Did you feel like you were going to be brain with a rock every
- 18:19day? Sometimes.
- 18:21Yes my oh my. Oh my God, it's happening again.
- 18:39The secret with Harry and Sarah in the barn, long visuals.
- 18:43Yeah, it was his face when he came out Darkness with a
- 18:46pitchfork. Yeah, that's, you know, in
- 18:49martyr didn't get a lot of stuff to work with but he's a totally
- 18:51different character in. He's the Saigon I think Robert
- 18:55Holmes was onto something. When he went down, the
- 18:58procession route because it was adults behaving in a strange
- 19:01way. The scared me more than
- 19:02anything. Not the monster.
- 19:03Scare me a bit naff, but adults that were probably scared or
- 19:08behave. In Sinister way that really yeah
- 19:12or things like in the seeds in the seeds of Doom and infernal.
- 19:17The thing I couldn't work out what it was four years, this
- 19:20scared me so much about them, but it's a fear of losing
- 19:22control of yourself, mmm. And something else.
- 19:28Everything Oliver. Yeah, because I was like, I
- 19:30couldn't pin what it was body horror, losing losing control
- 19:34your body or, you know, the green death, certain stories
- 19:37that really as a young kid 8:00 the the bit for me was the end
- 19:44of episode six and that is knowing you're going to die that
- 19:48idea as a child. Really frightened me.
- 19:51And there's a couple of moments in classic Doctor Who I think we
- 19:55talked about chalak, in case of androzani that big one realizes
- 19:58and he screams because he knows he's about to die, it's scary.
- 20:04It's and it's and it's really it shows you how sensibilities of
- 20:09changed because these are things Things that I don't think they
- 20:11would ever see him Doctor Who again, but there's things that
- 20:13we see in Doctor Who know that the classic run would never have
- 20:17touched because of sensibilities.
- 20:19And the changes sensibilities of the viewership.
- 20:21I don't know though, you know what more fitting Dark Water,
- 20:25please don't burn me. Don't remind me.
- 20:28Yeah. That was that ever?
- 20:29So glad I've been was as a child, I would have gone through
- 20:32some existential crisis, is I'll tell ya.
- 20:34Yeah. Well also as well, my mother was
- 20:38cremated so I found the idea a bit offensive.
- 20:41There's no yeah, it's somebody should have been going, thats a
- 20:47bit risky, that one. But awesome.
- 20:51I mean, I have my doubts, the ambition of being that person, I
- 20:55just think that was a bit tasteless.
- 20:57Yeah, certainly backgrounds have fear for the Deep.
- 21:00A very odd choices made in this is everyone leaves Just this
- 21:06once everyone leaves everybody lives but they all have some
- 21:10real Speed Demon. Well, we don't know what the
- 21:16long-term repercussions will be for these poor people, because
- 21:18they've clearly had some very traumatic experiences.
- 21:21Mrs. Harris. Walked onto the stage.
- 21:23She's gonna be traumatized for life.
- 21:25Exactly. Yes.
- 21:26Because she brings a bubble bath.
- 21:27You have a breakdown. Uh-huh.
- 21:29Exactly. She's never going to use meaty
- 21:31bubbles. Again are right.
- 21:34Ask you a question. Have you ever had a bubble bath
- 21:37and pretended? It was the phone from jury from
- 21:40the deep. Did you not see my tweet?
- 21:45Oh yes, I did. Oh, I thought that was just, you
- 21:49know, like nude by on Twitter, even venusian?
- 21:55Don't you pretend, you're above that sort of have you see my
- 22:00halo? I mean, I can reach any consult,
- 22:27they want this marvelous. Hmm, all going on, what we got?
- 22:33Razor, Gregory exact name of Jesus Christ.
- 22:36I'll tell you what you can't do a single tweet about a story of.
- 22:40I am chipping in Coop, what tickles got something to see.
- 22:43Actually quite controversial, you know, sir, prepare yourself
- 22:48that seemed so, so far so good. One of the best companion
- 22:51departures because like Jewel, grants its planned properly and
- 22:55walls and through the story from the start.
- 22:58But the question has for us because usually, a question,
- 23:01hmm. How much foam is too much foam?
- 23:05Oh man, I can't get enough of it.
- 23:09Honestly, you can cover me in it.
- 23:11I cannot get enough of it. Are you thinking of you know
- 23:19what, right when he first come on this thing?
- 23:22Yeah, it was kind of stop it. Stop being rude.
- 23:25So now he's the one that he's the Catalyst for all this filth.
- 23:30It just keeps on coming on his throne and looking like an
- 23:34innocent. And then we've got this.
- 23:38I heart, I'll bloody hell. All the regulars here, come on,
- 23:42lets it Go and it's actually just a whole lot of not doing
- 23:46much and then it stops Everything feels like it's
- 23:49delaying anything actually happening.
- 23:54I don't think is entirely wrong as well.
- 23:57There is a long stretches of not a lot happening.
- 24:00Yeah and like we said it's not until about halfway through
- 24:03episode 5 that it all really kicks off.
- 24:06But something is happening right now.
- 24:07There's foam literally filling up.
- 24:10They have to form parties under me.
- 24:11Looking got my intensity and at the controls of a Grizzly
- 24:15looking we'd creature. Yeah, me out of it.
- 24:19Anyone else Daniel night are lovely dark.
- 24:24This is the stylophone takes away some of the Menace and
- 24:28robsons another dodgy show T boss leader but Victor.
- 24:32Modernist performance is very good.
- 24:35The Not a shout and in this season and they're a lot harder
- 24:38shouting. Yeah, the last episode is quite
- 24:42emotional for a treatment facility which we've touched
- 24:44upon, especially after the rush exit for poor Ben and Polly.
- 24:49I would agree with that. Yeah, it's a very strong female
- 24:53character. We completely neglected to
- 24:55mention. I think she might be the best
- 24:56one. Who's that Gemma?
- 24:58Corwin, from Wheeling space. She's pretty good eye.
- 25:03She's quiet. Yeah, I would like that.
- 25:05Certain were terribly, you know, he does, he seems to have taken
- 25:08quite a shine to her, even more than Astrid farrier.
- 25:11Do I have to get out of this bed?
- 25:12Oh good. I don't.
- 25:14Hmm, snuggle up with me, Jim a Corwin.
- 25:21Let me see. Does anybody ever did it today?
- 25:25David to the, did he won? Oh, David, he won.
- 25:28Oh, David. The did he want my personal
- 25:30information by? Yes, that did.
- 25:32Who fan says I love this story, full of atmosphere and chills, a
- 25:37great companion, departure that is very emotional, and the end
- 25:40of episode, two, always gives me chills sat down there in the
- 25:44darkness waiting. Yes.
- 25:46So, somebody zombie agrees with that one, open-ended suspense
- 25:51lines. Yes, I've been left in
- 25:53suspenders, I don't do. I agree with him either.
- 25:56That's true. Is we said this event, a sweet
- 25:58story. This you can put a positive and
- 26:00a negative reading on it. It's all Disney here because it
- 26:03feels totally so different. And I think that's why I don't
- 26:07quite know what to make of it. But we've puzzled this out and
- 26:11there's a lot going for it. Toby, hey, do said recently that
- 26:15this growing up, this was his favourite Doctor Who story and
- 26:19understand someone giving it that reading is got everything
- 26:22you could possibly want, right? Carol work monsters.
- 26:25This scares, you know, doctor and companions at their height.
- 26:29It's a heart is right as well. There's a lot of long, bloody
- 26:32scenes of, not much happier times, he's quite, it's
- 26:36obviously very fine balance. We've got Dave Rennie another
- 26:41sexy accent gold. Lovely.
- 26:43Dave Fury is a real chill. Chill.
- 26:46Oh very clever using Victoria's constant screaming as part of
- 26:50the solution and she gave chose a better moment.
- 26:53It's she's doing it right now in it right now seaweed has never
- 26:58been as scary as it is here. Quite a few people responded
- 27:05actually I don't think I'll go through them all but yeah come
- 27:07on. We see people.
- 27:08See people say it's Exquisite who said that that was Brian
- 27:12ferrill. ATS is it?
- 27:15Absolutely exquisite exquisite what I want to hear them all.
- 27:19I want to hear them all Dan Hollingsworth, one of the best
- 27:22from that year, lots of creepy moments and I always enjoy a
- 27:26community that has monsters in it.
- 27:29But like that. Yeah, my big monster is at the
- 27:31heart of the community Alistair Bassett.
- 27:34I love the stories where the enemy is never properly
- 27:37explained. This is one of them.
- 27:39Yeah. Mysterious and very watchable
- 27:42and the animation is great. My good work or who else?
- 27:46Have we got? Who else have we got?
- 27:49And all of a sudden. Okay, sir.
- 27:53Oh, what games are like? Hey, what?
- 27:56What? Lots of gallantry podcast?
- 27:59Oh my God, she's saying it blew my loyal, his bloody Gorgeous.
- 28:03I'll tell you what. So I go anyway, the thumping
- 28:09heartbeat, the Menace, waiting in the pipeline Fury, is an
- 28:12underrated classic creeper, Epilogue with one of the best
- 28:15companion. Departures plus the creepy
- 28:18Cliffhanger to part. Where Maggie Harris walks slowly
- 28:21into the deep one of Trojans best.
- 28:24Now I agree with all of that. I don't think it's something
- 28:26right though, I think this is easy.
- 28:29Yeah, I think it ranks. Pretty, highly am because I had
- 28:32to look in my research has to try and figure out where it
- 28:37ranks and hoping and it's fairly consistently a highly ranked in
- 28:431998 Doctor Who fans nominated it. 20 best story of all times.
- 28:49Hey Faith. Wow, top 30.
- 28:51Okay 2003 it's Up to number 38. Okay so it's gone downhill.
- 28:58Yeah already helped my still top 40.
- 29:00Come 2009, 41 idea. What's going on.
- 29:04I've got new who by then but still shows great.
- 29:07It's going to be in the Twin delivers place.
- 29:09Come from 2022. Yeah.
- 29:11Give or take. And the last time they did a
- 29:14doctor who Paul, which I think is probably the last time we may
- 29:16see any. It was a number 69 but there are
- 29:21more stories on there. There's all there's more stories
- 29:24coming. So, I'm guessing that sort of
- 29:26reordering of, yeah, that kind of makes sense.
- 29:29This is the new Hudak Wildlife. That's that's, that's top-tier,
- 29:33isn't? It was still the 12th highest
- 29:35ranked story of the 60s? What is that?
- 29:40All the tweets, all, let me see. Let me see Andy Parkinson,
- 29:47antique my eyesight, Andy, one of my very first hamster, extra
- 29:52subscribers. Hope you enjoy.
- 29:54So again, and excellent. Andy, Andy.
- 29:58I really enjoyed it. The animation is superb.
- 30:01Victor modern, please, the descent into madness.
- 30:03Brilliantly. Reminds me a bit of Nicholson in
- 30:06The Shining and all canned quill, or super creepy.
- 30:09And I love the music score. And of course, it's the first
- 30:12time we see the Sonic Screwdriver, which we haven't
- 30:14touched upon at all. Well, it's just really a
- 30:17screwdriver, isn't it? Just so it turns up and then
- 30:20disappears, but it's still don't screw on a pipe but it is.
- 30:22Yeah, yeah, Big Mo Moment notable first appearance,
- 30:27Robert. Manners, I find the incidental
- 30:30music, very atmospheric. And the story makes for this
- 30:32really makes for interesting story within this season 5
- 30:35cereals. I've Relentless stream of
- 30:39positivity here. Yeah.
- 30:40And I think I heart, who doesn't like it.
- 30:42Yeah, everybody else seems to be on the same.
- 30:45Wavelength about this one. We've got David Bickerstaff
- 30:48seeing. It's extremely Sinister.
- 30:50David Bickerstaff isn't that the fellow from Harry Potter?
- 30:54That's as shown? I don't know why I'm still alive
- 30:57is because they'll fit just as cute as Sean Big Stuff.
- 31:00Hmm, let me see. And Tim Smith guy at Tim Smith
- 31:05guy. Love it.
- 31:07Robson is a greedy bastard of a villain.
- 31:09Even before he gets taken over, these are great bastard of a
- 31:14visit great together and the music's awesome and really adds
- 31:22to the feel of mounting dread interesting.
- 31:24That the monster is not an alien but something that was here the
- 31:27whole time. Yeah, that is pretty creepy.
- 31:32Oh, Tim Allen be all lovely June.
- 31:36Jim Jim. If you took all the base,
- 31:39Commander's from Trading, Sera, and put them together in a room,
- 31:42which one would come out on top. I got Jemaine in terms of their
- 31:48ability as a base commander or Isotope in the forest taking
- 31:55command of you in. Okay well let's do both both.
- 31:59I'd say the best base commander is probably is it leader Clint
- 32:10Now, he's rubbish either. He's he's got really nice
- 32:13earrings. As a Layman penley.
- 32:14There's there's something going on there.
- 32:16We definitely the top in that relationship and that is the
- 32:20best place Commander than, is it a person from the moon base?
- 32:26He's quite commanding and he's pretty competent as like a
- 32:29strong daddy Vibes. Oh, you're talking about Tapas
- 32:33in a tan? Yeah, I'll know if I think in
- 32:39terms of that we say is General Cutler from the tenth planet.
- 32:47Oh yeah. Yeah.
- 32:48You didn't want to mess with him under any circumstance.
- 32:51You'd be chomping away on a cigar once you're done as well.
- 32:58Everybody. I think I've covered everybody.
- 33:00I apologize to anybody that I have not mentioned by retweeted
- 33:03a few time as and I think I lost track.
- 33:06Nothing. You got it.
- 33:07You got a good number of responses them all.
- 33:09Yes. Okay so we've we're in the
- 33:12extended coder now we've had the rather Charming dinner scene.
- 33:16Yes. Where is bit?
- 33:18Weird? Odisha, Victoria sleep at the
- 33:20table? It's going to come on.
- 33:21Victoria wake up. I think a bit I'll tell you if I
- 33:26like the guests over my house, they fell asleep halfway through
- 33:28dinner. I would not consider that an
- 33:31endorsement of my company. This is sweet, Jamie a mix of
- 33:38Moria and he really doesn't want her to go to see it clearly.
- 33:43Yeah, he's clearly really taken with her and he's slightly
- 33:48affronted that she wouldn't want to see with him.
- 33:52No longer Jamie's always coming. Yeah, it's all fine.
- 33:56But the thing is, he doesn't love her enough to leave the
- 33:58doctor. And he always was gonna love the
- 34:02doctor, the most, in fact, his departure, where the time those
- 34:06force him to go home? That's the only way that was
- 34:09ever going to happen. Yeah, I think he's one of the
- 34:12companions that we do have stayed by the doctors side in
- 34:15definitely nothing would have persuaded him otherwise It's the
- 34:19ultimate Bromance, isn't it? Oh yeah, there's there were such
- 34:22a strong bond between them. There's a couple laughing the
- 34:26complex. I think the fourth doctor and
- 34:28Harry, could they could have made something brilliant of
- 34:31that. I think I would, my dream had a
- 34:35story in mind. I would have liked if hiring a
- 34:38Dropped In and Out. Sort of sporadically, just did a
- 34:42story a season or two, but imagine him meeting Lila
- 34:47marvelous. Larry me to Lila come on old
- 34:50girl. You say I'll call again and I'll
- 34:52break your nose. Yeah.
- 34:53And he would just spend a lot of his time with steady on what I
- 34:58see. Oh Jamie kiss, Victoria on the
- 35:02head. Does that happen in the that's
- 35:05very sweet. I just think all of this as well
- 35:08as quite moving because there's like extended silence sequences
- 35:13of her, just standing on the beach.
- 35:16Watching them go. We've never had anything like
- 35:17this before. Now is really unusual and you've
- 35:20got the even definitely semsem is using a cue from the evil of
- 35:24the Daleks. Uses Victorious theme again in
- 35:27that little bit of internal continuity, which is quite
- 35:30unusual at this time of the series history as well.
- 35:33So it's it's obviously everybody within the production is giving
- 35:37it a lot of time and a lot of thought and I do like how Jamie
- 35:41is kind of petulant in a minute as well as on.
- 35:43I'm keeping it where we go, you know, what?
- 35:46If one of these are come with its Pisces like Oh well, okay,
- 35:50off to the next adventure, we saw day quickly, but hey, that's
- 35:54supposed benefits this to get some well, actually, the real
- 35:57space. You could probably waste a lot
- 35:58of time, mooning over Victoria's loss and not particular robot.
- 36:06Yeah, with a Kleenex box fee with the music from the web
- 36:11Planet playing around. It's very strange.
- 36:16Yeah, I really like this. I think it's strange because two
- 36:20of my least favorite companions. Victorian a jurek.
- 36:24Get two of the best Exes Are there specific just happy?
- 36:27They go in but that maybe maybe that might feed into it as well.
- 36:33No doubt, they are genuinely. It's almost time.
- 36:36I don't think, you know, the right is going.
- 36:38They'll they've been able to survive going to give them a
- 36:40great ending. Hmm.
- 36:42It just happens to be that they deliver something pretty bloody
- 36:45spectacular. Yeah, well, Mark, at the end of
- 36:49this, yes, commentary, I forgot we were doing then it's just, I
- 36:54mean issue. Yeah, just blathering.
- 36:58We need to figure three reasons of Peace as to why we would
- 37:02recommend through the day. I don't think this is going to
- 37:04be too difficult and let's start with you.
- 37:07Oh? Missy Dudley Simpson score.
- 37:14It's I got I really enjoyed I like the atmosphere of brings to
- 37:17the story. You know.
- 37:19It's it's a it's a it's a favorite of mine and I quite
- 37:21like the fact that a few of the cues still exist like listening
- 37:24to them on your as a few compilations they've cropped up
- 37:27on in the past. So yeah, vote for me I'm gonna
- 37:32say the genuine scarce in this story and I think there is
- 37:39something they It's very effective.
- 37:40Good season for Life, fear this. Well before this I mean kids
- 37:44just one safe watching Doctor Who in this period but it's
- 37:48Carla got everything is got a bit of body horror.
- 37:51It's got a bit of a monster of the week.
- 37:55It's got a bit of possession is my tapping into all of those
- 37:58different fears. And by all accounts, I the
- 38:02sequence we've open quill, overcoming Maggie Harris
- 38:07directed the fuck out of this and Did not hold back.
- 38:11You didn't care if I was kids were traumatized.
- 38:14Yeah. Bravo for that cuz I think his
- 38:16could do with a little scaring some time, so definitely
- 38:20wholeheartedly agree. One of them is going to be
- 38:25slightly off-kilter so it's not so much about what was done at
- 38:31the time. It's about what's been done with
- 38:32it now and I'm going to praise Market ears.
- 38:36Hmm for what he does with this own tracks because it seems you
- 38:40know there's some of the stuff that he's done a special on 60s
- 38:43and early 70s. Don't you really knock the
- 38:45original soundtracks? He's made them say.
- 38:47No absolutely brilliant. And he's but instead I think
- 38:49there's a 5.1 stereo mix on this.
- 38:53East. It doesn't get enough.
- 38:55Praise for the work. They does.
- 38:57I don't think enough people. Plenty of people probably don't
- 39:01fully appreciate what he manages to do.
- 39:02To keep the same traps these stories Tip-Top.
- 39:07What you did at is absolutely responsible for the animations
- 39:10that we got, because it was his soundtracks that they were had
- 39:13to marry up with it. So, yeah, because some good ones
- 39:16out there. We are, lots of things like that
- 39:19animated but some unusual choices like Galaxy 4, which is
- 39:25absolutely tedious, but scraps are quite well as animation.
- 39:28Yeah, Okay, then let the my my second thing you're my second
- 39:33thing is going to be very obviously Victoria's departure
- 39:38and just how sensitive it is and how well played it is and how
- 39:43they lean into just, how much these actors love working
- 39:45together and really sad about leaving each other.
- 39:48I think it is one of those times when the line is crossed and
- 39:52it's not the characters and the actors and it's just really
- 39:55beautifully done in a way that classic Who Often pause talking
- 40:02about his characters like that. So, yeah, I really really nice.
- 40:05Yeah, it's nice and it's such a, I think 80 followed a character
- 40:09for a year or so it's great. It's nice that she gets a proper
- 40:13send-off in her decent send-off and isn't off hand or just
- 40:18ditched as other companions. Prior to her might've been get
- 40:22our own kind of Gallifrey. Yeah, okay, sure whatever.
- 40:29Time I should be going. Mmm.
- 40:32I left sort of my body like 40 for sure but it could think of
- 40:40third thing. Managed to cover quite a lot of
- 40:48ground on this and praise quite a lot of bits and pieces.
- 40:54I think Although Victor modern. Falls into being up by this
- 41:01stage. We've had a lot of show T base.
- 41:03Commander's, I'm going to nominate Victor matter and
- 41:05because he seems to he's quite big name for the series.
- 41:13Yeah, and he does, he does it. The rule says he does it
- 41:17justice? It's probably one of the better
- 41:20base. Commander's of this series of
- 41:21that era. I'm gonna nominate here, being
- 41:27wouldn't be Robeson. Awful to work for him but it's
- 41:32quite fun. Watching him having a nervous
- 41:34breakdown yes that's videos. Which sort of makes, it makes
- 41:38his wickedness, it balances out a wee bit.
- 41:41Well I could mention the direction I could mention like
- 41:45the domestic angle. This story takes actually, I
- 41:49want to single out, Megan Jones because it could have been a
- 41:52very tossed, her own field Doctor, Who story, and then she
- 41:56steps in in episode 4. And is brilliant, and we sort of
- 42:03very commanding, very smart believes dr.
- 42:07Straight away, like nobody else knows, she's also viz Zoo, who's
- 42:12the solution in this room. She realizes her is straight
- 42:14away with lovely little character touches lying,
- 42:18snapping, like her seen With Robson.
- 42:21Just a really, really strong role for a woman.
- 42:26And yeah, I always say that should be so, Applauding classic
- 42:29who oh definitely especially in that in that Yura.
- 42:35Well not what we going next. Where are we going next?
- 42:40Today, we've mentioned a lot, a ton of stories that we can do
- 42:42together, but what's the one we determined on this very podcast.
- 42:48Are we going to be doing the long game?
- 42:49Next. That's a bold Choice.
- 42:52Looks like the long game. Okay.
- 42:55Yeah, so people have just had to listen to me for six episodes.
- 42:58Let's give them a free. I think, you know, from the
- 43:02stats that actually people don't mind that so much.
- 43:06Each to their own all right? Indeed long game.
- 43:09Okay, the mighty jagrafess of the Holy, the mighty jagrafess
- 43:13of the Holy hydrojet, hardly had to just sit Max Roden, Fulani
- 43:17that on purpose, doesn't it? So you can't say it.
- 43:19That's correct. Halibut.
- 43:20Aureus that to Simon Pegg? Is that fabulous woman Kafka?
- 43:28I think she's pretty good in that as well.
- 43:30She's good at. You've got a Maxwell Martin in
- 43:33it as well. The ultimate top of Doctor Who
- 43:36Christopher Eccleston home. Wow, that sounds absolutely
- 43:44marvellous for determine a date and I will just say to you until
- 43:48next time, thank you very much for your time.
- 43:51Bye.
