- 1:30well, now it's time for today's episode of Yours Truly Johnny Dollar our
- 1:34first nineteen fifty seven episode, the Ellen Dere Matter from Hollywood. It's time
- 1:41now for Johnny Dollar Pat McCracken n universally Just Oh, hi, Brad,
- 1:49what's on your mind? The sleek, lovely, beautiful Ellen. On the
- 1:53strength of that description, I'll take care. And she's loaded dollars worth of
- 1:57jewelry. Hey, girl needs a bodyguard. Yeah, Johnny needs a guard
- 2:02of some kind. Unless he isn't the guru, he's a vote. I've
- 2:06just lost my enthusiasm. What's the matter with the old cup? That's what
- 2:08I want you to find out, Johnny. That lands crag suddenly got me
- 2:12interested again. Okay, Pat, I'll be right over Bob Bailey and the
- 2:23Exciting Adventures of the Man with the action packed Expenser count America's fabulous freelance insurance
- 2:30investigators, Truly Johnny Dollar. Expense accounts submitted by Special Investigator Johnny Dollar the
- 2:49Western Maritime and Property Insurance Company, Los Angeles, California. Following is an
- 2:53account of expenses incurred during my investigation of the Ellen dar matter. Expenser con
- 3:02had a one ninety cents taxi from my apartment of the offices of Universal Adjustment
- 3:06Bureau, and hertrig Fred McCracken's usual smile was noticeably missing when I walked in
- 3:10on him. Thanks. Oh and you're the build Western Maritime and property on
- 3:16this one instead of us. Okay, but how are you involved? We
- 3:20handle all their claims that are of any size. Tory you ever hear of
- 3:23Randolph Berman? I know of a jewelry down in New York. That's the
- 3:29one. And if you know him, Johnny, you've been putting too much
- 3:31gravy in your expensive con. I said no of him. Didn't he bring
- 3:36in the Star of Cape down and they came and do Emerald? That's right.
- 3:40Everybody seems to think he's a crook, and yet somehow he manages to
- 3:44handle some of the finest jewels in the world. Are got an honest man
- 3:46afforded? This time? It's the Bettonhouse collection. It's out of Hungary.
- 3:52Oh yeah, right about that. Only I thought somebody down in Mexico own
- 3:55it. Yeah, fellow named Rigo Mariani down in Wadalajara. He's the one
- 3:59who's sold it to Randolph Bourman. Okay, now is this Ellen, dear?
- 4:02You mentioned Burman's wife? No, no, no, former wife.
- 4:06He's in about his fifth or beautiful dumb dolls. But more important it's the
- 4:12name of his seventy two foot motor cruiser than the Burmans had been traveling around
- 4:15in it, down the coast, through the canal, along the coast of
- 4:18Central America and so on. Anyhow, when he got worried that the Bettenhouse
- 4:21collection could be had, he wasted no time in getting to Wadalajara. And
- 4:27that's where Western Maritime and Property comes in, right. They had already written
- 4:30a policy on the boat for fifty two thousand. Their main office in Los
- 4:33Angeles was close at hand, so he had them write the policy on the
- 4:38Jewel. Is that where Burman is now in Los Angeles? No, No,
- 4:41he's still in Mexico. Didn't want to move with those priceless rocks until
- 4:44he was certain of the insurance, and before Western would write it. Of
- 4:47course, they wanted the collection of prey. Actually, but who in Mexico.
- 4:51Jacques Jean Pierre, famous gemologists, was right there in Wadalahara, you
- 4:55know, to look over the collection himself. So he made the appraisal.
- 4:59The policy has been issued three hundred and twenty five thousand. I still don't
- 5:03see anything wrong with the whole deal. Pat Well, there isn't anything wrong
- 5:06with it yet. But in spite of Berman standing in the profession, his
- 5:12reputation. It isn't everything it might be. I come to think if it
- 5:15wasn't there a killing or too involved in this acquisition of the Star of several
- 5:20things like that, He's been involved in attempts to smuggle in some valuable pieces
- 5:24he's oh he always managed somehow to come out smelling like a rose. Legally
- 5:30perfectly clean, you understand, but you still don't trust. Oh No,
- 5:34And with his planning to carry that load of stuff around in his yacht.
- 5:39Yes see what you mean. If anything happened to those rocks over the boat,
- 5:43over three hundred grand right out the window exactly. Now. Relatedly,
- 5:47Western is worried about it, and they've paid good money to have you assuage
- 5:51their worries. You have a Mexican tourist, gud sure from my last fishing
- 5:56trip down there, and I think you better go down and guard that collection
- 5:59until Berman gets safely up into the States. He's considered quite the host.
- 6:02He'll probably be perfectly willing to have you aboard. Now, this is the
- 6:05kind of assignment I like, yaching in the Blue Pacific. But surely he
- 6:11hasn't got his boat park in Guadalajara. That's over one hundred miles inland.
- 6:14Oh, it's at last land, and from what I've been able to learn,
- 6:16it's surrounded by armed guards day and night. While he has some engine
- 6:20work done, but as soon as that's finished, he'll head north to the
- 6:24state. So he says, got a branch office in Los Angeles. He'll
- 6:27probably deliver the collection there. I just want to be sure he gets there.
- 6:31Johnny, hmm, okay, Pat, you can wire the boys at
- 6:35Weston that I'm on my way. Item two one hundred and ninety one forty
- 6:42Plain Fair and Incidentals Hartford, musset Land via Los Angeles. The first leg
- 6:46of the flight to LA was uneventful, except for a good looking young blonde
- 6:51from Santa Barbara, whom I promised look up as soon as his case is
- 6:56well, that's not for the expense account. When we arrived at the Los
- 6:59Angeles and An National Airport, I learned that I'd have a three quarter hour
- 7:01wait for my planing to mazzic Land, so I grabbed a magazine that's had
- 7:04him three thirty five cents. When I heard my name being called on the
- 7:08PIA system, Johnny dollars with a thought in mind that perhaps my little friend
- 7:15for the plane might have decided to stay over in La. Her name was
- 7:17readA by the way, I lost no time in getting over at the pan
- 7:20Am desk. Mister Dollars. Yeah, Johnny Dollar, that's right. I'm
- 7:25Arthur Arthur, Western Maritime and Property Insurance. Come. Oh yeah, I'm
- 7:29doing mister Arthur planning to go on down the mazzot Land with me. No,
- 7:32no, meet Monsieur Jeanques Jean Pierre. I am are you, mister
- 7:38Tempierre? This is the gentleman who are praised that Thatton How's collection plus.
- 7:41Oh yes he is. I am an as issue the policy on it to
- 7:43mister Burman. Oh yeah, yes, he's done this sort of thing for
- 7:46us many times. I'm afraid that he's brought us rather bad news. Something's
- 7:50already happened at the collection. Well, not exactly, not to the whole
- 7:54collection, please, that is I'm not quite sure what I mean is what
- 8:00do you mean? Mister? Perhaps I should explain to mister Dalla eh I
- 8:03thank somebody better. Yes, you go ahead, John very well, and
- 8:07while you're doing it, I'll cancel the rest of Miss Dallars reservation. To
- 8:09Macedlan yes, I'll do. Now wait a minute, first, let me
- 8:13find out what this is all about. We we joque here was in guade
- 8:18Laja when the Batonhouse collection became available for purchase, Yes, mister da,
- 8:22I had gone there in the hope that some of the pieces might be purchased
- 8:26separately. So alas such was not the case, the Marianni firm decided to
- 8:31dispose of the collection only a whole. I say, well, what's this
- 8:35bad news you have? Ah? I am getting into yes, please please
- 8:39please, and then go ahead yoah, thank you, thank you, mister
- 8:43interested. As I was, I looked over the collection very carefully, each
- 8:46individual piece, and you must believe me to an expert like myself. Every
- 8:52facet of Jim has a character. All the tone, a precious tone,
- 8:56is like a face to me, always to be remas yeah, well gone.
- 9:01I simply wish to make it clear to you, monsieur, that every
- 9:05item in the Better House collection is completely familiar to me, as are many
- 9:09other important games throughout the world. You know, each is like a friend,
- 9:11and a stone in him is like a face. Precisely or where is
- 9:16to be remembered? Yes, well, the collection is purchased by Monsieur Randolph
- 9:20Berman. Yes, yes, please please, he wishes to ensure it in
- 9:24Monsieur Athur's company. Yeah, I know all, miss Arthur replaced by telephone
- 9:28that I appraise it three hundred and twenty five thousands. Ah, then you
- 9:31know, I know. So I stay at Golahara a few days to wait
- 9:35Monsieur Arthur's check for my service. Please, I visited some of my old
- 9:41friend among the duel settons, and then then on the third day, what
- 9:46do you think happens? You tell me, Jenny, this is it?
- 9:52Please answer? In the shop of my friend Garcia and no days I watched
- 9:58him work on the mound for a beautiful diamond, and suddenly I see that
- 10:03this stone is an old friend one from the patent house collection. We the
- 10:07CALIBERG diamond that was supposedly in the position of Monsieur Bourman. You're sure of
- 10:13the identity of that stone, mister Jean Pierre. Please, as I told
- 10:16you, Monsieur, I press your stone to me. Yeah, it's like
- 10:20a face to you. So what you figure, Arthur, is that you've
- 10:24ensured a boatload of three hundred thousand dollars worth of gems on the way to
- 10:26the USA, and maybe they're not on board exactly unless, of course,
- 10:31mister Jean Pierre, did you tell mister Berman about this one stone Blo.
- 10:33I went immediately to matstt Land, where I knew he had his book The
- 10:37L and D Or what did he say at last? He at the way?
- 10:41Did you learn his destination? Oh? Yeah, a Los Angeles Johnny
- 10:45right here, he has a branch office. Well has he had time to
- 10:48get here yet? I don't think so. Have you tried radioly to his
- 10:50yacht? No, no, I've done nothing. You see, I didn't
- 10:52learn about this until mister Jean Pierre arrived just a few hours ago. Yes,
- 10:56I came up in the areoplane. The better to arrive and speak with
- 10:58mister there before Monsieur Berman. You know where Burman plans to dock his both
- 11:05Probably the port in San Pedro if he's coming here, but who can be
- 11:09sure. Usually on vacation trips he docks down the coast of Balboa, the
- 11:13yacht club or who knows he might either Yeah, he might have no intention
- 11:18of coming up to the States at all. He might not even have the
- 11:20jewels with him, he Arthur, do you know where his branch office is
- 11:26usually it's in Los Angeles. Well, actually it's in Beverly Hill. Got
- 11:28a car, then let's go. Though he couldn't quite put his finger on
- 11:35it, Arthur was convinced that Randolph Burman was up to something and that his
- 11:39insurance company was going to have to take the rack on the way in the
- 11:43vermin's Beverly Hills office. We dropped Jean Pierre at the Beverly Hilton and Tonam
- 11:46to sit tight in case we needed him again. Burman's office was in a
- 11:48nice mudern building on South Beverly Drive, tastically furnish with pictures of various famous
- 11:54jewels on the walls, but with nothing in predicative value and evidence. However,
- 11:58I did notice that one wall held a built in vault big enough for
- 12:01a reasonably sized bank. We were approached by a hand rubbing, obsequious little
- 12:05character dressed in strippered pants and cutaway coat and wearing thick glasses. Good morning,
- 12:11gentlemen. Is there any way I may be of service to you?
- 12:13Yeah? I think there is? Are you, mister Arthur? Forgive me
- 12:16I didn't recognize you for a moment. Mister Corrello, this is mister Johnny
- 12:20Duck. How do you do? Is there something I may show you,
- 12:24mister Dollar, some little babble perhaps for a charming lady. Wow, not
- 12:28at the moment. Oh, mister Arthur, there's no reason to mail this
- 12:31to you. Let me see now. Oh, yes, here is Here
- 12:35is a request for slight revision of the policy on the Betonhouse collection. Oh
- 12:39what's this? With a wire? Was sent by mister Berman just before he
- 12:43embarked for massive Land. I was going to put it in the letter form
- 12:46to be war but well I read this. Please request Arthur revise Betonhouse policies
- 12:54exclude calibar diamond value four thousand, which I have sold private party in what
- 13:01la horror? We kind of guess wrong, didn't hm, mister Carl.
- 13:09Yes, has mister Berman wired you? Whether he's coming here? Oh?
- 13:13Of course he is with that collection? When when is he going to arrive?
- 13:16And he's lovely yacht the Allendia should reach San Pedro Harbor late tonight.
- 13:20But that's what he wired me, and I intend to meet him there then
- 13:22I'm sure you won't mind if I go with you. Oh and mister Dowland
- 13:26is a special investigating investigator. Well, actually, I'm here just to help
- 13:31mister Burman protect that collection. Oh excellent, then you can arrange for the
- 13:35police escort. Yes, and alert the harbor police to guard the allendears,
- 13:37mister Benman requested, Did he request then? Oh? Indeed, But apparently
- 13:41he hasn't been worried about anything happening to the collection. Wow, he's at
- 13:45set's see. Oh surely you don't mean pirates or anything like that, and
- 13:50this modern taenae, you know something. At this point, I'm not quite
- 13:54sure what I mean or even why I'm here. Well, of course I'm
- 14:01well, of course what tark oh excuse me while I answered that, Well,
- 14:05I mean that is why. Well, at least I'll feel better when
- 14:11the stuff is here in the ball. Oh no. Correlo at the phone
- 14:16paled visibly, then gasped and clutched the back of a chair for support.
- 14:20As he listened to the phone, his jaw dropped, his eyes widened,
- 14:24and he shook his head once or twice and horrified disbelief. Finally, slowly,
- 14:28he hung up and came unsteadily toward us. Mister Corilla, Yeah,
- 14:31what is it, miss Corilla? That the coast guard? Yes, they
- 14:37said the Ellender, Yes sunk and six hundred feet of water and the altar
- 14:46Cha, Act too of yours truly, Johnny Dollar, in just a moment
- 15:07democracy? What has it to do with money, the medium of exchange of
- 15:11mankind? A couple of thousand years ago, it was said that money alone
- 15:16sets the world in motion. That's one way of saying that money and economy
- 15:20are virtually one and the same thing. The economy of a nation depends on
- 15:26its commerce. Commerce depends on manufacturing and services. It has been proven that
- 15:31those nations which practice democracy have the greatest economics. That means money, more
- 15:37money for more people, and a greater freedom of opportunity to earn a higher
- 15:41standard of living. That's why democracy provides mankind with its richest legacy of freedom.
- 15:48Now, act too of yours truly, Johnny Dollar, and the Ellender
- 15:52matter expense account had him four seven dollars even for a fast taxi ride a
- 16:03Coast Guard headquarters in San Pedro, which is really the port of Los Angeles.
- 16:07By then, of elbowing my way in, I got directly to Captain
- 16:10Bonnie Thorson. You've got only half the story, mister Dallan. All I
- 16:14know Captain is that the Ellendar went down at some six hundred feet of water
- 16:17in the outer channel, total loss. That's correct. However, what you
- 16:21don't know is that the passengers, mister and Missus Burman and the crew were
- 16:25picked up and brought in here. Oh, outside of a little soaking and
- 16:29a little scare, they were probably all right. You see, the Ellen
- 16:33Dear, he had apparently had some engine trouble before she left massive Land,
- 16:36and so I understand the Mexican authority is with whom we fully cooperate, notified
- 16:40as we'd better keep an eye out for her. So when she reached the
- 16:42channel, we weren't surprised to get a radio call from her asking us to
- 16:45stand by that universal jount was kicking up. Is that what happened? By
- 16:52the time one of our cutters got withinhaling distance, she was on the way
- 16:55down. The propeller shaft had whip loose going through the hull, and Ellen
- 17:00Dear was sinking fast. Ask me that boat was overpowered, Dolly, how
- 17:03do you mean? Well, it must have been because sheer tuck tore the
- 17:07whole engine loose from its mountings and it plowed through the bottom along with everything
- 17:11else on board that was heavy with a big safe. For instance, an
- 17:15could admitted a safe a save you know, a small heavy steel vault right
- 17:18now that went down to with the engine. With all our boys could do
- 17:22to keep the owner from diving over after it was crying like a baby.
- 17:27You'd think you'd had the Crown jewels in it. Maybe you're not too wrong
- 17:33at that, right, Not the Crown jewels perhaps, but a collection worth
- 17:37something over three hundred grand. What about salvage salvage operations and six hundred feet
- 17:44of water in that channel? Yeah, no, dolly, salvage even if
- 17:48it were possible, it cost a couple of times the worth of that stuff.
- 17:51At least the only passages were the burman's. Huh, that's ray proved
- 17:55three and they weren't able to save anything, nothing, not of any consequence.
- 17:59That is, one of the crew didn't even have his shoes and his
- 18:02shirt on. What about Berman and his wife? It's funny what people who
- 18:06are doing in an emergency sometimes. What do you mean, Well, you've
- 18:08heard about the man whose house catches fire. He's panicky, throws all the
- 18:12china and the glassware out the window and carries out the mattress. What are
- 18:17you getting at, Captain? The only thing Burman saved in his excitement was
- 18:21two beat up old hats and the fishing rids. Oh yeah, and all
- 18:25his wife brought along was a handful of nylon stockings. She was hanging on
- 18:29him for dear life. Oh yeah, a big hat box for the Knevening
- 18:32dress, half hanging out of it. And that's all. That's all.
- 18:34Hey, you know that missus Burman's quite a dish, not too bright,
- 18:38but we a looker. Where are they now? Captain? They headed for
- 18:41Beverly Hills, Beverly, Wiltshire was the hotel. I think any event,
- 18:45Dollar, I'm afraid your company is going to have a big fat claim to
- 18:51pay on the yacht. Yes, what's that means? What do you think?
- 19:00IDAM five three twenty long distance call to the police in mazac Land.
- 19:03I wanted to be sure that the Betonhouse collection had been on board the Ellander
- 19:07when she left port. Down there, Inspector Romulo assured me it had that
- 19:11he'd checked the safe on the boat himself before allowing it to sail. Furthermore,
- 19:15he had insisted his own maritime service keep tabs on it up to the
- 19:18point where it had made contact with the US Coast Guard. In other words,
- 19:21the loot couldn't very well have been passed to someone else at sea.
- 19:25I HadAM six five eighty cab fair to Beverly Hills, where I dropped in
- 19:27at Berman's office. No, mister Dollar, he and missus Bermon are at
- 19:30the Beverly Wiltshire. I'm sure you understand it's been necessary for them to buy
- 19:34a lot of clothes and things. Yeah, but he will come here,
- 19:37Oh yes, yes, Indeed from his last phone call, i'd say he'll
- 19:41be here within the hour. All right, then I'll come back. Please
- 19:44ask him to stick around and wait for me if he doesn't mind, of
- 19:47course, mister Dollar, I should be glad to. Oh, incidentally,
- 19:48he has had me phone mister Arthur and ask that claim forms for both the
- 19:52Betonhouse collection and the loss of the cruiser be brought here to the office just
- 19:56as quickly as possible. Yeah, I'd figured as much. Burman wasn't wasting
- 20:06any time. All I know, there still wasn't any concrete evidence that Berman
- 20:11was trying to pull a fast one night Ostensively. The only reason for my
- 20:14trip out here was to watch over that fabulous duel collection. A lot of
- 20:18good I'd been. He lost the collection and his boats and the company he'd
- 20:22have to pay. Then a wild idea hit me. I suddenly remembered something
- 20:27that had happened months ago, last July, to be exact, what a
- 20:32big passenger liner, the Andrea Doria, had sunk off the Atlantic coast.
- 20:37According to the papers. When the survivors were brought into the port, the
- 20:40usual customs inspection was waived. And it occurred to me at the time that
- 20:45every one of those people could have easily smuggled in anything he could carry or
- 20:48conceal in his clothing. I'm not saying it did happen. I'm sure it
- 20:52didn't, but it could have. And if such an idea occurred to me,
- 20:56why not to a man like Burman? I was already pretty well known
- 20:59for his tricks to have customs. It HadAM six twenty cents phone called to
- 21:03the coast Guarden, Captain Thorson Johnny Dollar. Captain, answer me just one
- 21:07question. Will you sure what when you brought them in? Whether Burman's required
- 21:11to pass through customs? Well, no, of course not. It hardly
- 21:15be any reason, thank you very much had him seven ten cents. Another
- 21:22call, this time to author author at Western Maritime and Property Insurance. You
- 21:26caught me in the n Johnny. I was just walking out the door when
- 21:30your way to Berman's office with a handful of claims forms. Now listen,
- 21:36get there as fast as you can, get there ahead of them, so
- 21:38that you can see if he brings anything into the office like the Betton House
- 21:41collection. What though, I doubt if he'd be that foolish, foolish or
- 21:45not, how could he, Johnny, That collection, unfortunately is at the
- 21:48bottom of the ocean. Listen to me. Keep him there, maybe on
- 21:52the pretext of having their way for me, any reason you can think of.
- 21:53I'm afraid I don't have Just hold him until I get there. Understand
- 21:56very well, Johnny, But what are you going to do, Arthur?
- 22:00I may have to break in and rob a hotel room. I went out
- 22:07and stationed myself across the street from the Beverly Wilshire. Five minutes later,
- 22:11I saw Randolph Berman walk out the front door and head east on Wilshire Boulevard
- 22:15in the direction of his office on Beverly Drive. I waited a few minutes
- 22:18to make sure he didn't turn back. Then into the hotel. At the
- 22:22desk, I learned a number of Bermont's sweet on the ninth floor. Break
- 22:26in here, it would have taken a battering ram, so I tried knocking.
- 22:34All right, all right, you don't have to bust down the doors
- 22:40matter. You forget your keen. No, get out of here, buddy,
- 22:47Randy said not to let anybody in. He's out buying us clothes.
- 22:52Or he tells you to let me in. Baby, Hey, who are
- 22:56you? R Randy sent me up here from Guadalajara. Oh you are.
- 23:03We'll have a drink. Then a girl's entitled to a couple of drinks after
- 23:07that dusing in the ocean, And you might as well what about her,
- 23:11Nandy? Yeah, husband sold in the wrong stone from that collection, so
- 23:18he gave it to him. Well then you know about it? Oh sure,
- 23:22so he could make a legit looking change in the insurance and convince everybody
- 23:26who was on the upper You sure you're from her? Nandy? You kidding?
- 23:34How else would I know about the whole deal? I don't know.
- 23:38Hey, Randy said not to let anybody in here. He'd kill me,
- 23:42don blonde, he called me, you a smart, beautiful girl like you.
- 23:48Hey, you're okay. My name's Vike. Come, I must have

- 26:32out that I ys come back? Opened up my hands? I do where
- 26:40I go? Right here? Behind this closet door. Quickly, Ah,

- 28:37and incidentally cleared up a couple of other of his shady deals. The

- 29:12Johnny Dall yours truly, Johnny Dollar, starring Bob Bailey, originates in
- 29:22Hollywood. It is produced and directed by Jack Johnstone, who also wrote Tonight's
- 29:26story. Heard in our cast were Virginia, Greg Laurence Dobkin, Howard mcneer,
- 29:30Jane Novello, Jack Edward, Barney Phillips, and Raymond Burr. Musical
- 29:33supervision is by A. Marigo Marino. Be sure to join us next week,
- 29:37same time and station for another exciting story of yours truly. Johnny Dollar
- 29:42Dan coverly speaking, Johnny Dollar has come to you through the worldwide facilities of
- 30:03the United States Armed Forces Radio and Television Service. Welcome back. Well,
- 31:27this one started out kind of slow, but I think ended pretty strongly.
- 31:33And I was kind of reminded with Johnny's observation about him imagining someone sneaking something
- 31:41through customs. And I observe that there are some people, and I actually
- 31:48count myself amongst them, that think of ways that things can be used for
- 31:53sinister purposes. And maybe it comes from listening to mysteries. Maybe in some
- 31:57cases it comes from right mysteries. And I actually got the I know that
- 32:05when you write mysteries at all, or have to be on the lookout for
- 32:09sinister sorts of things. And I remember seeing a friend do something and said,
- 32:16boy, that would actually really be an opportunity for someone to get some
- 32:22poison in and so I actually use that in Slime Incorporated. Sometimes you feel
- 32:28really weird about that of having those sort of thought processes, and certainly that's
- 32:34probably a case with people in security related fields. Johnny sees opportunities for fraud
- 32:39and all sorts of mouthfeasons. It just comes with the territory, all right.
- 32:45Well, some listener comments and feedback and we start from Val who says
- 32:52it's Johnny Doller's love and girlfriend here. I'm just using the BBC I Player
- 32:55to listen to series one of this wonderful series. Mcclevey, I wonder if
- 33:00you've had a chance to hear it. I'm not sure if the eye player
- 33:02is available in the US, but I think it is. I've also found
- 33:06that it's available to buy via Audible anyway. It's on BBC Radio four Extra
- 33:12for free if you can access it. Based on real life experiences of a
- 33:15detective in Edinburgh, the attict sends are a little challenging perhaps, but I
- 33:19think it's wonderful. He loves his coffee as an interracing, inter resting relationship
- 33:25with a woman who runs a house of ill repo. The star is Ryan
- 33:29Cox and I was listening to my battered old iPod yesterday shopping and laughed out
- 33:37loud when you read out my aha comment on the Chase matter. Needless to
- 33:42say, people looked at me askance best wishes from London. Well, thanks
- 33:45so much and I will try and get a listen to it. And if
- 33:49you're listening to it now, the first episode of the series will no longer
- 33:52be available by the time it comes out, but it looks like they're rerunning
- 33:59the whole first series on BBC Radio four Extra, so you can catch a
- 34:04sample of it to see if it's something that you were interested. They've done
- 34:08several series of it and you know, it is remarkable. And I've said
- 34:13it many times that while the Golden Age of radio ended in the United States,
- 34:19radio is definitely alive both in the United States and around the world as
- 34:23a dramatic form, particularly in the United Kingdom where BBC runs so many programs
- 34:30and they also have the big finish productions. Val also had a comment on
- 34:35Facebook and says, isn't a Marigo Marino a great name? I always listen
- 34:44out for him when the Johnny Dollar credits roll and Renee I shared a comment
- 34:49says when I was a child growing up in the sixties and seventies, the
- 34:52Birmingham, Alabama Symphony Orchestra would have concerts for school children from the entire area
- 34:58for a small fee. We would be bust into downtown for the concerts.
- 35:01The conductor was Amerigo Marino. Hearing the name on Johnny Dollar did not connect
- 35:07with me until Adam mentioned it once he had left CBS to go to Alabama
- 35:14to conduct. In Alabama, it was pronounced amor ammor rego, not amigo.
- 35:27I hope I pronounced the pronunciations correctly if I didn't apologize, but I
- 35:34did decide to Derek, thanks so much for sharing, and I'm glad that
- 35:37you got to enjoy his other conducting work because this Johnny Dollar remains just incredibly
- 35:44a well scored program. Well, that will do it for today. Join
- 35:47us back here tomorrow when we will bring you police headquarters, and then next
- 35:53Friday it'll be yours, truly, Johnny Dollar. In the meanwhile, send
- 35:58your comments to Box thirty henat Great Detectives dot Net from Boise, Idaho.
- 36:04This is your host, Adam Grahamson and all
