- 0:00Welcome to Tabernacle Talk. Tabernacle Talk is a Bible study
- 0:03podcast brought from Tabernacle Baptist Church in Essex, MD.
- 0:07I'm your host, Brian Self. We hope this podcast encourages
- 0:10you to know Christ, grow in his word, and show his love to
- 0:14others. Let's dive right in.
- 0:15Welcome back to Tabernacle Talk. Today we are in first Timothy
- 0:18chapter 4 and verses 6 through 10.
- 0:22First Timothy 4/6 through 10 and in these verses we're going to
- 0:27see contrary to what we learned last episode of not following
- 0:33the false teachers and what they were trying to teach the church
- 0:37at Ephesus. Paul was instead telling his son
- 0:41in the faith Timothy, that as he was helping to lead the church
- 0:45at Ephesus. Here is the here were the things
- 0:48that Timothy should be teaching. Here's the things that he should
- 0:52be practicing with in his own life for you today.
- 0:56This is like great game plan for your week.
- 1:01So the day that I'm recording, this is a Monday.
- 1:05This is releasing on a Tuesday. And so for you for Tuesday
- 1:11throughout the end of this week, you can find out from today's
- 1:14passage. Here's what you need to know and
- 1:17here's what you need to do. Verse #6 Paul says if you point
- 1:23these things out to the brothers and sisters.
- 1:26So that's what the false teachers were saying.
- 1:29Point out that this is not God's way or God's will.
- 1:33So this is if you point these things out to the brothers and
- 1:36sisters, you will be a good servant of Christ Jesus,
- 1:40nourished by the words of the faith and the good teaching that
- 1:43you have followed. You want to have like spiritual
- 1:47food and encouragement for your life.
- 1:50Listen to good teaching that falls in line with the Word of
- 1:55God. This is one of the reasons why I
- 1:58really, really, really encourage people.
- 2:01Don't just allow like a Sunday morning sermon to be the only
- 2:05time that you are in the Word of God.
- 2:07We need to be fed. We need to be nourished through
- 2:11good faithful gospel teaching. And so this is what Paul here
- 2:16encourages Timothy to do. You want to be a good servant of
- 2:20Christ Jesus. Listen to sound teaching verse
- 2:24#7 he says. But have nothing to do with
- 2:27pointless and silly myths. Rather, train yourself in
- 2:32godliness. There will be people that
- 2:34constantly want to talk about or obsess over minutia in the Word
- 2:42of God or outlandish theories. Possibilities that in no way
- 2:48could you emphatically prove or disprove from scripture.
- 2:53But those are not the people that we need to be modeling our
- 2:57lives after. Those aren't the people that we
- 2:59should spend a bunch of time arguing with.
- 3:04If someone wants to be, if you will, pedantic about the Word of
- 3:07God, if they want to just constantly be trying to argue
- 3:12with you about minor spiritual things, that's not someone that
- 3:18you should spend time listening to.
- 3:19It's not something that you should waste your time doing.
- 3:23That can look like a bunch of different things in today's
- 3:26world. That could be someone that is
- 3:30super obsessed with, let's say, what the early church did in a
- 3:39way that is totally bereft of what is spoken about in the New
- 3:44Testament. So I'll just give one example.
- 3:48I have like my personal convictions on ideally how often
- 3:53a church should observe the Lord's Supper.
- 3:56And I have especially from looking at some of the earliest
- 4:01Christian documents that we have from the 2nd and 3rd centuries.
- 4:05I could say, well, here the the Christians during that time
- 4:09period, here's how often they observe the Lord's Supper.
- 4:13And so we need to do that as well.
- 4:15And I could be really insistent on that.
- 4:18However, Scripture doesn't command that specific practice.
- 4:25And so that to me would seem to be, here's something that's not
- 4:30directly commanded in Scripture. And so I can obsess over it and
- 4:34I can make a big deal about it and make a stink of it to
- 4:36everyone that will listen. But I don't think that that
- 4:39would serve people well. And so even though it would be
- 4:42my personal conviction and belief, I don't have to convince
- 4:45everyone else in the world about it.
- 4:48Same type of thing happens with the Old Testament and what are
- 4:53called the the Nephilim or the giants, the sons of God and the
- 4:57daughters of men. I have my belief from Scripture
- 5:00on what that is. I believe it's testified about
- 5:03within Scripture. And you know, Christian history
- 5:08and exegetical work would at least convince me.
- 5:14Yeah, this is in the ballpark of that.
- 5:16But I know many, many, many godly people that take a
- 5:20different position. I'm not going to waste my time
- 5:22talking about or arguing with another person about who the
- 5:26Nephilim are. I'm not going to hijack a, you
- 5:29know, small group or Sunday school class or something to go.
- 5:33OK, well here's the reason why I think that this is this.
- 5:35No, it it's not worth it. Even when I'm talking with
- 5:39people within my own church. You guys know, I did a
- 5:42Tabernacle talk on why I am a Baptist or what do Baptist
- 5:47believe? I forget what the title of it
- 5:49was, but you guys know, as you've been listening to
- 5:53Tabernacle talk, me being a Baptist has come up, you know,
- 5:58maybe I think 5 to 10 times other than in like, you know,
- 6:02the church name or something, it's only come up like 5 to 10
- 6:07times over the course of several 106 hundred 700 episodes.
- 6:14And that's intentional because the Bible isn't concerned about,
- 6:21you know, there there's no portion of Scripture that says
- 6:23thou shalt be a Baptist or thou shalt be an Episcopalian or a
- 6:26Catholic or Eastern Orthodox or Presbyterian.
- 6:29And so because it's not the focus of the Bible, it's not
- 6:33something that as I'm walking through the Bible that I want to
- 6:36be teaching, I want to tell you guys, this is what the Bible
- 6:39says. This is how it points to Jesus.
- 6:40Here's the gospel. And so here's what we believe
- 6:44and what we practice and how we treat other people as a result
- 6:47of what the Bible says. I want the important things that
- 6:51I teach you guys to be what the Bible deems as important, what
- 6:55the Bible spends time talking about.
- 6:57So people that are super, super into, well, here's all the
- 7:01reasons why you need to be a Calvinist.
- 7:03Here's all the reasons why you need to be a provisionist or a
- 7:05Mullinist or an Armenian. Here's all of the reasons why
- 7:10you know this, that, or the other.
- 7:13These things that are not clearly taught or instructed or
- 7:17commanded in the Scripture. Here's the reasons why you need
- 7:20to believe or teach these things.
- 7:21Don't listen to those kinds of people.
- 7:23Instead, as Paul says, rather train yourself in godliness that
- 7:30what you need to be working out is not like an airtight an
- 7:37airtight argument for any, you know, particular thing that
- 7:41could be a myth, might or might not be true, could be or might
- 7:46not be. Don't waste your time on those
- 7:49or arguing about that with people.
- 7:50Instead, exercise yourself in godliness that you are becoming
- 7:53like God. You are learning and
- 7:56exemplifying the fruit of the Spirit.
- 7:59So that's that. Lovejoy, peace, patience,
- 8:01long-suffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness and
- 8:04self-control like that is what we need to be giving ourselves
- 8:08to because we know that that is true.
- 8:10We know that that is God's will for us, that we begin looking
- 8:14more and more like like Jesus each and every day.
- 8:17Frankly, someone can be incredibly theologically sound
- 8:22and they can, you know, learn and say and do all of the things
- 8:28in line with everything that I would teach.
- 8:31But if they are not godly people, if they're not
- 8:36exhibiting the fruit of the Spirit, then all of that
- 8:38knowledge is just wasted. It's like Satan knows Psalm 91,
- 8:43but it doesn't do him any good because like, he's not using the
- 8:47knowledge of that Psalm to obey the Lord.
- 8:50He's using that knowledge to try and, you know, tempt Jesus and
- 8:55to, you know, guide worship towards himself and dictate
- 8:59God's actions, things like that. And So what Paul tells Timothy
- 9:04and what I'm telling you guys, exercise yourself, Train
- 9:07yourself in godliness here. One of the things that would
- 9:12kind of be in mind is like for a sport, or it wasn't the Olympic
- 9:16Games at this time, but that kind of sport mindset is you are
- 9:22to be a pro athlete in behaving and speaking like Jesus.
- 9:28Now, if you're like me, you're like, man, that is a really tall
- 9:31ass. I don't know if I can do that.
- 9:34The truth is you and I cannot do it.
- 9:36But the Holy Spirit of God living inside of us, he can do
- 9:39it. It's not the fruit of the Brian
- 9:41or the fruit of the, you know, Myron.
- 9:45It's the fruit of the Spirit. And so as we just allow the
- 9:49Spirit to take root in our life, that when he tells us to do
- 9:53something, we say yes. When he tells us you shouldn't
- 9:55have done that, we say, OK, I'm, I'm, you know, trimming that out
- 9:59of my life and pruning that out of my life that we allow the
- 10:03Spirit to, to bring about his fruit within our life.
- 10:09Verse #8 continues in this thought, For the training of the
- 10:12body has limited benefit, but godliness is beneficial in every
- 10:17way since it holds promise for the present life and also for
- 10:22the life to come here. He does not say the training of
- 10:26the body has zero benefit. I will level with you guys.
- 10:30You know, we're 10 minutes into this thing.
- 10:33Anyone that washes these nose like I'm not the world's
- 10:38skinniest guy. One of the things that I know
- 10:42that I need to be consistently working on is making sure that
- 10:46my diet and my exercise is consistent, not strictly so
- 10:52that, you know, I can see one specific number on the scale,
- 10:56but so that I can exercise self-control, which is a fruit
- 11:00of the spirit. I don't want anyone to ever be
- 11:04like, oh man, it's just one of those fat Baptist preachers
- 11:07again. And I'm, I'm not going to listen
- 11:09to him because he can't even exercise self-control.
- 11:12And so he just wants everyone else to change what they're
- 11:15doing and he can't even control himself.
- 11:18I don't want that to be the case.
- 11:21And so that's something that I want to consistently pursue and
- 11:24I want to encourage you guys like pursue, pursue self-control
- 11:28in your life as well. And it is good for us.
- 11:32I want to be able to play with my kids and to have a great time
- 11:37and to be there for all the various moments of their life.
- 11:40I, I want to be able one day to, you know, be running around and,
- 11:45and playing and wrestling and having a great time with my
- 11:48grandkids, should the Lord give me grandkids.
- 11:52So I want to invest now so that in the future I am continuing to
- 12:00reap benefits from exercising bodily there.
- 12:05He says the training of the body that it has limited benefit.
- 12:11I can be super fit. I can have, you know, I, I can
- 12:15have a Arnold Schwarzenegger's body from, you know, however
- 12:19many decades ago when he was a bodybuilder.
- 12:22I could have just this amazing body and it would not do
- 12:26anything for my eternity. And a lot of the people that you
- 12:30know, are bodybuilders. You have to give up so many
- 12:34things in your family, you know, Olympic athletes, there's so
- 12:38many things that they have to say no to, even in relationships
- 12:42that they are not able to experience, you know, a, a great
- 12:46life now. And then when they get to
- 12:49eternity, God's like, oh man, you were a bodybuilder.
- 12:51That's awesome. Enter into the Kingdom.
- 12:53That's not how any of that works.
- 12:55So bodily exercise it, it, it profits a little bit.
- 12:59It's got some limited benefit, he says, but godliness is
- 13:03profitable and everything it it has a promise for the present
- 13:08life that as we look and act and think and behave like Jesus in
- 13:13the here and now man that will bless every person that we come
- 13:16into contact with. And he says, and also for the
- 13:19life to come, that what we do now effects our future one day
- 13:24in eternity, that the seeds that we plant now of God, leliness,
- 13:29it will flourish, it will come to fruition in the afterlife.
- 13:35And So what we, what we choose to invest in in our spiritual
- 13:42life now is really, really important.
- 13:45You might think, OK, I, I was kind to that person today.
- 13:49I don't really know what I gained from that.
- 13:51You won't know until you either die or Jesus comes back.
- 13:56And when that happens, you'll go, oh man, I never, I never
- 14:00pictured that that would be the result of when I was kind, you
- 14:05know, 300 years ago. I didn't know that now I would
- 14:10be experiencing this or this would be the reward for that.
- 14:15I I love the verse that Paul says.
- 14:17I think it's in Second Corinthians.
- 14:19Eye is not seen, nor has ear heard, nor has entered into the
- 14:23heart of man the things that God has prepared for those that love
- 14:26him. So invest in your spiritual
- 14:29life. Spend time in the word, spend
- 14:31time in prayer, listen to preaching, go to church
- 14:35regularly, be a part of a small group.
- 14:37All of those things will help you invest into your spiritual
- 14:40life and then actually do something as a result of what
- 14:45God's word is that is being spoken into your life.
- 14:49Like actually do something with it.
- 14:51Have godliness. Don't just be a recipient of so
- 14:55much of God's teaching, actually do something with it.
- 14:58Verse #9 This saying is trustworthy and deserves full
- 15:02acceptance. For this reason we labor and
- 15:05strive because we have put our hope in the living God who is
- 15:09the Savior of all people, especially of those who believe.
- 15:14So we labor. Here Paul is saying in a
- 15:16ministry context of leading people to faith in Christ and
- 15:19helping them in their walk with the Lord.
- 15:20He says, Timothy, This is why we do what we do, why we labor and
- 15:24strive, why we work hard. It is because we have put our
- 15:29hope in the living God, that God who lives, this God who
- 15:34conquered the grave, this God who is resurrected and will live
- 15:38forever. This God saves all kinds of
- 15:42people, and he says he's the Savior of all people, especially
- 15:47of those who believe Jesus is the Savior.
- 15:51There is no other savior for mankind like Jesus, is it?
- 15:56Contrast some things that I've seen on the Internet.
- 15:59This does not mean that every person will be saved regardless
- 16:04of how they respond to Jesus and who he is.
- 16:09Only those that believe in Jesus will experience the salvation of
- 16:13Jesus, that Jesus is the Savior of all mankind.
- 16:20No one will be saved outside of Jesus.
- 16:22But that also means then then you do have to believe in Jesus
- 16:27in order to be saved. I'll, I'll throw this in there
- 16:32as well as kind of a throwaway thing.
- 16:34I don't say that in a kind of smug version of Oh yeah, I just
- 16:44can't wait for people to go to hell.
- 16:46Honestly, it would throw me to death if God at the end of my
- 16:51life was like, oh hey, actually what Jesus did on the cross, it
- 16:56did pay in full for everyone's sin.
- 16:58And so everyone is going to heaven, Everyone will be
- 17:01transformed by what Jesus did on the cross, and so everyone will
- 17:06experience eternal life and no one will go to hell.
- 17:09Like if that happened at the end of my life, I wouldn't be like,
- 17:11oh man, I just really wanted people to go to hell.
- 17:14No, I'd be thrilled. However, from what God has said
- 17:17in His Word, God allows us to be able to actually make that
- 17:22choice, to say yes to Jesus, yes to eternal life.
- 17:26Or if we refuse God's path of life, which is Jesus Christ,
- 17:30then all that has left for us is the eternal destruction of our
- 17:34souls in hell. And so here, end of the episode,
- 17:39I want to encourage you share your faith.
- 17:41It's an important thing. Jesus is the savior and he's not
- 17:44the savior of the rich people, the poor people, the white
- 17:48people, the brown people, the black people, like Jesus is the
- 17:50savior of all people. There is no category of human
- 17:54that Jesus did not die to save. And so I want to encourage you
- 17:59share your faith. It is a good thing and you can
- 18:01labor and you can work. Knowing that the work that we
- 18:05do, it is important because it's centered on Jesus.
- 18:09It's not centered on myths. It's not centered on even self
- 18:12improvement. What we do as Christians is we
- 18:16say man, Jesus paid it all and then he gave me the Holy Spirit.
- 18:20And as I allow the Holy Spirit to do in and through me what He
- 18:25wants to do, I suddenly find that my life has this trait that
- 18:30I could not have manufactured of godliness.
- 18:33And this godliness blesses me and those around me in this
- 18:37life. And God has promised that there
- 18:39are rewards eternally for what I do and say in the here and now.
- 18:46What a cool thought. What an amazing truth that this
- 18:50God who did not have to give me anything, He has given me
- 18:54everything. He has given me his Son.
- 18:57He has given me eternal life. He's given me redemption and
- 19:00forgiveness, He's given me his Holy Spirit, He's given me his
- 19:04Bride, the Church to strengthen and to encourage and to equip
- 19:08and to sharpen me. He has given me a home in heaven
- 19:12eternally. And he has given me a
- 19:16relationship with Him. And there is nothing greater
- 19:19than those things. Thanks for tuning in today.
- 19:20I hope that it was an encouragement to you.
- 19:22God bless.
