Transcript
- 1:39Speaker 1: I am your host. Thank you for tuning in tonight
- 1:43Speaker 1: to another episode of Delay but not denied the podcast.
- 1:47Speaker 1: I am your host, Laturnian Little John. What I will
- 1:51Speaker 1: be speaking about tonight will be depression versus anxiety. But
- 1:58Speaker 1: before I start, I will like to go to the
- 2:00Speaker 1: Lord in prayer. Heavenly Father, we come to you tonight
- 2:04Speaker 1: asking you to be in the midst of the conversation,
- 2:07Speaker 1: asking you to give a word that may go past
- 2:12Speaker 1: everything designed to take someone out dealing with depression. Heal
- 2:18Speaker 1: their minds, their hearts, and their souls. In Jesus' name,
- 2:21Speaker 1: we pray amen So. Depression, by definition, is a lack
- 2:27Speaker 1: of interest in activities that you usually enjoy, difficulty concentrating,
- 2:34Speaker 1: remembering things and making decisions, feelings of sadness, hopelessness or worthlessness, Fatigue,
- 2:43Speaker 1: fatigue and lack of energy even when you get enough sleep,
- 2:47Speaker 1: loss of appetite or increased appetite and weight gain, irritability,
- 2:52Speaker 1: anger or frustration, trouble sleeping or sleeping too much, thoughts
- 2:57Speaker 1: of death or suicide, crying for no reason. Anxiety is restlessness,
- 3:05Speaker 1: shortness of breath, feeling like you're going to pass out,
- 3:10Speaker 1: chest pain or tightness, pounding heartbeats or racing posts, hot
- 3:16Speaker 1: or cold flashes, sweating, chills, dizziness, instability or feeling faint,
- 3:23Speaker 1: trouble concentrating and thinking clearly, muscle tension, fate fatigue and
- 3:29Speaker 1: low energy, sleeping problems including insomnia, night terrors and restless
- 3:38Speaker 1: leg syndrome, upset stomach or nausea, poor concentration, and trouble
- 3:45Speaker 1: making decisions. Also irritability, And so when you bring all
- 3:51Speaker 1: of that together, it takes you on a spiral if
- 4:01Speaker 1: not managed correctly. You know a lot of people have
- 4:07Speaker 1: one or the other, but then you have people that
- 4:10Speaker 1: have both. For me, I do deal with both, along
- 4:16Speaker 1: with abandonment issues from being adopted and just everyday life
- 4:24Speaker 1: has brought new things as I've gotten older, having children,
- 4:31Speaker 1: being married, being separated, and things you know that happen
- 4:35Speaker 1: from that can easily cause depression. But the thing of
- 4:39Speaker 1: it is is to be able to recognize what you're
- 4:43Speaker 1: going through and get the help that you need. And
- 4:48Speaker 1: you know, prayer without works is dead. So if you're
- 4:52Speaker 1: praying your way through it, you need to be doing
- 4:54Speaker 1: the work to make sure you're on the other side
- 4:57Speaker 1: of your healing, because just prayer it praying about it
- 5:01Speaker 1: is not. It doesn't go away like that. That's not
- 5:05Speaker 1: how my guide works. So you know, if there's ever
- 5:12Speaker 1: a moment where you feel like you're on the edge
- 5:19Speaker 1: and you need someone to talk to, there are a
- 5:24Speaker 1: number of people that you can reach out to, different
- 5:30Speaker 1: hotlines that you can go with too, you know, to
- 5:35Speaker 1: help you maintain what you're thinking and the right way
- 5:39Speaker 1: to think it. It's not easy. I won't lie to
- 5:44Speaker 1: say that it is, because it is not. It's actually
- 5:49Speaker 1: hard taking medications, finding out which ones work, because some
- 5:54Speaker 1: of them work better than the others, Some cause weight gain,
- 5:59Speaker 1: some no appetite, issues with sleeping and things like that.
- 6:07Speaker 1: So just having to figure out which medicine is going
- 6:15Speaker 1: to work for you is the hard part. We all
- 6:23Speaker 1: need help. We all should be able to act for help.
- 6:27Speaker 1: There's there's no reason that we all should suffer in silence.
- 6:36Speaker 1: I wasn't really prepared tonight because I got so much
- 6:41Speaker 1: going on that I thought my my show was next Friday.
- 6:44Speaker 1: But I was wrong. Got to apologize however, again it's
- 6:50Speaker 1: it's mental health. My mental health is uh nosedy. But
- 6:55Speaker 1: I am doing what I'm supposed to be doing to
- 6:59Speaker 1: get myself back contract and to be a better version
- 7:02Speaker 1: of myself for myself and for the people that love
- 7:06Speaker 1: me and depend on me. So right now I'm taking
- 7:12Speaker 1: any questions. If you have any questions or anything that
- 7:16Speaker 1: you would like to know about depression or how I
- 7:20Speaker 1: deal with depression, feel free to ask. I don't mind.
- 7:27Speaker 1: I feel like you know, Black people in general, especially
- 7:32Speaker 1: black men, have a hard time when it comes to
- 7:35Speaker 1: expressing your feelings, and you should be able to express without,
- 7:42Speaker 1: you know, being ridiculed for your feelings, because your feelings matter,
- 7:48Speaker 1: You matter. And so I say all of that to say, please, please,
- 7:54Speaker 1: please reach out to somebody. As I said before, there
- 7:58Speaker 1: are numerous things, places or you know, phone numbers that
- 8:03Speaker 1: you can call to get help. You don't have to
- 8:08Speaker 1: go through it alone, which is a good thing. And
- 8:11Speaker 1: if you have friends that love you like they say
- 8:16Speaker 1: they do, they can tell when you are on the edge.
- 8:21Speaker 1: So having somebody that loves you enough to get you
- 8:25Speaker 1: off the edge, or at least step on the edge
- 8:28Speaker 1: to pull you back says a lot about the type
- 8:32Speaker 1: of friends that you choose to have. Someone asks the
- 8:39Speaker 1: question do you think depression and anxiety are all that different?
- 8:45Speaker 1: And in a way they are and in some ways
- 8:51Speaker 1: they're not. But it all depends. It's a person, the
- 8:57Speaker 1: person's situation. DD says, when you have those off days,
- 9:01Speaker 1: how do you get back on track? She said, she
- 9:04Speaker 1: loves singing and that helps. So for me, it's it's
- 9:07Speaker 1: the singing and the dancing. I am here ninety percent
- 9:14Speaker 1: of the time on my own and so I listen
- 9:18Speaker 1: to music that uplifts my spirit, whether that be R
- 9:26Speaker 1: and B or you know, gospel or what have you.
- 9:29Speaker 1: I'm trying to always always be my best version of me.
- 9:36Speaker 1: So whatever music it may go, from Kirk Franklin to Usha,
- 9:43Speaker 1: it just whatever my soul needs at the moment is
- 9:47Speaker 1: what I do. I write a journal. I have a
- 9:53Speaker 1: burn book, and I think everybody should invest in a
- 9:57Speaker 1: burn book and you can get them on Amazon or
- 10:00Speaker 1: Target dot com and I got mine from Target. But
- 10:06Speaker 1: it asks you questions and it causes you to face
- 10:10Speaker 1: your own reality. You have to get to know you
- 10:16Speaker 1: all over again, and it has helped me a lot.
- 10:21Speaker 1: Am I completely healed? Absolutely not. I'm on my way, yes,
- 10:28Speaker 1: But you know there's no timetable on your healing. You
- 10:33Speaker 1: just gotta do the work. And with that being said,
- 10:39Speaker 1: just keep your hand in God's hand is one thing
- 10:46Speaker 1: that I will say. It's not always easy. And I
- 10:54Speaker 1: say God because God is who I follow. But to
- 10:59Speaker 1: whomever is watching that may not share the same beliefs
- 11:03Speaker 1: as I do, I understand, I get it. But cling
- 11:06Speaker 1: to whatever entity that you believe, you know, keeps you
- 11:12Speaker 1: grounded and elevate it, you know, dig into that and
- 11:18Speaker 1: do the work and get in the mirror, say some
- 11:25Speaker 1: some informations over yourself, because sometimes you need to tell
- 11:30Speaker 1: yourself I am worthy, I am important, I am loved,
- 11:35Speaker 1: I matter, I am enough, and you know, keep repeating
- 11:40Speaker 1: those things until you believe them, because if you're just
- 11:46Speaker 1: saying it to say it to have something to do,
- 11:49Speaker 1: then it's not going to go the way you need
- 11:52Speaker 1: it to go. Right. So the best thing to do
- 11:55Speaker 1: is work on your belief. If you don't believe in you,
- 12:00Speaker 1: nobody else can believe in you. So it definitely starts
- 12:04Speaker 1: with within. So again, if anybody has any questions, I'm
- 12:12Speaker 1: open to answering any questions that you may have. Anybody
- 12:19Speaker 1: have anything that they would like to share. As far
- 12:23Speaker 1: as overcoming depression, I'm here to listen to that as well.
- 12:32Speaker 1: I will say that, you know, when you go see
- 12:34Speaker 1: your doctor and you express that you have well, that
- 12:38Speaker 1: you think you may have depression or anxiety, they do
- 12:42Speaker 1: have these different questionnaires that they ask you pertaining to
- 12:49Speaker 1: what you're feeling in the moment, and that's how they
- 12:56Speaker 1: decide on what to treat you with. DD says that
- 13:03Speaker 1: she has her burned book and she writes in it
- 13:07Speaker 1: and journally really has helped her. So she said, thank you.
- 13:13Speaker 1: But my thing is and always has been, if something's
- 13:19Speaker 1: working for me, I don't gate keep, and so if
- 13:24Speaker 1: if it works for me and somebody else can benefit
- 13:27Speaker 1: from it, I'm definitely gonna talk about it. I'm gonna
- 13:29Speaker 1: share it, and if I have to go out on
- 13:33Speaker 1: a limit buy it for you and send it to you,
- 13:37Speaker 1: I don't mind. Because you're important, you're needed, you're loved,
- 13:41Speaker 1: and you deserve to be here. You deserve to be
- 13:47Speaker 1: painfree within your mind, within your heart, and just living
- 13:56Speaker 1: life to the fullest. We're not placed here to live
- 14:01Speaker 1: in fear or walk in fear that is not of God.
- 14:06Speaker 1: He doesn't want that for us, and a lot of
- 14:09Speaker 1: us struggle with that. I know I do, not knowing
- 14:14Speaker 1: one minute to the next what's going to happen and
- 14:19Speaker 1: coming up with these different conclusions of what could possibly happen.
- 14:26Speaker 1: Thinking negative before thinking positive has always been my go
- 14:30Speaker 1: to and as my friend Trevida would say, and I'm
- 14:35Speaker 1: gonna give you a mega to palten to be your feelings.
- 14:39Speaker 1: But after that's, oh well, I'm gonna need you to
- 14:42Speaker 1: shake it out, wipe your face, and get yourself together.
- 14:46Speaker 1: If you're gonna give it to God and give it
- 14:47Speaker 1: to God, you can't take it back because what you're
- 14:50Speaker 1: gonna do with it besides make a mix of it.
- 14:53Speaker 1: So I'm not gonna be before you very long. I
- 14:58Speaker 1: just wanted to jump on show up for myself because
- 15:04Speaker 1: I definitely am trying to be better at showing up
- 15:10Speaker 1: for myself when when in fact I'm dealing with emotions
- 15:16Speaker 1: of depression or anxiety. My conversation right now is coming
- 15:23Speaker 1: off as a struggle because I am currently dealing with
- 15:29Speaker 1: my anxiety portion of all of this, and it gets
- 15:35Speaker 1: me in a place of just feeling unsettled. So I
- 15:42Speaker 1: don't sit still. I'm all over the place. I've been
- 15:46Speaker 1: emotionally eating and when not eating, sleeping. I tell you,
- 15:54Speaker 1: as a joke, I feel like I might have been
- 15:56Speaker 1: a bear in my former life because I can go
- 15:58Speaker 1: to sleep and just be out. But that's also not
- 16:04Speaker 1: good because no matter what I'm dealing with, I can't
- 16:09Speaker 1: sleep it away, I can't eat it away. So I
- 16:12Speaker 1: have to do whatever's necessary for me to get this
- 16:19Speaker 1: work done and to be a better me. You know,
- 16:26Speaker 1: I'm all I got basically. You know, you have your
- 16:29Speaker 1: friends and your family and things like that, but at
- 16:33Speaker 1: the end of the day, when the day ends, it's
- 16:37Speaker 1: just you and you have to face you. At the
- 16:41Speaker 1: beginning of each day and at the end of each day,
- 16:46Speaker 1: you have to learn what your purpose is, because we
- 16:49Speaker 1: all have a purpose, even if we don't know what
- 16:52Speaker 1: it is. You have to pray and deep deep for
- 16:58Speaker 1: your purpose. Aren't doing things that you like and maybe
- 17:03Speaker 1: your purposes within that, but nobody knows if you don't
- 17:09Speaker 1: take the first step. So you have to show up
- 17:12Speaker 1: for yourself, do the work, pray, believe in yourself, believe
- 17:21Speaker 1: that you will find your destiny. A lot of us
- 17:26Speaker 1: are still out here trying to figure it out. Like
- 17:30Speaker 1: I started writing books, and within my writings, I started
- 17:36Speaker 1: to feel better just sharing stories of my life, and
- 17:43Speaker 1: I was able to talk to two of my friends
- 17:46Speaker 1: and to becoming authors and sharing their stories, and they
- 17:51Speaker 1: they're right, they're rocking it out. And you know, for me,
- 17:55Speaker 1: it's therapeutic, and I'm I'm gonna assume that it's therapeutic
- 17:59Speaker 1: for them as well. And then my best friend Trevita
- 18:04Speaker 1: got me interested in the podcast. And as much as
- 18:09Speaker 1: I'd like to talk, this has been my lane. Definitely
- 18:15Speaker 1: a part of my lane, and you know, being led
- 18:18Speaker 1: by our wonderful visionary Angela. You know we have we're
- 18:25Speaker 1: about to go in into three years. Has it been easy?
- 18:29Speaker 1: Absolutely not. Have I wanted to quit? Absolutely? Have I
- 18:33Speaker 1: thought about quitting, absolutely, But there are people in this
- 18:40Speaker 1: world that deal with things that they want to share,
- 18:45Speaker 1: and I placed my platform there for them as an
- 18:51Speaker 1: open space to not be judged no matter what their
- 18:56Speaker 1: conversation is and what it looks like. If talking about
- 19:02Speaker 1: a situation helps you, or if you're trying to help
- 19:06Speaker 1: other people seek understanding, you know, because a lot of
- 19:11Speaker 1: people judge what they don't know, and so if that's
- 19:14Speaker 1: your avenue, you know, again, my platform is open. I'm
- 19:19Speaker 1: here for anything, like even if you just need somebody
- 19:23Speaker 1: to listen, some people say that they're listening, but do
- 19:29Speaker 1: they really hear you. Are they listening to understand you,
- 19:34Speaker 1: or are they listening to give a response, Because sometimes
- 19:39Speaker 1: a response isn't necessary. Sometimes people just want you to
- 19:44Speaker 1: be present and listen. You know, you don't always have
- 19:50Speaker 1: to adje two sents, and especially if they're not asking
- 19:54Speaker 1: for it, if they're just wanting to talk, be in
- 19:57Speaker 1: a space of listening because we all need some one
- 20:00Speaker 1: to listen to. So you know, do that for those
- 20:05Speaker 1: that you love, that you claim you love, because one.
- 20:08Speaker 2: Day you may be on that that end of that
- 20:12Speaker 2: stick where you need someone to listen to you, pray
- 20:18Speaker 2: for you, hold your.
- 20:19Speaker 1: Hand, be a shoulder to cry on. You don't have
- 20:24Speaker 1: to do it alone. So just pleading with you to
- 20:30Speaker 1: love yourself enough to reach out for help, whether it's
- 20:37Speaker 1: a hot line or pastor homeover, your sister, your brother,
- 20:43Speaker 1: your mother, your father, your friend, reach out to somebody
- 20:47Speaker 1: because again, you are loved, you are important, you're needed,
- 20:52Speaker 1: and you have a story and nobody can tell your
- 20:57Speaker 1: story quite like you. So I would much rather be
- 21:03Speaker 1: that person that listens to you and be a part
- 21:08Speaker 1: of hearing you tell your story versus losing you and
- 21:14Speaker 1: hearing about you from other people. So this has been delayed,
- 21:22Speaker 1: but not deny the podcast. I thank you all for
- 21:25Speaker 1: coming out. I'll be back on Thursday with Trevida and
- 21:31Speaker 1: the rest of the ladies to talk about our new book.
- 21:36Speaker 1: So again, my name is Lutanya Little John and this
- 21:41Speaker 1: has been delayed, but not denied the podcast. I pray
- 21:44Speaker 1: everybody has a wonderful night or day, depending on where
- 21:48Speaker 1: you're watching from. I thank you for your continued love
- 21:52Speaker 1: and support. Good Night,
