- 0:01Hey everybody, welcome to the good morning from the Chicken
- 0:04Coop podcast. My name is Kim Johnson and I am
- 0:07a mastermindset coach, creative strategist, and also happen to
- 0:10be a farmer. This is my chicken coop and I
- 0:12come out here every day to record a podcast to teach
- 0:16distinctions, possibilities, new ways of thinking, and just bring
- 0:20some joy into the world. So welcome to the coop and let's
- 0:23start your day off in a fantastic way everybody.
- 0:27Happy Mother's Day as I say this from the chicken coop, watching
- 0:32a couple of hens who desperately want to be mommies and I won't
- 0:35let them sit on eggs because right now I don't have a spot
- 0:38set up for them to do that. So I'm keeping them at Bay from
- 0:42doing it. And they are very annoyed with
- 0:44me and very loud about it. But in any event, Happy Mother's
- 0:47Day, today is the day where you're supposed to be spoiled if
- 0:51you're a mom. And if you are not a mom, you
- 0:54are supposed to be spoiling someone.
- 0:56And this is always tricky when I talk to people about this, even
- 1:01on in my own world, I had to pay attention to what my mother
- 1:06wanted and or she wouldn't tell me she wanted.
- 1:09I had to look for things. I had to find ways to make her
- 1:13feel important and special and all of those things.
- 1:16And that was always hard for me. My mother was a Riddle for me in
- 1:21many ways. She didn't let me know stuff.
- 1:23She would keep things. I had to become very observant
- 1:27in order to take care of her and be able to give her the things
- 1:32that I knew she wanted, but she would never ask me for.
- 1:37Like one year I got her a massage and she was really,
- 1:41really, really upset with me for that because in giving her a
- 1:44massage, it was not something she wanted.
- 1:47It was something I would have wanted.
- 1:49She just didn't want to be touched.
- 1:51And so often like she she would hug and things like that, but
- 1:54she don't want a stranger touching her.
- 1:55And I thought, oh, this would be so nice.
- 1:58She'll get to go. Her back is always sore.
- 2:00Like she liked it when I rubbed her back, but she didn't like it
- 2:02when someone else did it or especially like a full blown
- 2:05massage. And it used to drive me crazy
- 2:08that I'm like, mom, I can't I can't help your back by rubbing
- 2:12it this way because it's not doing any good.
- 2:14You need to have like a massage. But when I sent her for one, she
- 2:17was miserable. She did not enjoy it.
- 2:19And she said, please don't do that again.
- 2:21And I never understood that. And then when I was a small
- 2:26child, like probably like 10 or 11, she, I remember she had a
- 2:30big birthday. I don't remember which one it
- 2:31was, but it was like either A0 or A5.
- 2:34And I was, you know, it committed to giving her a
- 2:37birthday party. And we were camping and I had
- 2:40set the whole thing up with my dad.
- 2:42I planned it with my dad. I really wanted to do something
- 2:45special for her. And lo and behold, as one, you
- 2:50know, my mom would have it. She got really upset with me for
- 2:53doing that. She was very unhappy with me.
- 2:56She was like, how could you do that?
- 2:58She wouldn't come outside. I don't like people.
- 3:00And I had invited lots of the campers that we camped with to
- 3:03come. And she was so upset with me and
- 3:06she wouldn't come outside. And I was crying and my dad
- 3:09didn't know what to do. And I, I was very angry about
- 3:13that for a long time. I, I was one of the reasons I
- 3:16had a struggle with my mother, because I couldn't understand
- 3:20where she was coming from. I kept thinking of things as I
- 3:23would want them, not as she would want them.
- 3:26And then once I got older and I recognized that there was
- 3:29something to this, there was a method to this thought process
- 3:33around saying, hey, you know what?
- 3:35I really have to pay attention to what someone else wants, not
- 3:39just what I want out of some like really pay attention to
- 3:43that. Because the reality is that
- 3:46these are these are important things when you're dealing with
- 3:48other people and thinking about it, you really have to look at
- 3:52what other people are asking for or looking at as what's
- 3:56important to them as opposed to what's just important to us.
- 4:01And even today, as I say this, someone out there will hear this
- 4:05and say, that's right, I didn't. They weren't listening to me.
- 4:08They got me something that was either convenient or something
- 4:11that was ideal for them but not ideal for me.
- 4:14And it makes you feel crappy. And you know what?
- 4:17It's OK if you felt crappy about it.
- 4:19It's OK. Like, I I really want you to
- 4:21know it. Yeah, I, I have the same
- 4:23experience. People don't always know.
- 4:26And you feel crappy. But our job is as a mom because
- 4:30I am a mom. And I had a mom.
- 4:33And not everybody has those exact same conditions, but I am
- 4:37a mom and I had a mom. My job is to make sure that I am
- 4:43making myself available to let them know exactly what they
- 4:46could do if they wanted to do something or just tell them to
- 4:49come up with something. They know what I like and then
- 4:52be OK with that. Or I could convey exactly what I
- 4:56would like. And sometimes it's OK to do
- 4:59that. Just convey exactly what you
- 5:00like. But understand this is a very
- 5:03emotional holiday for people and they're putting a lot of weight
- 5:08on it. They're thinking, wow, how is
- 5:12somebody going to ignore acknowledge me and my efforts
- 5:14and my work? So if you don't get acknowledged
- 5:17the way you want to acknowledge yourself, like, and I know it
- 5:21doesn't feel the same. I totally get it.
- 5:23More than you could ever know. But guess what?
- 5:26Do that for yourself and recognize that maybe I'm not
- 5:30conveying the information correctly.
- 5:32Maybe I'm waiting for other people to see it and they just
- 5:35can't. Maybe there are other ways to go
- 5:37about this, so it's time to take a peek and think about it and
- 5:40really look at it and then know that they do appreciate you,
- 5:45they do appreciate you, and they love you.
- 5:48It might not be in the way you want, but they do.
- 5:51All right, my friends, I hope you have a blessed day and I
- 5:54will see you tomorrow. Bye.
