- 0:54Speaker 1: A Hey, y'all, welcome this week's show. We are going
- 1:03to get in some really interesting information from post Barrago's
- 1:07exhaustive explanation of the Catechism in just a few minutes.
- 1:11A lot of things I don't think a lot of
- 1:13modern Catholics know, the things that are inssily taught in
- 1:19Catechism classes or rcia or ocia about Catholic funerals actually
- 1:25a very interesting You know, if you if you're creatile Catholic,
- 1:28you grew up with it, you may take a lot
- 1:30of this stuff for granted. And if you're a convert,
- 1:33it's probably going to be very new information. But first
- 1:36let's start with a couple questions and answers from radio replies.
- 1:40And the person asks, do you include marriage among the sacraments?
- 1:44So they can answer, of course, yes, every valid marriage
- 1:46between baptized Christians constitutes the sacrament of matrimony. And that
- 1:51person says, but Christ did not institute marriage. It existed
- 1:54long before his advent into this world. And they answer,
- 1:57prior to Christ, existed as a matrimony contract. But Christ
- 2:01elevated to the dignity of a sacrament of the new law.
- 2:05Christ therefore instituted matrimony as a sacrament. He blessed marriage
- 2:09by his presence at Cana and declared it's indissolubility when
- 2:13he said, what God has joined, let no man put asunder. Henceforth,
- 2:17what was formerly a union by human contract was to
- 2:20be regarded by Christians as sealed by God in a
- 2:23new and special way. And he asked, how can marriage
- 2:26be a sacrament? And they answer, A sacrament is a
- 2:28visible rite instituted by Christ for the signifying and giving
- 2:32of grace. Marriage is a visual right wistness by men.
- 2:37It has been elevated by Christ a sacramental dignity. It
- 2:40signifies something very sacred, the union of Christ and his Church.
- 2:43Of Saint Paul tells us in Ephesians five twenty two
- 2:46through thirty three, there is but one Christ and one
- 2:49true Church. So there must be one husband and one
- 2:52wife in each case. As there is no divorce between
- 2:55Christ and his Church, so there can be no divorce
- 2:57between husband and wife. And as the union between Christ
- 3:01and the Church results in the production of grace, so
- 3:04this sacred union of marriage conveys grace to the contracting parties,
- 3:08or that they may rightfully fulfill their duties to each
- 3:10other and to their children for the love of God.
- 3:14The person says, marriage is a legal status, not subject
- 3:17to any law spiritual, and the presensor if no law
- 3:20spiritual governs marriage, why did Christ say, but I say
- 3:24unto you that whosoever should put away his wife and
- 3:26marry another committeth adultery. Christ was not the civil ruler,
- 3:30and he said this explicitly render to Caesar the things
- 3:33they are Caesar's. If marriage belongs solely to the civil authority,
- 3:37Christ would have left it to civil authority. And why
- 3:40does Saint Paul said marriage is a great sacrament? But
- 3:43I speak in Christ and in the Church. He did
- 3:45not say, but I speak for the viewpoint of civil authority.
- 3:48Again where elsewhere he writes, let her marry to whom
- 3:51she will, only let it be in the Lord First
- 3:53Corinthians six point thirty nine. Person says, according to your
- 3:57doctrie doctrine, polygamy would be wrong. The Bible permits it.
- 4:01And they answer, Christ clearly tells us whatever concessions were
- 4:05made in the old law, it was God's intention from
- 4:07the very beginning that man should cleave to his wife,
- 4:10not to his wives. And the two should be one flesh.
- 4:15God has made concessions because of the hardness of men's
- 4:18hearts and the less perfect law, but those concessions were
- 4:22withdrawn in the more perfect law. Christ restores the primitive
- 4:25law and said, henceforth, what God has joined together, let
- 4:30man not put asunder Mark ten two through nine. And
- 4:34I'm gonna I'm gonna stop that. When there a pause
- 4:37it there, I should say we'll probably have Yeah, We're
- 4:44gonna talk a lot more about marriage, at least two
- 4:47more shows with little introductory questions and answers. I don't
- 4:50like to spend more than five or ten minutes on him.
- 4:52You know, this is like a basic katechises in a
- 4:57question answer format, which is very, very useful, but you
- 5:00can be overwhelming if it goes on for too long.
- 5:03You want two or three, maybe five questions and answers.
- 5:07That's you know, anybody can hold that process and understand it.
- 5:11So have maybe another day or two on marriage. Basically,
- 5:16the one thing that can be said University of Protestants
- 5:19is they freaking love divorce. I mean they get Jesus
- 5:24says that marriage is a permanent sacrament and divorce is
- 5:28not permitted in all four Gospels, and then Saint Paul
- 5:32repeats it, and I think a few more times as
- 5:34James or Peter. I can't remember exactly the quotes off
- 5:37the top of my head. Protestants to say, their sole
- 5:42authority is the Bible, will turn a blind eye to
- 5:45those passages. They would rip them out of the Bible
- 5:47if they could. Protestants love divorce. I mean, even Martin
- 5:52Luther said he didn't really prove divorce, but he thought
- 5:56polygamy and bigamy and adultery would were wonderful. If there's
- 6:01one thing, I mean, the entire Anglican Church is founded
- 6:04upon divorce. King Henry had formerly been cutting his wife's
- 6:10heads off and said, Okay, maybe this time I'll ask
- 6:13the Pope for divorce. The Pope says no, and he says, okay,
- 6:16I'm gonna go for my own church. The entire Anglican
- 6:19Church is founded on divorce. I have been to Baptist
- 6:22churches where the preacher has been married three or four times,
- 6:25and oddly enough his ex wives and their new husbands
- 6:30and their new families are sitting in that same congregation,
- 6:34and usually they've divorced two or three times. I mean,
- 6:37if there is one thing Protestants love. It is cheating
- 6:40on their spouse's adultery and divorce. I mean that is
- 6:44like universal. I don't care if you go to a Presbyterian,
- 6:49a Baptist, a Methodist, Anglican, a Lutheran, Pentecostal, a Church
- 6:54of God, you name it, seven day ad venice. They
- 6:59hate the sacrament of marriage. But on that same hand,
- 7:03they'll turn around and say, well, it's not right the
- 7:05priests aren't married. And it's like, wait a minute, actually,
- 7:09you know, Saint Paul said it was better if priests
- 7:11weren't married. But it is a discipline of the Roman rite,
- 7:16and if they wanted to join a different rite of
- 7:19the church, they could be married priests. They choose to
- 7:21adopt that what would you call it, oh, there's a
- 7:27word for it. Discipline. They choose to adopt that discipline.
- 7:30But the Bible does specifically say it's better if a preacher,
- 7:33a presbyter, of deacon whatever not be married specifically. But
- 7:39Protestants will just rail against priestly celibacy. Why because they
- 7:45don't practice celibacy in their own lives. They cheat on
- 7:49each other's spouse, they cheat on their own spouses, They
- 7:51cheat with their best friends, husbands and wives. They get
- 7:53divorced six or seven times. Damn the kids. They don't
- 7:57give a crap about their children. I mean, seriously, that's
- 8:02the foundation and heart of Protestantism is divorce. Like the
- 8:08priests were just saying in that intro chapter there, I
- 8:11think the first question was the second one. Just as
- 8:16Jesus and the Church are bound one to another, one
- 8:21spouse to another in a heavenly form of matrimony, polygamy
- 8:27is not allowed because man can only be married to
- 8:30one wife. What did Martin Luther do but create multiple wives?
- 8:37If Jesus is espoused to the Catholic Church, can he
- 8:40be espoused to the Lutheran Church without violating the laws
- 8:44against bigamy or polygamy? New New Literally, the very foundation
- 8:53of Protestantism is divorce, is rejecting chastity. Well, it's pride,
- 9:02it's first. I mean, you know, pride is the first sin.
- 9:04But it's saying, yeah, there can be other churches, and
- 9:09you can have other wives, and you and wives can
- 9:11have other husbands, and you know there are no consequences
- 9:15to sin anyway. Martin Luther actually encouraged He said he
- 9:18could commit adultery and murder. I think was an adultery
- 9:22and fornication. Maybe that was it A thousand times a
- 9:26day now I think he actually said murder and it
- 9:29wouldn't keep you out of heaven. I mean, foundationally this
- 9:35you want to upset Protestants, show them in the Bible
- 9:39or Jesus condemns divorce, and they'll say, well, that was
- 9:42back then, we don't believe that now. And you say, well,
- 9:46here it says God is the same yesterday, today, and tomorrow.
- 9:50And you know, there's one truth and the truth never changes.
- 9:53And you know, they'll come up with a thousand different
- 9:57things to debate you on points of history or you know,
- 10:01quotes from the Bible taking out of context. The one
- 10:04thing they cannot stand and cannot handle. I mean, they'll say, well,
- 10:09Jesus didn't really mean it when he said, this is
- 10:11my flesh and my blood. You have to eat it
- 10:13and drink it and have eternal life. They'll say, Jesus
- 10:16didn't really mean it when he said you had to
- 10:17be baptized to be saved. You know, Jesus didn't really
- 10:21mean it when he gave his apostles the power to
- 10:23forgive sins, et cetera. And they'll come up with all
- 10:27kinds of twisted ways of explaining that. But you go
- 10:30from one gospel of the next and say, here Jesus
- 10:33condemned divorce. Here Jesus said, no, Christian can't divorce, no divorce,
- 10:37no divorce, no divorce, no divorce, no divorce, no divorce.
- 10:40One who gets divorced and marries another commits adultery. Adultery's
- 10:44immortal sin. Adultery violates the Ten Commandments. That's one thing
- 10:50they can absolutely not answer. That is the pen that
- 10:54bursts the bubble of Protestantism, divorce, And ironically, it's the
- 11:00reason why in about thirty years from now, mainline Protestantism
- 11:05will be no more. Since the nineteen seventies, the Anglican
- 11:10Church or the Episcopal Church in America has lost nearly
- 11:14eighty percent of its members. This is pre COVID seventy
- 11:19to eighty percent, depending on where you look. The Lutheran Church.
- 11:23You've got two branches of Lutheran ones, like the evangelical side.
- 11:27One is the traditional side, Traditional side down ever seventy percent,
- 11:31Evangelical side down about fifty percent. Okay, Presbyterian Church has
- 11:37lost about eighty percent of its members. It's down to
- 11:40I think a million four at last count. And there
- 11:43used to be tens of millions of Presbyterians, especially in
- 11:47the southeast. I mean that was the biggest denomination in
- 11:50North Carolina. And now there are fewer Presbyterians than there
- 11:54are in the city of the population of the city
- 11:57of Winston Salem. Okay, I mean seriously, And now I
- 12:01mean one of our medium large cities about a million people,
- 12:05like Charlotte's like three four million people. That's more than
- 12:09all the Presbyterians in the entire country. The Methodist Church
- 12:14is down about fifty percent. The Baptist Church is down
- 12:16about thirty percent. And this is all pre COVID. Remember
- 12:20when they closed their doors and didn't have church services
- 12:24during COVID. A lot of people never went back. So
- 12:27these numbers are actually a lot worse than what I'm
- 12:29telling you right now. The reason is divorce. People, especially
- 12:36in the Protestant Church, go to the church they were
- 12:38brought up in. Their parents took them to church, They
- 12:40went to Sunday School, they went to Vacation Bible School.
- 12:43They were raised Baptists, so they are Baptists. They don't
- 12:45know why they're Baptists. They just know their Baptist because
- 12:47their parents are Babtists and their grandparents were Baptist. Same
- 12:50as even more true Presbyterianism, which makes and Methodism actually,
- 12:55but Presbyterianism makes absolutely no sense in its doctrine theology.
- 13:01As I said, the Anglican Church is essentially the Church
- 13:04of England in the Episcopal as well. Your Anglican or
- 13:07Episcopal because your ancestors were English and because King Henry
- 13:11wanted a divorce. That's the only reason to be an
- 13:13Anglican or Episcopal. Because their doctrine is essentially the same
- 13:17as Lutheran. It's just their English and the Lutherans were German,
- 13:21so they wouldn't join a German church. You know, it's ridiculous,
- 13:26I mean that, But that is Protestanism. You're a Methodist
- 13:29because your grandparents are Methodists. Because your parents are Methodists,
- 13:32is because you were raised in the Methodist Church. Yes,
- 13:36unfortunately that is true of some cradle Catholics. You know.
- 13:40That's your Nancy Pelosis and your Joe Biden's their Catholic
- 13:43in name only. That's a topic for another day. But
- 13:48for converts like myself, and for a lot of younger Catholics,
- 13:51not the baby boomer generation, pretty well cnechized. We know
- 13:56why we are a Catholic. You ask them Methodist, what's
- 13:59the method? I did that when I was a Methodist
- 14:02youth minister. I was very interested. You know, I had
- 14:05been confirmed in the Methodist church at about the age of
- 14:07eleven or so. I went through all their classes and everything,
- 14:10which didn't amount to a lot. And I got hired
- 14:15to well to help out as a Methodist youth minister.
- 14:20And I asked the minister, Okay, we're Methodists, so therefore
- 14:24there must be a method. Could you explain to me
- 14:26what it is? What's the method of Christian perfection? Great?
- 14:30Can you explain that to me? No, I have no
- 14:32idea what that means. I went to the elders and
- 14:35deacons and even the bishop of the you know Methodists
- 14:39have a bishop by the way, and I said, what
- 14:41is the method? I don't know, I don't know. Can
- 14:44you explain it to me? Well, when you know Wesley
- 14:46wrote this, he talked about the method of but what
- 14:49does it mean? No idea? So I mean you can't.
- 14:53There's kind of reason a Methodist is a Methodist. A
- 14:57Methodist is a Methodist because they were raised in the
- 14:59Methodists ur or because a friend invited them when they
- 15:02were older. But usually it's going to be two, three,
- 15:04four generations in the same church in the same town.
- 15:08What's the thing that wrecks that divorce? When the family
- 15:12splits up, the kids go with one parent or another,
- 15:15maybe that parent stops attending church, maybe that parent starts
- 15:18going to another church. Divorce number two comes along. At
- 15:24that point, there's pretty much no church attendance whatsoever in
- 15:27most families by the second divorce. You know, you can,
- 15:31you know, look at the stats. I can't pull them
- 15:33up in mind. I saw this years ago. But basically
- 15:37for each divorce after that, the chances of those that
- 15:41family attending church together goes down the toilet. I mean,
- 15:45you start getting mixed families where the kids have step
- 15:48brothers and sisters they're not even related to. They don't
- 15:51like each other, maybe they don't like their new stepfather
- 15:55or step mother, and mixed people from mixed backgrounds. Maybe
- 16:02you know, one's a Presbyterian, one's a Baptist, and in
- 16:05the Presbyterian is not comfortable of the Baptist Church and
- 16:07the Baptist is from the Presbyterian Church, or maybe they are,
- 16:11you know, still sort of in a more rural setting
- 16:14where people don't really approve of well, I can't say
- 16:19that anymore. When I was a kid, like in the
- 16:21nineteen eighties, Baptists didn't really like divorce. They didn't approve
- 16:25of it. Now, I mean, my Baptist export in door
- 16:30neighbor in one of the most rural communities in the
- 16:33South in the Appalachians. I believe she was his fourth
- 16:40wife and he was her third husband, and they just
- 16:43got divorced. So that's what destroys prize and churches. That's
- 16:50the death knell. If these trends continue, which there's no
- 16:54reasonablieve they won't, the Presbyterian Church will cease to exist
- 16:58within thirty years, except as sort of a historical site
- 17:03now and then you know, they have endowments that will
- 17:05last for a while. They're already more ministers than there
- 17:09are churches. Because the churches are closing so fast. The
- 17:12Presbyterian colleges are shutting down. The Presbyterian Church will basically
- 17:17exist in name only within the next thirty years. The
- 17:20same is true of the Anglican Episcopal now They will
- 17:23keep a presence obviously in Washington, d C. And some
- 17:26of the more prominent areas because Episcopalians Anglicans among America's founders,
- 17:32and they have big pots of money, and you know,
- 17:36still will carry a little political influence. They're very big
- 17:38in the Masonic Order, the Freemasons. So are the Presbyterians.
- 17:42So I mean there's going to be a little bit
- 17:44of them left, but they're basically gone. Traditional Lutheranism will
- 17:49be gone. I mean it may again linger in a
- 17:52few like Midwestern states where it's you know, more part
- 17:56of people's Germanic heritage. They have Evangelical Lutherans pretty much gone.
- 18:03The Methodists will be about in the same condition that
- 18:07the Presbyterians are now. I mean they'll be down to
- 18:10about a million. They are only about, I think what
- 18:13thirteen million Methodists in the United States right now. There
- 18:15used to be seventy million. I mean think about that.
- 18:17You know, they'll be gone. Mainline Baptists, you're talking your
- 18:24Northern Baptist or Southern Baptist. You go downtown in a
- 18:27city and there's your first Baptist church. That's your mainline Baptist,
- 18:30that's not your fringe groups and there are you know,
- 18:34the free will Baptists and all kinds of stuff like that.
- 18:36Mainline Baptists will be down to a fraction of what
- 18:41it is now, maybe thirty percent of where it was
- 18:45ten years ago, I mean. And the Catholic population is
- 18:48growing in huge numbers. There are now more Catholics in
- 18:52the I mean, Catholic Church is the biggest Christian denomination
- 18:56in the United States. In thirty years, the Catholic Church
- 18:59will out number all Protestants put together. And that includes
- 19:03your Evangelicals and fringe groups. And you know, we will
- 19:08be the largest denomination of the country. And if America
- 19:12is going to retain its Christian values upon which it
- 19:16was founded on at least in part, we're going to
- 19:20have to get really active in bringing people into the
- 19:23Catholic Church and teaching them. And one of the main
- 19:26things we can tell them is, look, in the Catholic Church,
- 19:30we don't accept divorce in extreme circumstances. You can get
- 19:36file for an annoyment if you have real sincere cause
- 19:39for it, but no divorce. Your family is going to
- 19:44be together and stay together for intact from the time
- 19:48you marry to the time you die, and your children
- 19:53will be raised the same way. There won't be all
- 19:56this strife and angst. And I mean it's divorce destroys families. Obviously,
- 20:03it's really bad for kids. We're talking depression, anxiety, drug use, suicide,
- 20:09risky behavior, is violence. I mean, every single study ever
- 20:13shown has shown that divorce hurts the children. I think
- 20:18we can offer I think we can offer America a
- 20:21much better vision. And frankly, if we don't, Christianity's done
- 20:27for in the United States, for half the population. Catholic
- 20:32Church will continue to grow. Catholic Church will continue to
- 20:35be Catholic, but you'll have vast swaths of people whose
- 20:42grandparents were Protestant who no longer believe anything. And that's
- 20:46kind of what we see now in Western Europe. And
- 20:50it's not good. It's not good at all. I mean,
- 20:53you look at what's going on in Spain and Ireland
- 20:55and England. I mean, Muslim's taken over, raping and murdering
- 21:01with impunity and nobody with the guts the will to
- 21:04do a thing about it. Home sexuality, transgenderism, and there's
- 21:10no moral authority because how do you have moral authority.
- 21:15I mean, Spain's a really sad case, Spain still was
- 21:19essentially a Catholic nation, but its entire government is communist
- 21:24and you know, atheistic at its core. England is you know,
- 21:29a totally different thing. You know, France wants Catholic nation,
- 21:34hasn't been for three hundred years now, almost two hundred
- 21:38some years. It's bad, It's truly bad. Ireland is just horrible.
- 21:44I mean, what England did to Ireland is genocide and slavery.
- 21:48But with then, what Irish communist politicians have done to
- 21:52Catholic Ireland is just as bad, if not worse. And Scotland,
- 21:57Scotland the brave my butt. I mean, Scotland caved and
- 22:01surrendered and sold out so many centuries ago. Scotland's a disgrace,
- 22:08an absolute utter disgrace. And I'm part Scottish. I hate
- 22:11to say that. I'm very proud of my Scottish heritage.
- 22:14Scotland is an absolute disgrace anyway, America is not far behind.
- 22:19Look at Canada. Canada is worse than we are. And
- 22:23Canada is not even a Christian nation anymore. Canada is
- 22:27passing law, is saying you can't even read the Bible
- 22:29if it will offend a Muslim or homosexual in church
- 22:33with a minister. Canada is lost. Canada is just so awful.
- 22:42And you know, in Mexico, since the Communist revolution in Mexico,
- 22:47you know, Poncho Villa time, I mean, they never really
- 22:50came back. They never really came back. I mean they've
- 22:52all I mean essentially, they've had a very strong communist
- 22:56leaning and it's just horrible, even though as some majority
- 23:00Catholic nation, right, well, yeah, but the people in office aren't.
- 23:05I mean, we've had a couple of Catholic presidents in America,
- 23:08John Kennedy and Joe Biden. What did they do exactly
- 23:13to advance Catholic morals and ideals? I mean Kennedy couldn't
- 23:18keep his pants on long enough and Biden was an
- 23:22abortion supporting trends, gays, promoting senile moron. I mean, anyway,
- 23:33we have to offer people the alternative of a church
- 23:36that is true to the teachings of Christ and his apostles.
- 23:41And if we do that, people will be attracted to it.
- 23:44If we start compromising, we're no better than the Protestants.
- 23:49So let's get on too, father Sparaga, and we're going
- 23:54to talk about let's see where I left off. Yes,
- 23:59we talked about processions. Now we're talking about Christian burial.
- 24:03Christian burial is a solemn service accompanied by special ceremonies,
- 24:07in which the remains of a departed Catholic are carried
- 24:10in procession to the place of internment. As is usual
- 24:14in every procession, the cross is carried first to note
- 24:17that our prayers are offered in the name of the
- 24:19crucified Redeemer. The bells are told, psalms and funeral hymns
- 24:22are sung the special ceremonies that Christian's one of those
- 24:28words I have trouble with. Obsequies obse e q u
- 24:33i e s Obsequies are all significant of our prayer
- 24:38that God may have mercy on the soul of the deceased.
- 24:41The lighted tapers express that's candles, by the way, express
- 24:44the desire that the departed may be admitted into the
- 24:47realms of perpetual light. The holy water sprinkled on the
- 24:50coffin expresses the desire that the soul may be cleansed
- 24:52from sin. The incense that is burned expresses the desire
- 24:56that our prayers on His behalf may extend, may ascend
- 25:00to the throat of the most High. Yeah, okay, oh,
- 25:07even as the clouds roll upper Okay, I lost my
- 25:09place for a second. Ascend to the throat of the
- 25:12most High, even as the clouds of smoke roll upward.
- 25:16A requiem mass is generally celebrated at funerals, and sometimes
- 25:19an oration is delivered to invite the moorars to pray
- 25:22for the departed if the body is not present. I
- 25:26don't even know how to pronounce this. I've never even
- 25:28heard this word before. Kata falc kata falca c a
- 25:34t a f a l q u e wow A
- 25:38cata falc occupies the place of the coffin. The ceremonies
- 25:44observed at the obsequies of a child and here seven
- 25:46years old, are such as express joy and gladness. White
- 25:50vestments worn by the priests. The Reese praises on the
- 25:53coffin are supposed to represent the victor's crown gained by
- 25:56the departed. The present custom of loading the coffin and
- 25:59cover the grave with costly floral decorations of every size
- 26:03and shape is greatly to be deprecated. It is a
- 26:06waste of money that had far better be given to
- 26:09the poor or expended on masses for the repose of
- 26:12that departed, As Saint Augustine expressly says that unnecessary display
- 26:16should be avoided at funerals. The soul of departed can
- 26:19surely reap no benefit from what is reprehensible. Now that's something, dear,
- 26:24I doubt how many of you creatle Catholics actually know,
- 26:27or converts for that matter, the Catholic tradition is not
- 26:31to have all these expensive flowers and fancy funerals. It's
- 26:35really just a mass. And you know, maybe what's the
- 26:43word eulogy or eulogy said people remember the departed, and
- 26:47then the masses said for the departed and for the family,
- 26:50and all that not what it is now. You know,
- 26:56one of my family friends that I grew up with,
- 27:00you know, knew him since I was like six. You know,
- 27:02he was one of my mom's friends. He was always around,
- 27:05big goofball of a guy, but very anti Catholic, Baptist.
- 27:08Really one of those people that when we became Catholic,
- 27:12just abandoned us after you know, thirty years of friendship,
- 27:16turned his back and walked away. But my uncle was
- 27:19the only Catholic in the family. When he passed away.
- 27:22This fellow came went up to the DC area with
- 27:25us and went to his funeral because he had known him,
- 27:28and it's the only time he had ever been to
- 27:29a Catholic church. The only time he'd ever been to
- 27:31a Catholic funeral had anything to do with Catholicism, right, Well,
- 27:35my uncle's brother was also gay, and he of course
- 27:39had been raised in the church, but he did not
- 27:41attend Mass anymore. And I tell you that they both
- 27:46were wonderful. Actually, no issues were discussed, no arguments or anything.
- 27:54The uncle did not go up for I mean, the
- 27:57uncle's brother did not go up for commune. He was
- 27:59respectful of the Eucharist. That was nice. He sat right
- 28:03there beside the you know Southern Baptists who hated Catholics
- 28:06and homeseexuals and everything, and everybody was very polite and pleasant.
- 28:11And afterwards our friend said, this is the most beautiful
- 28:16funeral I have ever attended. This is what every funeral
- 28:20should be like. And I'm like, well, that kind of
- 28:23is what every funeral should be like. I mean that
- 28:26was the intention. That's the way it was done for
- 28:28two thousand years. It you know, maybe you want to
- 28:32look at why it's not done that way in the
- 28:34Baptist Church, And it kind of almost got through to
- 28:37him for a second, and then he shut down. No,
- 28:39that was it. But it says it is becoming to
- 28:43treat the human body with respect after death. For during
- 28:47our lifetimes our bodies are sacred as being the abode
- 28:50and instrument of the soul, which is made in God's image.
- 28:53They are also the temple of the holy ghosts, and
- 28:55to be held in honor for God's sake. Moreover, the
- 28:58burial of the dead is the work of which is
- 29:00not without its rewards. Remember how Tobias acted. In the
- 29:04early days of Christianity. Persons of the highest position, even popes,
- 29:07did not consider it demeaning themselves to carry the remains
- 29:11of martyrs in their arms to the graves and bury
- 29:13them with their own hands. In the days of persecution,
- 29:17the place of burial was in the catacombs, where the
- 29:19holy sacrifice was altered offered, I should say. Hence it
- 29:24came to pass that in later times the dead were
- 29:26buried in the crypts of churches or in the grounds
- 29:29surrounding the church, which is called the churchyard. This custom
- 29:33is now abolished on sanitary grounds cemeteries being situated on
- 29:37the outskirts of towns. For the most part, an exaggerate
- 29:40idea as to the unhealthiness of intramural sepulture has contributed
- 29:46to the introduction introduction of the unnatural and pagan custom
- 29:50of cremation. Yes, remember this written in the eighteen nineties.
- 29:54At this point the Church absolutely forbade cremation now is
- 30:00permitted in some cases, but the ashes must be buried.
- 30:04You can't just keep them on your mantle or scatter
- 30:06them in the wind like people do. Says no danger
- 30:10to the living may be apprehended from the proximity of
- 30:13the burial ground, provided the graves are of a proper depth,
- 30:17for earth is known to be the best possible disinfectant.
- 30:20That's actually true. But we also have vaults. Now, you
- 30:26know your coffin actually goes inside of a concrete vault.
- 30:29So in fus Bragger's time it was just wood, so
- 30:32very different. Cremation is condemned by the Church as being
- 30:35an abominable abuse. Originally, the cost of inturing the dead
- 30:39and the ground was common to all nations. For the
- 30:41most human ancient remains that have been discovered bear no
- 30:45signs of having been subjected by fire. Vaults containing skeletons
- 30:49have been met with closed by a slab of stone.
- 30:52We know that the Jews bury their dead. Holy Scripture
- 30:54constantly speaks of the burial of kings and prophets that
- 30:57his corpse should be left unburied? Was a chest heism
- 31:00threatened to the transgressor Deuteronomy? What is that? Twenty six?
- 31:06I think so. Only during a time of pestilence were
- 31:08the Jews allowed to burn individual corpses aim As six'.
- 31:12Ten The, romans in earlier times buried their. Dead cisro
- 31:16tells us that their graves were considered as, sacred and
- 31:19the profanation of a tomb was severely, punished even by
- 31:22the loss of a. Hand bodies were often deposited in,
- 31:25sarcophagi where they were reduced to. Dust Pliny PLINY i should,
- 31:30say records that The romans only buried their dead when
- 31:33they feared that they might be outraged by the, enemy
- 31:36and later, times when manners became, corrupt cremation was practiced among.
- 31:41Them the custom of embalming the dead prevailed among The.
- 31:45Egyptians it is a noteworthy fact that all barbarious nations
- 31:49who in an uncivilized state burn their dead substitute the

- 31:55its light on their. Land christianity did in fact abolished.
- 31:59Cremation but in these, days When christian faith is on the,
- 32:02decrease cremation is once more becoming the. Fashion Saint augustine
- 32:06announces the practice is horrible and. Barbarous it offends Our christian,
- 32:10instincts for we are taught to regard death as a.
- 32:13Sleep the dead sleep In Christ First corinthians fifteen. Eighteen
- 32:17for they arise, again and they are laid to rest in.
- 32:19Peace with the idea of repose they enjoy is connected
- 32:23with the, churchyard not with the. Crematorium when we commit
- 32:26our dead to the kindly, earth we tact tacitly express
- 32:30our belief that our body is like a seed which
- 32:32casts in the ground to germinate and spring. Up you support.
- 32:36Her it is so in, corruption it is raised in,
- 32:43Incorruption First, corinthians fifteen forty. Two As, christians we have
- 32:48a higher esteem for the, soul which partakes of divine,
- 32:50nature and consequently for the, body which is the servant
- 32:53and tool of the. Soul no True christian can fail
- 32:56to shrink from the horrors of. Cremation only those who
- 32:59are lost to all sense of dignity of human, nature
- 33:02to all belief in the truths of, religion can desire
- 33:05it for. Themselves let us remember That, christ our great
- 33:08EXEMPLAR i work was laid in the tomb and rose.
- 33:14Again For, pagans such considerations naturally have no weight by
- 33:23WORD i tick on my throat that one. Quit they
- 33:26dislike the sight of the sepultural monument the maund raised
- 33:29over the, dead because it reminded them of, death which
- 33:32would put an end to their earthly. Enjoyments for the same,
- 33:35reason unbelievers in our own day advocate. Cremation burial suggests
- 33:40to them too strongly the immortality of the, soul whereas
- 33:43cremation appears to the promise of annihilation that they desires
- 33:48their portion after. Death, yet let no one imagine that
- 33:51The christian dreads destruction of the body by fire as
- 33:55an impediment to its future. Resurrection For god can affect
- 33:58the reintegration of the body has been dissolved Into gassi's
- 34:02elements and the interest of. Justice destruction of the body
- 34:05by fire is highly, reprehensible since if a body is,
- 34:09buried it can be afterward exhumed if this is necessary
- 34:12for detection of a crime such as. Murder by this
- 34:17means many a murder has been brought to justice after,
- 34:20cremation this is. Impossible those, therefore who speak in favor
- 34:24of cremation befriend criminals inasmuch as they aid in the
- 34:27removal of all traces of their. Crime christian burial is
- 34:31denied to the, unbaptized to the Non, catholic And catholics
- 34:35who are known to have died in moral. Sin catholics
- 34:38to Whom christian burial is denied are suicides unless they
- 34:42are insane at the time of death and therefore. Irresponsible
- 34:45it's a very fine, point but an important. One Most
- 34:50catholics who commit suicide now will receive A christian, burial
- 34:55because we assume they weren't the right state of mind
- 34:59when they killed. Them so in Post roger's time it
- 35:05was far more, stringent we might, say AND i don't
- 35:09know if this for better or for, Worse probably for the. Better,
- 35:11actually in that, case duelist anyone who participates in a
- 35:17duel cannot receive A christian. Burial did you know? That,
- 35:19Yes and any persons who obstinately refused to receive the last,
- 35:23sacraments or who have not for years fulfilled The easter
- 35:28precept going To mass On. Easter in the two last,
- 35:32cases the matter is generally laid before the. Bishops by the,
- 35:35way All Freemasons catholics who joined The Masonic order take
- 35:40an oath saying they were refused last, Rites so anyone
- 35:43who joins The Masonic order cannot receive A catholic. Burial
- 35:47The Nile Christian bureau to Bad catholics is not intended
- 35:50as the sentence of, damnation but merely as a public
- 35:52expression of abhorrence of their sins and for the purpose
- 35:55of deterring others from falling into the same. Sin and
- 35:59association would be a little thought of if one of
- 36:01its members followed to the grave a fellow member who
- 36:04had been a disgrace to that. Society so it would
- 36:06be derogatory to The church and to her ministers if
- 36:09she were to celebrate the obsequies of an Unfaithful. Catholic
- 36:14The church also refuses ecclesiastical burial to Non catholics because
- 36:18she holds the principle expressed By Pope innocent The third
- 36:21in the, words it is impossible for us to hold
- 36:23in communion after their death with those who have not
- 36:26been in communion with us during their. Life so to
- 36:30do so would give rise to the idea that all
- 36:32religions are. Alike it would destroy the prestige of The
- 36:35Catholic church and injure the souls of. Men the maxim
- 36:39of the church is that the ground she has consecrated
- 36:42is the last resting place of her, children and none
- 36:45but members of her family have a right to be
- 36:48interred Therein yet she permits Non catholic relatives to be
- 36:51laid in a family. Vault for. Suicides a portion of
- 36:55the cemetery which has not been consecrated is set. Apart
- 36:58and AS i, said a lot of that has. Change
- 37:02most priests now have a degree in psychology as well
- 37:06as their theological, degrees and that has led to a
- 37:10lot of bad, stuff a lot of you, know bending
- 37:14the rules on homosexuality and a lot of stuff like.
- 37:17That psychology can never Trump christian, morality but we do
- 37:25have a little bit better understanding of the desperate state
- 37:29of mind that leads some people to commit. Suicide, now
- 37:32some people actually commit suicide out of. Spite they are
- 37:37doing so to essentially out of, revenge make other people
- 37:41feel bad for what they perceive has been done to.
- 37:44Them that's not a mental, illness but people who are
- 37:49in a very confused, state a very desperate, state people
- 37:54who are an intense physical, pain say from cancer or
- 37:59something like. That The church is far more compassionate than
- 38:04in times, past AND i think that's a good. THING
- 38:06i think it's a very good. Thing you, know there's
- 38:12a lot in, between BUT i think the church airs
- 38:18more on the side of caution, now more on the
- 38:20side of. Compassion and, honestly very few people know the
- 38:27minds of someone who's going to commit. Suicide you, KNOW
- 38:31i was a huge fan Of Anthony. Bourdain he AND
- 38:34i are a lot, alike were a lot. Alike he's A.
- 38:38Yankee he was A yankee of, course For New york
- 38:41and all That New. JERSEY i think he was more
- 38:42In New. Jersey similar mix of mostly you, Know french
- 38:47And irish, heritage, foodies punk, rockers, cynical, outspoken, caustic sometimes. Sarcastic,
- 38:58Yeah i'm all those. THINGS i. Admit it can be
- 39:02very difficult to be. Around but he was. Smart he
- 39:06was you, know he had a really good. Heart he
- 39:08was very, compassionate very. Charitable he really loved especially people
- 39:14in the fringes of, society you, know poor, folks, kids you,
- 39:19know really very actually pretty good man at. Heart, now
- 39:25he had been a drug addict of cocaine and heroin
- 39:28addiction and alcoholism and all. That but, yeah he became,
- 39:33successful and the more successful he, became the more miserable he.
- 39:37Became and after having three very successful television series and
- 39:44best selling books and becoming an international, celebrity he was absolutely.
- 39:48Miserable and his first marriage probably should not have broken,
- 39:53up they should have stayed. Together second, MARRIAGE i can't.
- 39:58Remember he was married two or three. Times but, anyway
- 40:00the woman he was with in the end was very
- 40:03bad for, him very bad for, him and in my,
- 40:06opinion just kind of brought out the worst of his.
- 40:10PERSONALITY i. Think and, uh, yeah he committed, suicide AND
- 40:18i understand what was going on in his. MIND i
- 40:24can feel, IT i can identify with. IT i, am
- 40:28LIKE i, said more like him than. Not but, uh
- 40:35he was Born, catholic he was Confirmed. Catholic he was,
- 40:38Baptized AND i don't know if he's buried in A
- 40:42catholic cemetery or. Not AS i, UNDERSTAND i think his
- 40:46wife was author Also. Catholic she had absolutely abandoned The Catholic,
- 40:50church renounced. IT i don't know if she had a
- 40:51priest bless's grave or. Not and If i'm wrong about,
- 40:54THAT i am. SORRY i hope you know she's back
- 40:56in the church and all, that but she a few
- 41:00times her, speaks she's just incredibly cynical and negative about.
- 41:03Everything who, knows maybe that was just. Snacked hopefully it.
- 41:08Was but you, know it would be hard for me to.
- 41:11Say was he in such a desperate? State you know
- 41:16that his actions were not his? RESPONSIBILITY i can't say
- 41:23on a daily, Basis probably. Not but then how drunk was?
- 41:27HE i mean he was a really heavy, DRINKER i
- 41:30mean really really heavy. Drinker was he in control of
- 41:36his faculties at the. Time, SEE i can't answer, that and,
- 41:39unfortunately you, know neither can he. Priest and so the
- 41:42church now kind of errs on the side of. Compassion
- 41:47so say a prayer for the propos of the soul
- 41:49Of Anthony. Bourdain he was a really good, guy we
- 41:53have been really good, friends insulting each other constantly and
- 41:58trying out to do each other with food or find
- 42:01the weirdest old music we could put. On really like that,
- 42:04guy and it really broke my heart really when he committed.
- 42:07Suicide but The, Church, YEAH i think the church is
- 42:15right in aerring on the side of, compassion AND i
- 42:18think we should pray for the repose the souls of
- 42:20those commit. Suicide and Father sparago's time that would have been.
- 42:23Discouraged NOW i think it's very much encouraged and very.
- 42:27Appropriate so, sometimes even though you, Know i'm totally opposed to,
- 42:34modernism every now and, then you, know like they, say
- 42:37even a stop clock's right twice a, day every now and,
- 42:41then it's not a bad. Thing so, anyway, Y'ALL i
- 42:45am going to try to get a sip of something
- 42:46here to get this terrible tickle out of my. Throat
- 42:50y'all have a great, week AND i will talk to
- 42:52you next. Time
