- 0:00Speaker 1: Chapter eight, Gippetto makes Pinocchio a new pair of feet
- 0:05Speaker 1: and sells his coat to buy him an A. B. C. Book.
- 0:11Speaker 1: The Marionette, as soon as his hunger was appeased, started
- 0:15Speaker 1: to grumble and cry that he wanted a new pair
- 0:18Speaker 1: of feet, but Mastro Geppetto, in order to punish him
- 0:22Speaker 1: for his mischief, let him alone the whole morning after dinner.
- 0:27Speaker 1: He said to him, why should I make your feet
- 0:30Speaker 1: over again to see you run away from home once more?
- 0:34Speaker 1: I promise you, answered the marionette, sobbing that from now on,
- 0:38Speaker 1: I'll be good. Boys always promise that when they want something,
- 0:43Speaker 1: said Geppetto, I promise to go to school every day,
- 0:46Speaker 1: to study and to succeed. Boys always sing that song
- 0:51Speaker 1: when they want their own will. But I'm not like
- 0:54Speaker 1: other boys. I am better than all of them, and
- 0:57Speaker 1: I'll always tell the truth. I promise you, father that
- 1:00Speaker 1: I'll learn a trade, and I'll be the comfort and
- 1:03Speaker 1: staff of your old age. Geppetto, though trying to look
- 1:08Speaker 1: very stern, felt his eyes fill with tears and his
- 1:12Speaker 1: heart soften when he saw Pinocchio so unhappy. He said
- 1:16Speaker 1: no more, but taking his tools and two pieces of wood.
- 1:21Speaker 1: He set to work diligently. In less than an hour,
- 1:25Speaker 1: the feet were finished, two slender, nimble, little feet, strong
- 1:29Speaker 1: and quick, modeled as if by an artist's hands. Close
- 1:34Speaker 1: your eyes and sleep, Geppetto then said to the marionette.
- 1:38Speaker 1: Pinocchio closed his eyes and pretended to be asleep, while
- 1:42Speaker 1: Geppetto stuck on the two feet with a bit of
- 1:45Speaker 1: glue melted in an egg shell, doing his work so
- 1:48Speaker 1: well that the joint could hardly be seen. As soon
- 1:52Speaker 1: as the marionette felt his new feet, he gave one
- 1:55Speaker 1: leap from the table and started to skip and jump
- 1:59Speaker 1: around as if he had lost his head from very joy.
- 2:02Speaker 1: To show you how grateful I am to you, father,
- 2:05Speaker 1: I'll go to school now. But to go to school,
- 2:08Speaker 1: I need a suit of clothes. Geppetto did not have
- 2:12Speaker 1: a penny in his pocket, so he made his son
- 2:15Speaker 1: a little suit of flowered paper, a pair of shoes
- 2:18Speaker 1: from the bark of a tree, and a tiny cap
- 2:21Speaker 1: from a bit of dough. Pinocchio ran to look at
- 2:24Speaker 1: himself in a bowl of water, and he felt so
- 2:27Speaker 1: happy that he said, proudly, now I look like a gentleman.
- 2:32Speaker 1: Truly answered Geppetto, But remember that fine clothes do not
- 2:38Speaker 1: make the man unless they are neat and clean. Very true,
- 2:43Speaker 1: answered Pinocchio. But in order to go to school, I
- 2:47Speaker 1: still need something very important. What is it? An ABC book,
- 2:54Speaker 1: to be sure? But how shall we get it? That's easy,
- 2:59Speaker 1: We'll go to the books. Don't buy it? And the
- 3:02Speaker 1: money I have none? Neither have I, said the old
- 3:08Speaker 1: man sadly. Pinocchio, though a happy boy, always became sad
- 3:14Speaker 1: and downcast at these words. When poverty shows itself, even
- 3:19Speaker 1: mischievous boys understand what it means. What does it matter
- 3:24Speaker 1: after all? Cried Geppetto, all at once, as he jumped
- 3:27Speaker 1: up from his chair, putting on his old coat full
- 3:30Speaker 1: of darns and patches, he ran out of the house
- 3:33Speaker 1: without another word. After a while he returned. In his
- 3:39Speaker 1: hands he had the A. B. C. Book for his son,
- 3:42Speaker 1: but the old coat was gone. The poor fellow was
- 3:47Speaker 1: in his shirt sleeves, and the day was cold. Where's
- 3:51Speaker 1: your coat? Father? I have sold it? Why did you
- 3:55Speaker 1: sell your coat? It was too warm? Pinocchio understood the
- 4:02Speaker 1: answer in a twinkling, and, unable to restrain his tears,
- 4:06Speaker 1: he jumped on his father's neck and kissed him over
- 4:09Speaker 1: and over. So ends Chapter eight.
