- 2:25Speaker 4: Thanks Julius, I think any better. It's still fumes as
- 2:28Speaker 4: if they're building the new Third Avenue subway right through
- 2:31Speaker 4: my head while it's to ben. I don't mind the
- 2:34Speaker 4: digging so much, but I wish they'd be a little
- 2:35Speaker 4: more gentle when they throw the track down around the
- 2:39Speaker 4: quieting here tonight anyway.
- 2:40Speaker 3: Yeah, well it's raining.
- 2:41Speaker 5: You know.
- 2:41Speaker 3: The people they stay home on it rains.
- 2:43Speaker 4: Hmm. It was quiet last night too, Well, then.
- 2:45Speaker 6: It was nice shot the people they don't like to
- 2:47Speaker 6: go indoors when it's nice out. Oh, I see what
- 2:50Speaker 6: this business needs is nice intermediate waver.
- 2:54Speaker 3: But who's going to go on proposition nature.
- 2:56Speaker 4: I'm glad to see you take the ups and downs
- 2:58Speaker 4: of the saluting business philosophically.
- 3:00Speaker 6: Mister templar guy, he's got no philosophy in him. He's
- 3:03Speaker 6: got no business in a saloon business, he says. I
- 3:06Speaker 6: don't mind a couple of quiet night. It's gives me
- 3:08Speaker 6: a chance to catch up on the newspapers. I wants
- 3:10Speaker 6: the headline there.
- 3:11Speaker 4: Oh, it's the same thing Russia here, Russian, Russian.
- 3:14Speaker 3: That other calamity, you know, the local one?
- 3:16Speaker 4: Oh, which frenchy lassal that's the former calamities and the Julius.
- 3:21Speaker 4: They're burying us out tomorrow. Well that's what the cops say.
- 3:24Speaker 4: But you don't believe in.
- 3:26Speaker 3: Ignorance, believes nothing, mister Templar, And me I am ignorant.
- 3:30Speaker 4: Then I don't have to change your rating on my
- 3:32Speaker 4: little list, Judias. I've mistaken him out to downa his wife.
- 3:35Speaker 3: In many ways, ignorant, mister Templar, Like, for instance, how
- 3:39Speaker 3: do they know?
- 3:41Speaker 4: How do you mean?
- 3:42Speaker 6: How well, for six months the cops have been hot
- 3:45Speaker 6: and high and off of this lassal. They got a
- 3:46Speaker 6: reservation for him at Sing Sing you know, private room
- 3:49Speaker 6: and a chair.
- 3:50Speaker 4: That's equipped with a built in toaster.
- 3:52Speaker 6: Yeah, they're gonna fry him, and believe me, nobody deserves
- 3:55Speaker 6: it better. And they finally find this French lossand you
- 3:58Speaker 6: see he's dead in the river. Three weeks in the river,
- 4:02Speaker 6: mister Templar.
- 4:03Speaker 3: So how do they know?
- 4:05Speaker 4: You mean a man doesn't look like he used to
- 4:08Speaker 4: look after three unhealthy weeks in the Hudson.
- 4:10Speaker 6: That's my point. It ain't that I think the cops
- 4:12Speaker 6: maybe doing it on Pipis. But you know what they
- 4:14Speaker 6: make sometimes mistake, not very often, but sometimes in a
- 4:19Speaker 6: certain of paper. He didn't even have no fingerprints left,
- 4:22Speaker 6: you know, three weeks in a river.
- 4:23Speaker 4: No, but you forget. He was wearing a ring that
- 4:26Speaker 4: LaSala always wore. The scraps of clothing were definitely established
- 4:29Speaker 4: as less amazon. The shoes, and oh there were a
- 4:32Speaker 4: few other things. Yeah, but Julius, a scientist can reconstruct
- 4:37Speaker 4: the face and body of a man did almost a
- 4:39Speaker 4: million years just from a couple of bleached bones.
- 4:42Speaker 3: Who knows.
- 4:44Speaker 4: Huh.
- 4:44Speaker 6: Well, they say that this is what the fellow looked
- 4:46Speaker 6: like a million years ago. But you and me, we
- 4:49Speaker 6: gotta tell the noel what a fellow?
- 4:51Speaker 4: Maybe you're a syny No, mister TEMpl I just ignorant.
- 4:55Speaker 3: What's the difference?
- 4:56Speaker 6: They say that it's French la salad putting on the tomorrow.
- 4:59Speaker 4: So all right, it's fre she us out by me too,
- 5:02Speaker 4: good night, Julius. Well that is a templar.
- 5:03Speaker 6: Hey, that headache, you knows you should put it to
- 5:06Speaker 6: bed on a rainy night like this.
- 5:08Speaker 4: That's exactly what I'm going to do with my headache
- 5:10Speaker 4: and with the rest of me too. Oh no, no,
- 5:28Speaker 4: all right, all righted, please slipt the door. We'll go
- 5:31Speaker 4: back to sleep. Can't you. Now, what's all this.
- 5:36Speaker 7: You Simon Templar, Yes, but Simon Templar, who is known
- 5:40Speaker 7: as the same.
- 5:41Speaker 4: Look here, what is this?
- 5:42Speaker 7: We'd like to come in?
- 5:43Speaker 4: Come on, Mabel, I'm nice.
- 5:44Speaker 8: If you need this is a nice joke. Business must
- 5:49Speaker 8: be good.
- 5:50Speaker 4: And see here would you do please?
- 5:51Speaker 8: Oh you're the same the same.
- 5:54Speaker 4: Look. I never give autographs, and if I did, it
- 5:57Speaker 4: wouldn't be at two in the morning.
- 5:58Speaker 7: Oh, we couldn't make it any earlier.
- 6:00Speaker 9: The saint you know, Midge, she's cute. Look who are
- 6:05Speaker 9: you doing for angels?
- 6:07Speaker 8: Huh angels?
- 6:09Speaker 4: Julius was right. I should never have had Scotch on
- 6:11Speaker 4: top of Champagne. So you're angel uh huh.
- 6:16Speaker 8: That's why we couldn't get here any sooner.
- 6:18Speaker 4: You mean you had a rough crossing?
- 6:20Speaker 9: No, not especially. There's never much traffic at this hour.
- 6:24Speaker 9: There is, and we didn't have to wait very long
- 6:26Speaker 9: for the bus either.
- 6:27Speaker 7: Did we need five minutes the bus?
- 6:30Speaker 4: You mean there's a bus between here and there Perhahs
- 6:35Speaker 4: number fourteen.
- 6:36Speaker 8: You change at Union Square?
- 6:37Speaker 7: Of course the subway is quicker that Harry doesn't like
- 6:40Speaker 7: for us Angels to ride the subways so late at night.
- 6:43Speaker 7: Harry Satan our boss. We call him Harry. It's the templar.
- 6:48Speaker 4: You're all right, you tell me?
- 6:50Speaker 7: I mean, no, what do you pinching yourself like that for?
- 6:54Speaker 4: Can't you see that I'm trying to wake myself up?
- 6:56Speaker 7: Oh you seem awaken up to me, doesn't be Mabel?
- 6:59Speaker 8: Yeah, but well, missus Templer, why are you looking so unhappy?
- 7:03Speaker 4: Don't angels ever have nightmares?
- 7:06Speaker 5: Sure?
- 7:06Speaker 8: Why? Sometimes? I n Do you know what I think?
- 7:12Speaker 7: What Mabel?
- 7:13Speaker 8: I think? He thinks we think we're a real angel, Mabel.
- 7:18Speaker 9: When we tell the girl, mister Chandla, honestly, for your
- 7:23Speaker 9: own private information, we're positively not real angels. I mean,
- 7:28Speaker 9: not the kind of for instance. No, no, we're Satan's angels.
- 7:33Speaker 8: Oh no, oh, you've heard about the chord.
- 7:36Speaker 4: Not since the last time I read Dantis Inferno.
- 7:39Speaker 8: Don't you like music?
- 7:40Speaker 4: Of course I like music?
- 7:41Speaker 8: But what on earth Templar Satan's angel?
- 7:45Speaker 9: Or putting it another way, Harry Satan and his all
- 7:48Speaker 9: girl orchestra.
- 7:49Speaker 4: Oh, for the love of you're an orchestra.
- 7:52Speaker 8: Hau huh, Tennis Sacks bath Tuba.
- 7:57Speaker 4: It's a good thing. Neither of you said the harp.
- 7:59Speaker 4: We've been for an round of confusion. Look, girls, I'm
- 8:02Speaker 4: not feeling very well at the moment, so I one
- 8:04Speaker 4: day they wouldn't mind continuing this.
- 8:06Speaker 8: Key templar, We have a problem.
- 8:08Speaker 4: Take her to Philsport town there.
- 8:09Speaker 7: And after we came all the way across town following
- 8:11Speaker 7: our last performance at the Paradise Paradise.
- 8:14Speaker 4: Look, let not start that stuff again.
- 8:17Speaker 8: We need your hair, we really do.
- 8:19Speaker 4: But I don't know anything about your music. I missed.
- 8:21Speaker 8: Oh we didn't come to see you about our music. No,
- 8:24Speaker 8: it's something worse, much worse.
- 8:25Speaker 4: What could it be worse?
- 8:26Speaker 7: Our second trombone has disappeared, completely vanished.
- 8:30Speaker 4: Oh it'll turn up in some porn shop. I'm sure.
- 8:33Speaker 4: And if it doesn't, why not bail chip in and
- 8:36Speaker 4: buy another one and let me go back to bed.
- 8:38Speaker 9: Huh but it isn't an it it's as she our
- 8:42Speaker 9: second trambone, Mary Miller, and she's disappeared.
- 8:45Speaker 4: I see. Tell me. Have you ever heard of a
- 8:48Speaker 4: thriving little institution known as the Missing Person's Bureau?
- 8:51Speaker 8: Yeah, we call them.
- 8:52Speaker 7: They won't handle it. They said they don't consider Mary
- 8:54Speaker 7: missing just because she's been gone one and a half day.
- 8:57Speaker 4: Good for them. I'm glad to see they're a leerft
- 8:59Speaker 4: down there.
- 9:00Speaker 8: But he didn't like Mary, not at all.
- 9:03Speaker 9: It may be only one and a half days to
- 9:05Speaker 9: ordinary people, but to us it's fourteen performances she's been missing.
- 9:10Speaker 7: And Mary never missed a performance in all the six
- 9:12Speaker 7: months she's been with the band.
- 9:14Speaker 4: I see him.
- 9:15Speaker 8: You must help it. You must wear Frankie.
- 9:17Speaker 4: Yes, I was afraid you were.
- 9:19Speaker 8: Please please help us.
- 9:20Speaker 4: Look, ladies, just because a girl trombone player has been
- 9:24Speaker 4: missing for thirty six hours thirty seven Now, okay, okay,
- 9:28Speaker 4: I'll tell you what I will.
- 9:29Speaker 8: Did you hear he's gonna do something?
- 9:32Speaker 5: What?
- 9:33Speaker 4: Well, if you will get out of here and let
- 9:35Speaker 4: me get back to bed and remove myself with this headache,
- 9:38Speaker 4: I promise you the first thing tomorrow I'll visit you
- 9:40Speaker 4: at theater and look into this trombone business.
- 9:43Speaker 8: Oh isn't he wonderful?
- 9:46Speaker 7: It's the Paradise, the one on the east side.
- 9:48Speaker 4: The Paradise.
- 9:49Speaker 8: Our fast show is at two pm.
- 9:51Speaker 4: I'll be there now. Good night, please, good night, And
- 9:55Speaker 4: give my love to the rest of the angels. Oh no, no,
- 10:15Speaker 4: not those two again. All right, all right, all right,
- 10:19Speaker 4: angel for Heaven's sake, girls.
- 10:26Speaker 5: I don't look like girls, do I.
- 10:28Speaker 4: As a matter of fact, you don't look like anything
- 10:30Speaker 4: I've ever seen before, coming in saying come on, might
- 10:34Speaker 4: be different. What's the gun for, ugly you?
- 10:41Speaker 5: Yes, sir, nice joint.

- 10:57Speaker 3: Huh?
- 10:57Speaker 4: And you're holding the gun? Yeah?
- 10:59Speaker 10: Yeah, I'm glad. Notice things I'm here about them tomatoes.
- 11:02Speaker 4: Saying trombones tomatoes tonight. I'm doing a bigger business than Macon's.
- 11:08Speaker 10: And Dames, I mean them angels, keep clear, saying tell
- 11:12Speaker 10: them don't or looking for now missing Dames.
- 11:14Speaker 4: Saying he won't be finding out trouble. You get it,
- 11:17Speaker 4: the general drift. You know, I'm beginning to think I
- 11:22Speaker 4: know you from somewhere. Yeah, then it's time to stop thinking.
- 11:25Speaker 4: The face is familiar. But I can't seem to place
- 11:27Speaker 4: the nose. No, I have not.
- 11:29Speaker 5: We'll lose it.
- 11:30Speaker 4: That nose was flat the last time I swigned about
- 11:33Speaker 4: a year ago. So you brought yourself a new schnozzle.

- 12:24Speaker 4: As a matter of fact, mister Satan, we.
- 12:25Speaker 3: Mighted the people today.
- 12:26Speaker 5: I might at them almost as big as that day
- 12:28Speaker 5: in thebuke.
- 12:29Speaker 4: You hear that applause, but uh huh, I heard it.
- 12:33Speaker 5: Well we'll improve.
- 12:35Speaker 10: It's a great little outfit I got here, a great
- 12:37Speaker 10: bunch of girls.
- 12:38Speaker 5: You should have caught us that day in thebuke.
- 12:40Speaker 3: You just should have called it.
- 12:41Speaker 4: Maybe next time. There's something I wanted to talk to
- 12:44Speaker 4: you about. I look pale.
- 12:46Speaker 5: If it's about them payments for.
- 12:47Speaker 4: Those arrange I'm not collecting bills. I'm I'm looking for
- 12:50Speaker 4: a girl.
- 12:51Speaker 3: So it's like that.
- 12:52Speaker 4: I know it's like this. I understand your second trump
- 12:56Speaker 4: bone players missing second crump. Hey you this is news
- 13:01Speaker 4: to you.
- 13:01Speaker 5: Mary'd never miss a performance.

- 13:04Speaker 5: In a band loves music, the only one in the
- 13:07Speaker 5: whole outfit.
- 13:07Speaker 3: Who does?
- 13:08Speaker 4: Why was she behind her trombone? Just now? You mean
- 13:11Speaker 4: on the show, we just not give me Jane. You're
- 13:14Speaker 4: the leader, don't you know?
- 13:15Speaker 5: Well? Sometimes you know?
- 13:17Speaker 4: I did?
- 13:19Speaker 5: Yeah, come in?
- 13:21Speaker 4: I want t hello?
- 13:24Speaker 8: You did come promise?
- 13:26Speaker 10: Hey? Wait a minute, look, how come I don't know
- 13:28Speaker 10: about this guy?
- 13:29Speaker 9: It hasn't as yet been reported in the racing pool.
- 13:32Speaker 9: That's how comes mister Templer.
- 13:34Speaker 8: What can we do? Where can we begin?
- 13:36Speaker 4: Well, then you and mister Satan can start the ball
- 13:39Speaker 4: game by telling me a few things.
- 13:40Speaker 8: About the lady everything I know.
- 13:43Speaker 4: First, did you seem worried about anything these last few days? Nervous?
- 13:48Speaker 4: Perhaps frightened?
- 13:50Speaker 8: It's hard to tell.
- 13:51Speaker 4: Huh.
- 13:52Speaker 9: Well, Mary's such a quiet girl. I became her roommate
- 13:55Speaker 9: when she joined the Angels about six months ago, and
- 13:58Speaker 9: even living with her, I never really felt I knew her.
- 14:02Speaker 4: I see, not that.
- 14:04Speaker 9: I didn't try to know her. I myself am a
- 14:06Speaker 9: rather friendly person.
- 14:08Speaker 5: Yeah, I'll say what anybody, Harry shut up?
- 14:11Speaker 9: Of course, Mary was always nice and sweet to everyone,
- 14:15Speaker 9: and such a perfect little lady and all.
- 14:17Speaker 4: But yet why well, every.
- 14:21Speaker 9: Now and then, something sort of well, sort of tough
- 14:25Speaker 9: like seemed to show.
- 14:26Speaker 5: Up in her go on, you're nuts.
- 14:28Speaker 8: Harry, I want you your butt out.
- 14:29Speaker 5: Were you're wrong?
- 14:30Speaker 9: And she seemed like she was carrying secrets, mister temple
- 14:34Speaker 9: deep sorrowful one. Of course I never asked her to
- 14:38Speaker 9: elucidate much.
- 14:40Speaker 4: Where was she from?
- 14:41Speaker 8: Well, that was one of the secrets.
- 14:43Speaker 9: Every time I asked her, she'd make what she didn't
- 14:46Speaker 9: hear me? But Harry, you should know me.
- 14:51Speaker 5: Yeah, I don't know anything, not anything period.
- 14:54Speaker 4: What died to do before she became one of seasons?
- 14:56Speaker 5: I don't know that either.
- 14:58Speaker 4: Didn't she tell you anything I want you to be
- 15:00Speaker 4: doing before? What orchestra she'd been playing with? For example?
- 15:03Speaker 5: No, I never asked, And if I did ask, I
- 15:05Speaker 5: don't remember.
- 15:06Speaker 10: And if I asked, if she told me, I don't
- 15:07Speaker 10: remember that either.
- 15:08Speaker 9: If she was a hoot, you'd remember, If she was
- 15:11Speaker 9: a hot you'd even know how many hands Hi her
- 15:13Speaker 9: grandmother was.
- 15:14Speaker 8: You'd remember everything.
- 15:16Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, yeah, remember everything. You see how it is, pally,
- 15:19Speaker 5: Most guys go through.
- 15:20Speaker 10: Life getting egged by just one of them, But not
- 15:22Speaker 10: Harry Satan.
- 15:24Speaker 5: I got a hook up with twenty two.
- 15:25Speaker 7: I'll go.
- 15:27Speaker 4: You know, something. I think I will be saying it pally.
- 15:30Speaker 5: Remember her name, Harry Satan.
- 15:32Speaker 8: So he's such a lovable jack, I'd.
- 15:36Speaker 4: Be a little more inclined to go along with you
- 15:38Speaker 4: on that if he were a little less inclined to
- 15:40Speaker 4: hiding things.
- 15:41Speaker 8: You think he's holding out something about Mary.
- 15:44Speaker 4: I'm sure he would tell me. Did you go through
- 15:47Speaker 4: her belongings?
- 15:48Speaker 5: Oh?
- 15:48Speaker 9: Why, I wouldn't dream of such a thing. Besides, she
- 15:50Speaker 9: doesn't have very much to go through.
- 15:53Speaker 4: I don't take a look myself later. Did you take
- 15:55Speaker 4: anything with her?
- 15:56Speaker 8: Not so much as a toothbrush, not even a crush? Yes,
- 16:02Speaker 8: come on, what happened, Harry?
- 16:11Speaker 4: Who shan't you? Harry?
- 16:13Speaker 5: I don't know. I didn't see came through the window.
- 16:17Speaker 10: See get a doctor, No, no doctor, peal about Mary?
- 16:27Speaker 5: Yes, if you don't, If you don't find it, go
- 16:30Speaker 5: kill who?
- 16:32Speaker 4: Why? Look?
- 16:33Speaker 5: I know I'm killing I don't know why.
- 16:35Speaker 3: But she's a good kid.
- 16:37Speaker 5: Only one mistake, only one mistake?
- 16:40Speaker 10: Ship?
- 16:41Speaker 9: Oh, oh, Harry, Oh, Harry, this temper, he's dead. Our
- 17:06Speaker 9: room is down the middle of the hall, mister Templer,
- 17:08Speaker 9: this way, I see, thank you. It's a real cheesy hotel.
- 17:13Speaker 9: But even sharing a room, Mary and I could just
- 17:15Speaker 9: barely a wood.
- 17:16Speaker 8: Oh here we are. Well, at least the door works.
- 17:21Speaker 8: It's what mister Chandler.
- 17:24Speaker 4: Just look, you haven't been entertaining any tornadoes.
- 17:27Speaker 9: Like the head well, I never who could have done
- 17:30Speaker 9: such a thing? Who could have torn our room apart
- 17:32Speaker 9: like this?
- 17:33Speaker 4: That? It was looking for something? Obviously? What that is?
- 17:38Speaker 4: Point number one? Point number two is did he find it?
- 17:43Speaker 4: Don't know what's Oh that's.
- 17:44Speaker 8: Mary's first day kid, you know Bannage's eyes on, and
- 17:47Speaker 8: heaven knows what else.
- 17:48Speaker 4: It's rather professional looking, wouldn't you say?
- 17:51Speaker 3: Uh huh?
- 17:51Speaker 9: Mary never went traveling anywhere without it? Why anytime any
- 17:55Speaker 9: of us girls cut a singingnail too close so got
- 17:57Speaker 9: a little burned from mc curly eye, was Mary nacking
- 18:01Speaker 9: like Florence Nightingale?
- 18:02Speaker 4: I see?
- 18:03Speaker 8: Harry used to Poor Harry, He.
- 18:06Speaker 9: Used to say, having Mary with the orchestra was like
- 18:09Speaker 9: having a doctor in that.
- 18:10Speaker 8: You aren't listening?
- 18:12Speaker 4: Is there this Mary?
- 18:13Speaker 8: Uh huh?
- 18:14Speaker 9: That's me on the left. Midge took it last month.
- 18:18Speaker 9: Oh look at this room? What on earth could anyone
- 18:21Speaker 9: have been looking for in here?
- 18:22Speaker 4: I wish I knew, Mabel, but I do know this,
- 18:25Speaker 4: whatever it was, he didn't find it, you can tell.
- 18:29Speaker 4: But how the wallpaper? See how I ripped it off
- 18:32Speaker 4: in places, places that make no sense because there's no
- 18:34Speaker 4: possible hiding place behind where the paper was.
- 18:36Speaker 11: But so what?
- 18:37Speaker 4: It was an act of frustration, not finding what he
- 18:41Speaker 4: was after in any of the probable places he looked to,
- 18:43Speaker 4: lost his head and started on the improbable one.
- 18:45Speaker 9: And began to tear down the walls. Oh, I'd like
- 18:48Speaker 9: to get my hands on him, just for one little minute.
- 18:51Speaker 4: So di, But not because of the wallpaper. Who what
- 18:54Speaker 4: he did to Harry? Come on, let's get out of here.
- 18:57Speaker 8: Yes, this room is just altogether too depressed.
- 19:01Speaker 4: Wait a minute, maybe is this Mary's trombone? Ha? Huh?
- 19:07Speaker 4: They come in two pieces, don't they. The sliding pad
- 19:10Speaker 4: can be slid right off the blowing barton, What is it?
- 19:12Speaker 8: Did you find something, mister Temple?
- 19:14Speaker 4: I'll let you know soon as I work whatever it
- 19:16Speaker 4: is out of there? We are they there rolled up? Well,
- 19:23Speaker 4: i'll be X ray pictures.
- 19:25Speaker 10: Now.
- 19:26Speaker 8: Why would Mary have X ray pictures rolled up in
- 19:28Speaker 8: her trombone?
- 19:29Speaker 4: Because she figured and rightly it seems that her trombone
- 19:32Speaker 4: would be the one place whoever was looking for them
- 19:34Speaker 4: wouldn't look.
- 19:35Speaker 8: But I don't why.
- 19:39Speaker 4: Should anyone just as puzzled as you are.
- 19:42Speaker 8: Mister Temple, you could never be well.
- 19:55Speaker 11: Of course, I don't know all the registered nurses in town,
- 19:57Speaker 11: mister Temple, but I do have a large agency and
- 20:00Speaker 11: a rather good memory.
- 20:01Speaker 4: And the name Mary Miller rings no bells, missus oyerhunt.
- 20:05Speaker 11: I'm sorry, I'd like to help you.
- 20:07Speaker 8: Perhaps one of the.
- 20:08Speaker 4: Other nurses agency, perhaps, or perhaps Mary Miller was known
- 20:12Speaker 4: as something else, or perhaps she wasn't a nurse at all.
- 20:16Speaker 8: Oh you're not sure then that she WoT?
- 20:18Speaker 10: No.
- 20:19Speaker 4: I looked into a box and found a hunch ha
- 20:21Speaker 4: bahys a first aid kid, one that seemed just a
- 20:25Speaker 4: trifle to elaborate for a simple citizen to own. Oh,
- 20:27Speaker 4: I see, you're sure that the snapshot doesn't.
- 20:32Speaker 11: No, doesn't look like any of the nurses at this age.
- 20:36Speaker 4: Hmm, I wonder would you mind wondering out loud? Please?
- 20:42Speaker 11: Of course her hair was dark. If I could just
- 20:45Speaker 11: see this girl as a brunette.
- 20:47Speaker 4: Oh that's easy. Why go to Antoine's when you have
- 20:50Speaker 4: templar the picture please and that soft pencil. While I
- 20:58Speaker 4: am mademoiselle is brunette, Now why it is?
- 21:01Speaker 8: It's Mary Webster.
- 21:03Speaker 4: You say that name with an exclamation point after.
- 21:05Speaker 11: It, several exclamation points go on. She was doctor Burton's nurse,
- 21:10Speaker 11: and so you don't recall doctor Burton, who was quite notorious.
- 21:15Speaker 4: What did you do flunk his cigarette tast He had some.
- 21:18Speaker 11: Rather interesting patients, mister templar, the underworlds, hoodlums and gangsters.
- 21:24Speaker 11: Uh oh, and a remarkable if rather specialized specialty bullets
- 21:29Speaker 11: that's right, gunshot wounds, wounds caused by hand grenades, knifings.
- 21:33Speaker 4: And he just never bothered to report any of his
- 21:36Speaker 4: patient's battle wounds to the police as required by law.
- 21:39Speaker 11: Huh, that's right. He died in prison shortly after his conviction.
- 21:42Speaker 4: And Mary uh Miller or Webster's the case, may be.
- 21:46Speaker 11: Also sent to prison, but with a light sentence. And
- 21:49Speaker 11: of course her license was revoked. She had to give
- 21:51Speaker 11: up nursing when she got out, and.
- 21:53Speaker 4: So she became a trombone player and a collector.
- 21:57Speaker 11: Oh what does she collect, mister temple.
- 22:00Speaker 4: X ray pictures, old and rare ones. It sounds like
- 22:04Speaker 4: a dull hobby, I admit, but I think there's money
- 22:06Speaker 4: in it. Well, Raymond.
- 22:17Speaker 2: Very interesting X ray plate, Simon. But what am I
- 22:20Speaker 2: supposed to do about him?
- 22:21Speaker 4: Just tell me about them, doctor Simon.
- 22:24Speaker 2: I'm a physician employed by the office of the City
- 22:27Speaker 2: Medical Examiner. You know I'm not allowed to give private consultations.
- 22:31Speaker 3: Here.
- 22:31Speaker 4: I think this consultation might develop into a rather public one.
- 22:36Speaker 4: It's a riddle you're making. I'm trying to make answers,
- 22:39Speaker 4: my friend, not riddles very well.
- 22:43Speaker 2: There are pictures of a shin bowne.
- 22:46Speaker 4: That's all. That's all.
- 22:48Speaker 2: Well, slightly different sort of a shinbone. You see right here,
- 22:53Speaker 2: this darker portion through here.
- 22:55Speaker 4: M h.
- 22:56Speaker 2: It's a silver plate and evidently was in an accident of.
- 23:00Speaker 4: St or he was shot.
- 23:03Speaker 2: Yes, yes, a bullet would just about break off that
- 23:05Speaker 2: amount of bone. He might have been shot any hourish
- 23:09Speaker 2: physician had placed the missing bone of the silver blade.
- 23:12Speaker 4: That's all it's done all the time. Have you done
- 23:16Speaker 4: any autopsis around here lately on a body with a
- 23:19Speaker 4: silver shinbone? Doctor?
- 23:20Speaker 3: Now, what are you trying to find out? Simon?
- 23:24Speaker 4: What about Frenchy lassal LaSalle? I did that out of
- 23:28Speaker 4: see myself. No silk Lates. Then it wasn't LaSalle. They
- 23:32Speaker 4: buried this morning?
- 23:33Speaker 3: What simon you crazy?
- 23:36Speaker 2: That body they dragged out of the river, checked up
- 23:38Speaker 2: his lacelle on at least a dozen points planted points.
- 23:42Speaker 4: The body was dressed up to give that impression before
- 23:45Speaker 4: it was dumped into the river. Ah, it's simple enough.
- 23:48Speaker 4: French's body comes out of the river and into a
- 23:51Speaker 4: grave and the police closed the files on frenchship. The
- 23:55Speaker 4: heat is off and Lassal beats the chair ared.
- 23:58Speaker 2: How are you now that these X ray pictures show
- 24:02Speaker 2: LaSalle shinborn?
- 24:04Speaker 4: A killer named Jake Florio, who used to be French's
- 24:07Speaker 4: right arm, told me not to go looking for a
- 24:09Speaker 4: missing girl named Mary Miller.
- 24:11Speaker 2: M either you have too much imagination or I don't
- 24:15Speaker 2: have enough.
- 24:15Speaker 4: Mary worked for the doctor who did the operation on
- 24:18Speaker 4: this leg. She's probably one of the few living persons
- 24:21Speaker 4: who knows that LaSalle has a silver plate to his shin,
- 24:24Speaker 4: and she had the X rays to prove it. So
- 24:28Speaker 4: so if the man buried today in French in Nassau's
- 24:31Speaker 4: bad name didn't have a silver plate in his leg.
- 24:33Speaker 2: Then this smeller girl had some pretty important information.
- 24:37Speaker 5: Why didn't she come tours with it?
- 24:39Speaker 4: Because she wanted more than to be paid off with
- 24:41Speaker 4: a with a thank you. She isn't that good a citizen.
- 24:45Speaker 2: You think she tried to shake down Lasel.
- 24:48Speaker 4: And I think Lasan refused to shake is probably at
- 24:52Speaker 4: this very moment twisting her arm, trying to make her
- 24:54Speaker 4: tell where these pictures are.
- 24:55Speaker 2: I can see where he'd consider them important.
- 24:58Speaker 4: They're the only thing in this world that can prove
- 25:00Speaker 4: he's still alive and still a candidate for the electric chair. Yes,
- 25:15Speaker 4: Mabel and me, Hello girls. It's always nice to welcome
- 25:21Speaker 4: a couple of angels.
- 25:22Speaker 8: Mister Templer. We would like to know what, if anything,
- 25:25Speaker 8: you are doing.
- 25:26Speaker 7: We insist on knowing.
- 25:27Speaker 4: As a matter of fact, I was reading a book.
- 25:30Speaker 8: Reading a book, mister Templer.
- 25:33Speaker 4: It's called in one head and out the other, very amusing,
- 25:37Speaker 4: full of laughs.
- 25:37Speaker 9: You can laugh at a time like this, with poor
- 25:40Speaker 9: Mary's still among the missy and.
- 25:42Speaker 8: Poor Harry among the murders. We shouldn't you be out looking.
- 25:45Speaker 4: That's exactly what I would be doing if I went
- 25:48Speaker 4: at home, waiting, waiting for what. I expect that at
- 25:52Speaker 4: any moment the doorbell will ring and a man named
- 25:55Speaker 4: Jake Flourio will be among us.
- 25:56Speaker 8: For what may I ask?
- 25:59Speaker 9: Just to kill me, mister Templer at a time like
- 26:02Speaker 9: I said, you kill you, mister.
- 26:05Speaker 8: Templor, No, don't lame you.
- 26:07Speaker 4: I'll do my best.
- 26:08Speaker 8: But why should anybody want to kill you for.
- 26:10Speaker 4: The same reason he killed Harry Satan. I know too
- 26:14Speaker 4: much about Mary Miller, and knowing too much about Mary,
- 26:17Speaker 4: he's afraid might lead me to knowing just enough about
- 26:20Speaker 4: FRENCHI lassa.
- 26:21Speaker 8: I don't understand you.
- 26:23Speaker 4: It's healthier that.
- 26:24Speaker 7: Way, mister Templar. Are you sure that this florial person
- 26:27Speaker 7: is coming?
- 26:28Speaker 4: Not positive? But it figures that he should.
- 26:30Speaker 8: But shouldn't you do something to protect yourself?
- 26:33Speaker 4: I have Oh you get in the other room, do
- 26:39Speaker 4: as I say?
- 26:39Speaker 5: All right?
- 26:40Speaker 8: Come on me?
- 26:44Speaker 5: Yes, Al Graham Hello, saying why.
- 26:51Speaker 4: It isn't a telegram at all. It's Jake Frio and
- 26:54Speaker 4: I'll bet you've come to shoot me inside saying come on,
- 26:58Speaker 4: come on. Anything to oblige a man with a thirty eight.
- 27:01Speaker 10: I warned you knock a poke around, saying you know
- 27:03Speaker 10: what happens the smart guys who can't take a suggestion.
- 27:10Speaker 5: Well, simon, did they do it?
- 27:11Speaker 2: Is?
- 27:11Speaker 3: He told me to?
- 27:12Speaker 4: The operation is a complete success, doctor, And now let's
- 27:16Speaker 4: bring him back to life for a while, so he
- 27:18Speaker 4: can tell us where French and ourselves hiding. I'm all right,
- 27:23Speaker 4: I'm all right, doctor. I'd like you to meet a
- 27:26Speaker 4: couple of angels. How do you do?
- 27:28Speaker 10: Hello?
- 27:29Speaker 8: Teenage?
- 27:30Speaker 12: He's cute, he is I've never noticed before, Simon, who's there?
- 27:49Speaker 4: Delivery?
- 27:50Speaker 3: You've got that all the part mont, I'm not expecting anything.
- 27:52Speaker 4: I guess mister Floria must have given us the wrong address.
- 27:55Speaker 5: Where are you from?
- 27:56Speaker 4: Made laboratories have got some X ray pictures here to
- 28:02Speaker 4: bring their YEA, but I guess I got the wrong address,
- 28:04Speaker 4: So I'll just.
- 28:05Speaker 5: Be wait a minute. Maybe I have to take a
- 28:08Speaker 5: look at that. All right, now, end in that envelope.
- 28:14Speaker 4: You Hello, I'm coming in. Have a nice snaplace, huh.
- 28:30Speaker 4: And stop worrying about those old X ray pictures. You'll
- 28:33Speaker 4: you'll probably be needing some brand new ones when you
- 28:35Speaker 4: wake up. A. So this is your room, miss Miller.
- 28:41Speaker 4: Don't worry. I'll n't tell you. But before I remove
- 28:44Speaker 4: the gag from your mouth and give you a chance
- 28:45Speaker 4: to talk back, I want you to listen to a
- 28:48Speaker 4: little lecture I've prepared concerning the folly of trying to
- 28:51Speaker 4: blackmail gangster now to begin with when a ruthless filler
- 28:55Speaker 4: like French Lass.
- 28:56Speaker 2: Are You have been listening to another transcribed adventure of
- 29:13Speaker 2: the Saint, the robin Hood of Modern Crime.
- 29:16Speaker 4: Now Here is our star, Tom Conway, Ladies and gentlemen.
- 29:20Speaker 4: In our cast you had Sandra Gould as Mabel and
- 29:23Speaker 4: Margaret Brayton as Missus Sawyer. Sheldon Leonard played Julius, and
- 29:28Speaker 4: Paul Richards j Doctor Raymond was Stanley Ferr and Harry
- 29:32Speaker 4: Benny Rubin. This is Dom Conway inviting you to join
- 29:35Speaker 4: us again next week at the same time for another
- 29:38Speaker 4: exciting adventure of the Saint. Good Night.
- 30:04Speaker 2: The script of The Saint was written by Michael Tramon.
- 30:07Speaker 2: The Saint, based on characters created by Leslie Choppers, is
- 30:10Speaker 2: of James L. Safia production and is directed by Helen Might.
- 30:14Speaker 2: Tom Conway is soon to be seen in Warner Brothers
- 30:16Speaker 2: production of Painting the Clouds with Sunshine. All you Saint
- 30:20Speaker 2: fans will be glad to know that the Saint comic
- 30:22Speaker 2: books are on sale.
- 30:23Speaker 3: At all news stands. Here an answer is don stand.
- 31:05Speaker 4: This is NBC, the National Broadcasting Company.
- 31:19Speaker 13: Fuck, this is Andrew Ryans with OTR Westerns Dot com,
- 31:24Speaker 13: where we stream live old time Radio Westerns twenty four
- 31:27Speaker 13: hours a day, seven days a week, with a special twist,
- 31:31Speaker 13: you select the tracks that get to be played. We've
- 31:34Speaker 13: got a thousand different episodes from shows like Gunsmoke, Tales
- 31:38Speaker 13: of the Texas Rangers, Escape, Genautry, and many more. Come
- 31:42Speaker 13: check us out at OTR Westerns dot com slash live.
- 31:46Speaker 4: Again.
- 31:46Speaker 13: That's OTR Westerns dot com slash live. You're listening to
- 31:50Speaker 13: the great detectives of Old Time Radio with Adam Graham.
- 31:53Speaker 13: And now let's get back into the show.
- 32:01Speaker 1: Welcome back.
- 32:02Speaker 4: Well.
- 32:03Speaker 1: This actually, of all the Tom Conway stories so far,
- 32:08Speaker 1: this has been my favorite because this really felt like
- 32:11Speaker 1: this was written to fit his unique style and his
- 32:15Speaker 1: unique take on the character, which is different from Bencent Price's.
- 32:20Speaker 1: But it's still played very well here, with a lot
- 32:23Speaker 1: of great moments and great lines and a very good
- 32:26Speaker 1: and involved mystery. I did think the lecture about why
- 32:30Speaker 1: not to blackmail gangsters was something we could have used
- 32:34Speaker 1: to hear, or at least characters and other detective shows
- 32:38Speaker 1: could could stand here. The doctor inserting the case of
- 32:44Speaker 1: knocking out the gunman was probably more of a case
- 32:49Speaker 1: of not introducing an extra character when you didn't have to.
- 32:53Speaker 1: But other than that, a very solid and enjoyable episode
- 32:58Speaker 1: that really shows the strengths of Tom Conway as an actor.
- 33:03Speaker 1: Over on Facebook, John wrote regarding the first episode with
- 33:08Speaker 1: Simon Templar or with Tom Conway as Simon Templar, someone
- 33:13Speaker 1: got some Sherlock in my saint. Of course, Tom Conway
- 33:18Speaker 1: over radio is probably better known as the Sherlock Holmes
- 33:22Speaker 1: that immediately followed Basil Rathbone, still teamed up with Nigel Bruce.
- 33:28Speaker 1: So far, I think he's probably a better Saint than
- 33:32Speaker 1: he was Sherlock Holmes, but that may just have been
- 33:36Speaker 1: all the challenges of following Basil Rathbone and still having
- 33:42Speaker 1: that rapport with Nigel Bruce, which can be a bit
- 33:45Speaker 1: of a challenge. Though that's not to say he wasn't
- 33:48Speaker 1: a solid homes He's a very strong actor. Finally, we
- 33:53Speaker 1: do have a comment from Mirth, who writes in thanks,
- 34:00Speaker 1: thanks very much, Adam. I continue to enjoy your show
- 34:02Speaker 1: and it's a staple of my life. Well, thanks so
- 34:05Speaker 1: much for your continued support of the program. It's definitely appreciated,
- 34:10Speaker 1: and that will do it for today. We will be
- 34:12Speaker 1: back tomorrow with The Adventures of Allery Queen, a special
- 34:16Speaker 1: one hour episode, and then next week our final episode
- 34:20Speaker 1: of The Saint with Tom Conway in the maintime. Send
- 34:23Speaker 1: your comments to Box thirteen at Great Detectives dot net,
- 34:27Speaker 1: follow us on Twitter at Radio Detectives, and become one
- 34:30Speaker 1: of our friends on Facebook, Facebook dot com. Slash Radio
- 34:34Speaker 1: Detectives from Boise, Idaho. This is your host, Adam Grahamson
- 34:37Speaker 1: and off
