- 0:00Speaker 1: Here's another one. And I just have to admit, I
- 0:04Speaker 1: like it when people use this one. Because there's part
- 0:07Speaker 1: of me that, you know, I don't like to talk
- 0:09Speaker 1: about in Sunday school. His name is Bad Vody. Try
- 0:16Speaker 1: to let him out at least once a week late
- 0:18Speaker 1: at night when nobody's around. He loves this one. When
- 0:24Speaker 1: people say, you believe that Bible, but I'm a man
- 0:29Speaker 1: of science. And unless you can prove it to me scientifically,
- 0:34Speaker 1: I just can't believe that. See, at that moment, I
- 0:38Speaker 1: try to grab on the bad votey and hold him
- 0:40Speaker 1: real tight and not let him go. Because I know
- 0:45Speaker 1: what he'll do if I let him go. He won't
- 0:46Speaker 1: be Christian. He just won't. Sometimes I think he's not
- 0:50Speaker 1: even saved because of the stuff that he wants to say.
- 0:54Speaker 1: Look at him and he say something like this. Listen,
- 0:56Speaker 1: you don't even deserve to remain in this argument, but
- 0:59Speaker 1: I'm going to let you stay in the argument because
- 1:02Speaker 1: I'm going to like what's about to happen to you
- 1:04Speaker 1: because intellectually, I'm about to beat you like a tied
- 1:07Speaker 1: up goat. So hold on right where you are. All right.
- 1:12Speaker 1: How are you going to sit here and tell me
- 1:14Speaker 1: you're a man of science and you'd believe it if
- 1:17Speaker 1: I proved it to you scientifically? Why do you want
- 1:20Speaker 1: me to use the scientific method? Do you not realize
- 1:23Speaker 1: that you don't use the scientific method on historical events?
- 1:28Speaker 1: That proves you don't even deserve to be in the argument.
- 1:30Speaker 1: Here's the scientific method. In order to use the scientific method,
- 1:34Speaker 1: something has to be observable, measurable, and repeatable. Folks, you
- 1:38Speaker 1: can't use the scientific method to prove that George Washington
- 1:41Speaker 1: was our first president. Why? Because his presidency is not observable, measurable,
- 1:46Speaker 1: and repeatable. See, they messed around. Let me go to school.
- 1:56Speaker 1: You don't use the scientific method there. You have to
- 2:00Speaker 1: use a more evidentiary method there. So what you do
- 2:03Speaker 1: is like what we do in a courtroom. You say,
- 2:06Speaker 1: do we have any eyewitnesses? Well, I just told you
- 2:09Speaker 1: we got some of those. Do the eyewitnesses tell the
- 2:12Speaker 1: same story? Yep. Friday dead, Sunday risen. They say something's
- 2:20Speaker 1: going to happen and it happens exactly the way they said.
- 2:27Speaker 1: You see, we have no external evidence that would argue
- 2:33Speaker 1: against the Bible's claim to be the word of God. None.
- 2:39Speaker 1: So the real intelligent thing to do is to believe
- 2:43Speaker 1: what it says. So I don't choose to believe the
- 2:46Speaker 1: Bible just because I was raised that way. I wasn't.
- 2:50Speaker 1: I don't choose to believe the Bible just because I
- 2:53Speaker 1: tried it and it works for me. I choose to
- 2:56Speaker 1: believe the Bible. Now say this with me, if you will,
- 2:59Speaker 1: because it is a reliable collection of historical documents written
- 3:04Speaker 1: down by eyewitnesses during the lifetime of other eyewitnesses. They
- 3:08Speaker 1: report supernatural events that took place in fulfillment of specific
- 3:12Speaker 1: prophecies and claim that their writings are divine rather than
- 3:15Speaker 1: human in origin. I told you I wanted to do
- 3:17Speaker 1: three things. Number one, I wanted to answer this question.
- 3:21Speaker 1: that I believe is a pertinent question in our culture
- 3:23Speaker 1: that we have to be able to answer. It's a
- 3:25Speaker 1: legitimate question that deserves a legitimate answer. Secondly, I told
- 3:28Speaker 1: you I wanted to make an observation. Pastors in the room,
- 3:31Speaker 1: listen to me. I just shared an expository sermon. I
- 3:37Speaker 1: preached the text in its context. I did not try
- 3:41Speaker 1: to be more creative than God. It's what I like
- 3:46Speaker 1: to call expository apologetics. The Bible says, answers every relevant question.
- 3:55Speaker 1: All scripture is God-breathed and profitable for teaching, rebuking, correcting,
- 3:58Speaker 1: training in righteousness. All of it. His divine power has
- 4:03Speaker 1: given us everything we need for life and godliness through
- 4:06Speaker 1: our knowledge of him who called us by his own
- 4:07Speaker 1: glory and excellence. Here's what I'm worried about. There's a
- 4:11Speaker 1: lot of us who believe in the inerrancy of scripture,
- 4:14Speaker 1: but some of us don't preach like we believe in
- 4:15Speaker 1: the sufficiency of scripture. Don't let anybody tell you that
- 4:21Speaker 1: exposition is a thing of the past. I hope I
- 4:23Speaker 1: didn't bore you because a lot of people say exposition
- 4:25Speaker 1: is boring. I hope you weren't bored. A lot of
- 4:29Speaker 1: people say exposition is irrelevant. I believe I just answered
- 4:33Speaker 1: what I would argue is the most relevant question that
- 4:35Speaker 1: our culture is asking and did it verse by verse,
- 4:39Speaker 1: precept upon precept, line upon line, which brings me to
- 4:41Speaker 1: the third thing, and that's the challenge. We have got
- 4:46Speaker 1: to teach the people of God Number one, that the
- 4:52Speaker 1: Bible has the answer. And number two, how to learn
- 4:57Speaker 1: it and give it. Anybody who can memorize this passage
- 5:01Speaker 1: of scripture in its context can learn how to give
- 5:04Speaker 1: the answer that I just gave you. Anybody, anybody. Folks,
- 5:11Speaker 1: that's why we wrote the ever-loving truth. That's why I
- 5:14Speaker 1: wrote the ever-loving truth Bible study. That's what it's all about,
- 5:17Speaker 1: for people to get this message. into their minds so
- 5:21Speaker 1: that when somebody asks them a question, like, why do
- 5:23Speaker 1: you choose to believe the Bible? They don't have to
- 5:25Speaker 1: fumble around and hymn in the hall. They don't have
- 5:28Speaker 1: to give some lame answer like, you know, I was
- 5:30Speaker 1: raised that way or I tried it and it works
- 5:32Speaker 1: for me. They can look people in the eye, like
- 5:34Speaker 1: a young lady from Dartmouth College where I was teaching this,
- 5:39Speaker 1: who looked a science professor of hers in the eye
- 5:43Speaker 1: and for the first time in her life felt confident
- 5:45Speaker 1: enough to speak up in the classroom. and looked at
- 5:48Speaker 1: him and said, well, sir, I choose to believe the
- 5:51Speaker 1: Bible because it's a reliable collection of historical documents written
- 5:54Speaker 1: down by eyewitnesses during the lifetime of other eyewitnesses. They
- 5:58Speaker 1: report supernatural events that took place in fulfillment of specific
- 6:01Speaker 1: prophecies and claim that their writings are divine rather than
- 6:04Speaker 1: human in origin. And by the way, if you want to,
- 6:06Speaker 1: you can put some gravy on top of it. I
- 6:09Speaker 1: tried it. Worked for me.
